- 0:36SPEAKER_01: Hi guys, welcome back to Skincare Anarchy.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: This is your host, Ecta, and I am back with yet another amazing, amazing set of guests.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: So without further ado, I want to introduce you guys to the co-founders of this amazing new supplement brand, Array.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: Um, and I'm I'm so excited to have Sif and Nish here with us.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: So welcome you guys.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much for making the time for our show.
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: Thank you for having us.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: We're so excited to be here.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: It's truly my pleasure.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: I really love the concept of your brand, and I would love to get started by kind of doing a deep dive into both of your backgrounds and just talk about how you got into the space and you know, just what led up to the amazing raising brand.
- 1:19SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: So I mean, Nish and I have known each other for a really long time.
- 1:25SPEAKER_02: Um, we've been together now for almost 10 years now.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Crazy.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: Crazy.
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: But essentially, throughout, you know, my entire life and since Nish has known me, I had struggled with my immune system.
- 1:40SPEAKER_02: And, you know, it was just the usual like antibiotics, getting better, sick again, antibiotics, like never really getting to the root cause of what was wrong.
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:52SPEAKER_02: And I hit my breaking point when I ended up fracturing a rib from um a chronic cough that just wasn't going away.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: And when I went to the doctor, she couldn't really give me any answers.
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: And instead, she just prescribed me some codeine.
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: And, you know, at that point, I was just like, I've I've had enough and I'm willing to try anything.
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: So I started doing this deep dive into the world of natural remedies.
- 2:19SPEAKER_02: And this this time, Ecta, by the way, I should add, this is before wellness was cool.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: Like back then it was like really and weird, but I was so desperate I would just be willing to try anything.
- 2:32SPEAKER_02: So I started playing around with supplements.
- 2:34SPEAKER_02: My immune system got so much stronger just by adding a lot of herbs and minerals and vitamins to support my system.
- 2:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: And I realized that I was able to troubleshoot a lot of other issues that I had using supplements, like everything from digestion to fatigue.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: And at this point, I had essentially created a mini apothecary at home with so many bottles of product.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: And then whenever we would travel somewhere, so we would take, we'd be carrying all these different supplements, and I'm the one carrying the suitcases.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: I'm like, What do you have to do here?
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Why are there so many supplements in here?
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: So um women have problems with clothing, and here we have it.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: And it's not just clothing, it's like clothing supplements and skincare.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: Like whenever you're traveling, you know, I have this little carry-on as Siph is carrying two suitcases, and um, and so I'm the one carrying them up the stairs, and I was just like really, really upset.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: You're you're damaging your immune system in the process.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: Well, he didn't believe that it worked until one day.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: One day I was sick as well, and I'm like, Sip, okay, what do you have in this thing?
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Like, you better have something that works for me.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: And you know, there you go, it works.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: At this point, I'm like, oh my god, this is really good.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: So I start um, you know, asking Sif for all kinds of concoctions to um to kind of solve all kinds of issues, um, whether it's stress, anxiety, energy, fatigue, whatever that might be.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: And then I'm after this, I also start stealing Sif's um um skincare products as well.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: So I'm I'm just like, you know, raiding her kind of bathroom um um supplement and closet uh space.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: I love that though.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: I love that you're so I love that you are so open to it.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: You know, as a man, like I I I really enjoy when I hear men say, well, you know what?
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: I I went into the, you know, went into the skincare drawers and I had to try some things.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: And I love hearing that, you know, because you don't hear that a lot about men, you know, looking into just skin health and overall health.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, who doesn't want good skin?
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: Is the honesty, like once Zips like introduced me to it, I was like, okay, this stuff, I I mean, I just don't know why you wouldn't want it.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: It is amazing to be super open to it.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so Nish started stealing all my stuff, and uh when when it came to skincare, he'd gotten really good at like you know, stealing the right things because like it was really like plainly labeled, right?
- 5:06SPEAKER_02: Like it was just like you know, this is for brightening or this is for dry skin, and he got so good at it.
- 5:13SPEAKER_02: And when the two of us were, you know, just talking about it, we realized that there was this white space in the wellness world whereby you know, you actually had to do so much research, and the whole process of finding a product for an issue was so convoluted that it was near impossible.
- 5:34SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, Nish could steal my skincare with ease, but it when it came to my supplements, he'd have to ask me for help, right?
- 5:40SPEAKER_02: And like, even really like I'd have to be doing all this research to find supplements, and you know, everything looked really clinical.
