- 0:13SPEAKER_04: Alrighty, here we are.
- 0:15SPEAKER_01: It's a first for me.
- 0:16SPEAKER_04: What's a first?
- 0:17SPEAKER_01: Casey hosting.
- 0:19SPEAKER_02: Oh, am I the boss right now?
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you are.
- 0:22SPEAKER_02: Is that supposed to be a mix between this one and She Wakes?
- 0:25SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: I like it.
- 0:26SPEAKER_04: It is kind of.
- 0:27SPEAKER_04: I think it has.
- 0:28SPEAKER_04: Like kind of the bright happiness, but also the coolness.
- 0:31SPEAKER_04: I know.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: I kind of like it.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: So you get the boss today?
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: I have a couple POs I'd like to turn in.
- 0:36SPEAKER_04: I don't do that type of boss thing.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 0:39SPEAKER_04: I'll just do my best to facilitate this conversation.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: Oh man, I can already tell you like we're gonna go probably down the line of the road.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be not good.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: At least Mike's in here.
- 0:51SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: That's true, though.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: There's a couple of times he looks at me and I'll say, It's Tuesday.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: I just gotta remind him.
- 1:01SPEAKER_04: What in the world day it is?
- 1:03SPEAKER_04: Oh man, and busy summer.
- 1:04SPEAKER_04: It's like busy summer.
- 1:05SPEAKER_04: I always think, Oh, I can't wait for summer.
- 1:07SPEAKER_04: And I'm like, wow, it's just as busy as so busy.
- 1:10SPEAKER_04: So it makes me mad.
- 1:11SPEAKER_02: It's a horrible.
- 1:12SPEAKER_05: I do not like it.
- 1:13SPEAKER_02: I love the summer, but I hate that it goes so fast.
- 1:15SPEAKER_04: It's like busy without structure.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: So it's just as busy.
- 1:19SPEAKER_04: Just just horrible.
- 1:20SPEAKER_04: No format.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: And if you like structure, this is awful.
- 1:23SPEAKER_04: It's tough.
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: You keep structure.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: That's why I hate summer.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: So he doesn't go crazy.
- 1:28SPEAKER_02: No, no.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: I don't really have structure in the summer.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: Well, I think it's everybody else, too, right?
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: So it's like, okay, who's here this week?
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 1:36SPEAKER_02: Around the offices gets crazy.
- 1:37SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah.
- 1:38SPEAKER_04: We're just on our toes every day.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: Like, who's coming in here?
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: I just said earlier today to a bunch of people, and I was like, I'm the opposite of my dad.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: The older I get, the more I like cold.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: And I don't think that's right.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: You're gonna be moving up.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: This is gonna be a problem for us.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: I'm like, I'm looking here and I'm going, uh oh.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: We're talking about it.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: We're talking about like our 30th anniversary trip.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: I'm like, you know, I'm gonna do Iceland in the winter.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: Like, that would be awesome.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:02SPEAKER_04: I mean, I would go there.
- 2:03SPEAKER_04: There's hot springs.
- 2:04SPEAKER_04: You would be fine.
- 2:05SPEAKER_04: Perfect.
- 2:05SPEAKER_04: Put her in a hot spring, put her in the blue little.
- 2:07SPEAKER_02: But I don't want to go somewhere cold when it's supposed to be the hot season.
- 2:11SPEAKER_02: So June, our anniversary is Sunday.
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: So in the summer it's supposed to be hot.
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: I don't want to go visit somewhere cold.
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: Because I just came out of the cold.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: Our anniversary is last Sunday.
- 2:22SPEAKER_02: Whatever.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: But I don't want to go somewhere cold when I'm supposed to be hot.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: Gotcha.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: Like it has not been hot enough for me this summer.
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: It's making me mad.
- 2:32SPEAKER_02: What's with the rain?
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: There was a lot of rain.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: That's what like California.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: I know we talked about this last week.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: Every day.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: California, it was it was I mean, it's like 80.
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: It's not a good thing.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: Every day is like the cloud, not a cloudless guy.
- 2:44SPEAKER_02: I was like, this is why people live here.
- 2:47SPEAKER_02: And I just told Carson on the way over, the other thing about LA that we've been before and I did not like it because I thought it was disgusting.
- 2:54SPEAKER_02: It is dirty.
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: You gotta get out of the hair.
- 2:56SPEAKER_02: Very dirty parts.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: Go to the hills.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: But everything in the hills, everything's pristine.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: The hills.
- 3:01SPEAKER_04: I mean like the terrain.
