- 1:45directly. This week's Yellowstone news! Biggest
- 1:49news right now in the park is the opening of
- 1:51some of the park roads. Starting on April 18th,
- 1:53the West Yellowstone entrance to the park will
- 1:55reopen to personal vehicles for the first time
- 1:58in 2025. The road from Mammoth to Madison Junction
- 2:01will also be opening up, as well as the road
- 2:04from Norris to Canyon. The stretch from Madison
- 2:06to Old Faithful will also reopen on the 18th.
- 2:10So what does this mean exactly? It means that
- 2:12starting on the 18th of April, you can now drive
- 2:15from Gardner West Yellowstone and reach Canyon,
- 2:18Norris, Old Faithful, and Lamar Valley. It means
- 2:21you can go see the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
- 2:23River, watch Old Faithful erupt, see the thermal
- 2:26features of the park, and scan for wildlife and
- 2:28spots previously hidden from the average visitor.
- 2:31It also means that traffic in popular spots will
- 2:33increase and wildlife delays will be more frequent.
- 2:37The next sections of road to open will occur
- 2:40on May 2nd, connecting Canyon to Fishing Bridge
- 2:42and the east entrance. Until then, there is no
- 2:46access to the east entrance or Hayden Valley.
- 2:48The south entrance will not be opening until
- 2:50May 9th. May 9th is also the time that the road
- 2:53to Tower Falls is open, and then the entirety
- 2:56of Dunraven Pass will not be opening until May
- 2:5923rd. There is some news about visitation. I
- 3:03will be covering that. I realized I missed February
- 3:06visitation. No one reached out to tell me that
- 3:08they missed it. So probably won't do February
- 3:11visitation since we're already in April, but
- 3:15I will do March in a couple of days. So that's
- 3:19all the news that I feel like covering right
- 3:21now. There's nothing really too big. There will
- 3:23be probably more next week. So this week's random
- 3:28Yellowstone tidbit. Today I'm going to briefly
- 3:31talk about the old opening day. While we're currently
- 3:34celebrating the opening of the park for the year,
- 3:36things weren't always like this. In 1925, 100
- 3:40years ago, the park opened for vehicles on June
- 3:4318th, two days earlier than in 1924. From a 1925
- 3:48guidebook to the park, this is what they wrote
- 3:51about the tourist season. The tourist season
- 3:54extends from June 20th to September 15th. This
- 3:58means that tourists may enter the park for a
- 4:01complete tour on and between these dates. The
- 4:04park utilities, therefore, are actually operated
- 4:07from June 20th to September 20th. After the latter
- 4:12date, admittance is granted to only the tourists
- 4:15who come equipped to camp out along the roads
- 4:18or trails. So this is something that I absolutely
- 4:22love. That short season right that is something
- 4:26we don't have now part of the park is open and
- 4:29I don't know if we could have towns like West
- 4:32Yellowstone or even Cody Thrive the way that
- 4:35they do if the only time people could visit was
- 4:37from June to September I know a lot of you saying
- 4:40but that's the biggest visitation time of the
- 4:42year true But those shoulder seasons would still
- 4:45open really are what make or break the communities
- 4:48that rely on tourism I found an old thing online.
- 4:56I'm sorry. I'm pulling that up. I'm very professional
- 4:58today Not that it matters, but we just got a
- 5:01puppy. So my brain is not exactly Great right
- 5:06now. So I pulled up a Old article from the Bozeman
- 5:11newspaper that has a picture of a bunch of cars
- 5:14and people all dressed up It'll be the cover
- 5:17image for this and this is the caption for this
- 5:19picture Yellowstone National Park opened on June
- 5:2218th this year, two days earlier than ever before,
- 5:25to accommodate the tourist hundreds already in
- 5:28the West who desired to begin their trips through
- 5:30this wonderland as early as possible. Superintendent
- 5:34Horace M. Albright, in a communication to A .B.
