- 1:26Speaker 1: Yes, that's right. Karen Krause will join us. That's coming
- 1:29Speaker 1: up in less than an hour, where we will chat
- 1:33Speaker 1: with her about joining Sporting State from the New York Times.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Always going to be great to see what Clay's doing
- 1:39Speaker 1: with the site. He keeps adding and adding and adding.
- 1:42Speaker 1: And Karen Krause, the latest addition, she'll join us. That's
- 1:47Speaker 1: a little bit later. Plus, Jared Stillman. who can't go
- 1:51Speaker 1: cover the Tennessee Titans practices anymore. His credential has been revoked, Chad.
- 1:57Speaker 2: I couldn't believe it when I saw the news. We
- 2:00Speaker 2: got the news broken to us from the person who
- 2:03Speaker 2: had the credential revoked in a text from Jared Stillman.
- 2:07Speaker 2: And when I read the text, and it was a
- 2:09Speaker 2: story from our old colleague, Paul Koharski, writing the story
- 2:12Speaker 2: that his media credential had been revoked, it was one
- 2:15Speaker 2: of those, Hutton, where I did the double take, thinking,
- 2:17Speaker 2: is this like AI-generated, not real, Is this a fake story,
- 2:22Speaker 2: fake news?
- 2:23Speaker 1: And then I read it. I'm like, oh, this is
- 2:25Speaker 1: very much real.
- 2:27Speaker 2: We were surprised when Jared Curtis wasn't the starting quarterback
- 2:30Speaker 2: at Vanderbilt, right? I'm typically not overly surprised about certain things. Hutton,
- 2:36Speaker 2: you know this organization better than most human beings alive,
- 2:40Speaker 2: I would say. So I want to cede the floor
- 2:44Speaker 2: to you on this and what this says about the Titans.
- 2:47Speaker 2: I think my initial response was just that of surprise.
- 2:51Speaker 2: that an NFL team would behave in this small manner.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Because we get on the WNBA for not being big time, right?
- 3:00Speaker 2: The most big time of big time things in American
- 3:03Speaker 2: sport is the NFL. So it does surprise me when
- 3:06Speaker 2: I see an NFL organization behave in a way that
- 3:09Speaker 2: I just think is very much beneath them. And that's
- 3:12Speaker 2: what the Titans did with this, with revoking the credential
- 3:16Speaker 2: of Jared Stillman, Very shortly after, he had a small
- 3:19Speaker 2: exchange with Cam Ward that was a bunch of nothing,
- 3:22Speaker 2: where he asked him a question about his evaluation, and
- 3:24Speaker 2: Cam Ward asked it back to him, and he said, okay,
- 3:26Speaker 2: I'm glad you feel that way, next question. And they
- 3:28Speaker 2: moved on, and then they revoked his credential.
- 3:31Speaker 1: What were your thoughts? I thought it was soft. I
- 3:34Speaker 1: thought the organization's being soft. And par for the course,
- 3:39Speaker 1: I guess, with what we've seen. This is state-run media now,
- 3:43Speaker 1: is what it comes across as. And I was told
- 3:47Speaker 1: that it was Robert Sala that walked in and told
- 3:49Speaker 1: the beat writers that this was happening right before the
- 3:52Speaker 1: general manager spoke. So, yeah, if it was Robert Sala,
- 3:59Speaker 1: then Robert Sala is not learning from his past mistakes
- 4:03Speaker 1: in New York. I don't know if he's the one
- 4:05Speaker 1: that came down with it, but he's the one that
- 4:06Speaker 1: informed the rest of the media corps about it. That's
- 4:09Speaker 1: what I'm told.
- 4:10Speaker 2: He came down and told the media corps that they
- 4:12Speaker 2: were revoking Jared Stillman's credential?
- 4:14Speaker 1: That's what I'm told, yes, Chad. That's what I'm told.
- 4:17Speaker 1: As like a warning shot? Not a warning shot. No, no, no, no.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Don't twist what I'm saying. Not a warning shot. He's
- 4:23Speaker 1: just the one that informed everyone before Jared Stillman could
- 4:25Speaker 1: get it out. Okay. So that's how Paul reported it. Yes, correct. Okay. Yes.
- 4:33Speaker 1: I thought Jared had just leaked it to Paul. I
- 4:36Speaker 1: did too.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Well, Paul had a full story written too, pretty quickly.
- 4:40Speaker 2: So I assume that Jared told him and then he
- 4:42Speaker 2: got with the Titans and then he wrote his, his
- 4:45Speaker 2: opinion piece on it, which I mean, look, Paul said
- 4:47Speaker 2: what everybody in media understands that it's a mistake by
- 4:51Speaker 2: the Titans.
- 4:52Speaker 1: He said that in a video, he said that in
- 4:54Speaker 1: his story also. I mean, I'm not as harsh as
- 4:56Speaker 1: we're saying, not as harsh as we're saying that it's
- 4:58Speaker 1: soft and it's, and it's ridiculous. I mean, look at,
- 5:03Speaker 1: Paul also said that Jared's probably reveling in this. He's
- 5:07Speaker 1: probably gleefully skipping around. I don't think that's the case either. Right?
- 5:14Speaker 3: No.
- 5:14Speaker 2: I mean, look, I don't think so at all. But look,
- 5:19Speaker 2: I would also say that this could help Jared. It's
- 5:24Speaker 2: not going to be a lasting thing. Like these stories
- 5:27Speaker 2: go away pretty quick. We're going to talk to Jared
- 5:30Speaker 2: Stillman later in the show about this, too, and we'll
- 5:32Speaker 2: hear it straight from him about how he feels about
- 5:34Speaker 2: it and whether or not he wants to actually try
- 5:35Speaker 2: to get the credential back at some point.
- 5:38Speaker 1: We'll ask him all those questions.
- 5:39Speaker 2: We'll ask him to defend himself against what people are
- 5:43Speaker 2: saying as to why he got it taken away, and
- 5:45Speaker 2: he can explain everything about it. Hutton, what I've seen, though,
- 5:48Speaker 2: the reaction from media is people that are longstanding media
- 5:53Speaker 2: members that have done it for a long time or
- 5:56Speaker 2: even if they don't like Jared, are like, this is
- 5:58Speaker 2: a soft move by the Titans.
- 6:00Speaker 1: It's stupid.
- 6:01Speaker 2: This and that, right? I saw Joe Rexroad post that.
- 6:03Speaker 1: I've seen others. We're going to be harder than most
- 6:05Speaker 1: on that.
- 6:06Speaker 2: You know what this is?
- 6:08Speaker 1: What? Say that again? You know what this is? This
- 6:10Speaker 1: is Vanderbilt Commodores-era James Franklin, where they want apologies read
- 6:15Speaker 1: on the air. This is Nashville Predators-era Chad, you better
- 6:23Speaker 1: stop singing the national anthem. We're going to take P.K.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Subban off a 3HL era. Yeah, you're right. This is
- 6:29Speaker 1: National Predators soft. Now it's the Tennessee Titans. That's who
- 6:34Speaker 1: they are. This is their era of that, which is
- 6:37Speaker 1: weak sauce, man. You're spot on.
- 6:42Speaker 2: And for those that don't know the story, the National
- 6:43Speaker 2: Predators at one point did threaten our old radio station
- 6:47Speaker 2: because I had the audacity to break who the national
- 6:51Speaker 2: anthem singer was going to be throughout the playoff run
- 6:54Speaker 2: of 2019.
- 6:55Speaker 1: 2019, 2017. 2017.
- 6:57Speaker 2: 2017 to the Stanley Cup final that I was breaking
- 7:00Speaker 2: the national anthem singer every day on our old show,
- 7:02Speaker 2: the Midday 180, and the Preds got so mad. well,
- 7:06Speaker 2: Sean Henry got so mad that he called our radio
- 7:08Speaker 2: station and threatened to pull P.K.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Subban off another show, which.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Put me in a very difficult spot in that, okay,
- 7:14Speaker 2: you're going to cost this segment for our station if
- 7:17Speaker 2: you keep doing it. But I fought it, and we
- 7:20Speaker 2: fought it. We've also been demanded to make an apology
- 7:22Speaker 2: for something we didn't say, for having a reporter on
- 7:25Speaker 2: who had a report and were forced to apologize by Vanderbilt.
- 7:29Speaker 2: I'm with you, Hutton, and what really irritates me, and I...
- 7:34Speaker 2: Most of this is from nameless, faceless Twitter bot accounts
- 7:38Speaker 2: that don't even have, some of them didn't even bother
- 7:41Speaker 2: to put a picture next to their avatar. It's just
- 7:43Speaker 2: people cursing Stillman or cursing us or praising the Titans
- 7:48Speaker 2: or you're going to be next. Oh, thank God the
- 7:50Speaker 2: Titans did this. Now they've given a message to all media,
- 7:54Speaker 2: fall in line or get out. I can't say this
- 7:57Speaker 2: any stronger that you're a part of the problem because
- 8:00Speaker 2: the Titans are an organization.
- 8:02Speaker 1: They have antenna ears. At all times.
- 8:05Speaker 2: They're reading the comments. They're listening to the shows. They're
- 8:08Speaker 2: watching the shows like ours. And if your response is
- 8:12Speaker 2: overwhelmingly positive that someone is going Gestapo with their media policies,
- 8:18Speaker 2: you're a part of the problem. I don't care how
- 8:20Speaker 2: diehard of a fan you are. I don't care if
- 8:21Speaker 2: you've sat in Section 324 for the last 20 years.
