- 1:39Speaker 3: O four point five to zone. Mister Stony Keeley, gentlemen,
- 1:44Speaker 3: It's love. Love is in the air. So, how how
- 1:47Speaker 3: are our Valentine's Day plans coming?
- 1:49Speaker 2: I am a secret Valentine's Day lover. I enjoy a
- 1:55Speaker 2: good date night with my wife. I'm looking forward to it.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Now that we've gotten older, we approached the holiday a
- 2:01Speaker 2: little bit more differently. We're big proponents of early dinner,
- 2:05Speaker 2: beat the crowds. We might not even celebrate Valentine's Day
- 2:09Speaker 2: on Valentine's Day, that's how That's how old we've gotten.
- 2:12Speaker 2: So I've I've come around to appreciate, have a new
- 2:16Speaker 2: appreciation for the holiday. Mainly, I'm just man, it has
- 2:19Speaker 2: been so cold, I'm ready for it to start warming
- 2:22Speaker 2: up at this point in the wintertime.
- 2:24Speaker 4: Oh yeah, I wish it was humid around February.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I would love it if it just felt like
- 2:31Speaker 2: late July. I don't know what that feels like. It's
- 2:36Speaker 2: been so long since I felt that.
- 2:38Speaker 4: I miss two weeks I miss I miss when you
- 2:41Speaker 4: would go outside to mow and didn't know if you'd
- 2:43Speaker 4: make it back in.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Yes, you had to tell your neighbors, Hey, if you
- 2:47Speaker 2: see me face down in the lawn, I'm not resting,
- 2:50Speaker 2: please call the ambulance.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Turn me over and turn the sprinkle or on. Uh. Well,
- 2:56Speaker 3: Valentine's is on a Saturday this year, coming up in
- 2:59Speaker 3: a couple weeks, so I will definitely definitely either be
- 3:03Speaker 3: going out on a Thursday or a Sunday.
- 3:06Speaker 4: I don't I'm the same. I don't know. My wife
- 3:09Speaker 4: and I aren't big Valentine's Day people. Actually, I think
- 3:12Speaker 4: we kind of just between the holidays and after New
- 3:15Speaker 4: Year's I just don't. We just don't care. But when
- 3:19Speaker 4: we used to we would go to eat. But yeah,
- 3:21Speaker 4: it would like I'm not even talking like day before,
- 3:23Speaker 4: day after. It might be like a weekend after. It
- 3:26Speaker 4: might be a week before. But since my son was born.
- 3:29Speaker 4: He was born in February. So that's that's February. Everything
- 3:35Speaker 4: Valentine's Day is is out.
- 3:36Speaker 2: That's the main event right now.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, you just you just high five each other
- 3:41Speaker 3: passing in the hallway.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Yep.
- 3:43Speaker 4: And then we just have and then we just say,
- 3:45Speaker 4: look what we did.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Yeah, let's don't do it again. Yeah, so it'd be
- 3:52Speaker 3: it'd be in February and Valentine's Uh, we had to
- 3:56Speaker 3: come up with some love on this week's this month's
- 3:58Speaker 3: episode and what more love can we give? Then with
- 4:01Speaker 3: puppies And this is all about the movie Must Love
- 4:05Speaker 3: Dogs from two thousand and five. Must Love Dogs is
- 4:08Speaker 3: about the recently divorced preschool teacher Sarah, who finds herself
- 4:11Speaker 3: looking for love again after her sister signs her up
- 4:14Speaker 3: for an online dating service, and then boat boat builder Jake,
- 4:19Speaker 3: who is also recently divorced, is set up by a
- 4:21Speaker 3: friend on the same site, and when the two meet,
- 4:23Speaker 3: the sparks don't quite fly at first. The film explores
- 4:27Speaker 3: how love can resurface when you least expect it, especially
- 4:31Speaker 3: if you love dogs.
- 4:33Speaker 4: Jake's a prick.
- 4:34Speaker 2: I don't know, I don't know why the sparks don't
- 4:38Speaker 2: fly right off the bat because John Cusack is the
- 4:41Speaker 2: most fuckable I've ever seen him in this movie.
- 4:43Speaker 4: Ain't Billy Crystal when here he met Sally fucking Well, I.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Said, he's the most fuckable I've seen hims now Well.
- 4:51Speaker 4: Also, besides say anything, I don't know when John Cusack
- 4:57Speaker 4: has looked fuckable, So I'm not sure. Maybe high fidelity.
- 5:03Speaker 3: High fidelity, definitely if you're a music fan, you fucking
- 5:05Speaker 3: mean use that.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Yeah, hot tub time machine.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Here's okay, well, here's this should.
- 5:12Speaker 4: Identity.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I have the new uh Mount Rushmore question most
- 5:18Speaker 3: fuckable John eck Roles.
- 5:21Speaker 4: Listen, that's gonna be worse than those Sandra Bullock movies
- 5:26Speaker 4: because I don't know if I've even seen that many,
- 5:28Speaker 4: and the ones I have aren't great.
- 5:30Speaker 3: The blasphemy anyway. H Must Love Dogs was directed by
- 5:35Speaker 3: Gary David Goldberg, whose only real other film credit was
- 5:40Speaker 3: nineteen eighty nine's Dad with Jack Lemon Ted Dancing and
- 5:43Speaker 3: the Young Ethan Hawk.
- 5:45Speaker 2: What a What a Moment in Times? Yeah, are the
- 5:48Speaker 2: only two film credits he has.
- 5:51Speaker 3: When it comes to major directorial stuff. Yeah, and Olympia
- 5:56Speaker 3: Ducaccus was in that film as well. I've seen it,
- 5:58Speaker 3: but it's been ages.
- 5:59Speaker 4: It's like, he doesn't make good movies.
- 6:02Speaker 2: You really must love dogs.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Huh, it's fine.
- 6:06Speaker 3: He's also dead now, so.
- 6:08Speaker 2: God definitely not making anymore. Uh.
- 6:13Speaker 3: The screenplay was written by Goldberg. H And it's based
- 6:16Speaker 3: on the novel of the same name by Claire Cook.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Oh.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Yeah, this is this is a book.
- 6:23Speaker 4: The book.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I would read this book. I'm actually I'm going
- 6:28Speaker 2: to add probably better.
- 6:29Speaker 4: It's probably better than what you.
- 6:31Speaker 2: That's kind of what I'm thinking. It's probably probably a
- 6:33Speaker 2: little more uh, probably a little more impactful romance.
- 6:37Speaker 4: In case you're wondering, Dad is rotten on Rotten Tomatoes.
- 6:41Speaker 2: It wrote the book, you said, Yes, Cook, I just
- 6:48Speaker 2: added it to my want to read list.
- 6:50Speaker 3: There you go read. Yeah, so you have the most
- 6:55Speaker 3: decorated actor in the history of drinking win John Cusack
- 7:02Speaker 3: as Jake.
- 7:03Speaker 2: We should give him an award, you know how like
- 7:06Speaker 2: some organizations like they'll band together the Independent Spirit or whatever.
- 7:11Speaker 4: Yeah, he show up here.
- 7:12Speaker 2: The drinking with Uh, we'll just call it the John
- 7:15Speaker 2: Cusack Award.
- 7:16Speaker 4: John Cusack, John Cusack, you got John Cusack.
- 7:20Speaker 3: I think from here on out we have this is
- 7:22Speaker 3: a good idea. When we do the year end review
- 7:25Speaker 3: we give out Cusack Awards from the Love that I
- 7:29Speaker 3: will nominate our our awards and then vote on.
- 7:33Speaker 2: It and the most John Cusack.
- 7:35Speaker 4: Yeah, and whatever something Passion of the Christ.
- 7:43Speaker 3: So John Cusacks of the film. Diane Lane stars as Sarah.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Elizabeth Perkins is her sister, Carol. Christopher Plumber who if
- 7:51Speaker 3: I close my eyes, I just hear. Morgan Freeman uh
- 7:54Speaker 3: plays the father, Bill Uh, Dermott, Maroney, was he Nick Steamy?
- 7:59Speaker 3: Was he one of the He was?
- 8:01Speaker 2: He was something you're thinking.
- 8:03Speaker 4: No, he's not.
- 8:04Speaker 3: He's not a mixed something.
- 8:06Speaker 4: No, you're thinking of Patrick Dempsey.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Patrick Dempsey, I thought, Eric, I get, I get.
- 8:14Speaker 4: Dylan McDermott and Dylan Dermott, Dylan what's his name Dermottmy no, yeah, Dermott,
- 8:22Speaker 4: Mroney and Dylan Dermott confused, Dylanot, Dylan McDermott yeah, and
- 8:31Speaker 4: Jack Limitt, Oh yeah.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Dylan Dermott plays plays Bob, another love interest for Sarah,
- 8:40Speaker 3: and then rounding out the cast a Starker Channing Uh
- 8:43Speaker 3: from the Great film Grease.
- 8:46Speaker 4: I haven't heard her name in Forever.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Dermott mulroney graduated from Northwestern.
- 8:52Speaker 4: Damn what's he doing? And Must Love Dogs.
- 8:56Speaker 3: Cashing a check?
