- 0:02[SPEAKER_00]: Hi folks, welcome to the episode of Film Study.
- 0:04[SPEAKER_00]: This is Ken McKies.
- 0:04[SPEAKER_00]: It gets time for our review of the defense against the Titans from Week 4.
- 0:10[SPEAKER_00]: And joining me is a great guest when we have on a couple of times per season at least.
- 0:15[SPEAKER_00]: That's Jonah Schaffer of Baltimore Band, or Jonah's How You Do It.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_01]: I'm doing great candidate at this time last week.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_01]: I was awaiting a flight out of Lima, Peru, that never actually arrived until I think 30 hours later than, or yeah, maybe it.
- 0:35[SPEAKER_01]: 28 hours later than I expected.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_01]: So, oh, I'm going to be back on terra firma here in Maryland, counting down the days until we ask Jesse winter questions about Lamar Jackson, that you'll never answer.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I've tamar lines, a wonderful wonderful outfit.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_00]: They've lost my luggage regularly when I bid down there.
- 0:51[SPEAKER_00]: And, and make no excuses about it by the way.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you're, you're, you know, apologies about it.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_00]: With the, uh, uh, we took Aviyaka this time, and equally bad airline.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_00]: It's, it's, it's, it's, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a tough ride down to South America if you're in coach.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, this was, I think I took a flight from coming, coming, I think it was shared delta and glad-am both ways.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_01]: So I think coming back from Rio, it was Rio to São Paulo, and then São Paulo to Lima on Latam, and then the Lima,
- 1:37[SPEAKER_01]: You know, onward was Delta, which was even more disappointing.
- 1:41[SPEAKER_01]: That good ol' America, good ol' domestic airfare was, was let me down.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_01]: So I hope, can this you avail yourself of the opportunity to let Latam know, or, I guess, last year, or yours prior, because they sent me a robust survey that I, that I do to put out in my 90 complaints.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they're familiar with who we are after we had our lost luggage issue, believe me.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_01]: We, you know, it's just getting any kind of recompense?
- 2:06[SPEAKER_00]: No, because it was like 23 hours and 50 minutes that they got it for us and they had a 24-hour limit on how long they had to deliver to you.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_00]: And then we actually had to go to the airport to pick it up and this and that.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_00]: But, uh,
- 2:19[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, it sucked.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_00]: We don't need to talk about travel woes here.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_00]: Let's talk about the Ravens and the injury woes instead.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_00]: Very ugly injury-mart game for the Ravens here, including a loss of a marchax and that people probably want to rather hear us talk about.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_00]: If you want to go back to the loss logins, we can do that by the way, but this was
- 2:40[SPEAKER_00]: was bad, obviously.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_00]: And it wasn't just Lamar, of course, it was about the Humphrey, it was Andrew Voorhees, and it was, I'm getting 70.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Durham's Mike.
- 2:51[SPEAKER_00]: So pretty darn significant losses leaves the Ravens in some, some very tough spots at three positions.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, yeah, I mean, obviously, Lamar is the, is the stir, the straw that serves the drink here, but I, I, I'm really
- 3:10[SPEAKER_01]: I'm frustrated on on one hand that we didn't get a straight answer from just him into today on Durham's mouth because it's it's a little bit baffling that you would need more than 24 hours to confirm if someone popped their Achilles like it seemed like it term popped his I mean everything about his reaction yeah on film
- 3:30[SPEAKER_01]: I had the telltale signs of a tornado killer standing and that we didn't get a straight answer after the game Sunday was frustrating in disappointing and that there was no clarity today still also frustrating just because You know you slip out there to Owens Mills for the opportunity to ask these You know 20 minutes of questions of the coach expecting a little bit of clarity and you know I understand the gamesmanship angle with Lamar but like
- 3:56[SPEAKER_01]: even if you don't have a hundred percent certainty on someone like Durham, you know, the courtesy that John Harba, you know, would usually pay us was saying like the indications are that player acts as looking at this or that.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_01]: And that we didn't get that today for someone as important as Durham's might, whether you could probably say it's been on the field for like most of the Ravens' big runs this season, but it was definitely a little bit.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_01]: You know, the slabs in the media core are grieved and veiled a little bit, a little bit upset.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_00]: He was both of Lamar's consecutive passes, the 28th and the 52 that were right in a row there were passes where a German swath was held in as a pass blocker this week.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, a significant place, as to talk like the Ravens had a lot of max protecting this game.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how people would define that, but holding one guy into block to me is not max protect, but they, they, and they really basically almost never hold it to.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_00]: They had guys chipped, but then they, you know, they would go out.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, a good a good a good game from Smyth in that sense or a tough to lose him.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_00]: They do have nick of a net on the practice squad, which makes it one of the
- 5:07[SPEAKER_00]: more solvable problems that the Ravens have.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_00]: And I think we're going to save that for the second part of the show.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_00]: We've got a football to talk about here as well.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_00]: In terms of where the Ravens go from here in terms of the injuries.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_00]: But obviously, that is the primary story of this ball game.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_00]: And otherwise, there's just this football game here that we have to talk about as well.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, happy to it.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_00]: So some good things about the Ravens off and just some set up stuff.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_00]: They want the Sapkant 61 to 58.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_00]: They really had a complete lack of ability to move the ball in the second half.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_00]: The, you know, I know you look at the box score and Huntley is eight of nine for, you know, 63 yards or whatever it was.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_00]: And you think, oh, that doesn't seem too bad.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_00]: That's a pretty good replacement for Lamar.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_00]: not quite as below my level but you know that completion percentage is nice and then you realize that basically any time is a five yard penalty, it automatically stalls the drive, if you're tired or hungry is a quarter.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think one of the, I guess this, this speaks to not only how important penalties are, but also just how different Lamar and Snoop R when it comes to that explosive message, when I checked, you know, RBs don't matter.com, which is the analytics site with the, you know, the kind of real-time EPA and success rate stuff, all that data last night.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_01]: I guess it's still the case today, but Tyler Huntley from
- 6:35[SPEAKER_00]: Which is, well, we're just kind of funny.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_00]: The other thing to look at there is Tyler Huntley's, or Lamar Jackson's A.D. for the game was 11.7.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_00]: So he's really pushing the ball down the field.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_00]: And they're going to risk zoom in completes in that situation.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_00]: He's still completed 75% of his passes.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_00]: Tyler Huntley, 0.3.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_00]: That is stark, right, in terms of a difference.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, he had two ATS opportunities in the game.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_00]: One of them we threw for a five yard pass, which is, that's a complete failure with ATS.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_00]: And the other one, he threw for a completion of minus six to say flowers.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_00]: Just absolutely incredible, you know, you get to pull full amount of time in the pocket and and still that kind of stuff that's actually is big throw came on to pressure for 18 yards to uh, that was the Basin.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the Bateman, the Bateman.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_01]: That was a nice, that was a nice throw and I do think that like if the Ravens go to Atlanta against a defense that I guess is looking pretty pretty feisty right now where we're recording right now all Saints.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_01]: I felt it's happening right now.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_01]: I think last time I checked it was.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_01]: That ends up 14 to nothing, and let's see what it is right now.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_01]: 21-7, that ends up in Saints, and as we saw, it's a pretty good Saints offense, even though compromised a little bit by injuries that some of which happen in that Raymond's game, but if this offense looks
- 7:55[SPEAKER_01]: a lot like it did on this Sunday night like it did this past Saturday afternoon and Baltimore because there is this seeming refusal to to hunt explosives then I do wonder and the rate of it's lose obviously that being the the big thing or like whether there will be any kind of push
- 8:15[SPEAKER_01]: you know, from Deaclin Doyle, or for guys in that offense, for Fernando to go in that game, because it's just like the thing that always stuck out to me when you're watching some of those unfortunate situations where the mar wasn't available, and it was Tyler Huntley running the Todd Munk in offense was just not only like how much more on time, what I'm quote, Tyler Huntley seemed to work, but also just how
- 8:41[SPEAKER_01]: if you would basically run like the unrocious of that's where it was so quick and out and relying on guys to make plays and space and the Ravens didn't really have a lot of those guys.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_01]: I think this is going to be a game where if the Ravens come another one and it's three inch data yards of offense and and 28 points and you know there were the run game works even without Lamar.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_01]: I do think overnight you will hear a lot of
- 9:04[SPEAKER_01]: Declan Doyle is the next Ben Johnson comparisons that those have already started because of just what we've seen in Chicago with making it work against kingdom and then and Beijing this this past Sunday, but obviously, I think there's probably more pressure on to have a healthy and I guess, you know, anyone in this offense right now is because of what we've seen this offense can do even with sub optimal past production.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, it's a, they did not have, in my opinion, suboptimal past protection in this game.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_00]: They gave them a lot of pretty good opportunity set, but yeah, it was a, it's true.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_00]: They have not always had that.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_00]: We're talking about the offensive a little bit.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_00]: We need to move back to the defense and talk about some of the significant defensive themes from this game.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_00]: They stopped their run very well in this game.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_00]: And they did that.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_00]: in the base package, which he had not played much of and I'll get to the packages a little bit later.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_00]: But they also did it in Big Nickel again, which they had taken a week off from, for playing particularly good run defense in Big Nickel.