- 5:48SPEAKER_02: And so we decided that we really wanted to create a brand which would, you know, have targeted supplements for specific problems really streamlined, straightforward, efficacious, and beautiful as well.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: Right, right, of course.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: And, you know, I love that you are, you know, bringing all of these components together because oftentimes, you know, when you have a journey where you're finding things that are really working, um, I think people often don't know how to get this out there, you know what I mean, and and have be appealing to anybody looking at it.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: I know when I first uh, you know, saw your products, I was like, I just I love how this looks, I love how it feels.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: You know, it's something that um, you know, I can put in my my bathroom, you know, closet and then just reach for every night, you know, if I'm whenever I'm taking a supplement.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: So I love what you did, like the whole package.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we put so much kind of um effort and love into them because one of the things you wanted to do is humanize our brand.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: I feel like, especially right now, it's so amazing to be able to put a piece of us um into the company.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: So we did that with the with the name, the brandings, for example, the the name array.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: Um, it's obviously uh it comes from the place where we want to build an array of different products, but it's also kind of like a ray of um sunshine, which kind of describes Sith a lot.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: And also the way we have it um kind of written out is is actually derived from code because I had come from a software development background, and so it actually comes from this way that you write code and software development.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: So you put that together.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: Um so when you look at the branding of her company, it's like very human, humanizing.
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: And so we wanted to- Wow, I love that! Oh my gosh.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: Can you tell me more about the code thing?
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: That's really interesting.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it is, right, Ectas.
- 7:34SPEAKER_02: So it this is funny because you know, like I come from a creative background, but niche is from tech.
- 7:41SPEAKER_02: And when it came to the branding and the packaging of the product, we knew that it like it had to kind of have a piece of both of us in there.
- 7:51SPEAKER_02: And like, of course, this isn't something that like we talk about a lot, but when it came to the crafting of it, we were like, how do we represent niche?
- 7:58SPEAKER_02: He's like so much harder.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: And so and so essentially what we said, okay, okay, like um, how do we integrate niche then?
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: How do we integrate software development into this?
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: And essentially the word array in software development, uh, it's a it's a it's a it's kind of like a data structure where you can um put a bunch of different things and store it in a thing called an array.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: And so we said, okay, well, the name of the company is array.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: We're building something that you'll solve a lot of problems, and so essentially you'll build a lot of new products.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: So why don't we literally take the syntax, which is the way you write code for an array and implement it into the name itself?
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: So when you see the word bloat, we have those double apostroph apostrophes and the square brackets.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: That is exactly how you have an array in code, and so every single one has the same syntax around it.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: It's like such a minor detail, which I that is brilliant.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: No, it's not minor.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: That's brilliant.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: That alone would make me buy your product, seriously.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: That's so cool.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: No, I really love that because it's you know, here's the thing like, I think the more intelligence you can show your consumers, like, you know what I mean, in terms of like who is behind this brand and what is the level of just intelligence and wisdom and knowledge that's going behind this.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: That really is attracting, you know, for for any brand.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: I I would rather see what you're what you just described than any brand that just says, hey, this is a brightening serum.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: Enjoy.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: It's just a personalization aspect.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: That's what I mean.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: It's like, you know, you're connecting with your consumer that way.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: And I really love that.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: So truly brilliant, truly brilliant.
- 9:35SPEAKER_01: I want to actually talk to you guys.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: I want to ask you, I have so many questions because um, you know, I've seen here, um, Sif, that you, you know, you have an amazing background in the beauty industry.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: So can you tell me a little bit more about that?
- 9:48SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: So um I have my blog, Icing and glitter, and I worked as a content creator for a very long time.
- 9:56SPEAKER_02: Prior to that, I used to work at Elle.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: So as a content creator, you know, I'm like a hyper consumer.
- 10:02SPEAKER_02: And even obviously in editorial, it's the same thing, right?
- 10:05SPEAKER_02: You're constantly interacting with products.
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: And I was I started my career off in fashion, but then I kind of got more and more into skincare and wellness.
- 10:14SPEAKER_02: Like I think that the transition happened more or less together.
- 10:18SPEAKER_02: And I just love to nerd out when it comes to ingredients and products.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: And I think like my love for skincare and beauty really spilled over to wellness and like vice versa.
- 10:29SPEAKER_02: So, you know, with that background, I also have my podcast, um, the Dream Bigger Podcast.
- 10:34SPEAKER_02: And it was just a lot of learning, to be honest.
- 10:37SPEAKER_02: You know, like I've had, you know, a lot of opportunities to speak to experts and kind of understand um wellness from like a very deep level, also understand like the issues that a lot of women are constantly dealing with when it comes to wellness as well.
- 10:54SPEAKER_02: So that's also from the background, and you know, it's it's been like I think that so much of my background informs our decisions as business owners with Array and like how how we choose to kind of create our brand.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I I really, really like that you have that background because it's given you such a, you know, like you said, a 360 perspective, you know, a really an aerial view.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: And I think that's very important these days because of, you know, just obviously I'm sure you guys know this, you know, the the whole market and the whole industry is so saturated right now, you know, and whether that's supplements or, you know, actual topical products, it's just very hard to sift through that.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: So when, you know, when I hear as a consumer that the person I'm I'm you know buying a product from, their brand is coming from a place of just, you know, you know what you're doing, you've seen the industry, you've seen the missing pieces, that is huge.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: Like that's a huge like selling point, I think, because for me, a skin expert can come in so many different ways, you know what I mean?
