- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, cancel culture is targeting Ed Sheeran over the backlash
- 0:04Speaker 1: surrounding Macklemore's exit from his tour. The rapper was kicked
- 0:07Speaker 1: off the gig after he chanted Free Palestine and sang
- 0:10Speaker 1: an anti-Israel song when he opened for Ed Sheeran earlier
- 0:13Speaker 1: this month. The left is now rallying behind Macklemore, and
- 0:18Speaker 1: Sheeran is bearing the backlash. Some radio stations are refusing
- 0:22Speaker 1: to play Sheeran's music, with one Irish station saying, quote,
- 0:25Speaker 1: In light of the strength of feeling expressed by our
- 0:27Speaker 1: listeners and the decisions taken by Irish artists involved in
- 0:31Speaker 1: the tour, we believe removing Ed Sheeran's music from our
- 0:34Speaker 1: playlist is the appropriate decision for classic hits radio at
- 0:38Speaker 1: this time. Anti-Israel groups are saying they will protest Shirin's
- 0:42Speaker 1: concerts now, starting with his next one tomorrow in Philadelphia.
- 0:47Speaker 1: One flyer they posted online reads this way. Gaza is
- 0:50Speaker 1: our compass. Billionaires, Zionists and warmongers out of Philly. Sharon
- 0:56Speaker 1: is defending what he calls an apolitical position in all
- 0:59Speaker 1: of this, saying, quote, I am not complicit.
- 1:02Speaker 2: I have my.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Personal views on this devastating conflict. Just because I choose
- 1:06Speaker 1: not to speak publicly, it doesn't mean I don't have
- 1:09Speaker 1: them and it doesn't mean I don't care.
- 1:11Speaker 2: End of quote.
- 1:12Speaker 1: But we haven't seen the same outrage around the rapper Macklemore.
- 1:16Speaker 1: who has been accused of anti-Semitism in the past, including
- 1:20Speaker 1: when he performed wearing a fake black wig, beard and
- 1:23Speaker 1: prosthetic hook nose back in 2014. Of course, the backlash
- 1:28Speaker 1: on that was that he was trying to look Jewish
- 1:30Speaker 1: on stage and spewing things. Anti-Defamation League ADL CEO Jonathan
- 1:36Speaker 1: Greenblatt is concerned about the solidarity around Macklemore. Posted this, quote,
- 1:41Speaker 1: For years, Macklemore has pushed anti-Semitic tropes and demonized.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Israel and Israelis.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Now he certainly has the First Amendment right to speak
- 1:49Speaker 1: out and express his views. But demonizing Jews and Israelis
- 1:53Speaker 1: shouldn't be rewarded.
- 1:54Speaker 3: End of quote there.
- 1:56Speaker 4: Alicia. This is one of those stories. We cover a
- 1:58Speaker 4: lot of stories. Every now and then there's some, I
- 2:00Speaker 4: don't know about you guys, where I'll be talking to
- 2:02Speaker 4: myself about it when I'm not even at work because
- 2:04Speaker 4: I'm so frustrated how it continues to grow. This is
- 2:08Speaker 4: that story to me because it just keeps getting bigger
- 2:11Speaker 4: and it seems like for no reason. But also, we
- 2:13Speaker 4: just got done talking about the Lindsay Clancy holdout juror,
- 2:17Speaker 4: a man who was trying to do his job. We're
- 2:18Speaker 4: talking about Ed Sheeran. A man who's trying to do
- 2:21Speaker 4: his job. And what is happening in society to me
- 2:24Speaker 4: is so concerning because the mob comes after people who
- 2:28Speaker 4: are just trying to do the job inside the courtroom,
- 2:31Speaker 4: inside the concert venue. And this has to do with
- 2:34Speaker 4: things that are going on outside the venue. And it
- 2:37Speaker 4: grows and they try to cancel people because of it.
- 2:39Speaker 4: And it's just so frustrating.
- 2:41Speaker 1: I think about this and the business aspect of it.
- 2:44Speaker 1: And so I come to you with this point. Somebody
- 2:47Speaker 1: on his team, if not Ed Sheeran, should have known
- 2:49Speaker 1: what Macklemore had been saying. He hasn't come out with
- 2:51Speaker 1: any new music that I know of, and he's got
- 2:53Speaker 1: a generation of people who now don't know his music.
