- 0:09Speaker 1: first lineup using code HMA, get 150 in lineups instantly. 1984.
- 0:18Speaker 1: How many of you guys just let me know in
- 0:19Speaker 1: the comments weren't even alive yet. I'll, I'll own up
- 0:22Speaker 1: to it. I know that you guys are a little
- 0:24Speaker 1: older than I am. I wasn't, I wasn't alive in 1984,
- 0:27Speaker 1: born in 90 for those asking, um, That's how long
- 0:31Speaker 1: the record stood. Eddie Brown, Boston College, the Hail Flutie game.
- 0:38Speaker 1: 220 receiving yards on a night that Miami football fans
- 0:42Speaker 1: have spent 42 years trying to forget entirely for different reasons.
- 0:47Speaker 1: 220 yards. That number survived everything. It survived national championships.
- 0:54Speaker 1: It survived dynasty years. It survived every great era of
- 0:58Speaker 1: Miami receivers who came through Coral Gables and put their
- 1:03Speaker 1: name on the wall. 42 seasons with nobody touching it.
- 1:08Speaker 1: And then on a Friday night in Palo Alto, California,
- 1:11Speaker 1: against a team the ACC media picked to finish dead
- 1:15Speaker 1: last in the conference final with most of the country sleeping.
- 1:20Speaker 1: A sophomore erased it before the third quarter was over.
- 1:24Speaker 1: The most unique thing about that sophomore is that tonight
- 1:27Speaker 1: should have been his very first college game. You'll remember
- 1:32Speaker 1: that Malachi Toney reclassified last year and should have been
- 1:36Speaker 1: having his senior season of high school. Toney had 12 catches,
- 1:40Speaker 1: 201 and 34 yards, three touchdowns, and a whole lot
- 1:45Speaker 1: of hurt Stanford Cardinal feelings. Miami finishes the game 45-6,
- 1:52Speaker 1: and here's the part that should make the rest of
- 1:54Speaker 1: college football uncomfortable. That might not even be the most
- 1:59Speaker 1: important thing that happened on Friday night. Let's start with
- 2:02Speaker 1: the obvious, because the obvious is genuinely absurd. Darian Mensah's
- 2:08Speaker 1: first snap as a Miami hurricane was a 48-yard completion
- 2:13Speaker 1: to Malachi Toney. Three plays later, Toney was in the
- 2:17Speaker 1: end zone on a 23-yard touchdown, and of course, he
- 2:20Speaker 1: hit the Heisman pose. Next drive, Mensah to Toney again,
- 2:24Speaker 1: two yards, touchdown, and another Heisman pose. Two possessions into
- 2:29Speaker 1: the season, and Miami's quarterback and Miami's receiver had already
- 2:33Speaker 1: turned a conference road opener into a campaign advertisement for
- 2:38Speaker 1: New York city, 27 of 30 for 400 yards and
- 2:45Speaker 1: five touchdowns. No, I'm not making up a crazy stat line.
- 2:50Speaker 1: That's just what your quarterback finished with tonight. 27 of 30.
- 2:54Speaker 1: He threw three incompletions in an entire football game. career
- 2:59Speaker 1: high in yards, career high in touchdowns in his first
- 3:02Speaker 1: start for a new program, 3000 miles from home on
- 3:07Speaker 1: a short notice Friday night kickoff. And he spread it
- 3:10Speaker 1: around seven different receivers, caught passes, three touchdowns to Tony,
- 3:14Speaker 1: one to Upshaw, one to bar Kate, the kid that
- 3:16Speaker 1: followed him from Duke Miami scored touchdowns on six of
- 3:20Speaker 1: its first seven drives, six of seven. So let's ask
- 3:25Speaker 1: the question. Everybody's already asking on social media. Is it
- 3:29Speaker 1: possible that two players from the same offense both end
- 3:32Speaker 1: up in New York? It would be pretty crazy. But
- 3:36Speaker 1: here's why it's not quite as crazy as it sounds.
- 3:39Speaker 1: It has happened before. Different programs, different years, but the
- 3:43Speaker 1: sport has actually sent a quarterback and a skill player
- 3:47Speaker 1: from the same roster to the same ceremony. It'll require
- 3:51Speaker 1: two things in Miami this year. A team has to
- 3:54Speaker 1: keep winning big. And both players have to be undeniable.
