Latest / Patriots Catch-22 / Patriots Catch-22 8/25: Preseason Week 2 Recap, Reported Boutte Trade, Depth Talk
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: I think we're live now. I think we're good. Sure,
- 0:13Speaker 1: let's start, I think. Had some technical difficulties there.
- 0:18Speaker 2: It's okay.
- 0:19Speaker 1: It happens. If we are on here, hello. How we doing? Bartha,
- 0:25Speaker 1: we have something to talk about today. I had a
- 0:29Speaker 1: whole thing planned to talk about... the game on Saturday night,
- 0:34Speaker 1: some of the practices that we've seen since the last
- 0:36Speaker 1: time we were on the air. Uh, but then yesterday afternoon, uh,
- 0:40Speaker 1: we find out that the Patriots reportedly still not officially
- 0:44Speaker 1: announced yet, uh, reportedly have traded Keishon booty to the
- 0:48Speaker 1: Houston Texans, uh, for safety Jalen Reed and a 2028
- 0:52Speaker 1: draft pick. So, uh, you know, obviously a lot to
- 0:55Speaker 1: react to this trade Keishon booty, uh, trading him in general, uh,
- 1:00Speaker 1: Jalen Reed and the players are getting back for him. Uh,
- 1:03Speaker 1: the wide receiver room fallout from this trade as well. Uh,
- 1:07Speaker 1: but just starting with Keishon booty, I think we were
- 1:11Speaker 1: talking about this, uh, with ACE before the show started,
- 1:15Speaker 1: we have watched Keishon booty here in new England, uh,
- 1:19Speaker 1: as Patriots fans and observers, we have watched Kayshaun Booty
- 1:22Speaker 1: kind of rise from the ashes. A guy that was
- 1:24Speaker 1: drafted in the sixth round that didn't get his foot
- 1:27Speaker 1: in bounds in his very first NFL game on a
- 1:30Speaker 1: catch along the sideline, which put him in the doghouse
- 1:33Speaker 1: with Bill Belichick, which basically made him redshirt his entire
- 1:37Speaker 1: rookie year. And then we watched him get better and
- 1:40Speaker 1: better and better to the point where he was a
- 1:43Speaker 1: big contributor for a team that made the Super Bowl.
- 1:46Speaker 1: So there is... I guess, sentimental value that we have
- 1:52Speaker 1: with the player built up equity that we have with
- 1:55Speaker 1: Keishon booty that I think we need to recognize the
- 1:59Speaker 1: other 31 teams in the league are not thinking of
- 2:04Speaker 1: Kayshaun Booty as this long-term, look at where he's come
- 2:07Speaker 1: up from, look at him rise from the ashes, a
- 2:11Speaker 1: wide receiver that the Patriots actually developed and drafted and developed.
- 2:15Speaker 1: They're not looking at it that way as the other
- 2:18Speaker 1: 31 teams. The other 31 teams are seeing 33 catches
- 2:22Speaker 1: for 500 yards and six touchdowns. That's the production. Now
- 2:26Speaker 1: we might look at that a little bit differently than
- 2:28Speaker 1: they do because of the history that we have with
- 2:32Speaker 1: Keishon booty. Uh, but what I'm getting at is we
- 2:35Speaker 1: have discussed on this show multiple times. I'm sure you've
- 2:38Speaker 1: discussed it on your 17 shows as well. The market
- 2:41Speaker 1: for Keishon booty was never what Patriots fans thought of
- 2:46Speaker 1: Keishon booty. So I'm not telling you have to like trade, right?
- 2:49Speaker 1: I'm just telling you that I don't think any of
- 2:51Speaker 1: us are that shocked here sitting here on today on
- 2:54Speaker 1: Tuesday morning, uh, As we record this, I don't think
- 2:57Speaker 1: any of us are that shocked that they didn't get
- 3:00Speaker 1: blown away with an offer for Keishon Booty. Like when
- 3:02Speaker 1: you were hearing things like second round picks, third round picks,
- 3:06Speaker 1: things like that, that was never on the table for
- 3:10Speaker 1: Keishon Booty. So as much as I understand why people
- 3:14Speaker 1: are underwhelmed by the return and it does feel like
- 3:17Speaker 1: an underwhelming return on the surface.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Yep.
- 3:20Speaker 1: I also don't think that there was ever going to
- 3:23Speaker 1: be anything much better than this on the table based
- 3:25Speaker 1: on the market. So that's my initial reaction to the trade.
- 3:28Speaker 1: I have a bunch of other thoughts, but what's your
- 3:30Speaker 1: initial reaction to it as well?
- 3:31Speaker 3: Um, underwhelming return, but I understand why they did it
- 3:35Speaker 3: and we can get to, you know, Jalen Reed and
- 3:39Speaker 3: maybe some of what he brings. I think you highlighted
- 3:41Speaker 3: an important point that, uh, I think something you just
- 3:48Speaker 3: noted is a very important piece in why this happened.
- 3:50Speaker 3: And that is the way the rest of the league
- 3:52Speaker 3: viewed Kayshaun Booty. So if you, and I think people
- 3:58Speaker 3: look at the return at different levels. If you're somebody
- 3:59Speaker 3: who's really low on the return and you wanted Kayshaun
- 4:01Speaker 3: Booty here and you believed, oh, well, you know, he'll
- 4:04Speaker 3: be fine with the backup role or whatever. Take that
- 4:08Speaker 3: return and translate that into a contract. That's what Kayshaun
- 4:13Speaker 3: Booty was looking at if he hit the market in
- 4:16Speaker 3: for agency without adding to his production, significantly adding to
- 4:20Speaker 3: his production, right? That's why he ultimately wanted out because
- 4:25Speaker 3: he wants to increase his value in the eyes of
- 4:27Speaker 3: the league before he hits the open market.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Right.
- 4:29Speaker 3: And so then if you're the pay, that's part of
- 4:32Speaker 3: what makes him the odd man out. If you're the Patriots,
- 4:35Speaker 3: you know, Oh, why couldn't they have moved off of
- 4:37Speaker 3: Mac Hollins instead? Well, Mac Hollins is okay with that
- 4:39Speaker 3: lesser role. We, I mean, I assume I haven't asked him,
- 4:42Speaker 3: but he did it last year. Seemed fine with it.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Kyle Williams is on the second year.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Kyle Williams doesn't really have a choice, yeah.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Well, he's on the second year of the same rookie
- 4:49Speaker 1: contract Keishon Booty was on, but Keishon Booty's on the
- 4:52Speaker 1: fourth year of the contract instead of the second, so
- 4:55Speaker 1: they have team control of Kyle Williams.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Right.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Efton Chisholm, kind of the same thing, also plays a
- 5:00Speaker 3: different role.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:02Speaker 3: I think you can both say.
- 5:08Speaker 2: He..
- 5:08Speaker 3: I understand why Keishon Booty was the odd man out.
- 5:10Speaker 3: I understand why they traded him. The return is disappointing,
- 5:14Speaker 3: but looking back, like, the more I look at it,
- 5:17Speaker 3: it's like, okay, it makes some more sense. Like, the
- 5:20Speaker 3: big thing is going to be, what does Jalen Reed
- 5:22Speaker 3: become for the Patriots, and what does Keishon Booty do
- 5:24Speaker 3: for the Texans? Because your thing the whole time was
- 5:27Speaker 3: just don't trade into an AFC contender.
- 5:29Speaker 1: That's the part of the trade I like the least.
- 5:31Speaker 3: And the more I look at it the same way,
- 5:33Speaker 3: we'll see what Jalen Reed is. If Jalen Reed, and
- 5:35Speaker 3: I see some people talking like Jalen Reed might not
- 5:37Speaker 3: even make the team. Jalen Reed's on the team.
- 5:39Speaker 4: Oh yeah.
- 5:39Speaker 1: You don't make this trade for him. If you don't,
- 5:41Speaker 1: if you're not, if Jalen.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Reed doesn't make the team, we can revisit this. And
- 5:44Speaker 3: then it's a major mistake, right?
- 5:46Speaker 1: I mean, why wouldn't he make less than a week
- 5:48Speaker 1: from roster cuts?
- 5:49Speaker 3: Just cause I've seen some people say that. So just
- 5:51Speaker 3: to put it out there.
- 5:52Speaker 1: What is he going to do in the next six days,
- 5:54Speaker 1: five days, that's going to make him not make the team.
- 5:56Speaker 3: I think some people look at it cause he was
- 5:57Speaker 3: a backup in Houston, only played seven games last year.
- 6:00Speaker 3: He was hurt. He actually started both playoff games for
- 6:02Speaker 3: them as a rookie, which is notable, but, You know,
- 6:05Speaker 3: if Kate Shambuti's going off and putting up big games
- 6:09Speaker 3: for the Texans, as the Texans and the Patriots are
- 6:11Speaker 3: kind of right there battling in the standings, it's going
- 6:14Speaker 3: to get looked at a little differently, right? So, especially
- 6:17Speaker 3: if Jalen Reed's not playing a ton. I think Jalen
- 6:19Speaker 3: Reed might actually play a little bit for the Patriots
- 6:20Speaker 3: and not just on special teams. Yeah, I want to
- 6:22Speaker 3: get to Jalen Reed. Yeah, like, I think people have
- 6:25Speaker 3: a right to be disappointed with the return. The reporting
- 6:28Speaker 3: was in May that it was a fifth-round pick, which...
- 6:32Speaker 3: I think some people wouldn't have felt great about, but
- 6:35Speaker 3: it's obviously a little more. I do think some people view, again,
- 6:38Speaker 3: it's going to come down to, I do think some
- 6:40Speaker 3: people view Jalen Reed as a throw-in. Jalen Reed's not
- 6:44Speaker 3: a throw-in. Jalen Reed is a player who's going to
- 6:46Speaker 3: be on the roster. Real quick, funny story, and then
- 6:49Speaker 3: we can get to Jalen Reed. My buddy, who's like
- 6:51Speaker 3: a pretty casual football fan, like he's a Pats fan,
- 6:53Speaker 3: but outside of that, he plays fantasy and he doesn't
- 6:56Speaker 3: really follow all the teams closely. And he usually is
- 6:59Speaker 3: pretty pessimistic on any deal the Patriots make. He's a
- 7:01Speaker 3: big Keishon Booty fan too. Text me, he goes, wow,
- 7:04Speaker 3: what a trade. I'm like, You actually like it? Like,
- 7:06Speaker 3: I'm surprised. He goes, yeah, dude, Jalen Reed can play.
- 7:09Speaker 3: I loved watching him. I'm like, I didn't know. And
- 7:11Speaker 3: he hates college football more than you. Like, zero. I'm like,
- 7:14Speaker 3: you're like a big fan of his at Penn State? Like,
- 7:16Speaker 3: what's going on? He goes, no, like the Guardian cap guy, right?
- 7:18Speaker 3: He's a big hitter. I thought they traded for Jalen Petrie,
- 7:21Speaker 3: which would be a very different trade.
- 7:23Speaker 1: They traded for a player that..
- 7:25Speaker 3: They traded for Jalen Petrie's backup.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Yeah, they traded for a player that they hope could
- 7:28Speaker 1: be something like Jalen Petrie.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Right.
- 7:31Speaker 3: I just wanted to share that. I thought that was funny.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Yeah, so I would say... We kind of hit it
- 7:37Speaker 1: both directions here, which I think is good. From the
- 7:42Speaker 1: market angle, from the Patriots angle of this trade, I
- 7:46Speaker 1: don't think that the market was as hot for Keishon
- 7:49Speaker 1: Booty as everybody would think here locally.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Yeah, this is the one other thing I meant to say,
- 7:53Speaker 3: and this is my bigger second guess on the trade,
- 7:55Speaker 3: and maybe there's some semantics here. If they had made
- 8:01Speaker 3: this trade, Rosser cuts headlines Sunday at 6 o'clock, Sunday
- 8:04Speaker 3: 6 p.m. If they'd made this trade at 530 on Sunday,
- 8:08Speaker 3: I'd feel a little better about it solely for the
- 8:11Speaker 3: reason that like, all right, this is what out there.
- 8:13Speaker 3: You got it done at the buzzer. You had to
- 8:15Speaker 3: trade him, whatever. Again, I get why he had to
- 8:16Speaker 3: be traded. There's a part of me that's like, there's
- 8:20Speaker 3: still wide receiver needy teams out there. Could they have
- 8:23Speaker 3: waited and seen if anybody got a little more desperate
- 8:25Speaker 3: this week and offered any more? Maybe not. Maybe the
- 8:28Speaker 3: Texans put a clock on this offer. I don't know.
- 8:31Speaker 3: I wasn't in the room. That honestly was my big
- 8:34Speaker 3: second guess was could you at least run it down
- 8:36Speaker 3: to the buzzer and seen if anybody came up with
- 8:38Speaker 3: something in the 11th hour that was more than this.
- 8:42Speaker 3: So maybe there was a reason they couldn't.
- 8:45Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 8:45Speaker 3: I'm sure the Texans obviously would rather get it done sooner. Hey,
- 8:48Speaker 3: we want to get him in our offense. We want
- 8:49Speaker 3: to get him working with C.J. Stroud, all of that. Understandable.
- 8:55Speaker 3: I do wonder why now and why not run it
- 9:01Speaker 3: out until the latest he possibly could.
- 9:03Speaker 1: So the other argument, of course, in that same vein,
- 9:06Speaker 1: is there's kind of two windows to trade him. One
- 9:09Speaker 1: was now and one was the trade deadline in season.
- 9:13Speaker 1: So could you have held on to him until I
- 9:15Speaker 1: think it's like early November?
- 9:17Speaker 3: See, I didn't like that to me was a lose-lose.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Well, that's kind of what I was getting at because
- 9:22Speaker 1: I've seen that take out there.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:25Speaker 1: How is his value sitting on the bench today? where
- 9:30Speaker 1: you're going to get him for less games. If you're
- 9:33Speaker 1: the team that's trading for him, going to go up.
- 9:36Speaker 3: If somebody really gets hurt, which I would be the
- 9:38Speaker 3: one thing you don't know.
- 9:39Speaker 1: I just don't know how his value increases here at,
- 9:43Speaker 1: you know, riding the bench behind AJ Brown and Romeo Dobbs.
- 9:47Speaker 1: And then you get to the trade deadline. And remember
- 9:50Speaker 1: a lot of these trades, we don't look at it
- 9:53Speaker 1: this way necessarily as much, but teams look at it
- 9:56Speaker 1: as how many games are we getting team connections? of
- 10:00Speaker 1: this player for? So, so the Texans are going to
- 10:02Speaker 1: get the whole season now from Keishon booty. If they
- 10:05Speaker 1: trade for him at the trade deadline, they're only going
- 10:07Speaker 1: to get eight or eight or nine games from him.
- 10:09Speaker 1: That team that's different. That is a different amount of,
- 10:13Speaker 1: you know, that's a different trade at that point. So
- 10:17Speaker 1: I think that it's from both angles. From the Patriots' angle,
- 10:21Speaker 1: I think that they've been chopping Keishon Booty. We really
- 10:23Speaker 1: started to hear that this, I would say, strongly around
- 10:27Speaker 1: the draft. So this has been going on since April
- 10:30Speaker 1: that they've been monitoring the market to trade Keishon Booty.
- 10:34Speaker 1: The package offers never really got crazy. They never really
- 10:38Speaker 1: got desperate. They never really got anything of real substance
- 10:42Speaker 1: in terms of draft pick compensation. That's that side of it.
- 10:47Speaker 1: And we were on the crossover podcast and we were
- 10:49Speaker 1: talking about offers for Keishon booty. And I said on
- 10:53Speaker 1: that show, if they had gotten a third round pick
- 10:55Speaker 1: offer so far for Keishon booty, he would already be gone.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Right?
- 10:58Speaker 1: Like this is just not materializing the way. The other
- 11:01Speaker 1: thing is what you said, which is from his perspective
- 11:05Speaker 1: of how, you know, maximizing his value on the last year.
- 11:08Speaker 3: And this is a great spot for him, by the way,
- 11:10Speaker 3: let's throw that in there. Like happy for him. The
- 11:13Speaker 3: thing I'll say about the trade deadline that, Maybe his
- 11:16Speaker 3: value goes up. Say, like, Devite. Well, they're not going
- 11:18Speaker 3: to because they don't have a quarterback. But some good
- 11:21Speaker 3: team starts off 6-2, 7-2, loses their top receiver. Like,
- 11:26Speaker 3: now maybe Booty has more value because that team is
- 11:28Speaker 3: more desperate. I still think holding on, even though that
- 11:31Speaker 3: could happen, holding on, Tim, until the trade deadline was
- 11:35Speaker 3: a lose-lose because you still end up without Keyshawn Booty,
- 11:40Speaker 3: but you also lose that other roster spot you would
- 11:44Speaker 3: have had to start the season and he would have
- 11:46Speaker 3: been sitting on the bench is mostly non-contributing players. So
- 11:50Speaker 3: the deadline for me was roster cuts. When I say,
- 11:52Speaker 3: could they have waited until the end? The end was
- 11:54Speaker 3: Sunday at six o'clock to me. The end was roster cuts.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:58Speaker 3: He wasn't going to be on the 53, but you
- 12:00Speaker 3: could have still carried him on the 90 for another week.
- 12:03Speaker 3: And again, maybe somebody goes nuts and that clock's ticking
- 12:06Speaker 3: down and maybe they think certain wide receivers are going
- 12:09Speaker 3: to be waved or that aren't getting waved. And it's
- 12:10Speaker 3: all right. Like, here we go. We'll yeah. We'll, we'll
- 12:13Speaker 3: give you a little more, Um, that is, I just
- 12:17Speaker 3: said something that reminded me of another take I had
- 12:18Speaker 3: on this and I'm trying to remember what it was. Oh,
- 12:22Speaker 3: I don't, I also don't think they were ever going
- 12:24Speaker 3: to keep seven. I don't think that was ever realistic,
- 12:27Speaker 3: especially after Vrabel's comment about the depth.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:30Speaker 3: And the reason I say that, because I see some
- 12:31Speaker 3: people saying, well, you're complaining about the depth and you
- 12:34Speaker 3: trade this really good depth player.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Let me hold that thought because this is related to
- 12:38Speaker 1: Jalen Reed and I know where you're going.