- 3:03SPEAKER_02: But even if you go in the hills, like all their landscaping is so manicured and taken care of.
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: But it's all like succulents too, which is helpful.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: But because they're fine.
- 3:11SPEAKER_02: Their magnolia trees are huge.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: Or not the magnolia trees, hibiscus.
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: Because they don't ever die.
- 3:18SPEAKER_02: I'm like, this is why I should not live in a place nice weather.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: So it's they look past the traffic.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: They're like, I don't care about the traffic.
- 3:24SPEAKER_02: The flowers are beautiful.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: The old 70s song says it never rains in Southern California.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: But you guys are in LA.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: They have a rainy season, apparently.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Do they get okay?
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: That's what I was wondering.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: And one of the ladies said it's actually a great week to visit because they usually call June, June gloom.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: It must not have a lot of sunshine.
- 3:42SPEAKER_02: But I looked at their forecast sunny, like literally just a whole sun on the forecast for like the next 12 days out.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I mean it was the same day.
- 3:51SPEAKER_02: Illinois like cloud, rains up, down.
- 3:54SPEAKER_04: We have midwest weather lightning.
- 3:56SPEAKER_04: My parents were out there the same time as you.
- 3:58SPEAKER_04: They did a 17-day motorcycle trip.
- 4:00SPEAKER_04: It's the longest they ever did.
- 4:02SPEAKER_04: And they went from here.
- 4:04SPEAKER_02: They drove their motorcycle from here.
- 4:06SPEAKER_04: They didn't trailer it.
- 4:06SPEAKER_04: They drove.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: How's their bones?
- 4:09SPEAKER_04: Their bones were sore.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: My bones sore just here in the summer.
- 4:13SPEAKER_04: I know.
- 4:13SPEAKER_04: They drove from here to Washington and then came all the way down.
- 4:17SPEAKER_04: And then back through.
- 4:19SPEAKER_04: I think they went, I think they were gonna do the Grand Canyon on the way back, but they didn't.
- 4:22SPEAKER_04: They did like Utah.
- 4:24SPEAKER_04: But they had to stop.
- 4:25SPEAKER_04: So it was sleeting on them when they got closer to Washington.
- 4:28SPEAKER_04: And so they stopped to get a heated seat and like a liner for their clothes.
- 4:32SPEAKER_04: Oh my gosh.
- 4:32SPEAKER_04: But then they went through what's the place that's called the Death Valley?
- 4:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 4:36SPEAKER_04: It was 109 when they got there.
- 4:38SPEAKER_04: So they were like, our bodies are like, can't figure out what where to settle.
- 4:43SPEAKER_02: Listen, your dad married a gym right there.
- 4:46SPEAKER_02: She was nervous, but she went.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: But she went.
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: She went, yeah.
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: If Jamie was like, let's go on a motorcycle tip.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: I mean, with him they do drive motorcycles.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: They do drive motorcycles.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: So it would be a little weird for me.
- 4:57SPEAKER_02: Be like, I know, but like even when you had a motorcycle for a hot minute, I was like, oh, we'll never be on that thing.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: All right, let's move past that.
- 5:05SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 5:06SPEAKER_04: So diving into Corinthians.
- 5:07SPEAKER_04: I'll be honest, I read five, but and here we go.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: This is the most I thought I'm gonna have right here.
- 5:15SPEAKER_04: Sorry.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: But when you're driving this bus.
- 5:17SPEAKER_04: I'm just hosting.
- 5:18SPEAKER_04: I'm here to ask questions, poke the conversation.
- 5:22SPEAKER_04: So uh let's dive in.
- 5:24SPEAKER_04: Chapter six, Corinthians.
- 5:27SPEAKER_04: Where do we want to start?
- 5:28SPEAKER_04: Chatting about big topics here lawsuits, sexual sin.
- 5:31SPEAKER_04: Where are we going?
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: It's a lot of dispute stuff, right?
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: And it even goes into chapter five, where chapter five is talking a little a lot about conflict and obviously opinions on how to handle conflict.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: And, you know, everyone was so appalled that you know Paul would even bring this up.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: And I know we talked about last week where it's like, have you ever experienced that where someone has asked someone to leave?
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: But he's he's bringing it right back in where he's talking about, you know, relationship with believers.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: Like, hey, listen, if you have a dispute, you know, you you can't take this to an unbeliever, a court, a judge to to settle this.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: As believers, you've got to come together and you gotta do this right.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: And I I think that's the you know, and like we talked about last week, I think still is the case here.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: Paul wasn't thinking about this moment, he was thinking about eternity.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: So, hey, I'm willing to kick him out so that he would realize where he's at.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: And if he does, man, the the day of salvation, judgment day, he's gonna be there.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: And that's the more important thing than his feelings right now, being hurt because he's been asked to leave.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like he's refusing to do something.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: So dispute, I think you can go.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Well, what dispute?
