Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to Seattle Kraken Hockey on the Global Credit Union
- 0:07Speaker 1: Kraken Audio Network. Brought to you by Coors Light, your
- 0:11Speaker 1: Western Washington Toyota dealers, Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, Muckleshoot Casino Resort,
- 0:17Speaker 1: by Liuna, Symetra, and by McDonald's.
- 0:22Speaker 2: It was deja vu for the Seattle Kraken on Sunday
- 0:26Speaker 2: against Calgary, as a carbon copy performance of last week's
- 0:29Speaker 2: season opener propelled the team to a dominant win in
- 0:33Speaker 2: their home opener. 11 different players found the score sheet,
- 0:37Speaker 2: led by a two goal performance from Mackie Samaskevich, and
- 0:40Speaker 2: two point nights for three others on their way to
- 0:43Speaker 2: a 6-1 win, their second such win of the season. Tonight,
- 0:47Speaker 2: Seattle wraps up their brief homestand against the Vegas Golden Knights,
- 0:51Speaker 2: who are coming off of a Western Conference Championship but
- 0:54Speaker 2: who have also lost three straight and four of their
- 0:57Speaker 2: last five inside of Climate Pledge Arena.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Welcome inside of Climate Pledge Arena alongside Big Al Kaniski.
- 1:06Speaker 4: I am Everett Fitzhugh.
- 1:08Speaker 2: This is Seattle Kraken Hockey on the Global Credit Union
- 1:11Speaker 2: Kraken Audio Network. You are listening to the pregame show
- 1:14Speaker 2: served up by Frostbrew Coors Light.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Choose chill. My main man, Al. I'm a little lonely
- 1:20Speaker 3: up here, partner.
- 1:21Speaker 2: You're all the way down on ice level today between
- 1:24Speaker 2: the benches.
- 1:24Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:25Speaker 3: You warm enough yet?
- 1:26Speaker 6: You know what?
- 1:27Speaker 7: After the last time I did this, I realized it's
- 1:30Speaker 7: actually warmer down here than.
- 1:32Speaker 8: It is up there.
- 1:32Speaker 3: I don't have the AC blowing in my face down here.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Well, the Kraken, they were blowing all types of smoke
- 1:38Speaker 2: against Calgary on Sunday. A 6-1 win, their second 6-1
- 1:43Speaker 2: win of the season. And say what you want about
- 1:46Speaker 2: it being the Flames or what have you, you need
- 1:48Speaker 2: to find ways to win those games handedly, and the
- 1:51Speaker 2: Kraken did.
- 1:52Speaker 8: Yeah, they absolutely did.
- 1:53Speaker 7: They came out with another great start, owning the offense
- 1:56Speaker 7: and taking care of things on their own end. Joey
- 1:58Speaker 7: Decord once again playing an awesome game, keeping pucks in
- 2:02Speaker 7: front of him. But a lot of that comes down
- 2:04Speaker 7: to D-Zone structure too, limiting the number of pucks that
- 2:07Speaker 7: get to the front of his net. The Kraken are
- 2:09Speaker 7: 15th in the league as far as pucks getting to
- 2:12Speaker 7: their goaltender. So limiting those shots to the goal makes
- 2:15Speaker 7: the goaltender's job much easier.
- 2:16Speaker 3: Well, you talk about defense. The Kraken had 22 blocked
- 2:20Speaker 3: shots on Sunday. against Calgary.
- 2:22Speaker 2: They had 18 in Edmonton, 20 the first game of
- 2:25Speaker 2: the season. They've got 60 blocked shots already this year
- 2:29Speaker 2: to go along with 13 goals. Listen, Lane Lambert is
- 2:32Speaker 2: a defense first coach, and when he sees 60 blocks
- 2:35Speaker 2: on the leisure, you have to imagine he's pretty happy
- 2:38Speaker 2: with that performance.
- 2:39Speaker 7: Yeah, he absolutely is. And, you know, you love that
- 2:41Speaker 7: part of the Kraken game, and I think it's a
- 2:43Speaker 7: key part. And obviously invites potential for injuries. You hope
- 2:47Speaker 7: that's not the result. You hope they're deflections and not
- 2:50Speaker 7: straight on shots. But, you know, give the guys lots
- 2:53Speaker 7: of credit. It's not easy to stand in front of
- 2:55Speaker 7: 100 mile an hour blast.
- 2:57Speaker 2: 13 goals on the season is the most through three games.
- 3:00Speaker 2: in franchise history. Their previous high was 10 in the
- 3:05Speaker 2: 22-23 season. Something fun happened at the end of that year.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Kraken made their first trip to the Stanley Cup playoffs.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Outside of the opponents that they have been playing partner,
- 3:15Speaker 2: what have you felt has been the biggest reason for
- 3:17Speaker 2: this offensive explosion for Seattle? What are the Kraken doing
- 3:21Speaker 2: in order to have now scored 13 goals this season.
- 3:24Speaker 4: Well, you're peeking at my.
- 3:25Speaker 7: Keys to the game, but I'll give you a little
- 3:26Speaker 7: bit of luck. It's that transition game. Obviously, their game
- 3:30Speaker 7: starts in the defensive zone. We talked about blocked shots,
- 3:32Speaker 7: we talked about goaltending, but it's that transition out of
- 3:35Speaker 7: the defensive zone that's been so crisp. That first pass
- 3:38Speaker 7: from the defenseman, oftentimes it's somewhere high in the neutral zone,
- 3:42Speaker 7: oftentimes it's the far blue line, And just like that,
- 3:45Speaker 7: they're attacking. So that quick transition resulted in a quick
- 3:48Speaker 7: attack has been giving them some great opportunities.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Let's go across the red line now and look at
- 3:52Speaker 2: the Vegas Golden Knights coming off of a Western Conference championship,
- 3:56Speaker 2: their third Western Conference championship in their brief 10 year,
- 4:01Speaker 2: now 10 year history. This is the team that is
- 4:03Speaker 2: used to playing in tight games last year. They were
- 4:06Speaker 2: thirty nine, twenty six and seventeen. 95 points, which was
- 4:10Speaker 2: the most points in the division.
