- 0:11Speaker 1: Happy Thursday, everybody!
- 0:15Speaker 2: Welcome to the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 0:22Speaker 3: Happy to have you with us. That is always the case.
- 0:39Speaker 4: Here on your home of the Utes, we march closer
- 0:41Speaker 4: to the weekend where the Battle of the Brothers will
- 0:44Speaker 4: take place at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Third straight home game. You
- 0:48Speaker 4: don't get those a lot. Three home games on the bounce.
- 0:52Speaker 4: This one, 1.30 kickoff. The weather forecast on Saturday, according
- 0:59Speaker 4: to my iPhone, tells me that you might need to
- 1:02Speaker 4: prepare for a shower or two, but it should be
- 1:06Speaker 4: pretty warm. 71 is reported as the high, so a
- 1:12Speaker 4: lovely fall day potentially with a little wet maybe in
- 1:16Speaker 4: the offings for us as Utah State comes to town.
- 1:21Speaker 4: A Utah State team that is 0-2, that had really
- 1:25Speaker 4: an unforgivable loss in week one to Idaho State, who
- 1:28Speaker 4: is a middling-level Big Sky team, but then bounced back.
- 1:34Speaker 4: with a valiant effort, although ultimately a losing effort, to
- 1:38Speaker 4: the University of Washington. And I will say this, Utah
- 1:42Speaker 4: State is coming in with some confidence to Rice-Eccles Stadium.
- 1:46Speaker 4: They feel like they figured some things out, they found something,
- 1:48Speaker 4: and that if they can protect the football, they'll give
- 1:51Speaker 4: Utah a run for their money. Obviously, that's how they
- 1:54Speaker 4: should feel. You don't get on the bus and drive
- 1:58Speaker 4: down from Logan thinking, oh, we have no chance here, right?
- 2:01Speaker 4: These are scholarship athletes. Some of them are paid, although
- 2:05Speaker 4: not nearly at the level that the Utah guys are compensated.
- 2:09Speaker 4: And the separation between the haves and the have-nots in
- 2:14Speaker 4: college football continues to grow. Utah State is one of
- 2:18Speaker 4: those teams that's trying to figure out its place in
- 2:23Speaker 4: When it comes to a new Pac-12 conference, reconstructed with,
- 2:27Speaker 4: you know, basically every member of the Pac-12 conference has
- 2:31Speaker 4: the word state in their name. The Utah State, Fresno State,
- 2:34Speaker 4: San Diego State, all of that stuff. You're looking at
- 2:39Speaker 4: a team that hopefully will remain relevant. And I mean
- 2:43Speaker 4: that genuinely, even though we don't have, like, any hardcore
- 2:46Speaker 4: connections yet. From a university or broadcasting standpoint, I really
- 2:52Speaker 4: do hope that Utah State remains a healthy and viable
- 2:57Speaker 4: program that provides more opportunities to in-state high school players,
- 3:02Speaker 4: where guys that maybe end up at BYU or Utah
- 3:05Speaker 4: and it doesn't work out there, they can kind of
- 3:07Speaker 4: bounce back and they can have successful careers at Utah
- 3:09Speaker 4: State the way we saw Bryson Barnes do so. You
- 3:13Speaker 4: want the program to remain relevant, at least on that level,
- 3:16Speaker 4: and hopefully more so. Hopefully, you know, every three, four
- 3:18Speaker 4: years under somebody, a very talented coach like Bronco Mendenhall,
- 3:21Speaker 4: maybe you can be an occasional flirtation-type team with college
- 3:28Speaker 4: football playoff, with conference championship, et cetera, et cetera. So
- 3:32Speaker 4: the Battle of the Brothers on Saturday, and we're still
- 3:35Speaker 4: trying to figure out how good this Utah football team is, obviously.
- 3:40Speaker 4: We will spend some time on that. Again, it's speculative.
- 3:43Speaker 4: It's comparative. It's what do we know? What don't we know?
- 3:47Speaker 4: Kind of talk kind of stuff. 877-353-0700. I already have
- 3:52Speaker 4: some poll questions up. One is, is this team better
- 3:56Speaker 4: than last year's team based on what you've seen so far?
- 4:00Speaker 4: The three options are better, not as good or same, same.
- 4:04Speaker 4: The other poll question has nothing to do with Utah.
- 4:06Speaker 4: It's about injury reporting in college football. and the gamesmanship
- 4:11Speaker 4: that is already going on with the LSU Ole Miss matchup.
- 4:14Speaker 4: Lane Kiffin put Sam Levitt, his starting quarterback, the former
- 4:17Speaker 4: ASU guy, former Michigan State, then ASU guy. Sam Levitt
- 4:22Speaker 4: is listed as doubtful on the initial injury report for
- 4:25Speaker 4: the Ole Miss game. This is a top 10 matchup
- 4:28Speaker 4: with two teams that, at least this year, there's a
- 4:31Speaker 4: lot of, it's a lot of BYU-Utah stuff going on, right?
- 4:35Speaker 4: Where one guy, a bunch of guys used to play
- 4:38Speaker 4: for the old team, head coach and a bunch of
- 4:40Speaker 4: assistants used to coach for the old team. There's this
- 4:43Speaker 4: like incestuous nature that I've always talked about with Utah
- 4:47Speaker 4: BYU that is permanent at our in-state schools. It's not
- 4:51Speaker 4: at LSU and Ole Miss, but this year it absolutely is.
- 4:54Speaker 4: And it's something that the entire nation is paying attention to.
- 4:57Speaker 4: And this injury report is a hot topic of conversation
- 5:02Speaker 4: because Sam Leavitt is obviously massively important to LSU success
- 5:05Speaker 4: as any starting quarterback is. Many reporters, including the best
- 5:11Speaker 4: ones in the business, Pete Dammel and company, are saying
- 5:13Speaker 4: that folks at both schools are basically acknowledging that this
- 5:18Speaker 4: might be some gamesmanship, that Ole Miss is not expecting
- 5:22Speaker 4: Sam Levitt to miss this game. I genuinely believed, I
- 5:29Speaker 4: say believed, I believed it was 100% Lane Kiffin trying
- 5:36Speaker 4: to mess with people. Lane Kiffin trying to tease people,
- 5:40Speaker 4: Lane Kiffin trying to get under somebody's skin. And then
- 5:43Speaker 4: somebody sent me a video of Sam Levitt post game that,
- 5:48Speaker 4: you know, he looked a little, he was moving gingerly
- 5:51Speaker 4: from their last outing. So maybe, maybe he's actually banged up.
- 5:55Speaker 4: The most likely scenario for me is he was in
- 5:58Speaker 4: treatment this week and missed some practice this week, which
- 6:02Speaker 4: justified Lane Kiffin playing this game. because he would get
- 6:08Speaker 4: in trouble if there was an investigation and he falsely
- 6:12Speaker 4: reported Sam Leavitt on this injury report. There's too much
- 6:17Speaker 4: money involved. There's too many gambling interests now that move
- 6:20Speaker 4: lines one way or the other. And that's maybe the reason,
- 6:23Speaker 4: maybe the number one reason why I'm not convinced about this,
- 6:26Speaker 4: because there was a small amount of betting line movements
- 6:29Speaker 4: when Sam Leavitt was placed as doubtful on the injury report.
- 6:34Speaker 4: And then it bounced all the way back to Initially
- 6:37Speaker 4: the LSU was a three point favorite. Now they're two
- 6:39Speaker 4: and a half point favorites everywhere that I can see.
- 6:41Speaker 4: So it went like LSU is a three point favorite. No,
- 6:44Speaker 4: Sam Levin might be doubtful. Now LSU is only a
- 6:47Speaker 4: one point favorite or it's a pick them. And then
- 6:48Speaker 4: it went back to no LSU is a small favorite.
- 6:52Speaker 4: And I think that's Vegas doing its due diligence and saying,
- 6:55Speaker 4: Oh yeah, he's going to play.
- 6:58Speaker 3: So do you believe the injury report?
- 7:00Speaker 4: And by the way, this is something that, That has
- 7:04Speaker 4: applied to Utah teams in the past. We haven't had
- 7:07Speaker 4: an official injury report for Utah yet this season. I
- 7:11Speaker 4: think I know how Morgan Scali is going to handle
- 7:13Speaker 4: injury reporting, but I'm not a hundred percent sure yet.
- 7:18Speaker 4: And I'll give you my prediction now. So Kyle Whittingham
- 7:23Speaker 4: wanted to share nothing. And even when it became mandatory
- 7:26Speaker 4: in conference games that you have to share, there was
- 7:30Speaker 4: a lot of vagueness to the way that Kyle Whittingham
- 7:33Speaker 4: reported injuries. Unless it was a definitive season-ending injury, there
- 7:37Speaker 4: wasn't a lot of questionable, there wasn't a lot of doubtful.
- 7:41Speaker 4: He listed guys as out if they were out for
- 7:44Speaker 4: season-ending injuries. That's how Kyle Whittingham did it. I think
- 7:49Speaker 4: Morgan Scali will be a little bit better to play
- 7:53Speaker 4: with for the Big 12 Conference. I don't think he's
- 7:56Speaker 4: going to be fully.
- 7:58Speaker 4: Let's tell them everything they need to know. But I
- 8:01Speaker 4: think that Morgan will be a little bit closer to
- 8:04Speaker 4: the norm in college football. I don't think Morgan Scali
- 8:08Speaker 4: is going to be like Lane Kiffin, where he's playing
- 8:11Speaker 4: with things and operating on technicalities. I think he's going
- 8:14Speaker 4: to play it pretty straight, but lean on the side
- 8:17Speaker 4: of nondisclosure, if that makes sense. So in response to
- 8:24Speaker 4: one of those polls.
- 8:24Speaker 3: Oh, wait, hold on.
- 8:25Speaker 4: I got to do good radio here. I got to
- 8:27Speaker 4: tell you what's coming on the show today. We've got
- 8:30Speaker 4: an NFL conversation at 1130 with Eric Woodyard, former jazz
- 8:38Speaker 4: writer and now covering the Detroit Lions. So we welcome
- 8:42Speaker 4: him back to the Utah Airwaves with a conversation about
- 8:45Speaker 4: Thursday night football. Lions at Bills on... prime at 6
- 8:51Speaker 4: PM tonight. So the, to be fair, the Thursday night
- 8:56Speaker 4: football games are getting better when it comes to like the,
- 9:00Speaker 4: the matchup, the headline matchup. This is a good one.
- 9:03Speaker 4: This is a like kind of outlier potential Superbowl preview.
- 9:06Speaker 4: If we're being honest, we'll have Eric Weddle who's joining
- 9:11Speaker 4: us from Italy. So I feel very privileged that he
- 9:15Speaker 4: will take some time out of his evening in Tuscany
- 9:19Speaker 4: or wherever he's at. covering or watching, supporting his daughter,
- 9:24Speaker 4: who is involved in some international acrobatics.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Competition over there.
- 9:28Speaker 4: And then we will have Dishin' with Dev at 1 o'clock.
- 9:33Speaker 4: So that's all coming up on the show. Now back
- 9:36Speaker 4: to the question at hand today. Is this year's team
- 9:39Speaker 4: better than last year's team? Much like I was asking
- 9:42Speaker 4: you to predict things in the preseason, I'm still asking
- 9:46Speaker 4: you to guess. Because we don't 100% know. Now we
- 9:51Speaker 4: have a little bit better idea of what this team
- 9:54Speaker 4: is going to be, what this team already is. We
- 9:58Speaker 4: have visual representation. We have seen a two-game sample size.
- 10:03Speaker 4: We have not seen them play against anybody good yet.
- 10:07Speaker 4: But that's often the case early in the college football season.
- 10:09Speaker 4: Most of the teams in the Big 12 right now
- 10:12Speaker 4: are untested. They haven't had elite competition to face yet.
- 10:16Speaker 4: It's actually, you know, Oklahoma state at a great game
- 10:19Speaker 4: against Oregon, BYU, Arizona week to test that to me,
- 10:25Speaker 4: that's a real game. That's a real, like figure it out,
- 10:28Speaker 4: slug it out. Big 12 contest. Arkansas is maybe the
- 10:33Speaker 4: worst team in the sec. And by the way, I
- 10:38Speaker 4: don't know if any of you have paid attention post
- 10:42Speaker 4: radio rant from one of their best fans. to what
- 10:46Speaker 4: Arkansas is now doing, they are like, they are running
- 10:50Speaker 4: campaigns to not attend Arkansas football games. Arkansas radio stations
- 11:00Speaker 4: are giving away other tickets, counter-programming effectively. There is a
- 11:08Speaker 4: blackout proposed in protest of Hunter Urachek's their athletic director
- 11:14Speaker 4: at Arkansas. There's a golf course in Fayetteville that during
- 11:18Speaker 4: game times for the Arkansas Razorbacks is offering discounts, free
- 11:24Speaker 4: cart so that you will golf instead of go to
- 11:28Speaker 4: the football game because they don't want, they know what they're,
- 11:31Speaker 4: they're trying to make it. So people don't support Arkansas
- 11:35Speaker 4: and end up, you know, causing some people to be fired.
- 11:40Speaker 4: It is kind of hilarious social media stunt in most cases,
- 11:43Speaker 4: but that's Utah broke Arkansas. Utah broke the Arkansas fan base.
- 11:50Speaker 4: They kind of knew most people knew heading into the
- 11:53Speaker 4: game that Utah is a respectable program, a respected program
- 11:57Speaker 4: that had some talent. the demolition they experienced at rice
- 12:01Speaker 4: Eccles stadium. I, this led to a lot of people
- 12:03Speaker 4: to have a violent knee jerk reaction and they want
- 12:07Speaker 4: silver field out already. They want nobody going to the games.
- 12:10Speaker 4: They want to not support. And there's like preemptive funerals
- 12:13Speaker 4: being staged because as we talked about on the show
- 12:17Speaker 4: last week, Arkansas goes from playing Utah on the road
- 12:22Speaker 4: at night to playing Georgia this week, pretty crazy stuff.
- 12:31Speaker 4: As I propose the question, is this team better than
- 12:34Speaker 4: last year's team? Are they as good as last year's team?
- 12:36Speaker 4: Are they not quite as good as last year's team?
- 12:39Speaker 4: And fully acknowledging and realizing that we don't quite know yet.
- 12:42Speaker 4: I was like, okay, so how do we figure it out?
- 12:44Speaker 4: How do we draw a comparison, a fair comparison, an
- 12:48Speaker 4: apt comparison? And the best thing to do is you
- 12:52Speaker 4: look at last year's team and what they did through
- 12:54Speaker 4: the first two games. Eerily enough. And I'm sure this
- 13:01Speaker 4: has been pointed out before. Last year when Utah played
- 13:06Speaker 4: in the preseason, in the non-conference, when they played a
- 13:10Speaker 4: Big Sky team, they scored more than 60 points. It
- 13:15Speaker 4: was 63-9 over Cal Poly last year. In that game,
- 13:20Speaker 4: Utah's offense generated 518 yards.
- 13:22Speaker 3: They gave up 223 yards.
- 13:22Speaker 4: In this year's game against the Idaho Vandals, Again, you're
- 13:31Speaker 4: going as close to apples to apples as you can,
- 13:34Speaker 4: because these are two teams from the FCS, from the
- 13:37Speaker 4: same conference. These are not the Montana States of the
- 13:41Speaker 4: Montana's of the world either. These are not like the
- 13:43Speaker 4: cream of the crop. When you're talking about FCS football,
- 13:47Speaker 4: the Idaho vandals came into rice echo stadium.
- 13:50Speaker 3: They ended up scoring 14 points.
- 13:52Speaker 4: Utah put up over 60 points, 66 in this case.
- 13:55Speaker 4: So last year it was 63. This year it was 66.
- 13:59Speaker 4: This time, Utah's offense put up 633 total yards, gave
- 14:05Speaker 4: up 225 to the Vandals.
- 14:07Speaker 3: So 518 for.
- 14:10Speaker 4: Your offense last year against Cal Poly, and you gave
- 14:13Speaker 4: up 223.
- 14:14Speaker 3: Idaho did score more points.
- 14:16Speaker 4: They scored five more points, and they gained two more
- 14:19Speaker 4: total yards than Cal Poly did last year. You gained
- 14:24Speaker 4: more than 100 extra points. And you scored three more.
- 14:27Speaker 4: So look, I think when you look at the two
- 14:30Speaker 4: performances next to one another, you're like, yeah, these are
- 14:35Speaker 4: equivalent performances. So last year's team and this year's team,
- 14:40Speaker 4: at least against FCS talent, look very similar. This year,
- 14:43Speaker 4: 33 first downs. Last year, it was only 24 first downs.
- 14:47Speaker 4: You gave up 13 first downs to the Idaho Vandals
- 14:49Speaker 4: last year against Cal Poly.
- 14:50Speaker 3: You gave up 12.
- 14:52Speaker 4: So your defense performed very slightly better against Cal Poly.
- 14:56Speaker 4: Your offense performed more than slightly better against Idaho this year.
- 15:03Speaker 4: But there's some equivalence here. There's some rough comparison to
- 15:07Speaker 4: be found. Interestingly enough, when you look at the distribution
- 15:11Speaker 4: of touches and of point scoring last year, In the
- 15:18Speaker 4: Cal Poly game, University of Utah didn't spread the ball
- 15:22Speaker 4: quite as much in the run game, but very similarly
- 15:26Speaker 4: to what we saw this year, this year it was
- 15:29Speaker 4: 10 guys who carried the ball. Last year, two, four, six, eight,
- 15:32Speaker 4: it was eight guys. Sorry, it was nine guys who
- 15:35Speaker 4: got to touch the ball, including Smith Snowden, a defensive player,
- 15:39Speaker 4: who got a couple opportunities here. So there was... Speaker
- 15:44Speaker 4: 0 7, you know who, who the leading rusher in
- 15:46Speaker 4: last year's game against Cal Poly was by the way,
- 15:50Speaker 4: it wasn't way. Sean, that's James Peterson behind the glass.
- 15:53Speaker 4: It wasn't way Sean. Cause way Sean, it wasn't bird.
- 15:55Speaker 2: It wasn't a minute to get going to be the
- 15:58Speaker 2: lead back.
- 15:58Speaker 4: I remember it wasn't Deb. It wasn't the Kerry Rogers.
- 16:01Speaker 4: It was Nate Johnson was the leading rusher against Cal
- 16:04Speaker 4: Poly last year.
- 16:06Speaker 3: That's right.
- 16:06Speaker 2: He actually got, I remember quite a bit of run
- 16:10Speaker 2: in that game in particular.
- 16:12Speaker 4: Carries in that game. He got 11 carries of that
- 16:15Speaker 4: game against Cal Poly. Nate Johnson got more carries in
- 16:18Speaker 4: a game early in the season than way Sean got
- 16:20Speaker 4: last week.
- 16:22Speaker 3: Isn't that wild? So again, totally.
- 16:24Speaker 4: Different coordinators, different competition, but there are, there are ways
- 16:29Speaker 4: you can compare. So in the FCS comparison, Utah scored
- 16:35Speaker 4: a little more this year. They also gave up just
- 16:37Speaker 4: a little more this year. Defense was a little tighter
- 16:41Speaker 4: against Cal Poly last year, but not in a way
- 16:44Speaker 4: that causes you any kind of concern. You didn't give
- 16:47Speaker 4: up too much against Idaho. You gave up one drive
- 16:50Speaker 4: that you'd like to have back against Idaho, I think,
- 16:52Speaker 4: is the consensus most of us felt after that week
- 16:55Speaker 4: one matchup. If I'm trying to figure out, if I'm
- 16:58Speaker 4: trying to prognosticate, as we go into week three, is
- 17:00Speaker 4: this year's team better? And then in week four and
- 17:03Speaker 4: in week five, is this year's team better than last year?
- 17:05Speaker 4: Are they equivalent to last year? You can only go,
- 17:07Speaker 4: I can only go on a couple of things. What
- 17:10Speaker 4: I've seen with my eyes out of this year's team,
- 17:13Speaker 4: what I remember from last year's team, what the coaches
- 17:15Speaker 4: are saying in both cases, and of course, what the
- 17:19Speaker 4: actual game results yield. Now, this one is really eerie
- 17:22Speaker 4: and really interesting. Last year, UCLA was not a good
- 17:27Speaker 4: team in the Big Ten.
- 17:29Speaker 6: Right?
- 17:29Speaker 4: This year, Arkansas is not going to be a good
- 17:31Speaker 4: team in the sec. I think Arkansas is probably going
- 17:34Speaker 4: to be worse in the sec than UCLA was last year.
- 17:39Speaker 4: But if we're looking for some rough equivalency between these
- 17:43Speaker 4: two opponents, I think.
- 17:44Speaker 3: From a talent perspective, at least.
- 17:47Speaker 4: Maybe they're kind of close. I think that the quarterback
- 17:51Speaker 4: play from UCLA, at least the expectation of quarterback play
- 17:54Speaker 4: from UCLA significantly higher than Niko Yamali Ava is more
- 17:58Speaker 4: highly thought of than KJ was, but when we break
- 18:05Speaker 4: it all down at the end of the day, like
- 18:07Speaker 4: UCLA was the 13th best team in the big 10 conference,
- 18:12Speaker 4: Arkansas might be the 16th best team in the sec conference.
- 18:15Speaker 4: But what we're talking about is division one teams that
- 18:20Speaker 4: aren't really good, right?
- 18:22Speaker 3: Have some talent. interspersed around the roster.
- 18:26Speaker 4: No real consistency in where the threats are. Do you
- 18:32Speaker 4: know what the final score between Utah and UCLA was
- 18:35Speaker 4: last year, James?
- 18:36Speaker 3: It was the same. Wasn't it? Wasn't 43, 10. It
- 18:38Speaker 3: was 43, 10. Yeah.
- 18:40Speaker 4: Utah, Arkansas, 43, 10, Utah, UCLA, 43, 10.
- 18:43Speaker 3: You can't.
- 18:44Speaker 4: I didn't even know that when I looked it up
- 18:46Speaker 4: this morning, I'm really bad at remembering exact scores from
- 18:49Speaker 4: exact years. It's just something that My brain absorbs and
- 18:54Speaker 4: dumps out of one ear or the other. James, you're
- 18:57Speaker 4: really good at remembering exact instances.
- 18:59Speaker 3: Numbers, dates.
- 19:01Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 19:01Speaker 4: You get a little Rayman going on when it comes
- 19:03Speaker 4: to that kind of stuff. I'm pretty good with sports
- 19:06Speaker 4: history in that way, yeah. So, 43-10 against the Razorbacks,
- 19:09Speaker 4: 43-10 against the Bruins. Now, this is where you start to.
- 19:16Speaker 4: To infer some things based on comparison. At least I,
- 19:19Speaker 4: I am willing to start inferring something based on, based
- 19:22Speaker 4: on comparison. And even if all you're inferring here is
- 19:24Speaker 4: that like, all right, that needs to be cleaned up.
- 19:27Speaker 4: It's still something to discuss. It's still something to talk
- 19:30Speaker 4: about last year against UCLA, the university of Utah gave
- 19:36Speaker 4: up 10 points, right? They gave up 220 yards of
- 19:39Speaker 4: offense and UCLA got 14 first downs. They rushed for
- 19:45Speaker 4: 84 yards. It was 4.4 yards per play for UCLA.
- 19:50Speaker 4: last year against the university of Utah. Now, Arkansas ran
- 19:54Speaker 4: more plays. They only had four yards per play. They
- 19:59Speaker 4: got more first downs. I don't know if you've taken
- 20:02Speaker 4: a deep dive into the stat sheet. Utah had 24
- 20:04Speaker 4: first downs against Arkansas, Arkansas, somehow inexplicably they had 21
- 20:09Speaker 4: first downs in a 10 point game. And seven of
- 20:13Speaker 4: those 10 points were gifted to you on a missed
- 20:16Speaker 4: interception that bounced off your defender's chest.
- 20:19Speaker 2: And by the way, what's not going to be talked
- 20:22Speaker 2: about as much because it wasn't as obviously close to
- 20:26Speaker 2: being a turnover is but they also converted what they
- 20:29Speaker 2: convert to fourth downs on that drive to two or four.
- 20:33Speaker 3: On fourth down.
- 20:34Speaker 4: They were seven of 17 on third down in the game.
- 20:37Speaker 4: When you look at UCLA last year, a lot more
- 20:39Speaker 4: dominance defensively for the university of Utah, UCLA was only
- 20:45Speaker 4: two of 11 on third downs in that game. However,
- 20:47Speaker 4: they were three of four on fourth down as well.
- 20:51Speaker 4: So from a yards per play perspective, UCLA slightly better
- 20:57Speaker 4: in yards per play, they were bad in converting third down.
- 21:02Speaker 4: They were a little bit better in converting fourth down.
- 21:05Speaker 4: They also gave up four sacks, four sacks against UCLA,
- 21:08Speaker 4: four sacks against Arkansas. What this sample size is telling me,
- 21:14Speaker 4: what the numbers from this sample size are telling, what
- 21:16Speaker 4: my eyes from the sample size are telling me is
- 21:19Speaker 4: that Utah is, I think, very similar from... the offense
- 21:24Speaker 4: is not similar. Like the play calling is not similar.
- 21:27Speaker 4: The play book is not that similar. Some of the
- 21:29Speaker 4: principles in the playbook, some of the philosophies of aggression,
- 21:33Speaker 4: I think are going to be similar as the season
- 21:34Speaker 4: plays out, but Jason Beck's offense and Kevin McGiven's offense
- 21:38Speaker 4: are not the same offense. Any similarities there are in
- 21:42Speaker 4: my opinion, coincidental because I actually think that Kevin McGiven
- 21:46Speaker 4: is a little bit more of a mad scientist in
- 21:49Speaker 4: the passing game. I think that Beck is, fancies himself
- 21:53Speaker 4: more of a run game coordinator than anything, right? You
- 21:58Speaker 4: heard the quote from Morgan Scali, and shout out to
- 22:01Speaker 4: whoever put it together on Twitter, that the quote kind
- 22:03Speaker 4: of comes, the philosophy, the idea comes from something that
- 22:08Speaker 4: his old Highland High rugby coach Larry Gelwix used to say,
- 22:11Speaker 4: it doesn't matter how we score or who scores, it
- 22:15Speaker 4: matters that we score, right? That's the Kevin McGiven way.
- 22:20Speaker 4: That's really every college football coach's way, but that's how
- 22:22Speaker 4: this is going to manifest in the offense this year
- 22:24Speaker 4: because of the distribution of talent you have across the board,
- 22:28Speaker 4: because of the leadership being shown by Devin Dampier and
- 22:31Speaker 4: by extension bird Ficklin who are willing to share those reps.
