- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, Maggie, I've given this a lot of fighter. I'm
- 0:03Speaker 1: sure we can come to some sort of agreement. George
- 0:13Speaker 1: beaten by an infant. What could be more humiliating? Hi,
- 0:17Speaker 1: Scoop four Finger Discounted.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Hey, everybody, welcome to four Finger discount where today we
- 0:38Speaker 2: are joined by the most local of all comedians here
- 0:40Speaker 2: in geelongas Day Thornton. How are you doing, sir?
- 0:42Speaker 3: You guys, I can't believe so all three of us
- 0:44Speaker 3: are from Geelong? Is that right? Is this the Simpsons effect?
- 0:47Speaker 3: That the entire city is enamored with the Simpsons?
- 0:50Speaker 4: Pretty much the case. We are the Springfield of Australia.
- 0:52Speaker 4: So yeah, listeners of this particular episode should brace themselves
- 0:56Speaker 4: for a whole bunch of local references. Going to be
- 0:58Speaker 4: talking about Paco to be uh, gonna be name dropping
- 1:02Speaker 4: the lyric and the Eureka and bemoaning the loss of
- 1:05Speaker 4: Texas Burgers and Speaky Serf Shop.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Yeah, and I'm so sorry Balert you just found out
- 1:10Speaker 3: your Shelby Bill. I am so sorry.
- 1:12Speaker 2: By the way, fun Fat, you're a Geelong Cats fan, right?
- 1:14Speaker 3: This is true as well?
- 1:15Speaker 2: Yes, his dad is the Bobby Davis.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Embarrassing not embarrassing fact because it's good.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Yeah, how cool is that? It's not bad?
- 1:29Speaker 4: Unfortunately I'm not wearing my Bobby's son T shirt today. Yeah,
- 1:31Speaker 4: it's in the wash. Well, all three of them are
- 1:34Speaker 4: in the wash. Bob Davis, Yes, was indeed my father.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Oh I had good that mate. You wouldn't have had
- 1:40Speaker 3: to pay for a meal at Smorgy's. That he's really impressive.
- 1:44Speaker 4: Well I didn't because I was dined and dashed.
- 1:47Speaker 2: But trying to explain the idea of Smorgy's to anyone
- 1:50Speaker 2: who didn't live in Gelon, I think they happened in
- 1:52Speaker 2: Melbourne maybe, but I don't think they had the Seal.
- 1:54Speaker 2: We had Salted the Seal and King Neptune, these animatronic
- 1:57Speaker 2: things that would sing songs every half an hour. They
- 1:59Speaker 2: had a video package of ariblet scene You're playing football.
- 2:02Speaker 2: It's madness.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Yeah for anyone listening. And I know that your podcast
- 2:05Speaker 3: goes international. Small geese isn't all you can eat, but
- 2:09Speaker 3: kind of like a sizzler. But it was at the
- 2:11Speaker 3: end of a peer because Geelong's on a bay, so
- 2:13Speaker 3: it had this unbelievable view just with Bay Marese full
- 2:18Speaker 3: of fried food and shit. Food combined with, as you said,
- 2:22Speaker 3: an animatronic seal that would do songs about our Australian
- 2:27Speaker 3: rules footballer favorite player in Geelong, Gary Ablett. So it
- 2:31Speaker 3: was really a melting pot of regrettable decisions.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Really, my sister works at this place because her place
- 2:38Speaker 2: of business her business. But the guy that owned it,
- 2:40Speaker 2: he found the actual salt of the seal. They found
- 2:43Speaker 2: it in this shed and he had it in like
- 2:46Speaker 2: in the office as a display and people were coming
- 2:48Speaker 2: from all over Geelan to get a photo of the
- 2:50Speaker 2: salted the seal. Its hilarious.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Is he still got it?
- 2:54Speaker 2: No? So the guy that owned it, this guy found
- 2:56Speaker 2: it in a shed at like there used to be
- 2:58Speaker 2: the zoo and bow and heads here and again local
- 3:00Speaker 2: reference and they were like holding it hostage in the shed.
- 3:02Speaker 2: He bought it off them. So now he owned salted
- 3:04Speaker 2: the seal and he rents it out to businesses. So
- 3:06Speaker 2: my sisters when my sister works, doesn't have it anymore.
- 3:08Speaker 2: But you can actually rent assaulting. Now rent salty the seal.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Haven't met your work party.
- 3:12Speaker 3: That's the gift that keeps on giving. That is incredible.
- 3:15Speaker 3: I now know what's going to happen in my next birthday.
- 3:17Speaker 4: I just love that Discovery sounds like Bobo.
- 3:21Speaker 2: You mentioned things that keep on giving this episode Rose Bud.
- 3:23Speaker 2: I revisited again last night for this review. Holy shit,
- 3:27Speaker 2: I forgot how many pivotal moments, like classic moments from
- 3:30Speaker 2: The Simpsons were in this one. You've got happy birthday,
- 3:33Speaker 2: mister Smithers. You've got the ramones, You've got sixty four
- 3:36Speaker 2: slices of American cheese, You've got two plus twos four,
- 3:39Speaker 2: You've got that Yes sitcom. So many moments in one episode.
- 3:43Speaker 2: It's incredible. People always call this one arguably the greatest
- 3:46Speaker 2: of all time, and it's hard to argue that it's
- 3:48Speaker 2: got to be at least top three.
- 3:50Speaker 3: It's also funny that it was only when I got
- 3:51Speaker 3: older but I realized it was a Citizen Kane rip
- 3:54Speaker 3: off that was the parody, and I'm yet to see
- 3:57Speaker 3: Citizen Kine. I was like, Oh, you're right, and then like, oh,
- 4:00Speaker 3: I kind of got the gist of it.
- 4:01Speaker 2: I get it how many of us growing up watching
- 4:05Speaker 2: The Simpsons and know no parenting Things like the shitting
- 4:07Speaker 2: is one I always fall back on. You feel like
- 4:09Speaker 2: I don't need to see the real thing I've seen
- 4:11Speaker 2: the Simpsons version. I get the gist, as you said, absolutely.
- 4:13Speaker 3: I mean I was bred on Warner Brothers cartoons and
- 4:16Speaker 3: they would have references from the thirties and forties, and
- 4:18Speaker 3: I never went, ah, like I kind of then made
- 4:21Speaker 3: the connection. But it's not like I went back and thought,
- 4:23Speaker 3: all right, they've mentioned Hitler, I might as well just
- 4:25Speaker 3: see what.
- 4:25Speaker 2: All the World War.
- 4:27Speaker 3: I was, Yeah, it's fine, and I love that about
- 4:31Speaker 3: the Simpsons. There were so many references I didn't quite
- 4:33Speaker 3: understand when I was young, but it's still funny.
- 4:35Speaker 4: Those A lot of the people are going to watch
- 4:36Speaker 4: Citizen Kaanes sort of widely regarded as you know, the
- 4:38Speaker 4: apex of cinematic achievement, and there's go eh, Rosebud was better.
- 4:44Speaker 4: The Simpsons actually nailed at piss off Auson Wells.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Because so the thing is, because guy is the movie
- 4:50Speaker 2: buff here, he knows all about movies, and he'll explain
- 4:52Speaker 2: to us how it's a parody. But in the film
- 4:53Speaker 2: he was just explained to me before we hit record
- 4:55Speaker 2: that in Citizen Kane, it's not a bad bobo, it's
- 4:58Speaker 2: a sled. Correct. It is na named Rosebud, which is
- 5:01Speaker 2: did you ever know that much, Dave.
- 5:03Speaker 3: I did know it was the sled in a very
- 5:06Speaker 3: I'm not gen z, but this feels like a very
- 5:08Speaker 3: gen Z thing to say, which is, I saw a
- 5:10Speaker 3: YouTube group about Citizen Kane, so it's about the ten
- 5:13Speaker 3: minute synopsis of the movie, and I'm like that old
- 5:15Speaker 3: though you.
- 5:16Speaker 4: Got the spark notes. It's funny. I'll put my nerd
- 5:22Speaker 4: hat on for a second though, because I mean I
- 5:24Speaker 4: rewatches and came not long ago, and you think, oh god,
- 5:26Speaker 4: it's going to be fucking dusty homework from the thirties
- 5:29Speaker 4: or whenever, and you look it's like this is like
- 5:32Speaker 4: avant garde or something. Yeah, it's really entertaining. It's really
- 5:35Speaker 4: sort of it feels very very modern, you know, when
- 5:39Speaker 4: it's something like you know, all these prestigious sort of
- 5:42Speaker 4: film buffs and film publications say, oh my goodness, absolute
- 5:46Speaker 4: to you know, a cinematic pinnacle or something like that.
- 5:49Speaker 4: Oh god, this is going to be some three hour
- 5:51Speaker 4: Vietnamese tone poem you see at the Melbourne Film Festival
- 5:55Speaker 4: and you want to like, oh shit, there's really funny,
- 5:58Speaker 4: and you know this is really innovative in this Okay,
- 6:00Speaker 4: that's nerd hat removed.
- 6:03Speaker 3: That's good to know, guy, But I do want to
- 6:04Speaker 3: know was there a George Burns reference throughout? It was
- 6:09Speaker 3: Bunny Chance was an inn some short shorts at about
- 6:12Speaker 3: eight years old. I get the feeling.
- 6:13Speaker 4: Even in nineteen ninety three though, was sort of pushing it.
- 6:16Speaker 4: You know, I don't know if the target when is
- 6:18Speaker 4: actually going to get this all the match gave himselves
- 6:20Speaker 4: a little bit of an escape patch when they was saying,
- 6:22Speaker 4: don't worry, this is going to be hilarious when I'm
- 6:23Speaker 4: an old man.
- 6:24Speaker 2: But I don't think the rid of his episode John
- 6:26Speaker 2: swartzwe one of his best episodes. I don't think he
- 6:28Speaker 2: cared either if you got it or not, and sometimes
- 6:30Speaker 2: he just put gags in that made him laugh.
- 6:32Speaker 3: Yeah, Luke, I mean, I do love that it's Monty
- 6:35Speaker 3: Burns's younger brother, like at the time and older brother.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Do you remember watching Rosebud for the first time and
- 6:47Speaker 2: seeing things like the George Burns and having absolutely no
- 6:50Speaker 2: fucking idea what was going on, and you just you
- 6:53Speaker 2: just sort of went with it, didn't you. It was like, oh, well,
- 6:54Speaker 2: it's just a bit that I understand. I'm sure I'll
- 6:56Speaker 2: get it one day.
- 6:57Speaker 3: I did get George Burns, I mean, I was. My
- 7:00Speaker 3: upbringing in Geelong was very much he just watched TV
- 7:04Speaker 3: on a weekend. My parents went off and just got
- 7:07Speaker 3: drunk with their friends, I think, and so I back
- 7:09Speaker 3: then in Australia in the nineties on a weekend you
- 7:12Speaker 3: would get a lot of old films. I mean, now
- 7:14Speaker 3: it's probably been demoted to those off Broadway channels, you know,
- 7:17Speaker 3: the Channel Go and seven Flicks and all these other
- 7:20Speaker 3: nine gem Yeah, exactly, but back in the day you
- 7:23Speaker 3: would routinely get I mean Abbot and Castallo films. You
- 7:27Speaker 3: would get films from the fifties, and so George Burns
- 7:29Speaker 3: was kind of around. I kind of understood that I
- 7:31Speaker 3: don't understand the share of Lobo reference, and I still
- 7:35Speaker 3: don't in my mid forties, but I'm happy to go
- 7:37Speaker 3: with it.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Do you want to explain to what it is?
- 7:39Speaker 4: Yeah, Sheriff Lobo was a pivotal supporting character on the
- 7:42Speaker 4: Dukes of Hazard, so beloved in fact that he did
- 7:44Speaker 4: get his own spin off.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Ah.
- 7:47Speaker 4: I think last approximately three episodes. We like Lobo and
- 7:51Speaker 4: small doses. We don't win a half hour bites.
- 7:54Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like Stair of Lobo.
- 7:57Speaker 2: I had no.
- 7:57Speaker 3: I mean, I did watch the Dukes of Hazzard, but
- 7:59Speaker 3: that was jezus, what is that early eighties? It would
- 8:01Speaker 3: be seventies, I.
- 8:02Speaker 4: Reckon late seventies, early eighties.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:04Speaker 3: Yeah, it was a better time.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Day.
- 8:06Speaker 4: You could drive around with the Union Confederate flag on
- 8:09Speaker 4: the I'm on the top of your car and not
- 8:11Speaker 4: get canceled.
- 8:13Speaker 3: Man. You could leave the windows open and just slide
- 8:14Speaker 3: in and out without opening the doors.
- 8:16Speaker 2: That was the great booling.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Never got stolen despite the fact the windows were opened
- 8:20Speaker 3: the whole time.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Did you have to even wear seat belts in those days? Please?
- 8:24Speaker 3: What are you talking about?
- 8:26Speaker 4: Luke Duke and Bo Duke did not.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Yeah, that was a sign of weakness. You'd rather go
- 8:29Speaker 3: through the front wind chill with those namby panby seatbelts.
- 8:34Speaker 2: It's like that trou McClue video Alice through the Windshiel.
- 8:39Speaker 2: But we're here. Let's plug your your coming to us. So,
- 8:42Speaker 2: Dave Thoughton, localmedian, you've got your to a more or
- 8:44Speaker 2: less let's talk about it. I think it starts early March,
- 8:46Speaker 2: correct in Adelaide.
- 8:47Speaker 3: That is right, guys, I'm just about to recording of this. Yes,
- 8:51Speaker 3: in a couple of weeks. I'll be starting in Adelaide
- 8:53Speaker 3: and then going to all the major cities. We've got
- 8:55Speaker 3: Melbourne here for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, I got Sydney, Brisbane,
- 8:59Speaker 3: per I'm also a Newcastle and Gold Coast so yeah,
- 9:03Speaker 3: the tour all kicks off and brand new show so
- 9:07Speaker 3: if people want to come down, that'd be great. And
- 9:09Speaker 3: the last show that I did, actually it's on YouTube
- 9:12Speaker 3: right now. I did film it. It kind of ties
- 9:14Speaker 3: into what we're talking about because the last show was
- 9:17Speaker 3: called Nothing's Unpossible, which is an end of the cat
- 9:20Speaker 3: to Ralph Wigham when he gets caught up on stage
- 9:22Speaker 3: by Principal Skinner. He said his faith and he goes,
- 9:25Speaker 3: me fail English, that's unpassable. So that's how much the
- 9:29Speaker 3: Simpsons are Imbauedy in my life.
- 9:30Speaker 4: And we keep referring to Dave as a local commedian
- 9:32Speaker 4: because you know, we're very proud of you know, Geelong.
- 9:35Speaker 2: If anyone makes it from Geelong, you're proud of it.
- 9:37Speaker 4: Oh yeah, stuck with it. But David is a national
- 9:40Speaker 4: and international game.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, oh thanks.
- 9:44Speaker 4: The stage is all over the world, yes too.
- 9:47Speaker 3: I mean not as much now, my little handbroke children
- 9:50Speaker 3: for they said to stop the international touring, but now
- 9:53Speaker 3: touring all throughout Australia. And well, I actually live in
- 9:56Speaker 3: Melbourne now, I live up a bit, but I still
- 9:58Speaker 3: head down at too long all the time. And as
- 10:00Speaker 3: we said, go for the cats.
- 10:01Speaker 2: So you named your special unpossible. Does the Simpsons still
- 10:04Speaker 2: have an impact on the comedy scene now on comedians
- 10:07Speaker 2: of today?
- 10:08Speaker 3: I think it's really an age thing. I mean I
- 10:11Speaker 3: still use the odd Simpsons reference. I mean I did
- 10:15Speaker 3: it to my kids on me recently. Actually, this is
- 10:17Speaker 3: why I love that we're doing this podcast, because I
- 10:19Speaker 3: strangely about October last year, started playing Simpsons reruns to
- 10:25Speaker 3: my kids, just because I think I said to one
- 10:27Speaker 3: of them, look, I was born a snake handler. I'm
- 10:31Speaker 3: going to die a snake handler. And my kids went
- 10:33Speaker 3: story what and that's my cis lack And they're like,
- 10:39Speaker 3: I don't know what you're talking about. And then we
- 10:41Speaker 3: started watching the Simpsons. So it's really strange that now
- 10:44Speaker 3: a couple of months later, when I haven't really been
- 10:46Speaker 3: watching the Simpsons for years, I got really back into
- 10:49Speaker 3: it and I got the eery feeling with Simpsons references
- 10:52Speaker 3: to answer your question, Dano, I probably people of my age.
- 10:56Speaker 3: You know, you can be in a green room and
- 10:58Speaker 3: stand up and drop a reference like evidence coming up Millbouse,
- 11:01Speaker 3: and then watch a couple of guys lighting up. But
- 11:05Speaker 3: anyone for I'm trying to think maybe under thirty, it's
- 11:09Speaker 3: kind of lost, like family guy in South Park got them, but.
- 11:12Speaker 2: You're making me feel old under thirty.
- 11:15Speaker 4: But it really is that kind of secret handshake though.
- 11:17Speaker 4: I mean, if you are dropping certain lines, I mean
- 11:19Speaker 4: not even for comic effect, but it just becomes part
- 11:21Speaker 4: of your everyday vocab. I mean, I don't know how
- 11:24Speaker 4: many times we've talked about how, yeah you've got yours.
- 11:28Speaker 2: I've got mine.
- 11:28Speaker 4: I mean, I'll go to the supermarket or whatever, and
- 11:30Speaker 4: you check if you're actually in the right parking spot. Yeah,
- 11:33Speaker 4: you look at I'm in the lines. You don't like it,
- 11:35Speaker 4: go tell your mama.
- 11:36Speaker 2: You know, or you see a variant of a thing limited, No, exactly.
- 11:42Speaker 3: It's even these obscure references. Like we've got a lot
- 11:45Speaker 3: of people in stand up and I can understand it's
- 11:47Speaker 3: a broad church and we were just having this conversation
- 11:50Speaker 3: about like ADHD, which is a big thing now and
- 11:52Speaker 3: it's great that people are getting diagnosed, but of course, mates,
- 11:55Speaker 3: they have to take some times whatever medicine that they're on.
- 11:59Speaker 3: And a reference that thing from the episode where they
- 12:03Speaker 3: go into the well. The fortune Teller goes into the
- 12:05Speaker 3: future and tells a Lita what her first almost marriage
- 12:08Speaker 3: was like. And when she goes and visits the in
- 12:11Speaker 3: laws over in England, they've got that uncle in the
- 12:13Speaker 3: corner and he goes, get me brain medicine for the
- 12:15Speaker 3: National health.
- 12:20Speaker 2: You're going to go with, give her this, then this
- 12:23Speaker 2: and then these. I'm thanks doctor. Oh I'm not a doctor.
- 12:29Speaker 3: See this is all great.
- 12:30Speaker 4: Yeah, but it seems to me that, yeah, people our
- 12:35Speaker 4: of a certain generation, shall we say, because I mean
- 12:37Speaker 4: looking at Dave.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Here, I mean you look, he's younger than me. Yeah,
- 12:40Speaker 2: he's got the he's got the you.
- 12:41Speaker 4: Know, fresh faced looks of a thirty five year old,
- 12:43Speaker 4: even though he's sort of he's close to guy Davis age,
- 12:46Speaker 4: which makes him damn fossil. Watching the Symptons on the
- 12:50Speaker 4: regulars as a young person, I mean it kind of
- 12:55Speaker 4: forms your comic sensibility away, or at least teaches you
- 12:58Speaker 4: the fundamentals of comedy and certain in terms of in
- 13:00Speaker 4: terms of comic delivering, in terms of timing all that
- 13:02Speaker 4: kind of stuff. Am I at all correct in thinking
- 13:05Speaker 4: that no.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Guy spot on it's knowing that I was coming on
- 13:08Speaker 3: this podcast. This made me reflect upon the Simpsons in
- 13:11Speaker 3: my life, and I almost couldn't be more on the
- 13:13Speaker 3: crosshairs in that you guys would know better than me.
