- 0:27getting through these busy winter months.
- 0:30Yes, and we're coming close to the holidays.
- 0:32We are. What fun, what joy. Get to see your family and enjoy Christmas season. Yes.
- 0:39Grandkids make Christmas worth it. Right. Yes. Yeah. Yeah, definitely.
- 0:44If you don't think you enjoy the holiday, wait till you have grandkids.
- 0:48Yeah, that's fine. I guess I have quite a bit of waiting.
- 0:52Good thing I enjoy it now anyway. There you go.
- 0:56Oh, yeah. You're right. You've got a ways to go. Here's my cards. Okay.
- 1:01I start with a question for you. All right. What character in the Bible is most like you?
- 1:11That's biblical comparison. Yeah. Most like you and why? See, it says why.
- 1:18I would have to say Samson because he is super strong. Oh, yeah.
- 1:24No. So, um, had the eye for the girls.
- 1:30Okay. I don't know. This is tough. It is. Uh,
- 1:35I'm going to think on this one. Okay. I don't think I would.
- 1:38I'm pretty sure I've got mine down.
- 1:41I think I'm most like Peter. Peter? Because he was outspoken.
- 1:45I can be outspoken. And a little bold.
- 1:48There's a couple of times he speaks before he thinks.
- 1:51And I've been known to do that at times.
- 1:55And then some, once in a while, you'll notice in Acts.
- 1:59And then when Paul comes around and talks to him again later on, I think it's Galatians.
- 2:04And Paul has to get him back on task again Because he's sort of wandered off
- 2:10Especially on the subject of,
- 2:13Whether you eat kosher or not So I'm afraid I will confess that I'm most likely Like Peter,
- 2:25Whether it's a good thing or not.
- 2:29Interesting Interesting. Yeah. Well, we'll jump into our questions here for you.
- 2:34Okay. So we'll start with the first one.
- 2:39How does the Lord tell us to handle our finances? Carefully.
- 2:43How about our debts and investments?
- 2:47Yeah, just finances in general. If you go back to the Old Testament,
- 2:51it basically says you don't borrow because in borrowing, you become a slave to the lender.
- 2:59Boy, I wish I could get that one right out of the top of my head It's in the
- 3:03Mosaic Law And I think it's in Leviticus.
- 3:06And so it's one of those things that he'd say You know, take care of your finances
- 3:10But don't be dependent on anybody else In fact, there's quite a nudge To make sure that you have,
- 3:18Got a pretty solid base So that
- 3:21you're able to give to others And not be needing to be given to Right?
- 3:26And to the point that he has a lot more to say to those who are landowners and
- 3:32those who have goods, because there's stipulations as to how when you harvest your field,
- 3:40you need to leave a little bit left behind, right?
- 3:44So those who are less fortunate can come and pick it up.
- 3:49And that would be there. It's as if be successful and be able to share with others. Yeah.
- 3:58And, uh, and don't, yeah, don't be a servant.
- 4:02Uh, yeah, he doesn't, it's, you take care of your servants if you have servants.
- 4:09So I think the nudge is to be financially stable and work really hard at being financially stable.
- 4:17That being said, when Jesus comes on the scene, he's saying,
- 4:21especially Matthew chapter 6 comes to my mind first, don't be a lover of money
- 4:26and pile up your riches in heaven.
- 4:30So that means it's a different mindset. You use all your gifts and abilities for kingdom reasons.
- 4:39Yeah, make money, but money's not the end game.
- 4:43Serving the kingdoms the end game of all your finances so.
- 4:50That's fairly consistent with the Old Testament all God asks is a tithe that's
- 4:5610% that's not bad all right,
- 5:00That's what he asks of your money, but then he wants your whole heart. That's true.
- 5:07I mean, that is the lordship of God.
- 5:10I think we mistake lordship because we think lordship is, okay, yeah, he's my God.
- 5:18Big deal. And basically what Jesus was trying to say is, love the Lord your
- 5:25God with all your heart, not 50%, not 10%, with all your heart.
- 5:30All your soul, all your mind, and Mark would have all your strength.
- 5:36Right, Samson. And then he'd say, the second is like unto it,
- 5:41love your neighbor as yourself.
- 5:43So he puts the lordship of God very high in that economy.
- 5:50So when you talk about economics and finances, finances and economics are a
- 5:55way to get things done in the kingdom.
- 5:57It's needed, it's necessary, but it's not priority.
- 6:01It's secondary to the lordship of Christ, the lordship of God in your life.
- 6:08So it, now, did I answer your question? You did, but I'm a...
- 6:14Circle back around Don. Yeah. I mean, come back to the debts part.
- 6:19Cause yeah. So we're not supposed to make ourselves a slave to the lender,
- 6:22but, um, like when you're buying a house or a farmer with land,
- 6:26I mean, it's, it's not almost impossible not to get a loan. That's right.
- 6:31So like, it's a necessary evil, I guess.
- 6:36Okay. We can't get around without it. Um, and, uh, There's some businesses that
- 6:41operate solely on the amount that they can borrow.
- 6:47That's not exactly what God was telling us to do.