- 22:35Speaker 4: The way that way, Sean is just like, I don't
- 22:37Speaker 4: care how you get me the ball, throw it to me,
- 22:39Speaker 4: pitch it to me, toss it to me, snap it
- 22:41Speaker 4: direct to me, hand it off to me. Let me
- 22:44Speaker 4: get my hopefully more than 15 touches a game. Hopefully
- 22:47Speaker 4: it ends up being like 24, 25 touches a game.
- 22:50Speaker 4: And let me score for you. That's all I care about.
- 22:53Speaker 4: All of these things are great for Utah. I think offensively,
- 22:56Speaker 4: their potency is very similar. I think defensively, weirdly enough,
- 23:03Speaker 4: the tackling this year from what we have seen is better.
- 23:06Speaker 4: The playmaking is slightly worse. And if you're driving around going,
- 23:11Speaker 4: tackling is playmaking.
- 23:12Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 23:14Speaker 4: The dynamic playmaking, the turnovers, the stuff that we talked
- 23:19Speaker 4: about yesterday, the, and honestly, like a third down stop
- 23:25Speaker 4: is somewhere in between for me, because not all downs
- 23:29Speaker 4: are created equal. in football. That's why you have a jump.
- 23:33Speaker 4: That's why you have a bell that rings. That's why
- 23:35Speaker 4: you have a stadium stand up and the lights flicker
- 23:38Speaker 4: and go weird when it's third down, because everybody knows
- 23:41Speaker 4: that third down is where your bread is buttered, where
- 23:43Speaker 4: your money is made. It's where, if you're a defensive coordinator,
- 23:46Speaker 4: if you're Colton Swan, if you don't know what to
- 23:48Speaker 4: call on first down, we're probably okay. We probably won't
- 23:52Speaker 4: notice much. If you, if you start getting flustered on
- 23:56Speaker 4: third down, And we see guys running around and pointing
- 24:00Speaker 4: this way and jabbering that way, and they don't know.
- 24:03Speaker 4: Third down is where everybody makes their money, right? So,
- 24:07Speaker 4: based on what you saw only through two games last
- 24:09Speaker 4: year against, I will call them at least rough equivalents
- 24:12Speaker 4: from a competition standpoint, I think your offense is slightly
- 24:15Speaker 4: better than it was last year, which is really saying something.
- 24:19Speaker 4: Through two games, your offense is slightly more potent, maybe,
- 24:23Speaker 4: or I'll call them equally potent.
- 24:25Speaker 3: Your defense....
- 24:27Speaker 4: Has some playmaking to figure out, in my opinion.
- 24:31Speaker 2: Yeah, you've had a couple of interceptions, but not long
- 24:35Speaker 2: returns on the interceptions, and you've had a lot more
- 24:39Speaker 2: dropped interceptions than you've had actual interceptions. That's just one
- 24:44Speaker 2: example of how the playmaking that you're talking about is
- 24:47Speaker 2: probably lacking from Utah's defense through two games.
- 24:54Speaker 4: So 877-353-0700 at real OC sports and look better or worse. They're,
- 25:05Speaker 4: they're blanket statements. They're, they're too decisive. I'm not really,
- 25:09Speaker 4: I'm not really married to either of those. What I
- 25:15Speaker 4: mean is when you're comparing, when you're watching, when you're contrasting,
- 25:18Speaker 4: do you have a sense? I think we're getting a
- 25:20Speaker 4: sense at least through a couple of weeks.
- 25:28Speaker 3: We're excited.
- 25:29Speaker 4: James is going to have to fire up a couple
- 25:30Speaker 4: of microphones here. Our Culligan guys are, you've heard the ads.
- 25:34Speaker 4: I'm actually a little peanut butter and jelly. Devin Dampier
- 25:37Speaker 4: is now an endorser for Culligan water of Salt Lake city.
- 25:40Speaker 4: His ads, he sounds cooler on his ads than we
- 25:43Speaker 4: ever sound on our ads. Colson from Culligan. Did you
- 25:49Speaker 4: guys like when you, when you decided you were going
- 25:52Speaker 4: to have Devin read ads for you again, you're like,
- 25:55Speaker 4: hire a better writer, give a, give the goods copy
- 25:58Speaker 4: to Devin Dampier because we want him to look cool.
- 26:01Speaker 8: You know, Chad GPT is a heck of a, you know, writer.
- 26:04Speaker 8: If anybody didn't know, uh, I think that's the key
- 26:07Speaker 8: to this.
- 26:08Speaker 4: All right. So, uh, We haven't had you on in
- 26:11Speaker 4: a little while.
- 26:12Speaker 3: No, and I see that your water jug is empty
- 26:14Speaker 3: back there. We do need a refill on our own.
- 26:16Speaker 3: We need a refill of your water jug. What's going on?
- 26:18Speaker 4: On our Culligan water cooler here in the Broadway studio.
- 26:21Speaker 3: But that's fine.
- 26:22Speaker 4: So water is one of those things, right, where a
- 26:26Speaker 4: lot of us just kind of don't pay attention to.
- 26:29Speaker 4: Water is like an offensive lineman. You don't pay attention
- 26:33Speaker 4: to water. This is good stuff. You don't, you don't
- 26:36Speaker 4: pay attention to water until you have a problem with
- 26:38Speaker 4: your water until you notice that you got hard water.
- 26:41Speaker 4: That's messing with your appliances or you've got an issue where,
- 26:44Speaker 4: you know, your wife doesn't like the way her hair's
- 26:46Speaker 4: turning out. Water is one of those tastes funny when
- 26:48Speaker 4: it comes out of the tap. That's when you notice water.
- 26:51Speaker 4: And that's when you, you know, like, Oh wait, we
- 26:53Speaker 4: might have something we need to address here. And Culligan,
- 26:56Speaker 4: I think is the solution we're looking for.
- 26:57Speaker 9: Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 26:59Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 26:59Speaker 8: Like, have you ever noticed spotty dishes or have you
- 27:01Speaker 8: ever noticed scale kind of around your fixtures and your faucets,
- 27:05Speaker 8: your shower heads? Like you said, if you don't like
- 27:07Speaker 8: the feel or the taste, you know, Culligan system can
- 27:10Speaker 8: treat all of that and we'll do it before it
- 27:12Speaker 8: enters the home. So you don't have to waste your
- 27:14Speaker 8: time cleaning those spots off or using harsh chemicals or
- 27:18Speaker 8: doing any of this additional work. We treat it at
- 27:21Speaker 8: the source. And to your point, Water is unique across
- 27:24Speaker 8: the valley, right? So water in Bountiful is different than
- 27:27Speaker 8: the water in Salt Lake, which is different than in
- 27:28Speaker 8: the water in Harriman. And we have customized solutions for
- 27:32Speaker 8: each of those different water problems.
- 27:35Speaker 4: There's also a subscription model here, right? And some people
- 27:38Speaker 4: hear that and they're just like, ah, what does that mean?
- 27:40Speaker 3: I don't know. It can be a little bit scary.
- 27:43Speaker 4: So describe for me and for the listeners, the subscription
- 27:46Speaker 4: model of Culligan Water helping you out in your home.
- 27:48Speaker 9: Yeah, absolutely.
- 27:49Speaker 11: For as little as a dollar a day, you can
- 27:52Speaker 11: take advantage of being a partner with Coligan Water. We
- 27:56Speaker 11: become a partner in your home to treat your water.
- 28:00Speaker 11: One of the big challenges that we're seeing with a
- 28:02Speaker 11: lot of our customer base is they are so scared
- 28:08Speaker 11: and tired of high labor rates, you know, equipment.
- 28:14Speaker 7: When somebody.
- 28:15Speaker 11: gets called out to a home like an HVAC or
- 28:18Speaker 11: plumbing company. They're like, all they want to do is send,
- 28:21Speaker 11: sell me this $ 10, 000 system without actually walking through, like
- 28:25Speaker 11: helping me find a solution to this problem. So this
- 28:28Speaker 11: really creates a partnership between us and the homeowner where
- 28:33Speaker 11: we treat all of your water. We come in, we'll
- 28:35Speaker 11: service it. We cover the filter charges. We, we cover
- 28:39Speaker 11: the salt delivery. Labor is free. Install is free. And we,
- 28:45Speaker 11: It allows for us to constantly come back into your
- 28:48Speaker 11: home and make sure that we're adjusting the equipment to
- 28:51Speaker 11: the needs as the water changes.
- 28:53Speaker 4: I feel like you're speaking directly to me right now.
- 28:55Speaker 4: Because when you are a homeowner, you've got like, all right, man,
- 28:59Speaker 4: I got the lawn I got to worry about. I
- 29:01Speaker 4: got a water softener. I got a furnace. I got
- 29:03Speaker 4: all these different things. For the most part, if you
- 29:07Speaker 4: have a problem, you want it to be fixed, and
- 29:09Speaker 4: you don't want to have to think about it again.
- 29:10Speaker 4: But a water filtration system might need what you're talking about.
- 29:14Speaker 4: It might need calibration. It needs refills on the salt.
- 29:16Speaker 4: It might need you to change your filters. And so
- 29:19Speaker 4: I think a lot of people are maybe hesitant to
- 29:21Speaker 4: make this change because they don't want to give themselves
- 29:23Speaker 4: another chore.
- 29:23Speaker 3: They don't want to give themselves another job.
- 29:26Speaker 4: This subscription model takes all of.
- 29:27Speaker 3: That out of it. Yeah, with no capital expense.
- 29:29Speaker 8: Like Kent said, it's crazy how expensive labor and parts
- 29:33Speaker 8: have become for I don't understand what reason. but we're
- 29:36Speaker 8: trying to make it easy for all Utahns to get
- 29:40Speaker 8: better water for as little as a dollar a day.
- 29:42Speaker 8: That's 30 bucks a month. We'll come out, we'll service it.
- 29:45Speaker 8: We'll do all the labor. We'll do all the filter
- 29:47Speaker 8: changes for free. There's no additional expense. There's no hidden costs.
- 29:51Speaker 8: And that's good for as long as you participate in
- 29:54Speaker 8: the subscription model. And so you're able to get really
- 29:58Speaker 8: high quality water and equipment for.
- 30:03Speaker 3: Literally a dollar a day.
- 30:04Speaker 4: It really, it really feels like kind of a no
- 30:06Speaker 4: brainer here. If you're, if you're someone who you don't
- 30:09Speaker 4: know if you need this change, if you really want
- 30:11Speaker 4: this change, the subscription model without the big upfront costs
- 30:15Speaker 4: makes a ton of sense.
- 30:16Speaker 9: Yeah, absolutely.
- 30:17Speaker 8: And we'll actually even apply if you decide that you
- 30:19Speaker 8: want to purchase this equipment from us, because as the
- 30:21Speaker 8: subscription model, like through the subscription model, this is, you know,
- 30:24Speaker 8: it's basically like a rental.
- 30:26Speaker 3: So it's Culligan-owned and operated equipment.
- 30:28Speaker 8: If you want to buy it from us, we'll apply
- 30:31Speaker 8: up to 12 months rental credit towards the purchase price
- 30:34Speaker 8: of that equipment.
- 30:37Speaker 4: I'm trying to think of what a barrier would be
- 30:38Speaker 4: for people so I can ask you a question to
- 30:40Speaker 4: knock that barrier down. But seriously, this feels like kind
- 30:43Speaker 4: of a no-brainer. 801-509-9602 or CulliganSLC.com. Colson and Kent are
- 30:50Speaker 4: going to be in here throughout the show. We'll be
- 30:52Speaker 4: asking more questions. We'll be doing this all day. And
- 30:55Speaker 4: if you have any, text them in, 877-353-0700. If you're
- 30:59Speaker 4: wondering about a Culligan water system, we've got them here
- 31:01Speaker 4: for the whole show. So text me your questions. I'll
- 31:04Speaker 4: present them on the air. Guys, we'll be back in
- 31:07Speaker 4: like 25, 30 minutes.
- 31:08Speaker 9: Perfect.
- 31:09Speaker 4: More stuff. 509-9602, CulliganSLC.com. Eric Woodyer joins us next to
- 31:15Speaker 4: preview Thursday Night Football. It's ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 31:19Speaker 4: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell show for the Murdoch
- 31:28Speaker 4: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM. Welcome back
- 31:39Speaker 4: to the Sean O'Connell show time for a little Thursday
- 31:41Speaker 4: night football preview. Lions bills tonight. Kickoff at 6 Mountain Time.
- 31:47Speaker 4: We're lucky enough to welcome Detroit Lions reporter and insider
- 31:51Speaker 4: Eric Woodyard, a familiar face and name who used to
- 31:55Speaker 4: be with us here in Utah, but moved on to
- 31:58Speaker 4: what I hope are bigger and better things.
- 32:00Speaker 3: Eric Woodyard, welcome back to the show. How are you?
- 32:03Speaker 6: What's up? What's up, man? How you doing?
- 32:04Speaker 4: Doing all right. How's life treating you on the new gig,
- 32:07Speaker 4: new-ish gig?
- 32:08Speaker 6: It's been cool, man. I'm out of Buffalo right now,
- 32:10Speaker 6: so I'm Been eating so many wings, I feel like
- 32:13Speaker 6: I'm about to explode.
- 32:16Speaker 4: I did see that. Is that a rental that was
- 32:18Speaker 4: the Bronco? And you were like, I don't know if
- 32:19Speaker 4: I should be driving. Any issues driving a Bronco in
- 32:23Speaker 4: Bill's country?
- 32:23Speaker 9: No, I'm cool, man.
- 32:25Speaker 6: I'm cool.
- 32:25Speaker 9: I'm cool. That's good.
- 32:27Speaker 4: That's good. All right, let's talk a little Lions here. Obviously,
- 32:30Speaker 4: there is some local interest, Panay Sewell. is a guy
- 32:33Speaker 4: that did his prep ball here in the state of Utah.
- 32:36Speaker 4: And then Sione Vaki, who's now the second string running
- 32:39Speaker 4: back for the Lions, played at the University of Utah.
- 32:42Speaker 4: I want to start with Panay Sewell making the move
- 32:45Speaker 4: to left tackle this year. We've got a one game
- 32:48Speaker 4: example of what that looks like.
- 32:50Speaker 3: What are you hearing?
- 32:51Speaker 4: What are they saying in Detroit about that transition for Panay?
- 32:55Speaker 6: I mean, so far, so good. You know, Jared Goff,
- 32:57Speaker 6: we spoke to him, and, you know, I asked him
- 32:59Speaker 6: kind of before, you know, he was saying he almost,
- 33:01Speaker 6: he's done it pretty seamless. I mean, at this point,
- 33:04Speaker 6: you know, Sewell is one of the, you know, one
- 33:06Speaker 6: of the foundational pieces of the team. Ever since he
- 33:09Speaker 6: was drafted seventh overall in, you know, 2021, you know,
- 33:12Speaker 6: he's become one of those guys. So, you know, he's
- 33:15Speaker 6: made the transition pretty seamlessly. He hadn't played it since
- 33:18Speaker 6: he was, you know, back in college at Oregon, but...
- 33:20Speaker 6: Right now, he's doing good, but the Lions are going
- 33:22Speaker 6: to be out without two starters this week. He's going
- 33:25Speaker 6: to have to take on a lot of that load.
- 33:27Speaker 6: They're going to be without left guard Christian Mahogany and
- 33:30Speaker 6: without right tackle Blake Miller. That's a big loss for
- 33:33Speaker 6: this team coming into the game.
- 33:34Speaker 4: How do they feel about the offensive line depth? It's
- 33:36Speaker 4: always like an oxymoron, offensive line and depth, because nobody
- 33:41Speaker 4: has everything they need when it comes to backup offensive linemen.
- 33:45Speaker 4: But are they in a good spot with the twos?
- 33:48Speaker 6: I mean, of course they're going to tell us that.
- 33:49Speaker 6: You know, you got Ben Bartz and Larry Borum filling in. But,
- 33:53Speaker 6: I mean, it's only a small sample size.
- 33:55Speaker 10: We're only going into week two, so we got to
- 33:57Speaker 10: really see.
- 33:58Speaker 6: I'm not sure personally, but, I mean, you know, Dan
- 34:01Speaker 6: Campbell and those guys, they're feeling confident in the guys. But,
- 34:04Speaker 6: you know, it's going to be– you're going against one
- 34:05Speaker 6: of the best players in the league in Josh Allen. So,
- 34:08Speaker 6: you know, if any– you know, and that defense as well. So,
- 34:11Speaker 6: you know, any– they want to have every advantage that
- 34:13Speaker 6: they can. Obviously– Josh isn't going against the O-line, of course,
- 34:17Speaker 6: but still, they want to be at their best to
- 34:19Speaker 6: try to get themselves in a position. I'm not sure
- 34:21Speaker 6: how that O-line looks. I'm just being honest. I'm not
- 34:24Speaker 6: sure how it looks without those guys.
- 34:26Speaker 4: You wrote a good piece, I guess about a month
- 34:27Speaker 4: ago now, on whether or not the Lions Super Bowl
- 34:31Speaker 4: window is open. Transparently, I'm a Niners guy, and I
- 34:34Speaker 4: asked that same question about San Francisco. Whose windows are
- 34:38Speaker 4: opening and closing in the 2026 season?
- 34:40Speaker 3: I think.
- 34:42Speaker 4: San Francisco, because of age and a lack of depth,
- 34:44Speaker 4: is one of those teams that if everything goes well, yes,
- 34:47Speaker 4: they should be okay. The Lions, maybe for other reasons,
- 34:51Speaker 4: if everything goes okay, I could see them being a
- 34:53Speaker 4: Super Bowl contender, a significant injury here or there, and
- 34:57Speaker 4: I'm not so convinced. Why are the Lions feeling like
- 35:00Speaker 4: their Super Bowl window is still open?
- 35:03Speaker 6: I mean, you got to look at number one there,
- 35:05Speaker 6: and they committed over a billion dollars to their core.
- 35:07Speaker 6: You know, even this offseason, they paid Jameer Gears, making
- 35:10Speaker 6: him the highest-paid NFL running back in history. You know,
- 35:13Speaker 6: they paid Jack Campbell, the all-pro linebacker. But you also
- 35:15Speaker 6: got Amirat St. Brown. You got Panay Sewell. You got
- 35:18Speaker 6: Aidan Hutchinson. You got, you know, even Jared Goff. And
- 35:21Speaker 6: most of these guys on his team are 25 years
- 35:24Speaker 6: old or younger. You know what I mean? So I
- 35:26Speaker 6: think that gives them the confidence that, hey, we got
- 35:28Speaker 6: all these, you know, pro-bowl-level and all-pro guys here. And
- 35:31Speaker 6: we put them in this window of the next two
- 35:33Speaker 6: to three years. And I think if everything goes well,
- 35:35Speaker 6: they see themselves in that spot. But like you say,
- 35:37Speaker 6: everything has to go well. I mean, this team has
- 35:39Speaker 6: been plagued by injuries the last couple of seasons. And,
- 35:43Speaker 6: you know, even right now, you got Kirby Joseph and
- 35:45Speaker 6: Brian Branch out, both of their safeties, who was a
- 35:48Speaker 6: part of that core, what they built, that foundation. But
- 35:50Speaker 6: I think if everything goes as.
- 35:52Speaker 10: Well, the window could be open at least another two years.
- 35:54Speaker 6: Just because they're running things much differently in Detroit now
- 35:58Speaker 6: than they did back in the day as far as
- 36:00Speaker 6: signing and developing these guys and, you know, bringing them
- 36:02Speaker 6: back in and showing that they want these guys there. So,
- 36:05Speaker 6: and the guys that produced the ones that they've drafted.
- 36:07Speaker 6: So I think the window is open for a couple
- 36:09Speaker 6: more years.
- 36:09Speaker 9: At least.
- 36:10Speaker 4: They just restructured some big contracts to open cap space.
- 36:13Speaker 4: And the last comment I saw about that was we
- 36:16Speaker 4: don't know what we're going to do with this 30
- 36:18Speaker 4: or so million dollars, whether it's committing it to guys
- 36:21Speaker 4: that are already here or it's making a move and
- 36:24Speaker 4: getting another piece. I mean, we're in season now. So
- 36:28Speaker 4: what do you think the plan is with that restructuring
- 36:32Speaker 4: of Amon Ross, St. Brown, and Panay Sewell and the
- 36:35Speaker 4: flexibility under the cap now?
- 36:38Speaker 6: Yeah, I think it was simply that, just giving themselves
- 36:40Speaker 6: some flexibility. They still have to figure out what they're
- 36:42Speaker 6: going to do with, you know, Sam LaPorter, who's coming
- 36:44Speaker 6: up on extension, and Brian Branch, who's coming up. Both
- 36:47Speaker 6: of those guys are available for extensions as well. And
- 36:50Speaker 6: as I said before, they committed over a billion dollars
- 36:52Speaker 6: in extensions and, you know, contracts as well. So I think,
- 36:56Speaker 6: you know, in some aspect, it could be, you know,
- 36:58Speaker 6: freeing up some space to sign one of those guys.
- 37:00Speaker 6: And then it could be, you know, if this team
- 37:02Speaker 6: gets off to a rough start, you know, bringing in
- 37:04Speaker 6: another guy to help in the secondary or somebody on
- 37:07Speaker 6: the defense or even offensive lineman. So I think it's
- 37:10Speaker 6: just giving them options. At this point, I don't think
- 37:12Speaker 6: it's like, hey, we're going to make a trade tomorrow.
- 37:14Speaker 6: I think it was really just, you know, giving them options.
- 37:17Speaker 4: NFL football, like every level of football, is very quarterback-driven.
- 37:22Speaker 4: Is Jared Goff in the right space mentally, health-wise, age-wise,
- 37:27Speaker 4: that he can still lead this team to their highest potential?
- 37:31Speaker 6: I think so, man. I did a story on him today.
- 37:33Speaker 6: He's become a father in the last year. He's also married.
- 37:39Speaker 6: From me just observing him, I've been around him since
- 37:42Speaker 6: 2021 now when he first got to Detroit. It just
- 37:44Speaker 6: felt like he was a lot lighter entering his training
- 37:46Speaker 6: camp and I think, you know, the pressure is not
- 37:50Speaker 6: really from, you know, the outside. It's more so of
- 37:52Speaker 6: him feeling like, okay, I'm at my best right now.
- 37:55Speaker 6: I got all the weapons I need to be successful,
- 37:58Speaker 6: and I want to capitalize as much as I can
- 38:00Speaker 6: right now, so I think he's playing with a sense
- 38:03Speaker 6: of urgency to try to get this team back to
- 38:04Speaker 6: the playoffs and try to maximize on what they can
- 38:07Speaker 6: do because he do understand that Super Bowl window doesn't
- 38:10Speaker 6: stay open long, and if it's going to happen, it's
- 38:12Speaker 6: going to happen within these next couple of years, and
- 38:14Speaker 6: I think he's He's in the right mental space right
- 38:17Speaker 6: now where he's strictly focused on football and trying to win.
- 38:20Speaker 4: A little Thursday night football preview here on the Sean
- 38:23Speaker 4: O'Connell Show with Eric Woodyard, ESPN, Detroit Lions insider. What
- 38:29Speaker 4: is Aiden Hutchinson going to be for Detroit this year?
- 38:32Speaker 4: A healthy him is one of the best players in
- 38:34Speaker 4: the league, I think. Can they keep him healthy? And
- 38:38Speaker 4: if they do, what does his stat line look like?
- 38:41Speaker 6: I mean, we're looking at a player who could potentially
- 38:43Speaker 6: be the defensive player of the year. I mean, that's...
- 38:45Speaker 6: That's his, you know, his ceiling right there. And they
- 38:48Speaker 6: kept him healthy last year. I mean, you know, he's
- 38:50Speaker 6: almost two years removed from that. So I don't even
- 38:51Speaker 6: think that's in his mind frame or his head space anymore.
- 38:55Speaker 6: I think you're looking at a guy who's one of
- 38:57Speaker 6: the best in the league and one of the best
- 38:58Speaker 6: at what he does. You know, you even look at
- 39:00Speaker 6: the week one game. I think he had two sacks.
- 39:02Speaker 6: You know, I mean, he's definitely a man on a
- 39:05Speaker 6: mission this year. And I think, you know, they're going
- 39:07Speaker 6: to need him to be at his best. I'm not
- 39:09Speaker 6: really concerned about the D line. It's more with the
- 39:11Speaker 6: secondary when I'm looking at this Lions defense. And Hutch
- 39:14Speaker 6: is one of the leaders.
- 39:18Speaker 4: I mean, obviously a pass rush helps out with that secondary.
- 39:20Speaker 4: You mentioned maybe they're a little bit banged up, but
- 39:25Speaker 4: when you express that concern, is the secondary good enough
- 39:28Speaker 4: to hold water and let the rest of this team
- 39:32Speaker 4: make them good enough? Or is it a real liability
- 39:35Speaker 4: that other teams are going to exploit to the detriment
- 39:38Speaker 4: of these Lions?
- 39:39Speaker 6: I can only go off what I watched them do
- 39:42Speaker 6: versus New Orleans. We didn't think that game would be
- 39:44Speaker 6: as close. They could potentially also be playing without You know,
- 39:49Speaker 6: another one of their guys back there as well today,
- 39:51Speaker 6: you know, DJ Reed is questionable as well tonight. So,
- 39:54Speaker 6: I mean, they're going to need literally everything they can
- 39:57Speaker 6: to already, you know, try to beat this Bills team. But, yeah,
- 40:00Speaker 6: I mean, it's definitely something to worry about. But like
- 40:05Speaker 6: I say, it's only week two, so we'll see if
- 40:07Speaker 6: these guys get better. They got Rockets in and Keith
- 40:10Speaker 6: Abney and Chuck Clark, Devontae Maddox, some of those guys
- 40:12Speaker 6: back there. But they're going to need to step up
- 40:15Speaker 6: for sure. But at some point, the Lions will also
- 40:17Speaker 6: be getting back, you know, Kirby Joseph and Brian Branch,
- 40:19Speaker 6: which will help them as well. But, yeah, it's definitely
- 40:23Speaker 6: a concern, I feel.
- 40:26Speaker 4: How much are we going to see Sione Bakke this year? Obviously,
- 40:28Speaker 4: Ute fans have a certain amount of affection for him
- 40:31Speaker 4: and what he did at the University of Utah on
- 40:34Speaker 4: both offense and on defense. He's playing running back in
- 40:37Speaker 4: the league, and he's a good special teamer as well.
