Latest / Cardinal Territory: A St. Louis Cardinals Podcast / Why Masyn Winn is playing through a meniscus tear
Transcript
- 0:06Speaker 1: It's Thursday.
- 0:07Speaker 2: It's a Cardinals off day, and the team itself, especially
- 0:11Speaker 2: the bullpen, could really use it after last night's four
- 0:14Speaker 2: to two loss to the Seattle Mariners in thirteen innings.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Welcome back to Cardinals Territory, your official Saint Louis Cardinals
- 0:21Speaker 2: podcast on the Foul Territory Network. I'm your host Katie Woo.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Heading into the week, the Cardinals had clawed their way
- 0:29Speaker 2: back to five hundred after winning three straight series against
- 0:32Speaker 2: the Cincinnati Reds, the Athletics and the San Francisco Giants,
- 0:36Speaker 2: and then they made their way to T Mobile Park
- 0:38Speaker 2: and were promptly swept by the Mariners in three games.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Wednesday's game felt especially brutal, especially given how well pitched
- 0:45Speaker 2: it was.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Michael McGreevey posted a bounce back outing.
- 0:47Speaker 2: After he was tagged for six runs and four innings
- 0:50Speaker 2: by the Giants last week.
- 0:51Speaker 1: He limited Seattle's homer.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Happy lineup and logged a quality start six innings, one
- 0:56Speaker 2: and run, five hits, four strikeouts, zero walks. The biggest
- 1:00Speaker 2: difference for me in McGreevy start today was how aggressive
- 1:03Speaker 2: he came out.
- 1:04Speaker 1: In the first inning.
- 1:05Speaker 2: We know that's been kind of a focal point for
- 1:07Speaker 2: McGreevy is trying to establish himself and his stuff early
- 1:10Speaker 2: in games. A lot of times we've seen him come
- 1:13Speaker 2: out and kind of get hit a little hard in
- 1:14Speaker 2: the first and second innings and then settle down. He
- 1:17Speaker 2: said that he had a conversation with Sonny Gray, who said,
- 1:19Speaker 2: you need to pitch the first inning like you're a closer,
- 1:22Speaker 2: and he came out super strong against a Seattle Mariners
- 1:25Speaker 2: lineup that features Randy Rosarania.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Perhaps Cardinals fans are familiar with him.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Cal Ralely the potential American League MVP, Polio Rodriguez and
- 1:35Speaker 2: Josh Naylor. Those the first four batters the Mariners have
- 1:38Speaker 2: in their lineup must be nice to have some thumb.
- 1:39Speaker 1: But Michael McGreevy I thought pitched really well.
- 1:41Speaker 2: It's a shame that we probably won't be talking about
- 1:43Speaker 2: it too much because of what transpired after the bullpen
- 1:48Speaker 2: was also nails. Matt Swohnson continues to dominate. He and
- 1:51Speaker 2: Jojo Ramerill combined to log three innings of scoreless ball
- 1:54Speaker 2: with four strikeouts. And how about Riley O'Brien showing against
- 1:57Speaker 2: his former team in his home state to be able
- 2:00Speaker 2: to get up a bases loaded no out to jam
- 2:02Speaker 2: and hold the tie there in the eleventh was super
- 2:04Speaker 2: impressive as well. Ryan Fernandez, I thought, did a nice
- 2:07Speaker 2: job in the twelfth, but at some point the Mariners
- 2:09Speaker 2: were going to take advantage of the cardinals.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Inability to score.
- 2:13Speaker 2: They scored in the first inning on Evon Herrera solo
- 2:16Speaker 2: shot and then did not score again until the eleventh,
- 2:20Speaker 2: so it was not exactly a surprise when the first
- 2:22Speaker 2: pitch of the bottom of the thirteenth was hammered for
- 2:24Speaker 2: a walk off homer by Leo Ribas.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Tough loss for the Cardinals, who have now fallen back
- 2:30Speaker 2: to three games under five hundred. Especially frustrating because it
- 2:33Speaker 2: was such a well pitched game, I mean, from mcgrievy
- 2:36Speaker 2: to the bullpen. Yeah, Fernandez the thirteenth ultimately loses the game,
- 2:40Speaker 2: but again that comes down to the inability to score,
- 2:43Speaker 2: which is what plagued the Cardinals for the majority of
- 2:46Speaker 2: this series.
