- 0:00SPEAKER_02: I didn't know if you were gonna wear this.
- 0:01SPEAKER_02: I'm wearing my B transformed shirt.
- 0:03SPEAKER_02: Oh that's good.
- 0:04SPEAKER_02: I'm not sure it's very intentional.
- 0:07SPEAKER_02: Intentionally does not fit well.
- 0:08SPEAKER_02: That's good.
- 0:09SPEAKER_02: You you're themed.
- 0:11SPEAKER_02: I am themed.
- 0:12SPEAKER_02: I really wanted to hit it all.
- 0:13SPEAKER_02: And I was wondering this morning, is he gonna wear his?
- 0:16SPEAKER_02: Because we have a lot of the same t-shirts.
- 0:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, most of them.
- 0:20SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 0:21SPEAKER_02: Church attire.
- 0:22SPEAKER_02: I was like, should I text him and be like, hey man?
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: Don't or do?
- 0:26SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 0:26SPEAKER_02: But I just decided to roll the dice and you know, you don't have to.
- 0:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that one does not fit me right.
- 0:32SPEAKER_04: The collar's too big, the chest is too small, the belly is too big.
- 0:36SPEAKER_04: And I know it's the shirt.
- 0:37SPEAKER_02: It yes.
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: It's clearly these shirts just totally trend.
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: They transform themselves to make me look like I'm not doing anything about it.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: It's not you, it's the shirt.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: Well, obviously, I'm wearing this because this week is transformation week.
- 0:53SPEAKER_02: Transformation week.
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: How do we feel?
- 0:55SPEAKER_04: Are we excited?
- 0:56SPEAKER_04: We're excited.
- 0:56SPEAKER_04: We're excited.
- 0:57SPEAKER_04: I'm man, I'm ready.
- 0:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 0:59SPEAKER_04: I don't know what we're I don't know what you're pointing towards, but I'm excited.
- 1:02SPEAKER_04: That's it.
- 1:03SPEAKER_04: I'm just getting this kicked off.
- 1:04SPEAKER_04: We survived the welcome home flood of 2026.
- 1:08SPEAKER_04: That was awesome.
- 1:08SPEAKER_04: Wasn't that awesome?
- 1:09SPEAKER_04: It was.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: Amazing job, our our team here.
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: Uh there was a plan B for having everything inside.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: Most of everything was planned to be inside.
- 1:20SPEAKER_04: We got a tent in case it rained.
- 1:22SPEAKER_04: We did not get a tent in case of 40 mile an hour winds and lightning storm.
- 1:26SPEAKER_04: So it like it rained, but it it really kind of did rain.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: It came down, but we had a dunk tank inside.
- 1:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: How cool is that?
- 1:35SPEAKER_04: It it was cool until like towards the end of the night, they came and they said, Hey, I s and I, here's my direct quote.
- 1:42SPEAKER_04: There will be violence if you try to put me in that dunk tank.
- 1:46SPEAKER_04: And I and I I'm always for my entire ministry career, I've done all the things.
- 1:50SPEAKER_04: Uh-huh.
- 1:51SPEAKER_04: I just wasn't doing it.
- 1:52SPEAKER_04: I'm not a guy that's gonna probably crawl into water after everybody else has.
- 1:56SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 1:56SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 1:56SPEAKER_04: I don't just I would you have gone first?
- 2:00SPEAKER_04: If I was prepared and I had my stuff, I probably would have.
- 2:03SPEAKER_04: Probably would have.
- 2:04SPEAKER_04: I'll do anything.
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: Well, I saw you working your table pretty good.
- 2:07SPEAKER_02: You were out there fingers, people were coming by.
- 2:11SPEAKER_04: Got like 35 people in our in um in our Bible study.
- 2:14SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 2:14SPEAKER_04: What could possibly go wrong?
- 2:16SPEAKER_04: It's turned into a church service.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be all some churches aren't even 35 deep.
- 2:20SPEAKER_04: Well, that's okay.
- 2:22SPEAKER_04: They're doing their thing, man.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, an amazing time though.
- 2:26SPEAKER_02: Kyle, I think, probably drank half that tank as much as he was dunked under the water.
- 2:32SPEAKER_02: And he's got so much hair every time he came.
- 2:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they're still just drinking that thing.
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh.
- 2:37SPEAKER_02: Hair and water everywhere.
- 2:39SPEAKER_02: He's doing so good in youth.
- 2:40SPEAKER_04: We're out of that kid.
- 2:42SPEAKER_02: That seven-year-old kid.
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we love Kyle.
- 2:45SPEAKER_02: Good job, man.
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, so it was great.
- 2:47SPEAKER_02: It was a great time.
- 2:49SPEAKER_02: We had we served 500 meals.
- 2:51SPEAKER_02: Gave away a lot of t-shirts.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: We didn't.
- 2:53SPEAKER_02: The food trucks served five meals.
- 2:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, we did not.
- 2:55SPEAKER_04: That's right.
- 2:55SPEAKER_04: The the food trucks was a great idea.
- 2:57SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was awesome.
- 2:58SPEAKER_02: So thanks to all who came out.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: And if you weren't able to, you know, you can check us out online still.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: There's still um classes, classes available, ways to serve, all those things, find a place to connect.
- 3:10SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 3:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's what this series is about, this season is about, and hopefully what we're always about, trying to help you get that connection to Jesus, and then from the outflow of that, then how we serve, how we group, how we gather, how we give.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: Um, so it's awesome.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: It all connects.
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: Agreed.
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: What are any takeaways from last week or maybe the series as we look to wrap it up this week?
- 3:36SPEAKER_04: So, for those who are just logging in and you have no context of where we're at, we're in a series called Welcome Home, going through the values of community live church.
- 3:42SPEAKER_04: We value people, we value um connection, we value a practical faith.
- 3:48SPEAKER_04: And uh today we're gonna talk about the fourth part, which is we value transformation.
- 3:52SPEAKER_04: So last week in practical faith, just so much fun to teach.
- 3:56SPEAKER_04: Wasn't super deep scripture, but I love the fact that you can see the practical nature of how Jesus taught, the things that he said, how it builds on the different.
- 4:05SPEAKER_04: I got a lot of emails, a lot of feedback.
- 4:07SPEAKER_04: There it's it's probably what if uh people that have been a part of community life church for a while, it's one of the things that they say drew them and kept them here is just how we hold scripture.
