Latest / The One Small Change Podcast / Sprints, Success, and Clarity for the Last Quarter
Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to the One Small Change. I am thrilled, as always,
- 0:04that you're taking time to embark on this journey of exploration and
- 0:08transformation. And I'm your host, Yvonne McCoy, and I bring almost 30
- 0:11years of entrepreneurial experience and a passion for
- 0:15discovering growth through the power of seemingly small change.
- 0:19And I'm so glad that you're here with me. And this is my
- 0:23special quarterly clarity check in.
- 0:27Because it's important that we take a look
- 0:30at our business on a regular basis. It doesn't have to be a
- 0:34quarterly one, but we are at the beginning of
- 0:37the last quarter and there's lots going on that I need to talk to you
- 0:41about. So one of the things that I want to share with you
- 0:45is my strategic steps. It's a model
- 0:49for getting things done, and it's really easy. It
- 0:52stands for Stop, Think,
- 0:57Evaluate, Proceed, and Succeed.
- 1:01And so I'm going to tell you how this applies to
- 1:05this last quarter. So the first thing is stop
- 1:09what's working well and why? Because so often the
- 1:12first thing we do is look at what we think is wrong.
- 1:17And it's really important to come from a place of strength and what's working.
- 1:20So you want to identify what you've done so far this year that's been
- 1:24successful and why, because that is
- 1:28where you are going to have more success quickly. And I want to talk to
- 1:32you about the rule of three. So if you take the things that
- 1:35have been successful, can you use them in three different ways?
- 1:39Can you, let's say you have a podcast,
- 1:43so you've got your podcast that's successful.
- 1:46What is it that you can do with the guests that are on the podcast
- 1:50to continue that success? How else can you use the
- 1:54podcast? So one of the things that I try to do and haven't been able
- 1:57to do much lately is take
- 2:01the podcast episode. If I'm listing something in my newsletter
- 2:05or somebody's event, put their podcast episode there along
- 2:09with what their events so people get to know more about them. So find three
- 2:13ways to use everything that you're doing, and it's going to
- 2:16accelerate your growth. Clear out the cutter
- 2:19clutter, stop all the draining projects that you're doing, things that
- 2:23you know are not really serving you.
- 2:27You know, that could be taking, you know,
- 2:32ending some of the services that you have that
- 2:35every time it pops up, you're going, oh, my God, I can't believe I haven't
- 2:38done anything with this yet. You know, So a big shift is
- 2:42realizing that when you're, when you're stopping, you're only
- 2:45pausing. You're not really quitting. You're choosing to invest your energy more
- 2:49wisely and assess. And again, I will say
- 2:53focus on you. Focus on what's working well, what,
- 2:57what you do well. Right. Double down on
- 3:00proven strategies. And that's when clarity shows up.
- 3:04Clarity comes from getting rid
- 3:08of the fuzzy stuff, you know, and not adding more stuff.
- 3:11Clarity can be a real accelerator. So the next one
- 3:15is think how would you like it ideally to be? A lot of times we
- 3:18don't, especially when we're looking short term, we don't
- 3:22look at what we need to go through
- 3:26to get to the long term result that we want. So one of the first
- 3:29things I want you to say is when we're in this last quarter,
- 3:32I want you to think beyond December. I want you to think
- 3:36about what is it going to look at by the end of January.
- 3:40Because I think that puts you in a totally different time
- 3:43frame and a process, right? So you're like,
- 3:47okay, by the time I get to the end of December, I'm,
- 3:51you know, I'm thinking I just want to have the biggest, you know,
- 3:54increase my revenue as much as possible. But by the time I get to the
- 3:58end of January, I actually want to have a new program that I
- 4:01can launch so that you're actually working on it
- 4:06as you go through the end of the year and, and putting in down the
- 4:09seeds that you need to so that that's actually going to work. So one of
- 4:13the things that I like to use when I'm trying to get a lot done
- 4:16in a short amount of time is I like to have sprints.
