- 0:00Speaker 1: 806-1310-WIBA and Ask the Experts brought to you by Larson
- 0:05Speaker 1: Keeney Home Services Online. LarsonKeeneyHomeServices.com. Easy to remember. That's spelled Larson, L-A-R-S-O-N, Keeney, K-E-E-N-E-Y, HomeServices.com.
- 0:17Speaker 1: That's LarsonKeeneyHomeServices.com. Important thing this morning is that telephone number 608-535-4343.
- 0:22Speaker 2: That's 535-4343.
- 0:22Speaker 1: 43 43 still got time to get on the calendar,
- 0:29Speaker 1: get on schedule with Larson Keeney home service. As a
- 0:32Speaker 1: matter of fact, if you've been putting it off now
- 0:34Speaker 1: is the time to call them 608-535-4343. That's 535-4343. And Andrew,
- 0:38Speaker 1: we're going to talk about gutters, an aspect of the gutter, um,
- 0:45Speaker 1: installation process that I don't know that we've dug into
- 0:48Speaker 1: deeply in the past, which is what actually goes on
- 0:51Speaker 1: on installation day. I know we've talked about, uh, the
- 0:53Speaker 1: great work that your guys do when it comes to
- 0:57Speaker 1: helping homeowners understand the benefits of new gutters, installed the
- 1:01Speaker 1: gutter shutter and everything else from Larson Keeney Home Services.
- 1:03Speaker 1: But I don't think we've ever talked about what actually
- 1:06Speaker 1: goes on day of. Great to have you along. Let's
- 1:08Speaker 1: talk a little bit about that aspect of gutter installation, Andrew.
- 1:13Speaker 2: I don't think we ever have talked about actually what
- 1:15Speaker 2: happens on the day of install.
- 1:18Speaker 1: It's like Christmas morning.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Besides pure chaos. Just kidding. So obviously we sell gutter
- 1:27Speaker 2: shutter gutters and I talk very, very, very highly about them.
- 1:31Speaker 2: I'm not coming on here to be a pitch man,
- 1:33Speaker 2: but man, I've been in this industry since 2000. Started
- 1:39Speaker 2: off as an installer, sales rep, and then started my
- 1:42Speaker 2: own company. And here we are today. Yeah. 26 years later,
- 1:46Speaker 2: my head's been in the gutter the entire time. Literally.
- 1:49Speaker 2: But we, when it comes to gutter shutter, there is
- 1:56Speaker 2: nothing better on the market. And I don't, I don't
- 1:59Speaker 2: take that lightly. I have, we have statistics and data
- 2:05Speaker 2: proof because we see the services that come in. Everything
- 2:11Speaker 2: that we do has a lifetime impact. no clog guarantee,
- 2:15Speaker 2: lifetime workmanship guarantee. And the other product that we used
- 2:18Speaker 2: to sell did as well. And I can tell you this,
- 2:20Speaker 2: the other product that we used to sell, let's say
- 2:22Speaker 2: it's called Leaf Guard, and we did lots and lots
- 2:24Speaker 2: and lots of it. And it was a great product,
- 2:26Speaker 2: but we made it really, really, really great. Because when
- 2:29Speaker 2: you bought it from us, you were part of our
- 2:31Speaker 2: family and we took care of you. Even though there
- 2:34Speaker 2: were some things that weren't perfect, we just had to
- 2:38Speaker 2: service them correctly. We always had a lot of services.
- 2:42Speaker 2: I'm not going to lie. We had a lot of services,
- 2:44Speaker 2: but we took care of them and we got them
- 2:45Speaker 2: in a very timely manner because we made the promise
- 2:48Speaker 2: to people that once we put it on your home,
- 2:50Speaker 2: you're never going to have to get up on the
- 2:51Speaker 2: ladder again. We'll take care of it for you. Every
- 2:54Speaker 2: single day, we have a leadership daily huddle, we call it.
- 2:58Speaker 2: And it's all the leadership in the entire company. And
- 3:01Speaker 2: we go over just where we're at for the day,
- 3:03Speaker 2: what we're installing, you know, just to keep everybody on
- 3:07Speaker 2: the same page. And we had... A feat that I've
- 3:11Speaker 2: never seen in the history of our company. The other day,
- 3:13Speaker 2: we had zero gutter services in the entire state. Numb. Really?
- 3:20Speaker 2: That's awesome. That would not happen with any other product.
