- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to press play, where we're going through the less
- 0:02Speaker 1: instellar history of video game movies. I'm Drew Shulman, and
- 0:05Speaker 1: with me is my beef cheek bro Jason Wynn. Now,
- 0:08Speaker 1: whether you're watching along or playing along, it's time to
- 0:10Speaker 1: press play. I think it goes on saying we're both
- 0:19Speaker 1: familiar with Street Fighter as a game. I'm curious to
- 0:21Speaker 1: know how familiar you are with it.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I have not played a lot of Street Fighter
- 0:28Speaker 2: in my life. I think I'm I think my household
- 0:30Speaker 2: is just a Mortal Kombat household, which we will get
- 0:32Speaker 2: into in later.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Is that like the saga Nintendo Split? Are you a
- 0:37Speaker 1: street Fighter or a Mortal Kombat one hundred percent?
- 0:39Speaker 2: Yeah, which is unfortunate if I'm being honest, because I
- 0:42Speaker 2: do like the Street Fighter world. I think like the aesthetics.
- 0:45Speaker 2: I think the legacy that like Street Fighter has left
- 0:48Speaker 2: the world in general is just so much like cooler
- 0:52Speaker 2: to me. But the game mechanics and just the availability.
- 0:55Speaker 2: There's only six main Street Fighter games. I don't know
- 0:58Speaker 2: if you knew that.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Yeah, but like I feel like they've re released everyone,
- 1:02Speaker 1: like even like looking up this movie, I had a
- 1:05Speaker 1: moment where I was like, oh, some of these characters
- 1:07Speaker 1: aren't in Street Fighter Too, which it says it's based
- 1:09Speaker 1: off of, and it's because one of them was only
- 1:11Speaker 1: in Street Fighter to Turbo addition, Whoa, and then the
- 1:15Speaker 1: other characters and the other character who will get to
- 1:18Speaker 1: in a bit later, is just totally made up for
- 1:20Speaker 1: this movie.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Which in the cast of Street Fighter feels unnecessary to do.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Exactly like you you like change the background of certain
- 1:28Speaker 1: characters in ways that like I mean, I'm just gonna
- 1:31Speaker 1: say it's e Honda is Japanese in the games and
- 1:33Speaker 1: here they're like he's Hawaiian. You're like, you know what,
- 1:36Speaker 1: I'm weirdly okay with this because it's still like spreading
- 1:39Speaker 1: diversity and it's still like logical that there'd be suma
- 1:42Speaker 1: wrestlers from Hawaii where Japanese culture is huge because of
- 1:45Speaker 1: like the history. So like, weirdly okay with that one
- 1:48Speaker 1: for once of like weirdly like reverse whitewashing one of
- 1:52Speaker 1: your characters to a better extent.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Absolutely, yeah, they have dallism in this There's a couple
- 1:57Speaker 2: of characters in this movie that I didn't really eyes
- 2:00Speaker 2: were characters. So the fact that they went no, no, no, no,
- 2:03Speaker 2: let's add more shit to this crazy Batchit movie.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Oh yeah, speaking of Batcheit, we will talk about Blankele later.
- 2:12Speaker 1: So for me, I'm that weirdo where there's a third
- 2:15Speaker 1: there's like four fighting games in my life that like
- 2:17Speaker 1: matter and in order of least important to most important.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Street Fighters at the bottom, okay, and it's Mortal Kombat,
- 2:24Speaker 1: uh huh. And then I'm a soul caliber guy.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Wow a deep cut. I was like that big that's
- 2:30Speaker 2: that's that's Coca Cola and pepsi you're putting.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Up out there. Yeah. No, I'm a I'm a I'm
- 2:34Speaker 1: an RC I'm an arc Cola guy, it turns out,
- 2:38Speaker 1: But secretly it's because my number one, the one that
- 2:41Speaker 1: matters the most to me is Capcovers a street Fighter.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Which wait, Marvel versus capcom That's what I meant?
- 2:49Speaker 1: What did I say? Okay?
- 2:50Speaker 2: I was like or a Boris snake eating snake, but yes,
- 2:54Speaker 2: which is basically street Fighter. If do you think because
- 2:58Speaker 2: of this movie, street Fighter is not big girl? Like,
- 3:01Speaker 2: that's kind of crazy to say because everyone knows street Fighter,
- 3:04Speaker 2: everyone knows chun Lee, everyone knows Rio as characters. But
- 3:08Speaker 2: I do feel like maybe this is biased, but I
- 3:10Speaker 2: do feel like Mortal Kombat has been more recent or
- 3:14Speaker 2: has more installments and is more in the zeitgeist. And
- 3:18Speaker 2: do you feel like it's because of this movie?
- 3:20Speaker 1: So I've always said I think the reason Mortal Kombat
- 3:22Speaker 1: got more of its popularity early on was because of
- 3:25Speaker 1: kind of the like violence in video games is like
- 3:28Speaker 1: it was like the first real game where like, ooh,
- 3:30Speaker 1: there's so much blood and violence. Yeah, like Street Fighter.
- 3:34Speaker 1: I don't think there's blood and Street Fighter at least
- 3:36Speaker 1: in the first field you ever seen you in bleed,
- 3:39Speaker 1: So like having that level of like one was like
- 3:41Speaker 1: the edgy team, like, oh, look at how gruesome and
- 3:44Speaker 1: bloody these graphics are. And also I think the characters
- 3:47Speaker 1: in Mortal Kombat were just like slightly more memorable, like
- 3:51Speaker 1: really like when you break down the Street Fighter cast,
- 3:53Speaker 1: it's literally two martial artists in different color geeze, a
- 3:57Speaker 1: sumo wrestler, a soldier, a female soldier, and a female
- 4:03Speaker 1: fighter of some sort of Asian descent who I could
- 4:05Speaker 1: not tell you off top my head. Chinese. Yeah, yeah, okay,
- 4:08Speaker 1: I wasn't sure if it was a specific like background.
- 4:10Speaker 1: It wasn't, but like none of them really like, we're like,
- 4:14Speaker 1: none of them had the scorpion get over here appeal
- 4:17Speaker 1: that like Mortal Kombat.
- 4:18Speaker 2: I see what you're saying. Now, I see what you're saying.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Yeah. So I think it'll be fun, especially that our
- 4:22Speaker 1: next movie is spoiler Mortal Kombat. It'll be fun to
- 4:25Speaker 1: have these two back to back.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Weirdly, Oh, I'm super excited. Yeah, yeah, so, I mean,
- 4:29Speaker 2: speaking of the movie, shall I recap it for us
- 4:31Speaker 2: real quick? Please do so.
- 4:33Speaker 1: In this fictional Southeast Asian nation of Shadowloo in place
- 4:37Speaker 1: of Vietnam, a civil war occurs between the forces of
- 4:40Speaker 1: General m Bison and the Allied Nations led by Colonel
- 4:43Speaker 1: William F. Guile. He is the most American army guy
- 4:47Speaker 1: to ever be American, played by the French just actor
- 4:49Speaker 1: available at the time. M Bison has taken several innocent
- 4:52Speaker 1: workers hostage, as well as Gile's best friend, and via
- 4:55Speaker 1: a live broadcast on TV. Somehow he demands Dials secured
- 4:58Speaker 1: twenty million dollars in ransom for these people in three days.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Of course, Gile refuses that was to track down Bison
- 5:05Speaker 1: and plays Montreal for his crime, which he doesn't. He
- 5:08Speaker 1: kills him. Spoiler but Gile isn't the only one gunning
- 5:11Speaker 1: to take down Bison. Yeah, I'm curious. How does this
- 5:15Speaker 1: differ from the games?
- 5:16Speaker 2: Yeah, what an interesting, interesting film. So there's a couple
- 5:19Speaker 2: of differences low wise and again for some reason, I
- 5:22Speaker 2: haven't played a lot of Street Fighter, but I know
- 5:24Speaker 2: a bit about the lord here. Shadowloo generally speaking, is
- 5:28Speaker 2: the organization. It's like the evil organization that all the
- 5:31Speaker 2: bad guys more or less get into. And the main
- 5:35Speaker 2: differences are the occupations of the good guys, because it's
- 5:40Speaker 2: too far fetched to have martial artists running around to
- 5:44Speaker 2: martial arts tournaments for the sake of marshal arts tournaments
- 5:47Speaker 2: and fighting for the sake of fighting exactly.
- 5:48Speaker 1: It needs to be complicated because reasons.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Yeah, and I will say, as a bit of a
- 5:54Speaker 2: spoiler into our conversation about the movie, I find the
- 5:58Speaker 2: plot charming, which is an adjective I use a lot
- 6:02Speaker 2: in this show, but I find it charming because they
- 6:05Speaker 2: really they really worked like from reverse, they really worked
- 6:09Speaker 2: backwards here they went, Okay, how do we get normal
- 6:14Speaker 2: quote unquote people which is a huge asterisk, especially six
- 6:18Speaker 2: minutes into this movie, But how do we get them
- 6:20Speaker 2: into their com like their video game accurate I must
- 6:23Speaker 2: said comic book accurate costumes, because this movie plays like
- 6:27Speaker 2: a campy comic book movie. They are quite faithful overall
- 6:33Speaker 2: to the source material.
- 6:34Speaker 1: I do feel that is something I will say like
- 6:37Speaker 1: for as much Street Fighter as I have played, mostly
- 6:39Speaker 1: through Marvel versus Capcom, Yeah, there is like every character
- 6:43Speaker 1: was immediately recognizable, with the exception of like maybe one
- 6:47Speaker 1: but I just don't know that character. Yeah.
- 6:49Speaker 2: I feel like Street Fighter was an interesting one because
- 6:53Speaker 2: unlike the Mortal Kombat games, they that the plot doesn't
- 6:57Speaker 2: matter as much the Mortal Kombat once like several layers
- 7:02Speaker 2: of time travel and so and so forth. It is
- 7:04Speaker 2: basically the gist of this movie, which is some good
- 7:07Speaker 2: guys who have no relation to each other all have
- 7:11Speaker 2: ties and connections to the big bad guys. So they
- 7:13Speaker 2: team up and maybe make relationships with one another to
- 7:17Speaker 2: fight evil, crazy organization. That's what it boils down to. Yeah,
- 7:22Speaker 2: And speaking of video game lore and the history of
- 7:27Speaker 2: Street Fighter, if you've been living on the rock, if
- 7:29Speaker 2: you go, yeah, I know a chun Lee, I know
- 7:31Speaker 2: or Reu, but you don't know necessarily what the Street
- 7:33Speaker 2: Fighter games are about. Here's my video game recap please
- 7:37Speaker 2: so introduced to arcades in nineteen eighty seven, Street Fighter
- 7:41Speaker 2: had you control the protagonist Reu with an option for
- 7:44Speaker 2: a secondary player of Ken Masters is Bro enemy for
- 7:49Speaker 2: his friend of me from America, a real double dragon
- 7:52Speaker 2: situation if you will listen to that episode of press play.
- 7:55Speaker 2: But after a failed attempt in a beat them Up
- 7:57Speaker 2: sequel which is now known as Final Fight the video
- 8:00Speaker 2: game series, they went and changed it all up, flipped
- 8:03Speaker 2: the script, changed the world in nineteen ninety one with
- 8:05Speaker 2: Street Fighter two, the very first game to feature one
- 8:08Speaker 2: oh one fight system with different characters with get this,
- 8:13Speaker 2: different fighting styles, all of which had like maybe thirty
- 8:17Speaker 2: playable combos that were unique to them. So, needless to say,
- 8:21Speaker 2: Street Fighter is an absolute staple. It is stuck around.
- 8:25Speaker 2: It's Capcom's second most popular series after Resident Evil and
- 8:30Speaker 2: has contributed to over a billion dollars in arcade cabinet
- 8:33Speaker 2: sales alone, and Street Fighter two has sold over ten
- 8:37Speaker 2: billion dollars by its fucking self, which is insane. Damn Yeah,
- 8:42Speaker 2: that's because, asdre mentioned before, there's only six main games.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Street Fighter six as of recording, came out last year.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Because it's January twenty twenty five. Now, but I'll just
- 8:51Speaker 2: list off some of my favorite street Fighter two remixes
- 8:54Speaker 2: street Fighter two, street Fighter two, Champion Edition, street Fighter two, Turbo,
- 8:58Speaker 2: Super street Fighter two, street Fighter to Turbos because they
- 9:02Speaker 2: did it again. I don't know how. I don't know.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Street Fighter Alpha two is also street Fighter two or
- 9:08Speaker 2: a sequel to Alpha, that's probably what that is. Hyper
- 9:12Speaker 2: street Fighter two, like ten years afterwards, and then just
- 9:15Speaker 2: in twenty seventeen, Ultra street Fighter two. Those are only
- 9:18Speaker 2: the ones that I can suss out. Our street Fighter too.
- 9:21Speaker 2: By the way, if you're like, oh, but what about
- 9:23Speaker 2: the Marvel versus Capcom Fighting Collection Capcom Fighting Collection two,
- 9:27Speaker 2: it has street Fighters too, I don't fucking know. It
- 9:30Speaker 2: probably does. It's a lot, It's a lot.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Oh my god. That is one of my favorite memes.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Like I think it's like Kingdom Hearts and street Fighter,
- 9:37Speaker 1: just like the games where it's like, let's just repackage
- 9:39Speaker 1: of the game with new content, but not change the name,
- 9:42Speaker 1: just append more things to it.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I do think that which one was. I said,
- 9:49Speaker 2: Super street Fighter to Turbo fucking insane.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Yeah, oh my god, Hyper, It's like, oh my god,
- 9:54Speaker 1: how many adjectives could you add to this?
- 9:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I love it. This series has already broken me.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Play has already broken me three episodes in Yay. I
- 10:03Speaker 2: can't tell if I love this or I hate this.
- 10:05Speaker 1: And I think that's a good place to be because
- 10:06Speaker 1: I feel like looking back, like I said, so many
- 10:08Speaker 1: of these movies aren't good, but like going back with
- 10:11Speaker 1: the intent of, like, let's just give it a chance,
- 10:13Speaker 1: let's see what we can glean from this has made
- 10:15Speaker 1: them more enjoyable almost.
