Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to another episode of Fox Crickets podcast
- 0:03Speaker 1: The follow On.
- 0:04Speaker 2: My name is Courtney Walsh.
- 0:05Speaker 1: I'm a senior journalist with Fox Sports in Melbourne looking
- 0:10Speaker 1: to the Ashes coming up, and it's an absolute pleasure
- 0:12Speaker 1: to be joined by former England fast baller Matthew Hoggard
- 0:16Speaker 1: played sixty seven Tests for England, two hundred and forty
- 0:19Speaker 1: eight Test wickets, twelve of those Tests, almost almost fifth
- 0:24Speaker 1: against Australia and thirty five wickets against the Aussies, and
- 0:29Speaker 1: was a starring member of that two thousand and five
- 0:32Speaker 1: Ashes Series one by England, considered one of the greatest ever.
- 0:35Speaker 1: How are you, mat Thanks for joining the further one.
- 0:38Speaker 3: Yeah, that ways nice to see you. I have to
- 0:40Speaker 3: be surprised though, when I said I was going to
- 0:42Speaker 3: be invited to talk with Courtney Walsh. I was expecting
- 0:45Speaker 3: somebody else, just.
- 0:47Speaker 2: A little taller and a little more.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Do you ever play against Courtney Welsh?
- 0:52Speaker 3: Then he will be my first ball in Test cricket,
- 0:55Speaker 3: Is that right? Yeah? I made my debut against the
- 0:57Speaker 3: West Indies and i'd push forward because it was last
- 1:00Speaker 3: ball of the over. I pushed forward the full defensive
- 1:03Speaker 3: thinking he's going to try and get me out and
- 1:04Speaker 3: the ball went Welcome to Test cricket. But yeah, it
- 1:10Speaker 3: nearly clew me up.
- 1:12Speaker 1: I was gonna say I made him once when I
- 1:13Speaker 1: was about eight years old. Net in my head actually
- 1:15Speaker 1: headlines here it's sort of similar, nothing to what you
- 1:17Speaker 1: might have been spoiling, sort of two thousands long as
- 1:20Speaker 1: you've kept yours. But I don't know because I suspected
- 1:23Speaker 1: facing the wis See, these must have been absolutely frightening
- 1:26Speaker 1: giving those legends at their head.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Ah, it was when you when you're a nervous youngster
- 1:31Speaker 3: on your debut at the Home of Cricket at Lords,
- 1:34Speaker 3: I think we needed thirty two win with two wickets left,
- 1:37Speaker 3: and it was Darren Goff and Dominic Cork at the
- 1:39Speaker 3: crease and I was next in. I was chewing my
- 1:40Speaker 3: bat handle. I was fully kitted up because I wasn't
- 1:44Speaker 3: you see my bat in prowess. I wasn't the greatest
- 1:47Speaker 3: and being scared Whitlers going in next. I was just bricking.
- 1:52Speaker 3: I was just yeah, it was. I was so nervous
- 1:55Speaker 3: going in on my Test debut against Courtney Walsh and
- 1:58Speaker 3: the Ambrose as well.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I think Curtly, I mean I think Courtney, what
- 2:02Speaker 1: took five hundred and twelve test?
- 2:04Speaker 2: We get some curtly, Well, it must have been.
- 2:07Speaker 3: They were all right, weren't they. They didn't give you
- 2:09Speaker 3: much in your enough.
- 2:11Speaker 2: I never had the joy of facing them, and I'm well,
- 2:13Speaker 2: so I don't know if it's a joy. I never
- 2:14Speaker 2: had the.
- 2:17Speaker 3: Frightening.
- 2:17Speaker 2: So but look, I.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Suppose what you as I said, we've got you on
- 2:21Speaker 1: today in part we're doing a special feature sort of
- 2:24Speaker 1: series looking back at the at that iconic series in
- 2:27Speaker 1: two thousand and five, and I was going through I
- 2:30Speaker 1: suppose some of at least some some great players that
- 2:32Speaker 1: you played against in that series and also with and
- 2:35Speaker 1: figuring out what people are up to, and I thought, well,
- 2:37Speaker 1: what is Matthew hogging up to? And I came across
- 2:39Speaker 1: a link to some motivational speaking, So what what are
- 2:43Speaker 1: you doing? You've got I see you've got Hoggies grill
- 2:45Speaker 1: so I knew you were running a business and you've
- 2:47Speaker 1: leaned into the surname there. But what is what is
- 2:49Speaker 1: life like for Matthew Hoggin after what's the motivational speaking about?
- 2:53Speaker 3: Yeah, obviously, retiring from international sport, from professional sport is
- 3:01Speaker 3: hard at the best of times and when you retire
- 3:05Speaker 3: thinking well, what have I done for the last eighteen years,
- 3:08Speaker 3: twenty years? I've run around after a little leather thing.
- 3:10Speaker 3: What qualifications have I got to go on and get
- 3:15Speaker 3: a job, because you have to get a job. And
- 3:18Speaker 3: I tried my hand at insurance. I tried my hand
- 3:22Speaker 3: at foreign currency and I hated every bit of it.
- 3:28Speaker 3: And I had to find my passion, which was eating
- 3:31Speaker 3: and drinking. I spent a lot of time in South
- 3:38Speaker 3: Africa playing cricket when I was young, growing up.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Yore before you, before you played for England, and.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Yeah I was. When I was eighteen, I went over
- 3:47Speaker 3: and played club cricket and then that progressed into playing
- 3:51Speaker 3: first class cricket for Orange Free Steak. So I had
- 3:56Speaker 3: Handsy Kronnier as my captain. I had Alan Donald as
- 3:59Speaker 3: an opening bowling. At the age of twenty, I'd only
- 4:04Speaker 3: just got into the Yorkshire books and then now I
- 4:08Speaker 3: was playing with some absolute legends of the game and
- 4:12Speaker 3: learning how to bowler in South Africa. But their lifestyle
- 4:16Speaker 3: because they've got the weather, they've got the woods, they've
- 4:20Speaker 3: got the meat, and just standing around in a backyard
- 4:24Speaker 3: lighting fires, cooking amazing food, chatting, shit, eating and drinking.
- 4:30Speaker 3: I just love that. And I thought, we don't do
- 4:34Speaker 3: it properly. Over England. We see a little bit of sunshine,
- 4:36Speaker 3: we go right, then, let's go to the supermarket with
- 4:38Speaker 3: a crappy sausages, crappy burgers. We pre cooked our chicken
- 4:42Speaker 3: in the oven, and we don't do it right. So
- 4:44Speaker 3: I wanted to elevate people and say you can cook
- 4:46Speaker 3: anything on a barbecue, including Yorkshire puddings, souflets, cakes, and
- 4:53Speaker 3: we opened a business for It's a cooking school on fire,
- 4:58Speaker 3: basically a barbecues, an thing you need to know about barbecues, bries,
- 5:02Speaker 3: whatever you want to call them. Girls, we teach how
- 5:05Speaker 3: to cook them and it's absolutely amazing. But then coupled
- 5:10Speaker 3: with that, you said, right then, over the last eighteen
- 5:12Speaker 3: years twenty years, you've been in a team, You've been
- 5:15Speaker 3: in a high performance environment. You've had lots of ambitious
- 5:21Speaker 3: people that are highly driven at the cutting edge of
- 5:24Speaker 3: your of your game, and there's a lot of crossovers
- 5:27Speaker 3: with businesses and everything else. So it's about building teams,
- 5:30Speaker 3: making sure that everybody's got the role in their places.