- 3:23Speaker 2: And I mean that wholeheartedly. It wouldn't happen. This product
- 3:26Speaker 2: cannot leak. It cannot overflow. It cannot clog. If it leaks,
- 3:32Speaker 2: which would be basically our only service, if it leaks,
- 3:35Speaker 2: because sealant's not meant to last forever. We will come
- 3:38Speaker 2: back and fix it. So what does it take for
- 3:39Speaker 2: that to happen on the day of install? It is
- 3:42Speaker 2: still an all seamless product. So we come out there
- 3:45Speaker 2: with our 20 foot truck with our, call it our
- 3:48Speaker 2: moving factory in it. We roll form all the gutters
- 3:51Speaker 2: on site to the measurements of your home. If it's
- 3:55Speaker 2: low enough, our guy that delivers it all, Jordan Howard,
- 3:59Speaker 2: who's been with, he was my first or second employee.
- 4:05Speaker 2: I'm getting so old that I can't remember. The reason
- 4:08Speaker 2: I say they were within a month of each other.
- 4:12Speaker 2: But he has been here since the conception of the company.
- 4:15Speaker 2: He is one of the most phenomenal human beings you
- 4:17Speaker 2: will ever meet. He's been lead installer. He's been production manager.
- 4:21Speaker 2: And now he takes care of basically the most important
- 4:24Speaker 2: thing we do. And that's the quality control of the
- 4:26Speaker 2: actual product. So he comes out and he runs that
- 4:29Speaker 2: all out to site. He's also going to drop off
- 4:31Speaker 2: all of the elbows, all of the downspouts, the cleats
- 4:34Speaker 2: to put the downspouts on, the screws to put the
- 4:37Speaker 2: gutters on, the brackets, the end caps, and the hoods.
- 4:40Speaker 2: All of the stuff that it takes to get that
- 4:41Speaker 2: job complete. He is going to come a day or
- 4:44Speaker 2: two before the install, re-inspect the job, which is crucial.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Because I was a salesperson and I'm sure there's lots
- 4:53Speaker 2: of salesperson people listening. Salespeople aren't the most detailed people
- 4:57Speaker 2: in the world all the time. Okay? Yes. Just now.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Our production people, on the other hand, have a very
- 5:03Speaker 2: detailed and organized mind. Salespeople seem to be a little
- 5:07Speaker 2: bit more ramy, let's call it. I know that because
- 5:10Speaker 2: I am one of them. So he's going to re-inspect
- 5:12Speaker 2: the job and make sure that all the measurements are correct,
- 5:15Speaker 2: all the downspout locations are correct. Really important. the downspout
- 5:20Speaker 2: extensions that extend away from your home are in the
- 5:23Speaker 2: correct direction and they are the correct length to get
- 5:26Speaker 2: them past the natural grade of your home. Okay. All
- 5:29Speaker 2: important stuff. And if something was forgot, you can take
- 5:31Speaker 2: those notes at that time, bring them back to the
- 5:34Speaker 2: shop for the guys before they come up the next day.
- 5:36Speaker 2: So the next day you're going to get a message
- 5:39Speaker 2: that they're on their way with an estimated time of arrival.
- 5:43Speaker 2: They're going to show up. The first thing they're going
- 5:44Speaker 2: to start by doing is contacting the homeowner. And if
- 5:47Speaker 2: they're home, having a little talk and walk around. So
- 5:50Speaker 2: they want to walk around even one more time to
- 5:53Speaker 2: make sure that everybody's on the same page. Most, 99%
- 5:57Speaker 2: of that is just to make sure that the downspouts
- 6:00Speaker 2: are in the correct location. There's only so many places
- 6:02Speaker 2: for the gutter to go, right? They got to go
- 6:04Speaker 2: up there. But the downspout locations are imperative for the
- 6:08Speaker 2: system to work properly. So they even want to go
- 6:10Speaker 2: around one more time, A-OK everything, because I would say
- 6:14Speaker 2: half the time stuff is changing before the install. Just happens.
