- 0:29I'm Tammy's daughter and mom
- 0:30to a very energetic little dude called H.
- 0:33We're glad you're here.
- 0:35Let's get started.
- 0:36Hello, welcome back to the Guiding Mindset Podcast.
- 0:40So our last episode, we went over who we are.
- 0:43And this episode, we're going to dive into
- 0:45just what is the guiding mindset,
- 0:47so that you have the framework.
- 0:48So mom, what's the guiding mindset?
- 0:51The guiding mindset is how we think about parenting.
- 0:54There are seven interconnected principles
- 0:56that provide the framework and the tools
- 0:57so that we can better understand our kids
- 0:59and how to best nurture and guide them.
- 1:01There's a lot of parent advice out there.
- 1:04And most of it tends to be something like,
- 1:06if your child does A, then you do B,
- 1:08then it will all happily result in C.
- 1:11Well, that might work some of the time,
- 1:13but it doesn't work for every situation or child.
- 1:16Kids are unique little individuals, and so are parents.
- 1:19So situations vary.
- 1:21And what's right for one child or one family
- 1:23may not be right for another.
- 1:25There just isn't a quick fix or a one-size-fits-all answer.
- 1:29So with the guiding mindset and the seven principles,
- 1:31whatever the situation, whatever the age or stage,
- 1:34we're going to be able to respond intentionally
- 1:36in that moment, but also in a manner
- 1:38that supports our kids' development
- 1:40and the unfolding of the potential
- 1:41and their becoming just who they're meant to be.
- 1:45That's awesome, mom.
- 1:46So what's our first principle?
- 1:48It starts with you.
- 1:50You mean it starts with me?
- 1:51Yeah, well, we all want to go and default
- 1:56right to figuring out our kids,
- 1:58but we really have to consider ourselves first,
- 2:00do a little inner work, looking within.
- 2:03So to do that, we need to consider
- 2:05what do we want to bring to parenting
- 2:07in any given situation?
- 2:09The kids are learning from and responding
- 2:10to the world around them, and that includes us.
- 2:13We are like the biggest influence.
- 2:16So we need to take the time to know
- 2:18what we bring as parents from our own upbringing
- 2:20and what kind of parent do we want to be?
- 2:24Ask questions like, how was I parented?
- 2:26What do I want to keep?
- 2:27What do I want to do differently?
- 2:29But however we were parented, the world's changed
- 2:32and it keeps changing, so we need to be able
- 2:34to parent in a way that supports our kids
- 2:36to be able to succeed in the world
- 2:38that they're going to find themselves as adults.
- 2:40We also need to consider what are my buttons?
- 2:44We've all got those, those things that irk us
- 2:46that our kids do that cause us to react
- 2:49less than in a positive way.
- 2:52So by just being aware of that,
- 2:54we can then respond more calmly
- 2:58rather than let it really get us.
- 3:01And then in any given moment,
- 3:02particularly when those buttons get pushed,
- 3:05what's going on for me that might be preventing
- 3:07my reacting calmly?
- 3:09Like, was I busy and I forgot to eat lunch again
- 3:11so I'm reacting because I'm a bit hangry?
- 3:15So how more specifically does this help
- 3:17with our interactions with our kids?
- 3:20Well, it allows you to parent with intention
- 3:22so that you move from parenting unconsciously
- 3:25and reactively to having an awareness
- 3:28and understanding yourself,
- 3:30knowing who you want to be as a parent,
- 3:31and then what matters most to you for your child
- 3:34so that then you can make conscious
- 3:36and intentional choices and decisions
- 3:37and how you are with them.
- 3:40So there's a question that we can ask
- 3:42for each of these principles.
- 3:44So for this first one, our question is,
- 3:46what part of this situation belongs to me?
- 3:50That's great.
- 3:51What's our next one?
- 3:53Appreciate the miracle.
- 3:55Now, it really is quite miraculous.
- 3:58Children come into the world with everything within them
- 4:01to become who they're meant to be.
- 4:03They have this inner drive or essence
- 4:05that guides their growth and their development.
- 4:07And it's up to the nurture then from the environment
- 4:10for that to evolve and to become.
- 4:13This is their potential that we talk about.
- 4:17So an example of this,
- 4:18we see this in a lot of ways in development,
- 4:21but brain development is a great example.
- 4:23Kids come in with all the neurons
- 4:25that they need ready to go,
- 4:27but it's the interactions and the experiences
- 4:29that create the synapses that literally build their brains.
- 4:33So another example is learning to walk and talk.
- 4:37In just a short time,
- 4:39they do that without any real instruction.
- 4:41We just are there supporting and guiding them.
- 4:44Kids are wired with this innate drive
- 4:46for the experiences that they need for their development.
- 4:49So we need to appreciate how miraculous that is
- 4:51and work with that inner essence.
- 4:54So how do we actually do that?
- 4:56By really knowing and appreciating
- 4:58who this unique little person in front of you is.
- 5:01Now, what is their temperament?
- 5:02What are their interests?
- 5:04What are they driven toward at any given time?
- 5:06What are their own little quirks
- 5:08or particular little needs?