- 2:57Speaker 1: So what is the bonus of handling it this way,
- 2:59Speaker 1: kicking him off the tour, letting it get to this point?
- 3:02Speaker 2: Well, Ed Sheeran didn't kick him off the tour. People
- 3:06Speaker 2: that own the venue said you're not welcome.
- 3:07Speaker 1: He put him on the tour, though.
- 3:08Speaker 3: That's right.
- 3:09Speaker 2: And there should have been a lot more due diligence
- 3:11Speaker 2: when you're going to bring people. My mother used to
- 3:14Speaker 2: say you're guilty if you associate with the wrong people.
- 3:16Speaker 2: You are who you associate with. I think that was
- 3:18Speaker 2: the mistake. The problem that I have, more than anything,
- 3:21Speaker 2: is that we've gone from we can have discourse and
- 3:24Speaker 2: have respect to now I need to know what you think.
- 3:27Speaker 2: And if you don't tell me what you think and
- 3:29Speaker 2: you don't publicly say it, You're a bad person. Do
- 3:32Speaker 2: I have to talk about Jesus? Do I have to
- 3:33Speaker 2: talk about my wife? Do I have to talk about
- 3:35Speaker 2: anything else? And if I don't, am I now an outcast?
- 3:39Speaker 2: When it comes to business, what CEOs have learned, and
- 3:41Speaker 2: I learned a hard lesson myself, when I voiced my
- 3:44Speaker 2: opinion to my consumers outside of my business, it cost
- 3:48Speaker 2: me a lot of money. I learned to zip it.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Is that why they're now, because you hear Robert Kraft
- 3:53Speaker 1: and even Ed Sheeran, they want to take portions of
- 3:56Speaker 1: the proceeds from the tour, write millions of dollars in checks.
- 3:59Speaker 1: I don't know if that fixes it, because now you've
- 4:01Speaker 1: got a problem selling your records or no?
- 4:02Speaker 2: It feels like you're trying to mitigate something as opposed
- 4:05Speaker 2: to just sticking to your position and moving on.
- 4:08Speaker 4: Kayleigh?
- 4:09Speaker 3: Yeah, it used to be in this country, if you
- 4:11Speaker 3: were in Hollywood, you got canceled if you put forward
- 4:14Speaker 3: a right-wing viewpoint. Now you get canceled if you're just apolitical.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Now you get canceled if you don't have leftist viewpoints.
- 4:21Speaker 3: And we don't really know what Ed Sheeran thinks. We
- 4:23Speaker 3: do know he said, I have my personal views on
- 4:25Speaker 3: this devastating conflict. Just because I do not share them
- 4:28Speaker 3: publicly doesn't mean I don't have them. But he doesn't
- 4:30Speaker 3: want to share them publicly. And now you have people
- 4:32Speaker 3: wanting to cancel this man. It is ridiculous. And I
- 4:35Speaker 3: am also besides myself when I think about Macklemore and
- 4:38Speaker 3: the examples you put up. He clearly spends a lot
- 4:40Speaker 3: of time thinking about Jewish people, a lot of time,
- 4:43Speaker 3: I'm left to surmise, based on what you put up.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Has he ever taken the time to think about the
- 4:47Speaker 3: hostages on October 7th? Just a few examples, Avinatan Orr,
- 4:51Speaker 3: who tried to escape captivity. He was handcuffed to the
- 4:55Speaker 3: bars of a cage that was the size of a mattress.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Has Macklemore ever thought about Yosem Ohana? Seven men were
- 5:02Speaker 3: put in a pit. only allowed to lean against the
- 5:05Speaker 3: wall while standing, lacking oxygen. Have they thought about Kafir Bibas,
- 5:10Speaker 3: the little babies, the infant who was strangled? Have Macklemore
- 5:14Speaker 3: ever given any thought to that? He thinks a lot
- 5:16Speaker 3: about this conflict, but I would really love to know
- 5:18Speaker 3: if he's seen the footage from October 7th. I'm left
- 5:20Speaker 3: to believe he has not, or the worst option is
- 5:22Speaker 3: he just doesn't seem to care.
