Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Hey, this is Annie.
- 0:06Speaker 2: And Smetana.
- 0:07Speaker 1: And welcome to Stuff We Never Told You, a production
- 0:09Speaker 1: of iHeartRadio.
- 0:18Speaker 2: And welcome to another edition of Happy Hour. Annie, before
- 0:22Speaker 2: we start, are you doing anything Happy Hour-ish?
- 0:26Speaker 1: Yes. So my mom, I got to hang out with
- 0:29Speaker 1: my mom yesterday, and she bought me, once more, a
- 0:33Speaker 1: lot of wines. So I'm drinking a dark red wine.
- 0:38Speaker 1: It's very nice.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Is it from one of the local vineyards? Mm-hmm. Nice.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Three sisters. Nice.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 0:47Speaker 2: They've been around for a minute.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:48Speaker 2: They've been around for a minute, minute. I am drinking
- 0:51Speaker 2: on my bubbly water because we have to get a
- 0:54Speaker 2: lot of things done. Yeah. A lot of things done.
- 0:56Speaker 2: So I'm trying to keep on track. And we have
- 0:58Speaker 2: already talked about my sleepiness. But by the way, I
- 1:01Speaker 2: will say I am trying to... Not necessarily drink more,
- 1:06Speaker 2: but I'm trying to drink a little more to build
- 1:08Speaker 2: my tolerance. Maybe try to get past the sleepiness because, Annie. Yes.
- 1:15Speaker 2: You know what's happening in October?
- 1:16Speaker 1: I do, but please tell me.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Let me tell you. I'm trying to build up so
- 1:21Speaker 2: I can hang out and enjoy good, real-life happy hours
- 1:25Speaker 2: on our voyage with Virgin Voyages. Correct. You heard me correctly.
- 1:30Speaker 2: We will be sailing with our friends from Virgin Voyages
- 1:34Speaker 2: from October 2nd through the 7th with their Stuff at
- 1:37Speaker 2: Sea voyage. And I'm very excited about this. This is
- 1:41Speaker 2: a five-night adults-only sailing that will have us, Stuff Mom
- 1:45Speaker 2: Never Told You, and our producer, Rima, as well as
- 1:48Speaker 2: Stuff You Should Know and Stuff They Don't Want You
- 1:50Speaker 2: to Know doing a live podcast. Yes, so if you
- 1:54Speaker 2: wondered what these look like, You can find out. You
- 1:57Speaker 2: can come and listen to us as we are recording
- 2:00Speaker 2: live for one of our episodes later down the road.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Cross our fingers. We get to hang out with you,
- 2:06Speaker 2: the listener, hopefully, if you get to come out with us.
- 2:08Speaker 2: And yes, this is 2026. Just in case. Just in
- 2:13Speaker 2: case you listen to this years down the road. Maybe
- 2:16Speaker 2: we'll be doing it again. Who knows? But we are
- 2:18Speaker 2: so excited to to take this time and take this
- 2:21Speaker 2: break with y'all to do happy hourish things. And like
- 2:24Speaker 2: I said, I'm going to get to my drinking a
- 2:27Speaker 2: little more to help build up my tolerance so I
- 2:30Speaker 2: can hang with y'all. But also probably mocktails. Mocktails will
- 2:33Speaker 2: probably be a thing. Yeah, totally. Anyway, so if you
- 2:37Speaker 2: want to, go check out virginvoyages.com slash stuff for more information.
- 2:43Speaker 2: But with that, I also have to ask you, Annie. Uh-huh.
- 2:47Speaker 2: How are you? Hmm. Yeah, no, the dreaded question. How
- 2:52Speaker 2: are you?
- 2:55Speaker 1: I'm overwhelmed. I think that's the word I would use
- 2:57Speaker 1: right now. Because we do have a lot of stuff
- 3:01Speaker 1: at work that's going on. I'm getting ready to go
- 3:04Speaker 1: to DragonCon. In theory, I'm getting ready to do Dungeons & Dragons.
- 3:14Speaker 1: I only make that sound because it's going to be
- 3:16Speaker 1: a lot of work for me. I'm very excited about it.
