- 0:01A couple of Sundays ago, while illustrating a point from the
- 0:05Book of Revelation, I briefly mentioned a saintly man from the
- 0:10Scriptures known as Simeon, that elderly fellow who embraced the
- 0:18child Jesus in the temple. And prayfully, as we are
- 0:23celebrating the birth of Christ this week, we will devote this
- 0:27entire message to that same Simeon.
- 0:30We'll be looking more carefully at his account as he appears
- 0:35very early in the book of Luke. I became more intrigued about
- 0:40him when I realized how virtually every other Bible
- 0:44translation introduces him except for the ESV.
- 0:49When Mary and Joseph entered the temple precincts in order to
- 0:53observe the Law of Moses in dedicating their child, the
- 0:56Spirit of God presents Simeon in the following way.
- 1:02And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon.
- 1:11It's one of the first things or people that Luke tells us in his
- 1:16book to behold, as if to say, don't rush past this individual.
- 1:26Pay close attention to him. And that is what we will do
- 1:31today by the grace of God, because he is an inspiration.
- 1:37And I will tell you from the beginning the goal of this
- 1:38message for you and I to leave here with a greater sense of a
- 1:43love for Christ, to understand through this man what is
- 1:49possible for us in our sanctification, in our
- 1:52relationship with God. And there are three things, at
- 1:57least three things that we can do.
- 2:00And observing this man, three things that we can observe #1
- 2:06his passion, His passion #2 his peace, and lastly, his prophecy.
- 2:16And so we'll begin now in Luke chapter 2, beginning in verse
- 2:1925, reading a couple of verses to meditate on Simeon's passion
- 2:26as he encounters the child Jesus not too long after his own
- 2:32birth. Luke 2, verse 25.
- 2:37Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this
- 2:42man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of
- 2:47Israel. And the Holy Spirit was upon
- 2:51him. And it had been revealed to him
- 2:54by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen
- 2:59the Lord's Christ. Oh, would you pray with me
- 3:03briefly, Lord, our prayer is that you would help us see the
- 3:09Christ, help us see Christ, make him more real to each of us.
- 3:15And may it causing us to know renewed passion, fortified peace
- 3:23and worship as we understand this prophecy through the lips
- 3:27of this man that you used 2000 years ago.
- 3:30We thank you for it. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
- 3:34What a description for any man, any woman, righteous and devout.
- 3:42Now, why is the Holy Spirit telling us this about Simeon?
- 3:46Well #1 because he's going to testify about the destiny of
- 3:51this child, the Spirit of God is going to use him to identify
- 3:55this child as a long-awaited Messiah.
- 3:59And so in order for there to be credibility to his own
- 4:03testimony, we learn of his piety.
- 4:07He was trustworthy. He was acknowledged as a holy
- 4:09man. He was someone that you can
- 4:12count on. And so in preparation for what
- 4:15he is going to say, we know something about his character.
- 4:20But there's something else. The Spirit of God wants us also
- 4:23to learn a few things about true righteousness and what devotion
- 4:29looks like. And interestingly, righteousness
- 4:33and devotion in this context is connected to the inner heart,
- 4:40the hidden heart. We're told here that Simeon was
- 4:45waiting for the consolation of Israel.
- 4:51Waiting means that there was expectation.
- 4:53Waiting means that there is desire.
- 4:55Simeon desired for the comfort, the consolation, the rest, the
- 5:02deliverance of his own people. And this is connected to his
- 5:07righteousness. This feeds his devotion.
- 5:12So the eyes of this man's heart were ever watchful.
- 5:16This man down deep inside, he longed for something.
- 5:20He yearned from Messiah. He wanted to see the promises
- 5:24fulfilled. He he wanted to be in the
- 5:26presence of this King. And that is the thing that is
- 5:32highlighted about him. Surely since he was a boy, and
- 5:35throughout his years as he studied the Scriptures, this
- 5:39longing grew more and more and more.
- 5:42And surely as he and his people were living under the growing
- 5:46brutality of the Roman oppression, that ache became
- 5:49more intense. There are many things that God
- 5:54could have said about Simeon, but in his wisdom he brings to
- 5:58our attention his consuming passion.
- 6:02Why do you think that is? To teach us who God is and what
- 6:08God looks for. You see, God considers your
- 6:14desires, God takes into account your aspirations, your wishes
- 6:24and mine, and He honors US based on what he discovers about them.
- 6:30And in the case of Simeon, God gave him the privilege of not
- 6:37only seeing the Messiah, but as is common with our God, he he
- 6:43gives him more, He lets him hold the Messiah.
- 6:48And he says you will not see death until you behold the
- 6:51Lord's Christ. Imagine this.
- 6:54In a moment, we're going to see Simeon's prophecy.