- 8:57Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 8:58Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, uh so you know it's it's a nice
- 9:03Speaker 3: little ensemble cast. I think of some good players. Uh.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Diane Lane, I had a mad crush on her growing
- 9:09Speaker 3: up back in the eighties.
- 9:11Speaker 2: I I told Brandon after we both watched this. We
- 9:14Speaker 2: were kind of comparing notes, so to speak, and I
- 9:16Speaker 2: was like, Diane Lane and Must Love Dogs could have
- 9:19Speaker 2: had me doing anything.
- 9:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:21Speaker 4: I I really like her, Yeah, from I think in
- 9:27Speaker 4: a in a She's in a better movie called Under
- 9:29Speaker 4: the Tuscan Sun that I really like. But she's just
- 9:33Speaker 4: got this like glow about her. I mean, I liked
- 9:36Speaker 4: her in this movie. She's probably the only character I
- 9:39Speaker 4: actually really liked. But she's she's just she's very I
- 9:44Speaker 4: think she's underrated, and you know what, she's been in
- 9:46Speaker 4: the game a lot longer than people realize. Oh yeah,
- 9:50Speaker 4: has anyone seen Unfaithful?
- 9:52Speaker 2: I never have, Actually that steamy.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Movie with Richard gear and What's Your?
- 9:56Speaker 2: What's Your?
- 9:57Speaker 4: Oliver Martinez Olivia Martin? Maybe, but I took my mom
- 10:01Speaker 4: to see it from Mother's Day And how weird does
- 10:03Speaker 4: that Yeah.
- 10:04Speaker 2: You didn't. That one wasn't scouted too well in the advance.
- 10:07Speaker 3: No, well, I mean I first saw her and uh
- 10:11Speaker 3: The Outsiders, which is still one of my favorite movies
- 10:13Speaker 3: of all time.
- 10:14Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't. I don't know the first time I
- 10:17Speaker 4: saw her, I feel like she played I don't know.
- 10:21Speaker 4: It was in the nineties. Maybe, I don't know. I'll
- 10:24Speaker 4: look it up.
- 10:24Speaker 3: I'll see. You're definitely late to the game. But you're
- 10:26Speaker 3: also much younger as well.
- 10:28Speaker 4: So yeah, I'm twenty eighth.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Yeah. I mentioned a couple episodes back last year about
- 10:35Speaker 3: Indian Summer being one of my favorite summer films or
- 10:38Speaker 3: whatever the now restbark question she was in that She's
- 10:41Speaker 3: in Club Judge Dredd. So I loved her and Judge Dredd.
- 10:45Speaker 2: I didn't. I don't remember that.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Yeah, and then the uh Keanu Reeves classic Hardball. Can't
- 10:52Speaker 3: forget that.
- 10:53Speaker 4: Hey, that was a good one. I remember her in
- 10:56Speaker 4: Chaplain yep.
- 10:58Speaker 3: And then Under the Tuscan's Son, which came out like
- 11:01Speaker 3: two years prior to Must Love Dogs, kind of like
- 11:04Speaker 3: put her back on the uh on the Hollywood Map.
- 11:07Speaker 4: I guess, oh man, she was doing it The Outsiders
- 11:10Speaker 4: and she did Outsiders and Rumblefish in the same year.
- 11:13Speaker 3: Yeah, two great films.
- 11:15Speaker 4: But I will say, for me the first time, like
- 11:17Speaker 4: when I'm just looking at these, the ones that I
- 11:19Speaker 4: actually remember her in was Jack Oh yeah, yeah, And
- 11:25Speaker 4: then I caught up with Chaplain and all the other
- 11:27Speaker 4: stuff later.
- 11:29Speaker 3: I think Chaplain's very underrated film.
- 11:31Speaker 4: I didn't really like it that much. Okay, Robert Downey
- 11:35Speaker 4: Junior is great in it, but it's a very standard biopic.
- 11:40Speaker 4: It seemed to actually kind of shallow for everything that
- 11:42Speaker 4: feel like it could have gone into. Even though it
- 11:44Speaker 4: felt like it lasted forever. It needed a Tom Hanks
- 11:51Speaker 4: terminal hackcent or something something really get me going.
- 11:56Speaker 3: Or an Arnold Schwarzenegger collateral uh misdirection.
- 12:02Speaker 4: Yeah, well that's called collateral damage.
- 12:04Speaker 3: Yeah. Oh shit, I fucked it up again exactly.
- 12:06Speaker 4: Do not mix with Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx.
- 12:09Speaker 3: We've already got it once here.
- 12:12Speaker 4: Uh.
- 12:12Speaker 3: I think I think it's time for a drink. We
- 12:14Speaker 3: need to drink. And as we do every episode of
- 12:17Speaker 3: this drink, we curate a drink specifically with this movie
- 12:20Speaker 3: in mind. And this is just simply called Puppies Breath.
- 12:24Speaker 3: Oh yeah, it's two ounces of rye whiskey with an
- 12:29Speaker 3: ounce of sweet Vermuth. You're gonna need a little chocolate
- 12:32Speaker 3: bitters and then a teaspoon of cherry liqueur. If you
- 12:36Speaker 3: have some floating around, You're gonna combine all gredients into
- 12:39Speaker 3: a mixing glass with some ice, Stir until until well chilled,
- 12:43Speaker 3: and then strain into a rocks glass egg garnished with
- 12:46Speaker 3: a cherry.
- 12:48Speaker 2: There we go. A little puppies breath for Valentine?
- 12:51Speaker 4: Does it taste like puppies breath?
- 12:52Speaker 2: I don't know. Puppies breath is better than no breath,
- 12:55Speaker 2: as I always.
- 12:56Speaker 4: Say, that's true.
- 12:57Speaker 3: Yeah. Uh So money that's important here? Uh how many?
- 13:06Speaker 3: How many bouquets of roses and boxes of chocolates do
- 13:09Speaker 3: we think this movie costs to be made? M?
- 13:14Speaker 4: Fifteen million?
- 13:16Speaker 2: I'm going to say eleven million.
- 13:20Speaker 3: You could add both of yours up and you would
- 13:22Speaker 3: still be short. What this movie cost? Thirty million dollars?
- 13:28Speaker 4: Who robbed them? Who took that money?
- 13:31Speaker 2: Damn god?
- 13:32Speaker 4: That is who did they rob? I guess I should
- 13:35Speaker 4: ask if you didn't?
- 13:36Speaker 3: So if you, yeah, I don't know. But if you
- 13:38Speaker 3: joined us last month the kickoff the year, you know,
- 13:41Speaker 3: crash costs six and a half million dollars to be made, and.
- 13:44Speaker 4: Here we are sick thirty million dollars.
- 13:47Speaker 3: Nearly five times the amount. John Cusac was, you know,
- 13:51Speaker 3: raking it in. I guess at two thousand and five.
- 13:54Speaker 2: I mean, I guess, like why you bro pay your
- 13:58Speaker 2: your performers.
- 14:00Speaker 3: There's not enough dogs in this field? Yeah? Was this?
- 14:04Speaker 2: Was this just something like maybe it took forever to shoot,
- 14:07Speaker 2: so they ended up like doubling the time they needed
- 14:10Speaker 2: to work on it, or I mean, was it like
- 14:12Speaker 2: a heavily edited movie that I don't I don't get
- 14:16Speaker 2: this one.
- 14:17Speaker 3: Maybe Claire Cook, you know, held out for a high
- 14:21Speaker 3: rantom maybe rights to her book.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Yeah, because I remember, you know, this book being as
- 14:26Speaker 2: popular as like Harry Potter and stuff.
- 14:29Speaker 3: John Cusack is coming five minutes ago, you didn't know
- 14:31Speaker 3: it was a book.
- 14:34Speaker 4: John Cusack is coming off of Identity and Runaway Jury.
- 14:38Speaker 3: Oh that's twenty eight million right there.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Eight million?
- 14:41Speaker 4: And that was both in two thousand and three, and
- 14:43Speaker 4: then Must Love Dogs come on?
- 14:47Speaker 2: Yeah? I don't I was Diane Lane commanding a ton
- 14:52Speaker 2: of money back then?
- 14:53Speaker 4: I don't know. Maybe it was just a combo? Was
- 14:56Speaker 4: there cgi for John Cusacks here.
- 15:01Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know.
- 15:04Speaker 4: Wait a minute, can you do me a favor. Can
- 15:06Speaker 4: you look up to see how much Joan got because
- 15:09Speaker 4: she's his stunt double j I.
- 15:13Speaker 3: Don't think there were any stunts for John Cusack. He
- 15:16Speaker 3: rode the boat himself. Oh really, Oh he did his
- 15:19Speaker 3: own stunts yet nice. So uh. We got the budget
- 15:24Speaker 3: out of the way, which, even with me, that's a
- 15:25Speaker 3: head scratcher on how this movie costs that much money
- 15:29Speaker 3: even with inflation. But it was released July twenty ninth
- 15:33Speaker 3: of two thousand and five, and it was released on
- 15:35Speaker 3: twenty five hundred.
- 15:36Speaker 4: Screens, damn right in the middle of summer too.