- 10:17Speaker 2: And it's the fact that predecessing this. You know, I've
- 10:21Speaker 2: seen you know, The Bear, I've seen Chogun. I know,
- 10:23Speaker 2: I know what modern cinema is like nowadays, you know.
- 10:27Speaker 2: But predecessing this, we've seen the Super Mario Bros. Movie
- 10:30Speaker 2: and Double Dragon Double Dragon, which I did not know
- 10:34Speaker 2: existed until doing this podcast.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, let's keep the let's keep the bar high.
- 10:39Speaker 1: We're hoping we'll get the movie one day that is
- 10:41Speaker 1: as good as The Bear. Okay, So this movie right
- 10:49Speaker 1: away starts off with something that I think in the
- 10:52Speaker 1: moment feels so out of left field, but like they
- 10:55Speaker 1: do explain it away by the end, and that is
- 10:57Speaker 1: Chun Lee is just on the scene news correspondent in
- 11:00Speaker 1: the middle of a war zone.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, one of the most the if not the
- 11:05Speaker 2: most iconic character of the series, straight off the bat
- 11:08Speaker 2: reckconning her. But I think I think it's played by
- 11:11Speaker 2: but by the way, the amazing Mignah when oh my gosh,
- 11:14Speaker 2: I'm familiar voice of Mulan in Marvel in Star Wars.
- 11:20Speaker 1: Yeah, she's she's amazing.
- 11:21Speaker 2: Uh. But I texted you about what was the what
- 11:24Speaker 2: was the time marker? I think I said six minutes
- 11:26Speaker 2: and forty secondso and I was like, Drew, this is
- 11:29Speaker 2: fucking insane, and I think I'm having fun.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Everyone go insane, have fun.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Yeah, they start off with the made up country of Shadowloo.
- 11:39Speaker 2: You know it's Gomez Adams as.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Em I know, what what a get? What a get?
- 11:46Speaker 2: He's playing it to the one hundred and tenth degree
- 11:49Speaker 2: as well, like if if his like rip. I think
- 11:54Speaker 2: he passed away at a very early He passed.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Away very early stomach cancer. Literally right after filming this movie.
- 11:59Speaker 1: He never saw a co Oh wow, I did not know.
- 12:02Speaker 1: But he plays it. I think he's the best actor and.
- 12:06Speaker 2: He plays like almost like a proto like Red Skull
- 12:09Speaker 2: before the mcu days. It's the most accurate. The costumes,
- 12:14Speaker 2: by the way, in this movie are insane.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Oh yeah, like and I love the fact that I
- 12:18Speaker 1: put this in the notes had to make sure it
- 12:19Speaker 1: got shared. Is they credit the costume designer who I
- 12:23Speaker 1: didn't think they're named, and I apologies, but they are
- 12:25Speaker 1: so talented. But then they separately credit A. Marilyn Vance
- 12:29Speaker 1: specifically for m Bison's costume, and I just think that
- 12:33Speaker 1: it's such a like like it really is. I think
- 12:36Speaker 1: beyond him as an actor is the standout piece of
- 12:39Speaker 1: this movie. His outfit is everything about him. Even his
- 12:42Speaker 1: outfit is so elaborate and perfect it's like it deserves
- 12:46Speaker 1: it accurate to it.
- 12:47Speaker 2: See. And the weird thing about it too is he's
- 12:51Speaker 2: got like he's got goons that are like dressed up
- 12:53Speaker 2: as well, and they're pretty good like hydra henchmen kind
- 12:56Speaker 2: of looking dudes. But at the same time, this this
- 13:00Speaker 2: movie does weird thing where it plays in camp, but
- 13:02Speaker 2: it also kind of wanted to plays it seriously. Like
- 13:04Speaker 2: Guile's like a military special forces like commander, like protagonist
- 13:08Speaker 2: guy in classic of like the eighties early nineties, and
- 13:12Speaker 2: m Bison is like this evil dictator guy, but he's
- 13:15Speaker 2: got goons, you know. Oh yeah, playing it like a
- 13:18Speaker 2: Power Rangers episode, Like you might expect them because they
- 13:21Speaker 2: look like they're coming out of Power Rangers episode, but
- 13:24Speaker 2: at the same time they kind of do because there's
- 13:26Speaker 2: jokes all the time.
- 13:28Speaker 1: It's such a weird, like they've they've ridden the line
- 13:30Speaker 1: of camp so well, and like, had they actually gotten
- 13:33Speaker 1: like an American actor to play Guile and like play
- 13:37Speaker 1: it the way that he does play it in this movie,
- 13:39Speaker 1: it would be too serious, too dry, and too like
- 13:42Speaker 1: military propaganda. But the fact they went for Jean Claude
- 13:46Speaker 1: van dam who is blatantly not American, doesn't even ride it,
- 13:50Speaker 1: is like it makes it feel like a can't be
- 13:53Speaker 1: character when it probably wasn't meant to be.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's a great point. I think that's
- 13:57Speaker 2: a great point. There was parts of this movie where
- 14:00Speaker 2: I was like, Wow, John Cloud fan damn. I don't
- 14:03Speaker 2: like him. I don't like I don't like what he's doing,
- 14:06Speaker 2: I don't like his presence. I can see why he
- 14:09Speaker 2: didn't make it out of like the eighties as an
- 14:12Speaker 2: action star or household name like. But there was other
- 14:15Speaker 2: parts where it was like, no, he's doing this exactly
- 14:17Speaker 2: how he's supposed to do it. He's supposed to be
- 14:19Speaker 2: doing it. There is one part I think you have
- 14:21Speaker 2: some notes about this. I have some notes about this.
- 14:23Speaker 2: But during a newscast, they're interviewing Gile about the situation
- 14:28Speaker 2: with m Bison, this evil dictator. What are your thoughts
- 14:30Speaker 2: on him?
- 14:30Speaker 1: Right?
- 14:31Speaker 2: And Bison's watching it live. But then m Bison starts
- 14:34Speaker 2: talking to Gile and then they start having like a
- 14:37Speaker 2: FaceTime conversation. How it happening through news which listen, I'll
- 14:42Speaker 2: suspend disbelief. There's fucking this crazy technology, g I Joe,
- 14:45Speaker 2: shit happening. I'll give you FaceTime. But then I was like,
- 14:49Speaker 2: wait a minute, So Gile's talking through the TV. If
- 14:52Speaker 2: you're just watching like the Channel five fucking news, what's
- 14:55Speaker 2: happening here? You're just watching a one way conversation with
- 14:57Speaker 2: Gile a talking to him.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Assume it's the other round. I think everyone's seeing m
- 15:01Speaker 1: Bison have a one way conversation and only Byson can
- 15:04Speaker 1: hear Guyle, which I think I think is almost even weirder. Yeah, yeah, yeah, no,
- 15:09Speaker 1: it's great.
- 15:09Speaker 2: And then while he's talking to him, by the way,
- 15:11Speaker 2: because again they're like, god, damn it, William F. Gyle whatever,
- 15:15Speaker 2: You're the goddamn best at what there is and your
- 15:17Speaker 2: sealed Team six and all this other stuff. And then
- 15:19Speaker 2: when he talks to m Bison, he does like a
- 15:21Speaker 2: he does like an elbow slap. Yes, I'm gonna get you.
- 15:25Speaker 2: So he's like a he's like a professional wrestler cutting
- 15:27Speaker 2: a promo and he's like, you better watch your ass
- 15:29Speaker 2: Saturday night. I'm coming for you. It's like, all right,
- 15:33Speaker 2: so what's happening?
- 15:34Speaker 1: Oh my god, because then.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Not when as Chunnley is playing a straight fucking lace,
- 15:40Speaker 2: hard hitting news oh my god, in.
- 15:43Speaker 1: The fact and like the fact that we reveal it
- 15:45Speaker 1: that she's like like, I'm confused. Is she actually a
- 15:48Speaker 1: news anchor it was this whole thing fake? Or did
- 15:50Speaker 1: she actually get into news work her way up to
- 15:53Speaker 1: hopefully get the assignment to be at m Bison's so
- 15:56Speaker 1: that she can, you know, like continue her master plan
- 15:59Speaker 1: of revenge or exactly where's this whole thing faked? I
- 16:02Speaker 1: don't know now.
- 16:03Speaker 2: No, no, no, it's it's the second one because they were
- 16:05Speaker 2: doing the Dark Night before the Dark fucking Night, all right,
- 16:07Speaker 2: she's the joke.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Yeah, she's her.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Because her plan is because m Bison's like this evil
- 16:16Speaker 2: dictator who was ruined people's lives or whatever the fuck,
- 16:18Speaker 2: and her her dad was a magistrate, which what that
- 16:21Speaker 2: is I don't actually know. I've only ever seen it
- 16:23Speaker 2: in old Chinese movies. Is she also from the eighteen hundreds?
- 16:28Speaker 2: Is a question that I have. But she goes, Okay,
- 16:31Speaker 2: so you killed my father. So I went into news
- 16:34Speaker 2: for ten years. For ten years of my life, I
- 16:36Speaker 2: devoted to being in the news, so I could what
- 16:39Speaker 2: interview you? Like, what's the point? What what's the How
- 16:43Speaker 2: does news get you into dictator zone?
- 16:45Speaker 3: There?
- 16:45Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Like, I guess it's a
- 16:47Speaker 1: really specific career path, like you your like quarterly reviews,
- 16:50Speaker 1: like where do you see some of ten years interviewing
- 16:52Speaker 1: m Bison, who, by the way, has been at this
- 16:55Speaker 1: for twenty years according to the movie.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Hell yeah, brother, Yeah, numbers out the window man. Oh yeah,
- 17:01Speaker 2: early earlier, I think you said you might have said
- 17:04Speaker 2: twenty million dollars is what he was asking for? Ye
- 17:07Speaker 2: he was billion billion nineteen Yeah, it was definitely billion
- 17:10Speaker 2: back in nineteen ninety.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Oh my god. Yeah. I also love the power move
- 17:14Speaker 1: that like he's watching this broadcast of Guile based this report,
- 17:17Speaker 1: but how evil he is not just like watching it,
- 17:20Speaker 1: but has it on like multiple screens around his like
- 17:22Speaker 1: evil layer in front of his hostages who are in
- 17:25Speaker 1: a pit in the floor of his main office. It's awesome,
- 17:29Speaker 1: like it is. It is like Power Rangers level of
- 17:32Speaker 1: campy villain like accoutrama and set design for a character
- 17:36Speaker 1: who is like I'm basically trying to combine Mussolini and
- 17:40Speaker 1: like Hitler into one character for you.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Yeah, And I think that's why it's really interesting that
- 17:45Speaker 2: you say that too, because that's it's not that much
- 17:48Speaker 2: more dumb or sophisticated than what was happening in Street Fighter.
- 17:54Speaker 2: If anything, it punched it up like story wise, the details,
- 17:57Speaker 2: and then I think, like Street Fighter three, four and
- 18:01Speaker 2: five is where you start getting into actual lore bits
- 18:03Speaker 2: and stuff with the all the things that I said.
- 18:06Speaker 2: But it's it's interesting that as far as accuracy goes,
- 18:12Speaker 2: and as far as like keeping close to the source
- 18:14Speaker 2: material compared to what we've had before, while as as
- 18:17Speaker 2: dumb and campy as it is, it's kind of perfect.
- 18:21Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like they were essentially. I think it's that
- 18:23Speaker 1: same issue we've seen with the past movies where they're
- 18:25Speaker 1: tasked with, like take these characters who are very one
- 18:28Speaker 1: dimensional and make them fit in a three dimensional world
- 18:32Speaker 1: in a logical way. And while we can make fun
- 18:35Speaker 1: of like chun Lee being a reporter, it's like, well,
- 18:37Speaker 1: we need an excuse for her to be here. You know,
- 18:40Speaker 1: Gyle's easy. It's a war zone. Even like while Ryu
- 18:43Speaker 1: and Ken as like illegal gun smugglers who are actually
- 18:48Speaker 1: con artists is like a really bizarre poll. I mean,
- 18:51Speaker 1: it gets them into the scene.
- 18:53Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, everything everything about this movie in the exposition
- 18:57Speaker 2: part I think was all to lead up to the
- 19:00Speaker 2: ends where they're like, Okay, well, how do we get
- 19:03Speaker 2: Ryu and Ken into like geeze without making it look
- 19:07Speaker 2: like they're hokey and dumb. We'll make them dress up
- 19:09Speaker 2: as the henchmen. How do we make them be the henchmen?
- 19:13Speaker 1: Oh?
- 19:13Speaker 2: Because they were double crossing and playing this like and
- 19:17Speaker 2: who double crosses smugglers?
- 19:20Speaker 1: Four dimensional going on here, And I'm impressed by that.
- 19:23Speaker 1: I'll give them that much.
- 19:25Speaker 2: They even give Chunley like a situation where she might
- 19:29Speaker 2: be sexually assaulted by and Bison, and that's all to
- 19:33Speaker 2: give her not only her weird skimpy dress that doesn't
- 19:36Speaker 2: make any sense for this strong, independent, like female character
- 19:39Speaker 2: to be in. But then they even get it down
- 19:41Speaker 2: to the fact that like he's kind of into sex
- 19:44Speaker 2: slave shit, so she gets her like awesome cuff links things.
- 19:48Speaker 2: They're even thinking about that, Oh, I can't tell whether
- 19:52Speaker 2: I want to give it props or like maybe we.
- 19:55Speaker 1: Don't need the cup links.
- 19:56Speaker 2: Maybe that's just you know, like that's fine, like just
- 19:58Speaker 2: drop it.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Like it really feels like they almost want like too
- 20:02Speaker 1: hard in one direction of like, oh, yeah, we got
- 20:05Speaker 1: through the bite of the scene. Yeah, but can we
- 20:06Speaker 1: get her into that outfit? Yeah? But how do we
- 20:08Speaker 1: even get like cuffs on her? Let's just make it
- 20:09Speaker 1: a weird bedsm thing for no reason, Okay, Like like
- 20:14Speaker 1: even I Honda like losing his shirt because he got
- 20:17Speaker 1: like whipped like crazy and it's all ripped up in
- 20:19Speaker 1: the backs. When he goes to fight, he just tosses
- 20:20Speaker 1: it off, because yeah, you might not otherwise toss your
- 20:23Speaker 1: shirt off before a fight, but it makes sense.
