- 0:21Speaker 1: I have a Hall of Fame.
- 0:22Speaker 2: It is called the baddest people to ever walk the planet.
- 0:26Speaker 2: And Gary Sheffield is a first ballot Hall of Famer
- 0:30Speaker 2: in that Hall of Fame. And it's always a pleasure
- 0:32Speaker 2: to see him. It's always a pleasure to speak to him.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Haven't spoken to him since we had him on.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Out in Lake Tahoe. Man, I miss that place, Gary.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Man, I tell you, man, I miss that golf course, too, man.
- 0:44Speaker 3: That's one of the best golf courses I've played on.
- 0:48Speaker 3: But them greens, man, they're so fast.
- 0:50Speaker 1: That was bad.
- 0:52Speaker 2: The last time we saw you in Lake Tahoe, Larry David,
- 0:56Speaker 2: you were wondering whether or not Larry David, who was
- 0:59Speaker 2: on the driving range that day with you, you were
- 1:01Speaker 2: having a conversation with him. If he wanted to play
- 1:03Speaker 2: golf with you, and I assured you that he wants
- 1:05Speaker 2: to play golf with you, did you talk to Larry
- 1:07Speaker 2: about it?
- 1:09Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah. We're going to have our match. He told
- 1:11Speaker 4: me when I come to L.A.
- 1:13Speaker 5: Nice.
- 1:13Speaker 4: We're going to get out there and play. You know,
- 1:15Speaker 4: he's a great guy.
- 1:16Speaker 3: I love his work, and he's one of the best
- 1:20Speaker 3: to ever do it.
- 1:22Speaker 2: It dawned on me as I was driving in today,
- 1:24Speaker 2: and correct me if I'm wrong, I believe you have
- 1:27Speaker 2: played for five of the eight remaining teams in the
- 1:31Speaker 2: postseason in Major League Baseball.
- 1:34Speaker 1: And Tampa wasn't one of them, but you were born
- 1:36Speaker 1: in Tampa. So it begs the question, who is Gary
- 1:38Speaker 1: Sheffield rooting for?
- 1:39Speaker 3: Well, I was sitting next to my wife and my buddy,
- 1:45Speaker 3: Cheryl Penny.
- 1:48Speaker 4: At the Rays in.
- 1:48Speaker 3: The Yankees game, we was in the third row and
- 1:52Speaker 3: a bunch of my son's friends was calling to say,
- 1:55Speaker 3: why are your dad on our screen? And so they
- 1:59Speaker 3: was like, well, he's not made, when something happened in
- 2:02Speaker 3: the game, he's not doing anything. He's just staring, glazing,
- 2:06Speaker 3: staring at the situation. I say, well, because I have
- 2:08Speaker 3: to stay neutral. so i can't i can't go out
- 2:13Speaker 3: there like i'm rooting for the yankees in my hometown
- 2:16Speaker 3: i can't do.
- 2:17Speaker 6: It as somebody who grew up in tampa calls tampa
- 2:21Speaker 6: their hometown still are you surprised just as everybody else
- 2:25Speaker 6: that where are all these tampa bay rays fans coming
- 2:28Speaker 6: from because all we hear about is how bad their
- 2:30Speaker 6: attendance is gary's laughing.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Well You know, like, I know the area so well.
- 2:38Speaker 3: You know, I used to live by the stadium, you know,
- 2:41Speaker 3: when I lived in St.
- 2:42Speaker 4: Pete. And I grew up in Tampa my whole life.
- 2:45Speaker 3: So it's almost like it has something to do with
- 2:49Speaker 3: demographics and location. And a lot of times, you know,
- 2:53Speaker 3: certain times, you know, a day, you don't want to
- 2:56Speaker 3: drive across the bridge.
- 2:57Speaker 4: And when the game over, you don't want to have
- 2:59Speaker 4: to drive back.
- 3:00Speaker 3: So opposed to the opposite way, driving to Tampa is
- 3:04Speaker 3: a lot.
- 3:04Speaker 4: Different than driving to St. Pete.
- 3:06Speaker 3: So that's why the fan base is inconsistent for what
- 3:11Speaker 3: people think. But when you have a real good team
- 3:13Speaker 3: like the Yankees or the Cubs or, you know, like
- 3:16Speaker 3: a big-time name, Dodgers, people come out for that.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Yep.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Gary, does it bother you at all that Yankees are
- 3:24Speaker 2: running around playing baseball with beards, with facial hair?