- 4:12Speaker 3: They raised a banner. If you put them in the.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Eastern Conference last year, partner, Vegas would have been four
- 4:18Speaker 2: points back of the cut line tied with the Washington Capitals.
- 4:22Speaker 2: All of this to say this is a team that
- 4:24Speaker 2: takes advantage of their situation, and they are used to
- 4:28Speaker 2: and good at playing in those close, tight games.
- 4:31Speaker 7: They absolutely are, and their offense runs for Jack Eichel.
- 4:34Speaker 7: He's got six points so far, including five assists. Those
- 4:38Speaker 7: five assists are tied right now for second most NHL.
- 4:40Speaker 7: He is a playmaker. He can generate a ton of offense.
- 4:43Speaker 7: You've got to be aware of when he's on the
- 4:45Speaker 7: ice and you've got to play him tight.
- 4:46Speaker 3: We're on the air earlier here than normal today.
- 4:49Speaker 2: As new this season, the Kraken taking a page out
- 4:52Speaker 2: of the Seattle Mariners playbook. Certain weekday games, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
- 4:58Speaker 2: and Thursday, weekday home games are scheduled to start at
- 5:03Speaker 2: 6.40 p.m. Now, there are a couple of national conflicts
- 5:07Speaker 2: in there. I think it runs in. to about 24
- 5:09Speaker 2: of the 42 home games this season will be 640
- 5:14Speaker 2: starts here. So that'll be plenty of time for folks
- 5:17Speaker 2: to get down and get home early. But for now,
- 5:19Speaker 2: Mike Benton, he's ready early. He's standing by with more
- 5:22Speaker 2: of your pregame show on the Coors Light Landing. Section

- 8:45Speaker 4: with you.
- 8:46Speaker 13: Back for the Coors Light landing in Section 20 as
- 8:48Speaker 13: the Kraken aiming for their first 3-1 start in franchise history. 2-1,
- 8:53Speaker 13: of course, their record. Four points on the season in
- 8:56Speaker 13: this bearing matchup. 1-4 against Vegas. The Kraken last season
- 9:01Speaker 13: won both games against the Golden Knights here in Seattle.
- 9:04Speaker 13: Both were very close, also decided by a one-goal margin. Vegas,
- 9:09Speaker 13: same record, 2-1. They've got four points on the year.
- 9:12Speaker 13: And should they fall to 2-2? Well, that could mean nothing.
- 9:15Speaker 13: They began that way last year and got all the
- 9:17Speaker 13: way to the Stanley Cup final, but they're aiming now
- 9:20Speaker 13: for their first 3-1 start for the first time in
- 9:23Speaker 13: two years. Flashing back here to the home opener, the
- 9:26Speaker 13: Kraken didn't go out just playing like they were out
- 9:29Speaker 13: for a win, but also it seemed out for style points.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Berkley Catten now in. He's got some speed. Berkley Catten
- 9:38Speaker 3: on the right side.
- 9:39Speaker 2: There's a backhand.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Shane Wright scores!
- 9:48Speaker 6: Oh my goodness!
- 9:49Speaker 3: The price was right on that!
- 9:52Speaker 2: Shane Wright caught the puck in tight space.
- 9:58Speaker 3: He bobbled it for a moment.
- 10:00Speaker 2: A spinorama five-hole backhand on Dustin Wolfe. And the Kraken
- 10:06Speaker 2: up by four, four-nothing with 8.02.
- 10:09Speaker 3: To play here in the second.
- 10:11Speaker 7: Well, it all starts with Berkley Catton down that right side.
- 10:14Speaker 7: He's a left-handed shot, so he's probably not thinking drive
- 10:17Speaker 7: the net, but he wants to push those Calgary defensemen back.
- 10:20Speaker 7: He takes them all the way down to the dot,
- 10:21Speaker 7: puts the brakes on, feeds right in the center, right
- 10:25Speaker 7: with a no-look backhand shot on net, beats Dustin Wolfe,
- 10:29Speaker 7: four-nothing Seattle.
- 10:30Speaker 13: If there is one thing we learned from that game
- 10:33Speaker 13: two nights ago, to borrow the phrase, the kids are
- 10:36Speaker 13: all right. Four of six goal scorers the Kraken had
- 10:39Speaker 13: in that game were age 23 or younger, and the
- 10:42Speaker 13: guy that you just heard, one of them in Shane Wright.
- 10:45Speaker 13: The Kraken also got two goals at a newcomer, Mackie Samaskevich,
- 10:49Speaker 13: and what a way for him to say hello, Seattle.
- 10:51Speaker 13: As Shane Wright chipping in, Caton, Berkeley Caton also getting
- 10:55Speaker 13: his first goal of the home schedule. Bobby McMahon, Jordan
- 10:58Speaker 13: Eberle also for good measure chipping in. Which bears some
- 11:02Speaker 13: luck as far as optimism here for this offense. The
- 11:04Speaker 13: Kraken getting 13 goals so far in the first three games.
- 11:07Speaker 13: That is their most in the first three games of
- 11:10Speaker 13: a season, besting the mark of 10 set.
- 11:13Speaker 4: Guess when?