- 20:26Speaker 2: My otherwise take off his shirt is a crazy thought
- 20:31Speaker 2: going into these sets of movies.
- 20:32Speaker 1: That were about to get into ju true so much
- 20:36Speaker 1: that very very valid point. I also just need to
- 20:40Speaker 1: There's one very specific moment, and it's when in that
- 20:44Speaker 1: like back and forth interview because I'm still there, when
- 20:47Speaker 1: Guile like speaks to Bison directly for a second before
- 20:51Speaker 1: it's actually establaged that they're talking. The facial expression on
- 20:55Speaker 1: Bison is like oh, oh, Like there's like oh, there's
- 20:58Speaker 1: like a Tim Curry level of like joy in his
- 21:01Speaker 1: face that I could not understand. But it gave me
- 21:03Speaker 1: so much joy to see him like perk up in
- 21:05Speaker 1: his eyes. It was like almost a little bit of
- 21:07Speaker 1: a crush going on, and I love it.
- 21:09Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a lot, there's a lot of that energy here.
- 21:11Speaker 2: Why I will I will say one of the energies
- 21:13Speaker 2: that I was kind of missing is between Rieu and Ken.
- 21:18Speaker 2: There are these moments because they're they're they're bro smugglers, right,
- 21:22Speaker 2: and if we're being honest, it's a very It's again
- 21:25Speaker 2: it's a very double Dragon situation. Coming from the Mayo Bros.
- 21:29Speaker 2: To Double Dragon to this, you would think that they'd
- 21:32Speaker 2: be very BROI there is one part I'll skip ahead
- 21:34Speaker 2: to the later in the movie. There's one part where
- 21:37Speaker 2: they're like in the secret organization and there's this there's
- 21:40Speaker 2: a map that they need to pay attention to, and
- 21:42Speaker 2: Ken goes to re You and he's like, did you
- 21:43Speaker 2: get the map? And where He's like, I only got
- 21:45Speaker 2: the right side of it, and Ken goes, good, I
- 21:47Speaker 2: got the left side, which is like the most broie
- 21:50Speaker 2: they ever get in the movie.
- 21:52Speaker 1: It's also what a stupid thing. I saw a map,
- 21:56Speaker 1: but I only focused on exactly fifty percent of it
- 21:59Speaker 1: because I knew I wouldn't.
- 22:00Speaker 2: Have time good because I also thought to think of
- 22:03Speaker 2: the other half of that fifty percent.
- 22:05Speaker 1: We're perfect. It's like part of me is like I
- 22:08Speaker 1: want it to be a reference to something, but I
- 22:10Speaker 1: know it's not. It's just a really weird line.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Like you can you can really give this movie credit
- 22:16Speaker 2: and be like, well they've been at it for so
- 22:18Speaker 2: long that Reu knows he's the left side and Ken
- 22:21Speaker 2: knows he's the right side of all things in their life,
- 22:23Speaker 2: you know, or.
- 22:23Speaker 1: Something like that.
- 22:24Speaker 2: God once, we're not gonna give that movie that much
- 22:26Speaker 2: credit because they don't establish that prehand. Ever, And two,
- 22:31Speaker 2: I wanted more shit like that, you know, like in
- 22:34Speaker 2: both Double Dragon and the Super Mario Brothers movies. I
- 22:37Speaker 2: I know it's not just about Reo and Ken, but
- 22:40Speaker 2: it kind of is like, there are they not our protector?
- 22:42Speaker 2: Is there like six different protagonists.
- 22:44Speaker 1: That's the weird thing. I think if you had to
- 22:45Speaker 1: like pick one our like main character, I guess it's Guile, Yeah,
- 22:51Speaker 1: even though I feel like he's probably like the least
- 22:53Speaker 1: interesting and like weirdly not present for a chunk of
- 22:56Speaker 1: the movie in the middle. Yeah, so I would say
- 22:59Speaker 1: that I guess our actual protagonist should be Chun Lee
- 23:02Speaker 1: should be. But I think they're trying to make it
- 23:04Speaker 1: Ken and Ryu more and more every time, and it's fine.
- 23:07Speaker 2: It's fine, Like a lot of characters get pushed off
- 23:09Speaker 2: to the side because there's a ton like Bao Rag
- 23:12Speaker 2: and e Honda are not going to get the spotlight
- 23:14Speaker 2: because they're being honest, they're kind of bit characters and
- 23:16Speaker 2: they're kind of and all this other stuff, and that's
- 23:18Speaker 2: totally fine with me personally. I think this movie tries
- 23:23Speaker 2: to be super low accurate, which is honestly really cool
- 23:26Speaker 2: for the Street Fighter fans. I think it does a
- 23:28Speaker 2: lot because I think they were writing on the fact
- 23:30Speaker 2: that they weren't going to get a second movie, which
- 23:32Speaker 2: they did it so They're like, let's just put everything
- 23:35Speaker 2: out there all at once. Yeah, I wish I bought
- 23:38Speaker 2: Ken and Rio Moore's what I'm trying to say here.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I also need to go into, like again talking
- 23:43Speaker 1: about the like weird, like the zany factor of some
- 23:47Speaker 1: of these moments. So we've also got this this little
- 23:51Speaker 1: like b plot that we don't really touch on. Musch
- 23:53Speaker 1: tll the very end, which is Gile's best friend. I
- 23:56Speaker 1: think his name is Charles Blanca, who has been kidded
- 23:59Speaker 1: Carlos Carlos. Sorry, I think he calls him Charlie at
- 24:02Speaker 1: some point too, like it's his nickname. He's just like,
- 24:04Speaker 1: fuck it, I need I need to make you sound
- 24:06Speaker 1: more American like me. Carlos is too Unamerican for me.
- 24:11Speaker 1: For me, John smokes his cigarette, smokes his cigarette, puts
- 24:14Speaker 1: his back out, and there's arms. His brain walks off.
- 24:18Speaker 1: But we then get so we have him like locked
- 24:20Speaker 1: up in this thing where they're just gonna show him
- 24:21Speaker 1: like horrible footage to curse his brain and then fill
- 24:25Speaker 1: him with just the most gatorade ass looking juices I've
- 24:28Speaker 1: ever seen.
- 24:31Speaker 2: Anabolic something or other, and then just mutant jeans jeans
- 24:36Speaker 2: jeans hang around like the dunes.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Like two of each. You know, you have to have
- 24:42Speaker 1: a good balance of your mutant jeans and your green
- 24:45Speaker 1: your ectoplasm coolers.
- 24:48Speaker 2: That's how they Yeah, that's what they inject into him.
- 24:51Speaker 2: They they give him the oranges, the new clock treatment.
- 24:55Speaker 2: And again it's gotta be because it's a kid's movie.
- 24:58Speaker 2: But at the same time, there's a lot of blood
- 24:59Speaker 2: and in this movie not as much kung fu fighting
- 25:02Speaker 2: as I would have liked.
- 25:03Speaker 1: Yeah, like they really like they cram it all at
- 25:05Speaker 1: the end. They're like, the end goal is gonna be
- 25:07Speaker 1: the crazy street fighter style fighting, but until then we
- 25:10Speaker 1: can do other shit, including guns and murder a.
- 25:12Speaker 2: Lot lots of guns and murder man. But yeah, they
- 25:15Speaker 2: they they would. It's it's fairly tame. Like in the movie,
- 25:18Speaker 2: they're like, oh my god, how how what is this
- 25:22Speaker 2: stuff that you're feeding into me? And and Bison being
- 25:24Speaker 2: so evil goes this is educational content, is all it is.
- 25:28Speaker 2: But he's a real human being. That's why he's fighting
- 25:30Speaker 2: against it and reacting this way. But really, truly, maybe
- 25:33Speaker 2: it's because we live in twenty twenty five. It's just
- 25:35Speaker 2: like historical footage of war.
- 25:39Speaker 1: This is Sunday night on TikTok for me. Yeah, dude,
- 25:42Speaker 1: that's that's just on TV. I don't know what you mean.
- 25:46Speaker 2: The reverse of which, the antidote of which, if you
- 25:49Speaker 2: want to talk about this, Drew is of course weddings.
- 25:52Speaker 1: Yes, it's weddings, children laughing, and like animals. You know,
- 25:57Speaker 1: Martin Luther King, you can't wellkay, of course they show
- 26:02Speaker 1: at some point in the initial one when do you see
- 26:04Speaker 1: a manga shot in the head and Hitler? So the
- 26:06Speaker 1: reverse is people getting married and having children and MLK.
- 26:10Speaker 1: So you know what at least they like from an
- 26:12Speaker 1: incredibly broad perspective, they know what good is. Yeah, Oh,
- 26:17Speaker 1: there's dolphins. There's dolphins. Can't for the dolphins. That was
- 26:21Speaker 1: the I knew I was missing one of like it's
- 26:23Speaker 1: in my notes, you're somewhere now.
- 26:24Speaker 2: This movie, this movie is a really long Power Rangers episode,
- 26:27Speaker 2: which I think I would forgive truly. There are some
- 26:31Speaker 2: melodramatic moments that that kill the moment that this movie
- 26:34Speaker 2: broke for me and I was like, all right. Was
- 26:37Speaker 2: pretty early on there's this prison escape scene again Rio
- 26:42Speaker 2: and Ken bad guys uh and they escape a prison
- 26:46Speaker 2: and shoot our protagonist Gyle, I suppose, I suppose showing
- 26:51Speaker 2: they really are bad people, and John Claude van Dam
- 26:54Speaker 2: goes down in super slow motion. I've never seen this
- 26:58Speaker 2: before in my life. I've watched the Zack Snyder film
- 27:01Speaker 2: or two. But good googlely Moogly.
- 27:04Speaker 1: This is brutal.
- 27:05Speaker 2: And they just treat John Claude van Dam with so
- 27:08Speaker 2: much reverence, like.
- 27:09Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't.
- 27:11Speaker 2: It's like I know, there's a close up and I
- 27:13Speaker 2: know he's gotta say a quippie thing in it's the
- 27:14Speaker 2: early nineties, but good lord, they like fucking they zoom
- 27:17Speaker 2: in and pan on it and give him the time
- 27:20Speaker 2: of his life to say three words like it's so much,
- 27:23Speaker 2: it's so much.
- 27:24Speaker 1: It's again, it's like it's the it's the camp factor,
- 27:27Speaker 1: it's the we need to make this as dramatic as possible.
- 27:29Speaker 1: We need to make sure like you, like you as
- 27:31Speaker 1: an audience might not know Gyle's the main character yet,
- 27:34Speaker 1: but we're gonna make him air quotes die. He lives, surprised,
- 27:38Speaker 1: but like we're gonna make sure you know this is important,
- 27:42Speaker 1: that he is dead, and that it's gonna be a
- 27:43Speaker 1: critical thing to everyone, and like you know, and Bison
- 27:46Speaker 1: finds out and it's disappointed to fight him, you know,
- 27:49Speaker 1: like that's a big deal.
- 27:51Speaker 2: He does have a recurring bit throughout the movie that
- 27:53Speaker 2: is quite good that he like loves the thrill and.
- 27:55Speaker 1: The honor of fighting.
- 27:57Speaker 2: God, he just Adams. I forgot his real it's Raoul Julia. God,
- 28:02Speaker 2: he's so fuck.
- 28:04Speaker 1: We Also, I love his first two air quote fights
- 28:07Speaker 1: against the other two random soldiers that come up in
- 28:09Speaker 1: the hostage situation where it's like a three second tussle
- 28:12Speaker 1: and then just net crack. Oh another one neck crack.
- 28:16Speaker 1: It's like like just cracking their necks like they're freaking
- 28:20Speaker 1: like bottles of coke, just twisting them open.
- 28:22Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's awesome. Also, uh, do you think this
- 28:25Speaker 2: is a good time to highlight as well? Throughout and
- 28:27Speaker 2: Bison scenes, he's also accompanied by two henchmen yes, uh,
- 28:31Speaker 2: known street fighter characters I think Jay and Zangief Zangif Yes, yeah,
- 28:37Speaker 2: Zanki being like super well known, very popular, right of course,
- 28:41Speaker 2: very very recognizable. Dj I had no fucking clue until
- 28:45Speaker 2: the very end.
- 28:46Speaker 1: Oh yeah, he is up there with Like I it
- 28:49Speaker 1: was literally going through like the cast a few times
- 28:51Speaker 1: where I was like, which of these are characters versus
- 28:53Speaker 1: which ones were made up for the movie, And like,
- 28:56Speaker 1: I'll be honest, the fact that DJ was a person
- 28:58Speaker 1: of color made me go, he's probably a character and
- 29:00Speaker 1: not just some random that's really do you know?
- 29:03Speaker 2: What it was for me was this is a black
- 29:05Speaker 2: guy with a super long, random ass rat tail. What
- 29:09Speaker 2: the fuck is going on there?
- 29:14Speaker 1: Oh that is funny. That's gotta be a guy.
- 29:17Speaker 2: And so but like it I didn't recognize as TJ.
- 29:19Speaker 2: Like I was like, is that DJ? Because this Jamaican
- 29:22Speaker 2: accent shows up once in the movie.
- 29:24Speaker 1: Oh yeah, it's so like there was one I like Jamaican,
- 29:27Speaker 1: Like did I just not notice it before? Movie doesn't
- 29:32Speaker 1: give a ship.
- 29:32Speaker 2: It's like, we gotta put TJ in.
- 29:34Speaker 1: I guess. I also if we can talk DJ for
- 29:36Speaker 1: a second. It's the way it's this last scene with
- 29:39Speaker 1: Bison or Bison's like, you know, like I have my
- 29:41Speaker 1: good men with me and we'll recoup, we'll find her
- 29:43Speaker 1: way and DJ is just like walking aways so funny.
- 29:48Speaker 2: DJ's one of the funniest bits in the entire movie.