- 40:39Speaker 4: But he's backing up one of the best guys in
- 40:41Speaker 4: the NFL. How much do we see him?
- 40:44Speaker 6: Oh, man, I'm not sure, man. I mean, for now,
- 40:46Speaker 6: it's the Jameer Gibbs. So, you see what he was
- 40:47Speaker 6: able to do. You know, this guy getting a career-high
- 40:50Speaker 6: 34 touches, you know, 29 carries, 156 yards rushing, and,
- 40:55Speaker 6: you know, 30 receiving yards. I mean, he's doing it all.
- 40:58Speaker 6: You know, he's the bell-cow guy. So, I mean, knock
- 41:01Speaker 6: on wood, and if something happens to Gibbs, which, you know,
- 41:04Speaker 6: and I expect not to happen, but, I mean, I
- 41:07Speaker 6: don't know how much, you know, he's going to get, but,
- 41:08Speaker 6: I mean, it's the Jameer Gibbs show. So, Seoni Vaki
- 41:11Speaker 6: definitely is appreciated on special teams, and Dan Campbell and
- 41:14Speaker 6: those guys really love him. They've really worked hard to
- 41:17Speaker 6: develop him, but it's just the Jameer Gibbs show this year.
- 41:20Speaker 6: And that's why I got rid of David Montgomery because
- 41:22Speaker 6: even as good as Montgomery is, you see he had
- 41:24Speaker 6: three touchdowns in his debut with the Texans. They got
- 41:28Speaker 6: rid of him to free it up for Jameer Gibbs.
- 41:30Speaker 6: So I'm not sure, man. I mean, it's all Gibbs
- 41:33Speaker 6: right now.
- 41:34Speaker 4: Have you had a chance to get inside the new
- 41:36Speaker 4: stadium in Buffalo yet?
- 41:38Speaker 9: No, not yet.
- 41:39Speaker 6: No, I'll be getting there very early. I've been on
- 41:42Speaker 6: a wing tour since I've been here. I've been to
- 41:44Speaker 6: about four or five different places. The whole Detroit media,
- 41:48Speaker 6: we've been going around and just sampling stuff. But I'm
- 41:50Speaker 6: going to plan to get there early today and check
- 41:52Speaker 6: everything out. I think it's going to be really cool.
- 41:56Speaker 4: It's E underscore Woodyard, if you're not already following Eric
- 41:59Speaker 4: on Twitter. Before I let you go, I've got to ask.
- 42:03Speaker 4: We don't know a lot of Western Michigan alum, all right?
- 42:06Speaker 4: And you might not want to be talking about it, but...
- 42:10Speaker 4: A great, a grave injustice was done in week one
- 42:13Speaker 4: of the college football season. Now the FPS competition committee
- 42:17Speaker 4: has acknowledged that replay protocol was not followed. The results
- 42:21Speaker 4: should be different, but Oh, sorry.
- 42:23Speaker 3: Nothing we can.
- 42:23Speaker 4: Do about it. Tell me how you're feeling. Tell me
- 42:27Speaker 4: how you're feeling after all that.
- 42:29Speaker 6: Hey, I'm still a Bronco to the court, man. That's
- 42:31Speaker 6: my squad. That's my school. And we got robbed and
- 42:34Speaker 6: I could have been a generational win for us, but
- 42:37Speaker 6: it's only going to push us to try to come
- 42:40Speaker 6: and win the MAAC and have one of the best
- 42:42Speaker 6: seasons we've had in a long time, probably since the
- 42:44Speaker 6: World of Boat days with Corey Davis and, you know,
- 42:47Speaker 6: those guys were undefeated that year. So I think definitely
- 42:50Speaker 6: we got robbed. We should have beat them. And, yeah,
- 42:52Speaker 6: I mean, it sucks. I mean, what can happen? So, yeah,
- 42:55Speaker 6: y'all acknowledge it, but it don't mean nothing. So we
- 42:57Speaker 6: just got to put that into the rest of the season.
- 42:59Speaker 4: Does the acknowledgement make it any worse? Because I hate
- 43:01Speaker 4: this when, like, the NBA comes out and is like, oh,
- 43:06Speaker 4: that should have been a foul, should have got two
- 43:08Speaker 4: shots there. They do these things after the game, and
- 43:10Speaker 4: they say, this was an error, but nothing can be
- 43:13Speaker 4: done about it. I almost don't want to hear it.
- 43:15Speaker 4: As a Western Michigan alum, is it better if they
- 43:18Speaker 4: just let it die instead of saying, oh, yeah.
- 43:19Speaker 6: Just let it die.
- 43:20Speaker 12: Okay.
- 43:23Speaker 6: Let it die.
- 43:25Speaker 5: All right.
- 43:26Speaker 3: We'll let it die there.
- 43:27Speaker 6: We got the recognition. I'm glad I gave it to recognition.
- 43:29Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 43:30Speaker 4: Look, it was a great game for Western Michigan. Like
- 43:33Speaker 4: on paper, Michigan won that game in everybody's hearts. It's
- 43:37Speaker 4: your alma mater that won that game. So I don't
- 43:39Speaker 4: know if that's worth anything, but that's how everyone feels
- 43:41Speaker 4: about it.
- 43:42Speaker 6: Well, I appreciate it, man.
- 43:43Speaker 9: Thank you, Eric.
- 43:45Speaker 4: Thanks for giving us some time today. Enjoy the game tonight.
- 43:47Speaker 4: We'll have you on again later in the year.
- 43:48Speaker 6: All right. No problem. I appreciate you.
- 43:51Speaker 4: That's Eric Woodyard. now reporting on the Detroit Lions for ESPN,
- 43:57Speaker 4: at E underscore Woodyard on Twitter. Good stuff from him,
- 44:01Speaker 4: including a great new article that he just referenced about
- 44:04Speaker 4: Jared Goff becoming a dad and talking about how that
- 44:08Speaker 4: changes him as a quarterback and as a football player
- 44:11Speaker 4: and all that stuff, which, you know, if you're a dad,
- 44:14Speaker 4: especially of young kids like I am, it's a sentimental
- 44:17Speaker 4: piece while also still being a football piece. So go
- 44:20Speaker 4: read Eric's stuff. Big thanks to him for joining us.
- 44:23Speaker 4: Well done, James, for getting him on. Thursday night football
- 44:26Speaker 4: is Lions at Bills, 6 p.m. on Amazon Prime. We
- 44:32Speaker 4: got a PGA Tour leaderboard update from the Biltmore Championship next.
- 44:36Speaker 4: We'll talk with the Culligan guys again, and then Eric
- 44:38Speaker 4: Weddle joining us at noon. It's the Sean O'Connell Show
- 44:42Speaker 4: on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 44:48Speaker 5: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show from.
- 45:00Speaker 4: The Murdoch Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM. 877-353-0700.
- 45:03Speaker 4: If you want to answer the poll question I have
- 45:04Speaker 4: on Twitter, but do it here. Is this year's Utah team,
- 45:08Speaker 4: based on what we've seen through two games, are they
- 45:10Speaker 4: as good as last year's team? Are they better? Are
- 45:14Speaker 4: they maybe not quite as good? Right now, better is
- 45:18Speaker 4: winning the poll. Plenty of time left on it. Some
- 45:21Speaker 4: responses on the text line when we get to it
- 45:23Speaker 4: here in just a second. Right now, a PGA Tour
- 45:26Speaker 4: leaderboard update from the Biltmore Championship brought to you by
- 45:29Speaker 4: Uintah Golf by Worldwide Golf. Visit in-store for a free
- 45:32Speaker 4: custom fit to get you into golf or shop online
- 45:35Speaker 4: at worldwidegolf.com.
- 45:37Speaker 3: Get there.
- 45:38Speaker 4: All right, James, what does the leaderboard look like at Biltmore?
- 45:43Speaker 2: Biltmore Championship in Asheville. I believe North Carolina there. Coles
- 45:51Speaker 2: is your leader. Ben Coles.
- 45:55Speaker 3: Ben Coles is your leader.
- 45:57Speaker 2: He's tied for first, in fact, with Chris Kirk.
- 46:01Speaker 3: Christian Kirk? No, Chris Kirk.
- 46:04Speaker 2: Mackenzie Hughes, the Canadian, also tied atop of the leaderboard.
- 46:09Speaker 2: And Max Gracerman. is also tied at six under. Alone
- 46:16Speaker 2: in fifth is Cam Davis from.
- 46:19Speaker 4: Oz, right?
- 46:20Speaker 3: Australia? Is that how you say that?
- 46:22Speaker 2: Don't get me started on that again. Tied for sixth.
- 46:26Speaker 2: You have a bunch of guys, including Nick Dunlap and
- 46:33Speaker 2: let's see, Chad Ramey, and that's at four under there.
- 46:40Speaker 2: A couple shots off the lead. That rounds out your
- 46:42Speaker 2: top ten of the Biltmore Championship. This is the time
- 46:47Speaker 2: of year we learned last year, OC. It's the guys
- 46:49Speaker 2: who are trying to hold on to their tour card,
- 46:51Speaker 2: trying to get extra points. After the FedEx Cup Championship,
- 46:57Speaker 2: which ends in August, the bigger names, they don't need
- 47:00Speaker 2: to keep getting points to compete on the tour next year, obviously.
- 47:04Speaker 2: So this is the time of year, guys getting extra
- 47:07Speaker 2: work in. and getting more FedExCup points to be able
- 47:10Speaker 2: to hold onto their tour cards.
- 47:11Speaker 3: So this is your time of year for them.
- 47:13Speaker 4: It's your time to shine if you're like, you know,
- 47:17Speaker 4: Lucas Glover. Let's go.
- 47:20Speaker 3: Let's go.
- 47:21Speaker 2: So that's your PGA Tour leaderboard update brought to you
- 47:23Speaker 2: by You Went to Golf.
- 47:25Speaker 4: You Went to Golf by Worldwide Golf. All right, here
- 47:27Speaker 4: we go.
- 47:28Speaker 6: Um.
- 47:31Speaker 4: I wouldn't say this year's team is better than last
- 47:33Speaker 4: year's team. I would say this year's team definitely has
- 47:35Speaker 4: more enthusiasm and there's a noticeable renewed sense of enthusiasm
- 47:39Speaker 4: on the year's team. All right.
- 47:40Speaker 3: I like it.
- 47:42Speaker 4: Ryan and Ogden says this year's team and last year's
- 47:44Speaker 4: teams close interior D line healthier so far. I feel
- 47:48Speaker 4: like the offense will not be as one dimensional against
- 47:50Speaker 4: better teams. We'll be able to pass when needed. Go Utes.
- 47:54Speaker 4: That is a great text. That is a great piece
- 47:57Speaker 4: of feedback. That might be as important or more important
- 48:00Speaker 4: than any other thing that we talk about or hear
- 48:02Speaker 4: because the ability to run these crazy plays, the ability
- 48:08Speaker 4: to spread out your offense, the ability to be unpredictable.
- 48:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 48:12Speaker 4: It matters against Idaho yet matters against crappy Arkansas. It's
- 48:15Speaker 4: going to matter a heck of a lot more against
- 48:17Speaker 4: Houston and BYU and Colorado and your big 12 schedule.
- 48:21Speaker 4: So great observation there from Ryan in Ogden. Colson and
- 48:26Speaker 4: Kent from Culligan Water, Salt Lake City, here in studio
- 48:30Speaker 4: with us once again. Guys, I didn't even ask you
- 48:32Speaker 4: the poll question of the day. Based on a two-game
- 48:34Speaker 4: sample size, is this year's team better than last year?
- 48:39Speaker 4: Like equivalent or maybe not quite as good as last year?
- 48:42Speaker 4: Based on what we've seen, it's still guesswork at this point.
- 48:45Speaker 3: Colson, you first. I think the offense is better.
- 48:48Speaker 4: That's what I said.
- 48:48Speaker 8: And I think the offense could average better.
- 48:52Speaker 3: Can I say like 75 points a game? Is that crazy?
- 48:56Speaker 3: It looks like every time they touch the ball, they're
- 48:59Speaker 3: going to score. It's awesome.
- 49:00Speaker 4: You can't say 75 points a game. Maybe like 45. Okay, fine.
- 49:04Speaker 4: I'll go 45. Last year, they had the top five
- 49:06Speaker 4: offense in the country. And to be better than that
- 49:09Speaker 4: would really be something.
- 49:10Speaker 3: Love the two quarterback thing.
- 49:12Speaker 11: I mean, it's hard to say if you if you
- 49:14Speaker 11: look at like the two loss season that were better
- 49:17Speaker 11: than exactly but i i do think and i think
- 49:22Speaker 11: the secondary's much improved.
- 49:24Speaker 4: All right nate richie's been playing out of his mind
- 49:27Speaker 4: through the first two games i love it uh i
- 49:29Speaker 4: did put.
- 49:29Speaker 3: A there's some high quality h2o up there at the
- 49:32Speaker 3: u by the.
- 49:32Speaker 4: Way they it quarterback. Number one, Devin damn peer. He's
- 49:36Speaker 4: a Culligan salt Lake city disciple. This coming in on
- 49:40Speaker 4: our text line. And I love it. 8 7 7
- 49:42Speaker 4: 3 5 3 0 700. If you have any questions
- 49:45Speaker 4: for the Culligan guys, send them in. I'll pass them on,
- 49:48Speaker 4: on air while we're here.
- 49:50Speaker 3: All right. All right.
- 49:51Speaker 4: How does it work with an apartment that if you
- 49:53Speaker 4: live in the software to the systems, if you would
- 49:56Speaker 4: ask them, that would be nice. Thank you. How does
- 49:59Speaker 4: it work in an apartment?
- 50:00Speaker 8: So you can get a landlord-tenant agreement. So we can
- 50:03Speaker 8: go to the landlord depending on the type of apartment
- 50:05Speaker 8: that it is. Or if there's a big apartment complex,
- 50:09Speaker 8: we can actually put in a commercial-sized system for the
- 50:12Speaker 8: whole complex.
- 50:13Speaker 12: Nice.
- 50:13Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 50:14Speaker 4: So there's solutions.
- 50:15Speaker 3: There are options.
- 50:15Speaker 4: If you're just renting or if you own an apartment
- 50:18Speaker 4: complex and you want to get better water, soft water
- 50:21Speaker 4: for your– for your tenants, which by the way, I
- 50:24Speaker 4: just read that big article they did. Apparently you got
- 50:26Speaker 4: to like spiff it up because there's an over, there's
- 50:29Speaker 4: a flooding of available rental spaces in the market. So
- 50:33Speaker 4: like Culligan water.
- 50:35Speaker 3: Hey, if you don't have better water for your tenants.
- 50:37Speaker 4: If you can offer them filtered water, that's a.
- 50:39Speaker 8: Nice little, and if you want a drinking water solution,
- 50:41Speaker 8: you can always do the five gallon jugs that we
- 50:44Speaker 8: deliver to office buildings, you know, apartments, uh, homes all
- 50:48Speaker 8: over the city.
- 50:49Speaker 4: So the, There's a couple of ways we could approach this.
- 50:51Speaker 4: And I'm glad you just brought up the drinking water thing.
- 50:53Speaker 4: Cause like, yeah, there's the, the hard water and the
- 50:56Speaker 4: soft water and the, how does it feel when I
- 50:58Speaker 4: shower and all that? But for me, I'll be honest,
- 51:01Speaker 4: I'm a lot more worried about the quality of my
- 51:03Speaker 4: drinking water and the drinking water for myself and the
- 51:06Speaker 4: drinking water for my family, especially you got young kids.
- 51:09Speaker 4: I got three little girls who knows what's in the water.
- 51:12Speaker 8: There's this emergence of microplastics and forever chemicals that can
- 51:16Speaker 8: cross the blood-brain barrier, cause cancer, build up in your system.
- 51:19Speaker 3: Yeah, you want to drink purified water.
- 51:22Speaker 4: And you guys have whole home filters. You have the
- 51:24Speaker 4: filtered water that you can just drink out of the
- 51:27Speaker 4: jug here like you're in the office. You've got solutions
- 51:29Speaker 4: all over the place.
- 51:30Speaker 3: Absolutely. And it all starts with a free water test.
- 51:32Speaker 3: Let us come out. Let us educate you.
- 51:34Speaker 8: That's one of the real benefits of going with the
- 51:37Speaker 8: Culligan system is.
- 51:38Speaker 3: We're water treatment professionals, right? We're not here to.
- 51:40Speaker 8: you know, sell you a water heater and repair and
- 51:43Speaker 8: replace your toilet. Like we're here to really fix the
- 51:46Speaker 8: water issues within the community. And so we come out
- 51:50Speaker 8: with a consultative approach. And so, you know, we come out,
- 51:55Speaker 8: we actually get a baseline of the water in your
- 51:57Speaker 8: home before we start recommending solutions. And we get a
- 52:00Speaker 8: feel for what you and your family really are concerned
- 52:02Speaker 8: about and what your needs are.
- 52:04Speaker 3: And then we go from there.
- 52:05Speaker 4: And I live in the avenues, right? Um, and Ken,
- 52:07Speaker 4: we've talked about this before, like, if you live in
- 52:10Speaker 4: the avenues, you probably have some issues. If you're down
- 52:12Speaker 4: in more of the new development in, in Harriman or Lehigh,
- 52:15Speaker 4: you might have different issues with your water. So it's
- 52:17Speaker 4: really important to know exactly what you need to fix
- 52:21Speaker 4: before you try to fix anything.
- 52:22Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 52:23Speaker 11: A new subdivision could be going in and they tap
- 52:25Speaker 11: into a new water source and they're building new lines.
- 52:29Speaker 7: It, the water is, is constantly changing.
- 52:32Speaker 11: One of the really great things about Coligan equipment is the,
- 52:37Speaker 11: This equipment can adjust to the water changing constantly. Other
- 52:41Speaker 11: softeners don't do that. There's so much technology in these
- 52:46Speaker 11: softeners that it knows. The water is getting harder. We
- 52:51Speaker 11: need to regen sooner. And so it helps keep your
- 52:54Speaker 11: efficiency better. You're wasting less water. You're using less salt
- 52:59Speaker 11: and providing the best solutions to your family.
- 53:03Speaker 4: So give me a reason for our listeners to call today.
- 53:05Speaker 4: Like I know you guys come in here, you take
- 53:07Speaker 4: care of us all the time, but for folks who've
- 53:10Speaker 4: been on the fence, what can we do to push
- 53:11Speaker 4: them over the edge today?
- 53:13Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 53:13Speaker 7: Everybody listening to ESPN 700 today.
- 53:15Speaker 11: We've got a special offer, but you've got to call

- 54:14Speaker 4: on FM. The world is, the world is love and
- 54:16Speaker 4: life are deep.
- 54:20Speaker 12: Maybe as.

- 54:29Speaker 5: source for the best youth football coverage. Here's O.C. from
- 54:33Speaker 5: the Murdoch Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 54:42Speaker 4: Welcome back to The Sean O'Connell Show. Welcome in the
- 54:44Speaker 4: Utah football legend and recent Ring of Honor inductee, the
- 54:48Speaker 4: Super Bowl champion, the head coach of the Rancho Bernardo Broncos,
- 54:52Speaker 4: our guy Eric Weddle. Buona sera, Eric Weddle.
- 54:56Speaker 3: How are you?
- 54:58Speaker 12: What's the word?
- 54:58Speaker 9: What's the word?
- 54:59Speaker 12: I'm out here in good old Italia, Italy for Silver's competition.
- 55:08Speaker 12: So I'm just hanging out, getting some pizza right now
- 55:11Speaker 12: by myself.
- 55:13Speaker 4: How's the competition going so far? Have they done their
- 55:15Speaker 4: thing yet? Have they competed yet? How goes the dad life?
- 55:20Speaker 12: Yeah, it's great. Uh, they first, first comp, they have
- 55:23Speaker 12: basically two routines today and Saturday and then top 10
- 55:27Speaker 12: moved to Sunday to basically figure out who, who's the
- 55:33Speaker 12: world champ. So, uh, they did pretty well today. They're,
- 55:37Speaker 12: they're in, uh, I think around 20th out of 42 countries.
- 55:40Speaker 12: So they got some work to do on Saturday to make,
- 55:43Speaker 12: make Sunday.
- 55:44Speaker 9: So fingers crossed.
- 55:45Speaker 4: What, uh, what level of expertise in this sport have
- 55:48Speaker 4: you developed, uh, watching, right? Because like, that's one thing
- 55:52Speaker 4: I'm guilty of. I watched the Olympics and like three
- 55:55Speaker 4: days of watching gymnastics or swimming or whatever.
- 55:57Speaker 3: I'm just like, Oh, that's terrible.
- 55:59Speaker 4: Oh, that was the best thing I've ever seen. So, uh,
- 56:02Speaker 4: how big of an expert are you on this acrobatic
- 56:04Speaker 4: stuff after her involvement?
- 56:06Speaker 12: I'm definitely a pro. Like I can, I can, I
- 56:10Speaker 12: know when there's deductions, I know when it looks good and,
- 56:13Speaker 12: The artistry, I don't really know how they get points
- 56:17Speaker 12: or not, but the skills, the actual skills, when they're
- 56:20Speaker 12: throwing each other up and holding is insane. It's really
- 56:24Speaker 12: crazy and cool to see. a kid be so dedicated
- 56:33Speaker 12: and passionate about something that they're in the world stage.
- 56:35Speaker 12: So it's just here. The supporter is pretty awesome.
- 56:38Speaker 4: It's really great.
- 56:39Speaker 6: All right.
- 56:39Speaker 4: Let's talk a little Utah football. Let's talk last Saturday night,
- 56:43Speaker 4: a big night for all of us who love you
- 56:45Speaker 4: so much to see your name go up on the
- 56:47Speaker 4: side of the building. And you know, the, the drone show,
- 56:50Speaker 4: like the full on beard and Mohawk show. in lights
- 56:55Speaker 4: at the drone show. I don't know if you expected that,
- 56:57Speaker 4: but just tell me how it felt, you know, that
- 56:59Speaker 4: ceremony and that, that moment where you were honored officially.
- 57:04Speaker 12: Yeah, it was man, the whole day, uh, you know,
- 57:07Speaker 12: we got up there, landed about one and then, uh,
- 57:11Speaker 12: got everything situated and heads up to the U around
- 57:15Speaker 12: five 30. And just for really from five 30 to
- 57:18Speaker 12: about halftime, I was, uh, running around and, uh, Seeing fans,
- 57:24Speaker 12: seeing donors, just saying hi and thanks and really seeing
- 57:29Speaker 12: the support and having people share stories and telling me
- 57:34Speaker 12: just what a joy it was for them to watch
- 57:38Speaker 12: me and how I made them proud really was like
- 57:40Speaker 12: some of the highlight of the whole 24-hour experience was
- 57:44Speaker 12: spending time with the fans and just sharing stories, sharing experiences,
- 57:50Speaker 12: and then obviously the whole halftime show. I didn't know...
- 57:54Speaker 12: what the whole drone, the drone show was going to
- 57:56Speaker 12: have me in it. They just made sure like, Hey,
- 57:58Speaker 12: make sure you watch the drone show at halftime. And
- 58:01Speaker 12: I was like, okay, like I'm not really, that's my
- 58:04Speaker 12: first live drone show. So that was pretty, pretty incredible.
- 58:07Speaker 3: It was cool.
- 58:09Speaker 4: I don't know if you heard this part of the story.
- 58:11Speaker 4: So our guy shark, uh, good friend of mutual friend
- 58:15Speaker 4: of Eric's of mine was down on the field. We're
- 58:18Speaker 4: talking and we saw it. We were, we were chatting.
- 58:21Speaker 4: We were looking at the drone show. He wasn't paying
- 58:23Speaker 4: much attention. He was like, and it was like, they
- 58:25Speaker 4: had made like, I don't know, the drum and feather
- 58:27Speaker 4: out of the drones or something. And he goes, it'd
- 58:29Speaker 4: be cool if they did something for, for Eric. It'd
- 58:32Speaker 4: be cool.
- 58:33Speaker 3: I was just like, just watch.
- 58:34Speaker 4: And then like the very next thing was, was you
- 58:37Speaker 4: with the number 32.
- 58:38Speaker 3: And he was like, Oh, okay.
- 58:39Speaker 4: They are doing something.
- 58:40Speaker 9: It was great.
- 58:41Speaker 4: We had a big laugh about that.
- 58:42Speaker 3: That was great.
- 58:44Speaker 12: It was, it was, it was awesome. Like, I don't
- 58:46Speaker 12: even know how that stuff, like how they even do that.
- 58:48Speaker 12: So way out of my league, but to see just
- 58:53Speaker 12: everything in capital, encapsulated, encapsulated, I don't even know that word,
- 58:58Speaker 12: but at halftime and just all the love was, was
- 59:03Speaker 12: really second to none.
- 59:05Speaker 4: It's really cool to see. And you and I talked
- 59:08Speaker 4: about this last week. for you. It's nice to be honored,
- 59:12Speaker 4: but you're a you till you die. So what you
- 59:14Speaker 4: really wanted was a good game from the football team
- 59:17Speaker 4: and you got that as well. So that's the more
- 59:19Speaker 4: important part of the recipe, I suppose.
- 59:20Speaker 12: Speaker 3, Oh, that's that. That was really the only
- 59:24Speaker 12: thing that mattered. And I was kind of... I didn't
- 59:28Speaker 12: really get to see much of the first half. I
- 59:29Speaker 12: was going sweet to sweet, saying hellos and whatnot. So
- 59:34Speaker 12: I've heard and saw some highlights of the first half
- 59:39Speaker 12: and how awesome it was. And, you know, then I
- 59:42Speaker 12: was able to sit down and take all the second
- 59:45Speaker 12: half in and see that. So I loved how... Really, like,
- 59:52Speaker 12: we talked about this last week and just... the understanding
- 59:56Speaker 12: that people on the outside don't know what they're, they're
- 59:59Speaker 12: getting themselves into when they come to a night game
- 1:00:01Speaker 12: in Salt Lake at Rice Eccles. Like it's a very unique, close, uh,
- 1:00:07Speaker 12: venture that you, you come here and you don't leave
- 1:00:10Speaker 12: with a win and you.
- 1:00:11Speaker 9: Usually get blasted.
- 1:00:12Speaker 12: So, uh, it was nice to see that and to
- 1:00:15Speaker 12: really take it to a SEC team, regardless of where
- 1:00:18Speaker 12: they're at. It will bode well with us over the
- 1:00:21Speaker 12: course of the season, just, to show how we stack
- 1:00:24Speaker 12: up against a talented team, even though they're not very good. We,
- 1:00:27Speaker 12: we treat them like such.
