- 0:00Hey y'all, it's friendly. Welcome back to another episode
- 0:04on In the Stillness. Thanks for joining me this
- 0:07morning. Today we are starting a new
- 0:10book. We're starting Second
- 0:11Thessalonians, which I'm really excited about because it
- 0:15continues the combo that we've been having throughout First
- 0:18Thessalonians. This second letter, it was
- 0:21written by Paul only a few months after the first one,
- 0:25while he was still in Corinth. But the reason that he wrote
- 0:29this one is really important. Persecution against Christians
- 0:33in Thessalonica had gone up. And because Paul had previously
- 0:39taught about Jesus's return and how hardship would grow before
- 0:43that day, some believers in this church, they started to assume
- 0:47that Jesus's return was happening almost immediately,
- 0:52and instead of producing a faithful urgency, it actually
- 0:56started producing disorder in the church.
- 0:59Some believers became idle and lazy.
- 1:02They stopped engaging in normal responsibilities and daily
- 1:06rhythms because they thought, well, if Jesus is coming at any
- 1:11minute, why even bother? So Paul writes the second letter
- 1:16to correct misconceptions about Christ's return while also
- 1:20encouraging them to stay strong in their faith.
- 1:23So with that, I'm going to go ahead and read through the
- 1:26verses for today. We are going to be in chapter 1,
- 1:30verses one through 4, Paul, Silas, and Timothy to the Church
- 1:36of the Thessalonians and God our Father and the Lord Jesus
- 1:40Christ. Grace and peace to you from God
- 1:43the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 1:47We ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters, and
- 1:51rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more and the
- 1:56love all of you have for one another is increasing.
- 1:59Therefore, among God's churches, we boast about your perseverance
- 2:05and faith in all the persecutions and trials that you
- 2:08were enduring. Now, first of all, what really
- 2:13struck me while studying this passage is the contrast between
- 2:17then and now. Back then, believers were so
- 2:20convinced that Jesus could return immediately that some of
- 2:24them stopped working and they lost structure in their lives.
- 2:29But then Fast forward to today, almost 2000 years later, when
- 2:33even more prophecies have been fulfilled pointing toward
- 2:37Jesus's return. Many people live like we have
- 2:40plenty of time. Now I know this is not all
- 2:44inclusive, this is not everybody in the church, but it almost
- 2:48feels like the opposite swing of the pendulum.
- 2:51The Thessalonians, they lived like Jesus was returning
- 2:55tomorrow, but today a lot of people live like he may never
- 3:00return at all, or that we have so much time.
- 3:04And the truth is, the Christian life, it's meant to live in the
- 3:09tension between those two concepts.
- 3:12We're to live like Christ could return at any moment, while also
- 3:16faithfully persevering until he does so.
- 3:20Whether that's tomorrow or whether that's another 2000
- 3:23years from now, we still have a mission to fulfill.
- 3:28We see in Galatians 69 that we are commanded to not grow weary
- 3:33in doing good, but in due time we will reap a harvest if we
- 3:37don't give up. And last night before bed I
- 3:42prayed and asked the Lord to just open up my Bible to
- 3:45whatever He wanted me to hear, and I ended up opening to the
- 3:49very first chapter of Acts. It makes so much sense why the
- 3:54Lord had me open up to that exact passage last night because
- 3:59it aligned so perfectly to what I was in this morning.
- 4:03Acts chapter 1 verses 7 through 8 says it is not for you to know
- 4:07the times or dates the Father has set by His own authority,
- 4:11but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you,
- 4:16and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and
- 4:20Samaria into the ends of the earth.
- 4:23That is the Great Commission and honestly, I love how God does
- 4:28that sometimes, how He'll highlight something in His Word
- 4:31before we even realize why we needed to see it.
- 4:34Like last night to this morning, it is God's timetable, not ours.
- 4:41So getting into the section today, we're looking at the
- 4:46passage titled Thanksgiving and Prayer.
- 4:49And I love this because Paul's life is one of praise unto the
- 4:54Lord. He doesn't just write about
- 4:56rejoicing and praying and giving thanks like we saw in First
- 5:01Thessalonians chapter 5, verses 16 through 17.
- 5:04He actually lives it out. Paul is not just preaching this.
- 5:09He's modeling it for the church and for us today.
- 5:12What's especially interesting is that this letter is partly
- 5:16written to correct misunderstandings in the church.
- 5:20But even with that intention and purpose, Paul begins with
- 5:24encouragement. He doesn't open the letter by
- 5:27pointing out everything that they're doing wrong.
- 5:30Instead, he first reminds them of what they're doing right.
- 5:33Not a do this better, but good job with this.
- 5:37It's more like you're doing this so well.
- 5:40Let's continue growing in this aspect.
- 5:44And honestly, that's such a helpful model for how we can
- 5:48approach conflict or correction with others or in our own lives.
- 5:53Paula actively looks for ways to affirm believers in their
- 5:57strengths, in their gifts and callings, which led me to ask
- 6:01myself this question while I was studying this passage.
- 6:04What if I became more intentional about pointing out
- 6:07others strengths rather than only noticing their flaws or
- 6:11what they're lacking? Let's ask God to give us eyes to
- 6:15see people the way that He sees them, to show us how to build
- 6:20them up. Because encouraging others
- 6:23actually reflects security in Christ.
