- 0:00Speaker 1: And the Kraken, a power play goal.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Welcome to the Kraken Post Game Show, powered by the
- 0:06Speaker 2: iHeartRadio app, where you can hear the Kraken anytime, anywhere.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Now for an in-depth look at tonight's Kraken game. It's
- 0:14Speaker 2: the Kraken Post Game on the Global Credit Union Kraken
- 0:17Speaker 2: Audio Network.
- 0:21Speaker 3: Welcome back inside of Climate Pledge Arena, alongside Al Kaniski.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Everett Fitzhugh back with you. A 5-1 defeat for the Kraken.
- 0:30Speaker 3: at the hands of the Minnesota Wild. It really started, partner,
- 0:34Speaker 3: from the opening puck drop that was Kirill Kaprizov blowing
- 0:38Speaker 3: by the Kraken defense. A couple of breakaways defensively. The
- 0:42Speaker 3: Kraken were not ready for here. That was one of them.
- 0:45Speaker 3: 1-0 early. Berkley Catton continuing his hot streak as of late,
- 0:49Speaker 3: but that's the only offense Seattle could muster here tonight
- 0:53Speaker 3: as they left a lot of meat behind. On that
- 0:55Speaker 3: proverbial bone in a 5-1 loss.
- 0:58Speaker 4: Yeah, it was a great response to that first goal.
- 1:02Speaker 4: For the last few games, they've been getting that first one.
- 1:05Speaker 4: But it was a good response to get things tied
- 1:07Speaker 4: up at the end of the first period. But in
- 1:09Speaker 4: the second period, Coleman, Mata, Erickson-Eck, all scoring goals. That's
- 1:14Speaker 4: when the game took a turn for Seattle. They just
- 1:17Speaker 4: weren't able to come back from that point.
- 1:19Speaker 3: You know, you and I talk a lot about calling
- 1:21Speaker 3: balls and strikes, and for as good as Philip Grubauer
- 1:24Speaker 3: has been playing the last week and a half, two weeks,
- 1:27Speaker 3: I think tonight's a game that Joey Decor would love
- 1:30Speaker 3: a couple of do-overs. I'm not ready to blame him
- 1:33Speaker 3: for every goal that was let in, but I do know,
- 1:36Speaker 3: I bet you there's at least two or three that
- 1:39Speaker 3: he would like to have back and take a better
- 1:42Speaker 3: line at.
- 1:43Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, you give him an opportunity to make
- 1:46Speaker 4: saves on those two goals. It's still a 3-1 hockey
- 1:48Speaker 4: game like You still have to generate enough offense to
- 1:51Speaker 4: score more than one goal in most hockey games if
- 1:54Speaker 4: you're going to win it. So both ends of the
- 1:56Speaker 4: ice needed some work here tonight. The only bright spot,
- 1:58Speaker 4: not the only bright spot, one of the bright spots
- 2:00Speaker 4: on the game is the Kraken go perfect on their
- 2:02Speaker 4: penalty kill two for two.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Like that one.
- 2:05Speaker 3: So, I mean, you and I, we talk a lot
- 2:08Speaker 3: about winning the third period or using something to build
- 2:13Speaker 3: off of. The Kraken have a little bit of a
- 2:15Speaker 3: lengthy break coming up here. They don't play again until Wednesday.
- 2:18Speaker 3: So they've got three full days off before Toronto comes
- 2:22Speaker 3: in here. The Kraken will go to Calgary next Friday,
- 2:27Speaker 3: and then they'll have four more days off until their
- 2:30Speaker 3: next game against the Flames on that Wednesday. So for Seattle,
- 2:35Speaker 3: I mean, what can you take from this game into
- 2:39Speaker 3: that Wednesday tilt against the Leafs?
- 2:41Speaker 4: Well, the positives, like I said, I mentioned the penalty kill,
- 2:44Speaker 4: but you can't win a game with a perfect penalty kill.
- 2:47Speaker 4: you've got to be able to generate offense. More than
- 2:51Speaker 4: one goal in the game. So it's got to be
- 2:52Speaker 4: the other end of the ice. Obviously, we talked about
- 2:55Speaker 4: Joey Decord, but it's not just Joey Decord. It's the
- 2:57Speaker 4: defensive zone as a whole. It's those gaps through the
- 3:01Speaker 4: neutral zone that were a result of the initial goal
- 3:04Speaker 4: that Kaprizov scored on the breakaway. So taking away those
- 3:08Speaker 4: high-powered offensive opportunities that we saw tonight. Listen, Toronto's got
- 3:11Speaker 4: some of the same superstars on their team as well.
- 3:14Speaker 4: So The approach to that game isn't going to be
- 3:17Speaker 4: much different than this one. It's just that now you've
- 3:19Speaker 4: learned a few things from this one that hopefully you
- 3:21Speaker 4: can apply in that one and limit the number of
- 3:24Speaker 4: chances that Toronto gets.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Well, Toronto, they just took down the Oilers on the
- 3:28Speaker 3: road in Edmonton 7-2 tonight. So that'll wrap up their
- 3:34Speaker 3: long road trip when they come in here on Wednesday. 5-1,
- 3:37Speaker 3: crack and fall at home here to Minnesota. Game four
- 3:40Speaker 3: of this homestand coming up on Wednesday. against Calgary. Al,
- 3:44Speaker 3: take us home.
- 3:44Speaker 4: Yeah, key takeaways to me tonight, too many grade A
- 3:46Speaker 4: opportunities for Minnesota right from the puck drop 26 seconds in,
- 3:50Speaker 4: including that one. We talked about Decord a little bit.
- 3:53Speaker 4: He ends the night with an 8.86 save percentage, stopping
- 3:56Speaker 4: 31 of 35. Not all of the goals were his fault,
- 3:59Speaker 4: but I'm certain that he'd like to have a shot
- 4:01Speaker 4: at a couple of them. Then the last key takeaway,
- 4:03Speaker 4: the power play goes 0 for 3 tonight. That's been
- 4:05Speaker 4: an effective area for Seattle over the last handful of games,
- 4:09Speaker 4: but their PK was 2 for 2, so... I always
- 4:11Speaker 4: like to end things on a bright spot on the
- 4:13Speaker 4: key takeaways. Well, McKay, three stars tonight. Third star goes
- 4:17Speaker 4: to Berkley Catton grabbing the first goal of the game.