- 13:16Speaker 3: I think it aired in ninety one, is that's right
- 13:19Speaker 3: in Australia? And then yeah, yeah, and I was eleven
- 13:23Speaker 3: years old, and so it focused on Bart and then
- 13:27Speaker 3: that got me in. I remember those early seasons they're
- 13:30Speaker 3: selling merch and they're really angling it towards kids, and
- 13:33Speaker 3: you know, all those t shirts are Bart saying don't
- 13:35Speaker 3: have a cow man or whatever it was. And so
- 13:36Speaker 3: it got me in. But then it matured as I matured.
- 13:40Speaker 3: So by the time we're getting to season four, season five,
- 13:43Speaker 3: which is where Rosebud's on, I'm fifteen sixteen, and so
- 13:47Speaker 3: you just locked in as a young man, like it's
- 13:49Speaker 3: just you're watching it. I was that kidlucking at school
- 13:55Speaker 3: all week that's quoting it as the arts teachers, like
- 13:58Speaker 3: you just need to shut up right.
- 13:59Speaker 4: Now and you just need to take your brain medication.
- 14:03Speaker 4: Yeah ha hack.
- 14:05Speaker 3: She goes, No, that's that's enough. That is enough, and
- 14:09Speaker 3: so rewatching it now as an adult, especially after becoming
- 14:12Speaker 3: a comic, You're right that it is just riding one
- 14:17Speaker 3: oh one, Like it's so punchy, it comes out of
- 14:19Speaker 3: the gates punchy. There are times when they're constantly undercutting
- 14:23Speaker 3: a trope and making and just even the subtlety of
- 14:27Speaker 3: the jokes. I mean in this Rosebud, which happens to
- 14:31Speaker 3: a lot of episodes, that storyline of just Smithers being
- 14:35Speaker 3: smitten with Monty Burns. And when I was even in
- 14:39Speaker 3: my mid teens and it could maybe speak to my naivety,
- 14:42Speaker 3: I was like, oh, yeah, Smith's just really loves his boss.
- 14:44Speaker 3: And it's like when I'm now in my mid forties,
- 14:46Speaker 3: I'm like, oh, right, like.
- 14:48Speaker 2: This he loves his boss.
- 14:52Speaker 4: But they didn't.
- 14:52Speaker 2: But but most of the time they didn't do it
- 14:54Speaker 2: in a way that where he was a punchline. As
- 14:56Speaker 2: a result, it was just you know, you watch this
- 14:58Speaker 2: very easily double as a kid and go you just
- 15:01Speaker 2: like mister Burns a lot, Yeah, I.
- 15:02Speaker 3: Mean, and then it made me laugh in this episode
- 15:05Speaker 3: is you talked about sixty four slices of American cheese,
- 15:08Speaker 3: you know, when they first tried to get into the house. Yeah,
- 15:11Speaker 3: and they slide down the rope and meet in the
- 15:13Speaker 3: middle because there's just not it doesn't go downhill, so
- 15:16Speaker 3: they just hanging there when Burns hit Smither's here and
- 15:19Speaker 3: go oh, it's beautiful. Norms of a man who's like, oh, well,
- 15:27Speaker 3: he could work out the plan worked out.
- 15:30Speaker 2: It's always like Smither's planned it to happen this way.
- 15:32Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, Harry Shirts is having an affluent field day.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:36Speaker 4: Yeah, the line reads in this episode, by the way,
- 15:38Speaker 4: I mean just yeah. The spin he puts on some
- 15:41Speaker 4: of this stuff was like tug on my furrow, leave
- 15:45Speaker 4: the costume.
- 15:48Speaker 3: A little bit at the end, and leave the costume.
- 15:50Speaker 4: Oh maybe laugh.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Well, So, what are your earliest memories of The Simpsons.
- 15:54Speaker 2: You're saying you're eleven? Bar of Mania? Was it running
- 15:57Speaker 2: wild and show? It was huge in the States, But
- 15:59Speaker 2: I feel like by the time Australia got the Simpsons,
- 16:01Speaker 2: the whole barta Mania fat had kind of already died
- 16:03Speaker 2: down in the US.
- 16:05Speaker 3: It really did for well for when well, I was
- 16:08Speaker 3: growing up, like at the age that I was, all
- 16:11Speaker 3: the kids this is grade six, grade five, grade six
- 16:14Speaker 3: in primary school, and all the kids are obsessed with it.
- 16:17Speaker 3: I mean, if you think I spoke about Warner Brothers
- 16:20Speaker 3: cartoons earlier, that was the only adult ish cartoon I've
- 16:25Speaker 3: ever seen in my life. Like some of the jokes
- 16:27Speaker 3: were kind of skewed to adults, but that's it. Everything
- 16:30Speaker 3: else was children's cartoons. And my dad, I do remember
- 16:32Speaker 3: when I first watched The Simpsons was like, what's this.
- 16:35Speaker 3: It's badly drawn cartoons. It's shit. I don't want to
- 16:38Speaker 3: know about it. And then, I mean, my father was
- 16:41Speaker 3: also a kind of he was a bald, kind of
- 16:44Speaker 3: heavy set guy, and I think after all.
- 16:47Speaker 2: The strain in the eighties.
- 16:48Speaker 3: Yeah, and Homer Simpson sounds like an absolute legend he was,
- 16:55Speaker 3: and I guy, yeah, and so to no, I'm surprised
- 16:58Speaker 3: Homer Simpson and George Castanza came is the pinup for it,
- 17:04Speaker 3: And then yeah, it morphed into that. So I mean
- 17:06Speaker 3: it was pretty big, I think. And again, like when
- 17:09Speaker 3: it was early, it was targeted squarely at a kid
- 17:12Speaker 3: my age, and then it was fascinating to watch this
- 17:15Speaker 3: thing turn into adult entertainment.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Did you watch it once it went beyond being like
- 17:20Speaker 2: the show to watch for kids, because I remember I
- 17:23Speaker 2: was born in eighty eight, so I was about six
- 17:24Speaker 2: or seven when I was really at its peak. And
- 17:26Speaker 2: then sort of South Park came around, and that was
- 17:28Speaker 2: sort of the more risky comedy animator show, and my
- 17:31Speaker 2: friends sort of gravitated towards that and Family Guy, but
- 17:33Speaker 2: I still stuck with The Simpsons for the most part,
- 17:36Speaker 2: where I feel like I was sort of the only
- 17:37Speaker 2: one left of my friends watching the Simpsons. Did you
- 17:39Speaker 2: ever get to that point on did you jump ship
- 17:41Speaker 2: to south Park? And those likes as well?
- 17:44Speaker 3: South Park was great and it still is great. I
- 17:46Speaker 3: think south Park funnily enough, I talked about The Simpsons
- 17:50Speaker 3: maturing into I think very clever comedy. I think South
- 17:55Speaker 3: Park has kind of done the same, but over a
- 17:57Speaker 3: longer period. Like when it first started, it was pretty
- 17:59Speaker 3: black force comedy, like it was kids being pretty crook,
- 18:03Speaker 3: and therein lies the juxtaposition of these kids who were
- 18:06Speaker 3: just foul mouthed and you know, Eric Cartman was just
- 18:09Speaker 3: causing trouble all the time, and it was it was funny,
- 18:12Speaker 3: but it was it was a feeling blund force instrument.
- 18:14Speaker 3: When I thought Simpsons at the same time was a
- 18:17Speaker 3: much more nuanced comedy. And I mean, I know we're
- 18:21Speaker 3: getting into the weeds here, but I do think South
- 18:23Speaker 3: Park of late has become political commentary, and because of
- 18:26Speaker 3: its quick turnaround, is able to lampoon things that are
- 18:28Speaker 3: happening in the press and the zeitgeist. I think that's
- 18:31Speaker 3: its real strength. But at the time it was when
- 18:33Speaker 3: it first came out, it was funny, but it was
- 18:35Speaker 3: like because of its almost it's shock, that's what made
- 18:38Speaker 3: it funny. When I stuck with the Simps, I liked
- 18:40Speaker 3: them both, but I just always thought with the Simpsons,
- 18:42Speaker 3: it's like this master class in writing. I couldn't have
- 18:46Speaker 3: I don't think I would have consciously told you this
- 18:47Speaker 3: when I was sixteen, but I just was. I just
- 18:50Speaker 3: found it so like we just talked about Rose, but
- 18:53Speaker 3: I didn't know it was a parody of Citizen Kane,
- 18:55Speaker 3: but you kind of knew there was all these layers happening.
- 18:57Speaker 4: Yeah, they're hitting different parts of the funny bone, Reckon
- 19:00Speaker 4: and me. And you can't imagine South Back, for all
- 19:02Speaker 4: its virtues, going deep on a Citizen Kane homage.
- 19:08Speaker 2: Let's rip off. Yeah.
- 19:09Speaker 4: So I mean, yeah, they're just they're approaching it in
- 19:12Speaker 4: different ways.
- 19:13Speaker 2: Next time you join us, you have to come onto
- 19:14Speaker 2: our South Park podcast. We're currently in season nine of
- 19:17Speaker 2: the show. We just did Trapped in the Closet with
- 19:19Speaker 2: Tom Cruise and John Devolta. That's awesome.
- 19:24Speaker 3: I mean, it's funny how I said, like, maybe, hi, Brow,
- 19:27Speaker 3: I'm not sure if that's the right way to describe.
- 19:28Speaker 3: But when in the same episode where the parodied Citizen Kane,
- 19:32Speaker 3: there's also that brilliant scene when the when Bobo gets
- 19:36Speaker 3: caught in the ice and then they make it to
- 19:37Speaker 3: a Poo's quickie mart and the guys are like, you
- 19:39Speaker 3: got a fun better way to make eyes on this
- 19:42Speaker 3: last expedition, got better better way of making eyes and
- 19:49Speaker 3: you just go, that's a really funny, dumb joke.
- 19:54Speaker 2: Are you a big so why did you choose Rose
- 19:56Speaker 2: Budy You're a big fan of the mister Burns character.
- 19:58Speaker 2: Was just the fact that there's so much crammed into
- 20:00Speaker 2: this Well, what was it that made you want to
- 20:02Speaker 2: review rosebud today? Yeah?
- 20:04Speaker 3: Both, I think it's a really well written show. That episode,
- 20:08Speaker 3: I should say, And then yes, I find Monty Burns
- 20:11Speaker 3: hilarious because there's old jokes don't stop getting funny, and
- 20:15Speaker 3: I mean Grandpa Simpson can wheel those out a lot.
- 20:18Speaker 3: But there's also this, and I think it's almost precient
- 20:21Speaker 3: now watching it, because we've seen the rise of all
- 20:24Speaker 3: these tech billionaires and all these people who are just
- 20:27Speaker 3: monstrously rich, especially in America, and it's this overriding capitalism
- 20:32Speaker 3: of people that just want to be rich and do
- 20:34Speaker 3: not care about anything else but getting richer. And Monty
- 20:37Speaker 3: Burn's whole storyline is always him. But there's that beautiful
- 20:42Speaker 3: part when he doesn't want to pay home at all
- 20:45Speaker 3: for the boy, and the roof just rips open and
- 20:50Speaker 3: all that gold and things just drop on his head.
- 20:53Speaker 3: He says, as you can see this police is falling
- 20:54Speaker 3: them off, and it's like it just makes you laugh
- 20:58Speaker 3: because like, this guy is so and so rich and
- 21:01Speaker 3: has no conscience whatsoever, but you're.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Saying to me off the air. That sort of the
- 21:05Speaker 2: theme of this episode is kind of like money happy.
- 21:07Speaker 2: Money can't buy happiness, isn't it, really?
- 21:08Speaker 4: Well, essentially, yeah, I mean, he's got all the money
- 21:10Speaker 4: in the world, but he's longing for this just bedraggled
- 21:13Speaker 4: old bear that he just you know, can't get a
- 21:16Speaker 4: hold well he can't get out of his head. But
- 21:18Speaker 4: also I can't get a hold of He's.
- 21:19Speaker 2: Also keeping a secret as well, which I thought was interesting.
- 21:22Speaker 4: Well yeah, yeah, I mean, well he does want to
- 21:23Speaker 4: show any weakness, yeah, particularly even well particularly the Smithers
- 21:26Speaker 4: I don't think.
- 21:27Speaker 2: But as the Simpsons evolved, the mister Burns character did
- 21:29Speaker 2: show weakness a lot more. But in these earlier seasons
- 21:32Speaker 2: he was the scary billionaire tyrant.
- 21:35Speaker 3: Yes, and then just made like rich people decisions, which
- 21:39Speaker 3: is fun, you know, like you just couldn't give a shit.
- 21:42Speaker 3: I mean I still say it now. At any time
- 21:45Speaker 3: someone who makes a lot of money, I'm like, oh, yeah,
- 21:47Speaker 3: they have to buy another Ivory backscratcher, which is just.
- 21:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:52Speaker 4: But at the very end, I mean everyone's sort of
- 21:54Speaker 4: angling for a payday. Well, certainly the Simpsons family is
- 21:56Speaker 4: angling for a payday. Think, oh, you know we can
- 21:59Speaker 4: get a bit of cash out of by handing over
- 22:01Speaker 4: this bed.
- 22:02Speaker 2: It would, right, And then if you found this old
- 22:04Speaker 2: billionaires teddy bear, you'd try and milk it for all
- 22:06Speaker 2: you could, right, I mean fuck being honest and good
- 22:09Speaker 2: if he wouldn't be the other way around, So get
- 22:11Speaker 2: what you can out of him. I think they should
- 22:12Speaker 2: have tried to rip him off for money.
- 22:14Speaker 4: Well yeah, but I mean the fact that they don't
- 22:16Speaker 4: get anything at the very end is yeah, it's sort
- 22:19Speaker 4: of the underlines the theme of the episode, which is
- 22:22Speaker 4: the other. If they'd got money for it, it would
- 22:25Speaker 4: have sort of negated that.
- 22:27Speaker 3: I think it could have just been a thing. And
- 22:28Speaker 3: I know they're so good at using trokes and then
- 22:31Speaker 3: going in the other direction. I mean, it would be
- 22:33Speaker 3: so saccharin sweet or like if everyone he got his bed,
- 22:35Speaker 3: they got their money and they're like and it's all fine.
- 22:38Speaker 3: And I like it at the end, like is this
- 22:40Speaker 3: a good ending or a bad ending? It's an ending
- 22:41Speaker 3: that'll do my favorite.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Did you have any favorite moments from the episode?
- 22:48Speaker 3: I did like the nice thing, as I mentioned before,
- 22:51Speaker 3: just made me chuckle. And just when he goes yeah,
- 22:56Speaker 3: if you if you know a better way to get
- 22:58Speaker 3: some assle like to hear it, and I like it
- 22:59Speaker 3: how I just go back to each other like, no,
- 23:01Speaker 3: he's got to say it.
- 23:02Speaker 2: They just.
- 23:04Speaker 3: I do love and it's again when you watch it,
- 23:07Speaker 3: and rewatch it. All these little asides Popper that just
- 23:10Speaker 3: make you laugh. Where Sminners is interrogating mister Burns after
- 23:16Speaker 3: the party and going, I don't understand. Look at everything
- 23:18Speaker 3: that you've got, and he says, you've got Arthur's Excalibur,
- 23:22Speaker 3: you've got the only nude photo of Mark Twain, and
- 23:25Speaker 3: you've got the first draft of the Constitution with the
- 23:27Speaker 3: word suckers in it.
- 23:29Speaker 4: That's one of my favorites as well. That just strikes
- 23:31Speaker 4: me as a real sort of Generation X joke. I'm
- 23:34Speaker 4: I'm trying to figure out exactly why that feels so
- 23:37Speaker 4: nineteen ninety three, but it really does.
- 23:39Speaker 3: Yeah, it really does. And I guess again, I mean
- 23:41Speaker 3: maybe with Trump and everything and how much how crazy
- 23:44Speaker 3: America's going, it was like, yeah, that's quite funny. Now
- 23:47Speaker 3: people in dude would ride suckers in a Constitution and
- 23:50Speaker 3: Bilm we got away with it.
- 23:51Speaker 2: For me, I've always loved Homer's reaction to the sitcom.
- 23:55Speaker 2: So you've got the what already? Yes right, everyone remembers there, yes, right?
- 23:59Speaker 2: But I love more Home Were Going because Lisa says,
- 24:01Speaker 2: is it just me or TV getting worse or something
- 24:03Speaker 2: on those lines, and you nothing's still the same. Watch
- 24:05Speaker 2: Out Smithers and.
- 24:06Speaker 3: Yes, I love this show, which is funny in that
- 24:11Speaker 3: it's a TV show that had no regard for TV's
- 24:14Speaker 3: constantly saying this is a you know, like Homer just
- 24:17Speaker 3: sits in front of it, and it's like this, you know,
- 24:21Speaker 3: it just makes him docile. He just sits there. He
- 24:23Speaker 3: wastes his life away, which kind of has parallels now.
- 24:26Speaker 3: When I'm watching it, I'm like, oh, this is if
- 24:29Speaker 3: it was made now, it'd be phones. Like we're just
- 24:31Speaker 3: sitting in front of a phone, We're scrolling, we're doing
- 24:33Speaker 3: all those things. And I just loved it that it
- 24:36Speaker 3: wasn't like other TV shows would never pope fund of
- 24:39Speaker 3: TV because they're on it. Executives would say this isn't happening.
- 24:42Speaker 3: But I just really like that. You're right that home
- 24:45Speaker 3: is just whoever is there being Smithers on Monty Burns.
- 24:48Speaker 3: He's like that, still watch out Smithers.
- 24:53Speaker 2: Now, guys, I hope you're enjoyed this week's show. Remember,

- 25:10Speaker 2: early ad free access to the show. The list goes on. Obviously,

- 25:22Speaker 4: I just love that though, from beginning, when it's Chocolate
- 25:24Speaker 4: Block with all kinds of humor. I mean, you've got
- 25:26Speaker 4: high rail hum, you've got low brow hum, you've got
- 25:29Speaker 4: perfect use of a guest artist, throw away non sequity gags,
- 25:33Speaker 4: I mean, not necessarily non secud I mean that got
- 25:36Speaker 4: that shot of the millk Curtons going past. You know,
- 25:40Speaker 4: I always found it very weird that they would have
- 25:42Speaker 4: pictures of missing children on milk cut but that's.
- 25:44Speaker 2: America for you.
- 25:45Speaker 4: But the poor old millhouse was clearly missing. It's just
- 25:49Speaker 4: bobo bo bo bobo slap nap stickers when poor old
- 25:51Speaker 4: Millhouse is just you know, thrown to the side.
- 25:53Speaker 2: All Homer saying that Flanders smells like manure, Kathleen party
- 25:57Speaker 2: things like that.
- 25:57Speaker 3: Yeah, but even sometimes the darker Joe, like you know
- 26:00Speaker 3: when he said, what do you think you was mister
- 26:03Speaker 3: Burns saying, oh, maybe you're trying to enjoy beer. Well,
- 26:06Speaker 3: you will have stopped every beer truck from coming into Springfield.
- 26:09Speaker 3: And then Barney entswers the door with a cocked pistol
- 26:12Speaker 3: and says, SCRAMs the door on him, and you hear
- 26:16Speaker 3: the gun go off and a woman's shrill scream please.
- 26:21Speaker 2: The thing is though, that was cut out of TV.