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: And I think Paul's going, it doesn't matter.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: If you have a dispute with another believer, man, don't even think about taking it to an unbeliever to settle it.
- 6:44SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: As believers, you gotta settle this thing.
- 6:46SPEAKER_04: I think that's where like church people get it wrong sometimes too.
- 6:50SPEAKER_04: The the view of church is, oh, I'm a sinner, I do this or that, so they won't accept me.
- 6:55SPEAKER_04: And Christians have treated unbelievers that way sometimes in the past.
- 7:00SPEAKER_04: But we're called to be calling out people that claim to be Christ followers.
- 7:05SPEAKER_04: If something's out of line, we are invited to say, hey, that's out of line.
- 7:09SPEAKER_04: Like, that's not God's design, that's not God's order.
- 7:12SPEAKER_04: But we don't want to do that all the time.
- 7:14SPEAKER_04: Can be uncomfortable.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: We're offended all the time.
- 7:17SPEAKER_02: That's why.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: Like we don't allow people to do that for us anymore.
- 7:21SPEAKER_02: Like if you would come to me and say that, I mean, not saying you and me necessarily, but like for the most part, usually the typical response would be for me to be offended, and I'm never gonna go back because the church hurt me.
- 7:32SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's instead of oh, Casey's actually loves me and see something that could lead me down a wrong path, and she loves me so much that she came to warn me about it.
- 7:43SPEAKER_02: And we don't like that anymore.
- 7:47SPEAKER_02: We don't like it from our parents, we don't like we don't like it from anybody.
- 7:49SPEAKER_02: No, yeah.
- 7:51SPEAKER_02: But then you're like, don't judge me.
- 7:52SPEAKER_02: That's where you're gonna be like, don't judge me.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: I think one of my favorite quotes about offense and everything is that offense is an event.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: Being offended is a decision.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: Offenses are gonna come, right?
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: In the world.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: But being offended is a decision.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: So what you do with that and how you handle it.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: It's not that they're not gonna come.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: And I think as as we look at First Corinthians six is saying, you're gonna have all kinds of offenses that come.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: Are you gonna be offended over it?
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: You know, is how you're gonna handle it is uh I I was thinking about this scenario.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: This happened as actual thing of uh years ago.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: And when I was up in St.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: Joe, there was a uh couple in the church that gonna build a new home.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: And so the person that built the builder was in the church too.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: So they did this whole building a new home, and it was it was a pretty extravagant home with no contract because well, we both went to church together and all this, and then it ended up the house was out of square, it was it was a mess.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: Whoops.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: And so they they end up coming to see me, like, okay.
- 9:10SPEAKER_03: To fix their house?
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: To fix their yeah, to fix their house.
- 9:12SPEAKER_03: Casey signed you up for that.
- 9:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we had no husband can do that.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: Casey wasn't around then.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: No, that was the other woman coming up.
- 9:19SPEAKER_03: But Renee would have done the same thing.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Renee would have been So then it's like I said, Well, you know, what would would your contract?
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: What you're gonna they said, well, we didn't have a contract.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: I said, that was your first mistake.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: Even as believers, when you come together, you should work out an agreement.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: Maybe that's if you don't want to say contract, but you should have a stipulation of agreement of things.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: And so what happened, and they were good friends.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: So what happened was the the relationships ended.
- 9:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: And I can't remember if they ended up trying to go to court over it or not.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: But the kicker to me was so they both got affinity to each other and left they both parties left the church.
- 10:03SPEAKER_04: Sad.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: Um because they were in that so there was a there was a lot of of you know death to a lot of things there because of not understanding how to deal with that kind of difference and issue that I think is is reflective from First Corinthians chapter six.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: How do we handle those kinds of things?
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: I was refreshing myself on chapter six today, and in my commentary that I have, there is a like a table of he has I don't even know how to explain the table, and you'd have to see it, but he has these three points which I think are really good to hear.
- 10:48SPEAKER_02: So it says you allow you the right, according to Roman law, to sue fellow members of a family in a Roman court, so of the body of Christ.
- 10:59SPEAKER_02: This is a normal Corinthian practice.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: You do not do so because it demonstrates your community's lack of wisdom, love, holiness, and the spirit, and is unloving, unjust, and unchristlike.