- 29:50Speaker 2: I legitimately laughed, not because this movie is bad, but
- 29:53Speaker 2: those the comedic scenes in this movie are legitimately very funny,
- 29:57Speaker 2: oddly placed.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Yeah, oh my god, I think it's the it's for
- 30:04Speaker 1: the most part, it's m Bison's computer just having these
- 30:07Speaker 1: like weird witty one liners. But like even early in
- 30:11Speaker 1: the movie when we first meet like Ken and Ryu
- 30:13Speaker 1: and they go to like they show up at like whatever,
- 30:15Speaker 1: this like shop where they're gonna deal the guns, and
- 30:17Speaker 1: it's like, no one can tell us that we have
- 30:19Speaker 1: a curfew, and then immediately, with perfect timing, the siren
- 30:22Speaker 1: there's a curfew. It's maybe selly, it's like it really
- 30:28Speaker 1: like it's like it feels like someone went through it,
- 30:30Speaker 1: like after being like we could throw some jokes in here,
- 30:32Speaker 1: and like the fact that half the jokes are just
- 30:34Speaker 1: like a disembodied voice in the background of the computer.
- 30:38Speaker 1: We literally have the guy from Good Morning Vietnam saying
- 30:43Speaker 1: good morning Shanalou like they actually got him to come
- 30:46Speaker 1: do it. Oh shoot, I did not know that. Yeah,
- 30:48Speaker 1: like that to me is hilarious.
- 30:53Speaker 2: Yeah, dude, I this movie is all over the fucking shop.
- 30:56Speaker 2: I think speaking of characters, because we did just mention
- 30:58Speaker 2: DJ and all that. Yes, I think you have some
- 31:00Speaker 2: thoughts about Chun Lee's two buds because there's always two
- 31:04Speaker 2: buds in this movie.
- 31:04Speaker 1: I don't know why they were again, like it's like,
- 31:07Speaker 1: did we need them? Like, I think Chunley could have
- 31:09Speaker 1: been solo, but you wanted to bring in other characters.
- 31:11Speaker 1: And yeah, I genuinely think one of the better fight
- 31:13Speaker 1: scenes in this movie is the Honda versus Zange fight,
- 31:18Speaker 1: which is a good fight on its own. It's a
- 31:20Speaker 1: good fight on its own and only made funnier by
- 31:23Speaker 1: the like editing.
- 31:24Speaker 2: Yeah, sure, yeah, yeah. So so what Drews referring to
- 31:26Speaker 2: is chun Lee's camera operators and buddies are both e
- 31:29Speaker 2: Honda and bow Rog. For those unfamiliar, e Hondi is
- 31:33Speaker 2: a Suma wrestler. He's played by a Hawaiian actor in
- 31:36Speaker 2: this movie, and Boo Rog was a like spoof off
- 31:41Speaker 2: of Mike Tyson.
- 31:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:42Speaker 2: By the way, the hairline that they gave the actor
- 31:45Speaker 2: for bow Rog fucking atrocious. I wrote down, Yeah, I
- 31:49Speaker 2: wrote down a note that says great googlely Moogly the
- 31:51Speaker 2: hair man. The hairline they gave that man, it's insane.
- 31:55Speaker 2: But I Honta and Zangif later on in the movie
- 31:58Speaker 2: have a fight where it's just too big men just
- 32:01Speaker 2: hug at each other, if I'm being honest, But.
- 32:05Speaker 1: We also get the moment where they're having I think
- 32:07Speaker 1: there's a moment too in my notes where I refer
- 32:09Speaker 1: to there is a character who makes it to the
- 32:11Speaker 1: very end, a Japanese gentleman who like he's like when
- 32:15Speaker 1: they do the end of the movie final like Street
- 32:17Speaker 1: Fighter pose, he's included.
- 32:19Speaker 2: Yeah, he's covered throughout those scenes as well as a
- 32:21Speaker 2: military guy.
- 32:22Speaker 1: I think during like when Guile's doing his like speech
- 32:25Speaker 1: explaining their attack, he's like the guy who like asks questions.
- 32:27Speaker 1: He's like the biggest, Like he's like the other guy
- 32:29Speaker 1: who's always talking besides him and Cammi. And even then
- 32:32Speaker 1: Hammy's just sort of there as like a set piece.
- 32:34Speaker 1: She never really says much in the movie. She's really
- 32:36Speaker 1: just like I'm here and I'm your best soldier. I guess.
- 32:41Speaker 1: But this guy is not based off a character from
- 32:43Speaker 1: Street Fighter. He is like just he's completely made up
- 32:46Speaker 1: for this movie. And I don't know what it is
- 32:49Speaker 1: about him, but the way his dialogue is done, it
- 32:52Speaker 1: sounds like he was dubbed over by an English actor.
- 32:55Speaker 2: I absolutely think that he was dumped over.
- 32:56Speaker 1: It feels like a Godzilla movie, which I was literally
- 33:00Speaker 1: writing in my notes as we cut to the scene
- 33:02Speaker 1: of Zangif and Ihonda fighting where they're crushing the fake
- 33:07Speaker 1: city the Bison is built, and it looks like a
- 33:09Speaker 1: Godzilla movie.
- 33:10Speaker 2: They add in the sound effect. It's a Japanese guy
- 33:14Speaker 2: who hasn't spoken Japanese in this entire fucking movie suddenly
- 33:17Speaker 2: starts speaking Japanese just to add in the layers. I
- 33:21Speaker 2: think they even put in the goddamn music.
- 33:24Speaker 1: I think it was a Godzilla roar at some point too. Zangi,
- 33:27Speaker 1: which is it's just like it's it's awesome. It's pretty
- 33:30Speaker 1: fucking funny. That's why it's my favorite scene in the movie.
- 33:33Speaker 1: If that stupid fight, it's not a good fight. It's
- 33:35Speaker 1: just two men hugging. I was about to say the
- 33:38Speaker 1: best fight.
- 33:40Speaker 2: But yeah, speaking of the rousing speech that guy puts out,
- 33:45Speaker 2: I had notes on that one, Oh Claire, where John
- 33:48Speaker 2: Claudevandamn has to speak the most he's spoken, uh in
- 33:51Speaker 2: this entire movie. It's abhorrent. I really just I really
- 33:53Speaker 2: didn't enjoy myself at all. It's not a good speech.
- 33:56Speaker 2: It's not rousing. But then, and I was at work
- 33:59Speaker 2: when I was watching the movie, so I'm like, it
- 34:01Speaker 2: just person like work while like cutting in between, but
- 34:04Speaker 2: as is like as he puts on this rousing speech
- 34:07Speaker 2: and it's bad, but the music swelling and so and
- 34:09Speaker 2: so forth. You have cuts of like random military men
- 34:12Speaker 2: and it's just this one like small guy and he's
- 34:15Speaker 2: like this small, chubby guy and he's like smiling and
- 34:19Speaker 2: he's like this is great, this is awesome. And I
- 34:21Speaker 2: was like, who the fuck is who are these people?
- 34:24Speaker 2: So I was like freaking out. And as I was
- 34:26Speaker 2: looking through the cast list, I found out who he
- 34:29Speaker 2: was and he's the founder of Capcom.
- 34:35Speaker 1: I was like, is this little guy? Why? Why's he
- 34:39Speaker 1: so happy to be here?
- 34:40Speaker 2: He's the founder of Capcom, was the chair and CEO
- 34:43Speaker 2: for a while. When you said when you said earlier
- 34:45Speaker 2: in the episode and you were like, hey, I think
- 34:47Speaker 2: Capcom really enjoyed this movie. I think I fucking know why.
- 34:52Speaker 2: I think I understand now that is that is so magical,
- 34:56Speaker 2: real tears in his eyes. I can see the tearing
- 34:59Speaker 2: up as Yeah, I heard all day. Yeah, And I'm
- 35:01Speaker 2: gonna catch myself. This is the most I've cussed in
- 35:03Speaker 2: a press play episode because I'm really excited.
- 35:06Speaker 1: Good, I approve of this. I love it. Yeah, oh
- 35:09Speaker 1: my god. Yeah, the entire like I think everything around
- 35:12Speaker 1: Gyle was the most boring crap in this movie, and like, dude,
- 35:15Speaker 1: they tried so hard. They give him a fucking stealth ship.
- 35:19Speaker 1: Most boring scene in the movie.
- 35:22Speaker 2: By the way, stealth works really well when you're just
- 35:25Speaker 2: blowing shit up. I don't understand. This is the first
- 35:28Speaker 2: movie where I went, oh, there's boring bits. So they've
- 35:31Speaker 2: all been bad for their own little reasons. Convoluted doesn't
- 35:34Speaker 2: make sense, et cetera, et cetera. This is the first
- 35:37Speaker 2: time I've been bored two times, which was the there's
- 35:41Speaker 2: this really racist market scene.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Yeah it was. Yeah, the entire scene just felt like,
- 35:47Speaker 1: does anyone know what a market in another country feels like?
- 35:50Speaker 1: Or you just making it look like the most racist
- 35:53Speaker 1: thing you could build.
- 35:54Speaker 2: Yeah, some real scorpion kingship, Yeah, scorpion king Yeah. But uh,
- 36:00Speaker 2: it's it's just again, it's not the unnecessariness of We
- 36:06Speaker 2: were introduced earlier to this criminal element in the form
- 36:09Speaker 2: of Sigatt, who again quite video game accurate. I both
- 36:13Speaker 2: like Segatt and Vega. Yeah, Scott in the games is
- 36:17Speaker 2: a mhit Thai specialist. He's not as old as he
- 36:20Speaker 2: is in these games, but he's got the eye patch.
- 36:22Speaker 2: He's speaking tie I believe in the movie. So that's
- 36:25Speaker 2: pretty cool. And then Vega just a sexy spaniard kumsk
- 36:30Speaker 2: and sharp clause. That's all I need from him.
- 36:33Speaker 1: I need to get into a little bit of the
- 36:34Speaker 1: Vega thing, because one, it's our first tease of a
- 36:37Speaker 1: fight that doesn't happen. Oh god.
- 36:39Speaker 5: Uh.
- 36:40Speaker 1: Secondly is when they do bust like guy all like
- 36:44Speaker 1: burst through the wall and a tank and arrests everybody.
- 36:46Speaker 1: We see the audience is like an age range of
- 36:49Speaker 1: like little children to like grandmothers. At the Eagles Street
- 36:53Speaker 1: Fighting tournament for some reason, you didn't make a note.
- 36:57Speaker 1: And then finally not that. And finally when they get
- 36:59Speaker 1: to prison and they're having their prison brawl, Vega has
- 37:02Speaker 1: built himself another pair of claws in prison. Yeah, like books.
- 37:07Speaker 1: At the end, Yeah, he's like, this is my thing, dude,
- 37:09Speaker 1: I can't do anything. I'm like surprised he didn't building
- 37:12Speaker 1: a wooden mask to while he was at it.
- 37:14Speaker 2: Vega's awesome, That's all I have to say.
- 37:17Speaker 1: I do love it. I think he was very well
- 37:18Speaker 1: out of this movie. But yet like a close up
- 37:20Speaker 1: of one of their tattoos and a custom transitions from
- 37:23Speaker 1: one person by showing the tattoo, and it's like the
- 37:26Speaker 1: tattoo looks like a third grader druid. It's like super
- 37:28Speaker 1: uneven line work.
- 37:30Speaker 2: It's like, yeah, again, video game accurate.
- 37:34Speaker 1: There you go. It looks like it's PS one graphics.
- 37:36Speaker 2: Yeah, but yeah, for some reason, we have to introduce
- 37:40Speaker 2: these people and for some reason the bad guys have
- 37:42Speaker 2: to team up. That seems boring as shit. I don't
- 37:45Speaker 2: even want to talk about it. And then I found
- 37:47Speaker 2: personally the entire third act to be inanely boring, like
- 37:52Speaker 2: the the third Matrix, just action scene for the entire
- 37:56Speaker 2: third act and nothing really happens. This is the first
- 37:59Speaker 2: time I started skipping through a movie. I had eight
- 38:02Speaker 2: hours to watch this movie at work. I did plenty
- 38:05Speaker 2: of work. I could not. I just couldn't stand to
- 38:08Speaker 2: let this play in the background. I had to skip
- 38:10Speaker 2: through it. Which is really interesting because the Guile versus
- 38:14Speaker 2: m Bison fight, I think, does feature some interesting martial
- 38:17Speaker 2: arts slash yeah, tricking.
- 38:19Speaker 1: It's again, while Gile is the most boring part of
- 38:21Speaker 1: the movie. It's a decent fight. It's well done. It's
- 38:25Speaker 1: like for its time, decent choreo.
- 38:27Speaker 2: Yeah, but I think because the fight, and that's why
- 38:29Speaker 2: you get John Claudevan dam by the way, I understand that. Yeah,
- 38:33Speaker 2: he probably did a lot of it himself. He is
- 38:34Speaker 2: a martial artist by trade.
- 38:36Speaker 1: I get it.
- 38:37Speaker 2: But maybe because it has no point other than action.
- 38:42Speaker 2: For action's sakes. You got military men fucking storming the building,
- 38:45Speaker 2: there's electrocutions happening, there's big men fighting as Godzilla. None
- 38:49Speaker 2: of it fucking matters, And I just got bored out
- 38:52Speaker 2: of my mind.
- 38:53Speaker 1: No, I will say Chun Lee's initial combat against Bison
- 38:57Speaker 1: before she is distracted and he like gets away and
- 38:59Speaker 1: try to poison that like legitimately. Again great acting, great performance,
- 39:06Speaker 1: and like that's the fight I wanted to see, was
- 39:09Speaker 1: Chun Lee versus Bison over Guyle versus Bison.
- 39:12Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, there you mentioned this earlier in the movie.
- 39:15Speaker 2: They edge you a lot. Yeah for a street fighter
- 39:18Speaker 2: being a one on one fight situation. They have Riyu
- 39:22Speaker 2: and Ken do a little kung fu on some henchman
- 39:24Speaker 2: here there. They keep they kept teasing these one on
- 39:28Speaker 2: one fights, but then having no finality to any of them,
- 39:31Speaker 2: so then they just crammed it all into third act.
- 39:33Speaker 2: That was another thing I think is just shoving at
- 39:36Speaker 2: all towards the third act. All the company accurate costumes,
- 39:39Speaker 2: all the fights, all the things that you would think
- 39:40Speaker 2: you would want and love are all shoved at the end.
- 39:44Speaker 2: For I would say no less than at least twenty minutes.
