- 0:02Welcome back to the
- 0:05Daily Ripples Podcast. It's August 19th.
- 0:09Our daily devotional today is called Looking at My Part.
- 0:12I'm Pastor Mike, and I'm going to flip this over to Corey, who's going to
- 0:15read it for us and kick off our discussion today. Hey guys, that was Pastor
- 0:19Mike. You know, thank you. I was kind of falling behind with where we were
- 0:22at, Mike. Uh, I didn't need to know all that, but you know, it's fun
- 0:26though. The Stone. Freedom grows when I stop focusing on what others
- 0:30did and honestly examine my own part.
- 0:34Ripple 1, practical. Today I will resist the urge to justify
- 0:38myself by pointing to someone else's mistakes. I like doing that.
- 0:41Instead, I will ask where I've been selfish, dishonest, fearful,
- 0:44and self-seeking. Growth begins when I take
- 0:48responsibility for what is mine. Ripple 2, spiritual.
- 0:52As I examine my own heart before judging others, the Holy Spirit gives me clarity
- 0:56to see myself truthfully,
- 1:00helping me find a solid foundation for wise decisions and faithful
- 1:04living. The Father calls me to honesty
- 1:09rather than blame, and Jesus teaches me to look inward first.
- 1:14That's interesting. We've talked about this, where we find
- 1:18the great reality deep down within, right? Um,
- 1:23I was reading through, but I was waiting. I was hoping you kicked us off
- 1:25talking about the cornerstones and the, and the keystones and going through that again,
- 1:29because we talk about in there about, uh, you know,
- 1:33taking responsibility. What was I, was I thinking of something? Oh, helping me
- 1:37find a solid foundation. That made me think of your, the way you walk through
- 1:41the stones, right? So the, but the foundation comes first, and that's it.
- 1:45That's interesting. And, you know, nobody likes to My sponsor argues with me
- 1:49a lot about this, so we can talk about it because he might listen to
- 1:52it, he might not. He can't really argue back if he's not here. That's all
- 1:56right. Maybe he will email us at wave@dailyripples.com. I've been waiting on
- 2:00somebody. But it says on the
- 2:04first page, on page 21 of the 12 in 12,
- 2:07so it says, we perceive that only through utter defeat are
- 2:12we able to take our first steps towards liberation and
- 2:16strength. Our admission of our personal powerlessness
- 2:20finally turns out to be the firm bedrock upon which happy and purposeful
- 2:25lives can be built. So you got the firm bedrock, right?
- 2:28Yeah. And that firm bedrock is our admission of powerlessness. Right.
- 2:31So back on page 12 of the big book, and I think this is really
- 2:35cool, and just follow that into, especially when you start doing your Beautiful 9
- 2:38thing. So on page 12,
- 2:42it says, it was only a matter of being
- 2:46willing to believe in a power greater than myself. Neither more was required
- 2:50of me to make my beginning. I saw that growth could start
- 2:54from that point upon a foundation of complete willingness.
- 2:58So you got bedrock and willingness, right? Yeah. So I
- 3:02think that's cool because I'm in construction and a lot of alcoholics
- 3:06are because they couldn't go to college.
- 3:10So on page 47 of the Big Book, it says,
- 3:13it has been repeatedly proven among us that upon
- 3:17this simple cornerstone, a wonderfully effective spiritual structure can be built.
- 3:21And what's the cornerstone? It's the question right now. And you can,
- 3:24I mean, I come into this position right now all the time because it's in
- 3:28We Agnostics and it's not talking about y'all agnostics or
- 3:31I'm agnostic. It's we, because I can be agnostically inclined about a lot of stuff,
- 3:34about my finances, about this, about that,
- 3:38and I'm not going to be fully not agnostic.
- 3:41So the question is, do I now believe, or am I even
- 3:45willing to believe that there's a power greater than myself?
