- 1:06Speaker 2: the we it's Kevin mckella and Christine Nicholas and Christine,
- 1:11Speaker 2: I don't know about you. These beautiful days. The last
- 1:14Speaker 2: few days we've had like I'm really getting itchy to
- 1:16Speaker 2: like get out and be out, Like we're definitely done
- 1:20Speaker 2: with the cold and the rain and we're ready to
- 1:22Speaker 2: just go enjoy everything that's awesome about our city.
- 1:25Speaker 3: It is it really New York City shines brightly when
- 1:29Speaker 3: it is sunny like this.
- 1:30Speaker 4: It's not quite the baked Apple yet.
- 1:31Speaker 3: It might be later this later this weekend. It's supposed
- 1:35Speaker 3: to hit in the nineties. But it is a gorgeous
- 1:39Speaker 3: It just makes New York great end. By the way,
- 1:41Speaker 3: the excitement, the smiles, everybody, no matter what background you are,
- 1:46Speaker 3: doesn't matter.
- 1:46Speaker 4: Everybody's rooting for the nixt Cks.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Yeah, you know it's not look I am as you know,
- 1:53Speaker 3: a Yankee fan, right, but even when the Yankees are
- 1:56Speaker 3: in the World Series and New York is electrified during
- 2:00Speaker 3: that period, but you know, the Yankees have won a
- 2:03Speaker 3: lot of World Series. We also have two teams in
- 2:06Speaker 3: New York City, so even you know, there are still
- 2:10Speaker 3: met fans that just refused everything.
- 2:13Speaker 2: For the two NFL too. We've got so many sports teams.
- 2:17Speaker 2: It's not gonna know.
- 2:19Speaker 3: About two NBA teams, honestly, I mean, like, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 2:23Speaker 3: they were really New Jersey Nets.
- 2:24Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:25Speaker 2: I mean, so like even the Wow the snob's coming
- 2:28Speaker 2: out tonight, are not really looking down that nose, aren't we?
- 2:33Speaker 3: No?
- 2:33Speaker 2: I mean it's the Knicks, it's the next Giants and
- 2:36Speaker 2: Jets aren't New York teams either.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Again, that is that is dividing the Giants Jets, you know.
- 2:43Speaker 3: But so you say Giants, Jets, Mets, Yankees, which one
- 2:46Speaker 3: No one says Knicks or Nets. I mean, it's just
- 2:48Speaker 3: or you know, there's also Islanders and Rangers. Right, so
- 2:52Speaker 3: maybe that's a dichotomy. But the Knicks are a unifying
- 2:56Speaker 3: factor for this city. Everybody right now is wearing our
- 3:00Speaker 3: engine blue, even Nets fans, okay, because they're not around
- 3:04Speaker 3: in the postseason quite so. Yeah, and this team I
- 3:08Speaker 3: think is just everybody's fallen in love with them.
- 3:11Speaker 2: I am, well, how incredible. Let's just just memorialize this
- 3:14Speaker 2: for a second. How incredible is it. They go into
- 3:17Speaker 2: the first game on Wednesday, and look, the Spurs have
- 3:21Speaker 2: the NBA MVP and he is he is an intimidating
- 3:24Speaker 2: player to go up against. And he ran the MVP
- 3:27Speaker 2: contest like he ran away with it. It wasn't even close.
- 3:30Speaker 2: But they go in there and they find themselves down
- 3:32Speaker 2: fourteen points midway through the third quarter, and it's like,
- 3:36Speaker 2: it's like gut check time. And it's one of those
- 3:38Speaker 2: things if you're a coach, you have very few opportunities
- 3:41Speaker 2: where you see these moments, but you get to say
- 3:43Speaker 2: to your guys, guys, if we don't give it all
- 3:46Speaker 2: right now, we'll kick ourselves forever. And to see them
- 3:51Speaker 2: come out of that huddle and to just systematically whittle
- 3:56Speaker 2: that lead down, to see a Brunston come back from
- 3:59Speaker 2: the injury from the and to see him just turn
- 4:02Speaker 2: it on and it wasn't just it wasn't just an
- 4:04Speaker 2: offensive show boat thing. Like they were playing good solid
- 4:07Speaker 2: defense too. Like they put the whole effort together and
- 4:10Speaker 2: end up winning by ten and you're like, holy cow,
- 4:13Speaker 2: it was amazing.
- 4:13Speaker 3: Well. And then Josh Hart, who is the heart of
- 4:15Speaker 3: the team. I mean, how many three pointers did he have?
- 4:17Speaker 3: Five three pointers I believe were.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Well down the stretch. He hit a couple of really
- 4:22Speaker 2: big ones, but he and Brunson in the final in
- 4:25Speaker 2: the final fourth quarter run, it was it was all
- 4:27Speaker 2: them and the defense. They rebounded, bounce, they rebounded incredibly
- 4:32Speaker 2: and when you have Will Mumby or whatever however you
- 4:34Speaker 2: say his name on the other side.
- 4:36Speaker 4: Wim Bayama, Victor Wim Bayama.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Wimby, Wimpy is taking all that like he has his
- 4:45Speaker 2: arms fan like you'd think nobody would get rebounds around him,
- 4:48Speaker 2: and the Knicks were boxing out, they were playing defense,
- 4:50Speaker 2: and it was it was just so cool to see
- 4:53Speaker 2: this team because you don't really have like a superstar
- 4:56Speaker 2: this well.
- 4:57Speaker 3: I think also, you know, as from what I understand,
- 5:01Speaker 3: when the Spurs play fast because they're young, a young team,
- 5:05Speaker 3: they kind of like dominate. But the Knicks, being sort
- 5:09Speaker 3: of more methodical and whatnot, they they slowed him down.