- 4:19SPEAKER_04: So um, this podcast is an example of that because we sometimes feel like there's not enough time on Sunday morning, we get a chance to spill it out.
- 4:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 4:26SPEAKER_04: So I think holding scripture in a way that that honors the text and honors the God that gave us this text is cool.
- 4:32SPEAKER_04: So I don't know if there's anything that jumps out in particular.
- 4:35SPEAKER_04: Just but I know that today's a challenge.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:38SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 4:38SPEAKER_02: Well, and this scripture changes a little bit to um so transformation.
- 4:44SPEAKER_02: Before we get into the actual scripture, and then we'll let that inform the conversation and some of the thoughts from there.
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: But how would you define transformation in the context we're looking at?
- 4:55SPEAKER_04: I I I think I think now after reading this scripture, I actually have a t a a word.
- 4:59SPEAKER_04: I don't know what I how what I would have said yesterday, but Peter calls it participating in the divine nature.
- 5:05SPEAKER_04: So it is it is the switching of our lives being centrally focused on our flesh and ourselves, now participating in this uh shifting or transforming of our lives to be in the image of God, not not just so that we can be cool, not just so that we can experience all the things, but because I believe this is the design and the plan, that in that process we reveal God.
- 5:29SPEAKER_04: Sometimes we still look at this through the selfish lens of, what am I getting out of this by doing this?
- 5:34SPEAKER_04: This is the you get you get the promises, but it's those promises and it's what God has done that then allows the transformation, which is the work.
- 5:42SPEAKER_04: And it's in that work that we show up in this world in a way to reveal God and and allow others to see.
- 5:50SPEAKER_04: So I think that's how I would say it.
- 5:52SPEAKER_04: It's the work that we do by the by the power and the grace that God has given us to participate in the divine nature of God.
- 6:01SPEAKER_04: So not the divine nature of ourselves.
- 6:03SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 6:04SPEAKER_02: Because that would not go well.
- 6:06SPEAKER_04: Oh, what would you say?
- 6:07SPEAKER_04: God and Abad, that's what you said last week.
- 6:08SPEAKER_04: I had to bring it into a second podcast because it still creeps me out.
- 6:12SPEAKER_02: I did say that.
- 6:13SPEAKER_04: You did say that.
- 6:14SPEAKER_02: Guilty.
- 6:16SPEAKER_02: Um okay, cool.
- 6:17SPEAKER_02: So what made you land on 2 Peter?
- 6:20SPEAKER_04: Um, interesting.
- 6:22SPEAKER_04: I was in my Bible study last week, and they were struggling between the difference of practical faith and transformation.
- 6:29SPEAKER_04: Like they were blending those two things together.
- 6:31SPEAKER_04: And there's similarities.
- 6:32SPEAKER_04: I think practical faith, the knowledge, leads to, and you're gonna hear the word knowledge in here, leads to the transformation or it's a part of the transformation.
- 6:40SPEAKER_04: So one is the understanding, and one is the actual sauce.
- 6:44SPEAKER_04: I don't know, I don't know what you'd call it.
- 6:45SPEAKER_04: The the process is probably the best way.
- 6:48SPEAKER_04: Um so Robin in our Bible study, he said, What about this verse?
- 6:52SPEAKER_04: Because when I think transformation, I always think fruit of the spirit.
- 6:55SPEAKER_04: But if you go and you read Paul, he writes completely different, sometimes easier to understand because he's writing to a church and he's addressing the challenges that are there.
- 7:04SPEAKER_04: So the way that's right into Galatians, he's actually writing to a group of people.
- 7:08SPEAKER_04: Um so he writes about that as a comparison to from the not fruit of the spirit to the fruit of the spirit, so it's a little bit more juxtaposition, easier to see.
- 7:19SPEAKER_04: Peter writes, uh, um, and this this gets to a point you and I were talking about just a a little while ago about authorship.
- 7:26SPEAKER_04: But Peter writes um is a simple fisherman that writes a very complex um I don't know what you'd call it.
- 7:37SPEAKER_04: It's not a sermon.
- 7:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 7:38SPEAKER_04: It's a it's a treatise.
- 7:39SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 7:40SPEAKER_04: It's a uh it's it's deep.
- 7:42SPEAKER_02: It is, it's like this understanding of the uh the evils of not only our nature, but also maybe the world around us.
- 7:52SPEAKER_02: It it is a deep look at ourselves through the eyes of uh what God has already done.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: It's interesting because it's uh he starts with the end in mind.
- 8:03SPEAKER_02: That's good.
- 8:04SPEAKER_02: And we had that conversation.
- 8:06SPEAKER_02: Good.
- 8:06SPEAKER_02: It's an interesting way to look, but I do think the lens of faith has to be understood that way, otherwise it won't make a lot of sense, or you'll think you're the one doing the thing.
- 8:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:16SPEAKER_02: Even though he's saying, Hey, this is true.
- 8:19SPEAKER_02: This is already done.
- 8:20SPEAKER_02: God has given you this great insight.
- 8:24SPEAKER_02: And then it's okay, so now in light of that, here's how you should live.
- 8:29SPEAKER_04: Here's how you show up.
- 8:30SPEAKER_02: It's a very interesting, different way of thinking because we are maybe even with your kids, I'm thinking of times like, hey, if you do this, this, and this, like Friday, we'll go get you ice cream, or you know, it's always it's incentive-based.
- 8:43SPEAKER_02: You know, work can be the same way.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: You hit these things and you get a bonus.
- 8:47SPEAKER_02: You know what?
- 8:49SPEAKER_04: That'd be fun to preach.
- 8:50SPEAKER_04: But uh uh, that's all right.
- 8:51SPEAKER_04: You can do that from that seat there.
- 8:52SPEAKER_04: That's fine.
- 8:53SPEAKER_04: I do that on stage.
- 8:54SPEAKER_04: It's gonna be a mess.
- 8:55SPEAKER_04: There are gonna be people trying to get all kind of stuff.
- 8:57SPEAKER_02: Well, I'm saying that's what we're used to.
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: That's that's the very okay.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: I gotcha.
- 9:02SPEAKER_02: I'm saying that's what we're used to, but that's not it.
- 9:04SPEAKER_04: Okay, I thought you were saying that's what this was.
- 9:06SPEAKER_04: I'm like, oh man, that's a whole different trip.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: I'm saying that's sorry.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: The complete opposite of what this is.