- 5:37Smith, passenger traffic manager of the Northern
- 5:40Pacific Railway, stated that both geysers and
- 5:43bears are more playful than ever. Mr. Smith said
- 5:46that the volume of inquiries from prospective
- 5:49travelers indicates a big tourist season. Conservative
- 5:52estimates placed the total number of Yellowstone
- 5:56visitors at 180 ,000 this year against 144 ,000
- 6:01in 1924. The upper picture shows a mother bear
- 6:06and her two cubs welcoming one of the first motor
- 6:09parties over Yellowstone trails this year Lower
- 6:12picture is of the first party of tourists to
- 6:14leave Gardiner Gateway for the tour of the park
- 6:17So you heard that right that the Bears were out
- 6:21celebrating the opening day ceremonies obviously
- 6:24used to be big and In case you were curious how
- 6:28many people actually visited Yellowstone in 1925,
- 6:31the total was 154 ,282. That's roughly one -ninth
- 6:37of the total number of visitors that came to
- 6:40Yellowstone in June of 2024. We certainly have
- 6:44come a long way since waiting and seen only 154
- 6:47,000 visitors all year. But there is something
- 6:50kind of fun to think back on those days where
- 6:53the opening ceremonies were a big deal and people
- 6:55in cars and horses lined up in the gateway towns
- 6:58of West and Gardiner waiting to enter the park
- 7:00on that first day. Now we kind of have the same,
- 7:03but it's not quite there. All right. Experience
- 7:07of the week. Right now, picking the perfect experience
- 7:10to have when visiting Yellowstone, it's next
- 7:12to impossible. The roads are opening, so you
- 7:14can kinda do anything. You can go watch Old Faithful,
- 7:17you can wander the Geyser Basin, and experience
- 7:19Grand Prismatic, mostly alone. You can see the
- 7:22Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River, and come
- 7:24across wildlife of all shapes and sizes. You
- 7:26can go up to Little America and Lamar, and see
- 7:29bears and wolves. Now the road's open, the world
- 7:32of Yellowstone is your oyster, and hopefully
- 7:34you aren't allergic to shellfish. Therefore,
- 7:38the experience of the week I'm recommending is
- 7:40to drive to both Old Faithful and Canyon. I know
- 7:43it's a basic thing to recommend, but if you're
- 7:45like me, it's been a long time since you've had
- 7:47a chance to see the majesty and beauty of these
- 7:49regions. Not only will you have an opportunity
- 7:51to see a few of the sites that helped create
- 7:54the National Park, but you'll also be doing so
- 7:56when relatively few people will be around. I
- 7:59can't promise you'll be alone at either place,
- 8:01especially on a weekend, but it will feel empty
- 8:04if you visited the areas during the summer. Please
- 8:07be aware that the paths around the canyon will
- 8:09not be snow -free. The upper overlook where you
- 8:12walk up to the stairs at artist point will not
- 8:14be open, but the lower one will be. You'll get
- 8:17to see the falls in the distance surrounded by
- 8:19ice and snow encapsulating just how frigid of
- 8:21a winter we have had. The paths around Old Faithful
- 8:24look to be in decent shape and better than Canyon
- 8:26and are mostly melted out as far as what I can
- 8:30see on the webcam. You shouldn't need traction
- 8:32devices to walk around, but having them with
- 8:35you just in case isn't going to hurt anything
- 8:37and it may make your trip a lot better. My tip
- 8:40of the week. Help make Yellowstone safe for humans
- 8:43and wildlife. Now that the roads are opening
- 8:46and some more visitors are heading to the park,
- 8:49it's time to review some basics about wildlife
- 8:51watching. Now, before I go on this mini tirade,
- 8:55I do want to share something important. I may
- 8:58be alone in this thought, but I believe that
- 9:00park behavior has never been better in Yellowstone.
- 9:04Why do I say this? In 2024, Yellowstone saw 4
- 9:08.74 million visitors. I'll conservatively say
- 9:13that 99 % of those visitors were on their best
- 9:15behavior, or at least good behavior. If that's
- 9:19true, that means that 47 ,400 people were breaking
- 9:23the rules. That would be 129 people a day, every
- 9:28day, in 2024. That number seems too high to me,
- 9:32especially if the trouble we are talking about
- 9:34is going off the boardwalks and or approaching
- 9:37wildlife. If you want to throw in speeding, drunk
- 9:39driving, drug use, things like that, then maybe
- 9:42that's going to be a little more accurate. But
- 9:45that's not what people talk about when they talk
- 9:46about poor park behavior. They talk about going
- 9:49off boardwalks and approaching wildlife. Realistically,
- 9:53less than 1 % of park visitors are causing any
- 9:56trouble. That is amazing. And that means that
- 10:0099 % of the people or more are doing a fantastic
- 10:04job. So that being said, issues in poor park
- 10:08behavior still exist. So what do you do when
- 10:11you encounter poor behavior? If you see someone
- 10:14breaking the rules, do the following. First,
- 10:17be polite, calm and patient and remind the person
- 10:21of the park rules and see if you can have them
- 10:23return to a safe distance. I know the easy thing
- 10:28to do is to yell but one thing that I've learned
- 10:31from all of my years here is if you see somebody
- 10:34starting to do something just just talk to them
- 10:38and be like oh hey this is an exciting day isn't
- 10:40it and just talk to them normal and be like oh
- 10:42you know we are supposed to stay back a little
- 10:44bit like you know I don't want you to ruin your
- 10:47trip by getting a big ticket or potentially being
- 10:49banned from the park like why don't we why don't
- 10:51we come stand over here Obviously that's not
- 10:53in everyone's wheelhouse to do it's a conversation
- 10:56So if you can't do any of that if you can't be
- 11:00polite calm and patient Then do the following
- 11:05take a picture of the people and the car that
- 11:08they're in and get the license plate of the vehicle
- 11:11Immediately report them to a Ranger the Rangers
- 11:14will do their best to track them down and do
- 11:16what they feel is a right punishment as always
- 11:20Always stay within 100 yards of wolves and bears
- 11:23when outside of vehicles. Even if there is a
- 11:26crowd of people closer, do not join them unless
- 11:29there is a ranger present telling you it's okay.