- 5:12Speaker 3: And then Hubayama was making mistakes. I mean, the fact
- 5:15Speaker 3: that he dribbled a ball off of his foot. You
- 5:17Speaker 3: know that that just doesn't happen with him, right, But
- 5:20Speaker 3: you know he was probably feeling the pressure for the
- 5:22Speaker 3: first time.
- 5:23Speaker 4: So anyway, I say, you.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Should playing point guards.
- 5:29Speaker 4: How many games will the Knicks take it?
- 5:31Speaker 2: This is what I was kidding everybody about earlier in
- 5:35Speaker 2: the week, and I said, I really think that they
- 5:38Speaker 2: have the potential if they go to San Antonio and
- 5:41Speaker 2: split or do better if they win both. If they
- 5:43Speaker 2: win both, I think they're going to sweep the series.
- 5:46Speaker 2: If they win tonight in San Antonio, I think they're
- 5:49Speaker 2: going to sweep the series. If they lose tonight, I'm
- 5:51Speaker 2: not particularly worried about it. They still have home court
- 5:53Speaker 2: advantage because you just have to come out of there
- 5:55Speaker 2: winning one of the two, and then in the way
- 5:57Speaker 2: the NBA Finals are set up, they go two three two,
- 6:00Speaker 2: so you get three consecutive home games following the early
- 6:06Speaker 2: advantage of the home team from the other side, and
- 6:08Speaker 2: I think that sets them up to do great here
- 6:11Speaker 2: at home for those next three games.
- 6:12Speaker 3: I think it's two two. I'm being told by my editor,
- 6:17Speaker 3: my sports editor, is they.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Change it back because it was changed it back? Okay
- 6:21Speaker 2: to well, there are a lot of people complaining about that. Still,
- 6:24Speaker 2: if they split, you still have technically home court advantage
- 6:28Speaker 2: because you come home and win to then you're up
- 6:29Speaker 2: three to one. Even if you go back and lose
- 6:31Speaker 2: again in San Antonio, you come back with another chance
- 6:34Speaker 2: to wrap it up at home. I think this team
- 6:36Speaker 2: wants to win it at home.
- 6:37Speaker 4: I think this team, I think they want to win
- 6:39Speaker 4: it at home as well.
- 6:40Speaker 3: Actually, it'll be a little bit like Mayhem, but it'll
- 6:43Speaker 3: be fun and New York is excited and jazzed up,
- 6:46Speaker 3: and I love the unification of the Knicks. All right,
- 6:50Speaker 3: There's a lot of other exciting things that are happening
- 6:52Speaker 3: in the city. We've got the Tony Awards Sunday night.
- 6:56Speaker 3: That is an exciting Usually that alone is what brings
- 7:00Speaker 3: us out.
- 7:00Speaker 2: So how do you think is going to sweep on?
- 7:02Speaker 2: I'll ask you in return.
- 7:03Speaker 3: It's not going to be a sweep this year. I
- 7:05Speaker 3: think it's going to be a little bit all over
- 7:07Speaker 3: the place. I don't think you're going to have like
- 7:09Speaker 3: that one show that wins thirteen Tony Awards. I think
- 7:13Speaker 3: it's going to be all over the place. You know
- 7:14Speaker 3: Nathan Lane, I saw him this week in A Death
- 7:17Speaker 3: of a Salesman and John Lithgow in Giant. Those are
- 7:22Speaker 3: the two actors that are battling it out for Best
- 7:25Speaker 3: Performance by an Actor in a leading role in a play.
- 7:28Speaker 3: But then you also have Mark Strong from Oedipus, And
- 7:31Speaker 3: you know Edipus is not on Broadway right now, it closed.
- 7:35Speaker 3: But what a powerful production that was to be able
- 7:38Speaker 3: to take a Shakespeare play and put it in the
- 7:42Speaker 3: modern era, to make it about a campaign, right, and
- 7:46Speaker 3: you like when we were kids and we learned about
- 7:49Speaker 3: Oedipus as we would call it, you know, like, okay,
- 7:52Speaker 3: the boy kills the father to marry the mother, right,
- 7:55Speaker 3: we all know the plot.
- 7:57Speaker 4: It seems just not plausible.
- 7:59Speaker 3: But back Shakespeare, Shakespeare's day, I guess, you know, fourteen
- 8:03Speaker 3: year olds were having babies, right, but now the way
- 8:06Speaker 3: they the way they had it in this in this
- 8:08Speaker 3: play again it was a very young girl having a
- 8:11Speaker 3: baby because she was the servant of the politician. I
- 8:16Speaker 3: hope if it wins, if it doesn't win, that it's
- 8:19Speaker 3: getting a lot of attention and it should run again
- 8:22Speaker 3: because it was such a powerful performance. For Best Play,
- 8:28Speaker 3: you know, there's uh, there's The Revival, which is Death
- 8:32Speaker 3: of a Salesman, Every Brilliant Thing, Fallen, Angels and Edips.
- 8:37Speaker 3: You know, I think every Brilliant Thing was just so
- 8:41Speaker 3: amazing with Daniel Radcliffe. Yeah, yeah, yeah, and then yeah,
- 8:49Speaker 3: and then there's Best Play, which you know, or the
- 8:52Speaker 3: new plays. There's Bolisters, Giant, Liberation, and Little bear Ridge Road.
- 8:56Speaker 3: I think Liberation might take that one, although I loved
- 8:59Speaker 3: Bolisters so much.
- 9:00Speaker 2: About Molists will be interesting real quickly because we're short
- 9:03Speaker 2: on time. Musical what do you think is going to
- 9:05Speaker 2: take musical? Uh?
- 9:08Speaker 4: I think rag Time.
- 9:10Speaker 3: It's between Ragtime and Cats, but this Cats is in
- 9:13Speaker 3: New Cats. It's different, you know, but that's best Revival too.
- 9:18Speaker 4: Best musical.
- 9:19Speaker 3: It's between Lost Boys, Smanga Doon, Titanique and Two Strangers.