- 4:00Speaker 1: In game one, Miami just checked both boxes. But here's
- 4:03Speaker 1: the catch, no pun intended. It's the same catch that
- 4:06Speaker 1: has burned Heisman campaigns for decades. Quarterbacks and receivers from
- 4:10Speaker 1: the same offense often split the story. I hate voters.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Not any of them personally, but I think oftentimes with
- 4:21Speaker 1: your AP poll and your coach's poll and the Heisman
- 4:23Speaker 1: and everything else, they're lazy. I don't think they're stupid.
- 4:27Speaker 1: I just think they're lazy. They want very clean narratives.
- 4:30Speaker 1: And when a quarterback throws for 400 yards and a
- 4:33Speaker 1: receiver catches 234 of them, half the country says the
- 4:36Speaker 1: quarterback made the receiver and the other half says the
- 4:39Speaker 1: receiver made the quarterback. Both of those takes are wrong.
- 4:44Speaker 1: But both of those takes cost votes. Here's what actually
- 4:48Speaker 1: helps Miami. I've talked about the schedule. They host FAMU
- 4:53Speaker 1: on Thursday. Then they go to Wake. Then they... They
- 4:56Speaker 1: have Central Michigan and Clemson on the road, Florida State
- 4:59Speaker 1: at home, Pittsburgh, North Carolina on the road, Notre Dame
- 5:01Speaker 1: in November. But there is exactly one currently ranked opponent
- 5:06Speaker 1: on that entire slate. That's a double-edged sword, and Canes
- 5:09Speaker 1: fans need to be honest about which edge cuts. The
- 5:12Speaker 1: good edge is that Miami has a legitimate path to
- 5:15Speaker 1: running the table and putting Mensah and Tony in front
- 5:18Speaker 1: of a national audience week after week with a perfect
- 5:21Speaker 1: record attached to their name. The bad edge is that
- 5:24Speaker 1: nobody hands out Heisman trophies for beating Central Michigan or FAMU,
- 5:28Speaker 1: which means every single one of those November stat lines
- 5:31Speaker 1: is going to get discounted unless the games in October
- 5:35Speaker 1: say something. Clemson on the road, Florida State at home,
- 5:38Speaker 1: Virginia Tech with James Franklin, and then, of course, that
- 5:41Speaker 1: Notre Dame game that we're all ready for. Those are
- 5:45Speaker 1: the games that turn statistics into cases. Tony has the
- 5:49Speaker 1: better story. He's the hometown kid, freshman All-American, record setter,
- 5:52Speaker 1: punt returner, the face of the sport. He's on the
- 5:55Speaker 1: freaking video game. Mensa has the better position. Quarterbacks win
- 5:59Speaker 1: this thing. That's just how it goes. So can they
- 6:02Speaker 1: both go? Yes. Will they both go? In my opinion,
- 6:05Speaker 1: only if Miami is undefeated in December. Anything less and
- 6:09Speaker 1: one of them probably gets left home. Before I go on,
- 6:12Speaker 1: we haven't announced this anywhere, but we are working on
- 6:16Speaker 1: a live State of the State show on Sunday before
- 6:19Speaker 1: Florida State even plays. We're working on getting Danny and
- 6:22Speaker 1: Allie together so that we can do a live show
- 6:24Speaker 1: reacting to what I assume will be two wins as
- 6:27Speaker 1: long as Florida doesn't screw the pooch. Should they lose
- 6:30Speaker 1: that game? I will tell you, we'll have 5,000 people
- 6:32Speaker 1: in the live show on Sunday morning. But set your clock.
- 6:34Speaker 1: I think we're shooting for 1030 a.m. on Sunday morning.
- 6:38Speaker 1: State of the state. I'll link it in the description.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Make sure you are subscribed. We've had a fun time
- 6:43Speaker 1: with it. I'm ready for Danny to take some victory
- 6:45Speaker 1: laps out there in Palo Alto. Now I want to
- 6:48Speaker 1: get to something else that I don't think people are
- 6:50Speaker 1: talking about. I don't know if they expect it to
- 6:52Speaker 1: be talking about after this game. And it's what I
- 6:55Speaker 1: tried to tell people all offseason that kept bringing this up.
