- 0:03Josh: Google just wrapped up their star-studded presentation announcing all of their
- 0:07Josh: new devices including their new phone and their AI strategy that they're planning
- 0:10Josh: to go forward with for the rest of the year.
- 0:12Josh: As I'm watching this episode or as I'm watching this unveiling event I
- 0:15Josh: could not help but think this was everything Apple promised
- 0:18Josh: me a full year ago that they didn't deliver on
- 0:21Josh: and it makes me a little frustrated because these features are amazing and
- 0:24Josh: we're getting into all of them we'll talk about everything that was announced today but there's
- 0:27Josh: things that i actually really want in my phone it turns your pixel or your smartphone
- 0:31Josh: whatever phone you have into a proactive assistant so now your phone pulls the
- 0:35Josh: right info before you ask it speaks other languages in your own voice on phone
- 0:38Josh: calls it coaches you to take photos in real time and turn you into a photographer
- 0:42Josh: gives you a fitness coach adapts to your sleep and travel,
- 0:46Josh: there's so many amazing features they unveiled and as i'm watching this i can't
- 0:49Josh: help but think this is everything i was promised but didn't get from apple so
- 0:52Josh: you just you just finished watching this. What are your first impressions?
- 0:55Josh: What do you think after seeing this presentation from Google?
- 0:57Ejaaz: Google just killed Apple at their game, consumer mobile devices.
- 1:04Ejaaz: I watched this stream and I consistently just had this one term keep popping
- 1:11Ejaaz: up in my head, PPAI, Practical Personalized AI. Trademarked, I just came up with that.
- 1:19Ejaaz: And what I mean by this is the theme of Google's new phone is very much not
- 1:27Ejaaz: just a new hardware device, but something that's deeply ingrained with AI at the consumer level.
- 1:34Ejaaz: You've heard this term many times before, personalized AI, you know,
- 1:38Ejaaz: something that intuitively understands what you want, that predicts what you're
- 1:42Ejaaz: going to do, that serves you up information before you even think of it, right?
- 1:47Ejaaz: But we've never really seen this materialize very well.
- 1:50Ejaaz: But that's what Google's going after. And I have to say, Josh,
- 1:54Ejaaz: They're doing it in a really functional way.
- 1:57Ejaaz: Now, you mentioned earlier on that there's a bunch of features that you would use.
- 2:01Ejaaz: I think that's the sense that I got as well. The features that they all listed,
- 2:06Ejaaz: and I'm about to jump into some of my favorites,
- 2:08Ejaaz: are things that I feel hundreds of millions
- 2:11Ejaaz: of people specifically those that use android devices
- 2:15Ejaaz: that run google software are going to use
- 2:18Ejaaz: um i'll give you an example there was this one thing called
- 2:21Ejaaz: um magic magic cue or magical cue
- 2:25Ejaaz: i think it was magic cue magic cue imagine this when you are on text using an
- 2:31Ejaaz: apple iphone you can typically get something known as predictive text right
- 2:35Ejaaz: it kind of like predicts certain words that you might say most of the time it's
- 2:40Ejaaz: wrong and I think like 15% of my friends actually use it
- 2:44Ejaaz: Google's done exactly this, but it's for every single app that you might use
- 2:49Ejaaz: on Google, which is just insane, right?
- 2:52Ejaaz: So it doesn't just predict what to respond to in a text.
- 2:57Ejaaz: It grathers all the context that is needed for that conversation itself.
- 3:00Ejaaz: So in one of the examples, Jimmy Fallon, who is actually the host of this event,
- 3:05Ejaaz: was scrolling through his phone, through his emails, and he picks out an email
- 3:09Ejaaz: that he receives from a guy called Rick.
- 3:11Ejaaz: And Rick is asking him a question saying, dude, where are we going out tonight?
- 3:16Ejaaz: Like they obviously made plans before, they were having a little chat somewhere
- 3:20Ejaaz: else, presumably on text and Jimmy hadn't responded.
- 3:23Ejaaz: And as you can see on Jimmy's phone here, if you look down to the bottom right,
- 3:28Ejaaz: for those who are watching, there's
- 3:29Ejaaz: a tiny bubble that has the restaurant suggestion already pre-prepared.
- 3:33Ejaaz: Now, Apple iPhone predictive text doesn't know this, would never know this.
- 3:38Ejaaz: It doesn't read your emails. It doesn't read your calendar. it has no idea.
- 3:42Ejaaz: But this magic cue is basically Google's Gemini AI embedded across your entire
- 3:48Ejaaz: phone, which I just thought was super cool.
- 3:50Ejaaz: Later on in this live demo, they then show a follow-up response from Rick,
- 3:57Ejaaz: who says, are you sure it's this restaurant? Can you like confirm with them somehow?
- 4:01Ejaaz: And Jimmy goes back on his like email, he's reading this, and then suddenly
- 4:05Ejaaz: a reply pops up on his phone, which has the number of the restaurant.
- 4:12Ejaaz: So without doing anything, he just taps the number and it starts calling the restaurant.
- 4:17Ejaaz: And Josh, do you know when you call someone on your iPhone? I know you have
- 4:20Ejaaz: an iPhone, I have an iPhone. It just shows like a bunch of buttons, right?