- 4:21Speaker 4: Second star goes to Jewel Erickson-Eck. He had a goal
- 4:24Speaker 4: and an assist. And your first star tonight was Kirill Kaprizov. He, too,
- 4:28Speaker 4: had a goal and an assist. Three stars of the
- 4:30Speaker 4: game brought to you by AAA of Washington who give

- 4:39Speaker 3: That'll do it here for us from Climate Pledge Arena.
- 4:43Speaker 3: The Kraken with a 5-1 defeat here to the wild.
- 4:46Speaker 3: They will wrap up their homestand on Wednesday against the Leafs.
- 4:50Speaker 3: But for now, we go across the street. Mike Benton
- 4:53Speaker 3: and special guest Anderson Hurst.
- 4:56Speaker 1: We all have a thirst. A thirst. We have a
- 4:59Speaker 1: thirst for Anders Hurst.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Coming up on the other side, Kraken Fall 5-1.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Mike Benton, take it away. You are definitely a loyal
- 5:06Speaker 1: morning listener, I can tell that, Everett. Thanks a lot, guys, here,
- 5:09Speaker 1: and certainly it was a battle uphill here from the
- 5:12Speaker 1: very first shift. The Kraken, though, fall 2-1 here on
- 5:16Speaker 1: this homestand as Minnesota scores on their first shift of
- 5:20Speaker 1: the game, and that would be an omen as the
- 5:22Speaker 1: second-best team in the NHL this year for most minutes
- 5:25Speaker 1: playing with a lead. Found that hard to come by
- 5:27Speaker 1: here for tonight, and the Kraken fall 5-1 to the Wilds.
- 5:30Speaker 1: And now their winless skid on home ice against Minnesota,
- 5:32Speaker 1: stretching to eight consecutive games as the Kirill Kaprizov, Joel Eriksson-Ek,
- 5:38Speaker 1: and Matt Boldy line combine for five points here in
- 5:41Speaker 1: this one. Berkeley Cat, now the only crack and goal
- 5:44Speaker 1: back at 10-13, a period one. We'll recap how all
- 5:47Speaker 1: this happened, plus more, including our highlights, our out-of-town scores,
- 5:50Speaker 1: more reaction from downstairs. And Anders and I will get
- 5:54Speaker 1: to your reaction, by the way. Text us 49451 Tacoma Dodge.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Text line again. 49451 with your reaction from tonight. We'll
- 6:02Speaker 1: get to you later on here. Your final score once again,
- 6:05Speaker 1: Wild 5, Kraken 1, back in a bit. This is

- 7:11Speaker 7: Ever see people move an umbrella at a tailgate to
- 7:14Speaker 7: cover the beer coolers or fill their only sink in
- 7:17Speaker 7: a hotel room with ice? It's actually kind of crazy
- 7:20Speaker 7: the lengths people will go to make sure their beer
- 7:22Speaker 7: is ice cold. But no matter what people do, one
- 7:26Speaker 7: thing is pretty clear. Because it's not a beer unless

- 8:31Speaker 1: at SeattleKraken.com slash tickets. Well, Minnesota scoring on the first
- 8:36Speaker 1: shift of the game certainly was ominous here on the
- 8:39Speaker 1: Kraken side as Kirill Kaprizov's line gets going and they
- 8:42Speaker 1: combine for five points in this one with the Kraken
- 8:45Speaker 1: still trying to figure out how to solve Minnesota overall
- 8:49Speaker 1: and on home ice. And as far as the home
- 8:52Speaker 1: ice part of that, the Kraken now have to wait
- 8:55Speaker 1: again until later to snap an eight-game winless skid against
- 8:58Speaker 1: the Wild as your final score winds up Minnesota 5.
- 9:02Speaker 1: And the Kraken 1 as the Kraken now fall to
- 9:05Speaker 1: 2-1 on this four-game homestand. Mike Benton again with you
- 9:08Speaker 1: back live across the street back at Tom's Watch Bar.
- 9:11Speaker 1: The Kraken now 7-4-1 on the campaign, 15 points. Minnesota
- 9:15Speaker 1: improving to 8-3-1. as they once again now improve to
- 9:22Speaker 1: 1-1-1 on their side of their road trip. A 5-gamer
- 9:27Speaker 1: in the wild now with 16 points on the campaign.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Bigger part in the record now at 7-3-2. Time now
- 9:33Speaker 1: for the highlights of this one, and this Seattle Kraken

- 9:50Speaker 1: First shift of the game, what do we learn about
- 9:52Speaker 1: the threat that Minnesota's top line has in store?
- 9:55Speaker 3: The Wilds to the near half wall.
- 9:58Speaker 1: This one flipped up the ice.
- 9:59Speaker 3: Now Kaprizov sprung free down the near side, backhand on,
- 10:03Speaker 3: and he scores. 26 seconds in, in his 12th game
- 10:11Speaker 3: of the season, Kirill Kaprizov with his 12th goal of
- 10:16Speaker 3: the campaign, and the Wild.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Quickly out to a 1-0 lead.
- 10:19Speaker 4: Yeah, the Wild with a clear up the left boards,
- 10:21Speaker 4: Kaprizov reads it perfectly, he's got a step on Vince Dunn,
- 10:25Speaker 4: doesn't look back, break away, faked shot, backhand, beats Joey Decord,
- 10:30Speaker 4: 1-0 Minnesota.
- 10:32Speaker 1: That's the second time Kirill Kaprizov has scored in the
- 10:35Speaker 1: opening minute of his career. That last happening on March
- 10:38Speaker 1: 2nd of 2023. Joel Erickson at Quinn Hughes had the
- 10:42Speaker 1: assist on the play as Kaprizov got behind the pack
- 10:45Speaker 1: and beat Joey Decord with a backhand deke 26 seconds
- 10:49Speaker 1: into the game. The Kraken though showing some fight, nearly
- 10:52Speaker 1: tying the game as Ben Myers later nearly split the defense,
- 10:56Speaker 1: but that was stopped by Jesper Volstead. Then the Kraken.