- 3:48As soon as a man can say that he does
- 3:51believe or is willing to believe, we emphatically assure him that he
- 3:55is on his way. It has been repeatedly proven among
- 3:58us that upon this simple cornerstone. So you got bedrock,
- 4:02foundation, cornerstone, and on page 62,
- 4:11So he is the father, we are his children. He is the director,
- 4:16he is the principal, we are his agents. He is the father, we are his
- 4:18children. Most good ideas are simple, Michael. And what's
- 4:21like, and I think about this a lot because I come into conflict with simplicity
- 4:26in my life. You know, I think about 3 pool
- 4:31sticks in the middle of the floor. With plates spinning on top
- 4:34of them, right? And those are humans, right? Because they
- 4:38can crash down at any second. Okay. Right. So if
- 4:42I go down the plate in the pool stick aisle, right, and if this person
- 4:46acts right, this person acts right, this person acts right, I'll get to the finish
- 4:50line, right? But if I got me and God
- 4:55and I go down this road, that's the simple route instead of having to
- 4:58make sure the lights, the pallets spinning, right? And all these
- 5:02different people act right. Well, what if Corey just does right, and trust God through
- 5:05the process and does it this way instead of trusting on all these people,
- 5:09because people fail me eventually. Oh yeah, God never does,
- 5:13right? So it says most God ideas are simple, and this concept was the keystone
- 5:17of the new and triumphant ark through which we passed to freedom. So if you've
- 5:20ever been to the St. Louis Ark and you took out the center of it
- 5:23at the top, that's what a keystone would be. And also in my book,
- 5:27I have my sobriety date beside that cornerstone because the cornerstone is a very,
- 5:32very important piece of a building. So you got bedrock,
- 5:35foundation, cornerstone, and now keystone.
- 5:39And this is the new and triumphant arch through which we pass to freedom.
- 5:42So there's like a check thing at this though on page 75.
- 5:46And I know I'm going through this and this is— but this is important stuff.
- 5:51So on page 75, and this is after you've done a fist up, if you
- 5:55ever do a fist up, it says, Shade Throne.
- 5:59But man, maybe I'll piss somebody off into their fist. That's enough to do it.
- 6:03Yeah, or they'll leave a hate letter. His fault.
- 6:06We got an email for that too. Um,
- 6:09so it says, taking down this book
- 6:14from our shelf, we turned to the page which contains the 12 steps,
- 6:17carefully reading the first 5 proposals. What's the first
- 6:215 proposals? The first 5 steps. Pretty simple. We ask if we have
- 6:26omitted anything. And so I think of, have I omitted anything? Is my first
- 6:29step decision 100%? Do I believe that this program
- 6:33can work for me and can God help me? And am I insane?
- 6:363, made a decision. Have I made that decision to turn my life
- 6:41and my thoughts over the care of God as I understood him?
- 6:43And that's just a decision. But if I do
- 6:47that, have I made the commitment and done everything else in between from 4
- 6:51to 5? So, and then it goes on, for we are building
- 6:55an ark through which we walk a free man at last. A free man
- 6:59is important, right? Yes. Is our work solid so far? Are the stones
- 7:03promptly in place? And we just talked about the stones.
- 7:06Have we skimped on the cement which put in the foundation?
- 7:10And you know, if you're ever following along and listening to this thing, you can
- 7:14put some page numbers down because it's really interesting. Because on
- 7:18page 17, It says, the feeling of having shared in
- 7:21common peril is the one element in the powerful cement which
- 7:25binds us. And here's the warning to you
- 7:29meeting makers, but that in itself would never have held us together, for we
- 7:32are now joined. The tremendous fact for every one of us
- 7:36that we have discovered a common solution. So common problem, common solution,
- 7:40that's the powerful cement which binds us. And then
- 7:44it said, have we tried to make mortar without sand? And that goes on to
- 7:47say, hey, man, Is everything solid? And that's all important because,
- 7:51man, and I like the way things connect.
