- 1:28Speaker 1: such as Jessica Jones, The Unbreakable, Kimmy Schmidt.
- 1:31Speaker 3: Oh, Harlem. You know, Harlem was one of my favorite shows.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Screw a Bouncer on that show, as well as Orange
- 1:38Speaker 1: Is a New Black and many others.
- 1:39Speaker 3: So welcome back to four All Nerds. Mister Chris Lambert,
- 1:43Speaker 3: thanks for having me.
- 1:44Speaker 6: It's your boy aka cls Move aka not So Slim
- 1:48Speaker 6: Delta aka.
- 1:50Speaker 4: Try and Man man trying man.
- 1:54Speaker 7: Yeah, I'm trying.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Man, No got I love the not So Slim like
- 2:00Speaker 1: that that.
- 2:01Speaker 5: That's incredible, big try trying Man is also pretty great, though,
- 2:07Speaker 5: I'm trying man.
- 2:08Speaker 4: It's all you know.
- 2:09Speaker 5: That'sn't great. You know you got your catchphrase built into
- 2:12Speaker 5: your name.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I love the two centers.
- 2:17Speaker 4: I appreciate.
- 2:18Speaker 6: I told you all the last time I was on here,
- 2:20Speaker 6: wire to Wire sixteen knomsm.
- 2:24Speaker 4: Now we'll see.
- 2:28Speaker 1: It is christ Do you have fate that they're gonna win?
- 2:32Speaker 7: Yeah, they'll win. You know I was surprised.
- 2:34Speaker 6: I thought, you know, I think when the last time
- 2:36Speaker 6: I was on No we did Iron iron Heart, But
- 2:40Speaker 6: first time I felt like Delroy was going to be
- 2:44Speaker 6: the only acting awards. So I was pleasantly surprised that won.
- 2:48Speaker 6: Me and Michael B. Jordan got some love. But my
- 2:52Speaker 6: main concern is, I know the technical they'll probably win
- 2:56Speaker 6: a lot of technical I feel like Uhler is gonna
- 3:00Speaker 6: split either Best Director or Best Film with with uh
- 3:08Speaker 6: pt Anderson. I want, I just want, like right, my
- 3:16Speaker 6: main thing is one and Ryan Cooper to get like
- 3:18Speaker 6: some hardware like writing or something like that, So writing
- 3:23Speaker 6: or Best Director, but either way he'll be back.
- 3:28Speaker 5: I don't even think it's close, you know, when it
- 3:31Speaker 5: comes to best directors, and that's what and I don't.
- 3:35Speaker 5: I don't not Pt for his directorial capabilities. I think
- 3:40Speaker 5: he's a great director, but I do not think that
- 3:42Speaker 5: one battle after another is even in the same category
- 3:46Speaker 5: when it comes to centers to when even when you're
- 3:49Speaker 5: just talking about technical directing. Like I was telling somebody
- 3:53Speaker 5: this the other day from Sinners opening shot of showing
- 3:56Speaker 5: Michael B. Jordan handing a cigarette to Michael B. Jordan's
- 4:00Speaker 5: it's something that you just don't see in those type
- 4:02Speaker 5: of films. Whenever you see Twins and stuff that is
- 4:05Speaker 5: right away it's like we are stunting on you hoes there,
- 4:09Speaker 5: and it's a moving shot. There's so much going into it,
- 4:12Speaker 5: you know, it's a moving dolly shot that's dolling in
- 4:14Speaker 5: on them as they're doing it. There's so much happening
- 4:17Speaker 5: that it technically has to be done, and like I
- 4:20Speaker 5: was really happy to see. I don't know, Chris, if
- 4:22Speaker 5: you've seen this. There's a video of Matt Damon talking
- 4:25Speaker 5: to Michael B. Jordan about it, and Matt Damon is
- 4:28Speaker 5: basically just gushing over Michael B.
- 4:30Speaker 7: Jordan.
- 4:30Speaker 5: Yeah, so beautiful to see because he's talking about those
- 4:34Speaker 5: technical things that I'm talking about. The coogler and crew
- 4:37Speaker 5: and everyone involved had to do to the utter level
- 4:40Speaker 5: of perfession, and that's what it's Great's in the same category.
- 4:44Speaker 7: No, I like, I know y'all didn't like one bout,
- 4:47Speaker 7: but I liked.
- 4:48Speaker 6: I liked both films, but I feel like, obviously there's
- 4:53Speaker 6: more of a connection to Cinners, because you know, the
- 4:57Speaker 6: more that I thought about it, at least on the
- 4:59Speaker 6: second viewing, I thought like, this is how I felt
- 5:03Speaker 6: when I was about twenty years old and I discovered
- 5:06Speaker 6: August Wilson, where I discovered like, oh as a as
- 5:10Speaker 6: a young black actor, Like oh, this guy's like my uncle,
- 5:13Speaker 6: this guy's like my dad. This you know, this writing,
- 5:16Speaker 6: and I think he painted such a great picture that
- 5:18Speaker 6: it's like, oh, and there's vampires in it. Okay, okay,
- 5:21Speaker 6: you know, like it's, oh, there's this element. So he
- 5:25Speaker 6: I think one of my friend I think Rod might
- 5:27Speaker 6: have said this. I don't want to I don't want
- 5:28Speaker 6: to misquote him, but I felt like he was saying that,
- 5:31Speaker 6: you know, Coopler is like the next Spielberg.
- 5:34Speaker 7: Whatever you take that to, however you want.
- 5:37Speaker 6: He's able to make these crowd pleasing films, popcorn films,
- 5:43Speaker 6: and have like a depth to him, have a heart
- 5:46Speaker 6: to him, have it resonate so much that people are
- 5:50Speaker 6: watching this.
- 5:51Speaker 7: Thing, you know, over and over again.
- 5:53Speaker 6: I have the Steel Book Blu Ray, and I remember
- 5:57Speaker 6: I watched it for the third time at home, and
- 6:03Speaker 6: my mind is just been really, no, I got the
- 6:05Speaker 6: you got the metal.
- 6:06Speaker 3: He's trying to stunt on me.
- 6:07Speaker 4: He's I'm not trying to stump.
- 6:09Speaker 6: I'm not trying to stunt but I mean you got
- 6:10Speaker 6: to show him, so yeah, hey, I did not say that.
- 6:14Speaker 7: I did not say that.
- 6:15Speaker 6: Yeah no, I pre ordered and got it pretty for
- 6:19Speaker 6: a reasonable price, but I.
- 6:22Speaker 7: Think you know.
- 6:22Speaker 6: And then they showed you know, when the shifts are
- 6:25Speaker 6: being made through the aspect ratio with the IMAX, and
- 6:28Speaker 6: I was like, God, this really is brilliant.
- 6:30Speaker 7: It was really.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Brilliant and I didn't imagine that. I remember the first
- 6:34Speaker 1: time that that screening. I had said that to Man.
- 6:37Speaker 1: I was like, did they change the actual ratio? And
- 6:41Speaker 1: he was like, I don't know, Man, maybe tripping, But no, no.
- 6:44Speaker 4: I didn't say that. I knew because I knew what
- 6:45Speaker 4: they were doing because I remember.
- 6:46Speaker 7: What they did.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Remember Racio during the I was like they did.
- 6:51Speaker 7: I was like that, Like I was.
- 6:53Speaker 5: What I was trying to figure out is after my
- 6:55Speaker 5: first watch, I was trying to figure out.
- 6:57Speaker 4: When he was doing it, Like I don't know if
- 6:59Speaker 4: there's row there's.
- 7:00Speaker 5: Reason to it, but it's not like it's not plotted,
- 7:03Speaker 5: you know, it's not it's not like, Okay, we're gonna
- 7:05Speaker 5: do it, you know when there's action, or we're going
- 7:07Speaker 5: to do this when you know it's not like that.
- 7:09Speaker 4: It changes, but like one of.
- 7:11Speaker 5: The dopest ones is when it opens up, when the
- 7:13Speaker 5: fucking doors to the barn opens up, and then the
- 7:17Speaker 5: screen opens up.
- 7:19Speaker 4: And it's like this, nigga.
- 7:26Speaker 1: That's why I saw it four times, and because I
- 7:29Speaker 1: saw it all the you know, when they brought it
- 7:31Speaker 1: back into theaters, went right back to Lincoln Square just
- 7:35Speaker 1: like you did.
- 7:36Speaker 3: So I did seventy million imax each time.
- 7:39Speaker 7: Did you get the film strip?