- 10:59Speaker 1: found a way to go up a man with Berkeley
- 11:02Speaker 1: Canton drawing a penalty with McCarron off for tripping at
- 11:06Speaker 1: 8-12 and the Kraken looking to draw even. Shane Wright,
- 11:10Speaker 1: left side, up top to Montour.
- 11:12Speaker 3: Right wing point, in front, here's Berkley.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Catton, scores!
- 11:19Speaker 3: Montour down low to Kapo Gakko, he delays, finds Catton.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Who goes under the bar and in, extending his point streak.
- 11:29Speaker 3: To four games, and the Kraken on.
- 11:31Speaker 1: The board, it's a 1-1 tie, 9-47. to play in
- 11:35Speaker 1: the opening 20.
- 11:35Speaker 4: Oh, it's an excellent pass by Brandon Montour at the
- 11:38Speaker 4: point down to Kapo Kako on the left post. Both
- 11:42Speaker 4: wild penalty killers collapse towards Kako. He recognizes it, puts
- 11:46Speaker 4: it across to Berkley Catton, who was top shelf, shorts
- 11:50Speaker 4: or glove side.
- 11:50Speaker 1: This game's tied at one. Nine points in 12 games
- 11:54Speaker 1: at age 20. Not too shabby to begin this regular season.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Berkley Catton, not with a power play goal, but a
- 12:00Speaker 1: power play influence goal. Michael McCarron fresh out of the box.
- 12:04Speaker 1: And Catton stashing it from a sharp angle right side.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Impressive as it gets. At 10-13, a period one. That
- 12:10Speaker 1: tied it at one with Kapo Kako and Brandon Montour.
- 12:14Speaker 1: getting the assist on the play, and the Kraken chasing
- 12:17Speaker 1: down Minnesota by the end of one with a game
- 12:20Speaker 1: tied at one. But as breakaways were a theme, here's
- 12:24Speaker 1: what the Wild had in store early in period two.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Al Coleman, out of the box, a breakaway, scores!
- 12:33Speaker 3: Second time tonight, Kraken defense failed to pick up a
- 12:38Speaker 3: Minnesota Wilds streaking player. This time it's Blake Coleman fresh
- 12:43Speaker 3: out the box.
- 12:44Speaker 1: He goes in by Decord, and the Wilds back up 2-1.
- 12:47Speaker 4: Yeah, Brandon Montour makes a diving attempt to take that
- 12:51Speaker 4: puck out of the air, but it's one of those
- 12:53Speaker 4: flip passes right up to the neutral zone, and Blake
- 12:55Speaker 4: Coleman's cutting through the neutral zone after coming out of
- 12:58Speaker 4: the box. He beats Decord on that glove side down low,
- 13:01Speaker 4: 2-1 Minnesota.
- 13:03Speaker 1: That hurt because the Kraken squandering a power play to
- 13:05Speaker 1: open period two after Coleman was sent off for interference
- 13:08Speaker 1: on the goalkeeper. And then Coleman sprung out of the box,
- 13:11Speaker 1: made a 2-1. On the breakaway goal, Matt Kirstead had
- 13:15Speaker 1: the assist on the play with Coleman getting eventually his
- 13:18Speaker 1: first of two on the ninth. The Kraken in grave
- 13:21Speaker 1: danger of going down further and having to kill off
- 13:24Speaker 1: a four-minute double minor power play after Quinn Hughes was
- 13:27Speaker 1: high-sticked by Riker Evans. The Kraken, though, got the kill,
- 13:31Speaker 1: maintained the deficit, but it then grew after Ole Matta
- 13:35Speaker 1: Buried his first goal in a wild jersey at 11.33.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Ryan Hartman had the assist to make it 3-1. Then
- 13:41Speaker 1: Joel Eriksson-Eck going where he goes and does his work,
- 13:45Speaker 1: usually front of the net. Got a third goal of
- 13:47Speaker 1: the season 13 minutes into the second period. Matt Boldy
- 13:50Speaker 1: and Kirill Kaprizov. had the assist on the play to
- 13:53Speaker 1: make it 4-1. That line certainly made an impact. The
- 13:57Speaker 1: Kraken again, early power play in period three, couldn't get
- 14:00Speaker 1: any closer, and the Wild wrapping things up with an
- 14:03Speaker 1: empty net goal from Coleman at 16-24, period three, his
- 14:06Speaker 1: second of the night, and fourth on the season to
- 14:09Speaker 1: make it 5-1. Wild over the Kraken. and that holding
- 14:12Speaker 1: up as your final score. Shots on net, 36-24 in
- 14:16Speaker 1: favor of the Wild. Power plays wise, Minnesota goes 0-2,
- 14:21Speaker 1: and the Kraken, this certainly made an impact in this game,
- 14:24Speaker 1: go 0-3 as Jesper Volstead gets the win in net.
- 14:27Speaker 1: 23 saves on 24 shots. His record now improves to 7-2-2.
- 14:33Speaker 1: The loss in net, 2-2, tough night for him. Four
- 14:36Speaker 1: goals allowed on 35 shots. He is now 3-3. on
- 14:40Speaker 1: the young season. Time now for the Coors Light Chillest
- 14:42Speaker 1: Moments of the game and again, Kraken fans, you can
- 14:44Speaker 1: win your chance to sit in the Coors Light silver seats.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Go to CoorsLight.com forward slash Seattle Kraken to enter. Must
- 14:51Speaker 1: be 21 years of age. No purchase necessary. Coors Light,
- 14:55Speaker 1: choose chill, celebrate responsibly. Moment number one. It was four
- 15:00Speaker 1: on four in the second period and then matters were
- 15:02Speaker 1: complicated on the high stick by Riker Evans to Quinn Hughes.
- 15:06Speaker 1: It was Hughes who drew blood, Evans off for four minutes,
- 15:09Speaker 1: and the Kraken in grave danger of falling behind further.
- 15:13Speaker 1: But the penalty kill, certainly showing up, got the full
- 15:16Speaker 1: kill and maintained the deficit, which certainly gave the Kraken
- 15:20Speaker 1: some life, but Minnesota eventually getting a pair of goals.
- 15:23Speaker 1: But the Kraken still with some chance to get back
- 15:25Speaker 1: into it. Third period, they had a power play carrying
- 15:29Speaker 1: over from a Tyler Pitlick tripping penalty late in the
- 15:31Speaker 1: second period. but no shots on net after the opening
- 15:34Speaker 1: puck drop on that man advantage for the third period,
- 15:37Speaker 1: and that certainly made a big impact here in the
- 15:40Speaker 1: Kraken Fortunes, where they fall 5-1 to Minnesota this evening.