- 5:33Speaker 3: And it's a long winded answer, isn't it everybody? You're
- 5:38Speaker 3: getting the best out of everybody you've got available.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Well, and you touched on you know some athletes who
- 5:45Speaker 1: have difficulties transitioning in terms of the speaking I suppose
- 5:48Speaker 1: in terms of the motivational stuff when you when you
- 5:51Speaker 1: move into that what what listens can you do? Do
- 5:53Speaker 1: you talk to corporates? I think you showed us some
- 5:55Speaker 1: you know, some footage from the background there. I think
- 5:57Speaker 1: you're still buy stuff in the north.
- 5:59Speaker 3: No, I'm in the Midlands now. I'm in Lester, smart
- 6:03Speaker 3: bang in the middle of the country, easy for traveling.
- 6:07Speaker 3: But when yorkure sacked me, I captain Leicester for four
- 6:11Speaker 3: years and we thought as soon as we're finished with
- 6:14Speaker 3: we've moved back up north. But we Sarah, my wife,
- 6:19Speaker 3: found a lord of friends, forged a life with herself.
- 6:23Speaker 3: Ernie was happy at school, my lad and it's beautiful countryside,
- 6:28Speaker 3: it's handy for going up and down the country and
- 6:32Speaker 3: we've stayed, which surprised both of us.
- 6:36Speaker 1: I know, I know, it's sort of like the LISTI are.
- 6:38Speaker 1: I know Booming, which is a bit further here and.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Just just a little bit further west.
- 6:45Speaker 1: And I am familiar with that sort of great clouds
- 6:47Speaker 1: behind you. But as I said before, I basically I
- 6:50Speaker 1: shouldn't be showing startings in there be behind you there,
- 6:54Speaker 1: But I suppose well we we we talk about you
- 6:58Speaker 1: pretty briefly and the ashes, you know I talked about
- 7:01Speaker 1: you played twelve tests. I think early on a couple
- 7:04Speaker 1: of those tests were a little rough. I think you
- 7:06Speaker 1: had Matthew.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Hayden who went to Brisbane and went right. Then, it
- 7:13Speaker 3: hasn't rained for three months. It looks a belting pitch.
- 7:17Speaker 3: There aren't being batters are in no form whatsoever. We've
- 7:20Speaker 3: got a young bowling attack won the toss let's bowl
- 7:24Speaker 3: first and I'm blaming NASA. Nothing to do. And that
- 7:32Speaker 3: was the test, my unfortunate Test match that Simon Jones
- 7:35Speaker 3: when went down in the outfielder and did his knee yes,
- 7:40Speaker 3: which cut his his mash series short, which was really
- 7:45Speaker 3: really sad. What a fantastic bowler Simon is. I was
- 7:49Speaker 3: still whatever you want to go. I came across Matthew
- 7:55Speaker 3: Hayden who had just come back after Zimbabwe beating the
- 7:58Speaker 3: world god number. So it was in good form and
- 8:02Speaker 3: I can remember, right, just bowl your best ball and
- 8:05Speaker 3: make them make the big the big shots. So what
- 8:09Speaker 3: I bowled, what I thought was my best ball, went
- 8:12Speaker 3: for four. I went, Okay, no worries, I'll stick to
- 8:15Speaker 3: my plan. I'll ball my best ball again and see
- 8:17Speaker 3: what happened. So I bowled my best ball again and
- 8:19Speaker 3: it went for four, and we went, oh Ship, what
- 8:21Speaker 3: do I do now? So I was, I was fairly
- 8:25Speaker 3: young in my career. I didn't have a plan seeing
- 8:28Speaker 3: D and B and C and D.
- 8:29Speaker 1: So I was.
- 8:31Speaker 3: I was Matthew Hayden, and so I was brought out
- 8:34Speaker 3: of the attack and Craig White came in, who bowled
- 8:37Speaker 3: ninety mile an hour, and it was obvious that Matthew
- 8:41Speaker 3: hated ranking because Hedos just kept on tracking him first
- 8:44Speaker 3: over and smacking him straight back over his head for
- 8:46Speaker 3: six and half of me went, at least it's not
- 8:50Speaker 3: just me and the other half, Oh ship, what the
- 8:54Speaker 3: are we going to do now? So, yeah, I was
- 8:58Speaker 3: my first ASHES experien is over in Australia back in
- 9:01Speaker 3: two thousand and Mornich look today, whatever it was, Yeah, yeah,
- 9:07Speaker 3: it wasn't wasn't a happy experience. But so we we
- 9:13Speaker 3: were I think we were four nil down and we
- 9:15Speaker 3: went to Sydney, Steve Warm we won. The fantastic fans
- 9:24Speaker 3: best fans in the world kept on the single on
- 9:26Speaker 3: beating in two thousand and three, so we might we
- 9:30Speaker 3: might be four nil down in the series, but we
- 9:32Speaker 3: weren't beating into it was brilliant. Well.
- 9:36Speaker 1: I had to chet too to Michael Varney, who kept
- 9:39Speaker 1: him in five series and he was he said, I
- 9:43Speaker 1: was asking him about it's a famous moment in I
- 9:46Speaker 1: suppose in Australian cricket history, because Steve Wall makes a
- 9:51Speaker 1: hundred in what you know in that last ball, I
- 9:53Speaker 1: think Richard Dawson outside and I'm told Richard Dawson now
- 9:58Speaker 1: introduced himself.
- 9:59Speaker 3: Met Cunum and these.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Ryan Spinner told me that that Richard Dawson himself by saying,
- 10:03Speaker 1: I'm the person who bold that delivered to Steve Wall.
- 10:07Speaker 1: What Michael, what Michael Vaughan was saying was that, yeah,
- 10:09Speaker 1: you know, it's a great shot and the atmosphere is amazing.
- 10:11Speaker 2: What people forget is that we actually won that, we
- 10:14Speaker 2: won that test.
- 10:15Speaker 1: They came back to Steve walking in early and and
- 10:17Speaker 1: hey it wasn't a clean sweep and in the BAMI
- 10:20Speaker 1: army must be pretty much pretty good when they're up
- 10:22Speaker 1: behind here saying we're unbeating and it's right now.
- 10:25Speaker 3: I can't remember if it was the first innings or
- 10:28Speaker 3: second innings, but I actually got Steve and I can
- 10:35Speaker 3: remember Steve White and Richard Dawson through then diving in
- 10:41Speaker 3: and holding up his non branded bat because he didn't
- 10:44Speaker 3: have a bat sponsor for that Test match, so I
- 10:46Speaker 3: had a clean bat for for for the Test match.