- 39:47Speaker 2: And it's it's a slog, it's.
- 39:49Speaker 1: Yere and like there's definitely room, like if we were
- 39:52Speaker 1: to remake this movie, like there's definitely room to have,
- 39:54Speaker 1: like the Sagat versus Guile fight earlier or Ken Versure
- 39:58Speaker 1: like one of those. I'm gonna say, we didn't get
- 40:01Speaker 1: the canvass Re one of them secretly evil fight, Like
- 40:03Speaker 1: God bless we cut that one out. That's another game.
- 40:08Speaker 1: It's another trope from this game franchise and these movie
- 40:10Speaker 1: type things. We do need to cut back for a
- 40:13Speaker 1: second though, to the Magical Mystery Stealth Bomber Boat. You
- 40:18Speaker 1: really want to talk about that because there are two
- 40:20Speaker 1: things in it that drive me so bad, and we're
- 40:24Speaker 1: going to stealth mode and they all put their visors down,
- 40:27Speaker 1: explain why that's necessary. Riot Yeah, Like like why does
- 40:33Speaker 1: stealth bade need visors down in inside of a boat?
- 40:36Speaker 1: And then there is a moment where Guyle starts watching
- 40:40Speaker 1: like footage of him on a date, like on a
- 40:43Speaker 1: double date with with Carlos Blanca while they're in the
- 40:46Speaker 1: boat fighting things like literally, I know we're in the
- 40:49Speaker 1: middle of war and I have a magical super boat
- 40:52Speaker 1: that can blow things up. But let me just play
- 40:54Speaker 1: this video that someone filmed of me and my best
- 40:58Speaker 1: buddy on a double date in what looks like Greece
- 41:01Speaker 1: for a few seconds for nothing at all, except like
- 41:04Speaker 1: it's remind the audience that I care about him and
- 41:07Speaker 1: I want to rescue him.
- 41:08Speaker 2: Do you remember where they vacationed?
- 41:12Speaker 5: It was?
- 41:12Speaker 1: It was very weirdly like it looked like a Greek
- 41:14Speaker 1: country side. It was very like I can picture Greece.
- 41:16Speaker 1: It was why that stood out to me?
- 41:18Speaker 2: Yeah, No, I forgot, and most likely the audience has
- 41:21Speaker 2: forgotten this entire subplot that has happened. Yeah, which is
- 41:25Speaker 2: that Carlos Blanco will become that titular character that you
- 41:29Speaker 2: know from Street Fighter. What's this deal? I don't even know.
- 41:31Speaker 2: It's just that green guy, you know, the green guy,
- 41:33Speaker 2: the guy that does spinny thing in street.
- 41:34Speaker 1: He's electrical for some reason. That's a thing in the Games.
- 41:37Speaker 1: He's electrical. I didn't know, absolutely right, mm hmm.
- 41:41Speaker 2: He has to have a connection, he has to have
- 41:43Speaker 2: a space here for the relationships him and Dahalism, which
- 41:48Speaker 2: they changed a ton. He's no longer like this Indian
- 41:51Speaker 2: monk guru situation, which is fine, but he does have
- 41:56Speaker 2: to be bald by the end of it. And then
- 41:58Speaker 2: they have to explain that or no, no, no, what
- 42:01Speaker 2: blank these people.
- 42:05Speaker 1: Crazy names, we don't know.
- 42:06Speaker 2: Yeah, Blanca and Dalism now have to be two buds
- 42:10Speaker 2: again on their own separate adventure, and that Blanc has
- 42:14Speaker 2: found these humanity we must like.
- 42:16Speaker 1: It's so much dude, it's so okay. But can we
- 42:20Speaker 1: just also have a moment of like one how the
- 42:22Speaker 1: fun guyle recognizes Buddy as this green and orange who
- 42:26Speaker 1: is also like the most ridiculous looking like practical effects
- 42:30Speaker 1: I've seen in the movie in a long time.
- 42:32Speaker 2: I did, I did laugh that being said, you cannot
- 42:34Speaker 2: say that because we just watched the Bobo from Double Dragon.
- 42:37Speaker 1: How dare you valid? Vallid? You're right, that was really.
- 42:41Speaker 2: Terrible for me to witness and watch I really hated that.
- 42:44Speaker 1: Okay, and then can we discuss what what is the
- 42:46Speaker 1: reaction Guyle has to see his best friend turn into
- 42:48Speaker 1: this weird mutant is to cock his gun and go,
- 42:51Speaker 1: I'm gonna put you out of your missing That's right,
- 42:54Speaker 1: You're totally right, zero asitation.
- 43:00Speaker 2: Like a horse.
- 43:03Speaker 1: You broke your leg. Time time to go behind, the
- 43:05Speaker 1: time to go to the big farm in the sky.
- 43:07Speaker 2: Buddy, you remember that double day we went on in Greece.
- 43:09Speaker 2: So well, no one's gonna We're not doing that ship anymore.
- 43:12Speaker 2: I gotta put you out of your misery.
- 43:13Speaker 1: That sucks. This sucks. This is bad. So I will
- 43:16Speaker 1: say I in research and some facts about this movie,
- 43:19Speaker 1: there was going to be more plot for these two,
- 43:23Speaker 1: for for dal semen Blanca, and the idea essentially is
- 43:26Speaker 1: when they do eventually get away, they were gonna live
- 43:28Speaker 1: in the woods together and like the Jungles, and that's
- 43:31Speaker 1: where he was going to develop, Like because the chemical spill,
- 43:33Speaker 1: we get for like a split second his stretching powers
- 43:35Speaker 1: and become like, oh, like that was supposed to be
- 43:39Speaker 1: if there was a sequel type thing, Oh my god,
- 43:42Speaker 1: that's a sequel.
- 43:44Speaker 2: We didn't put enough. We didn't put enough. We got
- 43:46Speaker 2: to figure out where where does Ehonda and Bawrugg's newspaper
- 43:49Speaker 2: career whatever news? And one was an established cameraman and
- 43:53Speaker 2: the other one just hung on the van. I guess
- 43:56Speaker 2: what do after that? Oh?
- 43:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I guess it is they can go
- 43:59Speaker 1: back to effectively boxing and Suma wrestling, like because this
- 44:03Speaker 1: will magically clear up whatever past they had that stop
- 44:06Speaker 1: them from doing that. But we've also got I think
- 44:09Speaker 1: another one of the dumbest jokes in the movie, which
- 44:11Speaker 1: is the like Bison like look like looks scared for
- 44:14Speaker 1: a second because he has pulled out the tiniest knife
- 44:17Speaker 1: to ever be a knife. And it's the re actuality
- 44:20Speaker 1: is all of his teammates and all of his friends
- 44:22Speaker 1: air quote friends. He doesn't he connects with nobody in
- 44:25Speaker 1: this movie. They're all just there because like you're fighting
- 44:28Speaker 1: and Bison, we want him dead. I guess you're our
- 44:30Speaker 1: champion now, gile Uh. They all show up to like
- 44:34Speaker 1: basically say like you got this, We're gonna go deal
- 44:36Speaker 1: with everything else.
- 44:38Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's awesome because he's used a gun, he's
- 44:42Speaker 2: used a knife. Just use your kicks or something whatever.
- 44:45Speaker 2: Guyle is known for just do that.
- 44:48Speaker 1: Yeah, and we do. We do get. We do get
- 44:51Speaker 1: a bunch of like little vignettes of like decent martial
- 44:54Speaker 1: arts scenes, including Reu doing what almost looks like a Hodoken,
- 44:59Speaker 1: but they didn't want to go to that level of
- 45:01Speaker 1: like mysticism or like special abilities.
- 45:04Speaker 2: So it is just probably when I started skipping the movie.
- 45:06Speaker 1: Oh so he like does the gesture, there's like a
- 45:10Speaker 1: very slight like as if the brightness of the screen
- 45:12Speaker 1: goes up for like a tenth of a second, and
- 45:15Speaker 1: the random grunt gets like knocked back severely, and it's
- 45:18Speaker 1: like did he just adope at him? You don't see it?
- 45:22Speaker 1: It's like, you know what. For as much as like
- 45:25Speaker 1: there's a mystical element to some of these characters, and
- 45:28Speaker 1: they kind of the science he route for a lot
- 45:30Speaker 1: of it. Yeah, I'll give them that of like referencing it,
- 45:34Speaker 1: but not being like, oh, he can just suddenly shoot
- 45:36Speaker 1: fireballs because we decided that was a thing that happened
- 45:38Speaker 1: in this universe. They've like weirdly grounded themselves in realism,
- 45:42Speaker 1: which is incredibly weird to say. When the next thing
- 45:44Speaker 1: I want to talk about is m Bison's electrical like
- 45:49Speaker 1: restarting his heart suit thing.
- 45:53Speaker 2: Well, I was gonna say, do you think they did
- 45:55Speaker 2: it out of the for the Duken part? Do you
- 45:57Speaker 2: think they did it out of realism or because they
- 45:59Speaker 2: knew it looked like fucking shit? Because these movies they're
- 46:03Speaker 2: not known for their special effects. They're not known for
- 46:05Speaker 2: the yeah you know, for for for all that good stuff.
- 46:09Speaker 2: It's the nineties, we get it, but truly truly uh
- 46:13Speaker 2: pixelated like Microsoft fucking word animations for for m Bison's electricity,
- 46:18Speaker 2: it's it's awesome.
- 46:20Speaker 5: Uh.
- 46:21Speaker 2: Star Wars did better effects twenty five years earlier.
- 46:25Speaker 1: Oh yeah, like the lightning effects on Bison when he's
- 46:27Speaker 1: being like resuscitated by his like jacket apparently has like
- 46:31Speaker 1: a built like you see it like puffing up and
- 46:32Speaker 1: like put it doing chest compressions, like it actually has
- 46:35Speaker 1: like a pumpin of some sort. Yeah, and like revives
- 46:38Speaker 1: him and he's now he's flying around, which again like
- 46:40Speaker 1: makes sense to the character in the games. He's always
- 46:42Speaker 1: kind of like that covering thing. But they make it
- 46:44Speaker 1: like it's a weird science ability. It's not like magic
- 46:46Speaker 1: like I think the game might do. I don't even
- 46:48Speaker 1: know anymore. I forget how I don't know who's science
- 46:51Speaker 1: and who's magic anymore. Yeah, and like, but we do
- 46:54Speaker 1: get like that classically, you think the villain comes back
- 46:57Speaker 1: kind of a bonus fight scene. And then, as you
- 47:00Speaker 1: pointed out in the notes, you didn't get this and
- 47:02Speaker 1: need to die. I looked it up later on YouTube.
- 47:05Speaker 1: There is a post credit scene.
- 47:07Speaker 2: Oh, it's up on YouTube.
- 47:10Speaker 1: I had to go find the clip on YouTube because
- 47:12Speaker 1: the version I had didn't have it. But essentially it
- 47:14Speaker 1: is just like it's almost the same thing again where
- 47:16Speaker 1: it's like the computer talking like good the resuscitation again
- 47:19Speaker 1: and like you see his like hand come out of
- 47:22Speaker 1: the rubble, and then it cuts to a computer screen
- 47:25Speaker 1: where it like navigates through like a Windows ninety eight
- 47:28Speaker 1: menu to like options next move world domination. Like that's
- 47:34Speaker 1: just that's just an option in his file menu file
- 47:38Speaker 1: save as world domination, print world domination. Yes.
- 47:44Speaker 2: Also, that's like supposed to be a reveewed. That's his
- 47:46Speaker 2: old fucking stick throughout the movie.
- 47:48Speaker 1: That's what he's doing. It's like he's already doing that
- 47:51Speaker 1: the Nazi all the time. He's already he's already been
- 47:54Speaker 1: recessitated once or they didn't go back to again the
- 47:56Speaker 1: building blows up at the ends. I guess they don't
- 47:58Speaker 1: like think to go back. Yeah, Like you, like, one
- 48:02Speaker 1: of the worst dictators in all of human history, who
- 48:04Speaker 1: we've all been gunning to kill, is dead and this
- 48:06Speaker 1: place has blown to smith areens? Do you want to
- 48:09Speaker 1: go back and make sure he didn't get away or
- 48:11Speaker 1: some shit.
- 48:14Speaker 2: Not. It's a it's a weird thing to say, but
- 48:17Speaker 2: I kind of wish there was a sequel. I wish
- 48:19Speaker 2: they had, like because they had already dived so deep
- 48:21Speaker 2: into the street fighter lore and it's probably I should
- 48:25Speaker 2: probably be like a sane person and probably say, like,
- 48:27Speaker 2: not this medium. But we haven't had a lot of
- 48:30Speaker 2: street fighter mediums since, like we had the Chun Lee movie,
- 48:34Speaker 2: which we might may or may not cover.
- 48:36Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I was just pulling it up, thinking like,
- 48:38Speaker 1: it's pretty far down the line. It might yeah to
- 48:40Speaker 1: revisit it.
- 48:41Speaker 2: And yeah, for sure, I think there's a couple of
- 48:43Speaker 2: animated OVAs and stuff like that, like not actually like
- 48:46Speaker 2: majorly produced or anything, but like a Kuma like for
- 48:50Speaker 2: those who are into this, that's like the big bad
- 48:54Speaker 2: guy for Ken and Reeu specifically, and he's just basically
- 48:57Speaker 2: like an evil version of re and he's probably the
- 49:01Speaker 2: next big bad other than m Bison. Like, I kind
- 49:04Speaker 2: of do want to watch this continue for the train
- 49:07Speaker 2: wreck that it is. Yeah, because at least it establishes lore.
- 49:10Speaker 2: At least it was like faithful to the world, which
- 49:14Speaker 2: is cool. It's it's kind of like an interesting It's
- 49:17Speaker 2: not good. It's not Game of Thrones, let's be honest, people,
- 49:20Speaker 2: but it's kind of fun.
- 49:21Speaker 3: You know.
- 49:22Speaker 1: The end they felt the same as Game of Thrones.
- 49:23Speaker 1: They kind of really shot the bed at the end.