- 5:09So by connecting and observing,
- 5:12we can just get to know who is this little person.
- 5:15And then as Montessori would say, follow the child.
- 5:19It sounds like it can lead to less struggle,
- 5:22a shift from trying to mold a child
- 5:24into a specific version of what we think they should be
- 5:28into seeing them with maybe our curiosity
- 5:32and discovering and supporting who they really are
- 5:35and their inner essence and potential.
- 5:38Absolutely, that's exactly right.
- 5:40So for this particular principle,
- 5:44appreciate the miracle we're asking,
- 5:46how am I staying true to who my child is?
- 5:50That's great.
- 5:51What's our next one?
- 5:52Nurture connection.
- 5:54This really is the foundation for everything else.
- 5:57It's through relationship that we support our kids.
- 6:00It's through relationship that we guide and teach.
- 6:03And it's through relationship that we have influence.
- 6:05Their development, their learning, their behavior,
- 6:08their mental health and their future relationships
- 6:10are all shaped by our connection.
- 6:13How we communicate also has such an impact on this
- 6:17and it can make or break our connection.
- 6:19It's all about how we listen and respond
- 6:21and work through feelings together
- 6:23so that everyone feels heard and understood,
- 6:26accepted and respected.
- 6:28There's a saying, connection before correction.
- 6:30We all have difficult moments,
- 6:32but we definitely need to be sure we connect first.
- 6:36So if I am super connected,
- 6:38does that mean I automatically have a child
- 6:40that's gonna do what I tell them?
- 6:42Yeah, if only.
- 6:44But with connection,
- 6:45we are more likely to invite cooperation.
- 6:48So we get a lot closer to getting there
- 6:50and having them work with us and things go smoothly
- 6:53than if we end up in a power struggle.
- 6:56But it also sounds like in creating this connected culture
- 7:00that it extends beyond just a parent-child relationship,
- 7:03but really can foster a whole family culture.
- 7:07Definitely.
- 7:08We want to be teaching our children
- 7:10that everyone in the family needs to be loved and cared for,
- 7:13that we're all in it together.
- 7:14When our family relationships are strong,
- 7:17the whole family functions better.
- 7:19And we just set up this idea
- 7:21that we all take care of each other.
- 7:23So the question that we ask for this principle is,
- 7:26how can I strengthen our connection?
- 7:30I love that.
- 7:31What's next?
- 7:32Guide the whole child.
- 7:35Development is holistic.
- 7:37We often have this tendency to pay particular attention
- 7:40to our kids' physical development.
- 7:42We make sure they're fed and watered.
- 7:44And we're paying attention to their cognitive development
- 7:48that they're learning.
- 7:49But really the body, the brain, and the heart,
- 7:51they're all interconnected.
- 7:52And they're all very important to the whole.
- 7:55The physical, the social, the emotional,
- 7:56the cognitive, language, spiritual,
- 7:58all of these come into play
- 8:00and are interconnected and work together.
- 8:02And we need all of them to really understand
- 8:05how our children best learn and develop.
- 8:08By understanding our kids' development,
- 8:11then it also helps us to better understand them.
- 8:14Why do they do the things they do?
- 8:17And why don't they always do
- 8:18what we think they should be able to do?
- 8:21For instance, temper tantrums.
- 8:22For a two-year-old, it's to be expected developmentally.
- 8:26As much as we might like to be able
- 8:27to teach or train it out of them,
- 8:30it's a developmental part of being two.
- 8:33And so having that understanding
- 8:35helps us to ease our frustration,
- 8:37have a little bit more empathy and compassion
- 8:38for this little person that is,
- 8:41just can't hold all these big emotions.
- 8:43We can adjust our expectations
- 8:45and then we can respond with guidance and support
- 8:48that they need in that moment.
- 8:51Is there a way that we know
- 8:53what's developmentally appropriate?
- 8:54Well, it takes us back to the principle
- 8:58to appreciate the miracle, knowing your child,
- 9:01as well as nurturing connection.
- 9:03When we connect and we observe,
- 9:05they really do show us who they are and what they mean.
- 9:09And there's lots of resources that can help us
- 9:11be more aware of those developmental milestones and such.
- 9:14You can check out our website for resources.
- 9:16And there's also gonna soon be a book you can purchase,
- 9:19The Guiding Parent.
- 9:20Also, this is exactly the kind of thing
- 9:23we'll be talking about today.
- 9:24Throughout our different episodes on our podcast.
- 9:28The newsletter is also on our website
- 9:30and you can subscribe.
- 9:32Absolutely.
- 9:34So there's lots of ways that you can find out more
- 9:36about how to utilize these principles.
- 9:39So a question for guiding the whole child is,
- 9:43what's happening developmentally?
- 9:44What needs or learning is needed?
- 9:48All right, next.
- 9:50The next principle is feed the spirit.
- 9:53This is all about connecting with our child's
- 9:56and our own wonder, curiosity.
- 9:58And that's something that's beyond ourselves
- 10:00to nurture that natural sense of awe and discovery
- 10:03and our search for meaning and purpose.
- 10:05All of our human inventions and progress
- 10:08really comes from here.
- 10:09Our imagination and our creativity.