- 15:39Speaker 3: Yep. And it opened opened alongside sky High and Stealth.
- 15:46Speaker 3: I don't remember Stealth.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Stell was that the the aircraft kind of comes to life.
- 15:52Speaker 2: It's like a an AI thing.
- 15:54Speaker 4: Yeah, it was an action Jamie Foxx met Martin Henderson. Guy,
- 15:59Speaker 4: I think is isn't it?
- 16:00Speaker 2: Yeah? I remember, like I think I'm pretty sure.
- 16:04Speaker 4: Yeah time, but it's sky High. That's the Kurt Russ Lucas.
- 16:08Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah, right, is that right, y Kurt Russell?
- 16:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I believe that's right. Movie.
- 16:14Speaker 4: I don't think it may thirty million. I'll tell you.
- 16:16Speaker 3: That, you and me both buddy on the open.
- 16:19Speaker 4: Weekend, at least I'm going to say. I'm going to
- 16:22Speaker 4: say eleven.
- 16:24Speaker 2: I was going to say eighteen. I was going to
- 16:25Speaker 2: be a little more generous, eighteen million.
- 16:28Speaker 3: We're already at the opening. I was trying to find
- 16:30Speaker 3: out what the top five was real quick. Oh sorry,
- 16:34Speaker 3: now you're good.
- 16:35Speaker 2: Uh Stealth was number one that week, sky high with
- 16:39Speaker 2: Disney could well that's true, Yeah, that's yeah. Maybe that
- 16:43Speaker 2: good old fashioned theatrical box office.
- 16:46Speaker 4: Race Barberheimer, what a big weekend July twenty ninth, two
- 16:50Speaker 4: thousand and five was.
- 16:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I remember Stealth getting like the full on marketing push,
- 16:56Speaker 2: and oh yeah, it was supposed to be a big release.
- 16:59Speaker 2: I'm curious. I was about to say, I don't think
- 17:03Speaker 2: it lived up to that, But.
- 17:05Speaker 3: All right do we? So what were our guesses? I
- 17:07Speaker 3: have the top five now, but what were our guesses
- 17:09Speaker 3: for opening weeks?
- 17:10Speaker 4: I kind of feel like I'm still maybe too high,
- 17:14Speaker 4: but I'm sticking with eleven million, and I.
- 17:16Speaker 3: Said eighteen eleven and eighteen Brandon's closer you went over.
- 17:21Speaker 3: We were looking at twelve point nine million opening weekend.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Okay, okay. By the way, Stealth has a popcorn meter
- 17:29Speaker 2: of thirty nine percent and a Tomato meter based on
- 17:32Speaker 2: one hundred and thirty eight reviews of thirteen percent.
- 17:35Speaker 3: Yeah, please do not look at Must Love Dogs.
- 17:39Speaker 2: I didn't. I didn't, So.
- 17:41Speaker 3: I have your top five, but just outside the top five,
- 17:44Speaker 3: I'll give you the top ten real quick. March of
- 17:46Speaker 3: Penguins at ten, hell yeah, yeah, War the Worlds at nine.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Still going.
- 17:53Speaker 3: You have Bad News Bears at eight. Yeah, the Island
- 17:57Speaker 3: at seven.
- 17:59Speaker 2: That was the Scarlet Hanson you and McGregor.
- 18:01Speaker 4: Michael Baying.
- 18:02Speaker 3: Yeah, it's not very good. And then h number six
- 18:07Speaker 3: outside the top five is Fantastic four.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Oh that was still good. Nice Ye what a summer.
- 18:13Speaker 3: And then your top five is Must Love Dogs just
- 18:17Speaker 3: beat out. It just was beat out by Stealth by
- 18:20Speaker 3: about five hundred thousand dollars four. Yeah it was a
- 18:24Speaker 3: sky Yeah. Sky High is at number three with little
- 18:28Speaker 3: over fourteen and a half million dollars.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Dang.
- 18:31Speaker 3: Your number one film, Number two film Excuse Me is
- 18:34Speaker 3: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Yeah, and then number one
- 18:39Speaker 3: Wedding Crashers.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Sick good for wedding.
- 18:43Speaker 4: Rated R movie. Yeah, I would say number three, four
- 18:47Speaker 4: and five wouldn't even be in theaters these days.
- 18:51Speaker 3: Oh no, probably not, maybe streaming. Maybe sky High Will Sky.
- 18:56Speaker 4: High Stealth and Must Love Dogs they be streaming.
- 18:59Speaker 2: I think you're probably right.
- 19:00Speaker 3: I think Must Love Dogs screams Apple Plus.
- 19:04Speaker 4: I was thinking Paramount Plus.
- 19:08Speaker 2: I was thinking Lifetime.
- 19:09Speaker 4: Oh, well, that's probably where it's not.
- 19:12Speaker 2: That's not a bad thing.
- 19:13Speaker 4: I'm not being dispeared, but that's the quality.
- 19:16Speaker 3: Then you would have like, uh, what's the girl from
- 19:19Speaker 3: a Party of Five? That and mean girls that does
- 19:21Speaker 3: all the Lifetime?
- 19:24Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, she'd played Dane Lane's character.
- 19:28Speaker 2: Yeah, but John Cusack.
- 19:30Speaker 4: He's in it, John, Yeah, he's in it.
- 19:33Speaker 3: At this point, that would be the Bill Belichick movie,
- 19:36Speaker 3: but it'd.
- 19:36Speaker 4: Be the it'd be the John Cusack with doc from
- 19:40Speaker 4: Back to the Future here.
- 19:43Speaker 3: Uh So at the box office domestically, in total, it
- 19:47Speaker 3: made just under forty four million dollars sixteen profit it's profit,
- 19:53Speaker 3: and worldwide a little over fifty eight million dollars.
- 19:56Speaker 2: There you go, Okay, souching, it made its money back
- 20:00Speaker 2: and then so.
- 20:01Speaker 3: Your big winners internationally are Germany and Australia. They both
- 20:05Speaker 3: brought in over two million dollars. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear
- 20:09Speaker 3: Bulgaria ever screened Must Love Dogs.
- 20:12Speaker 4: God, you gotta be top three to No Wonder, No
- 20:15Speaker 4: Wonder Top.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Yeah, that's fair, but Finland really hated dogs because it
- 20:22Speaker 3: only brought in eighty nine hundred dollars. Ouch.
- 20:25Speaker 4: Bulgaria was sucking on Charlie's chocolate if you get what
- 20:27Speaker 4: us Yeah, waiting crash. Bulgaria doesn't care about that.
- 20:32Speaker 2: They don't get that sense right.
- 20:35Speaker 3: But you mentioned, uh, what was it Stealth's rotten tomato scores. Yeah,
- 20:42Speaker 3: the Tomato Meter with one hundred and forty nine reviews
- 20:45Speaker 3: for Must Love Dogs, where are we thinking the critics landed.
- 20:50Speaker 2: I'm going to say, gotta be rotten. I'm going to
- 20:54Speaker 2: say fifty four.
- 20:56Speaker 4: Oh no, no, no, no, I bet you it's because
- 21:03Speaker 4: he's talking about Stealth. I feel like it might be
- 21:05Speaker 4: lower than that. I'm going to say twenty eight.
- 21:10Speaker 3: You're kind of in the middle thirty nine percent in
- 21:14Speaker 3: case where it landed not fresh at all.
- 21:18Speaker 2: I'm surprised by that.
- 21:20Speaker 3: But with over one hundred thousand reviews by the average
- 21:25Speaker 3: day Joe, the Popcorn Meter for Must Love Dogs what
- 21:31Speaker 3: do we think this is landing at fifty four percent,
- 21:37Speaker 3: I'll say sixty one. Brandon, you're very polite. That's the
- 21:43Speaker 3: most kind thing you've ever said about a drop.
- 21:46Speaker 4: I was actually that was me really thinking about the audience.
- 21:51Speaker 3: The audience comes in at a dead in the middle
- 21:54Speaker 3: fifty percent.
- 21:56Speaker 2: I'm I'm surprised by that because this I don't just
- 21:59Speaker 2: don't think gets that offensive.
- 22:01Speaker 4: I don't you know why I thought it'd be higher?
- 22:04Speaker 4: Is I feel like in the sort of the reason why,
- 22:06Speaker 4: like I'm giving a ship, But it is like, I think,
- 22:09Speaker 4: when you see a movie like that, you should know
- 22:11Speaker 4: what you're like, you should know what movie this is. Yeah,
- 22:14Speaker 4: So I'm shocked at people like, I don't know how
- 22:16Speaker 4: you could be disappointed, And I get like.
- 22:20Speaker 2: I read a little bit of Variety's review and the
- 22:22Speaker 2: first line of it is like, in order to enjoy
- 22:26Speaker 2: must love dogs, you have to love John Cusack.
- 22:30Speaker 4: Right, And that's my first problem.
- 22:32Speaker 2: I'm like, you many like you should know what you're
- 22:37Speaker 2: getting into for this, and it's it's hard to imagine
- 22:41Speaker 2: your expectations being so inflated that you're disappointed in it.