- 4:20Now I typically do a 21 day sprint. So a 21
- 4:24day sprint, if you do it continuously
- 4:27through the last quarter actually gives you like four mini months. And the way that
- 4:31I came up with 21 days is typically we are really
- 4:35focused the first week and the last week and we kind of lose momentum in
- 4:39week two and three. But if you are only doing three
- 4:42weeks, you've got a first week, a middle week and a last
- 4:46week. So you don't have time to lose focus, but you cannot
- 4:49live this way. So if you're going to do some 21 day focus,
- 4:53you know, sprints, you're only going to want to do two or three of them
- 4:57before now and the end of the year. But sprints can be different
- 5:00lengths too. You can have really short sprints, like a four day
- 5:04sprint where you're really focused on something that you're going to do, or you could
- 5:08have a 10 day sprint. I think the secret to a sprint
- 5:11is not having the same time frame that you're used to. So
- 5:15typically you don't want to have a seven day or a 14 day
- 5:18sprint because those are time frames that we're used to.
- 5:22So I would say to you, make sure that you do at least one
- 5:26sprint during between now and the
- 5:29end of the year, and at least two between now and
- 5:33the end of January. One of the things that you
- 5:37can do is when you do sprints, it's really going
- 5:40to make you focus on what you do, which means you're going to have even
- 5:43more clarity. And so you're going to see that you're going to
- 5:47move a whole lot faster. The next thing
- 5:51is evaluate. So part of what you want to do while you're
- 5:55evaluating is look at what you prioritize and what you
- 5:58focus on. So again, we're going back to that question of
- 6:02what's working? Where did I see results? Where did
- 6:05I waste my energy? Where did I spend more
- 6:09money than I wanted? Where did I bring in money? So one of
- 6:13the things that you can do is ask yourself some
- 6:17of these questions. Where did I see the most results
- 6:21this year and can I duplicate them this
- 6:25quarter? What's it costing me in
- 6:28money but not giving me a return on my investment? So
- 6:32again, we talked about subscriptions. If you have subscriptions that you're
- 6:36paying for, you're not using, get rid of them,
- 6:40right? Where are you wasting your energy?
- 6:44How many times have you showed up for things and it wasn't quite
- 6:48right? So maybe you don't drop it all together. Maybe you say,
- 6:53I really like this networking group, but I'm only going to go
- 6:57twice a month instead of every week, right? So you want to
- 7:00look at how much you know your return on investment is not
- 7:05just money, it is also what you're
- 7:08spending in energy,
- 7:12creativity. So if you're in a situation
- 7:16and it seems like you're giving, giving, giving and not getting
- 7:20anything back, that's draining you, right? Not that
- 7:23it isn't good to give, but your energy has
- 7:27a lot to do with what you can accomplish. So you want
- 7:31to check when you're looking at your resources,
- 7:36you want to look at money, you want to look at time, you want to
- 7:39look at relationships, you want to look at your health, you want to
- 7:43look at all these things because you are a single
- 7:47person and you have a business and you have a personal life.
- 7:50So the question is, where do I want to
- 7:54focus my energy in this next four months?
- 7:58So That I can have the outcome that I
- 8:02want. All right? And so
- 8:07the other part that sometimes people don't look at is you
- 8:11can't grow if you can't measure it.
- 8:14Right? And that tends to. To go
- 8:18against our grain sometimes, especially if we are heart centered.
- 8:22But the thing is, we all have
- 8:25processes. We all have
- 8:29places where you can have benchmarks and numbers that you can look at.
- 8:33I enter, you know, I did 7:1 on ones,
- 8:37right? Of the 7:1 on ones, I only converted one.
- 8:41Okay. But earlier I only did 4:1
- 8:45on ones and I converted two. So what's the difference?
- 8:49Right? If you hadn't looked at the numbers, you wouldn't be
- 8:53aware that there was a difference or how big that that difference
- 8:56was. So evaluating is really important. And
- 9:00you do that along with your intuition, not instead
- 9:04of, you know, you need both of them.
- 9:07Okay, so the next one is proceed,
- 9:13plan your actions. All right? What are the things that
- 9:17are going to give you the biggest results?