- 2:47Speaker 1: So it's frustrating.
- 2:48Speaker 2: But one thing that I want to point out from
- 2:50Speaker 2: this series, and this is not I don't want to
- 2:53Speaker 2: make this a bigger deal than it is, but I
- 2:54Speaker 2: think it was just a microcosm of what we should
- 2:56Speaker 2: be looking for as fans as media as the Cardinals
- 3:00Speaker 2: in a true rebuild season. The Cardinals, again, like I said,
- 3:03Speaker 2: do not score. For nine innings, Yvon Herrera is solo
- 3:06Speaker 2: shot off Logan Gilbert and then nothing.
- 3:08Speaker 1: They went two for twenty two.
- 3:10Speaker 2: With runners in scoring positions, so that is really a
- 3:13Speaker 2: not great But the scoring opportunity they squandered the most,
- 3:17Speaker 2: and this is including the bases loaded opportunity. They left
- 3:20Speaker 2: the runners in scoring position and second and third in
- 3:22Speaker 2: the middle innings. The biggest opportunity they squandered came in
- 3:25Speaker 2: the tenth when Herrera was the automatic runner at second base.
- 3:29Speaker 2: I'll look at my score book, because there's no way,
- 3:33Speaker 2: as I record this after midnight on the West Coast,
- 3:35Speaker 2: that I can remember thirteen innings of baseball accurately. So
- 3:39Speaker 2: we'll look at the book. Herrera is the automatic runner
- 3:44Speaker 2: in the tenth, and you have Alec Burlason who lines
- 3:48Speaker 2: out to right field, and that's a tag play for Herrera,
- 3:52Speaker 2: but for some inexplicable reason, he breaks for third base
- 3:55Speaker 2: on contact and he's about sixty percent of the way
- 3:57Speaker 2: to third base before that ball is caught in right field.
- 4:00Speaker 2: He has to scamper back to second base. By then
- 4:02Speaker 2: you can't tag up, and you can see he's frustrated.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Third base coach Pop Warner is kind of standing on
- 4:07Speaker 2: the third base box with his hands on his hips, like, hey,
- 4:09Speaker 2: what's going on.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Herrera is mad, he's evis. It's obvious.
- 4:12Speaker 2: He's smacking his leg a little bit, like you know
- 4:14Speaker 2: that he messed up.
- 4:15Speaker 1: He should have tagged.
- 4:17Speaker 2: What caught me off guard was when the next play,
- 4:20Speaker 2: Wilson Contreras is up. He lines the foul ball to
- 4:23Speaker 2: right field out of play. Herrera does the same thing.
- 4:26Speaker 2: He breaks for third again, and it's clear that he
- 4:29Speaker 2: is still thinking about the missed opportunity to tag, because
- 4:32Speaker 2: it was pretty basic knowledge to tag up on that play.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Then what happens. Contreras hits a hard hit ball to
- 4:38Speaker 2: center and it doesn't look like it's going to fall.
- 4:43Speaker 2: As far as hard as it hits, it still looks
- 4:44Speaker 2: like it's going right to Huleo Rodriguez and von Herrera
- 4:47Speaker 2: breaks for third, and Rodriguez kind of looks a little surprised,
- 4:50Speaker 2: like what's going on, easily corrals the fly ball and
- 4:53Speaker 2: just kind of lobs it to second base for an
- 4:55Speaker 2: eight six double play inning.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Over U. Yeah, you know the saying you see something
- 5:02Speaker 1: new at the ballpark each day.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Well, I had never seen a two better inning before
- 5:05Speaker 2: until Wednesday night. So that's something that overall play two critical.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Miscues on the bass paths cannot happen.
- 5:13Speaker 2: But I do want to one commend Herrera's comments after
- 5:16Speaker 2: the game talking to local media. He did not mince words.
- 5:19Speaker 2: He was there at his locker waiting for us, took
- 5:20Speaker 2: full accountability. Here's a quote that I'll read from him.
- 5:23Speaker 2: He said, uh, and I'm not using the full language here.
- 5:27Speaker 2: I fed up the first one. I thought the ball
- 5:30Speaker 2: had topspin if it was going to land, which it didn't.