- 1:00:32Speaker 4: We've we've been complimenting Nate Ritchie this week for, I
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: think that, you know, for through a couple of games,
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: his play has been, he looks like he's playing a
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: little freer. It looks like he's playing a little faster.
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: Sounds like you only really got to watch half of
- 1:00:44Speaker 4: this game, but what have you noticed about him and
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: his improvements from last.
- 1:00:48Speaker 9: Year to this?
- 1:00:51Speaker 12: Yeah, I think Coach Odom has something to do with that.
- 1:00:57Speaker 12: Coach Odom is very detailed, really pushes the limits on
- 1:01:04Speaker 12: what you are as a player and opening the box.
- 1:01:07Speaker 12: I think with him and Nate, it's like... allowing him
- 1:01:11Speaker 12: he's he knows the system inside out right he's very
- 1:01:14Speaker 12: confident like allowing him to move around allowing him to
- 1:01:17Speaker 12: use his personality out there and really like like you
- 1:01:20Speaker 12: said like play free is so uh uh so huge
- 1:01:25Speaker 12: for a football player when you uh can get to
- 1:01:27Speaker 12: that point and i think you're seeing that and he's
- 1:01:29Speaker 12: making plays he's he's finally healthy right like for the
- 1:01:33Speaker 12: most part of the course of this career he's always
- 1:01:35Speaker 12: battled some type of injuries and He's a stud, and
- 1:01:39Speaker 12: he's a leader, and he's a guy that guys look to.
- 1:01:42Speaker 12: And now for him to be on the field making
- 1:01:43Speaker 12: plays is really, really awesome for him and not a
- 1:01:47Speaker 12: better guy because I've gotten to know him over the
- 1:01:50Speaker 12: last couple of years and always willing to listen and
- 1:01:53Speaker 12: work and looking for tidbits here and there. And to
- 1:01:56Speaker 12: see him taking it is really great to see.
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: Eric Wedler is our guest here on the Sean O'Connell show.
- 1:02:03Speaker 4: He is joining us live from Italy. That's how reliable
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: my guy is. He's, he's out supporting his daughter in
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: an international acrobatics competition. And he's still kind enough to
- 1:02:13Speaker 4: give us some time today to talk a little Utah football. This, uh,
- 1:02:16Speaker 4: that's the kind of friend we all need in life. Uh,
- 1:02:19Speaker 4: so this, this Utah offense, uh, the multiplicity, the crazy
- 1:02:24Speaker 4: different looks, the two quarterback thing, the 50 cent, the
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: half dollar formation, we're calling it cause it's two quarters. Uh,
- 1:02:32Speaker 4: As a defensive expert, as a guy who played at
- 1:02:34Speaker 4: the very, very highest level and tore apart and dissected
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: offenses pre-snap, give me some sense of what kind of
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: fits this causes for a safety, for a middle linebacker,
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: for someone who's trying to get his guys in the
- 1:02:48Speaker 4: right place before the snap happens defensively.
- 1:02:53Speaker 12: Yeah, I mean, I was in awe when I saw,
- 1:03:00Speaker 12: who was it? it was a bird handed to dev
- 1:03:04Speaker 12: on like an inside zone and they ran speed option
- 1:03:07Speaker 12: off of it. I've never, I've never seen that before.
- 1:03:11Speaker 12: And I'm like, this is, I'm adding it to our
- 1:03:13Speaker 12: playbook for one, two, I just need to find out
- 1:03:16Speaker 12: who can pitch it back to gauge. But that's the
- 1:03:21Speaker 12: priority one. But two, I'm like just the creativity and
- 1:03:24Speaker 12: the innovative mind. I mean, Morgan told us and talked
- 1:03:29Speaker 12: about this when he hired, put some given and just
- 1:03:33Speaker 12: said how he's able to adapt and work, you know,
- 1:03:37Speaker 12: change things up and formations and really pressure the defense.
- 1:03:41Speaker 12: I mean, that's one of the things, main things that
- 1:03:43Speaker 12: he took from the interview process and what he, what
- 1:03:47Speaker 12: he really liked and enjoyed about competing against him. So
- 1:03:51Speaker 12: to see it and just see how you're, you're always
- 1:03:53Speaker 12: keeping the defense on their toes and not knowing where
- 1:03:55Speaker 12: the ball is going and what, what, what are they
- 1:03:57Speaker 12: really trying to do? And the counters off of it is,
- 1:04:00Speaker 12: it's just like, It's fun to watch, man. It's like,
- 1:04:04Speaker 12: you know, every play you're like, what's going to be next.
- 1:04:07Speaker 12: And I know for our, for our coach, like, geez,
- 1:04:09Speaker 12: how do I keep up this, this standard of, so
- 1:04:12Speaker 12: the fans still want me around, but it's it's, it's
- 1:04:16Speaker 12: been fun to see. And at the end of the day, like,
- 1:04:18Speaker 12: I think for, for the offensive line, obviously it was
- 1:04:21Speaker 12: a question mark, but the reason you're able to do
- 1:04:23Speaker 12: all this stuff is you're winning line of scrimmage and
- 1:04:25Speaker 12: you're establishing a the run and the physicality. I know our,
- 1:04:29Speaker 12: our yards per carrier, just win rate run is a
- 1:04:32Speaker 12: little down from last year, but that was like, you know,
- 1:04:35Speaker 12: one every decade, you're going to have a, a run
- 1:04:38Speaker 12: running game like that. But I just think like the
- 1:04:41Speaker 12: bigs are getting more comfortable, more confident, more nasty, and
- 1:04:45Speaker 12: it allows you to do fun things on offense. Yeah.
- 1:04:50Speaker 4: I got obsessed with, this week, the difference between being
- 1:04:54Speaker 4: there to make a play and actually making the play.
- 1:04:57Speaker 4: Because now through two weeks, and I know it's a
- 1:04:59Speaker 4: small sample size, we're seeing some of that from the
- 1:05:02Speaker 4: defensive ends where they beat their man and then maybe
- 1:05:06Speaker 4: don't actually get the sack or make the tackle. And
- 1:05:08Speaker 4: a pressure, a hurry is wonderful, but obviously the big
- 1:05:11Speaker 4: play comes when you get that guy to the ground.
- 1:05:13Speaker 4: We saw against... against Arkansas, Jackson Benny had an interception.
- 1:05:19Speaker 4: He also had one go right through his hands. You
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: should have had at least four interceptions in that game.
- 1:05:24Speaker 4: And so I'll focus with you on the interception thing
- 1:05:27Speaker 4: because I don't think, and you can correct me if
- 1:05:29Speaker 4: I'm wrong, I don't think that for defensive backs... it's
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: just as simple as getting on a jugs machine. Cause
- 1:05:35Speaker 4: a lot of times you're not catching that ball in
- 1:05:38Speaker 4: a perfect passing scenario. A lot of times it's off
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: a tip or it's a, you know, kind of a
- 1:05:42Speaker 4: crazy thing or you're turning around and the ball's right
- 1:05:45Speaker 4: in your lap, whatever. But, but how do you go
- 1:05:48Speaker 4: from being there to make the play and then actually
- 1:05:51Speaker 4: making the play? How do you practice that? How do
- 1:05:52Speaker 4: you improve that part of your game? If you're, if
- 1:05:55Speaker 4: you're right there, but now you just got to catch
- 1:05:57Speaker 4: the damn thing.
- 1:05:59Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:06:01Speaker 12: Uh, honestly, I think, I think more so than anything you're,
- 1:06:06Speaker 12: how do I put this without making everyone mad? You
- 1:06:10Speaker 12: like a lot of it is you can either catch
- 1:06:12Speaker 12: or you can't like, I mean, some of that is,
- 1:06:14Speaker 12: is you have natural ball skills and you're able to
- 1:06:18Speaker 12: track the ball and really hand eye coordination. But some
- 1:06:21Speaker 12: of it is technique and fundamentals of your leverage and
- 1:06:24Speaker 12: angles of the break. And, and are you wasting steps, uh,
- 1:06:30Speaker 12: on your breaks and the angles getting to the football
- 1:06:33Speaker 12: where that ball is going to be. Like, I don't,
- 1:06:35Speaker 12: it may not make sense to a lot of people,
- 1:06:37Speaker 12: but like if I'm breaking at 45 and I'm taking
- 1:06:40Speaker 12: a half step longer to get out of that break,
- 1:06:42Speaker 12: that means I'm a 10 further away from where I
- 1:06:45Speaker 12: need to be of making that play. So I think
- 1:06:47Speaker 12: it's not so much of, can I catch the ball
- 1:06:51Speaker 12: or not? It's more so like cleaning up the footwork
- 1:06:53Speaker 12: and cleaning up your eyes and angles. So therefore you're,
- 1:06:57Speaker 12: you're getting to the spot quicker and now you're making
- 1:06:59Speaker 12: like a, a routine instinctual catch than trying to make
- 1:07:03Speaker 12: some crazy acrobatic interception.
- 1:07:06Speaker 4: I guess that makes sense. You're talking, you're talking, you're
- 1:07:13Speaker 4: talking to a guy that never made the play. So
- 1:07:15Speaker 4: I really am just like, how do you do it?
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: How do you, how do you make a play?
- 1:07:21Speaker 9: Wow.
- 1:07:22Speaker 4: I don't like how hard you.
- 1:07:24Speaker 6: Did knock a lot of people out.
- 1:07:25Speaker 12: So that's something that I cannot say.
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:07:27Speaker 4: You just got, you just kind of, you got to
- 1:07:29Speaker 4: find your lane eventually in life. Some of us, it
- 1:07:32Speaker 4: takes a little bit longer, Dub.
- 1:07:35Speaker 12: Hey, we found it, though, babe.
- 1:07:37Speaker 9: We found it.
- 1:07:38Speaker 4: How was the Arkansas-Utah experience for Gage? I mean, I
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: guess I could ask him, but, like, that's a pretty
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: unique sort of half-recruiting trip because you're there on a
- 1:07:49Speaker 4: big recruiting weekend, everyone's down on the sideline, a bunch
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: of other, like, guys targets that this team's trying to
- 1:07:55Speaker 4: get to sign, but none of their dads are being
- 1:07:57Speaker 4: enshrined in immortality on the side of the building though.
- 1:08:01Speaker 4: So how was it for gauge?
- 1:08:04Speaker 9: I think it was good.
- 1:08:05Speaker 12: I think he went in with a mindset of like,
- 1:08:08Speaker 12: it's not about me. It's about my dad. And I
- 1:08:12Speaker 12: think he really enjoyed the moment and, and just like
- 1:08:17Speaker 12: being a part of this and seeing the fans and,
- 1:08:21Speaker 12: I mean, the fans show him so much love, and everyone, like,
- 1:08:24Speaker 12: it's very unique for him in going through this, because
- 1:08:29Speaker 12: he is beloved by everyone, and he knows everybody. So
- 1:08:33Speaker 12: I think he just, like, really loved it. He loved
- 1:08:37Speaker 12: getting back with his older sister, who's at BYU, and
- 1:08:40Speaker 12: she was at the game. So they were just hanging out, cheering,
- 1:08:44Speaker 12: and having fun during the game, and then obviously on.
- 1:08:47Speaker 9: The field, and.
- 1:08:49Speaker 12: Really just taking it in as a family. Very rarely
- 1:08:56Speaker 12: do we get uh all six of us together and
- 1:08:58Speaker 12: we were even missing one silver was in italy already
- 1:09:00Speaker 12: so we just try to take advantage of those times
- 1:09:03Speaker 12: that we're together as a family and really uh he
- 1:09:07Speaker 12: just went there more so to support me and and
- 1:09:11Speaker 12: taking that moment and i think he really enjoyed it.
- 1:09:15Speaker 4: Eric Weddle, for another minute or two here on the
- 1:09:17Speaker 4: Sean O'Connell Show. Obviously, it was a busy weekend for you.
- 1:09:21Speaker 4: I imagine you flew back on Sunday, so I don't
- 1:09:23Speaker 4: know if you got to watch any of the NFL weekend.
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: How much did you get to see?
- 1:09:30Speaker 12: Let's see. I saw the night game. I watched the
- 1:09:32Speaker 12: Dallas game. Everything up until that point was highlights. I
- 1:09:38Speaker 12: know pretty much what went on and the upsets and everything.
- 1:09:42Speaker 12: I've done my research, so you can fire away.
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: Well, the game that you watched, I mean, are the
- 1:09:46Speaker 4: Giants legit? A lot of people, I mean, this is
- 1:09:49Speaker 4: New York, number one media market. Everyone is so desperate
- 1:09:53Speaker 4: to see that franchise be relevant again. How significant was
- 1:09:56Speaker 4: that win over the Cowboys?
- 1:09:59Speaker 12: Well, I don't necessarily know if they're legit or not.
- 1:10:02Speaker 12: I'm more, I'm more, what's the word? You could just tell,
- 1:10:10Speaker 12: like you either got it or you don't as a
- 1:10:12Speaker 12: head coach. And I just don't think Schottenheimer is the
- 1:10:14Speaker 12: guy to lead that team. Like to look at all
- 1:10:17Speaker 12: the penalties, look at the, the unfortunate play on the
- 1:10:21Speaker 12: offense defense. It comes back to culture and vision. And
- 1:10:24Speaker 12: you look at Harbs and they're just like tough. They're physical.
- 1:10:27Speaker 12: They run the football, play great defense. Like that's just
- 1:10:30Speaker 12: who they are. And that's instilled. So I don't know,
- 1:10:33Speaker 12: like you, you spend all this money on fixing the defense.
- 1:10:35Speaker 12: There was a worst defense in league last year. and
- 1:10:37Speaker 12: couldn't stop a run. And then they, they give up
- 1:10:39Speaker 12: almost 200 yards rushing. Like you're never going to be
- 1:10:41Speaker 12: taken serious. If you can't run the football, you can't
- 1:10:44Speaker 12: stop the run. I mean, it's at any level. So
- 1:10:47Speaker 12: I was, I was more like shocked that Dallas thought
- 1:10:52Speaker 12: of rookie DC with those players and scheme, like was
- 1:10:56Speaker 12: going to be good. And it obviously wasn't. So they
- 1:10:59Speaker 12: got a, they got a lot to figure out. I
- 1:11:01Speaker 12: think that the giants at this point are probably a
- 1:11:04Speaker 12: 500 team, maybe nine wins. in that division and whatnot.
- 1:11:09Speaker 12: But that was, that was more of what stood out
- 1:11:12Speaker 12: to me. And obviously, I don't know what we talked about.
- 1:11:14Speaker 12: I got, I got to give a shout out to
- 1:11:16Speaker 12: the Niners from whooping the Rams, but really a healthy,
- 1:11:22Speaker 12: a healthy Niners team with all those dudes are a real,
- 1:11:27Speaker 12: real problem for everybody. So it's gotta be exciting for
- 1:11:31Speaker 12: the Niners fans. I think the Rams will be fine,
- 1:11:34Speaker 12: but I was more impressed with that. how the Rams
- 1:11:38Speaker 12: defense and most importantly, the D coordinator didn't really adjust
- 1:11:44Speaker 12: to the, the quick game, the flats, the spring game.
- 1:11:46Speaker 12: And the first series you knew, like how you take,
- 1:11:49Speaker 12: how you play well against the Niners, make pretty throw
- 1:11:52Speaker 12: outside the numbers and, and get after them, not just
- 1:11:56Speaker 12: sit back and two shell and let them, think and
- 1:11:58Speaker 12: dunk all his way down the field.
- 1:12:01Speaker 4: Any other thoughts on Niners-Rams? It just feels good for
- 1:12:04Speaker 4: me to hear you give the Niners credit over the Rams.
- 1:12:07Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 1:12:10Speaker 12: Hey, Warner, Greenlaw, and Bosa, I could watch that defense
- 1:12:14Speaker 12: play all day long.
- 1:12:16Speaker 9: Yikes.
- 1:12:17Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:12:18Speaker 4: I'm knocking on wood because obviously they all need to
- 1:12:20Speaker 4: stay healthy because all of them are paid so well
- 1:12:22Speaker 4: that there's zero depth behind any of these starters. But
- 1:12:26Speaker 4: for now, I'll just take the depth.
- 1:12:29Speaker 6: Yes.
- 1:12:32Speaker 4: We might have got disconnected, but that's all right. We
- 1:12:35Speaker 4: got 25 good minutes from our guy, Eric Weddle in Italy.
- 1:12:40Speaker 4: He's supporting his daughter in her acrobatics competition. He was
- 1:12:44Speaker 4: obviously in the building last weekend for Arkansas versus Utah.
- 1:12:49Speaker 4: And the only thing I had left to ask him. Okay.
- 1:12:53Speaker 3: You're backed up.
- 1:12:55Speaker 12: I'm back.
- 1:12:55Speaker 9: Okay.
- 1:12:57Speaker 4: Your thoughts on Detroit versus Buffalo.
- 1:13:01Speaker 12: Yeah, I think, I think it's going to be a
- 1:13:05Speaker 12: high scoring affair. I didn't, man, I didn't think Buffalo
- 1:13:08Speaker 12: was going to put 36 on Houston. Holy smokes.
- 1:13:11Speaker 4: He was supposed to be something this year. We'll, I
- 1:13:13Speaker 4: guess we'll find out.
- 1:13:16Speaker 12: I guess we will. I think, you know, the first week,
- 1:13:19Speaker 12: the first week you never take too much stock into it,
- 1:13:22Speaker 12: whether it's good or bad. So, you kind of just
- 1:13:25Speaker 12: take what it is and see over the course of
- 1:13:28Speaker 12: four to six games. Then you kind of identify who's
- 1:13:31Speaker 12: real and who's not. But I think it's going to
- 1:13:32Speaker 12: be an exciting game. Weapons all over the place. Great offenses.
- 1:13:38Speaker 12: Where is it? It's in Buffalo, correct?
- 1:13:40Speaker 6: Yes.
- 1:13:40Speaker 4: The brand new stadium. First game there.
- 1:13:44Speaker 12: Yeah, I'm taking Buffalo all day.
- 1:13:47Speaker 4: Last thing before I let you go, it's a very
- 1:13:49Speaker 4: small sample size. It's the question of the day on
- 1:13:52Speaker 4: the show, based on what we have seen so far
- 1:13:54Speaker 4: is this year's Utah team better than last year's team.
- 1:13:58Speaker 4: Maybe not quite as good, or are they same, same?
- 1:14:04Speaker 12: Speaker 4, I think their ceiling is higher at this point,
- 1:14:11Speaker 12: the potential to be better to go 11 ones last year.
- 1:14:15Speaker 12: They went 11, two, 11, three. What'd they go?
- 1:14:17Speaker 4: 11 and two after the, after the ball game, 11
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: and two.
- 1:14:23Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 1:14:25Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:14:25Speaker 12: So I mean, I've, I've already been on record saying
- 1:14:29Speaker 12: that this is going to be a special year. So
- 1:14:32Speaker 12: I'm going to, I'm going to say we'll be a better.
- 1:14:36Speaker 3: We'll take it.
- 1:14:37Speaker 4: We'll take it. That's the official response from Eric Weddle
- 1:14:41Speaker 4: on the Twitter poll. You can go vote at Real
- 1:14:43Speaker 4: OC Sports. Say hi to the family for us. Enjoy Italy.
- 1:14:48Speaker 4: Have some more pizza. We'll chat next week, all right?
- 1:14:51Speaker 9: You know it, bro.
- 1:14:52Speaker 12: Love you guys.
- 1:14:53Speaker 4: Love you, dude. Safe travels. Eric Weddle in Italy. Utah
- 1:14:59Speaker 4: football legend and I think future NFL Hall of Famer.
- 1:15:02Speaker 4: He's got the Super Bowl championship and a great resume
- 1:15:04Speaker 4: to go with it. more responses on the, the poll.
- 1:15:11Speaker 4: If damp here is healthy, then way better than last year.
- 1:15:14Speaker 4: I don't know how you be way better. Cause like
- 1:15:17Speaker 4: Eric just said, this is a, an 11 win team
- 1:15:20Speaker 4: from a season ago. Ryan on the Twitter says it
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: has a chance to be a better team this year,
- 1:15:26Speaker 4: still early on. And that's why I'm asking the question
- 1:15:29Speaker 4: because we're going to do it again. Halfway through the year.
- 1:15:31Speaker 4: Is this team better? And maybe on Saturday, Utah State
- 1:15:36Speaker 4: could give you a stiff test and maybe your confidence
- 1:15:38Speaker 4: starts to shake.
- 1:15:40Speaker 3: 1853 says, if we're.
- 1:15:41Speaker 4: Up 3-0 at half this Saturday, I'd say we're the
- 1:15:44Speaker 4: same as last year. Last year it was UCLA, Cal Poly,
- 1:15:50Speaker 4: and then what, Wyoming for your preseason schedule? It's very
- 1:15:55Speaker 4: similar to what you're getting this year. So not apples
- 1:15:59Speaker 4: to apples exactly, but it's like apples to pears.
- 1:16:02Speaker 3: Or something?
- 1:16:05Speaker 4: Don't forget, Culligan Water, Salt Lake City, offering special discounts

- 1:17:08Speaker 4: in studio with us today. Colson and Kent have been
- 1:17:11Speaker 4: giving us some information on why we should be improving
- 1:17:15Speaker 4: the water in our home through Culligan Salt Lake City.
- 1:17:18Speaker 4: It's not just soft water. It's not just one or
- 1:17:22Speaker 4: the other. Oh, I need some filtration on my sink.
- 1:17:25Speaker 4: You can do the whole home. Softened water, filtered water,
- 1:17:31Speaker 4: better water. for your appliances, for your family, for everyone.
- 1:17:34Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:17:35Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:17:35Speaker 3: Chlorine removal, the whole thing.
- 1:17:37Speaker 8: You know, if you see spots on your dishes or
- 1:17:39Speaker 8: you're seeing scaling around your fixtures, your shower heads, that
- 1:17:43Speaker 8: type of thing, give us a call.
- 1:17:44Speaker 3: There's a better solution.
- 1:17:45Speaker 8: You don't have to sit there and scrub with lime
- 1:17:48Speaker 8: away for hours and hours on end. We'll treat the
- 1:17:51Speaker 8: problem at the source. We'll give you better water. We'll
- 1:17:54Speaker 8: give you filtered water. We can give you purified water.
- 1:17:56Speaker 8: So you don't have to worry about pharmaceutical waste and
- 1:17:59Speaker 8: microplastics and some of these like nasty emerging contaminants that
- 1:18:03Speaker 8: you're starting to hear about in the media. You can
- 1:18:05Speaker 8: know that there's peace of mind for you, for your family,
- 1:18:08Speaker 8: for your loved ones.
- 1:18:09Speaker 3: And it's convenient.
- 1:18:09Speaker 8: You get bottled water, quality water from a fixture in
- 1:18:13Speaker 8: your home, right? Stop spending $ 4 for a bottle of
- 1:18:16Speaker 8: water at the gas station.
- 1:18:18Speaker 3: Oh, see, like stop doing it.
- 1:18:19Speaker 4: It drives me insane. It's actually one thing that your boy,
- 1:18:22Speaker 4: I'm cheap. You guys know this about me. I won't
- 1:18:25Speaker 4: do it. I won't do it. And then, you know,
- 1:18:27Speaker 4: there are other people in the household that do. And
- 1:18:29Speaker 4: you're just like, stop. Don't do that anymore.
- 1:18:31Speaker 8: Some people want pH-adjusted water, high pH water, alkaline water.
- 1:18:35Speaker 3: We can do it all.
- 1:18:36Speaker 8: We can customize these solutions for whatever feels right for you,
- 1:18:39Speaker 8: for your family, for your taste preferences. but give us
- 1:18:42Speaker 8: a call. It all starts with a water test. We
- 1:18:44Speaker 8: come out, we get a baseline, right? That's the difference
- 1:18:46Speaker 8: between Culligan and some of our competitors. Like we actually
- 1:18:48Speaker 8: care about Utahns and Utah water. And we've been here
- 1:18:51Speaker 8: for 90 years. Like this isn't like a fly by
- 1:18:54Speaker 8: night plumbing shop, like selling water softeners. Like we've put
- 1:18:57Speaker 8: the time, we've put the R and D in, we
- 1:18:59Speaker 8: have the technology, we have the experience, we have the
- 1:19:02Speaker 8: service techs to come out and really support you and
- 1:19:05Speaker 8: whatever you, your unique water problem is.
- 1:19:08Speaker 4: And it's a whole new set of listeners now since
- 1:19:10Speaker 4: we last talked about this, most likely, because now I
- 1:19:13Speaker 4: understand there's always a barrier to entry on stuff like this.
- 1:19:16Speaker 4: I don't want a big upfront cost. I don't know
- 1:19:18Speaker 4: if it's going to be worth it, even after that
- 1:19:20Speaker 4: home water test. Even if I find this, like, oh,
- 1:19:22Speaker 4: my water's harder than it needs to be. I don't
- 1:19:24Speaker 4: have the money right now to drop $ 400, $ 500, $ 1, 000,
- 1:19:27Speaker 4: whatever it's going to be. You've got an option without
- 1:19:31Speaker 4: those upfront expenses with this subscription model that's happening right
- 1:19:34Speaker 4: now and the special offer through ESPN 700. Kent, tell
- 1:19:37Speaker 4: us more about it.
- 1:19:38Speaker 11: Yeah, call us at 801-509-9602. Mention the Sean O'Connell Show,
- 1:19:44Speaker 11: and we can get you this whole home system for
- 1:19:46Speaker 11: as little as a dollar a day. We become your
- 1:19:49Speaker 11: partner in water treatment. We're not looking for a sale.
- 1:19:52Speaker 11: We're looking for a partnership. We want to be able
- 1:19:55Speaker 11: to treat your water as it changes, as your home changes,
- 1:19:58Speaker 11: as your family changes. This will provide you with everything.
- 1:20:02Speaker 11: It gives you the equipment. It gives you the service.
- 1:20:05Speaker 11: It gives you the installation. It gives you the labor,
- 1:20:08Speaker 11: salt delivery, all of those things. So it takes all
- 1:20:12Speaker 11: of your work out of it and your guessing to
- 1:20:14Speaker 11: know if the equipment is running and operating properly. We
- 1:20:18Speaker 11: are now partners with you in your water that's coming
- 1:20:22Speaker 11: into your home.
- 1:20:22Speaker 7: But give us a call, 801-509-9602, and mention ESPN 700.
- 1:20:23Speaker 7: $ 30 a month.