- 12:40Speaker 3: So just borrow from one to take.
- 12:41Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:42Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 12:42Speaker 3: So let me just tee it up with this before
- 12:44Speaker 3: you get to safety.
- 12:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 12:45Speaker 3: Are they still deep at receiver?
- 12:47Speaker 2: Yes. Agree.
- 12:48Speaker 3: And now they're deep in a deeper and another position.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:50Speaker 1: So last thing on, and then I want to segue
- 12:53Speaker 1: into exactly what you were just getting into. Mike Rabel,
- 12:57Speaker 1: since he's gotten here, has been very cognizant of the
- 13:00Speaker 1: locker room and the vibes in the locker room, the culture,
- 13:05Speaker 1: all that kind of stuff. He's been very cognizant of that.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Kajan Booty has been an absolute a great soldier about this.
- 13:14Speaker 1: He's done everything right about this. He's done everything, you know,
- 13:18Speaker 1: above board about this. To the point where Todd Downing,
- 13:21Speaker 1: the wide receivers coach, is saying he's going to use
- 13:24Speaker 1: it as future coaching examples of how to handle a
- 13:27Speaker 1: situation like this, a difficult situation for a guy like
- 13:31Speaker 1: Keyshawn Booty, who could not have handled it better.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Right.
- 13:35Speaker 1: That being said, if you're a coach and you're very
- 13:38Speaker 1: cognizant of the culture and in the locker room, Having
- 13:41Speaker 1: a guy that feels like he should be playing, having
- 13:44Speaker 1: a guy that's not maximizing his contract value in a
- 13:49Speaker 1: contract season, going into free agency next year, losing playing time,
- 13:55Speaker 1: significant playing time, and sitting on the bench. That to
- 13:58Speaker 1: me feels like some of the moves, other moves Vrabel
- 14:01Speaker 1: has made since he got here, that they just don't
- 14:03Speaker 1: want to be in a position where not everybody is
- 14:09Speaker 1: on the program and not everybody is pulling the rope
- 14:11Speaker 1: in the same direction. And I'm not saying that Keishon
- 14:14Speaker 1: Booty wasn't doing that up until this point. But when
- 14:18Speaker 1: a Sunday passes and a Sunday passes and a Sunday
- 14:20Speaker 1: passes and he's still standing there with his helmet off
- 14:23Speaker 1: on the sideline, It's just human nature.
- 14:26Speaker 3: You're asking. I think what people lose track of, you
- 14:30Speaker 3: can be not every player that's disgruntled as being a diva.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Right.
- 14:35Speaker 3: You can understand I'd be disgruntled. He'd be rightfully disgruntled.
- 14:38Speaker 1: OK, so the other point that I wanted to get
- 14:41Speaker 1: to is Jalen Reed. and just talking about him as
- 14:44Speaker 1: a player, you just mentioned exactly what I think this
- 14:47Speaker 1: trade was about. They talked about depth and a lack
- 14:50Speaker 1: of depth. I think specifically, actually, one of the exercises
- 14:53Speaker 1: I wanted to do before this news broke yesterday, and
- 14:56Speaker 1: we'll get to here in a little bit, is what
- 14:58Speaker 1: positions do they have depth in and what positions do
- 15:01Speaker 1: they not have depth in to our eye, to our opinions.
- 15:06Speaker 1: And that was the money quote from after the game
- 15:08Speaker 1: from Mike Vrabel. Elliot Wolfe actually said kind of the
- 15:11Speaker 1: same thing at halftime to the McCourty's on the game broadcast.
- 15:15Speaker 1: But the Vrabel quote was a little bit more.
- 15:18Speaker 3: Direct headline grabby.
- 15:20Speaker 1: So the money quote of I don't think we're a
- 15:22Speaker 1: very deep team right now, Mike Reese, that that was
- 15:25Speaker 1: the money quote that everybody has written and everybody has highlighted.
- 15:30Speaker 1: The wide receiver room was seven deep. The safety room,
- 15:34Speaker 1: which is something that we have talked about on this show,
- 15:37Speaker 1: was really too deep. And maybe if my guide, who
- 15:41Speaker 1: I have built an island for, by the way, where
- 15:44Speaker 1: we have another island for John Saunders, maybe John Saunders
- 15:48Speaker 1: has made a push here in training camp to make
- 15:52Speaker 1: the roster.
- 15:53Speaker 6: But..
- 15:55Speaker 1: They definitely felt like Craig Woodson and Kevin Bayard were
- 15:59Speaker 1: really all they had at safety. And I also want
- 16:01Speaker 1: to talk about the specific type of safety that Jalen
- 16:04Speaker 1: Reed is right. And how that brings value to the
- 16:08Speaker 1: team as a bigger nickel or a dime backer in
- 16:11Speaker 1: a way that I actually think, even though it's not
- 16:15Speaker 1: exactly the same position, it kind of helps your safety
- 16:19Speaker 1: and linebacker depth in a way to have a player
- 16:23Speaker 1: like this. So Jalen Reed, who's a guy, you know,
- 16:26Speaker 1: when he was coming out of Penn state, I found
- 16:29Speaker 1: him on my spreadsheet. I did watch him at Penn state.
- 16:32Speaker 1: I remember the player. I think the description that you
- 16:35Speaker 1: hear about the player, especially the way I wrote him up,
- 16:38Speaker 1: is similar to like a Kyle Duggar or Jabril Peppers,
- 16:41Speaker 1: but I think he moves a lot looser and more fluid.
- 16:43Speaker 3: So body type the exact same as Jabril Peppers.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I think very different type of player, though, in
- 16:48Speaker 1: terms of how he moves on the field. I think
- 16:50Speaker 1: he's a better cover player and a better space player
- 16:52Speaker 1: than those two guys. Probably not as physical at the
- 16:55Speaker 1: point of attack as those two players. You know, I
- 16:57Speaker 1: don't think that he's taken on pulling linemen and stuff
- 17:00Speaker 1: like that quite like those two guys can, but I
- 17:03Speaker 1: think he covers better and covers more ground and space
- 17:06Speaker 1: better than those two players. But the idea of Jalen Reed,
- 17:09Speaker 1: and I said this last night with your buddy, Joe Murray,
- 17:12Speaker 1: the idea of Jalen Reed, I love now. is Jalen
- 17:17Speaker 1: Reed going to develop into that player that is yet
- 17:20Speaker 1: to be determined, right? It's too early to determine whether
- 17:23Speaker 1: or not he's that guy yet. We have been talking
- 17:26Speaker 1: about on this show all summer long. Do they have
- 17:29Speaker 1: three safeties that they can play at once? Do they
- 17:32Speaker 1: have a third safety? Mike Brown hasn't stuck. How it
- 17:36Speaker 1: hasn't worked. Good spring tailed off in the summer. I
- 17:42Speaker 1: believe that Del Pettis is a special teams player. I
- 17:45Speaker 1: don't think Del Pettis is a guy that you want
- 17:47Speaker 1: playing too much defense, at least not building a package
- 17:50Speaker 1: around a player like Del Pettis. John Saunders, again, is
- 17:53Speaker 1: another one of these guys that's a training camp breakout player,
- 17:57Speaker 1: but he's doing it against twos and threes. The pick
- 17:59Speaker 1: he had in the joint practice was against Cole Payton,
- 18:02Speaker 1: who's the fourth string quarterback for the Eagles. Like that
- 18:05Speaker 1: was the types of guys he was playing with, not
- 18:07Speaker 1: taking anything away from what he's done, but who he's
- 18:11Speaker 1: playing with is important. You know, he's playing in preseason
- 18:14Speaker 1: games in the second half. He's playing against two threes
- 18:17Speaker 1: and fours in joint practices. Like that's the group he's
- 18:20Speaker 1: running with right now. So they haven't moved him up
- 18:23Speaker 1: the depth chart, so to speak. So with Jalen Reed,
- 18:28Speaker 1: I really liked the player type. I think that that
- 18:30Speaker 1: box slot safety, whatever you want to call it, nickel
- 18:34Speaker 1: dime backer, that.
- 18:36Speaker 3: Kind of slot corner safety, a little bit of linebacker is.
- 18:41Speaker 1: Six feet to 12 and plays with urgency and plays
- 18:44Speaker 1: with physicality. That kind of player is becoming extremely important
- 18:49Speaker 1: in the NFL because teams are putting more and more
- 18:53Speaker 1: beef on the field. Offensively, they're putting multiple tight ends.
- 18:57Speaker 1: Obviously the Rams play with three tight ends a lot.
- 19:00Speaker 1: Now that's popularized across the league in the super bowl,
- 19:04Speaker 1: the Seahawks, how did the Seahawks eventually break through offensively?
- 19:08Speaker 1: It was two tight end sets and handing the ball
- 19:11Speaker 1: off to Kenneth.
- 19:12Speaker 3: Defensively. What gave the Patriots fits blitzing? And I'm not
- 19:15Speaker 3: saying he's these players, but blitzing Devin Witherspoon and Nick
- 19:18Speaker 3: even worry from the spot that you're describing.
- 19:20Speaker 1: So I think just looking at the Seahawks offense for
- 19:24Speaker 1: a second in the Superbowl, they played 25 snaps in
- 19:28Speaker 1: 12 personnel, two tight ends on the field. Their success
- 19:32Speaker 1: rate in 12 personnel is 40%. Their play success rate
- 19:35Speaker 1: when they were in 11 personnel, three wide receiver, their
- 19:38Speaker 1: play success rate dropped to 29%. So the Patriots defense
- 19:42Speaker 1: was winning when the Seahawks were in three wide receiver.
- 19:44Speaker 1: So what did the Seahawks do? They put multiple tight
- 19:47Speaker 1: ends on the field. They started running the football and
- 19:49Speaker 1: they started featuring the tight ends in the passing game.
- 19:52Speaker 7: Why?
- 19:52Speaker 1: Because the Patriots were playing three corner nickel. They were
- 19:55Speaker 1: playing standard three corner nickel, which was the base of
- 19:58Speaker 1: their defense all year last year. It was Christian Gonzalez,
- 20:01Speaker 1: Carlton Davis, Marcus Jones, Craig Woodson, Jalen Hawkins. Now just
- 20:05Speaker 1: take Hawkins out and put Bayard in. It was, that
- 20:08Speaker 1: was the group, those five guys. And the one Achilles
- 20:13Speaker 1: heel of that type of defense and playing that much
- 20:15Speaker 1: three quarter nickel, especially when your nickel is Marcus Jones,
- 20:19Speaker 1: who we all love, but it's just smaller. That's just the,
- 20:22Speaker 1: it's just physics. He's just a smaller guy that all the,
- 20:26Speaker 1: the Achilles heel of all of that is teams that
- 20:29Speaker 1: can put big personnel on the field offensively, and can
- 20:32Speaker 1: run the football at you. With a guy like Jalen Reed,
- 20:36Speaker 1: in theory, and again, this is just theoretical more than
- 20:38Speaker 1: it is real tangible, but in theory, Jalen Reed can
- 20:43Speaker 1: be a... bigger stouter nickel than a guy like Marcus Jones,
- 20:49Speaker 1: but you're not giving up all of the coverage. He's
- 20:53Speaker 1: not a linebacker.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Right?
- 20:55Speaker 1: So I love the role. I've been pounding the table
- 20:58Speaker 1: for them to play more three safety and getting somebody
- 21:01Speaker 1: that could play more three safety. I thought it might
- 21:04Speaker 1: be Mike Brown. It's not going to be Mike Brown.
- 21:07Speaker 1: I then thought maybe, okay, what if you put John
- 21:10Speaker 1: Saunders in the deep part of the field and you
- 21:12Speaker 1: let Craig Woodson play the nickel, right? And you kind
- 21:15Speaker 1: of move it around that way, kind of get there
- 21:17Speaker 1: in more of a backwards way. Doesn't feel like they
- 21:20Speaker 1: think John Saunders is pushing as much as we do.
- 21:24Speaker 3: But even if he does, like they're going to keep four, right?
- 21:26Speaker 2: Yes.
- 21:28Speaker 3: So John Saunders is your backup deep safety.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Yes.
- 21:31Speaker 1: He's like in a perfect world. I think he's like
- 21:34Speaker 1: Daron Harmon.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Right.
- 21:35Speaker 3: Like if you lose, I don't think John Saunders is
- 21:38Speaker 3: part of this equation.
- 21:39Speaker 1: Not exactly.
- 21:40Speaker 3: If you lose Kevin Bayard, you're not putting Jalen Reed
- 21:44Speaker 3: back there.
- 21:45Speaker 1: No, he's his own type of player.
- 21:47Speaker 3: Honestly, the guys that I think it impacts the most
- 21:50Speaker 3: on the roster in terms of roster chance are that
- 21:53Speaker 3: group of Charles Woods, Karan Pranti, Kendall Vildorff.
- 21:56Speaker 2: At corner. Yeah.
- 21:57Speaker 1: So I think it impacts guys like Del Pettis and
- 22:00Speaker 1: Mike Brown.
- 22:00Speaker 3: So Del Pettis... I honestly just kind of don't even
- 22:03Speaker 3: have Brown on the bubble at this point, if I'm
- 22:04Speaker 3: being honest. That's fair. Pettis is on the list, too.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Yep.
- 22:08Speaker 3: I just look at it as... Who's their backup slot
- 22:12Speaker 3: corner right now? For all we've talked about, the third
- 22:16Speaker 3: boundary corner..
- 22:17Speaker 1: Charles Woods has probably played that the most, but now
- 22:19Speaker 1: it's probably Jalen Reed.
- 22:21Speaker 3: And also, Charles Woods is also your top backup boundary guy.
- 22:24Speaker 2: Right. So..
- 22:25Speaker 3: If he's both, you'd have to carry another corner, and
- 22:28Speaker 3: they still might keep Vildor or Prunty anyway, but now
- 22:32Speaker 3: he gives you some more flexibility in the slot, some
- 22:34Speaker 3: more depth in the slot that you didn't have, and
- 22:36Speaker 3: maybe that keeps you keeping a corner. If we're going
- 22:39Speaker 3: to go really nuts, and maybe I'm getting a little
- 22:41Speaker 3: out over my skis here, Evan, but does he, because
- 22:44Speaker 3: he's going to play special teams too, play a lot
- 22:46Speaker 3: of special teams for Texas, the linebacker depth really isn't there.
- 22:50Speaker 3: Does he maybe save them from keeping that fifth linebacker?
- 22:54Speaker 3: And is it, you know, does he take Khalil Jacobs
- 22:56Speaker 3: spot or KJ Britt spot or Chad Moomins spot and
- 22:58Speaker 3: on the OBizer spot and that, you know, key saves
- 23:03Speaker 3: you a spot for, you might have to keep 10
- 23:04Speaker 3: offensive linemen, depending on what's happening with Marcus Bryant and
- 23:07Speaker 3: Ben Brown. And I think it's more spread out over
- 23:12Speaker 3: the depth chart than just he's on this guy's off.
- 23:14Speaker 3: Pettis is a part of it too. I don't think
- 23:17Speaker 3: he impacts John Saunders a ton in terms of the roster,
- 23:21Speaker 3: but I think it's, There's, you know, maybe guys battling
- 23:25Speaker 3: for the last depth spot at a few positions that
- 23:28Speaker 3: you can now just fire right where we have Jalen Reed.
- 23:31Speaker 3: We maybe don't need to keep this guy.
- 23:32Speaker 2: So..
- 23:33Speaker 1: I love the idea of the player. I love the
- 23:35Speaker 1: role that they probably have in mind for him. There's
- 23:38Speaker 1: a lot of guys around the league that play that
- 23:40Speaker 1: safety nickel position that are really good players. His teammate
- 23:44Speaker 1: in Houston, Jalen Petrie, is one of the best, I
- 23:47Speaker 1: would say. He's a little bit bigger than Petrie, but
- 23:51Speaker 1: I think the Texans drafted him thinking that they were
- 23:53Speaker 1: going to be kind of... redundant type of skill sets
- 23:56Speaker 1: that they could back up Petrie, who does play a
- 23:58Speaker 1: very physical car crash kind of position and gets hurt
- 24:01Speaker 1: every once in a while. You know, the other guy
- 24:04Speaker 1: that he reminds me of that ironically is also on
- 24:06Speaker 1: Houston now is CJ Gardner Johnson, like similar kind of
- 24:10Speaker 1: player like that. He's not Nick Eamon Worry. Nick Eamon
- 24:13Speaker 1: Worry is much bigger.
- 24:14Speaker 3: I mean, that's going to get thrown at Eamon Worry.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Similar roles, but..
- 24:18Speaker 3: Why can't I think of his name for the Chargers?
- 24:20Speaker 3: Derwin James.
- 24:20Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Not close to as thick and as big
- 24:24Speaker 1: as those guys.
- 24:24Speaker 3: But the role's the same in theory.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Yeah, so it's a role that's becoming a lot more
- 24:29Speaker 1: popular across the league. I love the idea of them
- 24:32Speaker 1: being able to be in a bigger nickel or even
- 24:35Speaker 1: a three-safety dime package. with him on the field. It
- 24:39Speaker 1: allows you to, you know, he can cover tight ends.
- 24:42Speaker 1: He can cover backs out of the backfield, like dynamic
- 24:44Speaker 1: pass catching backs. I would not necessarily suggest him covering
- 24:48Speaker 1: slot receivers. He's done it.
- 24:50Speaker 3: He's not like a big slot.
- 24:51Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 24:52Speaker 1: I haven't loved the tape that I, that I saw.
- 24:54Speaker 3: I didn't cover digs in the playoffs last year. Didn't he?
- 24:56Speaker 1: He, unlike if like, he kind of got there and
- 24:59Speaker 1: zone and stuff like that. He, he had some man
- 25:02Speaker 1: matchups against Cleo Shakir in that Buffalo game that went
- 25:04Speaker 1: kind of rough. So I wouldn't necessarily say that that's
- 25:09Speaker 1: a strength of his, but it's something that he could
- 25:11Speaker 1: possibly do.
- 25:11Speaker 3: You're facing 12 personnel. Like you don't have a slot receiver, right?
- 25:14Speaker 1: So I, this is a, the player type is something
- 25:18Speaker 1: that I have really been jonesing for them to have now.
- 25:22Speaker 3: And I'll add one more too.