- 26:24Speaker 2: So when I used to watch it as a kid,
- 26:25Speaker 2: this episode, that scene and the scene with Homer in
- 26:29Speaker 2: the box like the empty cardboard box. Those two scenes
- 26:32Speaker 2: of the boxes were edited for time. I feel like
- 26:34Speaker 2: the Barney with the gun was edited because of maybe
- 26:36Speaker 2: because of the violence, but also what they edited out was,
- 26:38Speaker 2: you know, at the end of the birthday party when
- 26:41Speaker 2: a riot breaks out and beat everybody up, that was
- 26:43Speaker 2: cut out as well. So I remember watching for the
- 26:45Speaker 2: first time on foxtail because Fox told I mean pay
- 26:47Speaker 2: TV in Australia when he used to air The Simpsons
- 26:49Speaker 2: back in the nineties, they would play the full versions
- 26:52Speaker 2: and we remember seeing it for the first time. It
- 26:54Speaker 2: was like at the caprio moment of that's new, you know.
- 26:58Speaker 3: I mean, Dan, that's quite funny as well. He said
- 27:00Speaker 3: this party is over, and then they've got like what
- 27:03Speaker 3: do you call them like not squat the ride police, right,
- 27:07Speaker 3: just he just forces them upon the guests quarter way
- 27:14Speaker 3: to finish. I mean that little bit after the Ramones play.
- 27:17Speaker 3: It's so funny with Monty goes and the Rolling Stones killed,
- 27:22Speaker 3: and then this says, but but do it do.
- 27:25Speaker 2: As I say? There's I want to touch on the
- 27:28Speaker 2: Ramones because I think that's arguably the greatest guest cameo,
- 27:30Speaker 2: not guest appears, but guest cameo of all time. You've
- 27:34Speaker 2: got that, just the fact that it's the Ramones, You've
- 27:36Speaker 2: got the great direction of the directing of the real
- 27:38Speaker 2: cool panshot as the song's beginning where it passes past Joey.
- 27:42Speaker 2: The song itself is fantastic, but again the button at
- 27:45Speaker 2: the end of have the Rolling Stones Killed? Do as
- 27:47Speaker 2: I say? But also when they say go to hell
- 27:49Speaker 2: you are beastard, and the look on Burns's face as
- 27:52Speaker 2: the curtain is closing on him. It's just there is
- 27:54Speaker 2: so much packed into like fifteen seconds. It's unbelievable.
- 27:57Speaker 4: And each Ramone gets gets the moment to shine. I
- 27:59Speaker 4: get Eats, get a line. It's like, hey, I think
- 28:02Speaker 4: they really liked us.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Also, speaking of songs, my other favorite bit was and
- 28:08Speaker 2: it's something that wouldn't really work now because no one
- 28:11Speaker 2: does it anymore, but it's the big Max song that
- 28:13Speaker 2: Homer sings in the recording studio. Like that is that
- 28:17Speaker 2: was such a pivotal part of what my child was.
- 28:19Speaker 2: Can you do the big Max song? But no one
- 28:20Speaker 2: does it anymore? You know, it's just that that's all
- 28:23Speaker 2: people nam mc donald's for now. It's not the big
- 28:25Speaker 2: Max song. But I think that's such a great side gag.
- 28:28Speaker 3: Yeah, And then he gets to the end in Homer
- 28:30Speaker 3: you're drawing on the mic again.
- 28:31Speaker 4: Well, yeah, it's it's hats on hats on hats because
- 28:34Speaker 4: it's like Homer saying, oh, I can get what I
- 28:36Speaker 4: always won of my own recording here. It's like, okay,
- 28:38Speaker 4: it's a gag in itself. And then you're seeing what
- 28:39Speaker 4: the McDonald's themes are and he's drawing on the mic.
- 28:42Speaker 4: It's like, oh, it's the gift that keeps on giving.
- 28:45Speaker 2: Next question, you there eating the Beast. Let's answer some
- 28:48Speaker 2: trivia questions. I asked you a question here, Dave. Let's
- 28:50Speaker 2: see if you can answer it for us. Okay, what
- 28:52Speaker 2: did Marge get mister Burns for his birthday?
- 28:57Speaker 3: Dustbuster? Yes, look on her face of oh I thought
- 29:01Speaker 3: I've nailed it, and you.
- 29:03Speaker 2: Can you can imagine Marge thought that would be a
- 29:04Speaker 2: great gift. There's obviously something that she would use all
- 29:06Speaker 2: the time. It's very practical. As a kid though, you
- 29:09Speaker 2: always had those relatives that brought you practical gifts. And
- 29:12Speaker 2: it's like I didn't fucking want pencils. I wanted a
- 29:14Speaker 2: street shark's toy. Look what are you doing?
- 29:16Speaker 3: Yeah? But Dando, this is the thing other be in
- 29:18Speaker 3: Brunswick and for anyone oversees who's listening, this is very
- 29:21Speaker 3: much there with the very left of center. It's the
- 29:24Speaker 3: very you know, I think Portland's like this in Americas,
- 29:29Speaker 3: the hipster central. Yeah, exactly. So the parents at parties
- 29:32Speaker 3: very much do this. They're like, oh, I've bought your
- 29:35Speaker 3: child a book that they may enjoy. And it's always
- 29:38Speaker 3: you look on the kids' faces like are you shit me?
- 29:40Speaker 3: And the parents are like, wonderful, you're improving their education.
- 29:44Speaker 3: Will never touched that book.
- 29:46Speaker 4: You might as well have got on socks. It's like, no,
- 29:49Speaker 4: I'm unleashing your child's creativity.
- 29:51Speaker 2: But you may as well be like, does your kid
- 29:53Speaker 2: watch Bluey at all? Yes? You know how Lucky his
- 29:56Speaker 2: dad's like the cool dad at parties. Need to be
- 29:57Speaker 2: Lucky's dad. You need to be the guy that just
- 29:58Speaker 2: gives the cool fucking toy press. Everyone's like they will
- 30:01Speaker 2: always invite your kids to party because they know they're
- 30:03Speaker 2: going to get a good present.
- 30:04Speaker 3: Guys, here's some heaps. Normal, it's not an alcoholic beer,
- 30:07Speaker 3: but so it's fine. Don't worry you right, girl, can
- 30:09Speaker 3: have it, don't worry about it. As a side note,
- 30:12Speaker 3: with that dust bustard, I did like it. Where's the
- 30:14Speaker 3: pans across? There's a unicorn just on some food.
- 30:18Speaker 2: I mean, Australia even gets a reference in that scene there.
- 30:20Speaker 2: We're all holding up candles in the name of mister Burn.
- 30:22Speaker 4: Yeah, well done us.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Just have to turn your head to see it. Oh,
- 30:24Speaker 2: no time, I shall ask you tributes.
- 30:29Speaker 4: According to the newspaper, mister Burn's credits his long life
- 30:31Speaker 4: to Satan. He's handing over a check to the Prince
- 30:35Speaker 4: of Darkness. But how much?
- 30:37Speaker 3: Oh I didn't because I didn't notice. I clocked the
- 30:40Speaker 3: headline which made me laugh. There are five and at
- 30:43Speaker 3: five million.
- 30:45Speaker 2: Doctor Evil says this as part of one of his
- 30:46Speaker 2: famous quotes. Oh really, I think it's Doctor Evil.
- 30:50Speaker 5: A billion dollars, a billion dollars initiallys a million dollar,
- 30:56Speaker 5: one billion dollars by the way, just great animation, just
- 30:59Speaker 5: great look on Satan's face there is like he's so happy.
- 31:02Speaker 2: Yeah. My next question for you is how many channels
- 31:05Speaker 2: does Springfield have?
- 31:07Speaker 3: Seventy eight? What?
- 31:09Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 31:09Speaker 3: Wow, I remember that stood out because you've been watching
- 31:12Speaker 3: it again. We never got to that point in Australia
- 31:14Speaker 3: did we We now have streaming services and things, but
- 31:16Speaker 3: it never got to that point where you, like friends
- 31:18Speaker 3: will go to America and be like they've got so
- 31:20Speaker 3: many channels and we still had five.
- 31:24Speaker 2: We had Foxtael. Basically that's what you want to get
- 31:26Speaker 2: more chance yet Fox, did you have Foxtail as a kid.
- 31:28Speaker 3: No, My parents were never fought me out for Foxtel
- 31:31Speaker 3: and yeah, and so it was always that it was
- 31:34Speaker 3: just yeah, you went through you were lucky to get
- 31:37Speaker 3: SPS to be.
- 31:37Speaker 2: Honest, yeah, channel thirty one.
- 31:39Speaker 4: Yeah, but it's only we always talk about when we
- 31:41Speaker 4: were talking with guests. Usually it's that having that limited
- 31:46Speaker 4: amount of options meant that you had to watch all
- 31:49Speaker 4: that stuff that you were talking about earlier day. You'd
- 31:51Speaker 4: be watching George Burns movies or Ab and Costello stuff,
- 31:54Speaker 4: and as a result, you got this widely curated sort
- 31:58Speaker 4: of diet of entertainment and culture. And yeah, your your
- 32:03Speaker 4: sensibility has got shaped as a result of that. I mean, yeah,
- 32:05Speaker 4: you watched a lot of good stuff, you also watched
- 32:07Speaker 4: a lot of crap, and you were able to discern
- 32:08Speaker 4: the good stuff from the bad.
- 32:10Speaker 3: Yeah. Guy, it's a really interesting point too, and we
- 32:12Speaker 3: all had the same Touchstanns like, yeah, it's funny now
- 32:15Speaker 3: my kids because you can skip an intro to anything
- 32:19Speaker 3: online and streaming. And when we watch we watch a
- 32:22Speaker 3: Wizard of Oz with him, and of course those old movies.
- 32:25Speaker 3: The credits are at the start. It's three minutes of
- 32:27Speaker 3: just acknowledging the people who put this amazing motion picture together,
- 32:30Speaker 3: and they're like, they're looking at me, like what the
- 32:32Speaker 3: fuck is pushed the middle button. And then it was
- 32:36Speaker 3: only last night actually that I was singing the eighties
- 32:41Speaker 3: sitcom tunes and then watching my wife as I'm like
- 32:45Speaker 3: because I remember them all, And then I'd start and
- 32:47Speaker 3: she'd go, oh yeah, and then she'd jump in as
- 32:50Speaker 3: we all start singing the Family Ties theme song or
- 32:53Speaker 3: whatever the hell it was, and you just don't have
- 32:55Speaker 3: that anymore. Like there are certain things that pierced through,
- 32:57Speaker 3: but not necessarily.
- 32:59Speaker 4: I say to my shame that some forty years on,
- 33:01Speaker 4: I can still sing the theme to Growing Pains. Show
- 33:03Speaker 4: me that smile again.
- 33:07Speaker 2: I put Space Gm on for my sunny. Had a
- 33:09Speaker 2: couple of mates over on on Saturday night, and it
- 33:11Speaker 2: was interesting because we're talking about the skip intro right,
- 33:13Speaker 2: and my son loves Space Jam, one of his favorite movies.
- 33:16Speaker 2: And during the opening credits of Space Jam, there's fucking
- 33:18Speaker 2: shots of MJ Do and slam Dune Space Jam. The
- 33:21Speaker 2: song's playing, it's great, and one kid's just like, when's
- 33:24Speaker 2: a movie star? When's a movie star? I'm like, kid,
- 33:27Speaker 2: are you fucking your eyes working? Why would you want
- 33:29Speaker 2: to skip this? But it's like it's just that mentality
- 33:31Speaker 2: of now, oh the credits that means we need to
- 33:33Speaker 2: skip this part. It's just it's just sort of second
- 33:35Speaker 2: nature to so many kids. Now you see those credits
- 33:37Speaker 2: and it means quick, skip, skip, skip. This isn't this
- 33:40Speaker 2: isn't anything we have to watch.
- 33:41Speaker 3: Yeah, And I've now gotten to the point where I'm
- 33:43Speaker 3: sure I'm not on the level of you guys, but
- 33:45Speaker 3: I now get into movies and things and quite often
- 33:48Speaker 3: and even when I'm watching now, especially Australian content, because
- 33:51Speaker 3: I might know some of the people who are involved.
- 33:53Speaker 3: Where now I want to watch the end credits and
- 33:55Speaker 3: the streaming service is like, right, we'll move on. No,
- 33:58Speaker 3: no know my mates and grip over in our a.
- 34:02Speaker 3: I just want to see us involves in this film.
- 34:04Speaker 4: Yeah, it's like you're playing PlayStations, don't trying to find
- 34:06Speaker 4: the right but to get to that little box up
- 34:08Speaker 4: in the right hand corner.
- 34:08Speaker 2: It's like, I want to watch the credits. By the way, Sorry, I'm.
- 34:10Speaker 4: Just I wasn't laughing at Dana, but I was laughing
- 34:13Speaker 4: the fact that the kid who wanted to you know,
- 34:15Speaker 4: skipad basically sounds like a teamster from New York. Why
- 34:20Speaker 4: are we watching this?
- 34:22Speaker 2: He was so angry, He's like, why are we Will
- 34:25Speaker 2: you skip this?
- 34:25Speaker 3: Please?
- 34:26Speaker 5: When's the gate?
- 34:26Speaker 2: When's the movie start? I'm like, this is the movie
- 34:29Speaker 2: kid who's running this show. But we just were talking
- 34:33Speaker 2: to you off air, just Before we recorded this, we
- 34:34Speaker 2: spoke to Matt someone from the Simpsons, and this year
- 34:37Speaker 2: they have cut out couch gags. The couchhags just don't
- 34:40Speaker 2: exist anymore, so they can cram in more and the
- 34:42Speaker 2: opening interest, so they can cram in more storytelling, say,
- 34:45Speaker 2: But also there's a mentality of how many people actually
- 34:48Speaker 2: watch the intro anymore, Like when you when you pick
- 34:50Speaker 2: up Disney Plus, we just go skip intro, and when
- 34:53Speaker 2: you click skip intro on The Simpsons, it skips the
- 34:55Speaker 2: couch gag. So it's like, is there a point even
- 34:57Speaker 2: having couch gags anymore?
- 34:58Speaker 3: Isn't that funny? Because I mean, the Cat's was seminal
- 35:01Speaker 3: because it was part of the show. Because the intro
- 35:03Speaker 3: had never been changed before. You would just give into
- 35:05Speaker 3: the fact that you're like, yeah, growing Pains is going right,
- 35:09Speaker 3: We'll just sit through the song. This is fine, this
- 35:11Speaker 3: is what happens, and then we'll start and then to
- 35:13Speaker 3: have something different happen, you're like, Wow, they're cramming entertainment
- 35:16Speaker 3: in everywhere.
- 35:17Speaker 2: I feel like a bit of old. I knew I
- 35:19Speaker 2: was getting old. My son started watching Fresh Prince at
- 35:21Speaker 2: Ballet because I love that show. When I was a kid,
- 35:23Speaker 2: and I was getting dinner ready and he skipped the
- 35:25Speaker 2: intro and I grabbed the romte from his hand and
- 35:28Speaker 2: I rewound it, and he goes, what are you doing?
- 35:30Speaker 2: I said, you will listen to this theme song because
- 35:32Speaker 2: there's part of the show. And ever since then it's
- 35:35Speaker 2: almost like he's afraid to skip intros.
- 35:38Speaker 4: And then and said, keep that song at your fucking man,
- 35:46Speaker 4: I have a.
- 35:46Speaker 2: Trivia question for my question, we'll get into our review.
- 35:50Speaker 4: When Burns and Smithers are attempting to burgle the Simpson house,
- 35:54Speaker 4: they say, how long in and out?
- 35:57Speaker 3: Eighteen seconds?
- 35:58Speaker 4: Holy shit, Dave Hanton.
- 36:00Speaker 2: But I didn't get that.
- 36:02Speaker 3: Yeah, because again I watched it and it made me
- 36:05Speaker 3: laugh when he says because firstly Flanner's pokes his head
- 36:08Speaker 3: up from the roof. It's a very Flanders. I can't
- 36:12Speaker 3: remember what he says for, something like what can I
- 36:14Speaker 3: do you for? Like that these men are dressed in
- 36:17Speaker 3: all black in the middle of the night, and he's like, oh, yeah,
- 36:20Speaker 3: just some friends. And then when he says in and
- 36:22Speaker 3: out and out and seconds And as I mentioned earlier
- 36:25Speaker 3: that Smith is enjoying their bodies snatching together.
- 36:30Speaker 2: Also love too. His great sound editing that part because
- 36:33Speaker 2: they didn't just have flanners go thud. It's thought he's
- 36:36Speaker 2: falling down a ladder. It's not a good fall for
- 36:39Speaker 2: Flanders there. But let's get into our review, shall we
- 36:42Speaker 2: of Rosebud. So the visual airday of this episode was
- 36:45Speaker 2: October twenty first, nineteen ninety three. Now we do a
- 36:48Speaker 2: bit here on the show where we talk about the
- 36:49Speaker 2: top three films of the US box office when this
- 36:52Speaker 2: episode aired. So number three was Cool Runnings. Number two
- 36:56Speaker 2: was Beverly Hillbillies, remember that TV adaptation, and number one
- 37:01Speaker 2: was one of your favorites, demolition.
- 37:02Speaker 4: Man, moly Stallone and Snipes together at last.
- 37:06Speaker 3: Please, Well, that was that was very seminal in the
- 37:09Speaker 3: nineties because it was Wesley Snipes's haircut that led to
- 37:12Speaker 3: Dennis Rodman bleaching his hair blonde. He saw Wesley Snipes
- 37:15Speaker 3: doing it. Really yeah, he was like, this is cool,
- 37:17Speaker 3: and that's why this is the most nineties conversation I've
- 37:20Speaker 3: had in a very long time. It's good, right to
- 37:24Speaker 3: be honest.
- 37:26Speaker 2: Guy always brings up there's a bit in Demolition Man
- 37:28Speaker 2: that would never fly today. Have do you know the
- 37:30Speaker 2: bit we're talking about where he we wait to say
- 37:34Speaker 2: what he says, but he sees an Asian guy.
- 37:36Speaker 3: Have you seen I haven't seen demolition Man in a
- 37:40Speaker 3: long time?
- 37:41Speaker 4: In the In the yeah, farth long future of Demolition Man,
- 37:44Speaker 4: people are basically there's a very Asian influence in the
- 37:47Speaker 4: way people are dressing. People sort of walking around in
- 37:50Speaker 4: kimonos a lot, and look, okay, fine, I'll pull the
- 37:53Speaker 4: rip cold on this one. Yeah, Wesley Snipes walks past them. Yeah,
- 37:56Speaker 4: some people are dressings who may actually be Asian, basically
- 37:58Speaker 4: says the Ching Chong Qing Chong so.
- 38:00Speaker 2: And he just says that, Wesley, what Apparently that wasn't
- 38:04Speaker 2: that improvised? I think so, it wasn't in the script
- 38:06Speaker 2: and they left it in the movie. Were have you said?
- 38:12Speaker 2: Let Wesley stops is the villain of Demolition. Do not
- 38:16Speaker 2: do this at home, kids, it helps. The one thing
- 38:18Speaker 2: we always say in our south Park podcast is people
- 38:21Speaker 2: always say, people who don't like south Park say it's
- 38:23Speaker 2: just crude. It's this out and the other day I
- 38:24Speaker 2: can't believe they're doing this, they're doing that, But it's
- 38:27Speaker 2: it's look at which characters are doing this and which
- 38:29Speaker 2: characters are saying this. They are the bad guys. The
- 38:31Speaker 2: whole point is it is bad to be doing these things.
- 38:34Speaker 2: It is bad to be saying these things. That's the
- 38:36Speaker 2: whole point exactly.
- 38:38Speaker 3: I mean you get a lot of this in stand
- 38:40Speaker 3: up where people go they said something on stage, it's like, yeah,
- 38:42Speaker 3: they're not happy with it. Like, you still do have
- 38:44Speaker 3: to point out, like if someone's yelled, you know, a
- 38:47Speaker 3: homophobic slur at you, and you said, this person yelled
- 38:50Speaker 3: at me, like I can't believe they've said that word,
- 38:51Speaker 3: it's like, yeah, because they're not cool with it. That's
- 38:54Speaker 3: just pointing out that they they weren't okay. And you
- 38:57Speaker 3: can't lampoon something without addressing it correct. How often do
- 39:01Speaker 3: you write jokes and go, it's a good joke, but
- 39:05Speaker 3: I just know I can't do it. Can I lend
- 39:07Speaker 3: the plane on this one?