- 4:24Ejaaz: Loudspeaker mode, switch the callers or whatever. It doesn't really show you
- 4:28Ejaaz: something functional, right?
- 4:30Ejaaz: In this live demo, when he tapped the phone number to call the restaurant,
- 4:35Ejaaz: it had popped up his open table reservation on the phone screen as it was ringing.
- 4:41Ejaaz: And to someone like me that uses my phone pretty incessantly,
- 4:46Ejaaz: that calls a lot of people day in, day out, that minor change doesn't seem so
- 4:51Ejaaz: minor when it's so fluidly integrated into my user experience.
- 4:55Ejaaz: I just thought this was like one of my favorite feature updates.
- 4:58Josh: Yeah, this is cool. And like, why is this cool? Why does this matter?
- 5:01Josh: It's because this is the only private tech stack that actually does this promise.
- 5:06Josh: So in the case of the iPhone, their promise was, hey, we're going to we have
- 5:10Josh: this new chip. It's built just for Apple intelligence.
- 5:12Josh: We are going to deliver an experience that pulls all of your private data on
- 5:16Josh: your phone and gets aggregated in the small model that runs locally on the device.
- 5:19Josh: And then it could serve you these suggestions, just like we're seeing Google do right now.
- 5:23Josh: The problem is that doesn't exist. And our only options, like we've discussed
- 5:26Josh: in previous episodes, are going to the cloud to offload all of our data to give to somebody else.
- 5:31Josh: So in this particular example I'm thinking about, I'm thinking about ChatGPT and OpenAI.
- 5:36Josh: When I want to connect my Google Calendar and my Gmail, which are two things
- 5:39Josh: I use a lot, well, now it just goes all to OpenAI servers. And they have full
- 5:43Josh: access to all of my information.
- 5:44Josh: And I only get to integrate my Gmail and my calendar.
- 5:48Josh: So if there are any other applications that give helpful context.
- 5:51Josh: OpenAI just can't see that. It doesn't have access to the rest of the stuff on my phone.
- 5:54Josh: The cool thing about Google is it runs all of this locally on your device,
- 5:58Josh: fully synchronously across all of the applications you have.
- 6:01Josh: This was the promise Apple made. This is the promise that the Apple failed on.
- 6:05Josh: And there are a few cool technical things that happened to enable this, which is a new chip.
- 6:10Josh: It's called the Tensor G5 chip. This is like the cool new chip that goes into
- 6:13Josh: this phone. And basically what it is, is three nanometer processor,
- 6:16Josh: super, super tiny, really fast.
- 6:17Josh: And it's just really fast and beefy. and it enables 20 fully on-device AI features
- 6:23Josh: at launch, which means super low latency. You don't have to ping a server and
- 6:27Josh: tons of privacy because you don't have to ping a server.
- 6:29Josh: So all of this gets done locally on device. It's all really fast.
- 6:32Josh: It all just kind of works the way that we were promised again,
- 6:36Josh: but doesn't as an iPhone user. Clearly, I'm very frustrated. Good for you, Google.
- 6:40Josh: This was not the only cool new AI feature they showed. My favorite.
- 6:44Josh: I use my phone as a camera a lot.
- 6:47Josh: I love photography. I love taking photos. they had some fantastic new photo
- 6:52Josh: features for the camera that I want to get into the first one.
- 6:55Josh: Being editing by text. So this was a really cool example.
- 6:59Josh: So what we're seeing here is podcaster Alex Cooper. She took a video with Jimmy
- 7:02Josh: Fallon backstage and it was kind of a crappy photo.
- 7:05Josh: It didn't look good. And in fact, this is what most of my photos look like when I take them.
- 7:08Josh: They're just, they're not that great. A lot of the magic is in post-production
- 7:11Josh: and editing the photo, but it takes a lot of technical skill.
- 7:14Josh: And when I want to teach my friends how to edit a photo, it just doesn't go very well.
- 7:18Josh: So what she's doing in this example is she's saying, hey, I just want you to
- 7:21Josh: fix the lighting and make the image just kind of look a little more aligned instead of crooked.
- 7:26Josh: And you see the before and after on the screen right here. It's pretty incredible.
- 7:30Josh: This is exactly what I would do as a professional editor that would take me
- 7:34Josh: a couple minutes to do in Adobe Lightroom.
- 7:36Josh: And it's just done by typing into your photos app, what you want to change, and then it changes it.
- 7:41Josh: And to me, that's magic because it simplifies the process, the hardest process
- 7:45Josh: about photography, which is the actual editing of your crappy photos.
- 7:49Josh: Most people, listen, this is the truth.
- 7:51Josh: You don't always take the best photos out of the camera. You need to edit them.
- 7:53Josh: Now anybody could edit them. And this is all powered by AI locally on device.
- 7:57Josh: This was cool. This was like a really exciting feature for me. Okay, okay, okay.
- 8:00Ejaaz: So I completely agree with you. And I have a sister that is just as obsessed
- 8:05Ejaaz: as you, Josh, with taking pictures and like getting the right kind of like filter and gradient.
- 8:10Ejaaz: I showed this to her. Like I sent this like a clip of this to her like five minutes ago.