- 10:07[SPEAKER_00]: I thought was, you know, a nice positive sign.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_00]: I don't like that they played as many snaps of bases they did, but they didn't play it basically at all the first two weeks, just two total snaps of base and two weeks.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_00]: Then they moved to 11 each of the last two weeks and they actually had another snap that was a a 43 base snap, which is effectively another base snap Oddball and I saw in the interviews today that midter said we ran that 40 we know the play with three outside line of all three inside line backers on the field a couple of times today
- 10:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, kind of thing.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_00]: It was once.
- 10:40[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, just to be clear, but I wonder, you know, what he was, you know, what's the, what's the, what's the point in kind of saying that if you, if you, oh, it might have been five times.
- 10:49[SPEAKER_00]: I don't really remember kind of thing.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sure he does remember was one time.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think a lot of these coordinators have a pretty incredible recall.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_01]: He says, we had all three out there a few snaps yesterday.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_01]: Again, some 12 personnel kind of mixed in some groupings with those guys.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_01]: But I think as Teddy has come back, improving to be now capable of playing some more snaps that we will certainly try to find and get ways try to find ways to get used at both him and Trent.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_01]: So you're saying Ken, that was just the one time that they had all three times on the field once.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yep, one time.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, I don't know if they maybe had it in a, they didn't have a victory snap or anything.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_00]: So it wasn't, it wasn't like there was a hidden snap somewhere that I, that I, you know, might have missed or any, there's just, there's no such snap.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_00]: It was one first down, you know, and it's an interesting change of pace.
- 11:38[SPEAKER_00]: It's a nice thing to put on, um,
- 11:41[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the advanced scouting give them a couple extra hours of work, you know, for the other teams here about the play that might see this and maybe you play it, you know, a few times.
- 11:51[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the similar thing that the Ravens have done is played a little bit of 32 dime this year has been one step each in three of four games.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_00]: And the 32 dime, the big advantage of it is that you have a chance to chase down people on a play where you think the other team might have the quarterback escape the pocket or run for a first down from the pocket or throw a short pass to a running back who might get the yak for the
- 12:21[SPEAKER_00]: for the first down.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_00]: And they've done a three times hundred basically the lack of situations.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_00]: Last year with 3rd and 5, they were trying to stop the quarterback.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_00]: The first one was a 3rd and 16.
- 12:30[SPEAKER_00]: They ran it in the Indianapolis game and they stopped him after a seven yard run.
- 12:34[SPEAKER_00]: But it's something that Ravens have not played.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_00]: really at all in an meaningful way in 25 years.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_00]: The last time they played it was in 2001, where they had a very regular use to jump it with Jamie Sharper and Lewis on the field at the same time.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_01]: Do you think that is just a...
- 12:55[SPEAKER_01]: Reflects to the desire of the coaching staff to get Trent Simpson's flitzing ability on the field and believing that the drop-off coverage wise is not really all that important if there is any at all.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_00]: No, I think it's more Trent and Simpson to run down the play once it breaks the pocket.
- 13:15[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's the real value of it.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_00]: If you blitz with them, you got better past rush options on the field that you could put the Trent and Simpson.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_00]: That's what they take Trent and Simpson off and they put on a rush dime or they put on their other elements of the dime that could help them rush the passer.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_00]: It's really, they want to, they need to run down somebody of Trent Simpson is on the field.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_00]: And I think Trent Simpson's past-brush capabilities are kind of overrated.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he's so great, run and tackle downhill, you know, bumper.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_00]: He's, that's where his real value has been this year.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_00]: I don't really think it's been as a, as a past-row, there was his, he's, you know, he's given a little bit of that, but that's kind of like the icing on the cake of Trent Simpson.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, I think he's, he's the guy that you want.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_01]: to take on the linebackers in the hall, as opposed to Rokon, because you try to have Rokon in coverage.
- 14:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 14:05[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, stop through on very well.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_00]: We talked a little bit about that.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_00]: They got outstanding pressure on ward in this game.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's really underrated.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_00]: I did see one graphic that kind of had it.
- 14:16[SPEAKER_00]: They basically didn't rush anybody and they got a bunch of pressure.
- 14:20[SPEAKER_00]: And I've got I've got detail on that for for in the later a little bit later in this part of the show.
- 14:26[SPEAKER_00]: But the problem was ward was awfully effective
- 14:32[SPEAKER_00]: getting away from pressure and then making a big play after getting away from pressure a couple of with his legs and several with his arms, including some of the biggest plays they had.
- 14:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yet the commentary from winter today and the much where this kind of tracks with the trend lines you've seen from other themes going against this Ravens defense, he said the Titan's
- 15:01[SPEAKER_01]: which was a little bit different than they had done going into the game, so they were very production conscious.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_01]: I would say, if you go back and watch all the third downs, they were in split back formations, should be both edges.
- 15:10[SPEAKER_01]: When you rush four against seven, it is going to look like what it looks like.
- 15:14[SPEAKER_01]: So I thought the guys rushed pretty well overall, but you know, you talked about on Sunday, needing better finishing and on Monday, today,
- 15:23[SPEAKER_01]: need a better coordination among, you know, I guess the disparate parts in that Raven's past rush, but, you know, I agree with you.