- 25:24Speaker 8: Yep.
- 25:24Speaker 3: He's, They have him for three years, including... He was
- 25:28Speaker 3: drafted last year, so they still have him under contract
- 25:30Speaker 3: for three years, including this one. Plenty of team control.
- 25:33Speaker 3: This is not a rental for a rental. They got, like,
- 25:35Speaker 3: a guy that should be here for the long term.
- 25:37Speaker 1: So I probably... too enthusiastic about him right now based
- 25:43Speaker 1: off of what he's done in the NFL. Uh, but
- 25:46Speaker 1: I think it's more for me, the excitement is coming
- 25:48Speaker 1: from the role that he could possibly play for this
- 25:51Speaker 1: team versus it's.
- 25:52Speaker 3: The idea of it.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:53Speaker 1: And I, so I, I think that that's a big thing.
- 25:56Speaker 1: I also just keep on harping on, we have, uh,
- 26:00Speaker 1: recycled on this show of flavor of the week. Third
- 26:03Speaker 1: safeties since the spring, Mike Brown, John Saunders, uh, whoever
- 26:08Speaker 1: it may be. And they just haven't found anybody that sticks.
- 26:12Speaker 1: So I think that he's got value in terms of
- 26:15Speaker 1: his versatility and what he can bring to that secondary.
- 26:18Speaker 1: That's a little bit different. than Bayard and Woodson. And
- 26:21Speaker 1: like I said earlier, I kind of feel like he's
- 26:25Speaker 1: depth at two different positions in a way, because instead
- 26:28Speaker 1: of playing a third linebacker a lot, you're probably going
- 26:32Speaker 1: to play Jalen Reed in the box some more than
- 26:35Speaker 1: what you were going to do with the third linebacker.
- 26:38Speaker 1: And so in, in some ways it's kind of like
- 26:40Speaker 1: reinforcements for that, both of those spots. So I, I
- 26:44Speaker 1: really liked the idea of the trade. Let's see if
- 26:46Speaker 1: the player can, can realize the potential.
- 26:48Speaker 3: Right.
- 26:49Speaker 1: At Penn state. I thought he was, I thought he
- 26:51Speaker 1: was under drafted. Like I thought he should have gone
- 26:54Speaker 1: earlier than the six round pick. I thought he was
- 26:56Speaker 1: going to go in like the fourth or fifth round.
- 26:58Speaker 1: When I looked back last night at where I had him,
- 27:00Speaker 1: I ended up going in the sixth round and, So
- 27:03Speaker 1: we'll see. It's a, it's a fun player to play
- 27:05Speaker 1: with though, for Zach core and Mike Rabel. And I
- 27:08Speaker 1: like the, that they're thinking this way that they want
- 27:11Speaker 1: to get three safety, you know, centric and be able
- 27:14Speaker 1: to do that sort of thing. So, you know, one last,
- 27:17Speaker 1: like kind of comp, if you're not as familiar with
- 27:20Speaker 1: some of those other guys. it's basically what the Patriots
- 27:23Speaker 1: used to do with Patrick Chung. Like it's the same
- 27:26Speaker 1: kind of thing, you know, as Chung on the tight
- 27:29Speaker 1: end in the box, sometimes in the slot as well,
- 27:32Speaker 1: it was Devin McCourty and Duran Harmon in the deep
- 27:34Speaker 1: part of the field. That's going to be Craig Woodson
- 27:36Speaker 1: and Kevin Bayard. And hopefully Jalen Reed is going to
- 27:39Speaker 1: be the guy playing near the football in the box.
- 27:42Speaker 1: So exciting that they have this player. Now we'll see
- 27:46Speaker 1: if Jalen Reed, uh, can live up to it and
- 27:49Speaker 1: can develop into that kind of guy. That's more of
- 27:51Speaker 1: a regular contributor, but I'm hearing, and I know I'm
- 27:54Speaker 1: going to argue with, with Paul about this on PU.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Cause we talked about it off the air. I'm hearing
- 27:59Speaker 1: a lot of, the Patriots traded Keishon booty for a
- 28:02Speaker 1: special teamer. And I personally think that that's selling Jalen
- 28:05Speaker 1: Reed short. I think he's a better player than that.
- 28:07Speaker 3: I mean, he's going to play special teams, but Del Pettis.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Is a special teamer and this is not a knock
- 28:11Speaker 1: on Del Pettis, but Del Pettis is a special teamer.
- 28:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:14Speaker 1: You know, those are the types of guys that you see.
- 28:16Speaker 1: If Chad Mooma makes this roster, he's going to make
- 28:18Speaker 1: the roster mostly to cover kicks. Like that's going to
- 28:21Speaker 1: be his role on this team. I think Jalen Reed is,
- 28:24Speaker 1: showed last year with the Texans, even though it was
- 28:26Speaker 1: limited sample size, that he can play on defense and
- 28:30Speaker 1: that this can be a true nickel or dime backer
- 28:32Speaker 1: that can play in packages up for you on defense.
- 28:35Speaker 1: Last thing, just to put a bow on this whole discussion,
- 28:38Speaker 1: and then we'll get into some of the other stuff.
- 28:40Speaker 1: that we've seen. That's not Keishon booty trade related. I
- 28:44Speaker 1: just want to break down where they're at at wide
- 28:45Speaker 1: receiver here now. So obviously AJ Brown, Romeo Dobbs, pop
- 28:50Speaker 1: Douglas has been pretty consistently the top three with, with
- 28:53Speaker 1: Douglas in the slot. I also think that people are
- 28:57Speaker 1: sort of forgetting that Matt Collins was basically had the
- 29:00Speaker 1: same production as Keishon booty last year in this offense.
- 29:04Speaker 1: And then Kyle Williams, who is, was on my ups
- 29:07Speaker 1: and three up, three down when we get to that
- 29:10Speaker 1: in the second hour of the show. you, you all,
- 29:14Speaker 1: everybody wants Kyle Williams to develop and see what they
- 29:16Speaker 1: have with him. Well, he's got to play. If he's
- 29:19Speaker 1: going to develop, I, I, I just feel like they
- 29:21Speaker 1: have enough there. Plenty, honestly, at receiver, they have a backup.
- 29:26Speaker 1: They have two backups that can play base receiver snaps
- 29:30Speaker 1: and Kyle Williams and Matt Collins. If AJ Brown or
- 29:33Speaker 1: Romeo Dobbs goes down, you know, this is, it was
- 29:36Speaker 1: an extra added layer of depth. I'm excited to see
- 29:39Speaker 1: if Kyle will can step into a bigger role is
- 29:42Speaker 1: Kyle Williams, a guy. And I, you know, we've talked
- 29:45Speaker 1: about this before is Kyle Williams, a guy that can
- 29:47Speaker 1: catch 25 passes for 500 yards or 30 passes for
- 29:50Speaker 1: 500 yards. Just like Keishon booty.
- 29:53Speaker 3: You'd hope so.
- 29:53Speaker 1: An average 16, 17 yards of catch. Cause they're all, uh,
- 29:56Speaker 1: 40 yard bombs down the field. You know, like that,
- 30:00Speaker 1: that's the type of guy that you're hoping that Kyle
- 30:02Speaker 1: Williams is going to turn into. So I think that
- 30:05Speaker 1: they have plenty at that receiver position. And this probably
- 30:07Speaker 1: means Efton Chisholm sticks around as well as a backup
- 30:10Speaker 1: slot too.
- 30:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 30:12Speaker 3: I mean, they're going to, I don't think you're going
- 30:14Speaker 3: to cut another guy. Now you're probably going to stay
- 30:15Speaker 3: at six, but everybody kind of slots into their role.
- 30:18Speaker 3: And I think you laid it out. Well, Matt Collins
- 30:20Speaker 3: is going to be as involved as he was last year,
- 30:22Speaker 3: which I think some people miss just how involved he was.
- 30:26Speaker 3: You hope for more from Kyle Williams, especially as that
- 30:29Speaker 3: downfield threat that Keishon Booty was. And then everybody else,
- 30:32Speaker 3: you know, we'll see what happens with Brown and Dobbs.
- 30:35Speaker 3: Everybody else is kind of in the role they were
- 30:36Speaker 3: in last year.
- 30:37Speaker 2: Yep.
- 30:38Speaker 1: So I really feel like they're still okay at receiver.
- 30:42Speaker 1: The positions that they aren't okay at, I want to
- 30:46Speaker 1: get to now. So this was the exercise I had
- 30:49Speaker 1: planned originally for the top of the show until... this
- 30:53Speaker 1: news came last night with Keishon booty. So I mentioned
- 30:56Speaker 1: it earlier, you know, the money quote from Rabel. I
- 30:58Speaker 1: don't think we have a very deep team from the
- 31:01Speaker 1: game the other night. So what I wanted to do
- 31:03Speaker 1: is I wanted to break up the roster by position
- 31:06Speaker 1: and just what areas of the roster do we feel
- 31:08Speaker 1: like they have depth and are good with depth and
- 31:11Speaker 1: what areas of the roster are they still too thin?
- 31:14Speaker 1: So now we can cross safety off of the still
- 31:16Speaker 1: too thin, I think.
- 31:17Speaker 2: Right?
- 31:18Speaker 1: I think that's on the good side, just to use
- 31:19Speaker 1: an example. So I have one, two, three, four, five,
- 31:23Speaker 1: six positions where I think they have..
- 31:25Speaker 3: I thought we were just going to go position by position.
- 31:28Speaker 1: I kind of broke them up already.
- 31:30Speaker 3: Okay.
- 31:30Speaker 1: I put them in buckets. Good, bad.
- 31:33Speaker 3: Okay.
- 31:33Speaker 1: Very simple.
- 31:34Speaker 3: I thought we were just going to do like quarterback,
- 31:35Speaker 3: running back, receiver.
- 31:36Speaker 1: Well, we kind of are.
- 31:37Speaker 2: Okay. So..
- 31:40Speaker 1: In terms of good depth on the team.
- 31:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:42Speaker 1: I think I just said I have six.
- 31:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:44Speaker 1: Position groups. Quarterback.
- 31:46Speaker 3: Quarterback's its own thing. Like, nobody really has good depth
- 31:49Speaker 3: at quarterback.
- 31:49Speaker 1: They have fine depth at quarterback.
- 31:50Speaker 3: I mean, they're fine, but it's... They have the MVP runner-up.
- 31:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:53Speaker 1: DeVito's a backup that's played in the league and started
- 31:56Speaker 1: games in the league. And when we got... Well, did
- 31:59Speaker 1: you see that they... It was the fourth quarter of
- 32:02Speaker 1: a preseason game, but hey, look. He put some good
- 32:04Speaker 1: tape out there in the second half of a preseason game,
- 32:07Speaker 1: so good for him.
- 32:07Speaker 3: It was ESPN or somebody did, like, the... depth rankings
- 32:11Speaker 3: for all 32 teams at quarterback. And they had the
- 32:14Speaker 3: Patriots like 11th. Cause they didn't love Tommy DeVito, but like.
- 32:17Speaker 1: I don't, yeah. I mean, Tommy DeVito is not crazy
- 32:20Speaker 1: good or anything, but if Tommy DeVito had to.
- 32:22Speaker 3: Play, he does a fine backup, but it's, I think
- 32:25Speaker 3: depth at quarterback is a weird conversation because.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Okay, well we don't have to get bogged down by
- 32:30Speaker 1: the semantics of death.
- 32:31Speaker 2: No.
- 32:31Speaker 3: Cause that list annoyed me. If you have a really
- 32:33Speaker 3: good start and you lose them, it's not worth having
- 32:36Speaker 3: the caliber of backup that would replace that guy. Because
- 32:40Speaker 3: if you have a quarterback that good, you should be
- 32:42Speaker 3: maximizing your roster. And just a backup quarterback is not
- 32:46Speaker 3: going to do that. So, okay, you have a pretty
- 32:48Speaker 3: steep drop-off. If you don't have a steep drop-off from
- 32:51Speaker 3: your starter, your backup, you're the Minnesota Vikings. You're the
- 32:57Speaker 3: Minnesota Vikings with J.J. McCarthy and Kyler. Congratulations. If you
- 33:01Speaker 3: have two quarterbacks, you have none.
- 33:03Speaker 1: I don't care about quarterbacks. My take on backup quarterbacks is,
- 33:08Speaker 1: I always look at backup quarterbacks as like, if your
- 33:11Speaker 1: starter had to miss two games, can you win in
- 33:15Speaker 1: the meantime so that when your starter comes back, and
- 33:18Speaker 1: I think the real best example, recent example, is our
- 33:23Speaker 1: guy Mac Jones last year for the Niners. He came
- 33:26Speaker 1: in with the Niners, kept their season afloat, and then
- 33:29Speaker 1: when Brock Purdy came back, they still had a season.
- 33:32Speaker 2: Right.
- 33:33Speaker 3: And I think Tommy DeVito's not Mac Jones, but if
- 33:35Speaker 3: he needs to win a game or two, they could
- 33:38Speaker 3: do a lot worse.
- 33:39Speaker 1: It just, no team that has a quarterback as good
- 33:42Speaker 1: as Drake may, it's going to survive losing Drake May
- 33:46Speaker 1: for a season. Like if he has to miss the
- 33:48Speaker 1: entire year for something or God forbid, knock on wood,
- 33:51Speaker 1: then they're not going to, they're not going to have
- 33:53Speaker 1: a good year. Like this isn't Matt Castle in oh eight, right?
- 33:56Speaker 1: Like this isn't, that's not going to happen. But if
- 33:59Speaker 1: Drake may has to miss two games, a game, you know,
- 34:02Speaker 1: something like that, I think Tommy DeVito can keep them afloat.
- 34:06Speaker 1: So yeah, I think they have enough there. They can
- 34:09Speaker 1: devise a game plan and Josh McDaniels can come up
- 34:11Speaker 1: with a game plan to win a game with Tommy DeVito.
- 34:14Speaker 1: I believe that.
- 34:15Speaker 2: Sure. Yeah.
- 34:16Speaker 1: Next position. I still think their running back depth is fine.
- 34:22Speaker 1: I still feel pretty good about it. They have two solid,
- 34:26Speaker 1: really good backs in Ramondre Stevenson and Travion Henderson at
- 34:29Speaker 1: the top. whether it's land layers in jam Miller, Hassan
- 34:33Speaker 1: Haskins is the third guy. I don't feel great about it,
- 34:36Speaker 1: but when you have two guys like Ramond Ray and Henderson,
- 34:40Speaker 1: I think you have pretty decent running back depth. Like
- 34:42Speaker 1: those are two guys that could go for a thousand
- 34:44Speaker 1: yards in a season. I feel pretty okay there. I
- 34:49Speaker 1: still feel we talked about it just now. I still
- 34:52Speaker 1: feel they're good at wide receiver. I think they have
- 34:54Speaker 1: plenty of depth of wide receiver still.
- 34:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:58Speaker 1: Safety cross that one off now. The one thing that
- 35:02Speaker 1: I feel like they're good with depth here, I don't
- 35:05Speaker 1: know how you feel about it, is offensive tackle. It's
- 35:09Speaker 1: a one spot on the line on either side of
- 35:11Speaker 1: the ball.
- 35:11Speaker 3: Where are they at with Marcus Bryant? If Marcus Bryant's
- 35:14Speaker 3: good to go for week one, they're okay.
- 35:16Speaker 1: I think they have, if Marcus Bryan is assuming that
- 35:19Speaker 1: that's not like a severe season ender, I think they
- 35:22Speaker 1: have four tackles that I feel okay about in that spot.
- 35:27Speaker 1: Caleb Luma has had a rough preseason. He's had a
- 35:29Speaker 1: rough rookie camp, but he's still a first round pick
- 35:32Speaker 1: that's upside in talent and ability. If you just look
- 35:35Speaker 1: at the four tackles that other teams have and the
- 35:38Speaker 1: fourth versus the verse for tackles, the Patriots have, I
- 35:42Speaker 1: would venture to say the Patriots are in the top
- 35:44Speaker 1: half of the league of tackle depth. It's not a
- 35:45Speaker 1: deep position across the league. So it's relative to, to
- 35:50Speaker 1: the fact that the rest of the league, nobody has
- 35:52Speaker 1: four good tackles on their roster size. Maybe the Eagles,
- 35:57Speaker 1: they might have four good ones. So quarterback running back
- 36:01Speaker 1: wide receiver, safety tackle. And my last one here, when
- 36:06Speaker 1: I put something in parentheses, I'll tell you in a second.
- 36:08Speaker 2: Okay.
- 36:09Speaker 1: Punter.
- 36:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 36:11Speaker 1: They have depth at punter, Alex. This is your moment.
- 36:14Speaker 3: It's not, well, that's not really what you want.
- 36:18Speaker 1: You'd rather you have three punters on the roster. Cause
- 36:21Speaker 1: didn't you hear Baron Morton punted?
- 36:23Speaker 3: Although in, in, if he's the emergency third quarterback, he
- 36:27Speaker 3: can't come in and do that. So I don't know
- 36:28Speaker 3: how it would ever happen, but yeah, I suppose they do.
- 36:32Speaker 3: Although Morton could be better. No, it sucks. Because Ravel
- 36:37Speaker 3: said yesterday, Behringer was having a really good summer. You
- 36:41Speaker 3: were as much as you want to deny it.
- 36:42Speaker 1: You were right.
- 36:43Speaker 3: Behringer was having a really good summer. So you hope
- 36:45Speaker 3: this doesn't derail him too much. Matt Hawk is, I mean,
- 36:49Speaker 3: he's a professional backup. We were kind of, Joking the
- 36:52Speaker 3: other day when they signed him that he's been on,
- 36:55Speaker 3: I think, 10 teams in like five years or something.
- 36:57Speaker 1: As punters do.
- 36:58Speaker 3: Right, because nobody really carries a backup kicker, backup punter.
- 37:01Speaker 3: So if you need a backup, there's just these guys
- 37:03Speaker 3: that are free agents that bounce from team to team
- 37:05Speaker 3: as a team needs one. And they'll play for like
- 37:07Speaker 3: three or four teams in a year, a kicker and punter.