- 8:14Ejaaz: And she was just like, holy shit, this is going to change my life.
- 8:17Ejaaz: I don't need to spend hours editing my pics anymore.
- 8:19Ejaaz: That's good for you. But what about me?
- 8:22Ejaaz: What about me that has no directive sense in terms of taking photos,
- 8:26Ejaaz: that has a girlfriend that's like, you know, trying to film content for like all her food stuff?
- 8:31Ejaaz: I am going to be honest with you, Josh, I'm like a low IQ caveman when it comes to this stuff.
- 8:36Ejaaz: But they launched a feature that would help me with doing that.
- 8:41Ejaaz: It's something called camera assist. And we're actually seeing this on the video right now where...
- 8:48Ejaaz: Alex Cooper is basically trying to get a good shot of Jimmy Fallon,
- 8:52Ejaaz: who is seated on a blue cow right now.
- 8:55Ejaaz: And what you can see in the live demo is that the AI has created a bunch of
- 9:02Ejaaz: example shots from her screen recording that she's having right now,
- 9:06Ejaaz: like before she captures an image,
- 9:08Ejaaz: prompting her of what kind of angle she can take for the shot of Jimmy.
- 9:13Ejaaz: So it's talking to her in real time. And so she selects one.
- 9:16Ejaaz: She's like, I like this close-up.
- 9:18Ejaaz: How do I get this close-up image? And then it starts guiding her in real time
- 9:22Ejaaz: as she moves the camera around.
- 9:23Ejaaz: It's telling her, hey, you should lower the camera maybe about 20 inches.
- 9:28Ejaaz: So you can see her. She's about to walk forward.
- 9:30Ejaaz: There we go. She's walking forward and now she's starting to crouch, right?
- 9:34Ejaaz: And then it's telling her, line it up with his eyes. And there's a bunch of
- 9:37Ejaaz: other instructions that are happening in real time.
- 9:39Ejaaz: All I'm going to say is if I had access to something like this,
- 9:42Ejaaz: I would be probably on the level that you are, Josh, when it comes to video
- 9:45Ejaaz: and camera production. I just thought this was super cool.
- 9:48Josh: No, this is amazing. And it kind of it inverts or it solves a serious problem
- 9:52Josh: I have, which is helping my friends take good photos.
- 9:54Josh: Again, they asked me to edit the photos. They asked me to take the photos.
- 9:57Josh: But now this is a cool thing. So the quick and dirty process is basically you
- 10:01Josh: point a camera at a subject.
- 10:02Josh: It gives you a series of different suggestions. You pick the one that you like the most,
- 10:05Josh: and then it just tells you where to move your camera to do it and how
- 10:08Josh: to change the settings and the focal length and the right proportions of
- 10:11Josh: where to place the head and it just makes sense it
- 10:14Josh: feels really nice and because it's built directly into the
- 10:17Josh: phone experience i mean granted this is a demo we don't know what the production
- 10:20Josh: software is going to look like but it seems really seamless imagine your iphone
- 10:24Josh: photo app which i assume most people on this are probably apple users because
- 10:27Josh: that's just how it is in the united states um it's just built right in and it
- 10:30Josh: has these little suggestions as you go along the top again another really cool
- 10:33Josh: use case for ai i think google in particular is really good at images and video.
- 10:38Josh: They have the entire data repository of YouTube. They have Google Photos,
- 10:42Josh: which everyone backs up their photos to.
- 10:43Josh: They've trained on a tremendous amount of visual data.
- 10:46Josh: And we're seeing the culmination of that on this very small locomotive that's
- 10:49Josh: running on the phone. And now all this revolves around the camera.
- 10:52Josh: The camera is clearly a very important part of the phone, Ejaz.
- 10:55Josh: Explain why. Like what makes the camera so critical to this new AI effort?
- 10:59Ejaaz: Maybe a hot take, but I would say 90% of the reason why people buy a new phone
- 11:04Ejaaz: is because it has a sick new camera.
- 11:07Ejaaz: And this new Google phone actually does. AI aside, I think it has like,
- 11:11Ejaaz: they quoted something like a 50 megapixel camera, Josh, which when I think back
- 11:16Ejaaz: to the first phone I had, that was like some measly 2.5 megapixel.
- 11:19Ejaaz: I thought that was super cool, but apparently I was filming on a potato.
- 11:22Ejaaz: This is just like astounding, right? But the point is, most of the people spend
- 11:27Ejaaz: their time on their phones using the camera.
- 11:29Ejaaz: And so Google was really thoughtful about how they integrate AI through the
- 11:34Ejaaz: camera. And it's not just with photos.
- 11:36Ejaaz: It's not just with how to take photos or how to edit photos, but it's what you can see
- 11:41Ejaaz: And so they announced this new feature, which is basically like a real-time AI assistant.
- 11:46Ejaaz: It's their AI model, Gemini, except you can show Gemini the world around you
- 11:50Ejaaz: now, and it can identify different things.
- 11:53Ejaaz: So say, for example, you wanted to show Gemini a problem that you're having
- 11:57Ejaaz: with your car, and you don't know what you need to do.
- 11:59Ejaaz: You can flip on and put it in your camera app.
