- 0:41Speaker 2: I'm not a fighter, yeah, he Jeff, is that dust up?
- 0:44Speaker 1: Is that dust up?
- 0:45Speaker 5: To talk to the combine? So far?
- 0:48Speaker 2: Not really? Uh, you know, just to I guess we
- 0:51Speaker 2: just call that Thursday.
- 0:53Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, of course.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Hey, Leggy, I just saw the amount of humanity surrounding
- 0:59Speaker 3: Travis Hunter. Is it like that for most of the
- 1:02Speaker 3: big stars. How many reporters are sitting there like cattle
- 1:06Speaker 3: waiting to be heard?
- 1:08Speaker 2: Well, I was one of them, so yeah, now all
- 1:12Speaker 2: the it's always been like that for the for the
- 1:15Speaker 2: main guys. I mean now in the modern version of
- 1:18Speaker 2: the combine and there were there were fifteen or so
- 1:22Speaker 2: years when not many people came. But it's a different
- 1:25Speaker 2: deal now, man, you know, and I you know, teams
- 1:28Speaker 2: actually like the CEO guys handle themselves in front of
- 1:31Speaker 2: all that.
- 1:33Speaker 3: What are the takeaways from what Travis Hunter said? He
- 1:35Speaker 3: said he is going to work out this.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Week, right, you know, he didn't like officially declaratively say that,
- 1:43Speaker 2: but that's the feeling. And he sort of hinted at
- 1:46Speaker 2: it that he would do at least some of the workouts.
- 1:51Speaker 2: You know, I don't I don't know definitively if he's
- 1:53Speaker 2: going to run a Fordy and all of that, but
- 1:55Speaker 2: I would guess at minimum he would do position drills
- 2:00Speaker 2: if they want him to. And he seemed to indicate
- 2:02Speaker 2: that teams have or he said, teams have interviewed him
- 2:08Speaker 2: as primarily a wide receiver, and then some teams have
- 2:11Speaker 2: interviewed him primarily as a defensive bank.
- 2:14Speaker 4: Well, his quote today was, they say, nobody's ever done
- 2:16Speaker 4: it the way I do it. I tell him, I'm
- 2:18Speaker 4: just different. He wants to play one hundred percent of
- 2:20Speaker 4: the snaps at both corner and why out. Just hypothetically speaking,
- 2:24Speaker 4: let's say he does that somehow, and he's really good
- 2:27Speaker 4: at both, and his first contract comes up, could he
- 2:30Speaker 4: command like sixty five million a year? Saying I do
- 2:32Speaker 4: both of these, pay me like both of them.
- 2:36Speaker 2: I find it very difficult to believe a human being
- 2:39Speaker 2: could play twenty three hundred snaps in the NFL four
- 2:44Speaker 2: consecutive seasons to get to the second contract. So I
- 2:48Speaker 2: think it will be a work in progress, and I
- 2:52Speaker 2: think a lot of it, a lot of his ability
- 2:55Speaker 2: to play two ways is going to depend on who
- 2:58Speaker 2: his coaches, how the meetings are structured, and just the
- 3:02Speaker 2: dynamics of doing it. Because I've said it's it's not
- 3:06Speaker 2: his ability to get in the way, it's the snap
- 3:08Speaker 2: count issue. Like for example, you know patser Tan missed
- 3:14Speaker 2: a game this year, so he played just under a
- 3:17Speaker 2: thousand snaps, But the previous two years, patzer Tan played
- 3:23Speaker 2: about eleven hundred snaps in those years, and that's just
- 3:27Speaker 2: on defense for him in an NFL season. And Travis
- 3:31Speaker 2: Hunter played what thirteen hundred and forty five snaps at
- 3:36Speaker 2: Colorado last year, so that leaves you only about two
- 3:41Speaker 2: hundred snaps on the other side of the ball to
- 3:43Speaker 2: get to his highest snap count you know, of his
- 3:47Speaker 2: college career. So I just don't know that it is
- 3:52Speaker 2: an amazing thing that we're even talking about it for
- 3:57Speaker 2: a player who could who could probably do it if
- 3:59Speaker 2: it physically possible. But I can't imagine a team would
- 4:04Speaker 2: invest in what you're gonna have to invest in to
- 4:07Speaker 2: get him in the draft and then allow him to
- 4:11Speaker 2: play that many snaps and shorten his career essentially.