- 37:09Speaker 3: So he's one of those guys. He actually had a
- 37:11Speaker 3: pretty good year for the Cardinals last year. He played
- 37:12Speaker 3: in seven games. But I wanted to see Beringer take
- 37:16Speaker 3: that momentum from the summer into the season. Hopefully this
- 37:19Speaker 3: is a short-term thing. Vrabel didn't say anything about week one.
- 37:22Speaker 3: None of the reports have said anything about week one.
- 37:25Speaker 3: I wonder if they just needed a punter to get
- 37:28Speaker 3: through camp. And this is kind of a, hey, we
- 37:30Speaker 3: don't want to stress you. We'll let you rest for
- 37:32Speaker 3: a week. And I don't know, maybe I'm being unrealistic.
- 37:35Speaker 1: That's what my hope is, is that throwing Morton out
- 37:40Speaker 1: there on Thursday night against the Browns, even though it
- 37:43Speaker 1: doesn't mean anything in terms of the result of the game.
- 37:45Speaker 6: Right.
- 37:46Speaker 1: It's not really fair to Morton to do that to
- 37:48Speaker 1: him again.
- 37:48Speaker 3: And he's probably going to play most of that game
- 37:51Speaker 3: at quarterback.
- 37:51Speaker 1: Yeah, so they have this week and next before they
- 37:54Speaker 1: really ramp it up for Seattle. Maybe that's the thought
- 37:58Speaker 1: process there is, hey, let's get through the game on
- 38:01Speaker 1: Thursday night. Let's get through these couple weeks of practice
- 38:04Speaker 1: before we get into a regular season week. And let's
- 38:07Speaker 1: not make Barron Morton pull double duty in practice and
- 38:10Speaker 1: be the third quarterback and the punter. I don't think
- 38:13Speaker 1: that's totally fair to him. So my guess is that
- 38:16Speaker 1: Matt Hack is here just to get them through the
- 38:19Speaker 1: next two weeks.
- 38:20Speaker 3: That's what I'm hoping.
- 38:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:22Speaker 1: But hey, they have three punters on the roster right now.
- 38:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:25Speaker 1: That's just a fact. So that's depth.
- 38:27Speaker 3: Well, couldn't we have said that when Brady was here
- 38:29Speaker 3: that they had two?
- 38:30Speaker 1: So this bothered me. Someone, well, Brady did it. Brady
- 38:35Speaker 1: pooch punted from the shotgun. That's not the same thing.
- 38:38Speaker 3: Although he did it very well.
- 38:39Speaker 1: It's not just a little different. It's a lot different.
- 38:41Speaker 3: He did it very well.
- 38:42Speaker 1: Yes, but he wasn't standing 15 yards behind a long
- 38:46Speaker 1: snapper and getting a live rush.
- 38:48Speaker 3: Right.
- 38:49Speaker 1: That's a totally different thing.
- 38:51Speaker 3: But can I use this opportunity to say, can we
- 38:53Speaker 3: bring back the pooch punt? And I understand it only
- 38:55Speaker 3: applies in very specific scenarios, but..
- 38:58Speaker 1: Drake May did it in college.
- 39:00Speaker 3: And he was very good at it.
- 39:01Speaker 1: Yeah, he did it in college.
- 39:02Speaker 3: Sneaky, effective play. They had like one or two chances,
- 39:05Speaker 3: I think, to do it last year, and they didn't
- 39:06Speaker 3: do it.
- 39:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:07Speaker 3: Bring it back. Fun play. Good football play. And you
- 39:10Speaker 3: know what? They're kind of built for it really well.
- 39:13Speaker 3: Kyle Williams and Matt Collins, put them on the outside
- 39:16Speaker 3: as your gunners.
- 39:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:18Speaker 3: That plays. They got an athletic line. Jared Wilson can
- 39:22Speaker 3: get down there.
- 39:23Speaker 1: He did it in college.
- 39:25Speaker 3: In on it.
- 39:25Speaker 1: And like Mike Rabel said yesterday about this when he
- 39:29Speaker 1: was asked about... um, about Morton. the quarterback's the best
- 39:33Speaker 1: athlete on the field. He's the quarterback on the football team.
- 39:36Speaker 1: He's the shortstop on the baseball team. I think Braybill
- 39:39Speaker 1: said he's the shooting guard on the basketball team, right?
- 39:42Speaker 1: Like he's, and that's Drake May. Like Drake May was a,
- 39:44Speaker 1: a really good basketball player too. Like these guys are
- 39:49Speaker 1: really athletic people, quarterbacks, you know? And so I'm sure
- 39:53Speaker 1: Drake May can still punt. I'm sure he can still
- 39:55Speaker 1: bring that out. He obviously did it at North Carolina.
- 39:58Speaker 1: So I'm sure he did it in practice at North Carolina.
- 40:00Speaker 1: They definitely didn't ask him to do that cold, you know,
- 40:04Speaker 1: never punted before in a practice. So quarterback, running back,
- 40:07Speaker 1: wide receiver, tackle, safety, punter. Those are the positions I
- 40:11Speaker 1: have in terms of depth. I still feel pretty good
- 40:15Speaker 1: about them there now, especially with safety with the read trade.
- 40:19Speaker 1: On the other side of it, the areas where I
- 40:21Speaker 1: feel like they need to add depth to the roster still.
- 40:24Speaker 1: I still have tight end on here. I haven't been
- 40:27Speaker 1: crazy about what I've seen from the rookie tight ends
- 40:32Speaker 1: in the joint practices. I don't think Eli Reardon's done much.
- 40:36Speaker 1: I haven't written his number down as often. Now that
- 40:39Speaker 1: the intensity of these practices have ramped up, I'm still
- 40:42Speaker 1: optimistic about Eli Reardon long-term and I still like what
- 40:45Speaker 1: I've seen, but I'm not as fired up about him
- 40:50Speaker 1: as maybe I was a week ago. Yeah. Tanner Arkin
- 40:53Speaker 1: has really struggled in the preseason games. Now I'll give
- 40:56Speaker 1: him an out. He'd, they've been playing them at fullback.
- 40:58Speaker 1: I don't think he's a fullback and he's certainly not
- 41:00Speaker 1: natural at fullback. So maybe that's just a position thing.
- 41:03Speaker 1: And if they put him back as an inline blocker,
- 41:06Speaker 1: he'll settle down. Uh, the fullback tape has been rough
- 41:09Speaker 1: for Tanner Arkin. And that's really it. Like Jack Westover
- 41:13Speaker 1: all of a sudden is getting two reps again. You know,
- 41:16Speaker 1: he's back in the mix maybe as a depth tight
- 41:19Speaker 1: end option. Where do you feel they're at with tight end?
- 41:22Speaker 1: Because I still think I'm still a little bit concerned
- 41:25Speaker 1: about the depth there behind Henry.
- 41:27Speaker 3: I'm not as down on Raritan as you are. I
- 41:30Speaker 3: think for what his role is going to be, he's
- 41:32Speaker 3: shown me. Austin Hooper, like that's probably what he's going
- 41:35Speaker 3: to be this year. You hope a little bit of
- 41:36Speaker 3: an improvement as a blocker from there. I think Arkin's
- 41:40Speaker 3: done enough to earn a roster spot. I also don't
- 41:43Speaker 3: think he's done enough that he's beyond replacing. And maybe,
- 41:45Speaker 3: you know, somebody gets caught somewhere. Some of those veterans
- 41:49Speaker 3: that we were talking about before, if they're still unsigned,
- 41:52Speaker 3: you know, do you just want more experience in that room?
- 41:54Speaker 3: Somebody who's more polished in that room. So I would under, like,
- 41:59Speaker 3: I don't think they're only going to keep two tight ends.
- 42:01Speaker 3: I think they're going to keep three. If it's Arkin,
- 42:04Speaker 3: I get it. I don't think they have to upgrade
- 42:06Speaker 3: from him, but I think it's a place where they
- 42:08Speaker 3: could realistically upgrade. Like you're not going to have to
- 42:11Speaker 3: make a trade to upgrade that spot.
- 42:12Speaker 1: So the interesting thing about Arkin, they clearly want to
- 42:15Speaker 1: have two back runs in their bag. And my guess is,
- 42:18Speaker 1: is that the reason why Arkin's playing so much fullback
- 42:21Speaker 1: in the preseason is because if anything happens to Reggie Gilliam,
- 42:25Speaker 1: they don't want to lose the two back runs.
- 42:27Speaker 6: Right.
- 42:28Speaker 1: So they're trying to see if he can play fullback.
- 42:30Speaker 1: They know he can inline block.
- 42:32Speaker 2: Right.
- 42:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't hold the fullback tape against him.
- 42:35Speaker 1: The fullback tape. It's rough.
- 42:37Speaker 3: But that's not what he's here for.
- 42:38Speaker 1: He's over the skis. He's falling flat on his face.
- 42:41Speaker 3: I mean, maybe this is a little bit of a jump.
- 42:42Speaker 1: I'm not trying to kill the kid.
- 42:44Speaker 3: I know, but isn't that kind of like holding the
- 42:45Speaker 3: punter tape against Baron Morton?
- 42:47Speaker 2: No.
- 42:48Speaker 3: No, but he's not here to play fullback.
- 42:50Speaker 1: Okay. But he might have to, but he, and he
- 42:53Speaker 1: should also still know.
- 42:53Speaker 3: I think if Richard Gilliam got hurt, they'd go get
- 42:56Speaker 3: another fullback.
- 42:56Speaker 1: If they go, if he has to go out to
- 42:57Speaker 1: the second level and block the linebacker, he still should
- 43:00Speaker 1: be able to do that without falling flat on his face. Like,
- 43:04Speaker 1: but I, I hear you. I, my, my positive spin
- 43:08Speaker 1: on the Arkin thing. is that they've already checked the
- 43:11Speaker 1: inline blocking box. They already know he can do that.
- 43:13Speaker 3: Right. So they're trying to see what else he can do.
- 43:16Speaker 3: Which is why, again, I phrase it as, I think
- 43:18Speaker 3: he's done enough to make the team.
- 43:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:20Speaker 3: It's just, you might have a better option out there too.
- 43:24Speaker 1: I oddly feel, tight end's tricky to me because I
- 43:28Speaker 1: feel fine if Henry's healthy. Like I think if Henry's
- 43:31Speaker 1: healthy and Raritan's in that, you know, package role as
- 43:35Speaker 1: Austin Hooper was last year and Arkin is like your
- 43:38Speaker 1: third blocking tight end, maybe he's in a situational package
- 43:41Speaker 1: in terms of short yardage. He's obviously going to play
- 43:44Speaker 1: special teams. Like if that's like his role on game day,
- 43:47Speaker 1: they're fine. If Henry's healthy, if Henry gets hurt, then
- 43:50Speaker 1: they're going to have to get creative and play for
- 43:52Speaker 1: wide receivers. I think, yeah, I think Matt Collins kind
- 43:54Speaker 1: of becomes a pseudo tight end and you're going for
- 43:57Speaker 1: wide receiver. at that point, because I don't think that
- 43:59Speaker 1: you can rely on those two rookies to play like, uh,
- 44:03Speaker 1: which again.
- 44:04Speaker 3: Goes back to, if you have a veteran, you can
- 44:07Speaker 3: bring in instead of Arkin, who's just going to be
- 44:09Speaker 3: a little more stable. Do you do it?
- 44:10Speaker 9: Yep.
- 44:12Speaker 1: Next one here, interior offensive line, maybe one of the
- 44:16Speaker 1: weakest position groups on the team.
- 44:17Speaker 3: So what's crazy is if Ben Brown's healthy and it's
- 44:20Speaker 3: Ben Brown and Ben wrote, and I actually don't hate it.
- 44:22Speaker 3: That just feels far off.
- 44:23Speaker 1: So I thought it's one practice, uh, Van Roen looked
- 44:27Speaker 1: okay yesterday. He held up pretty well in the one-on-ones.
- 44:31Speaker 1: I had him 2-0 against Isaiah Eaton, and he played
- 44:35Speaker 1: all three spots in team, including center, so he was
- 44:38Speaker 1: playing a little bit of center. If Van Roen is
- 44:41Speaker 1: as good as he was last year, then I think
- 44:44Speaker 1: they're okay as him being the top backup, and then
- 44:47Speaker 1: whenever Ben Brown gets back, he's in the mix as
- 44:49Speaker 1: well if they have depth there. I just, like you said,
- 44:52Speaker 1: we're still not fully materialized in there. The good news is,
- 44:57Speaker 1: is that it was Van Roen on the team and
- 44:59Speaker 1: hopefully Ben Brown back at some point, guys like James Hudson,
- 45:04Speaker 1: Makai Butler, Jacob Rizzi, like those guys shouldn't have to play.
- 45:07Speaker 3: Right.
- 45:08Speaker 1: They might not even be on the roster. Those guys
- 45:10Speaker 1: I think are all going to get cut. So I, that's,
- 45:12Speaker 1: I maybe one thing is we're watching a lot of
- 45:16Speaker 1: guys in these preseason games that are really practice squad
- 45:20Speaker 1: players for them, like third and fourth string interior guys.
- 45:23Speaker 1: So I think that their true backups are better than this,
- 45:26Speaker 1: but it's still an area that as of right now
- 45:28Speaker 1: is a question mark. Unless Van Roten's fine. If he's
- 45:31Speaker 1: just the guy he was last year, then they're fine.
- 45:33Speaker 3: Again, if it's Van Roten and Ben Brown, I feel
- 45:36Speaker 3: okay about it. It's just getting there and getting Van
- 45:39Speaker 3: Roten ready and caught up and getting Ben Brown healthy.
- 45:42Speaker 1: Yep. I want to skip that one because I had
- 45:46Speaker 1: to have a longer take on that edge rusher.
- 45:49Speaker 3: I mean, this one is, this is the one spot
- 45:51Speaker 3: where I don't feel great about where they're at at
- 45:53Speaker 3: the top of the depth chart.
- 45:54Speaker 1: I don't think we feel great about where they are anywhere.
- 45:56Speaker 3: So that, that's naturally going to trickle down. You're not
- 45:58Speaker 3: going to say, well, I don't love the starters, but
- 46:00Speaker 3: at least they have to actually, I guess that's what
- 46:01Speaker 3: we said about the Patriots wide receiver room for like
- 46:04Speaker 3: a three or four year window in there. But yeah,
- 46:07Speaker 3: I wish I, Elijah Ponder hasn't taken that jump. We
- 46:09Speaker 3: were hoping to see gay back. It still is very
- 46:12Speaker 3: clearly the, A rookie who's behind, like has the potential,
- 46:15Speaker 3: but doesn't look ready. Nobody from that next group flashed
- 46:19Speaker 3: this summer. Maybe Q Hutchins is making a late push here,
- 46:21Speaker 3: but didn't see it from Swinson. Holmes got hurt as
- 46:25Speaker 3: he started maybe making a push. Lucchetta hasn't done much.
- 46:28Speaker 3: Gaynor hasn't done much.
- 46:29Speaker 1: I think Lucchetta's probably flashed the most out of that group.
- 46:33Speaker 3: Okay.
- 46:34Speaker 1: But I don't think that it's rosterable. Like, I don't
- 46:37Speaker 1: think that it's like, oh, all of a sudden their
- 46:39Speaker 1: edge depth is better because of Jesse Lucchetta. I think
- 46:42Speaker 1: Elijah ponders had some good reps. Like he's had some
- 46:45Speaker 1: good rushes. I like the fact that he beat Jordan,
- 46:48Speaker 1: my Lada and the joint practice last week for a pressure.
- 46:51Speaker 1: That was good to see, but I'm with you like consistently,
- 46:54Speaker 1: this is a three down player. Now we haven't necessarily
- 46:57Speaker 1: seen that. Let's call it spade to spade with Accus.
- 47:00Speaker 1: It's not been good. It just hasn't. I still like
- 47:03Speaker 1: the foundation. I still like the skillset. I still like
- 47:06Speaker 1: the player and the motor and the physicality and the
- 47:08Speaker 1: power that he can bring to it. Markel Bell is
- 47:11Speaker 1: a mountain climber. He is a monster of a man. Uh,
- 47:16Speaker 1: but if your game is power and your game is physicality,
- 47:21Speaker 1: you can't get kicked out like that on the edge
- 47:24Speaker 1: and give up an 18 yard run into your gap.
- 47:26Speaker 1: You just can't do that. You know, like that's, that's
- 47:28Speaker 1: the one thing that Accus needs to be. I'm good
- 47:32Speaker 1: at this. I am good at setting the edge of
- 47:33Speaker 1: the defense. So when you see that in a game
- 47:36Speaker 1: against what is still a backup tackle in Markel Bell,
- 47:40Speaker 1: you are a little bit concerned. I think the pass
- 47:42Speaker 1: rush tape has not been great either. Like he doesn't
- 47:44Speaker 1: have a lot of moves in the bag in the
- 47:46Speaker 1: arsenal right now. I still, long-term, it's kind of how
- 47:50Speaker 1: I feel about Eli Reardon. Long-term, I still like Akis.
- 47:53Speaker 1: I still like the pick, and I still like the
- 47:55Speaker 1: potential of the player. Right now, he looks like he's
- 47:57Speaker 1: drinking out of a fire hose. He just doesn't look
- 47:59Speaker 1: like he's up to speed, and in the speed of
- 48:02Speaker 1: the game, it's too fast for him.
- 48:03Speaker 3: I still think that's maybe just a little bit of
- 48:06Speaker 3: an understatement. It's mental. Like, physically, he looks like he belongs.
- 48:09Speaker 3: I just think he needs to see more football. Again,
- 48:11Speaker 3: he looks like a guy that missed time in the spring.
- 48:14Speaker 1: Yeah. Linebacker. everything behind Robert's playing and Chad and Christian
- 48:20Speaker 1: Ellis is, is worrisome.
- 48:22Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 48:22Speaker 1: That linebacker Chad Mooma. I don't know what's going on
- 48:26Speaker 1: with Chad Mooma in these preseason games. Maybe he's hurt.