- 3:19Speaker 1: But it's a lot of work. And randomly, my landlord yesterday,
- 3:28Speaker 1: which was my birthday, texted me and said, I need
- 3:33Speaker 1: to get in your apartment and clean your AC unit.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Not only was I mad because he made it sound
- 3:42Speaker 1: like he needed to do it immediately and it was
- 3:43Speaker 1: my birthday, but also... This is a whole thing I'm
- 3:47Speaker 1: going to have to do now because, Samantha, you've seen
- 3:51Speaker 1: my apartment.
- 3:52Speaker 2: It's packed.
- 3:53Speaker 1: I'm going to have to move the table that's in
- 3:56Speaker 1: front with all of this precarious nerd stuff on it.
- 4:02Speaker 1: I'm going to have to move that table. I'm going
- 4:03Speaker 1: to have to move everything underneath it. And so that's
- 4:07Speaker 1: just become a whole thing where.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Like, of all the times....
- 4:12Speaker 1: I have all this stuff to do and now I
- 4:15Speaker 1: think that's going to take me a good bit. So
- 4:17Speaker 1: tomorrow I'm going to be working on that.
- 4:21Speaker 2: So he didn't come yesterday.
- 4:23Speaker 1: I told him it's my birthday and my mom is
- 4:26Speaker 1: I actually didn't tell them it was my birthday because
- 4:28Speaker 1: that felt sad. I told them my mom was there. Oh, no.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Which was true.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Yeah, so I didn't do a timestamp, but I'm going
- 4:38Speaker 2: to do a timestamp real quick. It is 8-25-2026. Annie's
- 4:41Speaker 2: birthday was 8-24. Yes. So, because the episode will be
- 4:46Speaker 2: a little later. Yes, happy belated birthday, my love. I
- 4:50Speaker 2: did send you a gift.
- 4:52Speaker 1: You did.
- 4:52Speaker 2: And we're doing our birthday celebration tomorrow. Tomorrow.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Yes, and I'm excited.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Yes, we're doing our traditional thing. But, oh, that is annoying.
- 5:02Speaker 2: And overwhelmed is like a good word, I think, for life. Yeah.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Between all of the announcements that we're getting, I just
- 5:10Speaker 2: read that Dolly Parton has died. I am heartbroken. I
- 5:14Speaker 2: did cry. She was an amazing woman and deserves to
- 5:17Speaker 2: be celebrated. Yeah. So there's a lot happening. And I
- 5:24Speaker 2: thought we would take a moment to see how everybody's doing.
- 5:26Speaker 2: I am excited that we're going to do a new
- 5:29Speaker 2: adventure coming up, meaning the voyage, because this is something
- 5:32Speaker 2: brand new to me. I have gone into hyperdrive in
- 5:37Speaker 2: trying to overprepare. That includes sending lots of texts to people,
- 5:42Speaker 2: specifically Annie, and to my partner who's like, I don't
- 5:46Speaker 2: know what's happening, as well as watching a lot of YouTubes. Mm-hmm.
- 5:50Speaker 2: About Virgin. Yes, Virgin Voyages. I have been studying you.
- 5:53Speaker 2: I think I'm ready for you now. I'm really excited
- 5:57Speaker 2: that this is happening. But it does feel like there's
- 5:59Speaker 2: so much going on. And I just wondered how everybody
- 6:05Speaker 2: was doing at this time because it feels like constant
- 6:09Speaker 2: berating of news, whether it's food crisis, power outages, water outages,
- 6:19Speaker 2: data center outages. information flock, surveillance stuff that is happening,
- 6:23Speaker 2: upcoming elections, Supreme Court decisions. There's a lot. It feels really, really,
- 6:29Speaker 2: really heavy. And I think it's important that we do
- 6:32Speaker 2: take some time to listen to each other to see
- 6:35Speaker 2: how we are all doing. And also, I think this
- 6:38Speaker 2: is one of the ways to make sure that we
- 6:41Speaker 2: don't get apathetic, which is really, really the most dangerous thing,
- 6:45Speaker 2: I think, when it comes to times like this, when
- 6:49Speaker 2: we get so overwhelmed that we just quit or we
- 6:52Speaker 2: get so desensitized to what is happening that we start
- 6:57Speaker 2: like just accepting it and be like, yeah, that's about right.