- 15:45Speaker 1: Time now for the big win, brought to you by
- 15:47Speaker 1: the Evergreen Council on Problem Gambling. We go to Edmonton

- 16:14Speaker 1: Toronto cruising past Edmonton, 7-2. They're now pushing their win
- 16:19Speaker 1: streak to four consecutive games. Neylander getting two goals, including

- 24:58Speaker 1: back to Seattle Kraken hockey on the Kraken Audio Network.
- 25:02Speaker 3: Shane Wright, left side, up top to Montour. Right wing point,
- 25:06Speaker 3: in front, here's Berkley Katton, scores! Montour down low to Kapogako,
- 25:15Speaker 3: he delays, finds Katton, who goes under the bar and in,
- 25:20Speaker 3: extending his point streak to four games, and the bracket
- 25:23Speaker 3: on the board.
- 25:26Speaker 1: But Berkeley Catton getting his ninth point in 12 games.
- 25:30Speaker 1: He is certainly showing up and doing that on a
- 25:32Speaker 1: consistent basis, and it looks so good off that 1-1
- 25:35Speaker 1: tie when he scored back at 10-13 of period one.
- 25:38Speaker 1: And that Berkeley Catton goal is our McDelivery of the

- 26:25Speaker 1: Up next here for the Kraken on the road, it
- 26:27Speaker 1: will be a one-off pit stop, and that will be against,
- 26:31Speaker 1: guess who, the Calgary Flames. They have seen them a ton,
- 26:34Speaker 1: preseason and regular season. This will be the third of
- 26:38Speaker 1: four official matchups going down Friday, October 30th on Hallow's Eve,
- 26:43Speaker 1: by the way. Third matchup for these two teams, and
- 26:47Speaker 1: the last time the Kraken will ever see Scotiabank Saddledome.
- 26:50Speaker 1: They're looking to push their record to 3-0 against the
- 26:52Speaker 1: Flames this season. And so far, they have had their way,
- 26:55Speaker 1: now scoring the Flames 12-2 in two combined wins. By
- 27:00Speaker 1: the way, we'll also have a full watch party right
- 27:02Speaker 1: back here at Tom's Watch Bar, pre-game to post-game, and
- 27:05Speaker 1: we certainly hope that. you can join us. So the
- 27:08Speaker 1: Kraken fall 5-1 tonight where it looked good after period
- 27:12Speaker 1: one and the Kraken rescuing maybe a game that was
- 27:14Speaker 1: getting out of hand just 26 seconds in from Kirill
- 27:17Speaker 1: Kaprizov's 12th goal of the season courtesy of a breakaway.
- 27:21Speaker 1: Berkley Catton tying things up. But the Wild eventually pulling
- 27:24Speaker 1: away in period two with three unanswered goals in that frame.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Blake Coleman by the way ending it with an empty
- 27:31Speaker 1: net goal he scored twice here in this one. So
- 27:34Speaker 1: the Kraken looking to Get payback here down the road
- 27:37Speaker 1: in their second matchup for these two teams of this
- 27:40Speaker 1: regular season. Our next broadcast is next Wednesday. The Kraken

- 31:31Speaker 1: Final score, Wild 5, Kraken 1 in a game where
- 31:34Speaker 1: The Kraken never led, and they found this one an

- 31:40Speaker 1: A goal to now push this point streak to four

- 32:17Speaker 1: get to it here during the course of coverage here
- 32:21Speaker 1: at Tom's Watch Bar. Anders Hurst, as Everett said, and
- 32:25Speaker 1: as your guy Chuck Powell says, we have a thirst
- 32:28Speaker 1: for Hurst. I got a thirst for a Diet Coke
- 32:30Speaker 1: right here. Not to say that food kind of like
- 32:32Speaker 1: cures all ails because the Kraken and our feelings are
- 32:35Speaker 1: kind of still, you know, smarting here from a night
- 32:37Speaker 1: like this. But, man, it doesn't get much better than
- 32:41Speaker 1: the prime rib dip right back here at this joint.
- 32:43Speaker 17: Yeah, I mean, it makes you feel good after a
- 32:45Speaker 17: tough Kraken loss, 5-1 against the Wild for sure. No
- 32:48Speaker 17: better place than Tom's Watch Bar, right across the street
- 32:50Speaker 17: from Climate Pledge Arena. A little bit of a reality
- 32:53Speaker 17: check for the Seattle Kraken. They end their three-game winning streak. And,
- 32:59Speaker 17: you know, you've got to beat the teams that are
- 33:02Speaker 17: in front of you, right? And the Kraken have had
- 33:04Speaker 17: a relatively easy-ish schedule to start the season with multiple
- 33:09Speaker 17: games against the Calgary Flames. You got, you know, the
- 33:15Speaker 17: last game against Utah was a great win, of course,
- 33:18Speaker 17: as well. A couple Philadelphia games thrown in there. But
- 33:21Speaker 17: for the Kraken, I think for the early part of
- 33:23Speaker 17: the season, it's been defined as you're beating the teams
- 33:26Speaker 17: that you should beat, but you're are somewhat struggling against
- 33:30Speaker 17: teams that have championship aspirations. Now, we can argue whether
- 33:34Speaker 17: that is the case for Utah or not. A lot
- 33:37Speaker 17: of people expected that to be a really good team
- 33:39Speaker 17: this year, so that was a big win on Thursday
- 33:41Speaker 17: night for the Seattle Kraken. Today was a kind of
- 33:43Speaker 17: next step forward for the Kraken. If they were to
- 33:45Speaker 17: come and put another really good performance against one of
- 33:49Speaker 17: the best teams in the NHL in the Minnesota Wild,
- 33:53Speaker 17: that would have really turned some heads. And not that
- 33:57Speaker 17: It's necessarily doom and gloom at this point for Seattle.
- 34:01Speaker 17: I think there's still a lot of positive thoughts from
- 34:04Speaker 17: the early portion of the season, but a missed opportunity
- 34:08Speaker 17: to really take that next step forward for this team.