- 5:33Speaker 1: I kept thinking about that and then I eft up again.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Herrera went on to say, I got to learn from that,
- 5:38Speaker 2: just try to be better. I just kept thinking trying
- 5:40Speaker 2: to make up for the first one. All of that
- 5:42Speaker 2: was in my head. So clearly this is a guy
- 5:44Speaker 2: who got caught up. But I made a mistake and
- 5:46Speaker 2: let that mistake carry over into the next play.
- 5:49Speaker 1: That can happen. He knows it, The Cardinals know it.
- 5:51Speaker 1: They kept his bat in the lineup in case the
- 5:54Speaker 1: game stayed tied. It did, but when he ended the
- 5:59Speaker 1: he was the out in the twelfth.
- 6:02Speaker 2: When it became time for him to be the automatic
- 6:03Speaker 2: runner in the thirteenth, it was not Herrera who took
- 6:05Speaker 2: over at second base. It was Jordan Walker. So that
- 6:07Speaker 2: was pretty telling to me. Here's what I really want
- 6:11Speaker 2: to point out about that play. The Saint Louis Cardinals,
- 6:14Speaker 2: at its core is a fundamentally sound baseball team.
- 6:17Speaker 1: We know this.
- 6:18Speaker 2: That's kind of just the backbone of George Kissel of
- 6:21Speaker 2: the Saint Louis Cardinals in general. But when you are
- 6:24Speaker 2: rebuilding and when you are developing developing players at the
- 6:27Speaker 2: major league level, situations like Herreras will unfortunately occur. So
- 6:31Speaker 2: when I say Cardinals baseball is going to look a
- 6:33Speaker 2: little bit different as they work through this rebuild, this
- 6:34Speaker 2: is exactly what I'm talking about. Mistakes are going to happen.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Players are going to do things that used to be
- 6:40Speaker 2: inexcusable in prior seasons with the Cardinals organization in particular.
- 6:45Speaker 2: I mean, this play didn't even show up in the
- 6:46Speaker 2: box score, but on a butt play in the tenth
- 6:49Speaker 2: with a runner on second, both Nolan Gorman and Wilson
- 6:51Speaker 2: Conterrera's crash on the ball popped up in foul territory.
- 6:54Speaker 2: There was nobody covering third base. Thomas a jac who
- 6:57Speaker 2: was playing shortstop for Mason Wynn more on him, later
- 7:00Speaker 2: broke to cover second and left third base open. That
- 7:03Speaker 2: runner could have easily advanced to third, but the Cardinals
- 7:06Speaker 2: were able to recover. Things like that, these are what
- 7:08Speaker 2: these young players are going to have to experience in
- 7:10Speaker 2: the big leagues. You can't replicate a major league environment
- 7:13Speaker 2: in Triple A. They have to learn these things at
- 7:16Speaker 2: the big league level as they go through the rebuild.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Now, it doesn't make it any easier for.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Fans, I will say, but this is the only way
- 7:22Speaker 2: these guys are going to learn. So at the end
- 7:24Speaker 2: of the day, Herrera made a mistake. Is it going
- 7:27Speaker 2: to make or break him? No? Was it frustrating for
- 7:30Speaker 2: fans watching. Was it a pivotal moment in the game. Absolutely,
- 7:34Speaker 2: But that's not why the Mariners were able to sleep
- 7:37Speaker 2: the Cardinals over the weekend. It really came down to
- 7:40Speaker 2: an inability to score against a very good pitching staff,
- 7:43Speaker 2: silver lining the Cardinals new director of pitching, Matt Pierpont,
- 7:45Speaker 2: came from the Seattle Mariners. So if you liked what
- 7:47Speaker 2: you saw from Brian Wu, George Kirby, Logan Gilbert. They
- 7:49Speaker 2: need to see Louis Castillo. You're in luck because the
- 7:52Speaker 2: guy that helped for Seattle Mariners pitching is now trying
- 7:56Speaker 2: to do the same thing for the Saint Louis Cardinals.
- 8:00Speaker 2: All right, guys, we'll take a quick break. We'll hear
- 8:01Speaker 2: from our pals at DraftKings, and then we'll get into
- 8:03Speaker 2: the Mason Win conundrum. The Cardinal shortstop has a torn
- 8:07Speaker 2: meniscus and he's going to need surgery over the off season,
- 8:10Speaker 2: and he's gonna play through it.

- 9:15Speaker 2: In case you missed it, Mason Winn is managing a
- 9:18Speaker 2: meniscus tear.