- 9:10SPEAKER_02: He's already starting with the end, saying, You've already gotten the prize.
- 9:14SPEAKER_02: Like, this is the thing.
- 9:15SPEAKER_02: And so now then what does your life look like?
- 9:17SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 9:17SPEAKER_04: My dad is who's in the last that Bible study I was in, he was talking about the idea of perfection.
- 9:21SPEAKER_04: That there is that perfection that he's holding a standard to.
- 9:24SPEAKER_04: He's like, you wouldn't want him to hold a standard to something that was less than perfection.
- 9:26SPEAKER_04: So he's he's letting you know here's the perfection, and now we're growing to that, which the church word for that is sanctification.
- 9:31SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 9:32SPEAKER_04: So uh yes, I I a hundred percent concur with you.
- 9:36SPEAKER_02: So it's interesting, but yeah, Peter's I you could study that.
- 9:39SPEAKER_02: I don't know how much we'll get into, probably not much today.
- 9:42SPEAKER_02: And I don't know, on Sunday.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: I mean, there's some debate on on the authorship of the letter.
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: It's a little bit different from 1 Peter.
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: This writer does identify himself as Peter, says, Hey, I was at the transfiguration, which we know Peter was at.
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: So, you know, you could probably that's one of those hundred percent maybe things we could kick around with.
- 9:59SPEAKER_04: And also, I mean, nobody was there were there were people that were there, but they're long gone, right?
- 10:03SPEAKER_04: So as we look back into these things, we got a pretty narrow focus for where it's at.
- 10:06SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm glad that they assume that it's Peter.
- 10:09SPEAKER_04: Uh, I I think there's no question that the scholarship of this included Peter.
- 10:14SPEAKER_04: Uh, we know that both Peter and Paul were in prison in Rome around this time, that Silas was there, so probably bouncing back and forth.
- 10:21SPEAKER_04: So the theology was working out.
- 10:23SPEAKER_04: Uh, this also believed that 2 Peter was to combat the way that Paul's theology was being misused.
- 10:29SPEAKER_04: Oh, there's grace.
- 10:30SPEAKER_04: I can do whatever I want.
- 10:31SPEAKER_04: So Peter draws just as his as his character is in the Gospels, uh-uh.
- 10:36SPEAKER_04: Like he just champs up and says, No, we're not doing that.
- 10:39SPEAKER_04: Let me teach you the way that you're supposed to do.
- 10:41SPEAKER_04: So the heart of the letter feels the same, although maybe the Greek is more rich.
- 10:45SPEAKER_04: You wouldn't think that a common fisherman from Galilee would write in the way that we're going to study it.
- 10:50SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 10:50SPEAKER_04: But there's there's all sorts of ways to kind of navigate around it, and it is in keeping with the theology that they would have held.
- 10:56SPEAKER_04: So Maybe Peter learned a few things from Paul.
- 10:59SPEAKER_04: Maybe Peter learned a few things from Paul.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: Well, even just think about Peter, the apostle, the disciple of Christ, and the transformation in his life.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: Does that him being the source of that, does that connect with you in any way just when you're thinking transformation?
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: Like the the path that this guy went on?
- 11:17SPEAKER_02: And Peter?
- 11:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 11:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 11:18SPEAKER_04: I mean, well, the fact that in verse one he lists both names.
- 11:21SPEAKER_04: I think that's very important.
- 11:23SPEAKER_04: Uh Robin in the Bible study.
- 11:25SPEAKER_04: He he made us read the first verse of 1 Peter and the first verse of 2 Peter.
- 11:28SPEAKER_04: And the first one, he's like, Peter, apostle.
- 11:32SPEAKER_04: Second one, he's quick to say, Simon Peter, a servant and apostle.
- 11:35SPEAKER_04: So it brings both natures in there.
- 11:37SPEAKER_04: So I I that man, that is so key in this, he's approaching this topic in a different way.
- 11:43SPEAKER_04: And then he gives you the the growth pattern uh for how to how to live into it.
- 11:49SPEAKER_04: So he's not starting, and to not to refute what you said, he's not starting from here, here I am apostle.
- 11:54SPEAKER_04: I think he's holding both of those intention.
- 11:57SPEAKER_04: So the conversation that we had, and I'm jumping ahead, but the conversation we had today, he has a he has a line on it.
- 12:01SPEAKER_04: He says, if you do these things in increasing measure, you'll never stumble.
- 12:04SPEAKER_04: And man, it's just a fury of conversation about what do you mean never stumble?
- 12:07SPEAKER_04: Never gonna stumble, never gonna stumble.
- 12:09SPEAKER_04: You're jumping all the way to the end.
- 12:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but but like I think in this, you have to hold this whole thing as written because we do stumble.
- 12:18SPEAKER_04: So, so just in theory, in and of itself, it's written because there is a stumbling nature.
- 12:25SPEAKER_04: So for him to say do this and you'll never stumble, I I think is probably the ownership that we have stumbled and that we will stumble.
- 12:32SPEAKER_04: But yeah, hard to say that.
- 12:33SPEAKER_04: I we'd like to just man, we like to see a word in a sentence and write it down and put it on the wall, then we go, that's just not been bearing out.
- 12:39SPEAKER_04: It's not what he intended to say.
- 12:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: And it could be so NLT translates that as never fall away.
- 12:44SPEAKER_04: So there could be the ultimate loss of faith.
- 12:48SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 12:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:49SPEAKER_02: So it's it's without having him right in front of you asking, hey, what did you mean by that exactly?
- 12:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:54SPEAKER_02: Um, there is some speculation as to what exactly he's talking about.
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: But yeah, let's jump into it.
- 13:00SPEAKER_02: Um, I think even in verse one, the first thing that stuck out to me is the way he describes faith as precious faith, and it was given to us because of Jesus.
- 13:10SPEAKER_02: So even something as as dear as that, and I wonder how we hold and even think about faith as, oh, this is just part of my life.
- 13:19SPEAKER_02: It's just something I either have or don't have.
- 13:22SPEAKER_02: Some days it's strong, some days it's a little weaker.
- 13:24SPEAKER_02: But even understanding that faith, any faith, any measure of faith we have is truly a gift, a precious gift given to us.
- 13:32SPEAKER_02: Pretty cool thought.
- 13:33SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 13:33SPEAKER_04: So you're translating that as Jeff here in 2026.