- 11:15Speaker 13: 2022-23 when they made the Stanley Cup playoffs. Additionally, Jordan
- 11:19Speaker 13: Eberle's hot. Season opening point streak is now at three games,
- 11:23Speaker 13: and the Kraken also became the fourth team this season
- 11:26Speaker 13: to get multiple six-goal outings. They joined a group including Colorado,
- 11:31Speaker 13: the Canucks, and the Penguins, who all have done so
- 11:34Speaker 13: as well twice. Also, a guy shipping in offensively. He
- 11:38Speaker 13: loves home openers. That's Vince Dunn, and for good measure,
- 11:42Speaker 13: Get a load of this. He became the second player
- 11:44Speaker 13: in NHL history to get a point in each of
- 11:47Speaker 13: a franchise's first six home openers or more. The only
- 11:51Speaker 13: other guy to do that, you might have heard of him.
- 11:53Speaker 13: His name is Wayne Gretzky. He did that nine home
- 11:56Speaker 13: openers in a row between 1979 in 1987 with the
- 12:01Speaker 13: Edmonton Oilers. So things are looking rosy right now for
- 12:03Speaker 13: the Kraken offense. On the flip side, they did this
- 12:06Speaker 13: against a Calgary team that left Climate Pledge Arena 0-3
- 12:10Speaker 13: on the season and showed they have issues scoring and
- 12:13Speaker 13: they have issues defending. Their minus 13 goal differential is
- 12:17Speaker 13: worse than the NHL. Matter of fact, it is historical.
- 12:20Speaker 13: Only two teams were worse. to begin three games in
- 12:24Speaker 13: NHL history. That includes the Los Angeles Kings back in
- 12:28Speaker 13: 75-76 at minus 14, and the New York Rangers of 81-82,
- 12:32Speaker 13: who began that year at minus 15.
- 12:37Speaker 4: Yowza.
- 12:38Speaker 13: On the flip side, Joey Decord, very solid in net,
- 12:40Speaker 13: improving to 2-0, making 32 saves, and at 11 each
- 12:45Speaker 13: in period one and period three. So the meaning here
- 12:48Speaker 13: for this one, can the Kraken do it again against
- 12:50Speaker 13: a much tougher opponent?
- 12:52Speaker 4: That's Vegas.
- 12:52Speaker 13: They went 3-1 against the Golden Knights in the season series,
- 12:55Speaker 13: but they are showing that they are trending north head-to-head.
- 12:58Speaker 13: The Kraken have won five of the last six meetings
- 13:01Speaker 13: here in Seattle, which includes the Winter Classic, and their
- 13:04Speaker 13: aim right now, a four-game win streak over Vegas here
- 13:08Speaker 13: on home ice. As a matter of fact, can you
- 13:11Speaker 13: maybe expect lower scoring in that department? The Kraken have
- 13:14Speaker 13: scored three goals or more just one time, though, in
- 13:16Speaker 13: the last six meetings. Also, could you expect maybe a
- 13:19Speaker 13: tight game here? that respect five of the last seven
- 13:22Speaker 13: games have gone down to one goal so we'll see
- 13:25Speaker 13: how one so we'll see how this one stays close
- 13:28Speaker 13: as far as recent trends the Kraken offensively right now
- 13:31Speaker 13: averaging 4.3 goals a game so the offense certainly is
- 13:34Speaker 13: showing up that is right now six best in the
- 13:36Speaker 13: entire NHL matter of fact death throughout the lineup is
- 13:40Speaker 13: coming through only three forwards on their roster have yet
- 13:43Speaker 13: to record a point that being Jacob Alonso who was
- 13:45Speaker 13: on IR and Ben Myers and Curtis Douglas. Defensively, the
- 13:50Speaker 13: Kraken want to keep a good thing going as well.
- 13:51Speaker 13: 1.6 goals allowed per game. That is fourth best in
- 13:54Speaker 13: the NHL. But for good measure, a penalty kill also
- 13:58Speaker 13: showing up. They have killed five of six here to
- 14:00Speaker 13: begin the season, but also getting some help by just
- 14:02Speaker 13: simply staying.
- 14:04Speaker 4: Out of the box.
- 14:05Speaker 13: Only three teams have been shorthanded less than the Kraken
- 14:09Speaker 13: this season. That is Buffalo, Nashville. and New Jersey as well,
- 14:13Speaker 13: so we'll see if the Kraken can keep that up
- 14:15Speaker 13: here for tonight. The storylines on their side first off
- 14:17Speaker 13: begin with Chandler Stevenson and his impact as he faces...
- 14:21Speaker 13: his former team. He is aiming for a four-game point streak.
- 14:25Speaker 13: He's got five points last six matchups against Vegas, and
- 14:28Speaker 13: he will play once again in between Bobby McMahon and
- 14:32Speaker 13: Jordan Eberle. Secondly, it is Matty Beneers on milestone watch.
- 14:36Speaker 13: One more goal or assist gives him 200 career NHL points.
- 14:40Speaker 13: And our final storyline, Joey Decord will be in net
- 14:42Speaker 13: once again.
- 14:43Speaker 4: Five and two is.
- 14:44Speaker 13: His record against Vegas for his career, aiming now for
- 14:47Speaker 13: a four-game win streak against the Golden Knights. Let's hear
- 14:51Speaker 13: more on the Kraken side, and here's Vince Dunn talking
- 14:53Speaker 13: about the state of the Kraken through three games of
- 14:56Speaker 13: this young regular season.
- 14:58Speaker 14: Yeah, I think overall the confidence is pretty high right now,
- 15:00Speaker 14: and that's important, especially early on, and I think the
- 15:03Speaker 14: energy we've had through training camp has carried and transitioned
- 15:07Speaker 14: pretty well into the season, and I think the way
- 15:11Speaker 14: we came out at home is really important last game,
- 15:14Speaker 14: and we just need to focus on feeding from that
- 15:17Speaker 14: and bringing the same energy from the start of tonight's game.