- 8:25Speaker 2: You are a part of the problem by defending that
- 8:28Speaker 2: level of softness with an organization. And Hutton, I think
- 8:31Speaker 2: what we've been saying throughout consistently is, Please, oh please,
- 8:35Speaker 2: just focus on the things that can get this team
- 8:37Speaker 2: back to winning and not stupid BS like this.
- 8:41Speaker 1: And you know what that is? Focus on stopping Geno
- 8:43Speaker 1: Smith on third down whenever they play week one. Focus
- 8:48Speaker 1: on running the football against the Jets organization that last
- 8:51Speaker 1: year their team gave up almost as much as the
- 8:53Speaker 1: Giants did on the ground. I mean, they're really, really
- 8:56Speaker 1: bad run defense. Focus on winning week one, something the
- 9:00Speaker 1: organization hasn't done routinely. at all over the course of
- 9:03Speaker 1: the last 10 to 15 years. In fact, I'm going
- 9:06Speaker 1: to get an exact number on that just to point
- 9:08Speaker 1: out the emphasis of how much they've sucked in the
- 9:11Speaker 1: month of September. They don't win in the month of September.
- 9:13Speaker 1: They talk about December all this time. They talk about
- 9:16Speaker 1: April more than they talk about September nowadays around this organization.
- 9:21Speaker 1: They talk about the draft instead of week one. And
- 9:25Speaker 1: this is why. They're less than two weeks away from
- 9:28Speaker 1: kicking off And they're worried about a reporter hurting the
- 9:30Speaker 1: feelings of their number one overall pick after the head
- 9:33Speaker 1: coach went on Rich Eisen and said they're not going
- 9:35Speaker 1: to coddle the dude. Again, Robert Sala's tenure in New York,
- 9:43Speaker 1: he was overemphasizing what the media was saying about him
- 9:47Speaker 1: and his team and about media restrictions. And right now,
- 9:53Speaker 1: perception is reality. where it's much more relaxed in Nashville
- 9:57Speaker 1: than it is New York as a media core. And still,
- 10:01Speaker 1: the media stands over three football fields away, according to
- 10:05Speaker 1: what the media has said. They're standing where they can't
- 10:08Speaker 1: even see a practice or what they can report on
- 10:10Speaker 1: or what they can or can't see. Not during training camp,
- 10:13Speaker 1: but what they're about to witness. This is what happened
- 10:15Speaker 1: during minicamp, I believe. And the reporter is no longer
- 10:19Speaker 1: credentialed because he's a YouTuber who dared to ask Cam
- 10:24Speaker 1: Ward a question. And he has no need to be
- 10:28Speaker 1: in that setting. It just so happened that that decision
- 10:32Speaker 1: came down on the eve of when their general manager
- 10:34Speaker 1: was going to speak. I mean, again, if you're going
- 10:37Speaker 1: to talk about playing hardball and bringing the fight and
- 10:41Speaker 1: being all gas, no break as an organization, how about DBAP?
- 10:46Speaker 1: Or SBAP in this case. Stop being a pussy. It's
- 10:51Speaker 1: well said, Hutton.
- 10:53Speaker 2: And if this is the case that Robert Sala is
- 10:56Speaker 2: the one who unilaterally made this decision. I'm not saying
- 10:59Speaker 2: you're saying he unilaterally made it, but if he's involving
- 11:03Speaker 2: himself in going and addressing the media to say that, uh, to,
- 11:06Speaker 2: in their world, the record to chat, a low level YouTuber,
- 11:10Speaker 2: not addressing the media.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Let me, let me just jump in, not addressing the media,
- 11:13Speaker 1: just letting them know the pot, like off the record, like, Hey,
- 11:16Speaker 1: Hey guys, this is going to happen here. This is
- 11:18Speaker 1: what's going to, what you're going to see. This is what,
- 11:19Speaker 1: what the team's doing. He's no longer here. Um, That's
- 11:25Speaker 1: a threat. I mean, that is a threat. The whole
- 11:29Speaker 1: action is it. And that's why this cannot happen. That's
- 11:33Speaker 1: why this matters is because for anybody left, it's like, oh,
- 11:38Speaker 1: we're going to show everyone else. We mean business when
- 11:41Speaker 1: we say you need to talk glowingly about the Titans.
- 11:43Speaker 1: You don't need to make fun of us. You don't
- 11:45Speaker 1: need to point out the facts that this team hasn't
- 11:48Speaker 1: won back-to-back games since John Robinson was the general manager.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Or we'll just revoke your credential because you're just a YouTuber.
- 11:54Speaker 1: We'll revise our media policy to make sure that the
- 11:58Speaker 1: ones that are allowed through these gates are the ones
- 12:00Speaker 1: that are going to regurgitate the BS that we've been
- 12:03Speaker 1: pumping out here since we've been a losing franchise. And
- 12:06Speaker 1: that's what they are. They're a loser franchise right now.
- 12:11Speaker 1: They are talked about more for what happens off the
- 12:13Speaker 1: field than on. And if we talked about what happens on,
- 12:16Speaker 1: you get your credential revoked. I just....
- 12:23Speaker 2: And I'm hearing this for the first time about Salah.
- 12:25Speaker 2: And I knew about some of the stuff in New
- 12:27Speaker 2: York also. This is really damning to him and what
- 12:31Speaker 2: he's going to be as a coach.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Yes. It's really damning. And I want everybody out.
- 12:36Speaker 2: There to put their feelings aside about Jared Stillman or
- 12:40Speaker 2: about he's too negative or he's a bad faith actor
- 12:43Speaker 2: or whatever the hell that means or whatever you think
- 12:46Speaker 2: about him, okay? I need everybody out there that's going
- 12:49Speaker 2: to watch this clip, or is watching the show right
- 12:52Speaker 2: now to understand this. This is a bad thing for you,
- 12:56Speaker 2: the fan. This is a bad thing for the sport.
- 12:58Speaker 2: This is a bad thing for your favorite organization, if
- 13:01Speaker 2: you are a Titans fan.
- 13:02Speaker 1: It's not funny.
- 13:04Speaker 2: I don't care if you think Jared Stillman is the
- 13:06Speaker 2: biggest dick on the planet, and you don't ever want
- 13:09Speaker 2: to hear him or talk to him, whatever, or he's
- 13:11Speaker 2: wronged you in some way in the past, or he
- 13:13Speaker 2: cut you off on a phone call when you called
- 13:15Speaker 2: his radio station. Put all of those personal feelings aside
- 13:18Speaker 2: and understand that, that this is a very bad thing.
- 13:23Speaker 2: I've seen some other YouTubers that continue to get access
- 13:27Speaker 2: to the Titans that write a blog or do a
- 13:29Speaker 2: show on YouTube, and they're saying, let me say it
- 13:32Speaker 2: in two ways. Jared Stillman has done plenty for the
- 13:35Speaker 2: organization to hate him.
- 13:36Speaker 1: There you go. And revoke it. Stop. Stop it right there.
- 13:41Speaker 4: Yes.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Teams hate reporters all the time, Hutton.
- 13:44Speaker 1: This is nothing new. No.
- 13:46Speaker 2: We've worked with people that teams hated the reporter. You
- 13:50Speaker 2: think Vrabel and company, that they wanted to enact a
- 13:53Speaker 2: new media policy?
- 13:54Speaker 1: Of course they did. And you're right. We have worked
- 13:57Speaker 1: with people.
- 13:59Speaker 2: And the Titans organization is allowing a coach... in Robert Salish,
- 14:05Speaker 2: who I like in his public-facing demeanor and what he
- 14:10Speaker 2: says and what he talks about with the team. I
- 14:12Speaker 2: think he's a good defensive coordinator. I think Brian Dayball's
- 14:15Speaker 2: a great offensive coordinator. I think the two of them
- 14:17Speaker 2: together on both sides of the football and then with
- 14:19Speaker 2: Bones Fossil on special teams could work with good players, right,
- 14:24Speaker 2: for the Titans.
- 14:25Speaker 1: But let's also say this fact.
- 14:28Speaker 2: He's a failure as a head coach so far in
- 14:29Speaker 2: his career.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Yes, he is. And I'll leave it there. You're allowing–
- 14:34Speaker 1: this is not– Time to prove it.
- 14:36Speaker 2: You didn't hire John Harbaugh, right, who's won a Super
- 14:41Speaker 2: Bowl and won for many, many years as the Ravens
- 14:43Speaker 2: head coach to come in, and then he says, hey, guys,
- 14:45Speaker 2: this is how we did in Baltimore, and I won
- 14:47Speaker 2: a damn lot of games doing this. We're going to
- 14:50Speaker 2: do this in Nashville now. This is the new media policy.
- 14:52Speaker 2: You're allowing a failed head coach to come in and
- 14:55Speaker 2: dictate media policy, and you've got the little lapdogs all
- 14:59Speaker 2: over Nashville that cover that team daily that are, well,
- 15:02Speaker 2: he did plenty– To get himself, come on, man. And
- 15:06Speaker 2: also the team employees that are sitting by and defending it,
- 15:11Speaker 2: that are also in media, that also have multiple jobs,
- 15:15Speaker 2: that aren't just on the payroll of the team, but
- 15:19Speaker 2: on payroll of an actual media company, and you don't
- 15:22Speaker 2: have a problem with this, you have no backbone.
- 15:24Speaker 1: Yeah, you're talking about the employees that are outside of
- 15:26Speaker 1: the practice facility.
- 15:29Speaker 2: I'm talking about the employees that take a check to
- 15:32Speaker 2: do Titans broadcast and also host radio shows.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Correct. Yes.