- 7:55And if you start looking at the way Bill Wilson,
- 7:58he starts talking about building through the third step prayer,
- 8:03and all of this is, what are we building? Well, I'm building my relationship
- 8:07with God and humankind. And what I'm trying to— I think what
- 8:11we're trying to destroy through the process is my ego. Because when
- 8:15I'm, you know, we were talking about this a little bit and I know I've
- 8:19just ranted for a second, but it's okay. I got a little excited since
- 8:23you're like, yeah, let's talk. I kind of handed it to you asking about the
- 8:26stones. Yeah. So, but like, and it says freedom.
- 8:30So like, we're on this triumphant arc for freedom and
- 8:33freedom from what? It's not like, man, I'll tell you, because in the 12
- 8:37and 12, after the 5th step, Like I
- 8:41said, man, so the 5th step is vital because
- 8:44at the beginning of the 5th, at the promise, it says that we begin to
- 8:48have a spiritual experience, right? Sometimes the thought
- 8:52of drink has gone away. And then on page 64,
- 8:56the 12th and 12th, and that's in step 6.
- 9:00And this is just step 6, we're not even to 12 yet. It says,
- 9:04having been granted a perfect release from alcoholism.
- 9:10Man. So let me get there. You got some freedom, right? So,
- 9:13you know, and so I don't think we're talking about drinking anymore. We're talking about
- 9:17freedom from Corey and freedom from myself. Yeah. And so,
- 9:20because I'm in the way and I think, you know, some days
- 9:24a lot of people I know that are really in
- 9:28this program get lost in the fact
- 9:32of it's all about just freedom from theirself. And they forget
- 9:36that they came in here hopeless from drinking.
- 9:40Right. And the primary thing is I came in here from insanity,
- 9:44from the mind and body, right? Because I couldn't quit
- 9:47drinking. And when I did, I kept— started drinking again. And then we'll
- 9:51start making this program into a, I'm working on my personal defects.
- 9:56No. Yeah. And that's what I was just about to say is that, you know,
- 9:59because we started this whole thing talking about looking at my part, you know,
- 10:02going through and having that solid bedrock, having that
- 10:05foundation, you know, keeping the cornerstone in place and,
- 10:08and getting to the point where that keystone can complete the arch
- 10:12that we walk through to freedom. All those things are my part.
- 10:15What is not my part is what everybody
- 10:20has done to me in the past. And what I mean by that is
- 10:24for me to relitigate everybody in my past, that's not what
- 10:28I'm here for. I'm also not here for just,
- 10:32and it's the trend that you were hitting on there at the end, I'm not
- 10:36just here, you know, once I've done all those things and worked through
- 10:40those steps, I'm no longer just here for myself. You know, I came
- 10:43here for myself because I needed the help, right? But then once I have been
- 10:48transformed by the renewing of my mind, to use a biblical
- 10:51way of saying that, once, you know, God has renewed my mind
- 10:55as I work these steps, then my role
- 10:59is not just to show up to a meeting every day so that I
- 11:02can stay sober. That's a very selfish way of looking at it. And that's the
- 11:06consumerism that has gotten into AA the same way it's
- 11:10gotten into the churches. That's why you don't see people inviting friends
- 11:14and associates even to churches as much anymore, because they're just there for them.
- 11:18They're not thinking about who else might need this. They're not
- 11:23carrying the message, you might say.
- 11:26And so I think that that's why it all does play in
- 11:30together. Yeah, I may start out from a place of, I'm here so that I
- 11:34can get well and I can be healed. But once I've worked the steps,
- 11:37then my role flips. And for me to stay well and to stay healed,
- 11:41it means I need to be being the hands and feet of Jesus for somebody.
- 11:44And that's the way I look at it, for somebody else in recovery by carrying
- 11:47that same message to them. If I'm only doing one without the
- 11:51other, then I'm staying stuck in my growth and development, and I'm never going to
- 11:55grow beyond where I am today. And I just
- 11:59think how sad that would be. You know, I mean, it doesn't matter where
- 12:03I am today. If that's, if that's the most growth that I'm
- 12:07ever going to get in life, then that's just sad
- 12:10because there's still more growth to be done. And that's also saying that
- 12:15I don't trust God that there's more in store for me.