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: Shapes and forms.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: It's not just a dermatologist or a doctor, it's you know, the be the beauty industry has a wealth of knowledge, you know.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: So I love that.
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: Thank you for uh telling us all about your background.
- 12:04SPEAKER_01: I want to actually ask about the whole formulation because I know with supplements it's very tricky.
- 12:10SPEAKER_01: And I can you guys walk me through the journey of you know creating the products themselves and you know, what are some of the things you had to go through, the hurdles or you know, any of that kind of stuff?
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: Honestly, the the one of the first things when we were kind of coming up with the formulation was that we we had to find someone who was really, really kind of good at creating these kind of formulas and had a lot of experience with this.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: And so this is where our um formulator, uh Dr.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: Natalie uh Malgan came in.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: And so um Siv had met with her a while ago.
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so it was really funny because um the first person I told when Nish and I were thinking about a ray was a very close friend of mine who's an excellent nutritionist.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: And I told her, and I was like, you know, like thinking about like this this brand, and like, you know, we really want to create efficacious products.
- 12:59SPEAKER_02: Would you happen to know any naturopathic doctors who may be good at formulating?
- 13:03SPEAKER_02: And she's like, Yeah, definitely like one of my best friends.
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: And so I meet Dr.
- 13:08SPEAKER_02: Natalie, who's our now formulator.
- 13:11SPEAKER_02: But back then, she was the first doctor that I met with.
- 13:15SPEAKER_02: And right then and there, like I had this gut feeling, she was just so smart.
- 13:19SPEAKER_02: And I was, I came home and I told Nish, I was like, you know, she's our girl.
- 13:22SPEAKER_02: And he's like, What are you talking about?
- 13:23SPEAKER_02: Like, meet with others, and I did, but I knew that she was our girl.
- 13:27SPEAKER_02: And so she, you know, we we brought her on as our formulator.
- 13:31SPEAKER_02: She's extremely talented, like over 15 years of experience as a naturopathic doctor, excellent formulator.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: And one of the first things when we were kind of talking to her is she asked us, Do you want to build a brand that's just trendy and that's wants to sell, or do you want to build a brand that actually really works?
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: And Seth and I are sitting there like, of course, you want to build something that works.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: That's the reason why we're actually building this brand all together.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: And so we did so much research looking into every single company out there and looking at all their ingredients, their dosages, um, whether it works or not.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: And the funny thing is, and it's really unfortunate, but a lot of the products out there, they have really low dosages, they use some, and it's literally impossible, given how many ingredients they have in their in their formulas, to actually be effective and work.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: And so we said, okay, well, why don't we use you know really simple, strong, clean ingredients, but very few of them, but double down on the dosing so that you actually get the right amount and you'll actually see the effects of them and they will and they will definitely work.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: So that's kind of how we went about it.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: And so we were lucky because we had a small manufacturer in Canada who could kind of producing small batches for us.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: So you would sit there and you know, you know, guinea pig all these supplements with us.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: And the first time you would we started taking these, like, oh my god, these really, really work.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: And that's uh with with both of the formulas for bloat and gum.
- 14:54SPEAKER_01: Did you guys okay?
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: This is a really random question, and and you know, like I I'm not I'm just naturally curious.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: Is when you were testing the products and you were in the um, you know, in that whole process with supplements, I'm just always like in awe of how you how they're created.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: So, did you ever have like a sample that you like had a bad reaction to, or like something that just was not right?
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: I mean, did something go bad during the development or was it pretty smooth?
- 15:21SPEAKER_02: So um there is a story.
- 15:23SPEAKER_02: So it's not that the product was bad, actually, like both the first versions that we got of both the products were like really, really good.
- 15:30SPEAKER_02: But initially we'd thought of releasing bloat as a powder.
- 15:34SPEAKER_02: And um, so that was our V1.
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: And so I remember like we Nish and I we knew we were gonna get our like actual sample of that product, and so we had gone out for Italian food, and I have gluten intolerance, so I just have really bad stomach cramps anytime I eat like a lot of glutinous food.
- 15:55SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, do you have celiacs?
- 15:56SPEAKER_02: No, not celiac, but it's just like it's like like severe sensitivity, essentially.
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, no, same, same.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: I get it.
- 16:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so you know, I Nish and I had gone out for date night.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: Um, I'd eaten a lot of pasta.
- 16:10SPEAKER_02: I had come home and I was like kind of doubled over in pain.
- 16:13SPEAKER_02: And I was like, this is it.
- 16:14SPEAKER_02: This is, you know, like let's do or die, like let's try it.
- 16:18SPEAKER_02: And we tried the formula, it was amazing, but the powder, Ecta, it was, oh my gosh, like it smelled horrible.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: Okay, she smelled horrible.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: I really liked it.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: No, no, no.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: If you like, if you like, you know, um herbal things, it was amazing.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: Like, I like I actually love opening the bottle and smelling the bottle in the nappy.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but absolutely hated.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: Men don't have the same amount of sensory like receptors, I feel like in their nose as we do, though.