- 10:49Speaker 3: God is going his last one hundred in his last game.
- 10:53Speaker 1: There you go, that's something I have to go back
- 10:54Speaker 1: and have a look at the video. That's that's were
- 10:57Speaker 1: doing something on the Growless moment. So you've you've given
- 10:59Speaker 1: a little tid bit of information there. Yeah, will you
- 11:05Speaker 1: talk about that that you know that that brutality I
- 11:07Speaker 1: suppose leading into this Ashes series, I might get your
- 11:09Speaker 1: thoughts on a couple of the I supposed the key topics,
- 11:11Speaker 1: and one of them is and it's the same for
- 11:14Speaker 1: you know, Pat Cummins, the Australian captain. He's back backsman
- 11:17Speaker 1: and a bit of time in the nets, so they
- 11:18Speaker 1: think he might make Brisbane. I suppose there's been conconcerns
- 11:22Speaker 1: raised as to whether or not Mark Wooden joffer Archer
- 11:25Speaker 1: will be able to to last the five sort of
- 11:27Speaker 1: tests of the summer. There are some gaps, you know,
- 11:29Speaker 1: there's ten days or so between Perth and and sorry
- 11:32Speaker 1: in Brisbane, and then there's another decent break to Adelaide,
- 11:35Speaker 1: but then you get pretty much back to back pretty
- 11:37Speaker 1: quick with the with the MCG and the SCG. How
- 11:41Speaker 1: hard is it for a fast bowler to get through
- 11:43Speaker 1: those five tests in Australia And is it different to
- 11:46Speaker 1: sort of playing.
- 11:47Speaker 2: In the UK. Is it a harder footing?
- 11:49Speaker 1: Like what are some of the testing moments about playing
- 11:51Speaker 1: here compared to say you're trying to get through five
- 11:53Speaker 1: tests at home.
- 11:55Speaker 3: I'm going to see you left a fast bowler and
- 11:57Speaker 3: I was just a.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Median fast fall will go within.
- 12:04Speaker 3: Yeah, as you said that, the concerns around both camps,
- 12:08Speaker 3: obviously the Poms are saying that you're aging attack and
- 12:12Speaker 3: it's gonna gonna take a lot out of the body.
- 12:14Speaker 3: Where we're scared of having warm up games in case
- 12:17Speaker 3: we break down in warm up games, so we've got
- 12:19Speaker 3: them out on the head. And and there's a difference
- 12:23Speaker 3: between playing bowlding in the nets. There's a difference between
- 12:27Speaker 3: playing with your mates, and then playing against foreign opposition,
- 12:32Speaker 3: and then playing in a Test match. There is so
- 12:35Speaker 3: that the intensity and the pressure and the rather and
- 12:38Speaker 3: just the amount of I know, you say, I've put
- 12:42Speaker 3: on hundred percent through my body in nets, and I
- 12:43Speaker 3: put one hundred percent body bowling at the Lions. But
- 12:47Speaker 3: until you get into that first situation where the crowds roaring,
- 12:50Speaker 3: the barmy armies behind you, it's it's the ashes, your
- 12:55Speaker 3: beans are pumping, you got. You can't put yourself in
- 12:58Speaker 3: that situation. So for me, I had to bowl and
- 13:02Speaker 3: get the oars underneath my belt to feel that I
- 13:04Speaker 3: had enough rhythm, enough bowling to bowl well. Other people
- 13:10Speaker 3: like Andrew Flintoff used to pick up the ball ball
- 13:13Speaker 3: three balls in the nets and say right then, I'm ready.
- 13:15Speaker 3: So I don't think it's a one solution fits everybody.
- 13:19Speaker 3: It's not one blood fits all. I think you have
- 13:22Speaker 3: to be very it's careful of how you're pigeonhole people
- 13:26Speaker 3: and say and this is the correct way around it.
- 13:30Speaker 3: But the hardships in and you see, I'm going to
- 13:37Speaker 3: purpoo everything. Because cricket's a right, very very simple game.
- 13:42Speaker 3: It's twenty two yards long. There's bits of wood at
- 13:45Speaker 3: each end, and you're not going to be the same.
- 13:48Speaker 3: The length might change by thirty centimeters. And it's such
- 13:53Speaker 3: a simple game made complicated by the people that play it.
- 13:57Speaker 3: There's all a lot of bold dash around it. I
- 14:01Speaker 3: think the hardship is the intensity. I think the easy
- 14:05Speaker 3: but is the weather. Because yeah, yes it's warm, so
- 14:09Speaker 3: you have to take on your fluid. You have to rehydrate.
- 14:12Speaker 3: But that's why you get put down to third man
- 14:14Speaker 3: and fine leg, not because you were a ship fielder,
- 14:16Speaker 3: just because you have to rehigreate. That's correct, so so
- 14:24Speaker 3: you reh but I found that you didn't. It didn't
- 14:27Speaker 3: take us long to get loose. It was easier on
- 14:29Speaker 3: the body in the warmer conditions because your muscles didn't
- 14:31Speaker 3: get as stiff, you didn't tighten up as much. So
- 14:35Speaker 3: I enjoyed playing in the in the warmer weather. Obviously
- 14:38Speaker 3: not the blistering heat, but mid to late twenties was fine.
- 14:45Speaker 3: And the back to back to back is that that
- 14:49Speaker 3: is the hardest. But it's the as a as a
- 14:53Speaker 3: medium fast bawler, I didn't have to have that express
- 14:58Speaker 3: intensity match changing spell because my I swung it out.
- 15:06Speaker 3: I was lying on length. I wasn't going to scare batsman.
- 15:09Speaker 3: I wasn't there for my express space. Whereas if you
- 15:13Speaker 3: put somebody in and saying right, then your job is
- 15:15Speaker 3: to bowl express to rough the batsman. Not that is
- 15:19Speaker 3: a different kettle of fish. You're just running up and
- 15:21Speaker 3: be a metronome and work in a length. So I
- 15:26Speaker 3: think that's the hardest bit, day in, day out, getting
- 15:30Speaker 3: your body in the right space to bowl ninety five
- 15:32Speaker 3: miles an hour, which I've never done, so I don't
- 15:35Speaker 3: know what that feels like.
- 15:38Speaker 1: I'll ask you just one before we get into the
- 15:40Speaker 1: big series, because I mindful the old clock it's chicking.
- 15:44Speaker 1: It was put to me that Injury Flintoff, you touch
- 15:48Speaker 1: on him briefly just before with the three deliveries. But
- 15:50Speaker 1: Bin Stokes, there's a bit of being Stokes, I suppose
- 15:53Speaker 1: in Injury Flintoff during Giant said one thing with flint
- 15:56Speaker 1: Op is that he used to walk in and you
- 15:57Speaker 1: just knew did he given everything in eats up in
- 16:00Speaker 1: the chair, but you know they.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Left nothing at it. He is a skipper, he is
- 16:05Speaker 2: the plier. How important is his summer.
- 16:07Speaker 3: A pivotal to me? As as an old player looking
- 16:13Speaker 3: in I'd hate being captain by him because he kept
- 16:16Speaker 3: on winning the toss on decent decks and bowling first.
