- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the Coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:28Hey everybody, good morning. And today we're back at the Jump
- 0:32rope. So here's what's funny about
- 0:35this because I have an Aristotle quote today and it's dark and
- 0:39the girls aren't even awake yet because it's really early and
- 0:43very chilly, but going to be warmer today.
- 0:46So I'm excited about that part. But anyway, this Aristotle quote
- 0:50just really captured something for me and I wanted to share it
- 0:53with all of you today. And it just kind of fits so well
- 0:55with what we were talking about with the jump rope.
- 0:58So this is the quote. We are what we repeatedly do.
- 1:02Excellence is therefore not an act, but a habit, meaning the
- 1:08ACT, meaning it's a singular thing or it's just that you're
- 1:12pretending to do it, however you read it.
- 1:13Because obviously this quote is very old now when we think about
- 1:18this and we try to go through the, the theory of creating
- 1:22excellence in our life, I can tell you this jump rope is
- 1:26definitely challenging me because I'm still at the point
- 1:29where I'm trying to figure out and really get through being
- 1:33able to do it without tripping. And the habit of it is not there
- 1:38yet. I mean, I'm, I would be lying to
- 1:40all of you if I said the habit of jumping the rope was with me,
- 1:43yet it's just not. It's, it's still something I'm
- 1:47working on. I have to think about it.
- 1:49I have to put it together in my head and say, OK, ready to do
- 1:52this. Like I realized a very
- 1:55interesting thing. I was jumping in my bare feet
- 1:58and it kept stinging my toes when I was tripping.
- 2:01So I was like, OK, I need to put on a pair of sneakers.
- 2:03Like these things are just not habit at this point.
- 2:06So when I was reading this, I read this quote the other
- 2:09yesterday in a book I was reading and I was like, wow,
- 2:12that is so true because I'm not in the habit.
- 2:15If I had the habit completely set up, I would have had
- 2:18sneakers on. I would have had everything set
- 2:20the way I needed it to. So the point is when we do
- 2:25something repeatedly, repeatedly, this is the point.
- 2:30It's got to be that habit when we want it to be where we are
- 2:35going in the right direction. So again, the quote is we are
- 2:40what we repeatedly do. Excellence is therefore not an
- 2:43act but a habit. So what habits do you have that
- 2:47are bringing you to the excellence that you're looking
- 2:50for? And you know, we often talked
- 2:52about what habits we all have that don't bring us to the
- 2:55excellence. So when I looked at the jump
- 2:57rope situation and I broke it down and I don't have a strong
- 3:01positive habit with it yet, I looked at where I was deficient.
- 3:05And one of the places I'm deficient is having the
- 3:08sneakers, having this set up in a way that I can win when I go
- 3:12to do it. So I've still not got my pattern
- 3:17around it nailed down, meaning if I'm going to go walk, I know
- 3:22exactly where I'm going to walk. That's why I've got a trail
- 3:24around the entire property. My husband and my son laugh at
- 3:28me because they're like, oh look, you've got a whole trail
- 3:31just right into the ground. You've walked so many steps
- 3:34around it. It looks like a dirt Rd. around
- 3:37the outside edge of the perimeter of the property
- 3:38because I am just consistently walking there so much.
- 3:42I'm causing that to happen. I don't have to think about
- 3:46where I'm walking. My friends, I walk out the door,
- 3:48I put the same sneakers on. I walk out the door.
- 3:51They are my outdoor sneakers and I just walk.
- 3:55Now here's what's funny about the whole sneaker thing.
- 3:57I don't have a hat. We don't wear shoes in our
- 3:59house. Our habit is never to bring
- 4:00shoes in the house. So I would never think to put
- 4:03sneakers on coming in the house. So of course, I would jump in my
- 4:07bare feet because I'm in my bare feet in my house.
- 4:11So do you see how these all these little things either add
- 4:15to the greatness of the excellence of it, or they take
- 4:17away from it? That's why habits are so
- 4:19important to define and dig into so you understand where they're
- 4:24coming from. My, my development of this is,
- 4:28has got to look at all that those little tiny pieces.
- 4:31So I'm going back through now and I'm saying, OK, I want to
- 4:36make sure this is set up. Just like when I was trying to
- 4:38get into the habit of walking originally, I would actually
- 4:42bring my sneakers, put a piece of paper towel, I know it sounds
- 4:46crazy on my night stand and I would put my sneakers with a
- 4:49note in them that said who do you choose to be?
- 4:52So in the morning when I looked at the sneakers and I didn't
- 4:55want to get up and walk, I saw that note with a sticking right
- 4:58out of the sneaker. Who would you choose?
- 4:59Who am I choosing to be or who do you choose to be?
- 5:03And immediately I would get up because I knew what that meant.
- 5:06I wanted to choose to be the Walker.
- 5:08I wanted to choose to be the person that was healthier.
- 5:11So I had to set it up that way. Same thing here.
- 5:15I have to do the exact same thing now.
- 5:18So I've got to go and break it all down.
- 5:20Meaning I've got to have the computer where I watch this app
- 5:24with my jumping friend and I can go ahead have it all set up
- 5:29right. I don't have to think about it.
- 5:31I've now got a pair of indoor sneakers lined up so that I can
- 5:35put them on. They've never been worn outside
- 5:38so I don't have to get freaked out about the germs in the house
- 5:40or chicken poop that might be picked up from something outside
- 5:44because we know we have chicken poop here anyway.
- 5:47It's just, it's part of that process.
- 5:49So look for that. Look for that little tiny trail,
- 5:54if you will, of OK, where are these habits either helping or
- 5:58hurting and recognizing I want the habits to help me.
- 6:01So I hope you guys have a blessed day and I'm going to
- 6:04jump some rope and I'll talk to you later.
- 6:06Bye.