- 6:50But I think at least if we take the Old Testament example seriously,
- 6:56that means don't go over a whole hog into debt, reminding yourself that all
- 7:03that money that you have, that you got from somebody else,
- 7:08not only is their money, but you have to add to them a little bit.
- 7:15And among the Jews, what's interesting is usury was outlawed.
- 7:22You couldn't, you know, if you're a Jew and I'm a Jew, I'd lend you money,
- 7:27but I can't charge you interest.
- 7:31Well, that's not the way our financial system is set up. I go down to the bank
- 7:35and they make sure that I pay interest.
- 7:37Yeah, nobody would want to lend money. Nobody would want to lend money.
- 7:40So that probably lowered the banking system among the Jews, you know, that being the case.
- 7:51Today, it's different. Everything's based on what you're able to get in a loan.
- 8:03Liquidity, then, is another thing. Yeah, we don't have to get into the whole economics.
- 8:10How did your thing go with your class that you were doing the stock market?
- 8:16Stock market game, it was all right. It wasn't. You didn't win?
- 8:20No, I didn't win. You didn't? Not even for the Hillcrest Bunch,
- 8:24you didn't win. No, somebody else from the church won. Beckett did.
- 8:28Really? Yeah. Our Beckett. For our school. Oh, Beckett. Good deal.
- 8:32He was like sixth in the state, maybe.
- 8:35Are you serious? I don't think so.
- 8:39Beckett, I hope you're watching. God bless you.
- 8:42Okay. Yeah, we had an unfortunate time span because the government was shut down for three weeks.
- 8:50That didn't help us out any, but.
- 8:53Okay. But you learned how a government shutdown affects the stock market. Right.
- 8:58And theoretically it shouldn't, but it does. It does.
- 9:02Yeah. Even a good sneeze of the president can affect his stock market. Right.
- 9:08That's the world we live in. Yep. This might be more of a shorter answer,
- 9:12but I mean, we'll see if you turn it into a long one.
- 9:16But if I turn it into a long one, yeah.
- 9:19Did Mary experience a painful labor with Jesus?
- 9:25I, yeah.
- 9:31I see nothing in scripture that would say, but I'm sure God walked with her through it.
- 9:38All right. I imagine she had the same pain any woman would have with labor.
- 9:44And Jesus, what's interesting is later Jesus talks about a woman in childbirth
- 9:49and uses it as an illustration.
- 9:52Makes me wonder if Mary said, and kid, you know how much labor you have in you.
- 10:00And that might be, that's why Jesus, you know, the oldest of the kids would
- 10:05have heard that and said, okay, or watched his mom with other kids that she
- 10:09was having and understand that there's a lot of pain in childbirth.
- 10:14I would venture to say it was a normal birth and it was painful.
- 10:23But part of the reward is knowing that God was there. This was a heavenly mission,
- 10:29if you will, and God was going to be present in it.
- 10:33Yeah. But probably not painless.
- 10:36Yeah. You wouldn't think so, but you'd think if it was painless,
- 10:40then it'd be maybe written somewhere.
- 10:43I would think that it would stand out that way. Right.
- 10:45And giving birth to the Son of Almighty God would have its own ramifications it's just different,
- 10:54not that it was bigger yeah my mind goes in lots of different ways there but
- 11:00I can't imagine that it would be painless.
- 11:06Yeah. Mainly, you know, part of that is the Genesis 3 account would say that
- 11:12there's going to be pain in childbirth.
- 11:15And so it acknowledges that from the very beginning, first child being born.
- 11:21So I doubt if it was painless. Yeah. That was supposed to be a fast one and
- 11:26I stretched it a bit. That was fun.
- 11:29You got to give some reason for your answer.
- 11:33Oh, yeah. That's true. you can't just say no like because i wouldn't help anybody
- 11:37i guess i could have said no but i yeah i wasn't going for the short answer
- 11:43today i guess yeah yeah all right um in luke 2 51 to 52,
- 11:50why is he capitalized but not all the time oh yeah which maybe you want to say
- 11:58why It also depends on which translation you're using.
- 12:06You're looking at, are you a ESV?
- 12:10I have CSB. Okay, CSB, yeah.
- 12:15And 51, 52, oh yeah.
- 12:19This is just one part I think that was noticed. Well, one of the things we have
- 12:25going on with translators, And CSB does a little better than the NIV.
- 12:29NIV usually just continues to make it a lowercase all the way through.
- 12:35And that being said, it's consistent.
- 12:39Yeah. Doesn't mean it's right. But if you go highercase, that means that you are using it for God.
- 12:48Okay. And...
- 12:52So you have made the assumption that the he, participle, it's a participle,
- 12:57it's not the entire word, it's participle used, is for Jesus.
- 13:04And so the places that they can be absolutely sure that it does reference back to Jesus are.
- 13:10I like the way a CSB does because it capitalizes it. Yeah.
- 13:16If there's any ambiguity that it is Jesus to whom it's talking,
- 13:21then the CSB will go to lowercase.
- 13:24Interesting. Whereas NIV, all of them lowercase.