- 7:41Speaker 1: No?
- 7:41Speaker 4: I did not get the films.
- 7:43Speaker 5: I missed it, but like a week, I think, and
- 7:45Speaker 5: I'd already pre bought my tickets and then they're like, oh,
- 7:47Speaker 5: if you bought your tickets for this week, you get
- 7:49Speaker 5: film script. And Mom was like the day after. I
- 7:51Speaker 5: was like, yeah, they got to figures.
- 7:54Speaker 6: Now did you get did you I did not know?
- 8:01Speaker 5: No?
- 8:01Speaker 7: Yeah, I I am broke, but I didn't get to get.
- 8:04Speaker 4: To answer figures.
- 8:05Speaker 1: I didn't think I was a joke because you got
- 8:07Speaker 1: the metal? Oh did you get the other stuff? Just
- 8:09Speaker 1: like even when it comes to centers and like all
- 8:11Speaker 1: of the memorabilia that they have out, like did you
- 8:13Speaker 1: go I don't know if that was a MC you
- 8:15Speaker 1: get the ten?
- 8:18Speaker 7: No? I got too much junk.
- 8:20Speaker 4: I ain't get none of that. I don't know about that.
- 8:22Speaker 7: They got to come up with action figures and you
- 8:24Speaker 7: figured out bio.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I need like mfarlane.
- 8:32Speaker 5: I don't want hot toys because too expensive. Yeah, too
- 8:35Speaker 5: big or too expensive. I need McFarlane. That would be
- 8:37Speaker 5: a nice you know, McFarlane. I could see doing that.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, Well, obviously we super love Sinners and we'll
- 8:44Speaker 1: love it to the day we die. But we're here
- 8:47Speaker 1: to talk about something else that's amazing in black history,
- 8:51Speaker 1: and that is Chris your upcoming comedy special album, Killing
- 8:57Speaker 1: an Obscurity Volume two set up and Punchlines. Probably read
- 9:01Speaker 1: that backwards, but this is how I'm reading it.
- 9:03Speaker 6: Yeah, yes, it's Killing an Obscurity set up some Punchlines
- 9:07Speaker 6: Volume two. The first the first project was failed Running
- 9:11Speaker 6: Back that came out in to about six years ago,
- 9:15Speaker 6: almost in twenty twenty. I thought we were all gonna die,
- 9:20Speaker 6: and uh so I wanted to have something put out
- 9:25Speaker 6: with a barcode on it. So that was a collection
- 9:29Speaker 6: of material that I had done, like you know, throughout
- 9:33Speaker 6: the throughout my time doing stand up, and I and
- 9:36Speaker 6: a lot of people did like that.
- 9:38Speaker 7: It went number one on iTunes.
- 9:40Speaker 6: But this one is a fully realized, like special, like
- 9:43Speaker 6: a a through line beginning, middle, and end that I
- 9:46Speaker 6: recorded on June twenty seventh of last year in New
- 9:50Speaker 6: York City at Caveat and you know, friend of the podcast,
- 9:53Speaker 6: Briandon Collins produced it. I was directed by Jeffson Ruley,
- 9:59Speaker 6: who's another comedian who's a friend of mine, and I
- 10:02Speaker 6: kind of just reached across the table instead of like
- 10:05Speaker 6: always looking up the Issa ray adage where you look
- 10:08Speaker 6: at your friends that are doing, you know, some of
- 10:11Speaker 6: the same things that you're doing, and to connect with
- 10:15Speaker 6: them and build. And I think we got a really
- 10:16Speaker 6: good project out there that people are gonna like, yeah.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Yeah. And before we get to the content of the project,
- 10:22Speaker 1: I wanted to talk to you about the cover. Much
- 10:26Speaker 1: like your cover in the twenty twenty special, you have
- 10:29Speaker 1: a childhood photo of you, and then your twenty twenty
- 10:32Speaker 1: one you had you I guess you're playing pee wee
- 10:34Speaker 1: football or something like that.
- 10:36Speaker 7: Yeah, at your little what.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Was that seventy two, you know, seventy two Jersey on Yeah,
- 10:40Speaker 1: and this time in twenty twenty six, is you doing
- 10:43Speaker 1: the the you know, the into the dragon fish on
- 10:47Speaker 1: your taekwon do with the black belt, and I'm just
- 10:51Speaker 1: curious what what went into the selection of this cover.
- 10:54Speaker 1: I mean, it's hard, let me tell you, that's hard.
- 10:56Speaker 3: That shit goes.
- 10:56Speaker 7: Thank you, thank you.
- 10:57Speaker 1: What why did you decide to feature? Obviously we know
- 11:01Speaker 1: it's because you, but why that specific picture.
- 11:04Speaker 6: I figured that picture maybe people would get a Wakanda
- 11:07Speaker 6: Forever vibe with that too, because that before that, you know,
- 11:11Speaker 6: and I was just thinking about what could I have
- 11:13Speaker 6: as a cover to just kind of compliment volume one
- 11:16Speaker 6: of of my you know, progression. And I remember, I
- 11:20Speaker 6: don't know how old you you guys are, but like
- 11:23Speaker 6: when I was a kid, we used to have a
- 11:25Speaker 6: photo studio called Olin Mills. I know, sometimes you do
- 11:29Speaker 6: family photos at like series and stuff like that. So
- 11:34Speaker 6: this was like yeah, yeah, so my parents we took
- 11:39Speaker 6: the family photos and then my dad, my late grade dad,
- 11:45Speaker 6: wanted to take pictures of me and my karate uniform
- 11:48Speaker 6: because he and my mom had invested so much money
- 11:51Speaker 6: into that. And I don't think I really wanted to
- 11:54Speaker 6: do those pictures, but he kind of forced me to
- 11:56Speaker 6: do it. Okay, So some of that I might have
- 11:59Speaker 6: been in those pictures because I think maybe my dad
- 12:02Speaker 6: do what you did, do your thing, and you know.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Right right right, Yeah, it looked like you was locked in.
- 12:07Speaker 1: So I thought you was just real serious about that
- 12:09Speaker 1: taekwondo life.
- 12:10Speaker 6: Yeah, and I was good. I was good at it,
- 12:12Speaker 6: but I just wanted to move on to sports. So
- 12:15Speaker 6: and actually, like I wanted to play football. So that's
- 12:19Speaker 6: kind of like the chronologically, you know, that might have
- 12:22Speaker 6: been the inverse of you know whatever. Yeah, but there
- 12:26Speaker 6: is a story about my time taking taekwondo and me
- 12:32Speaker 6: wanting to quit and my father bribing me with Jordan
- 12:37Speaker 6: sneakers if I got my black belt. So that's it's connected.
- 12:42Speaker 6: So if you listen to the special you watched, watch
- 12:45Speaker 6: the special that comes out on February twentieth on YouTube,
- 12:48Speaker 6: and you can everybody can go to Chris Lambert dot
- 12:51Speaker 6: com and you know, subscribe to my channel and get
- 12:56Speaker 6: notified when the special drops at midnight. They can see
- 12:59Speaker 6: that and they can see me talking about it, and yeah,
- 13:02Speaker 6: I'm excited. But yeah, that's definitely the reason for the cover.
- 13:06Speaker 6: And it's also a nod to hip hop, like you know,
- 13:09Speaker 6: to nas Nas is nomadic. I mean, I don't know
- 13:12Speaker 6: if he was the very first person, but at least
- 13:14Speaker 6: one of the significant first definitely you say the first.
- 13:20Speaker 5: Yeah, because after that member Ray Kwang came out and
- 13:23Speaker 5: said that big he was biting off.
- 13:26Speaker 4: A NAS album.
- 13:27Speaker 5: Okay, okay, yeah he's Biggie saw it and came around.
- 13:32Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:34Speaker 6: So yeah, So I wanted to do something like that
- 13:36Speaker 6: because I'm a big fan of hip hop and I
- 13:38Speaker 6: think a lot of MC's really like love comedy and
- 13:43Speaker 6: vice versa. We love we love hip hop. So it
- 13:47Speaker 6: was just kind of a nod to to you know,
- 13:49Speaker 6: hip hop. That was it's my how its influenced me
- 13:52Speaker 6: and the way that I do what I do.
- 13:54Speaker 4: So yeah, so this taping, that was the taping that
- 13:57Speaker 4: I was at.
- 13:58Speaker 7: That was the tape and you were at, wow.
- 14:00Speaker 3: Wow, it's gonna get a cameo.