- 15:21Speaker 13: One thing you'll hear from coaches and players sometimes in
- 15:23Speaker 13: the chaotic October is just keep it simple but the
- 15:25Speaker 13: Kraken have said that they want to make plays even
- 15:28Speaker 13: if they're available at this time of year and back
- 15:30Speaker 13: to Dunn on this issue because the Kraken are scoring
- 15:33Speaker 13: goals in very attractive kinds of ways with skill and
- 15:36Speaker 13: he said that's due to skill but also brains coming together.
- 15:40Speaker 14: A lot of the plays that we're making are resulting
- 15:42Speaker 14: into a lot of good scoring chances. I think when
- 15:47Speaker 14: we're playing with a lot of pressure in D zone
- 15:50Speaker 14: we're eliminating the time spent there and guys are having
- 15:53Speaker 14: the energy and the confidence to do what they do
- 15:56Speaker 14: best in the offensive zone. So I think a lot
- 16:00Speaker 14: of the plays we've made and the goals we've scored
- 16:04Speaker 14: haven't been certainly drawn up plays or trick plays by
- 16:09Speaker 14: any means. I think it's just guys being in the
- 16:12Speaker 14: right areas and being good teammates for each other to
- 16:16Speaker 14: put each other in good spots. That's what's most important
- 16:18Speaker 14: and when you do that a lot of good things
- 16:21Speaker 14: usually follow and the results come your way.
- 16:24Speaker 13: More on Dunn who talked about the Kraken facing Vegas
- 16:27Speaker 13: where in these kinds of games you've got to live
- 16:29Speaker 13: at one place and that's the front of the net.
- 16:31Speaker 13: Dunn said he likes the idea of getting even better
- 16:34Speaker 13: in that area in front of Joey DeCourt.
- 16:36Speaker 14: For the most part we've been doing a pretty good
- 16:38Speaker 14: job in front of goalies I think. Maybe we could
- 16:41Speaker 14: get a little tougher.
- 16:42Speaker 6: In front of our own.
- 16:43Speaker 14: I know the Edmonton game kind of got away with us.
- 16:45Speaker 14: Got away from us a little bit. We were letting
- 16:47Speaker 14: them get a little too close in and That's not
- 16:50Speaker 14: always easy. You've got to kind of predict that before
- 16:52Speaker 14: there's people coming to your own net. But, yeah, I
- 16:56Speaker 14: think having our guys go to their net, we're doing
- 17:00Speaker 14: a really good job right now shooting pucks. It's really
- 17:02Speaker 14: nice to see guys are being selfless. I mean, Ryder's
- 17:06Speaker 14: goal last night is a perfect example of just taking
- 17:09Speaker 14: the opportunity that's given and throwing something at it and
- 17:11Speaker 14: see what happens. So that's really good to see that
- 17:16Speaker 14: we're not being necessarily selfish, but... you know, when you're
- 17:21Speaker 14: playing that way, everyone's on the same page. Everyone will
- 17:23Speaker 14: get their chances and their looks, and a lot of
- 17:25Speaker 14: good things are coming from it.
- 17:27Speaker 13: More of Freddy Gaudreau here from the Kraken dressing room
- 17:29Speaker 13: this morning where we talked about confidence, and that can
- 17:31Speaker 13: certainly be big for momentum, but he also said confidence
- 17:35Speaker 13: and momentum come with a pretty measured approach.
- 17:38Speaker 15: I think we just were focused on the game at
- 17:41Speaker 15: a time. It's the most cliche thing we always say
- 17:44Speaker 15: in the locker room, but that's the truth, and It
- 17:47Speaker 15: felt that way, a day-to-day mindset for the whole camp,
- 17:50Speaker 15: which I think brought a lot of energy to our group,
- 17:54Speaker 15: a lot of positivity, and yeah, I think we were
- 17:58Speaker 15: able to surf that same way to start the season
- 18:01Speaker 15: so far, and that's the mindset going forward.
- 18:04Speaker 13: We heard a lot about with camp being so short
- 18:06Speaker 13: on the emphasis of making plays and making them in
- 18:10Speaker 13: tight spaces. What's been your assessment as far as how
- 18:13Speaker 13: this team has come along with playmaking the first few games?
- 18:15Speaker 15: Well, yeah, I think, you know, playmaking also is a
- 18:19Speaker 15: bit of kind of getting used to you're playing with also.
- 18:24Speaker 15: The more you find yourself with the same guys on
- 18:28Speaker 15: the ice, the more you start thinking the same way.
- 18:30Speaker 15: And I feel like we have some solid lines that
- 18:32Speaker 15: now are feeling that way. You know, there's been a
- 18:37Speaker 15: lot of really nice plays so far. I can think
- 18:41Speaker 15: of Sammo's goal last game. His second one is a
- 18:45Speaker 15: you know, a combination of two really nice passes that
- 18:49Speaker 15: were just, it felt like the guys knew where the
- 18:51Speaker 15: other one was, and yeah, it's kind of a chemistry thing,
- 18:55Speaker 15: and it's fun to see that throughout the whole lineup,
- 18:59Speaker 15: it feels like guys are finding each other more and more.
- 19:02Speaker 13: James is here to note in the Kraken lineup for tonight,
- 19:05Speaker 13: Ben Myers up front, he is in, K.L. Fleury is
- 19:07Speaker 13: also in on defense, meaning Villalata Vinen and Curtis Douglas
- 19:11Speaker 13: will take a seat here for this evening. We'll come
- 19:13Speaker 13: back in a bit and take a look at Vegas
- 19:15Speaker 13: after this. You're listening to the Global Credit Union Kraken

- 20:19Speaker 6: Now back to Seattle.