- 34:12Speaker 17: There's obviously tons of games left, still very early in
- 34:15Speaker 17: the season, but you saw the gap in class tonight
- 34:18Speaker 17: from the Minnesota Wilds to the Seattle Crackers.
- 34:20Speaker 1: And guess where we begin with that? The top line.
- 34:23Speaker 1: because they did a lot of work tonight. They ran
- 34:27Speaker 1: their business in the crack and really had tough times
- 34:29Speaker 1: answering them here from out of the gate. So I
- 34:32Speaker 1: did mention the Tacoma Dodge text line also with the voicemails,
- 34:35Speaker 1: but I think we're getting some interest here for phone calls. So, folks,
- 34:38Speaker 1: we're going to go ahead and open the phones if
- 34:39Speaker 1: you want to go ahead and call us right there.
- 34:41Speaker 1: The number to call us, 206-286-9595. Again, that's 206-286-9595. 206-286-9595.
- 34:48Speaker 1: If you want to call, we'll put you on the air,
- 34:51Speaker 1: and we'll get to your reaction here coming up very,
- 34:53Speaker 1: very shortly again.
- 34:54Speaker 12: 206-286-9595.
- 34:55Speaker 1: Here for me, I think we discuss who defines the
- 35:02Speaker 1: best forward group for Minnesota versus who defines the best
- 35:06Speaker 1: and most productive forward group here on the crack. Because
- 35:08Speaker 1: I think this kind of put the spotlight on this
- 35:11Speaker 1: conversation with Maybe who do you think gets and deserves
- 35:14Speaker 1: the most ice time here for this game? Without question,
- 35:17Speaker 1: it's Minnesota. I think we all knew they were coming
- 35:20Speaker 1: in hot right now. Kaprizov, who's playing unconscious. Matt Boldy,
- 35:24Speaker 1: who is very, very hard to handle. And Joel Eriksson,
- 35:27Speaker 1: once again, you know where he's going. Right toward the
- 35:29Speaker 1: front of the net, and they combine for five points. Anders,
- 35:32Speaker 1: I've been really, really curious about this. The question was
- 35:36Speaker 1: posed to Lane Lambert earlier this week. How long until
- 35:40Speaker 1: maybe you look at giving the Berkeley Cat in line
- 35:43Speaker 1: more ice time? Granted, tonight, he scored not a power
- 35:47Speaker 1: play goal, but a power play influence goal, so you
- 35:50Speaker 1: have to take that into account. He's not playing and
- 35:52Speaker 1: working a five-on-five for that goal. He doesn't have his
- 35:56Speaker 1: set of linemates out for that play. He was on
- 35:59Speaker 1: the ice with Mackie Samaskevich, Shane Wright as well, so
- 36:03Speaker 1: two of the three, but under different conditions also. Kapo
- 36:06Speaker 1: Kaka was out there for that power play, but yet
- 36:08Speaker 1: Berkeley-Catton continues to score. One thing that caught my eye,
- 36:13Speaker 1: this line had one defensive zone start at 5-on-5. That's
- 36:18Speaker 1: usually pretty telltale. Context matters, of course, if you're going
- 36:22Speaker 1: to be seeing them with more responsibilities and more ice time.
- 36:27Speaker 1: So I'll throw it to you. I'll throw it here
- 36:30Speaker 1: to the Tacoma-Dash text line, 49451. Do you want to
- 36:31Speaker 1: see them? And do they deserve to get more ice
- 36:34Speaker 1: time here at 5-on-5? Yeah, I mean, at this point,
- 36:36Speaker 1: I would say yes. It is early in the season.
- 36:39Speaker 17: I understand the thought process behind, you know, wanting Berkeley
- 36:44Speaker 17: Cat to be in the best position to succeed, right?
- 36:46Speaker 17: You want to get him good matchups against maybe not
- 36:49Speaker 17: the top line of the opposing team. That way he
- 36:52Speaker 17: can have, you know, build confidence, get some offensive zone time.
- 36:58Speaker 17: And that's how he's had the success earlier today.
- 37:01Speaker 1: In this season.
- 37:02Speaker 17: But at the same time, when are the best players
- 37:05Speaker 17: on the Kraken going to be treated like the best players, right?
- 37:08Speaker 17: If I were to tell you we need a goal
- 37:10Speaker 17: right now, there's one minute left in the game, what line,
- 37:15Speaker 17: what forward line would you want on.
- 37:17Speaker 1: The ice right now?
- 37:18Speaker 17: And I would argue it's the Berkeley-Catton, and I know
- 37:21Speaker 17: they kind of shifted a little bit with McCann's injury tonight,
- 37:23Speaker 17: but the Berkeley-Catton-Capo-Caco-Shane right line is probably the best forward
- 37:29Speaker 17: line that has been going early in the season. Maybe
- 37:33Speaker 17: you could even argue the fourth line. And that's been
- 37:36Speaker 17: something where, you know, when other teams.
- 37:40Speaker 1: I know where you're getting at here, and we'll get
- 37:42Speaker 1: to this, but please go on.
- 37:43Speaker 17: Yeah, and like you said with Minnesota, it's a very
- 37:47Speaker 17: obvious answer to that question, right? When you want a goal,
- 37:51Speaker 17: when you need a goal, you know who you're leaning on.
- 37:54Speaker 17: And I get it. Seattle's built on depth, and they're
- 37:57Speaker 17: built on matchups.
- 37:59Speaker 3: So.
- 38:00Speaker 17: At the end of the day, Berkeley Catton's playing about
- 38:02Speaker 17: 15 minutes a night. You see the Beneers line and
- 38:06Speaker 17: the Stevenson line playing closer to 20 minutes a night.
- 38:09Speaker 17: I want to get to the point where it's time
- 38:12Speaker 17: to throw this guy, 27, into the deep end a
- 38:14Speaker 17: little bit because I think this breakout that we're seeing
- 38:17Speaker 17: from him is real. It's not just the goal that
- 38:20Speaker 17: he scores. creates the power play because he's the one
- 38:23Speaker 17: who gets tripped up by his skill. He gets five
- 38:26Speaker 17: shots on goal tonight. He's constantly a threat when he
- 38:30Speaker 17: enters the offensive zone, more so than any other player
- 38:34Speaker 17: on the Kraken. I want to see that more often
- 38:37Speaker 17: throughout the game. I don't think 15 minutes on the
- 38:40Speaker 17: ice every single game is enough for what has proven
- 38:44Speaker 17: to be your best offensive playmaker in Berkeley Catholic.