- 4:16Speaker 5: Well, Jeff, I mean, it's just a human body can
- 4:18Speaker 5: only take so much. You can be built different, but
- 4:20Speaker 5: my goodness, gracious, I mean, fibers tear and that sort
- 4:23Speaker 5: of thing. And I guess it would be feasible for
- 4:25Speaker 5: him to play, you know, one position all the time
- 4:28Speaker 5: and then play a little bit at the other position, right,
- 4:31Speaker 5: I mean, could it be a dime package guy if
- 4:33Speaker 5: he's a wide out? I mean, I guess I would
- 4:36Speaker 5: try to think of a way to utize him as
- 4:38Speaker 5: much as possible, but not kill the guy.
- 4:41Speaker 2: I mean again, I know it's not the popular thing
- 4:44Speaker 2: to say, because we like, you know, folks like offense,
- 4:48Speaker 2: but most gms I know and most coaches I know
- 4:53Speaker 2: think the day to day dynamics of the NFL in
- 4:57Speaker 2: terms of meetings practice snaps in practice, which we don't
- 5:03Speaker 2: talk about in all of this two way play stuff,
- 5:05Speaker 2: is the number of snaps you would have to take
- 5:09Speaker 2: Monday through Saturday just to do it. But they say
- 5:14Speaker 2: the avenue for him to play the most both ways
- 5:19Speaker 2: would be to be a corner full time and to
- 5:21Speaker 2: be a spot player on offense.
- 5:25Speaker 3: They're never going to show their hand, nor should they,
- 5:28Speaker 3: the Broncos and the coaches that are out there. But
- 5:31Speaker 3: what will they pay most attention to this week? Where
- 5:34Speaker 3: do you think their eyes are going to be averted?
- 5:37Speaker 3: I see them looking at joker positions, but I don't
- 5:39Speaker 3: know who.
- 5:40Speaker 2: They are, right, you know. I think there's they are
- 5:45Speaker 2: looking for that position, you know. And in terms of
- 5:48Speaker 2: skill players, whenever Sean Payton talks about a matchup player,
- 5:54Speaker 2: he's talking about a player he can line up at
- 5:57Speaker 2: multiple places in the formation to cause a problem for
- 6:01Speaker 2: the defense. So those are the kinds of players you're
- 6:03Speaker 2: looking for, you know, versatile skill players who could line
- 6:10Speaker 2: up wide, lineup tight, you know, to the line of scrimmage,
- 6:13Speaker 2: maybe in the backfield, you know. So those are the
- 6:16Speaker 2: kinds of guys you're looking for, as opposed to, you know,
- 6:20Speaker 2: a really dynamic running back who doesn't touch the ball
- 6:24Speaker 2: very often, but that wouldn't be as much their priority.
- 6:28Speaker 2: You know that the SMU running back who was a
- 6:32Speaker 2: wide receiver for three years and a running back this
- 6:35Speaker 2: year he rushed for fifteen hundred yards. That's the kind
- 6:38Speaker 2: of guy you're really looking I think they're paying attention
- 6:41Speaker 2: to because that's sort of a down the board player
- 6:44Speaker 2: a little bit beyond the first round, and you know
- 6:48Speaker 2: tight ends who can be impactful receivers, that's what you're
- 6:53Speaker 2: looking for. Defensive, they're going to pay attention to the
- 6:56Speaker 2: defensive lineman because it's a great class and they need
- 7:00Speaker 2: one or two. I think I think those are the
- 7:03Speaker 2: kinds of things that really dialed in on.
- 7:05Speaker 4: How about I ask you about Gunner Helm, former Cherry
- 7:08Speaker 4: Creek kid who played for Texas tight end and has
- 7:11Speaker 4: a visit scheduled with the Broncos an interview schedule. What
- 7:14Speaker 4: do you think of him?
- 7:15Speaker 2: Yeah? You know, again, that's those are all that is
- 7:18Speaker 2: a position. They'll talk to all the tight ends here,
- 7:20Speaker 2: So I don't think you should take anything from an
- 7:23Speaker 2: interview scheduled. Uh, there's three levels of interviews here. There's
- 7:28Speaker 2: the the longer interviews that you schedule, UH, and then
- 7:34Speaker 2: there's the the shorter informal interviews UH you get in
- 7:40Speaker 2: in these sort of mixed zones the players have with
- 7:42Speaker 2: the with the coaches, and then there's UH the interviews
- 7:46Speaker 2: position coaches do UH at the stadium when when players
- 7:52Speaker 2: are moving between medical exams and all the rest of it.
- 7:55Speaker 2: And I just want every player talks to every team here.
- 8:00Speaker 2: That's just how it works, and too much is made
- 8:03Speaker 2: of did you talk to the Bengals? Did you talk
- 8:07Speaker 2: to the Broncos? Every team meets with every player here
- 8:10Speaker 2: in some fashion, face to face. One of the only
- 8:15Speaker 2: rare examples of that is the Broncos did not talk
- 8:18Speaker 2: to Jay Cutler the year they drafted him in the
- 8:20Speaker 2: first round, But that rarely happens.