- 7:01Speaker 1: We're going to spend some time talking about the trenches.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Mario would probably be mad at me if he watched this,
- 7:05Speaker 1: which I'm sure he doesn't. Good for him. But it
- 7:08Speaker 1: is a long plane ride back, coach. So if you do,
- 7:09Speaker 1: let me know. He'd probably be mad at me for
- 7:11Speaker 1: not starting here. But all offseason, the story around Miami
- 7:16Speaker 1: was the same. This defense lost Ruben Payne Jr. to
- 7:20Speaker 1: the NFL. They lost Akeem Mesidor to the NFL. That's
- 7:24Speaker 1: two of the most disruptive front seven players in the
- 7:27Speaker 1: entire conference, really the country, walking out the door in
- 7:30Speaker 1: the same draft. And on offense, almost a handful of
- 7:34Speaker 1: your starting five was gone as well. Miami replaced them
- 7:39Speaker 1: with vets like Matthew McCoy and Okunlula. Miami then handed
- 7:43Speaker 1: real snaps to true freshman Jackson Cantwell, the five-star offensive
- 7:47Speaker 1: player of the year. The national take was pretty simple
- 7:51Speaker 1: and clean. Miami's got the skill, guys, but will they
- 7:55Speaker 1: be able to replace what they lost in the trenches?
- 7:58Speaker 1: And Friday night, that take took a lot of damage.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Look at what happened to Mensah. 27 of 30, 400 yards.
- 8:05Speaker 1: six of the first seven drives ending in touchdowns. You
- 8:08Speaker 1: don't do that if your quarterback is running for his life.
- 8:11Speaker 1: You just don't. Mintz is not a scrambler. He is
- 8:14Speaker 1: a pocket passer who needs time and clean platforms, and
- 8:18Speaker 1: he got both all night against a defense that, sure,
- 8:23Speaker 1: lost some guys, didn't have some people available this week. However,
- 8:29Speaker 1: the pass protection in a conference game on the road
- 8:31Speaker 1: in Stanford was great. On the other side of the ball,
- 8:35Speaker 1: a rebuilt defensive front held Stanford to six points. Two
- 8:39Speaker 1: field goals. Davis Warren, who I thought was really good,
- 8:43Speaker 1: threw for 310 yards. And there are things Miami needs
- 8:46Speaker 1: to clean up on the back end. Never found the
- 8:50Speaker 1: end zone. A defensive line that people had questions for.
- 8:56Speaker 1: brought pretty good pressure. Stanford did a really good job
- 8:58Speaker 1: in this game, I thought, of avoiding the pressure when
- 9:01Speaker 1: they could. Blunt had a sack. Lightfoot got after it.
- 9:05Speaker 1: This defensive line was fine tonight. There were plays that
- 9:10Speaker 1: needed to be cleaned up, but you saw how much
- 9:13Speaker 1: it impacted the game. How many times they were holding calls.
- 9:17Speaker 1: How many times Stanford just had to throw the ball away. Now,
- 9:22Speaker 1: here's where I'm going to be honest with you. Because
- 9:24Speaker 1: I'd rather be right and tell you the truth than
- 9:26Speaker 1: just have a bunch of fun tonight. The offensive line
- 9:29Speaker 1: was not perfect. Mario Cristobal was openly critical of it
- 9:33Speaker 1: late in the evening, early morning, because I'm a psycho
- 9:37Speaker 1: and stay up until 1 a.m. recording this for you guys,
- 9:40Speaker 1: on the SVP show. Miami's rushing attack didn't hit 100
- 9:44Speaker 1: yards before the starters came out. And that's against a
- 9:47Speaker 1: team that you don't think is going to be very
- 9:49Speaker 1: good in the ACC this year. So was the offensive
- 9:53Speaker 1: line elite or did they struggle? Well, I think it's
- 9:57Speaker 1: a split verdict. Miami's line. protected beautifully, yet they didn't
- 10:02Speaker 1: move people quite the way that Mario would have wanted.
- 10:05Speaker 1: I think those are two different skill sets. And Mario
- 10:07Speaker 1: even kind of gave a little bit of a justification.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Stanford put a lot of guys up in the box
- 10:11Speaker 1: and they said, we're going to try and take away
- 10:13Speaker 1: the run game. The pass protection was elite. The run blocking,
- 10:17Speaker 1: I think, still unproven, but with a caveat that if
- 10:21Speaker 1: you're going to put more guys in the box, good
- 10:24Speaker 1: luck with Malachi Toney running around back in the year secondary.