- 14:03Speaker 5: No, your editor is amazing because I didn't. I didn't
- 14:05Speaker 5: hear my you know, horrific laugh and no, yeah, trust me.
- 14:13Speaker 5: Like there's a the Angelo concert rest in Piece of
- 14:16Speaker 5: the Angelo at Brooklyn Bowl where you can hear.
- 14:18Speaker 7: Me all over the bootleg.
- 14:21Speaker 5: Yeah, it's on SoundCloud and I'm like, people send it
- 14:24Speaker 5: to me and be like I heard you. I think
- 14:26Speaker 5: there were comments at one point being like, Yo, that's
- 14:28Speaker 5: been I mean, it's sh wow.
- 14:31Speaker 4: I don't identify that.
- 14:33Speaker 5: I have no regrets. Look, it was Dan Floyd. It's
- 14:36Speaker 5: a Quest Love and D'Angelo show with the Brooklyn Bowl.
- 14:38Speaker 4: Yeah, that's awesome.
- 14:39Speaker 7: When was that, Oh.
- 14:41Speaker 5: My god, I can't remember. It was like probably about
- 14:43Speaker 5: ten years ago.
- 14:44Speaker 7: Now.
- 14:45Speaker 4: It was insane.
- 14:47Speaker 6: It was just those Yeah, Brooklyn bols underrated as a
- 14:50Speaker 6: New York venue.
- 14:51Speaker 5: I think it definitely is. I also saw all PTA's wife,
- 14:56Speaker 5: all My Rudolph leading her Prince Cover band there. I
- 15:02Speaker 5: can believe that it's it's incredible. She has a Prince
- 15:06Speaker 5: cover band and she's incredible.
- 15:08Speaker 6: I saw a little brother there last August, the last
- 15:11Speaker 6: time I was there.
- 15:13Speaker 7: I love that place.
- 15:14Speaker 4: Yeah. Well no.
- 15:15Speaker 5: So I was at the taping of this special and
- 15:18Speaker 5: to everyone out there, mature, you're tune in on February twentieth.
- 15:21Speaker 4: It was a really great special.
- 15:22Speaker 5: I had a really great time at the taping, and
- 15:25Speaker 5: I also listened to it again, you know, to make
- 15:27Speaker 5: sure I wasn't overpowering with my laugh and I really
- 15:31Speaker 5: enjoyed it listening to it. So you put together a
- 15:34Speaker 5: really nice little body of work here, man, And I'm
- 15:36Speaker 5: really proud of you, and yeah, yeah, thank you.
- 15:39Speaker 6: It means a lot coming from you, guys, because I
- 15:41Speaker 6: know you will. You guys consume a lot of media
- 15:44Speaker 6: and you took the time to listen, and it's great,
- 15:47Speaker 6: really great that the people, when the people loved like
- 15:50Speaker 6: your shit and they understand it, it means a lot.
- 15:53Speaker 6: I'm not going to cry, but yeah, I really appreciate that.
- 15:57Speaker 4: We'll get to the crying later. That'll come later.
- 15:59Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I mean I will say when I was listening,
- 16:02Speaker 1: like right away, I was rocking with you, my favorite track,
- 16:06Speaker 1: you know, the Internet Judges, Woke Sandwiches, you mentioned the
- 16:11Speaker 1: Jordan Fords, right, and then of course the you know,
- 16:14Speaker 1: the finale, the Spike Lee was my hero. And you know,
- 16:17Speaker 1: I'm not gonna say too much, but the fact that
- 16:19Speaker 1: the word was is there in past ten so I
- 16:23Speaker 1: think that's part of the sentiment that people gonna get.
- 16:26Speaker 4: I don't.
- 16:27Speaker 6: Yeah, he's still one of the greatest filmmakers all of
- 16:29Speaker 6: all time. I think he's amazing. Uh, just not a
- 16:33Speaker 6: great dude when I met him, you know. Other than that,
- 16:36Speaker 6: he's still one of the greats.
- 16:37Speaker 5: It's so funny, bro, I don't I don't think we've
- 16:39Speaker 5: spoken since you take the show?
- 16:42Speaker 7: Do what did we did? No? I did the Ironheart.
- 16:45Speaker 4: Okay, did we speak about Spike Lee?
- 16:48Speaker 7: No? No, we didn't. We didn't.
- 16:50Speaker 5: Wow, all right, I've got to first time I met
- 16:52Speaker 5: Spike was when I was back at Howard h u
- 16:55Speaker 5: you know, and uh he got game. They were showing
- 16:59Speaker 5: he got games and got me tickets there like go
- 17:01Speaker 5: see this, you know, premiere he got game whatever like
- 17:03Speaker 5: a screening, a pre screen and that premiere because before
- 17:06Speaker 5: the film came out and I went and I got there.
- 17:09Speaker 4: I came when I got there, but I got there
- 17:11Speaker 4: whatever time. It was like path already.
- 17:12Speaker 5: So I sat in the very back and right after
- 17:15Speaker 5: I sat down, Spike Lee comes in and sits down
- 17:17Speaker 5: right next to me. Oh shit, right, you know, And
- 17:21Speaker 5: I'm at Howard for film all this. Yeah, I'm a
- 17:24Speaker 5: full on you know, and I'm a fiend for this man,
- 17:26Speaker 5: just like you know, like like you know what I mean.
- 17:29Speaker 5: I George Lucas is what started me in the game.
- 17:31Speaker 5: But Spike with Spike, you know, he was the black
- 17:33Speaker 5: dude right thing. It's my fucking movie, you know, down
- 17:38Speaker 5: the line, you know, So watch the film.
- 17:42Speaker 4: He got game, you know, great movie, into the.
- 17:45Speaker 5: Movie, but I think it was credit for on or
- 17:48Speaker 5: something was happening, but I slipped outside. I think I
- 17:51Speaker 5: had to run the bathroom or something. I come outside
- 17:53Speaker 5: and Spike is on the phone and it's just me
- 17:55Speaker 5: and Spike in the locky. I ain't say shit, right, Okay,
- 18:00Speaker 5: regretted it for you know, the next twenty years of
- 18:02Speaker 5: my life, you know what I mean. Like it was
- 18:04Speaker 5: like regretted. You know, that could have been my end
- 18:07Speaker 5: into the industry, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. Right
- 18:10Speaker 5: years later, I go to a signing at Spike Lee's store,
- 18:16Speaker 5: you know, in Brooklyn. I've actually know about Spike through
- 18:19Speaker 5: Combat Jack Rest in Peace, so you know, I have
- 18:22Speaker 5: a whole history with him at this point through combat,
- 18:24Speaker 5: which so I know about Spike, you know what I mean.
- 18:27Speaker 5: But I'm still there to get my ship signed. I
- 18:29Speaker 5: buy this T shirt, something I've wanted to get, so
- 18:31Speaker 5: I wanted to be Spike again, stand in line with
- 18:34Speaker 5: my partner and this man Spike Lee gives her.
- 18:40Speaker 4: I don't know what the fuck this look was, Spike,
- 18:42Speaker 4: but it was a look, you know what I mean,
- 18:45Speaker 4: And it was like in the negative, in a negative
- 18:50Speaker 4: like what's your partner doing standing my next to me? Okay?
- 18:54Speaker 5: And he and he's like signing other people and like me,
- 18:58Speaker 5: mother me, and the whole time why he's signing?
- 19:02Speaker 4: So I walk up to the point I'm almost.
- 19:04Speaker 5: Like, yo, man, is a fucking problem, Spike, you know,
- 19:06Speaker 5: I mean, I need to fuck you up right here,
- 19:08Speaker 5: you know what I mean? Like, you know you can
- 19:10Speaker 5: sign this ship and get up at the same time.
- 19:17Speaker 5: So yeah, so Fox.
- 19:19Speaker 4: I mean not because I don't know, maybe he had
- 19:24Speaker 4: a bad day. I don't know what it was.
- 19:26Speaker 3: You never asked what, Like I've.
- 19:28Speaker 4: Never I've never got to see him again, you know
- 19:30Speaker 4: what I mean.
- 19:30Speaker 5: And but hearing Chris's special, you know, I was like,
- 19:34Speaker 5: I fully relate to you fam finally was my hero
- 19:37Speaker 5: as well.
- 19:38Speaker 4: And dude can be an asshole, you know what I
- 19:41Speaker 4: mean straight up?
- 19:41Speaker 5: Like and this thing I know about Spike from other people,
- 19:45Speaker 5: and I've heard this more than one occasion.