- 9:23Speaker 3: I love Two Strangers, but I think it's going to
- 9:25Speaker 3: go to Smega Dune.
- 9:26Speaker 2: All right, there you go. We'll check her scorecard after
- 9:31Speaker 2: the awards. This week, we've got a huge show, Michael Riedal,
- 9:34Speaker 2: speaking of Broadway, we've got him. We're also going to
- 9:37Speaker 2: go to uh Fresco Biscotto and talk with Coja LJ.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Don't call him Lewis and don't actually don't call him
- 9:45Speaker 2: Ja unless he's in trouble. But we'll talk about all
- 9:47Speaker 2: that coming up. And then we've got tips for your weekend.
- 9:49Speaker 5: Don't go anywhere.
- 9:57Speaker 6: Now from New York back to Radio Night Live. You're
- 10:00Speaker 6: Kevin McCullough.
- 10:02Speaker 5: Welcome back.
- 10:03Speaker 2: It's Fun Friday, the Fun Friday edition of Radio Night Live.
- 10:07Speaker 2: So glad you're with us, and very glad to welcome
- 10:10Speaker 2: back an old old friend of not just this show,
- 10:13Speaker 2: Christine Nicholas, but before you and I were doing Broadway
- 10:17Speaker 2: on Fridays and talking about it all. Michael Riedle used
- 10:19Speaker 2: to visit with me in the five o'clock hour before
- 10:23Speaker 2: John Katz and matitas elbowed his way into that slot,
- 10:27Speaker 2: and uh and Michael and I would talk about Broadway
- 10:29Speaker 2: every single every single Friday, and I always look forward
- 10:32Speaker 2: to it. But he's back, he's got a big show.
- 10:35Speaker 2: We were just talking about the opportunity and the monologue
- 10:37Speaker 2: and Michael. I usually let Christine do the introductions, but
- 10:41Speaker 2: I just felt like, you see such a long time friend.
- 10:44Speaker 2: I just wanted to say, hi, thanks for coming on.
- 10:46Speaker 7: Why did your copains do? Good to be back with you.
- 10:49Speaker 7: I remember our four thirty hits, as we call them,
- 10:51Speaker 7: into business very very well. We had We had a
- 10:54Speaker 7: lot of We had a lot of fun.
- 10:55Speaker 2: My favorite one was when you described the Martini crawl
- 10:58Speaker 2: through Manhattan and what you put in your book about
- 11:00Speaker 2: that that was to this day some legendary stuff. Anyway,
- 11:05Speaker 2: we've been talking about your show actually for the last
- 11:07Speaker 2: couple of weeks. But for people that are just joining
- 11:09Speaker 2: us for the first time, what's the concept behind this?
- 11:11Speaker 2: Because this is not your average Broadway fair.
- 11:14Speaker 7: Right, well, it's a play written by an old friend
- 11:18Speaker 7: of mine, Eric Bentley, who was a very prominent critic
- 11:20Speaker 7: back in the nineteen fifties and sixties, and Eric was
- 11:23Speaker 7: the translator of the great German play right Bertolt Breck.
- 11:26Speaker 7: Eric is no longer with us, although he lived to
- 11:28Speaker 7: be one hundred and two years old. But Eric wrote
- 11:31Speaker 7: a play in nineteen seventy two called Are You Now
- 11:34Speaker 7: or Have You Ever Been? Which, of course is what
- 11:36Speaker 7: the House on American Activities Committee question they would pose
- 11:39Speaker 7: to people suspected of being communists. And you know, in
- 11:42Speaker 7: the nineteen fifties, Hugheck investigated the entertainment business Hollywood and
- 11:48Speaker 7: Broadway and television looking for communists, and there were thousands
- 11:53Speaker 7: of pages of transcripts and the hearings back then, and
- 11:56Speaker 7: Eric went through them all and he cobbled together a
- 11:59Speaker 7: play called Are You Now or Have You Ever Been?
- 12:02Speaker 7: In nineteen seventy two. That was a big hit off
- 12:05Speaker 7: Broadway then, and it has been revived by the Broadway
- 12:09Speaker 7: producer Jeffrey Richards, directed by Anna Shapiro, with a very
- 12:12Speaker 7: fine cast including Andrew McCarthy you may remember for Backpack Years,
- 12:19Speaker 7: and a few other really fine actors, And I think
- 12:23Speaker 7: the reason to revive the play is that we're having
- 12:25Speaker 7: a big discussion now about First Amendment issues, freedom of speech, communism, communists. Well, yeah,
- 12:33Speaker 7: well I have excellent yes, because we happened to have
- 12:35Speaker 7: a mayor who if you asked him, are you now
- 12:37Speaker 7: or have you ever been, he'd proudly say absolutely yes,
- 12:41Speaker 7: the times.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Have changed campaigned on it. That's okay, I won't go
- 12:46Speaker 2: too much further political. I see Christine getting nervous, But
- 12:48Speaker 2: this is really a fun, a fun what's your role
- 12:51Speaker 2: in it? Where do you come in?
- 12:53Speaker 7: So because of my when I graduated from college and
- 12:57Speaker 7: I was a struggling writer with absolutely no money, I
- 13:00Speaker 7: was working on a little tiny theater magazine and I
- 13:03Speaker 7: asked the great Eric Bentley to write some articles for me,
- 13:05Speaker 7: and he became my friend. And he had a big
- 13:09Speaker 7: baronial apartment. When I say baronial, I mean about fourteen
- 13:12Speaker 7: rooms on riverside, huge ceiling, you know, ceilings taller than
- 13:17Speaker 7: the Empire stable.
- 13:18Speaker 4: But he's obviously not a communist.
- 13:21Speaker 7: Well, his politics were quite interesting, because I'll get into
- 13:24Speaker 7: that in a second. But anyway, or.
