- 0:04And I got Paris with me today and today is July 10th.
- 0:08Peace through humility.
- 0:10The stone.
- 0:12Peace grows when I take responsibility for my part and release the rest.
- 0:17Ripple one practical.
- 0:18Today when something disturbs me, I will pause and look inward before reaching outward.
- 0:23I will ask where I may have been impatient, fearful, or self-centered.
- 0:28Owning my part brings clarity and keeps me from escalating the situation.
- 0:34Ripple 2 Spiritual
- 0:35The Father meets me in honesty.
- 0:37Jesus teaches me to live without defensiveness.
- 0:40The Holy Spirit reveals what is true in me and gives me the grace to release it.
- 0:47As I surrender my defects, even if the situation does not change, something in me does.
- 0:53That is where peace begins.
- 0:57And I was reading this and thinking about it, and I talk about this a little bit, man, because it says in the practical, I will pause and look inward.
- 1:08Well, yeah, I think about page 55 of the big book, and it says in there, it says, he was there.
- 1:17He was as much as a fact as we were.
- 1:20We found the great reality deep down within us.
- 1:24In the last analysis, it is only there that he may be found.
- 1:29It was so with us.
- 1:31So when I think about what I face inward, and that's where God is.
- 1:38And so God's inward, and I got all these things that are deep down within.
- 1:43On page 64, the big book that says,
- 1:45First we searched out the flaws in our makeup, which caused our failure.
- 1:51Being convinced that self manifested in various ways was what had defeated us, we considered it common manifestation.
- 1:59And what are the common manifestations?
- 2:01Well, I would think it would be self-centeredness, hundred forms of fear, self-delusion, self-seeking, and self-pity.
- 2:09I think those are the common manifestations.
- 2:11Maybe I'm wrong, but that's just where I'm sitting at today, and that's my truth for today.
- 2:14But so if I got all this stuff down within me and God's down within me and I face inward, well, maybe inwards the resentments I carry towards other people or the grudge list, right?
- 2:28Resentment is such a strong word.
- 2:31And, you know, I think, you know, when I look at it more than death, you know, it's just one of the worms.
- 2:36And it says grudge lists also, but on page 145, maybe the stuff that's within me is the greatest, what is it?
- 2:47What does it say, 145?
- 2:49It says the greatest enemies of us alcoholics are resentment, jealousy, envy, frustration, and fear.
- 2:57So maybe those things are the things, instead of using this big word like resentment,
- 3:02I can look at those words and maybe have a better understanding of what I'm really looking at.
- 3:07Because maybe I'm just envious.
- 3:08Maybe I have been envious of everybody for every different thing.
- 3:13And you maybe have heard me talk about this, but, you know, so I was adopted, right?
- 3:17And I use this thing in my head.
- 3:19And I talk about this a lot because it's an important representation of why I believe I was born with this illness.
- 3:26Because I was adopted and my birth parents were alcoholics.
- 3:31Well, I mean, you know, I just have records, but I know that my birth mother drank every day I was in it.
- 3:37And that's why I came out with some webtoes, Paris.
- 3:40Anyways, but, you know, so I grew up in this family that were nice people, loving people.
- 3:47And so even though I grew up in this nice and loving home, I mean, I still, when I drank, I drank.
- 3:54So that spiritual malady, I believe, you know, and you know, I could be wrong.
- 3:58Someone could point me in a different direction one day.
- 4:00But I was born into this.
- 4:04I was going to be an alcoholic regardless of what my upbringing and conditions were.
- 4:09My conditions were only for you.
- 4:11I used my conditions as a reason, and a reason I held on to for a long time.
- 4:16But, you know, so when I go into this grudge list and I put this stuff down, I put my fears
- 4:20down, that's me facing it inwardly, the sex things, right?
- 4:24And I thought the sex things were more on the sense of what I did, you know, and I was
- 4:29like, oh, I can do this sex thing good. I can do this inventory good. But man, it was really how
- 4:35I treated people of the opposite sex. And it wasn't good. And it wasn't, you know, it was very selfish
- 4:41and self-centeredness. But when I go inwardly and look at that, for some reason, it's like,
- 4:46it's just like this, reaching inward before reaching outward. And, you know, because I wanted my,
- 4:53you know, go back to page 52, right?
- 4:56And that was my perception.
- 4:58And so we had to ask ourselves why we shouldn't apply to our human problems
- 5:02the same way it is to change our point of view.
- 5:04So maybe it's been my point of view and not my human problems the whole time.
- 5:09What do you think, buddy?
- 5:10Man, you know, I'm looking at the start.