- 19:49Speaker 4: I mean, look how he showed up the Nicks Chames.
- 19:50Speaker 4: What a funk you expect?
- 19:51Speaker 1: Like, yeah, that escalated a bad experience with I mean,
- 19:59Speaker 1: I yeah, I think it was, you know, mildly bad too.
- 20:02Speaker 4: But it was just one of the things where it's like, Okay,
- 20:04Speaker 4: you know a way, fuck did this dude? You know, like, yeah,
- 20:07Speaker 4: I like his movies, but that's about it.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I mean, Chris, I appreciate that you
- 20:12Speaker 1: like the whole And I'm sure this is indicative of
- 20:14Speaker 1: a lot of the albums and other albums, but this
- 20:16Speaker 1: particular album, you know, you are inserting yourself as comedians
- 20:20Speaker 1: do your life. You know, your experiences funny or tragic
- 20:24Speaker 1: or otherwise, and you know you're spinning it into goal.
- 20:27Speaker 1: You're spinning into comedy when you are what goes into
- 20:31Speaker 1: the selection of the clips that you're gonna choose for
- 20:34Speaker 1: your albums, these comedy albums like are you just like
- 20:37Speaker 1: which one's gonna get that has the biggest pop? Are
- 20:39Speaker 1: you just like it don't matter if no one laughed,
- 20:41Speaker 1: you liked it? So what's going in?
- 20:43Speaker 4: Like? How do you decide?
- 20:44Speaker 6: It depends on if I feel like like you're when
- 20:47Speaker 6: you're running in your hour, you feel like does this
- 20:50Speaker 6: joke work?
- 20:51Speaker 7: How can I make a thematic point?
- 20:53Speaker 6: But like, one of my favorite comedy specials is Chris
- 20:57Speaker 6: Rock's Bringing Them Pain from nineteen ninety six, where he's
- 21:01Speaker 6: in as yet Constitution Hall.
- 21:04Speaker 7: The nerds are gonna get after me.
- 21:05Speaker 6: But he was in DC and he opened up to
- 21:08Speaker 6: Constitution okay, and he was talking about Marion Barry in DC,
- 21:15Speaker 6: and like you.
- 21:16Speaker 7: Kind of talk about like you kind of talk about.
- 21:18Speaker 6: Your social things, your your your personal heartfelt stuff, relationships
- 21:28Speaker 6: and then sex if you want, like you just talk
- 21:30Speaker 6: about the like those kind of like those tempoles like relationships, dating, politics,
- 21:37Speaker 6: if you want, socials, commentary, and then you're out, you know.
- 21:41Speaker 6: So I just felt like that Spike Lee's story was
- 21:44Speaker 6: going to be a great closer because I'd been closing
- 21:46Speaker 6: with it for so long and building it and like
- 21:50Speaker 6: and I remember I remember being at the Creek in
- 21:54Speaker 6: the Cave when it was in Long Island City still
- 21:57Speaker 6: and I remember the homie Brandon Collins working with me
- 22:00Speaker 6: during that week, and I had some friends check it
- 22:02Speaker 6: out and they said, why don't you say what if
- 22:05Speaker 6: you kind of tweak tweak this or this made me
- 22:08Speaker 6: think about this, why don't you say? You know, and
- 22:10Speaker 6: just kind of formatting it and then as things happen,
- 22:14Speaker 6: it would build and get stronger. So I felt like
- 22:19Speaker 6: that would be a great closer, just talking about my career,
- 22:23Speaker 6: not being famous, but just being somebody that has achieved
- 22:26Speaker 6: things and talk about real sentimental moments and and then
- 22:33Speaker 6: take kind of like maybe not necessarily undercut it, but
- 22:38Speaker 6: but just share that story like a great way. I
- 22:41Speaker 6: just felt like that would be a good way to
- 22:42Speaker 6: set up the Spike Lee story and then just kind
- 22:45Speaker 6: of going off that format basically.
- 22:47Speaker 7: Okay, Yeah answered your question.
- 22:50Speaker 3: Though, No, no it does.
- 22:51Speaker 1: I'm you know, just when we talk about relatability, like
- 22:55Speaker 1: se worrying about money and getting older very relatable, you know,
- 23:00Speaker 1: especially you know, the racketeering network that is easy past.
- 23:04Speaker 3: You know, I don't really fuck with oh my god,
- 23:08Speaker 3: oh my.
- 23:08Speaker 1: God, and that is the blight or the plight of
- 23:12Speaker 1: every person from New York and New Jersey ever. But
- 23:16Speaker 1: you listen that level of relatability and what I really do,
- 23:20Speaker 1: like like you've always been on apology.
- 23:23Speaker 3: Apologetically black, and you speak about it all the time.
- 23:26Speaker 3: You like, I am black, I am black.
- 23:28Speaker 1: I like some non black shit, you know, shit that
- 23:30Speaker 1: is particularly white. You know, you mentioned like it's still
- 23:34Speaker 1: a classic, but save the last dance, right.
- 23:35Speaker 6: Yeah, it's a classic, you know what I mean? Yeah,
- 23:38Speaker 6: And I think it's like I don't know that I've
- 23:41Speaker 6: learned to. I'm a big black dude, so there's no
- 23:46Speaker 6: there's no way for me to It's like, I'm inherently black,
- 23:50Speaker 6: and my experience is the black experience, just like yours is,
- 23:55Speaker 6: just like Ben's is. It's just filtered in a different
- 23:58Speaker 6: way because of what we experience. So the crowd's gonna
- 24:01Speaker 6: know I'm a big black dude.
- 24:03Speaker 7: But it's just.
- 24:05Speaker 6: And I'm gonna you know, I try to be a
- 24:07Speaker 6: little subversive with things. I try to be a little
- 24:10Speaker 6: i don't know, witty sometimes, but yeah, and I appreciate
- 24:13Speaker 6: you saying that, like unapologetically black, and it's just not
- 24:17Speaker 6: I'm not shoving it down by anybody's throat.
- 24:20Speaker 7: But like I've had comics.
- 24:21Speaker 6: Say, you talk about race a lot, you kind of
- 24:25Speaker 6: talk about I had black black comic who was famous
- 24:28Speaker 6: who I opened for one time.
- 24:30Speaker 7: I was saying that I did.
- 24:32Speaker 6: I was maybe like five or six years in and
- 24:34Speaker 6: I knew what he was talking about, but it was like,
- 24:37Speaker 6: this is what I'm talking about.
- 24:38Speaker 7: But I'm not trying to.
- 24:39Speaker 3: Be yeah, like you're not doing PBS special, Like.
- 24:43Speaker 7: Yeah, I'm trying. I'm trying to be funny.
- 24:45Speaker 3: I'm trying to struggle all the time.
- 24:46Speaker 1: But it's like you, as you said, like you you're
- 24:50Speaker 1: you're a comedian. You do all the stuff, and you
- 24:52Speaker 1: happen to be a strong, bold black man too.
- 24:57Speaker 6: Yeah yeah, yeah, and you because you want to have
- 25:00Speaker 6: you want to have fun.
- 25:01Speaker 7: It's like you.
- 25:02Speaker 6: Because I remember my dad telling me, like he listened
- 25:05Speaker 6: to my stand up and he was saying, this is
- 25:07Speaker 6: how you. Because when I was a kid, I used
- 25:10Speaker 6: to watch Deaf Comedy Jam all the time. That was
- 25:13Speaker 6: like I'd watched that, Like I'd watch Saturday morning cartoons,
- 25:17Speaker 6: Like my dad would be sleep in the bedroom. I'd
- 25:21Speaker 6: be in my parents' bedroom. My mom would be at work.
- 25:25Speaker 6: Death Jam came on maybe twelve midnight or eleventh, I
- 25:28Speaker 6: forget my dad would Yeah, my dad would be sleep
- 25:32Speaker 6: I my mom would be coming home from work. I'd
- 25:35Speaker 6: be watching Deaf Jam, laughing my ass off. The next morning,
- 25:39Speaker 6: I rewatch it again and then keep watching it. And
- 25:42Speaker 6: I had comedy tapes. I'd fall asleep listening to stand
- 25:46Speaker 6: up like Martin Lawrence, my dad took me to see
- 25:50Speaker 6: you so crazy when I was like, it was that
- 25:52Speaker 6: like ninety two ninety three, the not rated movie.
- 25:55Speaker 7: He took me to see that. I was in like
- 25:56Speaker 7: seventh or eighth grade.