- 22:45Speaker 4: I think the only reason you should be pissed is
- 22:47Speaker 4: let's say you've already seen this and then a podcast
- 22:50Speaker 4: makes you watch it again. You know, the variety. I
- 22:56Speaker 4: don't agree with variety because I think I feel like
- 22:59Speaker 4: this is Diane lane movie more than anybody's thank You,
- 23:03Speaker 4: and I feel like if it wasn't for her, I
- 23:07Speaker 4: probably really wouldn't like it. But there is some kind
- 23:09Speaker 4: of thing with her character.
- 23:12Speaker 2: But like maybe that's where the disappointment is is that
- 23:15Speaker 2: it's actually Diane Lane's movie and you're thinking about like
- 23:19Speaker 2: Under the Tuscan Sun, Unfaithful, these other movies that you
- 23:23Speaker 2: guys have mentioned, and then you watch this and it's not.
- 23:27Speaker 4: Which I don't I don't know some of those done
- 23:29Speaker 4: before this.
- 23:30Speaker 3: Yeah they were, they were uh pretty much all done
- 23:33Speaker 3: before this.
- 23:34Speaker 4: But I my I think my big thing is is like, yes,
- 23:38Speaker 4: it's predictable. Yes, I felt like there was a lot
- 23:40Speaker 4: of cheesiness and stuff. I just really didn't like many
- 23:44Speaker 4: of the characters, Like I didn't like John Cusack and
- 23:48Speaker 4: his kind of just I don't know, like from the
- 23:52Speaker 4: moment they meet, From the moment they meet, it's not
- 23:55Speaker 4: this like opposites attract kind of thing to me. The
- 23:59Speaker 4: guy that's his buddy is I didn't. It just seemed
- 24:05Speaker 4: very clichy and I don't know.
- 24:09Speaker 3: Ago.
- 24:10Speaker 4: Yeah, but like.
- 24:11Speaker 3: He it had been better with Jack Black in that role.
- 24:14Speaker 4: Yeah, I guess the thing is like it's not even
- 24:16Speaker 4: like funny when I think they want it to be funny.
- 24:18Speaker 4: And then Dermott Maroney, he, I mean, I get you
- 24:23Speaker 4: have to have some kind of thing in there, but
- 24:25Speaker 4: I don't know. I hear that that Love Affair didn't
- 24:28Speaker 4: really do it for me either. Maybe it's because like
- 24:33Speaker 4: he's like, I just felt like you already know that
- 24:38Speaker 4: something is up. Like I get you can fall for
- 24:40Speaker 4: a guy like that, Yeah, understand, But even the way
- 24:43Speaker 4: that it goes and the way she decides to go
- 24:45Speaker 4: back to him, and then all of a sudden there
- 24:47Speaker 4: is like, oh, you know what I do miss Jake
- 24:50Speaker 4: and stuff, it's just so like ugh. But but let
- 24:55Speaker 4: me tell you guys something, I don't think I just
- 24:57Speaker 4: hate Love and rom Comms because there's another movie that
- 25:01Speaker 4: Dermott Maroney is in that I let me tell you
- 25:03Speaker 4: it is not a good movie, but it is one
- 25:05Speaker 4: that I can put on, especially during this time, and
- 25:09Speaker 4: there's some kind of what do they call it? You
- 25:15Speaker 4: know it's not you know it's not good, but you
- 25:17Speaker 4: enjoy it anyway. Yeah, guilty pleasure is the wedding Date
- 25:22Speaker 4: with him and Debora Messing. Anybody's seen that one?
- 25:25Speaker 2: Nope?
- 25:26Speaker 3: No, I know what it is and it exists. But
- 25:29Speaker 3: now that's when I've I've passed on.
- 25:32Speaker 4: Dermott Maroney will always be in my heart for being
- 25:35Speaker 4: in about Schmidt who has a sick ponytail.
- 25:39Speaker 3: So since I haven't seen the wedding Date, does he
- 25:42Speaker 3: get the girl in the end?
- 25:43Speaker 4: Yeah, he's actually a male prostitute basically, and she hires
- 25:49Speaker 4: him because.
- 25:51Speaker 3: I think McConaughey wasn't available for this film at the time.
- 25:54Speaker 4: No, look the budget up for Wedding Date. No, they
- 25:59Speaker 4: can'tnot Ward Matthew McConnell.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Did you not hear him say?
- 26:02Speaker 4: Dermott mulroney and Deborah Mess they were the stars.
- 26:06Speaker 3: That's that's the grace of willing grace. She was a
- 26:09Speaker 3: big deal in two thousand and whatever year that movie
- 26:12Speaker 3: came out.
- 26:14Speaker 4: But Dermott Maroney was also in My best Friend's Wedding
- 26:17Speaker 4: with Cameron Diaz and Julia Roberts.
- 26:19Speaker 3: Does he get the girl there? Because it seems like
- 26:21Speaker 3: everything I see him in. He doesn't get the girl.
- 26:23Speaker 4: I haven't well he gets her in he gets her
- 26:25Speaker 4: in wedding Date. I'll tell you that he was.
- 26:27Speaker 3: He didn't get her a new girl.
- 26:29Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, he's been in like the New Scream, the
- 26:32Speaker 4: New Scream.
- 26:33Speaker 3: Movie, no spoilers, but he's not he's not a good
- 26:36Speaker 3: person Scream.
- 26:37Speaker 4: And he was just in something else. He's in one
- 26:40Speaker 4: of the Well, he was in Gymstones.
- 26:42Speaker 3: He was in two horror films where he was part
- 26:46Speaker 3: of the kill. Yeah. Yeah, forget what the other one was,
- 26:49Speaker 3: but they were right. They were like back to back
- 26:51Speaker 3: basic Thanks No, it wasn't Thanksgiving.
- 26:53Speaker 4: Is he in that one?
- 26:54Speaker 2: I don't think he was in Thanksgiving? Was Patrick Dempsey? Right?
- 27:00Speaker 4: That's mix Steemy In case anybody's keeping.
- 27:03Speaker 2: Up, Okay, okay, glad.
- 27:06Speaker 4: Anyway, I just wanted to say it's not that I
- 27:09Speaker 4: hate it. I just feel like, even within the within
- 27:14Speaker 4: the the world of this kind of genre where yes,
- 27:17Speaker 4: what you see is what you get, I just felt
- 27:20Speaker 4: like it could have been a little more interesting. There
- 27:22Speaker 4: could have been more chemistry, it could have been actually funny,
- 27:25Speaker 4: and I didn't get I didn't get any of that,
- 27:28Speaker 4: and then like the way they the way that they
- 27:30Speaker 4: end up getting together, and then like that stupid cookout.
- 27:34Speaker 4: Uh can I say? And I told Stony this, I
- 27:38Speaker 4: was probably shocked the most to see Christopher Plummer in this,
- 27:41Speaker 4: and I just thought, what what is he doing here?
- 27:44Speaker 4: And then for me, that conversation between Diane Lane and
- 27:50Speaker 4: him about how he's already had the love of his
- 27:53Speaker 4: life and he's just kind of tapped dancing through. I
- 27:55Speaker 4: just thought, you know what, that's.
- 27:58Speaker 2: I love that scene where he met John Cusack's character
- 28:02Speaker 2: and they had the conversation about.
- 28:03Speaker 4: With the boat.
- 28:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought that was There were times where I
- 28:07Speaker 2: felt like this was a pretty poetic script, and that
- 28:11Speaker 2: was one of those moments where I was like, oh,
- 28:12Speaker 2: this is this is good shit right here.
- 28:15Speaker 4: I thought it was cute. But then like he goes
- 28:17Speaker 4: back and says that, and then like she catches it
- 28:19Speaker 4: and he's like, yeah, I met this young man he
- 28:21Speaker 4: builds boats, and I'm just like, just just go be
- 28:25Speaker 4: with that muppet and let's let's end this thing. So anyway,
- 28:29Speaker 4: but the dogs are really cute.
- 28:31Speaker 3: Yeah, for the like four minutes they're in the entire film. Correct, Yeah, correct,
- 28:37Speaker 3: I feel must love dogs walked, so because I said
- 28:41Speaker 3: so could run because they're essentially the same film to me,
- 28:45Speaker 3: but because I said so is much much better.
- 28:48Speaker 2: I don't either.
- 28:49Speaker 4: That's the Diane Keaton one.
- 28:50Speaker 3: Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore where she she is. Mandy
- 28:55Speaker 3: Moore's character is set up through online dating by a
- 28:58Speaker 3: family member, this being her mother, they're not her sister,
- 29:01Speaker 3: and then there's two guys that she has to fight,
- 29:05Speaker 3: fight over and decide which one she loves or wants
- 29:08Speaker 3: to be with.
- 29:09Speaker 4: I remember seeing that. I don't think I really liked
- 29:11Speaker 4: that one either.
- 29:11Speaker 2: I don't think I ever saw that one.
- 29:13Speaker 4: I like the Family Stone with Diane Keaton and Rachel mcaddey.
- 29:15Speaker 2: I haven't watched that in a while.
- 29:17Speaker 3: That would like everything with Diane Keaton.
- 29:20Speaker 2: That too.