- 13:28And you sort of go, well, be that way. You're not even going to capitalize it
- 13:34when you know it's Jesus.
- 13:36Right. And that's, yeah. So it's part of the approach of the translator to the text.
- 13:43The texts are the same.
- 13:46CSB, what CSB is using, what NIV is using, the texts are the same.
- 13:51But it's the approach to the translation that made the difference.
- 13:55When CSB is sure that it's talking about Jesus or God, it will be capitalized.
- 14:01The participle, the personal pronoun will be capitalized.
- 14:07Interesting. Yeah. So that makes it a little fuzzy at times,
- 14:11but that's what it is. Yeah. Yeah.
- 14:14Yeah. I like the CSV. It reads nice. It does.
- 14:18But I have my memorization in NIV, and when I go back and forth, it just messes me up.
- 14:26Yeah, it does. I've noticed that several times.
- 14:30Because most of the bio-memory that we do is in NIV. Yeah.
- 14:35All way back when you did. Bible. Oh, yeah. Way back, yeah.
- 14:40Three and a half years. Yeah.
- 14:44Yeah. Do you like the red letter Bibles for Jesus' spoken word?
- 14:50And most of the time they get it right.
- 14:52Most of the time the red letter Bibles do emphasize the exact words Jesus was talking about.
- 14:58And there's actually some Christians, they call them red letter Christians,
- 15:04that only read the red letters.
- 15:07Huh? Believing that what came across the lips of Jesus was more important than
- 15:13any other part of the text.
- 15:17Well, there's certain credence to that. The exception is, if you don't read
- 15:24the black letters, how do you know the context of the red letters? Right.
- 15:27And so then you don't get the rest of the story.
- 15:33So, red letters, fine. I do like to be able to read the Bible in such a way
- 15:38that when I come to a personal statement,
- 15:42like whether it's Jesus talking or Paul talking or Peter talking,
- 15:46I realize that is somebody verbally communicating.
- 15:51That means it probably stands a little higher than the rest of the text because
- 15:56it's their words, what they actually said.
- 15:59So I like to read the Bible that
- 16:01way so that I can sort of be in the conversation, I guess, as a listener.
- 16:07I like that. I mean, And to me, it makes scripture more exciting to know that it was spoken.
- 16:15Yeah. Yeah. So, red letter? Yeah, that's all right.
- 16:20It really doesn't have to be red letter for me to. If it was just red letters,
- 16:24would you know that Jesus fed 5,000 people? Not all the time.
- 16:27No. Yeah. 5,000 wouldn't be in there because he didn't say, I am going to feed
- 16:325,000 people. No, that's not there. Right.
- 16:35Yeah. He'll say, no, what do you have? and then he'll and it doesn't say the
- 16:41words that he said when he prayed for it we don't have that recorded right,
- 16:47so yeah it's yeah I mean I wouldn't limit myself to a red letter text mm-hmm.
- 16:53I won't beat you up if you do. So you said, you mentioned sometimes if it's
- 17:00a red letter Bible, then some of the stuff that's red shouldn't be red or stuff that.
- 17:06The red should be red, but you should read the black with context to the red.
- 17:11Otherwise, like you said, you gave a really good illustration, the feeding of 5,000.
- 17:17Jesus never said he fed 5,000. But the text behind it does, and it describes
- 17:23the boy and the two loaves and,
- 17:26no, two fish and five loaves and the 5,000 people.
- 17:34You don't get any of those details if you just read the red. Mm-hmm.
- 17:39Yeah, but it's a way of doing things. I'm just glad when people finally get
- 17:45in the Word. Yeah. And maybe memorize it once in a while.
- 17:48Yeah, red letters can be a discussion later down the road, but. You're upside. Okay.
- 17:54As long as we don't need it right now, we're good.
- 17:59I need bigger ones, I guess.
- 18:04Yeah. What are the pants called? What was the name that you always mention?
- 18:10Oh, barn door britches. Those have big enough pockets? No. No,
- 18:15no. No, they don't have big enough pockets.
- 18:19Can verify that. Yeah. I was thinking about your first question for me.
- 18:24Yes. And I do not have anything.
- 18:27I have mental block right now. Mental block? Yeah. Well.
- 18:31I don't know if I know myself well enough or some of the other characters in
- 18:37the Bible quite well enough. But did anything come to mind for you about, about.
- 18:44Well, it's had a little thought of Gideon.
- 18:47You know, you were sort of Gideon when I called you to this and said, what?
- 18:52Will you do this? Well, I'll try. Yeah. We'll give it a try.
- 18:56And so you sort of Gideon, you didn't put a sheep's thing out though.
- 19:01That's true. I didn't. You didn't put a fleece out.
- 19:03So you're, you're probably a little above Gideon, you know, he used that fleece more than once.
- 19:08To get the idea, are you really calling me this, God? Yeah.
- 19:14But that's one. There's a, yeah.
- 19:18I guess I hadn't thought about it for you, but that Gideon thing came right
- 19:22away. I just wonder if there was anything came to mind and, yeah.
- 19:28Awesome what came yeah cool yeah