- 15:29[SPEAKER_01]: I think I was probably more impressed by overall the interior rushers on Sunday.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, the flash is especially early from my green on the play that leads to the Trent Simpson interception, what we're definitely notable, but I do think we've kind of
- 15:50[SPEAKER_01]: you might get kind of a zero performance or close to a zero performance from from the interior, but you get a pretty nice showing from the edge rush and then some weeks it's a little bit closer to the the other end of the spectrum where it feels like majority of the impact players are coming from those detackles and the three texts and you know maybe even the nose and then you're not getting as much as you would like from from the edges when you're winning regularly.
- 16:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so I think what he's talking about when he's talking about those things, and you've hit on it here, but for overall containment, they're going to need to get good containment from that edge in order to not let Ward leak out the way he did.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_00]: And Ward had had a lot of serpentine movement around that pocket, as well as leaving the pocket.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_00]: I'm very impressive, by the way, I was talking to the Titans guys on, I know you're full episode.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, how close are they to giving up on Cam Ward after game like he had against the Giants last week, and he didn't look particularly good, and he said he didn't think they were really ready to do it just yet, and boy, I mean, no way would you give up on that guy.
- 16:54[SPEAKER_00]: He did a lot of really positive things against the Ravens.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_00]: really out through his opportunity set very significantly in the game.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_00]: But anyway, a game where I think that There was so much more.
- 17:09[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Kim Ward.
- 17:10[SPEAKER_00]: I don't mean this to go off like it sounds, but yet it's the easy comparison to make.
- 17:16[SPEAKER_00]: Kim Ward has Lamar Jackson-esque
- 17:20[SPEAKER_00]: complimentary contributions he makes to the offense.
- 17:23[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't have this kind of read option value, so we'd stop, but we'd take that right out of there.
- 17:27[SPEAKER_00]: But he does have value in terms of generating down-field penalties for his receivers that we saw in this game, and some of it's on the Ravens, but some of it's on a function of who Cam Ward is.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_00]: And the other thing that I thought was really impressive, he obviously made scramble, he plays with his legs, including a
- 17:50[SPEAKER_00]: Two and a half minutes left or whatever it was when he ran down the field towards that right side line and picked up what 2225 yard something like that and
- 18:00[SPEAKER_00]: uh... you know just he's he's a lot of other contributions he he makes it that the stress defenses in a very positive way if you're forced to defend him in a different way the Ravencinn actually use a spy but you have to use more underneath coverage is in zone you have to drop war guys to coverage you're almost forced to do some of the foreman uh... uh... rush things that midter did in this game and uh... you know i thought
- 18:26[SPEAKER_00]: large of the effective at getting that pressure and they're very ineffective at converting it into anything, anything useful results.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, what is, what is, what is, can't more, it's way, I wonder.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_01]: He's a bigger boy, $219, I wonder.
- 18:42[SPEAKER_01]: I was gonna say maybe just to hold off some of the, the pitchforks and torches, people manage you for, for comparing to, to Lamar, I was gonna say, Millik Willis, but then I realized like, but Millik Willis at this point might be actually faster than Lamar, based on just kind of, you know,
- 19:03[SPEAKER_01]: the lack of wear and tear that he has and the fact that he's not been in the league for as long as tomorrow and I wonder maybe his like Baker may feel kind of a decent calm like Baker may feel that in his prime I guess we're maybe aging out of that but like he was always a guy that you found pretty hard to bring down to the ground and had the arm strength had the the Hutspa to try things that
- 19:26[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe as they were going on as they run 14 looked a little bit crazy, but when they actually connected, you wonder like, oh yeah, this guy does have one one talent in terms of his in terms of his draft potential.
- 19:40[SPEAKER_01]: It was interesting, I think, both Monning Jones, the former ESPN commentator, he's now, has his own YouTube podcast, whatever was remarking today on the kind of vitriol from the Tennessee media to work anymore.
- 19:57[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not sure, can if you saw.
- 19:59[SPEAKER_01]: Any of the stuff that happened post game with Camoard, but I guess what the Titans media does, I'm not sure if it's just on the road or home or whatever, but like they do the coach first and then all the media floods into the locker room, and then I guess they bring everyone back out for the quarterback and the Titans reporters who were in Baltimore yesterday,
- 20:19[SPEAKER_01]: were a little bit delinquent in getting back so that the press conference room and so came more, which was just kind of drumming his fingers on the lectern, just having to wait for media and you know, there was some, I guess it was kind of a live, a live mic and then live camera of just his his displeasured, but you know that they're obviously earlier episodes of
- 20:42[SPEAKER_01]: the Titans media pretty openly going after him.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_01]: I mean if you remember that clip I think after what week one or week two where they just straight up asked him like what it is, what is it that you think you do well right now?
- 20:53[SPEAKER_01]: I was an energetic quarterback and that was
- 20:57[SPEAKER_01]: pretty stark compared to I think other markets that you see and I think Pomani Jones's suspicion was that like all this has the the co-sign of people higher up in that Tennessee front office that it's okay to go to back this way.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_01]: Right like you we just want to kind of ostracize them so that maybe we can move along because you know that this is this is not the guy I think he was what ran Carthons pick so it's a different different front up front office group that's I mean the charge here and maybe if you ostracize them then Yeah, you can really sync this is and if we can go find ourselves in the quarterback in the next in next year's draft, but Definitely we're we're devops that come in coming at Asheville
- 21:39[SPEAKER_00]: So, the Adams daughter, who but Adams daughter, who now owns the team, and I forget to Susan Adams, Kate Adams, I forget what her name is exactly, but she's now a 5560 year old woman, I would guess, and she's reportedly has the reputation of being a drum beats, fire, the coach, fire, the GM, in alternate years.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_00]: kind of thing and that's led to a real lack of stability.
- 22:05[SPEAKER_00]: But I want to go back to something you said earlier, because this is really cool.
- 22:09[SPEAKER_00]: You realize how good the Ravens PR staff is that their, um, you know, various frustrations can occur with a PR staff anywhere.
- 22:19[SPEAKER_00]: But the PR staff here, at least coaches the players extremely well on how to behave.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_00]: Someone's at the moment.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, yes, some might say too well, but but you know, you know what you're getting.
- 22:28[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, if you I I kind of like that because I've got no interest in a softball flume flamery question and I know there are certain reporters that's they're fine with that and they're fine just getting their name on the record.
- 22:39[SPEAKER_00]: What I want to ask a football question.
- 22:41[SPEAKER_00]: I'm there.
- 22:42[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I want to ask a question about something that I think is meaningful about about football and I'll try and get an answer out of them in a way that hopefully, you know, I can figure out how to get that.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_00]: You know, like you talk about the opponent's strategy instead of the row and they get a good sense of, you know, what John Harbond knows about football and you know, he'll give you some access to that point where it's will never do it when you're talking about the Ravens.
- 23:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, obviously I don't know if we've had like a whole lot of I don't know if you have like a lot of great X's and those questions after games this year.
- 23:17[SPEAKER_01]: I think the probably deepest that we've probed was about the third and one decision after the New Orleans game.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_01]: And I think probably the most revealing details that we got from that came a day later when when
- 23:31[SPEAKER_01]: Jesse told us like it wasn't really third and one it was more like third and one and a half, third and two and that informed informed their decision making but like we haven't really had a whole lot of
- 23:43[SPEAKER_01]: gems, I guess, from the, from the guys at the, at the, at the, at the, at the mic, this here, just like talking.