- 6:57And here you have a man who is going to bless God while holding
- 7:02God. Fascinating, isn't it?
- 7:07And I want to convince, I want you to be absolutely persuaded
- 7:10today by how God actually looks at your heart and mine.
- 7:17And what he finds there will determine reward in this life
- 7:21and in the life to come. So here at the infancy of
- 7:25Christ, we are introduced to an obscure fellow.
- 7:27But now I want us to Fast forward to the death of Christ
- 7:31as we are introduced to another uncommon character.
- 7:35So we're in the gospel. Luke travel to the Gospel of
- 7:37Mark and go to the end of it in chapter 15, Mark 15.
- 7:43Look at verse 43 with me. Joseph of Arimathea, A respected
- 7:55member of the council who was also himself looking for the
- 8:00Kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the
- 8:07body of Jesus. I'm sure there are a lot of
- 8:10differences between Joseph of Arimathea and the Simeon, but
- 8:14you know what I find in my Bible?
- 8:15They shared one common desire, the manifestation of the Kingdom
- 8:19of God, one near the birth of Christ, one after the death of
- 8:24Christ. You know this Joseph impresses
- 8:27me because he was an important man in society.
- 8:31Matthew tells us he was wealthy, but his position and his
- 8:35prosperity did not diminish his longing for God's Kingdom to
- 8:41crash into the world and to take over everything, cooling his own
- 8:44estates, his own authority. And I just wonder today if there
- 8:49are people in this place who are members of great councils or
- 8:51maybe you're a part of an exclusive club, or maybe you're
- 8:54just wealthy. Can I ask you something?
- 8:57What do you strive after? What do you ultimately seek?
- 9:03Here's this Joseph, and all we're told about him is that he
- 9:07looked for the Kingdom of God, and I see something else.
- 9:12He's rewarded for it. And the same way Simeon had the
- 9:17opportunity to hold in his hands Messiah, God gave that same
- 9:21privilege to Joseph. He came into close proximity to
- 9:27Christ, and he had the honor of taking that lifeless body and
- 9:32honoring it in the best way he could and ultimately fulfilling
- 9:36a part of Isaiah 53. God cares.
- 9:42God examines what no one else sees.
- 9:47Oh, sure, we can do things, but why do we do them?
- 9:53Even good things, even spiritual things, but what do we really
- 9:57long for? Let me show you another verse.
- 10:01I listen. I really, really want to
- 10:04communicate this because it will radically change your
- 10:07relationship with Christ. When you understand that he
- 10:09looks at the heart, He looks for the heart, You will know where
- 10:12to put your focus and your energy as you seek Him and as
- 10:15you come to His word. Go to Hebrews Chapter 11 with
- 10:19me. Oh, the hall of faith, these
- 10:22wonderful men and women that are praised for their trust in God.
- 10:25And in there we have many, many golden Nuggets, and I want to
- 10:29show you one of them in Hebrews 11, verse 16, Hebrews 11/16
- 10:37reads. But as it is, they desire a
- 10:42better country, that is, a heavenly one.
- 10:47Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has
- 10:51prepared for them a city. You see that word desire there?
- 10:56It's only used a total of three times in the New Testament,
- 10:59including this instance, and it's actually found in First
- 11:03Timothy 31, and you don't have to turn there.
- 11:05It's where Paul tells Timothy if one aspires the office of an
- 11:11overseer, he desires a noble task.
- 11:15The meaning actually in the original is to reach after, to
- 11:21grab something. And So what Paul tells Timothy
- 11:27is if there's anybody who has such an intense yearning to
- 11:30apprehend the position of a pastor or an elder, that's a
- 11:34good desire. And the Holy Spirit uses that
- 11:39same word here in Hebrews 11/16 to speak of those who desire a
- 11:46better country heaven. It's a it's a yearning for
- 11:51something to become a reality. Here's what's so astounding
- 11:54about this verse. Those who inwardly, inwardly
- 11:59reach out for the manifestation of God's government, for his
- 12:05return. Those who ache and pine for his
- 12:10presence to be more real. What does he say?
- 12:13God is not ashamed to be called their God.
- 12:18Look at the Word there. Therefore, that connects the
- 12:21following thought with the previous one.
- 12:23Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God.
- 12:25Well, what did He say before? He's talking about those who
- 12:28desire a better country. I can't think of a greater
- 12:30blessing than that, that God in heaven, with all the myriad of
- 12:34angels and all these heavenly creatures, is willingly wanting
- 12:41to testify of a child of His. He belongs to me.
- 12:48Do you see what he loves? Do you see what she desires?
- 12:50More than anything, she sees this world as a wilderness.
- 12:55He's a Pilgrim. His heart beats.
- 12:58For me to become more real, for my promises to be made known,
- 13:03for my Kingdom to come. I'm not ashamed to be called
- 13:08their God. Behold, one who truly loves me.