- 7:00Speaker 2: So making sure that we are connecting with each other
- 7:05Speaker 2: as a community and making sure everybody is still here.
- 7:12Speaker 2: I know it's not always going to feel like it's okay.
- 7:15Speaker 2: I know it's not going to always feel like we
- 7:17Speaker 2: have a solution. It's definitely not rainbows. It's definitely not
- 7:21Speaker 2: rainbows and glittery stars all the time. But we do
- 7:25Speaker 2: have a moment to understand that we are a community
- 7:28Speaker 2: together and that we see each other. So I want
- 7:33Speaker 2: y'all to know we see you, even if we don't
- 7:36Speaker 2: know you personally. We know that people who have struggled
- 7:40Speaker 2: or who are overwhelmed or who are burdened or who
- 7:43Speaker 2: are hurt or who are scared, who are angry, That
- 7:48Speaker 2: we are all here together because we have all felt
- 7:50Speaker 2: those emotions together, and that's okay. But the not okay
- 7:55Speaker 2: part is to become apathetic and let things slide. We
- 8:00Speaker 2: need to find the victories where we can. The win
- 8:03Speaker 2: is a win. I always say that. Let me have this.
- 8:05Speaker 2: I need this. I do say that a lot. Let
- 8:09Speaker 2: me have this. I need this. Train videos. I love
- 8:13Speaker 2: a good train video.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Some listeners wrote in about those train videos.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Did they? Oh, I'm excited to read that because y'all.
- 8:21Speaker 2: I need train adventures. That's what I've decided. First, I'm
- 8:26Speaker 2: going to do this voyage, which is a brand new adventure. Next,
- 8:29Speaker 2: I need to do like a sleeper overnight train adventure.
- 8:33Speaker 2: So we're going to connect. I'm also really fascinated at
- 8:37Speaker 2: the people who have begun this. they've done this for
- 8:42Speaker 2: a minute, but like the train series, like going on
- 8:44Speaker 2: different trains. I think they've run out of trains. A
- 8:46Speaker 2: lot of people seem to be running out of trains
- 8:49Speaker 2: and have like graduated to like first class flights. And
- 8:52Speaker 2: I'm like, I definitely cannot afford that.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Your best bet is some random, there has been a
- 9:01Speaker 1: malfunction and you got upgraded randomly.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Or if our buddies over at Virgin Voyages wants to
- 9:08Speaker 2: tell Virgin Atlantic that, hey, We have two amazing podcasters
- 9:13Speaker 2: who need to travel first class to somewhere really fun. Yeah.
- 9:19Speaker 1: We're here.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Or, you know, just saying. But with all of that,
- 9:24Speaker 2: I think that we need to make sure that we
- 9:26Speaker 2: do have those moments of finding joy. What is your joy?
- 9:29Speaker 2: What is your outlet? And even though private equity and
- 9:35Speaker 2: corporations kind of, stole and bogarted the term self-care. Self-care
- 9:43Speaker 2: is still necessary. And I'm not talking about you need
- 9:46Speaker 2: to buy products and you need to buy $ 300 spa packages,
- 9:50Speaker 2: but just taking that time to touch grass in a
- 9:53Speaker 2: nice way, whatever that might look like. And we hope
- 9:58Speaker 2: that you were able to do that, whether it's it
- 10:00Speaker 2: is to turn on YouTube, ASMR, train videos, or whether
- 10:06Speaker 2: it is to sit with your friends and have a
- 10:09Speaker 2: good conversation. Or whether it is to go to a
- 10:13Speaker 2: very crowded establishment that has a time where everybody dresses
- 10:18Speaker 2: in their favorite cosplay and gets to be swept up
- 10:22Speaker 2: for three days in a magical world of... Well, it's
- 10:27Speaker 2: not always fiction. But a lot more fiction than not, right? Yes.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Is there non-fiction cosplay that happens?
- 10:35Speaker 1: Yes.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Tell me about those. Yes.