- 5:12I want to say peace grows when I take responsibility for my part and release the rest.
- 5:18See, the peace don't come until I start to grow.
- 5:23And what did growth look like to me?
- 5:26And I'm not talking about getting taller or getting bigger or getting big-headed,
- 5:29because I could do that easily.
- 5:31Were you taller?
- 5:32Yeah, I think I have got taller with my knees, you know what I mean?
- 5:35Like, I don't know.
- 5:36I think they put some itches in me when I did my surgery.
- 5:38But, you know, man, I started to look at it,
- 5:41and I was looking at page 84.
- 5:43It talks about we vigorously commenced this way of living.
- 5:47As we cleaned up the past, we have entered the world of the spirit.
- 5:52And this function is to grow as an understanding and effectiveness.
- 5:56So, you know, when I...
- 5:59Instead, when we vigorously commit this way to the past, you know,
- 6:02that's a part of cleaning up that it talks about.
- 6:05When I take responsibility, you were talking about the grudge list
- 6:09or putting all this down on paper.
- 6:11See, that's the responsibility part of me cleaning it up.
- 6:15Now I have to release it.
- 6:17And how do I release it?
- 6:18By talking with it.
- 6:20you know, asking God to release these character defects.
- 6:25And then it says on this practical part, you know,
- 6:29I will ask where I may be being impatient, fearful, self-centered.
- 6:33You know, I just read that on page 84,
- 6:36and it took me back to 77 where we was talking about.
- 6:40But this is not the end of itself.
- 6:42Our real purpose is to fit ourselves to be maximum service to God
- 6:47and the people about us.
- 6:48See, we talk about this selfish program a lot.
- 6:51You know, this is not a selfish program.
- 6:53It's also about, you know, about, I want to say it's about, you know, helping others, which is, which is this is, you know, because we help a lot of people.
- 7:04Look, we're on a podcast, we're doing this work, and a lot of people is probably listening.
- 7:09And, you know, so, but this is the part of the process.
- 7:14It's just a progress of growing, of growth.
- 7:18You know, even when it comes to owning my part brings clarity and it keeps me from escalating.
- 7:26You know, a situation, and that also goes to on page 85.
- 7:31See, I like this morning on awakening and when we retire at night.
- 7:36I like reading this in the morning times.
- 7:39I read this in the morning because, you know, if I get on the morning meditation zone,
- 7:45sometimes I'm not perfect.
- 7:46I miss a couple of them.
- 7:48But, you know what I'm saying?
- 7:49And I read this on another episode.
- 7:52I said, if we have clearly followed directions.
- 7:55See, I have to be that person that's to listen and continue to grow.
- 8:00Because I know myself, I can't do this alone.
- 8:03I have to have other people help me.
- 8:05I have you, Corey.
- 8:06I have Pastor Mike.
- 8:08You know, I have anybody that I can call out or reach to if I need some advice, need some direction, you know, also with God, you know, you know, and God worked through other people.
- 8:18When we go to these AAMs or rooms of recovery, as we say, you know, I believe like someone in there is, you know, will say something to you and you catch on to it.
- 8:31That's the God given within us.
- 8:33That's still fellowshipping under the roof of recovery.
- 8:37So when we do that, you know, that's why I like to listen to those things.
- 8:41And I like to go there to me because it says, you know, working with others.
- 8:48It was talks about the, I mean, not working with others, but a vision for you.
- 8:52You know, back on page, what page was that?
- 8:58Go to page 153.
- 9:00It said, the practical answer is that since these things have happened among us, they can happen with you.
- 9:06Should you wish them above all else and be willing?
- 9:09Let go that willing word again.
- 9:10I like that willing word, you know, because willing is the number one thing that we have to do in this program is be willing.
- 9:17I can't work with another person if they're not willing to want to work.
- 9:21If they're not willing to take these steps, what am I going to waste my time for to work with them?
- 9:26You know what I mean?
- 9:27And it's almost like, you know, I'm not trying to pressure nobody to get recovered.
- 9:33You know, see, this is part of the work right here is what we have to be willing to do this.
- 9:38I am a lot of people, you know, I want to talk about nobody else, but there's a lot of things and a lot of people that, oh, I just want to get through this program.
- 9:46I just don't want to feel no drug screens.
- 9:48But what are you going to do after this?
- 9:51What is your life going to look like after this?
- 9:53See, I have been in the shoes before where my life has been like, okay, oh, you know, something traumatic can happen.
- 10:02And it can lead you back to where you started from.
- 10:05And do I want to take those back steps?