- 25:58Speaker 6: And his first album, them Talking Shit, was in his
- 26:02Speaker 6: truck playing it all the time, so like that.
- 26:07Speaker 7: So that's like Martin Lawrence was like.
- 26:10Speaker 6: A god to me when I was a kid because
- 26:12Speaker 6: he was from the area. He's from, you know, PG County,
- 26:17Speaker 6: and that's you know, I tried to get into. He
- 26:20Speaker 6: went to God, he went to Eleanor Roosevelt, and I
- 26:24Speaker 6: tried to get in. I took the test, but I
- 26:25Speaker 6: couldn't get it.
- 26:27Speaker 4: I told you, I tried a bunch of friends who
- 26:30Speaker 4: went there and all that.
- 26:31Speaker 1: Yeah, who's your since you mentioned him, who's your mount
- 26:35Speaker 1: rushmore of comedians?
- 26:37Speaker 6: That's tough because I feel like one of my friends
- 26:39Speaker 6: told me one time, you have comics that you loved
- 26:41Speaker 6: and revered when you were younger, and if you start
- 26:44Speaker 6: doing comedy, there's another set of comics that you and
- 26:49Speaker 6: you admire as you become a crafts person. Like So
- 26:52Speaker 6: when I was a kid, it was Martin Lawrence, Richard Pryor,
- 26:57Speaker 6: Paul Mooney and Chappelle's in there. But all those all
- 27:03Speaker 6: those people like like like d L. Hugh Lee and
- 27:07Speaker 6: just like just any of those dudes. And after I started,
- 27:12Speaker 6: I know they're prom and Chris Rock obviously, and this
- 27:15Speaker 6: is these guys could be a little problematic, but now
- 27:18Speaker 6: it's uh, it's Bill.
- 27:21Speaker 7: Burr, Patrese and Louis e. K.
- 27:25Speaker 6: And the reason I say those guys is because they're
- 27:29Speaker 6: on stage, persona isn't as far off as they're off stage.
- 27:35Speaker 6: So it's like you kind of you're bringing your your
- 27:37Speaker 6: off stage persona on stage and like if you got
- 27:41Speaker 6: you know, we've done the shows together before, and if
- 27:44Speaker 6: you see me on stage, maybe like that's Chris. You
- 27:46Speaker 6: know you you You're not like that's a totally different guy. Yes,
- 27:50Speaker 6: there's a performance, it's it's heightened because there's a performance,
- 27:54Speaker 6: but at the same time, it's just like that is Chris,
- 27:57Speaker 6: And once I leave the stage, you the audience will
- 28:00Speaker 6: have a better idea of who I am not, you know.
- 28:03Speaker 6: I know we got the pair of social relationships and
- 28:05Speaker 6: stuff going on with social media and podcast, but you
- 28:08Speaker 6: do have an idea of what I'm like, you know.
- 28:12Speaker 6: So that's kind of absolutely what I'm shooting for when
- 28:15Speaker 6: I go on stage and try to have that relatability
- 28:19Speaker 6: and trying to connect, because connecting is you know, if
- 28:22Speaker 6: you get the laughs from stuff that you've dealt with
- 28:24Speaker 6: that's kind of hard, then you feel less alone as
- 28:28Speaker 6: the artist, as a comic, and then the audience members
- 28:32Speaker 6: feel less alone too because you're sharing, you're sharing stuff together.
- 28:37Speaker 5: So that's that's funny that you asked that, Tiddnis. I
- 28:41Speaker 5: was on the Wave in the Red Flat podcast the
- 28:44Speaker 5: other day and we got to talk about comedy, and
- 28:46Speaker 5: they asked me this question, who is your Mount Rushmore?
- 28:50Speaker 5: And I said kind of the same thing you said, Chris,
- 28:52Speaker 5: where it's like I had people I grew up with,
- 28:54Speaker 5: like Richard Pryor is my north.
- 28:55Speaker 4: Stard I was.
- 28:56Speaker 5: I listened to him like you listen tomorrow, like I
- 28:59Speaker 5: knew his shit back of the forwards, and then you
- 29:01Speaker 5: know Eddie Martin, Chris, Dave. But what you said about
- 29:06Speaker 5: David was really interesting because to some really random shit
- 29:09Speaker 5: some years back, I got Dave's phone number.
- 29:12Speaker 4: I met him at a party, yeah, and we.
- 29:14Speaker 5: Were trying to get him on the show and he
- 29:17Speaker 5: just I mean I met him at his party randomly,
- 29:19Speaker 5: and dude just gave me his farming up. He was like,
- 29:21Speaker 5: I'll say, yo, will you please from on the podcast.
- 29:23Speaker 5: He was like, no, probably not, but here's my number.
- 29:26Speaker 4: Hit me up and we'll see.
- 29:27Speaker 3: But he was honest.
- 29:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 29:29Speaker 5: So one day I called Dave, you know, and Dave
- 29:33Speaker 5: answered and we talked and like for about I think
- 29:35Speaker 5: I talked to him maybe three times, you know, during
- 29:38Speaker 5: this period. And I talked to him for like forty
- 29:40Speaker 5: five minutes one day. I remember we were sat and
- 29:42Speaker 5: talked and he is the same dude that you see
- 29:44Speaker 5: on stage, Like he is just straight up the same guy.
- 29:47Speaker 4: He's funny at fuck. Obviously he's super intelligent.
- 29:50Speaker 7: But he is who he is.
- 29:51Speaker 4: He's not hiding anything.
- 29:53Speaker 5: It's the same thing that's like Richard Pryor as my God.
- 29:56Speaker 5: And there was a special he like his three main
- 29:58Speaker 5: specials everyone knows is other special that I found when
- 30:02Speaker 5: I was like fourteen. I rented it from Blockbuster. And
- 30:05Speaker 5: he opens up and he starts talking.
- 30:07Speaker 4: He's young.
- 30:07Speaker 5: It's one of his first things that it is taped,
- 30:10Speaker 5: and five minutes cent he starts talking about how once
- 30:12Speaker 5: you suck a dick a few times, you're going to
- 30:14Speaker 5: get an addition to it. Oh, and I hit stopped.
- 30:18Speaker 5: You know, I wasn't ready because I didn't know his
- 30:20Speaker 5: whole history. I didn't know what I was raised in
- 30:21Speaker 5: a whorehouse, et cetera, all the things that he'd been through.
- 30:24Speaker 5: So I didn't know that about him, and I hit stopped.
- 30:26Speaker 4: I was like paus literal pause, you know, and I
- 30:33Speaker 4: didn't finish.
- 30:34Speaker 5: I've heard that special since, but I did not finish
- 30:36Speaker 5: it then because you know, I was not ready for
- 30:39Speaker 5: that level of truth. But that is what makes him
- 30:42Speaker 5: to me the god of everything, because he'll come because
- 30:44Speaker 5: that shit is funny as fun too. I can't lie
- 30:46Speaker 5: like that's such a great joke, but you know, like
- 30:49Speaker 5: I wasn't ready for that level at that time.
- 30:51Speaker 7: Yeah, and no, that's.
- 30:53Speaker 4: Why I really appreciate your shit.
- 30:55Speaker 5: And it's very relatable to me as a black man
- 30:58Speaker 5: and someone who has his own issues and my father's
- 31:02Speaker 5: past as well, and I had you know, I don't
- 31:05Speaker 5: know if your dad was military, but my dad was,
- 31:07Speaker 5: you know.
- 31:07Speaker 7: X Air Force, and my dad was not.
- 31:09Speaker 2: No.
- 31:10Speaker 5: Okay, well he sounded like it. He sounded like he
- 31:14Speaker 5: could have been, but it was that same type of
- 31:16Speaker 5: hard tough.
- 31:17Speaker 7: Love, you know what I mean that. Yeah, it's weird.
- 31:20Speaker 6: It's weird when we talk about like black fathers that
- 31:24Speaker 6: you know we're around when you know most of them
- 31:28Speaker 6: are around.
- 31:28Speaker 4: But that's bullshit.
- 31:31Speaker 6: Yeah, black men are in their children, they're around because
- 31:34Speaker 6: I remember growing up with a lot of kids, like
- 31:37Speaker 6: I went to a black Catholic school in DC, Saint
- 31:40Speaker 6: Francis Xavier from preschool to six, and there's.
- 31:43Speaker 7: Black dad's there at the games all that stuff.
- 31:46Speaker 6: You boy that failed running back picture, there were black
- 31:49Speaker 6: dads at those games.