- 23:49[SPEAKER_01]: And that was just because a lot of this stuff has been bigger picture of questions about Jesse and his first time or the comeback in Rio.
- 23:55[SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah, it's, it's always interesting to see what kind of is asked of, of different teams, different quarterbacks, different coaches around the country when that stuff goes viral.
- 24:05[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 24:06[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 24:08[SPEAKER_00]: Um, what else to talk about this?
- 24:10[SPEAKER_00]: So really about three or four plays in this game, which I thought the game.
- 24:15[SPEAKER_00]: basically was decided on and it was relatively few and and he realized from this game I think as much as any how important that turnover battle is because two of them are the interception of the force fumble the interception obviously set up the ravens first touchdown from 37 yards away I think uh... it stopped the drive which had already packed across the fifty uh...
- 24:36[SPEAKER_00]: That's it.
- 24:36[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's true.
- 24:37[SPEAKER_00]: I get across the way.
- 24:37[SPEAKER_00]: They got a pretty good return.
- 24:38[SPEAKER_00]: Then they got to play and then they had the intersection in return 24 yards.
- 24:42[SPEAKER_00]: And then they had the force fumble incredible run down by Kyle Hamilton.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_00]: That's going to go down as probably one of the fire seven best plays in his career, which for a lot of people it'd be number one, but, but you know, for him is.
- 24:56[SPEAKER_01]: Can I tweet this up?
- 24:57[SPEAKER_01]: Do you remember, do you know what play that was eerily reminiscent of that he'd already done early in his career?
- 25:05[SPEAKER_01]: the similar hawk down, the similar hawk down and force fumble against the Patriots in Foxboro.
- 25:11[SPEAKER_01]: I think he there's his rookie or second year.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so it was either in 22 or 23.
- 25:17[SPEAKER_00]: I think they've beat the Patriots in a really rainy game, one of those two years.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_00]: So it was at the rain similarity too, I guess.
- 25:28[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, again, I try to Google and all the stuff.
- 25:33[SPEAKER_01]: It just all I get is all I get is responses about Carnal Tade.
- 25:39[SPEAKER_01]: This was, oh, yeah, it was a forced fumble on Nelson Aguilar week 3, 2022.
- 25:43[SPEAKER_01]: It was that the Ravens were up 31 to 26.
- 25:48[SPEAKER_01]: the patriots.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if this is Mac Jones or Bailey's Abby or whatever, but they had the ball with about six minutes left.
- 25:55[SPEAKER_01]: So with the potential to put that game away, let it run.
- 26:01[SPEAKER_01]: There's a pass over the wall.
- 26:04[SPEAKER_01]: Fag alarm, Hamilton's not the coverage, but he's dropping to that side of the play.
- 26:09[SPEAKER_01]: He comes from the back side.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_01]: Nelson Outlar doesn't know what's hit him.
- 26:12[SPEAKER_01]: And then I guess it's Marcus Peters.
- 26:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Marcus Peters never got 24 right.
- 26:19[SPEAKER_01]: He had just got just secures the ball before going out of bounds because it was one of those like the balls.
- 26:25[SPEAKER_01]: Hurdling toward the sideline and you better.
- 26:27[SPEAKER_01]: make sure that you're not in no part of your body is touching that white line and he does a great job and I think the Ravens.
- 26:33[SPEAKER_01]: I believe they went on to discord touch sound and made that game look less competitive that it was but um yeah that was a game in 2020, 2022.
- 26:41[SPEAKER_01]: So if you're from or 2022.
- 26:43[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, that is eerily similar.
- 26:45[SPEAKER_00]: So those with both have to go in a similar spot on that list.
- 26:50[SPEAKER_00]: You know, a play that I think is underrated in this game.
- 26:52[SPEAKER_00]: Well, the fourth and two was a huge play because that was a stop, you know, basically that turned into a 98 yard drive the other way.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean,
- 27:00[SPEAKER_00]: Is it a 14-point flip, maybe not, but the Titans had positive expectation of net next points, even if they just left the Ravens there at the 1 or 2 yard line, and they end up giving a long touchdown drive to them that I think pretty much was a good kick in the nuts to them for the rest of the game.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_00]: They didn't have much to, well, this is that much more elite and the Titans are seeing it's going to have tough time.
- 27:26[SPEAKER_00]: Coming back and then they had the third nine to force the field goal.
- 27:29[SPEAKER_00]: That was in the second half That's actually a really big play.
- 27:32[SPEAKER_00]: They were down at the 15 yard line and match it if that had been a touchdown there then all of a sudden.
- 27:36[SPEAKER_01]: It's a much closer game At the end And then the yeah looking at Looking at you know RBSDM.com that they have win probability added.
- 27:49[SPEAKER_01]: They have exploit expert points added and the two
- 27:54[SPEAKER_01]: Surprisingly, the second most impactful play in terms of win probability was the Tony Pollard touchdown in that first quarter, I guess because of just how early it was, but obviously number one, the Titans lose seven EPA on.
- 28:10[SPEAKER_01]: that Trent Simpson interception and they they lose three EPA on the nominee matter BK fourth and fourth and goal stops so those were those were two big ones but number three surprisingly is they only lost three EPA on that play how can that how can that be oh it's because after they lost possession on the fourth and two loss even though they might have expected four and a half points
- 28:41[SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
- 28:42[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 28:42[SPEAKER_00]: I guess that's it.
- 28:45[SPEAKER_00]: If that stop was fourth and two at the round 40, it'd be a much bigger EPA swing because they'd be giving away a possession and plus territory.
- 28:55[SPEAKER_00]: Well, okay, I think it would be.
- 28:58[SPEAKER_00]: I actually maybe I don't know.
- 29:01[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe I don't know.
- 29:02[SPEAKER_00]: I'm surprised.
- 29:03[SPEAKER_00]: Let me just say I'm surprised a little bit by that by the fact that it's only three.
- 29:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah,
- 29:14[SPEAKER_00]: One of the things, if you look at it that same website, which has the fourth down calculator on it, a lot of the wind probabilities are so skewed that it's really kind of hard to tell.
- 29:26[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly how much of a difference there is.
- 29:28[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to put it up plug right now.
- 29:30[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to do this later.
- 29:32[SPEAKER_00]: for a new game management podcast we had that comes out on Monday morning.
- 29:36[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't really have any content coming out then and we put it.
- 29:39[SPEAKER_00]: We put it out today and something I can do on Sunday that doesn't interrupt the flow of other analysis that much.
- 29:46[SPEAKER_00]: But we look at all the close-coating decisions in a game like this.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_00]: and mincer made them all correctly in this game.
- 29:53[SPEAKER_00]: As far as, you know, you can tell, they're not really difficult choices.
- 29:57[SPEAKER_00]: The fourth and two was not a difficult choice to go for it.
- 30:00[SPEAKER_00]: The Raven's choice to go in fourth and one at the five was not a big difference, you know, it was a very obvious thing.
- 30:05[SPEAKER_00]: The one that was missed, interestingly enough, was the Titans gave the Ravens a big break, not going forward on fourth and three from their own 22, with about 10 or 11 minutes left to go.
- 30:14[SPEAKER_00]: That was a that was a fairly big swing and a miss.