- 3:29Speaker 3: Well, I know if old man was still living, that
- 3:34Speaker 3: wouldn't happen.
- 3:38Speaker 4: I just think that for me, it lost a little luster.
- 3:41Speaker 3: It lost a little mystique to the organization when you start.
- 3:47Speaker 4: Fitting in and doing what everybody else is doing. That's
- 3:50Speaker 4: what made the Yankees stand out. They had their own policies,
- 3:53Speaker 4: their own rules.
- 3:55Speaker 3: They conduct themselves the way they do.
- 3:59Speaker 4: And they don't waver for anyone.
- 4:00Speaker 3: And I think that that's been compromised and you can
- 4:03Speaker 3: see it on and off the field.
- 4:05Speaker 4: Yep.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Gary, I'm wondering, because you played for so many teams
- 4:09Speaker 2: and you played in so many big moments for those teams,
- 4:12Speaker 2: can you articulate, is it different being a Yankee, the pressure?
- 4:17Speaker 2: Is it different being a New York Yankee?
- 4:21Speaker 4: It is.
- 4:22Speaker 3: Being a Yankee alone is more pressure. It's more, everything
- 4:27Speaker 3: is added times 10. Every pitch, every play, every situation
- 4:32Speaker 3: is magnified.
- 4:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Well.
- 4:35Speaker 3: The thing about that is if you're prepared for the moment,
- 4:39Speaker 3: you're prepared in your profession, then there's no such thing
- 4:43Speaker 3: as pressure. Pressure is only for the people that's not prepared.
- 4:48Speaker 3: And that's why I always say when anytime I hear
- 4:51Speaker 3: somebody say, well, they got to get used to their
- 4:55Speaker 3: contract or they have to get used to their city.
- 4:58Speaker 4: Well, they didn't make those excuses for me.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:02Speaker 4: You see my point?
- 5:03Speaker 1: Yes. Right?
- 5:05Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying?
- 5:07Speaker 3: So they didn't make those excuses for me. I had
- 5:09Speaker 3: to perform right away.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:12Speaker 3: And so I didn't have time to be worried about
- 5:14Speaker 3: a contract or what city I'm playing in. I know
- 5:19Speaker 3: the Yankees fans bring out the energy. You know, I
- 5:22Speaker 3: knew it for me.
- 5:23Speaker 4: Yep. So it was no pressure to that. They are
- 5:26Speaker 4: on my side.
- 5:28Speaker 3: The pressure comes from you not being prepared and you
- 5:31Speaker 3: worrying about what if I don't do something?
- 5:34Speaker 4: What's going to happen?
- 5:35Speaker 3: And that's what people focus on in New York about
- 5:38Speaker 3: if I don't do my job, what comes with it?
- 5:42Speaker 4: What do your job?
- 5:44Speaker 1: And you don't have to worry about it, yes. You
- 5:46Speaker 1: don't have to worry about it.
- 5:48Speaker 6: Gary, right now, as a Yankee fan, I am all
- 5:51Speaker 6: doom and gloom as we head into game three tonight.
- 5:54Speaker 6: Stu Gotts keeps telling me, The Yankees, they're going to
- 5:57Speaker 6: come back and win this series. I've seen with my
- 6:00Speaker 6: eyes what this lineup is doing right now. I don't
- 6:02Speaker 6: see any path. But if the Yankees do come back,
- 6:05Speaker 6: what's it going to take?
- 6:06Speaker 1: Soothe them, Gary.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Basically, the pitching staff, if you look at the Yankees
- 6:11Speaker 3: pitching staff, that's.
- 6:13Speaker 4: More than enough to win.
- 6:14Speaker 3: And those guys can put up zeros on anybody any
- 6:17Speaker 3: given night.
- 6:19Speaker 4: And I think that's going to have to be the key.
- 6:21Speaker 3: To this, you know, I know like people are talking
- 6:24Speaker 3: about the lineup, how the lineup is set up.
- 6:28Speaker 4: I look at the way they got this lineup set up.
- 6:31Speaker 3: I would do this lineup totally different than the way
- 6:33Speaker 3: it's set up right now because I would use what
- 6:36Speaker 3: the Rays is using right now to bring problems to
- 6:40Speaker 3: the defense.
- 6:41Speaker 4: And the Yankees don't have that.