- 29:21Speaker 4: Did you like that one she was in with Kathy
- 29:23Speaker 4: Bates where they go to that summer camp.
- 29:25Speaker 2: Mm hmm huh.
- 29:27Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a real dyane.
- 29:29Speaker 3: I didn't say i'd seen everything.
- 29:31Speaker 4: You said you loved everything she was in. I'm telling
- 29:33Speaker 4: you she's in a drumb camp movie.
- 29:35Speaker 3: Did you see it? And I'm sure if I loved
- 29:38Speaker 3: the one that came out like last year the year
- 29:39Speaker 3: before fairly recently. I know what you're talking about. I
- 29:41Speaker 3: haven't seen it.
- 29:42Speaker 4: And with that one where it's Freaky Friday, but it's
- 29:45Speaker 4: like they switch bodies or something. With that lady that
- 29:47Speaker 4: was in Barry, that was stupid and good. Written's Diane Keaton.
- 29:53Speaker 4: She's still here. You're still with us, all right.
- 29:55Speaker 3: I'm loving your letterbox reviews here on the podcast.
- 29:59Speaker 4: I love of her. And something's got to give?
- 30:02Speaker 3: Okay, Well, you just love that wicked fat ass of
- 30:08Speaker 3: Jack Nicholson.
- 30:09Speaker 4: Jack cuts that turtleneck off bine. You know what I mean.
- 30:14Speaker 2: I swear I heard cuts that turd turtleck.
- 30:19Speaker 4: Did?
- 30:20Speaker 2: I just like I don't remember Jack taking you.
- 30:23Speaker 4: Don't remember him cutting up done Keaton ship. And something's
- 30:26Speaker 4: got to give? Well with his you should have the blu.
- 30:31Speaker 3: Ray No, you need, you need the four K for
- 30:35Speaker 3: that one.
- 30:36Speaker 4: Jack, I just remember it was green.
- 30:39Speaker 2: Oh god, this is all right.
- 30:43Speaker 3: Let's let's let's move on to letterbox reviews. Please, I've
- 30:47Speaker 3: got I've got a few here for us. First off,
- 30:50Speaker 3: Bryce two and a half stars. He eloquently puts this,
- 30:54Speaker 3: to be honest, in this movie where without John Cusack,
- 30:58Speaker 3: I probably wouldn't have liked it.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Hmm, how about that. Yeah, Brandon's busy right now.
- 31:05Speaker 3: Sorry, good, let me get my positive John Cusack out
- 31:09Speaker 3: of the way.
- 31:10Speaker 4: Then I'll leave it where it lies.
- 31:13Speaker 3: And then NIV NIV gives it four and a half
- 31:16Speaker 3: stars cool and simply says, I want to date two
- 31:20Speaker 3: thousand and five John Cusack so bad.
- 31:22Speaker 2: I'm telling you, Man, I loved him. It was. It was.
- 31:26Speaker 2: There was a gravitational pool with him because he was
- 31:30Speaker 2: clearly an intelligent guy, clearly witty, eloquent, and I just man,
- 31:37Speaker 2: as soon as he was on one about the boats
- 31:40Speaker 2: and people not appreciating the craft the woodwork anymore, I
- 31:44Speaker 2: was like, Man, I sucked his dude's dick. Exactly what
- 31:49Speaker 2: I was thinking. I did type in my notes, Uh
- 31:52Speaker 2: the most. I was trying to type the most fuckable
- 31:55Speaker 2: John Cusack, and it auto corrected it to suckable and
- 31:59Speaker 2: the same.
- 31:59Speaker 3: Thing, Yeah, the same thing, same energy. Uh.
- 32:03Speaker 2: Yeah. I thought he was great. I thought he had
- 32:05Speaker 2: charisma in this one, which is atypical of his performances
- 32:09Speaker 2: that I've seen so far.
- 32:11Speaker 3: He had it once, Yeah, it several times, but that's
- 32:14Speaker 3: a whole I mean.
- 32:15Speaker 4: Like once upon a time, not like only in one movie,
- 32:18Speaker 4: but I think it's dried up by the time we
- 32:21Speaker 4: get two. Uh of us love Dogs. I just watched
- 32:25Speaker 4: a man pull a beard here out of his nose.
- 32:27Speaker 4: It's apparently it got stuck.
- 32:29Speaker 2: I've got some some something going on with my mustache.
- 32:33Speaker 4: But yeah, I would say in his earlier in his
- 32:36Speaker 4: earlier days, gross point blank.
- 32:39Speaker 3: High fidelity say anything.
- 32:41Speaker 4: Say anything, stuff like that, But yeah, not in two
- 32:44Speaker 4: thousand and nine.
- 32:45Speaker 2: High Fidelity is the only one of those movies that
- 32:47Speaker 2: I've seen. So what I'm what I'm thinking is I'm
- 32:50Speaker 2: I better get the box tissues out and go back
- 32:52Speaker 2: and watch.
- 32:53Speaker 4: Yeah, so you need to Yeah, just start there, the
- 32:56Speaker 4: tissue and the lotion. When when when John Cusack was cool?
- 33:02Speaker 2: I but I uh, I I liked I think he
- 33:06Speaker 2: added to this to this movie, and I think it
- 33:08Speaker 2: was it was a weird dynamic between him and Diane Lane,
- 33:14Speaker 2: and I think that I kind of liked that. I
- 33:16Speaker 2: kind of fucked with it.
- 33:17Speaker 4: See you know what, I didn't mind that because it
- 33:20Speaker 4: did feel a little different than just like but then
- 33:22Speaker 4: it's it's almost like it's it's it just falls back
- 33:25Speaker 4: into that kind of the the tropes of just like
- 33:29Speaker 4: here's the dream guy, and he's not actually the dream guy.
- 33:32Speaker 4: And then this guy that's like I'll never see this
- 33:34Speaker 4: prick again ends up being the nice one. So it's
- 33:36Speaker 4: kind of like, if you know where it's going, it's
- 33:39Speaker 4: got like it's for me. It's gotta be like enjoyable
- 33:43Speaker 4: through that process, and I found Diane Lane to kind
- 33:47Speaker 4: of be that for me. And like I said, a
- 33:50Speaker 4: scene or two with Christopher Plumber, I didn't like Elizabeth
- 33:53Speaker 4: Perkins character. I didn't think she added much to it.
- 33:56Speaker 4: It just seemed like everybody said the same stuff over
- 33:58Speaker 4: and over.
- 33:59Speaker 3: So yeah, and then I believe I found uh Brandon's
- 34:09Speaker 3: letterbox doppelganger here Chade and Bobie.
- 34:14Speaker 4: That sounds like it.
- 34:16Speaker 3: Booby's yeah, gives must Love Dogs two and a half
- 34:20Speaker 3: stars and says, just imagine choosing John Cusack over Dermot mulroney,
- 34:27Speaker 3: I like, he says, I like Cusack looks like a sad,
- 34:31Speaker 3: swollen muppet, and Mrony is just so damn fine. I
- 34:40Speaker 3: can't comprehend.
- 34:42Speaker 4: Here's the thing, here's the problem, swollen muppet is all.
- 34:46Speaker 4: Here's the thing, though. I but within the confines of
- 34:52Speaker 4: this movie, Dermott Moroney is a bastard, like he knows
- 34:58Speaker 4: he looks good and he knows that he can get
- 35:00Speaker 4: away with it. So why would someone like Diane Lane's
- 35:03Speaker 4: character want to be with him? If I was Diane Lane,
- 35:07Speaker 4: I would I wouldn't date any either one of those.
- 35:10Speaker 4: I date my dad, Christopher Plummer.
- 35:13Speaker 2: That yellow rose because I was about to.
- 35:17Speaker 4: I date Christopher Plumber. Yeah, she had she had the
- 35:19Speaker 4: right manner whole life.
- 35:21Speaker 2: That's what they should have. They should have swamped roles.
- 35:24Speaker 2: Christopher Plumber plays John Cusack.
- 35:26Speaker 4: Yes, John Cusack plays Yeah, I would believe it.
- 35:30Speaker 2: And Joan Cusack plays Dermott Malroney or just.
- 35:33Speaker 4: Keep it the same and say must love incest.
- 35:36Speaker 2: There's your there's your cold.
- 35:40Speaker 3: Yep uh. Lastly, for Letterbox is sam Bam seventy two.
- 35:46Speaker 3: Sam Bam seventy two gives it four stars. I can't
- 35:49Speaker 3: say anything bad about this movie. It's a bit of
- 35:52Speaker 3: an everything goes wrong plot, which I hate. But John
- 35:55Speaker 3: Cusack is so fucking endearing it doesn't matter.
- 35:59Speaker 4: You you got to have John Custon says, yeah, flight
- 36:03Speaker 4: fandom like people people said.
- 36:05Speaker 2: We've just said, like this is really Diane Lane's movie.
- 36:08Speaker 2: But for some reviews.
- 36:11Speaker 4: Yeah, John, everybody got up after that movie because of
- 36:14Speaker 4: John Cusack soaked their couch cushions. You get it. I
- 36:18Speaker 4: don't get.