- 1:20:24Speaker 9: $ 30 a month.
- 1:20:31Speaker 4: You're paying probably now that you've, we, all of us
- 1:20:33Speaker 4: have cut the cord and then during football season, you gotta,
- 1:20:38Speaker 4: you gotta repair the cord, right?
- 1:20:39Speaker 3: Cause I got crap. I gotta get it back.
- 1:20:40Speaker 12: Right.
- 1:20:41Speaker 4: But all of us have found that, Oh, I got
- 1:20:44Speaker 4: rid of cable. And then I got all these different
- 1:20:46Speaker 4: streaming services that now are three times as expensive as cable.
- 1:20:49Speaker 4: And you got the subscription services for your iTunes and
- 1:20:52Speaker 4: everything else. All of that spending is for your entertainment.
- 1:20:56Speaker 4: This is for your health. This is for longevity, for
- 1:20:59Speaker 4: your body and for your home and the appliances in
- 1:21:02Speaker 4: your home. It's a worthy spend for sure.
- 1:21:04Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 1:21:05Speaker 8: And there's not a lot of products that can benefit
- 1:21:07Speaker 8: both your health and your home's health, but a water
- 1:21:11Speaker 8: softener and drinking water solution can do both of those things.
- 1:21:14Speaker 8: Like you said, it protects all your investment, all your appliances.
- 1:21:17Speaker 8: Plus it improves like all the water using, you know,
- 1:21:20Speaker 8: things in your life. Like, I don't know, drinking water,
- 1:21:22Speaker 8: ice cubes. cooking, filtered water, bottled water, all that kind
- 1:21:27Speaker 8: of stuff. So 801-509-9602 for your home. If you've got

- 1:21:37Speaker 8: If you've got an apartment complex as a tenant or
- 1:21:39Speaker 8: you're the guy who owns it or the gal who
- 1:21:41Speaker 8: owns it and you're renting to everyone else, 801-509-9602.
- 1:21:44Speaker 4: See what Culligan can do for you. CulliganSLC.com. Thanks, fellas.
- 1:21:49Speaker 9: Thanks.
- 1:21:50Speaker 4: All righty. Here in the Daily Dump. Valley plumbing, heating,
- 1:21:53Speaker 4: and cooling hooking you up with the daily dump every
- 1:21:56Speaker 4: single day.
- 1:21:57Speaker 3: How about this?
- 1:21:59Speaker 4: A new look us men's national team for the upcoming
- 1:22:02Speaker 4: FIFA international window. A few friendlies coming up late September.
- 1:22:09Speaker 4: First of all, gozo. Gozo, we were happy for you. Gozo,
- 1:22:14Speaker 4: you're the man. We wish you were still with RSL. Gozo,
- 1:22:17Speaker 4: Xavier Gozo, now with Crystal Palace, got called up to U.S.
- 1:22:21Speaker 4: Men's National Team duty for this. Christian Pulisic has been
- 1:22:25Speaker 4: left off the roster for now. And this Kevin Sullivan kid,
- 1:22:34Speaker 4: who is supposed to be the next big thing in
- 1:22:36Speaker 4: American soccer, 16 years old, makes the U.S. men's national
- 1:22:41Speaker 4: team international roster for the very first time. The great
- 1:22:46Speaker 4: white hope for American soccer lies in the hands of
- 1:22:50Speaker 4: a 16-year-old. I don't know if I feel real good
- 1:22:52Speaker 4: about that, but the U.S. men's national team, which will
- 1:22:57Speaker 4: certainly look different by the time the next World Cup
- 1:22:59Speaker 4: rolls around, starting to tweak the roster just a little bit.
- 1:23:02Speaker 4: And one of those tweaks is, for this window, Christian
- 1:23:05Speaker 4: Pulisic has been left off. We referenced this when Eric
- 1:23:11Speaker 4: Woodyer joined us on the show a little bit earlier.
- 1:23:14Speaker 4: The FBS Oversight Committee, you know, the rules regulators, the
- 1:23:22Speaker 4: authority of college football that may or may not actually
- 1:23:25Speaker 4: have any power to do anything. The Oversight Committee has
- 1:23:29Speaker 4: released an official statement that Replay protocol was not applied
- 1:23:34Speaker 4: correctly at the end of the Western Michigan-Michigan game, and
- 1:23:37Speaker 4: they have said Western Michigan should have won the game.
- 1:23:43Speaker 4: They also said, but we didn't do it right, so
- 1:23:46Speaker 4: they didn't.
- 1:23:47Speaker 3: Win the game.
- 1:23:50Speaker 4: If I'm a Western Michigan alum, if I'm a Western
- 1:23:52Speaker 4: Michigan fan, if I'm a Western Michigan anything, this almost
- 1:23:56Speaker 4: upsets me more because they're confirming something that I already knew.
- 1:24:00Speaker 4: They are giving me an official statement that letting me
- 1:24:04Speaker 4: know that this grave sense of injustice that I am
- 1:24:06Speaker 4: waking up with every day is fully deserved. But they're
- 1:24:13Speaker 4: also saying we're not going to do anything about it.
- 1:24:16Speaker 4: This is like your dog goes missing. You know, it
- 1:24:20Speaker 4: was your neighbor.
- 1:24:21Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:24:22Speaker 4: You know, is that weird guy with the washing machines
- 1:24:25Speaker 4: outside of his house? And he's got like a bunch
- 1:24:28Speaker 4: of strange crap in the backyard. I know that guy
- 1:24:31Speaker 4: did something to my dog. My dog is gone. And
- 1:24:34Speaker 4: I know it was him.
- 1:24:35Speaker 3: The clopex. You knew it. What's the clopex? Did you
- 1:24:38Speaker 3: ever see the burbs?
- 1:24:39Speaker 12: No.
- 1:24:40Speaker 4: Tom Hanks?
- 1:24:40Speaker 3: No.
- 1:24:41Speaker 12: Ah.
- 1:24:42Speaker 4: What's up with the Clopax? Is that like a family
- 1:24:44Speaker 4: in that show?
- 1:24:45Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: They are the family you're describing, except everyone thinks they're murderers.
- 1:24:50Speaker 4: We all grew up around, like, there's something off about
- 1:24:53Speaker 4: that house. And I know they're the ones. They're the
- 1:24:57Speaker 4: reason my dog is missing. And then you find out
- 1:25:00Speaker 4: a couple weeks later, like, oh, yeah, for sure, that
- 1:25:02Speaker 4: guy kidnapped your dog. But you can't get the dog back.
- 1:25:05Speaker 4: The cops are like, yep, he's got your dog. Statute
- 1:25:08Speaker 4: of limitations has passed. It's a common law ownership now. Wait,
- 1:25:13Speaker 4: so there's no resolution to my problem? You're just acknowledging...
- 1:25:17Speaker 4: That I was right all along?
- 1:25:19Speaker 9: Yes.
- 1:25:19Speaker 4: That's what we're doing.
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: It's the end of the two-minute reports for the NBA
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: that they have now, the officiating reports. It's like, oh, yeah,
- 1:25:27Speaker 2: we admit that we screwed this really big call-up with
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: a minute left in the game.
- 1:25:31Speaker 4: I appreciate transparency. Here's what I want instead, okay? At
- 1:25:38Speaker 4: the end of the NBA season... Give me like a
- 1:25:41Speaker 4: full report of all the errors you found in officiating
- 1:25:44Speaker 4: and give the officials a report card based on that.
- 1:25:48Speaker 4: And they're either allowed to come back or they're not.
- 1:25:50Speaker 4: They're either promoted or they're relegated. I don't want to
- 1:25:53Speaker 4: hear at the end of every single hockey game, football game,
- 1:25:56Speaker 4: baseball game. Well, now in baseball, you get it in
- 1:25:58Speaker 4: real time with the strikes and balls and things like that.
- 1:26:03Speaker 4: I don't want that. to be something after every single game.
- 1:26:08Speaker 4: It annoys me where.
- 1:26:09Speaker 3: You're like, yeah, I know.
- 1:26:10Speaker 4: I know you got that call wrong, but you're not
- 1:26:12Speaker 4: changing the result. Western Michigan. I've, I feel sorry for you.
- 1:26:19Speaker 4: I still, to this day, when I've let myself think
- 1:26:21Speaker 4: about it, I cannot imagine like what if Boise state
- 1:26:29Speaker 4: against Oklahoma is They deem that the Statue of Liberty play,
- 1:26:33Speaker 4: the iconic touchdown for Boise State, has to come back
- 1:26:37Speaker 4: on some phantom call. And then, two weeks later, they're
- 1:26:42Speaker 4: just like, oh, actually, you know what? That touchdown should
- 1:26:45Speaker 4: not have been overturned. Boise State should have won that game.
- 1:26:47Speaker 4: They didn't, but they should have. Imagine if the punt
- 1:26:53Speaker 4: block touchdown for Appalachian State, the big house, big upset.
- 1:26:59Speaker 4: They were like, oh, you know what? He was offside,
- 1:27:01Speaker 4: so that thing comes back. And then two weeks later,
- 1:27:03Speaker 4: they're just like, actually, that didn't happen. Imagine if you
- 1:27:07Speaker 4: took away some of those great moments that have formed
- 1:27:12Speaker 4: the underdog belief in college football. You took them away,
- 1:27:17Speaker 4: and then you tried to be like, oh, but guess what?
- 1:27:19Speaker 3: We were wrong.
- 1:27:20Speaker 4: It changes everything for Boise State. It changes everything for
- 1:27:23Speaker 4: Appalachian State. Utah doesn't really have, like when we overachieved...
- 1:27:28Speaker 4: As a, as a community, as a football program in
- 1:27:31Speaker 4: that undefeated Fiesta bowl season, there wasn't.
- 1:27:33Speaker 3: Like a one play kind of a thing.
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: None of the games were close and you can say this, say,
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: I mean, there were closer games in 08, but as
- 1:27:39Speaker 2: far as the big nationally relevant game, the equivalent of
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: what you're talking about, the, the upset went over Alabama
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: and the sugar bowl.
- 1:27:47Speaker 3: There's also a blowout win. So, right.
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: I mean, maybe you could say, imagine if two of
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: those touchdowns were overturned because of something dumb, the TCU
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: game that.
- 1:27:54Speaker 4: Year was the really close. Like that was the kind
- 1:27:56Speaker 4: of the defining moment game. Imagine, if instead of you
- 1:28:00Speaker 4: finishing the season undefeated and getting to go play the
- 1:28:03Speaker 4: sugar bowl against Alabama, some phantom call, some phantom replay
- 1:28:07Speaker 4: issue means you lose to TCU 13 to 10. And
- 1:28:11Speaker 4: then your whole season is different. And then TCU beats Alabama.
- 1:28:15Speaker 4: And you're looking like that should have been us.
- 1:28:17Speaker 12: Exactly.
- 1:28:18Speaker 4: And then the oversight committee comes out and is just like,
- 1:28:21Speaker 4: you know what? It turns out you actually did win
- 1:28:23Speaker 4: and you should be undefeated. I would never get over this.
- 1:28:27Speaker 4: I know I've talked about it. I've said this exact
- 1:28:29Speaker 4: thing on air many times. Stop discussing it publicly because
- 1:28:35Speaker 4: it's making me mad every single time. Alright, I'm done.
- 1:28:40Speaker 3: Interesting.
- 1:28:40Speaker 4: Utah mammoth begin camp today. They're in practice today. We
- 1:28:45Speaker 4: had Jack McBain on the show yesterday. It was a
- 1:28:47Speaker 4: great conversation with Jack McBain. Uh, you can find that
- 1:28:50Speaker 4: on ESPN, 700 sports.com or on the ESPN 700 app,
- 1:28:55Speaker 4: Connor Hellebook.
- 1:28:56Speaker 3: Team USA goalie, right?
- 1:28:58Speaker 4: A guy who at his very best is among the
- 1:29:02Speaker 4: best goalies in the NHL. He's been suspended by the
- 1:29:06Speaker 4: Winnipeg jets because he failed to report to training camp.
- 1:29:11Speaker 4: So they tried to kind of work this thing out
- 1:29:14Speaker 4: in a classy way for a couple of years where
- 1:29:17Speaker 4: he was like, I want to trade. It wasn't a
- 1:29:20Speaker 4: couple of years for several months.
- 1:29:23Speaker 3: I want to trade.
- 1:29:23Speaker 4: I'm going to tell you, I want to trade. I'm
- 1:29:25Speaker 4: not going to make a stink about.
- 1:29:26Speaker 3: It in the media.
- 1:29:27Speaker 4: And then they started reporting on it. And then he
- 1:29:30Speaker 4: came out eventually said, yes, we were trying to handle
- 1:29:32Speaker 4: this in house, but I do want to be moved
- 1:29:35Speaker 4: on from the Winnipeg jets. I would like to have
- 1:29:38Speaker 4: an opportunity elsewhere. I'm grateful for my time here, but
- 1:29:42Speaker 4: you know, the relationship is over. We're done. And he's
- 1:29:46Speaker 4: on the market. And you heard about, you know, the
- 1:29:48Speaker 4: Buffalo Sabres being a likely destination, the mammoth, kind of
- 1:29:52Speaker 4: working their way into that conversation. Now the divorce is ugly.
- 1:29:56Speaker 4: Connor Hellebuck didn't show up for training camp. And what
- 1:29:59Speaker 4: that does for everybody in the NHL is it drives
- 1:30:02Speaker 4: his price down drastically. He is now a suspended. I'm
- 1:30:06Speaker 4: not going to show up. I'm not helping you in
- 1:30:08Speaker 4: hockey games type player.
- 1:30:10Speaker 3: He is an offload.
- 1:30:11Speaker 4: He is a guy that no law. I mean, and
- 1:30:14Speaker 4: the mammoth are in the conversation because they're just seeing
- 1:30:17Speaker 4: what the price is going to be. A lot of
- 1:30:19Speaker 4: these NHL podcasts, a lot of these NHL radio shows
- 1:30:22Speaker 4: are like, Hey, the Utah mammoth have a boatload of prospects.
- 1:30:26Speaker 4: They could very easily go acquire a Connor Hellebook.
- 1:30:29Speaker 3: And absolutely.
- 1:30:30Speaker 4: If that's what bill Armstrong wanted to do, it already
- 1:30:33Speaker 4: would have been done. If he wanted to pay the
- 1:30:35Speaker 4: hefty price for a Connor Hellebook level guy, he could have,
- 1:30:40Speaker 4: because they do have those assets in the pipeline, but
- 1:30:43Speaker 4: the Utah mammoth have a plan for those assets. And
- 1:30:47Speaker 4: it's not to offload them, to develop them a little
- 1:30:49Speaker 4: bit and send them somewhere else.
- 1:30:51Speaker 3: They want these.
- 1:30:51Speaker 4: Guys to be part of a Stanley Cup contending core
- 1:30:55Speaker 4: sooner than later. And of course, there's always trade-offs to happen.
- 1:31:01Speaker 4: First of all, they really like Veggie. We talked about
- 1:31:04Speaker 4: it earlier on the show. Veggie's numbers and Hellebuck's numbers
- 1:31:07Speaker 4: from last year were so similar that you can't really
- 1:31:11Speaker 4: say that one is an obvious upgrade over the other.
- 1:31:14Speaker 4: It's not normal in the NHL to have a two
- 1:31:17Speaker 4: goalie system. You got to have your main guy and
- 1:31:20Speaker 4: your backup guy. Now you need more of a backup
- 1:31:22Speaker 4: than they had last year, but they also like Cosa,
- 1:31:26Speaker 4: the newly acquired backup for this Utah mammoth roster right now.
- 1:31:30Speaker 4: So hella buck they're hanging around in this conversation because
- 1:31:34Speaker 4: if the price gets driven low enough, you got to
- 1:31:36Speaker 4: pull the trigger, but that price is going to, I
- 1:31:38Speaker 4: think have to go pretty low. Otherwise the mammoth already
- 1:31:41Speaker 4: would have paid something. They already would have offered the trade.
- 1:31:44Speaker 4: They already, cause they, it's not a lack of assets.
- 1:31:47Speaker 4: There are some teams out there that want Connor Hellebuck.
- 1:31:49Speaker 4: They don't have enough to get him from the jets
- 1:31:52Speaker 4: or they didn't. Now they probably do because the failure
- 1:31:56Speaker 4: to report and the suspension means that his price is
- 1:31:58Speaker 4: falling through the floor as we speak. So the mammoth
- 1:32:01Speaker 4: hanging around here, I don't think they want to make
- 1:32:04Speaker 4: a move, but he's a good enough player. He's a
- 1:32:07Speaker 4: good enough goalie that if the price drops low enough, then,
- 1:32:12Speaker 4: You make the trade.
- 1:32:13Speaker 2: Well, you take the flyer that maybe last year, at
- 1:32:17Speaker 2: least in the Olympics, he was not underperforming. He was
- 1:32:21Speaker 2: incredible in the Olympics. But as far as NHL regular season,
- 1:32:27Speaker 2: you take a flyer on maybe that was just a
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: down year if you don't have to sell the farm
- 1:32:31Speaker 2: for him.
- 1:32:31Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: Because you can say that Veggie's numbers, Veggie's and his
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: numbers were basically the same. But long-term, it's clear that
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: Connor Hellebuck's a better goalie, and you are going to
- 1:32:44Speaker 2: bet on that upside if you're the Mammoth, if you
- 1:32:48Speaker 2: don't have to completely empty your cupboard to get a
- 1:32:50Speaker 2: guy like that, absolutely. So this would be fascinating to
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: watch to see if it drops low enough for the
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: Mammoth to be able to make that kind of a trade.
- 1:32:58Speaker 4: Also, Connor Hellebuck has, and I don't know if the
- 1:33:04Speaker 4: suspension and the failure to report, he has a no-trade clause.
- 1:33:08Speaker 4: with all, but like eight franchises, I think in the NHL,
- 1:33:13Speaker 4: Winnipeg's not allowed to trade him unless he signs off
- 1:33:17Speaker 4: on it. Clearly he's going to sign off on whatever trade,
- 1:33:19Speaker 4: but Utah is one of the places that he would
- 1:33:22Speaker 4: sign off for a trade. There are some other teams
- 1:33:25Speaker 4: that might be interested in him where he could potentially
- 1:33:27Speaker 4: be like, nah, man, I'm not going there. I don't
- 1:33:30Speaker 4: know how much that changes because of the suspension, but
- 1:33:33Speaker 4: interesting stuff, fascinating stuff. And we are two weeks from today.
- 1:33:38Speaker 4: That's when puck drops on the NHL regular season. Chicago
- 1:33:41Speaker 4: Blackhawks at the Delta Center at the newly constructed, like fresh,
- 1:33:46Speaker 4: like brand new car smell interior, at least of the
- 1:33:49Speaker 4: Delta Center.
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: All but one section of the upper bowl completed. So
- 1:33:55Speaker 2: you still have one part of the upper bowl obstructed
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: view seats for this year, but you're like three quarters
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: of the way through this, this complete renovation.
- 1:34:05Speaker 3: So it, it should look pretty sweet. this season.
- 1:34:08Speaker 2: And for most of the upper bowl, you're not going
- 1:34:10Speaker 2: to have to deal with those obstructed view seats, which is,
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: which is really awesome for the first time, by the way,
- 1:34:15Speaker 2: you mentioned two weeks away from puck dropping a regular season,
- 1:34:18Speaker 2: which means we're going to have between the pipes coming
- 1:34:21Speaker 2: back here soon with Adrian Denny in the next couple
- 1:34:23Speaker 2: of weeks as well here on the Sean O'Connell show.
- 1:34:26Speaker 4: Keller Schmaltz, Daniil boot top line at practice today, Kraus, Trocek, Yamamoto, McBain, Hayton, Tanev, Lee, Cooley, Gunther,
- 1:34:38Speaker 4: Those were the top lines, but these are practice lines
- 1:34:41Speaker 4: and bear famously likes to mix and match and do
- 1:34:43Speaker 4: these things. It's day one of training camp, Utah mammoth,
- 1:34:47Speaker 4: right around the corner, Utah football playing this weekend, jazz basketball,
- 1:34:51Speaker 4: before you know it running youths basketball, before you know it,
- 1:34:54Speaker 4: it does not get better than sports in the fall.
- 1:34:58Speaker 4: Holy cow. That is your daily dump brought to you
- 1:35:02Speaker 4: by Valley plumbing, heating, and cooling. We got another injury report.
- 1:35:08Speaker 3: Not another.
- 1:35:08Speaker 4: We have an injury report to give you because there
- 1:35:11Speaker 4: is a Big 12 football game being played tomorrow night
- 1:35:14Speaker 4: between Houston and Texas Tech. This one's going to be informative.
- 1:35:19Speaker 4: We'll give you the injury report next. It's the Sean
- 1:35:21Speaker 4: O'Connell Show on ESPN 700, 92.1 FM. You're listening to
- 1:35:27Speaker 4: the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch Hyundai Studio of
- 1:35:31Speaker 4: ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM. Quick injury report for a
- 1:35:38Speaker 4: Friday night game. Remember, these things come out a couple
- 1:35:41Speaker 4: days ahead of time. When their official Big 12 games,
- 1:35:46Speaker 4: Houston versus Texas Tech tomorrow night, one of the big
- 1:35:49Speaker 4: matchups in the early part of the season, obviously Arizona-BYU
- 1:35:54Speaker 4: happened last weekend, and now Houston-Texas Tech as we try
- 1:35:57Speaker 4: to figure out What both of those teams are should
- 1:36:00Speaker 4: be a really good game. Injury update brought to you
- 1:36:02Speaker 4: by Advocates Injury Attorneys. If you've been injured in an accident,
- 1:36:05Speaker 4: any kind of accident, auto accident, scooter accident, biking accident,
- 1:36:10Speaker 4: slip and fall accident, maybe you don't know if you
- 1:36:12Speaker 4: have a case or not. That's what the advocates are
- 1:36:14Speaker 4: here for. 801-355-5550 or utahadvocates.com. You deserve an advocate. No
- 1:36:22Speaker 4: injury report for Utah versus Utah State because it's not
- 1:36:25Speaker 4: a Colorado. It's not a, excuse me, it's not a
- 1:36:26Speaker 4: Big 12 game. Colorado State, BYU, same thing. Texas Tech, Houston. Out,
- 1:36:33Speaker 4: Texas Tech has Michael Harrison, Pilot, Oliver Miles, Ashton Hampton,
- 1:36:38Speaker 4: Amir Boyd, Elias Gillen. Those guys all out. Houston, missing
- 1:36:45Speaker 4: a wide receiver. Defensive back, Mudasir Abdullah. Linebacker Bryson Castile,
- 1:36:53Speaker 4: Jeff Strozer, Jr. And defensive lineman, Quinn Dario Lee questionable
- 1:36:58Speaker 4: for the Houston Cougars, Stefan Johnson and miles rouser for
- 1:37:03Speaker 4: Texas tech, Trey white, Terrence Carter, Jr. And Brendan Jordan,
- 1:37:09Speaker 4: Terrence Carter, Jr. And Trey white are both big time
- 1:37:12Speaker 4: players for Texas tech. Trey white came to them. from
- 1:37:16Speaker 4: San Diego state last year, I believe, and was one
- 1:37:19Speaker 4: of the top guys in the transfer portal. So whether
- 1:37:22Speaker 4: or not he will play is going to end up
- 1:37:23Speaker 4: being a big deal for Texas tech. That injury report
- 1:37:26Speaker 4: is brought to you by our friends over at the advocates,

- 1:37:50Speaker 4: your individual health obviously matters. Uh, the, the fact that
- 1:37:55Speaker 4: you can extend the life of kind of everything in
- 1:37:58Speaker 4: your home, especially in a market where, you know, people
- 1:38:00Speaker 4: are not selling their houses anymore. We're all We're all
- 1:38:04Speaker 4: locked down in these 2%, 2.5% handcuffs on our mortgages,
- 1:38:08Speaker 4: which means you need to get more life out of
- 1:38:09Speaker 4: your home. Better water can do that.
- 1:38:11Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:38:12Speaker 8: And having a system, you know, maintenance and labor costs
- 1:38:16Speaker 8: are going through the roofs. It would be really nice
- 1:38:19Speaker 8: to have a subscription where you don't have to worry
- 1:38:21Speaker 8: about labor. You don't have to worry about maintenance. You
- 1:38:23Speaker 8: don't have to worry about filter change. You don't have
- 1:38:25Speaker 8: to worry about the price of this thing jumping 30%, 40%,
- 1:38:27Speaker 8: 50% every year. Lock in a Kolegan solution and you
- 1:38:33Speaker 8: don't have any other headaches. We'll take care of all
- 1:38:36Speaker 8: of your water filtration problems for a low monthly rate
- 1:38:39Speaker 8: with no upfront costs, no crazy financing where you know,
- 1:38:43Speaker 8: you have eight, 9% for a couple of months, then
- 1:38:46Speaker 8: it jumps to 17% after the 13th month. Like this
- 1:38:50Speaker 8: is just a great program for all Utahns that you
- 1:38:53Speaker 8: can get behind and get on board with. We want
- 1:38:55Speaker 8: to make water filtration easy and convenient for everybody because
- 1:38:58Speaker 8: everybody deserves to have better water.
- 1:39:01Speaker 3: So call Culligan.
- 1:39:02Speaker 4: 801-509-9602 or culliganslc.com. And immediately the question, when you tell
- 1:39:09Speaker 4: me about a subscription thing is like, okay, How long
- 1:39:11Speaker 4: does this, how long am I locked in? Right? Because
- 1:39:14Speaker 4: I want to give it, if I'm just testing this
- 1:39:16Speaker 4: thing out, I want to give it long enough to
- 1:39:17Speaker 4: know what the results are for me and for my home.
- 1:39:19Speaker 4: But a lot of people get really leery about being
- 1:39:22Speaker 4: locked into things super long-term. So if someone calls today,
- 1:39:26Speaker 4: 801-509-9602 says, I heard about it on the Sean O'Connell
- 1:39:30Speaker 4: show on ESPN 700.
- 1:39:32Speaker 3: What's the length of the subscription? Oh yeah.
- 1:39:34Speaker 7: We can, we can set up on a month to
- 1:39:36Speaker 7: month for you.
- 1:39:37Speaker 12: Absolutely.
- 1:39:38Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 1:39:39Speaker 11: And the nice thing about that, too, and why we
- 1:39:42Speaker 11: can provide this is because we're confident in our products.