- 16:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, right.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: And the other thing was that because of like the kind of um the way the herbs were, it anytime you opened the bottle, it would just kind of come out and you'd be snorting the herbs.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: And just it was just like a whole thing.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: So that was, I guess, like, you know, it's part of formulation and like going through that iteration and realizing, okay, no, we, you know, we want to encapsulate it.
- 17:09SPEAKER_02: And then when it came to the encapsulation process, like again, like we were really, really particular that no, we need this to be vegan, we need this to be as clean as possible.
- 17:18SPEAKER_02: We don't want to go down the tablet route, we don't want to add any fillers.
- 17:21SPEAKER_02: So finding the manufacturer who had that like, you know, like vegan capsule with like like just a shell, essentially.
- 17:29SPEAKER_02: So that that's basically like our formulation journey.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: But even apart from that, I remember when we were trying to source everything organic, and that was super hard to do because every single ingredient is really hard to find those ingredients organic, um, all from the manufacturer.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: So we were talking to people in Europe, in the states, in Canada, and like literally our our products are formulated from three different countries.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: Um all into the single manufacturer, they had to encapsulate them, and then we're looking at the amount of each formula because we don't want to add any fillers in there.
- 18:00SPEAKER_02: You mean source?
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, sorry, we're sourcing it from two different countries, but also looking at the amount in each formula because you know, we didn't want to add any fillers in there.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: So we're like, okay, well, let's add a little bit more bromine or let's add a little bit more um whatever that might be.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: And so it's like a very nitty-gritty process.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: It took us quite time to get that together.
- 18:18SPEAKER_01: It was like that's why I asked you guys because I can imagine how tedious this process would be because you're not creating, like I said, you know, you're not creating just something like a serum or you know what I mean, like a cleanser.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: You're creating something that's going into the body and it's it's a you know, it's really helping from within, you know, it's beauty from within.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: So I can imagine how tedious that would be.
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: And I love that you guys have gone through this long route, you know, that's really, really good.
- 18:43SPEAKER_01: I know there are a lot of vitamins and supplements out there, and I'm not gonna lie to you, but you know, you know, both like both me and my fiance, like we're not into like natural supplements at all because I'm scared that the other people that are doing it, they haven't done what you guys just described.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: Like they're they're not like you know, going in and making sure the ingredients are coming from the right places, making sure the formulation is perfect.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: And that's the biggest thing I think that scares a lot of consumers about, you know, um, over-the-counter supplements.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: But I I really love everything you just said, Nish.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: This is that's amazing.
- 19:15SPEAKER_02: Totally.
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: And the other thing I want to add here is like actually, you know, that what you're saying is like so valid.
- 19:22SPEAKER_02: And it's actually something we saw when we were speaking to doctors as well, like naturopathic doctors, whereby there was this like almost a gap whereby they they felt like unless something was professional grade, it was really not up to the mark, right?
- 19:36SPEAKER_02: Like there are professional grade like natural products as well, but anything that was like kind of over-the-counter drugstore, like there was this almost like mistrust when it came to naturopathic doctors because they felt like the the companies that were producing these things were just not up there.
- 19:51SPEAKER_02: And so that's why if it was so important to actually have a doctor formulate it, not just like go to a lab and like have them sort of give it to us, and we don't have an actual person with tons of experience behind you know the product creation.
- 20:06SPEAKER_02: So, you know, we really wanted to cater to people who are the skeptics and who, you know, have questions about efficacy.
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: Like we we wanted to have a doctor on the team who who could kind of take care of that.
- 20:19SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: No, I love that.
- 20:21SPEAKER_01: Again, you did it the right way.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: That's amazing.
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: And you know, here's the thing I I have a problem with, you know, it's very hard to admit when you don't know everything, right?
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: So if like it's it's I I see that a lot with entrepreneurs that you know, you want to believe that you know everything, but you sometimes you have to go out and get the experts because there's no way to create something without that expert knowledge base.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: So I'm glad that you actually went to a nutritionist.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: Now, one question I have is that, you know, in terms of just because I'm South Asian and I, you know, I all of us here, I'm sure, understand that like with South Asian, you know, products, there's a lot of Ayurveda involved, you know, especially when I think of supplements.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: I think of like, you know, just back in the day, my grandmother using turmeric or ginger.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: Like, did any of that play into the vision you guys had?
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: Or um was it something that you wanted to stay away from Ayurveda?
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: You know, what you know thing that's really funny is that we we come across these ingredients right now which are kind of trendy.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: And then whenever we're discussing this with a natural fact doctor, she's like, this existed literally a thousand years ago.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: All of a sudden it's become trendy, and now everybody's talking about it, but we've been using it, you know, in practices for literally like hundreds of years.
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: Because I mean, hierarchic or not, but basically these kind of natural ingredients are such a like they've been around for a very, very long time.