- 13:26Speaker 4: Maybe he can afford to be a communist, that's the
- 13:28Speaker 4: other question.
- 13:28Speaker 7: Okay, I have to remember it was an apartment that
- 13:31Speaker 7: he bought in about nineteen fifty for thirty five thousand dollars.
- 13:36Speaker 7: But I had no money and he was living alone
- 13:40Speaker 7: in this big place, and he said, would you I'll
- 13:43Speaker 7: rent a room to you. So I rented a room
- 13:45Speaker 7: for two hundred and fifty dollars a month, which was
- 13:48Speaker 7: a god send to a kid with no money in
- 13:50Speaker 7: this fabulous apartment with his brilliant scholar and critic. And
- 13:54Speaker 7: I lived there for three years and I would have
- 13:56Speaker 7: dinner with him two or three nights a week, and
- 13:57Speaker 7: I had access to his library and everything I know
- 14:02Speaker 7: about the theater I learned with Eric Bentley. So I
- 14:06Speaker 7: mentioned it to Jeffrey Richards, my friendship with Eric, and
- 14:09Speaker 7: he said, would you do a couple of talkbacks in
- 14:12Speaker 7: post performance discussions? And I should said sure, And I said,
- 14:15Speaker 7: by the way, I could help you line up some people,
- 14:17Speaker 7: and I thought it would be interesting because they're still
- 14:20Speaker 7: around a lot of the blacklisted writers and actors, their
- 14:22Speaker 7: children are still with us red diaper babies as they
- 14:25Speaker 7: were called, And so I've lined up about five or
- 14:28Speaker 7: six of them who will talk about what it was
- 14:30Speaker 7: like to be in a household where one day your
- 14:32Speaker 7: parents have worked and the next day they're labeled communists
- 14:35Speaker 7: or suspective of communism, and their careers are over with,
- 14:38Speaker 7: completely over with. So that was the that's what we're
- 14:41Speaker 7: talking about and the residents of the play today. But
- 14:45Speaker 7: I don't want people to think that we're just approaching
- 14:48Speaker 7: it from the shall we say, National Public Radio New
- 14:51Speaker 7: York Times angle that oh, you know, a witch hunts
- 14:55Speaker 7: and of a hunt for communists and all. This was awful,
- 14:58Speaker 7: terrible as a concern, and as somebody who studies history,
- 15:02Speaker 7: there were indeed communists in Hollywood, and they did have
- 15:04Speaker 7: an agenda to try to influence the American people by
- 15:08Speaker 7: putting communist messages into movies back then. Now were they effective. No,
- 15:13Speaker 7: they were a bunch of bumbling idiots, as the testimony
- 15:16Speaker 7: makes clear, and a number of people were unfairly targeted,
- 15:20Speaker 7: unfairly tainted by the committee, and to the shame of
- 15:24Speaker 7: this country, did lose their livelihoods. So it is a
- 15:27Speaker 7: complicated issue, and because of that, I brought in some
- 15:30Speaker 7: conservative people like John pot Hortz from Commentary and Amanda Veyle,
- 15:35Speaker 7: who is the biographer of Rome Robbins, great choreographer, who
- 15:38Speaker 7: named names, who named names, But she sees it as
- 15:42Speaker 7: a far more complicated picture than just Baddy because you
- 15:45Speaker 7: named names. So we're trying to have a nuanced discussion
- 15:47Speaker 7: about what it all means. And to your point, Kevin,
- 15:49Speaker 7: about communism, it is ironic that back then in the fifties,
- 15:54Speaker 7: to be accused of communism, fairly or unfairly, it was
- 15:57Speaker 7: the end of your career. Now to proudly call yourself communism.
- 16:00Speaker 2: They get to run for mayor.
- 16:02Speaker 7: You're a hero of that. You're a hero of the
- 16:03Speaker 7: Democratic Party. And by the way, if your plattner up
- 16:06Speaker 7: there in Maine and knock women around and have Nazi tattoos,
- 16:10Speaker 7: if you probably declare yourself a Marxist, the Democratic Party
- 16:13Speaker 7: is still going to stick by you.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, sorry, you might actually even win. Well, Christine,
- 16:18Speaker 2: this is one of those things where, like anytime people
- 16:22Speaker 2: are going to go, it's going to be special and
- 16:24Speaker 2: different and cool. So you may want to see this
- 16:27Speaker 2: like several times, just based on what Michael's doing, because
- 16:30Speaker 2: of the people he's.
- 16:30Speaker 5: Gonna line up.
- 16:31Speaker 4: How long is the actual play, Michael? And then you
- 16:33Speaker 4: know how long is the talk back. What's the duration.
- 16:36Speaker 7: The play is about an hour and a half, and
- 16:37Speaker 7: then the talkback's about half hour, and then we take
- 16:41Speaker 7: some questions. The play, by the way, is is riveting.
- 16:44Speaker 7: I have not seen it in all I've never seen
- 16:46Speaker 7: it perform before. I only read it because the testimony
- 16:49Speaker 7: of these celebrities is fascinating. You have some like A Burrows,
- 16:55Speaker 7: who wrote Guys and Dolls, the hit musical. He's very funny,
- 16:59Speaker 7: he's very witty, but he's very weasily because he was
- 17:04Speaker 7: a communist. But he can't admit it because he's just
- 17:08Speaker 7: sold the musical Guys and Dolls to the studios for
- 17:12Speaker 7: two hundred thousand dollars, which was an enormous amount of
- 17:14Speaker 7: money back then. So he's desperately trying not to jeopardize
- 17:18Speaker 7: the deal. So he's trying to be funny and witty
- 17:21Speaker 7: and charm the committee even though he was a communist.
- 17:27Speaker 7: And then you have the great Paul Robeson.
- 17:29Speaker 4: Who rutgers along, by the way, Yeah.