- 15:37Speaker 2: If you're not outwardly saying this is a bunch of
- 15:40Speaker 2: BS just because you don't like the guy, then you
- 15:44Speaker 2: are a part of the problem. I'm lumping you in
- 15:46Speaker 2: with everybody else. You're a part of the Gestapo. So,
- 15:49Speaker 2: you know, join right in.
- 15:51Speaker 1: They did less for someone who was talking about what
- 15:54Speaker 1: happened on the team flight. That's true. That person just
- 15:59Speaker 1: had to fly commercial. Fly commercial. Had to book their
- 16:04Speaker 1: own flight, yep. Just saying. I mean, if you think
- 16:08Speaker 1: it's not directed, let's just look at it that way.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Same regime, by the way. It's crazy. It's crazy that
- 16:17Speaker 1: the Titans would bend their will. Acting ownership and Mike Borgonzi.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Yeah, the Titans' ownership bending their will to a failed
- 16:26Speaker 2: head coach so far in his career. going for a
- 16:28Speaker 2: second try at doing something successfully.
- 16:31Speaker 1: Is crazy to me.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Whoever made this decision would have been crazy to me,
- 16:35Speaker 2: but the fact that now we believe the head coach
- 16:38Speaker 2: is behind it.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Is exceptionally crazy. <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL>
- 16:41Speaker 1: We're not going down that path again. Again, I started
- 16:43Speaker 1: by this by saying don't twist it when I'm saying
- 16:45Speaker 1: that he's the one that's behind it. He's not behind it.
- 16:47Speaker 1: He delivered the information to the media. That's all I said. Okay.
- 16:52Speaker 1: That's all I said. He's not behind it. Now, maybe
- 16:56Speaker 1: he is, but I did not say he's behind it.
- 17:00Speaker 1: He's the one that knew about it. He definitely knew
- 17:03Speaker 1: about it. But behind it, there's one person in the
- 17:07Speaker 1: building that's behind everything. Burke Nihill. I don't know why a.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Head coach would go and do that if he wasn't
- 17:15Speaker 2: in some way agreeing with the decision.
- 17:18Speaker 1: Well, he could agree with it, but he's not behind it.
- 17:21Speaker 1: I'm not trying to say that this is Robert Saleh
- 17:23Speaker 1: against Jared Stillman. Got you. That's all I'm saying. But
- 17:27Speaker 1: how did the news get out? The head coach delivered
- 17:30Speaker 1: it right before the general manager spoke, is what I'm told.
- 17:34Speaker 1: I just assumed it was Stillman who told the media
- 17:37Speaker 1: about it. That was not the case. It was laid
- 17:41Speaker 1: out there. Dondi Plowman gets tough. And the Vols get
- 17:47Speaker 1: some millions for a patch that's all straight ahead here
- 17:50Speaker 1: on Hunter Withrow. The NFL debuts one week from tonight.
- 17:55Speaker 1: And it's Seattle minus 3.5 against New England. Big news.

- 18:55Speaker 1: Chad Burton. I said Burke. Dondi Plowman. Dondi Plowman is
- 19:00Speaker 1: talking tough.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Yeah. And I've got quotes here in front of me
- 19:05Speaker 2: with her. She's the head of the SEC Leadership Committee, basically,
- 19:11Speaker 2: of presidents and chancellors. And she has been quoted as saying,
- 19:16Speaker 2: we have a responsibility to try and lead the best
- 19:19Speaker 2: we can in this time of chaos. Our group is
- 19:21Speaker 2: united on this. This is not a rule we will
- 19:23Speaker 2: budge on. Enough is enough. It's not a new rule.
- 19:27Speaker 2: We didn't just cook up a rule. The way we
- 19:30Speaker 2: see it, we are a voluntary membership organization, and we
- 19:33Speaker 2: have a right to set and enforce our rules. We
- 19:35Speaker 2: want to clarify, this is not about the five for five.
- 19:39Speaker 2: This is about if you signed a contract, you signed
- 19:41Speaker 2: a contract. That's always been the bottom line. You don't
- 19:43Speaker 2: get to unsign it and come back. And now this
- 19:46Speaker 2: is on the eve of a court hearing Thursday in Statehouse.
- 19:50Speaker 2: court in Baton Rouge, where a judge will decide whether
- 19:53Speaker 2: or not to issue a preliminary injunction in this on
- 19:57Speaker 2: behalf of the SEC, who's trying to get the preliminary
- 20:00Speaker 2: injunction to say, we do have the right to levy
- 20:03Speaker 2: penalties against our own conference, which sounds crazy. But because
- 20:07Speaker 2: of other court rulings, they have to specify this.
- 20:10Speaker 1: It does sound crazy. We don't have a right to
- 20:14Speaker 1: levy penalties if we don't want to.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Well, and for them to come back and say that,
- 20:18Speaker 2: and now mixing with that also, you've got the college
- 20:21Speaker 2: football playoff committee and college football playoff leaders. They're discussing
- 20:26Speaker 2: implementing rules that would automatically disqualify a program that plays
- 20:29Speaker 2: an ex-NFL player.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Which is what we wanted from the tournament back with Alabama.
- 20:36Speaker 2: Yeah, we wanted the committee to come out and say,
- 20:39Speaker 2: all right, then you're ineligible for the tournament.
- 20:40Speaker 1: The SEC can't do anything, but we will. And look,
- 20:44Speaker 1: I'm sure there's going to be.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Some lawsuit from all the lawyers that are on social
- 20:48Speaker 2: media all day long saying that they're going to sue
- 20:50Speaker 2: the College Football Playoff Committee if they try to do
- 20:52Speaker 2: this and make them ineligible. So that's going to be
- 20:54Speaker 2: part of it. Look, everybody's talking. To me, it's all
- 20:57Speaker 2: of this. It's like, you know, Robert Sala going in
- 21:00Speaker 2: and telling the media, hey, we're doing this. This is
- 21:02Speaker 2: what's happening. Without saying you're next, what they're saying to
- 21:06Speaker 2: LSU is, we are having discussions about doing all these things.
- 21:11Speaker 2: And the moment we get the favorable court ruling that
- 21:13Speaker 2: you continue to get, wherever you file it, we'll find
- 21:17Speaker 2: our friendly judges.
- 21:18Speaker 1: We'll go file injunctions with them.
- 21:20Speaker 2: And if this thing dominoes down, we're going to possibly
- 21:24Speaker 2: ban you from the college football playoff. We're going to
- 21:26Speaker 2: possibly suspend you for half a season if you're the
- 21:28Speaker 2: head coach. We're going to make the players ineligible. We
- 21:32Speaker 2: have the right with the college football playoff to make
- 21:35Speaker 2: you ineligible for the college football playoff. They're saying we're–
- 21:39Speaker 2: everything is they're having discussions. We're having discussions about this.
- 21:43Speaker 2: There's no accident that they're putting this news out there,
- 21:46Speaker 2: that it's getting reported. They're leaking this news to Ross
- 21:48Speaker 2: Dellinger and On3 Sports and all these different outlets because
- 21:52Speaker 2: they want the talk out there going into Thursday– in
- 21:56Speaker 2: the hopes, which we still haven't seen, which I'm a
- 21:58Speaker 2: little bit surprised, but in the hopes that Lane Kiffin
- 22:00Speaker 2: and LSU would just say, hey guys, this is clearly
- 22:04Speaker 2: a pretty big deal for the SEC and college football,
- 22:06Speaker 2: so we're just going to back off on this and
- 22:09Speaker 2: let them go try to find a home somewhere else
- 22:11Speaker 2: and do something else. Remember when Texas Tech initially was
- 22:14Speaker 2: going to roster Brendan Sorsby? And they're like, we're going
- 22:17Speaker 2: to send him to gambling rehab. We're going to help him.
- 22:20Speaker 2: We will support him. He is not in trouble. He
- 22:23Speaker 2: will be suspended for the home opener against whoever the
- 22:26Speaker 2: hell they play.
- 22:27Speaker 1: And that's it.
- 22:27Speaker 2: This kid deserves the right to play. And then everybody
- 22:30Speaker 2: crushed him. The Big 12, the NCAA is like, no, no, no,
- 22:33Speaker 2: we're going to make him ineligible. All that talk started.
- 22:36Speaker 2: And this was after they had their little fireside chat
- 22:39Speaker 2: where Joey McGuire and Cody Campbell and the university president
- 22:43Speaker 2: all got together and they discussed. It looked like a
- 22:45Speaker 2: hostage video. They discussed why they were keeping Brendan Sorsby.
- 22:49Speaker 2: And then a day later, what happened? They released a statement. Yeah,
- 22:54Speaker 2: I think it's best that we just let him go.
- 22:56Speaker 2: and we move forward with Will Hammond at quarterback. I
- 22:58Speaker 2: keep waiting on LSU to do this, but they are
- 23:01Speaker 2: showing clearly they are a different breed than every other
- 23:04Speaker 2: program and every other school in America.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Also, last I checked, I thought this was just for
- 23:09Speaker 1: a 2022 deal because of that fifth-year option. The way
- 23:13Speaker 1: everyone's reacting to this sure feels like it's more than that,
- 23:16Speaker 1: or could be, could lead to more than that down
- 23:18Speaker 1: the road if this begins to happen. They're trying to
- 23:22Speaker 1: end this now.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Yes.
- 23:24Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 23:24Speaker 2: Look, you give someone an inch, and they're going to
- 23:26Speaker 2: take a mile. And I think they know that with
- 23:29Speaker 2: not just Lane Kiffin, but other coaches that could see
- 23:31Speaker 2: any type of advantage they could gain by doing this. Yes,
- 23:33Speaker 2: now this is, and that's why Donde Plowman says, this
- 23:36Speaker 2: is not about the five for five and all the
- 23:38Speaker 2: players that are just trying to get that fifth year.