- 9:20Speaker 1: You can read about this up on the Athletic.
- 9:24Speaker 2: This came to light late Tuesday after the Cardinals five
- 9:29Speaker 2: free loss to the Seattle Mariners. Mason Winn was supposed
- 9:33Speaker 2: to be in the lineup on Tuesday. He was a
- 9:35Speaker 2: late scratch. We knew he'd been dealing with knee pain
- 9:37Speaker 2: and the Cardinals were kind of evaluating that on a
- 9:39Speaker 2: day to day basis, So when he was scratched roughly
- 9:43Speaker 2: about fifteen minutes before first pitch on Tuesday, even though
- 9:45Speaker 2: the Cardinals had not yet given an official reason, it
- 9:47Speaker 2: was pretty safe to assume that it was anything. We
- 9:51Speaker 2: got more clarity finally Tuesday night after the game, where
- 9:55Speaker 2: Mason Wynn talked to Saint Louis based reporters and Ollie
- 9:58Speaker 2: marml later disclosed right out after that that Win has
- 10:01Speaker 2: a meniscus tear and has right me and he's going
- 10:04Speaker 2: to undergo I never say this word correctly arthroscopic surgery
- 10:09Speaker 2: or a scope surgery.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Over the off season. That is a minimally minimal invasive surgery.
- 10:15Speaker 1: So I want to pump the brakes right there. Anytime
- 10:17Speaker 1: that we hear surgery, it's human nature to freak out. Okay,
- 10:20Speaker 1: this is a very limited invasive surgery. I mean he'll
- 10:24Speaker 1: be able to walk out of the room under his
- 10:26Speaker 1: own power after the surgery is done.
- 10:28Speaker 2: The Cardinals medical team does not believe that Mason Win
- 10:31Speaker 2: will have any further risk in making this tear worse.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Mason wants to play every day so the Cardinals are
- 10:38Speaker 2: going to manage him on a day by day basis
- 10:40Speaker 2: hope to avoid the il and finish the season strong.
- 10:43Speaker 2: And I think it's very clear talking to Mason how
- 10:46Speaker 2: important he feels it is for him to play every
- 10:49Speaker 2: game when healthy. So I get why fans would be like, well,
- 10:55Speaker 2: if he needs surgery, why is he playing? If he's
- 10:57Speaker 2: a torminiscus, why is he playing? So let me try
- 10:59Speaker 2: to some of these questions, because I do think it
- 11:03Speaker 2: comes across a little bit more complicated than it actually is.
- 11:08Speaker 1: I'll go ahead and read this from the Athletic.
- 11:13Speaker 2: When we talked to Mason after the game, he was
- 11:15Speaker 2: the one who first brought up the concept of surgery
- 11:18Speaker 2: happening probably as soon as the off season begins. Mason said,
- 11:21Speaker 2: some stuff is probably going to have to be done
- 11:23Speaker 2: this offseason to help me out. But I want to
- 11:25Speaker 2: finish the year as strong as possible. I hate not
- 11:27Speaker 2: playing games, but going forward, if I'm going to play
- 11:30Speaker 2: the rest of the year out, maybe taking a day
- 11:33Speaker 2: off here and there isn't a bad idea. I was
- 11:35Speaker 2: told I probably can't do too much worse to it,
- 11:38Speaker 2: So that's why I want to be out there, knock
- 11:40Speaker 2: on wood. If I can't hurt myself any further because
- 11:43Speaker 2: of this, than I want to be out there. The
- 11:45Speaker 2: Cardinals had fifteen games remaining in their schedule. Mason Winn
- 11:49Speaker 2: was hopeful he'd be able to play on Wednesday. That
- 11:50Speaker 2: was not the case. He was not in the lineup today,
- 11:52Speaker 2: was not a live option for the Cardinals on Wednesday.
- 11:55Speaker 1: With the off day on Thursday, the.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Cardinals are hoping that he'd be able to play on
- 11:59Speaker 2: Friday again if there's no further risk of making this
- 12:03Speaker 2: tear any worse, which the Cardinals medical team believes that
- 12:07Speaker 2: that is the case, and I do not, in any
- 12:12Speaker 2: sense or any capacity, believe that if it was different,
- 12:14Speaker 2: they would still let him play.