- 48:29Speaker 1: You know, maybe that that's what it was. He finally
- 48:31Speaker 1: tapped out at the end of the game. He's been
- 48:32Speaker 1: in and out of practice. Maybe it's injury related. KJ
- 48:36Speaker 1: Brit hits, he comes downhill and he hits people, but
- 48:39Speaker 1: that's it. Like there's nothing really else that he brings
- 48:41Speaker 1: to the table. Uh, Khalil Jacobs and Namdi Obaizor have
- 48:45Speaker 1: had moments, and they're rookies, and they've flashed a little
- 48:48Speaker 1: bit as rookies. Maybe guys that you can keep on
- 48:51Speaker 1: the roster as long-term development type of players. I'm not
- 48:55Speaker 1: sure that if they had to start a game right
- 48:58Speaker 1: now in the NFL, it would go too well. But
- 49:00Speaker 1: I like what I've seen in terms of, yeah, if
- 49:03Speaker 1: you want to keep them as a fifth linebacker, maybe
- 49:05Speaker 1: a healthy scratch on game day's as a rookie for
- 49:08Speaker 1: most of the year plays on special teams. Uh, I'm
- 49:12Speaker 1: good with that. If Robert's playing or Christian Ellis goes down.
- 49:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:17Speaker 1: And they need a backup linebacker to come in and
- 49:19Speaker 1: start like Jack Gibbons did last year, that drop-off right
- 49:23Speaker 1: now feels significant. And I would put Edge and linebacker
- 49:27Speaker 1: as one and two right now in terms of where
- 49:30Speaker 1: you're most concerned about this depth.
- 49:32Speaker 3: And in terms of are they going to add externally,
- 49:34Speaker 3: I think linebackers... the most logical spot, whether it's Shaq Thompson,
- 49:38Speaker 3: whether it's somebody else.
- 49:39Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 49:39Speaker 3: The, the, where they're at in the box right now
- 49:41Speaker 3: is not, there's room to improve.
- 49:44Speaker 1: That, that's why I, I, I sort of had to
- 49:48Speaker 1: take about Jalen Reed that I had, like maybe Jalen
- 49:51Speaker 1: Reed helps out here a little bit. And instead of
- 49:54Speaker 1: relying significantly on a third linebacker, they're actually just using
- 49:58Speaker 1: him in the box and, Yeah. More last one here.
- 50:01Speaker 1: I feel a little bit better about this position. So
- 50:03Speaker 1: I almost moved it up. I still have cornerback, just
- 50:06Speaker 1: some question marks. They're really good preseason game for Kendall Vildor.
- 50:11Speaker 1: I think it was a good preseason game for Quran Pranthi,
- 50:13Speaker 1: maybe not the on ball production, but just covering away
- 50:16Speaker 1: from the ball. I thought he was pretty good. So
- 50:18Speaker 1: those two guys have made a push and I feel
- 50:20Speaker 1: a little bit better about that spot to begin with.
- 50:23Speaker 1: But the one thing I would say about Vildor in
- 50:26Speaker 1: the second joint practice against the Eagles last week on Thursday,
- 50:30Speaker 1: they went right at him in that two minute drill.
- 50:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 50:33Speaker 1: Right at him. And it was completion completion right down
- 50:36Speaker 1: the field. He gave up the touchdown in the end
- 50:39Speaker 1: zone as well on the, on the play that, that
- 50:41Speaker 1: they finally punched it in. So yeah, Yeah, against the
- 50:45Speaker 1: backups in the preseason games, he looked really good. When
- 50:48Speaker 1: he was going up against, like, Wicks and Hollywood Brown
- 50:51Speaker 1: and some of the Eagles frontline guys, it didn't go
- 50:53Speaker 1: so hot. So still a little bit on the fence
- 50:56Speaker 1: there with Kendall Vildor.
- 50:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, he's been better here in the second
- 51:00Speaker 3: half of camp, but it's still not great. Charles Woods
- 51:02Speaker 3: has had his struggles. We'll see where Karan Pranti is.
- 51:05Speaker 3: That's another spot where I wonder if they can make
- 51:07Speaker 3: an external addition.
- 51:08Speaker 1: Yep. Last one here.
- 51:10Speaker 3: Sorry to just add, that is a spot, too, where
- 51:12Speaker 3: it's relatively easier to get somebody kind of up to
- 51:15Speaker 3: speed who comes in cold.
- 51:17Speaker 1: Charles Woods.
- 51:18Speaker 2: Right.
- 51:18Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, it's true. Was he waiver claim last year or.
- 51:21Speaker 1: Trade late waiver claim?
- 51:22Speaker 8: I think. Okay.
- 51:23Speaker 1: Um, last one here. This is probably the most disappointing
- 51:27Speaker 1: one to have on this list for me. Defensive tackle.
- 51:31Speaker 1: I thought defensive tackle was going to be a clear
- 51:33Speaker 1: strength of this team. Obviously, I feel great about the
- 51:36Speaker 1: top of the depth chart. Milton Williams and Christian Barmore.
- 51:39Speaker 1: And I still feel pretty good about Corey Durden. I
- 51:41Speaker 1: think those three guys are, you know, two are legit studs.
- 51:45Speaker 1: And I think Corey Durden is a good rotational player.
- 51:48Speaker 1: The Joshua Farmer, Eric Gregory, Jeremiah Farms, Leonard Taylor group.
- 51:55Speaker 1: I've just been disappointed by the whole group. This summer,
- 51:59Speaker 1: Leonard Taylor had a decent game the other night. Mike
- 52:01Speaker 1: Vrabel pointed him out yesterday. I thought he was pretty good,
- 52:04Speaker 1: especially in the pass rush. But in terms of stopping
- 52:07Speaker 1: the run, I mean, we know what happened in the
- 52:09Speaker 1: first quarter of that preseason game. They're blown off the
- 52:12Speaker 1: ball by the Eagles backups. Time and time again, Will
- 52:15Speaker 1: Shipley ran it down their throats in the practices and
- 52:17Speaker 1: he ran it down their throats in the preseason game
- 52:20Speaker 1: as well. Everything that you saw in the first half
- 52:23Speaker 1: of the preseason game from Will Shipley is exactly what
- 52:25Speaker 1: we saw in the two joint practices when it was
- 52:28Speaker 1: backups against backups from Will Shipley. So that whole group,
- 52:31Speaker 1: I thought I really did. I thought that those guys
- 52:34Speaker 1: were some at least one or two of those guys
- 52:36Speaker 1: was really going to emerge as like a fourth guy
- 52:39Speaker 1: that they could rotate in. Farmer, I think, has been
- 52:42Speaker 1: the best out of that group.
- 52:44Speaker 3: Farmers had a good camp.
- 52:45Speaker 1: It's inconsistent though. And then Leonard Taylor, they seem to
- 52:48Speaker 1: really like, but where are you at with that entire group?
- 52:50Speaker 1: Cause my grade will call the hockey timeout the other
- 52:54Speaker 1: night because that group was getting pushed around so badly.
- 52:56Speaker 3: So basketball timeout, I call it a hockey timeout. Nobody
- 53:00Speaker 3: ever takes timeouts in hockey. No, you never take a
- 53:02Speaker 3: timeout in hockey for that reason. You can't even take
- 53:03Speaker 3: a timeout until play stop.
- 53:04Speaker 1: What do you mean? You take a timeout exactly for
- 53:07Speaker 1: that reason in hockey. When you're getting boat race, you
- 53:09Speaker 1: call a timeout and try to settle them down.
- 53:11Speaker 3: I think that was more of a basketball thing, I guess.
- 53:13Speaker 1: No, but I mean, either way.
- 53:16Speaker 3: All right.
- 53:16Speaker 1: Hockey, basketball timeout, either way.
- 53:18Speaker 3: I'm not as low on them as you are. I
- 53:20Speaker 3: think Farmers had a good camp. I also think there's
- 53:24Speaker 3: something to be said. Like, we're not expecting them to
- 53:26Speaker 3: be starters. They were obviously weren't great in the Eagles game.
- 53:30Speaker 3: The Eagles backup offensive line is probably better than some
- 53:33Speaker 3: teams starting offensive lines.
- 53:34Speaker 2: It is.
- 53:35Speaker 3: So, like, if they were going against defined starters, would
- 53:40Speaker 3: you be as disappointed in their performance? Would you say, oh,
- 53:42Speaker 3: it's backups against starters? Because that's kind of what it was.
- 53:46Speaker 3: The concern against the run is real, but I think
- 53:48Speaker 3: it goes to something that we've talked about, that all
- 53:50Speaker 3: those guys, with the exception of maybe Eric Gregory. Taylor
- 53:53Speaker 3: forms like their pass rushers.
- 53:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 53:55Speaker 3: That's what they are. They're small. They're missing a nose tackle.
- 53:57Speaker 3: We've known this since Tonga left.
- 53:59Speaker 1: I know they're.
- 53:59Speaker 3: Missing a nose.
- 54:00Speaker 1: Cause even like with Corey Durden, who I like as
- 54:02Speaker 1: a player and like in a vacuum, I still am
- 54:06Speaker 1: not totally sold on him being a nose tackle. Like
- 54:09Speaker 1: I still feel like he's best to use over the guard,
- 54:12Speaker 1: you know, as like a pure, like three technique. I
- 54:16Speaker 1: don't know if he's stout enough in, you know, wide
- 54:19Speaker 1: enough in there to be a Tonga one for one
- 54:22Speaker 1: Tonga replacement. So I guess that's also where this kind
- 54:25Speaker 1: of stems from is like, I kind of wanted Durden
- 54:27Speaker 1: to be like a rotational third guy for Barmore and
- 54:30Speaker 1: Williams and more in that kind of role and not
- 54:33Speaker 1: necessarily a pure nose role. And if he doesn't hold
- 54:36Speaker 1: up at the nose, then does that mean Barmore has
- 54:38Speaker 1: to kick inside? And now Barmore is just wearing blocks
- 54:40Speaker 1: all year instead of like, making plays. I don't know.
- 54:43Speaker 1: It just, the Tonga absence was felt this week against
- 54:47Speaker 1: the Eagles. They, they really missed that pure nose.
- 54:50Speaker 3: I don't think it's a lack of debt. I wouldn't
- 54:52Speaker 3: characterize it as a lack of depth. I think it's
- 54:54Speaker 3: like a specifics and maybe this is semantics. It's a
- 54:57Speaker 3: specific position. a specific role that.
- 55:00Speaker 1: They don't have built. You know, to be fair to them,
- 55:02Speaker 1: like they're talking about a lack of depth on the roster.
- 55:05Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 55:06Speaker 1: Maybe like nose tackles are way that you can get
- 55:08Speaker 1: a nose tackle.
- 55:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 55:09Speaker 1: You can get it on drums. You can get a
- 55:12Speaker 1: 330 pound dude to eat blocks in the middle of
- 55:14Speaker 1: your defensive line. Those guys are not super valuable. I mean,
- 55:18Speaker 1: we saw the, the contract that Tonga got.
- 55:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 55:20Speaker 1: Like, it's not like those guys are getting paid a
- 55:23Speaker 1: ton unless you're like Vita Vea. So like you can
- 55:25Speaker 1: go out and find that kind of player this time
- 55:27Speaker 1: of year. So yeah, Maybe something that they can figure out.
- 55:30Speaker 1: All right, let's hit the break. When we come back,
- 55:32Speaker 1: I know you guys have been waiting on hole. We're
- 55:33Speaker 1: going to get to the calls. We're going to get

- 1:00:07Speaker 1: Okay, good.
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: I was like, don't.
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: I don't know how many people miss it on Saturday.
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: It's going to be me and Andy this year.
- 1:00:13Speaker 8: Nice. I love that. I can't wait to call and
- 1:00:16Speaker 8: rag on Big Head, you know?
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: There you go. Yeah, so we will be, it is
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: a week, not this Sunday, next Sunday. I am a
- 1:00:24Speaker 3: little bummed because we don't usually get a season preview,
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: and then the Sunday of the game, but because they're
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: playing on Wednesday, we're going to have to be a
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: busy show.
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:32Speaker 8: And this is going to be a tall task for
- 1:00:34Speaker 8: you guys, but, and if, I mean, if you don't know,
- 1:00:38Speaker 8: you don't know, whatever. I'm like, like you guys, I'm
- 1:00:42Speaker 8: concerned about the edge depth and position and the position
- 1:00:45Speaker 8: as a whole. You know, maybe Mike Brable has a
- 1:00:48Speaker 8: better idea of one Landry's coming back, but, Do you
- 1:00:51Speaker 8: guys know of anybody that's, that's possibly like on the,
- 1:00:54Speaker 8: on roster fringes that are, that's an experienced guy that
- 1:00:58Speaker 8: we might be able to like claim, um, maybe not
- 1:01:01Speaker 8: off waivers, but on cut down days. And I'll take
- 1:01:03Speaker 8: that off.
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: There, guys.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: Yeah. Thanks for the call, Patty. I honestly, there's a
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: lot of teams out there right now that are thin
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: on the edge.
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: Believe it or not.
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: I feel like it's been a really deep position, but
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: there's been some injuries, um, across the league so uh
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: not really like i haven't heard a lot of names
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: like that you would know like household names that are
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: potentially on the outs because a lot of teams have
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: had injuries at those positions in training camp and are
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: holding on to their depth you know carolina you know
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: teams like that so uh we'll see i mean there's
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: always some guys that slip through the cracks i don't
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: know if it's going to be anybody of significance though
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: That's really going to come in here and help the Patriots.
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: But have you heard of any names? Because I haven't.
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: No, I just don't think the Patriots are getting their
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: answer to the edge on waivers. They might be able
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: to add depth, but that's what it's going to be.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: I think the question would be like if it's like
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: a vested veteran that gets cut, that becomes a street
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: free agent more than waivers. Like, I don't know, you know,
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: like a... a guy that's been kicking around the league
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: a little while. Like one of the guys that I
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: was thinking of, and I, they might end up holding
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: onto him in Philadelphia, but like AJ Ebenezer, you know,
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: who's like a depth guy for the Eagles. I think
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: he's probably their fourth rusher, you know, Nolan Smith, Jonathan Grenard,
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: J Alex Hunt, I would say probably their fourth guy.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: Does Philadelphia feel like one of their younger players has
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: popped enough in camp that they want to give him
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: the roster spot and him the opportunity? Just a thought,
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: just looking at some of the teams we've seen here
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: in camp. Nate in Connecticut. What's up, Nate?
- 1:02:33Speaker 11: Hey, can you guys hear me well?
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: Yeah, we got you, Nate.
- 1:02:36Speaker 11: All right, so I got a couple things first. First off,
- 1:02:38Speaker 11: it's going to be my last call for a little while.
- 1:02:41Speaker 11: They're sending me back to school tomorrow.
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: Oh, no, sorry to hear that. I know.
- 1:02:45Speaker 11: Way too early. I'm seeing people start beginning of September,
- 1:02:48Speaker 11: and we're starting at the tail end of August. But anyways,
- 1:02:52Speaker 11: Keishon Booty Trade. Yesterday, I got the notification that he
- 1:02:56Speaker 11: was trading safety Jalen Reed in a draft pick. At first,
- 1:02:59Speaker 11: I didn't specify what draft pick it was.
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: And then later, I hear it's a seventh.
- 1:03:04Speaker 11: And I'm kind of mad about that. I feel like
- 1:03:06Speaker 11: we could have gotten something better than a seventh. And
- 1:03:09Speaker 11: I'm not saying that there's good potential in the seventh
- 1:03:12Speaker 11: round of the draft. I'm just saying, you know, At
- 1:03:15Speaker 11: least the value could have been a little higher. I
- 1:03:19Speaker 11: saw his first touchdown live in person at Gillette, and
- 1:03:22Speaker 11: it was just an electric feeling. I wish him nothing
- 1:03:25Speaker 11: but the best. But, you know, it's really sad to see,
- 1:03:29Speaker 11: which I really thought was one of the pieces to
- 1:03:31Speaker 11: the future, the next dynasty in New England, which has
- 1:03:33Speaker 11: already started. But, yeah, just sad to see him go.
- 1:03:37Speaker 11: Wish him nothing but the best in Houston. Like Patty
- 1:03:39Speaker 11: and Aguam said.
- 1:03:40Speaker 8: I hope he does get paid.
- 1:03:41Speaker 7: He deserves it.
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:03:43Speaker 8: Thank you guys.
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: Thanks for the call, Nate. All fair points. When we
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: all saw the trade yesterday, it was an underwhelming feeling
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: on the return.
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: That's a totally fair point. The one thing that I
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: would just say on it is, again, when I reiterate
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: what I said at the top of the show, the
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: market for him was never as hot as you wanted
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: it to be. No. There was never these big early
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: draft pick compensation offers out there, and the market spoke
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: like the two, the league spoke that this player was
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: not worth, uh, as much as we were hoping for
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: in a trade. Uh, now the other thing I would mention,
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: this is something that I think the league does that
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: I don't like. And I think is a bad way
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: to do business. Teams often have prior feelings about players
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: and they don't depart from their priors. So Keishon booty,
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: just like fans three years ago was valued in the
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: 23 draft as a six round pick. When he comes
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: up in the last year of his rookie contract and
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: he's available via trade, everybody in the league values him
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: at a six round pick. I disagree with it. I
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: think that what you did in the NFL should matter
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: more than sometimes it does. I also, you know, I
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: didn't want to lead with this, but the stuff that's
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: gone on with Keishon booty off the field has contributed
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: to this as well. His ankle injury, you know, has
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: contributed to it a little bit in terms of his
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: draft stock back then. I think it's one of the
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: biggest mistakes that, that personnel evaluators make across the league
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: is saying, well, this is what making their mind up
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: about a player and never wavering from that. So the
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: Texans might benefit from that. They, they might get a
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: player that's worth a lot more than what they gave
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: up for him because they are going to benefit from
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: the fact that the rest of the league said he's
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: still worth a six round pick.
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: And so we'll see if that ends up being the case.
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: I want to do three up, three down. Let's get
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: into it.
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: So this is three up, three down specifically from the
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: Eagles preseason game. Cause we did the show after the
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: joint practice last week, the first day. So this is
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: specifically from the game against the Eagles. Who's your number
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: one up?
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: You know, I don't do them in order. I just
- 1:05:55Speaker 3: kind of, okay.
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: Who's your first on your list?
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: Um, First on my list, if my computer wakes up,
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: go ahead.
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: John Saunders.