- 23:40Speaker 2: This is about you signed an NFL contract or you
- 23:42Speaker 2: signed an NBA contract, in the case of Will Wade,
- 23:45Speaker 2: also at LSU, with RJ Luis and others that he's recruiting.
- 23:49Speaker 2: Right now, he didn't really have a roster. He's trying
- 23:51Speaker 2: to build his roster around former pros. So that would
- 23:53Speaker 2: set up his season for success or failure based on
- 23:56Speaker 2: these rulings. They're saying if you've signed a pro contract,
- 24:00Speaker 2: this is not about firefighting. That's what Donde Plowman is
- 24:03Speaker 2: saying from Tennessee. Look, I like all the tough talk.
- 24:06Speaker 2: It's a lot of threats right now going around.
- 24:10Speaker 1: I keep waiting.
- 24:11Speaker 2: I'm refreshing my computer to see if news is breaking
- 24:15Speaker 2: about LSU standing down. And they are 10 toes down
- 24:19Speaker 2: right now. They are just like, we're going to let
- 24:21Speaker 2: these players decide if we're going to play.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Them or not.
- 24:23Speaker 2: And I'm thinking, you also have decision-making power as a
- 24:26Speaker 2: school and as a program to do what you want.
- 24:29Speaker 2: Steve Sarkeesian, he gets on the mic at his press
- 24:32Speaker 2: conference yesterday and says, it's immoral. He's like, I see
- 24:35Speaker 2: it as a moral issue to your team. Like you're
- 24:38Speaker 2: going to bring someone in and you're going to tell
- 24:39Speaker 2: somebody who's been working for nine months, you know, hit
- 24:42Speaker 2: the road. Now people immediately are like, well, you know,
- 24:44Speaker 2: you did this with such and such player last year
- 24:46Speaker 2: and you did this and that when you.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Brought this guy in and all that.
- 24:49Speaker 2: And I get his broader point of what he's saying,
- 24:52Speaker 2: but I keep going back to with Lane Kiffin, he
- 24:56Speaker 2: just doesn't care about those things.
- 24:58Speaker 1: I just don't think it factors in his brain.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Like when he's talking, the way he's, you know, It's
- 25:04Speaker 2: almost like he's just so tunnel vision. It's borderline an
- 25:07Speaker 2: issue that he's like, I spoke to the leadership council
- 25:11Speaker 2: and they all said, I.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Saw somebody.
- 25:15Speaker 2: Oh gosh, who was, I think it was Brandon Marcello
- 25:18Speaker 2: of CBS that tweeted Hutton and said, this is like
- 25:20Speaker 2: a dad going to their child and asking who's the
- 25:24Speaker 2: best daddy in the world. when they're a small child,
- 25:27Speaker 2: when Lane Kiffin goes to the leaders on his team
- 25:29Speaker 2: and says, are you okay with me making the team better?
- 25:32Speaker 2: And if someone were to raise their hand and say,
- 25:34Speaker 2: you know, my roommate is this backup tight end, and
- 25:37Speaker 2: now his playing time is going to be affected.
- 25:39Speaker 1: I don't like it. No one's going to say that
- 25:40Speaker 1: to Lane Kiffin. He's like, you know, I went to
- 25:42Speaker 1: my team, and I asked, you know, hey, what do
- 25:45Speaker 1: you guys prefer here? And they all said they didn't
- 25:48Speaker 1: have a problem with it, whatever makes the team better.
- 25:50Speaker 1: You know, he just says it like so nonchalant, and
- 25:52Speaker 1: it's like, of course they say whatever makes the team better,
- 25:54Speaker 1: because Their spot's not being replaced. Yes. And Daddy is
- 25:59Speaker 1: standing in front of them, asking them the question.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Like, you don't want to be the guy that raises
- 26:03Speaker 2: your hand as a player and says, you know what, Coach? Actually,
- 26:05Speaker 2: I do have a problem with us being better, with
- 26:08Speaker 2: having better players, because it affects me. Even if it
- 26:10Speaker 2: did affect them a little bit, like with a rotation
- 26:13Speaker 2: or some snaps here or there, they're not going to
- 26:15Speaker 2: be the one to do it because, A, you're– Your
- 26:19Speaker 2: stance as a competitor is I'm going to beat the
- 26:21Speaker 2: guy out and I'm going to be better. But also it's,
- 26:24Speaker 2: of course, I'm not going to sit here and tell
- 26:26Speaker 2: the coach who's framed it this way about getting better
- 26:30Speaker 2: that I don't want to be better as a team.
- 26:31Speaker 1: Like no one's going to answer that.
- 26:33Speaker 2: That's what's so comical about Lane Kiffin's argument and all this.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Chad, the WNBA would need to get better to beat
- 26:39Speaker 1: the National Balls. I know that. And, well, the official
- 26:43Speaker 1: gear for the National Balls is XXXY Athletics, founded by
- 26:46Speaker 1: Jennifer Say, former national champion gymnast, former Levi's brand president.
- 26:51Speaker 1: She walked away from a corporate job rather than say
- 26:53Speaker 1: something that she didn't believe, and she started XXXY Athletics instead.
- 26:57Speaker 1: And their mission, in their words, is to empower female
- 26:59Speaker 1: athletes to take a stand for fair competition. And they
- 27:02Speaker 1: call it the T that launched a movement. And this
- 27:04Speaker 1: is real athletic apparel. The official stop, the one-stop shop
- 27:08Speaker 1: to get Nashville Balls athletic gear.
- 27:11Speaker 2: WNBA's next great dynasty, like the Las Vegas Aces, it's
- 27:15Speaker 2: going to be multiple titles for these Nashville Balls. They've
- 27:18Speaker 2: got merch ready, tees, trucker hats out now. If you

- 27:29Speaker 2: That's XX-XYAthletics.com.

- 28:44Speaker 1: Perfect10Mortgage. com. Call them at 855-789-1010. That's Perfect10Mortgage. com. Perfect10Mortgage. com.
- 28:52Speaker 2: Is an equal housing lender. Perfect 10 Mortgage is a
- 28:55Speaker 2: DBA or network funding LP. NMLS number 2297, equal housing lender.
- 28:59Speaker 2: All borrowers must qualify. This advertisement is not a promise
- 29:03Speaker 2: to make alone.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Chad, the Tennessee Volunteers are getting paid how much to
- 29:07Speaker 1: wear a jersey patch?
- 29:09Speaker 2: They're getting paid $ 12 million a year to wear a
- 29:13Speaker 2: football-only jersey patch with First Horizon Bank. And this is
- 29:17Speaker 2: a 10-year contract. So Tennessee initially signed a deal with
- 29:21Speaker 2: Axel Logistics to pay $ 3 million plus per year for
- 29:27Speaker 2: men's and women's basketball. The most valuable properties of Tennessee's
- 29:32Speaker 2: athletic department will be in order, football, men's basketball, women's basketball.
- 29:36Speaker 2: Baseball is getting up there also. So if you combine
- 29:39Speaker 2: the two, Tennessee making $ 12 million from First Horizon for
- 29:43Speaker 2: football jersey patches. They're making three plus million, just north
- 29:47Speaker 2: of three million for men's and women's basketball. That puts
- 29:51Speaker 2: them at over $ 15 million per year right now. When
- 29:55Speaker 2: Ohio State signed their contract, I think everybody thought, okay,
- 30:00Speaker 2: they set the bar higher than anyone's going to set it.
- 30:03Speaker 2: But they're making $ 17 million.
- 30:05Speaker 1: A year with JPMorgan Chase. For football, right? For everything.
- 30:10Speaker 2: Ohio State signed a deal. All 26 men's and women's sports.
- 30:14Speaker 2: They're making $ 17.
- 30:16Speaker 1: Million a year.
- 30:18Speaker 2: Notre Dame is making $ 18 million a year. That day,
- 30:22Speaker 2: Notre Dame one-upped them. They announced a deal with SoFi.
- 30:25Speaker 2: to be on all, and again, all of their jerseys, okay? 26,
- 30:29Speaker 2: that's $ 18 million. Danny White, you can say what you
- 30:32Speaker 2: want about his bean-counting abilities and how he's way more
- 30:37Speaker 2: concerned with the money part of it than anything else,
- 30:39Speaker 2: than the on-field or on-court stuff, which I think is
- 30:42Speaker 2: a little bit ridiculous because he knows that that part
- 30:45Speaker 2: of it feeds the other part of it very well
- 30:47Speaker 2: when you're winning. He has worked out a situation where
- 30:51Speaker 2: Tennessee now has only three of their sports covered.
- 30:53Speaker 1: And they're at $ 15 million.
- 30:55Speaker 2: Tennessee could have the richest jersey patch deal of any
- 30:58Speaker 2: other school because they're patchworking it.
- 31:01Speaker 1: Literally.
- 31:02Speaker 2: They've got one company on a football jersey. They've got
- 31:04Speaker 2: a different company on men's and women's basketball. The other
- 31:07Speaker 2: two valuable properties of any real value to sell a
- 31:10Speaker 2: patch on would be baseball and softball.
- 31:13Speaker 1: So if they could get that.
- 31:15Speaker 2: Number north of $ 2 or $ 3 million or around.
- 31:17Speaker 1: That for both those sports.