- 6:43Speaker 3: You got to put pressure on the defense and they'll
- 6:45Speaker 3: make mistakes, too. And so when you have a lot
- 6:49Speaker 3: of speed out there and guys moving on the base
- 6:51Speaker 3: paths and trying to create runs, you're basically putting pressure
- 6:55Speaker 3: on the defense.
- 6:56Speaker 4: And that's when you see mistakes happen.
- 6:58Speaker 5: Gary, can you take us into the dugout when you
- 7:02Speaker 5: come out and you're ready for this big game and
- 7:04Speaker 5: you commit?
- 7:05Speaker 1: Bunch of errors in the first inning.
- 7:07Speaker 5: Does it feel like, all right, now we're in quicksand
- 7:09Speaker 5: and we're all trying to hit five-run home runs with
- 7:12Speaker 5: nobody on base just to get back in the game?
- 7:15Speaker 3: I think with that being said, a lot of guys
- 7:18Speaker 3: trying to do too much. And the players that's making
- 7:23Speaker 3: the mistakes, they're great players to a certain degree in
- 7:27Speaker 3: certain areas. But when you're talking about the playoffs, you
- 7:31Speaker 3: don't have to be great. All you have to do
- 7:34Speaker 3: is do your job. If you just focus on doing
- 7:37Speaker 3: your job, the guy next to me does his job,
- 7:40Speaker 3: we win. But when somebody don't do their job, somebody
- 7:43Speaker 3: try to do it for them, now they're doing too much.
- 7:46Speaker 3: And then that's when it escalates. And you see it
- 7:49Speaker 3: just piled on. It just kept piling on. And then
- 7:52Speaker 3: what happens is the pitchers start feeling pressure, and then
- 7:56Speaker 3: he tries to do more. And next thing you know,
- 7:59Speaker 3: you'll walk here, a base hit here. And so that's
- 8:03Speaker 3: where it just escalates into one problem after the other.
- 8:08Speaker 4: Yep.
- 8:08Speaker 1: I will tell you this.
- 8:10Speaker 2: I'm interested in what adjustments you would make, but Taylor
- 8:12Speaker 2: and Mikey A, they would accept you as the Yankees
- 8:15Speaker 2: manager today if it meant Aaron Boone would go away.
- 8:18Speaker 4: Yes. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Because there's a lot of things
- 8:23Speaker 4: I wouldn't tolerate. That's number one. Yes.
- 8:26Speaker 3: I just don't tolerate certain things when it comes to
- 8:29Speaker 3: going out here and competing.
- 8:30Speaker 4: Yeah. You know, we compete to the death. Yes.
- 8:33Speaker 5: And.
- 8:34Speaker 3: And when I got a bunch of guys I can
- 8:36Speaker 3: look at and say they finna give me everything, then
- 8:39Speaker 3: I know I'm going to win. And the thing is,
- 8:42Speaker 3: is that when I look at this team, they have
- 8:44Speaker 3: more than enough to win.
- 8:46Speaker 4: More than enough. Yes. And do it easy.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Right.
- 8:50Speaker 3: So the thing is, that's why I say I would
- 8:52Speaker 3: change this lineup and.
- 8:54Speaker 4: I would put the speed at the top. Right. And
- 8:57Speaker 4: I would have my guys running at all costs. Yep.
- 9:00Speaker 3: And we would put so much pressure on the opposing
- 9:02Speaker 3: team because that's what's happening to them. You know, these guys,
- 9:07Speaker 3: and by no means, it ain't easy to go into
- 9:09Speaker 3: Tampa and beat these guys. Even when I was playing,
- 9:12Speaker 3: it's hard to go on Tampa and win games.
- 9:15Speaker 7: Right.
- 9:15Speaker 4: Those guys play hard. They play hard.
- 9:18Speaker 6: Gary, that is all me and Mikey A are asking for.
- 9:21Speaker 6: Just a little bit of accountability from this Yankee team.
- 9:24Speaker 6: We cannot watch Trent Grisham jog.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Half-ass for a fly ball anymore. I wouldn't put up
- 9:32Speaker 4: with none of it.
- 9:33Speaker 1: I told you.
- 9:34Speaker 4: I wouldn't put up with none of it.
- 9:35Speaker 1: I'm telling you right now. No, I know you wouldn't.
- 9:38Speaker 3: I have to have players playing with a sense of urgency.
- 9:43Speaker 3: And when you play for the New York Yankees, Everything
- 9:47Speaker 3: is a sense of urgency. Now, I will show support.