- 12:16Speaker 1: And Mason wants to be.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Out there, and the surgery that he's not gonna undergo
- 12:21Speaker 2: is not going to impact his off season or his
- 12:23Speaker 2: twenty twenty six under any means. Okay, fine, plenty of
- 12:28Speaker 2: players play, hurt, play with some sort of tear. I
- 12:33Speaker 2: think Mason is smart, and he's been very honest with
- 12:36Speaker 2: Allie Marble about when he can play and when he can't.
- 12:39Speaker 2: So we're gonna continue to see him now if things
- 12:41Speaker 2: get worse, they'll put him on the injur list. The
- 12:43Speaker 2: Cardinals are four and a half games back from the
- 12:44Speaker 2: Mets in the final wildcard spot. They're three games under
- 12:47Speaker 2: five hundred. Mathematically, yes, they're still in it. Realistically not
- 12:50Speaker 2: so much. But Mason wants to play. I'll go and
- 12:54Speaker 2: I'll continue reading some of these quotes just to give
- 12:56Speaker 2: his perspective a little bit more. Mason said, I feel
- 13:00Speaker 2: I owe it to these guys to finish the year strong.
- 13:02Speaker 2: I definitely don't want to cash in this early. Technically
- 13:05Speaker 2: we still have a shot, so I still want to
- 13:07Speaker 2: go out there and compete for that.
- 13:08Speaker 1: I want to do it for my pictures.
- 13:10Speaker 2: I know these guys really want me out there at shortstop,
- 13:12Speaker 2: and I want to be there. I'm going to have
- 13:14Speaker 2: time in the off season to recover, so I feel
- 13:15Speaker 2: like I can play this one out if things change.
- 13:19Speaker 1: There are.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Their options, right, Thomas and JC can't play shortstop. Brendan
- 13:25Speaker 2: Donovan should return on Friday. We'll have a rehab update
- 13:27Speaker 2: for him later in the episode. One thing that is
- 13:30Speaker 2: not under consideration, barring anything super unusual, is the call
- 13:34Speaker 2: up of top prospect JJ Weatherholt, who returned to the
- 13:38Speaker 2: Memphis Redbirds lineup on Wednesday after missing the last five
- 13:41Speaker 2: games with a with general soreness from a non baseball ailment,
- 13:45Speaker 2: per a team sports spokesperson, so he was a DH
- 13:48Speaker 2: from Memphis today. He'll resume back to the field as
- 13:50Speaker 2: early as Thursday, if not by the weekend, and everything
- 13:53Speaker 2: is full go there. But the Cardinals still are not
- 13:55Speaker 2: entertaining calling up their top prospect, regardless of his one
- 13:58Speaker 2: point zho to five ops and his over three hundred
- 14:01Speaker 2: batting average. Again, this comes down to forty man roster construction,
- 14:06Speaker 2: less do the service time, more that he doesn't need
- 14:08Speaker 2: to be protected, and the person in charge of activating
- 14:11Speaker 2: the forty man roster right now, John Azaylock, is not
- 14:14Speaker 2: going to be the person in charge of managing JJ
- 14:17Speaker 2: Weatherhold's career.
- 14:17Speaker 1: That's time bloom.
- 14:18Speaker 2: So we can, unfortunately hit the pause button on seeing
- 14:21Speaker 2: JJ Weatherhold at some point this year, unless again, something
- 14:24Speaker 2: completely crazy out of left field happens. For right now,
- 14:28Speaker 2: you'll continue to see Mason win, hopefully avoid the injured list,
- 14:31Speaker 2: play through this pain, undergo a scope surgery probably in October,
- 14:37Speaker 2: and be good to go. For a quote, very normal
- 14:39Speaker 2: for the Cardinals medical team offseason and hopefully a twenty
- 14:42Speaker 2: twenty six season as well.
- 14:44Speaker 1: It's worth noting that right.
- 14:46Speaker 2: Now Mason Win stands as a lead candidate for the
- 14:49Speaker 2: nationally Gold Glove at shortstop. He is having one of
- 14:52Speaker 2: the best defensive seasons by a Cardinal shortstop in franchise history.
- 14:55Speaker 2: I'll read you guys some stats. He leads MLB and
- 14:58Speaker 2: out of a average at twenty two, and he leads
- 15:00Speaker 2: all MLB shortstops with a nine to nine to four
- 15:02Speaker 2: fielding percentage. He's made just three errors all season. He's
- 15:05Speaker 2: also on pace to post the full or the highest
- 15:08Speaker 2: full season fielding percentage by a Cardinal shortstop in club history.