- 30:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 30:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 30:22[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 30:22[SPEAKER_01]: It seems like he's become a very popular podcast guest, very popular podcast request.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_01]: But if you can if you can get Ryan Paganany, do you follow him on on Twitter?
- 30:34[SPEAKER_00]: I don't, but I would like to.
- 30:36[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 30:37[SPEAKER_01]: He's now doing appearances on on McAfee, and I guess that the Kelsey Brothers shows, but he was, I think the former director of analytics for the Eagles was, you know, he was the guy who,
- 30:53[SPEAKER_01]: He was the guy who revealed the kind of duplicitous things that like the Patriots would do with their, with their jumbo tron to try to phase the poster.
- 31:09[SPEAKER_00]: He was the guy who shed some light on that and that led to the NFL kind of cracking down on and just what exactly was permissible was that permissible with on on on the on the big screens But I think I know that he also did an extensive like report on the Tush push right and he might have done it on yeah and and he was maybe with the Eagles while the Tush push was going on and he had a lot of data on that or when it was first evolving
- 31:33[SPEAKER_01]: Right, right.
- 31:33[SPEAKER_01]: He's got over 100,000 followers now.
- 31:35[SPEAKER_01]: He's kind of blown up.
- 31:36[SPEAKER_01]: I think he has a podcast also with one of the New Orleans stuff football.
- 31:40[SPEAKER_01]: You know, big wigs there, but you know, obviously I knew you've been able to get a lot of people from the the realm of smart football folks.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_01]: So if you could reach out to him for to get him as a guest for a big game or a big occasion, I'm sure he would love to to talk ball about this kind of stuff because obviously this is this is just as barely
- 32:01[SPEAKER_00]: That would be I think very fun.
- 32:03[SPEAKER_00]: We have to think break here.
- 32:04[SPEAKER_00]: We'll be right back.
- 32:07[SPEAKER_00]: All right, we're back.
- 32:09[SPEAKER_00]: Jonah Shafer and Kevin Cusik talk in football.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_00]: I'll talk about the Raven's defense and we will be doing so for quite a while yet.
- 32:16[SPEAKER_00]: But anyway, having some fun do it, I appreciate Jonah's always any time we can have you on.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_00]: We talked about some of the things that still support tackling in this game by the Ravens, which is unfortunate.
- 32:28[SPEAKER_00]: I'm at a loss kind of it seems to be hacketing a lot in the secondary where it's really a problem.
- 32:33[SPEAKER_00]: One of the things that I've always said is it's not very, it's not as useful as statistic for like defensive linemen or oftentimes linebackers with their penetrating into the back field.
- 32:43[SPEAKER_00]: They make turn the player 135 degrees and actually create a bigger negative play because of it.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_00]: But anyway, what can the reasons to about their problems tackling in the secondary?
- 32:57[SPEAKER_01]: this is one of those questions that I just don't feel totally qualified for because you'd be only see the first 20, 25 minutes of practice and there's only so many practice and there's only so many technical drills that that we see and you know especially after game like after game like Sunday you don't really want to tell these guys to crank up the intensity practice because Lord knows they're hurting and Lord knows they're they're depleted at certain positions where they can't afford to lose anyone else so I guess you just this is just
- 33:28[SPEAKER_01]: You know, relying on your coaches to get these guys ready and you're trusting that the veterans on the team are, you know, just a person this game with the right level of intensity, motion, whatever, because I mean, I've never had to, you know, I've never had to wait on the other side of the A gap for someone to come through.
- 33:50[SPEAKER_01]: It's just not really something I feel qualified about besides just looking up stats and.
- 33:56[SPEAKER_01]: tell people how exactly how exactly how bad exactly the damage is or maybe how it's not that bad in some cases.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's been tough to watch at times and it probably reached the apex of difficulty as you're watching the game potentially slide away on that starke's mistackle where it ended up being extra 14 yards or so I think after after for for a take on the play that took them out of the three yard line.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_00]: And then, you know, you might as well stick the dagger in the heart of a mathematician that the opponent knows to go for two in that situation, get said.
- 34:37[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, obviously, you know, very good choice there.
- 34:42[SPEAKER_00]: And now you're down to your only line of defense, well, you have two lines of defense remaining, but you better recover that on site kick or trouble is a brewing.
- 34:56[SPEAKER_01]: a real asset test for that tackling ability in the second area because just playing around with some of the search filters before Sunday's game, I think that the area where the Ravens run defense had really struggled the most was outside zone and granted I haven't watched a lot of the Falcons run game, but I assume with what Dwayne Ledford implement it there
- 35:26[SPEAKER_01]: I think for all the, you know, virtues, I should say for all the virtues, for the virtues that Malachi Stark does have, you know, straight line speed is not one of them and I doubt that talent Hawkins is also a plus plus athlete at tracking down ball carriers.
- 35:40[SPEAKER_01]: So,
- 35:42[SPEAKER_01]: you do not want it to be a situation where it is vision or habits and versus Malachi stars or jail in Hawkins at that third level of defense and you also don't want it to be a situation where you know maybe it's a lot of off coverage a lot of a lot of you know quarters looks for for Nate Wiggins against Drake London because again just with Drake London's reach and physicality and you know his ability he's not really super dynamic athlete
- 36:10[SPEAKER_01]: in that game against the packers, but I don't think you wanted to be situation where you are asking late begins to tackle this guy, you know, on some quick, you know, just kind of tunnel screens or just kind of quick RPOs out to the flat, five times in a game or otherwise, he's probably going to get, he's probably going to lose his fair share of those.
- 36:30[SPEAKER_01]: You know, what would normally be a seven-yard game, probably turns into a 15 to 20-yard game, just because you can't expect the way it is to tackle all guys.
- 36:39[SPEAKER_01]: Probably got what 30 pounds on it, just all that efficiently.
- 36:44[SPEAKER_00]: Now, honestly, I don't know what kind of A dot, like our seaver like Drick London has had, but I know he was, he was second in the entire NFL to, you're looking up now, that's good.
- 36:58[SPEAKER_00]: He was second in the NFL to say flowers in yards per target after three weeks, I believe.
- 37:04[SPEAKER_00]: So we don't know what we don't have tonight's stuff in here and I don't know what safe flowers is exactly after yesterday, but he was at 19.3 or thereabouts coming in.
- 37:15[SPEAKER_00]: I thought that the primary problem was Drick London going deep, I would have guessed the primary problem was Drick London getting behind the defense and not a tunnel screen, it's almost doing your favor if that were the case, but you'll have to say that in a second then you'll let me know.
- 37:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, again, maybe I can throw down on this.
- 37:33[SPEAKER_01]: as you talk, but because of just how different, I think some of the splits might be more of a core effects than a particular NASplay with, but right now it's only in 8.8.8.7, which is just for kind of normal kind of summary scroll, seems pretty average or if not below average.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so he's, and it may be still with the small sample size, he's had a lot of
- 38:01[SPEAKER_00]: percentage of the value, but I don't know.
- 38:03[SPEAKER_01]: Again, he was closer to 10 yards in week 3, which was about the micropanics game, so maybe I could tell you the title.
- 38:15[SPEAKER_00]: Let's see.
- 38:17[SPEAKER_00]: I think we talked about packages.
- 38:19[SPEAKER_00]: Is there anything I really didn't say here?