- 9:50Speaker 3: I will give you all the support you need. But
- 9:53Speaker 3: I got to have results. I'm more like the old man,
- 9:55Speaker 3: you know, Steinbrenner. If I pay you, I expect something.
- 10:02Speaker 4: I expect you to give me everything you got.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Yep, or I'm going to stop paying you.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Wait, Gary, you know so much about baseball, and you
- 10:14Speaker 2: love the game of baseball so much.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Have you ever thought about managing? Has that ever crossed
- 10:19Speaker 1: your mind?
- 10:21Speaker 3: No, it hasn't because, you know, the thing is the
- 10:23Speaker 3: game has changed and it's a sabermetric driven game. And
- 10:29Speaker 3: I think that I talked to David Roberts about this
- 10:33Speaker 3: and he explained it very well to me. It's like,
- 10:37Speaker 3: you know, the way his managing style is, he was
- 10:39Speaker 3: a sabermetrics guy when he got the job. That's pretty
- 10:42Speaker 3: much how he got the job because he knew it
- 10:44Speaker 3: so well. But he also had some stuff inside that
- 10:49Speaker 3: he wanted to do on the field or with certain
- 10:51Speaker 3: players that he wasn't allowed to do right away as
- 10:55Speaker 3: a manager. The same manager says this, he went with
- 10:58Speaker 3: the program. But as you win over time, then you
- 11:03Speaker 3: can implement certain things into how you manage and how you.
- 11:07Speaker 4: Deal with certain situations.
- 11:08Speaker 3: And I think that part, I'll have to gain patience
- 11:12Speaker 3: to be able to get to that point. But I
- 11:15Speaker 3: know what I know, and I know what it takes.
- 11:18Speaker 3: And so a lot of times I would make sure
- 11:21Speaker 3: that I don't interfere old school with what's going on
- 11:24Speaker 3: right now. Right.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Plus it really get into your golf game. I mean, just. Yeah,
- 11:28Speaker 1: that part too.
- 11:31Speaker 2: You and I were texting back and forth about what's
- 11:34Speaker 2: going on in the NFL with the referees. And two
- 11:36Speaker 2: referees have been suspended for a week for misconduct.
- 11:42Speaker 1: One of them cursed at a player, Trey McBride, the
- 11:44Speaker 1: tight end. of the Arizona Cardinals.
- 11:46Speaker 2: I say all that to ask you, Gary, what's the
- 11:49Speaker 2: worst thing an ump has ever said to you?
- 11:53Speaker 3: You know, it's what he didn't say, you know, and,
- 11:57Speaker 3: and because it's what he didn't say is, is I,
- 12:01Speaker 3: I got in a situation where I was a young
- 12:02Speaker 3: player and, and the umpire was Joe West and, I
- 12:08Speaker 3: looked back at Cowboy.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Cowboy!
- 12:10Speaker 4: And I said, yeah, the Cowboy.
- 12:12Speaker 1: I said, I.
- 12:14Speaker 4: Looked at him and he looked at me and he said,
- 12:16Speaker 4: don't you say it. Like that.
- 12:20Speaker 3: And I say, well, you know what I was thinking.
- 12:22Speaker 3: He said, you know, you don't have enough time in
- 12:24Speaker 3: the big leagues yet, son, to question anything.
- 12:28Speaker 4: And I said, yes, sir. I said, yes, sir.
- 12:33Speaker 3: And because if I would have said something to the cowboy,
- 12:35Speaker 3: my career would have been like a long career dealing
- 12:38Speaker 3: with this guy. But he took care of me, and
- 12:42Speaker 3: it was more so like the old school guys, they
- 12:45Speaker 3: was more so like communicating to you. Like, hey, son,
- 12:49Speaker 3: I know I messed up the call, but you're working.
- 12:52Speaker 3: Just take it, and it gets better. And over time,
- 12:55Speaker 3: you'll start getting things to go in your favor with
- 12:58Speaker 3: certain guys.
- 12:59Speaker 4: And I think.
- 13:01Speaker 3: The misconduct from these umpires now, what they did, I
- 13:06Speaker 3: think they should be held to the same standard that
- 13:08Speaker 3: the players are. Because when we say things, we get
- 13:12Speaker 3: kicked out of a game just on one word we say.
- 13:15Speaker 3: And so we have to defend that in our case
- 13:17Speaker 3: when we're up against our ruling.