- 20:20Speaker 17: Kraken Hockey on the Kraken Audio Network.
- 20:23Speaker 13: Kraken in Vegas about to drop the puck in about
- 20:26Speaker 13: 26 minutes. And time to ask, what are the odds?
- 20:28Speaker 13: That's brought to you by the Evergreen Council on Problem Gambling.

- 20:59Speaker 13: Again, Mike Benton with you. Back by the Coors Light
- 21:00Speaker 13: landing in section 20. And time now for a look
- 21:03Speaker 13: at Vegas where... They went through a little bit of chaos.
- 21:06Speaker 4: No surprise.
- 21:07Speaker 13: That begins with their coaching staff with John Tortorella out
- 21:09Speaker 13: after roughly a cup of coffee and after a loss
- 21:12Speaker 13: in the Stanley Cup final with Ryan Craig then jumping in,
- 21:15Speaker 13: even after they won a chaotic Pacific Division at 95
- 21:19Speaker 13: points and got a Western Conference championship out of the deal.
- 21:23Speaker 4: But Ryan Craig is in, who is.
- 21:25Speaker 13: longtime pro center previously coaching in the American Hockey League
- 21:29Speaker 13: and back again now after a 90-point season he had
- 21:32Speaker 13: last year with their AHL affiliate in Henderson one big
- 21:36Speaker 13: loss for them Pavel Dorofeev 33 goals last two years
- 21:40Speaker 13: on the power play 72 in total Vegas shipping him
- 21:44Speaker 13: out to the New York Rangers and the question bears
- 21:48Speaker 13: what can they do in the absence of Dorofeev one
- 21:51Speaker 13: of them is Kavitra Olofsson make a difference. He was
- 21:55Speaker 13: signed out of free agency back on July 2nd. He
- 21:57Speaker 13: had 13 goals last year. Plus also Vegas banking on
- 22:00Speaker 13: the health of William Carlson and Mark Stone who missed
- 22:03Speaker 13: a combined 90 games last season. That could be big
- 22:07Speaker 13: for them. Plus also Craig saying that he plans to
- 22:09Speaker 13: get the defense more involved. the offense and that means
- 22:13Speaker 13: putting one puck mover on each defensive pair plus also
- 22:16Speaker 13: the potential turning Jack Eichel into a shooter on the
- 22:19Speaker 13: power play could reap some dividends but as far as
- 22:22Speaker 13: Vegas is concerned health is a big one and so
- 22:25Speaker 13: far they're 100% healthy in three games however it is
- 22:29Speaker 13: a very very young season more on Eichel who said
- 22:33Speaker 13: he sees a challenge in facing the Kraken this evening
- 22:35Speaker 13: but at this time of year it is more about
- 22:38Speaker 13: fine-tuning Vegas's own.
- 22:39Speaker 5: Game Well I mean we've played Seattle right before in
- 22:42Speaker 5: the past and last season and you know you're familiar
- 22:46Speaker 5: with a lot of their players and the way they
- 22:49Speaker 5: want to play and kind of the style of which
- 22:51Speaker 5: they play so I think with the information there you're
- 22:57Speaker 5: able to prepare for them a bit and then you
- 22:59Speaker 5: just try and I mean you try and prepare every
- 23:01Speaker 5: game you know pretty similarly obviously some teams are going
- 23:03Speaker 5: to be doing different things from you know a systematical
- 23:06Speaker 5: standpoint but At this point of the year, you're trying
- 23:10Speaker 5: to come out and instill what you're trying to do
- 23:13Speaker 5: in the game and play your game and play it
- 23:18Speaker 5: better than they do. They've been playing well so far
- 23:23Speaker 5: to start the season, and it should be a good
- 23:25Speaker 5: test for us tonight.
- 23:26Speaker 13: Michaels off to a hot start with six points in
- 23:28Speaker 13: his first three games. He had a helper in the
- 23:31Speaker 13: 3-2 win for Vegas over the Canucks back on Saturday.
- 23:34Speaker 13: He is our top storyline in this one. Leading scorer
- 23:37Speaker 13: last season off a 90-point campaign, and he has been
- 23:41Speaker 13: tough to handle on the Kraken side with 21 points,
- 23:43Speaker 13: 15 games head-to-head. He'll play with Ivan Barbashev and Mark Stone.
- 23:49Speaker 13: Second story line, it is pupil versus teacher, and that
- 23:52Speaker 13: means Mitch Marner as pupil against Lane Lambert, the teacher.
- 23:56Speaker 13: The two were, of course, on the same bench back
- 23:58Speaker 13: in Toronto a couple of years ago, and Marner has
- 24:00Speaker 13: also given the Kraken a tough time as well with
- 24:03Speaker 13: 18 points in 12 games head-to-head. Only once has he
- 24:08Speaker 13: been held scoreless in this matchup. That was October 11th
- 24:11Speaker 13: of last season, so certainly a big challenge here for
- 24:15Speaker 13: Lane Lambert to keep Mitch Marner ahead. off the board,
- 24:18Speaker 13: and Marner looks like we'll play with Brett Howden and
- 24:21Speaker 13: William Carlson. Carter Hart going to be in net here
- 24:23Speaker 13: for Vegas. Meanwhile, we'll take a break. Everett and Al
- 24:26Speaker 13: back here with the three keys after this. You're listening
- 24:28Speaker 13: to the Global Credit Union, Kraken Audio Network.

- 25:09Speaker 18: Light was born into. Honest and real. Brewed in the Rockies.
- 25:14Speaker 18: Cold filtered, cold lagered, straight from the mountain refreshment. Because
- 25:19Speaker 18: when you reach for a beer, you don't want kind
- 25:21Speaker 18: of cold. You want this kind of cold. Coors Light.