- 38:22[SPEAKER_00]: Ravens didn't really have a chance in this game to get to a ton of dime packages.
- 38:27[SPEAKER_00]: They play some, but the only about
- 38:31[SPEAKER_00]: 28% in this game, they're 34% you to date, which would be the third highest in team history.
- 38:37[SPEAKER_00]: There's definitely a pre-delection to go to the dime and to go to the dime early for Jesse Mentor, which I really love.
- 38:44[SPEAKER_00]: But it really hasn't worked out that much in the last couple of games.
- 38:48[SPEAKER_00]: The primary reason, the primary reason, particularly against Dallas, was that Rivers was not a very good matchup for any of the three big Dallas receivers.
- 39:01[SPEAKER_00]: whoever they put in the slot was really outmatching rivers.
- 39:04[SPEAKER_00]: This was a great game for rivers again to get back on top.
- 39:07[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's already given four times for seven yards in this game and as whole a bunch of short stuff, obviously.
- 39:14[SPEAKER_00]: And part of the value in that is that one del Robinson is you know, five eight and he's their primary slot receiver.
- 39:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's been a journey to see just how they handle that.
- 39:27[SPEAKER_01]: I think my preference would just be to lean more into the typical base personnel and just trusts and trips in and what he can give you on the opposite side of Carl Hamilton.
- 39:41[SPEAKER_01]: But I think obviously we saw last year with LA and
- 39:47[SPEAKER_01]: You know, even at times last year with the Ravens that type of person now couldn't really work, but you Need everyone to be connected and they were just way too many times to seem like or way more times than you expect It seemed like on Sunday where guys weren't where they should have been or they were holes in the zone I think probably most agree justly you had that play where was what like Kyle Hamilton and
- 40:09[SPEAKER_01]: Nate Wiggins converging on the guy in the flat when there was a guy in the slot just completely unmarked.
- 40:14[SPEAKER_01]: We're seeing like Kyle probably should have just stuck with him.
- 40:17[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, just
- 40:20[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so let me decode what I think you're saying here and make sure there's because listeners when people talk about football, there's and it kind of depth to it really want to understand a little better.
- 40:30[SPEAKER_00]: So your what you're talking about is whether they go to dime or stay in a kind of a committed nickel, which would be probably still a big nickel on third and say medium, right, because that that's those are the ones or maybe second and eight second and nine kind of thing where you have the choice between say a big nickel and a dime.
- 40:50[SPEAKER_00]: There are a lot of other places where once you're late in a game, you're typically going to be taking Simpson off the field and putting rivers on the field and moving Hamilton to the inside linebacker.
- 41:07[SPEAKER_00]: If it's the famous stratomatic question, right?
- 41:11[SPEAKER_00]: But you're going to be doing that most of the time for every single play if you've got a certain lead in hand.
- 41:18[SPEAKER_00]: And the Ravens were at that point in a couple of times or in this game, the end of half, both times and they were at it, they've been at it other times the season, say, get city andapolis where they will just go to the diamond every single play.
- 41:31[SPEAKER_00]: But you're not saying that they shouldn't do that.
- 41:35[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think you're saying it's an alternative between big nickel and keeping Hamilton on the field on third down or on second and long as opposed to keeping Simpson on the field, he's played very well, obviously.
- 41:47[SPEAKER_00]: see it rivers versus sense it so rivers versus sense is the distinction there.
- 41:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I just, you know, I haven't dug into the the numbers as close as you don't I don't have them really available but I just think that.
- 42:03[SPEAKER_01]: the most dangerous, most first-style Ravens defense has been in the kind of John Harbaugh era of Ravens defenses, just like the thinking back to that early off, that early 20s when
- 42:20[SPEAKER_01]: You know, that that style kind of came of existence under on a rake of Martin Dale.
- 42:25[SPEAKER_01]: It was like, you know, Kyle Hamilton next to Rokwan next to Patrick Wayne and just because you'd never knew who was coming, who was going all three of those guys.
- 42:36[SPEAKER_01]: You felt you felt good about in coverage and there was just so much multiplicity when you came out up the A gap you didn't know.
- 42:45[SPEAKER_01]: literally anything was possible and I think Trent Simpson is a guy who has the foot speed to kind of be that Tampa through linebacker and just like run him with a guy up the seam if need be and you know he has the size he has the speed obviously you don't trust him to kind of hang with the guy running the whip route out of the slot if necessary but I just think that
- 43:15[SPEAKER_01]: I guess Seattle last year never really bothered with a whole lot of dime personnel.
- 43:20[SPEAKER_01]: Isn't that right, it was pretty much exclusively big nickel with even a worry there.
- 43:24[SPEAKER_01]: And in the slot, I just think that I understand why this is the kind of the time and the schedule, the little window and the schedule to get creative and see what you can do with dime, but I just wonder if ultimately in the long haul is it not,
- 43:42[SPEAKER_01]: is the Raven's best grouping, not just going to be Rokwansmith next to Kyle Hamilton and then whoever is that second off ball linebacker for the Ravens.
- 43:54[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, that's fine.
- 43:55[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you certainly are right in the sense that Big Nickel is dominated everything they've done this year.
- 43:59[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what you're describing.
- 44:00[SPEAKER_00]: Two inside linebackers Kyle Hamilton all next to each other.
- 44:03[SPEAKER_00]: So that's certainly, you know, been the way it's gone.
- 44:08[SPEAKER_01]: Um, just to to to to to to to to the ultimate exclusion of time personnel, though, as is a guess my point.
- 44:13[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 44:14[SPEAKER_00]: And I'd say that's more to the ultimate exclusion of base personnel.
- 44:17[SPEAKER_00]: Because that's what it really cuts out.
- 44:19[SPEAKER_00]: You've got it.
- 44:19[SPEAKER_00]: They've played only 24 base snaps.
- 44:21[SPEAKER_00]: Dissolete later.
- 44:23[SPEAKER_00]: And so Kyle Hamilton actually competes with with a five tech for playing time.
- 44:26[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't compete with a inside linebacker.
- 44:29[SPEAKER_00]: He replaces an inside line packer that's true and a slot corner comes in, but he actually competes with a five tick because you play a lot less base snaps because big nickel is a replacement for that.
- 44:40[SPEAKER_00]: And that's why, you know, in a lot of ways that position is dying in the NFL that that that five ticks by.
- 44:47[SPEAKER_00]: I had it for Brent Urban on a on a pod here and we were talking about exactly that topic and it didn't go that well, he's a great guy by the way, but that particular discussion part of the discussion didn't go that well.
- 45:00[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, all right, what else we want to talk about here?
- 45:03[SPEAKER_00]: Let's talk about the past version a little bit.
- 45:04[SPEAKER_00]: We've got a few of this left to do that.
- 45:05[SPEAKER_00]: So I kind of want to get down to this talk about the pressure rate.
- 45:09[SPEAKER_00]: Now, this is where the Ravens really didn't have any problem.
- 45:12[SPEAKER_00]: They got 14 pressures on 31 drop-backs that ended in a pass or sack.
- 45:18[SPEAKER_00]: that's 45%.
- 45:20[SPEAKER_00]: On those plays, the Titans only gained 47 net yards 3.4 yards per play.
- 45:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's exactly where you should hold them when when you get pressure.