- 39:09Speaker 2: The negative is far away the positives here.
- 39:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean there's always ones that you kind of
- 39:13Speaker 3: laugh and I hate to say it, but usually your
- 39:15Speaker 3: shelter of the comics and they laugh and they go dead.
- 39:17Speaker 3: I wouldn't do that one.
- 39:20Speaker 4: Just because it's so it could be so easily misconstrued.
- 39:24Speaker 4: I mean, you're going in with the best of intentions.
- 39:27Speaker 3: Yes, can be misconstrued. I mean there is that thing
- 39:29Speaker 3: if people do go, look that you're mentioning a topic
- 39:32Speaker 3: that can make people tighten up a bit.
- 39:34Speaker 4: What's that saying Depiction does not equal endorsement, as they say.
- 39:40Speaker 3: Yeah, And I mean it is a it is a
- 39:42Speaker 3: strange area of that one because also there's that the
- 39:47Speaker 3: situation of irony where sometimes you're saying something out of irony,
- 39:51Speaker 3: but it's the people that you're lampooning who then use
- 39:54Speaker 3: it to be like, oh, this is a good thing.
- 39:56Speaker 3: Like the best example I can think of is what
- 40:00Speaker 3: was the movie with Gordon Gecko? What was it Wall Street? Yeah,
- 40:03Speaker 3: and that last speech of him with greet is good,
- 40:05Speaker 3: Like that's lamb hoooning the whole idea of stockbrokers and
- 40:09Speaker 3: the fact that all they care about is money and
- 40:10Speaker 3: they have no morals. But yet all the stock brokers
- 40:13Speaker 3: in New York like this is amazing, and could quote
- 40:15Speaker 3: that thing end to end. So it's not really then
- 40:17Speaker 3: lampouning it anymore, and it's not ironic. They're actually enjoying
- 40:21Speaker 3: what's being said.
- 40:23Speaker 2: Oh yeah, all people who.
- 40:25Speaker 4: Had a lot of people coming up with the director
- 40:27Speaker 4: of the movie of American psycho saying, you know he's
- 40:29Speaker 4: got a great morning routine. Is that Patrick Bateman?
- 40:33Speaker 3: Yeah, so sometimes you can call yourself and you know
- 40:36Speaker 3: that's the trap you can also fall into. But I
- 40:39Speaker 3: mean it happens a lot with comedy writers. I think
- 40:41Speaker 3: what people what finally makes the editor? I think in
- 40:46Speaker 3: and I haven't been in too many writer rooms like
- 40:48Speaker 3: the Simpsons, but I'm saying with stand ups, and I
- 40:51Speaker 3: know a lot of my mates are writers, the writer's
- 40:54Speaker 3: room is just bare knuckle brawling. We bring it back
- 40:56Speaker 3: to a palatable level by the time something has to
- 40:59Speaker 3: go to where or has to go to the stage.
- 41:01Speaker 3: So sometimes when you just ran comics, yeah, it can
- 41:04Speaker 3: be a big crook with comedy.
- 41:06Speaker 2: Do you sort of stick around? Are your best mates
- 41:08Speaker 2: in comedy the ones that you started out with or
- 41:09Speaker 2: do you find and make new friends along the way
- 41:11Speaker 2: or do you find you just sort of stick with
- 41:12Speaker 2: your crew?
- 41:14Speaker 3: Good question, And it's the friends we make along the way. No,
- 41:17Speaker 3: it's it all of the above. You know, there's mates
- 41:21Speaker 3: that you start with and then you stay friends with them,
- 41:25Speaker 3: and then there's also yeah, comics that you yeah, you
- 41:29Speaker 3: just find And I mean we're a bit of like
- 41:31Speaker 3: a traveling circus, because there's also a thing of you
- 41:34Speaker 3: sometimes see your mates less and less the more that
- 41:36Speaker 3: you gig because you used to gig together on lineups.
- 41:41Speaker 3: But then as we all get our own work and
- 41:43Speaker 3: maybe become headliners and tour.
- 41:44Speaker 2: On your own own families.
- 41:46Speaker 3: Yeah, that you don't do shows together as much because
- 41:49Speaker 3: they're doing their show and you're doing your show, so
- 41:52Speaker 3: you maybe don't see them as much. But then when
- 41:53Speaker 3: you do get to hang out, you so far.
- 41:55Speaker 4: I've got to say something like the Melbourne International Comedy
- 41:58Speaker 4: Festival must be a blast in that regard is oh,
- 42:00Speaker 4: you know we're all here under the same under the
- 42:02Speaker 4: same tent.
- 42:03Speaker 3: Yeah, it is heaps of fun. I mean Adelaide Fringe
- 42:05Speaker 3: I always find is the one where it's a fringe festival,
- 42:09Speaker 3: which is which means for a lot of us we
- 42:11Speaker 3: can say, oh yeah, if a joke doesn't work, like yeah,
- 42:13Speaker 3: I mean it was up, it was, it doesn't matter.
- 42:17Speaker 3: And then we're also a lot of us are away
- 42:18Speaker 3: from home and now we've got families. You can kind
- 42:20Speaker 3: of hang out and be like, yeah, I'm free during
- 42:22Speaker 3: the day, what do you want to do? Like you
- 42:23Speaker 3: gets to hang out with your mates. Finally, because when
- 42:25Speaker 3: it is back in Melbourne I live, you've still got
- 42:27Speaker 3: kid drop off, kid pick up, You've got you know,
- 42:30Speaker 3: just things that you got to do in everyday life.
- 42:32Speaker 3: But when you're away like that, it's fun.
- 42:34Speaker 2: I was telling guy, because I've got a kid, two kids,
- 42:36Speaker 2: one's five, don't forget the other one. Two children. It
- 42:39Speaker 2: one's seven, one's five and five. I was just out
- 42:41Speaker 2: of school, but I was saying, when you're a parent
- 42:43Speaker 2: of young kids, no matter when you think you've got
- 42:45Speaker 2: your life in check, there's always fucking something that happens
- 42:48Speaker 2: to throw you off track again. You know, you can
- 42:49Speaker 2: get you can be as organized as you want, but
- 42:52Speaker 2: then something will happen. You know, you're just like why why,
- 42:55Speaker 2: but you know, but you wouldn't have it any other way.
- 42:58Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a good reminder. So you know, man makes
- 43:01Speaker 3: plans and God laughs, like you just go, yeah, they're
- 43:04Speaker 3: always going to and they also it's good for me too,
- 43:08Speaker 3: the things that they'd throw at you. Like it was
- 43:10Speaker 3: a couple of weeks ago, I was actually shooting this
- 43:13Speaker 3: scripted comedy that's I think going to be coming out
- 43:15Speaker 3: midyear for the ABC here in Australia and we had
- 43:20Speaker 3: some friends over it. But I said, I've got to
- 43:21Speaker 3: learn these lines because we're shooting tomorrow. And the friend
- 43:25Speaker 3: who was over, she had her sons over and they're
- 43:27Speaker 3: the same age as my daughter's, or primary school age,
- 43:30Speaker 3: and she was talking to her son, going, yeah, because
- 43:31Speaker 3: Dave learns those words because he's going to be shooting
- 43:34Speaker 3: these things for TV. And she was nice enough to say,
- 43:36Speaker 3: she goes, because Dave's famous. And my youngest was sitting
- 43:40Speaker 3: on my lap and he goes, no, he's not. He
- 43:43Speaker 3: hasn't been on TV in the ages, like he hasn't
- 43:45Speaker 3: done anything. And I'm like, oh cool, thanks mate, I
- 43:47Speaker 3: really appreciate it.
- 43:50Speaker 2: I saw you did the p's and v's bit about
- 43:52Speaker 2: your kids as well.
- 43:54Speaker 3: Yes there's all that stuff. I mean, kids just do
- 43:56Speaker 3: tend to serve up all crazy things. But if you
- 44:00Speaker 3: haven't seen it, this is all a true story. Which
- 44:02Speaker 3: is a daycare and this is very Brunswick. On one
- 44:05Speaker 3: day they taught all the kids or their entire body,
- 44:09Speaker 3: including the special areas, which I can't speak for you guy,
- 44:12Speaker 3: but we never had that growing up. You know, no
- 44:14Speaker 3: one spoke about it. You got given where did I
- 44:16Speaker 3: come from the book and she comes home and for
- 44:24Speaker 3: the next six weeks, all she's talking about is penises
- 44:26Speaker 3: and vaginas because that's what they spoke about in the class.
- 44:29Speaker 3: Did for six weeks, and I finally said to her, Hey,
- 44:32Speaker 3: it's fine that you know those words, but just stop.
- 44:34Speaker 3: Don't do it outside of the house, okay. And then
- 44:36Speaker 3: I go to pick her up the next night from
- 44:38Speaker 3: daycare and she just across the room just goes, Daddy,
- 44:41Speaker 3: you're a penis, like straight across the room to everyone.
- 44:44Speaker 3: And then this is all true, And I say it
- 44:46Speaker 3: in a bit. I was never quick on my feet,
- 44:48Speaker 3: but I raised my voice to act like I had
- 44:50Speaker 3: some authority in the daycare. And then I said to her, hey,
- 44:53Speaker 3: you can only talk about dad's penis when we get
- 44:55Speaker 3: hard and oh no, what am I doing? And that
- 45:02Speaker 3: is all word for word true. So that's the great
- 45:04Speaker 3: thing with kids. They also serve up those stories.
- 45:06Speaker 2: Do you feel like your comedy has now you're talking
- 45:08Speaker 2: about the simszens evolved and do you think that your
- 45:10Speaker 2: comedy's evolved now they're becoming a parent in things? Do
- 45:12Speaker 2: you feel like your brand of humor has shifted in
- 45:14Speaker 2: some way?
- 45:15Speaker 3: I mean dando, you could say devolved. I mean, I
- 45:17Speaker 3: know something. There's always a slide on comedians where they go,
- 45:20Speaker 3: what are you going to talk about your kids now
- 45:21Speaker 3: that you've become a father.
- 45:22Speaker 5: It's like, yeah, because there's nothing, what else am I doing?
- 45:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean yeah, it's it's certainly changed. I mean
- 45:31Speaker 3: my family laughs because they said it's just moved downhill.
- 45:34Speaker 3: Like I used to talk about when I started my
- 45:36Speaker 3: mom on stage, and then it went to my wife,
- 45:39Speaker 3: and now it's down to my kids. So my mum
- 45:42Speaker 3: and my wife are now like, oh great, we dodged
- 45:44Speaker 3: a bullet. Now we don't get spoken about.
- 45:46Speaker 2: You get some cats soon you're talking about the cats.
- 45:48Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly, exactly. But actually there was a nice thing
- 45:51Speaker 3: about Rosebud because of that through line of Homer doing
- 45:55Speaker 3: the roast on Monty Burns. It was as a stand
- 45:59Speaker 3: up and this wasn't my intention why I picked the episode,
- 46:01Speaker 3: But when I'm watching it again, I was like, oh god,
- 46:03Speaker 3: I've been in that situation where you've just been thrown
- 46:06Speaker 3: under the bus on an intro. Then you've got to
- 46:10Speaker 3: bring the comedy.
- 46:12Speaker 2: Oh man, that's one of my favorite visits. The Poor
- 46:15Speaker 2: Dog quietly awful, man.
- 46:20Speaker 3: I've done it before. When you go to a fundraising
- 46:22Speaker 3: and you're like, yeah, certainly it'd be great to like,
- 46:23Speaker 3: I'll help you guys out, and then beforehand they will
- 46:26Speaker 3: talk about whatever tragic thing they're raising funds for. It's
- 46:29Speaker 3: for a very good cause, but they pull at the
- 46:32Speaker 3: heartstrings and there's some like video footage sometimes of animals
- 46:35Speaker 3: who have just been mistreated, and then they're like, well,
- 46:38Speaker 3: we all need to laugh now, and you're like, oh.
- 46:42Speaker 4: There are some of the comedy stylings of Dave Thorne exactly.
- 46:46Speaker 3: You know who told me a story recently, because it's
- 46:48Speaker 3: always corporate gigs, like some calldor from comedians you do
- 46:51Speaker 3: corporate gigs is they pay quite well, you've got a mortgage,
- 46:53Speaker 3: You go, yeah, sure, I'll turn up to this thing.
- 46:55Speaker 3: And Claire Hooper, who's a great comic, who was telling
- 46:59Speaker 3: me recently as he was doing a corporate gig, and
- 47:02Speaker 3: she said it was for more of a blue collar business.
- 47:05Speaker 3: I can't really remember what it was. But as they
- 47:07Speaker 3: always do, the CEO MD whatever gets up and says
- 47:11Speaker 3: he goes, all right, guys, you know you always get
- 47:13Speaker 3: a stand up comedian at these things, and you know
- 47:15Speaker 3: this year they said we had to have a woman,
- 47:16Speaker 3: so here she is deep. That was the introduction for
- 47:22Speaker 3: Claire Whopy. You're like, what what what made you think
- 47:25Speaker 3: this was gonna be good?
- 47:28Speaker 2: I'm sure she nailed it though, right, oh it.
- 47:30Speaker 3: Made Yeah, Claire's a great act, but it was it's like, god,
- 47:33Speaker 3: what's yeah. People think they just don't think it doesn't
- 47:37Speaker 3: make a difference. They're almost like, well, you all funny,
- 47:38Speaker 3: you'd be able to work through it, and you're like,
- 47:39Speaker 3: not really, that's the equivalent of someone just tripping you
- 47:43Speaker 3: up at the starter's block of one hundred meters and
- 47:45Speaker 3: then going what, you're fast, you can work it out.
- 47:48Speaker 2: How pivotal to the bit is the intro by the
- 47:50Speaker 2: by the host, like is a pivotal part of the act,
- 47:53Speaker 2: right yeah?
- 47:55Speaker 3: I mean especially in those environments because people don't maybe
- 47:58Speaker 3: have a touchdown it who you are, and so you
- 48:00Speaker 3: kind of go, yeah, it does help. I mean I
- 48:02Speaker 3: did a thing for I don't want to throw the
- 48:05Speaker 3: person under the bus, but it was for It was
- 48:08Speaker 3: a room full of people from media, and so there
- 48:10Speaker 3: was a bit of like and there's sometimes not a
- 48:12Speaker 3: great audience because I always have respect for anyone who
- 48:15Speaker 3: hosts an awards not or anything that's got to do
- 48:18Speaker 3: with TV or like music or cinema. But there always
- 48:22Speaker 3: the people that are like, yeah, whatever I can do,
- 48:25Speaker 3: I could have done that better.
- 48:26Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 48:27Speaker 3: And I was doing one of those gigs and I
- 48:29Speaker 3: just said to the host, because they were a bit chatty,
- 48:30Speaker 3: I said, if you could just get them to be quiet,
- 48:32Speaker 3: it will be amazing. Just I don't need a big intro.
- 48:34Speaker 3: If you can just get them to settle and do everything,
- 48:36Speaker 3: and then it's fine. Because it's a comic. You need
- 48:38Speaker 3: people to listen. It's not like music. You can't listen
- 48:40Speaker 3: to it in the background. You need to catch it.
- 48:44Speaker 3: The host then went, oh, gay, guys, this next act
- 48:46Speaker 3: bit of a prima Donna need you guys to shut up.
- 48:49Speaker 3: And you're like, not exactly the greatest way to couch
- 48:52Speaker 3: it could not high maintenance and the fact that I
- 48:56Speaker 3: just want people to listen.
- 48:57Speaker 2: Now, guys, I hope you're enjoyed this week's show. Remember,

- 49:26Speaker 2: but as well again with rosebud here. So yeah. Written
- 49:29Speaker 2: by Swartzworld, one of the most iconic Simpsons writers of
- 49:31Speaker 2: all time, He's just this feels like a very Swartzwater
- 49:34Speaker 2: episode and directed by Wes Archer the cash Gagles. The
- 49:37Speaker 2: family find identical versions of themselves on the couch and
- 49:39Speaker 2: are confused, but the episode kicks off here with a
- 49:41Speaker 2: direct shot from Citizen Kane. Now we're touching on early
- 49:44Speaker 2: how it's a Citizen Kane parody. I still don't know
- 49:46Speaker 2: how much of it is a parody. You want to
- 49:47Speaker 2: just give us a quick little recap of how much
- 49:49Speaker 2: of it is actually a parody of Citizen Kane.
- 49:51Speaker 4: Yeah, certainly that opening scene is a shop the shop,
- 49:53Speaker 4: but of course they throw a little gag in there.
- 49:54Speaker 4: With the odds. This is clearly the most forbidding place
- 49:58Speaker 4: in town. You know, either got the hands and got
- 49:59Speaker 4: the electrified fans, but you've also got free kittens in
- 50:03Speaker 4: choir within.
- 50:04Speaker 2: But yeah, the way that shot is.
- 50:07Speaker 4: Done with the zoom, well, the pan up over the
- 50:10Speaker 4: fence and going in the window this palatial estate. That's
- 50:13Speaker 4: very much Citizen Kane.
- 50:14Speaker 2: The story of Kine is a kid joins family with
- 50:17Speaker 2: a billionaire or something.
- 50:18Speaker 4: Well yeah, I mean yeah, the driving well, sort of
- 50:21Speaker 4: the inciting incident of Citizen Kane is this, this young
- 50:24Speaker 4: boy is basically taken away from his poor but loving
- 50:28Speaker 4: family and place in the care of the beginning, he
- 50:31Speaker 4: has given everything he wants but love essentially, So that's yeah.
- 50:36Speaker 4: They replay that with a bit of a twist on that,
- 50:38Speaker 4: I think in Citizen Kane. Not that he goes away reluctantly,
- 50:42Speaker 4: but he's kind of like, I mean, sort of two
- 50:44Speaker 4: minds about this. But his parents are saying, this wealthy
- 50:48Speaker 4: old man can give you a much better life. I
- 50:50Speaker 4: don't know, can I get to miss my parents? Mister
- 50:53Speaker 4: Burn's like, let's roll. He's got his eyes on the
- 50:56Speaker 4: prize from the get go, and then you cut mister
- 51:00Speaker 4: Burn's waking up or no, he's holding the globe that
- 51:03Speaker 4: rolls down and never never break, never break it. I
- 51:07Speaker 4: think I think I've forgotten about this gag that Smithers
- 51:10Speaker 4: comes in and they're just broken globes all over the place.
- 51:13Speaker 4: But yeah, that's that's certainly a shot from Citizen Kan
- 51:16Speaker 4: that I think Wells was a bit full of himself
- 51:19Speaker 4: doing a fancy camera angle through the broken glass and
- 51:21Speaker 4: all that.
- 51:22Speaker 2: I really liked the transition to there where Bobo's in
- 51:25Speaker 2: the snow. Then it pans out from the globe like
- 51:27Speaker 2: he was inside the snow globe. Yeah, yes, this is
- 51:30Speaker 2: where Smithers walks in. Because again, as I was touching earlier,
- 51:33Speaker 2: he hasn't told Smither's about this Boba. This is a
- 51:34Speaker 2: secret that he holds dear to himself. Do you think
- 51:36Speaker 2: that's a case of he's trying to forget about it,
- 51:38Speaker 2: so just don't bring up with anybody, always embarrassed by it.
- 51:41Speaker 4: I think it's more like a yeah, he'd used it
- 51:44Speaker 4: as a sign of weakness. Yeah, yeah, that he would
- 51:46Speaker 4: be reliant on anything, reliant on anything for anything.