- 26:31Speaker 6: This is Brandon Montour for the Seattle Kraken.
- 26:34Speaker 1: Thanks for listening to Kraken Hockey on the Kraken Audio Network.
- 26:38Speaker 2: We're back inside of Climate Pledge Arena. Big Al Kaniski
- 26:41Speaker 2: between the benches tonight. Everett Fitzhugh back upstairs cracking and
- 26:44Speaker 2: the Golden Knights for the first four meetings on the season.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Cracking two and one to start the year with a
- 26:51Speaker 2: pair of 6-1 wins, both against the Calgary Flames partner.
- 26:56Speaker 2: Vegas is a little bit different than Calgary, more similar
- 26:59Speaker 2: probably to Edmonton, which was a hard fought 3-1 loss
- 27:03Speaker 2: for Seattle.
- 27:04Speaker 3: What are gonna be some things the Kraken have.
- 27:06Speaker 2: To do here tonight to pick up their fourth consecutive
- 27:10Speaker 2: home win and fifth in their last six games at
- 27:13Speaker 2: home against Vegas?
- 27:14Speaker 7: Well, the first one is what I talked about a
- 27:16Speaker 7: little bit earlier in the pregame. That's quick defensive transitions.
- 27:20Speaker 7: The Kraken need to get from defense to offense faster
- 27:22Speaker 7: than a Vegas casino changes the odds. With the puck,
- 27:26Speaker 7: make the first pass and attack before the Golden Knights
- 27:28Speaker 7: can set up their velvet rope defense. No sightseeing, no
- 27:32Speaker 7: scenic routes, no waiting for a cab. Just clean exits
- 27:35Speaker 7: and immediate pressure. If Seattle turns turnovers into chances, Vegas
- 27:40Speaker 7: may want to check out of the Kraken hotel early. Second.
- 27:44Speaker 7: Win key face-offs. Tonight's face-offs are where the house edge
- 27:48Speaker 7: gets decided. The Kraken need to win the important draws,
- 27:51Speaker 7: especially in the defensive and offensive zones, because losing face-offs
- 27:55Speaker 7: to Vegas is like giving a blackjack deal your wallet.
- 27:58Speaker 7: Get the puck possession first, get it out clean, and
- 28:01Speaker 7: make the Golden Knights chase instead of dictate. Control the dot,
- 28:05Speaker 7: control the chaos. And then third, Joey Decord leads. Joey
- 28:10Speaker 7: Decord needs to be calm, sharp, and just annoying enough
- 28:13Speaker 7: to ruin Vegas' evening. The Golden Knights will look for traffic, rebounds,
- 28:17Speaker 7: and second chances, so Joey has to own the crease
- 28:20Speaker 7: and make the first save count. If he gives Seattle
- 28:23Speaker 7: confidence behind him, the Kraken will play fast and aggressive
- 28:26Speaker 7: in front of him. Vegas brought the neon, now Joey
- 28:29Speaker 7: needs to bring the blackout. So in sum, the Kraken's
- 28:32Speaker 7: recipe is simple. Transition cleanly, win the big face-offs, and
- 28:37Speaker 7: let Joey DeCord slam the door like a bouncer who's
- 28:39Speaker 7: seen enough. Seattle cannot give away pucks like comped rooms
- 28:43Speaker 7: at the Flamingo Hotel, or give these Vegas players extra
- 28:46Speaker 7: chances like Bob Barker, because the Golden Knights already have
- 28:49Speaker 7: enough casino energy without the free chips. Play fast, play nasty,
- 28:53Speaker 7: and make the deep a terrible environment To place a
- 28:56Speaker 7: bet tonight.
- 28:57Speaker 3: Oh, you're on one tonight.
- 28:59Speaker 4: I love that.
- 29:00Speaker 3: Listen, I don't care how cheap the room is.
- 29:01Speaker 2: I don't know if I'm staying at the Flamengo Hotel.
- 29:03Speaker 5: No, no, no.
- 29:04Speaker 7: They're just giving those ropes away.
- 29:06Speaker 4: Just giving them away.
- 29:07Speaker 2: I want to start from the net out tonight here
- 29:10Speaker 2: with Joey Decord. We've seen three very strong goaltending performances.
- 29:15Speaker 2: Two from Decord, one from Grubauer, albeit defensively. In a
- 29:19Speaker 2: losing effort, I think you and I have talked quite
- 29:21Speaker 2: a bit about trying to find that number one.
- 29:25Speaker 3: Goaltender to take over the spot.
- 29:27Speaker 2: What have you seen, again, three game sample size, what
- 29:31Speaker 2: have you seen from both Grubauer and DeCord, and who
- 29:35Speaker 2: do you feel maybe has a slight edge so far,
- 29:38Speaker 2: or does anyone have the edge in goal this year?
- 29:40Speaker 7: Well I'll give I'll say that this is a good
- 29:42Speaker 7: goaltending coach problem in that so far small sample size
- 29:45Speaker 7: you've got two goaltenders that are playing really well but
- 29:47Speaker 7: tonight Joey DeCord's in net and among goaltenders in the
- 29:50Speaker 7: league right now with two or more wins He's at
- 29:52Speaker 7: the top with 966 save percentage and a goals against
- 29:56Speaker 7: average of 1. But as I mentioned earlier, he's 15th
- 29:59Speaker 7: with 58 shots against, so his team's doing a good
- 30:02Speaker 7: job blocking shots for him.
- 30:03Speaker 4: But he's also one of three goaltenders that have a
- 30:05Speaker 4: point this season.
- 30:07Speaker 5: So.
- 30:08Speaker 3: I've got to give the.