- 12:01Ejaaz: You can start the recording session and just show the app or Gemini,
- 12:06Ejaaz: the AI model, what you're seeing, and it'll start diagnosing what's wrong with your car.
- 12:10Ejaaz: You could show a picture or video of your friend and say, what would this person
- 12:14Ejaaz: look like with kind of orange hand? It'll kind of like live edit in real time.
- 12:18Ejaaz: Or, and I really enjoyed this feature, Josh, they have like a live translation
- 12:23Ejaaz: feature, which maybe isn't necessary to do with your camera,
- 12:26Ejaaz: but it's in the realm of real time AI feedback, which is what we just described here, right?
- 12:32Ejaaz: And so they had this really cool demo of Jimmy Fallon talking to a native Spanish
- 12:39Ejaaz: speaker, I believe, backstage.
- 12:42Ejaaz: And Jimmy doesn't know how to speak Spanish at all. So he would speak English
- 12:46Ejaaz: and it would get live translated into Spanish on the other end.
- 12:51Ejaaz: What was fascinating about this was it was in his own voice. So it sounded like him.
- 12:56Ejaaz: And this worked the other way around as well. She would speak in native Spanish
- 13:00Ejaaz: and it would sound like English to Jimmy Fallon's phone in her voice.
- 13:05Ejaaz: I just think this real time AI, both from the camera sense and the translation
- 13:10Ejaaz: sense was super cool. And I would use that every day.
- 13:13Josh: Oh, yeah, me too. These were the two features I was also very excited about.
- 13:16Josh: I want to unpack a little bit. First, I have to start by the megapixel count.
- 13:20Josh: So there's this 50 megapixels. I got to defend.
- 13:22Josh: Listen, I'm upset with Apple, but we're still family. I got to stick up for my boys.
- 13:25Josh: They have 48 megapixels in this camera. It doesn't have 100 times zoom.
- 13:28Josh: Like the pixel does but there are 48 megapixels so if we're
- 13:31Josh: keeping track of megapixels very close by but i think
- 13:34Josh: the real-time ai feature is is really important to
- 13:37Josh: to mention particularly the first feature you talked about which was
- 13:40Josh: the selection of objects in a camera
- 13:42Josh: frame so if anyone ever has tried the advanced voice
- 13:46Josh: mode in chat gpt that we've mentioned a few times you're able to pull up the
- 13:49Josh: camera and the camera can kind of see what you're seeing in real time and you
- 13:52Josh: could ask questions about what the camera is seeing what it can't do is select
- 13:57Josh: specific parts of an image so let's say that you are building a desk and there's
- 14:01Josh: a bunch of screws on the floor and they're all different sizes.
- 14:04Josh: Chat gpt can kind of tell you hey you need to pick this
- 14:07Josh: screw but it can't show you which screw you need to
- 14:10Josh: pick uh this new version of google's gemini
- 14:12Josh: running on google pixel can actually do that it can
- 14:15Josh: highlight a very specific part of a visual that you're showing and it could
- 14:19Josh: actually kind of write so not only can it read but it could also now write to
- 14:22Josh: an image where it can actually add displays on top of what you're seeing and
- 14:26Josh: i think this is a really cool progression towards this mixed reality where you
- 14:30Josh: have like now these ai systems can read but also write on your mixed reality.
- 14:34Josh: You have this on glasses. You very clearly see where this is going.
- 14:36Josh: Like no one's ever been able to do this before. So that was a net new.
- 14:39Josh: That was a win. The second thing was on the translation. Like you mentioned, so cool.
- 14:43Josh: I don't know how they do this. I'm a bit skeptical because how did they get
- 14:46Josh: Jimmy's voice transcribed in real time in Spanish?
- 14:49Josh: Basically the demo, Jimmy Fallon is talking to the Spanish speaker and he says
- 14:52Josh: something, you wait maybe a quarter of a second.
- 14:54Josh: It translates in a very similar voice. And I'm curious, this is where I'm getting
- 14:57Josh: a little skeptical on the actual delivery of this because how do they get it so accurate?
- 15:02Josh: Don't normally traditionally speaking when you are training
- 15:05Josh: or when you have an ai emulate your voice it needs to
- 15:07Josh: be trained on your voice so you need to feed it a little bit of
- 15:10Josh: voice data before it actually just works like that so i'm curious what
- 15:13Josh: the actual execution of this will be like but it was incredible it
- 15:17Josh: was really really impressive and they demoed this at
- 15:20Josh: google io a little bit earlier in the year but to see it in actual
- 15:22Josh: production is cool it's like okay you're speaking
- 15:25Josh: to a foreigner and it almost translates in
- 15:28Josh: real time it's really impressive so you say something and it
- 15:32Josh: comes out in your voice vice versa so if you're speaking to a female
- 15:35Josh: it sounds just like just like a loved one if you were talking to them and
- 15:38Josh: they only speak spanish my grandma only speaks spanish i could talk to her it
- 15:41Josh: would translate live in real time that's really cool it's just like a really
- 15:44Josh: nice human connection feature of ai it's just very wholesome it's like hey now
- 15:48Josh: you can talk to a lot of really interesting people in real time and this gets
- 15:51Josh: translated into their translate app as well so now the google translate apple
- 15:55Josh: you could also just talk to people in real time in your voice.