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: My guy. Great preseason tape. I thought that, you know,
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: he didn't have any interceptions in the game, but he
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: did have a pass breakup covering the tight end, covered
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: tight ends, played a deep part of the field, played
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: some robber, which is all over the field. Like the
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: boot concept that he just sniffed out from the jump,
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: that was going to be a pick six the other
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: way if Andy Dolan didn't throw that ball into the dirt.
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: It was just... he looked like a guy that was
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: above the rest of the players that were playing on
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: the field. He was moving faster. He was keying into
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: things faster, eyes in the right places, body and, you know,
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: tilt in the right places, all those different things. I
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: don't know if it's going to be enough because of
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: what they just did. You know, they added another safety
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: in Jalen Reed, but I've just loved what I've seen
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: from John Saunders, both preseason tape practice. I don't know
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: what else you could possibly do at this point.
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: I'm, I'm going to, Yeah, so I agree with you.
- 1:06:58Speaker 3: I still think he makes team.
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: As the fourth guy.
- 1:07:01Speaker 3: Backup free safety, backup box safety.
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:07:04Speaker 3: That kind of thing.
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:07:06Speaker 3: My first up, I'm going to do a two for one.
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: Second year receivers. Yeah, I had him on my list too.
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: I thought Williams, I still want to see him fight
- 1:07:16Speaker 3: back to the ball more. A little more on some
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: of those goal balls. He had a chance, but then
- 1:07:19Speaker 3: just a great route off the line on that deep
- 1:07:22Speaker 3: ball that he catches the touchdown. Efton Chisholm, solid night.
- 1:07:25Speaker 3: Not spectacular, but four catches, 45 yards. Did a good
- 1:07:28Speaker 3: job creating after the catch. Ran hard. They're probably both
- 1:07:32Speaker 3: on the team. I mean, I don't think either one's
- 1:07:34Speaker 3: trying to prove that at this point. When I say probably,
- 1:07:36Speaker 3: I mean, like, they should be on the team regardless
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: of what that was, right? But credit to them. I
- 1:07:42Speaker 3: thought it was a good night for that duo.
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: I did as well. I had them both on here
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: as two, and maybe this is also just, you know,
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: post-Kayshaun Booty trade also. They're both going to be here,
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: and they're going to make the team. and I think
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: Kyle Williams can have a role offensively. We'll see Chisholm
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: probably more injury insurance in the slot. Uh, but I
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: think Kyle Williams is going to have a role offensively.
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: I didn't mind the deep ball, uh, as much. I'm
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: not going to fault Kyle Williams for the fact that
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: Tommy DeVito is under thrown him by five yards, two weeks.
- 1:08:12Speaker 3: That's fair.
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: Now, The one that I thought that maybe he could
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: have worked back a little bit more was his first
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: target at the very beginning of the game. He was
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: running a curl, you know, like outside curl and Ringo
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: just jumped it. And I would have liked to have
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: seen him kind of like bend back towards the quarterback
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: a little bit more because Ringo was sitting on it.
- 1:08:33Speaker 3: So, right.
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: You know, get on the other side of Ringo, maybe
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: and fight a little bit more back to the football there.
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: I have now, if he, the fighting back for the
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: football thing was something that Rabel said, and now it's
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: stuck out in everybody's mind from the first preseason game.
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: I thought the first preseason game, Rabel had more of
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: a case because the corner was stacked and he was
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: running right behind him. So if he stops, it becomes
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: a car crash, right? Where he's going to crash into
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: the back of Kyle Williams and you're going to drive.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: PI the one this week. I didn't, I thought the ball,
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: there was no, it wasn't even going to be an
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: underthrown PI situation. The curl may be a little bit, uh,
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: but the separation ability, and I posted a cut up
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: on Twitter of it, you know, four or five routes
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: where he's just open, open down the field. Like, you know,
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: even ones where he wasn't targeted. where he's just running
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: free through the defense. His speed looked different than the
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: other guys on the field, kind of like John Saunders. Chisholm,
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: I really liked the throw in the flat that he
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: broke the tackle and got the first down. The crosser,
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: we know he's got that route in his bag. He's
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: got that ability to run that route. the duck underneath
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: the tackle, pick up the yards after the catch. That
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: was also that, that looked a lot like Julian Edelman.
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: I'm not like Edelman love to do the duck under,
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: you know, let the guy drive by duck under them
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: and break the tackle. I Efton Chisholm. I, he's been
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: watching some Julian Edelman tape. He's clearly, clearly cause he's
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: running the crossing routes exactly the same. And he's running,
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: he's making Edelman moves after the catch. Like it's very
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: obvious to me that he's taking all of these types
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: of things from, from watching Edelman. So yeah, I thought
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: both of those guys did what they needed to do
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: this preseason. to make this Kayshaun Booty trade kind of
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: a thing, you know, like to really make this thing happen.
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: So we both had the rookie, the second year receivers,
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: as you'd say. I had John Saunders, who's next on
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: your list.
- 1:10:28Speaker 3: Lane Larrison. Good game for Lane Larrison. We talked about
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: this before camp, that I thought he ran with more
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: power than some people were giving him credit for.
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: Especially out of the gun.
- 1:10:37Speaker 3: And I think you saw it. You didn't see it
- 1:10:39Speaker 3: as much against the Colts. You saw it in this game,
- 1:10:40Speaker 3: picking up hidden yardage, did his thing in the passing
- 1:10:42Speaker 3: game as well. Now here's where we need to interpret, Evan.
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: So Lane Larson played most of the game. Hassan Haskins
- 1:10:51Speaker 3: saw a limited role, but instead of getting his carries
- 1:10:53Speaker 3: at the end of the fourth quarter, they were all
- 1:10:55Speaker 3: like in their beginning of the second quarter. Mike Vrabel
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: mentioned they weren't playing some of the guys or were
- 1:11:01Speaker 3: limiting playing some of the guys they expect to have
- 1:11:03Speaker 3: on the team. did land Larrison strong performance, put them
- 1:11:06Speaker 3: on the team as third running back, or that they
- 1:11:09Speaker 3: only have him do all of that because they know
- 1:11:11Speaker 3: they're keeping us on Haskins and they didn't want him
- 1:11:12Speaker 3: getting hurt.
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: It's possible. I, whenever Rabel says that a player had
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: a gritty performance that stands out to me, that's always
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: something that like Rabel, I think, I think he just
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: likes guys like that, you know, that are, that are gritty.
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: Like he was the one thing that I would say
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: in land Larrison's favor is is that he's a different
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: kind of back than Hassan Haskins and Jam Miller. If you,
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: if they want to back a third running back, that's
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: truly another, another, between the tackles early down option.
- 1:11:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: If Ramond Ray Stevenson gets hurt and they need a
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: guy to carry the ball 20 times in a game,
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: then that's jam Miller or Hassan Haskins. If they have
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: a role in mind for Larrison, because I think Larrison
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: is different.
- 1:11:56Speaker 3: Larrison's more of a well-rounded.
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: He's a gun back to a little bit of everything.
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: He's a gun back. He's a sub package back. It's
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: a really lazy, easy comparison, but the Rex Burkhead thing
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: does work.
- 1:12:07Speaker 3: And he keeps saying he's like a slightly smaller Brandon Bolden,
- 1:12:09Speaker 3: but okay.
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: Either way, sure. Gun back, sub package back, gun runs.
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: We saw that in the third and fourth down plays.
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: Punch it in on the gun runs. Passing out of
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: the backfield, receiving routes out of the backfield. That's more
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: going to be his game than like we're going to
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: put him in the dot from under center and we're
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: going to hand the ball off to him. I don't
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: think he's got the speed at the line of scrimmage
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: to be that kind of effectively that kind of back.
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: But we've seen whether it's Brandon Bolden, Rex Burkhead, whatever.
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: We've seen the style of back that he is. Josh
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: McDaniels is system to like a glove. The one thing
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: I would say with Larison that's holding him back right now,
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: he did give up two pressures in pass protection. He
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: got run over two times in blitz pickup. So that's
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: one area that guys like Bolden, guys like Burkhead, even
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: guys like James White really developed strongly in blitz pickup.
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: So if you're going to be that kind of player,
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: a sub package player, that's going to play mostly in
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: the passing game. you got to be able to pick
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: up blitzes, but he's more versatile, right?
- 1:13:12Speaker 6: Oh yeah.
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: Like he can run it out of the gun. He
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: can catch balls out of the backfield. Uh, he can
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: return kickoffs. He might be able to cover kicks. So
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: jam Miller and Hassan Haskins can return kickoffs. Uh, but
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: those guys are just bell cow backs. Like they're traditional
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: between the tackles running backs. This is a little different.
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: Like he's a little different type of player to.
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: Your last point. I, or to what you were saying
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: about the pass blocking. Like that's where I wonder, uh,
- 1:13:39Speaker 3: They should be able to get Larson in the practice squad.
- 1:13:41Speaker 3: Do they put Larson on the practice squad, let him
- 1:13:43Speaker 3: keep develop? Haskins starts as the third back, and maybe
- 1:13:45Speaker 3: that changes over the course of the season. But it's
- 1:13:48Speaker 3: going to be one of those two. I don't think
- 1:13:49Speaker 3: Jay Miller's in the mix, and that Jemichael Hasty fumble
- 1:13:51Speaker 3: was pretty bad.
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. That one, I never really thought Jemichael Hasty
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: was in the mix. I always thought that he was
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: a camp body.
- 1:13:57Speaker 3: They really need special teams bodies. Like, it's a sneaky,
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: you talk about depth. They need guys that can play
- 1:14:02Speaker 3: in the kicking game, and he can do that. That's his,
- 1:14:04Speaker 3: if he makes the roster, that's why.
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:14:06Speaker 3: You're ruling out them keeping four running backs?
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: You're completely ruling that out? I don't even know if
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: I want to keep three running backs.
- 1:14:13Speaker 9: I don't.
- 1:14:13Speaker 7: Four.
- 1:14:13Speaker 3: You should keep three.
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:14:16Speaker 3: You want that depth.
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: I think they're at three.
- 1:14:18Speaker 3: I know you can elevate guys from the practice squad,
- 1:14:19Speaker 3: but you can only do that at so many positions
- 1:14:21Speaker 3: and for so many weeks. It's not a full-time fix.
- 1:14:23Speaker 11: No.
- 1:14:23Speaker 3: If they're going to do that, the spot I would
- 1:14:24Speaker 3: do it is on the edge.
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: I'm at three.
- 1:14:28Speaker 3: You are at three? Okay. It was Saunders, the receivers, and..
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: Oh, no, no, no.
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: I'm at three running backs. I have one more up.
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: Three running backs. Last up for me.
- 1:14:37Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: Demetrius crown over thought he was really good in this game.
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: Past protection had a couple of lapses, like wasn't perfect
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: in past pro did have the false start. But the
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: thing that stood out to me the most, he was
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: probably their most effective run blocker. He really moved the
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: line of scrimmage on some of those combinations and double teams.
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: I saw a real power and ability to move bodies
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: off the line of scrimmage. And that is not an
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: Eagles defensive line. That that's any slouches. Even their backups
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: are pretty good on that defensive line. He felt like
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: the one second string Patriot lineman that was really able
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: to move people and uproot people. I'm starting to flirt
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: with the idea. And I, this is maybe getting a
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: little ahead of myself. I kind of thought this way
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: about Marcus Bryant to begin with. Now, Marcus Bryant is hurt.
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: So we'll see if he's healthy enough to do it.
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: If I, if they're going to go tackle eligible and
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: they're going to play six offensive linemen, I really feel
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: like Marcus Brian or Demetrius crown over is a better
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: option right now than Caleb Lomu. That doesn't mean that
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: Caleb Lomu, they're better than Caleb Lomu. And if somebody
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: had to play tackle, I'd probably want it to be
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: Caleb Lomu, but as a sixth offensive lineman, the jumbo
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: tight end, whatever you want to call it. Don't you
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: want somebody that's going to move people? Like that's really
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: going to get on a block and actually push people
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: off the ball. That's not going to be Caleb Lomo.
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: He's not there yet. Physically. He's not developed enough. His
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: body is not developed enough yet. So if they're going
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: to put a six offensive line package on the field
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: with the idea of like, we're coming at you and
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: we're running the ball out of this formation. I think
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: Demetrius crown over right now is a better option than
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: Caleb Lomo.
- 1:16:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I would, I would agree with that. I think
- 1:16:19Speaker 3: Marcus Bryant's still the best option. but agreed. Uh, my
- 1:16:23Speaker 3: third up, this one went way under the radar, which
- 1:16:26Speaker 3: I think is good. This is the guy you want
- 1:16:29Speaker 3: to go under the radar. Andy Borgalis hit all four
- 1:16:31Speaker 3: of his kicks.
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: It's a little, a little helicopter. He may be on
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: the first one.
- 1:16:35Speaker 3: He hit all four of the kicks. Didn't doink any.
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: Oh no.
- 1:16:37Speaker 3: Did he doink one?
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: No, but it's like still some right to left drift
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: to me, but I.
- 1:16:41Speaker 3: He made him, he made him, he made all his kicks.
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:16:44Speaker 3: That's a great sign.
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: He made him.
- 1:16:45Speaker 3: So I am, uh, We're trending a lot more towards, okay,
- 1:16:51Speaker 3: he had a bad week. He moved on.
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: Maybe it was the long snapper. All right. To the downs.
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: We talked a lot about these in the depth conversation,
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: so I don't have to go too deep. Number one
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: for me is Chad Mumma and the linebackers. The first
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: half tape for all the linebackers was really rough. I mean,
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: that was just not good. I don't want to get
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: too deep.
- 1:17:17Speaker 3: Yeah, no, he missed a couple tackles, took some bad
- 1:17:19Speaker 3: angles on my list, too. Not a good game for Chad.
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: You know, reached in the run game, like climbs to
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: the second level, couldn't get off blocks in the run game,
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: missed tackles in space, just all around. Not good. What
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: do you have? Number one.
- 1:17:34Speaker 3: Yeah, that was that was my number.
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: OK, number two, similar theme interior offensive line. James Hudson,
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: Jacob Rizzi, Makai Butler. I hope we don't have to
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: see those guys play an NFL game.
- 1:17:46Speaker 3: The whole second line pass protection was not good. Tommy
- 1:17:48Speaker 3: DeVito is having to run around a lot.
- 1:17:50Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:17:50Speaker 3: Barry Morton was having to run around a lot, kind
- 1:17:52Speaker 3: of across the board. Just not a good look from
- 1:17:54Speaker 3: that backup offensive line.
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: Interior offensive line. Besides Leonard Taylor, I take Leonard Taylor
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: out of this. I thought he had a good game.
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: So did Vrabel backing that up. So farmer Gregory farms,
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: even Isaiah Eaton, I threw in there as well, got
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: pushed around a ton, but not that I expect him
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: to like stand up in the run game very much.
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: But all those guys, I thought struggle. Gregory got reached
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: by the center on that 18 yard run by Shipley
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: early on in the game. I just not, not good
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: enough for many of those guys in terms of how
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: the game started on the defensive line.
- 1:18:28Speaker 3: Yeah. I, again, I, I put some of that to
- 1:18:31Speaker 3: the Eagles backup. Like I didn't realize until we saw it,
- 1:18:33Speaker 3: some of the guys that are on that line, that would,
- 1:18:36Speaker 3: I think that would be the starting line for some teams.
- 1:18:38Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: All three of those interior. I think Michael Morris was
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: the third interior guy all three of those interior guys
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: can play Drew Kendall is the guy that if he
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: shakes free somehow if they don't have room for him
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: I think they're going to but if they don't it's.
- 1:18:54Speaker 3: Him or Cam Juergens probably I don't see them keeping both.
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: And the way that people are talking in Philadelphia, Cam
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: Juergens has really dropped off. Now, he's been better. Oh, no,
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: that's Dickerson. Dickerson's been better, I think, at guard and center.
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: One of them's been better at guard than they have
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: been at center. It's kind of like a Ben Brown situation,
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: but the opposite. But I don't know if Drew Kendall...
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: gets cut. It sounds like he's training towards making the team,
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: but they have a lot of depth on the interior.
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: They have their starters. They have Willie Lampkin. Who's, you know,
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: been a training camp hero. Uh, they have drew Kendall,
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: Michael Morris. If any of those guys get cut, I
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: would not be shocked if the Patriots put a claim
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: in for it for one of those guys.
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:19:35Speaker 3: I mean, it would be an upgrade for sure.
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: Uh, were we on the same page with all three
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: of those? Uh, you have another one.
- 1:19:42Speaker 3: No, my third. Well, I, I kind of split up
- 1:19:44Speaker 3: the offensive line. I said all those ones. I'll say
- 1:19:46Speaker 3: that like, I'm higher on Gabe Axe's performance than most
- 1:19:50Speaker 3: people are, but he had some rough, rough reps in
- 1:19:53Speaker 3: that game.
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: Okay. Let me ask you, let me preface you this
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: way because, well, I have two questions for you on
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: Gabe Axe. One, is this your priors? Because I, that's fair.
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: Like it's one, it's two preseason games. It's his rookie
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: training camp. Just totally throwing out what we thought of
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: him coming into the league is not. Some of it is.
- 1:20:12Speaker 3: Priors plus preseason. you have to acknowledge that he's behind.
- 1:20:15Speaker 3: Like it's not, I feel like people are acting surprised
- 1:20:18Speaker 3: that mentally the game is a little fast for him
- 1:20:21Speaker 3: right now, which maybe that's why I'm not as down
- 1:20:24Speaker 3: because he's kind of doing what I expected. What a
- 1:20:26Speaker 3: guy who missed the entirety of the spring would do.
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: So it's totally fair to say, I'm not going to
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: just throw out what I thought about him coming into
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: the league because of three weeks in training camp. Like
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: that's not fair to him more. And isn't the right
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: way to look at it. My second question is, What
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: did you like about the performance? I, you still just
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: see the, the physical traits I think are still on display.
- 1:20:49Speaker 3: The burst, the raw strength, that kind of thing. The motor,
- 1:20:52Speaker 3: like that's all there. He doesn't look, I think some
- 1:20:54Speaker 3: guys would get discouraged in his spot and you're still
- 1:20:57Speaker 3: seeing the motor and all that. So I like the motor.
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: The motor is there.
- 1:21:00Speaker 3: I mean, I had him on my, you're asking me
- 1:21:01Speaker 3: that I had him on my dad.