- 49:27Speaker 1: But no, I'm with you. I thought this was again
- 49:29Speaker 1: a like I like, it didn't feel like a chore
- 49:33Speaker 1: having to watch this the way some movies I've watched
- 49:35Speaker 1: in the past for like other projects have felt like
- 49:37Speaker 1: like I had fun. I was reminded and again just
- 49:40Speaker 1: to have a personal moment. This is one of those
- 49:42Speaker 1: movies my father and I watched growing up because he
- 49:44Speaker 1: loved like old shitty action movies. So like Jean Claude
- 49:48Speaker 1: Ben Dan was like, I'll watch it. So we actually
- 49:49Speaker 1: chatted about it a bit and he's like, yeah, I
- 49:51Speaker 1: remember that movie Er John Claude Dana being really good.
- 49:54Speaker 1: It's like like he he wasn't that good in it.
- 49:58Speaker 1: Whatever you like shat the action movies, So I'll give
- 50:01Speaker 1: it to you. But I will say, for the sake
- 50:04Speaker 1: of a Paltte cleanser for our listeners, if you did
- 50:06Speaker 1: watch along with us or just have to bear with
- 50:08Speaker 1: us explaining this movie to you, and you Jason, as
- 50:10Speaker 1: a gift, I will find it for you and I'll
- 50:13Speaker 1: send it to you. We can put in the show notes.
- 50:15Speaker 1: There is a YouTube short that was made as a
- 50:18Speaker 1: part of a like mobile game that is street Fighter
- 50:22Speaker 1: Cross Power Rangers Whoa and like it's got like, first
- 50:27Speaker 1: of all, it legitimately has the original Green Ranger I'm
- 50:31Speaker 1: forgetting his name right now, Tommy Frank Mac play like
- 50:36Speaker 1: reprising the role of the White Ranger and then they
- 50:39Speaker 1: like team up with Chunley and reu for like a
- 50:42Speaker 1: fight against Rita.
- 50:43Speaker 2: That's pretty cool and it's actually really good. That's pretty cool.
- 50:47Speaker 1: It's like a five minute ad for a mobile game
- 50:49Speaker 1: that I didn't know existed. So what would you change
- 50:58Speaker 1: about this movie? Obviously, like we both don't think this
- 51:01Speaker 1: is a masterpiece so far. That is part of the course.
- 51:05Speaker 1: What what do you what would you change?
- 51:06Speaker 2: You know, I think this movie is really really faithful
- 51:10Speaker 2: to its adaptation, something that we have not so much
- 51:14Speaker 2: as a scene from the previous movies. And I think
- 51:17Speaker 2: I don't think necessarily to the detriment. I think the
- 51:19Speaker 2: campiness is good. I think the humor is good. I
- 51:21Speaker 2: think making fun of it is good. I just think
- 51:23Speaker 2: that it wants to play really serious, and then it
- 51:26Speaker 2: also like doesn't give itself enough credit. But I think overall,
- 51:30Speaker 2: like if you had to change into something great, it
- 51:32Speaker 2: is something like watchable for other people and not weirdos
- 51:35Speaker 2: like us. I think you have to like it. It's
- 51:37Speaker 2: come back to the essence of a thing. You don't
- 51:39Speaker 2: need to explain Chun Lee being in the dress that
- 51:42Speaker 2: she is and having her van braces or gauntlets or
- 51:45Speaker 2: bracelets or whatever the fuck they are, right, I think
- 51:47Speaker 2: you just need to be like, all right, who's his character,
- 51:49Speaker 2: what's her motivation? And then, honestly, for this movie as
- 51:52Speaker 2: a single outing like that's okay, chop out some characters
- 51:55Speaker 2: I don't need. I don't need Tea Hawk, Like I
- 51:58Speaker 2: didn't even know that was Tea Hawk.
- 51:59Speaker 1: Oh one hundred percent. It was literally He has a
- 52:01Speaker 1: one throwaway line where he mentions the bandana being like
- 52:06Speaker 1: Native American. Yes, And like I was like, wait, is
- 52:09Speaker 1: that a character I actually know about? And like I said,
- 52:11Speaker 1: he's not in a street Fighter too, he's only in Turbo.
- 52:15Speaker 2: Oh okay, he's in other games after but way after
- 52:19Speaker 2: this movie.
- 52:19Speaker 1: Way, I'm not even I'm not even sure, Like what
- 52:22Speaker 1: was he like reference in the game. It is not
- 52:23Speaker 1: a playable character, I don't know. But like if you
- 52:25Speaker 1: look up street Fighter two characters, he's not listed. And
- 52:28Speaker 1: then if you look like look up Teahawk, it's like, oh,
- 52:30Speaker 1: street Fighter two Turbo introduced him.
- 52:31Speaker 2: I'm like, wow, okay, yeah, so yeah, I don't need
- 52:34Speaker 2: I don't think you need to be so slavishly devoted
- 52:37Speaker 2: to fan base. I just do like cut things, you know,
- 52:41Speaker 2: make make it good for the story. I kind of
- 52:42Speaker 2: did find like a little bit of charm in saying like, Okay,
- 52:46Speaker 2: this is how this person interacts with this person. That's fine,
- 52:50Speaker 2: you know, like it's okay to be a little more complicated,
- 52:52Speaker 2: not as cut and dry, but just yeah, just just cuts,
- 52:55Speaker 2: cut some fat I think.
- 52:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I think genuinely, what it comes down to is
- 53:00Speaker 1: like if I were to reshoot this movie with the
- 53:02Speaker 1: same cast, the same character choices the ones, Like I
- 53:06Speaker 1: would like that first scene where there's almost a fight
- 53:08Speaker 1: between Vega and Riu, Like, let them have that fight.
- 53:12Speaker 1: It interrupted early, but like we get like a fight,
- 53:15Speaker 1: you know, somewhere in the middle, have like a sigatte
- 53:18Speaker 1: face off with somebody, just so that they like, like
- 53:20Speaker 1: give every character, even if it's just a brief moment,
- 53:23Speaker 1: let them have their fight. Yeah. Like I feel like
- 53:27Speaker 1: again like Tea Hawk, dhlcium DJ, like they're there because
- 53:31Speaker 1: you had these names, and you're like, well, if we're
- 53:33Speaker 1: gonna have a random nobody, it may as well be
- 53:35Speaker 1: a character. But like, don't do that and instead let
- 53:38Speaker 1: the ones you have. Like how many lines does fucking
- 53:41Speaker 1: Kylie Minogue as Cammy have in this movie? I think
- 53:44Speaker 1: it's too.
- 53:46Speaker 2: I can I ask two questions about that. Yeah, but
- 53:49Speaker 2: I'll say this as part of the improvement too. Is
- 53:51Speaker 2: Kylie Minogue British? Is that like a well known fact?
- 53:53Speaker 2: I don't know who Kyle.
- 53:54Speaker 1: I believe she's a well known British. I think she's
- 53:57Speaker 1: like a singer, not even an actor.
- 53:59Speaker 2: Okay, could not tell terrible accent. Hated her almost every
- 54:05Speaker 2: time she was like on screen because she doesn't look
- 54:07Speaker 2: like Kamy. She doesn't, she's not as cool as Cammy,
- 54:10Speaker 2: and her mind deliveries were bad. So get rid of
- 54:13Speaker 2: Kylie minogue is my first improvement. But then to your point,
- 54:18Speaker 2: and to kind of my point too, something that was
- 54:20Speaker 2: missing was like something I've been trying to pay attention
- 54:23Speaker 2: to in movie making and so and so forth, is
- 54:26Speaker 2: a lot of good directors or storytellers will try to
- 54:29Speaker 2: if you're gonna have these comic book films and action
- 54:32Speaker 2: scenes and so and so forth, make the action scene
- 54:35Speaker 2: mean something, make it have like some some gravity of
- 54:39Speaker 2: the storytelling, so like have fights, but also set up
- 54:43Speaker 2: character points where it's like, okay, so if chun Ley
- 54:45Speaker 2: has like a chip on her shoulder from m Bison,
- 54:48Speaker 2: maybe have them fucking fight and maybe have that fight
- 54:50Speaker 2: mean something. Kyle and Bison kind of have like a
- 54:54Speaker 2: dick measuring contest, but there's not like a ton there
- 54:58Speaker 2: to say that this has to happen between those two,
- 55:02Speaker 2: Like if that makes any sense mm hm. So give
- 55:04Speaker 2: fights this like stakes exactly, and give them character moments
- 55:08Speaker 2: if you have to sacrifice like dialogue and other character
- 55:11Speaker 2: moments for the fights.
- 55:12Speaker 1: Like genuinely, I genuinely feel like you could have like
- 55:16Speaker 1: broken this down into the three act structure and in
- 55:18Speaker 1: each act have like one or two fight scenes, like
- 55:22Speaker 1: even like yeah, introducing kenon Ryu, it could have been
- 55:26Speaker 1: the two of them having a sparring match and like,
- 55:29Speaker 1: you know, Sigott being like, you know, you invited me
- 55:31Speaker 1: out here, you said you had some weapons, Like what
- 55:33Speaker 1: is this and like, oh, it's just like this is
- 55:35Speaker 1: like our cover? Is this dojo or like you know, which, Okay, cool.
- 55:38Speaker 1: We've seen the fighters, We've seen their skill, We've you know,
- 55:41Speaker 1: established people know they're fighters. You know, Like there's so
- 55:45Speaker 1: many little things you could have done to like really
- 55:48Speaker 1: amp up the street fighter versus a third act kram
- 55:51Speaker 1: in as many little idy bitty fights as you could. Yeah,
- 55:54Speaker 1: and yeah, get rid of a few of those extra
- 55:56Speaker 1: characters that we didn't need like as much as I
- 55:59Speaker 1: and and the fact that he still had characters who
- 56:02Speaker 1: had like prominent speaking roles and show up at the
- 56:05Speaker 1: final like you know, moment I think you actually point
- 56:09Speaker 1: out the character in question is uh captain, Like that
- 56:13Speaker 1: could have been Cammy. You could have replaced Swata with
- 56:15Speaker 1: Cammy and would have been made them like a ten
- 56:18Speaker 1: times better character.
- 56:19Speaker 2: Yeah, ten times that a character show up at the end,
- 56:25Speaker 2: you're greatly improved.
- 56:26Speaker 1: But like he's also the one who's like having conversations
- 56:29Speaker 1: with Guile over all of their planning and meetings, like
- 56:32Speaker 1: he's doing stuff. Yeah yeah, yeah. Cammy felt like Van A.
- 56:37Speaker 1: White put a step down and we had and we
- 56:41Speaker 1: had Vana White in the last movie before we end
- 56:45Speaker 1: up and go to our little game segment. I do
- 56:46Speaker 1: want to spin off a few fun facts for you
- 56:48Speaker 1: to see, uh, to give you some behind the scenes
- 56:50Speaker 1: of this movie that I thought were worth sharing. So
- 56:52Speaker 1: first of all, Sean con van Dam himself revealed that
- 56:57Speaker 1: during the filming of this he was doing tens of
- 57:00Speaker 1: thousands of dollars worth of cocaine a week and having
- 57:03Speaker 1: an affair with Kylie Minogue. During the filming of this movie,
- 57:05Speaker 1: Jesus Christ. Uh, they went as far as hiring a
- 57:09Speaker 1: wrangler to basically keep Van Dam in check, but the
- 57:12Speaker 1: person they got to wrangle him ended up giving him
- 57:15Speaker 1: more drugs. I was often found like calling out sick
- 57:20Speaker 1: or leaving set or showing up late, but with no excuses,
- 57:24Speaker 1: forcing them to like rip scenes out of the movie
- 57:26Speaker 1: and give scenes to other characters instead, so that they
- 57:29Speaker 1: were actually an excuse to be one.
- 57:32Speaker 2: So he was gonna be like more our protagonists.
- 57:35Speaker 1: But wow, yeah, it almost feels like they weirdly like
- 57:38Speaker 1: he got cut out of the movie because of his
- 57:40Speaker 1: own actions outside of the filming, which gave like ming
- 57:44Speaker 1: Nowen a chance to like flourish his chunney and get
- 57:46Speaker 1: more scenes.
- 57:47Speaker 2: Oh cancel culture, am I right, yeah.
- 57:52Speaker 1: I cancel all these cocaine frenchmen. As we brought up
- 57:56Speaker 1: earlier with ral Julia, who famously portrayed Gomez Adams, he
- 58:01Speaker 1: took this role because he wanted a movie that his
- 58:03Speaker 1: kids could watch and enjoy, because they were fans of
- 58:05Speaker 1: the game and he wanted to participated in the film
- 58:08Speaker 1: that would like bring them joy, which I think is
- 58:10Speaker 1: so adorable and I like it makes me love him
- 58:12Speaker 1: even more.
- 58:13Speaker 2: It is super adorable. Also, your kids can watch Adam
- 58:15Speaker 2: his family.
- 58:16Speaker 1: It's okay. I mean yeah, I think, I think, I
- 58:18Speaker 1: think it's I think. Then it was the considered RACI
- 58:20Speaker 1: and now it's like no, it's super plain. Yeah. Also
- 58:24Speaker 1: to tie into next week's movie, Jean Claude van Dam
- 58:27Speaker 1: turned down the role of Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat
- 58:30Speaker 1: to do this.
- 58:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I haven't known this fact, again being a mortal comic,
- 58:34Speaker 2: and I've known this fact about John Claude Van Dam
- 58:36Speaker 2: for a long long time, that Johnny Cage is based
- 58:38Speaker 2: off of him. They wanted him for the movie all
- 58:41Speaker 2: that good stuff. I'll be honest, this is my first
- 58:43Speaker 2: John Claude Vandamn movie.
- 58:47Speaker 1: I don't like the guy. I don't. I don't get it.
- 58:50Speaker 1: I don't get it. No, there's like one other movie
- 58:52Speaker 1: of his I watched my father. I cannot tell you
- 58:54Speaker 1: what it is, but it's like one of the ones
- 58:55Speaker 1: where he does is like famous because his thing is
- 58:58Speaker 1: the splits, and he never does in this movie. And
- 59:01Speaker 1: that to me is like I was waiting for it, Like,
- 59:04Speaker 1: at least, if you're gonna put Van Dam in this movie,
- 59:06Speaker 1: you're gonna give me the moment and then do I think,
- 59:08Speaker 1: give it?
- 59:08Speaker 2: Yeah, Johnny Cage does. He does this split exact yeah,
- 59:12Speaker 2: which is.