- 10:38Speaker 1: So, actually... Friend of the show, Holly, has a good friend, Bernie,
- 10:46Speaker 1: who I know and have hung out with and roomed
- 10:49Speaker 1: with at Disney World.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Oh, yes, yes.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Bernie writes historical, I don't think it's fiction, but it
- 10:56Speaker 1: might be. But she writes like women spies.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 11:00Speaker 1: So she usually has a panel every year at Dragon Con,
- 11:02Speaker 1: which is the events Samantha is referencing. And so every
- 11:07Speaker 1: year there's a historical panel. uh track they call them
- 11:12Speaker 1: tracks at dragon con and so there will be people
- 11:15Speaker 1: who go as somebody from history our our friend group
- 11:19Speaker 1: was gonna do um three we were gonna do pearls
- 11:27Speaker 1: we were gonna do like i don't know three different
- 11:29Speaker 1: variations of pearls one from spongebob Yeah. I was going
- 11:34Speaker 1: to be the one from X, like that horror movie series.
- 11:39Speaker 1: But our other friend, she was going to go as,
- 11:41Speaker 1: it was the historical figure who was named Pearl. I can't,
- 11:45Speaker 1: for the life of me, remember.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Oh. Yeah.
- 11:48Speaker 1: I like that. We would only work together. Like her
- 11:53Speaker 1: costume specifically, I think, would only work.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Okay, I got you. Yeah. Well, I love that. I love,
- 12:00Speaker 2: I was just thinking about that. But in general- Finding
- 12:03Speaker 2: happiness in those moments, in what is whatever is for you.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Because not everything is for you. Dragon Con is not
- 12:10Speaker 2: for me. My train to ASMR probably is not for any.
- 12:13Speaker 2: You're like, what are you doing here? And that's fine.
- 12:18Speaker 2: We just want you to know that we want you
- 12:20Speaker 2: to take care of yourself. Like, take a moment. Oftentimes,
- 12:24Speaker 2: our happy hours become unhappy hours or a bitch and whine.
- 12:28Speaker 2: And this is that moment of like, yes, bitching can
- 12:31Speaker 2: be cathartic as well. but finding joy in whatever way
- 12:34Speaker 2: you need to. And we hope you are able to
- 12:36Speaker 2: get that. If you need, again, someone to talk to,
- 12:41Speaker 2: we don't respond quickly some of the times, especially if
- 12:43Speaker 2: it's social media and email. We're like, okay, we'll get
- 12:46Speaker 2: there because we are a little bit overwhelmed over here.
- 12:49Speaker 2: But know that we are listening. Know that we are
- 12:52Speaker 2: reading and we are seeing it. And know that you're
- 12:55Speaker 2: not alone. No, it's a hard time. It's a hard
- 13:00Speaker 2: time out here. We get it. But finding joy is
- 13:02Speaker 2: okay to find joy. And I think that's the other
- 13:05Speaker 2: part is like people are, how can you be happy?
- 13:07Speaker 2: Or how can you be this, this, and this? Or
- 13:09Speaker 2: how can you have a good place in life? Because
- 13:11Speaker 2: I've felt guilt in feeling okay in where I am.
- 13:16Speaker 2: But that's okay. Like in that, like, it's good to
- 13:19Speaker 2: feel okay. It's good to feel that way. But at
- 13:22Speaker 2: the same time, understand that privilege does come with like,
- 13:25Speaker 2: but keep on the lookout. Like we'll keep watching. And
- 13:29Speaker 2: I think that's where we have to get that point across,
- 13:33Speaker 2: is that we're all at different places and we should
- 13:36Speaker 2: be allowed to celebrate where we can, but continue to
- 13:39Speaker 2: fight together. So cheers to y'all. And we hope, again,
- 13:46Speaker 2: let us know what's going on with you. Let us
- 13:47Speaker 2: know how you're caring for yourself. Let us know what
- 13:50Speaker 2: you are looking forward to. Yes.
- 13:53Speaker 1: We love hearing from you. Somebody recently wrote in about
- 13:59Speaker 1: their love of Miss Frizzle. And it gave me a
- 14:03Speaker 1: lot of joy.
- 14:04Speaker 2: So, yes.
- 14:06Speaker 1: Thank you. Well, if you would like to write in
- 14:10Speaker 1: to us listeners, you can. Our email is hello at stuffandnevertoldyou.com.