- 17:33Speaker 7: Absolutely, there you are. And ropes In gave a very
- 17:36Speaker 7: famous speech where he did not deny being a communist,
- 17:39Speaker 7: but he brought into conversation the racism of the United States, slavery,
- 17:44Speaker 7: civil rights.
- 17:45Speaker 5: And all that.
- 17:46Speaker 7: So he challenges the committee on that front. And then
- 17:48Speaker 7: you have complicated people like Jerome Robbins and Elia Kazan,
- 17:52Speaker 7: the great director, who named names and who were blacklisted
- 17:55Speaker 7: by their Hollywood friends for naming names. Now the question
- 17:59Speaker 7: is why did Jerome Robin's name names. I can tell
- 18:01Speaker 7: you why because Eric Bentley told me the FBI followed
- 18:06Speaker 7: Robin's around to see if he was meeting with communists,
- 18:09Speaker 7: but they found him in bed with men, and they
- 18:12Speaker 7: blackmailed him, and they said they would expose him as
- 18:15Speaker 7: a homosexual unless he named names. So we have to
- 18:18Speaker 7: admit yet the committee played really cool, really played a
- 18:22Speaker 7: dirty handed with people back then.
- 18:23Speaker 2: All right, that's the great Michael Ridal, who is going
- 18:26Speaker 2: to come back with us right after these messages, and
- 18:29Speaker 2: we've got some more to discuss about this and other
- 18:31Speaker 2: fun stuff.
- 18:32Speaker 7: Don't go in.
- 18:38Speaker 6: From New York. It's Radio night Life with Kevin McCulloch.
- 18:43Speaker 2: So in the last segment, I was thinking to myself,
- 18:46Speaker 2: it's interesting that an actor named McCarthy is in Are
- 18:49Speaker 2: You now or Have You ever been? And Michael Reidal
- 18:53Speaker 2: and Christy Nicholas, that's ironic on two levels, because Andrew McCarthy,
- 18:58Speaker 2: the actor that every kind of everybody can thinks of
- 19:00Speaker 2: from the you know, the movies he made, is the namesake,
- 19:05Speaker 2: though not related to Andrew McCarthy, formerly of the Second District,
- 19:10Speaker 2: who was a prosecutor, who had nothing to do with
- 19:12Speaker 2: the McCarthy hearings or anything related to anything like it.
- 19:15Speaker 2: So lots of McCarthy, a couple of Andrews, and none
- 19:18Speaker 2: of them really part of what the subject of the
- 19:21Speaker 2: play was. But I'm sitting here thinking on all of
- 19:23Speaker 2: this while we're going to break last time.
- 19:25Speaker 3: So Michael Reidle is on he's talking about this wonderful
- 19:29Speaker 3: play that is, you know, focusing on the First Amendment issues,
- 19:33Speaker 3: with the McCarthy hearings and with the activities of Unamerican affairs.
- 19:38Speaker 4: I believe that's what it was called back in the forties.
- 19:41Speaker 3: It has a rotating cast, and I noticed it's funny
- 19:43Speaker 3: Andrew McCarthy is in the cast right now, but then
- 19:46Speaker 3: Molly Ringwald, who is staring with him in Pretty in Pink,
- 19:50Speaker 3: is going to be in the second cast.
- 19:51Speaker 4: Wouldn't it have been wise to have them together on stage?
- 19:54Speaker 4: I just say from a key r point of view.
- 19:57Speaker 7: Yes, yes, I suppose it's a scheduling, but you know,
- 19:59Speaker 7: well who also is in it. He plays one of
- 20:01Speaker 7: the senators grilling the suspected communist. Is Michael the Great
- 20:05Speaker 7: Michael McKeon, who you know, of course from Lenny and
- 20:08Speaker 7: Swiggy laverta Shirley. But what But he's wonderful in all
- 20:12Speaker 7: of those Christopher Guest movies.
- 20:14Speaker 4: Yeah, the Dog Show movies.
- 20:17Speaker 7: Yeah, brilliant. It's terrific just Andrew McCarthy, terrific performance. He
- 20:22Speaker 7: plays a forgotten actor named Larry Parks who's really only
- 20:26Speaker 7: claimed a fame before he was blacklisted. He was in
- 20:28Speaker 7: the joelsone story. He played Al Johlson brilliantly and won
- 20:30Speaker 7: the Oscar And I think Andrew captures the tragedy of
- 20:35Speaker 7: Larry Parks and the Huac hearings because Larry Parks had
- 20:38Speaker 7: been a Communist when he was a young idealistic man
- 20:41Speaker 7: in the nineteen thirties. He was never an intellectual, he
- 20:44Speaker 7: was never a political person. It was just something you
- 20:47Speaker 7: did when you were young an idealist. Again, let's not
- 20:49Speaker 7: forget you know, the Russians were our allies in World
- 20:51Speaker 7: War two, right, so with a number of people supported them,
- 20:54Speaker 7: and then he got out of the party and he's
- 20:56Speaker 7: so he plays at Andrew does so well as before
- 21:00Speaker 7: guy who says, well, why I was young, I was naive.
- 21:03Speaker 7: I didn't really know what communism was. I didn't know
- 21:06Speaker 7: about the crimes of Stalin. It's a long time ago.
- 21:08Speaker 7: Why am I caught up in this? In this net?
- 21:11Speaker 7: And it destroyed his It destroyed his career. And Andrew
- 21:14Speaker 7: McCarthy captures brilliantly the total befunnlement of this guy who
- 21:18Speaker 7: can't understand why something he did as a naive kid
- 21:22Speaker 7: is going to destroy his life. It's very poignant.
- 21:25Speaker 2: By the way, if you want to get tickets, Nycitycenter
- 21:27Speaker 2: dot org is where you go, Nycitycenter dot org all
- 21:32Speaker 2: one word, and they're well priced for a Broadway show
- 21:35Speaker 2: ny City Center, CityCenter dot org to do that. And
- 21:39Speaker 2: again it's playing.