- 51:51Speaker 3: You know.
- 51:52Speaker 4: It's like, no, I've got no emotional needs whatsoever. I'm
- 51:55Speaker 4: just about the accumulation of filthy Luca.
- 51:57Speaker 2: I just love the disdain he has for Smithers, though
- 51:59Speaker 2: the Smith's dedicates his entire life to helping him. He
- 52:01Speaker 2: walks in, Oh, it's you bedpans under the pillow. Great, disgusting.
- 52:08Speaker 3: My pillow under the.
- 52:14Speaker 2: Under the pillow. Yeah, but spiders asked who Bobo Bobo
- 52:17Speaker 2: is and he brings up he says, no, it's Shareff
- 52:19Speaker 2: flow boy. She never should have canceled that show. Then
- 52:21Speaker 2: they addressed the plans for his birthday have begun, and
- 52:23Speaker 2: we get one of the most iconic visuals of all time.
- 52:26Speaker 1: And another topic, the preparations for your birthday have begun.
- 52:29Speaker 1: They won't get what they really want. No one does, people,
- 52:36Speaker 1: mister Smithers.
- 52:41Speaker 2: Mister Burn's coming out of the cake was always one
- 52:43Speaker 2: of the more surreal moments for me when I was
- 52:45Speaker 2: watching this as a kid. But I've always just loved
- 52:47Speaker 2: how into it Burns was in Spinther's dream, like he
- 52:50Speaker 2: wants to be bursting out of that cake. This is
- 52:52Speaker 2: this is a present he's giving to him. Well you
- 52:54Speaker 2: know what this is a shout out to as well. Well,
- 52:55Speaker 2: it's there Marilyn Happy birthday to JFK.
- 52:58Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, imagine imagine being Jackie on Nassus watching that ship.
- 53:03Speaker 4: I mean, Jackie watching Marilyn monroj just come up and
- 53:06Speaker 4: do the fucking sexiest rendition, had your birthday to your
- 53:09Speaker 4: husband the president.
- 53:11Speaker 3: There's also a Marilyn Monroe reference later on when they
- 53:14Speaker 3: have the slideshow of what Monty's Yeah a seven year
- 53:17Speaker 3: rich tress.
- 53:17Speaker 4: Blowing up here.
- 53:18Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, but it's hilarious stuff and just yeah, and
- 53:21Speaker 2: again though, I think the ice is going to cake
- 53:23Speaker 2: for me for that whole bit is as you're saying earlier,
- 53:25Speaker 2: Smithers when he gets bumped behind my burns, it's Smithers satisfying,
- 53:31Speaker 2: grown of this dream so great. But I just love
- 53:35Speaker 2: how again, how heavy they leaned into Smith's sexuality back then,
- 53:40Speaker 2: and they never they did At times, it was very
- 53:42Speaker 2: rarely used as the punchline. It was just, you know,
- 53:45Speaker 2: he loves his boss.
- 53:47Speaker 4: And if they were gay gags, I mean they weren't
- 53:49Speaker 4: necessarily Yeah, yeah, they weren't poking fun at Smithers.
- 53:53Speaker 2: You're right.
- 53:54Speaker 4: I mean, for me, the the apex of that is women.
- 53:59Speaker 2: Yeah, women. Would you think.
- 54:02Speaker 3: I was thinking exactly the same thing. And I think
- 54:04Speaker 3: the great thing is that it also makes everything that
- 54:07Speaker 3: Smithers does plausible because you would go, who would put
- 54:10Speaker 3: up with this?
- 54:11Speaker 2: Absolutely? Yeah?
- 54:12Speaker 4: Only only a man in love?
- 54:14Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. There was always a bit in Malibu Stacey
- 54:16Speaker 2: as well, where it's like, hell, Loo, Smith, this, you're
- 54:17Speaker 2: quite good at turning me on. And he says he
- 54:20Speaker 2: turns to Lisa, who's baffled by what she's just saying.
- 54:22Speaker 2: He goes, you probably should ignore that. I think it's
- 54:23Speaker 2: a keep watching Symtos. You're like, yeah, I think I
- 54:25Speaker 2: might just ignore that too. Right now, what's going on?
- 54:26Speaker 2: I don't really want to know, But he says he's
- 54:30Speaker 2: going to planning his birthday party. Homer meanwhile, was having
- 54:32Speaker 2: a genuine nightmare about the cancelation of Sheriff Lobo, which
- 54:35Speaker 2: I thought was a great callback lovely segue. Yeah. It
- 54:38Speaker 2: wakes up to find out it's mister Burns's birthday, which
- 54:41Speaker 2: means all these employees have to do a terrible job
- 54:43Speaker 2: at his party. He always gets the bad jobs. He's
- 54:45Speaker 2: the pinada at a previous party, holding the holding pinyard.
- 54:48Speaker 2: Then we're at work and Burns and Smith as they
- 54:50Speaker 2: see everyone laughing at the cave and blobber Smithers calls
- 54:53Speaker 2: him Homer because he's got the coat hanger still in
- 54:55Speaker 2: his clothes. They're stabbing him really, and Burns wanting to
- 54:58Speaker 2: perform comedy at his party to harness his fractured take
- 55:02Speaker 2: on modern life, and Smith says, yeah, I'm going to
- 55:04Speaker 2: get him prepared for some symbadasque material. What's your thoughts
- 55:07Speaker 2: on Sinbad the comedian? I remember hear from Jingle All
- 55:10Speaker 2: the Way.
- 55:11Speaker 3: That's a very early nineties reference Sinbad. And I don't
- 55:14Speaker 3: know what the American point of view, because they were
- 55:17Speaker 3: all they were all comedians or thereabouts in the writers.
- 55:20Speaker 3: Whether that was like a you know, having a little
- 55:23Speaker 3: big at Sinbad in Dad, I don't.
- 55:24Speaker 2: Know, but I think I think it's meant to be.
- 55:27Speaker 2: Have you ever heard of them? Maybe you didn't live
- 55:29Speaker 2: through this. There's the mandala effect, right. Kids in the
- 55:32Speaker 2: nineties have this memory. And I have like vivid memories
- 55:35Speaker 2: of seeing the cover and the ad that never existed
- 55:39Speaker 2: of a Sinbad movie of him as a genie, but
- 55:43Speaker 2: it was played by Simbad. I have so many memories
- 55:46Speaker 2: of this. It never happened. There's a movie called Shazam
- 55:48Speaker 2: with Shaquille O'Neil, and apparently for some reason, everyone kids
- 55:52Speaker 2: kid just crossed. They heard the words the name Simbad
- 55:55Speaker 2: and just assumed it was him. It's so bizarre. It's
- 55:57Speaker 2: like there's his entire it's like thesis written on this
- 55:59Speaker 2: thing that kids of the nineties think that Sinbad was
- 56:01Speaker 2: in a film where he was a genie from a
- 56:03Speaker 2: magic lamp. Never happened.
- 56:04Speaker 3: Yeah, was it? What is it that Sinbad? We would
- 56:06Speaker 3: have known in Australia? What did he do?
- 56:08Speaker 2: Or jingle all the jingle all the way for me
- 56:10Speaker 2: as a kid.
- 56:11Speaker 4: Yeah, that's the thing. I mean, if you asked me
- 56:12Speaker 4: to do a Sindbad bit, let's look of Simbad film? Yeah, well,
- 56:17Speaker 4: he was in a film with a film Hartman called
- 56:18Speaker 4: House Guest.
- 56:19Speaker 2: Okay, I don't know that one. Do you know that
- 56:21Speaker 2: one day?
- 56:22Speaker 3: No, I'm trying to think. I swear it was a
- 56:24Speaker 3: TV thing that Simbad was in in the nineties, but
- 56:26Speaker 3: I don't was it just.
- 56:27Speaker 4: Called the Sinbad Show?
- 56:28Speaker 2: Apparently it was a voice of character in the movie Planes.
- 56:31Speaker 3: I mean, he did have the hoopy ear rings though,
- 56:32Speaker 3: I remember that Shaquille O'Neil had in his first few years
- 56:35Speaker 3: were the same thing, the big gold earrings and you're right,
- 56:37Speaker 3: like a best Yeah, that's It's a funny Dano that
- 56:40Speaker 3: you said that, because I do agree that I felt
- 56:42Speaker 3: like I'd seen him as a genie and I could
- 56:44Speaker 3: not tell you why it never happened.
- 56:46Speaker 2: It's so weird. Yeah. Did you have any comedians that
- 56:48Speaker 2: you did enjoy growing up before you decided to comedy?
- 56:51Speaker 2: Is my thing? Who were the comedians that you enjoyed
- 56:52Speaker 2: as a kid.
- 56:53Speaker 3: I mean, I do hope to say this in it
- 56:55Speaker 3: has mat as well with Bill Cosby. I mean it.
- 56:57Speaker 2: Was he was. He was huge star.
- 56:59Speaker 3: Yeah, himself is an amazing piece of I mean, this
- 57:02Speaker 3: is that argument of the artist and the art, but
- 57:05Speaker 3: oh yeah, absolutely himself is an incredible stand up show.
- 57:09Speaker 3: That was I think one of the first I've ever seen.
- 57:11Speaker 3: Billy Conley was a huge influence here in Australia. I
- 57:14Speaker 3: mean he was the first person I've ever seen that swore.
- 57:16Speaker 3: My parents are like, nah, that's pretty good.
- 57:19Speaker 2: He was really big, wasn't he in Australia? Connolly?
- 57:21Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, because remember he would also do a lot
- 57:23Speaker 3: of those he'd travel around Australia. He'd be on a
- 57:25Speaker 3: giant trike, like this motorcycle with two wheels at the back,
- 57:30Speaker 3: and then he would just travel to all these little
- 57:32Speaker 3: players in Australia. It was the first one to do
- 57:34Speaker 3: it in Australia in the eighties and nineties. That was huge.
- 57:37Speaker 3: We never got people from overseas. I mean, people have
- 57:39Speaker 3: to understand. When we have our TV awards, the logis
- 57:42Speaker 3: it would be, you know, the eighth cast member from
- 57:46Speaker 3: a really shit show that would come over and do
- 57:49Speaker 3: a guest appearance and we'd all be losing our minds.
- 57:52Speaker 4: But even before that, though, Dave, I mean, going back
- 57:55Speaker 4: to the seventies, the logans attracted some huge names.
- 57:58Speaker 2: It was wild.
- 57:59Speaker 4: I mean it was I think there was a stage
- 58:00Speaker 4: where John Wayne came over. It was like presenting the
- 58:03Speaker 4: big award at the end. I mean, and this is
- 58:05Speaker 4: when you know John Wayne was still John Wayne.
- 58:08Speaker 2: We've got one star and we put all the budget
- 58:10Speaker 2: into that, absolutely all.
- 58:11Speaker 4: Muhammad Ali came over only to get you know, inavertently
- 58:14Speaker 4: racially assaulted by Burton. Yes, rest in peace, Burton.
- 58:18Speaker 2: But it's funny how there's because we grew up on
- 58:20Speaker 2: those classic moments from Australian television shows like Top twenty
- 58:24Speaker 2: and stuff like that, and I feel like we always
- 58:26Speaker 2: have like the Burton Newton and Muhammed Ali moment. There's
- 58:28Speaker 2: always key moments like the Graham Kennedy saying fuck on
- 58:32Speaker 2: TV and that kind of thing that we all remember
- 58:34Speaker 2: because they just repeated those. We've got like twenty classic
- 58:36Speaker 2: moments of Australian taligent over like thirty years.
- 58:39Speaker 4: But you're also right, David that, yeah, as the eighties progressed,
- 58:42Speaker 4: certainly end of the night is like, yeah, we're we're
- 58:45Speaker 4: not getting Jennifer Anderson, We'll get Matt LeBlanc. He can
- 58:48Speaker 4: come over and present the Gold LOGI some would argue better.
- 58:51Speaker 3: I think I remembered Matt LeBlanc being on the logis
- 58:54Speaker 3: and kind of giving this look of like, what what's happened?
- 58:57Speaker 3: I'm gonna have to follow?
- 58:58Speaker 2: Where am I?
- 58:58Speaker 4: By the end, no one's really been briefed about you know,
- 59:01Speaker 4: this is Australian Televisions night, and I was like, what
- 59:03Speaker 4: the fuck am I doing here?
- 59:08Speaker 2: And it's never really changed, has it. Legies are still
- 59:10Speaker 2: the logies like it's just.
- 59:12Speaker 4: Oh yeah, but I mean, who's the international person they
- 59:14Speaker 4: bring out these.
- 59:15Speaker 2: They like to think it's prestigious. I guess at least
- 59:18Speaker 2: we have some pretty big names coming from a shot
- 59:19Speaker 2: that the Hemsworths and who else we got from Australia. Oh,
- 59:22Speaker 2: Margaret Robbie, she's another star.
- 59:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 59:24Speaker 4: Do you attend Day? Did you attend the Logans in
- 59:26Speaker 4: in stage?
- 59:27Speaker 3: I haven't. Actually, it's been the one thing. And mind
- 59:29Speaker 3: you again, having done some corporates now, different awards in
- 59:34Speaker 3: different sectors, I'm like, oh, I think I'm good because
- 59:36Speaker 3: it is all the ward nights. I find it just
- 59:39Speaker 3: drag on and it's I've been strangely to some LOGI
- 59:41Speaker 3: after parties because I never went to the Logis. But
- 59:44Speaker 3: then when it was in Melbourne, people be like, just
- 59:46Speaker 3: come the after party. I was like, yeah, okay, they'd
- 59:47Speaker 3: be sick. So there's a bit of that, and I
- 59:51Speaker 3: mean I think also now, I mean, Danny, you just
- 59:54Speaker 3: pointed out how we've got a lot of Australians over
- 59:56Speaker 3: in America and they're making a fair dint. It's it's
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: so much further away back then, like even you're talking
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: about the Simpsons in ninety three, like America felt like
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: it was it was a world away, like it's not
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: too It wouldn't be unusual for, you know, one of
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: my kids mates to go over to America and come
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: back on holiday just randomly. When back then you're like
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: if anyone hit it over, like are you kidding me?
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: Walls at like like it would must have been mass a.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: Friends of mine would go to America like on school
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: holidays and I go, I saw the New Details movie
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: six months before it. Then we come out here and
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: you're like, fuck, wow, how is this happening?
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: Well that was exactly right, wasn't it was? You would
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: get things. I mean, you talk about these Simpsons series,
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: I'm sure they would have aired two years after they
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: Woh yeah.
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: Well I think by the end we were about six
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: to eight months behind. I remember when the who Shot
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: Mister Burns thing? I always remember this a guy in
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: Australian radio. I can't I don't know who his name was,
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: but he got fired because what he did was he
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: found out who shot mister Burns because it was delayed
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: here in Australia and I were about to air the
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: premiere of season seven, which is part two of Who
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: Shot Mister Burns? Where it was like who done? Can
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: you believe it. And this is before the Internet, so
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: you know, most people didn't know, right, and we spent
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: all summer, work in winter or whatever was trying to
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: work out who did it. And it's sort of like
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: this Lackey guy on the radio was like it was
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: a baby and you can just and it's like everyone's like,
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: what the fuck did you just do? Yeah?
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: Yeah, because you could did it because it wasn't any Internet.
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: The only experience I've ever had of that was Master
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: Sheef Australia, and I don't it still the case, but
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: it's pretty big in South Africa. And I did gigs
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: in like twenty ten in South Africa and they were
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: up to about season three of Master Chef like it was,
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: they were like six years behind. I'd never seen it before, and.
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: So Master Chef Australia is big over there.
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: It's big over there. And then I'm doing these gigs
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: and it was weird because I did a show and
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: again there's a lineup gigs and I was on with
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: some pretty heaby it is, to be honest in hindsight,
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: I was on gigs with like Trevor Noah and Theo
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: Vaughn and these. It was crazy and we're doing this
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: gig and Australia had just played South Africa in a
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: rugby union international, which, as we know from Geelong, we
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: don't care about rugby, but South Amparica's love rugby, and
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: Australia did beat South Africa. And then there's a gig
- 1:02:04Speaker 3: on that night and when I walked on stage, everyone
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: started barring because you know the jokes that people say
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: about New Zealanders like the fuck she well, they have
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: the same jokes about us, like it just seems to
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: pass around the southern hemispy.
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: And so I'm on stage they also barring like sheep,
- 1:02:20Speaker 3: and I'm like, what's going on? And then I actually
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: talk to the audience and they go, yeah, you know,
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: you guys are sleeping with sheep and I was like okay,
- 1:02:26Speaker 3: right yah. And then they're like, I'm like, are you
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: annoyed about the rugby gaming?
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: Like yeah, whatever?
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: Was like I said, I don't even follow it, I
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: don't even care, and they were all like boom boo,
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: and I said, RIGHTO, I'm going to let you all
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: know who won Season three of Marster Chef and then.
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: We'll be good. We had Reyo Leary on the show
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: a few weeks back, and he were saying that when
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: he goes to Scotland he has to kind of sort
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: of just completely change his routine to an extent, because
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: a lot of his jokes land in Australia, but over
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: there they've got no idea what he's talking about. Do
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: you find that when you go do gigs overseas you
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: got to sort of change You might say a similar joke,
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: but you sort of tweak the pun flying to an extent.
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: I didn't. I didn't really found it too bad. I mean,
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: I again, I haven't been internationally for a while now.
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: I don't find it it was too much of a trouble.
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: I mean, obviously you take references out. There's no point
- 1:03:15Speaker 3: in pointing out you know, it was crossing the Yarra
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: River and they're like, well, yeah, I don't know what
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: that means. But I fainly. The funny thing is I
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: find posting clips online is funny because it's so many
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: times it is Americans, and I now Americans listen to
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: these podcasts where there's things like you'll do the British
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: spelling of something and people go, that's not real, and
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: you're like it is. It's another way of spelling it,
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: like it's just and there might be a turn of
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: phrase that people go, I even know what he's trying
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: to say, and you're like, I don't know, just look
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: it up. It's okay. Like English language does change slightly
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: in other places.
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: It's like how they say caramel instead of caramel, Like,
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: what are we doing?
- 1:03:52Speaker 3: Yeah, aluminum illumine.
- 1:03:54Speaker 4: What I always say about Americans is they took the
- 1:03:57Speaker 4: A out of caramel and they put it in paraplegic,
- 1:03:59Speaker 4: because it's like, I don't know how many Americans I've
- 1:04:03Speaker 4: heard use the term paraplegic, so even doing it.
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: Yeah, sorry, what yeah, yeah, I just do find it
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: quite just funny. I'm like, yeah, guys, like things have
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: things can be different overseas. It's okay.
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: But speaking speaking of writing comedy there, so Hom's right
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: in the roast here, Marge's isn't sure about whether this
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: is a good idea, and Lisa that I could work
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: if you treat this roast properly, and Homer brings up
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: the fact that he's got a killer send off an
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: impression of mister Burns where he draws his face in
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: his ars and turns around, drops his pants. Now, I'm
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: not too sure about this. The newspaper here burns his birthday,
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: his birthday has arrived, credits Long Life to Satan from
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: a billion dollars, and then Homer is greating. I love here.
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: So Home is getting ready. He's right into this. He's
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: taken it. He's taken a whole new moniker. He's got
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: the wet hair, he's holding a golf club, he's got
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: the jacket on. He's ready to go, and I love it.
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: So he mentions incontinent, and Lisa's like, do you even
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: know what it means? Lisa, don't spoil my fun Like
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: the joke. The joke works, but he has no idea
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: why it's funny. I just love the idea that, in
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: a scene that they've probably deleted, Home is watching old
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: roasts and just getting key buzzwords to say during his routine.
- 1:05:05Speaker 4: Well, that's the thing. I mean, I'm guessing that the
- 1:05:07Speaker 4: sports jacket and the golf club is probably a shatter
- 1:05:10Speaker 4: to someone like Bob Hope.