- 36:18Speaker 3: How long it took me to make up like twenty
- 36:21Speaker 3: five different email addresses so I could have twenty five
- 36:24Speaker 3: different Ladderbox memberships to write all these.
- 36:28Speaker 4: I hope John appreciates it.
- 36:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm waiting for that follow on Twitter, John, if
- 36:33Speaker 3: you're listening, hit that, hit that follow.
- 36:36Speaker 4: There you go, Come on, John, Come on John, you
- 36:39Speaker 4: can get Joan in there too.
- 36:42Speaker 3: This is an award nominated film, believe it or not. No,
- 36:48Speaker 3: it was nominated for a Golden Trailer Award for both
- 36:51Speaker 3: Best Romance Trailer Get the Fuck Out of Here, but
- 36:56Speaker 3: sadly it lost to Pride and Prejudice.
- 36:59Speaker 4: My god, it lost that award. Yeah, Pride and Prejudice
- 37:03Speaker 4: is a very romantic trip. I'm assuming that's Kieren Knightley, right.
- 37:08Speaker 3: Yes, the Kiera Kniley version. It's a little fun facts.
- 37:12Speaker 3: This is the final theatrical movie written, produced, and directed
- 37:15Speaker 3: by Gary David Goldberg, his second one. Yeah, because we
- 37:21Speaker 3: lost him some time later, yeah, wow, and then and then,
- 37:27Speaker 3: according to Goldberg, he gave the script to John Cusack
- 37:31Speaker 3: and encouraged him to change any of his characters dialogue
- 37:34Speaker 3: to better suit him. It was a bit surprised by
- 37:38Speaker 3: Cusack's response, who later sent him about thirty five pages
- 37:42Speaker 3: of new dialogue. Dang, if a man didn't get a
- 37:46Speaker 3: writing credit.
- 37:48Speaker 2: Yeah, that was that should qualify for a writing credit,
- 37:50Speaker 2: I would think.
- 37:52Speaker 3: One would think.
- 37:54Speaker 4: So, I'd love to know what that dialogue was before. Yeah,
- 37:58Speaker 4: that's where I met. That's why I'm one wondering why.
- 38:01Speaker 4: I think this is how a guy goes from doing
- 38:03Speaker 4: a movie in the eighties to then his next movie
- 38:05Speaker 4: band in two thousand and five. Hey, John, can you
- 38:09Speaker 4: look at this and just can you rewrite it? Send
- 38:12Speaker 4: it back to me?
- 38:15Speaker 3: Well, I mean, in his defense, Gary David did a
- 38:18Speaker 3: ton of television, Like he wrote practically every episode of
- 38:23Speaker 3: Family Ties, which was like one hundred and seventy two
- 38:28Speaker 3: somewhad episodes. Plus I think he wrote for mash Even
- 38:34Speaker 3: and was the TV show Day by Day which had
- 38:38Speaker 3: a young Julia Lewis Dreyfus on it. That was an
- 38:40Speaker 3: underrated show. I loved that show from the was that
- 38:43Speaker 3: late eighties. So yeah, he had a ton of television credits.
- 38:47Speaker 3: Just not you know some stuff.
- 38:48Speaker 2: He's not the nobody that were basically, well.
- 38:52Speaker 4: I mean I think we all know that if you
- 38:56Speaker 4: can't make it in film, you're a nobody, is that right? Yeah,
- 39:02Speaker 4: David Higgins Clark is a nobody to me.
- 39:05Speaker 3: He wrote one hundred and forty five episodes of Spin City.
- 39:10Speaker 3: The creator for the show never heard of it. So yeah,
- 39:12Speaker 3: Michael J.
- 39:13Speaker 2: Fox firmly, he's being facetious, firmly, firmly entrenched in the
- 39:19Speaker 2: television world.
- 39:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:21Speaker 4: Well, he started with mash so he was like eighteen.
- 39:26Speaker 3: Well, I don't know how old he was when he passed.
- 39:28Speaker 4: Sadly, okay day he died right after the box office.
- 39:36Speaker 2: Just stop.
- 39:37Speaker 3: He passed seven years later. He was born in nineteen
- 39:40Speaker 3: forty four and passed in twenty thirteen.
- 39:42Speaker 4: My notes are wrong, could.
- 39:44Speaker 2: Could not, could not help, Like you have notes.
- 39:47Speaker 4: Lost to stealth, goodbye.
- 39:51Speaker 3: And pride prejudice. I'm out, well at.
- 39:54Speaker 4: Least you, I mean you, Mike could hang your hat
- 39:55Speaker 4: on that one stealth and skyhigh. You.
- 40:00Speaker 3: So the dog mother Teresa, which is the one dog
- 40:04Speaker 3: that's prominent in the film and seen in the poster,
- 40:07Speaker 3: was played by two dogs. Six month old Newfounlon puppies
- 40:12Speaker 3: and both of Yeah, and we see them.
- 40:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I thought I thought a human was in there.
- 40:20Speaker 3: Oh yeah, both of them. Speaking of dogs, my dog
- 40:27Speaker 3: has risen from the dead on the couch here.
- 40:34Speaker 4: I actually asked that question the way my son asked
- 40:37Speaker 4: me questions.
- 40:41Speaker 3: Go ahead, go ahead anyway. Both of the two dogs
- 40:44Speaker 3: appear at the end of the movie together in the credits,
- 40:47Speaker 3: and David Gary David Goldberg, the director, adopted both puppies
- 40:51Speaker 3: at the end of the filming.
- 40:53Speaker 4: Then died after So who took the dogs? Who took
- 40:59Speaker 4: the dogs?
- 41:00Speaker 2: They found?
- 41:01Speaker 3: Yeah, the two dogs were trained by animal trainer and
- 41:06Speaker 3: wrangler Boone A Bar. If that's not a Hollywood name,
- 41:10Speaker 3: I don't know what the fuck is Boone Bars.
- 41:12Speaker 2: Isn't that Brad Pitt's name, character's name, and once upon
- 41:15Speaker 2: a time.
- 41:17Speaker 3: So it could be for all I Knowugh, but Boone's
- 41:21Speaker 3: animals for Hollywood featured animals and TV shows including CSI,
- 41:26Speaker 3: Ugly Betty, and Criminal Minds, as well as for commercials
- 41:30Speaker 3: for brands like Budweiser, Disneyland, and McDonald's.
- 41:33Speaker 2: Every damn everything about everybody involved in this movie. Being
- 41:39Speaker 2: so linked to television probably tells you this movie should
- 41:43Speaker 2: have just been on television.
- 41:46Speaker 4: Probably, you know how sometimes HBO just releases their own movie.
- 41:49Speaker 4: Were you watching on a Saturday night?
- 41:51Speaker 2: I mean, I listen. I like the movie, but it's
- 41:55Speaker 2: just I'm like starting to see why.
- 41:57Speaker 4: From them writer direct to the dogs. Everybody really blogs
- 42:02Speaker 4: on TV.
- 42:02Speaker 2: Yeah this, yeah, but they got John Cusack and Diane Lane.
- 42:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 42:07Speaker 2: Yeah, they had to roll with it. Oh my god.
- 42:10Speaker 4: Oh I did not think this would be as much
- 42:13Speaker 4: fun as it is. But honestly, the breakthrough was knowing
- 42:17Speaker 4: that director died. We've been riding high ever since.
- 42:23Speaker 3: The Trainer Boon Bar. His first feature was Training and
- 42:29Speaker 3: Handling the Orangutane Clyde and Clint Eastwood's any which way
- 42:33Speaker 3: you can, Yes, damn yes, legend Stony. I doubt you've
- 42:38Speaker 3: seen that movie, but that movie is so much fun
- 42:41Speaker 3: to watch.
- 42:42Speaker 4: I want fun to watch.
- 42:44Speaker 3: It's fun movie. It's not the best clean eastwood Field,
- 42:47Speaker 3: but there's a sequel to it too, so have at that,
- 42:51Speaker 3: all right? And that? Uh. The Newfoundland Puppy or dog
- 42:57Speaker 3: is the company mascot for Gary David Goldberg production company
- 43:01Speaker 3: called UBU, which if you watch certain TV shows at
- 43:04Speaker 3: the end when they go to the credits, you always sit, sit,
- 43:08Speaker 3: good dog. That's where that came from.
- 43:09Speaker 2: How about that?
- 43:10Speaker 4: Oh I've never heard of that.
- 43:12Speaker 3: Yeah, you never ever heard that.
- 43:15Speaker 4: I don't think.
- 43:16Speaker 3: So man watch some Man for real for real?
- 43:21Speaker 4: I guess.
- 43:21Speaker 3: So let me go back and so I watch all
- 43:25Speaker 3: the credits for Family Tizers, Spin City.
- 43:29Speaker 4: For God, let me go to Spin City.
- 43:31Speaker 2: Didn't you play After America's Funny Videos?
- 43:35Speaker 3: Possibly? I don't know.
- 43:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:37Speaker 3: Uh. When Sarah dian Lane's character and Bob Dermot Maroney's
- 43:42Speaker 3: characters bump into each other at the dog park, there's
- 43:44Speaker 3: a table set up with an animal rescue group called
- 43:47Speaker 3: Animal Avengers. This is actually a real rescue group founded
- 43:51Speaker 3: by actress Shannon Elizabeth from The American Again.