- 16:20Speaker 3: What you why are we not batting? But the results
- 16:24Speaker 3: speak for themselves. Is the way he goes around captaincy,
- 16:29Speaker 3: the positivity that he is, the way he inspires winning
- 16:32Speaker 3: bawls when his back, when his field and his three
- 16:34Speaker 3: in one cricketer covers all facets wholehearted. You know that
- 16:39Speaker 3: he will give his all and be very difficult to
- 16:43Speaker 3: get the ball out of his hand because when he's
- 16:45Speaker 3: in rhythm he loves to bawl them long spelts. But
- 16:49Speaker 3: he is also the captain, so he can't take the
- 16:50Speaker 3: ball out of his hands. But that's why he gets injured,
- 16:54Speaker 3: because he gives everything nord to win that game of cricket.
- 16:58Speaker 3: But on top of that, it's the way that he
- 17:01Speaker 3: conducts himself and the way he gets the best out
- 17:04Speaker 3: of his players, because I think the players respond so
- 17:07Speaker 3: much better with him on the pitch and they they
- 17:12Speaker 3: they want to play for Ben, they want to bleed
- 17:15Speaker 3: blood for England for Ben, to make sure that we
- 17:18Speaker 3: come out with the right with the right result in
- 17:21Speaker 3: the end. So apart from his bat in his ball
- 17:26Speaker 3: and his field and in his captains. I think the
- 17:28Speaker 3: team are a lot better with Ben in there, so
- 17:31Speaker 3: no pressure Ben, but I think if he stays fit
- 17:33Speaker 3: for the five five days, our five games, then it
- 17:37Speaker 3: will be very beneficial.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Well could it be twenty years on another tryph victory.
- 17:46Speaker 1: We'll get it onto this great series. I've heard tales
- 17:49Speaker 1: a bit Elton John delivery in champagne after I've heard
- 17:54Speaker 1: stories of it's being hit by the camera bus after
- 17:58Speaker 1: a celebration. The first taste heard England looking over at
- 18:02Speaker 1: the Aussie celebrating the drawer and taking confidence from it.
- 18:06Speaker 2: The great celebrations. You're a serf. These all manner of difference.
- 18:14Speaker 3: I'm or whatever.
- 18:18Speaker 2: We'd love spilled the dirt, but we'll start like, just
- 18:21Speaker 2: run through it first.
- 18:22Speaker 3: TI.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Maybe we don't worry about the first tis because you know.
- 18:24Speaker 3: What happened, Yeah, yeah, yeah, But what happened is we
- 18:29Speaker 3: hit the os Is hard. We hit Langer, we hit Hayden,
- 18:34Speaker 3: we hit Ponting, and when I say we, it was Harmy.
- 18:37Speaker 3: Harmy hit hay and hit Langer, hit Ponting. And when
- 18:41Speaker 3: Ricky got hit in the head, not one single person
- 18:44Speaker 3: went to see if it was all right, yeah, not
- 18:49Speaker 3: blood coming down his cheek. Not one person went to
- 18:51Speaker 3: see it because we didn't want to just take a
- 18:54Speaker 3: backward step. We didn't want to get bullied because you
- 18:58Speaker 3: look at that side that we played two thousand and five,
- 19:01Speaker 3: we got Gilcrest coming in at seven seven, you got
- 19:04Speaker 3: five wickets down. You're thinking yes with the beginning of
- 19:11Speaker 3: the tail at guild drift in your boat. I mean
- 19:15Speaker 3: you're bowling McGrath, Lesbie, Brett Lee and one. You didn't
- 19:22Speaker 3: have a week link. There wasn't a week link in
- 19:24Speaker 3: that side, and you were by far the best side
- 19:28Speaker 3: in the early two thousands. So we we we knew
- 19:33Speaker 3: we had to play on top of our game. We
- 19:35Speaker 3: knew we had to step up and look you in
- 19:38Speaker 3: the eye and take it, take you on face to face.
- 19:40Speaker 3: So that that incident where we didn't we didn't go
- 19:45Speaker 3: to see if you are right, where normally we're all
- 19:47Speaker 3: apologetic and sorry q open and we bowled out for
- 19:52Speaker 3: less than two hundred one, so we knew we could
- 19:58Speaker 3: take ten wickets. We knew and it was a decent deck,
- 20:01Speaker 3: so we knew we could take take wickets. So all
- 20:06Speaker 3: we needed to do was score runs, which we didn't
- 20:10Speaker 3: do too well, but it was the start of that
- 20:14Speaker 3: Ashes series. We knew that we could hurt you, and
- 20:17Speaker 3: we could match you with firepower, we could take wickets.
- 20:21Speaker 3: And then we had KP coming down and tracking McGrath
- 20:25Speaker 3: and smacking him back into the pavilion. And nobody does
- 20:30Speaker 3: that to glenmo Grado. Nobody tracks him and smacks him back.
- 20:34Speaker 3: And KP said, why not, It's just a ball. Don't
- 20:37Speaker 3: play the man, play the ball, and it was great.
- 20:40Speaker 3: Mats were warning down at Hampshire, so he knew that
- 20:43Speaker 3: he was sweeping in reverse sweeping. It just changed a
- 20:47Speaker 3: dynamic of what was achievable against your bawling attack, and
- 20:54Speaker 3: we knew we could take wickets. It wasn't Matthew Hayden
- 20:57Speaker 3: coming out and scoring three hundred and seventy r, however
- 21:00Speaker 3: many who did at Brisbane. It came out and got
- 21:01Speaker 3: hit and got hurt, behaving normally when you're bowl him
- 21:05Speaker 3: a balance. So he used to go, well, then I
- 21:08Speaker 3: have a cup of tea and then I'll put you.
- 21:12Speaker 3: So to see him get it and see Langer get
- 21:14Speaker 3: hit on a on a lord's pitch was was very
- 21:18Speaker 3: encouraging for us.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Adam Gilchrist I spoke to and he said that at
- 21:22Speaker 1: the end of that first test, now you know, he said,
- 21:25Speaker 1: thinks memories and the change. But he said it was
- 21:26Speaker 1: interesting that he doesn't think he had a drink afterwards,
- 21:29Speaker 1: and he said, that's that sid to us as well.
- 21:32Speaker 1: These guys did sit serious. They want every bit of
- 21:34Speaker 1: this and so you get to look, you get to uh,
- 21:37Speaker 1: the second test, you get to it in the morning.
- 21:40Speaker 1: You're out warming up and and does the cat and
- 21:43Speaker 1: bus hit the Aussies. McGray goes down steps on the ball,
- 21:46Speaker 1: but they win the toss and they send your weep.