- 9:21So the first thing you want to do again is focus. Pick one or two
- 9:24strategies that work and double down. One of the
- 9:28strategies that you can use is what
- 9:31collaborations and partnerships have you been
- 9:34successful with? See if you can do more of that, because you
- 9:38can multiply your reach and your revenue in
- 9:41collaborations. And don't forget to reconnect with past
- 9:45clients or people that you did outreach with, because
- 9:48sometimes they've already, you know, thought
- 9:52about it, they've been mulling it over. They're much
- 9:56more likely to convert faster than somebody that you've met
- 10:00new. So you want to build collaborations in your
- 10:04plan. You want to partner with others, right? You want to
- 10:07reconnect with your clients and your network, but you
- 10:11also want to be proactive, right? Very
- 10:14rarely have I ever had a plan that worked exactly
- 10:18as I wanted it to. So one of the
- 10:21things you want to do is what one of my coaches said is you want
- 10:24to practice the fryer drill before the fire. And what that
- 10:28means is you say, okay, this is my plan. I'm going to do step
- 10:32one, and I'm expecting this to happen with step
- 10:35one. What if that doesn't happen?
- 10:39What's the next thing that I'm going to do? Or you take a look and
- 10:42you say, why didn't it happen? Right? And you can
- 10:46fix your step one before you even get going. And you
- 10:50want to do that all along the way because, you know, you
- 10:54need to know, for instance, how much resource, how much time,
- 10:58that kind of thing in your plan. So kind of, you know, be
- 11:01your own best you know, person to,
- 11:05you know, devil's advocate and see if you can work out the bugs
- 11:09before you get started. And know, if something doesn't work, what's the
- 11:13next thing that you're going to do? All right,
- 11:16so the thing that's really important is
- 11:20not to confuse activity with progress. You want to
- 11:24proceed with intensity. And, you know,
- 11:28you want to make sure that you're keeping the question, what is the purpose
- 11:31of this? In your mind so that you're always looking
- 11:35to see whether or not in fact, you're getting to that purpose.
- 11:39Right? The last step is
- 11:43succeed, celebrate and repeat your
- 11:47success. Right? Now, when I say succeed, it doesn't mean
- 11:51that you necessarily got to the end of your goal. It
- 11:54means that
- 11:58you've made progress, you've moved the
- 12:01needle, that you're getting closer. And sometimes we forget that. And
- 12:05I am really bad at this, I have to say, because I will do
- 12:09something. You know, I did my first
- 12:12summit. It was amazing. My speakers were amazing.
- 12:16And yet afterwards, it was like, oh, I should have done this, or I should
- 12:19have done this, or we could have done this, or I, you know, don't second
- 12:23guess yourself. Enjoy the moment, because
- 12:28it's what will help you do it again and move on.
- 12:32And again, you want to look at what am I doing that's going to
- 12:36carry over into the next year and give me more than one benefit,
- 12:40right? The rule of three. So you want to
- 12:43celebrate your wins, the big and small, acknowledge what you do so
- 12:47you can repeat it. You want to reset,
- 12:51you want to carry the momentum forward. Don't stop with
- 12:54December. Keep going so that you're ready to launch whatever you know,
- 12:58your best year that, you know, 2026 is going to be your
- 13:01best year. But, but here's the thing. With this, with this system,
- 13:06it doesn't have to be just at a quarter. It's easy enough to, to,
- 13:10to go through that. You can use it on a regular basis. You
- 13:14could actually start every day off with this. Because one of the things that I
- 13:18know is the first two steps in this
- 13:21stop and think are probably the two
- 13:25steps that will change everything. All right? We
- 13:28tend to evaluate, we tend to come up with a plan,
- 13:32right? So those steps are pretty much ingrained in us. But
- 13:36just stopping to say what's working
- 13:40totally shifts everything, because that is not the way we are brought
- 13:44up. That is not the way we're trained. I mean, when
- 13:47I'm dealing with teams and management, one of the first things I say
- 13:51is, do you ever talk to the people on your team and tell them
- 13:55something good that they're doing without it being that sandwich. You
- 13:58did this good, but you need to fix this and hope you'll do better in
- 14:02the future, right? You did a good job on this. You
- 14:05know, I appreciate you and that's it, right?