- 31:19Speaker 2: then they're going to be right there with Notre Dame
- 31:21Speaker 2: and Ohio State. And look, that surprises me. I mean,
- 31:24Speaker 2: I understand Tennessee's a giant brand, but would I put
- 31:27Speaker 2: them with Notre Dame or Ohio State in terms of
- 31:29Speaker 2: what they would get for a jersey patch sponsorship? I wouldn't,
- 31:34Speaker 2: right out of the gates, right? I would think those
- 31:36Speaker 2: schools would be a bit higher than Tennessee, but Danny
- 31:39Speaker 2: White orchestrated this in a way that they could reach
- 31:41Speaker 2: the number of those schools. And also you flip it
- 31:43Speaker 2: to the Big 12 that got $ 20 million for every
- 31:47Speaker 2: team in the conference for every sport, and that was it.
- 31:49Speaker 1: Well, to my knowledge, we only have, is it four
- 31:53Speaker 1: or five SEC programs that have this deal in place?
- 31:57Speaker 1: There's not many.
- 31:58Speaker 2: I mean, a lot are either saying, like, Texas, we're
- 32:01Speaker 2: not going to do it, or we're going to wait
- 32:02Speaker 2: a year to see what we do.
- 32:03Speaker 1: We're going to see Tennessee set the floor, not the ceiling,
- 32:06Speaker 1: but the floor, which is great for Tennessee and the
- 32:09Speaker 1: SEC compared to everybody else because everybody else in the
- 32:11Speaker 1: Big Ten can't pull their weight when it comes to
- 32:15Speaker 1: these millions. You're going to see Tennessee, if Tennessee's getting–
- 32:20Speaker 1: They're 12 for football only. What does that mean for Alabama?
- 32:23Speaker 1: What does that mean for Auburn? What does that mean
- 32:25Speaker 1: for Texas or Texas A & M? Or Oklahoma? You know,
- 32:30Speaker 1: because right now, Arkansas has this, I know. I know
- 32:33Speaker 1: Vanderbilt has a patch. And maybe one other one? Maybe
- 32:38Speaker 1: one other program that I'm, I can't remember who. Maybe LSU?
- 32:41Speaker 1: Is it LSU?
- 32:42Speaker 2: I don't know. I'll have to look up to see
- 32:45Speaker 2: who all has it in the SEC.
- 32:47Speaker 1: I think LSU has a similar, like, Ohio State-esque contract
- 32:52Speaker 1: for all programs. But as far as for just specifically football,
- 33:00Speaker 1: I think it's just Tennessee and the SEC right now
- 33:02Speaker 1: that has something like this.
- 33:04Speaker 2: Yeah, according to AI on Google, LSU has partnered with
- 33:08Speaker 2: Woodside Energy to feature a logo across all athletic uniforms.
- 33:12Speaker 2: Arkansas with Tyson Foods across all 19 varsity sports. Crazy
- 33:17Speaker 2: to see the difference in the amount of sports. Arkansas
- 33:19Speaker 2: has 19 And Ohio State has 26 as an example.
- 33:23Speaker 2: Vanderbilt with SRM Concrete will be on the logo on
- 33:27Speaker 2: the uniforms for just this year. That's a one-year deal.
- 33:31Speaker 2: Missouri has a corporate patch, and then now Tennessee. The
- 33:35Speaker 2: SEC schools have won.
- 33:36Speaker 1: So five. Yeah, so what's a corporate patch for Kentucky
- 33:40Speaker 1: worth on hoops? You know, I don't know. I don't
- 33:44Speaker 1: know the answer.
- 33:45Speaker 2: It's worth more than Tennessee basketball. I mean, if I'm
- 33:47Speaker 2: the one that's trying to get the money for it, right? So,
- 33:50Speaker 2: I mean, we know Tennessee got three, three, three and
- 33:52Speaker 2: a half for men's and women's basketball. I mean, I
- 33:55Speaker 2: think Kentucky could get four for men's basketball only, I
- 33:59Speaker 2: would say, if they worked it right. I mean, this
- 34:03Speaker 2: is a valuable piece of real estate for these athletic
- 34:06Speaker 2: departments that now they have to pay players.
- 34:08Speaker 1: We all know that.
- 34:09Speaker 2: So finding different ways to have other revenue streams– And
- 34:12Speaker 2: you give back to talent that's going to be on
- 34:14Speaker 2: your campus. It's a wise investment right now. And I think,
- 34:18Speaker 2: you know, I'd love to talk to these companies to
- 34:21Speaker 2: see like whatever factors they put in to see the
- 34:23Speaker 2: value they get out of that. Like Pilot on Tennessee's
- 34:25Speaker 2: football field is an example. You know, I'm sure they
- 34:28Speaker 2: have all these things like the visibility they get for
- 34:30Speaker 2: that is worth X amount of dollars in marketing for
- 34:33Speaker 2: their company. I'd love to talk to these companies about
- 34:37Speaker 2: how they feel about these partnerships and what they're getting
- 34:39Speaker 2: out of it. If it's a good, positive experience, then
- 34:43Speaker 2: you're going to see a lot more money rolling in
- 34:45Speaker 2: over the years, even more and more with the jersey patches.
- 34:47Speaker 1: I would say pilot, though, in essence, that's where your
- 34:50Speaker 1: NIL is coming from primarily anyway. Yeah. And you're finally
- 34:54Speaker 1: having a front-facing return on investment in some way, form,
- 34:58Speaker 1: or fashion, right? Just for the Haslam family. That's how
- 35:03Speaker 1: I would say we'll start to see some of the
- 35:05Speaker 1: return on investment because otherwise, like, That's been my question
- 35:08Speaker 1: on if you've been donating to NIL between 2021 and now.
- 35:12Speaker 1: It's like, what's the return on investment if your team
- 35:14Speaker 1: doesn't make the college football playoff? Again, I think there's
- 35:19Speaker 1: a lot of clout to it. There's a lot of, hey,
- 35:21Speaker 1: I'm the team owner, pat on the back thing. But
- 35:23Speaker 1: we really don't know very many names behind the money.
- 35:27Speaker 1: And this certainly puts a name behind the money.
- 35:31Speaker 2: Yeah, and Mark J. Burns at Sporting State wrote a
- 35:34Speaker 2: good piece about this, too. Talking about what you're mentioning, Hutton,
- 35:37Speaker 2: that yes, now these big boosters that were giving money
- 35:41Speaker 2: with no return on investment now can go, if you're
- 35:43Speaker 2: A & M and you own an energy company, right,
- 35:46Speaker 2: and you wanted to go buy the patch, that oil
- 35:48Speaker 2: owner's spending a lot of money with the program anyways.
- 35:52Speaker 2: Now he gets something in return by putting his company's
- 35:54Speaker 2: logo on the jersey or on the football field. Yeah,
- 35:57Speaker 2: I think that's a good avenue for a lot of
- 35:59Speaker 2: these people that would, let's face it, that they're paying
- 36:02Speaker 2: money for suites at the basketball game or the football
- 36:05Speaker 2: game regardless. And now they can get a little bang
- 36:07Speaker 2: for their buck also. Look, it's smart business. I mean,
- 36:10Speaker 2: if you don't, I think the risk is don't make
- 36:13Speaker 2: yourself look like a NASCAR vehicle. You don't want to,
- 36:18Speaker 2: with the monster energy, like if the colored in monster energy,
- 36:20Speaker 2: the neon green is on every jersey, you risk cheapening
- 36:24Speaker 2: the product. I think what I've seen with Tennessee so
- 36:27Speaker 2: far is a good example of, and I think JPMorgan.
- 36:30Speaker 1: Chase will be the same with Ohio State.
- 36:32Speaker 2: It's tough to even really notice that. Like the mock-up
- 36:35Speaker 2: of the First Horizon in orange and white looks like
- 36:39Speaker 2: a torchbearer patch or like something for an academic All-American,
- 36:42Speaker 2: you know, on their individual jersey. But everybody just has
- 36:45Speaker 2: one on there with that corporate logo. I think if
- 36:47Speaker 2: you do it tastefully, it's a really good thing. JT,
- 36:50Speaker 2: what do you got, brother?
- 36:52Speaker 1: Is this a.
- 36:53Speaker 3: Good idea for people like Tennessee to eat these large deals?
- 36:57Speaker 3: Because you look at, I mean, what's this going to
- 36:59Speaker 3: cost in America?
- 37:00Speaker 1: Seven years.
- 37:01Speaker 3: I mean, we may look back and say a $ 10
- 37:02Speaker 3: million or $ 12 million deal was a bargain because this
- 37:06Speaker 3: rate may be $ 25 million a year in 10 years.
- 37:09Speaker 1: It's like the CBS contract for media back in the day. Yeah.
- 37:14Speaker 2: It's a great question. Like Vanderbilt has a one-year deal,
- 37:17Speaker 2: I'm noticing, with SRM Concrete. So they could then go
- 37:19Speaker 2: re-up to somebody else a year from now and get,
- 37:21Speaker 2: and I don't know what they're making, but get more
- 37:23Speaker 2: money than what they're making right now.
- 37:24Speaker 1: Does it escalate? I'm sure it escalates in some way.
- 37:28Speaker 2: No, it's 10 years, $ 120 million. So it's $ 12 million
- 37:32Speaker 2: a year for Tennessee. I don't know if it's paid
- 37:35Speaker 2: out $ 12 million a year.
- 37:36Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I know what you're saying. Or like it
- 37:37Speaker 1: goes up. But, yeah, it's just a 10-year deal. It's
- 37:41Speaker 1: a good question. No, it is.
- 37:43Speaker 2: I'm trying to see what the– JT, you're an Ohio
- 37:45Speaker 2: State guy. What's the length of contract for Ohio State
- 37:49Speaker 2: on this?
- 37:50Speaker 1: It was lengthy. I'll find out.