- 13:12Simeon was such a man. You know, sometimes Christians
- 13:16struggle to discern whether their love for the Lord is
- 13:18strong enough or greater than their attachments to the things
- 13:22of this life. And so they wrest soul.
- 13:26And it becomes even more pressing when you encounter
- 13:28commands and instructions like do not love the world or the
- 13:33things of the world. How do I know if I love the
- 13:37world? How do I know if I love Christ
- 13:39more? How do I make sense of this?
- 13:43How can I measure it? How can I examine myself
- 13:45appropriately? Well, I have good news for you,
- 13:48because as you look through the Scriptures, you will find
- 13:51helpful clues that will determine, for you and me if
- 13:55we're willing to receive it, the health of our desires and if
- 14:01they are towards the right things.
- 14:05Can I give you one helpful clue? Here's one.
- 14:07Just listen to it. Psalm 119, verse 97.
- 14:11Oh, how I love your law. It is my meditation all the day.
- 14:19Where's the clue in that? Let me tell you, you meditate on
- 14:24what you love. That's the clue.
- 14:27Oh, how I love your law. You know, there are there are
- 14:30people who know the Bible, there are people who are willing to
- 14:34even adjust their lives to some of the principles of the Bible.
- 14:38But it's a whole different thing when you love God's Word and the
- 14:43psalmist tells us one way, you know you love it.
- 14:45I meditate on it all the time. I take it with me wherever I go.
- 14:53I'd love to talk about it with others who also meditate on the
- 14:55law. So that's just, that's just one
- 14:58nudge among many that shows us where our desires really are,
- 15:03what we truly long for, what we're reaching out for.
- 15:05This Simeon was waiting for the consolation of Israel.
- 15:11It was a burning passion in his bosom.
- 15:14And I am convinced that God saw that in this old man.
- 15:19And out of the many, including the scribes and the scholars and
- 15:23the theologians, he allowed Simeon to behold Christ at a
- 15:30very early point. That's His passion.
- 15:34May be our passion. May the Holy Spirit use this
- 15:37message to breathe that into our hearts.
- 15:41But let's consider His peace. Let's read now His peace, verse
- 15:5027 to verse 32. And he came in the Spirit into
- 15:58the temple, And when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do
- 16:03for him, according to the custom of the law, he took him up in
- 16:06his arms and blessed God and said, Lord, now you are letting
- 16:10your servant depart in peace according to your word.
- 16:14For my eyes have seen your salvation, that you have
- 16:16prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation
- 16:20to the Gentiles and for glory to your people.
- 16:23Israel Simeon and verse 28 took him up in his arms and blessed
- 16:31God. One of the ways that you know
- 16:34you can bless God is exemplified by this man where you outwardly
- 16:39express your gratitude and rehearse the testimonies of the
- 16:44Lord. And in this case, Simeon wants
- 16:47to declare God's faithfulness. You kept Your word to me, O
- 16:52Lord, and that is something that you and I must continually give
- 16:56praise to God for that Any promise that He has made to all
- 17:00humanity, the promises that He made to the nation of Israel
- 17:02through the prophets and the Psalms and the law, and any
- 17:05promise that He makes to you as an individual concerning your
- 17:07life, know this. He will never waver in His Word.
- 17:11He is constant. He is reliable.
- 17:14But even before Simeon celebrates God's fidelity, he
- 17:19highlights and rejoices in this, the peace he received from God.
- 17:27Notice it again here. It says here, Lord, now you are
- 17:31letting your servant depart in peace.
- 17:35What kind of peace is this? What kind of peace is this that
- 17:40allows a man to speak so calmly about his own death?
- 17:44I'm ready to die now, Lord. I'm ready to die right at this
- 17:48moment. How, what, what kind of
- 17:52confidence can a man tap into that allows him to be comforted
- 17:57at the thought of his own earthly departure?
- 18:01Simeon had it. There is this level of serenity
- 18:05that is so rare, and yet he's declaring it.
- 18:08He's sharing it out loud. And I think Simeon gives us a
- 18:12clue of how we can have it and how we can know it for
- 18:14ourselves. You unlock it by what he says in
- 18:18verse 30. Look at it again.
- 18:20For my eyes have seen your salvation.
- 18:23Why am I ready to depart in peace?
- 18:26Because my eyes have beheld your salvation.
- 18:29And listen, Simeon is not just ready to die because the Lord
- 18:33showed him the Lord's Christ. And so, OK, the promise is
- 18:36fulfilled. I'm ready to go now.
- 18:38It's because Simeon understood the salvation that this child
- 18:43would bring to him and to the rest of the world.
- 18:46It was a knowledge of the saving work of Christ that gave him
- 18:52this kind of peace. And here's the question that
- 18:56every single one of us has to ask.