- 21:40Speaker 3: It looks like they take a break in August, so
- 21:43Speaker 3: it'll run from now through July, and then they take
- 21:46Speaker 3: it to break in August, and then they come back
- 21:49Speaker 3: and then it ends September ninth. So there aren't too
- 21:53Speaker 3: many performances, so don't wait around to see those, because
- 21:56Speaker 3: this seems like It's a gem.
- 21:58Speaker 4: Michael Ridle. While we have you, we know that you're
- 22:02Speaker 4: very close to Clive Davis and we wish him well.
- 22:05Speaker 2: How is he doing.
- 22:06Speaker 7: He's doing okay. It's funny. We were last week. We
- 22:09Speaker 7: were on our way out to New Jersey to see
- 22:11Speaker 7: Air Supply because Clive discovered Air Supply and made their careers,
- 22:15Speaker 7: and he had.
- 22:16Speaker 2: Just one of many gold platform artists that he launched.
- 22:20Speaker 7: Yeah, and Clive had not seen the Air Supply guys
- 22:22Speaker 7: in thirty five years, so he was looking forward and
- 22:25Speaker 7: they were looking forward to seeing him. And then sadly,
- 22:28Speaker 7: as we were headed out there, he got a call
- 22:30Speaker 7: from his doctor and had to go to the hospital
- 22:32Speaker 7: to have some blood work done. But he's okay, he's resilient.
- 22:37Speaker 7: He's ninety four years old. He hosted a big Memorial
- 22:40Speaker 7: Day weekend bash at his country house that I was at,
- 22:44Speaker 7: and he was determined. I know he wasn't feeling well.
- 22:47Speaker 7: That Friday. We were headed air Supply, but I called
- 22:49Speaker 7: him and said, you sure, sure you want to go?
- 22:50Speaker 7: And he said, I've got to see these guys. I
- 22:52Speaker 7: haven't seen them in a long time. We're going. He
- 22:54Speaker 7: was in the car on the way out there and
- 22:56Speaker 7: had to turn around. Wow, go to see his doctors.
- 22:58Speaker 7: But what a legend. I mean every pretty much. If
- 23:02Speaker 7: anybody said my favorite singer songwriter of the last fifty years,
- 23:06Speaker 7: probably somebody that Clive Davis shepherd that person's career.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Yeah. I think a lot of people think about like
- 23:14Speaker 2: modern producers like David Foster and stuff, and they did
- 23:17Speaker 2: one tenth of the work that Clive Davis did.
- 23:20Speaker 7: Yeah, Clive is the last of that era. You know,
- 23:22Speaker 7: it was Moe Austin. David Geffen is still kind of around.
- 23:27Speaker 7: But those guys who you you guys remember growing up,
- 23:30Speaker 7: we knew the record producers. We knew Tommy Mottola, Clive Davis,
- 23:35Speaker 7: those names were as big as the artist that they
- 23:38Speaker 7: that they covered, and people like Clive were a fixture
- 23:40Speaker 7: at Page six, in a fixture at Studio fifty four,
- 23:43Speaker 7: a man about town, as all those guys were back down.
- 23:45Speaker 7: I couldn't tell you today who a big record producer
- 23:48Speaker 7: is if I guess they're not even called record producers anymore.
- 23:51Speaker 7: They're I don't know what they're called, streaming producer.
- 23:53Speaker 3: Album album producers that stream Yeah, I always associate Whitney
- 23:58Speaker 3: Houston with Clive Davis.
- 23:59Speaker 4: I mean that it was quite the relationship they had.
- 24:02Speaker 7: It's amazing when you go out with Clive and I've
- 24:06Speaker 7: gone a number of public events with him. The people,
- 24:10Speaker 7: especially young young African American women who just come up
- 24:15Speaker 7: to him and thank him for Whitney Houston because she
- 24:17Speaker 7: met so much, so much in their lives. And I
- 24:21Speaker 7: know Clive tried, He tried a great deal to help
- 24:23Speaker 7: Whitney through her difficult period of time. And the week
- 24:26Speaker 7: and before she was found dead in the Hilton Hotel
- 24:29Speaker 7: in Beverly Hills at his Grammy party, she was with
- 24:32Speaker 7: him and she swore to him that she was off
- 24:35Speaker 7: the drugs, off the alcohol, and the next thing was
- 24:38Speaker 7: she was going to try to quit smoking, and Clive
- 24:41Speaker 7: was very optimistic about how she was doing. So it
- 24:44Speaker 7: was an enormous Shockdann that she was found dead of
- 24:46Speaker 7: an overdose a few days later.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Tough stuff. Michael Reidle, never enough time with you, friend.
- 24:51Speaker 2: Thank you for being back with us tonight.
- 24:52Speaker 7: A pleasure. Good to see you guys, and good.
- 24:54Speaker 5: Luck with this show.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Okay, coming back, We've got another big important name and
- 24:59Speaker 2: place in location, an event to talk about. Don't go anywhere.
- 25:05Speaker 5: What a little moonline you can do.
- 25:07Speaker 6: It's Radio Night Live. Here's Kevin mccullo.
- 25:12Speaker 5: Welcome back.
- 25:12Speaker 2: It's fun Friday Radio Night Live. Besides Broadway, we love
- 25:16Speaker 2: to talk food as well. Christine, another special guest tonight,
- 25:19Speaker 2: I hogged the honors the first time. I'll give it
- 25:22Speaker 2: back to you now.
- 25:23Speaker 3: Well thanks well, especially because our guest, Lewis Rggierio is
- 25:28Speaker 3: first timer now at Radio Night Live, and hopefully you'll
- 25:31Speaker 3: come back many tell more visits. LJ. You get a
- 25:33Speaker 3: jacket that I love that you're the co owner of
- 25:39Speaker 3: Fresco Bi Scatto, one of the greatest restaurants in New
- 25:42Speaker 3: York City, and of course owned not only by you
- 25:46Speaker 3: and your I think it's your sister.