- 31:51Speaker 7: I mean, you know.
- 31:52Speaker 6: So it was just one of those things where I
- 31:55Speaker 6: kind of felt like my dad brought broke some generational
- 31:59Speaker 6: curses with like his dad wasn't around, his dad was
- 32:03Speaker 6: in service, and my dad was around for me, like
- 32:08Speaker 6: he was at my games. He was at I think
- 32:10Speaker 6: one of the proudest moments of my of he. I
- 32:14Speaker 6: think the proudest he ever felt of me probably was
- 32:17Speaker 6: when I got my black belt. If you do a
- 32:21Speaker 6: deep dive on my podcast The Mundane Festival, you may
- 32:25Speaker 6: not have if you go back a couple of years,
- 32:26Speaker 6: because I re aired the episode after he passed away.
- 32:30Speaker 6: He did the show, and I remember he was he did.
- 32:34Speaker 6: We recorded that in twenty thirteen, I believe, and he
- 32:37Speaker 6: brought up the time where I got my black belt
- 32:39Speaker 6: and he starts crying because I had to.
- 32:43Speaker 7: My teacher didn't like me.
- 32:45Speaker 6: He had I don't think my teacher liked my dad
- 32:47Speaker 6: for some reason or some shit, and he was hard
- 32:50Speaker 6: on me, my karate teacher, and you had to.
- 32:55Speaker 7: It was Junery Karate.
- 32:56Speaker 6: Well you guys were you guys were in college, you
- 32:59Speaker 6: guys would have been it was that school was probably
- 33:02Speaker 6: gone back then, but it was Jeanery Karate in the
- 33:06Speaker 6: early late mid to late eighties early nineties when Karate
- 33:09Speaker 6: kid was popping and you'd have to go all the
- 33:12Speaker 6: kids from the area. You go to Falls Church, Virginia,
- 33:16Speaker 6: one of the main schools, and Jeaneree, the master, the
- 33:20Speaker 6: dude that owned these schools, was there. It's like a
- 33:24Speaker 6: small Asian guy. I think he was Korean. I don't know.
- 33:28Speaker 6: I'd have to look it up Wikipedia. But you're you're auditioning,
- 33:33Speaker 6: you're trying to get your black belt, and this guy
- 33:35Speaker 6: is judging you. And I remember that day that the
- 33:39Speaker 6: Karate story takes place in the Jordan Ford track. I
- 33:43Speaker 6: you have to go up in front of everybody and
- 33:45Speaker 6: say my name. I said my name. Chris Lambert, June Ree,
- 33:48Speaker 6: Marla height, sir, very militaristic, and my dad he cites
- 33:54Speaker 6: that moment and he was just like, man, when you
- 33:56Speaker 6: did that, I was like, holy shit, Like you're He's like,
- 33:59Speaker 6: you know, he was impressed. So like when the spotlights
- 34:03Speaker 6: were on, I did what I had to do. And
- 34:06Speaker 6: you know, you're bribing a black kid for some Jordan Fords.
- 34:10Speaker 7: You know you're gonna you're gonna up.
- 34:13Speaker 6: You gotta show up, so you know, like that's and
- 34:16Speaker 6: I think he told me he loved me.
- 34:18Speaker 7: He was he was good to me. Uh he was.
- 34:21Speaker 6: He he reprimanded me when I needed to be. I
- 34:24Speaker 6: was a good kid, but he was. He was just
- 34:27Speaker 6: there and he was he was my best friend. And
- 34:30Speaker 6: I could talk to him about things. And I think,
- 34:32Speaker 6: you know, my uncle, my dad, my mom's brother passed
- 34:37Speaker 6: away a week ago, and it's just like we're losing
- 34:40Speaker 6: our elders. You know, it's just like we're like who
- 34:44Speaker 6: because I feel like our generation we respected our I'm
- 34:49Speaker 6: not trying to say these young kids don't. I just
- 34:52Speaker 6: think there was a connection and you could look to
- 34:56Speaker 6: them for for stuff, and now we're kind of becoming
- 34:58Speaker 6: that And I don't know, it's like because then I'm like,
- 35:03Speaker 6: I'll be forty six next week, and I'm just like,
- 35:06Speaker 6: who do I look to?
- 35:08Speaker 1: You know?
- 35:09Speaker 6: Who am I? You know, So it's just kind of sad,
- 35:12Speaker 6: and but that's life.
- 35:14Speaker 5: Yeah, so dark, but no, I mean, that's what it is.
- 35:17Speaker 5: And it's like, you know, it's what I've learned, you know,
- 35:20Speaker 5: with both of my parents passing, is that one is,
- 35:25Speaker 5: you know, one of the toughest things you can ever
- 35:27Speaker 5: go through, but it's also something that we all have
- 35:30Speaker 5: to go through. And the alternative is that your parents
- 35:33Speaker 5: see their children pass before them, and that's something no
- 35:36Speaker 5: parent ever wants to see, right, And I think it's
- 35:40Speaker 5: very beautiful that you can call your dad your best friend,
- 35:43Speaker 5: because I really.
- 35:44Speaker 4: Can't say that.
- 35:44Speaker 5: You know, me and my dad had a especially as
- 35:47Speaker 5: a child. We he was very supportive in ways, but
- 35:51Speaker 5: he was also very much like a very hard father
- 35:55Speaker 5: and very stern and very just distant, you know, and
- 36:02Speaker 5: alcohol probably played a large part of that and other things.
- 36:05Speaker 5: So it was different, but it's really you know, I
- 36:08Speaker 5: definitely related at the same time because he was also
- 36:10Speaker 5: that same type of dude who was like wanted me
- 36:13Speaker 5: to see man, Like the one line you had where
- 36:16Speaker 5: I was like, oh my god, there's that same man
- 36:19Speaker 5: was if you don't finish this, you'll never finish anything.
- 36:25Speaker 5: And I was sitting there like as you were saying,
- 36:27Speaker 5: I'm listening to the Special last night, and I'm like.
- 36:30Speaker 4: Yo, did I I'm like, have I quit on ship?
- 36:34Speaker 7: You know?
- 36:36Speaker 4: I'm thinking about it now. I'm like, you know, damn,
- 36:39Speaker 4: were you wrong? You know? Because whatever?
- 36:41Speaker 5: You know, it's probably boy scouts back then because you
- 36:44Speaker 5: wanted me to get my Eagle Scout and I did.
- 36:46Speaker 4: But I'm like, I probably quit on some things since then.
- 36:50Speaker 5: You know, Okay, sometimes you got to learn that just
- 36:58Speaker 5: you anymore, you got to quit on it.
- 36:59Speaker 8: So yeah, I think it's one of those things where
- 37:03Speaker 8: like because most parents, like you, you look at them
- 37:06Speaker 8: as these superheroes and then when you get older you
- 37:09Speaker 8: realize they're they're just people, yes, and and the fact
- 37:12Speaker 8: that him and my mom who my mom is still
- 37:14Speaker 8: around and but it's like you really is they're just people.
- 37:18Speaker 8: And then if they were good, it's like, well, Jesus,
- 37:21Speaker 8: crast's amazing when they were good to you.
- 37:24Speaker 6: When you when like my parents were, you know, it
- 37:26Speaker 6: wasn't perfect, but it's just like, man, this is just
- 37:30Speaker 6: this is just a guy, this is just a woman.
- 37:32Speaker 6: They're trying to figure it out, and they led me
- 37:36Speaker 6: to all of the good things that I've I've you know,
- 37:40Speaker 6: made it better for me than it was for them. Right,
- 37:44Speaker 6: Sometimes hard to tell your parents that. But my mom
- 37:46Speaker 6: is kind of a brick wall.
- 37:48Speaker 3: But I was going to have you ever told them that.
- 37:50Speaker 6: I told him that all the time. I told him that,
- 37:53Speaker 6: so they knew, Yeah, my mom knows right.
- 37:58Speaker 1: One thing I would say about you, I feel like
- 38:00Speaker 1: you're very consistent and a feel that where inconsistency is
- 38:05Speaker 1: really easy to uh end up in that that kind
- 38:09Speaker 1: of I don't know how how what analogy to use here,
- 38:12Speaker 1: but like when you are constantly like hanging on hope,
- 38:17Speaker 1: like you're you're in an entertainment industry at the end
- 38:19Speaker 1: of the day, right, so it's it's hard.
- 38:22Speaker 3: It's hard in terms of you know, like like yeah,
- 38:23Speaker 3: you've had roles and you've done this, you've been on TV.