- 10:06No, I want to continue to live this life for recovery.
- 10:10But yeah, that's all I got.
- 10:11What you got on there?
- 10:13Well, I was thinking about what you were talking about and, you know, listening to you, man, and thinking about, like, you know, what my life used to look like, what my life looks like today.
- 10:25Kind of been a part of your life in both senses, and, you know, it's really cool to watch this and to watch these things happen.
- 10:35You know, it says on page that same page you're on, on page 153 in the chapter,
- 10:40working with others, you gather an idea of how we approach the eight others to health.
- 10:46And how we approach them is this, man.
- 10:48It gives me exactly how to do this.
- 10:51And I sent you this picture the other night.
- 10:55And, you know, in this book, there's 89 musts and there's 91 nevers.
- 11:02So, you know, there's, you know, exact instructions, precise instructions, how to do this, that there's a bunch of musts and nevers.
- 11:10And, you know, in the spiritual, it says, the Holy Spirit reveals what is true in me and gives me the grace to release it.
- 11:21You know, what is true in me today is this, is that my life has been revolutionarily changed in a place that is indescribable.
- 11:35You know, the best way for me to describe it is probably through my story.
- 11:39And, you know, it's a good thing this is a short podcast because I can go on for a little while, man.
- 11:44You know, because what I used to be like was, man, you saw what I used to be like.
- 11:49There was nothing that wasn't just about me.
- 11:52And what I'm about today is, you know, little glimpses of hope and, you know,
- 11:57faith that my life isn't just about me, it's about others.
- 12:02But what also, like, kind of hit me in this was today when something disturbs me, I'll pause.
- 12:14So on, you know, I think it's important on page 84, you know, it kind of tells me what to do.
- 12:20And then it gives me some things, and I talk about this a lot, but it's, I find it important.
- 12:25Because on page 85, it says, every day is a day we must, must is a big word, carry the vision of God's will into all our activities.
- 12:33So maybe I need to ask God, what's his vision for my day?
- 12:37So on 86, there's an awakening.
- 12:40So that's when I start.
- 12:41There's a little bit when we retire, but I think on awakening is probably the most important thing of my day.
- 12:47We consider our plans for the day.
- 12:49And maybe those plans are what, you know, maybe was what I looked at when I retired.
- 12:54Was I resentful, selfish, dishonest, or afraid?
- 12:56And do I need to make an amends to somebody?
- 12:58Because that might be my plans.
- 13:00But then you go to 87, you talked about this not too long ago.
- 13:03As we go through the day, we pause when agitated or doubtful.
- 13:11and ask for the right thought or action.
- 13:13And so maybe the right thought or action is over here on page 84.
- 13:17And it says when these crop up, right?
- 13:21So it's telling me all through my day how to act, how to pray, how to be, and what to do exactly.
- 13:29There's nothing like that it leaves out.
- 13:31And that's the thing about it is when I call someone like my sponsor,
- 13:37man, like I've not gotten too much from my sponsor rather than,
- 13:42hey, why don't you go flip to this page?
- 13:44Why don't you go look at this?
- 13:46Because, you know, when I look at my old theory or gadget,
- 13:49which didn't work for something new, which does,
- 13:52you know, and that's on page 52 if you needed a reference, Paris.
- 13:56But, you know, when I look at the theory or gadget,
- 13:59which does work, and that's this book, and that's not subjective.
- 14:02What's subjective is how I've been in my whole life.
- 14:04What's objective is this book and these exact things and these musts and these nevers and
- 14:09these ways to be and a practical way to live.
- 14:12A practical guide or, you know, a design for living as you must.
- 14:16And that design of living has nothing to do with me.
- 14:18It has everything to do with how I help you.
- 14:20And this stuff of getting busy and thinking about me and that's, you know, where peace begins,
- 14:26man.
- 14:27I'll tell you, it was a crazy thing.
- 14:28I might have said this on here.
- 14:29I don't, man.
- 14:30But I went to the, I go to this treatment center every fourth Monday of the month.
- 14:37And my buddy that, you know, runs that treatment center, man,
- 14:40he actually double, he accidentally double scheduled me and another dude to go tall.
- 14:46So I drove all, I drove 30 minutes out of my way.
- 14:49I was all pissed off because this other dude showed up.
- 14:52So I'm leaving there.
- 14:54I'm like, man, I finally come to this one place.
- 14:57Like as I'm leaving, I'm like, maybe that dude needed to go talk instead of me.
- 15:02Because, you know, on page 15 of this big book, like you were talking about earlier, it tells me, it says,
- 15:08many times I've gone to my old hospital in despair.