- 10:12It's also about supporting our kids
- 10:15in developing a strong sense of self
- 10:17and connection to their own inner guidance
- 10:19to be able to know who they are
- 10:20and feel good about who they are.
- 10:22That they have a nice strong self-worth.
- 10:25This is part of their developing values and character
- 10:28and being able to hear that inner voice
- 10:30that helps them to know what feels right and true for them.
- 10:33It includes things like kindness and empathy,
- 10:36having gratitude, as well as experiencing beauty
- 10:39and joy and music, you know, appreciation for the arts.
- 10:42All those little things that make life meaningful
- 10:44and much more worthwhile.
- 10:46It sounds almost spiritual.
- 10:49It really is.
- 10:50We often tend to overlook that spiritual aspect
- 10:52that's such a big part of who we are as humans.
- 10:56You know, it's those mountaintop experiences.
- 10:58It's watching a sunset,
- 10:59stopping to watch a ladybug crawl up a leaf.
- 11:02Those moments of just awe and wonder.
- 11:04It's enjoying and appreciating all that's around us
- 11:07as well as having an awareness of that inner part of us
- 11:11and having our inner knowing and guidance.
- 11:14Makes me think of our experiences in my family
- 11:16of raising monarch caterpillars into butterflies.
- 11:19That's always so cool to see that whole progression
- 11:22from caterpillar to butterfly.
- 11:25I always love doing that with kids.
- 11:28So the question for Feed the Spirit is,
- 11:30does this nourish and protect my child's spirit?
- 11:34What comes next?
- 11:36Preparing with purpose.
- 11:38This principle really helps us to be proactive
- 11:41rather than reactive.
- 11:43By planning ahead, and that includes us,
- 11:46we can prevent so many struggles
- 11:48and save a lot of time and really save our sanity.
- 11:52Rather than reacting, we can anticipate and prepare
- 11:55so that then we can respond a lot more calmly
- 11:58and intentionally.
- 11:59So there's really two parts to this.
- 12:01So we're preparing our child's little world,
- 12:04their environment, our home environments.
- 12:06So we create opportunities for learning and development,
- 12:10things that support their budding independence and autonomy.
- 12:13But it also means creating those routines
- 12:15and those schedules that help everyday life
- 12:18run more smoothly and make sure
- 12:19that we're meeting needs along the way.
- 12:22Then the second part of that is that we're preparing
- 12:24our kids for those everyday life and changes that happen.
- 12:28So helping them know what to expect
- 12:30when things are going to be different,
- 12:31to move through transitions more smoothly,
- 12:34to deal with changes in routines, new experiences,
- 12:38major life events, whatever happens to come our way.
- 12:41So preparing for things from a quick trip
- 12:44to the grocery store with less incidents along the way
- 12:47to maybe an unexpected late bedtime,
- 12:50to grandparents visiting,
- 12:52or maybe even a major move across the country.
- 12:55It's definitely easier to prepare
- 12:57than to try and pick up the pieces.
- 12:59I know my family definitely has a lot of experience
- 13:02with this.
- 13:03Yes, especially the visiting grandparents
- 13:05and moves across the country.
- 13:09So the question for preparing with purpose is quite simply,
- 13:13what preparation is needed?
- 13:15So this leads us to our final principle,
- 13:18which is behavior is communication.
- 13:22This is the principle we all want to start with,
- 13:24but really we need to understand the other principles
- 13:27in order to best decipher the language of behavior
- 13:29and understand what it's communicating.
- 13:32So instead of seeing our child
- 13:33and their behavior is the problem,
- 13:35we look beneath it to understand what's driving it.
- 13:38We can connect, get curious,
- 13:40and then use the principles to understand what's needed
- 13:42and how we should best respond.
- 13:45Difficult behavior really is just mistaken behavior
- 13:48and it's communicating an unmet need.
- 13:51When we come at it with this mindset,
- 13:53it allows us to respond with connection and guidance
- 13:56rather than control and punishment.
- 13:58I love the saying,
- 13:59my child isn't giving me a hard time,
- 14:01they're having a hard time.
- 14:02And so it's up to us to figure out what's going on for them.
- 14:06So our question for behavior is communication is,
- 14:10what is this behavior telling me?
- 14:12I know for me,
- 14:13these principles have really given me so much confidence
- 14:16in knowing what to do
- 14:18and handling any kind of a scenario that comes about.
- 14:22I know that I'm parenting my child in a way
- 14:24that helps them become the fullest version of themselves.
- 14:28And our world is changing so rapidly
- 14:30and I feel like as a guiding parent,
- 14:32I can set up a life that helps my kid thrive
- 14:35in that ever-changing world.
- 14:39Absolutely.
- 14:40And along with that,
- 14:41what's really important to me
- 14:42is that when we change how we nurture and guide our children,
- 14:47we change what becomes possible for them,
- 14:49for ourselves and ultimately for our world.
- 14:52So now everyone has had a quick overview of the principles
- 14:56and we're excited to dive deeper
- 14:58into just a whole variety of parenting situations
- 15:01where we can apply these.
- 15:02We've given you kind of the tip of the iceberg
- 15:04of the principles.