- 21:49Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, what's all that about. We talk about
- 21:51Speaker 3: NASA's stupid decision at Brisbane. Rick is decision to send
- 21:55Speaker 3: us an edge bast and as stupid. I mean, you
- 21:59Speaker 3: just opening, but your best opening bowl has just been
- 22:02Speaker 3: cutted off and you've got the best spinner in the world,
- 22:06Speaker 3: Edge Baston, and you decide that you'd bowl first. And
- 22:10Speaker 3: Ricky says that it was because we batted so poorly
- 22:14Speaker 3: at Lords and our second injury wanted to put our
- 22:16Speaker 3: battles back under the pump. Bonney came into the dressing
- 22:20Speaker 3: room and said, you know what, same thing because we
- 22:22Speaker 3: thought we might have read the right it's the right,
- 22:24Speaker 3: same thing, but we need to put pressure back onto
- 22:26Speaker 3: the horsie bowlers a bit like KP did back down
- 22:29Speaker 3: and we went out and scored four hundred duns. Four
- 22:32Speaker 3: hundred duns on the first day one stage KP and
- 22:35Speaker 3: Freddie were having six in competitions. And but also we
- 22:39Speaker 3: heard what Shane one thought about his captain's decision to
- 22:43Speaker 3: bowl first was from KP.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Is that what had happened or.
- 22:49Speaker 3: You could hear him so so he's just taking shame
- 22:54Speaker 3: one out of the first innutes because it's a decent,
- 22:57Speaker 3: decent deck at edge Bastard. So with the confidence from
- 23:03Speaker 3: the captain saying might go out and express yourself, you've
- 23:06Speaker 3: got the little bit of niggle between the Australian starting
- 23:11Speaker 3: at the start of the second Test match with with
- 23:15Speaker 3: Jane Warton four hundred runs, that's basball, isn't it. That's
- 23:19Speaker 3: bassball basball?
- 23:25Speaker 1: Chris message if that they also better pretty rapidly times
- 23:27Speaker 1: and Metty Hayden may better rapidly.
- 23:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I said, Gilcrest batted rapidly. But yeah, so to
- 23:36Speaker 3: go out and score four hundred runs in the first
- 23:38Speaker 3: innings was just some and we lost overs as well.
- 23:43Speaker 3: We didn't play in the entire day. We lost ten
- 23:45Speaker 3: or fifteen overs to bad light and so that was
- 23:49Speaker 3: a huge confidence boost and that's why we smashed you.
- 23:53Speaker 3: It's bast by two runs.
- 24:00Speaker 2: Talking out in that last day growing up in Australia
- 24:02Speaker 2: played great.
- 24:03Speaker 1: Crickets and he said, no, we're going to done a position,
- 24:07Speaker 1: surely not videos you have to you have to finish
- 24:10Speaker 1: him off. And there was a couple of you know,
- 24:12Speaker 1: there's a couple of drop catches. There was some moments
- 24:14Speaker 1: and but the chance came and I asked the Aussie
- 24:18Speaker 1: cricketers back in some vision of that dismissal and.
- 24:23Speaker 3: He didn't have.
- 24:24Speaker 2: He didn't have. He's cloud on their best but.
- 24:28Speaker 3: It was. It was. And Simon Jones a couple of
- 24:33Speaker 3: was earlier dropped from down at third man and John
- 24:37Speaker 3: was one of my best mates. And I was thinking
- 24:40Speaker 3: he's going to be crucified the amount of crap he's
- 24:43Speaker 3: going to get for dropping the ashes, because if we
- 24:46Speaker 3: had lost that Test match, it had been a completely
- 24:49Speaker 3: different series because to come back from to nil against
- 24:53Speaker 3: that side was almost in an impossible situation because you
- 24:58Speaker 3: didn't do that against that side, so I thought he's
- 25:01Speaker 3: gonna he's dropped the ashes. And then Bretley smashed the
- 25:06Speaker 3: ball through covers. We still had an extra cover up
- 25:10Speaker 3: and I thought, what's kp doing out there? But it
- 25:12Speaker 3: was only one and then obviously Kaspovich gloved the ball
- 25:17Speaker 3: down the leg side, which he did. He loved it,
- 25:19Speaker 3: but he didn't appeal, He didn't say it didn't look
- 25:24Speaker 3: like he was angry because his hand wasn't He didn't
- 25:27Speaker 3: have a clue. So if the bad didn't have a clue,
- 25:30Speaker 3: the umpire just saw the glove. We didn't have a clue.
- 25:34Speaker 3: It was just an amazing relief of energy, thinking, right then,
- 25:40Speaker 3: we've gone from cruising this game to losing the game
- 25:43Speaker 3: to winning the game. And that's what that series was like.
- 25:49Speaker 3: All the way through the next three test matches that
- 25:51Speaker 3: there was ebbs and floors, and there was winners and
- 25:54Speaker 3: losers every day. But to finally get over the line
- 25:58Speaker 3: to go one all against Australia at home, it was
- 26:04Speaker 3: it was a huge confidence boost.
- 26:08Speaker 1: You get to you get to old Drafford, warn tastes
- 26:13Speaker 1: six hundred wik gets, Trustopic Vaughn, you kept him makes
- 26:17Speaker 1: one hundred and sixty six. McGrath has his worst every
- 26:20Speaker 1: figures into his cricket, doesn't take a week at nine
- 26:22Speaker 1: for eighty six rain on day three warn he makes
- 26:25Speaker 1: a ninety pointing Men of the Match in that one.
- 26:30Speaker 2: But you still almost get them. Lee McGrath survived twenty
- 26:33Speaker 2: four balls and it's a draw.
- 26:36Speaker 3: Yeah, made you say you've touched on that before. It's
- 26:42Speaker 3: when you're so close to winning and you don't quite
- 26:44Speaker 3: get them. It's like losing because your expectations you win,
- 26:50Speaker 3: you win, you win if you if you're gonna draw,
- 26:53Speaker 3: you're gonna lose the game. You put the defensive bowers
- 26:56Speaker 3: to say out as a batle's fault. It was the
- 26:58Speaker 3: bowler's fault. It was the umpire as well, the weathersfold.
- 27:01Speaker 3: You come up with excuses, but if you're gonna win, win, win,
- 27:05Speaker 3: and you don't quite get there, it's like the rugged
- 27:07Speaker 3: being pulled out from underneath your feet. And I remember
- 27:11Speaker 3: Varney pulling us all into the square and pointing at
- 27:14Speaker 3: the Australian dressing room and you touched on it. There
- 27:17Speaker 3: were high five and hugging and kissing like they've won
- 27:19Speaker 3: the series, not just drawn again against US. They were
- 27:23Speaker 3: celebrating like they've won the series against US and they've
- 27:26Speaker 3: just held out for a draw. And that's to me
- 27:30Speaker 3: when the mighty Australian aura just went. There were just
- 27:34Speaker 3: eleven blokes with the same insecurity as the same frailties
- 27:37Speaker 3: that we had. They were up against the pump, they
- 27:40Speaker 3: were under pressure and they were relieved that they haven't
- 27:44Speaker 3: lost and Vonnie said, we've gotten by the ding Dan dudes,
- 27:47Speaker 3: we're going to go on and win the s And
- 27:49Speaker 3: to me that that was the Edge Bass and Test
- 27:53Speaker 3: match was pivotal. But that moment, there was the time
- 27:59Speaker 3: where I thought, you know what, we are going to
- 28:01Speaker 3: go on and win that series. I knew we had
- 28:02Speaker 3: a fantastic chance before we started. I thought lords was
- 28:07Speaker 3: a little bit of kick in the go nuts. Then
- 28:10Speaker 3: Edge Baston was okay, like we've we've proved we can
- 28:13Speaker 3: do it. Old Trafford. I thought, you know what, at
- 28:17Speaker 3: the end of the game, we've blown our chance because
- 28:20Speaker 3: you don't get second chances against Australia. They're not the
- 28:24Speaker 3: side that we'll let you repeat yourself. But then the
- 28:30Speaker 3: celebrations after that was just a huge confidence boost and
- 28:35Speaker 3: a real positive momentum shift for us.