- 11:14SPEAKER_02: But rather find judges within the community to settle the matter or endure the injustice.
- 11:20SPEAKER_02: Because he points out, he doesn't say that you shouldn't settle the matter.
- 11:25SPEAKER_02: He's just saying, why are you not doing it within the amongst yourselves?
- 11:29SPEAKER_02: Why are you going outside of the family of God?
- 11:31SPEAKER_02: And I think he also puts the language in there too of like not just I think we can be like a Christian suing another Christian, but when you bring it to like family language, like you're a family member suing another family member, it gives it a little bit more weight.
- 11:47SPEAKER_02: Like you can't separate that as much, maybe.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: But I was like, oh, that's a really good way to put it.
- 11:53SPEAKER_02: Like the matter can still be settled.
- 11:56SPEAKER_02: You just need to find wise counsel within your body to do it.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: I think that's why my focus was, you know, offend offense, you know.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: So like an offended brother.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: I mean, if you go back to Proverbs and what Solomon says, it says an offended brother is harder to be won than a strong city, which I don't know that we understand, but like from that standpoint, when he's making that statement, he's going, guys, you know how difficult it is to conquer a strong city.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: That's how hard it is to win an offended brother.
- 12:29SPEAKER_01: So something has to give.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: I could be, I can be right and you're offended.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: The rightness never comes out as long as you're offended.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: So it's like, that's why when I say things like, this is not about right or wrong at this moment.
- 12:43SPEAKER_01: This is about the fact that you're offended.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: And that could be all, I mean, think about all the things, you know, that we could be offended about.
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: And it's not just, we're not just talking church, we're talking about, you know, again, we're talking to believers and we're saying, like, hey, this could be you're not showing up for family dinners because you're offended.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: This could be you're not going to a work thing because you're offended.
- 13:01SPEAKER_01: Who you are at work now is because you're offended.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: Like all the things that, and here's the sad part for me, what it keeps us from experiencing.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: Like, think about the like a family gathering and how it should be, but so-and-so's not here because they're offended.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: And I think that's what Paul is ultimately addressing.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: He's like, Listen, your offense has now led you to take something to an unbeliever who has no right to speak to this.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: How dare you?
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, how dare you do that?
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: And again, I I have to always remember Paul's not looking at them in the eye, he's he's sending them a letter asking that question.
- 13:40SPEAKER_01: Like, I'm hearing that this is happening, and how dare you guys do this?
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: And then he goes through, like, hey, this is our role as the church.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: And but again, I think the the foundation of it is if you have an offended individual, that offense has to be worked out, or we'll we can never have a conversation.
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: I mean, it it's just it's a very difficult thing.
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: If you have an offended spouse and you're trying to work through something, and like it's gonna be very difficult to do as long as offense is the foundation and not restoration.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: Everything Paul was saying was how do we restore and reconcile the individual?
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: That was the aim.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: I don't know that that's always our aim.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: I think for the most part, even us, our aim is to be right before it is restoration.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: So do you think that's what's at the core of offense is our need to be right?
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: Or what do you what do you which I like to hear you guys?
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: What do you think is at the core of when you get offended?
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: Well, you don't like to be wrong.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think it might be the same thing.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: What is it?
- 14:44SPEAKER_04: Well, my thing, like what Pastor Jamie's saying, I don't like to be uncomfortable.
- 14:49SPEAKER_04: So it's not necessarily that I want to be right all the time, but I don't want to go pursue a hard conversation because right now, in the moment, it feels better to just like leave it alone.
- 15:00SPEAKER_04: But if I cared kingdom, if I cared about eternity and that person's soul, I will step in and have maybe an awkward season.
- 15:09SPEAKER_04: It could be an awkward year with that person or an uncomfortable whatever, you know, to like call something out.
- 15:14SPEAKER_04: But I I like to feel good in the moment and not think kingdom.
- 15:19SPEAKER_04: So it's selfish, it's all selfish.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so you just avoid it.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: So you avoid it, right?
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: So then it's like if I know that you're gonna be the person that challenges me, pushes me, and I don't want to be challenged, yeah, I don't want to be pushed, I'm gonna avoid being around you.
- 15:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I've done it both ways.
- 15:38SPEAKER_04: I've avoided because I don't want to be challenged, and I've avoided because I don't want to challenge.
- 15:41SPEAKER_04: So it's bad.
- 15:42SPEAKER_04: Just being honest, something I'm working on.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: Well, like we said last week, it's easier to say nothing.
- 15:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: But in the end, who what have we lost?