- 18:59Do I have a clear vision like this man concerning what Christ
- 19:04has done? More specifically, do I have a
- 19:09comprehension of what Christ did in a trusting way?
- 19:16Because that will determine the level of peace you enjoy.
- 19:21Notice some of the things that Simeon says.
- 19:22Again, look at verse 31. What does he say?
- 19:26That you have prepared in the presence of all peoples?
- 19:29The salvation that he spoke of here.
- 19:31He says it was prepared. So Simeon even in this moment,
- 19:35understood that God had planned the salvation, that God from
- 19:38eternity passed, orchestrated salvation to come to humanity
- 19:44through this child. He understood this.
- 19:48Look at verse 32. It says that he would be a light
- 19:50for revelation to the Gentiles. So Christ was not just going to
- 19:54come to save the Jewish people, but the rest of the world.
- 19:57How many people understood that in Simeon's day?
- 20:00Very few. Even when Christ in the prime of
- 20:02his life was teaching it, people didn't get it.
- 20:08Simeon did. You're going to break into the
- 20:12darkness surrounding Israel. And lastly, look what he says
- 20:17here in verse 33 and for glory to your people, Israel.
- 20:22So there are many things that Israel can rejoice in concerning
- 20:26their history. The Jewish people understand
- 20:28that they have been granted the promises, the covenants, the
- 20:32law, the prophets. But Simeon says here that the
- 20:35greatest glory for them and from them is that the Savior
- 20:40descended from the seat of David.
- 20:43That would be their greatest glory.
- 20:46Here's what's so amazing about this confession.
- 20:50Did Simeon come to this understanding because Christ was
- 20:53preaching A sermon? No, he could barely walk at this
- 20:55time. Before the gospel was understood
- 20:59through the lips of the Savior, before he performed any kind of
- 21:02miracle, before any parable was expounded, Simeon had a robust
- 21:06understanding of the gospel. More than the again, the
- 21:13scholars and the theologians of his day, more than those who
- 21:16would behold the incomparable power and wisdom of Christ
- 21:20throughout his teaching ministry.
- 21:24And no doubt his clear perception contributed to his
- 21:26remarkable peace. You know, I found something
- 21:28about Christians, many things. One of them is this, that those
- 21:32who have a grasp of the gospel, those who understand the victory
- 21:36that Christ purchased on my behalf, are the same ones who
- 21:41tend to speak with the most confidence about death and are
- 21:47also the ones who are willing to face it with an otherworldly
- 21:51calm. I know Christians like that.
- 21:57They talk about death like they talk about sleep.
- 21:59You know, Christians like that. Oh, and that was very common
- 22:02with the older Christians. And so personally, I'm just
- 22:06catching up with some readings with the Puritans and I stumbled
- 22:10upon this quote and I thought it would be worth sharing just to
- 22:12give you a sample of how some of these minds that really, really
- 22:17dug into the Scriptures to know the depths of Christ's work on
- 22:21the cross and what he purchased for us, how they spoke and how
- 22:25they viewed this thing called death.
- 22:27According to the Bible, death is known as the King of terrors.
- 22:30But you would think to that these Puritans especially, they
- 22:33were like buddies with death. Listen to this from George
- 22:38Swinnik quote. He's trying to comfort
- 22:41Christians. So quote now is the quote.
- 22:45Is it the tearing down of your earthly Tabernacle that troubles
- 22:49you? Do you not know that death is
- 22:52the worker sent by the Father to pull down this earthly House of
- 22:57clay and mortality so that it may be set up anew, infinitely
- 23:01more lasting, beautiful and glorious?
- 23:03End Quote. Isn't that precious?
- 23:06What is he saying? For the Christian, death is his
- 23:11servant, and all death is, is once sent by God to disrobe you
- 23:17and to remove you of this flesh that has been corrupted and
- 23:20bruised and scarred, so that you would be prepared to be clothed
- 23:23with something infinitely more glorious and beautiful.
- 23:27Who thinks like that? Those who understand what Christ
- 23:30has done and what He purchased for us.
- 23:37But how did Simeon know all of this?
- 23:41How? How did he come to this
- 23:44knowledge? We have the answer.
- 23:48Maybe you missed it, but did you notice just how much Simeon in
- 23:51this brief biography has the Holy Spirit actively working in
- 23:58and through him? Go back to verse 25.
- 24:01Look at the end of verse 25. And the Holy Spirit was upon
- 24:05him, look at verse 26. And it had been revealed to him
- 24:09by the Holy Spirit. Look at verse 27.
- 24:13And he came in the spirit into the temple.
- 24:18And three verses, the Holy Spirit is mentioned, the
- 24:21activity of the Holy Spirit is mentioned in connection to this
- 24:23man, the Spirit, the Spirit, the Spirit.