- 28:39Speaker 2: We get to trade bridge.
- 28:41Speaker 1: You take five O the test, but it's bloody tight.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Gary Pratt runs out. Ricky I don't know if you've
- 28:50Speaker 1: if you've spoken, Ricky sets and he was pretty rattled
- 28:53Speaker 1: by it all, like you know seven and that last
- 28:59Speaker 1: day and you and actually Jars go ahead.
- 29:02Speaker 2: When he's the guide. England felt more confidently. Chris, now.
- 29:09Speaker 3: That Gary Pratt run out. I was chasing after the ball,
- 29:14Speaker 3: try to stop it going for a boundary. So I'm
- 29:16Speaker 3: sprinting like a blue hours flying to stop it. But
- 29:19Speaker 3: it straight to cover and runs. It's a stupid run
- 29:23Speaker 3: to start with. And he said, we were cheating because
- 29:28Speaker 3: one of our balls is off the pitch game. It
- 29:33Speaker 3: was in the back of an ambulance going to the hospital.
- 29:35Speaker 3: So what do you what do you want to do?
- 29:37Speaker 3: Put on another fast ball at the field? Obviously we're
- 29:39Speaker 3: going to put you. You don't carry bad fields around
- 29:43Speaker 3: to be the twelfth man. So we had a good
- 29:45Speaker 3: fielder out, but it is it straight to cover and
- 29:47Speaker 3: none was his problem. But yeah, it got tight. I
- 29:51Speaker 3: mean we made them follow on for the first time.
- 29:53Speaker 1: For first sceneds and knocked them for two hundred and
- 30:00Speaker 1: nineteen and then they every bend of a two hundred
- 30:02Speaker 1: ninety seven, Yeah, I did take your target.
- 30:06Speaker 3: Yeah, so one hundred and twenty eight was it? Yeah, yeah,
- 30:13Speaker 3: so we will lose wickets. I'm a nervous watcher. As
- 30:17Speaker 3: we we discussed my first Test match, I was breaking
- 30:21Speaker 3: it having to go.
- 30:22Speaker 2: When you and you walk around, you see or you
- 30:24Speaker 2: walk around, what were you doing?
- 30:25Speaker 3: Like I was in the I was in the physios
- 30:27Speaker 3: room hiding. So there's split levels of trumperage. So you're
- 30:32Speaker 3: upstairs so there's a changing room, then there's upstairs into
- 30:37Speaker 3: the physio's room and shower room. And I was in
- 30:40Speaker 3: the fizzials room listening to it on the radio and thinking, ship,
- 30:44Speaker 3: I'm gonna have to get padded up too, So I
- 30:46Speaker 3: come downstairs to get my pads on. When I say
- 30:48Speaker 3: Andrew flintoss stumps tumbling towards towards Gilly. Then I saw
- 30:54Speaker 3: Garret Jones trying to smash him one back into to Leicester.
- 30:57Speaker 3: I had to go back and I'm shit in it,
- 31:02Speaker 3: shaking like a leaf. You get out into the middle,
- 31:06Speaker 3: you take a big, deep breath and say right, And
- 31:07Speaker 3: this is why we play sports for moments like this,
- 31:11Speaker 3: and this is why we've done all that hard moments
- 31:14Speaker 3: like this. So you walk to the middle thinking, you
- 31:17Speaker 3: know what, I only need twelve. I can edge twelve.
- 31:22Speaker 3: So you go over there about you see Gilo. He
- 31:25Speaker 3: tells me that Bratley's bowling fairly fast and Shane Want's
- 31:28Speaker 3: turning it both ways. So yeah, it was a nervous
- 31:34Speaker 3: time I saw it. I still haven't watched this series
- 31:41Speaker 3: back yet. It's been twenty years. I haven't watched it back.
- 31:44Speaker 3: I've got the DVDs and the cup and everything. I've
- 31:46Speaker 3: seen highlights, and there was highlights on the TV the
- 31:50Speaker 3: other day and Richard Benno was commentated on and over.
- 31:55Speaker 3: I think I might have scored eight in that over
- 31:58Speaker 3: clear two through. I clipped. I put my back in
- 32:01Speaker 3: the way at Brettley and it went through the covers
- 32:03Speaker 3: for two, and then edged him down to find leg
- 32:06Speaker 3: for two. And then he bought me a full toss
- 32:08Speaker 3: which I've smashed through through the covers and if it
- 32:12Speaker 3: hadn't been for the fans going, it wouldn't have reached
- 32:16Speaker 3: but scored eight. Richard Benno said that was an over
- 32:21Speaker 3: played with a great sense of skill. And maturity from
- 32:26Speaker 3: Matty Ogd. It's talking about by batting and then Gino
- 32:34Speaker 3: next door smashes it was a final and shot. I'll
- 32:43Speaker 3: have to do this left left, left handed batter batted
- 32:46Speaker 3: the four or five, but he smashes it full tosses
- 32:53Speaker 3: and it hits the shimpads and it should have been
- 32:56Speaker 3: for four and has gone on a balcony. I've gone, oh,
- 33:03Speaker 3: We've had to read group. And then it's the funny
- 33:07Speaker 3: thing is that I don't back when we win, so
- 33:10Speaker 3: I'm not normally at the crease. One win. We don't
- 33:12Speaker 3: normally win against Australia. We only needed it might have
- 33:18Speaker 3: been only one to win.
- 33:19Speaker 1: Jarles has just clipped it into into the peads of
- 33:23Speaker 1: when you think, haven't it's whapped.
- 33:25Speaker 3: It where and then and then we're trying to negotiate
- 33:30Speaker 3: whether we're on two or three? Uh what happens and
- 33:34Speaker 3: walking off with Gilo in front of the boming army
- 33:37Speaker 3: and the crowds rupting and everything else. To one up
- 33:40Speaker 3: in the Ashes series was it was a feeling I'll
- 33:43Speaker 3: never forget. It was. Obviously I'm not known for my batting.
- 33:46Speaker 3: My son rips me about do you know what you
- 33:49Speaker 3: were a bowler and everybody only remembers your shot. Wasn't
- 33:54Speaker 3: just one shot.
- 33:56Speaker 2: He's seen the highlights.
- 33:59Speaker 3: Yeah, he's eighteen now, so he's he's.