- 1:39:47Speaker 11: Lots of other softeners out there. There's no way economically
- 1:39:50Speaker 11: that other businesses and other products could do this because
- 1:39:53Speaker 11: they would spend way too much time sending their service
- 1:39:56Speaker 11: techs out there, replacing equipment, replacing parts. The business model
- 1:40:02Speaker 11: a lot of competitors are in is just replacing the equipment.
- 1:40:05Speaker 11: Every five years, they want you to buy a new
- 1:40:07Speaker 11: softener from them. We've got softeners that are out there
- 1:40:10Speaker 11: that have been working for 20, 30 years. That's what's
- 1:40:13Speaker 11: so nice about our products, and that's why we can
- 1:40:15Speaker 11: offer this at such a low price because we're confident
- 1:40:18Speaker 11: that our products work and that they will work for you.
- 1:40:22Speaker 11: And you're going to be happy with us, so you'll
- 1:40:23Speaker 11: continue with our service. If you're only a customer of
- 1:40:27Speaker 11: ours for four months, we've lost a lot of money.
- 1:40:30Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:40:30Speaker 9: Right.
- 1:40:31Speaker 11: But we know that our customers stick and they're happy
- 1:40:34Speaker 11: with us.
- 1:40:34Speaker 4: That's one of the ways you can almost right off
- 1:40:37Speaker 4: the bat know if a company believes in its own
- 1:40:39Speaker 4: service and its own product. If they're trying to lock
- 1:40:42Speaker 4: you in long term, if they're effectively getting that one
- 1:40:46Speaker 4: purchase from you, oh, you got to be with us
- 1:40:49Speaker 4: for two years. Oh, you got to be with us
- 1:40:50Speaker 4: for at least a year. If they actually believe in
- 1:40:53Speaker 4: the product, they're happy to do month to month because
- 1:40:54Speaker 4: they know that you're going to get the service. You're
- 1:40:58Speaker 4: going to feel the improvement. You're going to drink better water.
- 1:41:00Speaker 4: Your appliances are going to feel better. Your hair is
- 1:41:02Speaker 4: going to be as good as Colson's hair. Is that
- 1:41:07Speaker 4: why you have your hair like that?
- 1:41:08Speaker 3: That's exactly why. I've grown up with collagen water my
- 1:41:11Speaker 3: whole life. People are just like, oh my gosh. Can
- 1:41:14Speaker 3: my hair look like that? Can I shampoo like you?
- 1:41:18Speaker 4: If you're not watching on the YouTube, trust me. Colson's
- 1:41:21Speaker 4: got a head of hair on him.
- 1:41:22Speaker 7: Check camera two, not camera one.
- 1:41:25Speaker 4: We're not going to talk about the.
- 1:41:27Speaker 3: Other two of us in the studio.
- 1:41:28Speaker 7: I provide the lighting in the room.
- 1:41:32Speaker 9: 801-509-9602.
- 1:41:32Speaker 4: I mean, really, at the cost point we're talking about here,
- 1:41:38Speaker 4: at the no maintenance, I don't have to worry about
- 1:41:41Speaker 4: filter replacement and refill and salt and all that stuff.
- 1:41:44Speaker 4: It's kind of a no-brainer for people to at least
- 1:41:47Speaker 4: make the phone call and get the home water test.
- 1:41:49Speaker 3: Absolutely. We hooked James up the other day. You did.
- 1:41:54Speaker 2: You did a few months ago. It's been amazing. I
- 1:41:57Speaker 2: feel like my hair is much better.
- 1:41:58Speaker 7: It is.
- 1:41:59Speaker 3: You're starting to look more like me by the day.
- 1:42:01Speaker 4: I actually didn't notice that, James, but yeah, your hair.
- 1:42:04Speaker 3: Look how good it looks. That's what it is. It's
- 1:42:07Speaker 3: never been this good. He looks well hydrated, too. All right.
- 1:42:11Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I was telling him, the commercials say, hey,
- 1:42:14Speaker 2: is your skin super itchy, all that stuff? I didn't
- 1:42:17Speaker 2: realize how bad it was until we made the switch.
- 1:42:20Speaker 2: And now, like, I'm not saying it's completely itch-free, but
- 1:42:23Speaker 2: it's way more noticeable. I had no idea that the
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: hard water could be contributing to that. So it's really
- 1:42:29Speaker 2: made a big difference. I'm itching from something else, too.
- 1:42:31Speaker 4: Yeah, James has got itches going on. Culligan's not responsible
- 1:42:35Speaker 4: for your itches one way or another, okay?
- 1:42:37Speaker 3: Good point.
- 1:42:38Speaker 4: 801-509- 9 6 0 2. Call again, slc.com. Call them.
- 1:42:45Speaker 4: Make sure you mentioned you heard about it on the
- 1:42:46Speaker 4: Sean O'Connell show. They're hooking us all up. They're hooking
- 1:42:49Speaker 4: you up. They will take care of you. We're going
- 1:42:51Speaker 4: to get a refill on the jug here in studio. 801-509-9602.
- 1:42:56Speaker 4: Thanks fellas.
- 1:42:57Speaker 9: Thanks.
- 1:42:58Speaker 4: All right. Dish in with dev QB one starting quarterback
- 1:43:02Speaker 4: for the university of Utah. Next on the Sean O'Connell

- 1:43:24Speaker 5: Star signal caller Devin Dampier on your home of the
- 1:43:27Speaker 5: Utes and your home for football. ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 1:43:33Speaker 4: It is that time again on the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 1:43:36Speaker 4: QB1 joins us from your University of Utah football team.
- 1:43:40Speaker 4: Dishing with Deb, brought to you by Culligan Water of
- 1:43:42Speaker 4: Salt Lake City, America First Credit Union, and Valley Plumbing, Heating, Cooling,
- 1:43:49Speaker 4: and Excavation. Devin Dampier, welcome back to the show.
- 1:43:52Speaker 3: How are you, sir?
- 1:43:53Speaker 9: Man, doing well, doing well. Happy to have another week
- 1:43:57Speaker 9: of playing football.
- 1:43:58Speaker 3: 2-0 for your Utes, up to No.
- 1:44:00Speaker 4: 17 in the national rankings, beating an Arkansas Razorbacks team
- 1:44:05Speaker 4: that was only the second SEC squad to come into
- 1:44:07Speaker 4: Rice-Eccles Stadium. As visitors, night game, great atmosphere. Tell me
- 1:44:13Speaker 4: how you felt walking out onto that field for that
- 1:44:16Speaker 4: game and in that place with all those people who
- 1:44:19Speaker 4: want to watch and see what No.
- 1:44:21Speaker 3: 4 could do.
- 1:44:22Speaker 6: Man, I mean, first.
- 1:44:25Speaker 9: I think there was a little extra motivation going into
- 1:44:28Speaker 9: that game. Just a couple of things being said before. And,
- 1:44:32Speaker 9: you know, we just, you know, we're a very respectful team. We,
- 1:44:35Speaker 9: we don't play, we play very, I would say we
- 1:44:39Speaker 9: play very nasty, relentless, but you know, we're.
- 1:44:42Speaker 10: A normal, respectful team.
- 1:44:44Speaker 9: So just to hear that from the other side, definitely
- 1:44:46Speaker 9: gave us some motivation and especially our crowd, you know, they,
- 1:44:50Speaker 9: they packed it out.
- 1:44:51Speaker 10: They made sure They felt that energy.
- 1:44:54Speaker 9: And man, I try to tell people, you don't lose
- 1:44:57Speaker 9: at night. Dark hours get real.
- 1:45:00Speaker 4: On the field, as the game progressed, how were the
- 1:45:03Speaker 4: Arkansas Razorbacks like as opponents? Were they trash talking type?
- 1:45:08Speaker 4: Were they guys like when you got hit, they let
- 1:45:10Speaker 4: you know about it? Like, how did that vibe play
- 1:45:13Speaker 4: out as the game progressed?
- 1:45:16Speaker 9: Yeah. I would say.
- 1:45:22Speaker 9: They were feeling a little confident at the beginning. And
- 1:45:24Speaker 9: then I think we just, I think we played in
- 1:45:26Speaker 9: a way where, you know, it was, it was dominant,
- 1:45:30Speaker 9: both sides of the ball, honestly, at that defense, you know,
- 1:45:35Speaker 9: for them to continue to get stops and let us
- 1:45:37Speaker 9: play on short field. And we definitely tried to make
- 1:45:39Speaker 9: the most, most of it on offense. And, you know,
- 1:45:42Speaker 9: I just thought we were clicking on all cylinders.
- 1:45:43Speaker 4: Speaker 0 7, I know you were asked about this
- 1:45:46Speaker 4: in the post game presser and We have talked about it.
- 1:45:49Speaker 4: It's going to be a theme, I think, with these conversations.
- 1:45:52Speaker 4: Your guy, Mac G, he's in his bag, and he
- 1:45:55Speaker 4: is a mad scientist, and he is not afraid to
- 1:45:58Speaker 4: do anything unorthodox. First play of the game, double pass.
- 1:46:03Speaker 4: You to Bird, Bird to Wayshon. And it kind of
- 1:46:05Speaker 4: was a tone setter, I think, when you guys got
- 1:46:07Speaker 4: out there offensively. You were laughing about how, you know,
- 1:46:11Speaker 4: that got put in as the first play of the game.
- 1:46:13Speaker 4: But for the people who did not get to hear
- 1:46:15Speaker 4: you post-game, recount that story again for me. Like, that
- 1:46:19Speaker 4: is a really kind of like out-of-this-world play to start
- 1:46:23Speaker 4: a game with. And yet, that was play number one.
- 1:46:28Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:46:28Speaker 9: So, no, me and Maggi, we run through the offensive
- 1:46:32Speaker 9: script that Friday. And he was like, I'm.
- 1:46:36Speaker 10: Putting that first.
- 1:46:37Speaker 9: And I got first, you know, I didn't I didn't
- 1:46:39Speaker 9: necessarily believe him fully. I was like, there ain't no
- 1:46:42Speaker 9: way he can start off with a double pass. And
- 1:46:44Speaker 9: then we got to Saturday. We had our offensive unit
- 1:46:47Speaker 9: meeting before and he was like. he was like, I
- 1:46:50Speaker 9: ain't going back on my word.
- 1:46:51Speaker 10: Like we coming out, we coming out with.
- 1:46:53Speaker 9: A double pass and everybody was like, oh, he's real
- 1:46:55Speaker 9: about to do it. So, you know, he's all about
- 1:46:59Speaker 9: keeping his word and, you know, we trust him with
- 1:47:03Speaker 9: what he calls out there. And as you can see,
- 1:47:05Speaker 9: it works out.
- 1:47:06Speaker 4: Speaker 0 7th, it does work out another big performance
- 1:47:10Speaker 4: for you all offensively. Look, Arkansas, I give them credit
- 1:47:13Speaker 4: for that first drive, shoot up half of the first quarter.
- 1:47:16Speaker 4: then the defense boat up, they only gave up the
- 1:47:18Speaker 4: three points. And then it was basically youths the whole
- 1:47:22Speaker 4: rest of the way. Did, did what you saw actually
- 1:47:26Speaker 4: see from them, what you saw from them defensively in
- 1:47:29Speaker 4: real gameplay, did it kind of match your expectations based
- 1:47:32Speaker 4: on the week of film study?
- 1:47:35Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:47:35Speaker 10: I definitely thought they were, you know, as big as.
- 1:47:38Speaker 9: They looked on film, you know, I think When you
- 1:47:42Speaker 9: talk about size, I think there's a SEC, they normally
- 1:47:45Speaker 9: get the sizing and stuff, but I mean, we, we just,
- 1:47:49Speaker 9: we knew we had to go into this game. We
- 1:47:51Speaker 9: had to prepare the right way and, you know, play
- 1:47:53Speaker 9: the way we do. And that was going to get
- 1:47:54Speaker 9: us to win. So I thought we did a good
- 1:47:57Speaker 9: job of that.
- 1:47:59Speaker 12: Way.
- 1:47:59Speaker 4: Sean had another great game, 10 carries. So I think
- 1:48:02Speaker 4: there's a lot of people who expect at some point
- 1:48:05Speaker 4: that the, The handoffs will increase to weigh Sean. Ten
- 1:48:09Speaker 4: carries on the ground, over five yards average on the ground.
- 1:48:12Speaker 4: He had, again, five catches in the passing game. One
- 1:48:16Speaker 4: of those was a touchdown catch. And, you know, we
- 1:48:19Speaker 4: had a chance to talk. with him after practice the
- 1:48:21Speaker 4: other day. He's obviously, you know, he's put in the
- 1:48:23Speaker 4: hard work this offseason, as you said, as the coaches
- 1:48:26Speaker 4: have said, and it's paying off through these first two games.
- 1:48:29Speaker 3: Just amazing.
- 1:48:30Speaker 4: Talk to me about, you know, the, the trust you
- 1:48:32Speaker 4: all have in way, Sean, and his ability in both
- 1:48:35Speaker 4: the passing game and in the run game to kind
- 1:48:37Speaker 4: of be that, that guy, he's almost the number one receiver,
- 1:48:40Speaker 4: despite the fact that he plays running back.
- 1:48:43Speaker 9: Yeah, no, we, we told way Sean, you know, especially,
- 1:48:47Speaker 9: and that's something he's wanted, you know, we didn't have
- 1:48:50Speaker 9: to put that on him, but he wanted to be
- 1:48:51Speaker 9: a fully complete back.
- 1:48:53Speaker 10: That was his mindset coming into this year.
- 1:48:55Speaker 9: And just the way our offense flows, you know, especially
- 1:48:59Speaker 9: with our deep threats, you know, we get a lot
- 1:49:01Speaker 9: of drop coverage and honestly deacon the ball down the
- 1:49:04Speaker 9: way Sean is. That's the best part of the play
- 1:49:07Speaker 9: is put way Sean in space and let him go
- 1:49:09Speaker 9: do what he does. And just as efficiency on being
- 1:49:12Speaker 9: able to catch the ball and create plays in the
- 1:49:14Speaker 9: passing game. And then when we need him to get
- 1:49:17Speaker 9: those three yards for a first down, I mean, give
- 1:49:20Speaker 9: it away.
- 1:49:22Speaker 4: So he can run the ball. He can, Catch the ball.
- 1:49:26Speaker 4: You could throw the ball. You could also run the
- 1:49:28Speaker 4: ball very effectively. You did so again for two touchdowns
- 1:49:31Speaker 4: in this game against Arkansas. Last week when we had
- 1:49:34Speaker 4: this conversation, we were kind of looking at the Idaho
- 1:49:37Speaker 4: game post-matchup. It was like, yeah, maybe I could have
- 1:49:40Speaker 4: not taken this hit here or I could have slid
- 1:49:43Speaker 4: there or whatever. Tell me what the film study, the
- 1:49:47Speaker 4: coach's reaction to your game on last Saturday was like.
- 1:49:52Speaker 9: Yeah. Um, you know, I think, I think my first,
- 1:49:56Speaker 9: I think, I believe it was the second or third
- 1:49:58Speaker 9: drive where I felt like I was just a little
- 1:50:00Speaker 9: less efficient than I was the rest of the night. And,
- 1:50:02Speaker 9: you know, that was just something that was communicated to me,
- 1:50:06Speaker 9: just slow down your brain, slow down your process of
- 1:50:09Speaker 9: what you're thinking out there. And, um, and then also
- 1:50:12Speaker 9: having an interception as well, just kind of, it felt
- 1:50:15Speaker 9: like I had a bad drive, then had an interception
- 1:50:18Speaker 9: back to back. So, um, Just to be able to have,
- 1:50:21Speaker 9: you know, my teammates, my coaches behind me, just motivated
- 1:50:24Speaker 9: me to go out there. We've seen you practice. We've
- 1:50:26Speaker 9: seen you do all this, just believe it's going to happen.
- 1:50:29Speaker 9: And you know, that's, that was my mindset to go
- 1:50:33Speaker 9: back out there and do what I do. And I thought,
- 1:50:35Speaker 9: you know, after kind of those drives, we were clicking
- 1:50:37Speaker 9: our all cylinders, the rest of the game.
- 1:50:39Speaker 4: Speaker 0 7, take me inside your like individual mental
- 1:50:42Speaker 4: reset process, because that's a normal thing in the ebb
- 1:50:45Speaker 4: and flow. of a football game, you're going to have
- 1:50:47Speaker 4: a great series. You're going to have one that's not
- 1:50:49Speaker 4: so great. There are going to be turnovers, right? And
- 1:50:52Speaker 4: I think one of the most important things for anyone
- 1:50:54Speaker 4: in your position is you got to forget about that
- 1:50:57Speaker 4: last one and you got to go out and perform.
- 1:50:59Speaker 3: The next time.
- 1:51:00Speaker 4: Do you have a deliberate process? Do you have a method?
- 1:51:02Speaker 4: Do you have like a self-speak? Is there something that
- 1:51:05Speaker 4: you do every time or is it just, you know,
- 1:51:08Speaker 4: absorbing in the moment? Tell me how that reset goes
- 1:51:11Speaker 4: for Devin Depp here.
- 1:51:13Speaker 9: Yeah, you know, I.
- 1:51:14Speaker 10: Try not to be the biggest isolator, but that is.
- 1:51:18Speaker 9: What calls me down. Like, I love that my teammates
- 1:51:21Speaker 9: come next to me. They tell me, like, we're good,
- 1:51:24Speaker 9: you're good, and all that. But I definitely need, like,
- 1:51:28Speaker 9: just a quick thing.
- 1:51:29Speaker 10: It's normally just, like, 30 seconds a minute.
- 1:51:31Speaker 9: I just kind of coast off to the sideline away
- 1:51:34Speaker 9: from people and just kind of breathe and let my body,
- 1:51:38Speaker 9: you know, reset, relax, and, you know, forget about it.
- 1:51:42Speaker 4: Is that something that you developed deliberately? How did you
- 1:51:47Speaker 4: come to that as your reset?
- 1:51:52Speaker 9: Just calming me down. I think when I'm able to
- 1:51:57Speaker 9: just make it where it's just me and me only
- 1:51:59Speaker 9: in my brain at that point, I'm able to kind
- 1:52:02Speaker 9: of talk to myself and just.
- 1:52:05Speaker 10: tell myself to move on. And it just, it seems to.
- 1:52:08Speaker 9: Slow down my, my, like my heart rate, my heart
- 1:52:10Speaker 9: rates are going out a little bit and I can
- 1:52:12Speaker 9: just feel my mind kind of ease down.
- 1:52:16Speaker 4: Small grievance against you. We did not know that you
- 1:52:19Speaker 4: were a dancer. Okay. You have not told us about
- 1:52:22Speaker 4: this in the past. You had your little MJ celebration
- 1:52:25Speaker 4: on that last rushing touchdown. Took a big lick credit
- 1:52:29Speaker 4: to that. I think it was a safety coming downhill.
- 1:52:31Speaker 4: But at the end of the day, you're in the
- 1:52:33Speaker 4: end zone and then you're celebrating. Where did the Michael
- 1:52:37Speaker 4: Jackson come from?
- 1:52:39Speaker 9: You know, I told him, I actually, I told my
- 1:52:41Speaker 9: little brother and my grandma, like this summer, I was
- 1:52:44Speaker 9: going to do that. I was going to be my
- 1:52:46Speaker 9: first Sally. My first touchdown, I.
- 1:52:48Speaker 10: Was still frustrated about my interception.
- 1:52:50Speaker 9: So I didn't have it in my, my heart to
- 1:52:53Speaker 9: celebrate yet, but near definitely third quarter, it was, you know,
- 1:52:57Speaker 9: it was fully fleshed out. I was, I was ready
- 1:52:59Speaker 9: to hit it the.
- 1:53:00Speaker 10: Next time I got in the end zone. So yeah,
- 1:53:03Speaker 10: bust them MJ.
- 1:53:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:53:05Speaker 4: And the spider, the spider band celebration seems to be
- 1:53:08Speaker 4: catching on with everybody. I don't know if you noticed
- 1:53:11Speaker 4: the must is doing it now. Some of your teammates
- 1:53:13Speaker 4: are doing it. That's it's becoming a branding thing.
- 1:53:16Speaker 9: Speaker 4 05,0 Yeah, no, I, after the Michael Jackson,
- 1:53:21Speaker 9: I like, I turned to the mess and I started
- 1:53:23Speaker 9: webbing them up and like all of them, all of
- 1:53:26Speaker 9: them caught on.
- 1:53:27Speaker 10: So it was pretty sick.
- 1:53:27Speaker 4: Speaker 1 05,0 That's pretty cool. This year with dev
- 1:53:31Speaker 4: Our conversation with starting quarterback Devin Dampier is brought to
- 1:53:34Speaker 4: you by Culligan Water of Salt Lake City, America First
- 1:53:37Speaker 4: Credit Union, and Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling. Noah Benny
- 1:53:42Speaker 4: with a really big game. Four catches, 113 yards. He
- 1:53:46Speaker 4: was making fun of himself for stumbling down the sideline
- 1:53:50Speaker 4: on that one catch, but just a really incredible game.
- 1:53:53Speaker 4: from a guy who was part of this program, transferred out,
- 1:53:57Speaker 4: transferred back in, gets to play with his brother again.
- 1:53:59Speaker 4: And I'll be honest, there were a lot of us
- 1:54:02Speaker 4: kind of in the media and in the fan base
- 1:54:04Speaker 4: wondering if the tight ends were going to be a
- 1:54:06Speaker 4: huge factor in this offense. And at least in the
- 1:54:09Speaker 4: early goings, guys like Noah Benny are starting to show
- 1:54:12Speaker 4: what the tight end role can be for Mac G
- 1:54:15Speaker 4: and for you. Talk about his game, and is this
- 1:54:18Speaker 4: something that you guys saw in practice during the week
- 1:54:20Speaker 4: and felt like maybe Noah Benny or the other tight
- 1:54:23Speaker 4: ends were going to be a weapon you could use
- 1:54:24Speaker 4: in this matchup with Arkansas?
- 1:54:27Speaker 9: Yeah, we're normally like... our offense is all about like.
- 1:54:33Speaker 10: Where we can find the mismatches, where we can.
- 1:54:35Speaker 9: Find what works for us. And, um, you know, me
- 1:54:39Speaker 9: just being back there, you know, I thought Noah.
- 1:54:41Speaker 10: Uh, First, talking about practice, Noah's one of our harder workers.
- 1:54:47Speaker 9: He definitely asked me for the extra reps after practice
- 1:54:50Speaker 9: if he felt like something didn't feel good to him
- 1:54:52Speaker 9: or he just wanted a second rep on it so
- 1:54:55Speaker 9: he felt good about it in the game. Everything in there,
- 1:54:58Speaker 9: we've definitely practiced before. We've built the scenario in. Benny's
- 1:55:02Speaker 9: such an athletic guy. and how big he is and
- 1:55:06Speaker 9: how much he fits in the run game and stuff
- 1:55:07Speaker 9: like that. Just how good he is in the past
- 1:55:09Speaker 9: game too is amazing. And yeah, just, I thought there
- 1:55:12Speaker 9: was some mismatches in the middle of the field. I thought,
- 1:55:15Speaker 9: you know, Benny being able to get in the middle
- 1:55:17Speaker 9: of the field, that's, that's where the throw was. And
- 1:55:19Speaker 9: he was definitely capitalizing on it.
- 1:55:20Speaker 12: All right.
- 1:55:23Speaker 4: Now you take a look at the offensive line. We
- 1:55:26Speaker 4: have talked about them. Every conversation you and I have
- 1:55:28Speaker 4: had since we restarted this for the 2026 season, we've
- 1:55:32Speaker 4: been talking about the offensive line. And still it's a
- 1:55:34Speaker 4: little bit unorthodox with how much rotation is going on.
- 1:55:38Speaker 4: But I think that I'm encouraged by it. I don't
- 1:55:41Speaker 4: want to put words in your mouth, but it feels
- 1:55:43Speaker 4: like it must be encouraging. when they passed the test
- 1:55:46Speaker 4: against SEC Talent. There's a couple of guys on that
- 1:55:49Speaker 4: defensive front for the Razorbacks that are probably going to
- 1:55:51Speaker 4: be playing on Sundays. Both of those guys were non-factors
- 1:55:55Speaker 4: against you, and you've got to give credit to the
- 1:55:58Speaker 4: offensive line for that. You've been optimistic, and you've told us,
- 1:56:01Speaker 4: just wait. I trust my guys. You'll see. But I
- 1:56:05Speaker 4: felt like this was another opportunity for them to kind
- 1:56:08Speaker 4: of pass that test, and they did so with flying colors.
- 1:56:11Speaker 4: What were your thoughts on the offensive line and their
- 1:56:13Speaker 4: performance against Arkansas?
- 1:56:16Speaker 10: I'm very proud of them.
- 1:56:18Speaker 9: Especially who they have up front. We very much respect
- 1:56:20Speaker 9: our opponent. We knew it was going to be a
- 1:56:23Speaker 9: challenge for our O-line going against them all game. Again,
- 1:56:29Speaker 9: I thought they handled it the best possible. It's know, I, I,
- 1:56:33Speaker 9: I had those guys up all the time, but you know,
- 1:56:35Speaker 9: there's a point where I'm like, y'all see what they do.
- 1:56:37Speaker 9: Like the worry shouldn't be there anymore. Just cause of there.
- 1:56:42Speaker 10: I let them prove it on the field. I let
- 1:56:43Speaker 10: them show it on the field, how good they are.
- 1:56:45Speaker 9: And this is another week of, you know, them proving
- 1:56:48Speaker 9: that they were ready to step up.
- 1:56:49Speaker 4: Speaker 0 7, I appreciate the seeming the collective mentality
- 1:56:53Speaker 4: that those guys have, where they haven't shied away from
- 1:56:57Speaker 4: That kind of like sentiment that people are like, I
- 1:57:00Speaker 4: don't know, had a really great offensive line last year.
- 1:57:03Speaker 4: These guys might be a big drop off. When we
- 1:57:05Speaker 4: talk to them as individuals, every one of them mentions like, no,
- 1:57:08Speaker 4: we know what people are saying about us. And we're
- 1:57:10Speaker 4: going to play with a chip on our shoulder so
- 1:57:12Speaker 4: that nobody feels that way. I mean, they keep performing
- 1:57:15Speaker 4: like this and it's going to be. one fewer thing
- 1:57:18Speaker 4: I can talk about on the show, right? We're not
- 1:57:20Speaker 4: going to be able to fill five minutes with, Hey,
- 1:57:23Speaker 4: how's the offensive line going to do? Because I mean,
- 1:57:26Speaker 4: they're really kind of stepping up to the plate here.