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: At the potential of like, well, I don't want to ruffle any feathers, or who am I to judge?
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: Or man, I got my own things going on.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: I don't want to pry.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: But it's like, you know, the old analogy of like, I'm no, but if like if their car was going the wrong direction, would it be?
- 16:07SPEAKER_04: 100%, yeah.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: In the physical for what reason?
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: Because you don't want destruction to happen.
- 16:11SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: So if you can see in someone like, oh, destruction is coming your way.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: Because I think my worst thought process for whether now or the end of time, like, and we could that's a whole nother conversation.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: But like the end of time, the worst thing that I think could be said is someone saying to you, Why didn't you tell me?
- 16:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: How come, how come you knew and you didn't tell me?
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: Like that to me freaks me out the most.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:43SPEAKER_04: I had a friend sharing a story with me one time.
- 16:46SPEAKER_04: Um, and she was just telling me kind of the story of where they got to where they were, and it was years and years and years of living a certain way and then not and she goes, You know what I thought too?
- 16:54SPEAKER_04: Like, we were in church the whole time.
- 16:56SPEAKER_04: I'm so surprised no one ever said anything because we had no idea.
- 16:59SPEAKER_04: And I was like, What?
- 17:01SPEAKER_04: I feel bad because like I did life with this person too, and I never said anything.
- 17:05SPEAKER_04: And so when it when she said that, I was just kind of like, oh my word.
- 17:09SPEAKER_04: I'm one of those, like, I walked beside you for years and never said anything.
- 17:13SPEAKER_04: I'm like, oh, I assume they they know how the Bible would speak towards that or whatever, they'll figure it out, but no, nobody just said so Don't you think he gives the option here to um to just take the unjustice and walk away?
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: Because they it seems like there could be disputing over ordinary matters.
- 17:36SPEAKER_02: And and he says, why not just let's see what's versus it?
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: Why not verse seven?
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: Why not just accept the injustice?
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: Why not just accept the injustice?
- 17:47SPEAKER_02: And I think about like if you go back to the life of Jesus, like he's standing before um here's my brain not functioning well for me.
- 18:01SPEAKER_02: Who does Jesus stand before before he goes to the pilot?
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, thank you, Pilate.
- 18:05SPEAKER_02: And who's the other one?
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: Bible trivia one of one.
- 18:10SPEAKER_02: There's two.
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: Pilate, who's the first guy?
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: Like the Roman governor, yeah.
- 18:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 18:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:15SPEAKER_02: Anyway.
- 18:16SPEAKER_02: Herod, yeah.
- 18:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and then Pilate's coyophague.
- 18:18SPEAKER_02: And so all the they're bringing all the accusations right to him.
- 18:21SPEAKER_02: And what does Jesus do?
- 18:22SPEAKER_02: He doesn't do anything, he doesn't defend himself, he just takes the injustice on.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: So I'm like, as Christians, that is an option for us.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: We don't always have to defend ourselves.
- 18:33SPEAKER_02: I think we live in a culture who we think that we have the right to defend ourselves at all costs.
- 18:39SPEAKER_02: And if these are really just ordinary disputes, this isn't like you've had a family member murdered.
- 18:48SPEAKER_02: Like we're not talking about like criminal offenses.
- 18:52SPEAKER_02: These are ordinary disputes that are trivial, which Jesus' wasn't, obviously, but you can you have the option to just take the take the injustice and move on.
- 19:04SPEAKER_02: Forgive and move on.
- 19:05SPEAKER_02: And I don't think we do that very well in a society.
- 19:08SPEAKER_02: We always want to be avenged.
- 19:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: Well, it's the you know, the the David writing in Psalm 69, where he says, Those who hate me, you know, without a cause are more than the hairs of my head, they are mighty who would destroy me, being my enemies wrongfully, though I've stolen nothing.
- 19:25SPEAKER_01: Like I've not stolen anything.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: I and these are the five words that he says that I think puts into what you're saying.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: I still must restore it.
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: So he's coming from a standpoint, or when Peter says, if at all possible with you, live at peace with everyone.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: Like, well, sometimes living at peace with everyone doesn't mean saying anything.
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: It means just letting it go.
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: However, the restoration side, like there might be a time where someone says, Well, you made me feel this way, and you don't pick up the offense, you go, I'm I'm sorry I made you feel that way.
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: Like that was not my intent.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry that happened.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: Like what that sorry would do versus I didn't make you feel that way.
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: I can't make you feel that way.
- 20:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: Like I'm I'm gonna lower my pride and go, okay, uh, I'm sorry I made you feel that way.