- 34:03Speaker 2: Allowed to watch it legally. I want to watch you, bat.
- 34:07Speaker 3: He has to have a beer first though, watching.
- 34:13Speaker 2: So I mean you were too one up, but your
- 34:15Speaker 2: job is still to be done. Yeah, I know that that.
- 34:17Speaker 1: I'm told that the forecast have to be dodgy when
- 34:19Speaker 1: you get to the oval, but you've got to get there.
- 34:21Speaker 2: Yeah, you got the upper hand, but but.
- 34:26Speaker 3: There's a break in between as well. Okay, it wasn't
- 34:31Speaker 3: just backed about that. There was about ten days I
- 34:33Speaker 3: think in between.
- 34:34Speaker 2: I think it was a setember tests from memory it was, Yeah,
- 34:37Speaker 2: it was.
- 34:38Speaker 3: It was late on, really late, and then it should
- 34:41Speaker 3: We've now got a different pressure because we're not catching up.
- 34:45Speaker 3: We're not trying to be the impostures anymore, where we've
- 34:50Speaker 3: now got to win or we don't have to win,
- 34:53Speaker 3: we have to we have to maintain and that was
- 34:56Speaker 3: a it's a different kind of feeling and we're not
- 35:01Speaker 3: We were used to it because we were unbeaten in
- 35:04Speaker 3: two thousand and four, but not against Australia, so we
- 35:08Speaker 3: got as you said we went. There was a little
- 35:10Speaker 3: bit of weather around and the biggest thing for me
- 35:13Speaker 3: that I remember that Test match was the Australians coming
- 35:17Speaker 3: off Hayden. They come up with a bad light a lot.
- 35:25Speaker 3: What the freak are you doing? You have to win
- 35:27Speaker 3: this Test match but you're off and to me that
- 35:30Speaker 3: was another white flag surrender. Well it wasn't a normally
- 35:36Speaker 3: the Australian push your chest out right, we'll go out
- 35:38Speaker 3: and we'll smack it all over because we were on
- 35:43Speaker 3: top and I think we were. They were scared of
- 35:45Speaker 3: Steve Armison, not me. They went in for bad light
- 35:51Speaker 3: and I couldn't understand that this decision.
- 35:56Speaker 1: Because you basically you've made I think three seventy three
- 35:58Speaker 1: in the first sities. But I think it was hell
- 36:00Speaker 1: before the first time. And then they took light.
- 36:02Speaker 2: Again the second day they took lights.
- 36:05Speaker 3: Yeah, I just couldn't every time they took from that
- 36:08Speaker 3: Test match, I couldn't understand what they were doing. So
- 36:13Speaker 3: so I said, there was two things I remember was
- 36:15Speaker 3: the Australians taking bad light and KP smashing it. And
- 36:22Speaker 3: I say smashing it. His first ball was he went
- 36:25Speaker 3: in on a hat trick Glen mcgra and it was
- 36:29Speaker 3: it got hit on the shoulder and got caught, and
- 36:32Speaker 3: from the dressing room I thought it was out. I
- 36:36Speaker 3: thought he'd loved it and all, and he batted like
- 36:41Speaker 3: a cat on hop tin roofs. He came in for
- 36:43Speaker 3: lunch and Vonnie just went just go out and smash it,
- 36:48Speaker 3: and he did. He went out and he was giving
- 36:50Speaker 3: it the old try and pull and up Tait and
- 36:53Speaker 3: Lee and some of them. He was middling out of
- 36:55Speaker 3: the ground some of his top edge and shame warn
- 36:58Speaker 3: dropped the catch. It was you know, I was a
- 37:02Speaker 3: nervous watching batting. That did not help, watching flail his
- 37:10Speaker 3: battle bout to all parts, getting dropped, getting half chances
- 37:14Speaker 3: smacking it out of the park again. I was hiding
- 37:17Speaker 3: in the coaches room this time. So there was a
- 37:19Speaker 3: coaches room on the side of the changing rooms and
- 37:23Speaker 3: me and Ashley Giles were playing a game of cards.
- 37:25Speaker 3: I can't remember what cards it was. It wasn't proper
- 37:28Speaker 3: playing cards. It was something like misfits or who knows,
- 37:35Speaker 3: just to try and.
- 37:37Speaker 2: Get straight.
- 37:39Speaker 3: But watching that because that was scary. This this bit
- 37:43Speaker 3: was all right. So we were hiding the but Gylo
- 37:47Speaker 3: scored fifty. He went out and fift in that so
- 37:51Speaker 3: he played remarkably well. I can remember I went out
- 37:55Speaker 3: into bat and Brettley he knew when Brettley was pissed
- 38:00Speaker 3: off and started getting it and most of all the
- 38:05Speaker 3: quickest spelling bowled at me at the Oval and I said,
- 38:08Speaker 3: have I annoyed you? And he said no, I'm just
- 38:12Speaker 3: pissed off where this series has gotten and so and
- 38:15Speaker 3: any bowl quite quickly at me at the Oval. But yeah,
- 38:21Speaker 3: just to see KP and Gilo put on a partnership
- 38:23Speaker 3: and then to be out there when Glo hit his fifty,
- 38:26Speaker 3: was again batting well, not my bawling, my batt I
- 38:31Speaker 3: remember batting more than my bowling in that series.
- 38:34Speaker 1: Well, I mean, I think he took four wickets in
- 38:36Speaker 1: that match. I think it was for the series. It
- 38:38Speaker 1: was a pretty series of the hundred to go, but yeah,
- 38:43Speaker 1: it was. It was.
- 38:45Speaker 3: It was a great I remember going back to to
- 38:50Speaker 3: trent Bridge. Piers Morgan was sat in front of the wives.
- 38:58Speaker 3: I get put onto bowl and he says, what on
- 39:01Speaker 3: earth are we bowling this clown for? And he's in
- 39:05Speaker 3: front of my missus, Rachel flint Off. No, no, no,
- 39:12Speaker 3: that's my wife. Rachel Flintoff wrapped him on the shoulder
- 39:15Speaker 3: and said that Peers, you've got to be careful what
- 39:17Speaker 3: you say around here because you never know who you
- 39:20Speaker 3: sat with. So then I come on the ball. I
- 39:24Speaker 3: take three wickets fairly quickly, and Pears Morgan turns around
- 39:28Speaker 3: and says, I think I your husband and apology, and
- 39:32Speaker 3: so I just went, it's all right. My husband's just
- 39:34Speaker 3: made you look like a complete and not at tool.
- 39:37Speaker 2: I love that.
- 39:39Speaker 3: I thought that that's brilliant.
- 39:42Speaker 2: I love that.
- 39:45Speaker 1: And you know there was we tacked at the start
- 39:47Speaker 1: like there were great in the Australian team and then
- 39:50Speaker 1: English team. He went through it just fantastic players from
- 39:53Speaker 1: from the top to the bottom.
- 39:55Speaker 2: Andrew Flintoff.