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: Well, I mean, you just said you were higher on
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: it than other people.
- 1:21:04Speaker 3: So people, I, cause I, I see people saying like,
- 1:21:06Speaker 3: like they're using these two games to declare him a bust.
- 1:21:09Speaker 3: It's entirely too soon for that.
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: And if we're going to do that with him, then
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: we have to say the same thing about Caleb.
- 1:21:14Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: Like both of those guys have been underwhelming.
- 1:21:16Speaker 3: And I, I think one was been more underwhelming than
- 1:21:18Speaker 3: he has as a first round pick.
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: Probably. I mean, he's drafted.
- 1:21:21Speaker 3: Maybe, maybe that's some of it, but that's just the fact. I,
- 1:21:26Speaker 3: it's way people are writing them off and it's just
- 1:21:28Speaker 3: too soon for that.
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: I think that the one thing I would say about, uh,
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: Accus is just block and play recognition needs to improve.
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: Like he, right.
- 1:21:36Speaker 3: And that's just going to come with more sand, right?
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: Like when they, you know, he's on the front side
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: of that run. Like he knows, needs to know that
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: they're trying to, where they're trying to hit that run
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: in the C gap. And he needs to be able
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: to squeeze that gap. Like that's not, you know, I
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: see a lot of people saying, well, he set the
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: edge and no, he got moved off the edge. He
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: got Markel belt, took him and moved him off the edge.
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: And to me that it's, he's too strong to have
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: that happen just off of pure strength on strength. Like
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: he's too sturdy and strong and big of a dude
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: to get moved off the ball like that. So that's
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: a recognition.
- 1:22:07Speaker 3: So I think some of it is because you saw
- 1:22:09Speaker 3: this at Illinois, right? He sees what he thinks he sees.
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:22:13Speaker 3: And because he has that motor, it's 100% go for it,
- 1:22:17Speaker 3: make the play. And you know what? If you overrun
- 1:22:20Speaker 3: a draw or a screen or a read option in
- 1:22:23Speaker 3: college against like Purdue.
- 1:22:25Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:22:26Speaker 3: He can recover and catch up to produce running back.
- 1:22:29Speaker 3: You can't do that in the NFL. So he just
- 1:22:30Speaker 3: has to learn that. And it's, it's only the instincts
- 1:22:33Speaker 3: that's only going to come with him playing more football.
- 1:22:35Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: And the other one that stood out to me was,
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: I think it was the first snap of the game defensively.
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: He ragdolls the tight end, but he loses contain. Like
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: he takes the tight end and he throws them, which
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: is cool to see. And it's like a cool, like,
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: you know, cut it up, you know, like put it
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: on a clip that he just ragdolled a tight end.
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: But then Andy Dalton just went right around him and
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: out of the edge. So those are just the little
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: things of like harnessing that aggressiveness and like understanding, you know,
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: play recognition and pacing and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: The other, that that's, I would say 90% of it
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: for me with that guess is, is mental. The 10%
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: that I would say that I, you know, has a
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: little bit small C concern for me is that he's,
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: his pass rush is just unrefined. Like he just doesn't
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: really have anything besides a bull rush. You know, there's no,
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: you know, hand counters. There's no, like, I need to
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: see more of a bag from him, more of a
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: toolbox and, And that's just a young player thing. That's
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: not a gay back is thing that just a lot
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: of these young guys come into the league and they're
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: one trick ponies on the edge. They have either have
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: speed or they have power and, but they don't really
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: have a counter. And these tackles in the league are
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: too good. They're too good. They're going to brace for
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: your power. They're going to know what's coming. And if
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: you don't have a counter, a spin, an inside move,
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: a swim move, you know, some sort of counter, you know, dip,
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: you know, a dip or a ghost go around the edge. Um,
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: the one other thing I would say on, on that
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: is his favor. They haven't, I haven't seen him a
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: ton on stunts. I think he's going to be really
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: effective on stunts. I think they're trying to get him
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: to rep one-on-one pass rush in live games.
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: More so than like, we're going to put you on
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: a stunt. I think he's going to be able to
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: translate the stunts pretty well, but he just hasn't done
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: that a ton.
- 1:24:20Speaker 3: Yeah. Again, it's, it's just getting the snaps. And I
- 1:24:23Speaker 3: think part of it is to like the Patriots going
- 1:24:25Speaker 3: to ask a lot of them pretty quickly. Yeah. Which is,
- 1:24:29Speaker 3: I that's just kind of the team they set up.
- 1:24:31Speaker 3: They're going to have to do it.
- 1:24:32Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: Well, I have one more and we already talked about it,
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: so we don't have to belabor the point. Uh, but
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: I just had Tanner Arkin at fullback on here. Like
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: it has to be said, uh, Tanner Arkin at fullback. Uh,
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: but again, maybe that's, we're just going to try this
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: out in a game and see if he can do it.
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: All right. Uh, we got some calls again, rolling in here.
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: Let's get to him. We can start with the what's up, Eldred.
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: Hey, fellas.
- 1:24:56Speaker 7: Hey, Evan.
- 1:24:57Speaker 3: How y'all doing?
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: Doing well. How are you?
- 1:25:00Speaker 7: I'm a little sad about Booty, but I guess it
- 1:25:03Speaker 7: had to happen. My question is this. If the Giants
- 1:25:07Speaker 7: pick up the phone and say, we would trade you
- 1:25:10Speaker 7: a third traditional second if you do so many things,
- 1:25:17Speaker 7: would you pick the phone up and say, yeah, we'd
- 1:25:19Speaker 7: make that trade? Or would you say, no, we're good
- 1:25:22Speaker 7: at where we're at, and I'll take it off the air?
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: Thanks, Eldred. What was the conversation?
- 1:25:27Speaker 3: Give it up for a third. I'd probably do that.
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: I think that's right on the cusp. Like, I think
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: he's a third or fourth round pick, probably.
- 1:25:36Speaker 3: I'd probably do it.
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I'd probably.
- 1:25:39Speaker 3: Especially since Harold Landry's not back yet.
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: I'd probably think about it, too.
- 1:25:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: I think that that's right around where they're probably looking.
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: It's like a third or fourth round pick. Again, you know,
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: it's another one. People are going to say, well, why
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: does he have so much more value than Keishon Booty?
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: He's a top ten pick. He's a top 10 pick
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: in the first round. You know, like those types of
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: guys just have higher end potential to tease.
- 1:26:01Speaker 3: He's also, he has more proven production. Now it's not
- 1:26:05Speaker 3: as recent. The flip side is booty's a player that's
- 1:26:07Speaker 3: trending upwards. Thibodeau is a player that's trending in the
- 1:26:10Speaker 3: other way in terms of his production. He does have
- 1:26:12Speaker 3: a double digit sack season on his resume. Yeah.
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: And like a 50 pressure season on his resume too.
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: That the tablet inside baseball, it's like times out now.
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: So it just logs me out and then I can't
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: get the emails. And thank you, sir. Because it's very secure.
- 1:26:26Speaker 3: It's a Microsoft product.
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: Oh, good. Yeah, thanks for that. All right. Eddie is
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: in New York. What's up, Eddie?
- 1:26:35Speaker 3: Eddie.
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: Eddie going once.
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: Call back in, Eddie. We'll get you on here. Matt
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: is in Houston. What's up, Matt?
- 1:26:44Speaker 2: Hey, what's going on? Hey, can you hear me well?
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: Yeah, we got you.
- 1:26:48Speaker 2: Okay, I'm a first-time caller. I know it's irony. I'm
- 1:26:52Speaker 2: from Houston, but I've been a Pats fan since Drew Bledsoe.
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: I kind of, the booty trade, I kind of like
- 1:27:02Speaker 2: when a quarterback and a receiver has a chemistry. So
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: I was sort of like, and I like players from LSU,
- 1:27:11Speaker 2: so I was kind of upset about that. But it
- 1:27:14Speaker 2: just seems to me that the Texans has always cherry-picked
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: or for the Patriots. From our general manager to coaches,
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: Bill O'Brien to players, when they need something, it's like
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: we're the first ones. They come to fill their gap.
- 1:27:33Speaker 2: I'll hang up and listen and join y'all. Thank you.
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: Thanks, Matt. Well, Nick Casario is your general manager.
- 1:27:40Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:27:40Speaker 3: There's a reason for that.
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: There's overlap. There's player skill sets that you like. You know,
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: D'Amico Ryans isn't a Patriots guy, so at least you
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: got him going for you. Nick Caley is still their
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: offensive coordinator, right?
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: So he's a Patriot guy. I understand what he's saying, though.
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: It does feel like I was watching the Texans defense
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: tape last night to watch Jalen Reed a little bit.
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: And there's Miles Bryant popping up on the film and
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: things like that. So they do have some Patriot guys,
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: but it's because of Nick Casario. I mean, he's right.
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: You know, he's has a connection to the building and
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: all that kind of stuff is somebody that. I'm sure
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: Elliot Wolfe feels comfortable with working with on trades and
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: all that.
- 1:28:18Speaker 3: Good stuff, too.
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: I was hoping we were going to get a Jalen
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: Reed breakdown.
- 1:28:21Speaker 3: I do have one, if you want, from somebody who
- 1:28:24Speaker 3: covers the Texans.
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: Yeah, give it to me.
- 1:28:27Speaker 3: It's basically all stuff we said.
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: It's because we know Ball.
- 1:28:31Speaker 3: Landry Walker does a great job down there.
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. I know Landry.
- 1:28:35Speaker 3: He's solid. Hasn't been able to stay healthy, but they
- 1:28:38Speaker 3: trusted him even last year to start when he probably
- 1:28:40Speaker 3: more capable of playing close to the line of scrimmage,
- 1:28:43Speaker 3: but just not here talking about Houston, just not here
- 1:28:46Speaker 3: because of bodies, solid backup that can start in the
- 1:28:48Speaker 3: NFL for sure. They just have a lot of safeties.
- 1:28:51Speaker 3: So another team that barred from an area of depth
- 1:28:54Speaker 3: to help improve. I saw Phil Perry said something. I've
- 1:28:57Speaker 3: only seen this on Twitter. So I haven't heard the
- 1:29:00Speaker 3: quote and maybe there's some semantics in here, but. see
- 1:29:04Speaker 3: if I can find it again.
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: While you're looking for it. I, I just looking at
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: their secondary, I, I, they, they're obviously loaded on defense
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: at all three levels of their defense. Uh, but you know,
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: they have, uh, Kamari Ramsey was their draft pick at
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: a USC safety at a USC. I think they really
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: like what they've seen out of him. Uh, they brought
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: Reed Blankenship in and free agency. Uh, they still obviously have, uh,
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: you know, Petrie as the nickel and Bullock. And so
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: they just have a lot of safeties in that room.
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: And I don't think that, reading the tea leaves from
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: the Houston side. I don't think that Jalen Reed was
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: one of these guys that was going to get cut anyway.
- 1:29:41Speaker 3: The first thing I did was go look at their
- 1:29:42Speaker 3: roster projections. And I, I looked at, five or six
- 1:29:46Speaker 3: and he was on all of them.
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: Yeah. So I, I don't think that this is one
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: of those situations where we're going to cut our guy.
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: You're going to cut our, your guy. I actually think
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: that they both traded NFL player for NFL player here,
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: which is why I pushed back at the beginning of
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: the show on the, they traded at first special team,
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: or I don't think that that's, that's fair. Jalen Reed. Uh,
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: what would you see from Phil?
- 1:30:07Speaker 3: Um, so I want to make sure that this quote
- 1:30:11Speaker 3: is right. Um, Just talking to people in Houston, it
- 1:30:17Speaker 3: doesn't sound like he's assumed to be a starter there. Yeah, booty.
- 1:30:22Speaker 3: Talking about booty. Talking to people in Houston doesn't sound
- 1:30:24Speaker 3: like he's assumed to be a starter there. They're not
- 1:30:26Speaker 3: necessarily enamored with this guy. They don't feel like they've
- 1:30:30Speaker 3: gotten one over on the Patriots. And this is a
- 1:30:34Speaker 3: massive steal for them, even though. they have a need
- 1:30:37Speaker 3: at the position given they've dealt with some injuries recently.
- 1:30:40Speaker 3: So it kind of sounds like how we feel about
- 1:30:42Speaker 3: Jalen Reed.
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: They have Nico Collins. Who's obviously a stud in their
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: number one receiver. Jalen Noel. They're pretty high on both
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: of those Iowa state guys. Obviously Jaden Higgins got hurt
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: and that's what facilitated this trade is my guess. So
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: I assume that they think that Xavier Hutchinson is the
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: other guy.
- 1:30:59Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: Uh, tank Dell is, I don't know if tank Dell's
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: ready to play yet.
- 1:31:04Speaker 3: Anything you get from tank Dell's a bonus. Although, uh,
- 1:31:06Speaker 3: Lewis Bond has apparently had a really good camp for them.
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: I liked Lewis Bond.
- 1:31:09Speaker 3: Lewis Bond might be their F and Chisholm.
- 1:31:11Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: Similar types of players.
- 1:31:13Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: That's a good comp. Uh, this is emails from Alex, uh,
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: good way to just tee us up before we have
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: to wrap up the show, uh, on our reset, our
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: thoughts on Christian Gonzalez. Uh, so he saw that Christian
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: Gonzalez was back in practice yesterday. He was on Monday.
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: He was back. Is that just him being back from
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: the injury or possibly a sign? We were closing in
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: on a contract.
- 1:31:34Speaker 3: Uh, back from the injury.
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: I thought of the contract thing a little bit too.
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: It did pop in my head. Like this seems notable.
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: You hadn't, circled yesterday, Monday, as a big day for you.
- 1:31:47Speaker 3: It was more about if he wasn't out there. I
- 1:31:49Speaker 3: think it was more telling about him if he didn't
- 1:31:51Speaker 3: return yesterday than he did. Because the thing that got
- 1:31:54Speaker 3: lost in all of this, Evan, I think so many people,
- 1:31:57Speaker 3: fans hate contract negotiations. It's part of the game. I
- 1:32:02Speaker 3: get it. These guys got to take care of themselves.
- 1:32:04Speaker 3: The teams have their interests. It's maybe the worst part
- 1:32:08Speaker 3: of being a fan because you have to do one
- 1:32:11Speaker 3: of the players versus your team and it's a lose-lose. So,
- 1:32:15Speaker 3: and obviously the nastier the negotiation, not saying Gonzalez was ever,
- 1:32:18Speaker 3: that thing got nasty, is nasty, whatever. But the more
- 1:32:22Speaker 3: heated it gets, the worse it is. Just as a fan,
- 1:32:26Speaker 3: we lived it as kids with how many different players
- 1:32:28Speaker 3: where you didn't know if one of your favorite players
- 1:32:31Speaker 3: is going to be back with the team or not.
- 1:32:32Speaker 3: And sometimes it worked out, sometimes it didn't. So I
- 1:32:36Speaker 3: think a lot of people, when Gonzalez went out and
- 1:32:40Speaker 3: Greg Bedard and others reported it was an injury, were like, Phew.
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:32:43Speaker 3: He's just hurt. That's why he's not out there.
- 1:32:45Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:32:46Speaker 3: The contract. He's not mad at the team. The team's
- 1:32:48Speaker 3: not mad at him, but it's also your second best
- 1:32:52Speaker 3: player is hurt less than a month to go before
- 1:32:55Speaker 3: the season. Like that's not good.
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: And so, well, last year it was just a hamstring
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: and then he missed games.
- 1:33:01Speaker 3: So I think that kind of got lost in it
- 1:33:03Speaker 3: was like people glad it wasn't him holding out because
- 1:33:07Speaker 3: of what that meant for the longterm. And then it's like, okay,
- 1:33:09Speaker 3: like it's, it is, Good it's not that, but also
- 1:33:13Speaker 3: this injury isn't exactly encouraging. And so you want him
- 1:33:17Speaker 3: to be able to ramp up for the season. So
- 1:33:20Speaker 3: if he hadn't been out there yesterday, either the contract
- 1:33:24Speaker 3: situation has maybe gotten bad, considering how much Rabel talked
- 1:33:27Speaker 3: about there was a ramp up in return to play, or, hey,
- 1:33:30Speaker 3: he's actually hurt, and you got Seattle in two weeks,
- 1:33:33Speaker 3: and somebody's got to cover JSN, and you want to
- 1:33:36Speaker 3: have him out there at full strength. So him returning
- 1:33:38Speaker 3: yesterday was more just about All right, the ramp up
- 1:33:41Speaker 3: to the season continues. I don't think it's necessarily indicative
- 1:33:45Speaker 3: one way or the other. It definitely means the contract's
- 1:33:47Speaker 3: not in a horrible spot, the negotiation. I don't think
- 1:33:50Speaker 3: it's like, okay, he returned yesterday, so he's definitely signing.
- 1:33:53Speaker 3: But it's whatever that was that kept him off the field,
- 1:33:56Speaker 3: clearly not super serious, whether it was the contract, whether
- 1:33:59Speaker 3: it was the injury.
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: And he moved well.
- 1:34:02Speaker 3: Yeah, full participant, too. Not just back out there.
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: He looked like himself.
- 1:34:05Speaker 3: Looked fine. Now, cause my, my theory had been maybe
- 1:34:08Speaker 3: for one reason or another, he was just going to
- 1:34:09Speaker 3: miss the joint practices and he wasn't going to come
- 1:34:11Speaker 3: back in between. That wasn't, that wasn't realistic. I did
- 1:34:14Speaker 3: think it was interesting when some of the players were
- 1:34:16Speaker 3: asked about him returning yesterday. We're like, I was very
- 1:34:18Speaker 3: happy to see him. I was so glad to see it. Like,
- 1:34:22Speaker 3: I don't know, felt a little flowing for a guy
- 1:34:24Speaker 3: that maybe dealt with a minor injury. So maybe they
- 1:34:26Speaker 3: know something. We don't that if you want to read
- 1:34:28Speaker 3: into a little bit being contract related, I would say so,
- 1:34:31Speaker 3: but yeah, Yeah, me hyping up yesterday as a big
- 1:34:33Speaker 3: day was more about what it would have meant if
- 1:34:35Speaker 3: he wasn't there.
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: So it did cross my mind when we saw him
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: out there yesterday, especially when we saw him out there
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: in team. It's one thing to come out and do
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: positional drills.