- 1:57:28Speaker 4: And I don't know if I've seen a whole unit
- 1:57:31Speaker 4: share that exact same mentality as much as I've seen
- 1:57:33Speaker 4: it this year with those guys.
- 1:57:36Speaker 9: Yeah, that just talks about their characters from, you know,
- 1:57:39Speaker 9: them being behind those guys last year and, you know,
- 1:57:43Speaker 9: being the starter now and still wanting the edge. Like,
- 1:57:47Speaker 9: it's never.
- 1:57:48Speaker 10: Enough for those guys. And, you know, that's what you
- 1:57:50Speaker 10: want out of your starters.
- 1:57:51Speaker 9: You want guys that want to continue to be better
- 1:57:53Speaker 9: than what they feel like is good.
- 1:57:55Speaker 10: It's never good enough.
- 1:57:57Speaker 9: And, you know, that's how those guys are taking it.
- 1:58:00Speaker 4: Okay, back to the playbook, because it is, I think,
- 1:58:03Speaker 4: one of the funnest, most interesting, most creative playbooks we've
- 1:58:06Speaker 4: seen so far in this 2026 season. And we speculated
- 1:58:10Speaker 4: on this with you and Bird and your relationship and
- 1:58:13Speaker 4: the ability that both of you guys have. We saw
- 1:58:15Speaker 4: another crazy play where it's, you know, you're the dive
- 1:58:20Speaker 4: man on an option and then you're also the quarterback
- 1:58:23Speaker 4: on the option and now he's the pitch man. I
- 1:58:26Speaker 4: asked Bird after practice if that play also exists in
- 1:58:29Speaker 4: the playbook and where you are the pitch man, where
- 1:58:31Speaker 4: you get the pitch back from Bird, and then you're
- 1:58:33Speaker 4: the guy who gets to score or whatever. Do you
- 1:58:36Speaker 4: guys fight over who gets to be what? Does Mac G... say, no,
- 1:58:40Speaker 4: I need Devin playing this role. Do you guys decide
- 1:58:42Speaker 4: that between yourselves? When it is a two quarterback, you know,
- 1:58:46Speaker 4: back and forth, who makes the decision on who ends
- 1:58:50Speaker 4: up with the ball on who runs which role in
- 1:58:52Speaker 4: the play?
- 1:58:54Speaker 9: Yeah. You know, I normally call the shot, but I think,
- 1:58:59Speaker 9: you know, there's certain situations where I think it benefits
- 1:59:03Speaker 9: me more if I'm going a certain direction and birds
- 1:59:06Speaker 9: go another direction or vice versa. I think, you know,
- 1:59:09Speaker 9: it just, it benefits our offense depending on which way
- 1:59:13Speaker 9: the play is going. So, but we practice it so
- 1:59:16Speaker 9: much in practice by game day, you know, we're kind of,
- 1:59:19Speaker 9: we know exactly what's going on. I give a look
- 1:59:22Speaker 9: at the defense and then we'll kind of, when we're,
- 1:59:25Speaker 9: when we're both meeting at the middle, I'll tell him
- 1:59:27Speaker 9: he's taking QVR.
- 1:59:29Speaker 10: You'll see him the other way around.
- 1:59:31Speaker 9: He'll point at me. So, you know, I mean, we
- 1:59:33Speaker 9: were pretty locked down on the playbook, but yeah, Maggie's
- 1:59:36Speaker 9: cooking up.
- 1:59:38Speaker 4: So, And I know you probably are sick of talking
- 1:59:41Speaker 4: about this. You two have this kind of, like, unique relationship.
- 1:59:44Speaker 4: Is there any, like, selfish element to it that you
- 1:59:48Speaker 4: have to even fight? Like, where you're just like, man,
- 1:59:50Speaker 4: I want to be the one that ends up with
- 1:59:52Speaker 4: the ball in his hand. Or I know this play
- 1:59:54Speaker 4: is going to be big, so I want to be
- 1:59:55Speaker 4: the one throwing it. Or I want to be the one,
- 1:59:57Speaker 4: you know, that receives the pitch.
- 1:59:59Speaker 3: Or whatever it is.
- 2:00:01Speaker 4: That mad scientist stuff allows for so many different possibilities.
- 2:00:06Speaker 4: You and Bird, you always say the right thing. You
- 2:00:08Speaker 4: always feel the right thing where you're like, you know,
- 2:00:10Speaker 4: I don't care as long as we score.
- 2:00:13Speaker 9: Yeah. No, I think, I think Bird is, you know, for,
- 2:00:18Speaker 9: for him, like he knows he's the backup this year,
- 2:00:20Speaker 9: but he knows that we need, we need him on
- 2:00:22Speaker 9: the field as well. So him having that being a
- 2:00:26Speaker 9: quarterback in that play playmaker mindset, you know, there's a
- 2:00:30Speaker 9: lot we ask on his plate and I just kind of, I'm,
- 2:00:34Speaker 9: I'm a guy, whatever gets the offense wrong, whatever, whatever
- 2:00:37Speaker 9: moves to change, you know, that's, that's what I'm in for. So,
- 2:00:40Speaker 9: and you know, bird's the same way he's, he, as
- 2:00:43Speaker 9: much as he knows I'm the starter, he's still trying.
- 2:00:46Speaker 10: To find a way to show value to our team.
- 2:00:48Speaker 10: Cause man, we need them on the field as well.
- 2:00:50Speaker 9: So, and I think he goes in there and, you know,
- 2:00:53Speaker 9: he does what he does that, at the highest levels
- 2:00:55Speaker 9: that he can. And it's a, it's great that, you know,
- 2:00:58Speaker 9: we're both able to be back there and do his
- 2:01:00Speaker 9: best for the team and wouldn't move the six.
- 2:01:04Speaker 4: How much of your own defense do you get to
- 2:01:06Speaker 4: watch during the actual games? Like I'm not paying attention
- 2:01:09Speaker 4: to where you are when the defense is on the field.
- 2:01:11Speaker 4: Obviously I'm watching what Arkansas is doing and what your
- 2:01:14Speaker 4: defense is doing. And I asked that question because like
- 2:01:17Speaker 4: Jai Moore had an unbelievable game and he You might
- 2:01:21Speaker 4: not know that until the game's over.
- 2:01:23Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 2:01:24Speaker 4: Do you get to watch your defense at all, or
- 2:01:26Speaker 4: are you talking to Mac G, talking to Jordan Gross
- 2:01:29Speaker 4: and everyone on the sideline when that's happening?
- 2:01:32Speaker 9: Yeah, I would say normally... I feel like we've been
- 2:01:36Speaker 9: scoring in about six, like eight plays, every kind of drive.
- 2:01:39Speaker 10: So normally if the other team gets.
- 2:01:42Speaker 9: A first down, then I get to watch our defense go.
- 2:01:45Speaker 10: But if our defense gets a three and out.
- 2:01:47Speaker 9: Man, it's, it's cooked. I'm I'm over there watching the iPad.
- 2:01:50Speaker 10: And then we're like, it's third down and third down
- 2:01:52Speaker 10: and third.
- 2:01:52Speaker 9: And then I'm getting up.
- 2:01:53Speaker 10: So it depends how fast they, they get off the field, honestly.
- 2:01:58Speaker 4: So like in this game, did you get a chance
- 2:02:00Speaker 4: to see number 90 Jai? Did you get a chance
- 2:02:02Speaker 4: to see him have kind of the breakout performance that
- 2:02:05Speaker 4: a lot of people were expecting was coming at some point.
- 2:02:07Speaker 9: Speaker 4, I did not get to see all, all
- 2:02:10Speaker 9: of jive, but I didn't get to see him until after,
- 2:02:15Speaker 9: after the game, obviously just going up.
- 2:02:17Speaker 10: To the press conference, I was like.
- 2:02:19Speaker 9: Oh wait, John was snapping. So, but yeah. And then,
- 2:02:24Speaker 9: you know, everybody's kind of talked to him on the sideline. You,
- 2:02:26Speaker 9: you hear people like Jai, Jai's going crazy. And then
- 2:02:31Speaker 9: I don't get to see it, but I'm like that.
- 2:02:34Speaker 4: That's got to be kind of cool. It's like a
- 2:02:35Speaker 4: little Christmas present after the game where you're like, oh,
- 2:02:38Speaker 4: not only are we playing well, but look what my
- 2:02:39Speaker 4: guy did.
- 2:02:40Speaker 3: That's kind of nice. I like that.
- 2:02:42Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 2:02:43Speaker 4: Devin Dampierre for a couple more minutes here. Edition with
- 2:02:45Speaker 4: Deb brought to you by Culligan Water of Salt Lake City,
- 2:02:47Speaker 4: America First Credit Union, and Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling.
- 2:02:51Speaker 4: So now turning the page to Utah State. The Battle
- 2:02:55Speaker 4: of the Brothers, they call it. It's kind of one
- 2:02:58Speaker 4: of those weird games where it is also an in-state rivalry.
- 2:03:01Speaker 4: It is not the main rivalry. That's obviously BYU. But
- 2:03:06Speaker 4: there's a lot of familiarity between these two teams. You got,
- 2:03:09Speaker 4: you know, when your top receivers came from there last year.
- 2:03:12Speaker 4: Your offensive coordinator came from there last year. That, I guess,
- 2:03:16Speaker 4: is the nature of college football these days. But what
- 2:03:19Speaker 4: are your expectations for Utah State? What do you know
- 2:03:21Speaker 4: about the Aggies?
- 2:03:24Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:03:24Speaker 9: Um, so Bronco mineral was my head coach at New Mexico.
- 2:03:28Speaker 10: My sophomore year. And, um, you know, I personally.
- 2:03:31Speaker 9: Know how he runs a program and, uh, he's very
- 2:03:35Speaker 9: tough minded, just, just like us here at Utah. Um,
- 2:03:39Speaker 9: you know, he wants, he wants his guys to be
- 2:03:41Speaker 9: the tough.
- 2:03:41Speaker 10: Minded people that's able to play the full four quarters.
- 2:03:44Speaker 9: And, um, yeah, just fight. So, you know, we're expecting,
- 2:03:49Speaker 9: you know, a very, very competitive team to come out here. And, and,
- 2:03:54Speaker 9: you know, there's, there's that little bit of little brother,
- 2:03:57Speaker 9: big brother kind of mentality where, you know, they're, they're
- 2:04:00Speaker 9: going to come out, they're going to come out on
- 2:04:01Speaker 9: on cylinders and we're expecting that. So, you know, we
- 2:04:05Speaker 9: need to prepare the right way as well.
- 2:04:08Speaker 4: What are they showing on film from what you've been
- 2:04:09Speaker 4: able to see so far?
- 2:04:13Speaker 9: Yeah, I think, you know, up front, I think, you know,
- 2:04:15Speaker 9: they're showing that They can battle, they can battle. You know,
- 2:04:19Speaker 9: I thought they battled Washington pretty well on the run game.
- 2:04:22Speaker 9: You know, they show they can be there and, you know,
- 2:04:24Speaker 9: they got some, they got athletic safeties, athletic corners. So,
- 2:04:30Speaker 9: I mean, yeah, but they're, they're very well-rounded team. You know,
- 2:04:33Speaker 9: there's a reason why they're able to stick around with
- 2:04:35Speaker 9: Washington and, you know, it's again, our job to prepare
- 2:04:40Speaker 9: the right way and, you know, do what we do
- 2:04:41Speaker 9: when game time comes.
- 2:04:43Speaker 4: OK, so now that we've seen some more of the
- 2:04:45Speaker 4: craziness in this playbook, do you feel like is that
- 2:04:49Speaker 4: going to be a theme that continues? I was asking
- 2:04:51Speaker 4: this question to one of our NFL guests yesterday, like
- 2:04:54Speaker 4: how sustainable this level of creativity is when you get into,
- 2:04:59Speaker 4: you know, not only a game like this one, but
- 2:05:00Speaker 4: when you get into like conference play and like. the
- 2:05:03Speaker 4: gadget plays, the stuff that people don't really see, is
- 2:05:07Speaker 4: that going to be part of this offensive identity, or
- 2:05:10Speaker 4: is this just something that you're putting on film so
- 2:05:12Speaker 4: everyone's got to prepare for it? Do we see more
- 2:05:14Speaker 4: of the craziness? Do we see more of the creativity
- 2:05:16Speaker 4: against Utah State?
- 2:05:20Speaker 9: Man, I would say, yeah. I mean, with who we
- 2:05:23Speaker 9: have back there, you know, I wouldn't say– it may
- 2:05:29Speaker 9: seem like it at times, but like, man, there's so
- 2:05:32Speaker 9: many elements to our, our, which I call gadget plays.
- 2:05:36Speaker 9: Like there's so many things that we can do during
- 2:05:38Speaker 9: those plays to make sure the play goes right. So,
- 2:05:43Speaker 9: you know, if the, if what we want to run
- 2:05:46Speaker 9: isn't there, you know, there's a way me and Bert
- 2:05:49Speaker 9: can check out of something there's, you know, we don't
- 2:05:51Speaker 9: have to, do that. We don't have to force it.
- 2:05:54Speaker 9: So I feel like there's definitely a good balance of
- 2:05:58Speaker 9: the plays we're doing, even though they're exotic, there's, there's
- 2:06:01Speaker 9: definitely reasons why we're doing it and why they work.
- 2:06:04Speaker 9: There's reasons for it. So I think, I think, you know, it's,
- 2:06:08Speaker 9: it's a good element of our offense for defenses to
- 2:06:10Speaker 9: be able to prepare for every week.
- 2:06:11Speaker 10: Cause man, that just puts in.
- 2:06:13Speaker 9: A whole nother 20 plays, 20 play scenarios that they
- 2:06:17Speaker 9: could expect and didn't never happen. You know?
- 2:06:21Speaker 4: Even as I was asking the question, I guess I
- 2:06:23Speaker 4: wonder if gadget plays the right way to characterize this
- 2:06:25Speaker 4: because of what you just said. Gadget plays are these
- 2:06:28Speaker 4: things that you run once or twice during a season,
- 2:06:32Speaker 4: and it's a home run or it's a strikeout. They're
- 2:06:35Speaker 4: slow developing. It's craziness that nobody has seen on film before.
- 2:06:40Speaker 4: But if that's not the approach in these plays, and
- 2:06:44Speaker 4: if there are secondary options or they're check down or
- 2:06:47Speaker 4: check out options, and it's just part of the fabric
- 2:06:49Speaker 4: of the offense, I guess gadget play probably isn't the
- 2:06:52Speaker 4: right way to characterize that.
- 2:06:54Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:06:55Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 2:06:55Speaker 9: That's a, yeah. It's almost like just, it's, it's a normal,
- 2:07:00Speaker 9: it's a normal offense to play, but we got to,
- 2:07:02Speaker 9: we got a good way of dressing it up for sure.
- 2:07:04Speaker 9: And you know, if, if it isn't there yet, again,
- 2:07:08Speaker 9: there's always a way to check out of it and make.
- 2:07:11Speaker 10: Sure we're in the right situation at the right time.
- 2:07:15Speaker 4: To get nitpicky because that's what fans do when everything's
- 2:07:17Speaker 4: going very well. There, there were people last week, Myself included.
- 2:07:22Speaker 4: I was watching the second half of the game with
- 2:07:25Speaker 4: Eric Weddle and his people that he'd been inducted into
- 2:07:29Speaker 4: the Ring of Honor at halftime, which is cool to see.
- 2:07:31Speaker 4: But more than one of us were just like, man,
- 2:07:34Speaker 4: this game is already in hand. There's no doubt that
- 2:07:38Speaker 4: Utah is going to win this. Why is Devin still
- 2:07:40Speaker 4: in there and why is Devin still running the ball
- 2:07:42Speaker 4: and getting hit at the goal line and things like that?
- 2:07:46Speaker 4: How should we feel about you being in when the
- 2:07:49Speaker 4: game is already won? You're a football player, so you
- 2:07:52Speaker 4: don't mind, I'm sure, but.
- 2:07:54Speaker 9: We don't want to see.
- 2:07:55Speaker 4: You get hit late in the game. That's already decided.
- 2:07:58Speaker 9: Yeah. You know, I'm, I'm a true competitor. I think that,
- 2:08:03Speaker 9: you know, that's one of my biggest characteristics when it
- 2:08:06Speaker 9: comes to football is, you know, I, I didn't not
- 2:08:11Speaker 9: even disrespectfully. I just, my mindset is I want to
- 2:08:13Speaker 9: put 50 on the board every single game. Like that's
- 2:08:15Speaker 9: just the type of mentality that I have when I'm
- 2:08:18Speaker 9: able to come out and play football.
- 2:08:20Speaker 10: So, um, you know, we weren't at 50 yet and
- 2:08:24Speaker 10: I was.
- 2:08:24Speaker 9: Just like, let's keep going. Like let's, let's keep moving
- 2:08:27Speaker 9: the chains. Let's keep doing what we do. And, um,
- 2:08:29Speaker 9: you know, that's also good work for me to just, uh, get,
- 2:08:33Speaker 9: get those plays that, um, You know, we we practice maybe,
- 2:08:37Speaker 9: I don't know, two, two, three.
- 2:08:38Speaker 10: Hundred different plays during during the week.
- 2:08:41Speaker 9: And then, you know, we only run 60 when we
- 2:08:43Speaker 9: get out there. So just to get a feel of
- 2:08:47Speaker 9: what those plays look like in practice and what they
- 2:08:49Speaker 9: look like in game two and making sure we're getting
- 2:08:51Speaker 9: them in.
- 2:08:52Speaker 10: You know, that's also somewhat.
- 2:08:53Speaker 9: Of that mentality as well.
- 2:08:55Speaker 4: Um, you mentioned it, you played for Bronco. What will
- 2:08:59Speaker 4: like a conversation, what will an interaction with Bronco Mendenhall
- 2:09:02Speaker 4: look like for you on game day? If you have one,
- 2:09:04Speaker 4: if you know, out in pregame warmups, cause I really
- 2:09:07Speaker 4: don't know what it's like in modern day college football.
- 2:09:11Speaker 4: When a coach loses his most important player to the
- 2:09:14Speaker 4: transfer portal. If there's bitterness, if there's hostility, I imagine
- 2:09:18Speaker 4: most coaches are just like, that's just the nature of
- 2:09:20Speaker 4: the game these days. Uh, what is your relationship with
- 2:09:23Speaker 4: Bronco Mendenhall?
- 2:09:24Speaker 9: Like, Yeah, me and Bronco are like, I'm definitely going
- 2:09:30Speaker 9: to love him up, and I believe he's going to
- 2:09:33Speaker 9: love me up the same way. We've had a lot
- 2:09:37Speaker 9: of one-on-one conversations when he was my head coach of
- 2:09:40Speaker 9: me going up there and him trying to develop me as, one,
- 2:09:44Speaker 9: a football player, but just as a leader and coach.
- 2:09:49Speaker 9: He was kind of my first head coach that gave
- 2:09:52Speaker 9: me the leadership role, first time being a starting quarterback
- 2:09:55Speaker 9: in college, and he definitely paved the way for that. Yeah,
- 2:09:59Speaker 9: just so many one-on-one conversations, and it's also about life.
- 2:10:04Speaker 9: So yeah, there's definitely more than just we play football together.
- 2:10:08Speaker 10: Yeah, I'm expecting a good.
- 2:10:14Speaker 9: Meet-and-greet when we see each other.
- 2:10:16Speaker 4: Well, we're looking forward to this game. I don't think,
- 2:10:20Speaker 4: are the uniforms red out again? Because twice now it's
- 2:10:23Speaker 4: been red on red on red, and I love that.
- 2:10:25Speaker 4: It's like the traditional, it's what Utah football is supposed
- 2:10:29Speaker 4: to look like in my book.
- 2:10:30Speaker 3: Do we know what the uniform is so far?
- 2:10:34Speaker 9: I believe there will be red.
- 2:10:37Speaker 10: I will believe there should be some red.
- 2:10:41Speaker 9: You know, I try not to spoil it with the
- 2:10:44Speaker 9: jersey reveal. I don't want to be put on the
- 2:10:49Speaker 9: spot for telling the jersey combination. The jersey reveal isn't
- 2:10:53Speaker 9: out yet.
- 2:10:54Speaker 4: You know what? That's my fault because I shouldn't put
- 2:10:57Speaker 4: you in that position because, you know, yeah, that's equipment
- 2:11:00Speaker 4: is supposed to be able to put the announcement out themselves.
- 2:11:02Speaker 4: That's my bad, Dev. But that's how, you know, Devin,
- 2:11:06Speaker 4: Deb here is savvy with the media. Now there will
- 2:11:09Speaker 4: be red.
- 2:11:10Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 2:11:10Speaker 4: We'll have some red on there. Oh, thank you, sir.
- 2:11:12Speaker 3: Wonderful.
- 2:11:13Speaker 9: I'm glad to hear it. Yeah.
- 2:11:15Speaker 10: What other colors is going to be out there?
- 2:11:18Speaker 4: Oh, that's crazy. All right, Dev. Well, good luck. Stay healthy.
- 2:11:21Speaker 4: We'll see you up there on Saturday.
- 2:11:22Speaker 9: All right. Awesome. Appreciate you.
- 2:11:25Speaker 4: That is Devin Dampier, Dishing with Dev, brought to you

- 2:12:42Speaker 4: Culligan Water of Salt Lake City. You need a water softener.
- 2:12:45Speaker 4: You need a whole home filtration system. You just need
- 2:12:48Speaker 4: a water cooler for the office. Culligan can handle all
- 2:12:51Speaker 4: of it. But right now at 801-509-9602, a special offer,

- 2:13:03Speaker 4: of improving the water in their home, for the appliances,
- 2:13:06Speaker 4: for the healthy family, all the reasons you would want it,
- 2:13:10Speaker 4: maybe without that upfront cost, maybe without a big-time purchase
- 2:13:14Speaker 4: of equipment. So, Colson, what is included? If I say,
- 2:13:16Speaker 4: all right, I want this subscription, what am I getting?
- 2:13:20Speaker 3: Do you like free labor?
- 2:13:21Speaker 6: Yes.
- 2:13:21Speaker 3: Do you like free installation?
- 2:13:23Speaker 4: Wait, will you mow my lawn, too?
- 2:13:24Speaker 9: No.
- 2:13:25Speaker 3: No, but I'll bring salt. We'll provide free salt delivery.
- 2:13:28Speaker 3: Does that sound nice?
- 2:13:29Speaker 4: That sounds really good.
- 2:13:30Speaker 9: Okay.
- 2:13:30Speaker 3: Free filter changes?
- 2:13:31Speaker 6: Yep. All right.
- 2:13:32Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 2:13:33Speaker 3: Free everything. I don't know. What else can we give
- 2:13:37Speaker 3: away for free? I don't know. You guys know.
- 2:13:39Speaker 7: Devin might even deliver your salt.
- 2:13:41Speaker 1: Yeah, there you go.
- 2:13:42Speaker 3: Probably not, but maybe. Do you want Devin to come?
- 2:13:44Speaker 3: He's a Culligan Water Salt Lake City guy. He's a guy.
- 2:13:47Speaker 3: He's got better water than the rest of us. So
- 2:13:48Speaker 3: that's what it is, right? You pay us a small.
- 2:13:51Speaker 8: Monthly subscription fee, 30 bucks a month, and we'll come
- 2:13:54Speaker 8: do it all for you. There's no upfront costs, no
- 2:13:56Speaker 8: installation fees. You never pay a service charge. You never
- 2:13:59Speaker 8: pay for parts replacements, right? You never pay for salt delivery.
- 2:14:03Speaker 8: It's all included. And it really allows everybody to look
- 2:14:07Speaker 8: in the mirror and say, okay, I deserve better water.
- 2:14:11Speaker 3: I deserve to feel hydrated and fueled like Devin does.
- 2:14:14Speaker 4: You're kind of taking away all the reasons to not
- 2:14:17Speaker 4: do it, honestly.
- 2:14:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:14:20Speaker 4: Like, I don't want to have to keep buying salt
- 2:14:21Speaker 4: and refilling the dang thing. Honey, deal with the hard water.
- 2:14:24Speaker 4: Everything's going to be fine. This filtered water, is it
- 2:14:28Speaker 4: really improving things? That's one thing that's interesting about this
- 2:14:32Speaker 4: is you come and you test my water first. You
- 2:14:35Speaker 4: test anyone's water first, right?
- 2:14:37Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 2:14:37Speaker 4: You know what the baseline is, so what needs to
- 2:14:39Speaker 4: be improved before the system goes in.
- 2:14:42Speaker 7: Absolutely.
- 2:14:43Speaker 11: So give us a call, 801-509-9602, and it just starts.
- 2:14:47Speaker 11: We'll come out there and test your water for free.
- 2:14:50Speaker 11: You might already have a softener and we might say, hey, look,
- 2:14:52Speaker 11: this softener you've got from the other guy is working great.
- 2:14:56Speaker 11: But maybe the needs that you have is to remove
- 2:14:58Speaker 11: the chlorine from your water. So we can filter that out.
- 2:15:02Speaker 11: Maybe you want a drinking system to go underneath your
- 2:15:06Speaker 11: or under your sink so that you can use it
- 2:15:08Speaker 11: to cook with and clean, safe drinking water.
- 2:15:11Speaker 7: We can provide you with all of those things.
- 2:15:13Speaker 11: The thing that was shocking to me, I've been a
- 2:15:16Speaker 11: part of the Coligan family for seven years now. The
- 2:15:19Speaker 11: thing that was shocking to me getting soft water and
- 2:15:22Speaker 11: getting filtered water is that it actually reduced my expenses.
- 2:15:25Speaker 11: When I added that monthly bill, I didn't realize that
- 2:15:30Speaker 11: when you have soft water, you don't have.
- 2:15:31Speaker 3: To spend it.
- 2:15:32Speaker 11: You don't have to put as much shampoo in your hair.
- 2:15:34Speaker 11: I don't have hair, but my wife and daughter.
- 2:15:37Speaker 4: You're not the right person to talk about the shampoo
- 2:15:40Speaker 4: expenses have gone down.
- 2:15:41Speaker 11: I will also say all of the treatment for the kids, eczema,
- 2:15:45Speaker 11: we're not spending money on that stuff now. So, There
- 2:15:48Speaker 11: are lots of ways that having the right water in
- 2:15:52Speaker 11: your house can reduce the expenses because now you're not
- 2:15:56Speaker 11: spending the money on those ancillary products.
- 2:15:59Speaker 7: To treat bad water.
- 2:16:01Speaker 11: All of the additional expense with soap for laundry, it
- 2:16:04Speaker 11: actually saves you money in the long run.