- 13:37SPEAKER_04: Imagine if you're sitting in Rome on trial, wait awaiting death.
- 13:41SPEAKER_04: So for him to write it that way, there's a heaviness to it, or a weightiness, that's probably a better way to say it, that that um he was looking at that precious nature of faith as being something that he would carry all the way to the end.
- 13:54SPEAKER_04: We're looking for a a warm thought on how we can improve our relationship with our spouse or whatever.
- 14:00SPEAKER_04: And I and I think that's important.
- 14:01SPEAKER_04: I'm not trying to take away from that.
- 14:02SPEAKER_04: This guy was looking at it as the ultimate reason that he'd be willing to to allow himself to die strong, precious in a way that's not that cat is precious, precious in terms of something that just means the world to you.
- 14:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 14:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 14:19SPEAKER_04: So I so I I yeah, every sentence you can read and stop and just just write and think and process each one of these is so rich.
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 14:33SPEAKER_04: Now I I will tell you, and I'm not, well, I'm not, this is not about the authorship.
- 14:37SPEAKER_04: Go back and think about his sermon he preached on the day of Pentecost.
- 14:40SPEAKER_04: Everything he said had that weight of meaning, right?
- 14:42SPEAKER_04: Like there was always a each thought, each sentence had led to the next sentence and built upon itself.
- 14:49SPEAKER_04: And so in that same piece, Peter kind of does that here too.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:54SPEAKER_02: So we talked about this already a little bit.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: He starts with the end, but in verse 3, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life.
- 15:03SPEAKER_02: Um so living into something already given versus saying, Hey, here's the target, good luck.
- 15:11SPEAKER_02: This is a different, different situation.
- 15:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, I I would say read the next few words.
- 15:17SPEAKER_04: So he's given us everything needed for life and godliness through the knowledge of him who c so to me, the knowledge of Jesus gives us everything that we need for life and godliness.
- 15:28SPEAKER_04: So, what is the knowledge of Jesus?
- 15:29SPEAKER_04: That's the effort of going back in and understanding uh the the plan, not just the plan of salvation, the things he taught all about his life.
- 15:36SPEAKER_04: So when we say connecting people to Jesus, it's it's discovering that's a good way to look at it, discovering those things that he has given us for life and godliness.
- 15:45SPEAKER_04: That's a lot in that one sentence.
- 15:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 15:47SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 15:48SPEAKER_04: I mean, uh, but what he's saying, I think to your point, is he's given you everything that you need.
- 15:53SPEAKER_04: You you might need to go figure out what that is.
- 15:55SPEAKER_04: You don't even know what you need.
- 15:56SPEAKER_04: You don't know until you know.
- 15:57SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 15:57SPEAKER_04: Or you don't know what you don't know.
- 16:00SPEAKER_02: Is it hard for you to live like you have everything or feel like you have everything?
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: Or is that a is that a place you naturally start from?
- 16:12SPEAKER_04: Whoa, that's a great question.
- 16:13SPEAKER_04: I don't know that I've ever considered that I have everything.
- 16:17SPEAKER_04: Um I I I would say that I I believe I have faith, and so eternity is is a is now.
- 16:23SPEAKER_04: So in my mind I live that way.
- 16:25SPEAKER_04: Then I'm then I think I probably my life is positioned that I'm searching for what I don't know that I need.
- 16:30SPEAKER_04: I don't know if that's a I've never thought about it.
- 16:32SPEAKER_04: You just kind of jack me up.
- 16:34SPEAKER_04: Sorry.
- 16:34SPEAKER_04: Do I wake up and go, I got everything.
- 16:37SPEAKER_04: What don't I got?
- 16:38SPEAKER_04: What don't I what what do I have that I don't know I have?
- 16:41SPEAKER_02: What do I have that I don't know I have?
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: That should be on a pillow.
- 16:43SPEAKER_02: What don't I got?
- 16:44SPEAKER_02: What don't I got?
- 16:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's oh I'm so sorry.
- 16:47SPEAKER_04: Miss Schroer, my 11th grade English teacher.
- 16:50SPEAKER_02: Oh man, I'm so biblical scholar, because English scholar, he is not.
- 16:54SPEAKER_04: He is not.
- 16:55SPEAKER_04: I'm I not am not.
- 16:59SPEAKER_02: Um isn't that what's amazing about scripture?
- 17:03SPEAKER_02: Causes you to consider things you never would have before.
- 17:06SPEAKER_04: Ever.
- 17:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, of course.
- 17:09SPEAKER_04: But but to think about he's given me everything that I don't even know that I know that I have, it's but that's what it's the way I read scripture.
- 17:16SPEAKER_04: Like I'm I'm always digging for the thing that I can find that no one's seen or that I haven't seen.
- 17:21SPEAKER_04: I show up on a Sunday morning.
- 17:22SPEAKER_04: It's if anybody out there thinks I'm really profound, I'm about to ruin it for you.
- 17:26SPEAKER_04: I show up on stage and and really my ministry is look what I found.
- 17:30SPEAKER_04: You know, and and and I think this is really cool.
- 17:32SPEAKER_04: And you you tell me what you think.
- 17:34SPEAKER_04: And then most people are like, I feel like he's talking to me.
- 17:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah, because I presented it in a way where you have to think about what I just found.
- 17:39SPEAKER_04: I don't really always wrap that up, but the day that that doesn't work anymore is the day I've got to go do something else.
- 17:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 17:45SPEAKER_04: I love that.
- 17:46SPEAKER_02: Go back to hospitality, go back to making coffee for people.
- 17:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 17:49SPEAKER_02: Nothing wrong with that.
- 17:50SPEAKER_02: Nothing wrong with that.
- 17:51SPEAKER_02: In fact, we'll get to that.
- 17:53SPEAKER_02: That's some of the taking care of people's service.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: Uh we'll get we'll get into the to those things there.
- 17:59SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 18:00SPEAKER_02: So if God transforms us, what role do we play in transformation?
- 18:10SPEAKER_04: Are long pause is good for the podcast?
- 18:13SPEAKER_04: If God transforms us, what role do we play?
- 18:16SPEAKER_02: Um Is it as simple as an awareness?
- 18:18SPEAKER_03: I think there's more because he's like well he he he seems like he's calling us to a a very active path.
- 18:28SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 18:29SPEAKER_03: So in that.