- 24:25I'll tell you how you knew all of this, the Holy Spirit, the
- 24:29Holy Spirit. So you're, you're sitting today
- 24:31and you say, oh, brother, if I can only have a week of peace
- 24:36like this, I'm here to tell you can have more than just a week
- 24:40of it. You can have a lifetime of peace
- 24:42and you can have a peace so strong, so potent, that even
- 24:46when death knocks on your door, you can say, oh, God's servant
- 24:49is here to prepare me for my eternal abode.
- 24:55Well, how do I get it? Well, Simeon gives us some
- 24:59guidance. You need to know something about
- 25:03what Christ has done for you, the gospel that Christ performed
- 25:07for us. You need to know that.
- 25:09Well, how do I know that you? You can't come close to it
- 25:13unless you understand how the Holy Spirit works.
- 25:17So you have to seek the Holy Spirit.
- 25:19You have to be in his presence. You have to humble yourself and
- 25:22say, Lord, I with these eyes and with this mind, I might be able
- 25:25to collect some truths. But to know this thing about the
- 25:28gospel in a way that unlocks this kind of calm and
- 25:32confidence, I need your help. And as you seek him and as you
- 25:36wait on him, he'll be faithful to give you more understanding.
- 25:40And through that understanding, more faith, and through that
- 25:42faith, more peace. You know, Simeon, we're not told
- 25:47much about him here, but all that we have might even stir up
- 25:50a holy jealousy in you and me, specifically in his relationship
- 25:54with God. I mean, look how sensitive he is
- 25:56to the Spirit of God. Look how much the Spirit of God
- 25:57does for Simeon. I mean, on one day after he was
- 26:03promised, and we're not told when he was promised that he
- 26:05would see Christ. He was being guided unusually.
- 26:10Was it an audible voice? Was it this force moving him?
- 26:14We don't know. But all leading up to that
- 26:17moment, Can you imagine the anticipation?
- 26:19Oh, will it be today? You know, Simeon's there
- 26:21preparing his breakfast. Will it be today?
- 26:23Will I see the Messiah this afternoon?
- 26:25Will it be tonight? How will I know him?
- 26:28How is it going to be a light on him?
- 26:30Are others going to recognize him?
- 26:32You just imagine the daily excitement.
- 26:34And on one morning it was known and Simeon makes his way there.
- 26:42And what looked like an ordinary young family actually was
- 26:47something extraordinary. In the arms of these parents was
- 26:52the promised Messiah, and Simeon saw it.
- 26:58I'm sure we would love the Holy Spirit to lead our lives like
- 27:01that, right? All the time that we would save
- 27:05the testimonies we would have. But I want to actually lead you
- 27:09to this other point. Simeon in this chapter is not
- 27:13the only one who gets to experience the revelation that
- 27:16he had. Actually, we read of another
- 27:19elderly person. Look, later on in Luke chapter
- 27:212, we read about a woman named Anna who's a prophetess advance
- 27:26in years, and I want you to see how the scriptures describe her
- 27:28experience of this moment because she didn't have the same
- 27:33experience as Simeon, though she had the same revelation as him.
- 27:36Luke 236 read this with me and there was a prophetess Anna, the
- 27:41daughter of Fanuel of the tribe of Asher.
- 27:44She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband
- 27:46seven years from when she was a virgin and that as a widow until
- 27:50she was 84. She did not depart from the
- 27:53Temple, worshipping with fasting and prayer, night and day, and
- 27:57coming up at that very hour. She began to give thanks to God
- 28:00and to speak of Him, all who are waiting for the redemption of
- 28:04Jerusalem. So, like Simeon, Anna's devotion
- 28:08to God is emphasized. She was a spiritual woman.
- 28:12You rarely found her outside of the temple courts.
- 28:16She was fasting, she was praying, she was worshipping,
- 28:19and remarkably, she was glued to the House of God even though she
- 28:24had lost her husband. You know pain will either pull
- 28:29you away from God or push you towards Him.
- 28:33And this, this woman's devotion to the Lord did not wane, even
- 28:38though perhaps her expectations of marriage we're not met.
- 28:44But here's what's amazing, verse 38, Read your Bible slowly.
- 28:49Notice what it says. And coming up at that very hour.
- 28:54Translation right when Joseph and Mary entered and Simeon saw
- 28:59the child and prophesied, Anna was there and she heard it.
- 29:05And not only did she hear it, but she got so excited that what
- 29:09did she do at the end of verse 38?
- 29:11She began to speak of him to all who are waiting for the
- 29:13redemption of Jerusalem. So there was others who are
- 29:17waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.
- 29:19Don't you appreciate just how careful the Bible is with its
- 29:22words? We're told about Simeon, that he
- 29:27was waiting for what? The consolation of Israel,
- 29:31consolation meaning comfort, peace.