- 2:16:08Speaker 4: For folks who are like, you know, I haven't really
- 2:16:10Speaker 4: thought about this before. I don't know if I need
- 2:16:13Speaker 4: to improve my water. What's like maybe one of the
- 2:16:16Speaker 4: first signs, the number one signs that like Hey, it's
- 2:16:19Speaker 4: worth making this phone call to 801-509-9602. Yeah.
- 2:16:22Speaker 8: If you notice spots in your dishes, or if you
- 2:16:25Speaker 8: notice like a white crusty film around your faucets or
- 2:16:29Speaker 8: your refrigerator, or if you like are using a ton
- 2:16:33Speaker 8: of soap and nothing seems to be clean and your
- 2:16:35Speaker 8: laundry feels kind of starchy, then give us a call
- 2:16:38Speaker 8: because all of those are signs of bad water and
- 2:16:41Speaker 8: they're costly and repairs can be costly and they break
- 2:16:44Speaker 8: down your appliances and On soft water, you get 50%
- 2:16:48Speaker 8: longer lifespan on all water-using appliances. That can save you
- 2:16:52Speaker 8: a ton of money in the long run. And then
- 2:16:55Speaker 8: add in the fact that, again, you're never paying for
- 2:16:58Speaker 8: a repair on your water softener. You're never going to
- 2:17:00Speaker 8: pay for salt on your water softener. You're never going
- 2:17:02Speaker 8: to pay these crazy labor rates that it seems like
- 2:17:06Speaker 8: any time you want somebody to come out, it's $ 300.
- 2:17:09Speaker 8: It's all included in a low monthly subscription fee.
- 2:17:15Speaker 4: 801-509-9602. CulliganSLC.com. Make the phone call. Make the appointment. Tell
- 2:17:21Speaker 4: them you heard about it on ESPN 700 and the
- 2:17:24Speaker 4: Sean O'Connell Show. They're hooking us up. They're hooking you up.
- 2:17:27Speaker 4: They will take extra special care of you. The subscription
- 2:17:30Speaker 4: program reduces that upfront cost. You don't have to buy
- 2:17:34Speaker 4: all the new equipment. You're in a partnership with Culligan
- 2:17:36Speaker 4: now for better water in your home. Filtered water, softened water.
- 2:17:41Speaker 4: whole home filtration. And look, not every home is going
- 2:17:45Speaker 4: to need all the same things. Just trust these guys.
- 2:17:48Speaker 4: They've done it all because... 90 years, is that right?
- 2:17:50Speaker 9: 90 years.
- 2:17:51Speaker 4: 90 years of business in Salt Lake City?
- 2:17:53Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:17:53Speaker 8: And to what Kent said earlier, we've invested in the
- 2:17:57Speaker 8: R & D and the technology to really make sure
- 2:17:59Speaker 8: that we not only treat your current water conditions, but
- 2:18:03Speaker 8: water conditions that can happen in the future. There are
- 2:18:05Speaker 8: a lot of emerging contaminants. There's a lot of changes happening.
- 2:18:08Speaker 8: the municipalities and what's going on with the growth of
- 2:18:11Speaker 8: our community. And these systems are designed to make sure
- 2:18:14Speaker 8: that you're at the forefront, making sure that you're protected
- 2:18:19Speaker 8: and that your family's safe from any waterborne contaminant that
- 2:18:22Speaker 8: could make its way into your home.
- 2:18:25Speaker 4: 801-509-9602. CulliganSLC.com. Thanks for being here today, guys.
- 2:18:31Speaker 3: Appreciate it.
- 2:18:32Speaker 9: Thank you.
- 2:18:34Speaker 4: All right, one more break. We'll give away a pair
- 2:18:36Speaker 4: of tickets to Five Finger Death Punch coming on September
- 2:18:39Speaker 4: 22nd to the Utah First Credit Union Amphitheater.
- 2:18:42Speaker 3: I've got a trivia question for you.
- 2:18:44Speaker 4: It's ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:18:47Speaker 5: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show, your source for
- 2:18:51Speaker 5: the best youth football coverage.
- 2:18:53Speaker 3: Here's O.C.
- 2:18:53Speaker 5: From the Murdoch Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:19:02Speaker 4: Two tickets to Five Finger Death Punch, September 22nd at
- 2:19:05Speaker 4: the Utah First Credit Union Amphitheater. If you could tell me,
- 2:19:10Speaker 4: Utah beat Arkansas 43-10. Last year, one of the first
- 2:19:17Speaker 4: two games of the season also ended 43-10. Who did
- 2:19:20Speaker 4: Utah beat by that score in the 2025 season? 877-353-0700
- 2:19:21Speaker 4: if you know the answer to that question. I wonder
- 2:19:31Speaker 4: how many times that has happened in Utah football history
- 2:19:34Speaker 4: where you have back-to-back years with identical scores in very
- 2:19:39Speaker 4: similar games.
- 2:19:41Speaker 6: 877-353-0700.
- 2:19:41Speaker 4: If you could tell me who Utah beat 43-10 last year,
- 2:19:48Speaker 4: same final score as Utah versus Arkansas in a very
- 2:19:51Speaker 4: similar situation. Two tickets to five-finger death punch. at the
- 2:19:59Speaker 4: Utah First Credit Union Amphitheater if you have that answer.
- 2:20:03Speaker 4: Final segment of the show brought to you by our
- 2:20:04Speaker 4: friends at Advanced Window Products, 801-850-9100. For $ 2, 500 off 10
- 2:20:10Speaker 4: windows or more. I put a poll question out today.
- 2:20:17Speaker 4: Is Utah better than they were last year? Are they same-same?
- 2:20:22Speaker 4: Are they not as good? 61% of you think that
- 2:20:26Speaker 4: this Utah football team is better than last year's team.
- 2:20:30Speaker 4: That is saying a lot. That's a 10-2 football team
- 2:20:34Speaker 4: in the regular season. That's a bowl game winner. That
- 2:20:37Speaker 4: is an 11-win squad. With Morgan Scali coaching the bowl game, obviously,
- 2:20:42Speaker 4: as Kyle Whittingham decided he was moving on to the
- 2:20:45Speaker 4: University of Michigan. Only 13%, just shy of 13%, think
- 2:20:50Speaker 4: that this year's team is not as good as last year.
- 2:20:53Speaker 4: About 27% think that it's kind of apples to apples, same, same.
- 2:20:58Speaker 4: I think that the potency of the team, the ability
- 2:21:02Speaker 4: of the team, the final result of the team might
- 2:21:05Speaker 4: be kind of same, same. This is on a two-game
- 2:21:08Speaker 4: sample size. I'll ask the question again when we get
- 2:21:10Speaker 4: to game five or six and we know a little
- 2:21:12Speaker 4: bit more. Are they better than they were last year?
- 2:21:15Speaker 4: Are they the same as they were last year? Are
- 2:21:16Speaker 4: they not quite as good as they were last year?
- 2:21:18Speaker 4: 61% of you think that this is an improvement in
- 2:21:24Speaker 4: Morgan Scali's first year as a head coach over an
- 2:21:27Speaker 4: 11-win season. That is momentous and incredible if he can
- 2:21:32Speaker 4: pull it off. The other poll question out there, do
- 2:21:36Speaker 4: you believe Sam Levitt is truly doubtful for the Ole
- 2:21:39Speaker 4: Miss game as the LSU injury report suggests? 87% of
- 2:21:45Speaker 4: the respondents expressed doubt that Lane Kiffin is being honest
- 2:21:49Speaker 4: about that situation. People at Oxford, Mississippi think that he's lying.
- 2:21:58Speaker 4: People in Baton Rouge, Louisiana think that he's lying. People
- 2:22:02Speaker 4: here in Salt Lake City feel the same way. 877-353-0700
- 2:22:07Speaker 4: is how you always get a hold of us here
- 2:22:10Speaker 4: on the Sean O'Connell Show. We've got a fun one
- 2:22:12Speaker 4: lined up tomorrow. But before we get out of here,
- 2:22:14Speaker 4: the drive with Spence Checketts and the host, he's here
- 2:22:19Speaker 4: in our Broadway studios.
- 2:22:21Speaker 3: You have a court date? What's going on? What a
- 2:22:24Speaker 3: fair question.
- 2:22:25Speaker 9: No.
- 2:22:27Speaker 1: You look nice. My goal is to never have one
- 2:22:29Speaker 1: of those ever again.
- 2:22:29Speaker 3: Okay. On today's Thursday.
- 2:22:32Speaker 1: We record our talk and rail show for KMYU every
- 2:22:35Speaker 1: Thursday right before the show. So that's why I'm actually
- 2:22:38Speaker 1: dressed like an adult today.
- 2:22:39Speaker 9: Oh, okay.
- 2:22:40Speaker 1: Other than pajamas, which is, again, my favorite part of
- 2:22:42Speaker 1: our job.
- 2:22:44Speaker 4: We don't have to look good.
- 2:22:45Speaker 3: It's good to see you, man. It's been a while.
- 2:22:46Speaker 6: I know.
- 2:22:47Speaker 4: We've been ships passing in the night.
- 2:22:49Speaker 3: Which is good, right?
- 2:22:50Speaker 2: Remotes.
- 2:22:50Speaker 1: A really fun remote yesterday at the Red Zone store.
- 2:22:54Speaker 1: I guess it's the campus store now. For me, it
- 2:22:57Speaker 1: will always be the bookstore.
- 2:22:58Speaker 9: Okay.
- 2:22:58Speaker 3: I know it as the bookstore. It was the bookstore
- 2:23:00Speaker 3: in the 90s.
- 2:23:01Speaker 1: But I'll tell you what, they have up there, they
- 2:23:04Speaker 1: have the best ute gear. I think if we're honest,
- 2:23:08Speaker 1: sometimes the ute gear is like, yeah, we could do better.
- 2:23:11Speaker 1: But they've got some good stuff up there. Got myself
- 2:23:14Speaker 1: a sweatshirt.
- 2:23:14Speaker 4: Did you?
- 2:23:15Speaker 3: Nice little t-shirt.
- 2:23:16Speaker 9: Okay.
- 2:23:17Speaker 3: Where were you yesterday?
- 2:23:19Speaker 4: I was at All Trade Staffing yesterday.
- 2:23:21Speaker 6: Okay.
- 2:23:21Speaker 3: Very nice.
- 2:23:22Speaker 10: Very nice.
- 2:23:22Speaker 1: Obviously, with football back, business is better for all of us.
- 2:23:26Speaker 12: Yes.
- 2:23:27Speaker 1: As I often say, two seasons in American sports now.
- 2:23:31Speaker 1: football season and waiting and waiting for football season.
- 2:23:35Speaker 3: Uh, but here we are.
- 2:23:36Speaker 1: I've been able to catch bits and pieces of your show.
- 2:23:38Speaker 1: Good job with Devin today. We'll bring that back today
- 2:23:40Speaker 1: on the program. Ron McBride live in studio. Oh, the
- 2:23:43Speaker 1: legend himself. So that'll come your way. He's the best
- 2:23:47Speaker 1: in about 30 minutes from now ish. But I wanted
- 2:23:51Speaker 1: to ask you bottom line, like in the conversation about
- 2:23:54Speaker 1: the football team right now, the undercurrent is like, I
- 2:23:58Speaker 1: think Arkansas sucks.
- 2:23:59Speaker 9: Yes.
- 2:24:00Speaker 3: Idaho, you know, is what it is.
- 2:24:03Speaker 1: How much of what you're seeing is something that will
- 2:24:06Speaker 1: sustain itself throughout the season when the competition gets better?
- 2:24:08Speaker 4: Well, I put a poll question out based on this
- 2:24:10Speaker 4: exact thing. Like, what do we know right now? And
- 2:24:13Speaker 4: I said, is this year's team better than last year's team?
- 2:24:16Speaker 4: Same as last year's team are not quite as good.
- 2:24:19Speaker 4: And we have very similar, like good analogous competition from
- 2:24:23Speaker 4: the first two games last year.
- 2:24:25Speaker 9: Yeah. Right.
- 2:24:25Speaker 12: For sure.
- 2:24:26Speaker 4: Get a 43, 10 win over UCLA, uh, a 43,
- 2:24:30Speaker 4: 10 win over Arkansas. You had 60 plus points against
- 2:24:34Speaker 4: an FCT, FCS team, 60 plus points against an FCS team.
- 2:24:39Speaker 4: And if you look at the numbers and you look
- 2:24:41Speaker 4: at a little bit of the film, uh, it kind
- 2:24:43Speaker 4: of comes out to, well, the defense probably not quite
- 2:24:47Speaker 4: as strong as of yet. And the offense shockingly, amazingly,
- 2:24:52Speaker 4: maybe even stronger than they were last year, which was
- 2:24:55Speaker 4: a big deal for Utah.
- 2:24:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:24:58Speaker 4: We're not accustomed to having a top-five running game. We're
- 2:25:01Speaker 4: not accustomed to having a top-20 offense on the Hill,
- 2:25:04Speaker 4: and that's what you had last year. And if you're
- 2:25:07Speaker 4: getting more of that and maybe even an improvement on
- 2:25:09Speaker 4: that in this 2026 season, I think it's reasonable to
- 2:25:13Speaker 4: expect similar results based on what we have seen so far.
- 2:25:16Speaker 4: And you might even expect better results because this year's schedule,
- 2:25:19Speaker 4: at least on paper, might be a little bit more friendly,
- 2:25:21Speaker 4: might be a little bit easier for you.
- 2:25:23Speaker 1: Yeah, the schedule's lining up. There's no doubt. I'm curious
- 2:25:27Speaker 1: to see what Friday night in Lubbock looks like. Texas
- 2:25:30Speaker 1: Tech has just been fine, right? They have not been dominant.
- 2:25:33Speaker 1: And Houston has looked really, really good. So that game,
- 2:25:37Speaker 1: I think, will give us a good idea of what
- 2:25:39Speaker 1: Utah's up against when Houston is here.
- 2:25:41Speaker 3: BYU, they're really, really good. They're tough.
- 2:25:44Speaker 1: So that's going to be a tough task no matter what.
- 2:25:47Speaker 1: But you do start to... see this thing manifesting in
- 2:25:50Speaker 1: a way where it's like, I said, to start the year,
- 2:25:53Speaker 1: I said, anything over eight wins, I will take because
- 2:25:56Speaker 1: it is the first year. But now I think we
- 2:25:59Speaker 1: can start getting a little bit greedy. And I always
- 2:26:01Speaker 1: say this during football season. I'm not one to dampen
- 2:26:04Speaker 1: excitement of fans. If you want to get weird, get weird.
- 2:26:06Speaker 1: It's the best thing about being a college football fan
- 2:26:08Speaker 1: right now. You're one of the many programs in the
- 2:26:11Speaker 1: country that has legitimate reason to hope Utah football has
- 2:26:14Speaker 1: caught the attention of people across the landscape of college
- 2:26:17Speaker 1: football media. And who cover the sport, not just locally.
- 2:26:20Speaker 1: You start to see 10, 11 wins. You start to
- 2:26:23Speaker 1: get a little bit weird about the potential of playing
- 2:26:25Speaker 1: for a Big 12 championship. And more than anything else,
- 2:26:28Speaker 1: I definitely wanted to kick the tires with you on
- 2:26:30Speaker 1: this today.
- 2:26:32Speaker 3: And I'll start here. Winning breeds joy.
- 2:26:35Speaker 12: Period.
- 2:26:35Speaker 3: End of story.
- 2:26:36Speaker 1: In this business, no matter what sport, no matter if
- 2:26:38Speaker 1: you're a fighter, if you're a football player, if you're
- 2:26:40Speaker 1: a golfer, a basketball player, you win.
- 2:26:43Speaker 3: It breeds joy.
- 2:26:44Speaker 6: Okay.
- 2:26:45Speaker 1: So what will this feel like if there's a tough loss,
- 2:26:47Speaker 1: an upset loss, or a close game against a bad team?
- 2:26:50Speaker 12: I don't know.
- 2:26:52Speaker 1: The way I've kind of characterized it over the past
- 2:26:55Speaker 1: week or so is I think playing for Kyle was
- 2:26:58Speaker 1: probably hard, and that's okay. And I'm not saying that
- 2:27:00Speaker 1: playing for Morgan is easy. But it does feel like
- 2:27:04Speaker 1: there's just a little bit more joy in that building.
- 2:27:06Speaker 1: I just think there's a little bit like relief where
- 2:27:10Speaker 1: all the things we heard about the end of Kyle's
- 2:27:12Speaker 1: tenure seem to be hard for people. And Morgan seems
- 2:27:15Speaker 1: to have kind of infused this thing with his energy
- 2:27:18Speaker 1: and his joy and kind of unbridled passion for the
- 2:27:20Speaker 1: sport and is balancing things really well so far.
- 2:27:22Speaker 4: So far, I think that's true. I think that's the sentiment,
- 2:27:26Speaker 4: you know, an accurate reflection of what we're hearing and
- 2:27:28Speaker 4: seeing from people. And look, the sustainability of that, to
- 2:27:31Speaker 4: be fair to everyone, including Kyle Whittingham, is the sustainability
- 2:27:36Speaker 4: of that is dependent on repeated success.
- 2:27:39Speaker 5: Right.
- 2:27:39Speaker 4: On how much you keep winning, because that's when people
- 2:27:42Speaker 4: start to slip. That's when people start to, well, you
- 2:27:45Speaker 4: know what? Why are we having so much fun? This
- 2:27:48Speaker 4: isn't for fun. We're here to win.
- 2:27:49Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 2:27:50Speaker 4: Right? I don't think you're going to get to that point.
- 2:27:52Speaker 4: I think that Morgan, like, he is a winner. That's
- 2:27:56Speaker 4: one thing about Morgan Scali is... You go back to
- 2:28:00Speaker 4: when he was a high school player. You go back to, like,
- 2:28:02Speaker 4: what he did in rugby. Look what he was at
- 2:28:06Speaker 4: the University of Utah himself.
- 2:28:08Speaker 3: He's a winner.
- 2:28:10Speaker 4: He knows the good stuff that he's been able to
- 2:28:13Speaker 4: glean from the previous regime and even the one before
- 2:28:15Speaker 4: that with Urban, right? And he knows the stuff that
- 2:28:18Speaker 4: he wants to tweak and maybe improve and make more
- 2:28:22Speaker 4: his tone of speech and enthusiasm and.
- 2:28:26Speaker 3: The dang music, whatever.
- 2:28:28Speaker 9: So.
- 2:28:29Speaker 4: It's all still being figured out. And it's a really
- 2:28:32Speaker 4: interesting matchup against Utah State because of Bronco. Because Bronco
- 2:28:36Speaker 4: Mendenhall knows this Utah football program. He knows Morgan Scali
- 2:28:40Speaker 4: very well. He's got assistants on his staff who've been
- 2:28:43Speaker 4: coaching against Utah for years.
- 2:28:46Speaker 3: And nobody knows.
- 2:28:50Speaker 4: Kevin McGiven as well as Bronco Mendenhall does.
- 2:28:52Speaker 1: That's the biggest dynamic, I think, right now. And to
- 2:28:55Speaker 1: your point, this is the honeymoon moment. This is you
- 2:28:59Speaker 1: meet a partner, and you think they're perfect, and you
- 2:29:03Speaker 1: live in bliss for a while, and then you walk
- 2:29:06Speaker 1: into her room, and she has Rob Thomas posters, and
- 2:29:08Speaker 1: she loves Matchbox 20. It's like, wait a second, what happened?
- 2:29:10Speaker 3: This is great. Please don't. Please don't. Please don't. Right now,
- 2:29:14Speaker 3: you can't tell.
- 2:29:15Speaker 1: We've got to take a break. We've got to take
- 2:29:17Speaker 1: a break. No, will we feel like this in five years?
- 2:29:22Speaker 12: Right?
- 2:29:22Speaker 1: Will we feel like this in five weeks? Yeah, so
- 2:29:25Speaker 1: right now... Number one, winning and winning big. Number two,
- 2:29:31Speaker 1: all the things you said about Morgan are absolutely on point.
- 2:29:34Speaker 1: And I will add to he knows what it means
- 2:29:36Speaker 1: to do that here. Like Ryan Silverfield probably can't go
- 2:29:41Speaker 1: to his house right now in Arkansas. You know, a
- 2:29:44Speaker 1: first year head coach that isn't a local guy did
- 2:29:47Speaker 1: a really good job of Memphis. But I'm telling you, man,
- 2:29:50Speaker 1: that was it. I hate this whole like, hey, they
- 2:29:53Speaker 1: beat an SEC team. Just because you play in the
- 2:29:55Speaker 1: SEC doesn't mean you might suck. Doesn't mean you might
- 2:29:58Speaker 1: not suck.
- 2:29:59Speaker 4: Yeah, no, they suck.
- 2:30:00Speaker 3: They're horrible.
- 2:30:01Speaker 4: They're bad.
- 2:30:01Speaker 3: Right?
- 2:30:02Speaker 1: But look, the bad news would be, because there are
- 2:30:06Speaker 1: plenty of teams across the landscape of college football that
- 2:30:08Speaker 1: have played teams that were thought to be bad and
- 2:30:10Speaker 1: didn't look great. Utah looked great, period. Because you're good
- 2:30:13Speaker 1: to bring up the UCLA game last year. I think
- 2:30:17Speaker 1: for the casual fan, they'll just say, oh, they smoked UCLA.
- 2:30:21Speaker 3: UCLA, blue blood program.
- 2:30:23Speaker 9: No, they're not.
- 2:30:24Speaker 1: They were awful a year ago, and that turned out
- 2:30:27Speaker 1: to be the case. So how much of this is sustainable?
- 2:30:30Speaker 1: How good is Houston?
- 2:30:31Speaker 3: How good is BYU?
- 2:30:33Speaker 1: The two toughest teams on the schedule. Will Arizona bounce
- 2:30:36Speaker 1: back and be the team a lot of people thought
- 2:30:37Speaker 1: they could be? But with Tech looking very pedestrian early on,
- 2:30:43Speaker 1: I think if you're a Utah fan, I think if
- 2:30:45Speaker 1: you're a BYU fan, there's no reason to not believe
- 2:30:47Speaker 1: your team has a chance to win the conference this year,
- 2:30:49Speaker 1: or at least play in that game.
- 2:30:51Speaker 4: I'm very curious if you end up, and you just
- 2:30:54Speaker 4: made this point, if like Utah State, this is a
- 2:30:57Speaker 4: Super Bowl for the Aggies.
- 2:30:58Speaker 9: Sure.
- 2:30:58Speaker 4: If Utah State comes down and it's a 24 to
- 2:31:03Speaker 4: 31 victory, right? You're not blowing them out. Devin's got
- 2:31:06Speaker 4: to play to the final snap, that kind of stuff.
- 2:31:10Speaker 4: Are you feeling the same way that you do now?
- 2:31:12Speaker 4: Are people starting to get, to lose confidence? If, you know,
- 2:31:16Speaker 4: Bronco Mendenhall knows some of the Kevin McGiven tendencies and
- 2:31:20Speaker 4: or some of the gadget stuff and the creative stuff
- 2:31:23Speaker 4: gets blown up, are you now starting to question whether
- 2:31:26Speaker 4: it's going to work for the rest of the year?
- 2:31:27Speaker 4: I mean, there's a reason why these two first games
- 2:31:31Speaker 4: are just that sample size. It's just enough for you
- 2:31:33Speaker 4: to get pumped up and excited. Beyond that, we still
- 2:31:37Speaker 4: don't know. It's going to take, like Morgan keeps telling us,
- 2:31:40Speaker 4: it's going to take four, five, six weeks before we
- 2:31:43Speaker 4: really have a sense of what this team is. All
- 2:31:45Speaker 4: you have right now is highlights.
- 2:31:48Speaker 3: That's it.
- 2:31:50Speaker 4: Nothing bad has happened yet.
- 2:31:51Speaker 9: Right.
- 2:31:52Speaker 4: Haven't really turned over the ball in any kind of
- 2:31:54Speaker 4: stupid way. The penalties have been manageable, all that kind
- 2:31:57Speaker 4: of stuff. You haven't faced real adversity yet. We learn
- 2:32:01Speaker 4: what this team is when they do that. I think
- 2:32:03Speaker 4: Utah State defensively might be good enough to show you
- 2:32:05Speaker 4: some of that. Offensively, they are bad.
- 2:32:08Speaker 1: Yeah, and look, these in-state games can get weird. After
- 2:32:12Speaker 1: watching Utah State go up to Seattle and nearly get
- 2:32:15Speaker 1: that done, my guess was, okay, that line's going to
- 2:32:18Speaker 1: open up at like 18 or 19.
- 2:32:20Speaker 3: It opens up at 28.5.
- 2:32:22Speaker 1: And my first reaction was, I wouldn't touch that line.
- 2:32:26Speaker 1: If you're into such things, I wouldn't touch it. Because
- 2:32:29Speaker 1: I wouldn't be shocked if Saturday turns into a 24-10
- 2:32:34Speaker 1: Utah win. It wouldn't shock me if that happens. Now,
- 2:32:38Speaker 1: do I hope they blow them out? For sure. Do
- 2:32:39Speaker 1: I hope what we've seen through the first two games
- 2:32:42Speaker 1: manifest through this in-state clash and throughout conference?
- 2:32:45Speaker 5: Absolutely.
- 2:32:46Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 2:32:47Speaker 1: We're starting to move from curiosity to conclusion, but I
- 2:32:50Speaker 1: still kind of exist in the space of ambiguity about
- 2:32:52Speaker 1: what I feel like I can definitively say.
- 2:32:54Speaker 3: About this team. Do you know what?
- 2:32:57Speaker 4: UCLA finished the season last year.
- 2:32:59Speaker 3: Not great, Bob.
- 2:33:01Speaker 4: Three and nine.
- 2:33:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:33:03Speaker 1: So we talked to you and I talked about it.
- 2:33:05Speaker 1: It's like, that's not a good football team.
- 2:33:07Speaker 4: This year and last year, your start has been almost
- 2:33:11Speaker 4: apples to apples. It's almost the exact same. I think
- 2:33:14Speaker 4: that's encouraging. especially given the schedule you've got this year.
- 2:33:18Speaker 4: Keep voting on the polls at Real OC Sports. Keep
- 2:33:20Speaker 4: texting at 877-353-0700. Keep listening to The Drive with Spence Checkins.
- 2:33:27Speaker 4: We'll do the Sean O'Connell show again tomorrow. I hope
- 2:33:29Speaker 4: you have your grievances ready on a Friday, because I do.
- 2:33:31Speaker 4: CSPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