- 25:47Speaker 4: Is Jenny Your sister?
- 25:49Speaker 5: Yeah, my sister and my mother.
- 25:51Speaker 4: Okay, and your mother happens to.
- 25:52Speaker 5: Be Rosanna Scatto, the co anchor of Good Day New
- 25:56Speaker 5: York Fox five.
- 25:58Speaker 4: We we love your mom, and I'm sure we love
- 26:01Speaker 4: you too. We just have to get to know you
- 26:02Speaker 4: a little bit.
- 26:02Speaker 3: But well, why don't we meet you through food? So
- 26:06Speaker 3: tell us what's going on for the summer at Fresco
- 26:09Speaker 3: by Scotto.
- 26:10Speaker 8: Well, Fresco by Scotto has been open. We'll be open
- 26:13Speaker 8: for thirty three years this upcoming October. It was started
- 26:16Speaker 8: by my thank you. It was started by my grandmother
- 26:19Speaker 8: who mortgaged her house in Brooklyn to open up Fresco,
- 26:23Speaker 8: against the advice of my grandfather, but she did it anyways,
- 26:26Speaker 8: and here we are thirty three years later. It supported
- 26:29Speaker 8: our family for now three generations. I most recently came
- 26:34Speaker 8: on about two years ago and took over the helm
- 26:38Speaker 8: of things here at Fresco.
- 26:40Speaker 5: And we're very excited about this summer.
- 26:42Speaker 8: And why we're excited about this summers we just recently
- 26:45Speaker 8: did a major renovation in our bar area.
- 26:48Speaker 5: We added two beautiful TVs.
- 26:50Speaker 8: Behind the bar, custom wouldwork, custom marble bar counters. And
- 26:55Speaker 8: we're excited because FIFA's here and a lot of tourists
- 26:58Speaker 8: are coming into town. But a lot of New Yorkers
- 27:01Speaker 8: are also excited about FIFA. And I think what's exciting
- 27:06Speaker 8: is that people after work or during work, right because
- 27:09Speaker 8: these games are all over the place time wise. There's
- 27:12Speaker 8: games at eleven am, there's games at one am, and
- 27:16Speaker 8: they're looking for a place to get good food, get
- 27:18Speaker 8: good drinks, sit somewhere comfortably and watch the game. Not
- 27:21Speaker 8: everyone wants to go to the crowded bars and be
- 27:23Speaker 8: shoulder to shoulder screaming at the TV.
- 27:25Speaker 5: And so we're excited that at Fresco we.
- 27:28Speaker 8: Can provide you with a very comfortable, warm atmosphere. Also exciting.
- 27:33Speaker 8: You're just you won't be you know, packed in like
- 27:36Speaker 8: sardines at our bar area.
- 27:39Speaker 4: I'm sure you'll be comfortable and well fed. You also
- 27:42Speaker 4: have the Knicks tonight right.
- 27:45Speaker 2: Now, within it just a ye minutes, we got tip
- 27:47Speaker 2: off going on, so we you.
- 27:49Speaker 8: Know what's funny is we actually finished our bar renovation
- 27:52Speaker 8: Wednesday morning, right in.
- 27:54Speaker 5: Preparation for a game one. It was perfect timing.
- 27:58Speaker 8: We were doing a special during the Knicks Finals half
- 28:02Speaker 8: off cocktails the entire game. We have a special bar menu,
- 28:06Speaker 8: have a seafood tower, we have cutio pete tater tots
- 28:09Speaker 8: with truffles on top, we have lobster rolls. We're expanding
- 28:14Speaker 8: our horizons a bit, which will continue obviously through FIFA.
- 28:18Speaker 8: We're going to have special cocktails four FIFA specifically for
- 28:22Speaker 8: the teams, the major teams that are playing, major countries
- 28:24Speaker 8: that are playing. But yeah, we're very excited about our
- 28:28Speaker 8: new bar area and as always.
- 28:30Speaker 5: You know, our menu is the same.
- 28:33Speaker 8: We have Ma Moscato's meatball, which has been on our
- 28:35Speaker 8: menu for you know, thirty three years. We have our
- 28:37Speaker 8: potato and zucchini chips with gorganzola cheese.
- 28:40Speaker 5: We have our people.
- 28:41Speaker 4: They are so good. Now my mouth is watering. Okay, yeah, I'll.
- 28:45Speaker 2: Say, Christine, we haven't had dinner yet and here we're
- 28:48Speaker 2: you know, my.
- 28:49Speaker 4: My stomach is grumbling.
- 28:50Speaker 3: I have to.
- 28:50Speaker 4: I have to press the meat button.
- 28:52Speaker 5: I have a spot for you guys tonight, if you're interested.
- 28:54Speaker 4: Okay, we love it.
- 28:57Speaker 3: So tell us a bit about the special cocktails during
- 29:00Speaker 3: FIFA during the World Cup.
- 29:01Speaker 4: I think we were looking at that.
- 29:04Speaker 8: So we're going to basically, the cocktail special is going
- 29:09Speaker 8: to change based on the teams that are playing, whether
- 29:11Speaker 8: it's USA versus you know, Netherlands, or Italy versus Spain,
- 29:15Speaker 8: whatever the case is.
- 29:16Speaker 5: We're going to run a cocktail special on.
- 29:17Speaker 8: One of those teams each game, the first twenty six
- 29:22Speaker 8: minutes of each game. During during FIFA, it is free
- 29:27Speaker 8: draft Peroni on us the first twenty minutes twenty six
- 29:31Speaker 8: minutes of each game. We want people to come in,
- 29:34Speaker 8: We want people to enjoy we want people to eat
- 29:37Speaker 8: and we want people to feel like family. That's that
- 29:40Speaker 8: was the whole premise of my grandmother starting this restaurant
- 29:42Speaker 8: was an extension of our family dining room, and you know,
- 29:47Speaker 8: three generations later, we're just looking to continue that tradition.