- 38:47Speaker 1: If we can distill that a little bit further here,
- 38:49Speaker 1: check out even strength ice time. Because out of all
- 38:52Speaker 1: the top four forwards on this team, line one through
- 38:55Speaker 1: line four, his even strength ice time was the smallest
- 38:59Speaker 1: at 11.57. He had Freddie Gaudreau also at 14.17. You
- 39:04Speaker 1: have Matty Beneers, 15-23, Chandler Stephenson also at 12-46. On
- 39:09Speaker 1: top of that, flip side as well, check this out
- 39:12Speaker 1: as far as zone starts here for Berkley Catton. And
- 39:15Speaker 1: this may be, I think, serve as a clue to
- 39:19Speaker 1: perhaps to open the door a little bit more for
- 39:21Speaker 1: him just based on the evidence from tonight. Offensive zone
- 39:25Speaker 1: shift starts, he had four. Defensive zone shift starts, that linebacker,
- 39:30Speaker 1: had two. It was zero last game. So maybe the
- 39:34Speaker 1: door is creeping open a little bit more, but I
- 39:37Speaker 1: kind of go back to what you're doing here with
- 39:41Speaker 1: lines one through line four. Lane Lambert has said, The
- 39:44Speaker 1: guys were playing well. They have their right seat on
- 39:47Speaker 1: the bus. However, he did open the door for more
- 39:50Speaker 1: ice time on that line if they are producing and
- 39:53Speaker 1: if they're also helping chip in with quality scoring chances
- 39:56Speaker 1: here once again. Tougher go tonight than versus, say, two
- 39:59Speaker 1: nights ago, but I mean, I think, again, the more
- 40:02Speaker 1: and more that you get good looks here from that line,
- 40:04Speaker 1: no matter who's playing with them, you almost have no choice.
- 40:07Speaker 17: Yeah, and once again, I want to emphasize that I
- 40:09Speaker 17: understand the thought process behind wanting to get the correct matchups, right?
- 40:13Speaker 17: You want to match up the Kaprizov, Boldy, Eriksenak line
- 40:18Speaker 17: with what you believe to be your best defensive line.
- 40:21Speaker 17: So you can kind of minimize that. Well, with that
- 40:25Speaker 17: thought process, that's who they're going to throw out on
- 40:28Speaker 17: as much the most throughout the night. So that means
- 40:31Speaker 17: you're limiting what you believe to be your best offensive
- 40:34Speaker 17: line at the same time. So while you're playing matchups,
- 40:37Speaker 17: you're playing your best players less often because of that.
- 40:42Speaker 17: So there's a trade-off with that. So that's just kind
- 40:44Speaker 17: of something that I'm curious to see what the adjustment
- 40:47Speaker 17: has made with Lane Lambert moving forward.
- 40:49Speaker 1: Let's go to the phones right now. Again, 206-286-9595. That's 206-286-9595.
- 40:56Speaker 1: Jeremy in Snoqualmie. You're on Talking Kraken. Jeremy, hello. Hello.
- 41:02Speaker 4: Hey, Mikey B.
- 41:03Speaker 18: long-time listener, first-time caller.
- 41:05Speaker 1: Great to hear from you. What you got?
- 41:08Speaker 18: You know, first thing I wanted to say was, you know,
- 41:11Speaker 18: great PK from the Kraken tonight. I really wasn't expecting
- 41:15Speaker 18: them to be able to stop a goal especially four
- 41:18Speaker 18: on three from the wild tonight. You know, watching them
- 41:22Speaker 18: last year, watching them be able to prevent a goal
- 41:28Speaker 18: on that was phenomenal. A step up from last year. However,
- 41:32Speaker 18: it really is a 5-1 or even a 4-1 loss
- 41:37Speaker 18: with the empty goal. This really reminds me of I
- 41:43Speaker 18: hate to say it, but a vibe check about the
- 41:46Speaker 18: Kraken on where they are on playoff chances. Similar to
- 41:50Speaker 18: where they are with the Knights or Oilers, it's kind
- 41:54Speaker 18: of hard to say that even if they do make
- 41:56Speaker 18: it to the playoffs, it's kind of hard to say
- 41:59Speaker 18: at this point if they'll make it to or past
- 42:03Speaker 18: the second round. You know, it's really great that they're
- 42:07Speaker 18: racking up points at this point, but it's hard to
- 42:11Speaker 18: get at my hopes that they're really going to make
- 42:14Speaker 18: any great success from this season.
- 42:16Speaker 2: What do you guys think?
- 42:17Speaker 1: Yeah, thank you very much, Jeremy, for the phone call.
- 42:19Speaker 1: Appreciate you again, folks. 206-286-9595. If you want to jump
- 42:24Speaker 1: in and join us here over the phones again, 206-286-9595.
- 42:28Speaker 1: I mean, Anders, it's early right now. I mean, you
- 42:31Speaker 1: don't declare a playoff spot as early as October 24th.
- 42:35Speaker 1: I still believe very much in the checkpoint of right
- 42:38Speaker 1: past U.S. Thanksgiving. of teams that separate themselves, the haves,
- 42:43Speaker 1: from the have-nots here as far as playoff contenders. And
- 42:45Speaker 1: I think to some degree, this could be maybe a
- 42:47Speaker 1: reality check as far as what you have to do
- 42:50Speaker 1: to level up your game because we have seen them
- 42:52Speaker 1: struggle against Vegas, the same thing against the Florida Panthers.
- 42:56Speaker 1: That was a big, big throwaway game as far as
- 42:58Speaker 1: what you want to take from it. But yet, even
- 43:00Speaker 1: tonight with Minnesota, you found yourself at a massive uphill
- 43:05Speaker 1: battle trying to match Minnesota. what their top line brought,
- 43:08Speaker 1: and they have plenty of offensive zone possession, not just them,
- 43:12Speaker 1: but also Quinn Hughes on that back end.