- 37:52Speaker 2: Yeah, it says it's undisclosed, but there's some estimates as
- 37:57Speaker 2: to how many years– It's going to go with JPMorgan Chase.
- 38:00Speaker 1: It's a good question.
- 38:02Speaker 2: It also could be the way that you get that
- 38:04Speaker 2: much money from that company. They're like, we'll only do
- 38:06Speaker 2: it if we get it for 10 years. We don't
- 38:08Speaker 2: want to be wiped away and re-upped or knocked out
- 38:11Speaker 2: by somebody else in three years if we're going to
- 38:13Speaker 2: do this. So we're going to sign a long-term deal
- 38:15Speaker 2: if we're going to agree to this at all.
- 38:17Speaker 1: Yeah. JT, I was ball last night. Yeah.
- 38:24Speaker 3: Oh, boy, there's nothing like a bunch of nine-year-old girls
- 38:27Speaker 3: playing softball.
- 38:28Speaker 1: It was hot. I'll answer that. I'll give you that answer.
- 38:31Speaker 3: By the way, Ohio State, 15-17, it's just a multi-year, so.
- 38:35Speaker 1: They're not giving up. Undisclosed.
- 38:38Speaker 2: There's probably a lot of escalators in that. Yeah, it's
- 38:42Speaker 2: really bad when it's that hot at night after the
- 38:45Speaker 2: sun goes down. I noticed that the other night for
- 38:47Speaker 2: a 7.30 game. I'm like, I'm still sweating. Everyone here
- 38:50Speaker 2: is still sweating a lot just sitting here at night.
- 38:53Speaker 1: That's not good.
- 38:56Speaker 3: What'll be good will be Saturday in Shelbyville when we're
- 39:00Speaker 3: there at 6 a.m.
- 39:01Speaker 1: Until we lose four times. When you're there in Shelbyville,
- 39:07Speaker 1: you just go by like you're digging a hole with
- 39:09Speaker 1: a shovel. It's welcome to shovel. Shovel, shovel, shovel. Just shovel.
- 39:15Speaker 1: It's S-H-O-V-E-L, shovel.
- 39:19Speaker 2: I got a schedule today, this morning, JT, for next weekend.
- 39:23Speaker 2: We have our first two-day tournament, our first fall tournament
- 39:25Speaker 2: of the year. for September 12th and 13th. Six-game guarantee.
- 39:29Speaker 2: Start at 9 a.m., play at 10.40 a.m., then have
- 39:34Speaker 2: a four-hour break, which I hate. Come back at 2.40,
- 39:38Speaker 2: play at 2.40 and 4, back-to-back, and then come back
- 39:40Speaker 2: at 10 a.m. the next morning and then have another
- 39:43Speaker 2: game at noon. And the top six teams qualify for
- 39:45Speaker 2: a single elimination tournament in that one. The one good
- 39:49Speaker 2: bit of news on that is Tennessee and Georgia Tech
- 39:51Speaker 2: play at night that Saturday. And my last game on
- 39:54Speaker 2: Saturday is four. So while I can watch games on
- 39:56Speaker 2: my phone all day from the park, I will be
- 39:59Speaker 2: able to. And I'm not coaching anymore. So I'll have
- 40:02Speaker 2: a lot more of my attention when I'm watching football
- 40:04Speaker 2: on the phone. I'll be able to get home and
- 40:06Speaker 2: watch Tennessee-Georgia Tech. Enjoy.
- 40:08Speaker 1: You're looking forward to it. I'll keep you guys posted.
- 40:11Speaker 1: I know Ohio State plays Texas next week, right? Not
- 40:14Speaker 1: this week.
- 40:15Speaker 2: Yep.
- 40:16Speaker 1: Our good friend Kirby Allen Kirby. He was talking about
- 40:22Speaker 1: going to watch this game with his family, with family
- 40:25Speaker 1: members and friends up in Ohio. Now, of course, they're
- 40:28Speaker 1: playing down in Texas, but he was going to go
- 40:29Speaker 1: drive and watch Ohio State play with his family. And
- 40:34Speaker 1: he's talking about going to watch this game. Well, he's
- 40:36Speaker 1: talking about how he's going to leave this weekend and
- 40:39Speaker 1: be driving up to watch Ohio State and Texas. Turns out,
- 40:42Speaker 1: of course, they're playing, I believe, Ball State this weekend.
- 40:45Speaker 1: So he picked the wrong weekend. He planned a family
- 40:50Speaker 1: weekend for Ohio State and Ball State, yes. That's perfect.
- 40:54Speaker 1: That's a perfect, curvy story right there.
- 40:56Speaker 2: But, you know, I'm sure they're going to have a
- 40:57Speaker 2: great time hanging out and watching the Ball State Cardinals.
- 41:03Speaker 1: Instead of just watching on TV, Ohio State and Texas. Hey,
- 41:08Speaker 1: Karen Krause is about to join us, Chad. Latest addition
- 41:11Speaker 1: to sportandstate.com. And as Clay mentioned on social, he just
- 41:16Speaker 1: keeps adding and adding. There are not many companies hiring
- 41:18Speaker 1: right now. Clay's is. We are. Clay's is. Karen Krause
- 41:24Speaker 1: joins us coming up. Plus, still to come, Jared Stillman,
- 41:28Speaker 1: the man behind the credential that was revoked by the
- 41:30Speaker 1: Tennessee Titans. That's all straight ahead right here on Sporting State.
- 41:34Speaker 1: Thunder with Rope presented by Hard Rock Bet. Accidents don't
- 41:38Speaker 1: wait for good timing. One bad moment, a wreck, a fall,
- 41:41Speaker 1: a doctor who wasn't paying attention, and suddenly you're fighting
- 41:44Speaker 1: for an insurance company that does this every single day.
- 41:47Speaker 1: And that's why Clay started Clay Travis Law. He's a
- 41:49Speaker 1: Vanderbilt Law grad. He's built a firm around one idea.
- 41:53Speaker 1: People deserve someone willing to pay attention and ask the
- 41:55Speaker 1: hard questions and push back when things don't add up.
- 41:59Speaker 1: Experienced trial attorneys who bring the fight to corporations and
- 42:02Speaker 1: insurers based in Nashville, trusted across the country.
- 42:06Speaker 2: Car and truck wrecks, rideshare accidents, medical malpractice, premises liability,
- 42:10Speaker 2: product liability. If you were wrong, they want to hear
- 42:12Speaker 2: about it. Here's what they promise.
- 42:13Speaker 1: Honesty.
- 42:14Speaker 2: They don't sugarcoat your case. You'll hear what it's actually worth,
- 42:17Speaker 2: not what you want to hear. Case evaluation is free.
- 42:19Speaker 2: No charge, no pressure, no hassle. Just tell them your story.
- 42:23Speaker 2: Go to claytravislaw.com or call them at 877-222-4444. That's claytravislaw.com.
- 42:26Speaker 2: No case is too big or too small.
- 42:33Speaker 1: We are stacking lots of talent at Sport and State, Chad,
- 42:36Speaker 1: and Clay continues to hire. Not many hiring. Clay Travis
- 42:40Speaker 1: is at sportandstate.com. And the very latest is a former
- 42:45Speaker 1: New York Times sports writer, Karen Krause, who joins us
- 42:48Speaker 1: here on Hutton and Withrow. Karen, great to have you
- 42:52Speaker 1: as part of the team. And I'm thrilled that you're
- 42:55Speaker 1: a part of Sport and State.
- 42:57Speaker 4: I am too. I honestly was perfectly happy just ghostwriting books,
- 43:02Speaker 4: living my life, but thrilled. I didn't really realize how
- 43:08Speaker 4: much I still had to say until I started talking
- 43:12Speaker 4: with Dom, Clay's right-hand man, about story ideas and And
- 43:17Speaker 4: I'm really pumped. I'm thrilled. So thank you for having me.
- 43:22Speaker 1: Isn't it weird? Because Chad and I can speak to
- 43:24Speaker 1: this too. Isn't it weird not having the legacy media
- 43:27Speaker 1: gatekeeper looking over the shoulder for ideas that you may have?
- 43:32Speaker 4: Yes, it's also a very nice change to pitch ideas
- 43:37Speaker 4: and be told, fantastic, do it. Without like, well, who
- 43:43Speaker 4: might that offend? And what angle are you going to take?
- 43:47Speaker 4: We have to be very careful here. So yeah, I'm
- 43:50Speaker 4: really happy to be aboard.
- 43:53Speaker 2: Freedom is a great thing, right? It's one of the
- 43:56Speaker 2: best things in media, certainly. And the fact that you
- 43:58Speaker 2: have that freedom here at Sport and State to write
- 44:00Speaker 2: what you want and share your opinions and views is really,
- 44:04Speaker 2: really cool. And look for it. I loved your introductory
- 44:06Speaker 2: column and read it. And I will say also, Karen,
- 44:09Speaker 2: I do the work here. I went out and I
- 44:12Speaker 2: purchased Norwich right.
- 44:15Speaker 1: When I saw that you were hired.
- 44:17Speaker 2: One tiny Vermont town secret to happiness and excellence profiling
- 44:22Speaker 2: the Olympic champions from this tiny town in Vermont. across
- 44:26Speaker 2: the Connecticut River from Hanover, New Hampshire, where Dartmouth University is.
- 44:30Speaker 2: I am through the prologue and through the first chapter
- 44:34Speaker 2: of this book already, just picking it up yesterday after
- 44:36Speaker 2: buying on Amazon and getting it 24 hours later.
- 44:38Speaker 1: You can purchase it there.
- 44:40Speaker 2: I think it's $ 13 in hardcover right now. I love it.