- 6:27You see, Paul is so confident in his identity in Jesus that he
- 6:31delights in reminding others of their identity in Christ too.
- 6:36As believers, we are all a part of the same family.
- 6:41He calls us brothers and sisters.
- 6:43We are one team unified in Christ Jesus.
- 6:50Honestly, I originally planned to read through a larger section
- 6:54of today. I wanted to kind of go through
- 6:56more verses, but I felt the Lord slow me down to really sit with
- 7:01a few of the ideas that Paul brings up here.
- 7:04So here are a few heart check questions that I wrote down for
- 7:07myself that y'all can reflect on too.
- 7:11First of all, is your faith growing more?
- 7:14Not just staying stagnant, but actually growing?
- 7:18Do you wake up believing that God still has more to reveal to
- 7:22you, more to teach you, more work to do in you and through
- 7:27your life? Secondly, is your love for
- 7:31others growing more? Paul actually prayed this exact
- 7:35thing earlier in his first letter to the Thessalonians,
- 7:38chapter 3, verse 12. That their love would increase
- 7:42and overflow, that it would abound.
- 7:45And here's the personal question that I had to ask myself.
- 7:49Do I have a greater desire to spend time with God and to love
- 7:53and service people well today than I did a month ago or even a
- 7:57year ago? And if not, it's worth asking
- 8:01why? Are there distractions keeping
- 8:04your faith from growing? Maybe it is a rigid packed
- 8:09schedule, or certain influences or people in your life.
- 8:13Or maybe it is limiting beliefs about what God can actually do
- 8:17in your life, what he desires to do.
- 8:21Another question that really made me pause was this.
- 8:24If Paul came back today and visited your church or saw your
- 8:30life day-to-day, would he be able to boast about your faith
- 8:33and perseverance? Of course, I know that our
- 8:38culture looks different today than it did then, but are we
- 8:41still desperately pursuing the presence of God moving forward?
- 8:48Paul highlights 2 things that sustain believers throughout
- 8:52hardship and trials. The first thing is faith.
- 8:56Faith is our foundation. It comes from believing that God
- 9:01is working all things for our good and for His glory.
- 9:05We see this all throughout Scripture, but specifically
- 9:09Romans 828 that we know in all things God works for the good of
- 9:14those who love Him who have been called according to His purpose.
- 9:18And Psalm 8411 says that no good thing does the Lord withhold
- 9:23from those whose walk is blameless.
- 9:26That truth, our faith, it's our anchor.
- 9:30Secondly, our perseverance. Perseverance is really what
- 9:34faith produces because when you truly believe that God is
- 9:39working, even when you can't see it yet, you keep walking
- 9:43forward. You keep trusting and obeying.
- 9:46You continue showing up. I read something recently in a
- 9:50devo called Waiting on God. It's written by Andrew Murray
- 9:54and it's actually one that I have read pretty much every
- 9:58single night when I can for the past 3 1/2 years.
- 10:01I literally recycle through it because it is just so dense and
- 10:05full of wisdom. And there's one specific day
- 10:09that talks about how patience is a grace that God supplies.
- 10:13It's active on our part, but God is the one who empowers us to
- 10:18endure. Colossians 111 it says being
- 10:23strengthened with all power according to his glorious might,
- 10:27so that you may have great endurance and patience.
- 10:32But before perseverance can happen, we first have to trust
- 10:36God's timing, that his timing is perfect, that it is divine.
- 10:41It is supernatural because it comes from God, even when we
- 10:45don't fully understand it. And it brings so much peace
- 10:50because when things don't go the way that we may expect, whether
- 10:54that is in a loss or disappointment or opposition and
- 10:58conflict in this world, maybe a breakup or losing a loved one,
- 11:04walking through a difficult season, our confidence is not in
- 11:08the circumstance, working out exactly how we hoped.
- 11:12Our confidence is in the fact that God is still working, that
- 11:16His plan is still unfolding, and that He's accomplishing His
- 11:21purposes in and through US, even in seasons that we don't fully
- 11:25understand. In the moment when our hope is
- 11:28rooted there, it allows us to keep going faithfully, no matter
- 11:34the timeline. So I know that that was a lot to
- 11:38unpack even in 4 verses, but let's go ahead and close out in
- 11:42prayer and just ask God to minister to our hearts
- 11:46individually. Heavenly Father, thank you so
- 11:50much for the reminders that you give us so graciously in Your
- 11:55Word. Would you help us to live with
- 11:57both urgency and faithfulness, remembering that only you know
- 12:03the timing of all things? Lord, would you grow our faith?
- 12:08Would you grow our love for others and would you strengthen
- 12:11us with perseverance so that we don't grow weary and doing good
- 12:16and fulfilling the mission that you have given us?
- 12:20Would you teach us to trust your timing above our own?
- 12:24We love you, Jesus, we trust you.
- 12:27We give you today, and I just ask that you be with every
- 12:31listener on this Tuesday or whatever day that they're
- 12:34listening to this, that you administer to their hearts and
- 12:38that they would feel your presence and become more aware
- 12:40of it. We ask this all in your name,
- 12:43Jesus. Amen.
- 12:45OK, well that is today's episode.
- 12:47I hope that you all have a great rest of your day and I will see
- 12:50you all on the next pod.