- 45:29[SPEAKER_00]: One sack will turn over outstanding to get that kind of rate on it.
- 45:34[SPEAKER_00]: That five ample time space plays the whole day, 16%.
- 45:37[SPEAKER_00]: So it wasn't like word could sit back there in the pocket and make a throw.
- 45:41[SPEAKER_00]: He had some extended pockets.
- 45:42[SPEAKER_00]: He extended well after pressure.
- 45:45[SPEAKER_00]: And that was the problem to make some big plays.
- 45:47[SPEAKER_00]: But in terms of just being able to sit in the pocket, that really wasn't the issue.
- 45:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, that just kind of matches the high test.
- 45:58[SPEAKER_01]: when he was able to get outside of structure he made a couple of plays, but not a whole lot.
- 46:03[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, again, you know.
- 46:07[SPEAKER_01]: that this isn't a dynamic offense.
- 46:10[SPEAKER_01]: I think obviously, there was a lot of frustration from Rayon's hands in knowing that what the Titans hadn't, or it came more and hadn't passed for more than 20 yards.
- 46:22[SPEAKER_01]: In a single game, this season, and he comes up Baltimore, and he goes for 222 yards.
- 46:28[SPEAKER_01]: I think that there was frustration that the Titans didn't have,
- 46:33[SPEAKER_01]: They had one total first down in B3, and they come to Baltimore, and in the first quarter alone, I think they had eight first downs, so that there was some...
- 46:46[SPEAKER_01]: There were definitely some elements, some suggests elements of this type of offense.
- 46:51[SPEAKER_01]: And can't more did seem to be pulling the strings on a lot of them because as you already mentioned, the running game aside from a couple carries in the net first quarter, didn't really do a whole lot.
- 47:03[SPEAKER_01]: So I guess if you're the Ravens, you're just looking for more sacks.
- 47:09[SPEAKER_01]: period.
- 47:10[SPEAKER_01]: Like it was pretty surprising to look at the at the at the end of the game and see that Ethan Burke was the only one who managed to take down because there was ample opportunities for more sacks, you know, you had my green mist in a couple of times, you had not even had to be getting his hand on cam word jersey a couple of times, but just unable to bring him down, but you know, I guess that the Ravens did enough, you know, in that middle, like 50 minutes,
- 47:39[SPEAKER_01]: to give themselves the question they needed in case of a Lamar Jackson injury, which, of course, unfortunately, did happen, but you just wanted to see better conversion of sacs.
- 47:54[SPEAKER_01]: I've seen a lot of pressures to sacs, and that's something that I actually wrote about last week, just like what the trade and drugs and experience so far has done to mirror the Ravens' pastros experience, which is like,
- 48:06[SPEAKER_01]: definitely a juiced up level of pressures compared to last year when it just seemed like very rarely did they actually do anything to affect the passer, but it's the same problem as last year where you're just not really getting the most valuable, you know, regularly occurring kind of play on the defensive menu, which is a sack and then they're just, I guess, an experience that kind of bore itself out again all in time.
- 48:29[SPEAKER_00]: You know, this is a part of the schedule where you do expect that they'd have one break out sack game at least, you know, and they're playing a lot of teams that have problems on the offensive line.
- 48:39[SPEAKER_00]: They also play the Saints who have a good offensive line.
- 48:41[SPEAKER_00]: They play the cults who have a good offensive line.
- 48:43[SPEAKER_00]: And they play the Cowboys who have a...
- 48:48[SPEAKER_00]: You know, mixed what decent offensive line and now they played definitely well-coached Yeah, and they now they played Tennessee who was a was a very bad and banged up offensive line and they couldn't really They got the pressures but they but they you write they couldn't convert it
- 49:05[SPEAKER_00]: To one point I'd say, if anybody were to tell you that Jesse Minter did not adjust, I'm going to give you the following, and this is the next Yahoo who tells you this at the water cooler, you give them this right back, okay, because the Ravens only ran.
- 49:21[SPEAKER_00]: a five plus man pressures six times in this game.
- 49:24[SPEAKER_00]: Let me get that make sure I'm correct on this.
- 49:26[SPEAKER_00]: You have six times, 19% of the time.
- 49:30[SPEAKER_00]: Now, it happened to be the first five where five man pressures.
- 49:34[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, in the entire game.
- 49:36[SPEAKER_00]: And then they ran four floors and then a six and then every single pass rush package is a remainder of the game as a four.
- 49:44[SPEAKER_00]: every single one.
- 49:46[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 49:46[SPEAKER_00]: And they dropped people to do it and they, you know, they had some simulated pressure and they did some stunts.
- 49:51[SPEAKER_00]: They did some awful blitzing where they had a dropping outside linebacker.
- 49:55[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, all that kind of stuff was there, but it was four men rushing the passer.
- 49:59[SPEAKER_00]: He was only committing four.
- 50:01[SPEAKER_00]: So, that was an adjustment unto itself, and they'd been very unsuccessful with five-man rush, the Titan's average 10-photo yards per play on that of the Simpson Interception was one of those plays.
- 50:12[SPEAKER_00]: They still averaged 10-photo yards per play on those, and he adjusted, and he made that right about the game, and they'd just, in the last two games, each of the last two games, the Ravens had rushed 41% of the time, exactly.
- 50:27[SPEAKER_00]: five plus in those two games, exactly rounded, you know what I mean, but 41%.
- 50:35[SPEAKER_01]: I mentioned this on on our on the podcast, I do with my pal Balman Cano at the banner.
- 50:44[SPEAKER_01]: Are you disappointing, Ken, by just like how how relatively ineffective the
- 50:54[SPEAKER_01]: like Jesse mentioned, it's package has been so far, and not even blitz packages, it just like the Sims as well.
- 51:00[SPEAKER_01]: And I know you have here that, you know, they were effective when they were running Sims.
- 51:04[SPEAKER_01]: And I guess, you know, some creepers as well, but like the defining aspects of the Mike McDonald's appearance of Baltimore, and even, you know, I think probably the first year of Zach Orr as well was like,
- 51:22[SPEAKER_01]: It seemed like once a game, at least you could count on a guy coming through some gap unmarked and getting to the quarterback unabated, and there was definitely in that first game against Indianapolis, which happened to be the first, you know, that the game.
- 51:41[SPEAKER_01]: The coals off in the corner didn't have any really tape on this on this Raven's defense.
- 51:47[SPEAKER_01]: Like there was at least one or two plays where it didn't really seem like the coals had everything accounted for and it seems like now maybe just because maybe this is just like a
- 52:01[SPEAKER_01]: game where the Ravens didn't blitz a whole lot, but it doesn't really seem like for the past couple of games now, the Ravens have been able to kind of sufficiently confuse either the quarterback or the offensive line or whatever the instructions the offensive coordinator is giving to the offensive is going against the Ravens, and it seems like whatever the Ravens
- 52:25[SPEAKER_01]: winning based purely on merit of the past for our skill and not so much on the merit of like tendency breakers or just confusing.
- 52:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, if it's a line of the quarterback and getting the kind of stuff that we saw from the best of Mike McDonald and the best of that score.
- 52:42[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so that was a there's a very long question that was more like a statement and
- 52:47[SPEAKER_01]: That's as CEO to what you're the one who is breaking the study down in the so the news and I just like does does this my eye test match what what you are seeing big picture was?