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: Yeah, Bobs, yeah, And I mean.
- 1:05:13Speaker 4: There are so many sort of quote unquote boom of
- 1:05:16Speaker 4: references throughout this episode that yeah, yeah, even I'm going
- 1:05:21Speaker 4: to count you in this day. But as young men,
- 1:05:23Speaker 4: you and I were watching this going not one hundred
- 1:05:26Speaker 4: percent sure I get exactly what they mean here, but yeah,
- 1:05:29Speaker 4: if you're in the waiver, in the groove, you'll probably
- 1:05:32Speaker 4: will find some way to look it up or I mean,
- 1:05:35Speaker 4: one thing I've always said about the sense is if
- 1:05:37Speaker 4: you're watching it with someone who knows a little bit
- 1:05:39Speaker 4: more than you do, they kind of turned into comic
- 1:05:42Speaker 4: book guy or a good version of comic book guys,
- 1:05:43Speaker 4: like you know what, you know what that actually means?
- 1:05:46Speaker 4: You know, you knew what they were referring to there.
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: That's me and watching the film with my wife, I
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: feel like I have to stop it. She's after watch
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: she goes, I know you know what it means. I
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: don't care, Yeah exactly.
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: I mean I do love in that scene where bad
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: when he goes in Kartna too rich.
- 1:06:04Speaker 4: Well, that's great as well that the Simpsons men that
- 1:06:07Speaker 4: just have this terrible low brows sense of humor just
- 1:06:09Speaker 4: tickled by this shit ever and the women is going,
- 1:06:12Speaker 4: oh god, but.
- 1:06:13Speaker 3: Also too rich is like something you would say in
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: the fifties, like like.
- 1:06:17Speaker 4: Too rich, well, I want to I actually want to
- 1:06:22Speaker 4: We'll get to it when we get to it. But yeah,
- 1:06:23Speaker 4: there's a phrase that Bart uses a little later on.
- 1:06:27Speaker 4: I'm like, what is this? What is it? Why do this?
- 1:06:30Speaker 4: Or we'll get to it.
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: We'll get to it. Okay, Yeah, marchas Key's stay tuned.
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: March just stopped being rude. Hama says, the roasts and
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: American tradition, what gives us the freedom to criticize our
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: social betters. And then he goes outside and says, Flanner
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: smells up and you are. Then everyone's entering Burns's party.
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: We've got Mayor quimby Reagan Nixon. Bush tries to enter,
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: but no one term is so he gets sent to
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: the wolves with Jimmy Carter. Jimmy Carter. Jimmy Carter, Yes,
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: who does not? Bush does not want to be friends
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: with It's a good yogurt place.
- 1:06:58Speaker 3: Do you want to tell me for a good yoga place?
- 1:06:59Speaker 3: Get it leave for me your loser.
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: Yes. Then he introduces this is the other bit about
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: the remote bit that I love the fact that Smithers
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: has booked them but has no idea who they are.
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: Several fine young men who I'm sure are going to
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: go far and just blow the roof off the joint.
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: It's actually a fucking great rendition of Happy Birthday? Am
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: I right?
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: Oh yeah, well it's I mean that is the Ramones.
- 1:07:22Speaker 3: What's their famous song? Yeah, it is great. It is
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: that tune, Yeah, blisskip pop? Is that the one screen pop?
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's very I mean many of the remote
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: songs sound the same. They sound very similar. But yeah,
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: just that that intro.
- 1:07:37Speaker 4: Yeah, but anytime they kick one two three bolt, I'm
- 1:07:40Speaker 4: sorry that love it, love it.
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: Just got your best, even kick before the.
- 1:07:46Speaker 4: One two three, I just like to say the gig sucks.
- 1:07:53Speaker 4: I'm showing my pop ignorance here.
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: By the way, I.
- 1:07:57Speaker 4: Tend to have blind spots. For a very long time,
- 1:07:59Speaker 4: I didn't really as the Ramones were actually not brothers.
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: I was like, oh, well, it's like the one of
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: the odds.
- 1:08:06Speaker 4: The Ramone family got together and you know, they formed
- 1:08:08Speaker 4: a rock and roll band. Good for them, and they
- 1:08:10Speaker 4: were oh wait no, they're all taken on stage.
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: Then it's just a punk version of the Partridges, like
- 1:08:14Speaker 3: the Parents. The jacket, you'll wear it and you'll like.
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: But yeah, just the sensational from beginning to end and
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: Ben's heating on all of these presents. We mentioned the
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: Australia with the candles before. I have some sad news
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: to report.
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: A small poppy, not unlike Lassie, was just run over
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: in the parking lot. And now it's time for the
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: comedy stylings of Homer Simpson. Are you ready to laugh?
- 1:08:42Speaker 4: The poor dog?
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: I said, why are you ready to laugh?
- 1:08:48Speaker 3: Why?
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: At you awful man? I think Homer started with are
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: you ready to laugh? Is just like.
- 1:08:56Speaker 4: Something I really did though, was just when Smith this
- 1:09:00Speaker 4: is talking comedy, He's really using some of the cliches.
- 1:09:02Speaker 4: I think we're probably big throughout the eighties and nineties,
- 1:09:05Speaker 4: but fracture takes on modern life is wonderful. But then, yeah,
- 1:09:10Speaker 4: please enjoy the comedy stylings of Yeah, of momus. It's
- 1:09:13Speaker 4: like imagining introduced with like the day the comedy stylings
- 1:09:17Speaker 4: of Dave Thornton.
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: Everybody, are there are there things that comedians just should
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: not start a gig with? For example, are you ready
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: to laugh? Yes?
- 1:09:25Speaker 3: Are you ready to laugh? I mean that is a
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: very old trope. I think that they're also being up,
- 1:09:30Speaker 3: but yeah, are you ready to laugh? Like like the
- 1:09:33Speaker 3: expectation because We always say expectation is the worst for
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: stand up comedy. Don't ever say, you know, this is
- 1:09:38Speaker 3: the greatest stand up comedian you've ever seen. No doubt
- 1:09:41Speaker 3: this guy. Like it's like, no, nah, don't set that expectations.
- 1:09:44Speaker 3: People go okay, radio, So this is the best comedian,
- 1:09:48Speaker 3: is it. Let's see how this goes and we'll see
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: here in Australia and so.
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: Yeah, are you reading the tap poppy central of the world?
- 1:09:55Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, What does that woman say in the crowd?
- 1:09:58Speaker 3: You guys quiet?
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: You man.
- 1:10:06Speaker 4: At Homer desperately trying to think on his feet, just
- 1:10:09Speaker 4: how can I save the set?
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: But speaking of hack comedians, we're talking about South Park earlier. Jimmy,
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: what a wonderful audience.
- 1:10:17Speaker 4: I was got a name check earlier because I thought
- 1:10:18Speaker 4: I was trying I was trying to do a comic
- 1:10:20Speaker 4: book impersonation. It sounds a lot more like Jimmy. You
- 1:10:23Speaker 4: know what it actually mean when they see this.
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: Are you a fan of South Park? Dave?
- 1:10:28Speaker 3: I do. I'm not avid, Like I don't watch it consistently,
- 1:10:32Speaker 3: but yeah, yeah, it's great.
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: If you're going to go back and watch anybody, it's Jimmy.
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: Watch Jimmy, Oh yeah, you guys are really agree, you're
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: really a great what agreed?
- 1:10:44Speaker 4: We were sitting their invitation for you to be on
- 1:10:46Speaker 4: our south Back podcast, by the way.
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: But Homer's, as he said here, you know, it's a
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: tough audience. So he goes to the Big Guns where
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: he just drops his pants and am mister Burns, Dam damn.
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: Mister Ben's not a fan, so he says, destroy him.
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: Party is I We get the shot of them just
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: beating the shit out of everybody who's at the party.
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: Homer has a bump where did I lose him? And
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: then he promises to never wiggle his ass in public again,
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: But Bart says, don't worry, please, don't deny the world.
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: I fact can and it will be ready for someone's
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: birthday party. Then Bart is going through. Burns is going
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: through his collection here, and despite having as you were
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: saying earlier, Arthur's Excalibar, the only existing NEWD photo of
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: Mark Twain and the initial early draft of the Constitution
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: with the word suckers, he just wants his bear Bobo.
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: He tries to deny it, but then this is where
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: we get the first sort of real open you don't
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: really get emotional burns all that often in the earlier seasons,
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: But I loved Harry Sheer is acting here of just
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: oh God, how I want my bear? He just really
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: just wants this stuff Teddy, because this episode, for all
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: the laughs, does have a genuine emotional.
- 1:11:45Speaker 4: Story through it, an emotional underpinning.
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: We get Bobo's journey here, so he arrived in New
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: York nine twenty seven, Lindy takes on the spirit of
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: Saint Louis, goes to Paris, throws the bear.
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: To Hitler and get some griet and he got to
- 1:11:57Speaker 4: Linda at the.
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: End of the World War. He blames the the end
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: of the war on Bobo, so he throws and away
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: ends back up at the North Pole nineteen to fifty seven.
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: He gets frozen and then collected for ice for the
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: QUICKI March, which we've already touched on, which is just hilarious.
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: How when he meant that they lose four three lost
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: four four good men, Yeah you got chose more than
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: a dollar a bag. But then arrives to get some
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: ice here and he says it's ahead in this one.
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: It's chock full of heady goodness. I'm always a big
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: fan of a poo when he tries to improvise on
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: his feet, you know, when he's selling a dodgy product.
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: You know, this one's chock full of heady goodness. What's
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: your thoughts on the whole of Pooh situation A poo
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: no longer being on the Simpsons.
- 1:12:32Speaker 3: Yeah, it's funny, isn't it, Because you spoke earlier just
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: about you know, chokes that don't work anymore, like in
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: Demolition Man. Yeah, And it was funny when I started
- 1:12:42Speaker 3: playing the episodes to the kids, and it was a
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: scene from Home of the Heretic where he a Poo,
- 1:12:50Speaker 3: has to go help out with a fire and he
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: says to the Jimbo and the boys he goes, don't
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: steal anything, and they're like, oh, we won't. And then
- 1:12:57Speaker 3: he grabs this child from behind the counter and says
- 1:13:00Speaker 3: a little jump stop if you can look after the
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: store when I'm gone, And the kids have something waiting
- 1:13:06Speaker 3: for this moment, and Cox a double loaded rifle and
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: the guys are shocked, and I to my kids did
- 1:13:14Speaker 3: the Appoo thing, you know, going and quoting them, and
- 1:13:18Speaker 3: they lost their minds. They're like, this is the greatest
- 1:13:20Speaker 3: and wanting me to do it, and then we were
- 1:13:22Speaker 3: out at a cafe and they're like.
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: Do it, Dad? Do the boys? Dad?
- 1:13:27Speaker 3: Absolutely not? And I then stupidly like, then I had
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: to explain the situation of why not?
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: And it is.
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: It's a tough one, isn't it, because I can understand
- 1:13:36Speaker 3: where people coming from. But I know you've had some
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: of the people involved in the show before about it,
- 1:13:42Speaker 3: but they said it wasn't us lampooning him necessarily, it
- 1:13:45Speaker 3: was you know, Pooh is a nice character. We did
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: it with love, but I guess it was Hanka's area.
- 1:13:50Speaker 3: Is that right who voiced Yeah? And so I don't know,
- 1:13:54Speaker 3: as a straight white dude, I don't think I've got
- 1:13:56Speaker 3: to solve this bubble?
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: What's that learn from that South poat? We're staying out
- 1:13:58Speaker 4: of this one.
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: Yeah, gotta touch this one of a ten foot pole.
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: But yeah, so Bart finds it, thinks it's disease, so
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: he gives it to Maggie and this is where Maggie
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: gets her hands on Bobo the bear. We get the
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: cool shot of goes to the tag first of all
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: SS one hundred percent cotton. Then it's bobo name written
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: on the.
- 1:14:11Speaker 4: Tag, but instantly imprints I just love at first sight.
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: Yeah. Smithers then enters as a furry dressed as Bobo
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: the Bear tells him to tug at my fur, and
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: Burns is not having none of it. He tells Smithers
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: to go find his teddy. He says, leave the costume.
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: The Smithers is putting the face and all the milk
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: cartons we touched on earlier as well, and Homer's watching
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: the news report here about Bobo the Bear. I think
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: this scene was just purely there to explain why can't
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: Homer just see that the bear is the Actually he's
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: such an oblivious idiot, like the Brockman saying might be
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: held up, I love one right in front of your
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: face right now, and he's like, moldy old, I'm gonna
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: get something to eat. Then we have Frank with the
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: robot bear, who just ends up attacking Burns. Doesn't go well.
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: Then the scene where Homer finally realizes that they have Bobo.
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: Now is this music? Is this from a movie? This?
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: This feels like a movie parody with the music playing
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: and the old shot.
- 1:14:56Speaker 4: And I was always curious about this, and my curiosity
- 1:14:59Speaker 4: was not satisfied. Rewatching it for this episode, I was like, Yeah,
- 1:15:02Speaker 4: it's this.
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: You through the fish tank and the music's playing and the.
- 1:15:06Speaker 4: Music feels like Enya or something like that.
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: It feels like it feels like it's meant to be something.
- 1:15:11Speaker 4: It's such a cinematic type of sequence. Yeah that you think, oh,
- 1:15:15Speaker 4: they've got to be referencing something here, but goodness only
- 1:15:17Speaker 4: knows what now.
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: Guys, I hope you're enjoyed this week's show. Remember, if

- 1:15:51Speaker 3: Well, Burns isn't getting this back? Cheep. I can tell
- 1:15:53Speaker 3: you that he's gonna have to give me my own
- 1:15:57Speaker 3: recording studio, Petty cheez because Je Burn, you're drilling out
- 1:16:07Speaker 3: the making out.
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: Can you do the big maxon? Did you ever used
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: to do it when you were a kid. My mom
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: says to me that, I know, maybe it was when
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: you were younger. If you used to go to mc
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: donald's and you could say it under like three seconds
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: or something, they'd give you a free big Mac. Is
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: that true?
- 1:16:19Speaker 4: Ah, that was a legend. Absolutely, yeah, Yeah, that was
- 1:16:22Speaker 4: it too well.
- 1:16:22Speaker 3: Beat patty special sauce that it's us became super.
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: It sounds so stupid and trying to explain this to
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: anyone under the age of like twenty five, like, what
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: the fuck are you talking about?
- 1:16:36Speaker 3: Yeah, but again, we all had the same touchdown, so
- 1:16:39Speaker 3: we all did it.
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: But don't you feel like McDonald's in particular, that really
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: just suck the fun out of the fast food franchises.
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: I was a kid going to McDonald's feel like you're
- 1:16:48Speaker 2: going to a fucking play center. The seats were shaped
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: like cheeseburgers. You had run on McDonald runn around the joint,
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: you had birthday parties, now you go to McDonalds and
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: it feels like you're fucking entering an Ikea store.
- 1:16:58Speaker 3: Yes, there was one in Belmont that really used to
- 1:17:03Speaker 3: be It was funny because it had it's not a
- 1:17:06Speaker 3: merry go round, but it's one of those. It was
- 1:17:08Speaker 3: weird because you would one of those I don't know
- 1:17:10Speaker 3: what you would call them. You sit in it and
- 1:17:12Speaker 3: then you toil it. You have a wheel in the
- 1:17:14Speaker 3: middle and you would just start toirling yourselves and it
- 1:17:16Speaker 3: was like a little canister you sat inside this thing.
- 1:17:19Speaker 3: But it was funny. After you bea at a birthday party,
- 1:17:21Speaker 3: you would have had all this fried food and then
- 1:17:23Speaker 3: ice cream cake and then everyone's like, let's go on that.
- 1:17:25Speaker 3: And the amount of kids that yacked out the side
- 1:17:27Speaker 3: of that it was crazy.
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: Do you remember when the birthday parties to at macas
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: when they'd take the kids on a tour of the
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: kitchen and you just you get like ten kids just
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: walking around the kitchen while these teenagers are making cheeseburgers.
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: Did you ever have a McDonald's birthday party?
- 1:17:40Speaker 3: No, I did have a McDonald's party. You don't remember
- 1:17:42Speaker 3: the tours? I think, yeah, I don't remember any of that.
- 1:17:45Speaker 3: I mean, you're right, it's not the journey it used
- 1:17:47Speaker 3: to be. And I guess maybe it was built as
- 1:17:49Speaker 3: a bit of a special treat where now it's probably
- 1:17:52Speaker 3: just for hungover people.
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: Now McDonald's is cheaping and going to the supermarket and
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: buying your own food. So yeah, that is it.
- 1:18:00Speaker 4: I don't know you go in there, I mean, if
- 1:18:01Speaker 4: you if you're not doing the drive through, I mean,
- 1:18:04Speaker 4: if you actually go in. It sounds like it sounds
- 1:18:07Speaker 4: like the end scene from Terminator where she goes into
- 1:18:10Speaker 4: that goes into that factory and you know they turn
- 1:18:12Speaker 4: all the machines on because you can just hear it
- 1:18:14Speaker 4: from the back ground. I don't want this quarterbanda anymore.
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: I know you'll have to auder your food at a screen,
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: even though there's people there. I was like, he's like, no, no,
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: we don't take our orders here, we just give you
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: the food. I'm like, what do you mean I want
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: to I want to tell you what I want.
- 1:18:30Speaker 4: How else am I going to let you know that
- 1:18:32Speaker 4: I don't want pickles in this burger?
- 1:18:34Speaker 3: Yeah? I remember I had that at Subway recently, where
- 1:18:36Speaker 3: I did that and saying, think you just do it
- 1:18:38Speaker 3: on the screen I'm like, you're sitting in front of
- 1:18:40Speaker 3: the food, and I'll point out it's actually easier than
- 1:18:44Speaker 3: looking it up on the screen.
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: It's right there. You're a human being. I can't talk
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: to them old men shaving their fist. That clouds Yeah, exactly,
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: but basically here so least it says we should just
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: give it to him. The boys all laugh at them,
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: because as you would. And then Marsia just we should
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: say the eyeback on. But but has the idea or
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: send it to him because you'll offer more. He thinks
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: the bear's in trouble. And then Marge says, no, I'm
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: sure he'll make a fair off it that will make
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: him double it. I always love it when Marge gets
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: a little moments of greed and things like that. Very
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: unlike Marge. Then Homer shows mister Burns that he has Bobo.
- 1:19:12Speaker 2: He goes to his house and the moment you're touching
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: on earlier and he says, I can't really give you
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: much of a rewards. I'm strapped for cash, and the
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: place falls down and Homer then turns turns down the drink.
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: He turns down his first offer and leaves, and mister
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: burn says it won't take him long to crack, cuts
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: to mister Homer's neck actually cracking, tries to call him back,
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: maybe I can still get that drink, and you found
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: me have to stop him from calling back. Then burns
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: and smithers. They arrive at the home and Homer asks
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: for a million dollars and three Hawaiian islands, the good ones,
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: not the leper one. And unfortunately it's stuck. It's because
- 1:19:45Speaker 2: Maggie doesn't want to let it go. Now we've both
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: touched on how we're parents here right young kids. We
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: love our kids to death. Do anything for him. I'm sorry,
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: but if this bear is the difference between me being
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: a millionaire and not being a millionaire, I'm snatching that
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: bear to that kid's hand. I'm giving it to the
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: billionaire billionaire. What about you?
- 1:20:02Speaker 3: You know this is it's funny. I've never thought about
- 1:20:06Speaker 3: this again until now, Which is I found out my
- 1:20:09Speaker 3: eldest had a bear that she loved, and then my
- 1:20:13Speaker 3: partner said, yeah, she loves that bear. Is that funny?
- 1:20:17Speaker 3: My ex gave it to me and I just never
- 1:20:19Speaker 3: cared for it. And I said, so what she said, Yeah,
- 1:20:21Speaker 3: my ex gave me that bear. I just let it
- 1:20:22Speaker 3: sit there, but it's good that she's playing with it.