- 8:23Speaker 4: Le you just to follow up on that. As far
- 8:25Speaker 4: as skill position talent, we were talking about this earlier,
- 8:27Speaker 4: Marvin Mims. It feels like to me an assumed players
- 8:31Speaker 4: going to make a jump next year. But when you
- 8:33Speaker 4: look at the sort of more raw data, he had
- 8:36Speaker 4: thirty nine catches on the year last year he played
- 8:38Speaker 4: in every game. Is it maybe jumping the gun a
- 8:41Speaker 4: little bit to just assume that he's going to be
- 8:43Speaker 4: a guy who emerges as a big time weapon within
- 8:46Speaker 4: the offense because they didn't do that until late in
- 8:47Speaker 4: the year.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know, my question is why didn't you
- 8:52Speaker 2: do that sooner? I think they've held him back rather
- 8:56Speaker 2: than something Mims isn't doing. That's my opinion. I think
- 9:01Speaker 2: they have been too slow to involve him. I think
- 9:06Speaker 2: he showed down the stretch. I think he's forced them
- 9:10Speaker 2: to think that the big jump is coming. You know,
- 9:13Speaker 2: they're acting like now you know or we saw it
- 9:16Speaker 2: come in and he really came on at the end
- 9:18Speaker 2: of the year. He came on because you gave him
- 9:20Speaker 2: the opportunity, uh to come on. So I think he
- 9:25Speaker 2: is an important part of the plan though. You know
- 9:27Speaker 2: that the main issue schematically for them is that Mims
- 9:32Speaker 2: and Troy Franklin primarily play the same position, the Z
- 9:37Speaker 2: the Z position in the in the offense, so that
- 9:40Speaker 2: means they're splitting snaps automatically.
- 9:43Speaker 5: Uh.
- 9:43Speaker 2: And that's the issue they got to have, you know,
- 9:47Speaker 2: at the you know that the old traditional numbering the X, Y,
- 9:51Speaker 2: and Z receivers in the three receiver set, they got
- 9:55Speaker 2: to have more impact that the other two places. You know,
- 9:58Speaker 2: I think they feel like Franklin and mm's can split
- 10:02Speaker 2: that one job pretty well. But you know, Sutton is
- 10:06Speaker 2: really the only X who gets a ton of action
- 10:10Speaker 2: and Veley was a reliable target. But they need more
- 10:14Speaker 2: impact than those other two spots too.
- 10:16Speaker 5: Jeff, last thing thirty seconds or less? Please, just because
- 10:21Speaker 5: I'm pushing the issue, Well, what's this scut about on
- 10:23Speaker 5: your door? Are what are guys saying down there?
- 10:27Speaker 2: Well, it's like all things most that you know, the
- 10:29Speaker 2: combine is a negative process for the players. They're looking
- 10:32Speaker 2: for your flaws and what you may not handle well.
- 10:37Speaker 2: And you know the issue is, you know, in basic
- 10:42Speaker 2: quarterback in coaching, people don't like that he retreats the
- 10:47Speaker 2: pocket out the top, as they say, or retreats backward
- 10:52Speaker 2: too often instead of climbing the pocket. He holds the
- 10:55Speaker 2: ball too long, in their opinion, and they're trying to
- 10:59Speaker 2: decide is that it decision or a habit. And that's
- 11:02Speaker 2: ultimately what he'll battle in his draft position. But a
- 11:08Speaker 2: really really elite thinker at the position that you know
- 11:12Speaker 2: plays his best in the in the toughest time, so
- 11:15Speaker 2: that's certainly in his favor. But the sacks are a
- 11:19Speaker 2: big deal. I mean, we've all heard how much Sean
- 11:23Speaker 2: Paige talks about it, but that's a big deal and
- 11:26Speaker 2: people are troubled by that.
- 11:28Speaker 4: Jeff Lakewell, the ESPN dot conjerst is every Thursday, and
- 11:31Speaker 4: this Thursday live from Indianapolis at the Combine Leg. You
- 11:34Speaker 4: always appreciate it.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Thank you, buddy, Thanks fellows.
- 11:37Speaker 4: Jeff Lakewell, the ESPN dot Comrade, you've got the International

- 11:43Speaker 4: Start with the job and with the career.
- 11:44Speaker 5: I'm happy for Jeff at the Combine because he is
- 11:47Speaker 5: a pig rolling in absolute slop.