- 15:12Speaker 2: So lots to play for if you're Mason Win again,
- 15:15Speaker 2: if he doesn't feel like he's hurting himself or putting
- 15:17Speaker 2: his future at risk, then you manage it and play
- 15:20Speaker 2: day by day and hope that the surgery goes in
- 15:21Speaker 2: there and clean some things up so he's not in
- 15:23Speaker 2: pain come twenty twenty six. So I hear your skepticism again.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Anytime I think that you hear surgery or tear, you
- 15:32Speaker 1: fear the worst.
- 15:33Speaker 2: But this is a situation the Cardinals feel like and
- 15:35Speaker 2: Mason feels like they have a hold on so they
- 15:37Speaker 2: will continue doing that. More injury updates await for you all.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Brendan Donovan, Nolan Arnado started rehab assignments. We'll break those
- 15:46Speaker 2: down and when those two players could be back. After

- 16:49Speaker 1: Dig in.
- 16:51Speaker 2: As I'm looking through my scorebook again that I'm so
- 16:53Speaker 2: proud of, shout out Bob Carpenter in his final season
- 16:56Speaker 2: as the broadcaster for the Washington Nationals.
- 16:58Speaker 1: He also.
- 17:01Speaker 2: There's a baseball scorebook and I use it every year.
- 17:04Speaker 2: That was a three hour and forty four minute baseball game,
- 17:07Speaker 2: and I.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Can't believe that used to be the normal.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Like before the pitch clock, you got a three thirty
- 17:13Speaker 2: baseball game and you're like, yeah, that standard. This baseball
- 17:16Speaker 2: game was exhausting. I cannot believe we used to do
- 17:18Speaker 2: that every day. Anyway, Let's talk about some of your
- 17:21Speaker 2: favorite players returning to the Cardinals line at. Brendan Donovan
- 17:24Speaker 2: Nolan Arnado began rehab assignments with Double A Springfield this week.
- 17:28Speaker 2: John King did as well. Brendan Donovan played I think
- 17:31Speaker 2: He had three at bats today for.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Springfield the Springfield Cardinals.
- 17:36Speaker 2: He will be activated Friday before the three game series
- 17:40Speaker 2: against the Brewers. Nolan Arnatto had his first game of
- 17:42Speaker 2: his rehab assignment as the DH for Springfield on Wednesday.
- 17:46Speaker 1: He'll play in a couple more. He's targeting a Monday activation.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Before the Cardinals three game series started the home stand
- 17:52Speaker 2: against the Reds.
- 17:53Speaker 1: So rotation reinforcements are on the way.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Wilson Contraras after served his four game suspension and returned
- 17:59Speaker 2: to the Alec Burlson is back, so we're starting to
- 18:02Speaker 2: see more of the regulars come in, which means I believe,
- 18:05Speaker 2: I firmly believe the team's strikeout rate will go down.
- 18:08Speaker 1: The Cardinals had let me count.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Them, fourteen strikeouts on Wednesday, and a lot of that
- 18:17Speaker 2: just when you look at the players in the bottom
- 18:19Speaker 2: of the lineup, they're guys that are very new or
- 18:22Speaker 2: raw to this league. And you know, Brendan Donovan doesn't
- 18:26Speaker 2: strike out a lot, Alec Burlson doesn't strike out a lot.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Nolan Arnando doesn't strike out a lot.
- 18:30Speaker 2: So you're seeing a lot of these inflated numbers because
- 18:32Speaker 2: they had been replaced with players who do strike out
- 18:34Speaker 2: a lot.
- 18:35Speaker 1: So this should help.
- 18:36Speaker 2: The offense desperately because they need it, and it will
- 18:40Speaker 2: again complicated playing time over the final two weeks of
- 18:43Speaker 2: the season. But I think we've seen enough out of
- 18:45Speaker 2: each player at this point to kind of judge their seasons.
- 18:48Speaker 2: Of course, you want guys like Jordan Walker to finish strong,
- 18:51Speaker 2: Nolan Gorman to finish strong, Lars new Bar, et cetera.