- 30:11Speaker 4: Side to him a little bit.
- 30:12Speaker 7: Just because he's played an extra game, you're going to
- 30:14Speaker 7: see him have a big test here tonight. Ask me
- 30:17Speaker 7: in two and a half hours, maybe I change my opinion.
- 30:19Speaker 2: We talk a lot about special teams, power play, penalty kill.
- 30:22Speaker 2: Kraken giving up a power play goal the other night
- 30:25Speaker 2: to the Calgary Flames. Did not get a power play
- 30:27Speaker 2: themselves in that game. They were 3-3.
- 30:31Speaker 3: On the PK in Edmonton, 1-2.
- 30:34Speaker 2: And then going back to Calgary, they scored a beautiful
- 30:36Speaker 2: goal on their first power play, then went 0 for
- 30:39Speaker 2: 4 the rest of the way against the Vegas Golden Knights. PK-wise,
- 30:44Speaker 2: you've got two stars in Eichel and Marner, very much
- 30:47Speaker 2: like Dreisaitl and McDavid and Edmonton. They're going to load
- 30:50Speaker 2: up that top power play unit. How crucial will tonight
- 30:53Speaker 2: be in terms of staying out of the box?
- 30:55Speaker 7: Well, discipline's going to be huge, but rarely do you
- 30:57Speaker 7: get out of a game clean where you don't have
- 30:59Speaker 7: to kill a penalty often. After last game, the Kraken
- 31:02Speaker 7: entered tonight 17th in the league at 83.3%, killing off
- 31:06Speaker 7: five of six chances. They dropped 12 spots in one
- 31:09Speaker 7: game because they dropped from 100%. So still really good,
- 31:13Speaker 7: but the way you have an excellent penalty kill is
- 31:15Speaker 7: to stay out of the box. But when you do
- 31:17Speaker 7: have to kill penalties, you've got to be aware of
- 31:19Speaker 7: those two gentlemen on the ice because they will burn you.
- 31:22Speaker 2: What are you looking forward to from calling this game
- 31:24Speaker 2: between the benches tonight? What is Al Koniski going to
- 31:27Speaker 2: be focusing on back down there between the benches?
- 31:31Speaker 7: I'm going to look for the vibe. You know, the
- 31:33Speaker 7: vibe is tough to tell from up top there. I
- 31:35Speaker 7: want to watch the bench after a goal is scored
- 31:37Speaker 7: against this team. I want to watch the bench after they.
- 31:39Speaker 3: Score a goal.
- 31:40Speaker 7: I want to see Joey Decord come over to the
- 31:42Speaker 7: bench after he lets one in. I'm looking for the,
- 31:44Speaker 7: I'm doing the vibe check tonight because, you know, last year, certainly,
- 31:47Speaker 7: you know, after the Olympic break, that vibe dropped considerably.
- 31:50Speaker 7: I want to see the vibes up high here tonight.
- 31:52Speaker 7: You know whose vibe is always high?
- 31:54Speaker 3: Mike Benton!
- 31:55Speaker 2: Mike Benton back on the Coors Light landing, section 20
- 31:58Speaker 2: inside of Climate Pledge Arena.
- 32:00Speaker 3: He's standing by. He's got more for you. Come on out.

- 33:36Speaker 20: Some of life's biggest wins don't come with a scoreboard.
- 33:40Speaker 20: They're found in watching the people we love grow, thrive,
- 33:43Speaker 20: and move forward. At Symmetra Life Insurance Company, We help
- 33:47Speaker 20: you protect your loved ones with retirement solutions, employee benefits,
- 33:51Speaker 20: and life insurance. Because when your team is well cared for,
- 33:55Speaker 20: you can focus on cheering them on.
- 33:59Speaker 6: Symmetra.
- 34:00Speaker 17: Plan well, be well, live well. Official life insurance partner
- 34:04Speaker 17: of the Seattle Kraken.
- 34:17Speaker 13: Puck drop is coming up in a little under 13
- 34:20Speaker 13: minutes right now for the Kraken and Vegas. Mike Benton
- 34:23Speaker 13: again with you, back by the Coors Light landing in
- 34:25Speaker 13: Section 20. We can't wait for Al Koniski between the benches.
- 34:27Speaker 13: That's going to be a work of art. Him down there,
- 34:30Speaker 13: Everett up there.
- 34:31Speaker 4: Meanwhile, here's Lane Lambert with Everett Fitzhugh.
- 34:34Speaker 3: Thanks, Mike.
- 34:35Speaker 2: Another 6-1 win for your guys over Calgary two nights ago.
- 34:38Speaker 2: Very similar output to night one in Calgary. What did
- 34:42Speaker 2: you like about your team's 60-minute game?
- 34:44Speaker 6: I thought.
- 34:46Speaker 21: I like our ability and our willingness to shoot the
- 34:50Speaker 21: puck into the net.
- 34:51Speaker 6: We took advantage of our opportunities. I like that.
- 34:56Speaker 21: We kind of put them on their heels when we
- 34:59Speaker 21: were scoring. I thought that our start was okay and
- 35:02Speaker 21: I thought our goaltender was good. I think I'd like
- 35:07Speaker 21: to see us a little better off the starts so
- 35:11Speaker 21: that Joey doesn't have to make, or Phillip doesn't have
- 35:14Speaker 21: to make save after save before we get going. So
- 35:17Speaker 21: that's kind of a focus for tonight's game. But certainly
- 35:19Speaker 21: there was a lot of things to like.
- 35:21Speaker 6: About the game.
- 35:23Speaker 21: And we're continuing to grow into our structure, some of
- 35:26Speaker 21: our structure thought processes.
- 35:28Speaker 6: Through the neutral zone.