- 10:27Speaker 1: In a late game in the fourth quarter, we're going
- 10:30Speaker 1: to have to wait and see if Mario and Miami
- 10:32Speaker 1: still have that same, hey, we'll run the ball down
- 10:34Speaker 1: your throat for the entire evening. I think Miami looked
- 10:37Speaker 1: at what the defense did. They said, you want to
- 10:39Speaker 1: play us like this? We're okay with that. I think
- 10:42Speaker 1: they can beat you in multiple ways this year. You
- 10:45Speaker 1: want to crowd the box? Bring it on. You want
- 10:49Speaker 1: to play coverage? You want to drop more guys back?
- 10:52Speaker 1: We'll let Brown and Fletcher and those guys have a
- 10:55Speaker 1: field day. Running game wasn't bad by any means, but
- 10:59Speaker 1: I would imagine that's the thing that Mario wants cleaned
- 11:01Speaker 1: up the most from this game. The reports of the
- 11:04Speaker 1: demise of Miami's trenches, though, in this offseason were very
- 11:08Speaker 1: much exaggerated. And I thought both units were above average
- 11:12Speaker 1: tonight in totality. Certainly have things they can clean up
- 11:15Speaker 1: and fix. but I liked the way I saw the
- 11:16Speaker 1: trenches play. That was the question mark that everybody had
- 11:19Speaker 1: for this program going into the season. I know Stanford's
- 11:23Speaker 1: not a great team, but I thought they looked pretty
- 11:25Speaker 1: good tonight. Let's talk about the trap for a moment
- 11:28Speaker 1: because this was one. Ask any ACC program what happens
- 11:32Speaker 1: when you have to fly across the country. Ask your
- 11:34Speaker 1: own self how it felt two years ago when you
- 11:36Speaker 1: went out to Cal. Ask him how it feels to
- 11:39Speaker 1: kick off at six o'clock local time when your body
- 11:42Speaker 1: thinks it's nine. Ask him about a Friday night in
- 11:45Speaker 1: a week one against opponent who already has a game
- 11:49Speaker 1: under their belt. Stanford had already played and Miami hadn't.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Stanford had a first year head coach in Pritchard with
- 11:56Speaker 1: a real win already on his resume. They beat Hawaii
- 11:59Speaker 1: in week zero. Stanford had a stadium and a story
- 12:03Speaker 1: and a reason to believe, and Miami went out there
- 12:05Speaker 1: and led by 22 at halftime. There was no feeling
- 12:09Speaker 1: out period. There was no slow start. There was a
- 12:12Speaker 1: 48-yard completion on snap number one, and it never got
- 12:16Speaker 1: a whole lot closer than that. That matters more than
- 12:19Speaker 1: the final score does because this program has a documented
- 12:22Speaker 1: history with exactly this kind of game. Miami's last two
- 12:26Speaker 1: seasons both featured losses that had nothing to do with
- 12:28Speaker 1: talent and everything to do with focus. Louisville, SMU, games
- 12:33Speaker 1: where the Hurricanes were the better team and lost anyway.
- 12:36Speaker 1: And Friday night was the opposite of that. Miami is
- 12:39Speaker 1: now 11-0 in the month of September since 2023. Cristobal
- 12:44Speaker 1: said that this game had their attention since January, and
- 12:47Speaker 1: I think it showed. So here's where we land, and
- 12:51Speaker 1: I want to be careful with this because I think
- 12:52Speaker 1: a lot of Miami content this weekend is going to
- 12:54Speaker 1: skip this part. Miami beat a team that was picked
- 12:58Speaker 1: 17th out of 17th in its own conference, a team
- 13:01Speaker 1: playing without three starting offensive linemen, a team playing out
- 13:05Speaker 1: without its best edge rusher who had a sack and
- 13:08Speaker 1: a half the week before they were a team playing
- 13:11Speaker 1: without one of their best receivers. It's not a caveat.
- 13:16Speaker 1: I'm inventing to just be a killjoy. Those are facts
- 13:19Speaker 1: of the availability report. Miami was favored by more than
- 13:22Speaker 1: three touchdowns, and they won by 39. And this was
- 13:26Speaker 1: exactly what was supposed to happen. And there's a version
- 13:29Speaker 1: of this program's history where that is the trap itself,
- 13:34Speaker 1: where a huge number on a scoreboard in week one
- 13:36Speaker 1: becomes a story that people tell themselves in October when
- 13:39Speaker 1: the real games get here. Miami went 13-3 last season.