- 1:20:24Speaker 3: And I'm like, no, no, no, that's your ex.
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: Why would you tell me this?
- 1:20:28Speaker 3: And then there was here in Australia. It's a show
- 1:20:31Speaker 3: called Hugh's If We Have a Problem, hosted by Dave Hughes.
- 1:20:33Speaker 3: And then the producers are like is there a problem?
- 1:20:36Speaker 3: Like this is a problem, and they're like what would
- 1:20:37Speaker 3: you do? Would you bring a bear in? I'm like absolutely,
- 1:20:39Speaker 3: And I decapitated the bear on the air because I
- 1:20:42Speaker 3: was like, my child does not need this. I don't
- 1:20:45Speaker 3: want to know that my ex, that my partner's ex
- 1:20:47Speaker 3: is giving my child joy. So it's all off. And
- 1:20:52Speaker 3: so I've done this for no money. I mean I
- 1:20:54Speaker 3: just did it on air because it was fun television.
- 1:20:57Speaker 3: So yeah, for a million dollars, absolutely, I would rip
- 1:21:01Speaker 3: that bear out of that child.
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: Can sorry, kid, you'll thank me one day.
- 1:21:06Speaker 3: I mean, I love my kids, but just someone said
- 1:21:07Speaker 3: I'll give you a million dollars one I'm I'll be like,
- 1:21:09Speaker 3: I'm just gonna think about this for a second. Hang
- 1:21:10Speaker 3: on a second, yink?
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: Yeah get the Simpsons created that turn yink? I do? Yeah,
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: I did not realize this, did Dan I use your
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: yo time? Yeah? Yoink is a Simpsons line they made. Yeah,
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: is that.
- 1:21:23Speaker 3: Because I've seen Dan Cason Aller get interviewed where a
- 1:21:27Speaker 3: lot of those voice guys are there fans of old
- 1:21:29Speaker 3: Fordville performers, and they've stolen a lot of those, you know,
- 1:21:34Speaker 3: because yoink does feel like a nineteen twenties frames, you
- 1:21:38Speaker 3: know what I mean, Like someone wud be on stage going,
- 1:21:40Speaker 3: oh hell we ow boys.
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: How are next thing?
- 1:21:42Speaker 4: You know, the big cane comes out and graz around
- 1:21:44Speaker 4: the neck.
- 1:21:44Speaker 2: Yink totally, or something you've seen like a comic book,
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: you know, like a batmanlink.
- 1:21:49Speaker 3: Yes, the old Batman's here. Yeah, that's true.
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: But this is where they say we don't need your money.
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: He leaves you made a terrible mistake and then smashes
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: through the window in his car. He's hit three people
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: when he's got no assurance. Then Burns and Smith. This
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: is the moment you're talking on earlier, where they try
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: sneaking onto the roof. They gas out Flanders and then
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: they get stuck in between. Margin offers some cocoa with
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: some cocoa, yes, then we get the suction cups on
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: the roof. Now your thoughts and the sixty four slices
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: of American Cheese. This is one of the most iconic
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: moments in the history of the Simpsons. I can't quite
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: pinpoint why I found this so funny, but I just
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: think it's just it's so I think it's just got
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: so ludicrous. And the fact that Homer it's the one time,
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: one of the many, one of the few times his
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: love of food has worked in his favor because he
- 1:22:32Speaker 2: is preventing them. He's foiling their plan to get the
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: bear by eating all this cheese all night.
- 1:22:37Speaker 4: Is he doing this deliberately or is he sleepwalking?
- 1:22:39Speaker 2: No sleep? He's sleep eating, sleep eating You think, okay?
- 1:22:42Speaker 3: Just that true? One eating cheese? I think I'm blind.
- 1:22:51Speaker 4: He's got plenty of sees it all the way through, though,
- 1:22:53Speaker 4: Well done.
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: Chexty voice Laces of American Cheese.
- 1:23:00Speaker 3: Four three.
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: Have you been up on night eating cheese?
- 1:23:17Speaker 3: I think I'm blind?
- 1:23:23Speaker 2: Oh what's your idea of a perfect midnight snack?
- 1:23:27Speaker 3: Dave? I don't mind cheese, to be honest. So even
- 1:23:30Speaker 3: when I was a kid, I watched that and thought, yeah,
- 1:23:32Speaker 3: that does make sense.
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: Are you Are you like the thick like proper cheese
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: or you that's like the Kraft singles kind of guy
- 1:23:38Speaker 2: though as.
- 1:23:38Speaker 3: A kid singles. But now, I mean you have cheese
- 1:23:42Speaker 3: platters as an adult to think, oh, yeah, this is
- 1:23:43Speaker 3: adult food. But it's the same concept, is it not?
- 1:23:46Speaker 3: You eating cheese downing in with some wine, going what
- 1:23:52Speaker 3: kind of dreams am I going to have tonight? We'll
- 1:23:54Speaker 3: see how this sorts itself out. But yeah, that's sixty
- 1:23:58Speaker 3: four slaves of American cheese. Is just that lives rend
- 1:24:01Speaker 3: free in my head. I don't know what it is,
- 1:24:02Speaker 3: and I don't even know if sixty four slides of
- 1:24:04Speaker 3: American jews was a thing like they came in packets
- 1:24:06Speaker 3: of sixty four. I don't know, but I found it
- 1:24:09Speaker 3: funny in the moment, and I still find it funny now.
- 1:24:11Speaker 3: And even just when burns and spinners dropping near the
- 1:24:13Speaker 3: suckers good deed.
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: Good deed, they're still blight about it. Then homers at work,
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: random workers are asking they want to see the geeky
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: vote he happens to his children more than money. Then
- 1:24:27Speaker 2: smither says report for much worse duties, which is him
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: being whipped whilst he's making the little donut thing spin around.
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: Homan then offers Maggie a cardboard box. Is one of
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: the scenes that was edited out of TV. And what
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: I liked about this here is Maggie seems like she's
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: keen on the box, so this could potentially could have worked.
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: But Homer, being the that is, he was more interested
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: in the box and he took it away from that,
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: so he followed his own plan here. Then March says
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: they need a new hair dryer, and he says, I
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: think he must he must hate me for not taking
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: that money. She's like, no, I'm proud of you. And
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: we get that. He pulls out the box once again.
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: Then Maggie is watching Barney. I don't know why this
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: sticks with me, but the two two is for That's
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: just something that's just sometimes I'm just walking around, I'll
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: just hear that in my head. I'm like, why why
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: do I hear that in my head? Just that that.
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: But but Barney was such a big part of my child.
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: I was young in the nineties, so we watch a
- 1:25:12Speaker 2: lot of Barney. We rag on marketing people a fair bit.
- 1:25:15Speaker 2: But honestly, they are evil geniuses. I mean, if they
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: came up with two ll be Patty special sauce. There's
- 1:25:19Speaker 2: cheese pickles only in the sesame seed bun, which I
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: can still recide to this day. Or just the simple
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: ship that Barney was saying that nonetheless gets stuck in
- 1:25:27Speaker 2: kids' heads and you know, get some learning arithmetic. It's
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: still pretty wild.
- 1:25:31Speaker 3: Yeah, and I just love that home. It's like no
- 1:25:34Speaker 3: wonder pul like this.
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: Love and this is unfortunate where Burns starts taking over.
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: The TV gets to the Sole mass Transit System aerobic show.
- 1:25:43Speaker 2: I guess it is the bumblebee Man Sole.
- 1:25:46Speaker 4: Mass Transitism you know that is No, I don't know
- 1:25:48Speaker 4: what that is. That's a riff on soul train, you know,
- 1:25:50Speaker 4: soul trainers, right, no trains like it was like the
- 1:25:53Speaker 4: American version of count the Black American version of Countdown. Ah,
- 1:25:57Speaker 4: they have soul music all the time and you would
- 1:25:59Speaker 4: always have people dancing on it. Okay, I think there's
- 1:26:01Speaker 4: old footage.
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: Why would I know this?
- 1:26:04Speaker 4: Why would you not?
- 1:26:05Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's money that the mass transit system would
- 1:26:07Speaker 3: have been the dig like they can't trademark, they can't
- 1:26:10Speaker 3: use soul training. Yeah, Soul mass transit system.
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: There we go.
- 1:26:14Speaker 4: I want to say, there's like footage, like archival footage
- 1:26:17Speaker 4: of like Samuel L. Jackson dancing on Soul Train or something.
- 1:26:20Speaker 4: Oh yeah, okay, yeah, I really don't need to google this,
- 1:26:22Speaker 4: but they're like, yeah, some famous star is on there,
- 1:26:25Speaker 4: just grooving in the background or something.
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: But Burns has taken over all seventy eight channels, and
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: you think he says to Homer, you think they're gonna
- 1:26:32Speaker 2: be fine because you've got beer. Well, unfortunately I've diverted
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: all beer trucks from Springfield. Really good music queue here,
- 1:26:37Speaker 2: and he says that the rest of you beer swelling
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: two jockeys have a problem. Talk to Homer Simpson. At
- 1:26:41Speaker 2: the Barney moment, you're touching on who's at the doors
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: with the gun, which is a lot of confronting visual,
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: but you're just kind of like, oh shit, because you
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: know you're gonna shoot Homer. But then he slams a
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: door on his face. Here's a going to go off.
- 1:26:51Speaker 2: Obviously shot a woman, and that's the end of that.
- 1:26:53Speaker 4: It doesn't really play well at six pm on Channel
- 1:26:55Speaker 4: ten on a week made.
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: The bullies aren't about to beat up Bart at score
- 1:27:00Speaker 2: because Nelson's dad can't get a beer. But that Martin
- 1:27:03Speaker 2: interrupts him with the first snap dragon of the season.
- 1:27:05Speaker 2: That's one of your favorite characters, right.
- 1:27:07Speaker 4: What's not to love about it? He is so happy
- 1:27:10Speaker 4: with the first step rag in the season, little sagean
- 1:27:12Speaker 4: shoes and you know, well, day your shoes will be
- 1:27:14Speaker 4: a spicy treat.
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: Now we get the Smithers Burns sitcom, the classic yes moment.
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: Smithers I'm home?
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: What already?
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: Yes?
- 1:27:31Speaker 4: Is it my imaginationized TV getting worse?
- 1:27:35Speaker 5: Oh?
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: You got.
- 1:27:39Speaker 2: I love this? What do you think this sitcom was called?
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: It's like a regular odd couple sitcom, but they seem
- 1:27:44Speaker 2: like they get along. But what's what's that sitcom called?
- 1:27:47Speaker 4: Do you think it's called burns?
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: Notice burns? Notice?
- 1:27:51Speaker 3: Well, well done that?
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: Or third degree burns? And it Smither's getting hurt in
- 1:27:57Speaker 2: every episode?
- 1:27:58Speaker 3: Yeah a Monty Burns.
- 1:28:00Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:28:01Speaker 4: See, there's why Dave Thornon' Dave Thornton.
- 1:28:05Speaker 3: Workshop got her own little writers through the angry crowd
- 1:28:10Speaker 3: outside home and thinks Look has come to apologize, but
- 1:28:12Speaker 3: they're there to steal the bear.
- 1:28:13Speaker 2: They take it from Maggie and then realize, oh god,
- 1:28:15Speaker 2: what have we done. Maggie's sad, so they go back
- 1:28:17Speaker 2: in and they go to sing songs at the hospital.
- 1:28:18Speaker 4: Give them the word mob a bad name.
- 1:28:20Speaker 2: Yeah, Burns and comes to get spidtherstew beg one more time.
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: He's conceding, look you've won, and Homan then says, look,
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: it's not up to me. It's it's Maggie's bear. It's
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: not up to me to go back to you. So
- 1:28:30Speaker 2: he goes to see Maggie. He approaches the sandpit. Great
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: shot here of we're seeing it from Maggie's point of view.
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: She's looking up at Burns. He's towering over her. So
- 1:28:37Speaker 2: she clings onto the bear and she offers him her dummy,
- 1:28:40Speaker 2: and we hit the paparazzo. Take the photo of him
- 1:28:41Speaker 2: trying the dummy. We'll get to the best pup. Riad's
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: a bit in the second though. He then tries to
- 1:28:45Speaker 2: tricker and tries to snash the bear. He can't beaten
- 1:28:48Speaker 2: by an infant. What could be more humiliating?
- 1:28:50Speaker 3: What a scoop?
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: What a scoop? Damn you, what a scoop. It's just
- 1:28:57Speaker 2: one of the funniest things.
- 1:28:58Speaker 4: I was telling the Dano the start of my writing career.
- 1:29:01Speaker 4: I've worked at Forte down here un forte yes, and yeah,
- 1:29:07Speaker 4: we were just sort of, you know, covering local bands
- 1:29:09Speaker 4: and things like that. But my fellow journals and I
- 1:29:12Speaker 4: went off and say, what a scoops? Hey, we've got
- 1:29:15Speaker 4: an interview with Stephen Cummings.
- 1:29:16Speaker 3: What a school.
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: Do you have any? Do you have any quotes in
- 1:29:22Speaker 2: your life? Dave that you say very often that you
- 1:29:23Speaker 2: sort of you knew that from the Simpsons, but you
- 1:29:25Speaker 2: might have forgotten they came from the Simpsons, and you go, what, oh,
- 1:29:27Speaker 2: that's right, it's from that Simpsons episode. Like what a scoop?
- 1:29:30Speaker 2: For me was a big one. I was like, oh,
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: it's from the Simpsons. Yes.
- 1:29:32Speaker 3: And then also when I'm trying to think the movie,
- 1:29:35Speaker 3: I think it was a Krusty movie or the Ittune
- 1:29:37Speaker 3: Scratchy movie. And they're all waiting to go to the
- 1:29:39Speaker 3: cinema and one of the bridges goes up like it
- 1:29:42Speaker 3: does like London Bridge does when a prison and a
- 1:29:44Speaker 3: guy goes yeah.
- 1:29:48Speaker 2: I say that a lot, ah man, But yeah, So
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: mister Burns gives up and gets a photo taken of
- 1:29:54Speaker 2: and what a scoop? He says to her, Look, don't
- 1:29:56Speaker 2: make the same mistakes I did. He's conceided look you
- 1:29:58Speaker 2: when you can have the bear. And because of this,
- 1:30:00Speaker 2: because he says, look, you can have the bear, just
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: look after it, she says, you know what, you can
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: have your bear back in it for me, Bobo, and
- 1:30:06Speaker 2: he clings on to it, and he says, I'm actually happy.
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: Take note, Smithers, I'll only be good and kind to
- 1:30:10Speaker 2: everyone going forward. I've got no pencil. I'm sure I'll
- 1:30:13Speaker 2: remember it. And as we get the ending, where Homer says,
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: I'm not sure it's a happy you're a sad ending.
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: It's an ending that's enough, and Birds is now in
- 1:30:19Speaker 2: bed with Bobo. He's having a dream here about the
- 1:30:21Speaker 2: future with the future holes. For Bobo, it's a million ad.
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: The monkey's now in charge. Planet of the APPEs reference
- 1:30:26Speaker 2: home is getting whipped. He's now the horse, I guess
- 1:30:29Speaker 2: you could say. And then he says, I know I
- 1:30:31Speaker 2: said this every century, Bobo, but I'll never leave you
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: behind again, runs off as a robot and Smithers is
- 1:30:35Speaker 2: a robot dog. And that's the end of Rosebud.
- 1:30:36Speaker 4: Yeah, with a little bit of Planet of the Apes
- 1:30:38Speaker 4: music over the closing credits.
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: Yeah, just there's so much to one pack there. I
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: think there's jokes we skimmed over, but it was just
- 1:30:44Speaker 2: would have taken too long. But yeah, thank you for
- 1:30:45Speaker 2: choosing Rose by Day. Fantastic episode and it's one that
- 1:30:48Speaker 2: I for some reason never revisit all that often. And
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: then I'll put this on I went. I forgot how
- 1:30:55Speaker 2: incredible this one was because it always gets put into
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: the same sort of category as like mar Address of
- 1:31:00Speaker 2: the Monorail and whatnot when it comes to greatest episodes
- 1:31:02Speaker 2: of all time. But as much as I enjoy Margress
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: of the Monorail, I feel like it's become sort of
- 1:31:07Speaker 2: just the easy go to for what's the best episode
- 1:31:09Speaker 2: of all time? It's funny, but I think this one
- 1:31:12Speaker 2: is a lot funnier than Margress of the Monorail.
- 1:31:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's hilarious. And I also I'm throwing
- 1:31:17Speaker 3: this to you two guys who know a lot more
- 1:31:18Speaker 3: about this than me. Do you think that last scene,
- 1:31:21Speaker 3: I know it's a planet of the apes were referenced,
- 1:31:23Speaker 3: but the head and the jar? Is that where Futurama
- 1:31:26Speaker 3: the first idea. That's the first time I'd seen something
- 1:31:30Speaker 3: like that. I don't feel like a head in a
- 1:31:31Speaker 3: jar is not planning of the apes. I don't think no,
- 1:31:34Speaker 3: not at all.
- 1:31:35Speaker 2: So that was like the gimmick all the celebrities from
- 1:31:38Speaker 2: the from from now in the year three thousand, we're
- 1:31:40Speaker 2: all heads in a jar for Futurama. Not too sure.
- 1:31:43Speaker 2: Maybe they've got that, maybe they like that visual. They
- 1:31:45Speaker 2: could have been it. I thought that could work. Yeah,
- 1:31:47Speaker 2: put that in because I'm essentially later the show set
- 1:31:50Speaker 2: in the year three thousand and how are we going
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: to get current people who are alive now as guest stars.
- 1:31:53Speaker 2: How can we have them alive in the future besides
- 1:31:56Speaker 2: just being the whole classic they've been frozen. I think
- 1:31:58Speaker 2: head in the jar. It's just a funny visual as well.
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: Correct down I will anyway, that is Rosebud. But yeah,
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: Dave again, let's talk about your upcoming tour, which starts
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: in a couple of weeks.

- 1:32:35Speaker 3: some Simpsons references in.

- 1:33:32Speaker 2: live here.
- 1:33:33Speaker 3: Yeah, I come back.
- 1:33:34Speaker 2: Do you still consider Gelong home?
- 1:33:38Speaker 3: I only did the mat for recently realised I've lived
- 1:33:40Speaker 3: in Melbourne now for longer in my life, but I
- 1:33:41Speaker 3: guess I've.
- 1:33:42Speaker 2: Still How old were you when you moved to Melbourne?
- 1:33:46Speaker 3: So when I was seas when I was twenty one,
- 1:33:48Speaker 3: and then came back when I was twenty four, so
- 1:33:51Speaker 3: it's been yeah about yeah, I think twenty years and.
- 1:33:54Speaker 2: Life and Geelong was fairly shit twenty years ago. I
- 1:33:57Speaker 2: can imagine why you'd want to move out of it.
- 1:34:00Speaker 2: I mean, that's not a great deal better now, but
- 1:34:02Speaker 2: it's certainly better than what it was twenty years ago.
- 1:34:05Speaker 3: I used to defend it all the time in Melbourne
- 1:34:07Speaker 3: because people would That's the thing I.
- 1:34:08Speaker 2: Was going to ask you, do you have to constantly
- 1:34:10Speaker 2: feel like do you tell people in Melbourne I'm from
- 1:34:12Speaker 2: Geelong or it's just easier not to No.
- 1:34:15Speaker 3: I tell them I'll always be proud about it. And
- 1:34:17Speaker 3: then well, this is very specific because people and sometimes
- 1:34:21Speaker 3: in Melbourne when I was first heading out my twenties,
- 1:34:23Speaker 3: they'd be like what school did you go to, which
- 1:34:24Speaker 3: is that's an interesting question. But I'd go Belmont High School,
- 1:34:28Speaker 3: and because I'd say it so quickly, they'd go on
- 1:34:30Speaker 3: Melbourne High and I'm like, oh, no, I went to
- 1:34:34Speaker 3: a suburban high school in Geelong. And then they're like, oh, Geelong.