- 44:44Speaker 2: I love it so far. What was the motivation behind
- 44:48Speaker 2: this book and embedding yourself there in the small Vermont town?
- 44:52Speaker 4: So before I did this book, I had never stepped
- 44:56Speaker 4: foot in Vermont. I was covering the 2014 Winter Olympics,
- 45:00Speaker 4: which were a rather unpleasant affair. It felt like we
- 45:03Speaker 4: were all just there as part of Putin's stagecraft. And
- 45:07Speaker 4: it was just awful. And in the middle of it,
- 45:11Speaker 4: I got a reader email saying, you know, you should
- 45:14Speaker 4: really check out Hannah Carney's hometown. Hannah was a mogul
- 45:18Speaker 4: skier who ended up placing on the podium. at those Olympics,
- 45:24Speaker 4: you know, they, they produce a lot of Olympians. So
- 45:27Speaker 4: when I find, I was covering golf full time for
- 45:30Speaker 4: the time. So when I got a break in golf,
- 45:33Speaker 4: I visited Norwich and I was sort of thinking, wow,
- 45:39Speaker 4: this is probably going to be a place that has
- 45:41Speaker 4: these obnoxious stage parents and very regimented. So imagine my parents,
- 45:48Speaker 4: pleasant surprise when I found out, no, these kids are
- 45:52Speaker 4: being organically developed. It's almost like they became accidental Olympians,
- 45:57Speaker 4: but this tiny town with fewer than 3000 residents between
- 46:03Speaker 4: 1960 and 2014 produced 11 Olympians, including three in summer sports.
- 46:10Speaker 4: So I just said about, I actually moved there for
- 46:14Speaker 4: six months and just reported out, like, what is it
- 46:18Speaker 4: about this town? And it is the antithesis of the
- 46:23Speaker 4: youth industrialized sports complex, as I call it, or the
- 46:26Speaker 4: pay-to-play model. They had a robust recreational league, and if
- 46:33Speaker 4: people couldn't afford it, there were people who would step
- 46:36Speaker 4: up and pay the fees. And They had kids, the parents,
- 46:42Speaker 4: they talked about like, oh yeah, we had this kind
- 46:44Speaker 4: of benign neglect and you're praising us for it. But
- 46:48Speaker 4: it wasn't that they neglected their children, but they would
- 46:51Speaker 4: give them agency. They would say, well, if you want
- 46:53Speaker 4: to do that, fine, but I'm not going to, you know,
- 46:55Speaker 4: I'm not going to be packing your bag for you
- 46:58Speaker 4: and I'm not going to be forcing you to get
- 47:00Speaker 4: up in the morning and work out. The two greatest
- 47:04Speaker 4: ski jumpers that America has produced to this day, both
- 47:08Speaker 4: grew up in Norwich. And the older one, Jeff Hastings,
- 47:12Speaker 4: he got the younger one, Mike, into it by just
- 47:16Speaker 4: knocking on his door one day and saying, hey, I've
- 47:18Speaker 4: outgrown these skis. Why don't you try them? And Mike,
- 47:23Speaker 4: he idolized Jeff and was like, well, I'm kind of petrified,
- 47:28Speaker 4: but I'll give it a try. And that's how he
- 47:31Speaker 4: got into it. And this is how the what really
- 47:36Speaker 4: was so lovely about the town is that everybody in
- 47:40Speaker 4: the town supported everyone's child. So it wasn't like my
- 47:45Speaker 4: child needs to be elevated over everybody else for me
- 47:49Speaker 4: to feel good about myself. It was like everybody in
- 47:53Speaker 4: the town rooted for the athletes as if they were
- 47:56Speaker 4: their own. So it was super healthy. Um, I'm not
- 48:01Speaker 4: sure even Norwich is Norwich anymore. I mean, it's so
- 48:04Speaker 4: hard to, um, stiff arm the you know progress as
- 48:09Speaker 4: it's known but um and the one thing like people
- 48:13Speaker 4: said oh well it's so easy for a town like
- 48:15Speaker 4: Norwich they're so affluent and there is an affluent aspect
- 48:20Speaker 4: to it but I argued that in some respects that
- 48:23Speaker 4: makes it harder because I grew up in northern California
- 48:27Speaker 4: and since I've left um it was very much an
- 48:30Speaker 4: agrarian community if you can believe that It's so crazy
- 48:34Speaker 4: to look back in the pre-Silicon days, Valley days, and
- 48:38Speaker 4: remember how there were orchards across the street from your house.
- 48:42Speaker 4: But when you have extreme wealth or even wealth, what
- 48:48Speaker 4: happens invariably is then parents start hiring private coaches or
- 48:53Speaker 4: they move the kid out of that community to a
- 48:56Speaker 4: different team or a different club. And it's actually very isolating.
- 49:01Speaker 4: So that's why the recreational leads matter. The community getting
- 49:06Speaker 4: behind the athletes matters because then it's just very much
- 49:11Speaker 4: one for all, all for one and not this like
- 49:14Speaker 4: isolation exercise that just creates a lot of loneliness and pride.
- 49:20Speaker 4: and expectations on the children.
- 49:24Speaker 1: So I love the book so far.
- 49:26Speaker 2: And first off, it makes me want to move to
- 49:28Speaker 2: Norwich when you hear about how great the people are
- 49:31Speaker 2: there and how they support everybody else's kid. And, you know,
- 49:33Speaker 2: you had the one story about the parents of the
- 49:36Speaker 2: star soccer player who scored two goals. Then he checked
- 49:39Speaker 2: out of the game. And the parents just kept talking
- 49:41Speaker 2: to the other parents like, oh, it's fine.
- 49:42Speaker 1: You know, I see that.
- 49:44Speaker 2: I'm like, parents have been going nuts here in Middle
- 49:47Speaker 2: Tennessee over a decision like that after a player was
- 49:50Speaker 2: playing so well. So it's really refreshing to see all that.
- 49:53Speaker 2: When you see this youth sports industrial complex, though, and
- 49:57Speaker 2: now you pair that with, and I'm sure you're going
- 49:58Speaker 2: to be writing about it at Sport and State, but
- 50:00Speaker 2: you pair that with the carrot of, oh, now my
- 50:04Speaker 2: kid can make a lot of money to play college sports. Right.
- 50:06Speaker 2: If they're exceptional at something. That drives the parent ego
- 50:11Speaker 2: even more to spend more, to do more, to run
- 50:14Speaker 2: that kid into the ground because they're thinking not only
- 50:17Speaker 2: can you get a scholarship, which was the motivation for
- 50:20Speaker 2: years and years, now it is you could also get
- 50:23Speaker 2: rich in college, right? How much do you think that
- 50:27Speaker 2: corrupts the whole process of kids in sports and their parents?
- 50:31Speaker 4: Well, it's definitely becomes a situation where I don't, let
- 50:34Speaker 4: me just preface what I'm going to say by saying this.
- 50:38Speaker 4: I think no parent sets out to make their child's
- 50:42Speaker 4: sports experience miserable, but you know what they say, the
- 50:47Speaker 4: road to hell is paved with the best intentions. And
- 50:50Speaker 4: I have seen in my decades of being a journalist
- 50:55Speaker 4: and as a competitor myself as a child, the parent
- 50:59Speaker 4: who starts living vicariously through their child's successes. And there's
- 51:04Speaker 4: also like in our culture, because we value sports so
- 51:09Speaker 4: much and sports excellence so much, there's a status conferred
- 51:15Speaker 4: upon parents whose children excel. So there's that, they get
- 51:20Speaker 4: social currency as well through their child's success, which adds
- 51:24Speaker 4: to it. But let's be completely realistic about this. Less
- 51:31Speaker 4: than 2% of kids who start sports will compete in
- 51:38Speaker 4: sports in college. And I would submit that number is going,
- 51:42Speaker 4: that percentage is going to grow even smaller as the NIL,
- 51:47Speaker 4: what you guys were talking about, it's going to really
- 51:51Speaker 4: be the ruination, I believe, of Olympic sports on college campuses,
- 51:56Speaker 4: because they are having to pay out so much money
- 52:00Speaker 4: to these big name athletes on the teams that make money,
- 52:07Speaker 4: that it's the money that would normally have been used
- 52:11Speaker 4: to fund the Olympic sports is going to go away,
- 52:13Speaker 4: which then of course will have a ripple effect on
- 52:16Speaker 4: our success in the Olympic realm, because let's face it,
- 52:20Speaker 4: colleges are the de facto developing ground for our Olympic movement.
- 52:24Speaker 4: We are not a state sponsored country in terms of
- 52:28Speaker 4: the Olympics. And so, kids go to college and get
- 52:31Speaker 4: the best coaching and support staff that they can, that
- 52:36Speaker 4: money can buy, that will go away. I just really
- 52:40Speaker 4: think chasing the carrot is so short-sighted on all and
- 52:47Speaker 4: from however you look at it. And, you know, I'm
- 52:52Speaker 4: working on a book with a friend of mine who
- 52:55Speaker 4: I swam with at USC who got fired from her
- 52:58Speaker 4: job at Cal. She had spent 30 years there, coached
- 53:03Speaker 4: four NCAA championship teams, just was a remarkable coach, and
- 53:09Speaker 4: then got fired because some athletes alleged these awful, terrible things.
- 53:16Speaker 4: Of course, the truth is far more nuanced, but who
- 53:19Speaker 4: cares about the truth when you can tell the sensational
- 53:23Speaker 4: story and get clicks and acclaim if you're a reporter.