- 15:11On talking to a man there, I'll be amazingly lifted up and set on my feet.
- 15:15It is a design for living that works in rough going and good going too.
- 15:19I think they left that part out.
- 15:23You know, when I was leaving, you know, after I got almost home, I got a phone call from a dude.
- 15:29And that dude was crying.
- 15:31And he said, Corey, I think I figured this out, man.
- 15:35And he was in joy, man, in tears because he had helped this old lady do something.
- 15:40And he had that little glimpse.
- 15:42But I'll tell you, man, that's crazy because that dude is locked up in a state hospital today.
- 15:46Probably never get enough.
- 15:48Yeah, man, you talked about, man, you know that.
- 15:50Hold on a second.
- 15:53these little glimpses of God, right?
- 15:56No.
- 15:57You know, these things that I can't see the pictures of that God can, though.
- 16:02Because nobody can explain a supreme being, right?
- 16:05Yeah.
- 16:06But that dude has touched people's lives that may be affected down the road,
- 16:10and that's all we're doing.
- 16:12And I was in a meditation one day.
- 16:13Uh-huh.
- 16:15And I had this meditation that, you know, this God,
- 16:18I mean, I have all these things that happen in meditations.
- 16:21but as I was walking along this long diving board
- 16:25and man like you know eventually I jumped off the diving board
- 16:29what's your jump in?
- 16:31it was like this million
- 16:34million mile thing of anyways but while I was falling
- 16:39I had this thing of all these different people
- 16:42that I have affected in my life and good and bad
- 16:45and it was interesting you know because you can relate that to the Bible
- 16:49when, you know, Jesus asked, what's his name to walk on the water, right? And that's all we're
- 16:54asking people to do is to abandon yourself to God and the people around me, not to surrender to some
- 17:00little problem, to do this work. And the work is just helping and getting out of me and helping you.
- 17:07And when I affect others in that way, it can completely aid them to help. Or I can take from
- 17:13too, right? I think I had that option
- 17:15today to hurt. But
- 17:17anyways, that's just what I was thinking.
- 17:19Yeah, when you're talking, when you reference
- 17:21it, when Jesus told him to walk on
- 17:23the water, the reason he sunk because
- 17:25he didn't trust. He didn't
- 17:28have that faith in him.
- 17:30You was talking about
- 17:31before I cut you off, and you ended up
- 17:33cutting me back off. We were talking
- 17:35about that on Step 10, when you
- 17:38were talking about retiring or
- 17:39waking up in the morning. I'm going to
- 17:41read something out of the
- 17:4312 on step 20 said the quick inventory is aimed at our daily ups and downs especially those where
- 17:50people or new events throw us off balance and tempt us to make mistakes you know man it's been
- 17:57a lot of times when i do this work today that i'll be like hey i don't see no progress you know but
- 18:04continually daily every day doing this work i get to do i get to sense a new presence of god within
- 18:12me, myself, you know, helping others, reading the book every night with someone else.
- 18:17You know, that's something that I had to get out of my own comfort zone to do that work.
- 18:22And, you know, in a vision for you, it says, uh, the cling to the thought that is on page
- 18:28124 in the big book.
- 18:30Cling to the thought that in God's hands, the dark past is our greatest possession you have,
- 18:35the key to life and happiness for others.
- 18:38That's in the chapter, the family afterwards, Paris.
- 18:42Yeah, that's fine.
- 18:42What do I say?
- 18:43Visual for you?
- 18:44Well, okay.
- 18:45Thank you for your question.
- 18:46With it, you can avert death and misery for them.
- 18:50You know, see, I'm not good at this work.
- 18:52You know what I mean?
- 18:53Once you say, you don't have to be the sharpest tool in the shed, but I'm in the shed.
- 18:59You know what I mean?
- 19:00So that's the point about it.
- 19:01You know, when you're doing this work and when you're working with another person or, you know, trying to get that.
- 19:10I want to say, you know, that peace in life.
- 19:14Because that's what the main topic is, the peace of the humility.
- 19:17You know, and to get that peace today, to be able to sit with myself and know that, man, my past have really brought me to where I'm at today.
- 19:26You know, because we can always be like, man, I done so much stuff, man.
- 19:31I did all this.
- 19:32How can I live today?
- 19:34But if you think about it, God put you there for a reason.
- 19:38He wanted you to learn.
- 19:40He wanted you to continue to grow.
- 19:42See, if you was a bad person, God would ask you out this earth.
- 19:46He had done it in the Bible.
- 19:47And look in the biblical.