- 11:33For bison, elk, and all other animals, always
- 11:35stay 25 yards from them when not in a vehicle.
- 11:39If an animal approaches you while you're on a
- 11:41trail or outside at a pullout, you still must
- 11:44maintain the appropriate distance at all times.
- 11:47Do not let animals walk up to you. I've seen
- 11:50this time and time again. Don't do that. If an
- 11:53animal is blocking the trail, wait for it to
- 11:56move or hike off trail far away from it. Be smart,
- 12:01be safe, be ready for whatever the park decides
- 12:04to throw at you. Here's what not to do when you
- 12:06see someone breaking rules. Do not film the perpetrators
- 12:10from a distance and later share them with a certain
- 12:12social media account so they can shame the visitors
- 12:15later. Those sites are the absolute worst and
- 12:18do nothing but create a spiral of negativity
- 12:21and toxicity based on an untrue reality. Yes,
- 12:25people will break the rules this year. Someone
- 12:27will more than likely get gored by a bison. Someone
- 12:31will leave the boardwalks and walk in a geothermal
- 12:34area. People will break the rules. But, and there's
- 12:38always a but, as I started this section off with,
- 12:42facts matter. Over 99 % of Yellowstone National
- 12:45Park visitors are amazing and follow the rules
- 12:48and regulations. If you see somebody breaking
- 12:50the rules, document it and report it to a ranger.
- 12:54The rangers will take care of things, social
- 12:56media won't. Alright, the weather for the coming
- 13:00week. Starting with Lamar Valley on Thursday,
- 13:04Lamar Valley will have a high of 30 degrees and
- 13:07a low of 14 and receive potentially an inch of
- 13:09snow after three inches of snow on Wednesday.
- 13:13Friday and Saturday look to be a bit sunnier
- 13:16high on Friday 37 low at 10 Saturday 48 and 27
- 13:20Sunday will be 47 and 28 with a chance of an
- 13:24inch of snow Monday will be 45 and 19 with a
- 13:28chance of half an inch of snow or less Tuesday
- 13:31will be partly sunny 47 and 24 and Wednesday
- 13:35will be 51 and 25 with a slight chance of snow
- 13:39showers here and there in Cook City Expect a
- 13:43high of just 25 degrees and a low of 11 on Thursday.
- 13:47It will snow 4 inches on Wednesday night and
- 13:51another inch on Thursday. Friday and Saturday
- 13:53will be sunny. Friday is going to be the coldest
- 13:56day with a high of 31, low of 8. Saturday will
- 13:59be 43 and 25. Sunday will be 43 and 25 with an
- 14:03inch of snow. Monday will be 40 and 18 with half
- 14:07an inch of snow. Tuesday will be 42 and 22 and
- 14:10partly sunny and Wednesday will be 46 and 24
- 14:14with a slight chance of snow. West Yellowstone,
- 14:17yeah, I'm adding West finally. West Yellowstone
- 14:20is going to get about an inch of snow Wednesday
- 14:22night into Thursday. Thursday could see less
- 14:25than a half inch of snow, high of 31, low of
- 14:2816. Friday and Saturday will be partly sunny.