- 18:31SPEAKER_03: I think so so the structure of the way this is written and the sermon's not written.
- 18:37SPEAKER_03: I'm still looking at it.
- 18:38SPEAKER_04: Uh if he says he's giving you everything you need, then he gives you then he gives you a math equation, right?
- 18:44SPEAKER_04: A word equation for what you're supposed to do.
- 18:45SPEAKER_04: What's the what's the what's the purpose in all of that?
- 18:48SPEAKER_04: Um I I think it's it's it's because we are invited to participate in the divine nature.
- 18:55SPEAKER_04: So that tells me that Jesus loves us as we are, but he then invites us into a process so that we don't stay as we are.
- 19:02SPEAKER_04: So to participate in the divine nature means to not be in the physical nature.
- 19:06SPEAKER_04: The Paul would say, Here are the works of the flesh.
- 19:10SPEAKER_04: So I I think your question was, What how does that what does that look like?
- 19:13SPEAKER_04: I think it is the it is the combating of those things.
- 19:16SPEAKER_04: The the the important thing to remember is it's not it's not for uh heavenly benefit, it's not for those things.
- 19:25SPEAKER_04: I think it is for the benefit of those that are around you, and I think you inherently when you live that way, you experience the fruit of the spirit.
- 19:34SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 19:34SPEAKER_04: So not, hey, what do I get out of this?
- 19:37SPEAKER_04: There is a there's an intrinsic value of living in the godly nature, um, but it I it goes beyond yourself, which is the message, right?
- 19:44SPEAKER_04: It goes it it shows up in the world for other people to be able to see it, right?
- 19:48SPEAKER_04: The divine nature.
- 19:49SPEAKER_04: I always like to think about God, you know, you start in the old testament, people struggle with how God was revealed through the nation of Israel and and how that happened.
- 19:56SPEAKER_04: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, ultimately he chooses Israel and um and but I don't think he chose Israel to be exclusive of the rest of the world.
- 20:03SPEAKER_04: He chose Israel to reveal himself to the rest of the world.
- 20:06SPEAKER_04: This is that, I I believe.
- 20:08SPEAKER_04: So he loves us as we are.
- 20:10SPEAKER_04: We receive the knowledge of Christ, which gives us everything and all the promises.
- 20:14SPEAKER_04: Now you go figure out what that is, you allow it to start transforming transforming your life.
- 20:18SPEAKER_04: Can you close off and make it all about yourself?
- 20:20SPEAKER_04: Sure.
- 20:21SPEAKER_04: But you're missing the larger point.
- 20:23SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 20:23SPEAKER_04: It's to it's to show up in the world as as revealing God to the world, which is the ultimate heart and design of God.
- 20:29SPEAKER_04: We're back to we value people and we value connection.
- 20:32SPEAKER_04: Then you learn, here's the practical faith pieces.
- 20:34SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 20:35SPEAKER_04: Transformation starts to move us in that direction.
- 20:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 20:37SPEAKER_04: That's it.
- 20:38SPEAKER_04: I don't know if that answers your question, but it's an answer.
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, practical faith seems to lead to transformation.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: You know, it's it's the practice of it.
- 20:46SPEAKER_02: It is because in the next section, the five five through seven, you see very much, and it is a compliment to the fruits of the spirit to what you're saying.
- 20:55SPEAKER_02: Paul's saying, hey, these are divine things that can be produced in you if you understand the truth of who you are now.
- 21:04SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 21:04SPEAKER_02: And and this is kind of the compliment Peter's saying, hey, these are the things to strive for because it's not, it doesn't just happen to you.
- 21:11SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 21:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and and I and I think I've not done this yet, but I want to.
- 21:16SPEAKER_04: I hope I do.
- 21:18SPEAKER_04: I have every intention to do this.
- 21:20SPEAKER_04: These words that are given here, um, so in verse uh verse five, for this reason, and so you gotta go back and you gotta back up to the reason, so that we we can become participants in the divine nature.
- 21:29SPEAKER_04: For this reason, you must make every effort too, and then he gives you this equation of how to make every effort to participate in the divine nature.
- 21:40SPEAKER_04: That's what he's saying.
- 21:41SPEAKER_04: And then he gives us some words, and I I don't I didn't count them.
- 21:43SPEAKER_04: Somebody in the Bible study said seven, seven virtues.
- 21:47SPEAKER_04: But remember, these are words that are translated from one language into another, and every translation is gonna have different words.
- 21:55SPEAKER_04: Each one probably requires multiple words to hit the actual mark of what he meant.
- 22:00SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 22:00SPEAKER_04: But they make sense.
- 22:01SPEAKER_04: So so just look at the first one.
- 22:03SPEAKER_04: He says, uh For this very reason you must make every effort to support your faith with goodness.
- 22:10SPEAKER_04: Now what's yours what's your word there for goodness?
- 22:13SPEAKER_02: Uh moral excellence.
- 22:14SPEAKER_04: Moral excellence.
- 22:15SPEAKER_04: Goodness sounds like a cop-out.
- 22:17SPEAKER_04: Just be good.
- 22:18SPEAKER_04: We've lost the meaning for good.
- 22:19SPEAKER_04: What is moral excellence?
- 22:21SPEAKER_04: Well, it speaks of a standard.
- 22:23SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 22:23SPEAKER_04: A moral standard.
- 22:24SPEAKER_04: So if you have if you discover faith, usually when you become a person who discovers faith, one of the first things that you hopefully will do is look at your morality, the decisions you're making in life.
- 22:36SPEAKER_04: And so what he says is take your goodness and add to it moral excellence.
- 22:39SPEAKER_04: Goodness, my Bible says.
- 22:41SPEAKER_04: So there are things that you're doing today you should not be doing.
- 22:45SPEAKER_04: It does not, it does not reflect the divine nature of God.
- 22:50SPEAKER_04: So he's saying start doing those things differently.
- 22:54SPEAKER_04: Or stop doing those things, right?
- 22:56SPEAKER_04: Stop doing those things that you're doing.
- 22:58SPEAKER_04: And then he says to moral, to goodness or to moral excellence, knowledge.
- 23:02SPEAKER_04: Knowledge, yeah.
- 23:03SPEAKER_04: Well, you know, you you you so you can scan your life and go, yeah, I know a couple of those things I shouldn't be doing.
- 23:09SPEAKER_04: But then you don't know what you don't know.