- 6:19Speaker 2: So I want to make sure that that's all correct.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Once that's good to go, they are going to then
- 6:22Speaker 2: take off all of their ladders and planks and scaffolding
- 6:25Speaker 2: that they use and set up the house so that
- 6:28Speaker 2: they have a good work surface for the rest of
- 6:30Speaker 2: the day. They're going to then start by removing all
- 6:32Speaker 2: of the existing gutters. That the removing of the existing
- 6:36Speaker 2: gutters is important because now that's our opportunity to inspect
- 6:39Speaker 2: the fascia board. Make sure that it is sound and
- 6:43Speaker 2: it is solid. Even if the fascia board is wrapped
- 6:46Speaker 2: in aluminum, we know this because we do hundreds and
- 6:49Speaker 2: hundreds of roofs every year. If your roof wasn't working
- 6:53Speaker 2: properly and you had water getting underneath it and running
- 6:55Speaker 2: behind the fascia, that's bad. If we've had water running
- 6:59Speaker 2: behind the fascia for an extended period of time, we
- 7:02Speaker 2: have seen it where you look up and everything looks
- 7:04Speaker 2: beautiful and it's absolutely hollow behind the aluminum fascia. Your
- 7:09Speaker 2: fascia board is just completely rotted out, disintegrated, turned into dust.
- 7:13Speaker 2: If we find that now, obviously the job gets a
- 7:16Speaker 2: little bit more extensive and we're going to need to
- 7:18Speaker 2: replace all of that fascia and most likely make new
- 7:21Speaker 2: fascia wrap because it usually gets wrecked and taking it off.
- 7:24Speaker 2: That's rare. We're talking like 1%. But typically the fascia
- 7:30Speaker 2: is all sound. Now we're good to go. We're going
- 7:31Speaker 2: to find what level is because we don't want the
- 7:34Speaker 2: gutters to be level, right? We need them to be
- 7:36Speaker 2: out of level towards the downspout. When gutters get hung level,
- 7:39Speaker 2: that's when problems happen. That's when you get more ice buildup.
- 7:42Speaker 2: That's when you have more debris. So we're gonna make
- 7:45Speaker 2: sure now we're gonna put those gutters up and we're
- 7:47Speaker 2: gonna slope them towards the downspout. So it all runs
- 7:50Speaker 2: out and away from your home. While doing that, installing
- 7:54Speaker 2: our gutter stud bracket. I'm not making that up. That's
- 7:57Speaker 2: what it's called. Literally because you can't break it. You
- 8:01Speaker 2: can't break it. There is a guy who has a
- 8:04Speaker 2: gutter shutter that did an experiment where he lined up
- 8:06Speaker 2: like 10 brackets in a row, put them on their
- 8:08Speaker 2: back on the ground, and he drove his truck on
- 8:10Speaker 2: top of him. Oh, my goodness. It's very, very strong, right?
- 8:13Speaker 2: I mean, we don't need to do that. We had
- 8:15Speaker 2: a social media experiment. We were having a meeting one day,
- 8:19Speaker 2: and we hung a piece of gutter shutter up in
- 8:22Speaker 2: the shop, and we had three of our employees hang
- 8:25Speaker 2: from it, do a dead hang. We got a lot.
- 8:27Speaker 2: It was actually great. We got a lot of crap
- 8:29Speaker 2: for that. I think you saw it.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:30Speaker 2: I remember that. Yeah. We had a lot of people going,
- 8:32Speaker 2: that's fake. They're laying on their back. No gutter could
- 8:34Speaker 2: do that. Ah, not true. And they weighed over 600
- 8:38Speaker 2: pounds together because the installers were actually wearing their tool belts.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Oh my goodness. That was over 600 pounds hanging from
- 8:43Speaker 2: eight feet of gutter. It is the strongest. I'm telling
- 8:47Speaker 2: you ice and snow, like it don't matter. It doesn't matter.
- 8:50Speaker 2: It's not going to get hurt. So after we put
- 8:51Speaker 2: the gutters up, We're going to install the hood because
- 8:55Speaker 2: this is a two-piece system. Now, some people are like, oh, well,
- 8:58Speaker 2: it's one piece, all seamless system, better. Actually, no. Because
- 9:02Speaker 2: it's two pieces, it allows us to use your current
- 9:05Speaker 2: roofing system, i.e. your drip edge or your gutter apron,
- 9:09Speaker 2: to ensure that no water can get behind it. An
- 9:12Speaker 2: all one-piece system requires us to make a piece of flashing,
- 9:16Speaker 2: putting a foreign object underneath your roof so it can't
- 9:18Speaker 2: leak behind. Gutter shutter, we don't need that. So we
- 9:21Speaker 2: put the gutter up first behind the drip edge or
- 9:24Speaker 2: behind your gutter apron so nothing can get behind it.
- 9:27Speaker 2: We then install the hood. That's where the magic is.