- 13:20Speaker 2: How many years went by before you felt comfortable saying
- 13:23Speaker 2: something to Joe West?
- 13:25Speaker 4: Never.
- 13:29Speaker 7: No, no.
- 13:30Speaker 4: I say I got to about 10 years, and then
- 13:32Speaker 4: he kind of like.
- 13:34Speaker 3: We're having communications out there, even doing that bat. And
- 13:38Speaker 3: I felt like I can take a close pitch if
- 13:41Speaker 3: I knew it was a ball that he wouldn't ring
- 13:43Speaker 3: me up. So a lot of times you don't trust
- 13:46Speaker 3: certain umpires on certain calls because you don't want to
- 13:49Speaker 3: put it in their hands. But now with the challenging rule,
- 13:54Speaker 3: I guarantee you in my era, if Tony Gwynn or
- 13:59Speaker 3: It'll be guys hitting 400 nowadays with that box.
- 14:02Speaker 4: Yes. It'll be at 400.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Gwynn should be the one who determines whether it's a
- 14:06Speaker 1: strike or not.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Oh, he's hitting 400 if he had that.
- 14:22Speaker 6: Gary, some of my best memories growing up in New
- 14:24Speaker 6: York were just in the backyard or at a field
- 14:27Speaker 6: trying to emulate your batting stance. What's the origin of
- 14:31Speaker 6: how you came up with that batting stance?
- 14:33Speaker 1: Controlled chaos.
- 14:34Speaker 3: Actually, when I, you know, we didn't grow up using
- 14:38Speaker 3: wood bats. And when I got the rookie ball, I
- 14:43Speaker 3: used a wood bat for the first time, and I
- 14:45Speaker 3: hit a couple balls foul, home runs or whatever.
- 14:48Speaker 4: I just didn't want to get jammed.
- 14:49Speaker 3: So I was so quick on inside part of the
- 14:52Speaker 3: plate and I was hitting balls out the park. So
- 14:54Speaker 3: I got in BP the next day and I start
- 14:57Speaker 3: putting stick them on my bat and I start wiggling
- 15:00Speaker 3: like that just to get the field to make sure
- 15:01Speaker 3: it didn't slide.
- 15:02Speaker 4: And I was like, man, that felt natural.
- 15:05Speaker 3: And I went in BP and I hit 10 balls
- 15:07Speaker 3: out the right center in a row.
- 15:09Speaker 4: And I've never did that.
- 15:10Speaker 3: I never hit three balls out in a row and
- 15:13Speaker 3: I wound up hitting 10.
- 15:14Speaker 4: And I was like, OK, I'm taking that in the game.
- 15:17Speaker 4: And I took the same.
- 15:18Speaker 3: Approach and I went deep twice and I never stopped
- 15:21Speaker 3: doing it until I got to the big leagues when
- 15:24Speaker 3: my hitting coach, Sam Muser, wanted me to stop doing
- 15:27Speaker 3: it because he said that I wasn't strong enough to
- 15:30Speaker 3: do it. I said, well, I've been successful doing it
- 15:32Speaker 3: in the minor leagues. Why wouldn't I do it up here?
- 15:35Speaker 3: And so I struggled because I had to stop wiggling
- 15:37Speaker 3: the bat.
- 15:38Speaker 4: But I bet on myself and I went back to it.
- 15:41Speaker 4: And then that's when I had my success again.
- 15:43Speaker 1: How many hitting coaches in your career?
- 15:46Speaker 2: How many hitting coaches in your career are like, no,
- 15:50Speaker 2: you got to stop doing that?
- 15:51Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, I'll stop doing that.
- 15:52Speaker 4: Yeah, well, he was the only one, actually. He was
- 15:55Speaker 4: the only one.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Wow, right.
- 15:58Speaker 3: And Don Manley, I couldn't hit knuckleballs to save my
- 16:02Speaker 3: life with that style. So Don Manley told me, to
- 16:05Speaker 3: stop wiggling it so hard and just play it like
- 16:08Speaker 3: softball and swing up.
- 16:10Speaker 4: And ever since I.
- 16:11Speaker 3: Did that, I was, like, owning Tim Wakefield and all
- 16:13Speaker 3: those guys, knuckleballers.
- 16:16Speaker 1: I will get Mikey A.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Here to some Little League questions that he has for
- 16:19Speaker 2: you because Gary is watching his son play baseball. And
- 16:22Speaker 2: I'm wondering, you love it, right? Like, I know it's hard, right?