- 14:09There's no, you gotta fix this, right? So if
- 14:13you can think about what's working well and why
- 14:18that will change whatever system and get you better results with
- 14:21whatever system you're already using, then think about
- 14:25how ideally you want it to be. Sometimes we constrain
- 14:29ourselves and we won't let ourselves think big,
- 14:32right? But if you say, okay, ideally
- 14:36I would like to have this, I would like to have a hundred
- 14:40people sign up for my workshop, right?
- 14:44Then you start to see what possibilities and you start to
- 14:47see how you have to plan accordingly based on that.
- 14:51And then again, the last step, which is celebrate your success,
- 14:56right? We tend to not do that and that kind of makes us cycle and
- 15:00go back. But I have given you a system,
- 15:04a strategic system. And so the question is,
- 15:07what did you learn that's different? So if I
- 15:11were to highlight a couple of things, I would say
- 15:14don't plan for just the end of the year, plan
- 15:18for the beginning of next year so that you are going to hit the
- 15:22ground running, right? I would
- 15:25say ask yourself what the purpose
- 15:29is as you're thinking about how would it be ideally.
- 15:33And, and you know, this is where a coach can be really,
- 15:37really, really helpful. And it, this
- 15:40is why I value my coach. Because I have a tendency and
- 15:44coaches over the year, I have a tendency to come up with a big
- 15:47side. And you know, and
- 15:51it just is exciting the way that it is. It feels good. And then you
- 15:55go, what is the purpose? Oh, okay. So
- 15:58yeah, the purpose is I want to sign up more
- 16:02people because I want them to be able to work with me.
- 16:06But I want this price point, right?
- 16:10And you know, my coach said to me,
- 16:14so sounds like a great idea. But at the price point that you're talking,
- 16:17this is not something you can start next week. You need
- 16:21much more of a lead in for this. What is something
- 16:25else? If the purpose is to get more people to sign up to work with
- 16:28you, what is something else that you can do? And that
- 16:32something else is what I said to you. Go back and see the people
- 16:36who you contacted before who are already in your network
- 16:40and see if there's something that has changed for them or make them
- 16:44so that they're closer aware. So thinking about what it
- 16:47ideally looks like can really be a
- 16:51big thing and help you.
- 16:55All right, so let's talk about some of the other challenges that are
- 16:58coming up. So I want to talk just a little bit about what I think
- 17:02are trends that I'm seeing. One of the
- 17:06trends that I'm seeing is people
- 17:10are not. People are concerned. There's a lot of
- 17:14uncertainty out there. And so as you're looking at things,
- 17:18what can you do to make people feel more
- 17:22comfortable? So people are not looking for year long commitments
- 17:25right now, from what I can tell them. And so
- 17:29the question is, do you have several ways that people can start working with
- 17:33you? Do you have one piece that is kind of an acceleration
- 17:37piece that is short like four weeks
- 17:40and maybe a two week course, Something that they can do at a price
- 17:44that they feel comfortable with, that they can get going?
- 17:48So that's something for you to, to think about. That piece then
- 17:52rolls into a longer piece, then rolls into a longer
- 17:55piece and that looks like something that is very easy
- 17:59to do. The other thing that I see happening
- 18:03is people don't people want to
- 18:06implement stuff with you, they want to walk away with
- 18:10stuff that's done. And one of the things that I've started doing with my
- 18:14clients is carving out a few minutes
- 18:17in the coaching session to actually work on whatever
- 18:21it is they need to do. So if we
- 18:25talk about them setting up a workshop,
- 18:29I will, we will stop working. You know, we'll
- 18:33take five minutes and I go, go on your calendar, find out when that's going
- 18:37to be. And so it's done. So when you leave that
- 18:40coaching session, you know what the name of, you know, we've worked out
- 18:44what the name of that workshop is going to be. We've worked out when
- 18:48the first one is going to be. We've worked out,
- 18:52you know, maybe who your partners are going to be. So you've got a
- 18:56plan that's already in action. And I'm finding
- 18:59people are moving so much faster because otherwise our
- 19:03tendency is you leave with things to
- 19:07do and then you don't think about it again until
- 19:10it's a day or so before you're talking to your coach or talking to your
- 19:14person again. This way you've got it in action and you can move
- 19:18to the next step. So people are moving a lot
- 19:21faster. All right, so that's another trend that I'm
- 19:25seeing. The other trend is
- 19:28people are looking for connection.