- 12:19Yeah. You know, and I think that's, you know, when I come back
- 12:23into this work, right? Yeah. I think that's something, you know, do I believe God
- 12:27can take me further than I am right this present second? And if I don't,
- 12:31man, then what are we doing here, right? You know, because then go do
- 12:35it on your own. You're saying God is nothing. Right. So what I think is
- 12:38cool though, you know, at the end of that arc, so the reason there's no
- 12:42amen after the 3rd step is because of the 7-step prayer,
- 12:45right? And that finishes the arc. It completes the arc, yeah. So it
- 12:49says on the 7th step, it says, my Creator, I'm now willing that you should
- 12:53have all of me, good and bad. And we kind of hit on that,
- 12:55you know, my greatest asset became my greatest defect.
- 13:00I pray that you now remove from me every single defect of character
- 13:04which stands in the way of my usefulness. Not that
- 13:09stands in the way for Corey looking cooler or sounding
- 13:13cooler or being cooler or more charismatic or whatever.
- 13:18For his usefulness to you and my fellows.
- 13:21Grant me strength as I go out here to do your bidding, Amen.
- 13:25And so the most important thing to me is this, is the end of that
- 13:29prayer, to do your bidding. What's the bidding?
- 13:32It's cleaning house and helping others. That's it. And if you look
- 13:36at it in a structural way, after 7, there's 8, 9, 10, 11, 12.
- 13:39There's no other argument there. And if you want to read it, I mean,
- 13:42you know, so cleaning house and working with others. It's a very simple
- 13:45thing, but it's so hard for people. I mean, simple doesn't
- 13:50mean easy. To be simple, it'll be quite difficult. Yeah. You ever get in
- 13:53these clichés of what you've heard
- 13:57in rooms? You'll be like, it's so hard for me to do that,
- 14:00man, and say these things that are really self-deprecating
- 14:05because I'm really not doing that. Right? I'll tell you
- 14:09this. Well, I had a time when I, at one point
- 14:13in recovery where, man, the clichés were getting to me. I hated all of them.
- 14:16Right? But I stuck around long enough to see every single one of them come
- 14:19true. So, well, it's— I think some of them are false because—
- 14:24and just as a— think about this. So it's just your stinking thinking. No,
- 14:28it's not. No, it's not. It's your favorite one. No,
- 14:31it's a thing that people say in the rooms. They say, well, keep loving
- 14:35you until you can love yourself. Yeah,
- 14:39that's wild because you've been— I mean, I'm talking about you.
- 14:42I have been loving me Because it's been all about me
- 14:47for a long time. So I think
- 14:51that the proper way to say that would be, we'll love you until you can
- 14:55love somebody else. Because that's the whole
- 14:58deal, right? Because it's not about me loving me. And I can love
- 15:02me being depressed. I can love me because I'm still about me.
- 15:06Well, you may be serving yourself,
- 15:09right? But that's not the same as loving yourself because you could be
- 15:13serving yourself by following every whim or desire that comes your way. But that's
- 15:17not healthy for you. And that's actually enabling you to continue to
- 15:22chase after false dreams. That's not actually self-love.
- 15:25Self-love is a completely different concept. Man, I thought I was going to get over
- 15:29you. You were not going to get over me after that one, buddy, because we've
- 15:32had this argument before and you can't truly love someone else until you fully
- 15:35love yourself and see yourself the way God sees you.
- 15:38And that is the root of all things. I thought I was going to be—
- 15:40since I got you all hyped up, I thought I was be able to sneak
- 15:43one over on you. And on that note, our prayer for today: Father God,
- 15:46help me focus on my own growth today. Through your
- 15:50Holy Spirit, reveal where I need honesty, humility, and change.
- 15:54Shape my life through the example of Jesus and guide me
- 15:58in doing the next right thing. Amen.
- 16:00Amen.