- 43:14Speaker 17: Yeah, I mean, the reality is you're facing a team
- 43:16Speaker 17: that has Stanley Cup aspirations, and when you have, you've
- 43:21Speaker 17: kind of really had very few teams kind of in
- 43:24Speaker 17: the middle that you faced earlier in this season. You've
- 43:26Speaker 17: either faced the really bottom of the barrels and the
- 43:29Speaker 17: Flames and the Philadelphia Flyers, or the really, really high
- 43:35Speaker 17: Stanley Cup favorite teams like the Panthers, the Wild, the Knights,
- 43:41Speaker 17: even the Lightning if you want to throw them into
- 43:43Speaker 17: that as well. I guess the one team you have
- 43:46Speaker 17: faced twice and you've split. Actually, no, you won both
- 43:50Speaker 17: games against the Red Wings. That's kind of the one
- 43:51Speaker 17: team where I'd be like, okay, this is a good
- 43:53Speaker 17: litmus test for where the Kraken are. And they showed
- 43:57Speaker 17: you that they can win those games against both the
- 44:00Speaker 17: bottom of the barrel teams and the the team's kind
- 44:02Speaker 17: of in the middle of the pack jockeying for playoff
- 44:04Speaker 17: positions there. So, yeah, it is early, but I agree
- 44:08Speaker 17: with you. I think this is more of a process
- 44:09Speaker 17: than anything else to see, all right, this is what
- 44:12Speaker 17: we need to do to get to that point, to
- 44:13Speaker 17: get back to playoffs.
- 44:14Speaker 1: See, also on top of that, I look back and,
- 44:17Speaker 1: you know, think of what they did against Calgary, 6-1
- 44:21Speaker 1: win as far as their first game, 6-1 in their
- 44:24Speaker 1: second game, and we're trying to separate, you know, what's
- 44:28Speaker 1: real versus what's maybe fiction as far as, where the
- 44:31Speaker 1: expectations are because you are facing Calgary. But you have
- 44:34Speaker 1: stacked up quality wins. I would argue Washington played them tough.
- 44:38Speaker 1: Good point. They had to grind through a win against Utah. Granted,
- 44:41Speaker 1: you had that blown lead third period, but you had
- 44:43Speaker 1: to also grind your way through Detroit. And we saw just,
- 44:46Speaker 1: I mean, as Lane Lambert said, he liked how they
- 44:49Speaker 1: played a five-on-five. You battled through circumstances, and that was
- 44:52Speaker 1: maybe a teaching tool for them. But overall, you take
- 44:55Speaker 1: first two periods. You like what you saw with Detroit
- 44:58Speaker 1: and also with Utah. So maybe you don't put them
- 45:01Speaker 1: in the upper echelon. You don't want to declare massive
- 45:04Speaker 1: victories here on October 24th. But as far as where
- 45:08Speaker 1: you set the bar, they've already, I think at least,
- 45:12Speaker 1: have gone a little further than maybe what I would
- 45:15Speaker 1: have felt or would have been comfortable in saying as
- 45:17Speaker 1: far as how far they are. say, two weeks ago. Yeah,
- 45:19Speaker 1: and I don't think you're alone in that.
- 45:21Speaker 17: I think most people didn't expect this much, even what
- 45:23Speaker 17: we've gotten from the Kraken at this point in the season.
- 45:26Speaker 17: So they just got to continue to build on that,
- 45:29Speaker 17: and I think tonight's one of those learning examples as to, okay,
- 45:32Speaker 17: this is what we need to do against these types
- 45:35Speaker 17: of teams. Minnesota can be both a heavy team but
- 45:38Speaker 17: also a fast and skillful team at the same time.
- 45:41Speaker 17: They can burn you on the power play, but they
- 45:42Speaker 17: can also play a clean five-on-five type of game. You
- 45:46Speaker 17: go perfect on the penalty kill tonight, right? But it's
- 45:48Speaker 17: 5-on-5 and the breakaways that kind of kill you. And
- 45:51Speaker 17: I think we should start having the conversation about the
- 45:53Speaker 17: goaltender because that's a whole other aspect to, I think,
- 45:57Speaker 17: what has been successful for the Kraken in when Philip
- 46:00Speaker 17: Grubauer is in net and maybe leaves a little bit
- 46:02Speaker 17: to be desired when 35 Joey Decord is in net.
- 46:05Speaker 1: You have ESP because you read my mind. That was
- 46:08Speaker 1: my very, very next thing I was going to hit
- 46:09Speaker 1: on here. Joey Decord tonight, four goals, 35 shots. I mean, granted,
- 46:14Speaker 1: as Al Kaneski said, not every goal is the goaltender's fault,
- 46:17Speaker 1: but first goal, that's a breakaway. Goalie is the last line.
- 46:20Speaker 1: Defense leaves him high and dry, but the goalie is
- 46:22Speaker 1: the last line. Second goal, another breakaway. Screen for the
- 46:26Speaker 1: third goal, it is a screen, but you have a
- 46:28Speaker 1: lot of room, glove side, where that puck gets on by,
- 46:31Speaker 1: and the fourth goal, you lose the wrong guy at
- 46:34Speaker 1: the net, so a breakdown costs Joey Decord on that one,
- 46:37Speaker 1: but despite the fact the Kraken don't have a lot
- 46:41Speaker 1: of games in bulk. From here until past U.S. Thanksgiving,
- 46:46Speaker 1: where are we with Joey Decord as far as your thoughts,
- 46:48Speaker 1: and where are we right now with the balance of
- 46:51Speaker 1: him and Philip Grubauer?
- 46:52Speaker 17: Yeah, I don't think it's to the point where it's
- 46:54Speaker 17: so bad where you can't play Joey Decord unless it's
- 46:58Speaker 17: a back-to-back night. I still think you have a relative
- 47:01Speaker 17: 50-50 split moving forward, but I wonder what Lane Lambert
- 47:05Speaker 17: feels about this because I don't know if he's going to,
- 47:10Speaker 17: you know, have a little sense of urgency in picking
- 47:12Speaker 17: up points as much as you possibly can. And obviously
- 47:18Speaker 17: right now, Philip Grubauer is playing better hockey. And that
- 47:22Speaker 17: probably will change at some point this year. It probably
- 47:25Speaker 17: won't be Philip Grubauer is the best of the two
- 47:27Speaker 17: of them for the entirety of this year.