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: It's just about knowing um how to extract them, how to use them, and what to use them for.
- 21:43SPEAKER_00: And so, like, for example, ginger is just so great for something like this.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: And so we knew we had to use it.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: Obviously, certain things become trendy, but I think that it's it's really just comes down to find the right ingredients and doing what you're doing about what you're doing the right things with it and solving the right problems with it.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: It but uh it it was it's it's not like all of a sudden there's a new ingredient that popped up yesterday that we did not talk about before, right?
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: So, I mean there's an inspiration there, but it's not like you know, you're not like dung ho Ayurveda, which I which I actually like that because I don't think Ayurvedic brands are very like well researched.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: That's my honest opinion, that's my personal opinion.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: Everyone out there, you can leave me hate mail, but genuinely, I I just don't think that there's like you said, Nish, I know you you guys were talking about the dosing, that aspect is so unique about your brand.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: I love that you're you know addressing the idea of dosing because you know, when I first started this podcast, I know that um my initial conversations, that was my biggest question for any skincare brand, right?
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: Is like how much of what are you putting into your products and does it really work at that concentration?
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: You know, so that so I I really like that you guys have gone this very, very like scientific route, you know, with your with your whole idea.
- 22:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 22:55SPEAKER_02: And you know what?
- 22:55SPEAKER_02: Like we I think like the best way to explain it is it's like hardcore science mixed with like these like very ancient remedies that have been there, right?
- 23:06SPEAKER_02: But like, you know, when when you even think like we really like to get into even just the concept of like actives, right?
- 23:14SPEAKER_02: Because you can take a little bit of turmeric, but that's not really gonna do much for you because it's the curcumin that you're looking for and it's active in like a very small amount.
- 23:23SPEAKER_02: And like this is just an example with turmeric, which isn't in our product, but it's like that with any herb that you use, right?
- 23:30SPEAKER_02: So yeah, for us, it's really important to educate people about those active ingredients to talk about the fact that you know we use high extract ratios as well, which is kind of an extraction method that's that's that you use to get the highest kind of active ingredients from each herb.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: And also when it comes to the plants itself, like if you're getting the part of the stem or the root or the leaves, like depending on which part of the plant you get it from, it completely changes how um efficacious and how potent that ingredient is.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: And so the science part of it is okay, like how do you extract it?
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: And then which part of the plant are you extracting it from?
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: And then, of course, how are you putting all that together?
- 24:09SPEAKER_00: And that is kind of your modern day science and manufacturing method that make these make specifically um our supplements so strong.
- 24:17SPEAKER_00: But that is kind of a mixture of that, plus, of course, the knowledge of knowing the right ingredients and then putting those together, it's like, okay, now you really have some magical things going on.
- 24:26SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: And I think you know, what you just described, Nish, it's that made me think of like botany versus like at-home kitchen mixture of random things in my fridge.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 24:36SPEAKER_01: Like it's like that's like the distinction between the two.
- 24:40SPEAKER_01: And I I completely, completely agree with you.
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: Um, I want to shift focus a little bit because I, you know, I'm I'm just very excited to have you guys here as fellow people of color.
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: You know, there's no way for me to say that any other way.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: I want to talk about diversity.
- 24:53SPEAKER_01: I want to talk about how hard it's been, um, or if it's been hard for you to really, you know, make your company stand out more because, you know, I I know I was looking at some statistics the other month and it was talking about how brands that are owned by women and men of color are do actually, you know, they do worse than than other, you know, races.
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: And I hated that.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: That really lit a fire under me.
- 25:15SPEAKER_01: So I want to talk about that, the whole diversity aspect of your your brand, your company.
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: Um, what's your journey been like in that way?
- 25:23SPEAKER_02: Honestly, uh, so as a woman of color, and like I'm sure Nish can also relate to this as a person of color.
- 25:30SPEAKER_02: Like, for me, one thing that I noticed growing up, and like as I've kind of gotten into wellness is that there was not a lot of representation.
- 25:39SPEAKER_02: And so, you know, we we wanted it to be a company that really focused on diversity within our own company, right?
- 25:48SPEAKER_02: Like, of course, like we can't sit there complaining about what the world looks like, but like you can be that change, right?
- 25:55SPEAKER_02: So for us, that diversity factor, like our hiring practices, like what we, you know, all of that is just incredibly important to us.
- 26:03SPEAKER_02: Whether our company does better or worse based on race, of course, like we can't tell, but like we can just do our best to, you know, be that company with the highest kind, like sorry, the best quality products and you know, the the greatest internal team and the best hiring practices, all of those different factors.
- 26:24SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 26:25SPEAKER_01: And I I get I totally get you, Seth.
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: And I, you know, I'm I'm with you there.
- 26:29SPEAKER_01: And that's really the intelligent way to approach things.
- 26:32SPEAKER_01: But you know, for me, I sit here every day and I talk to people or I read posts on Instagram, and it's just a random woman who came up with something and now her blend, her brand is completely blowing up.