- 29:51Speaker 3: No, it is a wonderful tradition. It's a wonderful feel.
- 29:53Speaker 3: Whenever you walk into Fresco Biscatto, I always feel so welcomed,
- 29:58Speaker 3: and even people that that have never been there before,
- 30:01Speaker 3: they walk in and they're greeted like family. And you
- 30:05Speaker 3: don't get that in many restaurants anymore, quite frankly, especially
- 30:09Speaker 3: you're in midtown, you know, so of course you cater
- 30:12Speaker 3: are a lot to the business community but also the tourists.
- 30:15Speaker 3: But the welcome that you give is so much fun.
- 30:17Speaker 3: Not to mention, sometimes there's dancing, and there may be
- 30:21Speaker 3: some like all of a sudden, the music pumps up
- 30:24Speaker 3: a little bit. Now you don't have to worry about it.
- 30:26Speaker 3: But they got rid of the cabaret loss, so something's
- 30:29Speaker 3: going okay, right direction.
- 30:31Speaker 5: That's right. Yeah, we have a DJ on Saturday nights.
- 30:34Speaker 8: We put a temporary pause on it during the summertime,
- 30:36Speaker 8: but pumps September after Labor Day.
- 30:38Speaker 5: We have a DJ every Saturday night.
- 30:41Speaker 8: It tends to get a little bit more fun and
- 30:44Speaker 8: rowdy and the Napkins star waving in the air. That
- 30:48Speaker 8: usually happens around eight thirty ish on Saturday nights. But
- 30:52Speaker 8: we're really putting an emphasis on our bar area for
- 30:55Speaker 8: the summertime, especially for FIFA, especially for the Knicks, and
- 30:59Speaker 8: listen once next are done.
- 31:00Speaker 5: You have the Yankees, you have the Nets, and then
- 31:04Speaker 5: you know summer is over, you have the Giants, you
- 31:06Speaker 5: have the Jets.
- 31:07Speaker 4: Don't forget the US Open.
- 31:08Speaker 3: Remember that's a good thing too, you know, especially on
- 31:11Speaker 3: the East Side where you are, there's you know a
- 31:13Speaker 3: lot of folks stay there in those hotels.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Well you had me it cuts your pepe tater tots. Yeah,
- 31:21Speaker 2: I didn't hear anything after that. I was just so
- 31:23Speaker 2: focused on it.
- 31:24Speaker 8: We did a little test run of them yesterday and
- 31:27Speaker 8: there and dangerous, very dangerous.
- 31:31Speaker 2: And you put truffle on them.
- 31:33Speaker 5: We put truffle. We've put freshly shamed truffles right on top.
- 31:36Speaker 5: Oh my gosh.
- 31:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not anywhere near Midtown tonight, but man, if I,
- 31:42Speaker 2: if I, if I could get over there, I totally
- 31:45Speaker 2: would what an incredible opportunity, and just just as a
- 31:51Speaker 2: New Yorker LJ. I'm just curious because you know your
- 31:54Speaker 2: mom's big time TV personality and so forth. Thirty years
- 31:59Speaker 2: plus for the I mean, how special is this for
- 32:02Speaker 2: everybody that's got a restaurant in the city this week?
- 32:05Speaker 5: Well, I think it's you know, I'm thirty two years old.
- 32:08Speaker 8: I've been a diehard Knicks fan of my whole life,
- 32:10Speaker 8: so I've been waiting for this moment my entire life.
- 32:12Speaker 8: But I think the energy in the city is just
- 32:15Speaker 8: this last I would say, really two weeks since we've
- 32:17Speaker 8: gone on this this playoff run has been electric and
- 32:22Speaker 8: New Yorkers have been dying for this moment to happen,
- 32:25Speaker 8: and we're finally here.
- 32:26Speaker 5: So I think people.
- 32:27Speaker 2: Stole one from arguably the best team in the league
- 32:30Speaker 2: on the court. So I don't know, there's no reason,
- 32:34Speaker 2: like you have on Gord advantage now, there's no reason
- 32:36Speaker 2: why they shouldn't bring it home. But it'll be interesting
- 32:38Speaker 2: to see. Hey, thank you for stopping by, Please come
- 32:41Speaker 2: on back. Thank you so much for jacket, But you've
- 32:42Speaker 2: got to be a few more times before you qualify.
- 32:45Speaker 5: I'm here whenever you need me. Kevin, thank you so
- 32:47Speaker 5: much for having me.
- 32:48Speaker 2: All right when we come back, Christine's got all your
- 32:50Speaker 2: tips your weekend, don't go anywhere.
- 32:57Speaker 6: Once again from New York Heres Radio, Night Life and
- 33:01Speaker 6: Kevin McCullough.
- 33:04Speaker 2: Welcome back, Kevin McCullough, Christine Nicholas. Glad to have you
- 33:06Speaker 2: with us. Thank you to Michael Harrison and the gang
- 33:09Speaker 2: at Talker's USA who had their conference today, and Christine.
- 33:13Speaker 2: He had me on a late afternoon panel around three o'clock.
- 33:16Speaker 2: I was chatting about what it means to have long
- 33:20Speaker 2: lastingness in this business. And I guess I guess I'm
- 33:23Speaker 2: old enough to qualify for that now I don't know.
- 33:25Speaker 2: But anyway, it was a fun.
- 33:27Speaker 4: Day career in radio.
- 33:29Speaker 2: That's it. Well and all the pitfalls that come with it.
- 33:32Speaker 2: What do we have this weekend? What fun stuff can