- 59:13Speaker 1: The most like iconic move for that character. Let him
- 59:16Speaker 1: do it, like I Like I said, they kind of
- 59:17Speaker 1: got away with nodoken, but giving Reu like a moment
- 59:21Speaker 1: to hint at it. Yeah. Like again, chunn Ley never
- 59:24Speaker 1: does the spinning bird kick, which is a classic one
- 59:26Speaker 1: of her moves. Although how you would do that?
- 59:27Speaker 2: Yeah, that's good.
- 59:29Speaker 1: I don't want that. Like I'm glad they cut the
- 59:32Speaker 1: line on some of these. Yeah. I will share one
- 59:34Speaker 1: last fun fact that this one really like threw me
- 59:36Speaker 1: for a loop. So surprisingly you know the Wilhelm scream, right, Yeah,
- 59:41Speaker 1: and how like every movie has used its almost this movie,
- 59:43Speaker 1: to my knowledge, I didn't catch at least doesn't use it. However,
- 59:48Speaker 1: I heard it once. Yeah, I think it was during
- 59:49Speaker 1: the I think it was during the brainwashing scene. I
- 59:51Speaker 1: think I heard it. Oh, maybe I'll have to go
- 59:53Speaker 1: back and check. But we do get during that final fight,
- 59:57Speaker 1: one of Bison's troops get sent flying out of an
- 59:59Speaker 1: explosion and it plays the goofy sound, the goofy like
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: what he goes since flying away, which also makes this
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: one of the very few non animated and non Disney
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: films to use that sound effect. Oh okay, I kind
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: of want to go back and like look that up
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: and now and see what other movies have been able
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: to get away with that. But like interesting to me,
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: it's like what a bizarre like like what why this
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: movie's awesome? I think that I think also what why
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: how describes this movie as in a nutshell pretty much? Yeah, well,
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: this was a very fun experience. I love that. I
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: think it was finally broke you.
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, I mean I think this is a good
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: time to sow our verdict. Right, we want to test
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: these movies now, we want to see the history of
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: these movies. How do you feel is it a good
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: video game adaptation of Street Fighter or Street Fighter too?
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: And then is it a good movie? Well, I'm going
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: to give this on the scale of adaptation, I'm going
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: to give this a Hyper to Turbo Alpha edition.
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: I was gonna give it a street Fighter Anniversary collection,
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: Capcom Fighting Evolution.
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: Damn it. He's just better than mine We're Hunger title. Damn.
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: I was like on the spot, like, what are the
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: words that throw anymore? He just Mine's real? Okay. Well,
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: when they eventually make a Kingdom Hearts movie, we get
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: to make the same jump again in twenty years. I'll
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: leave it to you. I'm sorry, but like I like
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: some of the like the fact that they had the
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: heart to put the right details where it mattered, to
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: make these characters feel like their characters and not just
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: like Mario and Luigi or the brothers in Double Dragon,
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: where it was just like, here's the character name, now
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: let's put them in our own movie. This felt like
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: if you asked a ten year old kid to make
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: up a movie for street Fighter and kind of just
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: like American propaganda war stuff, this might be what you
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: get with every character almost getting it name and showing
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: up and like a ten year old boy, Chunnley, would
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: it have been a hot outfit and Canny would say nothing,
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: because that's how movies about action heroes.
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, no, it's it's a it's a great adavitation.
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: I think we both agree on that. As a movie itself.
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: Oh, as a movie itself, I would still give it
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: like a seven out of ten because I legitimately think
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: this would be a very fun movie to have a
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: drink and watch with friends and laugh about.
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah. It broke It broke me.
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: I had to skip it. I did not know who
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: John Claude van dam was like screen wise, I now
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: know his work. I don't like the guy understandable that's yeah,
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: you might be a good guy, John Claude, honestly like
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: a decent human being. Maybe I don't know, but I don't.
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: I just don't like you on principle. Now for that,
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: I'm gonna give you a quarter circle back, mid punch,
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: low punch. If that's an actual combo, I don't fucking know,
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: but I know that's how that works in Street Fighter.
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: I'm sure I can look at up and find if
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: it's a real move. I had to look at a
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: lot of moves for our minigame, which we'll get to
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: in a little bit. Welcome everyone to another mini games
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: segment on Press Play. We are joined this week by
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: Aaron and John is returning. Maybe you'll redeem yourself in
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: this week's game after last week's being crushed by your partner.
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: Maybe maybe not. I don't know. It's just like it's
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: like a trade fighter. You you you do your first round,
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: you don't do so well, and you get a second
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: round to recoup yourself and come back to the winner.
- 1:03:32Speaker 5: Yeah, hopefully this is my Chunneley or Vega round, so
- 1:03:34Speaker 5: I can just just spam attacks the whole time.
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: Ah yeah, insight there, that's awesome. Or spamming with fireballs.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: I guess there's there's a lot of there's a lot
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: of cheap moves you can do. Oh yeah, early early
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: fighting games was just like, oh, you find that one
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: move that's like too quick and hard to dodge, and
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: you just keep doing it and like piss off your
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: brother who like thinks he's good at the game but
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: can't get a move off because you don't stop just
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: lower kicking in the corner. Yeah.
- 1:04:00Speaker 5: Uh, a lot of broken controllers.
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: So it sounds like John, you definitely have some experience
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: with Street Fighter. I am not I not a Street
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: Fighter household unfortunately, but Aaron is also joining us from
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: the amazing BFY CW podcast also gate Leapers cast, Helly,
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: Thanks thanks for coming in, Aaron, of course. How familiar
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: are you with Street Fighter, the game, the movie.
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: Oh man, everything. I watched the movie just before coming
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: on today. I made sure to watch it this morning
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: just to remind myself of how amazing it is. I've
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: been a Street Fighter guy since I think the arcades
- 1:04:38Speaker 3: when Street Firry two showed up. Never played the original
- 1:04:41Speaker 3: until after, but Street Firry two was a phenomenon.
- 1:04:44Speaker 4: It was everywhere.
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: It was even in like pizza pizza shops and you
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: know it was it was like two different places in
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: the mall.
- 1:04:53Speaker 4: So you could play it just about anywhere I am.
- 1:04:57Speaker 4: It was wild.
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: It was wild when when it popped, it was like
- 1:04:59Speaker 3: the biggest thing imaginable. And I managed to get my
- 1:05:04Speaker 3: parents to get me Street Fighter two Turbo for the
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: Superintendo when that came out, and I just remember having
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: a blast with that. But when I really got sucked
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: in was like when street Fighter Alpha came out. That
- 1:05:15Speaker 3: series just waw, Like I still absolutely love those games
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: to this day.
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: Record of you playing the game, Oh yes.
- 1:05:23Speaker 4: I absolutely.
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: I used to stream professionally, so to speak, quote unquote,
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: not really for for goog dot com. Uh yeah, they
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: have their own stream team and I was a member
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: for like two or three years, and one day they
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: they had they might still have it.
- 1:05:45Speaker 4: I don't know if it's still there. I hope. So
- 1:05:47Speaker 4: street Fighter Alpha too.
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: There was a PC port. Now, I have to tell
- 1:05:52Speaker 3: you the PC port is terrible, absolutely terrible. Tons of
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: frame drops, lots of input, it's it's it's pretty bad. So,
- 1:06:02Speaker 3: you know, in an effort to make my stream of
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: this game entertaining, I'm like, okay, what if I take
- 1:06:07Speaker 3: the worst possible character on the worst possible port and
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: try to beat this game on the hardest difficulty. Ah,
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: So for an hour and a half straight, I played
- 1:06:18Speaker 3: as Dan on the hardest difficulty on the Street Fighter
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: Alpha two PC port uh and it was. It turned
- 1:06:26Speaker 3: into a phenomenon. It's probably my biggest dream.
- 1:06:29Speaker 4: I ever did.
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: There because people started coming in to watch and and
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: they started like just because my my hand minor net
- 1:06:37Speaker 3: handles pantsls errand they just started randomly like replacing words
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: in video games with pants and posting them in chain.
- 1:06:46Speaker 4: So people are posting things.
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: Like call of pants, sid Meyer's pants left for pants, like,
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: and it just got more and more ridiculous, to the
- 1:06:56Speaker 3: point that I'm laughing myself sick. So like there's a
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: highlight reel of the whole thing, and I put it
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: up on my watch soup and it's it's It's one
- 1:07:04Speaker 3: of my favorite things that I've ever done. I did
- 1:07:06Speaker 3: actually eventually succeed. Like I said, it took me an
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: hour and a half. I had to fight a don
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: I don't know how many times, something like something ridiculous
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: like seventeen times in a row before I could finally
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: take him down.
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: Holy shit, it was.
- 1:07:20Speaker 3: It was.
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: It was a lot of fun. I'm glad I did it.
- 1:07:22Speaker 4: I'm never doing it again.
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: That is legally so cool. I think I did not
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: realize that that was like that was the content. I
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: just watched you play a video game, and I was like,
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: this is pretty cool.
- 1:07:34Speaker 5: Oh my goodness, people love Dan. Holy crap, that character
- 1:07:39Speaker 5: has blown up for somebody who was created to be
- 1:07:43Speaker 5: such a joke character, Like he's so much fun, he's
- 1:07:46Speaker 5: got personality.
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: John, Like your face lit up when Aaron mentioned Dan,
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: Like it's just so you allude it. Obviously you are
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: a fan of Street Fighter, but like, what's your connection
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: to the movie to the video games?
- 1:07:57Speaker 5: You know, very very similar to Aaron, Like I I
- 1:08:00Speaker 5: grew up going to the arcades playing Street Fighter two
- 1:08:03Speaker 5: at all of its different iterations, when Championship editions, Super
- 1:08:06Speaker 5: street Fighter two when you got four new characters, and
- 1:08:10Speaker 5: then the Alpha series especially like we have a very
- 1:08:13Speaker 5: similar track, you know once it went into Alpha and
- 1:08:16Speaker 5: then all like the Capcom Versus games like that was
- 1:08:20Speaker 5: absolutely my childhood going into Roundtable Pizza every Friday after school.
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: Yeah, it was. It was. It was a staple.
- 1:08:29Speaker 5: And when I had Sega Saturn, like getting street Fighter
- 1:08:31Speaker 5: Alpha one and two and Marvel versus Capcom two, like
- 1:08:34Speaker 5: it was. Street Fighter was one of my favorite games
- 1:08:38Speaker 5: because I'm not a patient gamer, Like I can't do RPGs.
- 1:08:43Speaker 5: I'm not good at racing games. But you can do
- 1:08:46Speaker 5: you can jump in, you can do quick rounds.
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:08:48Speaker 5: The the combos are easy to master, you know, like
- 1:08:51Speaker 5: Martal Konas was more difficult because you have to do
- 1:08:54Speaker 5: like back forward, back back forward, you know, high punch. Oh,
- 1:08:59Speaker 5: but you know little quarter circle punch to throw a fireball.
- 1:09:02Speaker 5: Hell yeah, that's that's a that is uh that is
- 1:09:06Speaker 5: right up my alley.
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: So I'm the asshole massacists who got into soul Caliber.
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: So I'm used to like left left upright, b forward,
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: send me circle forward, left forward back while doing a grab,
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: but only in the air with these three characters as
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: the enemy.
- 1:09:21Speaker 3: Yeah, no, it's Street Fighter. Combos are pretty simple. Anybody
- 1:09:25Speaker 3: can do a jump in kick like a light or
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: medium punch into a haduke, and we're sure you can.
- 1:09:30Speaker 4: Anybody can do that. It's it's easy to figure out.
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: You A lot of people learn it on their own
- 1:09:35Speaker 4: without being taught, Like.
- 1:09:37Speaker 5: Yeah, my natural was the jump in, fierce punch, uppercut
- 1:09:40Speaker 5: to the hadu.
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: Can those are as a non street fighter fan these
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: are This is awesome to hear. This is like, I
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: have nothing against it. This is really awesome. If anything,
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: it's told me that I'm on the wrong side of
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: the fence here. I just didn't grow up with it
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: in my house. So that's awesome. And I'm super fun
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: stoke for this uh bonus round minigame over there were Yeah,
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: So this.
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: Mini game, I'm realizing this thing where it's like, I
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: think I have a really fun idea for a minigame,
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: and then the players come in with so much more
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: knowledge that I anticipate. So this mini game is being
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: delightfully called quarter circle. Back up your memory. So we're
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: gonna be giving you a list of moves, one at
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: a time. For a point, just let us know if
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: it's a real move or not, and then for a
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: second point, whose move it is, So up to two
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: points per question. However, each of your list does contain
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: one fake move, which one point for identifying that it's
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: fake and a second point for giving us a really
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: let's go with a fun, silly or creative what the
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: move would do. So we're gonna go back and forth
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: with some moves. We're gonna see if I picked ones
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: that are weird enough they might cause some confusion or
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: if your boat is gonna hammer these out perfectly the
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: whole way through.
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: Okay, look at the list. A couple of these moves
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: kind of sound like sex things.
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: Number five especially welcome to the world of fighting games.
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: Well we'll get started, Aaron. I'll give you your first move,
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: and that is the Devil verse Devil reverse, Devil reverse.
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: Yeah, that's definitely one of the sex things I was referring.
- 1:11:14Speaker 3: Yeah, that sounds like I gave her the old devil
- 1:11:19Speaker 3: reverse last sounds like it might be from Tekan, But
- 1:11:22Speaker 3: I you know what, I genuinely think.
- 1:11:25Speaker 4: No, I'm gonna say that's real.
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: And it is real. You get a point. Do you
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: know whose move it is? Though?
- 1:11:31Speaker 4: I don't just based on the name, though you can
- 1:11:35Speaker 4: guess it just based on the name. I'm gonna go
- 1:11:40Speaker 4: with Julie.
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: John, do you know whose it is?
- 1:11:45Speaker 5: I don't know, but I I would assume based on
- 1:11:49Speaker 5: the name that it's a Kuma.
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: It is an m Bison move.
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: Ah name pixel, Julie and Auma are huge.
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: Oh good, I'm glad this is working. Okay, good h John,
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: You're up next and yours is the jack knife maximum. Oh,
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: I'm gonna go. I'm gonna go real, and you would
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: be correct. Whose move is this?
