- 0:00And my first just what's it what's it
- 0:02been like to to make this move to Auburn
- 0:05and kind of how's it been so far?
- 0:06>> It's been awesome. You know, it's a lot
- 0:08of um really good people here. You know,
- 0:10I heard a lot of you know, a lot of
- 0:11people have worked here. You know, spoke
- 0:12real highly about the the area,
- 0:14obviously the university, and it hasn't
- 0:16been disappointing at all. You know, my
- 0:18wife's enjoying it. So, uh it's been
- 0:20great
- 0:21>> for you. Just goish that connection.
- 0:25>> What was it about him and this staff
- 0:26that made this the right fit, right?
- 0:28>> Yeah. I've known Al for a long time, you
- 0:30know, and he's always been, you know,
- 0:32very u good at what he does, you know,
- 0:34building relationships. Uh he's family
- 0:37oriented, you know, and obviously he's a
- 0:38really good football coach. So, you
- 0:40know, those are things that I gravitate
- 0:41to. You know, you want to be around good
- 0:43people and um you know, having a chance
- 0:45to win and win at a highest level, you
- 0:47know, to me it was a no-brainer.
- 0:48>> For you, um how beneficial is it that
- 0:51you've been in the league? So, a lot of
- 0:53these guys that are on this roster,
- 0:56you've recruited, you you've watched
- 0:57kind of develop. Do you think that's an
- 0:59advantage coming in in year one for you?
- 1:01>> I I think so. You know, I know this
- 1:03league, you know, I've been in it for,
- 1:04you know, it's be my sixth year in the
- 1:05league and um you know, I I would tell
- 1:07you there's there's not a better league
- 1:09in the country, you know. So, um just
- 1:11understanding what the rivalries are
- 1:13like, you know, um the different arenas
- 1:14and different places. Um, and
- 1:16definitely, you know, some of the guys I
- 1:17recruited, you know, we wanted them at
- 1:18the other place and didn't get them and
- 1:20having a chance to work with them now is
- 1:22going to be great.
- 1:23>> Yeah. Talk about some of those guys. You
- 1:25come in, you got a couple older guys
- 1:26that have played a lot of football and
- 1:27Caitlin and Sylvester. That's two guys
- 1:29you known. So, Yep.
- 1:30>> What's your thoughts on them? And I
- 1:32guess as you heading into the spring,
- 1:34maybe expectations for guys like that.
- 1:35>> Yeah, I mean, super excited, you know,
- 1:37uh, obviously you mentioned, you know, I
- 1:38knew those guys from the recruiting
- 1:40process and, you know, I've kind of
- 1:41watched them from afar. So, you know,
- 1:43I'm super excited to be able to have a
- 1:44chance to work with them finally. Um,
- 1:46but they're smart, they're relentless.
- 1:47You know, football is extremely
- 1:49important to them. Um, you know, we're
- 1:51definitely looking to build off, you
- 1:52know, what these guys have done in the
- 1:53past and, you know, hopefully take them
- 1:54even another step.
- 1:55>> How about that that young guys that got
- 1:57some experience last year, you know, New
- 1:59Boy and then Eric are two guys that are
- 2:01extremely talented, were highly highly
- 2:03recruited guys.
- 2:04>> Yeah.
- 2:04>> For those guys heading into year two,
- 2:06what's what's the thought process for
- 2:08guys that have to get experience in year
- 2:10one? Yeah, I I think, you know, from
- 2:11year one to two is usually where you
- 2:13take your biggest jump, you know, and
- 2:14those guys played a little ball last
- 2:15year and um obviously had some success
- 2:18and, you know, we're going to build off
- 2:19that, you know, build off that
- 2:20foundation. So, you know, really we
- 2:23really just getting started, you know,
- 2:24in a lot of aspects, but um but they're
- 2:26smart. You know, they they want to work.
- 2:28You know, it's important to them. You
- 2:30know, they've done a really good job
- 2:31building that room and like I said, I
- 2:32can't wait to get a chance to work with
- 2:33them.
- 2:34>> Yeah. for you just when you look at a at
- 2:36a player, what what's the thing you look
- 2:38for it from a recruiting standpoint?
- 2:40What do you what do you zone in on?
- 2:42What's important to you when you start
- 2:43recruiting a player?
- 2:44>> Yeah, I mean it's a lot of things, but I
- 2:46think the number one, do they love
- 2:47football? You know, and these guys are
- 2:48football guys, you know, football is
- 2:50extremely important to them, you know,
- 2:52it's hard, you know, to play at this
- 2:53level, you know, and if you don't love
- 2:54it, you know, it could be extremely
- 2:55challenging, you know, to develop. So,
- 2:58um, do they love football? And then
- 2:59obviously the measurements, can they
- 3:00run, jump, you know, all those good
- 3:01things. But I think the the true secret
- 3:03sauce is do they love football? Do they
- 3:05want to compete? You know, do they love
- 3:06Auburn? You know, and obviously those
- 3:08guys do.
- 3:10>> Got a guy like Fred Cast, you know,
- 3:13coming from South Florida where he was
- 3:14the emotional leader for that defense.