- 43:56Speaker 2: Yeah, that's she could have been in a movie.
- 44:00Speaker 3: Yeah she could. She could have been the uh, the
- 44:04Speaker 3: teacher assistant or whatever that Darmitt Maroney fucks in his trailer.
- 44:08Speaker 4: Oh yeah, well you know they didn't have sex. She
- 44:12Speaker 4: came over like that part was stupid too.
- 44:16Speaker 3: Yeah. He invites her in like they're gonna have a threesub.
- 44:21Speaker 3: Dian Lane says, I would rather die.
- 44:23Speaker 4: I just oh, we're just having dinner you want to go,
- 44:25Speaker 4: Like he acts like it's a what Yeah, what if
- 44:27Speaker 4: doesn't he live in a trailer by the way, Yeah.
- 44:30Speaker 2: That's why I laugh. Yeah it was. It was just
- 44:32Speaker 2: a fucking trailer.
- 44:33Speaker 3: Yeah, for thirty million dollar budget, the best you could
- 44:37Speaker 3: do is a trailer park for the character's homes.
- 44:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I got Yeah, And now we're shitting on trailer parks.
- 44:45Speaker 4: Well, I just mean he has this confidence, but it's
- 44:49Speaker 4: like he like, what if.
- 44:50Speaker 2: M cash go ahead? Sorry, I don't know.
- 44:52Speaker 4: I just mean, like, there's nothing wrong with trailer parts,
- 44:54Speaker 4: but I guess you're thinking, like it doesn't really fit
- 44:57Speaker 4: that character. So it's kind of strange.
- 44:59Speaker 2: Well, he he's down on his look, you.
- 45:01Speaker 4: Know, he's divorced. Divorced. Yeah, everybody's divorced in this movie.
- 45:07Speaker 2: What if mccash is right and he wanted to have
- 45:10Speaker 2: a threesome? So like he invites Diane Lane in What If,
- 45:13Speaker 2: she says yes, and then he just starts fucking that
- 45:15Speaker 2: woman and it's like, oh man, this is this is
- 45:22Speaker 2: a different movie.
- 45:23Speaker 4: Now different.
- 45:24Speaker 3: Yeah, but they show a dog there if the single
- 45:30Speaker 3: white is rocking, don't come and knock in? So this
- 45:34Speaker 3: is from uh the the movie's Wikipedia page. Uh. Diane
- 45:40Speaker 3: Lane took the part because she wanted to do something
- 45:42Speaker 3: different from her recent roles, which were kind of steamy,
- 45:45Speaker 3: and also wanted to keep the show the shoot local.
- 45:49Speaker 3: She was extremely nervous about any improv that Cuzak added
- 45:53Speaker 3: to the film, and when John tried to make her
- 45:56Speaker 3: improv she thought, this is a quote from her. I
- 45:58Speaker 3: don't feel that confident. I start blushing profusely, and I
- 46:02Speaker 3: get all sweaty, and I don't I don't know, and yeah.
- 46:06Speaker 2: John Cusack, that wiley veteran just walking down.
- 46:10Speaker 4: Diane Lane writes the script and then show's up on
- 46:15Speaker 4: set and wants to improvise.
- 46:17Speaker 3: And not get credit for uh. John was actually about
- 46:22Speaker 3: to do another film in Europe, but it fell through
- 46:25Speaker 3: at the last minute. He met with Goldberg and after
- 46:28Speaker 3: reading the script, they asked him to be in the film,
- 46:31Speaker 3: and impressed with the actors that were already signed on,
- 46:33Speaker 3: Cusac thought, that's a pretty good predigee predigee pedigree. Jesus,
- 46:40Speaker 3: I think I had a stroke, So I was kind
- 46:44Speaker 3: of happy to be asked to join such a great group. Well,
- 46:47Speaker 3: look at him being highly yeah yeah, uh, And he
- 46:51Speaker 3: said he always wanted to work with Lane and had
- 46:53Speaker 3: been following her career for some time.
- 46:56Speaker 4: I I guess I see your points. I was looking
- 47:01Speaker 4: and she she did a few things to try, and
- 47:05Speaker 4: I guess must love dogs is kind of like lighting
- 47:07Speaker 4: it up. I mean, she already had done Under the
- 47:09Speaker 4: Tuscan Sun just a couple of years ago. But before
- 47:12Speaker 4: that was Unfaithful, The Glasshouse, Hardball, the Perfect Storm. She
- 47:17Speaker 4: was in My Dog's Skip, though no one told me
- 47:20Speaker 4: about that one. And she loves these dog things because
- 47:24Speaker 4: in nineteen ninety six she was in a movie called
- 47:26Speaker 4: Mad Dog Time. I bet that's good.
- 47:30Speaker 3: Could couldn't tell?
- 47:31Speaker 2: Mad Dog Time? Is that the sequel for Dog Day Afternoon.
- 47:35Speaker 4: I'm looking it up.
- 47:36Speaker 3: Let me see, Or is it a documentary about mad
- 47:39Speaker 3: Dog twenty twenty?
- 47:42Speaker 2: Maybe it's time for Spending Dogs.
- 47:44Speaker 4: Well, hey, listen, guys. Gabriel Burns in it, Ellen Barkins
- 47:49Speaker 4: in it, Jeff Goldbloom's in it, Richard Dreyfuss is in it.
- 47:52Speaker 4: It was directed by Larry Bishop, and with six reviews,
- 47:57Speaker 4: it's at seventeen percent rotten. All right, okay, must have
- 48:01Speaker 4: been watching from Prime. Everyone. You can watch it on Prime.
- 48:04Speaker 3: There we go, I don't eve think you can get
- 48:06Speaker 3: that on TV.
- 48:07Speaker 4: Listen to this, the first movie I have seen that
- 48:09Speaker 4: does not improve on the site of a blank screen
- 48:12Speaker 4: viewed for the same week of time. Roger Ebert, he
- 48:16Speaker 4: gave it zero out of four.
- 48:18Speaker 2: Roger Ebert.
- 48:22Speaker 4: Did anyway. But yeah, okay, So she wanted to do
- 48:25Speaker 4: something light and funny and then got cast next to
- 48:27Speaker 4: John Cusack and regretted it.
- 48:29Speaker 3: Got it.
- 48:30Speaker 2: You can't. You can't help yourself.
- 48:32Speaker 3: All right. I do have one could have, would have,
- 48:36Speaker 3: should have. And that's for the casting of Carol Uh,
- 48:41Speaker 3: the Uh sister played by Elizabeth Parkins. Okay, who do
- 48:46Speaker 3: we think could have played that character? I don't think
- 48:50Speaker 3: this is an actress we've ever mentioned on this show
- 48:53Speaker 3: or reviewed a film.
- 48:54Speaker 2: Oh wow, Oh, I don't think. Well, I'm gonna say then.
- 49:02Speaker 4: I'm gonna say Patricia Arks.
- 49:05Speaker 3: Neither to those. But I will say she is married
- 49:09Speaker 3: to a very famous and well known actor mm that
- 49:14Speaker 3: I don't know if we've talked about him on this podcast.
- 49:17Speaker 2: Wow.
- 49:18Speaker 4: Okay, so she's married to a very famous actor.
- 49:21Speaker 2: That's uh okay.
- 49:24Speaker 3: And it's not Rita Wilson.
- 49:25Speaker 4: Is it around the same age like Elizabeth Perkins.
- 49:29Speaker 3: I would definitely say so. I don't know their ages,
- 49:31Speaker 3: but I would have to I don't think Kate Upton
- 49:35Speaker 3: is as supposed to age as are.
- 49:38Speaker 4: You thinking of the right person. It's Kate Upton, that
- 49:41Speaker 4: that woman that had all those kids and divorced that guy.
- 49:44Speaker 3: Kate Upton is like a former Victoria's Secrets model.
- 49:48Speaker 4: Oh yeah, oh yeah, yeah, yeah, No, that's not who
- 49:49Speaker 4: I'm talking about. It's the wife of Spielberg. She's not
- 49:53Speaker 4: He's not even an actor.
- 49:56Speaker 2: I honestly don't know that I can muster a guess.
- 49:58Speaker 4: Of someone that's that famous, because I parton may want
- 50:01Speaker 4: to say Goldie Hawn.
- 50:02Speaker 2: Bet Middler not that old, not that old.
- 50:09Speaker 4: But Goldie Hawn and Kurter married. So let me hold on,
- 50:12Speaker 4: hold on, let me think of I'm assuming they got
- 50:14Speaker 4: to be a famous couple.
- 50:15Speaker 2: Nev Campbell.
- 50:16Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, hold.
- 50:17Speaker 4: On, let's think about amous acting.
- 50:20Speaker 3: Do you want me to give you a TV show?
- 50:22Speaker 4: She started in Okay, give me one.
- 50:25Speaker 3: She did one hundred and nine episodes of a show
- 50:27Speaker 3: called The Closer.