- 1:12:14Speaker 5: This is tough because it's either it's either an air
- 1:12:17Speaker 5: grab going down or it could be like a guy. No,
- 1:12:21Speaker 5: that's the flash kick. Never mind, I'm gonna go. I'm
- 1:12:24Speaker 5: gonna go. Charlie.
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: Who the fuck is Charlie?
- 1:12:28Speaker 4: I was, I was. I was pretty sure I knew
- 1:12:37Speaker 4: that one. Dang.
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: All right, Aaron, you've got the air Frankensteiner.
- 1:12:44Speaker 4: I'm pretty sure I know whose it is.
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: If it's right, and you know what, I am gonna
- 1:12:48Speaker 3: go with that. I think it's real, and I think
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: it's Rainbow Mika's move.
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: What are you saying?
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: Now? Who's that that would imply that there's a ray?
- 1:13:02Speaker 4: No, it's just your name.
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: She screamed, wrestler.
- 1:13:05Speaker 4: She literally screams rainbow, which she does crazy.
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: It is the wrestler one. Oh yeah, she shows up
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: as Armika.
- 1:13:11Speaker 4: Yeah she's Armika, but it's it's short for Rainbow. But
- 1:13:15Speaker 4: I take it it's not her. For your reaction, No,
- 1:13:19Speaker 4: it's Cammy's Cammy. I wasn't aware she had an air throw.
- 1:13:24Speaker 4: I mean kind of. I guess.
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: I'll be honest. The list I pulled these from, it
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: did specify if they were grabs her in all, but
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: I didn't make.
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: A note after like thirty plus years. There are so
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: many characters and moves that I did. Yeah, this was
- 1:13:37Speaker 3: this was going to be a challenge from the off,
- 1:13:39Speaker 3: but oh yeah, I'm enjoying it.
- 1:13:41Speaker 5: So yeah, you brought you brought up Rainbow Mika, and
- 1:13:44Speaker 5: I was like, oh, that's that's my knowledge. I'm one
- 1:13:47Speaker 5: or two games behind. I think Street Fight or four
- 1:13:49Speaker 5: was the last one I really played.
- 1:13:51Speaker 4: This guy knows Street f I was gonna say, you
- 1:13:53Speaker 4: played street for Alpha three?
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: Right?
- 1:13:54Speaker 4: She was in that?
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: Oh?
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: Was she?
- 1:13:56Speaker 5: Yeah? She was like the blue mask.
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, yeah, oh I know who that is? That? Okay,
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: thank you.
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: Everyone's caught up on who Rainbow Meek is. All right,
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: I'm gonna throw it over to you now, John, let's
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: do it. Your move is the Mexican throw geez?
- 1:14:16Speaker 5: That seems so it seems so so basic and like
- 1:14:20Speaker 5: I can I can think of the character that it
- 1:14:22Speaker 5: would be, but I don't know if they are Mexican
- 1:14:25Speaker 5: or not. No, no, I know he's Mexicans. I'm gonna go.
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: Fake unfortunately, which I guess I would reveal whose it is,
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: but do you want to guess.
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: I'm I'm spacing on his name.
- 1:14:38Speaker 3: He was.
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: I'm gonna say you get the name, will still give
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: you the bonus point.
- 1:14:41Speaker 5: He was a character from from Street Fighter Alpha who
- 1:14:45Speaker 5: had like a samurai helmet looking thing and he had
- 1:14:49Speaker 5: like a charge and he bore like shoulder.
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: Pads and oh, I know who you're pleasuring. But no,
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: I don't remember his name.
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: I don't think it's this guy because it's Tea Hawk.
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: Oh wow, yeah, yes, Tea Hawk, who is not Mexican. No,
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: that was remotely, which is why I had to include it.
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: Was like, what why? What's weird?
- 1:15:13Speaker 5: Is like when you said Tea Hawk, I feel like
- 1:15:15Speaker 5: the music from his stage popped in my head from
- 1:15:20Speaker 5: Super Street Fight.
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: Wow yeah yeah, Oh my gosh. Also occurs to me.
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: There are fakes on this list. I never confirmed they
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: were fake in future games further down the line, but
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: I'm so convinced they're fake. So we'll be gre Have
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: you made it up by yourself? I mean I can
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: come up with.
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: Can you in your head?
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: We'll let that. We'll let these two players be the
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: judge when they come up. Eventually, here's an air Dracula,
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: I know, the underground Wolf. No, Aaron, your next one
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: is the knee bazooka.
- 1:15:59Speaker 4: Okay, uh.
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: Searching the mind Palace.
- 1:16:05Speaker 3: I am there's a bunch of characters who will use
- 1:16:08Speaker 3: knees in, you know, some powerful moves.
- 1:16:12Speaker 4: But I'm I'm gonna go fake on this one.
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: Mm. Unfortunately it is a real move.
- 1:16:19Speaker 4: Damn, damn.
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: Do you want to take a stab again for a point?
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: Stab at whose move it is?
- 1:16:25Speaker 3: There's there's two people who come to mind. Uh, it's
- 1:16:28Speaker 3: one or the other. I'm gonna go with aid On.
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: Who was the other one? Yeah, it was neither of
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: them was. Giles is a great choice. Though. Gyle has
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: a move called Nika. I just assume it's very American sounding,
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: having a big gun and that's what it's for.
- 1:16:48Speaker 4: That's bizarre.
- 1:16:50Speaker 5: Yeah, I can't even think of what the move, what
- 1:16:52Speaker 5: Gile's move would have been.
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: I I just look.
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: I will say Aaron is super super on the point
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: with because he chose the two white Thai characters.
- 1:17:02Speaker 4: Yeah, and I would have figured, Okay, ship John.
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: Robbed to you next, and your is the ultra fish twist.
- 1:17:12Speaker 5: Oh my goodness, what are you doing to me? And
- 1:17:16Speaker 5: I feel I feel like like eventually something has to
- 1:17:19Speaker 5: be fake. So and I have no reason. I have
- 1:17:22Speaker 5: no character to attach this too.
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: So wait a minute, remembering there's that weird disco dancing.
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: But I'm curious caliber character.
- 1:17:32Speaker 5: If it's a fake move, what's the bonus point?
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: Come up with a fun Really.
- 1:17:39Speaker 5: You even said that. You said that out loud to me.
- 1:17:45Speaker 5: I'm gonna say it's it's fake and you would be
- 1:17:48Speaker 5: our first fake move of the game. Yes, hooray. So
- 1:17:51Speaker 5: for a bonus point, what is the ultra fish twist move?
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: I know, I want to hear. It's a it's a move.
- 1:18:03Speaker 5: It's a new move in a new Street Fighter game
- 1:18:06Speaker 5: by the classic character Vega, who who does a jump
- 1:18:10Speaker 5: and grab and he sort of like twists his legs
- 1:18:12Speaker 5: around like like a like a tail around you and
- 1:18:16Speaker 5: then and then does a little sucky face on you
- 1:18:18Speaker 5: with his mask off and then he uh then he
- 1:18:22Speaker 5: then he slaps you with his claws and and pulls
- 1:18:25Speaker 5: his mask back.
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: I'm so sold that that is a damn good move.
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: I like that. I like, of all the characters to pick,
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: I think going for Vega really sold it. But I'm curious, Eric,
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: what were your thoughts on the Ultra face.
- 1:18:37Speaker 3: Well, there's a character in Ultra street Fighter for his
- 1:18:40Speaker 3: name is a Khan, and his his gimmick, so to speak,
- 1:18:43Speaker 3: is basically that he covers himself in oil, and the
- 1:18:47Speaker 3: more covered he gets, the more dangerous he becomes. For
- 1:18:50Speaker 3: some reason, but I'm just picturing as like he grabs
- 1:18:54Speaker 3: his opponent and just kind of wriggles him around his
- 1:18:57Speaker 3: body so much that his opponent is now covered in
- 1:19:00Speaker 3: and then he just squeezes and because he's so like,
- 1:19:03Speaker 3: you know, wet and you know oil, he just pops
- 1:19:07Speaker 3: out of his arms and flies across the room, Like.
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: I just need to know. When you initially described this character,
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: all I saw was that seed of Willie and the
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: Simpsons where he's looking for the grease? Do you have
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: any grease? Rips his shirt off. Yes, But John, you
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: are getting a bouth a play for that answer.
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: I really did enjoy it, Aaron, Yeah, your move is
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: electric thunder, because what else is thunder.
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: Sound? Wow? Yeah? Fuck you guys. I'm not a scientist.
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: I just play street fighter or something electric thunder.
- 1:19:47Speaker 3: There are a couple of characters who play around with electricity. However,
- 1:19:52Speaker 3: the name of this move is so ridiculous that I almost.
- 1:19:57Speaker 4: Have to go with fake.
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: Oh, this is a street fighter we're talking about. It's real, baby, unfortunate.
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: But now that you know that it's real, who does
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: it belong to Blanca?
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: He certainly does.
- 1:20:14Speaker 4: If it was gonna belong to somebody, it was gonna
- 1:20:16Speaker 4: belong to Blanca.
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: That was.
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: That was one of those picks of like, this sounds
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: way too obvious and way too fake. There's no one
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: gonna believe this. That's awesome.
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: All right, I'm gonna throw it over to you now, John,
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: all right, your move is buffalo head, which was my
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: other sex thing that I thought about.
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: I was gonna say, oh, God, what does that entail?
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: I don't want to know what that What does that
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: even mean?
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: As long as you do to quarter circle back, quarter
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: circle forward, I'm in a happy place.
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: I was gonna make it talk about like storming the
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: Capitol and then giving someone head a giant buffalo thing. God, No,
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: I'm gonna go fake.
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: This is also real. Actually, I think you are went
- 1:21:00Speaker 2: through your fake one, so I think, oh, is.
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: There only one fake one? Yeah? Sorry, yeah. I also
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: said that. Yeah.
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: Oh, I don't know if I just gave you a
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: bunch of points.
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: I'm just here it is real. Uh for the bonus point,
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: what does it belonged to?
- 1:21:14Speaker 4: Ah?
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: Who's the most likely to give you?
- 1:21:20Speaker 5: I mean there's the reason why why why I went
- 1:21:23Speaker 5: fake anyway, was because I was like, Okay, Bison Buffalo,
- 1:21:26Speaker 5: that's a uh you know, that's a that's a play
- 1:21:28Speaker 5: that that Drew might do.
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: That is smarter than me. But I appreciate you think
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: so highly of me. But the other one, who's just
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: name a character? See if you get lucky, I don't
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: have even guess. Yeah, Bison, okay you tried? Yeah that
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: was that was Oh wow. Yeah. I was sitting there.
- 1:21:53Speaker 5: I was like, Okay, who's who's the Native American character?
- 1:21:55Speaker 5: And like we already talked about Tea Hawk.
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, well again would have made more sense.
- 1:22:00Speaker 3: He's the only one I can think of who as
- 1:22:02Speaker 3: like a rapid fire like head button move. He just
- 1:22:04Speaker 3: grabs and slams over.
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: Oh yeah, we had to our final two Aaron for you,
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: I have soaring a dog moon fake, very fake. You've
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: met a game, You've met a game? Real? Good?
- 1:22:19Speaker 4: I mean, it has to be. We're at the last
- 1:22:21Speaker 4: one and I haven't had a fake one yet. So done.
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: But also, how dare you make fun of my my
- 1:22:26Speaker 2: beliefs in astrology?
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: Sorry for a motus point, What does this move do?
- 1:22:33Speaker 4: If it was a move?
- 1:22:35Speaker 3: So Julie like grabs her opponent, flips over him, you know,
- 1:22:39Speaker 3: kicking her legs in like a crescent style, and then
- 1:22:43Speaker 3: throws her opponent you know, over her head, landing on
- 1:22:47Speaker 3: all fours you know as they as they crumple to
- 1:22:50Speaker 3: the ground.
- 1:22:50Speaker 4: She's the moon and they're the dog.
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: Well thought out and toned and making a move, capcom
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: it's a free And then John, to end us off here,
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: your last move is Rolling Crystal Flash. It's real wow,
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: a whole name. But again, in case you need to
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: figure out who it belongs to, it is Rolling Crystal Flash.
- 1:23:17Speaker 4: John, you gotta have this.
- 1:23:19Speaker 5: Oh no, I mean, I'm guessing just be just because
- 1:23:23Speaker 5: it seems kind of obvious. I'm well, no, never mind,
- 1:23:26Speaker 5: I should never assume something's obvious. But I'm gonna go.
- 1:23:30Speaker 5: I'm gonna go Ken because he's got he's got his
- 1:23:33Speaker 5: grab move where they roll.
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: Oh and Aaron, do you want to correct, the poor player.
- 1:23:38Speaker 4: It's gotta be Vega.
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: It is, in fact a Vegas. Yeah moves. Yeah.
- 1:23:45Speaker 4: I was like, it's got to be him, It's gotta
- 1:23:47Speaker 4: be man.
- 1:23:49Speaker 2: I love this, just watching two experts in their fields.
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: It really was. It was the way you knew so
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: many characters and moves. I was like worried you would
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: get too many any of these, And then I think
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: the like second guessing you kind of did you just
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: you just.
- 1:24:05Speaker 3: Gave us the right list. If I'd had John's list,
- 1:24:07Speaker 3: I would have crushed it. Really, I knew almost all
- 1:24:11Speaker 3: of his and almost none of mine.
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: That is amazing situation. Well, despite that, Aaron, you are
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: winning with five points, with four four points? What point?
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: If only if only I had listened to the rules.
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: Oh my god.
- 1:24:33Speaker 5: When you were first explaining the rules, for some reason,
- 1:24:35Speaker 5: I got it in my head that you were going
- 1:24:37Speaker 5: to like list the directions on like the deep pad
- 1:24:40Speaker 5: and the button, so I was I was like starting
- 1:24:43Speaker 5: to freak out a little bit.
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: That would be so mean. And yeah, I skipped kennon
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: Ryu because all their moves are just Japanese words. I
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: don't want to it's pronounce I would I'm sorry that
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: Oh my god, this was a fantastic game, John, I'm sorry,
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: that's two losses in a row. You will come back again,