- 19:34And by that I mean, you know, community.
- 19:39They're looking for a place where they can share things with other people.
- 19:43And so one of the things that, that I think is so important is
- 19:47if you're, even if you're doing individual coaching, you may
- 19:51want to have a group call once a month so that other
- 19:54people that are in your coaching program have a chance to share. Now,
- 19:58again, that depends on, you know, who you're coaching and that kind of thing.
- 20:02But if not that, you probably should recommend that your
- 20:06clients be involved in a community where they can
- 20:09have other people, they can talk to, places where they
- 20:13can be the expert and the student
- 20:17and, and leave with a lot of good information. So those are
- 20:20three trends that I'm seeing. So with that in mind,
- 20:26I want to share what I've done that's a little
- 20:29bit different. So I probably put, we'll put some notes
- 20:33where a community that you can join at the end
- 20:38and you can always book a call and
- 20:42we can talk about your situation more. So I want to talk about what I've
- 20:45done since probably the last clarity thing that
- 20:49I, that I talked to you about. So my thing is
- 20:53I am taking Pilates now and
- 20:57I am finding it really amazing. It is the one
- 21:01place that I can go and shut my brain down. And so when I do
- 21:04it, I come out and I'm totally refreshed and, and I feel
- 21:08amazing because of it. So I just want to say
- 21:12to everybody, it doesn't matter how old you are, how big you
- 21:16are, there are lots of things that you can do that will
- 21:19make you feel better, that will help you with
- 21:23the way that you feel and, you know, that are kind of
- 21:27exciting. And it, you know, I have to say, it isn't always pretty when
- 21:31I do it, but I definitely feel
- 21:34better for, for it. So I want to
- 21:40make sure I do the commercial right. So make
- 21:43sure that you subscribe, you share, you engage
- 21:47with on social media about the podcast.
- 21:51And the reason that I do it again is partially for community,
- 21:55that I want to be able to introduce you to people that you may not
- 21:59have met and to ideas that are helpful, fuel your, you know,
- 22:02your, your quest for growth and impact. And I hope
- 22:06that you will join me again for the one small change and
- 22:10see what things we can do
- 22:13that will make our world have a bolder
- 22:17vision and more innovative possibilities.
- 22:21And so if I were to say
- 22:25something. Last words, One of my favorite
- 22:29mantras, I have a couple, but one of my favorite mantras is
- 22:33it doesn't matter how many times you fall down, it only matters how many times
- 22:37you get up and how fast. And this came about
- 22:40from when I was losing weight and you know, it's
- 22:44kind of like if you say, I'll start again next month or next year,
- 22:48you know, it's going to take you forever. But if you can start right away,
- 22:52if you realize what's going on and. And
- 22:55see that you can
- 22:59keep going in the direction that you want to, you don't have to. You don't
- 23:03have to be sidetracked. I think it makes all the difference in the world.
- 23:07And so this is a really important time to take that lesson
- 23:10seriously, because as you look at what you're doing,
- 23:14right, and you pick the things that are working, it's going to
- 23:18get you there faster, right? They may be
- 23:22small things, but two or three things that work will give you
- 23:26exponential results that you're not expecting. And
- 23:30my last couple of things I want to say to you is if
- 23:33you're not a numbers person, it's a good time to start thinking
- 23:37about it so that you can really see where in the process
- 23:41things are not working. So you have comparisons. It's not a
- 23:44judgment, right? It's not a judgment
- 23:48that it's. I only had so many people at my workshop,
- 23:52right? It's like this time I had nine people, but I made two
- 23:56sales. This time I had 20 people, and I made no sales.
- 24:00So that it's about taking a look at the puzzle pieces and