- 1:34:45Speaker 3: Yeah, it's the whole participation.
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: Yeah, when he was out there in team.
- 1:34:49Speaker 3: A day before Elliott Wolfe speaks, by the way.
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: It felt notable that he was out there. I always thought,
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: and this is just my opinion, that it was a
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: little column A, a little column B. He banged up
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: his ankle, plus he doesn't have a long-term commitment yet
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: from the team in terms of the contract. We're not
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: going to push it while we're in a negotiation. He's
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: obviously healthy. That's good. Item number one is perfectly, that's good.
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: That needs to happen, right? It did dawn on me, though,
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: yesterday that If they were really in a dark place
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: in this negotiation, he would not be out there.
- 1:35:30Speaker 3: No.
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: That's his leverage. His leverage is to hold out.
- 1:35:32Speaker 8: Right.
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: Or hold in or whatever you want to call it.
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: The other thing that it dawned on me, though, with
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: the contract, too, and this is something I think gets
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: lost in these contract negotiations on these rookie extensions. at
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: the end of the day, the team kind of has
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: him over a barrel. He has the fourth year of
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: his rookie contract. He has the fifth year option. And
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: if we really want to play it out, he, they
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: have the franchise tag in their back pocket too. So
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: in theory, the Patriots have three years of team control
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: on Christian Gonzalez before they have to actually extend them.
- 1:36:02Speaker 2: Now.
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: It makes all the sense in the world to just
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: give him his money, right? From a team perspective too,
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: in terms of mindset and motivation and all that kind
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: of stuff. But if you're Christian Gonzalez, there is gotta
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: be a piece of you that's saying, and I think
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: that he's kind of said this at the podium. Either way,
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: I got to play football, whether it's on a new
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: contract or it's on the fourth year of my rookie deal,
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: I have to play football. I have to play well.
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: Cause if it's here or it's someplace else, Trent McDuffie,
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: then it's gotta, it's going to have to come out
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: of me playing well.
- 1:36:33Speaker 3: Somebody's going to pay him.
- 1:36:34Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: So it just, at, at the end of the day,
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: his leverage is not as much as you might think
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: because the team has three years of, of team control
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: on him until they really need to get, busy here
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: in terms of this contract. So I understand why he's
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: practicing maybe a little bit more than, than some others
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: because of that, because it's not like he's on in
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: a contract here. It's not, you know, the end of
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: the deal or there's no guaranteed money left on his
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: rookie contract or something like that.
- 1:37:03Speaker 9: Nope.
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: Like the next two years of his rookie contract, the
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: fourth and the fifth year option, if he plays are guaranteed.
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: He's going to get that money. So he's kind of
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: has to play like it. And if he's going to play,
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: you might as well practice and make sure you're ready.
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: Cause you got Jason out of the shoot week one
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: in Seattle. You got to write.
- 1:37:21Speaker 3: You want to make some money.
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: That's a showcase.
- 1:37:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: Just like the super bowl was. It's a big, big showcase.
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: All right. A couple more emails. And we got to
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: wrap just a little bit early. Cause P is on
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: right after us. This is from Joe. And he's got
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: a little spicy about this Keishon booty trade, which I expected.
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: I expected some people to not, to really not like
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: this trade, but he repeatedly in the email, Alex says
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: that you blew it. And in reference to us, just
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: to be clear, I had nothing to do with this.
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: Like we don't make decisions.
- 1:37:53Speaker 3: We're getting blamed for this.
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: You really blew it. It was the subject line of
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: this email.
- 1:37:57Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: Nothing to do with me. Nothing to do with our takes.
- 1:38:00Speaker 3: Blow it.
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: We, we don't know. No, Alex, this is about like,
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: you know, he thinks he's emailing the Patriots. Like, so
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: he's emailing that. My Ellie Wolf is our email. Wolf
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: are emailing, reading these emails. Um, But this is sort
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: of just a general sentiment. I'm going to I'm going
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: to edit out some of the not so nice things
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: he said here that I thought that most people would have.
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: You know, you gave away a 24 year old weapon
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: for a backup safety in a twenty twenty eight. I
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: understand having that mindset of this trade like that. That's
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: how we all kind of felt in the moment. So
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: I get that. And I don't want to you know,
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: we're not dodging that opinion whatsoever. But I do want
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: to get out there that I had. We don't have
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: anything to do with the trades. Your emails are not
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: going to Robert Kraft or Elliot Wolfe. I'm sorry that
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: that's not the case.
- 1:38:53Speaker 3: Tell me Elliot doesn't watch our show.
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: He might, uh, Matt in Wichita has kind of the,
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: a little bit of a different spin on it just
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: to play both sides here. Uh, I think part of
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: the problem with the booty trade is that a lot
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: of Patriots fans have roasted tinted glasses when it comes
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: to Keishon booty. So many of booty's catches last year were,
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: how did he catch that? You know, highlight type catches.
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: There were so many throws that were 50, 50 at
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: best when the balls in the air, that somehow he
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: came down with ball skills are definitely a thing, but
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: I feel like there was some level of luck there.
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: the case on booties production last year, considering his lack
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: of separation. So I don't think that it was luck.
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: I think that that's a skill set, you know, winning
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: the ball at the catch point, understanding how to use
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: your body to box guys out and shield the catch.
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: Why I think is a skill set. my whole thing
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: was always with Keishon booty was okay. And what, like,
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: what else does you bring to the table besides the
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: ability to win a go ball down the field? He's
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: a lead at that. He is as good as any
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: receiver in the league at winning go balls down the field,
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: did it against Derek Stingley, not once, but twice in
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: the last couple of years. It's one of the best
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: cornerbacks in football that he's doing that too. my whole
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: thing with him in terms of volume, he had 33
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: catches last year. And the question always was, how do
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: you get more volume to case on booty? Well, volume
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: comes when you're a three level player, when you can
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: do things at the first, second and third level of
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: the defense. So what's his first level route. What's his
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: second rebel level route. Can he play in the slot?
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: Can he move around the formation or is he truly
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: just a, I'm glued to the boundary and I'm running
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: a go route down the sideline. So far within his
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: Patriots career, the one like elite trait that he's been
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: able to show is just that Kyle Williams is kind
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: of in the same boat right now. He has one
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: crazy good skill and that is he's a burner. He
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: can get down the field and he can, you know,
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: win a go route. Keishon booty is kind of the
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: same thing in order for him to go to like
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: a 30 from a 33 catch player to like a
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: 60 catch player.
- 1:40:56Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: It's not throwing him more go balls. It was throwing
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: him different routes. It was finding ways to expand his role.
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: And I just feel like that was the one thing,
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: the one hangup in him as a player was, is
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: that he never really had like a B and C.
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: He only had, he only had a fastball. He had
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: no off speed. So if you don't have any off
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: speed pitches as a receiver, then you're kind of, you're
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: one trick pony, you know, and that, that's where I
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: was kind of at with booty in terms of his
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: ceiling as a player.
- 1:41:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:41:25Speaker 3: And again, with AJ Brown here, there just wasn't going
- 1:41:27Speaker 3: to be more opportunity to expand that. So he was
- 1:41:29Speaker 3: going to be a depth player and they have other
- 1:41:31Speaker 3: guys that can do that.
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: Uh, this is from David, uh, in South Carolina. This
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: is a good question. Uh, It's from Dave in South Carolina.
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: I'm stumbling because that's just his dad's name, and he
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: also lives in South Carolina. Is it him? He listens
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: to the show.
- 1:41:47Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: I've been hearing DeMario Douglas's name a bunch this summer.
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: He looks like he's really finding his stride in terms
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: of his role in the McDaniels offense. What are your
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: expectations for Douglas this upcoming year? He has 40 catches
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: for 600 yards. This is my number one question with
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: DeMario Douglas, because I think he's another low volume, like
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: high yards per catch kind of guy last year. is
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: there a volume element to his game now? Has he
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: rounded out his game so much in the slot that
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: he's going to now be the guy that we thought
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: maybe could catch like 80 balls inside?
- 1:42:22Speaker 3: Yeah. I don't know if he's going to be a
- 1:42:23Speaker 3: hundred catch guy. I think the number of him is
- 1:42:25Speaker 3: probably more 60 to 70. So yeah, In 24, he
- 1:42:28Speaker 3: had 66 catches for 621 yards. Can you improve on
- 1:42:32Speaker 3: that a little bit? Like, I think that's kind of
- 1:42:34Speaker 3: the ballpark I'm looking for.
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: Yeah, I would like to hope that maybe he's improved
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: a little bit in some of those areas. I think
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: the one thing that we've seen from him, though, in
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: the preseason and in camp, is those crossing routes he's
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: been really good on those crossing routes running away from
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: man coverage out of the slot on like you know
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: second first and second level shallows and intermediate crossing routes
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: uh he's been like a demon on those so like
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: really difficult to cover.
- 1:43:00Speaker 3: Just using that speed yeah he.
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: Got cooper dejean a handful of times in those joint
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: practices on those types of routes so uh you know
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: if he can do that uh maybe that's another element,
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: you know, we talked about it with booty. Like what,
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: what are your off speed pitches? We know tomorrow Douglas
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: can stretch the seam and get up the field and
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: run vertical. Uh, maybe like those shallow crossers are kind
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: of his change up to that. It'll run horizontally and
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: stretch the field horizontally. So that's what I'm hoping to
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: see a little bit more uptick in volume from him
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: is to be able to do that sort of thing.
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: This is more of a you question, so I think
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: it's perfect. Have you seen the new rivalry jerseys? You
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: were just talking to me about this, so you have.
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: I'd like to know if you agree with me that
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: our uniform is... And most of the uniforms from last
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: year are much better than this year. Do you have
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: a rivalry uniform take?
- 1:43:48Speaker 3: So I think as a whole, these are better. Cause
- 1:43:50Speaker 3: last year outside of the Patriots, everyone was basically all
- 1:43:52Speaker 3: white or all black. I know the Cardinals was kind
- 1:43:55Speaker 3: of like tan. I think the jets is technically very
- 1:43:57Speaker 3: dark green, but they're all white or all black. They
- 1:43:59Speaker 3: really weren't imaginative. This year is more, I think diverse.
- 1:44:06Speaker 3: I think they're more hit and miss. I think the,
- 1:44:08Speaker 3: in no particular order, the Titans one's really good. The
- 1:44:11Speaker 3: Vikings one's really good. The bears are, And the Packers
- 1:44:14Speaker 3: ones are excellent. The Lions one is just a Panthers uniform.
- 1:44:17Speaker 3: I don't understand it at all. It's weird. I think
- 1:44:21Speaker 3: they even already wore that helmet as an alternate. The
- 1:44:24Speaker 3: Colts one's okay. I like the helmet, the jerseys, whatever.
- 1:44:27Speaker 3: And then the Jaguars one's very bizarre. I actually like
- 1:44:30Speaker 3: the helmet more than I think most people do. I
- 1:44:33Speaker 3: think the teal with the gold face mask pops. The
- 1:44:36Speaker 3: jerseys are okay, but they'd be better if they were
- 1:44:38Speaker 3: teal than if they were white. And the leopard print
- 1:44:41Speaker 3: black pants are not it. So it kind of gets
- 1:44:43Speaker 3: worse as you go down. It was potential. I think
- 1:44:46Speaker 3: the Jaguars overall idea isn't terrible. The execution kind of sucks.
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: The leopard. I mean, they are the Jaguars, so they
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: have leopard pants.
- 1:44:54Speaker 3: It just doesn't look right though. It looks weird, but
- 1:44:56Speaker 3: they are.
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: They're Jaguars.
- 1:44:59Speaker 3: Do it in the number. Like, if they did it
- 1:45:00Speaker 3: in the number..
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: So it's, like, too much.
- 1:45:02Speaker 3: Which I think it is too much. It's too much.
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good point.
- 1:45:04Speaker 3: I still think... Let me look at last year's.
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: Like, a number maybe just on the stripe, like, down
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: the leg or something.
- 1:45:11Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:45:11Speaker 3: It doesn't need to be the whole pants.
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:45:15Speaker 3: I still think the Patriots are probably... I don't know.
- 1:45:20Speaker 3: I love those Niners ones. Those are very good.
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: Patriots rivalry jerseys really grow on you. They're excellent. Well,
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: and because they really grow on you.
- 1:45:28Speaker 3: Cardinals were all white. Seahawks were all white. Dolphins were
- 1:45:31Speaker 3: all black. Jets were basically all black. Niners were all black.
- 1:45:34Speaker 3: Rams were all black. Bills were all white. The Patriots
- 1:45:37Speaker 3: were the only one. And they were all monotone. They
- 1:45:38Speaker 3: were like, I like some that bugs me on football
- 1:45:41Speaker 3: uniforms with very few exceptions. Jersey pants, same color feels
- 1:45:44Speaker 3: very high school. So they were the only ones that
- 1:45:47Speaker 3: actually had like a real NFL looking uniform. Um, you know,
- 1:45:51Speaker 3: these new ones, I think the bears and Packers especially
- 1:45:54Speaker 3: are right up there, but the Patriots are still upper
- 1:45:57Speaker 3: echelon of rivalry jerseys.
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: They really grew on you when you first saw them,
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: when they came out last year with the, with the like, yeah.
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: die whatever those are called markups whatever it was like
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: what is this is a weird blue it's not patriot
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: blue it's not I've never seen that blue before that
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: sort of thing the jerseys I don't I see Drake
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: May 10 rivalry.
- 1:46:19Speaker 3: Jerseys All the time. They're very popular.
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: That is the most popular jersey I have to imagine
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: that the pro shop sells. The rivalry gear, like the
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: sweatshirts and the rivalry jackets and things like that are awesome.
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: And I'm not just doing this just to, like, be
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: a brand ambassador.
- 1:46:36Speaker 3: No, I mean, they're always sold out of it.
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: It's really... I don't know if I've ever seen like
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: a Jersey do a one 80 like that, where the
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: initial impression of the Jersey was not good. And then
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: all of a sudden people started to like, see them
- 1:46:50Speaker 1: in person.
- 1:46:50Speaker 3: I will say that.
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: And now they're the most popular thing going.
- 1:46:53Speaker 3: If you talk about the merch aspect of it, not
- 1:46:56Speaker 3: just the Jersey, but the whole thing, some of the
- 1:46:58Speaker 3: Chicago merch I've seen in the branding is excellent. They really,
- 1:47:04Speaker 3: really now. It's very heavy Chicago, Chicago, Chicago. And I
- 1:47:08Speaker 3: see people photoshopping in Hammond over that. But they have
- 1:47:11Speaker 3: this one logo where it's like a football shape. And
- 1:47:15Speaker 3: it says Chicago in letters in it. And then there's
- 1:47:17Speaker 3: a bear lying on the top. Almost kind of looks
- 1:47:19Speaker 3: like one of the Bruins alternates here. I'll show this
- 1:47:22Speaker 3: to you. People can look it up. But it's like
- 1:47:24Speaker 3: a different kind of look than what they've had. Like,
- 1:47:26Speaker 3: that's pretty cool.
- 1:47:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:47:28Speaker 3: That's a good look.
- 1:47:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:47:29Speaker 3: And then people keep photoshopping Hammond.
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: I absolutely love my robbery jacket. One of the best
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: jackets I've ever owned. That thing is awesome jacket.
- 1:47:37Speaker 3: Nike has not totally blown this. And I was a
- 1:47:40Speaker 3: little hesitant about it coming in. Uh, Nike's done well
- 1:47:46Speaker 3: with it so far. So we'll, we'll see. And they
- 1:47:48Speaker 3: also announced part of this. Uh, they announced the rivalry
- 1:47:50Speaker 3: schedule for the upcoming year. Okay. The Patriots will wear
- 1:47:53Speaker 3: theirs week 13 against the bills this season. And they
- 1:47:56Speaker 3: will also be on the other side when the jets
- 1:47:58Speaker 3: wear theirs this year.
- 1:47:59Speaker 1: So the bills are not wearing them against the Patriots.
- 1:48:01Speaker 3: No, so there is one. Hang on. I have it here.
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: We have to wrap, but I want to see the ice.
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: I don't love the ice out bills ones, but just
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: because I think that they fit with the.
- 1:48:11Speaker 3: It would be cool.
- 1:48:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: The ice out bills against the Patriots blue, you know,
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: rivalry blue. I feel like that's just a nice jersey.
- 1:48:17Speaker 3: I thought that's what it was going to be like,
- 1:48:18Speaker 3: you know, nine when they wore the throwbacks. but I
- 1:48:20Speaker 3: guess they like the Packers dark green, the bears dark
- 1:48:23Speaker 3: blue wouldn't get work. But, um, the Rams and Seahawks
- 1:48:27Speaker 3: are wearing theirs against each other head to head week 16.
- 1:48:30Speaker 3: And they made a note in the release. It is
- 1:48:32Speaker 3: the first time two teams will wear their rivalry jerseys
- 1:48:35Speaker 3: against each other. because the Rams wear black, Seahawks wear white,
- 1:48:39Speaker 3: so they can do that. Couldn't do it with all
- 1:48:40Speaker 3: of them, but you can do it with those.
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: Well, you could have done it with the Patriots and
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: the Bills.
- 1:48:42Speaker 3: Yeah, they should have. That would have been cool.
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: All right. Patriots unfiltered will come up in eight minutes.
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: We'll reset our thoughts and get the rest of the
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: gang's thoughts on the Keishon booty trade. As far as
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: catch 22, I think we're 10 to 12, right? Because
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: you're on with... I'm on younger math next week. Yeah,
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: so it's got to be in the morning, Ace, so
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: make a note of that. 10 to 12. on Wednesday
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: next week. Cause this guy's got to go deal with Felger.
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: So we'll let him do that.
- 1:49:09Speaker 2: Right. Yeah.
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: Fancy pants over here.
- 1:49:10Speaker 3: Oh, I gotta do my job. Just like you have
- 1:49:12Speaker 3: to cut this show short so you can do your job.
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: We're going to take a quick break here though. And
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: unfilter will be up at noon. So we'll see you
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: guys next week on catch 22 and I'll see you
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: in eight minutes on unfiltered.
- 1:49:23Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: See you then.
- 1:49:26Speaker 3: Hey, this is Deuce. Thanks for tuning into the show.