- 38:26Speaker 1: You know, you're doing the comedy thing, and you know
- 38:29Speaker 1: to varying degrees of success. Right, I would I would
- 38:32Speaker 1: call you, I would look at yourself and look at
- 38:33Speaker 1: what you're doing and call you successful just because you're
- 38:35Speaker 1: out there that you're consistent, you're doing your own.
- 38:38Speaker 3: All that other stuff.
- 38:39Speaker 1: How do you feel in terms of your level consistency,
- 38:43Speaker 1: like do what?
- 38:45Speaker 3: And what advice would you give others? Do you feel successful?
- 38:48Speaker 6: I think when I looked at where I started to
- 38:50Speaker 6: where I am now, to be able to be on
- 38:52Speaker 6: a podcast and talk to you about what a project
- 38:54Speaker 6: that I did, it's pretty successful. Ideally, it would be
- 38:59Speaker 6: nice to not have a day job, like I was
- 39:00Speaker 6: telling Town.
- 39:01Speaker 7: Is the good? Yeah, But I think, like I think so,
- 39:08Speaker 7: I'll say this.
- 39:09Speaker 6: I think with the pandemic and with the sag strikes,
- 39:12Speaker 6: I think now maybe now, But I don't even think
- 39:16Speaker 6: that's true.
- 39:17Speaker 7: Uh.
- 39:17Speaker 6: Maybe some people have a better idea that there's the
- 39:21Speaker 6: one percenters are always working there. You see the same
- 39:24Speaker 6: people in these projects that we love and we maybe
- 39:27Speaker 6: we don't love so much, but the stuff that we
- 39:29Speaker 6: consume and enjoy watching, it's kind of the same people
- 39:33Speaker 6: and all these things. And then there's a percentage of
- 39:35Speaker 6: people that are like me, like us, that are grinding away.
- 39:40Speaker 6: You might you get a part like I had a
- 39:42Speaker 6: part on I booked a role on this show called
- 39:46Speaker 6: The Chair Company, a new HBO comedy, and uh, that
- 39:50Speaker 6: helped pay for the special, that helped pay the camera guy,
- 39:54Speaker 6: that helped pay the director, and uh, you know, so
- 39:57Speaker 6: it's it was great to get that, and so it's it's, uh,
- 40:02Speaker 6: I think I'm I feel yes, So I feel successful
- 40:06Speaker 6: sometimes and then sometimes when you're getting reprimanded at your
- 40:11Speaker 6: day job when it wasn't your fault, you don't, you
- 40:14Speaker 6: don't feel successful. But I knew that I was coming,
- 40:17Speaker 6: that I was coming to talk to you guys and
- 40:20Speaker 6: talk about comedy, talk about something that I care about.
- 40:24Speaker 6: I care about my day job, but something that I'm
- 40:27Speaker 6: really passionate about. Uh, that makes me feel good. So
- 40:31Speaker 6: I think it's just a balance.
- 40:33Speaker 7: I answer it right.
- 40:34Speaker 3: No, you you're answering everything. You're giving us a lot more.
- 40:37Speaker 1: And I think it's also good for people to hear this,
- 40:39Speaker 1: especially those who are in similar positions, similar arrangements, just
- 40:43Speaker 1: like how you explain, like how you even went about
- 40:45Speaker 1: doing a comedy special to begin with, like that's fire.
- 40:48Speaker 1: Like when I was listening to the different tracks, I
- 40:51Speaker 1: was like, oh, this is like a little TikTok of
- 40:53Speaker 1: his comedy because like you know, it was.
- 40:55Speaker 3: Quick, it was it was relatable.
- 40:57Speaker 1: It was getting to me understanding of who you were
- 41:00Speaker 1: a person, Like if someone never heard of you, never
- 41:02Speaker 1: seen you, and you was like, Yo, just listen to this.
- 41:04Speaker 3: That's a fantastic intro to you and thank you.
- 41:07Speaker 1: Yeah, And it does everything you said tonight, like as
- 41:11Speaker 1: you're speaking to us, just about explaining who you are
- 41:13Speaker 1: as a person, and that the fact that it's you're
- 41:15Speaker 1: the same person on stage that you are right now
- 41:17Speaker 1: speaking to us, you know.
- 41:18Speaker 3: So it's really good how you're going about that.
- 41:21Speaker 1: And I think that will give other people guidance and
- 41:24Speaker 1: give them give them some hope too, like like you know,
- 41:26Speaker 1: they could beat themselves, they could.
- 41:28Speaker 7: Be Yeah, it's crazy.
- 41:30Speaker 6: It's hard because I know, I know people will talk about,
- 41:34Speaker 6: you know, the Internet being assessed pool. But like when
- 41:36Speaker 6: I got on Twitter like almost kind of seventeen eighteen
- 41:39Speaker 6: years ago whenever, man, it was like we've.
- 41:43Speaker 3: Been on that whole a long time.
- 41:44Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 41:44Speaker 6: Yeah, And it's uh, you meet people like you all
- 41:48Speaker 6: or through the connections that you have like Rod. I
- 41:51Speaker 6: was telling Rod the other day like Uham is prime, Yeah,
- 41:55Speaker 6: Rod is prime. Ron Morrow Black out of tips just
- 41:59Speaker 6: h I remember listening to Beaumonti Jones and then Morning
- 42:04Speaker 6: Jones and then.
- 42:06Speaker 7: Like, oh, who's the Rod and Charlotte guy?
- 42:08Speaker 6: And then I got his Twitter and we struck up
- 42:11Speaker 6: a friendship chat chatting on g Chat and now we're
- 42:13Speaker 6: you know, doing you know, doing our things. I connected
- 42:16Speaker 6: with you guys through Rod and Brandon. So it's there
- 42:21Speaker 6: are really beautiful things that come out of this, the
- 42:24Speaker 6: god forsaken Internet. So you know what I mean, to
- 42:29Speaker 6: connect and things like that. Because I moved to New
- 42:33Speaker 6: York in twenty two thousand and seven, I had some
- 42:37Speaker 6: family friends that I stayed with for a couple of
- 42:39Speaker 6: weeks before I found my place, but I was alone,
- 42:43Speaker 6: and then you know, you have Twitter and stuff like that,
- 42:45Speaker 6: then you start to connect with people, and it did
- 42:48Speaker 6: make me feel less alone, like, oh, oh there are
- 42:51Speaker 6: black people who like Childish Gambino. Okay, they do like
- 42:55Speaker 6: these shows. Oh this is cool to people who are
- 42:58Speaker 6: black and people who are these people are like me.
- 43:02Speaker 6: So I think you do kind of find your your people,
- 43:08Speaker 6: your tribe online, So yeah, I think that's part of
- 43:12Speaker 6: it too. And then the encouragement, you know, I really
- 43:16Speaker 6: appreciate it means a lot when the people love your shit,
- 43:19Speaker 6: they enjoy your stuff and and and and one thing
- 43:22Speaker 6: with the special was to kind of purge myself of
- 43:27Speaker 6: that material, Like I like, there, I might bring something
- 43:31Speaker 6: up here and there. I did a I did a
- 43:33Speaker 6: Don't Tell show on uh, like last weekend in Long Island.
- 43:37Speaker 6: That's a show where people go to these these locations
- 43:41Speaker 6: and like uh and and they do a kind of
- 43:43Speaker 6: a secret comedy show people by tack and then you
- 43:46Speaker 6: do stand up. So I did this show, and I
- 43:49Speaker 6: was doing new stuff, and I threw a couple of
- 43:51Speaker 6: the old bits in there, but for the most part,
- 43:54Speaker 6: like as I'm working on the new hour, yeah, I
- 43:58Speaker 6: wanted to get rid of that so I can push
- 44:00Speaker 6: myself to do more and write more. Yeah, to not
- 44:05Speaker 6: be like, Okay, I'm just gonna do this Spike Lee joke.
- 44:08Speaker 6: I know that's gonna work. So I'm gonna close with
- 44:10Speaker 6: that every night, and that's gonna be you know, nobody
- 44:13Speaker 6: wants that. Nobody wants the same jokes over and over,
- 44:17Speaker 6: and comedians we can't do that anyway. So and the
- 44:21Speaker 6: title the Killing and Obscurity came from Bill Burr, who
- 44:26Speaker 6: was on a podcast with this other comedian named Tom Rhodes,
- 44:29Speaker 6: and he was talking about like and encounter that he
- 44:34Speaker 6: had with Dave Chappelle where Dave Chappelle said, man, I
- 44:38Speaker 6: like the stuff that you're doing. It it's gonna take
- 44:40Speaker 6: you a while, but when you hit, you're really gonna hit.