- 50:29Speaker 4: Oh Glenn Close, No, oh no, Kira Sedwick, there you go,
- 50:37Speaker 4: Berry to Kevin Bacon, yeh, got it. Okay, I could
- 50:41Speaker 4: kind of see that. To be honest, I could.
- 50:43Speaker 3: It might have been better to be honest.
- 50:44Speaker 4: She's in, Yeah, she's in like subpar movies.
- 50:49Speaker 3: Okay, phenomenon something to talk about. Ye Heart and Souls
- 50:54Speaker 3: with Robert Downey Jr. Yep. Uh. Singles, I have a.
- 51:00Speaker 4: I don't think I've seen I don't think I've seen
- 51:01Speaker 4: that one.
- 51:02Speaker 3: Born on the fourth of July.
- 51:03Speaker 4: Oh, I've seen that one.
- 51:05Speaker 3: I've never seen. Singles from the nineties.
- 51:07Speaker 4: I don't think so.
- 51:09Speaker 3: It doesn't see it's a classic. It's a It's Kevin Dylon,
- 51:14Speaker 3: I's gonna be Matt Dillon. Don't mix those two and
- 51:17Speaker 3: Bridget Fonda and Bill Pullman, damn, Eric Stoltz, Jeremy Piven,
- 51:24Speaker 3: Tom Skirritt about that, it's like it's like the typical,
- 51:28Speaker 3: it's the essential, like nineties alternative music film. It's not
- 51:35Speaker 3: music related, but nonetheless, Okay, singles and reality bites go
- 51:40Speaker 3: kind of hand in hand together.
- 51:41Speaker 4: Hmm. Okay, that's a good that's a good comparison.
- 51:45Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, Yeah, that's all I have for this classic
- 51:51Speaker 3: John Cusack film.
- 51:53Speaker 4: More than enough.
- 51:54Speaker 3: Even I can't say that the only the only quote
- 51:56Speaker 3: I have or something I enjoyed is just where I
- 51:59Speaker 3: think it's Elizabeth Park. His character says to Dan Lane,
- 52:01Speaker 3: where are your boob shirts?
- 52:02Speaker 2: That's in my notes too, that was where are your
- 52:05Speaker 2: boob shirts?
- 52:06Speaker 4: I liked. I like the way Christopher Plumber explained that
- 52:10Speaker 4: he was just tap dancing. I like that.
- 52:13Speaker 2: Yeah. I when she's on the date with the guy
- 52:17Speaker 2: and she says he stopped loving me. The way she
- 52:20Speaker 2: delivers that I thought was it was pretty pretty brutal.
- 52:25Speaker 3: I also pa.
- 52:27Speaker 2: She executed that scene well.
- 52:29Speaker 4: I can't remember if it's the first meeting between Diane
- 52:34Speaker 4: Lane and John Cusack where there's like a few dogs
- 52:36Speaker 4: running in the park. But and I this was actually
- 52:42Speaker 4: an I m dB. But Joan Cusack was one of
- 52:44Speaker 4: the dogs.
- 52:48Speaker 3: Let's get out of here.
- 52:49Speaker 2: Was that fine? What hey, I'll drink to? That was
- 52:55Speaker 2: the The ending is supposed to be a bit of
- 52:57Speaker 2: a nod to when Harry met Sally. The way they
- 53:00Speaker 2: got the people like interviewing them.
- 53:02Speaker 3: With Yeah, that's the vibe I got.
- 53:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I kind of.
- 53:08Speaker 3: I don't think you ever turned it ont They.
- 53:10Speaker 4: Were at a cookout and the credit started to roll.
- 53:13Speaker 4: Yeah was it after that?
- 53:15Speaker 3: Yeah? It's like a Marvel film. Man, you gotta stick around.
- 53:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 53:17Speaker 4: Yeah, well.
- 53:20Speaker 3: They they load up the sequel to get you ready
- 53:22Speaker 3: for the sequel. Must love Cats, Must Love Cats.
- 53:25Speaker 2: The last, the last note that I have for this
- 53:28Speaker 2: is that this film was a reminder that I will
- 53:30Speaker 2: die alone if my wife ever leaves me, because I
- 53:32Speaker 2: can't deal with it.
- 53:32Speaker 4: It does look awful.
- 53:34Speaker 3: Yeah that is fair. Uh. I kind of struggle come
- 53:40Speaker 3: up with the Mount Rushmore question for this movie. So
- 53:42Speaker 3: because we've already done favorite John Cusack films, I don't
- 53:45Speaker 3: think all of us combined have seen enough die in
- 53:48Speaker 3: Lane films to do that as a question. So I
- 53:51Speaker 3: simply went with favorite dog movies.
- 53:54Speaker 2: This one was pretty easy for me. Uh. There were
- 53:57Speaker 2: there were three that popped up into my head right
- 54:00Speaker 2: off the bat, Homeward Bound Marley and Oh So Sad,
- 54:05Speaker 2: Best in Show m M. And then I had to
- 54:08Speaker 2: kind of look and see, like, Okay, what else is
- 54:10Speaker 2: out there? And then I realized that I'm a I'm
- 54:14Speaker 2: a Wes Anderson fan, so I'm gonna go with Isle
- 54:15Speaker 2: of Dogs.
- 54:17Speaker 3: Great.
- 54:18Speaker 4: I I was kind of wondering exactly, like what is
- 54:24Speaker 4: a dog movie like? Because must love Dogs? Doesn't really
- 54:28Speaker 4: have that many dogs, So I I kind of went
- 54:33Speaker 4: both ways. I went I thought Best in Show was
- 54:37Speaker 4: a good one. Yeah, so I like that one. I
- 54:41Speaker 4: went with there's a movie called The Friend that came
- 54:46Speaker 4: out last year and Naomi watching Bill Murray. Yeah, that
- 54:49Speaker 4: was one of my favorites of last year.
- 54:52Speaker 2: I want to watch that.
- 54:53Speaker 4: Yeah, so I went with that one. I I went
- 54:56Speaker 4: with as good as it gets because there's a there's
- 54:59Speaker 4: a big part of it in there about the dog
- 55:01Speaker 4: and kind of the dog.
- 55:02Speaker 3: And so the dog's on the poster.
- 55:05Speaker 4: Yeah, him and Jack just them too, and then that basically,
- 55:12Speaker 4: and then I mean it was kind of tough because honestly,
- 55:14Speaker 4: in some of the ones I've seen, like I saw
- 55:17Speaker 4: like Seven Psychopaths was because of the dog. But I'm
- 55:21Speaker 4: I'm not counting. Yeah, I thought about that one too,
- 55:24Speaker 4: But then I I kind of went back more towards
- 55:28Speaker 4: like just the dog part of it. And there is
- 55:32Speaker 4: actually a movie that I thought was way better than
- 55:35Speaker 4: it had any right being and it has Channing Tatum
- 55:38Speaker 4: in and it's just called Dog. Oh yeah, where he
- 55:41Speaker 4: goes takes a dog with the military. So I'm gonna
- 55:44Speaker 4: go I'm gonna I'll go with those.
- 55:46Speaker 3: That's good for As soon as I posed this question
- 55:49Speaker 3: my wife, she just screamed, Benji at me.
- 55:51Speaker 4: I thought about Secret Life of Pets the first one.
- 55:55Speaker 4: I like that one a lot.
- 55:56Speaker 3: But anyway, for my four, I went animated on two
- 55:59Speaker 3: of them. Uh. The Fox and the Hound is my
- 56:02Speaker 3: favorite cartoon of all time.
- 56:04Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 56:05Speaker 3: And then I followed that up with All Dogs Go
- 56:07Speaker 3: to Heaven, one of my favorite Burt Reynolds films.
- 56:11Speaker 2: How about that?
- 56:12Speaker 3: And then I went on the other spectrum with the
- 56:15Speaker 3: other two because I went in horror and one only
- 56:18Speaker 3: has they both only have one dog in it. But
- 56:20Speaker 3: I am legend that scene that's a good one. That
- 56:24Speaker 3: scene with Will Smith and the dog. Oh, it breaks
- 56:26Speaker 3: my heart every time. And then lastly, kujo hey there.
- 56:33Speaker 4: And I am legend I it was so Will Smith
- 56:35Speaker 4: slapped the ship out of that dog.
- 56:37Speaker 2: I forgot. Uh, I forgot about that movie.
- 56:39Speaker 4: Did you forget about that scene?
- 56:41Speaker 3: I don't think I remember the scene where the dog
- 56:43Speaker 3: gets slapped.
- 56:44Speaker 4: Yeah, no, no, no, that was the thing. They uncovered
- 56:47Speaker 4: it after the oscars where this like this is not
- 56:49Speaker 4: the first time, the first time he's done this?
- 56:53Speaker 3: Gotcha? God?
- 56:54Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 56:54Speaker 4: Yeah, who are those those animal rights people? Yeah, and
- 57:00Speaker 4: they went after his ass, they did, gotcha?
- 57:03Speaker 2: All right?
- 57:04Speaker 3: All right? Anything else to add about? Must love dogs,
- 57:06Speaker 3: gym before we get out of here.
- 57:08Speaker 2: Think we're good to go.
- 57:09Speaker 4: I had fun though.