- 15:58Josh: So these are really cool features of real time AI.
- 16:01Josh: And you could kind of see, I mean, again, they're building this stack for a
- 16:04Josh: world in which we are going to be wearing some sort of visual layer on top of our phone.
- 16:09Josh: So we don't have the phone, we have visual layer, it can transcribe stuff in
- 16:13Josh: real time, we could see augmented overlays in real time.
- 16:16Josh: It's like all very clearly progressing towards this, the center point,
- 16:19Josh: which is the glasses, the spatial reality world.
- 16:22Josh: And these are all really good steps in the right direction. This is cool stuff.
- 16:25Ejaaz: All I can think about is Google has completely leapfrogged Apple here.
- 16:31Ejaaz: You know, you mentioned, you just don't know how Google Translate has gotten that good.
- 16:38Ejaaz: I remember watching a video two months ago. We actually, I think,
- 16:42Ejaaz: spoke about it on this show where it was a live Google Meets and they were demonstrating
- 16:47Ejaaz: V1 of this translation feature.
- 16:48Ejaaz: And back then it was working in practical cases. So I presume it's only gotten
- 16:53Ejaaz: better since then, which I just think is awesome.
- 16:56Ejaaz: And I can't help but think that Google was always behind Apple in the consumer kind of race.
- 17:04Ejaaz: Yeah, you know, they launched a bunch of phones. And to be honest,
- 17:08Ejaaz: their cameras have been better than Apple for a while.
- 17:10Ejaaz: Sorry to hate on Apple, Josh, but it's just been true.
- 17:14Ejaaz: Those are fighting words, but I think it was true. But no one really cared because
- 17:18Ejaaz: the software stack of Apple was just so good.
- 17:21Ejaaz: It was so addictive. The consumer layer was something that you just didn't want to kind of leave.
- 17:27Ejaaz: But now Google has somehow caught up with them whilst building a completely
- 17:33Ejaaz: new sector to integrate into all their devices, which is AI.
- 17:37Ejaaz: And so I've kind of run out of excuses for Apple.
- 17:41Ejaaz: Not that I had many to start off with, but I just don't know where to kind of
- 17:47Ejaaz: go from here because Apple has lost a bunch of their AI talent to meta, open AI, and Anthropic.
- 17:53Ejaaz: And there's no need to get into that. But I don't know. I guess I'm just disappointed.
- 17:57Josh: If Google has killed Apple, are you switching? Are you going to Team Pixel?
- 18:01Ejaaz: Oh, God, such a good gut test. No.
- 18:06Ejaaz: And the only reason why I say that, and maybe this is pathetic,
- 18:11Ejaaz: but all my friends use Apple. and so I feel like I still want to see the blue
- 18:16Ejaaz: bubble appear on my phone.
- 18:18Ejaaz: I'm hating on the green bubble that I know is of an Android user, right? But if the
- 18:25Ejaaz: AI integration is seamless enough for me to kind of like, you know, like 10x my lifestyle.
- 18:31Ejaaz: Like if I don't need to text as much, if I don't need to look at my phone as
- 18:35Ejaaz: much, if I don't need to search for the right kinds of details as much,
- 18:38Ejaaz: if Google can kind of like compound that over the next couple of phones,
- 18:43Ejaaz: might I say, and that might be still a year and a half to maybe two year period,
- 18:47Ejaaz: there's potential for not just me, but a bunch of my friends as well to convert.
- 18:52Ejaaz: What about you? are you still diehard apple or how are you feeling here
- 18:55Josh: I have a very simple answer to this one it is hell
- 18:58Josh: no i am staying with apple till the day that i die i am obsessed with
- 19:01Josh: apple i will not leave the ecosystem till death do us part i am
- 19:04Josh: a believer to the end um i just they make such
- 19:08Josh: unbelievable products their ecosystem is so
- 19:10Josh: rich it is so cohesive everything works together
- 19:13Josh: it's all very elegantly designed it is beautiful system
- 19:17Josh: inside and out i love it they totally screwed up the software
- 19:20Josh: it is an abomination that's okay for me at least like the same way that for
- 19:24Josh: a very long time i use my apple iphone with google applications i use gmail
- 19:28Josh: i use google calendar i use chrome um i believe that that will just continue
- 19:33Josh: where now i'll just use open ai and that'll be my agent that sits on top of my smart device well.
- 19:38Ejaaz: Here's a hot take maybe it's not the phones we should be talking about josh
- 19:43Ejaaz: maybe it's a new ai hardware device
- 19:46Josh: Right and we don't need everything uh-huh okay.
- 19:48Ejaaz: We don't need to get into what this might be, but I'm talking different form factor.
- 19:53Ejaaz: Maybe it's something that listens
- 19:54Ejaaz: more, that has a million cameras around it, but that is more subtle,
- 19:57Ejaaz: that doesn't permeate your eyes and visuals as much, that you don't have to
- 20:02Ejaaz: pick up and out of your phone like an archaic caveman of the technological past.
- 20:07Ejaaz: And it's something that's just there.
- 20:09Ejaaz: In that world, where there's a new AI official software or open software,
- 20:15Ejaaz: a new stack to kind of interact with this thing, maybe, maybe Google or another
- 20:21Ejaaz: company that we've never even heard of yet that we haven't even spoken about
- 20:24Ejaaz: on this show takes the lead.