- 47:29Speaker 7: So.
- 47:31Speaker 17: I think at some point you have to start riding
- 47:33Speaker 17: the hot hand, and then whenever that cools off, you
- 47:35Speaker 17: can start to switch back and forth again. Because I
- 47:38Speaker 17: do feel like there's a noticeable difference right now between
- 47:42Speaker 17: the play of Philip Grubauer and Joey Decord.
- 47:45Speaker 1: And I did not expect that coming into this year.
- 47:46Speaker 1: And we have seen Joey Decord, when he is at
- 47:49Speaker 1: his best, he is playing pucks. He is seeing through
- 47:51Speaker 1: lanes with confidence, and that's an element that he needs
- 47:54Speaker 1: to get right back into his game because, again, If
- 47:57Speaker 1: this ship has got to go in the right direction,
- 47:59Speaker 1: you've got to have both goaltenders in lockstep, and Phillip
- 48:02Speaker 1: Grubauer certainly is filling that void, and we'll see if
- 48:05Speaker 1: Joey Decord can bounce back the next time that he
- 48:08Speaker 1: is in net. Check right now the Tacoma-Dash text line, 49451,
- 48:12Speaker 1: and first off with a 425, just saying tough to
- 48:15Speaker 1: generate quality shots here for tonight. Hats off to the Wild.
- 48:18Speaker 1: Let's get the energy back here for the Leafs. And Jeff,
- 48:22Speaker 1: with that note here from the 4-2-5, for as good
- 48:25Speaker 1: as Minnesota is a puck possession, and this wasn't always
- 48:28Speaker 1: the bread and butter before Quinn Hughes, even Kirill Kaprizov,
- 48:32Speaker 1: they were very much a beach of 3-2, 2-1 type
- 48:35Speaker 1: of team, play the trap even at some points, use
- 48:38Speaker 1: goaltending to your advantage. But they are still very, very
- 48:42Speaker 1: good under John Hines with how they limit shots, how
- 48:46Speaker 1: they clear lanes for their own goaltenders, how they box
- 48:49Speaker 1: out as well, and that made life, I thought, certainly
- 48:52Speaker 1: hard on the Kraken here for tonight. For the 5-6-4,
- 48:55Speaker 1: saying the Kraken are starving for a star, not convinced
- 48:59Speaker 1: Berkeley Catton's going to fill that role, that from the 5-6-4.
- 49:03Speaker 1: Here's the point I'm making. He's just 20 years of age,
- 49:07Speaker 1: and the plays that he is making are really, I think,
- 49:11Speaker 1: unprecedented from what we have seen up and down this lineup,
- 49:15Speaker 1: where it requires, usually in the first five years from
- 49:18Speaker 1: what we've seen, a large degree of simplicity. Berkeley Catton,
- 49:22Speaker 1: number one, isn't just creating offense, I think, from his
- 49:26Speaker 1: ability to manufacture space. He's also doing this here with
- 49:30Speaker 1: breakouts from his own zone in tight quarters. I remember,
- 49:33Speaker 1: I think it was one play in the near corner,
- 49:36Speaker 1: and I want to say it was back in period two.
- 49:38Speaker 1: He had Ryan Hartman closing on him like a freight train.
- 49:42Speaker 1: All of a sudden, he pulls the old Sonic the
- 49:45Speaker 1: Hedgehog spin move right to his backhand and leaves him
- 49:48Speaker 1: right in the dust, and that puck is right out
- 49:51Speaker 1: of the zone in a hurry. That's an underrated play.
- 49:54Speaker 10: Oh, yeah.
- 49:55Speaker 1: That gets you more ice time. Furthermore, on top of that,
- 49:59Speaker 1: at 20 years of age, once again, we're going to
- 50:01Speaker 1: update this right now as far as projections, and maybe
- 50:04Speaker 1: they are early here, but nine points so far. In
- 50:08Speaker 1: 12 games, that computes out to a full season worth
- 50:12Speaker 1: of 63 points. At 20 years of age, I would
- 50:17Speaker 1: say that's a pretty good arc as far as finding
- 50:20Speaker 1: the right kind of star and one C that can
- 50:23Speaker 1: help be a big part of your core for years
- 50:26Speaker 1: to come. Yeah, I agree with that.
- 50:27Speaker 17: And 564, I don't necessarily disagree with your take that
- 50:31Speaker 17: not being convinced that Berkeley Cat will be that complete superstar,
- 50:35Speaker 17: but What I will say is, he is the best
- 50:38Speaker 17: chance they have right now. He is the best chance
- 50:40Speaker 17: to take that step. And right now, I still think
- 50:43Speaker 17: he is one of your two or three best offensive players.
- 50:47Speaker 17: And I want to see a willingness to put him
- 50:51Speaker 17: in situations where you can lean on him a little
- 50:54Speaker 17: bit more. Instead of, I don't want to say babying him,
- 50:56Speaker 17: but trying to worry about what matchups he's in or anything. No,
- 51:00Speaker 17: he is our best guy in this situation. Put him
- 51:03Speaker 17: out there no matter what situation it is, even if
- 51:05Speaker 17: it's in your defensive zone, even if it's against their
- 51:08Speaker 17: top line. You have last change as a home team.
- 51:11Speaker 17: use your best players like they are your best players.
- 51:15Speaker 17: And I want to see that more. Even though he
- 51:16Speaker 17: is 20 years old, I want to see that because
- 51:19Speaker 17: I see the things that you're talking about, Mike, and
- 51:21Speaker 17: I see the potential that he has.
- 51:23Speaker 1: 4-2-5 also saying Berkeley Cat and Shane Wright certainly have
- 51:26Speaker 1: chemistry on the attack, so it's not just about moving
- 51:28Speaker 1: Cat and Berkeley Cat and Shane Wright. That's a line
- 51:32Speaker 1: that you have to consider as far as moving players
- 51:34Speaker 1: up to the right certain spots. That from the 4-2-5.
- 51:38Speaker 1: Anders Knight taking a break. We'll come back in a
- 51:40Speaker 1: moment here with reaction. Right back across the street once again.
- 51:43Speaker 1: The Kraken fall tonight, 5-1 to Minnesota. Talking Kraken rules
- 51:47Speaker 1: on after this on 93.3 KJR FM.