- 53:27Speaker 4: But I digress. She told me that parents would say
- 53:31Speaker 4: to her, well, I need you to give my child
- 53:33Speaker 4: some money because I need a payoff for this investment
- 53:37Speaker 4: I've been. And, you know, like, what are we talking
- 53:40Speaker 4: about here? You could have all that money spent paying
- 53:44Speaker 4: for traveling clubs and trips all over the country and
- 53:48Speaker 4: world in some respect. In some cases, you could have
- 53:52Speaker 4: put it into some kind of money market and more
- 53:56Speaker 4: than paid off your child's college education. But would that
- 54:00Speaker 4: really give you the ego gratification? And would all your
- 54:03Speaker 4: friends know how awesome you are as a parent because
- 54:07Speaker 4: you've raced this champion? I mean, it's very complicated, right?
- 54:11Speaker 4: You guys are probably already seen it with your children.
- 54:15Speaker 1: Karen, you mentioned covering golf full time for the times.
- 54:18Speaker 1: Which of the sports that you've covered is the most rewarding?
- 54:22Speaker 4: Um, it's funny because every sport I covered, I really
- 54:25Speaker 4: liked it. Like I covered, um, as a columnist, the
- 54:29Speaker 4: Lakers in the early, um, the last Dell Harris years
- 54:33Speaker 4: and the early Bill Jackson years, that was so great.
- 54:38Speaker 4: It was like covering a soap opera, you know, it
- 54:40Speaker 4: was wonderful. I loved it. So I would have told
- 54:42Speaker 4: you the NBA is my favorite then. Um, I would
- 54:46Speaker 4: say overall the Olympic sports, I love the Olympics. It's
- 54:49Speaker 4: my origin story. Um, I'm going to show my age here,
- 54:54Speaker 4: but I don't care. I started swimming after watching Mark
- 54:58Speaker 4: Spitz win seven gold medals in 1972. I turned to
- 55:03Speaker 4: my dad and said, that looks really fun. And literally
- 55:07Speaker 4: the next week, I was swimming at the club that
- 55:10Speaker 4: Spitz had swum with for part of his career. And
- 55:14Speaker 4: so that's what made it so amazing or remarkable when
- 55:18Speaker 4: I then covered Phelps winning his eight gold medal run
- 55:22Speaker 4: for the New York Times in 2008 because it felt
- 55:25Speaker 4: like a full circle moment where I got into the
- 55:28Speaker 4: sport because of one man and then got to chronicle
- 55:33Speaker 4: this other man supplanting Spitz as the all-time best.
- 55:40Speaker 1: That's awesome.
- 55:41Speaker 2: Hey, I know you also cover the New York Jets.
- 55:44Speaker 2: at one point in your career. I got to ask
- 55:46Speaker 2: you about this because later on our show, we're actually
- 55:48Speaker 2: going to have on a local YouTube host who had
- 55:51Speaker 2: his media credential revoked from the team here in Nashville
- 55:54Speaker 2: with the Tennessee Titans. And I can't think of a
- 55:57Speaker 2: single time that a media credential was revoked for behavior
- 56:01Speaker 2: with the Titans in all of our years of covering
- 56:03Speaker 2: the team and being around the team. Do you recall
- 56:05Speaker 2: many instances of this? And if so, what was the
- 56:09Speaker 2: reasoning behind it? With this situation, it's simply... he's too
- 56:12Speaker 2: quote unquote negative for the team to handle. So they
- 56:15Speaker 2: revoked his, his credential.
- 56:17Speaker 4: Well, if that had been the case, I would have
- 56:19Speaker 4: been the only beat writer covering the jazz because I
- 56:22Speaker 4: was the only one who didn't go into the locker
- 56:25Speaker 4: room during the access period every day thinking like, what
- 56:28Speaker 4: shit can I stir up?
- 56:30Speaker 2: You know?
- 56:30Speaker 4: So, um, yeah, it's just a whole different world. That
- 56:34Speaker 4: sounds so crazy to me. I can't even wrap my
- 56:37Speaker 4: head around it. Um, I will tell you a very
- 56:40Speaker 4: funny story. So, um, I was the most junior beat
- 56:45Speaker 4: writer at the Jets easily by seven, eight, maybe 10 years.
- 56:49Speaker 4: I mean, these people were jet lifers. And the players
- 56:56Speaker 4: did not really like the media at all. It was
- 56:59Speaker 4: so obvious from the start. And I was thrown into this.
- 57:02Speaker 4: I couldn't understand the culture at all. So Chad Pennington
- 57:07Speaker 4: was the starting quarterback. my first year was when the
- 57:11Speaker 4: Jets had so many injuries that they ended up signing
- 57:14Speaker 4: Vinny Testaverde. You can't make any of this up. So anyway,
- 57:19Speaker 4: I ended up doing some really, I, my, let's see,
- 57:24Speaker 4: maybe my third month there, I did a profile on
- 57:27Speaker 4: Lavernius Coles, the receiver who, this is a very long
- 57:31Speaker 4: story and I don't want to, you know, make it
- 57:33Speaker 4: even longer, but long story short, when I, I was
- 57:39Speaker 4: trying to introduce myself to Lavernius the first few days
- 57:42Speaker 4: and the other media members were saying like, ah, don't
- 57:45Speaker 4: even bother. He hates the media. And I thought, well,
- 57:48Speaker 4: that's interesting. Like, why does he hate the media? And
- 57:51Speaker 4: I noticed that he was really beloved in the locker room.
- 57:56Speaker 4: He would come out every day with flanked by teammates,
- 57:59Speaker 4: both of whom would probably be laughing at something Lavernius said.
- 58:03Speaker 4: So I'm like, this is not a bad guy. Like
- 58:05Speaker 4: what's going on here? So I made it my mission
- 58:08Speaker 4: to find out what makes Lavernius tick. And so I
- 58:13Speaker 4: told him I wanted to do a feature on him.
- 58:16Speaker 4: And again, dating myself here, said, hey, I noticed that
- 58:20Speaker 4: you wear your headphones and are listening to music a lot.
- 58:25Speaker 4: Why don't we trade iPods? Because what better way to
- 58:28Speaker 4: get to know someone than to listen to the music
- 58:30Speaker 4: that they like? And I think he was so stunned
- 58:33Speaker 4: by the request that he handed over his iPod to me.
- 58:37Speaker 4: And that was the start of this really amazing rapport
- 58:40Speaker 4: with this very complicated and lovely man that resulted in
- 58:45Speaker 4: him telling me, um, for the first time about his
- 58:48Speaker 4: childhood abuse, sexual abuse. And, um, a lot of the
- 58:53Speaker 4: pieces of Lavernius clicked into place when you understood his background. But, um,
- 58:59Speaker 4: A while later, I said to Lavernius and Chad, like,
- 59:05Speaker 4: how come you guys were so fair to me? And like,
- 59:08Speaker 4: it seemed like you didn't really like us, but you
- 59:11Speaker 4: always were super respectful and pleasant to me. And they said, Karen,
- 59:16Speaker 4: we could see how you were being frozen out by
- 59:18Speaker 4: the other reporters. So we thought there must be something
- 59:21Speaker 4: okay about you. It's a lesson to young journalists that
- 59:26Speaker 4: you think that you're observing the athletes like an anthropologist might.
- 59:32Speaker 4: That is if you can get off your screen for
- 59:34Speaker 4: three seconds. But the reality is they are also watching
- 59:38Speaker 4: every move that you do and they're paying close attention
- 59:41Speaker 4: to how you carry yourself in, you know, the whole environment.
- 59:47Speaker 1: Karen, it was great to have you on the show today.
- 59:49Speaker 1: We hope this isn't the last visit, but the first
- 59:51Speaker 1: of many. I hope so too. Yes, we would love that.
- 59:55Speaker 1: I learn a.
- 59:56Speaker 4: Lot listening to you guys, so I appreciate it greatly
- 1:00:00Speaker 4: being on.
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: The enemy of my enemy is my friend. I love
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: the story about the Jets locker room and the media
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: right there. Good lesson for all.
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: Karen, thanks so much. And I look forward to finishing
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: the book. All right. Tell me what you think.
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: It's got me in. I'm going to visit Vermont at
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: some point now.
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: Man, I could not ask for a better publicist. Thank you.
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: Yep. Thanks, Karen. Thank you. Thank you, Kara. There's Kara Krause.
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: And you can check out her great work and the
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: great work of the new writers currently at sportandstate.com. Continuing
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: to grow, Chad. Loving it. Dom's doing a wonderful job there.
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: A long friend of ours as well, dating back from OutKick.
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: So looking forward to what Sport and State's got coming
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: on the horizon. And getting different types of voices, I think,
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: is always very important for any media company. And go
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: read her intro column.
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: As to what drew her to Clay and to Clay's
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: ideas and to Clay's intro column about sport and state
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: and what it was going to be and why she
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: wanted to get back into the sports media world because
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: of that.
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: Really compelling stuff. She's a really good writer.
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: And again, having the different styles, different viewpoints, not everything
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: always looking and sounding the same, I think is really important.
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: Clay knows that. And that's what you're going to get
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: with Karen at the site.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: So Check it out.
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: Her intro column's up at Sport and State, and thrilled
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: to have her on the show this morning.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: I believe we have a three-leg parlay coming up from
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: Chad Withrow. A little three-leg, a little tripod. Don't feel
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: good about it.
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: I already don't feel good about it after last week's disaster.
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: I got one out of three right last week, and
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: I do better this week.
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: We're about to find out. We'll tell you about Hard
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: Rock Bet, the tripod that is what Chad's bringing to
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: the table today for Hard Rock Bet, and Crockett Coffee,
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: plus Jared Stillman. It's right around the corner here on
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: Hutton with Rowe.