- 20:26Josh: Or even OpenAI. I mean, they have their hardware device designed by the guy
- 20:30Josh: who designed the iPhone.
- 20:31Josh: So if there is ever a contender to compete, it is OpenAI. They're not going for the smartphone.
- 20:35Josh: They're going for a secondary device to the smartphone. The battle will be won
- 20:39Josh: on this next generation of hardware, whatever it may be.
- 20:42Josh: I know a lot of companies, Apple included, are going for the visual game,
- 20:45Josh: the spatial reality where they'll have glasses and goggles.
- 20:48Josh: Meta's working on this. Google's working on this. Apple, basically every major
- 20:52Josh: hardware manufacturer.
- 20:53Josh: I would imagine OpenAI probably is at least considering this in addition to
- 20:56Josh: making their sole hardware product.
- 20:58Josh: But what we're going to start to see is, I mean, I'm a diehard Apple fan in
- 21:03Josh: this current ecosystem.
- 21:04Josh: So in a world where screens and solid displays, like basically rectangles with
- 21:09Josh: either keyboards or not keyboards, like I'm thinking a MacBook,
- 21:12Josh: my iPhone, my AirPods, in a world where these devices dominate, I will not leave Apple.
- 21:16Josh: I love the ecosystem, it goes very deep. It is beautiful.
- 21:19Josh: In a world where these things become less valuable, in a world where more people
- 21:24Josh: aren't really using smartphones, aren't really using laptops,
- 21:27Josh: a lot of the compute get abstracted away to this spatial layer.
- 21:30Josh: If there's a better product, we're going to have to reconsider this.
- 21:33Josh: I mean, we've kind of reached the end of the smartphone era where iPhones really
- 21:38Josh: every year, they get marginally better.
- 21:40Josh: There's nothing super interesting. The camera gets a little better,
- 21:42Josh: processor gets a little better.
- 21:43Josh: Now the war is totally fought on the software side i
- 21:47Josh: mean we've tapped out the physical form factor here we are fighting on software
- 21:50Josh: and ai is very clearly the software lead and
- 21:53Josh: apple is clearly following behind so they're not they're not in great shape
- 21:57Josh: google's cooking but also still i have no interest in getting their phone so
- 22:01Josh: apple really has like a death grip that they really have to royally screw up
- 22:06Josh: to to lose and i guess we're just gonna have to see how this plays out yeah.
- 22:10Ejaaz: I'll take the the other side of that coin flip uh i i think apple is the weakest
- 22:15Ejaaz: that it's ever been and i think if there's ever going to be a kill shot it'll
- 22:20Ejaaz: be sometime in the next couple of years um i agree with you on the form factor point though um
- 22:26Ejaaz: Just this week, all Meta could talk about was these new glasses that they're going to be launching.
- 22:34Ejaaz: Supposedly, it's going to be super cheap and be way cooler and better than their
- 22:38Ejaaz: Meta AR glasses that they released
- 22:40Ejaaz: a couple of months ago. They're talking about a new wristband thing.
- 22:43Ejaaz: I'm hearing about a bunch of different companies that are going to be trying
- 22:46Ejaaz: different kinds of form factors. I definitely think that's going to be the case.
- 22:50Ejaaz: Bringing it back to google and all
- 22:52Ejaaz: their new ai features josh you and
- 22:55Ejaaz: i spend way too much time in the gym um i
- 22:58Ejaaz: don't know for better or for worse but i know
- 23:01Ejaaz: for most of the time um sometimes we get
- 23:04Ejaaz: bored of our workout or we are obsessed with tracking different metrics around
- 23:08Ejaaz: our health right it's love the inside and outside of the gym right i know you
- 23:13Ejaaz: and i track things like kind of like heart rate monitoring sleep scores and
- 23:19Ejaaz: health you know um how much hydration we're getting a number of different things look at this
- 23:23Josh: I got an aura ring in my watch on the same hand i'm tracking.
- 23:26Ejaaz: Everything there you go there you go absolute health junkie over here right
- 23:31Ejaaz: um but sometimes it's hard to coalesce and condense all of that down to like
- 23:37Ejaaz: some singular helpful advice
- 23:40Ejaaz: more so in real time. Well, Google, as you can see on our screen here,
- 23:45Ejaaz: Announced a new feature that is essentially like an AI personal coach or health fitness instructor.
- 23:52Ejaaz: And it's connected in this live demo to Google's watch, which is,
- 23:58Ejaaz: I think they released a new smartwatch as well, which is kind of similar to
- 24:01Ejaaz: the Apple iWatch, except, you know, it has a bunch of Android features here.
- 24:06Ejaaz: So, you know, you can do the things like measuring your heart rate,
- 24:09Ejaaz: your pulse rate, It can like track your calories, see how far you've run,
- 24:13Ejaaz: GPS location, all that kind of stuff.
- 24:15Ejaaz: But it kind of integrates it into everything else as well, right?
- 24:18Ejaaz: So let's say you have a Whoop that's connected to your Android device or you
- 24:22Ejaaz: have the Eight Sleep app on your phone.