- 16:25Speaker 2: You want your son to do well. But watching him
- 16:28Speaker 2: is better than you playing yourself, correct?
- 16:30Speaker 4: Yes? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 16:32Speaker 3: My thing is that I always tell my kids, all right,
- 16:36Speaker 3: you already got generational wealth, so you don't have to
- 16:40Speaker 3: worry about nothing.
- 16:42Speaker 4: So you just go out there and play baseball.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Just go take some hacks.
- 16:45Speaker 5: Yes.
- 16:45Speaker 4: That's it. Just go out there.
- 16:47Speaker 3: And enjoy yourself. It ain't no pressure to do what
- 16:50Speaker 3: I did. I've already laid the path forward. you know,
- 16:52Speaker 3: for you. Um, but, but I want you to do
- 16:55Speaker 3: it your way, get it done your way. We're going
- 16:58Speaker 3: to all be educated. You get your degree. And if
- 17:01Speaker 3: baseball just so happened to be in your future, then
- 17:04Speaker 3: go out and play it. Otherwise we're not going to
- 17:06Speaker 3: let baseball dictate our relationship. We're not going to let
- 17:10Speaker 3: baseball dictate anything. We're going to play it as hard
- 17:13Speaker 3: as we can. And we're going to play it as
- 17:15Speaker 3: long as we can, but they're the same, the end
- 17:17Speaker 3: all be all.
- 17:18Speaker 2: You're far more mature than Mikey A is as it
- 17:21Speaker 2: relates to your kid, watching him play, giving him advice.
- 17:26Speaker 1: Mikey, go ahead. You have some questions.
- 17:27Speaker 2: Because, Gary, I'm telling you, his kid's playing Little League,
- 17:31Speaker 2: and he's a crazy man in the stands.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Go ahead, Mike.
- 17:35Speaker 5: First off, I'm a crazy man in the fans positively.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Positively crazy, yes.
- 17:40Speaker 5: Now, my question for you is my kid's like the
- 17:43Speaker 5: biggest and the strongest, but he's getting to a point
- 17:46Speaker 5: now where– everybody's kind of catching up. How do you
- 17:50Speaker 5: keep him from being one of the best hitters because
- 17:53Speaker 5: he's the biggest and the strongest to be one of
- 17:54Speaker 5: the best hitters because he's one of the best hitters?
- 17:58Speaker 3: Well, I'll say this to you. What it looked like
- 18:01Speaker 3: on Monday, it can change on Thursday.
- 18:04Speaker 4: Okay?
- 18:04Speaker 3: So I wasn't the biggest, fastest, strongest in anything, but
- 18:09Speaker 3: I was the best in all of it.
- 18:11Speaker 4: You see?
- 18:12Speaker 3: So that's how I look at it. Like, I had
- 18:15Speaker 3: guys that could hit a ball farther than me. I
- 18:17Speaker 3: had guys that could throw it harder than me. I
- 18:19Speaker 3: had guys that could run faster than me. I had
- 18:22Speaker 3: guys that was bigger than me. But the one thing
- 18:25Speaker 3: that you got to teach your son and always focus
- 18:29Speaker 3: on is know everything that you're supposed to be doing
- 18:32Speaker 3: and know what everybody else is doing. And when you
- 18:35Speaker 3: have that down, that means you're more prepared than everybody else.
- 18:38Speaker 3: And you're going to be that turtle going down the
- 18:40Speaker 3: road on a consistent speed.
- 18:42Speaker 4: And everybody else is going to have ups and downs
- 18:44Speaker 4: in their game. If you're the most consistent person and player,
- 18:48Speaker 4: you'll be the best player.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Let me try to broker a deal here. Mikey A.,
- 18:53Speaker 1: if you move to Tampa, perhaps Gary Sheffield will be
- 18:56Speaker 1: your son's hitting coach.
- 18:57Speaker 2: He doesn't want to manage, but hitting coach, that's not
- 19:00Speaker 2: nearly as.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Much time or responsibility. I got family in Tampa.
- 19:04Speaker 2: So, Gary, if I get in the move, because Lord
- 19:06Speaker 2: knows I want him to move down here, would you
- 19:08Speaker 2: spend some time with this kid?
- 19:09Speaker 1: I mean. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 19:11Speaker 4: We'll have him right.
- 19:13Speaker 1: I'll get to see that.
