- 0:01Speaker 1: Local news now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Brian Medore. The RNC have laid 45 additional sex-related
- 0:10Speaker 2: charges against a man accused in an investigation involving dozens
- 0:15Speaker 2: of young women and girls on the Northeast Avalon. A
- 0:19Speaker 2: publication ban is in place to protect the victims, VOCM's
- 0:22Speaker 2: Linda Swain reports.
- 0:24Speaker 1: The investigation was launched in February following a report involving
- 0:27Speaker 1: a young person at a home in the metro region,
- 0:29Speaker 1: which led to charges against a 45-year-old man. RNC say
- 0:33Speaker 1: electronic devices were seized and further investigation identified another 15
- 0:37Speaker 1: young people and five adult victims. Investigators laid 45 additional
- 0:42Speaker 1: charges against the accused this week, including 15 counts of voyeurism,
- 0:46Speaker 1: 14 counts of possession of material depicting child sexual exploitation,
- 0:50Speaker 1: sexual interference, sexual assault, and being a householder permitting sexual activity.
- 0:55Speaker 1: A full list of charges can be found at vocm.com.
- 0:59Speaker 2: A hunter has been charged after somebody fired a rifle
- 1:03Speaker 2: from the roadside on the New Harbor Barrens. RCMP recalled
- 1:07Speaker 2: just after 8 o'clock Wednesday morning following reports that a
- 1:10Speaker 2: person dressed in hunting gear had discharged a gun on
- 1:14Speaker 2: the road near Tilton. Officers arrived to find a woman
- 1:18Speaker 2: with a hunting rifle standing next to a vehicle parked
- 1:21Speaker 2: on the shoulder of the road. The woman provided the
- 1:24Speaker 2: officers with valid firearms and hunting permits and the rifle
- 1:28Speaker 2: was seized by police. She was arrested without incident and
- 1:32Speaker 2: has been charged with careless use of a firearm. She
- 1:34Speaker 2: was also issued two tickets for violating provincial hunting regulations.
- 1:39Speaker 2: The woman will appear in court in December. Supreme Court
- 1:43Speaker 2: of Canada says it will hear an appeal of Ottawa's
- 1:46Speaker 2: ban on single-use plastics. The Federal Court of Appeal overturned
- 1:51Speaker 2: a lower court decision in January, allowing the federal government
- 1:54Speaker 2: to keep the ban in place. A 2023 federal court
- 1:58Speaker 2: decision in a case brought by the plastics industry said
- 2:02Speaker 2: Ottawa had overstepped by designating all plastic manufactured items as toxic.
- 2:08Speaker 2: But in a unanimous decision in January, the three-judge appellate
- 2:12Speaker 2: panel ruled the federal government's decision to list plastic manufactured
- 2:16Speaker 2: items as toxic was reasonable. Ottawa used that designation to
- 2:21Speaker 2: issue a ban on the manufacturing and importing of six
- 2:24Speaker 2: types of single-use plastics, including straws, grocery bags, stir sticks,
- 2:30Speaker 2: and the six-pack rings used to hold soda and beer cans.
- 2:35Speaker 2: A global player in freight forwarding and logistics is looking
- 2:39Speaker 2: to expand its footprint in Newfoundland and Labrador, citing opportunities
- 2:44Speaker 2: arising from the Beta Nord project and the Churchill Falls Agreement.
- 2:48Speaker 2: The Port of Singapore Authority acquired BDP in 2022, for
- 2:53Speaker 2: a significantly large investment to become PSA BDP, operating some
- 2:59Speaker 2: 150 offices globally. The company, which has an office in Paradise,
- 3:04Speaker 2: is hoping to expand that operation by hiring locally. That's
- 3:08Speaker 2: your news. I'm Brian Medour.