- 14:32High of 39, low of 13 on Friday. High of 48 and
- 14:3627 on Saturday. Sunday and Monday, expect a high
- 14:39of 47, a low in the 20s with a chance of rain
- 14:42or snow. Tuesday will return to partly sunny
- 14:45with 49 and 25, and Wednesday will be 52 and
- 14:4926. Then that brings us to Gardner, which will
- 14:54be similar. Expect an inch of snow over Wednesday
- 14:58night into Thursday. Then maybe a half inch on
- 15:01Thursday with a high of 34, low of 21. Friday
- 15:04and Saturday going to be partly sunny. High of
- 15:0741, low of 17 on Friday. High of 53, low of 32
- 15:12on Saturday. Then a chance of rain on Sunday
- 15:15and Monday with high of right around 50 and a
- 15:19low right around 27, 28 for both days. Then Tuesday,
- 15:23high of 51, low of 29, partly sunny. And Wednesday
- 15:26will be rainy with a high of 53. and low of 31.
- 15:31The snowpack update. The snowpack for most of
- 15:34the park is still in the 90 % of normal range
- 15:37and should stay that way through this week. The
- 15:39lowest snowpack total as of Tuesday, April 15th,
- 15:43is 88 % of normal out by the east entrance. While
- 15:46snow is in the forecast, it's nearly always in
- 15:49the forecast this time of year, so it's pretty
- 15:51normal, and snowpack numbers shouldn't jump much
- 15:54higher or drop too low. The road conditions.
- 15:58So obviously that Thursday morning will be a
- 16:01little snowy. Could have some snow over the weekend,
- 16:05especially in the higher elevation sections.
- 16:08But in lowlands, there's not going to be a lot
- 16:11of precipitation in the forecast, so it could
- 16:13just be a dusting. However, expect things to
- 16:17change. We can't really predict these storms
- 16:19too well in the park interior, so be ready for
- 16:22heavier snow just in case. For up -to -date information
- 16:25on the roads, you can call area code 307 -344
- 16:29-2117 for recorded information, or you can sign
- 16:33up to receive Yellowstone Road Alerts on your
- 16:36mobile phone by texting 82190 to the number 888
- 16:42-777. Okay, camping information! Mammoth Hot
- 16:47Springs remains the only open campground in the
- 16:49park and will be the only open campground in
- 16:51the park until May. However, additional camping
- 16:54options are available and will continue to open
- 16:57up outside the park. If you need somewhere to
- 16:59camp, reach out and I can share a few spots that
- 17:02I know. The wildlife watching update. So obviously
- 17:06I can only talk about the parts of the road that
- 17:09are open right now as I haven't been able to
- 17:11get into the interior so I don't know what anybody
- 17:14has been seen down around Old Faithful. For that
- 17:17I apologize and I you know I don't need to apologize
- 17:21but I like to know things and I like to share
- 17:23it so I'll have a lot more information next week.
- 17:26about the interior wildlife sightings but for
- 17:28now this is still going to be the northern range
- 17:31between mammoth and cook city so bears are active
- 17:35there have been bear jams around um all over
- 17:39there have been some black bears some grizzlies
- 17:41if you go out by blacktail ponds there are some
- 17:46there's a bison that fell through the ice and
- 17:48there's been coyotes trying to pull at it that
- 17:51means bears are going to come potentially wolves
- 17:53um Wolves have really been still out by Slough
- 17:56Creek this week and I would expect that to remain
- 18:00the case. Otherwise just keep driving back and
- 18:02forth and looking to see what's there. However
- 18:05I think most of you if you are visiting the park
- 18:08Probably going to just head out and go down to
- 18:11Old Faithful and Canyon. There is a good chance
- 18:14I know that there have been grizzlies walking
- 18:16around Old Faithful and also people have been
- 18:18hearing wolves howling out there. Some of the
- 18:20people that I know that work and live out there
- 18:22have been talking about it online. So head down
- 18:26there, see what you see, but if you want some
- 18:29more reliable wildlife sightings, obviously head
- 18:32north and go out. Just drive from Mammoth to
- 18:36Cook City and back. You'll probably see a couple
- 18:38of moose. There's been some active foxes. A lot
- 18:40of coyotes, like I said. Big horn sheep here
- 18:43and there, but generally things are just waking
- 18:45up and keep your eyes peeled for more baby animals
- 18:49because it's going to be that time. Oh, another
- 18:51update on the bear den that is by the petrified
- 18:55tree. Sow has been coming out with the cubs a
- 18:59little more We shall see if that continues with
- 19:02this colder wetter weather It has been really
- 19:04sunny and warm this last week. So things are
- 19:06a little more active, but we'll see what happens
- 19:09Until then if you love what you've heard on this
- 19:12podcast and want more information on wildlife
- 19:14watching Consider getting a copy of my wildlife
- 19:16watching guidebook to the region It's available
- 19:19in both ebook and paperback formats and this
- 19:22book is designed to help you spot wildlife like
- 19:24a season local If you do want a copy of my book
- 19:27Please consider buying a book directly from me
- 19:30as I make nothing when they're sold on Amazon
- 19:32and billionaires make money if they're sold on
- 19:34Amazon I don't think billionaires need more money
- 19:37But I think the rest of us do so if you'd like
- 19:41to purchase a book grab your copy now at outdoor
- 19:43-society .com Alright, so hiking news and updates
- 19:48This week's hiking conditions are going to be
- 19:50all over the place. I won't know the true conditions
- 19:52until I get into the interior, but this is what
- 19:55I can safely say. South -facing trails, especially
- 19:58in the northern range, will be decently melted
- 20:00out, and some of the boardwalks around Old Faithful
- 20:03should be snow -free. Expect snow on the paths
- 20:06at Norris, the Grand Canada Yellowstone, and
- 20:09pretty much everywhere else in the interior.