- 19:15Speaker 4: I'll go straight to his weaknesses and see how he
- 19:17Speaker 4: can overcome it.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Yes. Yes, and, Mike, he can take over the family diner.
- 19:21Speaker 1: I'll see you in December. Yes, sir. Yeah. Just sit
- 19:24Speaker 1: him on.
- 19:25Speaker 3: I'll make sure we clean up the weaknesses.
- 19:29Speaker 2: He's going to be a lot harder on your kid
- 19:31Speaker 2: than he will on his own kid.
- 19:33Speaker 7: Oh, yeah.
- 19:33Speaker 4: Oh, yeah. He likes it.
- 19:35Speaker 2: All right, Gary, we appreciate the time. Before we get
- 19:38Speaker 2: you out of here, we have a game around here
- 19:39Speaker 2: we like to play. It's called One Table. Taylor will
- 19:42Speaker 2: play the imaging and then we'll go from there.
- 19:45Speaker 4: Go ahead.
- 19:48Speaker 7: There's one table left at the hottest spot in town
- 19:51Speaker 7: and everybody wants it who's getting it and who's getting
- 19:56Speaker 7: left outside greatness gets seated everyone else waits This is
- 20:03Speaker 7: One Table.
- 20:04Speaker 2: All right, so we're in New York. It's Sheffield Steakhouse.
- 20:08Speaker 2: I'm not certain why that doesn't exist already. But Sheff
- 20:11Speaker 2: Steakhouse in New York. You are the guy who is
- 20:15Speaker 2: in charge. I mean, you own the restaurant, of course.
- 20:17Speaker 2: But you're the guy who's in charge of who gets
- 20:19Speaker 2: the table. And there's only one table remaining in that restaurant.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Taylor's going to give you two options.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Go ahead, Taylor.
- 20:25Speaker 6: So, Gary, Derek Jeter walks in. Jalen Brunson walks in.
- 20:30Speaker 6: Who gets the table?
- 20:35Speaker 3: Well, normally I would say Derek Jeter because he has
- 20:39Speaker 3: five championships, but the Knicks getting a championship is like
- 20:43Speaker 3: the equivalent of five.
- 20:44Speaker 7: Yes.
- 20:45Speaker 4: So Jalen Brunson.
- 20:46Speaker 1: Wow. Shocking. Oh, I guess not. Mikey, you have one?
- 20:52Speaker 4: Sure.
- 20:53Speaker 7: Bernie Williams walks in.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Jorge Posada walks in.
- 20:56Speaker 6: Wow.
- 21:01Speaker 3: Putting you in a bad spot.
- 21:05Speaker 1: There's only one table and there's only one seat at
- 21:07Speaker 1: the table, Gary.
- 21:08Speaker 4: Both of those guys are my guys. I love both
- 21:11Speaker 4: of them.
- 21:13Speaker 3: But Posada is a little mean, so I'll probably give
- 21:17Speaker 3: it to Posada.
- 21:19Speaker 1: He likes the meaner people. I love that. All right,
- 21:22Speaker 1: one more and we'll get you out of here. Go ahead, Taylor.
- 21:25Speaker 6: Aaron Judge walks in.
- 21:27Speaker 4: Yep.
- 21:28Speaker 6: Hideki Matsui walks in with the 2009 World Series MVP trophy.
- 21:32Speaker 4: Who gets the table, Gary? Matsui. Matsui. That's my guy.
- 21:40Speaker 4: That's my guy. Gary. I love you, Aaron, but Matsui.
- 21:44Speaker 1: You love this game, Gary. I can tell. You like
- 21:46Speaker 1: the game. It's a fun game.
- 21:47Speaker 4: I love it. I love it.
- 21:48Speaker 7: All right.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Let's get on that. Sheffield Steakhouse, New York City.
- 21:51Speaker 4: Yes, sir. Chef is cooking, baby. Yes.
- 21:55Speaker 2: Gary, enjoy the time with your son, watching your son,
- 21:58Speaker 2: with your wife, with your family.
- 22:00Speaker 1: It is great.
- 22:01Speaker 2: I've had the opportunity to do it with my daughter,
- 22:04Speaker 2: with my family. There's nothing like it. So enjoy it.
- 22:06Speaker 2: We always appreciate the time. I appreciate your.
- 22:07Speaker 1: Friendship, man.
- 22:09Speaker 4: Thank you, guys. I appreciate you guys for having me.
- 22:11Speaker 5: All right.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Thank you, Gary.