- 24:24Ejaaz: It now can like read all of these different types of data sets and feed you
- 24:30Ejaaz: information around, you know, whether you're fit enough to go for that intense
- 24:35Ejaaz: run that you'd plan to do today.
- 24:37Ejaaz: Or if you should do a wait session versus some random hit or cardio session
- 24:42Ejaaz: that you had planned for that day.
- 24:44Ejaaz: They had this really cool score. I forgot what it was called.
- 24:46Ejaaz: I think it was called a readiness score, which is kind of like an overall factor
- 24:50Ejaaz: or health assessment every day when you wake up to kind of like figure out what
- 24:54Ejaaz: might be the best for you.
- 24:55Ejaaz: And I personally love this as someone that kind of like wants to live beyond
- 24:59Ejaaz: the whatever average age of a human is.
- 25:02Ejaaz: I love this. What are your takes, Josh?
- 25:04Josh: Yeah, I wonder how this is all gonna work.
- 25:07Josh: Also this this doesn't feel totally novel to me i mean
- 25:10Josh: apple earlier wwdc announced workout buddy for
- 25:13Josh: ios 26 which is coming out next month which is kind
- 25:16Josh: of similar to this we have the aura ring which gives
- 25:19Josh: the readiness score we have the whoop which gives a lot of similar metrics even
- 25:22Josh: the apple watch has third-party apps that give similar metrics so i'm not sure
- 25:25Josh: this is anything super new or novel i think the thing you mentioned that caught
- 25:28Josh: my attention was when you said it works with other data sources that to me is
- 25:33Josh: pretty cool so if if you have an eight sleep or if you have a whoop.
- 25:36Josh: I'm guessing the data...
- 25:38Josh: Kind of gets aggregated to a single place uh that seems if that's the case that
- 25:43Josh: seems very valuable because a lot of that.
- 25:44Ejaaz: Is the case
- 25:45Josh: Yeah that's that's one app versus many and and
- 25:48Josh: i was i wouldn't think this would be true because google
- 25:51Josh: owns fitbit if you remember google actually bought fitbit which
- 25:54Josh: is a personal tracking app and i believe this is
- 25:56Josh: embedded into the fitbit app um but the
- 25:59Josh: fact that they're opening up the platform and allowing other data sources to
- 26:02Josh: happen well you're kind of getting a phenomenon like we have with
- 26:05Josh: the apple health app where the health app just kind of like takes all
- 26:08Josh: the metrics you have it in one place it's not really the best it's not
- 26:11Josh: gamified i think if they could bring that unified experience
- 26:14Josh: to the google smartphone without third-party devices that
- 26:18Josh: seems really cool like if i could turn my apple watch
- 26:21Josh: into a whoop without getting third-party apps that would
- 26:24Josh: be really exciting for me and if they're able to do that on the
- 26:27Josh: google pixel and using the google pixel watch that to me seems really cool also
- 26:31Josh: the watch is very pretty it's round instead of oval so that's like i don't know
- 26:35Josh: different it looks it has like some nice metal bands they see the shine they're
- 26:39Josh: acting on it and i guess we'll see how that compares to apple's workout buddy
- 26:43Josh: which we're getting pretty soon well.
- 26:45Ejaaz: A reminder as well um if you're worried about google
- 26:48Ejaaz: and their ai model getting access to all your
- 26:51Ejaaz: personal data it's private it's run locally so you know you don't have to worry
- 26:56Ejaaz: about any of that and as a result of that it works much quicker in real time
- 27:01Ejaaz: so that's how you can get like uh increased performance and privacy whilst you're
- 27:06Ejaaz: doing your thing which i i just think is like a all-round great theme to kind of like
- 27:10Ejaaz: seed into all of the AI products that they announced today
- 27:13Josh: On device AI this is a big day for Google
- 27:16Josh: I think that covers all of the highlights in terms of the AI stuff
- 27:19Josh: if you're interested in the hardware go check out the highlights I think
- 27:21Josh: it goes on sale for pre-order whatever if you're pre-ordering it why why don't
- 27:25Josh: you have an iPhone I honestly like tell me why tell me why I need to get rid
- 27:29Josh: of my iPhone that I am obsessed with and in love with and cannot go anywhere
- 27:32Josh: without because I'd love to hear feedback like I'm I'm open I'm open to changing
- 27:36Josh: I just don't believe you can change my mind but i think i think that probably
- 27:40Josh: covers it for the sounds like.
- 27:41Ejaaz: Josh isn't open to changing we'll see
- 27:43Josh: Listen i'm excited about a lot of these new features that was google's made
- 27:47Josh: by event today they did it live in new york city jimmy fallon was the person
- 27:51Josh: who was kind of like commentating and narrating the whole thing he was the host of it you.
- 27:54Ejaaz: Just reminded me josh including jimmy fallon alex cooper and a number of different
- 27:59Ejaaz: kind of like hosts that were entertaining was just a great strategy by google
- 28:06Josh: Because this is fine i compared it directly to.