- 26:45SPEAKER_01: And I sit there and I wonder to myself, I know so many intelligent, you know, men and women of color, and it's like such a struggle.
- 26:51SPEAKER_01: Like to, you know, it's like we have to check off like 15 different boxes.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, it's like everything is perfect.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: So that's why it has to be that because, you know, it be yeah.
- 27:01SPEAKER_02: You definitely have to work harder, Ecta, right?
- 27:03SPEAKER_02: Like that's just something that I've realized that, like, you know, as a person of color, in order for me to kind of get ahead, like I probably am working a lot harder than people out there, but it's it's it's okay.
- 27:16SPEAKER_02: Like I do it and Nish does it, and we hope that by putting ourselves out there as you know, people of color in the wellness space, that we can also inspire other people to kind of do the same and hopefully also succeed.
- 27:30SPEAKER_01: Absolutely, absolutely.
- 27:32SPEAKER_01: I completely, completely, you know, echo that.
- 27:34SPEAKER_01: And, you know, I I love that I love that you guys have kind of stuck to this from the beginning.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: I think, you know, I had prior conversations with um some people, you know, that I had on the show, especially editors, and the whole topic came up of inclusivity and diversity needs to be built into a brand from the beginning.
- 27:50SPEAKER_01: And I think this is a shining example of that, you know, and I everyone listening out there, you know, if you're looking for brands that, you know, kind of go with that ideology of I want to support more different, you know, different brands owned by different types of people, like you need to you need to do your homework a little bit.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: You know what I'm saying?
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: Like that's that's my whole point, is like open up your mind and realize that, you know, um there's a lot of great stuff out there, you know, and and oftentimes it gets overlooked.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: So um thank you for answering that.
- 28:20SPEAKER_01: It was just, I know it's a very like touchy, you know, topic sometimes, but I I really not at all.
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: Like I think it's really important that you bring it up, right?
- 28:28SPEAKER_02: Because it's true.
- 28:29SPEAKER_02: Like even growing up and for for years, like I just never saw anyone, especially in the wellness space, who was who looked like me, you know, or who looked like an ish, it's just we're extremely underrepresented.
- 28:42SPEAKER_02: And so, you know, we we hope to kind of fill that gap.
- 28:46SPEAKER_00: And you know, one thing I noticed, Sith, is that as as we started building our company from the very from the very beginning, and we we were we had people primarily of color, and actually I would say everybody on the team uh is uh is a woman except for me, actually.
- 28:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: Um that's how you kind of uh built the company.
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: And what's really great about it is as we as we're growing, and we are obviously uh we've kind of emulated a lot of our uh marketing material and our stickers and the people in our in our branding and photography uh to be people of color or just very, very diverse in general.
- 29:17SPEAKER_00: And then when we get messages from our customers saying, you know, this sticker um looked like a girl who looked like me, and I like her skin color because it was this like uh you know caramel brown color, and that made me really happy.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: And that's when I was like, oh wow, this is so amazing to hear.
- 29:33SPEAKER_00: Like I had no idea that you know that could actually light up someone's day, but it does.
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: And this and I are doing this um very intentionally because we wanted everybody to feel very inclusive.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: It's just something that I think you know it's kind of the way the world should work.
- 29:49SPEAKER_00: And so we were we've been doing this, and to see our customers relate back to that is like, okay, this is like it's really it's a really happy, happy moment.
- 29:57SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 29:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's you know, that's truly rewarding.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 30:01SPEAKER_01: Um, I actually, you know, I I want to ask you guys in terms of um just the business aspect of uh creating this, like what are some things like do you have any advice for like you know, young entrepreneurs out there?
- 30:12SPEAKER_01: Because I think that's really important for us to shed some light for people, you know.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: Um it's I think there's a lot of people out there that want to create something beautiful, but they don't know what the first steps are.
- 30:23SPEAKER_01: So if you guys were to like give any kind of nuggets of knowledge, you know, for someone listening, um, do you have anything?
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think the first thing is just when Sif and I started, we really had no idea what it would be.
- 30:37SPEAKER_00: We just had an idea.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: But the one thing that we were so good at was just trying different things out and trying them out quickly and experimenting a lot.
- 30:44SPEAKER_00: And by the way, this is when Sif and I both had full-time jobs.
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: I mean, both had some really like we had pretty intense time-consuming jobs.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: And so when we were when we were trying these things out, we were always experimenting, and we were so um kind of naive as to what we were building out, and that naivety really, really helps because you are new to the space, there's so many people who will tell you no, there's so many people who say, well, you know, the supplement market, well, that's really crowded.
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: Um, and the great thing I've learned is that you have to know something that nobody else knows.
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: Like if you have a unique insight that nobody else really knows, and you're able to um kind of execute on it, you're able to be right on it, then all of a sudden it doesn't matter what anybody else does, and the only thing that matters is kind of how the world and and your customers react to it.