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: Maybe I did.
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: Unintentional.
- 20:14SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry that happened.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: I think about what that does by apologizing, by recognizing, okay, you felt that way.
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: I think it's because of some insecurities or whatever.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: It doesn't matter this moment.
- 20:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: My responsibility is to restore it.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: And here's what restoring it looks like.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry that happened.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: And I've even come from a standpoint of there's going to be times where you have to say sorry for something you didn't do because restoration is the goal.
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: And that's that's where I think it hits the pride side of it.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: And I think again, what he's talking about is to believers.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: Like, I mean, he talked about this in chapter five.
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm not talking about sinners.
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: We're not we're not responsible for them.
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: We are responsible for believers, though.
- 20:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: Like we judge together as a follower of Christ.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: And it got even brought up last time, and I would love to hear you guys' thoughts where me and Pastor Sean talked about a time where we had someone come to us and say, Hey, I'm struggling in this area.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: And my first question is always, Who am I talking to?
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: Am I talking to a follower of Jesus?
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: Or am I talking to someone who's just struggling with something who Jesus isn't even on the radar?
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: That to me is an important question to lead with because I want to know who I'm talking to.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: If some, if it's someone saying, I desire to follow Jesus, we got to talk about if I'm talking to someone who's like, I don't care about your Bible, I don't care, that's a totally different conversation.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: I don't get the right to go, well, you're wrong.
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: I I don't, it's not my responsibility.
- 21:37SPEAKER_01: However, if you were inside, as a as a fellow believer, and this is what Paul's addressing, as a fellow believer, we have a we have a responsibility, an accountability.
- 21:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: And that's Matthew 18, too, which we we also talked about.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: Doesn't, I mean, when someone's offended you, do you go to them?
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: If if you've won them over, you've won them back.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: If not, do you take another?
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: Thirdly, if they don't Do you bring it before the church?
- 22:01SPEAKER_02: Nobody brings it before the church anymore.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: I mean, that was chapter five.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: Obviously, he brought it before the congregation.
- 22:10SPEAKER_02: I'm saying, I bet you in the old like the old days, those days, but like even like the 20s, 30s.
- 22:17SPEAKER_02: I'd want to know, like I bet they did it well.
- 22:19SPEAKER_02: And somewhere along the line, we just face it out.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: I think somewhere along the line it wasn't done well.
- 22:24SPEAKER_02: Well, right.
- 22:25SPEAKER_02: Well, that yes.
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: I was gonna say because of you get people who are not.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: Or someone goes, Oh, that was awkward.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: I don't want to do that again.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they start throwing bias in there.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, which is addressed a lot in First Corinthians two, also.
- 22:39SPEAKER_02: But that's true.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: A lot of bias.
- 22:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:43SPEAKER_02: Which also I think um in my commentary, he does talk a lot about how it could have been like elite Corinthians suing poor, like uh the status-wise.
- 22:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 22:57SPEAKER_02: And so then, because they're not all suing each other.
- 22:59SPEAKER_02: It's like a group of them, you know.
- 23:02SPEAKER_02: And so him, and it even says he says, why not put the poor?
- 23:07SPEAKER_02: I mean, it doesn't say in scripture, this way he says in the commentary, put the poor as the wise judge judges, because they would not have as much bias as the people that were morally.
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: It's like, oh, that's interesting.
- 23:19SPEAKER_01: But he does say in verse nine, don't you realize that those who do wrong they're not gonna inherit the kingdom of God?
- 23:25SPEAKER_01: Don't fool yourselves.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: Those who indulge in, and then he gets into, you know, other things, you know, including, yes, the sexual sin, but also greedy people, drunkards, abusive, cheating people.
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: None of those will inherit the kingdom of God.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: So and he and he's like, Listen, some of you people, you understand this, because you once were like that, but you were cleansed, and then he goes kind of into what you know Jesus did, and then he you know obviously talks about sexual sin.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: Um I think one of the I don't know things that I wonder about is you know, like what what is it that causes us to then we've talked about why we don't say something.
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: What would cause us to say something?
- 24:09SPEAKER_02: That's a good question.
- 24:10SPEAKER_02: If someone's gonna get hurt, I'll probably say something.
- 24:15SPEAKER_02: I'm not a very say or something kind of gal.
- 24:19SPEAKER_02: But if someone's like gonna get hurt, I will I would step in.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: Like hurt physically or like their emotions or their heart.
- 24:25SPEAKER_01: Or spiritually.