- 3:16How can you translate that leadership
- 3:17here at
- 3:18>> Well, I think leadership travels. Like I
- 3:20really do, you know, and I've known Fred
- 3:22through the recruiting process as well,
- 3:24you know, great home, great kid, ultra
- 3:26competitor. Um, you know, we're excited
- 3:28to have him here. You know, he's going
- 3:29into a room that, you know, has a lot of
- 3:31talent returning. Um, but I think he'll
- 3:33fit in nicely. You know, it's going to
- 3:34be extremely competitive. You know, and
- 3:36that's what you want. You know,
- 3:37everybody here wants to win and to me,
- 3:39the more good players you have, the
- 3:40better it is. Clearly.
- 3:42>> What about this this Durkin system kind
- 3:44of you guys had such a wild couple of
- 3:48months and now you start to actually do
- 3:49some football. How fun is it to be able
- 3:52to start doing some of those things as
- 3:53you get ready for spring?
- 3:54>> Yeah, it's always fun to get the ball.
- 3:55You're right. That's what we love to do.
- 3:57Um, it's a great system. You know, it's,
- 3:59you know, a lot of similarities to what
- 4:00I'm used to. You know, violence, right?
- 4:03You know, guys running hit, putting guys
- 4:04in the best situations to be successful.
- 4:07Uh, no, it's been great. You know,
- 4:08learning the terminology, obviously, you
- 4:10know, different language in a lot of
- 4:12aspects, but, you know, ultimately it's
- 4:14going to get a guys the best
- 4:14opportunities to be successful. And, you
- 4:16know, what coach wouldn't love that?
- 4:18How how big is it to to already have a
- 4:20system in place and some guys that have
- 4:22played in it even though some coaches
- 4:24are having to figure it out and
- 4:25newcomers too, but to have a a base to
- 4:28start with heading into this?
- 4:29>> Yeah, anytime you have a foundation, you
- 4:30know, I think that's key. You know,
- 4:32obviously you want to grow and every
- 4:34year is a different year, but you know,
- 4:35having a foundation, these kids
- 4:37understand it, you know, right now it's
- 4:38at the point, you know, where can we
- 4:39continue to grow, you know, and and take
- 4:41some make some strides and those kids
- 4:43are hungry for that, you know, so for me
- 4:45that's always exciting. What is it? I
- 4:47know you you'll know more what you've
- 4:49out on the field practicing with them,
- 4:50but in the month or six weeks or
- 4:52whatever that you've been around these
- 4:53guys. What first impression of your
- 4:55guys?
- 4:55>> Smart, you know, very smart, you know,
- 4:58very detail oriented. Um, like I said,
- 5:00these guys love ball, you know, and
- 5:02that's what we're looking for. You know,
- 5:03guys that crave it, you know, you know,
- 5:05first one in, last one out mentality,
- 5:07you know, those guys are are um, you
- 5:09know, they're used to that and that's
- 5:10what I want. So, so having that
- 5:12foundation has been refreshing.
- 5:16Sorry if you've been asked about it, but
- 5:17I wanted to ask you a twoparter on on
- 5:19recruiting just in in the first place
- 5:22just like what your biggest priorities
- 5:23are when you're looking at kids and
- 5:25looking at a recruit and then also
- 5:26yourself as a reporter and just kind of
- 5:29how you describe yourself.
- 5:31>> Um I I think the very first one is, you
- 5:33know, we did talk about a little bit is
- 5:34do they love football, right? You know,
- 5:36in this day and age, a lot of
- 5:37distractions and sometimes kids don't
- 5:39keep the main thing the main thing, but
- 5:41you know, do they love ball? I think
- 5:42that's the number one thing that you're
- 5:43looking for. is kind of one of those
- 5:44missing ingredients that I think
- 5:46somebody some guys miss. Obviously, you
- 5:48want size, you know, guys that can run,
- 5:50you know, strike, you know, can they
- 5:51play the football, you know, in this
- 5:53modern day of football, you know, yes,
- 5:55you still have to be able to tackle, but
- 5:56you got to be able to cover in space,
- 5:57you know, and make plays that way. So,
- 5:59um that's extremely that's extremely
- 6:01important to us with a versatility um
- 6:03element, you know, combined with that.
- 6:05You know, who am I as a recruiter? You
- 6:07know, I think I'm genuine, you know. I
- 6:08think um you know, what you see is what
- 6:10you get, you know, and I and I love
- 6:12kids. I love developing. You know, if I
- 6:13wasn't coaching, I'd be a teacher
- 6:15somewhere. My mom was an educator. So,
- 6:17um I mean, that's who I am. You know, I
- 6:19think I'm authentic. You know, I'm very
- 6:21comfortable in my own skin. Um but I'm
- 6:24excited. Like I said, you know, we have
- 6:26a great product to offer here, a great
- 6:28family atmosphere, uh great tradition,
- 6:30you know, so there's a lot of things to
- 6:32be able to sell, you know, when it comes
- 6:33to all