- 1:34:37Speaker 3: And this was always my thing. When a new story
- 1:34:40Speaker 3: comes out, it's like, you know, a stabbing happened in Geelong,
- 1:34:43Speaker 3: and I was like, hang on a second, I know
- 1:34:45Speaker 3: where it happened in Geelong. There's certain areas where that
- 1:34:47Speaker 3: absolutely happened. And I said, when you're in a major
- 1:34:50Speaker 3: city like Melbourne, people would go, oh, there was a
- 1:34:52Speaker 3: stabbing in whatever suburb and you go yeah, because they
- 1:34:55Speaker 3: specifically understand that, but they would lump Gelong into one thing,
- 1:34:58Speaker 3: and I'm like, we've also got trap suburbs, okay, so yeah,
- 1:35:03Speaker 3: of course, and it did. It has gotten a hell
- 1:35:06Speaker 3: of a lot better. And I think because we like
- 1:35:08Speaker 3: heading down the coast down there, so quite off a
- 1:35:10Speaker 3: head through Geelong and my mum's still down there, my
- 1:35:12Speaker 3: brother and some really good mates, so yeah, I'm always
- 1:35:15Speaker 3: heading there.
- 1:35:16Speaker 2: I always put it's a direct correlation. But when the
- 1:35:20Speaker 2: cats got good, I feel like Geelong started to lift
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: its game as a city. It's like the city itself
- 1:35:26Speaker 2: just became a bit of a happier place to be around.
- 1:35:28Speaker 2: I think, because it's weird. Sports teams just have that
- 1:35:30Speaker 2: impact on regional towns and regional cities. When that team's
- 1:35:34Speaker 2: doing well, the city feels everyone's walking around with the
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: spring in their step.
- 1:35:37Speaker 4: Oh absolutely. And I always used to say when I
- 1:35:38Speaker 4: was working for the Audy, it's like, that's the Gelong
- 1:35:41Speaker 4: advertised by the way, the local paper of record. It's
- 1:35:44Speaker 4: like without crime and the cats. You know, we're basically
- 1:35:47Speaker 4: a pamphlet.
- 1:35:51Speaker 3: I mean it's kind of true. And I mean through
- 1:35:53Speaker 3: the nineties it was strange because we would make Grand
- 1:35:56Speaker 3: finals and lose them, and it was heartbreaking because somehow
- 1:36:01Speaker 3: becoming constantly second makes you feel somewhat worse, like you
- 1:36:05Speaker 3: just like see we will all and Sleepy Hollow was
- 1:36:08Speaker 3: this moniker that people would use and think it was.
- 1:36:10Speaker 3: But I mean in the eighties and guy, you remember,
- 1:36:12Speaker 3: this industry was closing down, like four was closing down,
- 1:36:16Speaker 3: Shell was closing down, Pyramid closed down, and so it
- 1:36:19Speaker 3: was we did cop it, and we copped it pretty hard.
- 1:36:21Speaker 2: But Pyramid was a big hit.
- 1:36:24Speaker 3: It was a big hit, and the and then so
- 1:36:27Speaker 3: now we've I mean I always saying it, I would
- 1:36:29Speaker 3: prefer to move to Gelng, that I would to the
- 1:36:31Speaker 3: outer suburbs of Melbourne. That it's probably going to take
- 1:36:33Speaker 3: just as long to get into Melbourne anyway. But also
- 1:36:35Speaker 3: we're near the coasts and it's great. Now, yeah, you're
- 1:36:39Speaker 3: right there.
- 1:36:39Speaker 2: It did feel for a while Whenjel would always come
- 1:36:41Speaker 2: a second it's like, you know, someone we said, the
- 1:36:42Speaker 2: lesson is never tried, Like what's the fucking point in trying?
- 1:36:44Speaker 2: You know we're never going to win it, so what's
- 1:36:47Speaker 2: the point.
- 1:36:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I remember doing ninety five. I remember us losing
- 1:36:52Speaker 3: to Carlton. At halftime, we just went out for kick
- 1:36:54Speaker 3: to kick with mates and then never went back, like
- 1:36:57Speaker 3: why would we keep watching the rest of this game.
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: That's my earliest football memory is Patron of the show
- 1:37:03Speaker 2: my uncle Darren, right, he's the one that got me
- 1:37:05Speaker 2: into footy. Right. This memory had a east had remember
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: half Cat, your mascot of the Cats, and a big
- 1:37:10Speaker 2: cardboard cutout of this half Cat. And obviously my uncle
- 1:37:13Speaker 2: hid live through the hard years and it was nine
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: ninety five. They getting smashed by ten goals by Carlton.
- 1:37:18Speaker 2: My memory is of Michael d had to stabbing his
- 1:37:20Speaker 2: cardboard cat to a million pieces like he'd had enough.
- 1:37:23Speaker 2: That's my earliest football memories. A Geelong fans stabbing the
- 1:37:26Speaker 2: mascot to death.
- 1:37:27Speaker 3: Well, it was also a time in the football player
- 1:37:29Speaker 3: didn't even want to live in Geelong. Like there were
- 1:37:31Speaker 3: stories of John Barnes who'd go, yeah, we'll come down
- 1:37:33Speaker 3: my training and then I head back up. Oh why
- 1:37:35Speaker 3: would I live there? So it was always that and
- 1:37:38Speaker 3: then you're right, we start winning. I mean when we
- 1:37:40Speaker 3: lost the Grand Final last year, I was I couldn't
- 1:37:43Speaker 3: get tickets luckily in hindsight, and I was with watching
- 1:37:46Speaker 3: it with all friends who are all going for Brisbane
- 1:37:48Speaker 3: because they just hated our success and then they hated
- 1:37:51Speaker 3: me even more when at the end of it, I
- 1:37:52Speaker 3: was like, ah, well, I mean, you know, that's another
- 1:37:55Speaker 3: Grand Final loss. But I've now seen I think seven
- 1:37:57Speaker 3: and we've won three or four and they're like, shat up.
- 1:38:00Speaker 2: Yeah we went in a couple of years ago.
- 1:38:03Speaker 3: We're fine, I know, and so you're right, you kind
- 1:38:06Speaker 3: of get up and about so before.
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: We let you go, though, we do ask everybody this question.
- 1:38:10Speaker 2: So it's nineteen ninety eight. Channel ten of asked you
- 1:38:12Speaker 2: to put together a Friday night Simpsons marathon consisting of
- 1:38:16Speaker 2: five episodes. Which episodes are you choosing and why? And
- 1:38:18Speaker 2: which one are you beginning with?
- 1:38:20Speaker 3: Oh, I'm beginning with this might be Recncy bias because
- 1:38:25Speaker 3: I did watch this with the kids. That the episode
- 1:38:27Speaker 3: I Love Lisa with Ralph Wigham, and I love it
- 1:38:31Speaker 3: because there's so many quotes from it that I just
- 1:38:34Speaker 3: you choose me and all that kind of stuff. But
- 1:38:36Speaker 3: also it's the one with the Krusty's twenty ninth anniversary special,
- 1:38:40Speaker 3: and I still quote that thing when he goes, who's
- 1:38:43Speaker 3: going to remember a sage shell? Rahem? And he's next
- 1:38:46Speaker 3: to this melot of black panther African American guy and
- 1:38:50Speaker 3: Krusty in the seventies, and Krusty goes the scripts that
- 1:38:53Speaker 3: I should hit you over the head with this hammer
- 1:38:55Speaker 3: and says, oh, wouldn't, Ah, I wouldn't. It cuts back
- 1:38:59Speaker 3: to him in the audience and he goes angry, angry
- 1:39:02Speaker 3: young man. That has stuck in my head.
- 1:39:08Speaker 2: For so long, and I just is that that, Oh God,
- 1:39:12Speaker 2: this is always dead. Ye My talk to the audience.
- 1:39:16Speaker 2: Our God, there is always death.
- 1:39:18Speaker 3: It's always if we can, like Steve, we consist an
- 1:39:20Speaker 3: idiot through the whole thing, which is but like it
- 1:39:22Speaker 3: really it was the first time I remember him really
- 1:39:25Speaker 3: being a feature and being an imbecile. Like they're driving
- 1:39:28Speaker 3: to the to Krusty show and she goes, how did
- 1:39:31Speaker 3: you get the tickets? Yours? He goes, he knows how
- 1:39:33Speaker 3: to play ball. And they're at an actual porno film
- 1:39:37Speaker 3: sit them up there and he goes and he goes,
- 1:39:39Speaker 3: oh god, is this a bust? And he goes, oh, yeah, sure,
- 1:39:42Speaker 3: and he has no idea what's happening?
- 1:39:45Speaker 2: I think said nothing at Chocolate Out, like Lisa says,
- 1:39:48Speaker 2: that's not suitable for children really, like my pants are
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: in this version exactly.
- 1:39:53Speaker 3: So that's starting with I Love Lisa. I Love Lisa
- 1:39:56Speaker 3: will be the first one. Then I would go with
- 1:40:00Speaker 3: Flaming Mo in that I do love the Flaming Mo episode.
- 1:40:05Speaker 3: It's all about most is lack, which I mean is
- 1:40:08Speaker 3: most Like I've heard this. He's based off a stand
- 1:40:11Speaker 3: up comedian. What is his name? He's an American guy
- 1:40:14Speaker 3: and I've done gigs with him.
- 1:40:15Speaker 2: Oh wow, mo is Mo.
- 1:40:17Speaker 3: Yeah, because I think, Hanka Zaria, I'm trying to look
- 1:40:19Speaker 3: it up now. The real life inspiration, Hanka Zaria I
- 1:40:23Speaker 3: said it was Rich Hall.
- 1:40:24Speaker 2: So what was the third episode that you would have
- 1:40:26Speaker 2: put on?
- 1:40:27Speaker 3: The third would be Homer's Barbershop Quartet.
- 1:40:32Speaker 2: Are you a Beatles fan?
- 1:40:33Speaker 3: I'm not a I've actually gotten into them in the
- 1:40:37Speaker 3: last year. I picked up a book about John and
- 1:40:39Speaker 3: Paul and then was like, these guys really are good.
- 1:40:41Speaker 3: And then listening to the more un Spotify and things
- 1:40:45Speaker 3: like that. I wasn't growing up and then, but I
- 1:40:48Speaker 3: always like the Barbershop Quartet, just the references, and I
- 1:40:51Speaker 3: mean Barney having his Yoko ono and I'm murdering her.
- 1:40:55Speaker 3: It's a new and experimental places number eight. That's something
- 1:41:01Speaker 3: that lives in my head.
- 1:41:02Speaker 2: What does your eyes for?
- 1:41:03Speaker 4: A plum in a pool of perfume served in a
- 1:41:06Speaker 4: man's hat?
- 1:41:08Speaker 2: Got yeah, I got it. A single plump floating served
- 1:41:11Speaker 2: in a man's hat. Yeah, But what's what's the one
- 1:41:13Speaker 2: where it's a pool? Changes his name? No, no, that's it.
- 1:41:17Speaker 4: But you're like Homer, never play on a marquete. Your
- 1:41:20Speaker 4: name is now Homer, your name is now a pooh
- 1:41:22Speaker 4: de bo Marche so disrespectful to my culture of my god.
- 1:41:26Speaker 2: But yeah, all right, but what's that Homer says that
- 1:41:30Speaker 2: his name like Homer and the you always say it's
- 1:41:32Speaker 2: the band name that you love.
- 1:41:34Speaker 4: Oh no, it's oh no, we're going to be the
- 1:41:37Speaker 4: is it? The most is like experience featuring Homer. Anytime
- 1:41:42Speaker 4: you've got anything featuring someone, it's just I think it's
- 1:41:44Speaker 4: just a great gag. But yeah, the most is like
- 1:41:46Speaker 4: experience featuring Homer.
- 1:41:48Speaker 3: Yeah that's correat.
- 1:41:49Speaker 2: But yeah, as a Beatles fan, I mean, I wasn't
- 1:41:51Speaker 2: a Beatles fan when I was younger I've got I'm
- 1:41:54Speaker 2: a big Beatles fan now. But the older I got,
- 1:41:55Speaker 2: the more I appreciated episode because I understood all the
- 1:41:58Speaker 2: extras gags. But the episode, again, though, you can enjoy
- 1:42:01Speaker 2: it not being a Beatles fan. That's what's so great
- 1:42:02Speaker 2: about it. And George Harrison has a fantastic guest appearance
- 1:42:05Speaker 2: in it.
- 1:42:06Speaker 3: Yes, exactly.
- 1:42:07Speaker 2: Wow, what a nice fella it was.
- 1:42:09Speaker 3: Really it's when it got I mean this in a
- 1:42:11Speaker 3: nice way, it's when the show got really bonkers, Like
- 1:42:13Speaker 3: the storylines weren't just about these family things. It was
- 1:42:16Speaker 3: like when it really got like wow, what are we
- 1:42:18Speaker 3: doing now? And yeah, I love that episode. I think
- 1:42:21Speaker 3: the next one would be Deep Space Homer in broad Wedrus. Yes,
- 1:42:27Speaker 3: that would be incredible.
- 1:42:29Speaker 2: I don't know that one is so great. You think
- 1:42:31Speaker 2: the idea of you're talking about the show going wacky
- 1:42:35Speaker 2: by this point home it's literally going to space. Yes,
- 1:42:39Speaker 2: but but they still do it in a way that
- 1:42:41Speaker 2: you just you buy it. When he's on the phone
- 1:42:43Speaker 2: to Mart and he's like, like the time I want
- 1:42:45Speaker 2: to go see mister t down of the Mill, Oh
- 1:42:48Speaker 2: my god.
- 1:42:48Speaker 3: I got a little longer.
- 1:42:49Speaker 2: I got a little longer.
- 1:42:52Speaker 3: And then he said, I won't let that happen. I
- 1:42:53Speaker 3: can't let that happen. And I won't let that happen.
- 1:42:55Speaker 2: I learned from that. I'm thinking sometimes there's things and
- 1:42:58Speaker 2: I go, ah, I do it to my like, you
- 1:43:00Speaker 2: know what, hom I missed out on seams the tea.
- 1:43:02Speaker 2: I'm not going to let that happen.
- 1:43:05Speaker 4: There are two bits I just that I really really
- 1:43:08Speaker 4: love about it. They probably happily win. My favorite Simpsons
- 1:43:10Speaker 4: of moments is when he had the press conference. I
- 1:43:13Speaker 4: don't care where we go as long as I go
- 1:43:14Speaker 4: to that terrible planet of the apes.
- 1:43:16Speaker 3: Wait a minute, wait the rest of wait a minute,
- 1:43:23Speaker 3: he goes, wait a minute, a minute, there was our planets.
- 1:43:30Speaker 3: It's like in that moment, but we realized that that's us.
- 1:43:34Speaker 2: Yeah, and then the guys like this, this is over.
- 1:43:36Speaker 2: The curtain comes Barney berpsy passes out and drunk.
- 1:43:39Speaker 4: Wait a minute, just a minute, statue of limity that planet,
- 1:43:44Speaker 4: but also the James Taylor supporting supporting appearance, so good,
- 1:43:49Speaker 4: and when Barney, all, do you respect mister Taylor? This
- 1:43:51Speaker 4: isn't the time of your unique plant?
- 1:43:53Speaker 2: Brenda?
- 1:43:54Speaker 3: What is it?
- 1:43:54Speaker 4: Laid back folk rock?
- 1:43:57Speaker 3: When Barney obviously trains and he is like unbelievable, he
- 1:44:01Speaker 3: looks incredible. Let's celebrate. And then as soon as he
- 1:44:05Speaker 3: drinks the morphing into him, but it's happening again.
- 1:44:10Speaker 4: I don't understand it.
- 1:44:11Speaker 3: That was none alcoholic life.
- 1:44:17Speaker 2: I think my favor bit is the second comes right
- 1:44:19Speaker 2: after first. Careful they're ruffled, all right? And what would
- 1:44:25Speaker 2: be your final episode for your marathon?
- 1:44:27Speaker 3: I'm of the heretic now. I mentioned it before with
- 1:44:30Speaker 3: the poo quotes that my children want me to say
- 1:44:33Speaker 3: out in public, but that one, I think it's just
- 1:44:36Speaker 3: the religious undertones. I think they tackle it so well,
- 1:44:39Speaker 3: and it's I just find a very funny episode just
- 1:44:44Speaker 3: with so many quotables in it. I mean, even a
- 1:44:47Speaker 3: reverend love Joy at the end when he says, see,
- 1:44:49Speaker 3: all religions can help out, and he points out who's
- 1:44:52Speaker 3: helped out and he goes, be it Christian, Jew or miscellaneous,
- 1:45:00Speaker 3: A million of us us love Joe goes, that's silcret,
- 1:45:04Speaker 3: so condescend me.
- 1:45:08Speaker 2: But I was just the story of that one too.
- 1:45:10Speaker 2: When you're married with kids, just the idea of getting
- 1:45:12Speaker 2: a Sunday morning to yourself at home, to fucking watch
- 1:45:14Speaker 2: what you want, eat what you want, just chill out.
- 1:45:16Speaker 2: It sounds like heaven.
- 1:45:18Speaker 3: Right, yes. And I think also again with my age,
- 1:45:21Speaker 3: my grandmother was Catholic. She was a lovely lady and
- 1:45:24Speaker 3: she would go to church somewhat consistently. And then when
- 1:45:28Speaker 3: she passed away when I was about eleven or twelve, again,
- 1:45:30Speaker 3: when I started The Simpsons, it was like we're all
- 1:45:32Speaker 3: kind of like, we're still doing this, and so there
- 1:45:35Speaker 3: was this thing of like church was a thing, and
- 1:45:38Speaker 3: even my mum was like, oh, you know, maybe we'll go,
- 1:45:41Speaker 3: maybe we won't. So it was always you're trying to
- 1:45:43Speaker 3: weasel out of it. And I completely got where he's
- 1:45:46Speaker 3: coming from because Sunday mornings now it's the one morning
- 1:45:49Speaker 3: in our family life where we're like, no, we're not
- 1:45:51Speaker 3: moving quick, We're not doing stuff. It's going to be fine.
- 1:45:53Speaker 3: The thought of getting dressed up to go to a
- 1:45:56Speaker 3: place that is possibly the most boring of your week
- 1:46:00Speaker 3: is yeah, you do anything to get out of it.
- 1:46:03Speaker 4: You know, they have services in the afternoon.
- 1:46:06Speaker 3: Yeah, you're right, but I just.
- 1:46:09Speaker 2: Sorry.
- 1:46:10Speaker 4: I was raised Catholic as well. It's hard to shake
- 1:46:12Speaker 4: that shit.
- 1:46:13Speaker 3: It really is, because I mean Australia is fairly secular.
- 1:46:15Speaker 3: I think in this day and age, I mean people
- 1:46:16Speaker 3: go to church. That is fine, but I think back
- 1:46:18Speaker 3: then it really was a thing of like you could
- 1:46:20Speaker 3: see it all slipping from everyone's fingers, like I wis
- 1:46:23Speaker 3: oh yeah, absolutely, all right.
- 1:46:25Speaker 2: Well that just wraps up our chat here reviewing Rose.
- 1:46:27Speaker 2: But I thank you so much Day for your time.
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: It's been an absolute pleasure to have you on the show.
- 1:46:30Speaker 3: Thank you Dad, guys slicker this, I mean, Detroit came together.
- 1:46:33Speaker 2: For this one. I know, right Seattle on the bar
- 1:46:36Speaker 2: and represent exactly and thank you all the best for
- 1:46:41Speaker 2: your tour in twenty twenty six.
- 1:46:42Speaker 3: Appreciate it. Thanks guys,