- 39:57Speaker 1: Runs twenty wickets, which a think it was the first
- 40:00Speaker 1: since both of them around to do that, and to
- 40:03Speaker 1: do that in that series is a pretty phenomenal sort
- 40:07Speaker 1: of performance.
- 40:08Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean Freddy had not played against Australia before
- 40:12Speaker 3: and he got be in his bonnets and right then
- 40:14Speaker 3: I want to see how good I actually am and
- 40:19Speaker 3: was phenomenal in that series of great talent. Man picked
- 40:23Speaker 3: up vital look, it scored some vital ones. But as
- 40:26Speaker 3: you said, like Ben Stalks, you look to your inspirational
- 40:31Speaker 3: players to stand up and be counted. And that's exactly
- 40:35Speaker 3: what Freddy did. He stood up and be counted. He
- 40:38Speaker 3: got on that. We got on my tips by the
- 40:40Speaker 3: amount of times he put rocket Man on the on
- 40:43Speaker 3: the on the speaker, so over time we went out
- 40:48Speaker 3: to offer tea or for launch if the rocket Man
- 40:51Speaker 3: was blaming out. Hence John and it was his testimonial
- 40:55Speaker 3: and he got all two and he put and John
- 41:00Speaker 3: on two. He got up and sang rocket Man with
- 41:03Speaker 3: Elton John. It was it was amazing the amount. But
- 41:09Speaker 3: you know, we talk about how good Andrew Flintoff was,
- 41:14Speaker 3: how good Shane warn was that series, how cricket was
- 41:19Speaker 3: was the real winner because although we were on treastful TV,
- 41:24Speaker 3: we're on front pages, back pages, middle pages. We were
- 41:27Speaker 3: on Channel four. The grati gratifying thing. The best thing
- 41:33Speaker 3: that came out of that series is that when I
- 41:36Speaker 3: go around to cricket clubs and do presentation nights or
- 41:39Speaker 3: to to do award or you get stopped on a street.
- 41:44Speaker 3: You said, Joe, I want to thank you because our
- 41:47Speaker 3: club had twenty people, twenty youngsters playing cricket before that series.
- 41:54Speaker 3: Halfway through that series we had one hundred and twenty.
- 41:57Speaker 3: So we inspired a generation to to pick up a bat,
- 42:00Speaker 3: to pick up a the ball, to get down to
- 42:02Speaker 3: their cricket club. And to me, that overrides everything that
- 42:07Speaker 3: we inspired a generation to start playing cricket. Joe Route
- 42:12Speaker 3: went to second in the leading run scorers, he mentioned
- 42:17Speaker 3: two thousand and five in his interview after he'd gone
- 42:22Speaker 3: behind Sachin Tendulk, And that is this original. You play
- 42:26Speaker 3: sport to leave a legacy and to inspire a generation.
- 42:29Speaker 3: How many times you see Wimbledon on and you see
- 42:31Speaker 3: kids get out of the tennis rackets for two weeks
- 42:34Speaker 3: and then put them away. So to have people come
- 42:38Speaker 3: up twenty years later saying I know where I was
- 42:41Speaker 3: during each Test match, twenty or thirty year olds now
- 42:45Speaker 3: called thirty odd year olds now coming up and saying
- 42:48Speaker 3: you're the reason we started playing playing cricket is why
- 42:54Speaker 3: you play sport. Yes, it was fantastic at the time
- 42:57Speaker 3: and it was brilliant, but that we're still talking about
- 43:02Speaker 3: it twenty years off. So that to me is the
- 43:05Speaker 3: best thing about that series.
- 43:07Speaker 1: In the way you're talking and you talk about Charles
- 43:09Speaker 1: and I think when I spected your add he was saying,
- 43:12Speaker 1: how a group of you guys or a few of
- 43:14Speaker 1: them caught up recently, you know.
- 43:16Speaker 2: To talk about defect. I mean, it's a pretty a
- 43:20Speaker 2: special thing you have.
- 43:23Speaker 1: You have the bass ride to where you have all
- 43:26Speaker 1: the shenanigans that go on fantastic, but you have the
- 43:31Speaker 1: lifelong makeshifts twenty easy on the track.
- 43:33Speaker 3: And it's amazing how you see it in all sports
- 43:37Speaker 3: and here about. But as soon as you get back
- 43:39Speaker 3: into a room stack you've never been away. The banter,
- 43:42Speaker 3: the camaraderie, the love that you feel for each other,
- 43:47Speaker 3: it just comes back instantly, which is is why we
- 43:53Speaker 3: play sports. It's why we love the game. It gives
- 43:58Speaker 3: your lifelong friends and memories. And I've still got the
- 44:02Speaker 3: memories to go. And I finally, and I said at
- 44:05Speaker 3: the time, at the end of two thousand and five,
- 44:08Speaker 3: I'll watch it when I've got grandkids with a pipe.
- 44:11Speaker 3: Sating with your granddad used to be good. I ain't
- 44:14Speaker 3: a granddad yet, so.
- 44:17Speaker 2: You can hold on.
- 44:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm holding on as long as possible. So, yeah,
- 44:23Speaker 3: twenty years on, still talking about it.
- 44:26Speaker 2: Well, you know, mindfully you've got the beautiful Doberman.
- 44:32Speaker 3: That's that's what I'm doing underneath it, and.
- 44:34Speaker 2: He's ready to go.
- 44:35Speaker 1: So I'll ask you right there, he's ready to go
- 44:39Speaker 1: for a big walk out in those fields. So I'll
- 44:41Speaker 1: ask you one last one before we go. What's going
- 44:44Speaker 1: to happen this summer?
- 44:48Speaker 3: So there's going to be results in every game. I
- 44:51Speaker 3: think your pictures a result wickets nowadays.
- 44:55Speaker 2: I think would you have liked your ball on those
- 44:57Speaker 2: ones better?
- 44:59Speaker 3: Better than the ones that were flat? I think both
- 45:03Speaker 3: ball and attacks will take twenty wickets. I don't think
- 45:07Speaker 3: our our batters will now wondering not to be rooved
- 45:12Speaker 3: against your top five. But it's not a right. I
- 45:16Speaker 3: can name you the top five and you can put
- 45:19Speaker 3: them in any order and we'll be all right. Before
- 45:22Speaker 3: the Test selection you couldn't name them. So the batting
- 45:26Speaker 3: is going to be the weaker link for you. Results
- 45:30Speaker 3: in every game, we're going to win one more than.
- 45:33Speaker 2: You three to two or is it to wash out
- 45:36Speaker 2: and Sydney as always?
- 45:39Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like playing in Manchester?
- 45:42Speaker 2: Is it like?
- 45:47Speaker 1: Now we've got I've got to say it's been an
- 45:49Speaker 1: absolute thrill and I really appreciate the walk down memory Line.
- 45:54Speaker 1: It's yeah, a pleasure to have you on the follow
- 45:56Speaker 1: on and look forward to UH to see what nfolds
- 46:00Speaker 1: of the summer. But you take that one for a walk.
- 46:04Speaker 3: Oh, thank you very much. Enjoy enjoy watching it live.
- 46:07Speaker 2: Thanks so much for your time with There's