- 28:10Ejaaz: Open ai's live stream of what is it two weeks ago which was pretty robotic but
- 28:17Ejaaz: kind of human but pretty robotic and then i go back to the masters of this the
- 28:24Ejaaz: ones that i've been hating on this entire episode,
- 28:26Ejaaz: Apple, at their WWDC event earlier this year, which I just thought was extremely
- 28:33Ejaaz: structured, forced, and just disingenuous, which really made me hate it.
- 28:38Ejaaz: But on this Google event, Jimmy Fallon was making mistakes.
- 28:42Ejaaz: And he had like his co-host correcting him being like, actually,
- 28:45Ejaaz: no, it's this phone, Jimmy, pick up this phone, you picked up the wrong phone and the wrong color.
- 28:50Ejaaz: And Jimmy was just kind of joking his way through it. And it made it way more
- 28:53Ejaaz: relatable to me, which I think is the theme that tied into all of the AI products
- 28:57Ejaaz: that they announced today. It was relatable.
- 28:58Ejaaz: It was things that I would use every day.
- 29:01Ejaaz: They weren't promising me the next new iPhone or the next new ChatGPT,
- 29:06Ejaaz: but it was something that would add use to my life today.
- 29:10Josh: Interesting okay i'm i'm a hater i i
- 29:13Josh: didn't love the way that they did this i think it
- 29:16Josh: was it's very reflective of the brand so when i when i think of an
- 29:18Josh: apple presentation it very much feels like an extension of
- 29:21Josh: the brand it's kind of like an art in itself how they present it the
- 29:24Josh: visuals are gorgeous the animations the transitions everything is
- 29:28Josh: super high touch super high polish and they
- 29:30Josh: they kind of convince you to care about
- 29:33Josh: the product in a way you otherwise wouldn't and as someone
- 29:36Josh: who is planning to buy the products that they're selling regardless i
- 29:40Josh: want to fall in love with them and they do a really good job of
- 29:43Josh: creating this world this brand extension that allows
- 29:46Josh: me to fall deeper in love with these products and really understand the
- 29:50Josh: decision making why you often hear with apple from
- 29:53Josh: the actual designers themselves versus google where
- 29:55Josh: you're kind of getting like vps of this that and the third it felt
- 29:59Josh: a little less refined a little less polished there was
- 30:01Josh: a lot of jokes it was kind of light-hearted i think it's just a testament to the
- 30:04Josh: brand my personal preference is this like really cool refined
- 30:07Josh: beautiful delivery of these like specimens of
- 30:10Josh: art and google is just kind of like hey we got this really cool
- 30:13Josh: stuff and we're just going to show you how it works and here's a comedian
- 30:16Josh: and a talk show host to kind of walk us through this fun thing and i do want
- 30:19Josh: to give him credit because he does play the dumb guy and it makes it very easy
- 30:23Josh: to explain to the dumb guy all the the smart things that the phones can do i'm
- 30:26Josh: excited for the iphone event that's happening next month because that to me
- 30:30Josh: feels like it's going to be this like really cool fun like you're watching a movie i'm.
- 30:34Ejaaz: Bearish all right good i like
- 30:37Josh: When we disagree this is perfect oh so here's another here's another thing you
- 30:40Josh: could share in the comments are your team google presentation or apple presentation
- 30:43Josh: do you want steph curry and uh jimmy fallon and,
- 30:48Josh: alex cooper on the show or do you just want like tim cook standing in his like
- 30:51Josh: his stance like this and he's like today we're announcing a.
- 30:55Ejaaz: New emoji update
- 30:56Josh: Okay we can talk about the principles of
- 30:59Josh: the features which have been an abomination they actually make
- 31:02Josh: me sick to my stomach when they stand there with the straight face and say you
- 31:05Josh: can now design and color your own emojis that drives me insane okay so i guess
- 31:10Josh: in that sense yeah apple apple kind of sucks you got it so here's the thing
- 31:13Josh: you got to match the quality of the product to the delivery and they've definitely
- 31:16Josh: I failed on that a couple of times. So yeah, there's work to be done on both sides.
- 31:21Josh: But without rambling on too long, I think that's it. That is your show.
- 31:25Josh: That is everything that happened today with the Google new announcement.
- 31:29Josh: These are the new AI features that are pretty cool.
- 31:31Josh: Check them out. Hopefully we get them sometime soon for the iPhone users,
- 31:34Josh: for the Android users who have Google Pixels. Congratulations.
- 31:37Josh: Your phone is about to get really freaking cool.
- 31:39Josh: And yeah, so I think that the theme is just like, hey, local AI,
- 31:43Josh: pretty cool. real-time AI with translations and camera operations, pretty cool.
- 31:48Josh: Doing it all privately, pretty cool. So there's like a lot of interesting things
- 31:51Josh: that happened today. And I think it's reflective of a trend that we're going to be seeing more of.
- 31:55Josh: So again, as always, if you enjoyed, please share with your friends who are
- 31:58Josh: either team Google or team Apple. I want to hear their side of the story.
- 32:02Josh: Let everyone know, please don't forget to rate us in the App Store. We fell a little bit.
- 32:07Josh: We fell a little bit. I think we're 44 now on the Spotify tech charts, and only you can save us.
- 32:12Josh: So please share, like, favorite, do all the things that you do if you enjoy
- 32:16Josh: the show and we will be back at it again with another episode very soon.
- 32:19Music: Music