- 5:24Speaker 1: And when he says free Palestine, can he find Gaza
- 5:26Speaker 1: on a map?
- 5:27Speaker 3: Another great question.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Not meaning it to be funny.
- 5:29Speaker 2: But the costume that he had on was pretty.
- 5:32Speaker 5: Disgusting.
- 5:32Speaker 3: I mean, it was pretty.
- 5:33Speaker 2: It was really bad.
- 5:35Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:35Speaker 2: And it wasn't hidden.
- 5:36Speaker 1: And where was the uproar over that, by the way?
- 5:38Speaker 3: I didn't see it before.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Like, this gets it, but where is the uproar over
- 5:42Speaker 1: anti-Semitic acts and speech?
- 5:44Speaker 5: Well, that costume was from 2014, so the fact that
- 5:47Speaker 5: they knew that that had happened back in 2014, and
- 5:50Speaker 5: what I found interesting was if you actually listened to
- 5:53Speaker 5: all of Macklemore's comments that day... He talked about how
- 5:56Speaker 5: he feels about Palestine and genocide and all these things.
- 5:59Speaker 5: And then he said, and love to my Israeli and
- 6:02Speaker 5: Jewish brothers and sisters. And so he tried to move
- 6:06Speaker 5: away from that other image from 2014 because he knew
- 6:09Speaker 5: back then that was a problem. And it's very hard
- 6:12Speaker 5: to say I'm sending you love after knowing that he
- 6:15Speaker 5: put that image out there.
- 6:16Speaker 4: Right.
- 6:16Speaker 5: That's damage control. I think that's not the way he
- 6:19Speaker 5: truly believes. And so I think that's something that we
- 6:21Speaker 5: have to look at. And I think all of these
- 6:23Speaker 5: artists should learn something from Dolly Parton, right? Dolly Parton said,
- 6:26Speaker 5: I don't put my views out there. I have them,
- 6:29Speaker 5: but I don't put them out there. And beloved by all.
- 6:32Speaker 5: And so I think that there needs to be a
- 6:34Speaker 5: shift back to people just going for enjoyment, going to
- 6:38Speaker 5: be entertained. whether it's athletics, whether it's concerts, whether it's
- 6:45Speaker 5: anything that has to do with things that are not political.
- 6:47Speaker 5: But our world has become politicized in every single way.
- 6:51Speaker 5: And now the fact that, like you said, Kayleigh, we
- 6:54Speaker 5: would cancel people for certain reasons, and now you're being
- 6:56Speaker 5: canceled for not taking a position, it's absolutely crazy. And
- 7:01Speaker 5: a person who shouldn't have to take a position, and
- 7:03Speaker 5: the radios not playing his music... I mean, that is just.
- 7:07Speaker 1: That's a tough bottom line right there.
- 7:10Speaker 2: But I don't want to hear it even if I
- 7:11Speaker 2: agree with what they say. I don't want to hear
- 7:13Speaker 2: it on either case. I don't need to hear it.
- 7:15Speaker 2: I just want you to sing or do whatever.
- 7:16Speaker 5: I agree with you 100%. Don't take a concert and
- 7:19Speaker 5: turn it into a political rally. You are going to
- 7:21Speaker 5: listen to music. You do not need to know what
- 7:24Speaker 5: people's positions are on anything, frankly.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Well, one of the things that we have in women's sports,
- 7:29Speaker 1: because you mentioned athletics, you're seeing some of that, the
- 7:32Speaker 1: politics and the stands there, because the actual sport itself,
- 7:35Speaker 1: the WNBA, is at the heat of the political argument
- 7:38Speaker 1: right now. I mean, it gets complicated. This, though, 2014,
- 7:41Speaker 1: that's a lot of receipts to go back. Again, I ask,
- 7:45Speaker 1: how did Macklemore get on Ed Sheeran's tour?
- 7:48Speaker 2: Who made that decision?
- 7:49Speaker 5: That's a good question.
- 7:51Speaker 2: All right.
- 7:51Speaker 1: An article in a left-wing magazine claims women can be
- 7:55Speaker 1: kind of pregnant or a little bit pregnant. So if
- 7:58Speaker 1: liberals cannot define what a woman is, are they surprised
- 8:01Speaker 1: that they can't define what pregnant is?