- 29:33But then when we come here, we read that Anna was testifying to
- 29:40all those who are waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.
- 29:45I don't think that's accidental. I think there's a point to be
- 29:48made from this that none of us can know true consolation unless
- 29:54we first know redemption. Redemption is the entryway into
- 29:59consolation, and Christ alone can provide that.
- 30:04Simeon is waiting for Israel to be delivered, and it's in a
- 30:08person, Christ. It's not just a government, it's
- 30:13not just a set of laws. It's in a person, Christ, who
- 30:15redeems, and he can bring consolation to your life.
- 30:19He can bring consolation to this nation.
- 30:21But we would have to humble ourselves and allow Him to
- 30:24redeem us. But that's a different point.
- 30:28The point that I want to bring to your attention is how Anna
- 30:31was led by God. It was not like Simeon.
- 30:34Simeon had a direct supernatural GPS.
- 30:38Turn here, turn there. Go now.
- 30:40Stop. No, not them.
- 30:41Yes, over there. I don't know how it was done,
- 30:43but then when you read about Anna, who is just as spiritual
- 30:47as Simeon, she just happened to be at the right place at the
- 30:50right time. She was guided by the invisible
- 30:54hand of God. This is what we call it,
- 30:57Providence. And I want to tell you
- 31:00something. If you belong to the Lord,
- 31:02Providence will always work in your favor.
- 31:05If you love the Lord, you have nothing to fear in this life,
- 31:10and you might want to have these encounters and perhaps visions
- 31:13and all these things. But Anna gives us the more
- 31:16common way we experience God's guidance in our lives, that as
- 31:20you simply obey the Lord as you walk and as you love him and
- 31:23serve him, he will take ordinary things and make him into an
- 31:27extraordinary story. If you want to know greater
- 31:33testimonies in 2026, be like this woman, be like this man and
- 31:38give him undivided devotion. There's a passion, but there's a
- 31:42peace, a peace that's granted through revelation, a peace
- 31:45that's granted through a relationship with the Holy
- 31:47Spirit. But all we have to end here with
- 31:49his prophecy. We can't just end with this
- 31:51knowledge of His peace. Look at verse 33 down to verse
- 31:5435. And his father and his mother
- 32:00marveled at what was said about him.
- 32:04Pause there for a moment. How how did you marvel?
- 32:09You had angelic encounters, the wise men, the shepherds, all
- 32:17that they said, all these experiences and and you're still
- 32:20marvelling rightfully so. I pray you and I would never
- 32:26cease to marvel as we learn new things about Christ.
- 32:32And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, Behold, this
- 32:37child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel,
- 32:41and for a sign that is opposed. And a sword will Pierce through
- 32:44your own soul also, so that the thoughts from many hearts may be
- 32:49revealed. So contrary to the limited
- 32:53understanding of most of the Jews at this time concerning the
- 32:57Messiah, and that many Jews still today have Simeon
- 33:02recognized and explained that although He is the promised 1,
- 33:05he will not be widely accepted by his own.
- 33:09That He will be the cause for the fall and the rise of many.
- 33:12The fall Speaking of those who would reject Him and be
- 33:15condemned as a result, and the rise Speaking of the redemption
- 33:19of those who would embrace Him and believe on His message.
- 33:24And Simeon goes on to prophecy. And he turns his attention to
- 33:27Mary to let her know that the opposition that this child will
- 33:32face will be so fierce that it's going to be like a sword as you
- 33:35see it and hear about it being pierced and driven into the
- 33:38depths of who you are. And that sword will be driven
- 33:42deeper still as this opposition climaxes at the cross of Christ.
- 33:47And so you see a measure of God's kindness through this
- 33:50prophecy and preparing Mary for the future of this child.
- 33:54I find it interesting that he doesn't address Joseph.
- 33:56And it could be because Joseph wouldn't live long enough to see
- 33:58it. And so Mary is is hearing all of
- 34:03this, and yes, she's marvelling, but she's also being warned so
- 34:09that she wouldn't be caught by surprise.
- 34:12But what Simeon says in the last part deserves our most attention
- 34:15for this time. Notice how he ends it in verse
- 34:1735 so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.
- 34:24What does that mean? Well, in the immediate sense, it
- 34:29means that the Incarnate Son of God would expose the true
- 34:32motives and intentions of people.
- 34:35And we see that in the gospel accounts, do we not?
- 34:37Especially with those Pharisees. They could not withstand, they
- 34:41they couldn't compress their true nature, their vile
- 34:44character in the light of Christ.
- 34:46He unmasked them. The truth that He spoke blasted
- 34:51away all the veneers and all the falsehood, and their hearts were
- 34:55really exposed. But in the broader sense, what
- 35:00Simeon says here applies for all time.