- 13:43Speaker 1: They played for a national championship. They lost to Indiana
- 13:46Speaker 1: by six points. Everything about this roster, the quarterback, the receiver,
- 13:50Speaker 1: the coaching staff, exists to close that six-point gap. There's
- 13:55Speaker 1: nothing you can do in Palo Alto in September to
- 13:57Speaker 1: close it. You close it in October. You close it
- 14:01Speaker 1: against Clemson and Florida State, and then you do it
- 14:03Speaker 1: again in November against Notre Dame when the temperature drops
- 14:07Speaker 1: and the game is ugly. There's also a real cost
- 14:10Speaker 1: from Friday that's going to get buried underneath the highlight reel.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Miami lost cornerback O.J. Frederique Jr. on the very first
- 14:16Speaker 1: drive of the season with what looked like a shoulder injury.
- 14:20Speaker 1: It's a starting corner in the secondary that already has
- 14:22Speaker 1: to figure out how to play behind a rebuilt front.
- 14:26Speaker 1: We'll be watching that very closely this week because the
- 14:28Speaker 1: availability report before Florida A & M is going to
- 14:31Speaker 1: tell you a lot more about Miami's ceiling than the
- 14:33Speaker 1: box score on Friday did. So what do we actually
- 14:36Speaker 1: know here in the early morning hours of Saturday, September 5th? Well,
- 14:41Speaker 1: we know that Darian Mensah is exactly what everybody hoped
- 14:44Speaker 1: he'd be. And he proved it on the road in
- 14:47Speaker 1: his very first start with a new roster and a
- 14:49Speaker 1: brand new playbook. We know that Malachi Toney is not
- 14:52Speaker 1: a one-year wonder and is now holding a record that
- 14:56Speaker 1: had gone untouched since Ronald Reagan's second term. And we
- 15:00Speaker 1: know the pass protection is real. The run game has
- 15:03Speaker 1: some work to do. We know the defensive front lost
- 15:06Speaker 1: two NFL players and they still only gave up six
- 15:08Speaker 1: points on the road. And we know that Miami went
- 15:11Speaker 1: across country into a trap-type game, coming off the most
- 15:15Speaker 1: painful loss in modern history of the program, and they
- 15:18Speaker 1: did not flinch for a single possession. We learned a
- 15:21Speaker 1: lot this week. But here's what we don't know. We
- 15:24Speaker 1: don't know what any of it means. Because the truth
- 15:27Speaker 1: about Week 1 is that it can only take things
- 15:30Speaker 1: away from you. It can't give you anything. Miami could
- 15:33Speaker 1: have lost their season Friday night. They couldn't have won it.
- 15:37Speaker 1: 45-6 is not a major accomplishment. It's just a receipt.
- 15:41Speaker 1: It proves that Miami showed up. It proves that the
- 15:44Speaker 1: pieces fit. It proves that the offseason wasn't a lie.
- 15:47Speaker 1: But nobody hangs a banner for a receipt. Tony's record
- 15:51Speaker 1: is going to be in the media guide for a
- 15:53Speaker 1: very long time. Mintz's 27-30 night might end up being
- 15:57Speaker 1: the best statistical debut in program history. And in 11 weeks,
- 16:01Speaker 1: none of that's going to matter one bit if this
- 16:03Speaker 1: team is standing on the field in Charlotte watching somebody
- 16:06Speaker 1: else celebrate. The Hurricanes didn't come back this season to
- 16:10Speaker 1: break records. They came back for the six points that
- 16:14Speaker 1: they left in the national championship game. Everything between now
- 16:19Speaker 1: and then is just a receipt. Let me know in
- 16:22Speaker 1: the comments what you thought about the game. Great performance
- 16:25Speaker 1: by Miami. It does not mean a thing toward what
- 16:28Speaker 1: they want to accomplish this year. I think that's how
- 16:31Speaker 1: Coach Cristobal will approach this win. You've got a lot
- 16:34Speaker 1: to be proud of, but you've got to do 11
- 16:36Speaker 1: more times, and then one more time, and then three
- 16:39Speaker 1: more times. Can Mensa and Tony both end up in
- 16:42Speaker 1: New York? Does one get left behind? Let me know
- 16:44Speaker 1: what you think down in the comments. Appreciate you guys