- 20:11If places are melted out, expect mud, especially
- 20:14if it's going to be wet like the forecast says.
- 20:18my truck of the week. So I was going to recommend
- 20:21the path to Grand Prismatic Overlook this week,
- 20:24but I'm anticipating a few things that will make
- 20:26it not ideal for right now. The first is the
- 20:29amount of snow at the Overlook. It may not be
- 20:32open because the snow is going to be too deep.
- 20:35I don't know. We won't know until we can drive
- 20:38by. The park hasn't really updated anything with
- 20:40that, and I don't want to tell you to go somewhere
- 20:42that's not open. Also, It's going to be pretty
- 20:45chilly and therefore it'll be pretty steamy,
- 20:48putting a damper on having that kind of iconic
- 20:50view where you can really look into the pool.
- 20:52Instead, I'm recommending a trek that few ever
- 20:55do, as it's a road that most will drive later
- 20:58in the year. The trek is the Firehole Canyon
- 21:00Road. While you can hike it from either side,
- 21:04I tend to start on the southern end and hike
- 21:07up, as this starting point is ridiculously scenic.
- 21:11Plus, there's a pullout right nearby, so you're
- 21:14not going to be parking anywhere sketchy, so
- 21:16I highly recommend starting on the southern end
- 21:19of it. The Firehole Canyon Drive is two miles
- 21:21one way and will have you walking on a canyon
- 21:24rim, seeing waterfalls, narrow canyons, and an
- 21:27osprey nest, and so much more. Being a closed
- 21:30road, this path is graded nicely, and it's easy
- 21:33to walk, even if you need to do it in snowshoes.
- 21:36And you may need them. Again, don't know the
- 21:38conditions of it yet, so be ready. You also may
- 21:42not need them. So I called the park and asked
- 21:44about the conditions and didn't hear back So
- 21:47I did what I could guys. Sorry Even if you just
- 21:51walk from the southern end of the road to the
- 21:53swimming area, which is less than a mile each
- 21:55way You'll have a unique experience in this region
- 21:58and gain a new appreciation for the Firehole
- 22:00River This is a small trek. I do pretty much
- 22:03every year and is one I'm excited to return to
- 22:06if you do the whole thing all four miles You'll
- 22:10truly love it and I know that you'll come away
- 22:12from the experience happy you did so. At the
- 22:15southern end of the road, take some time and
- 22:18adventure around the rocks to the west. So if
- 22:20you're at the pullout, just walk toward the river.
- 22:24The wide river narrows right at the pullout and
- 22:27it's been carved in a truly gorgeous canyon.
- 22:31There's rocks that are all pointy. It's spectacular.
- 22:35It's a place I stop at Really often when I'm
- 22:37in that region of the park pretty much every
- 22:39time I'm down there I'll stop at this pullout
- 22:42and go stand by the river and I think you'll
- 22:44enjoy it and I hope you do that, too All right,
- 22:48that's the end of this episode. So in next week's
- 22:50episode I'll be giving you a much more detailed
- 22:53report about what the park's interior looks like
- 22:56share some new tours I have for the summer give
- 22:58yet another perfect for the week hike and provide
- 23:01everything else You've come to expect when you
- 23:03listen to this week in Yellowstone Until then,
- 23:07happy trails!