- 35:04The message of Jesus Christ reveals the very essence of who
- 35:09we are as people. When you really understand who
- 35:14He is and what He says, our sinful nature is exposed.
- 35:22In fact, no one describes the human condition more accurately
- 35:26than Jesus Christ of Nazareth. No psychologist, no philosopher,
- 35:31no religious leader comes close to how Christ assesses and
- 35:37diagnosis humanity's foundational problem and
- 35:40greatest need. And I know of some people whose
- 35:47journey with Christ started because they read or heard the
- 35:50Beatitudes, for example. Just the Beatitudes was enough
- 35:56for millions, I'm sure, throughout the ages to bend
- 35:59their knee in humility and acknowledge that they are
- 36:02sinners in need of a Savior. Think about it.
- 36:06Christ saying things like you've heard it was said that you shall
- 36:10not murder and that to murder and be a murderer is to be
- 36:14liable for judgement. But I say to you, if anyone is
- 36:18angry with his brother, he is liable to judgement.
- 36:22You've heard it was said you shall not commit adultery.
- 36:24But I say to you that if anyone looks at a woman with lustful
- 36:28intent, has already committed adultery with her in his heart,
- 36:35inescapable scrutiny. A standard so high no one dare
- 36:40be able to stare at the face of this teacher and say, I pass.
- 36:47He will reveal the hearts of many.
- 36:49And he's still doing it today. And this is what it means for
- 36:53us, especially for the person who might be sitting here and is
- 36:55not a follower of Jesus Christ. You have to understand that when
- 36:59you understand who Christ is, you will discover who you are
- 37:05and what you will discover about yourself.
- 37:07And the light of his moral beauty and majesty is humbling
- 37:12if you're willing to accept it, that you were not as good as you
- 37:16thought. You're not as righteous as you
- 37:19believe, and you're actually so below the standard that God
- 37:25presents to us and sets against all of us as a moral lawgiver of
- 37:30the universe, that you're doomed, as am I.
- 37:37But Christ is not just the revealer of hearts.
- 37:41This is the best part. He's the only one who can
- 37:45transform them. Christ doesn't reveal hearts to
- 37:50shame people. You find that in the Gospels.
- 37:54Christ doesn't expose men in order to embarrass them or to
- 37:57condemn them. He removes all the veils that we
- 38:02set up, all the fig leaves that we've sown to try to cover
- 38:06ourselves, to show us just how wounded, just how rebellious,
- 38:11just how sick we are. He's the great physician that
- 38:18does not shy away from giving you the accurate diagnosis of
- 38:22your condition. In order for you to say I need
- 38:28to be healed, I need to be forgiven, I have a great debt
- 38:34that needs to be paid. And Luke, who's telling us a
- 38:39story about Simeon, his passion, his peace, his prophecy, like
- 38:44most of the other Gospel accounts, spends more time
- 38:48focusing on Jesus's ministry leading up to his redemption on
- 38:53the cross. And when you continue from this
- 38:57point on, you learn something. You learn many things about the
- 39:01heart of Christ. Let me give you one example
- 39:04before we close. The same Jesus who Simeon says
- 39:08would reveal the thoughts of many hearts shows us just how
- 39:12tender he is. Though he is blazing in purity
- 39:15and holiness, it's gentle and lowly.
- 39:21Even to this day. After years of reading the
- 39:22Bible, there's one account of Jesus healing power that never
- 39:25ceases to fail to move me to tears.
- 39:29I don't care where I am, when I'm reading it, it it does
- 39:32something to me. It's when Jesus is there and
- 39:36this man, this leper runs to him out of nowhere and it says he
- 39:41falls to the ground and he begs him, Lord, if you are willing,
- 39:44you can make me clean. Like every time I read that it
- 39:47just if you just knew what a leper had to go through, how he
- 39:52was ostracized, he lost his family, he was rejected.
- 39:57He was a walking red flag. Nobody would come near the years
- 40:00of not knowing human judge being despised, rotting somewhere in
- 40:07the outskirts of the city. And yet he hears about this
- 40:11Christ and he finds him one day and he runs them in desperation
- 40:15and he says, oh, if you can, you can make me clean.
- 40:18And when you read about it in Luke chapter 5, before Jesus
- 40:22even says anything, he says that he reaches out and he touches
- 40:26him, and then he says, I will be clean.
- 40:34I'm sure that when Christ initially extended his hand and
- 40:36touched that man, there was a gasp for any onlookers.
- 40:42You wouldn't dare touch a leper. You would be richly unclean.
- 40:47You would be in danger of being contaminated.
- 40:49Surely in Christ, without hesitation, he doesn't even
- 40:54flinch. He doesn't step back.
- 40:56He steps forward and he touches the man and he heals him.
- 41:03So many things to learn from that.