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: So seeing that kind of a uh feedback, even though a lot of people were saying no, was like, okay, well, let's keep working on this.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: We believe in something, and having just that conviction, even if everybody else doesn't really believe in your idea, it's it's a really tough but important thing to keep in mind, especially in the early days when you're just starting out.
- 31:50SPEAKER_02: Um if I can get a tip, it would be to kind of like build fast and kind of modify later if necessary, and don't wait for something to be perfect.
- 32:05SPEAKER_02: So, actually, like I have a really funny story about this.
- 32:08SPEAKER_02: Um, when Nish and I got our first sort of like bottles which had already been labeled up of product, and this was gonna be like our first, you know, batch of product that we were gonna sell, and we were so excited.
- 32:21SPEAKER_02: And when it came, the label looked shiny, okay?
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: And it was just like kind of like it just didn't look like what it was supposed to look like, and we were devastated.
- 32:30SPEAKER_02: And I Nish and I had discussed, like, okay, what do we do?
- 32:33SPEAKER_02: Like, do we send it back?
- 32:35SPEAKER_02: Like, do they delabel everything?
- 32:37SPEAKER_02: Like, what do we do here?
- 32:38SPEAKER_02: Like, do we waste a lot more money to get new labels?
- 32:41SPEAKER_02: We didn't know, like bootstrap startup.
- 32:44SPEAKER_02: So that same week, I had an interview like for my podcast with Maria Hatsiste Stephanie's.
- 32:52SPEAKER_02: She's like the founder of Rodeal.
- 32:55SPEAKER_02: And I had, I literally pulled out my phone and I was like, How bad is this?
- 32:59SPEAKER_02: Do we just like get rid of all of this and like start over?
- 33:03SPEAKER_02: And she looked at it and she laughed and she's like, Do you know how many packaging issues we had when we were starting up?
- 33:08SPEAKER_02: Why on earth do you throw out these labels, print new ones?
- 33:11SPEAKER_02: She's like, just go to market.
- 33:12SPEAKER_02: And I thought that that was so wise because I like you can just get caught up on the details when you're a new startup because it's your baby.
- 33:20SPEAKER_02: And if you you can you can constantly iterate to make it perfect, and then you'll just never release it, right?
- 33:27SPEAKER_02: Like it's just important to go to market with whatever you have and iterate based on the feedback you're getting.
- 33:34SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: That's really excellent advice because I know actually I've talked to small brands that are have that exact problem.
- 33:40SPEAKER_01: So I'm really glad that you shared that story.
- 33:43SPEAKER_00: Like it took us about a year to get our packaging perfect.
- 33:46SPEAKER_00: It took us about a year, and three different manufacturing runs through like, oh my God, okay, this is actually exactly this is it.
- 33:52SPEAKER_00: But until then, it was always tweaking and trying and different things, and the color isn't exactly what we want it to be, but there's always these problems.
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: And you know, at the end of the day, packaging is packaging, but you know, your product is what matters.
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: And I, you know, it that's my opinion as a consumer.
- 34:10SPEAKER_01: And it's like, you know, you guys obviously have a killer product, you know, it's it's that's what I as a consumer am attracted to.
- 34:17SPEAKER_01: But, you know, yeah, that's that's some amazing advice.
- 34:19SPEAKER_01: Thank you for sharing that.
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: I actually want, but you know, before we before we wrap it up, I want to go a little bit um backwards and talk more about formulations because I want to talk about maybe certain ingredients that are highlights um in the formulations.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: If you guys could tell us a little bit more about them, um, some of the properties um that you looked for in the in the ingredients that you chose.
- 34:40SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 34:40SPEAKER_02: So I guess I can start by talking about bloat.
- 34:43SPEAKER_02: So our bloat capsule, it's essentially five herbs along with one digestive enzyme.
- 34:50SPEAKER_02: So when it came to the formulation of our bloat product, we knew that we wanted a product which would target digestion as a whole.
- 35:00SPEAKER_02: And in order to kind of create that sort of product, you have to understand that bloating happens because of a multitude of different reasons.
- 35:09SPEAKER_02: And, you know, we we heard a lot of stories about people taking enzymes, just digestive enzymes, and they're bloating not going away.
- 35:16SPEAKER_02: So they'd be like, oh, this like, you know, nothing's helping me.
- 35:18SPEAKER_02: Well, the thing is that a digestive enzyme only helps you if the reason you're bloated is because of your body's inability to produce the right amount of enzymes.
- 35:28SPEAKER_02: But if you're bloated for any other reason, um then that digestive enzyme won't help you.
- 35:34SPEAKER_02: So, you know, we wanted to create a product which would have a digestive enzyme, but also five other herbs or like however many other herbs to kind of ensure that every issue that you were dealing with was mitigated.
- 35:47SPEAKER_02: So when it came to the enzyme that we were using, I guess like we can highlight bromolane, which we really love.
- 35:54SPEAKER_02: It's a it's a digestive enzyme which we've extracted from pineapple and it's extremely potent.