- 52:58[SPEAKER_00]: The answer is quite complex and would probably take me 15 or 20 minutes to give you my theory on this.
- 53:04[SPEAKER_00]: But here's what I think has been good is a little bit different every game.
- 53:09[SPEAKER_00]: And in a Gets DAC presscott, it wasn't really the numbers that were exceptionally successful.
- 53:14[SPEAKER_00]: It was the deceptive elements.
- 53:15[SPEAKER_00]: And all they had to do was show color to DAC presscott.
- 53:18[SPEAKER_00]: And he was bothered by it.
- 53:19[SPEAKER_00]: Even when he had ample time in space.
- 53:22[SPEAKER_00]: even really I both have a space and he's still beat his expected yards for the amount of pressure they got but I mean he's got very high quality receivers and I would expect that to be the case and beat it by 18 yards I think it was in that game.
- 53:36[SPEAKER_00]: I don't have a problem with that at all.
- 53:37[SPEAKER_00]: I think that the basically mintures past rush did the job and Rio to the red expect.
- 53:43[SPEAKER_00]: It more than did the job against the Colts and you mentioned it largely and the past rush
- 53:51[SPEAKER_00]: their primary pass rush package is built around getting free runners and it's a rush dime they've been running and they're almost a third and seven or eight plus they've been running basically the exact same package every one of those plays where they had Campbell
- 54:08[SPEAKER_00]: Tavius Robinson kicked inside and green and Hendrickson on the outside through three games.
- 54:13[SPEAKER_00]: It's basically all they ran.
- 54:14[SPEAKER_00]: And that package was often unsuccessful, but when it was successful, it was Campbell used as an under on stunts that created opportunities for other players to loop and get free rushes at the quarterback.
- 54:25[SPEAKER_00]: So that was a lot of what they were generating.
- 54:27[SPEAKER_00]: for the pressures in the first three games.
- 54:31[SPEAKER_00]: So, the answer is complicated, but I think that, Mitcher is maybe, you're right in a sense, he's still feeling his way around in terms of what's gonna be the most effective thing for this particular group of past pressures.
- 54:45[SPEAKER_00]: I kind of hoped they would have tested out even more, but one thing they did test this week and they really found to be a tremendous value is non-day made a BK in the game, on third down.
- 54:56[SPEAKER_00]: And they hadn't been doing that necessarily prior.
- 54:59[SPEAKER_00]: You did a fair amount of, I guess, in Rio.
- 55:01[SPEAKER_00]: He was starting to ramp up.
- 55:03[SPEAKER_00]: The thing they still haven't tried is Travis Jones and Nonday Batapique instead of Clayus Campbell on third down.
- 55:08[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that that group could be, that duo could be more potent to morph the middle of that pocket and create some of the primary pressures that they need to then turn into cleanup.
- 55:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we don't want to step on the individual player portion, but I did like what I saw from up the Namdi Colleys partnership, but you know, as the guy who came on, to talk about Travis Jones with you, this offseason, as part of the player, reviews, less preview,
- 55:39[SPEAKER_01]: I've been impressed by Travis Jones as I always am like against the run, but I'm still waiting to see more against the past just haven't really seen a whole lot there to like honestly and I don't know if maybe some of the sub-optimal play that we've seen from Travis is like a symptom of whatever offseason chest thing was going on like whether he required surgery
- 56:09[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe they could have nipped this in the but earlier in the office isn't and he's never because he's never going to be 100% this year I don't know if that's the the case, but you know I thought we would be seeing more kind of takeover potential like we saw in week one where he's you know Square enough against quit Quentin Nelson and winning that one on one
- 56:27[SPEAKER_01]: easily, at least, you know, again against the run.
- 56:29[SPEAKER_01]: And Lord knows the Ravens are going to need Travis at his best if they're going to handle what seems like a pretty explosive, you know, Falcons or our game would put vision on or I'm sitting.
- 56:40[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 56:41[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 56:42[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I mean, that's fair enough.
- 56:43[SPEAKER_00]: And I think Travis is a guy who, um,
- 56:46[SPEAKER_00]: You know, his main thing is he's got the idea you not to double team me trait, right?
- 56:53[SPEAKER_00]: And so if you if you leave Malone you could do that.
- 56:56[SPEAKER_00]: You can you could play games to try and get after that three tech a little differently than you might normally and and try and Have Travis Jones be a guy who you're trying to take on one or one.
- 57:06[SPEAKER_00]: But he's a very tricky customer for that.
- 57:09[SPEAKER_00]: I was fairly explosive with the first step, gets in that V between two blockers that center in guard very effectively, and then that creates all kinds of stunt value with that.
- 57:19[SPEAKER_00]: He had five sacks last year, but a lot of that came after he was moved into a three-tech roll next to Jenkins, because the Ravens had 11 nose tackles, and no legitimate three-tech pass rusher, but Travis Jones had to become that, and that was really a good opportunity for him.
- 57:37[SPEAKER_00]: I've had this discussion a fair number of times.
- 57:39[SPEAKER_00]: I've thought with Ryan Mink and others, but he was by far the more impactful above the line player to try and get back as opposed to Linda Baum, for example.
- 57:50[SPEAKER_00]: And Linda Baum, first of all, when you get into the money relative to talent, you know, there's no doubt I'm right about the Jones versus Linda Baum thing.
- 57:58[SPEAKER_00]: I think you probably agree, although I let you speak for yourself.
- 58:01[SPEAKER_00]: But even if it was Linda Bomb at 20 or 22 million, I still rather have Travis Jones for the 65 or 70% of the snaps that he can play and give you what Travis Jones gave me last year for example.
- 58:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I still think we're still waiting for him to hit those heights, and obviously the big part of the financial element is just the weird situation with the, you know, it was going to go to arbitration and the Ravens were like, hey, let's, let's not bother with arbitration, let's, let's give you a deal and you know, if you compare what he can do and you look at what he's, what he's getting contract wise compared to some of the other, you know,
- 58:41[SPEAKER_01]: Top tier, no stack holes or three decks.
- 58:44[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 58:44[SPEAKER_01]: It definitely does seem like a bargain.
- 58:47[UNKNOWN]: Yeah.
- 58:48[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 58:48[SPEAKER_00]: Jonas, always a pleasure talking.
- 58:50[SPEAKER_00]: Football with you will back to talk some individual players in the second Apple.
- 58:53[SPEAKER_00]: Tough looks about what your projects you're working on and where they can find your work online.
- 58:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, just a safer on x slash Twitter, follow us on Instagram at all banner sports.
- 59:06[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, the banner.com coverage of Ravens, coverage of the commanders.
- 59:11[SPEAKER_01]: If you're a weirdo falls, both themes.
- 59:14[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, just popping up with you every once in a while.
- 59:18[SPEAKER_00]: Who does your commander's coverage by the way?
- 59:22[SPEAKER_01]: that would be Kevin Rounds, who used to cover the, I think the YU for this all-interviewing, but came over and is doing great work and was in London to cover the Ethan Kalemanakis, whatever, there you go.
- 59:39[SPEAKER_01]: What were the, what was the nickname that I saw for him, something Greek inspired for like,
- 59:50[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to I don't want to do any do a disservice to so that's the great nickname that I saw.
- 59:56[SPEAKER_00]: Alright fair enough.