- 24:27SPEAKER_04: I've noticed seasons where I am more bold to guide and encourage and say things, is when I'm fresh myself, like in the word, when I feel like my mind has intentionally been connected and more like Jesus.
- 24:44SPEAKER_04: And I'll be honest, this summer I'm having a little bit of a dry season just in my head and my routine.
- 24:49SPEAKER_04: Like I'm just I it's more it's been a little bit more of a chore for me the past like couple weeks.
- 24:54SPEAKER_04: But um I think when I feel the most like filled and refreshed myself, I do feel more confident in sharing and like trying to draw people in and even reaching out.
- 25:07SPEAKER_04: Like right now, I'm just sort of like, I should probably connect with that person, but I just kind of don't see the complexity for it.
- 25:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but I I do feel more, I don't I know the phrase like on fire can go different ways, but sometimes I feel more on fire to like pursue and connect and like, hey, like this might I wanted to hear your thoughts about this.
- 25:25SPEAKER_04: Try to call out a little more, I guess.
- 25:29SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 25:29SPEAKER_04: So maybe the more Christ-like we become, the more we're yeah, I think the more we handle it like Christ would.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:37SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 25:37SPEAKER_01: Because I think there's I think there's always a temptation for self-righteousness.
- 25:42SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah.
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: Right with anything, right?
- 25:43SPEAKER_01: Like if all of a sudden I'm on this certain diet, I'm like, I'm self-righteous about why aren't you on this diet?
- 25:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, everyone should know this about you.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you're not fasting?
- 25:51SPEAKER_01: Like what is going on?
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: Which is why I like when when we do things together and we're automatically, hey, we're all in this, we're all studying this, we're all not eating this, we're all, you know, fasting.
- 26:02SPEAKER_01: It's it's easier to, but I think there's a level of competition to always be self-righteous about whatever it is the Lord is teaching us that this should be.
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: I think what Paul's addressing is while it is like not everybody, it's a reminder that it's it's happening enough that I need to say something.
- 26:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 26:20SPEAKER_01: But again, I think more than any time that I've ever read Corinthians, now I'm realizing how difficult this would have been when you're not there.
- 26:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 26:30SPEAKER_01: Like the communication side of not being there and hearing about it from a letter and then writing a letter.
- 26:39SPEAKER_01: So it's not even like that's why it can be forceful.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: I think I'm okay.
- 26:43SPEAKER_01: I I can get it because I've been in that place where it's like, well, how did you communicate that?
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: I mean, we're we were talking at the camp that I did, and it was like, well, how did you communicate with your coach?
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: Well, you had to call him on the phone.
- 26:56SPEAKER_04: Oh, wow.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: They're talking about rule changes and stuff like that.
- 26:59SPEAKER_01: And they're like, How did you get out that there was rule changes?
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: Because we were talking about some of the soccer rule changes when I was in high school.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: It took like a season for people to go, hold on, when did that become a rule?
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: Oh, did you not read it from the mail that you got?
- 27:12SPEAKER_04: Like the paper mail?
- 27:13SPEAKER_01: Like the phone call, your coach should have gotten a phone call, and the that rule change is like, where did you see it back then?
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: Versus now I can just look at it.
- 27:23SPEAKER_01: Oh, I got a text, here it is.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: And it's like super easy now.
- 27:26SPEAKER_01: I gotta take a class online and I see all the rule changes.
- 27:29SPEAKER_01: Back then, that communication was way different.
- 27:32SPEAKER_01: So when I think about Paul writing these letters, I'm like, man, when when did everybody hear it?
- 27:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: Different times.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: Together it was red.
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: I know it was red, but like someone missed that day.
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: Or like you know what I mean?
- 27:43SPEAKER_01: Like, how did he find out?
- 27:44SPEAKER_02: Well, and how much time has passed since I think it's true, is probably why there's so much like chaos happening too.
- 27:50SPEAKER_02: So the first letter happened, and then we get they like misinterpret what he's teaching, and then they he gets the report hey, everybody in Chloe's house is jacked up and we need help now.
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: We need another letter, Paul.
- 28:04SPEAKER_02: But it's like the misinterpretation of letters too is so even today's world text messages, you can't really interpret what people mean, or so it's kind of interesting.
- 28:13SPEAKER_02: Like, we still do this today.
- 28:15SPEAKER_02: Well, we think, how could you misinterpret it?
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: It seems so black and white.
- 28:18SPEAKER_01: I would have rather preached this way.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna just put it in writing, someone else read it.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: Read it.
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: It's great.
- 28:22SPEAKER_02: But it's like, well, what does he mean?