- 19:49If you look at it, God will teach people a way that he knew in the future he would do some harm.
- 19:54So he'll take you away before you can do that harm.
- 19:57But now he puts you in a place where, okay, he's teaching you humility.
- 20:04He's teaching you how to be humble, respect your others, you know, and help someone.
- 20:08So we're good people to that.
- 20:10We might not have been good.
- 20:11We was good people being too.
- 20:12We was harming ourselves.
- 20:15I mean, we was harming people too.
- 20:17I ain't going to say what I mean, but not just, you know, not in a way of like, you know.
- 20:24It's difficult to say today because, I mean, everybody has a bottom.
- 20:29But everybody's bottoms are different.
- 20:31And when I look at it that way, like it says, a spiritual part is as I surrender my defense.
- 20:38You know, when I surrender myself, you know, allow God to come into my life, allow him to do the things that I couldn't do for myself.
- 20:47Man, you know, it's a sense of freedom and it's a sense of peace.
- 20:51You know, Philippians 4.4 says, rejoice in the Lord always.
- 20:57I will say it again.
- 20:59Rejoice.
- 21:01Let your gentleness be evident to all.
- 21:04It says, let your gentleness be evident to all.
- 21:07The Lord is near.
- 21:08Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, be in prayer and petition.
- 21:14And so when I'm in prayer, man, and I think, you know, that's the idea.
- 21:17Because if my life looks like I'm in prayer and petition all day, man, I'm in so much more
- 21:24place of being useful to God and the people around me.
- 21:29With thanksgiving, present your request to God and the peace of God, not the peace of
- 21:35me, but the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and
- 21:41your minds in Christ Jesus.
- 21:44And, you know, I think that's important, man, because, like, you know, today, you know, in
- 21:50one of my books, and I talk about this, but it's on page 87 in one of my books I have.
- 21:56It says, if God was your girlfriend, would God be jealous?
- 22:03And, uh, but think about that. Cause like, am I sitting, you know, and that's the most like, cause I, you know, man, I know you probably dated some women. I have too. And like how much time and effort am I putting in to that woman when there's usually just a couple reasons I'm wanting that woman. It's not just cause she's smart.
- 22:25No.
- 22:25Oh, and that's, you know, that's selfish.
- 22:28Very selfish.
- 22:28But how much time and effort I'm putting into that,
- 22:32when I put it into God, and I can say this in my household,
- 22:36that the only reason in my home,
- 22:39because it tells me on page 19 where I practice self,
- 22:41is my home occupations and affairs, right?
- 22:44But the central reason that that home is intact today
- 22:49is because God is the central fact of our house.
- 22:52And if it wasn't, man, there was a prayer and petition going on
- 22:58Thanksgiving being going on in that house for where our lives are today.
- 23:03Because you know where our life used to be.
- 23:06And it wasn't in Thanksgiving.
- 23:08It wasn't in prayer or petition.
- 23:09It was petitioning of bags and prayer and of more things of that nature, man.
- 23:14Yeah.
- 23:15And so, but like you had said, my greatest defect and my house's greatest defect has become our greatest asset.
- 23:23And that's through God.
- 23:25But what were you about to say?
- 23:27Now, I was looking at Psalms 51, you know, chapter 51, verse 10.
- 23:32It says, create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
- 23:38You know, there's just something that's, you know, when I relate or reference, I ain't going to say relate.
- 23:46When I referenced from the big book, I call the Numbers, to, you know, the Bible, there's a lot of references.
- 23:54You know, it's a lot.
- 23:56It's like, you know, peace doesn't begin when everyone else changes.
- 24:01You know, peace begins when I'm willing to do my own part.
- 24:04Right.
- 24:04You know, and when I notice that, you know, when I practice, or not when I practice, when I do these steps work, when I do these principles daily, you know, that peace of freedom, it also, it's almost like riding a motorcycle.
- 24:21You know what I mean?
- 24:22With me, you know, I love my motorcycles.
- 24:24You know, I not had an injury, and I still want to get on.
- 24:27Because unless you ride the motorcycle, you don't know that piece of freedom that you have in the body.
- 24:32But, you know, that's just another topic.
- 24:34But we're going to go ahead and end with the prayer.
- 24:36Hold on a second.
- 24:37But you know where peace begins, buddy?
- 24:40It begins with this, the prayer.
- 24:42Father God, help me see my part clearly today.
- 24:45Through your Holy Spirit, reveal what needs to change in me and give me the humility to release it.
- 24:51shape my heart to the example of Jesus,
- 24:54and lead me into peace and serenity.
- 24:57Amen.
- 24:57that.