- 18:53Speaker 2: But every single player I think has had a substantial
- 18:56Speaker 2: enough runway playing time, whatever overused term you want to
- 18:59Speaker 2: call it for us to make decisions about whether or
- 19:01Speaker 2: not their seasons were successful, what they can build upon,
- 19:05Speaker 2: what they did well, what they didn't. So Brendan Donovan
- 19:09Speaker 2: should be back Friday, Nolan Arnado should be back Monday.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Whether or not these two are Cardinals come open or
- 19:15Speaker 2: comes spring training next year, Excuse me, that's a conversation
- 19:18Speaker 2: for what will be a very busy offseason for us
- 19:21Speaker 2: all But right now, some roster reinforcements are coming back.
- 19:24Speaker 1: No word on the corresponding moves yet.
- 19:27Speaker 2: The players most likely to see their playe time cut
- 19:29Speaker 2: a little bit, I would say Thomas A. Jac He
- 19:31Speaker 2: had a four hit night tonight, that was exciting jose Ferman,
- 19:35Speaker 2: and we'll see what this means for Nolan Gorman and
- 19:38Speaker 2: Jordan Walker. Walker did not get the start on Tuesday
- 19:41Speaker 2: or Wednesday's game. Lars Newbar has gotten the bulk of
- 19:43Speaker 2: the starts. Alec Wilson is going to continue being a
- 19:46Speaker 2: starter and that lineup. He's deserved it. So we'll see
- 19:48Speaker 2: how the planetime shakes out. The Cardinals take on the Brewers.
- 19:53Speaker 2: They are headed. They're probably on a flight now to
- 19:55Speaker 2: Milwaukee again, thank goodness, it's an off day.
- 19:58Speaker 1: The team charter is scheduled to land.
- 19:59Speaker 2: It's am Central times, so they will most likely sleep
- 20:04Speaker 2: most of the day enjoy the night off in Milwaukee
- 20:06Speaker 2: before three game set.
- 20:08Speaker 1: The Cardinals have one five series left in the season.
- 20:14Speaker 1: That's insane.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Four of those five series are against NL Central opponents.
- 20:20Speaker 2: They will go three against the Brewers at American Family Field,
- 20:23Speaker 2: three against the Reds at Bush Jadum, three against the
- 20:25Speaker 2: Brewers again at bus Jadium, and they'll finish the season
- 20:27Speaker 2: on the road six games, three in San Francisco, three
- 20:30Speaker 2: at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cups. So Division action
- 20:34Speaker 2: picking up that National League Wild card is all over
- 20:36Speaker 2: the place. The Brewers are apparently the best team in baseball.
- 20:40Speaker 1: Again. I do not know how they keep getting away
- 20:42Speaker 1: with this, but they do.
- 20:43Speaker 2: They are again, a very athletic, very talented, very exciting
- 20:48Speaker 2: team to watch. So I actually think, and you'll hear
- 20:51Speaker 2: this around the league, the Cardinals could learn a lot
- 20:53Speaker 2: from the Brewers model for how they evaluate players, how
- 20:57Speaker 2: resourceful they are.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Based on how limited spending that they do.
- 21:00Speaker 2: So it's very impressive what the Milwaukee Brewers have been
- 21:03Speaker 2: able to do again, and one of these days I'm
- 21:05Speaker 2: going to start the season believing in them, because every
- 21:07Speaker 2: year I'm like, no, they can't keep doing this, and
- 21:09Speaker 2: then every year they keep doing it.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Nothing.
- 21:12Speaker 2: The Cardinals will like to do more than place spoiler
- 21:14Speaker 2: for a lot of these teams, especially in the Division.
- 21:16Speaker 2: The Reds are very much in the postseason hunt, so
- 21:18Speaker 2: are the Cubs and the Giants, so plenty of time
- 21:21Speaker 2: to wreak chaos and.
- 21:24Speaker 1: That's what we like to do.
- 21:26Speaker 2: So thanks is always for watching Cardinal Territory. I'm going
- 21:29Speaker 2: to get some sleep because I obviously need it. We'll
- 21:31Speaker 2: be back over the weekend with some Cardinals Brewers breakdowns
- 21:35Speaker 2: and hopefully a better outcome at American Family Field than
- 21:39Speaker 2: T Mobile Park again. I'm your host, Katie Wu. Thanks
- 21:41Speaker 2: for watching Cardinal Territory. We'll be back very soon.