- 41:04Let me give you just one main thought.
- 41:06What others would not dare embrace, what others would not
- 41:10dare interact with, Christ does. There is no pollution, There is
- 41:15no filth, there is no disease. More importantly, in the
- 41:20spiritual sense, that Christ is not willing to touch and heal
- 41:24because you might be sitting here and saying, OK, He's the
- 41:26revealer of hearts. Brother, you don't know what my
- 41:29heart produces, the idols that it creates, and the perversion
- 41:32that it likes to nibble on from time to time.
- 41:35In fact, I'm struggling while you're preaching with the things
- 41:37in my heart. Let me tell you something.
- 41:39This is the same Christ who touches lepers and He's willing
- 41:46to touch and heal you. He's not intimidated by you.
- 41:54He understands our sin, but he doesn't recoil.
- 42:00He doesn't reconsider. In his great love, he enters
- 42:03into our world, this Dark World, this evil world, so that he can
- 42:07make the payment necessary to wash you.
- 42:11And it was a great payment to cleanse you.
- 42:16Me. Yes, you.
- 42:19You, the one that others would not dare have anything to do
- 42:22with, perhaps. This gives me so much hope, man.
- 42:26You got to believe it for those in your family that are the
- 42:28black sheep. You got to believe it for your
- 42:30nephews, your nieces. You got to believe it for your
- 42:32parents. You got to believe it for your
- 42:34spouse. You got to believe that no
- 42:35matter how dark and evil and corrupt they may be, that Christ
- 42:39can heal them. This is the Christmas message.
- 42:43This is the Christmas message. The Christmas message is not us
- 42:46huddling around the scene of a baby that doesn't talk.
- 42:49And it's just cute that no, no, no, no.
- 42:51This is the message of redemption.
- 42:52That's what Christmas is about. And I'm here to offer it to you,
- 42:56not because I have anything to give you, but because this book
- 42:59promises us redemption and Simeon tells us about it in this
- 43:03prophecy. I wonder today if your heart has
- 43:08been more exposed than ever under the preaching of His Word.
- 43:12I wonder if today you feel more convicted than you ever have.
- 43:15Well, if you're sitting there in conviction, be comforted that
- 43:18this Christ who pulls the sheets of our excuses and our lies and
- 43:26our justifications, doesn't do it so that He can find you in a
- 43:31place naked and afraid. He does it so that He can clothe
- 43:35you with His own righteousness after He heals that heart of
- 43:38yours. Would you let Him?
- 43:42What's holding you back? What about this is bad news?
- 43:48What about this makes you hesitate?
- 43:49What about this makes you afraid?
- 43:52What is your sin done for you except bring pain to your life?
- 43:56What does being the the master of your own fate produce for you
- 44:00other than disappointment? Surrender.
- 44:07Give up? What does repentance really
- 44:09mean? Really just means give up, stop,
- 44:13fall at His feet, crown Him as Lord and He will transform your
- 44:20life. If you doubt it then understand
- 44:27what the Christmas message is. He didn't have to come, but he
- 44:31did come with one goal in mind. Yes, to bring glory to Himself.
- 44:36We know that, but also in His great love to draw you to
- 44:40Himself for all of eternity and I pray that today you would put
- 44:44your hand in his hand and no true life.
- 44:48Let's pray low.
- 45:11We know that no one would be able to do what Simeon had the
- 45:17privilege of doing. That is holding in his arms the
- 45:22child Jesus the Lord. Your word does tell us that we
- 45:27can embrace you in another way, the embrace of faith.
- 45:33And we pray that this afternoon that the gift of salvation would
- 45:37be opened by some, maybe even 1 today, that they would realize
- 45:44by the help of your Holy Spirit, the great salvation that you've
- 45:48prepared for them that you offer to the entire world.
- 45:54And that you are not just the revealer of hearts.
- 45:56You are the healer of those broken, shattered hearts.
- 46:01Today, Lord, for those who have been saved, we pray that you
- 46:05would help us grow in our passion for what matters the
- 46:08most, that we, like Simeon, would be reaching out inwardly
- 46:17for the things above, for your promises, Your presence to be
- 46:21more real in our lives. And Lord, we pray even for those
- 46:25who may not have peace, who may be even entering into this
- 46:28holiday season worried that they will not enjoy it because of
- 46:32circumstances like Anna's, where family members will not be there
- 46:37like they were in previous years, where loneliness will
- 46:40become more of a reality. Lord, we pray for your peace to
- 46:45be our portion for the rest of this year, and not just the rest
- 46:49of this year but the rest of our lives.
- 46:51Even as we approach our own death, we can say, Lord now your
- 46:54servant can depart in peace for we have seen your salvation.
- 46:58In Jesus name we pray these things, Amen.
- 47:02Let's worship the living Christ who loves us so deeply.