- 23:11SPEAKER_04: So knowledge has to be added to it.
- 23:12SPEAKER_04: So that's the study, that's the learning, that's the scripture, that's spending time in small groups, that's the apostles' teaching, that's all of that.
- 23:19SPEAKER_04: I'm teaching the whole sermon.
- 23:20SPEAKER_04: Um, and then there's self-control.
- 23:22SPEAKER_04: You how isn't it amazing that sometimes we know what to do, but we don't do it.
- 23:28SPEAKER_04: So I I guess what I'm trying to say is each one of these builds on on the other.
- 23:34SPEAKER_04: And and I think Peter is combating that group that heard Paul's argument about um faith over law, and they're like, man, good, sweet, just abandon the law and let's go do everything that we want to do.
- 23:54SPEAKER_04: And and he's like, No, no, no.
- 23:56SPEAKER_04: You're not gonna be participating in the divine nature of what of what God has intended for us to be a part of.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: So I don't know.
- 24:05SPEAKER_04: I just I just jacked the whole text.
- 24:06SPEAKER_03: No, okay.
- 24:08SPEAKER_02: And it ends in love.
- 24:10SPEAKER_02: Ends in love.
- 24:11SPEAKER_02: With love for everyone.
- 24:12SPEAKER_02: So it leads you to something and to I think you said this earlier, not to a solitary kind of I have divine perfect uh knowledge given to me and understanding now, but I'm gonna keep it to myself.
- 24:27SPEAKER_04: It has to end in in love for for all.
- 24:30SPEAKER_04: Which I would think is the divine nature.
- 24:33SPEAKER_04: So the divine nature, remember we said we I believe that we connect because God is the great connector?
- 24:38SPEAKER_04: I think that's the design.
- 24:39SPEAKER_04: So part of our lives at some point has to go out, has to extend beyond ourselves.
- 24:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 24:46SPEAKER_04: And we're seeing that show up here.
- 24:48SPEAKER_02: That's good.
- 24:48SPEAKER_02: Uh I pulled this quote from somebody.
- 24:51SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 24:52SPEAKER_02: It's not Spurgeon?
- 24:52SPEAKER_02: No.
- 24:53SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: Godliness can't remain selfish and solitary.
- 24:56SPEAKER_02: Love for God begins expressing itself as love toward others.
- 25:00SPEAKER_02: So it is it is that the funny thing about faith.
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: It's it ends with it starts with the end and vi you know what I mean?
- 25:08SPEAKER_02: It it ends and you're back to the grace.
- 25:11SPEAKER_02: Grace and love, yin and love, it starts with grace, but it's all it's all of those things.
- 25:15SPEAKER_02: But it and it's all of an understanding.
- 25:18SPEAKER_02: I love how you've uh framed that about the participation in the divine, participation in the spiritual things in understanding of that, more so than us uh coming to that conclusion ourselves.
- 25:32SPEAKER_02: It starts with, hey, here's what Jesus has done for you.
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: And so because of that, now it's a response to not not a uh, oh man, I gotta I gotta do this.
- 25:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah, or or look how awesome I am.
- 25:46SPEAKER_04: It's not that it's a it is a you become a part of the grand story and reason for being.
- 25:53SPEAKER_04: It's a participation in the in the godly nature.
- 25:57SPEAKER_04: Um so so I I think the work that we do ourselves goes way beyond ourselves.
- 26:03SPEAKER_04: We experience life differently.
- 26:05SPEAKER_04: All of these things help us to to navigate through.
- 26:08SPEAKER_04: Uh you you have to remember the person that's writing it.
- 26:11SPEAKER_04: It doesn't preclude um from pro from problems.
- 26:13SPEAKER_04: That's right.
- 26:13SPEAKER_04: The guy is in prison and ultimately dies.
- 26:16SPEAKER_04: He's nailed to a cross.
- 26:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:18SPEAKER_02: Or failures.
- 26:19SPEAKER_02: I mean, let's look at verse eight.
- 26:21SPEAKER_02: This is kind of reassuring to me.
- 26:23SPEAKER_02: Um the more you grow like this, some say an increasing measure.
- 26:28SPEAKER_02: So it it uh it uh paints the picture of you're not gonna do this person perfectly.
- 26:35SPEAKER_02: You know, there will be there will be mistakes along the way, and it it is a process.
- 26:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, is kind of what he's saying there.
- 26:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:41SPEAKER_02: It's an increasing in measure, meaning it's you're not gonna just wake up and nail all these things.
- 26:46SPEAKER_04: Increasing, increasing among you they keep you from being ineffective and unfruitful in the knowledge.
- 26:53SPEAKER_04: And so if the knowledge is what gives us the promises, right?
- 26:57SPEAKER_04: Like all it's man, it's very systematic what he put together.
- 27:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 27:01SPEAKER_04: And I mean you could uh I uh you could sit down and you could write the word structure on a board and figure out what links to what and how the piece falls in there.
- 27:10unknown: I don't know.
- 27:11SPEAKER_04: It's a perfect verse for this week when we think about transformation.
- 27:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:14SPEAKER_02: So how let me ask you a question then.
- 27:16SPEAKER_02: So nine, those who failed to develop in this way are short-sighted or blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins.
- 27:24SPEAKER_02: So what how does remembering what Jesus has done help us to live into our own transformation?
- 27:33SPEAKER_04: How does it remember or how does what what we do cause us to forget?
- 27:36SPEAKER_04: I mean, either way, I guess, right?
- 27:38SPEAKER_04: Chicken or the egg.
- 27:39SPEAKER_04: Um start with the end in mind.
- 27:42SPEAKER_04: We were intended to be in relationship with God.
- 27:45SPEAKER_04: So the moment that we get out of that or we get into a different place, then then maybe we're reminded that we've we've we've lost our ultimate purpose.
- 27:53SPEAKER_04: I mean you I'm trying to think of what you just asked me.
- 27:56SPEAKER_04: It was a really good question.
- 27:58SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna start writing these things down.
- 28:00SPEAKER_04: I think you just throw questions out there.
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: How does remembering it is I think that's the theme of today.
- 28:06SPEAKER_02: You start with the end in mind.
- 28:07SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 28:07SPEAKER_02: But how does remembering what Jesus has done then help us live out our own transformation?
- 28:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh he's the he's the test.
- 28:14SPEAKER_04: I mean not the test, but he's the goal in terms of perfection, right?