- 28:24SPEAKER_02: Well, does he mean this?
- 28:25SPEAKER_02: Well, is there room for error?
- 28:28SPEAKER_02: Is there room for like grace there?
- 28:31SPEAKER_02: Like it's kind of hard to do.
- 28:32SPEAKER_01: Yes, because he didn't have to, he doesn't have to compare like we do, right?
- 28:35SPEAKER_01: He he doesn't know this is like the other side.
- 28:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he doesn't know technology side, he doesn't know quickly receiving information.
- 28:44SPEAKER_01: He only knows this side, which is awesome, right?
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: This is like a lot of kids.
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: They don't they don't understand uh life without cell phone or life without just calling my mom or checking on where my mom is.
- 28:55SPEAKER_01: I don't have to call her anymore.
- 28:56SPEAKER_01: I just check life through they don't understand the other side of the You have your mom on Life 360?
- 29:00SPEAKER_01: No, I'm I'm sure it's weird.
- 29:02SPEAKER_02: We don't.
- 29:02SPEAKER_02: I want my mom on life 360, though.
- 29:04SPEAKER_02: I didn't want to know where she is.
- 29:06SPEAKER_02: I have my parents on we don't have our parents on it.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: Casey won't let me know.
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: Won't let me put her on mine.
- 29:11SPEAKER_02: Well she doesn't that's a red flag.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: I'm joking.
- 29:16SPEAKER_02: She's probably somewhere looking at pet bring home.
- 29:19SPEAKER_02: If my kids would be like, are you at Starbucks?
- 29:21SPEAKER_02: Why did you go to Starbucks without me?
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they don't even text you anymore.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: Where are you?
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: They just look at my 360.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: No, I don't know.
- 29:27SPEAKER_01: She'd be in an antique store somewhere.
- 29:29SPEAKER_01: I know, that's why.
- 29:30SPEAKER_01: She doesn't really want to know.
- 29:31SPEAKER_01: And what's funny is you know, right?
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: I'm like, why did you pause your location today?
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: But here's the thing, here's my go-to.
- 29:37SPEAKER_02: I mean no wow.
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: Midori has her on our phone, so I just go to Midori and say, hey, where's your mom?
- 29:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: And then we're both texting her.
- 29:44SPEAKER_00: What are you doing there?
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: How'd you know I was there?
- 29:46SPEAKER_00: Now she doesn't even do that anymore.
- 29:48SPEAKER_00: She's like, Midori told it.
- 29:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:50SPEAKER_02: I don't actually really look.
- 29:51SPEAKER_02: Sometimes I'll look and see if Jamie's left church.
- 29:53SPEAKER_02: I'm like, seriously, why are you not left yet?
- 29:55SPEAKER_02: So we just love talking to him.
- 29:57SPEAKER_02: Other than that, I don't even look.
- 29:59SPEAKER_01: No, most times she looks at him, why is he on his way home already?
- 30:04SPEAKER_02: No, never.
- 30:06SPEAKER_04: That never happens.
- 30:07SPEAKER_04: Never ever happens.
- 30:09SPEAKER_04: I'm always looking to see is Aiden coming home yet.
- 30:11SPEAKER_04: Please.
- 30:12SPEAKER_04: I'm like, kids, dad's almost home.
- 30:13SPEAKER_04: They're outside.
- 30:15SPEAKER_04: Go wait for him.
- 30:16SPEAKER_04: That's awesome.
- 30:17SPEAKER_04: Well, good, good chatting.
- 30:19SPEAKER_04: Good chatting with you guys.
- 30:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you too.
- 30:22SPEAKER_04: You too.
- 30:23SPEAKER_01: Do you want to pray for us?
- 30:25SPEAKER_04: I do.
- 30:25SPEAKER_04: I would love to pray for us.
- 30:26SPEAKER_01: Great job leading this.
- 30:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, good job.
- 30:28SPEAKER_00: Oh, thanks.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: Driving the bus.
- 30:30SPEAKER_04: Thanks.
- 30:31SPEAKER_04: All right, here we go.
- 30:33SPEAKER_04: Lord Jesus, thank you so much for this church.
- 30:36SPEAKER_04: Thank you for your word.
- 30:37SPEAKER_04: And God, I pray that you would just continue to use these words to um just compel us and encourage us to say what we need to say, to be life giving, to be encouraging, and to be corrective when it's necessary, when it's important, when it's kingdom purpose.
- 30:57SPEAKER_04: And so we just give all of this to you and um yeah, we just thank you.
- 31:02SPEAKER_04: In Jesus' name, Amen.