- 9:30Speaker 2: That's how we guarantee nothing clogs. We don't guarantee nothing
- 9:36Speaker 2: can get in it because, you know, a leaf or
- 9:38Speaker 2: a whirlybird could kamikaze right through the gap and get
- 9:41Speaker 2: in there, right? But we know it's going to flush out.
- 9:44Speaker 2: What's that?
- 9:44Speaker 1: Yeah, those things will find it.
- 9:46Speaker 2: It'll find its way in there, right? It'll find its
- 9:49Speaker 2: way in there, but we know it won't clog it, A,
- 9:51Speaker 2: because we've sloped the gutter properly. We use a wide
- 9:53Speaker 2: mouth connector. The wide mouth connector, the hole that the
- 9:57Speaker 2: gutter transitions into the downspout is 6'5. four inches, four
- 10:01Speaker 2: by six. Typical downspouts are two by three. So we've
- 10:06Speaker 2: got a four by six opening. We know it's going
- 10:08Speaker 2: to handle the water. If something gets in there, it's
- 10:11Speaker 2: going to flush out and then transitions into a three
- 10:14Speaker 2: by four inch downspout, which are secured to your house
- 10:16Speaker 2: about every eight feet down. with two screws into your
- 10:20Speaker 2: siding and four screws on the side of the bounce ball.
- 10:22Speaker 2: We wanna make sure this is never gonna come off.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Once everything is complete, your home looks beautiful. And I
- 10:28Speaker 2: would say it looks beautiful. The backup gutter shutter is
- 10:30Speaker 2: about six inches. Typical fascia board is about six inches.
- 10:35Speaker 2: It is going to take up that fascia board. So
- 10:37Speaker 2: if you've got old, faded, dusty, dirty, nasty looking fascia,
- 10:43Speaker 2: this is gonna make your house look brand new. and clean.
- 10:46Speaker 2: It's going to make it look like you just got
- 10:47Speaker 2: a paint job. We hear it all the time. So
- 10:50Speaker 2: once it's all done, the house looks beautiful. The yard
- 10:52Speaker 2: is picked up. It's magneted. Any of the debris that
- 10:56Speaker 2: was inside the gutters is raked up and taken with
- 10:59Speaker 2: a garbage bag. Our goal is that your home looks
- 11:03Speaker 2: better than it did when we got there. Now I've
- 11:05Speaker 2: seen some homes that there's no way it could look
- 11:07Speaker 2: better because they're perfect. So we want to just try
- 11:09Speaker 2: to maintain that one, but we want it to look
- 11:11Speaker 2: better than it did when we got there as far
- 11:13Speaker 2: as the cleanup goes. After that, we're going to find Mr.
- 11:16Speaker 2: and Mrs. Homeowner again and do another walk around, get
- 11:20Speaker 2: the A-OK. And now that homeowner never has to worry
- 11:24Speaker 2: about their gutters again. And if they do have an issue,
- 11:28Speaker 2: you pick up the phone and you call us. But
- 11:30Speaker 2: there ain't a lot of people calling us right now
- 11:31Speaker 2: because we have zero services. Like this is something I
- 11:34Speaker 2: will hang my hat on because this has never happened
- 11:36Speaker 2: in the history of Larson Keeney Home Services. We're talking...
- 11:41Speaker 2: Tens of thousands of customers across the entire state, and
- 11:44Speaker 2: not one person has a leak, a clog, an overflow,
- 11:46Speaker 2: an issue of any sort.
- 11:48Speaker 1: It's amazing stuff. As we talked this morning with Andrew
- 11:51Speaker 1: Larson of Larson Home Services, looking at the trees, of course,
- 11:53Speaker 1: they are getting ready to make a mess of things.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Some of them are already starting to lose them. You
- 11:58Speaker 1: definitely want to make sure that you can enjoy your
- 12:01Speaker 1: football Saturdays and Sundays.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Enjoy.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Your time. Keep yourself safe as well. Give them a
- 12:05Speaker 1: call at Larson Keeney Home Services. Call them this morning.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Talk about gutter shutter. Have them come out. Take a
- 12:10Speaker 1: look at your home.
- 12:12Speaker 2: 608-535-4343.
- 12:13Speaker 1: That's 608-535-4343. Andrew, it's always great chatting, my friend. You
- 12:19Speaker 1: enjoy this great day. Keep up the good work and
- 12:20Speaker 1: we'll talk real soon.
- 12:22Speaker 2: See you next week. Yeah.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Kevin Ham, Ham's Arbor Care comes your way next right
- 12:25Speaker 1: here on 1310 WIBA.