- 28:18SPEAKER_04: The way that he laid his life down.
- 28:19SPEAKER_04: Those are all those those keys that are there.
- 28:21SPEAKER_04: That was an easier answer and just should have listened.
- 28:24SPEAKER_04: It's hard.
- 28:24SPEAKER_04: We got a lot going on.
- 28:25SPEAKER_04: There's a lot of lights, we got multiple.
- 28:27SPEAKER_04: And there's people dropping tables outside.
- 28:29SPEAKER_04: Sounds like a war zone outside there being moved.
- 28:32SPEAKER_04: Exciting things happening here.
- 28:33SPEAKER_02: It is church.
- 28:34SPEAKER_02: Um, one thing that has stuck with me for years and years is the idea, and maybe it speaks to the idea of uh this is not self-help.
- 28:44SPEAKER_02: You know, transformation is not like self-uh betterment or whatever you call it.
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: You know, there's a whole there's a whole book section about how to help yourself.
- 28:52SPEAKER_02: This is not that.
- 28:53SPEAKER_02: And even that idea of transformation, it's not becoming a better version of yourself, it's becoming more like Jesus.
- 29:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 29:00SPEAKER_02: I mean, that has always stuck with me because, you know, behavior modification, there's been a million things to call it.
- 29:08SPEAKER_02: The goal is is never ourself.
- 29:10SPEAKER_02: It never starts and ends with becoming you.
- 29:13SPEAKER_02: I mean, the the point of becoming better versions of ourself, in quote, is is to become actually produce things that are more like Jesus and less like us.
- 29:22SPEAKER_04: By definition, that may happen, right?
- 29:24SPEAKER_04: In this, yeah.
- 29:25SPEAKER_04: I mean, you're gonna become a better version of yourself.
- 29:26SPEAKER_04: You just may be a completely different version of yourself, right?
- 29:29SPEAKER_04: But that's transformation, right?
- 29:30SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 29:30SPEAKER_04: It's not adjustment.
- 29:32SPEAKER_04: It's not let's shift to the side a little bit.
- 29:33SPEAKER_04: It is a true transformation and a changing of who you are.
- 29:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:37SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 29:37SPEAKER_02: I feel like so.
- 29:38SPEAKER_02: You and I both came to faith later in life.
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: You were 18, I was 25.
- 29:43SPEAKER_02: And it, I know if I can speak for me, for you, was it a complete turnaround of 180?
- 29:51SPEAKER_04: Uh, that's an interesting question.
- 29:53SPEAKER_04: I so I had encounters with faith earlier.
- 29:57SPEAKER_04: So what it was for me was it it was a uh so and I had all the pieces, all the pieces that were there, and it wasn't even that I was betraying those pieces.
- 30:05SPEAKER_04: I don't think they anchored in a place to where they made sense to me because what ultimately kicked it for me was when I encountered people that were truly living into their faith, and I went, oh, oh, okay.
- 30:19SPEAKER_04: And so all the pieces start to fall into place, and and then I was immediately responsible for those things that I had learned that had been kind of either poured into me, or so I I don't know that it was an instant transformation, it was an instant realization where I went, oh man, I gotta have to do different.
- 30:38SPEAKER_04: Now, I I did, and you've heard me tell the story of uh I uh there's uh here we go.
- 30:44SPEAKER_04: Um story time.
- 30:45SPEAKER_04: I had met these folks that that worked at Louisiana Lanya that were uh folks, they were my age.
- 30:52SPEAKER_04: They went to Choctaw High School, I went to Fort Wellm Beach High School, they invited me to a party, I was going to a party.
- 30:57SPEAKER_04: Not that kind of party.
- 30:58SPEAKER_04: It was a Christian, not a Christian party.
- 30:59SPEAKER_04: It was they were sitting down and they were talking about the people that went to Choctaw High School that they were ministering to.
- 31:04SPEAKER_04: And I remember thinking, this is the weirdest party I've ever been to in my life.
- 31:07SPEAKER_04: So after spending time with them, it wasn't like the person that was there just dumped the gospel message on me.
- 31:14SPEAKER_04: Um, I just sat kind of as a wallflower listening to them, and man, it was a wrecking ball to my brain thinking, man, these people truly are owning their faith.
- 31:21SPEAKER_04: Like that's that's probably why when I hear when I read someone like Peter, I go, man, this guy's owning this in the faith of face of persecution.
- 31:28SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 31:29SPEAKER_04: So so then that was in Shalomar.
- 31:31SPEAKER_04: I live in Destin at the time.
- 31:33SPEAKER_04: He dropped me, brought me back.
- 31:34SPEAKER_04: I had my car, my little 71 Super Beetle parked at the foot of the Brooks Bridge.
- 31:38SPEAKER_04: Um, and I got in the in my car and I started driving back to Destin, and I had a killer sound system in that thing.
- 31:47SPEAKER_04: And I I can and I said on the way back, okay, God, if you're real, I'm in.
- 31:52SPEAKER_04: I'm all in.
- 31:53SPEAKER_04: And I felt prompted.
- 31:55SPEAKER_04: Now the this is such an interesting thing because I would not have done this today, but I felt prompted because of previous teachings in my life in the 80s and in the in the in the 80s about righteousness and and being set apart from the world, that the music I had was not was going to separate me from God.
- 32:14SPEAKER_04: So I crossed the bridge, pulled into what at the time was Hardy's, I think it's a Whataburger now.
- 32:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:20SPEAKER_04: And threw all of my CDs in in the dumpster.
- 32:26SPEAKER_04: I mean a lot.
- 32:27SPEAKER_04: And I have since, I would say I since spent the rest of my life trying to get all those back.
- 32:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 32:32SPEAKER_04: But now it's Spotify, so you don't need that.
- 32:34SPEAKER_04: I don't need to.
- 32:35SPEAKER_04: Just paying a service every month to get those back.
- 32:37SPEAKER_04: But somebody, somebody got a really good gathering of collection there.
- 32:43SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 32:43SPEAKER_04: All that stuff.
- 32:44SPEAKER_04: So I'm not and not encouraging you to go listen to any of that, but um that's yeah.
- 32:50SPEAKER_04: Well, I love that so that was an instant transformation.
- 32:53SPEAKER_02: So I did that.
- 32:53SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
- 32:54SPEAKER_02: Well, and I love in in your story how those seeds that were planted throughout your life then were, you know, God watered them.