- 44:43Speaker 6: And that is something that Burr said carried him through
- 44:47Speaker 6: the killing and obscurity years, where he would go to
- 44:49Speaker 6: these clubs and people would be like, oh my god,
- 44:52Speaker 6: you were so funny. I never heard of you. I
- 44:56Speaker 6: heard of you, Like, why why are you here? Why
- 44:58Speaker 6: are you in this town. I'm like, you should be
- 45:02Speaker 6: more famous or whatever. Any people will say anything to you,
- 45:05Speaker 6: and You're just like, well, because I got I'm trying
- 45:07Speaker 6: to get some money, get paid.
- 45:11Speaker 7: Yeah. So it's like.
- 45:13Speaker 3: Even Whoopy Godber said that, you know.
- 45:16Speaker 6: Whoopy Goldberg is referenced in the Special too and The
- 45:19Speaker 6: Closer and and you know, so it's it's one of
- 45:22Speaker 6: those things where you just you just keep going. And
- 45:27Speaker 6: I had an I've opened for Burr a couple of times,
- 45:31Speaker 6: and the first time, the first time that I opened,
- 45:34Speaker 6: I had a ticket to his show because I was
- 45:37Speaker 6: at Caroline's one time when the comics were trying to
- 45:39Speaker 6: get in for free, they kicked all the comics out
- 45:42Speaker 6: and I was like, damn. I was bummed out. So
- 45:44Speaker 6: I didn't get to see him. And then I said,
- 45:47Speaker 6: the next time he's in town, I'm just gonna go.
- 45:49Speaker 6: I'm gonna get a ticket. I'm not gonna worry about it.
- 45:53Speaker 6: And so the time came, he was doing this benefit
- 45:56Speaker 6: down the street from me and Hasburg Heights at this
- 45:58Speaker 6: club called Bananas. I'm in line. I'm standing in line
- 46:01Speaker 6: talking to a guy. He said, what do you do.
- 46:03Speaker 6: I said, I have a day job and I'm a comedian.
- 46:05Speaker 6: I'm an actor. And he said, oh, are you famous.
- 46:07Speaker 6: I said, no, I'm not famous. If I was famous,
- 46:10Speaker 6: I'd be on the show. And then like fifteen minutes later,
- 46:14Speaker 6: Bill Burr comes in with Paul Versey. Paul Versus a
- 46:16Speaker 6: buddy of mine. Great he Versus a great friend of
- 46:19Speaker 6: Bill Burr. And I've worked with Versy a bunch of times,
- 46:23Speaker 6: and Versi looks at me. He sees me, He's like, oh,
- 46:25Speaker 6: just stay here, and I was like, all right, and
- 46:27Speaker 6: I'm thinking i can just maybe dap get to Dap
- 46:30Speaker 6: up Bill big fan Blise blo, great show. He tells
- 46:35Speaker 6: me to come and the Bananas is in this holiday inn.
- 46:39Speaker 6: It used to be in this holiday inn and hazbra
- 46:41Speaker 6: kais you know. So they just open up a conference room,
- 46:43Speaker 6: see people, and they Paul walks me into the room
- 46:48Speaker 6: in this little conference room and it's Bill Burr and
- 46:50Speaker 6: I talked to him and shoot the shit with him.
- 46:54Speaker 6: And then twenty minutes later, the producer of the show
- 46:57Speaker 6: comes in and says, Okay, how are we going to
- 46:59Speaker 6: do this? And Burr says, I'll do about fifty and
- 47:04Speaker 6: just let these guys do ten. And he eats at me,
- 47:08Speaker 6: and I was like, oh shit, I'm on the show.
- 47:11Speaker 6: So I got to open for him on the show.
- 47:14Speaker 7: And I was ready.
- 47:15Speaker 6: I was prepared, and I killed and we had white
- 47:20Speaker 6: Castle after the show because somebody wanted to go to
- 47:22Speaker 6: white Castle. So there's a picture somewhere of us at
- 47:25Speaker 6: white Castle.
- 47:26Speaker 4: Wow.
- 47:27Speaker 7: And then months later I.
- 47:28Speaker 6: Emailed him just to thank him again, and he said, Chris,
- 47:32Speaker 6: good luck with your stuff. Just you know, keep plowing ahead,
- 47:36Speaker 6: don't let the bullshit beat you down. And I took
- 47:39Speaker 6: his advice and you get this. Everybody gets this project.
- 47:42Speaker 6: Everybody gets killing an obscurity. On February twentieth, What.
- 47:46Speaker 3: A great story man and the power words you said
- 47:49Speaker 3: was famous. I'll be on the show.
- 47:51Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 47:51Speaker 4: Three minutes later.
- 47:52Speaker 7: Yeah, he's on the show. Yeah.
- 47:55Speaker 1: So okay, you you just said it again, you know,
- 47:59Speaker 1: killing Obscurity, Setups and Punchlines, Volume two. Please again, Just

- 48:42Speaker 6: bonus tracks that'll be that I decided to add of
- 48:46Speaker 6: me talking about there's this one me talking about Superman
- 48:51Speaker 6: being too woke the new Superman movie, and then there's
- 48:55Speaker 6: one of me talking about r Kelly how So that
- 48:59Speaker 6: it's one that I've been working on, like for for years,
- 49:04Speaker 6: and I was at the Comedy Seller and I just said,
- 49:07Speaker 6: I told my girlfriend, I said, you know, you gotta
- 49:11Speaker 6: If I don't do this R Kelly joke, I'm in trouble.
- 49:14Speaker 6: I can't go all the way down, and I don't.
- 49:16Speaker 6: So I did it, and I think it turned out
- 49:19Speaker 6: really well.
- 49:20Speaker 1: So okay, and that's only on the on the album
- 49:25Speaker 1: and it's like a bonus track.
- 49:26Speaker 7: Ok yeah, two bonus tracks out there, so you.
- 49:30Speaker 4: Can't get that one.

- 51:08Speaker 6: I'm a little subversive. I'm a little dark. I got
- 51:10Speaker 6: invited one of my because I present as a clean comic.
- 51:14Speaker 6: The album will say parental advisory on there because there's
- 51:17Speaker 6: some person and stuff, there's adult humor. I was one
- 51:22Speaker 6: of my A comedian buddy recommended me to a friend,
- 51:25Speaker 6: one of his coworkers, and he said, yeah, Chris, Chris
- 51:28Speaker 6: would be good, uh for your show. He's clean. But
- 51:31Speaker 6: he and I talked to the guy. I said, uh,
- 51:34Speaker 6: what is this for a church? And he's like, yeah,
- 51:36Speaker 6: it's for a church. And it's like, I don't know
- 51:40Speaker 6: what kind of I forget what kind of church?
- 51:41Speaker 7: He said.
- 51:42Speaker 6: I said, well, you might want to look at my
- 51:43Speaker 6: YouTube channel, uh and see what he's like. Because I'm clean.
- 51:48Speaker 6: I don't, I don't, I'm not dirty, but I'm not
- 51:51Speaker 6: for everybody. And it's for a church. And so he said, yeah, okay,
- 51:54Speaker 6: i'll call you back. He never called back. So I'm
- 51:58Speaker 6: I'm not doing that church ben Fit next month, and
- 52:03Speaker 6: I'm fine with that.
- 52:04Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 52:05Speaker 6: I think, you know, I try to have fun with
- 52:07Speaker 6: those taboo topics in my own way. Yeah, because then
- 52:12Speaker 6: the Superman is that's what I felt like. I mean,
- 52:16Speaker 6: she had cutlery on her hands. I don't think that
- 52:20Speaker 6: was woke. My argument that it was that it wasn't woke. No, yeah,
- 52:25Speaker 6: it's a great argument. I did not make the connection.
- 52:28Speaker 6: But it's also just the wile out of what you're
- 52:30Speaker 6: saying there.
- 52:31Speaker 5: Yeah, but you know, like I said, I don't want
- 52:34Speaker 5: to spoil that for people with that, but Superman is focus.
- 52:37Speaker 5: That's a classic going right there, thank you, thank you.

- 53:31Speaker 5: asking him the first time, Like yeah, yeah, I'm good.
- 53:35Speaker 6: He's still one of the greats him.

- 54:14Speaker 5: was like, you know, one of the funniest things I've