- 35:59SPEAKER_02: So that I think is like the ingredient that I would highlight from our bloat formula.
- 36:06SPEAKER_00: Right is that the reason why we actually launched Bloat and Come Together is because these issues go so hand in hand.
- 36:14SPEAKER_00: So whenever you are feeling anxious, your body goes into fight or flight mode.
- 36:19SPEAKER_00: Um, and when you do that, your your body slows down, your digestive system slows down, which actually makes you feel more bloated.
- 36:24SPEAKER_00: And when you get more bloated, you get more anxious, and this is kind of like a viral downward loop.
- 36:29SPEAKER_00: And so digestion and anxiety go so hand in hand.
- 36:32SPEAKER_00: So we said, okay, why don't we go and create products that solve those issues as a whole?
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: And so that's kind of why we came up with those two products.
- 36:39SPEAKER_00: Of course, the ingredients in those products really help, but also the products themselves were actually designed to kind of help specifically with those two issues that go hand in hand as a whole.
- 36:49SPEAKER_00: So that's kind of why we came up with both the products together as well.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and that's you know what?
- 36:54SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna say this, you know, from my the medical standpoint, this is the perfect combination for anyone with Hashimoto's.
- 37:00SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, a lot of Hashimoto's is like a worse version of hypothyroidism.
- 37:05SPEAKER_01: And a lot of those patients, like when they come in, their some of their biggest complaints are what you just said, Mish.
- 37:10SPEAKER_01: Like it's literally the obviously the digestion issue.
- 37:13SPEAKER_01: And again, you know, going back to the gluten aspect of it all, you know, stuff that you were talking about, it's that's what their problem is as well.
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: They have this, you know, inability to properly digest.
- 37:24SPEAKER_01: And, you know, with that comes anxiety.
- 37:27SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 37:28SPEAKER_01: With that comes, you know, just feeling terrible overall.
- 37:31SPEAKER_01: So I completely, I completely agree with you.
- 37:33SPEAKER_01: And the data, the data definitely shows that, you know, in the in the medical world.
- 37:37SPEAKER_01: So I I love that.
- 37:38SPEAKER_01: I love that you combined these two aspects together.
- 37:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was really just important for us to kind of produce those products which told the story and helped target those issues, which so many people deal with on a day-to-day basis and holistically target it.
- 37:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:57SPEAKER_00: I feel like, you know, okay, so I mean, obviously, women are really in touch with their bodies and they do this all the time, but we have so many men who always ask us, like, okay, can I take this as well?
- 38:05SPEAKER_00: And we say, Yes, of course you can.
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: It's kind of like all kinds of bodies is not only for women, because I I feel like a lot of these things you kind of you kind of feel, but you don't know how to describe them specifically.
- 38:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, with men especially, I've I've noticed that they may be dealing with anxiety or digestive issues, but they actually don't realize that they're dealing with it.
- 38:26SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, I remember the first time I gave Nish bloat, he was like, Oh, wait, my stomach feels a lot better.
- 38:32SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, like you, you he didn't even have the understanding that he was feeling subpar.
- 38:40SPEAKER_01: It's that it's okay.
- 38:41SPEAKER_01: It's okay.
- 38:41SPEAKER_01: I blame the Y chromosome.
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: You know, there's a lot of problems that need to be addressed.
- 38:48SPEAKER_01: No, but you're so that's such a great point, though.
- 38:51SPEAKER_01: I agree.
- 38:52SPEAKER_01: I have seen that, you know, every every time I know any man in my life, you know, whether it's a friend or whatever, like you guys just don't like taking any medicine or you know, anything, and you don't know what's wrong with you.
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: So I completely agree.
- 39:06SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah.
- 39:07SPEAKER_00: It's so true, but I think this is, I mean, this is why.
- 39:10SPEAKER_00: But I at this point, it's just like, look, the body's the body, the body reacts, um, you know, regardless of what gender you are to specific things in a certain way, and it's just really important to take care of it.
- 39:20SPEAKER_01: And absolutely, yeah, no, absolutely.
- 39:23SPEAKER_01: You know, we all need nutrients and we all need to be healthy.
- 39:27SPEAKER_01: So, all the men out there, please don't, you know, ride it out, be in tune with your bodies.
- 39:31SPEAKER_01: It's important.
- 39:32SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, so I I I completely agree.
- 39:34SPEAKER_01: And I I want to thank you guys so much.
- 39:36SPEAKER_01: This has been amazing, and I love what you're doing.
- 39:39SPEAKER_01: I love all the the thought and the creativity behind it.
- 39:42SPEAKER_01: This is beautiful.
- 39:43SPEAKER_01: So it thank you for giving me the honor of speaking to you and really learning about your brand.
- 39:47SPEAKER_02: Thank you for having us.
- 39:49SPEAKER_02: This was super fun to chat with you.
- 39:51SPEAKER_02: And yeah, we're we're really excited that we were able to do this.
- 39:53SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much, Ecta.