- 33:03SPEAKER_02: And yeah, I mean, yeah, that that's what that, you know, uh teaching a child up in the ways or you know, whatever, um, the the people that just speak into your life over that.
- 33:15SPEAKER_04: So back to you though, how was there an instant transformation?
- 33:18SPEAKER_02: It was okay, yeah.
- 33:19SPEAKER_02: I mean, the the practicalities of life were was a process because you know, you don't just wake up, you wake up feeling different, but you don't necessarily wake up doing different.
- 33:30SPEAKER_02: And so there were there were some things to his point, right?
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 33:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 33:33SPEAKER_02: So that that part was absolutely a process, but I mean, I it was an instant transformation in the sense of my eyes were truly open to a completely different way of looking at myself and the world and those around me.
- 33:47SPEAKER_02: Um, and then God very graciously over time, you know, started removing friends away and you know, just things and just changing my heart.
- 33:55SPEAKER_02: I mean, it truly was that.
- 33:57SPEAKER_02: And uh ever every everything in my life changed.
- 34:00SPEAKER_02: Everything.
- 34:01SPEAKER_02: Um, just just and and it was the coolest ride, and it still is.
- 34:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 34:07SPEAKER_02: You want another story?
- 34:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, of course.
- 34:08SPEAKER_04: So um the back and this was this is truly one of the first truths I understood was do not be conform to the pattern of the Romans.
- 34:16SPEAKER_04: Do not be conform to the pattern of this world, we'll be transformed by the renewing your mind.
- 34:19SPEAKER_04: So getting rid of my CDs, right?
- 34:21SPEAKER_04: And at the time, my friends, it was all um uh Guns N' Roses, Def Leopard.
- 34:27SPEAKER_04: But they also there was like this this run of two live crew, which is just filth, right?
- 34:32SPEAKER_04: Right through the middle of our surf culture is what we were doing.
- 34:36SPEAKER_04: And and I just I just knew I couldn't listen to that stuff.
- 34:39SPEAKER_04: So I tried to gravitate towards Christian music at the time, which was terrible.
- 34:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 34:44SPEAKER_04: Uh and and so I I would pick up praise worship, which was like Maranatha Praise.
- 34:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 34:49SPEAKER_04: And and um the song that I just that just was the song As the Deer Panteth for the Water, right?
- 34:58SPEAKER_04: So which is a great hymn, but tried to put into some sort of modern vernacular.
- 35:02SPEAKER_04: I can remember going surfing with my friends.
- 35:04SPEAKER_04: I'd have my Walkman that I'd listen to in the car on the way there, listening to As the Deer Panteth for the Water.
- 35:10SPEAKER_04: Imagine paddling out into the lineup with that song in your head versus some of the other stuff that was starting my heart or something.
- 35:17SPEAKER_04: But but that was so that was the shift.
- 35:20SPEAKER_04: Transformation, though.
- 35:21SPEAKER_04: Yes, getting you know, garbage in, garbage out.
- 35:24SPEAKER_02: So I was trying to change.
- 35:25SPEAKER_02: So I had a I had a music moment too.
- 35:28SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 35:28SPEAKER_02: I flung a couple CDs out the window.
- 35:30SPEAKER_02: Now you're talking on the highway.
- 35:32SPEAKER_02: All right, yes, because there was a moment where I was like, this just doesn't this just can't live together.
- 35:38SPEAKER_02: Put the toss on it, and I just out.
- 35:40SPEAKER_02: So I had I had a pretty wide range of music tastes.
- 35:43SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 35:43SPEAKER_02: Everything from you know, rock alternative, some rap, uh, to like heavy, heavy metal music.
- 35:50SPEAKER_04: You should research Jeff.
- 35:52SPEAKER_04: Go back, dig deep.
- 35:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, there's some great photos.
- 35:54SPEAKER_02: There was some pretty like heavy music that leaned more on I'd say the darker, you know, side.
- 35:59SPEAKER_02: Like I didn't care about that.
- 36:00SPEAKER_02: I just like the music, but I was like, yeah, it just you know, you just get to a point you didn't feel right about it.
- 36:06SPEAKER_02: So um I had a moment like that too.
- 36:08SPEAKER_02: So there's a couple of slipknot CDs out on the road.
- 36:11SPEAKER_02: They're on the side of the road somewhere.
- 36:12SPEAKER_04: Somebody for years from now are gonna be metal detecting and fine.
- 36:15SPEAKER_04: What is this music?
- 36:15SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, it'll be a fine someday.
- 36:18SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, man.
- 36:19SPEAKER_02: No, it's good.
- 36:20SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm excited about uh closing out the series.
- 36:23SPEAKER_02: Are you you ready to preach this?
- 36:25SPEAKER_02: It's been a great series.
- 36:26SPEAKER_04: Next is Hebrews.
- 36:28SPEAKER_04: Please read ahead.
- 36:29SPEAKER_04: Hebrews, Jeff has been prodding me to teach Hebrews for a long time, and it's not easy, it's awesome.
- 36:37SPEAKER_02: Like there's a lot of great insight, but uh there's a lot of work to do if you're not Jewish.
- 36:44SPEAKER_04: There's a lot of work to do if you're not Jewish.
- 36:46SPEAKER_04: I mean, it is written to a person that is very knowledgeable in the Torah.
- 36:49SPEAKER_04: So you so like from a teaching perspective, I'm gonna have to say, just imagine if you knew all of this.
- 36:56SPEAKER_04: Here's the takeaway.
- 36:59SPEAKER_04: Uh, and good luck.
- 37:00SPEAKER_04: I I don't know.
- 37:01SPEAKER_04: Uh we're gonna do that work tomorrow.
- 37:02SPEAKER_04: I mean uh next week.
- 37:04SPEAKER_02: Can't wait.
- 37:04SPEAKER_02: I'm really excited about that.
- 37:06SPEAKER_02: It's a lot of scriptures, you're gonna have to you're gonna have to read a lot.
- 37:09SPEAKER_04: Go ahead and read chapters one and two and hold on tight.
- 37:11SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 37:11SPEAKER_02: So awesome, man.
- 37:13SPEAKER_02: I appreciate the time as always.
- 37:14SPEAKER_04: It's fun.
- 37:15SPEAKER_04: Love y'all.
- 37:15SPEAKER_02: We'll see you guys Sunday.