- 35:29Speaker 2: I know it's early, but you want to nip the
- 35:31Speaker 2: bad habits early in the bud when you're looking at
- 35:36Speaker 2: starts and trying to get off to the right foot.
- 35:38Speaker 7: What is it?
- 35:39Speaker 2: Is it something you can tell the guys? Can you
- 35:41Speaker 2: practice getting off to good starts? How does that come
- 35:45Speaker 2: into your game?
- 35:45Speaker 21: Oh, we haven't necessarily, like I say, we haven't necessarily
- 35:48Speaker 21: had what I would call bad starts.
- 35:51Speaker 6: On the other team, actually, they're out on the ice
- 35:53Speaker 6: playing too. So they're involved in the game as well.
- 35:58Speaker 6: It's a tough league, the National Hockey League. To answer
- 36:00Speaker 6: your question, it's just a focus thing. And I think
- 36:04Speaker 6: our guys have been focused. uh you know but things
- 36:07Speaker 6: happen i just.
- 36:08Speaker 21: You know there's certain maybe certain areas certain situations i
- 36:12Speaker 21: thought we put ourselves in penalty trouble in edmonton um
- 36:15Speaker 21: and that's you know something that we don't want to
- 36:18Speaker 21: do 13 14 guys have found their way onto the
- 36:20Speaker 21: score sheet the first three games of the season how
- 36:22Speaker 21: important is that to build confidence and to see everyone
- 36:25Speaker 21: getting their touches and putting up their points early on
- 36:27Speaker 21: yeah i think it's important uh certainly i think that
- 36:30Speaker 21: we have tried to and done a pretty good job of,
- 36:34Speaker 21: you know, distributing our ice.
- 36:36Speaker 6: Time evenly or somewhat evenly.
- 36:39Speaker 21: You know, everybody matters on this hockey team and everybody
- 36:42Speaker 21: has a role and, you know, we want to make
- 36:45Speaker 21: sure that everybody gets involved. So it's nice to see
- 36:47Speaker 21: the score sheet doing that as well.
- 36:49Speaker 2: Mackie Samuskiewicz came as advertised in his second game in
- 36:52Speaker 2: Kraken Colors, two goals in that contest. What does he
- 36:55Speaker 2: bring to this lineup now that you've seen him in
- 36:57Speaker 2: a regular season game? You've been able to coach him
- 36:59Speaker 2: now through preseason and training camp. What has he brought
- 37:02Speaker 2: to this group that you felt was missing the last year?
- 37:06Speaker 21: Well, I just think that, you know, he adds another
- 37:09Speaker 21: element of speed, which we talk about.
- 37:13Speaker 6: We want to be a fast team.
- 37:14Speaker 21: And he's got, you know, obviously he's got some skill
- 37:18Speaker 21: around the net and can shoot the puck.
- 37:20Speaker 6: So certainly he adds an element of offense to our
- 37:23Speaker 6: hockey team. And the other thing he adds is you want.
- 37:26Speaker 21: To watch them play the games the little things that
- 37:28Speaker 21: maybe fans don't appreciate or see. You can tell he's
- 37:33Speaker 21: played in Florida on a team that won a couple
- 37:36Speaker 21: Stanley Cups. And so there's certain things in the game
- 37:40Speaker 21: that can become contagious that you see him doing that
- 37:45Speaker 21: are what I would consider winning hockey plays.
- 37:49Speaker 2: As a coach, do you find yourself leaning on players
- 37:52Speaker 2: like that? Montour, who also won a Cup. Stevenson, who
- 37:55Speaker 2: won with Vegas not too long ago. When you look
- 37:57Speaker 2: at some of these players in the room who've had success,
- 37:59Speaker 2: how much are you leaning on them to have those
- 38:03Speaker 2: good winning habits filter out throughout the rest of the room?
- 38:06Speaker 21: I think it's important to get people in that room
- 38:08Speaker 21: that have had that kind of success as well and
- 38:11Speaker 21: to help push guys along.
- 38:14Speaker 6: There's no question about it. We've got a few of
- 38:16Speaker 6: them on there that have won Stanley Cups.
- 38:19Speaker 21: As far as that's concerned, it's nice to see them
- 38:25Speaker 21: have been in those situations and.
- 38:26Speaker 6: Lead by example.
- 38:28Speaker 2: Very familiar with the Vegas Golden Knights, the second-to-last game
- 38:31Speaker 2: of the season for you guys last year, so still
- 38:34Speaker 2: very fresh. They've got a couple of strong offensive players
- 38:37Speaker 2: in their room, and Jack Eichel and Mitch Marner. What
- 38:40Speaker 2: can the Kraken expect out of them, and how will
- 38:42Speaker 2: this opponent be different from the first two games against
- 38:45Speaker 2: Calgary and even Edmonton?
- 38:48Speaker 21: Well, I mean, there's, you know, our game... Our game
- 38:52Speaker 21: doesn't change. It doesn't matter who we play. There's good
- 38:58Speaker 21: teams that you play every night. Obviously Vegas, like you say,
- 39:02Speaker 21: they have Marner, they have Eichel. There's Hurdle, there's Stone.
- 39:07Speaker 21: The list kind of goes on and on. They play
- 39:10Speaker 21: a little bit of a different brand maybe in terms
- 39:13Speaker 21: of getting to the net and getting bucks to the
- 39:16Speaker 21: net and things like that.
- 39:18Speaker 6: Maybe the game changes a little bit there, but I
- 39:20Speaker 6: want us to keep playing our game.
- 39:22Speaker 4: Big question, Looms.
- 39:23Speaker 13: Can the Kraken play their game and win those battles
- 39:26Speaker 13: at the front of the net?
- 39:27Speaker 4: That's Lane Lambert.
