Speaker 1: Welcome to Dirty Rush, The Truth about Sorority Life with
• 0:04
Speaker 1: your hosts me Gia Judaice.
• 0:06
Speaker 2: Daisy Kent, and Jennifer Kessler.
• 0:11
Speaker 1: Hey, guys, welcome back to another episode of Dirty Rush.
• 0:14
Speaker 1: I am Gia Judaicce, and today I am joined by
• 0:17
Speaker 1: Elise Stacy, who has compared the Ole Miss standards board
• 0:21
Speaker 1: to jail. We're going to hear all about that and
• 0:24
Speaker 1: more juicy secrets about Southern Rush.
• 0:26
Speaker 2: Glad to be here. Sounds like a party.
• 0:29
Speaker 1: It is. It's a sorority party, the good, the bad,
• 0:31
  Speaker 1: and the ugly.
• 0:32
  Speaker 2: I love it.
• 0:33
Speaker 1: So can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
• 0:35
Speaker 1: Where are you from and where did you go to school?
• 0:38
Speaker 2: Sure? I grew up in a country, in the country
• 0:41
Speaker 2: of Mississippi, and I went to Ole Miss. There was
• 0:43
Speaker 2: nowhere else that I was looking. I didn't even apply
• 0:45
Speaker 2: anywhere else. I knew I wanted to be an old
• 0:47
Speaker 2: Miss rebel, and I knew I wanted to go through
• 0:48
Speaker 2: sorority rush from a very young age. So I was
• 0:50
Speaker 2: a tried oiled at Ole Miss. And it was one
• 0:52
Speaker 2: hundred years ago, as I like to say, but let's
• 0:54
Speaker 2: just say that it was twenty something years ago.
• 0:57
  Speaker 3: Wow, my sister.
• 0:58
Speaker 1: My sister is a tried out you mesh Okay, So
• 1:02
Speaker 1: what made you decide to go to Old Miss?
• 1:04
Speaker 3: Why were you so set on going there?
• 1:07
Speaker 2: You know, I think just growing up in Mississippi. There's
• 1:09
Speaker 2: really two camps to see. They're Old Miss Mississippi State, right,
• 1:12
Speaker 2: And I had family ties to Ole Miss. And if
• 1:16
Speaker 2: you've ever been, I think you would understand why you
• 1:19
Speaker 2: would go. I mean, it's just so much fun. It's
• 1:21
Speaker 2: just it's a beautiful city, well city, it's a beautiful town.
• 1:24
Speaker 2: Oxford is darling, and everybody there's just real warm and welcoming,
• 1:28
Speaker 2: and there's there's just something about it. It just feels
• 1:30
Speaker 2: like home. I was there this past weekend and I
• 1:32
  Speaker 2: love it.
• 1:32
Speaker 3: Ah, do you still live in Mississippi?
• 1:35
Speaker 2: No, I live south of Nashville. I moved to Nashville
• 1:38
Speaker 2: tend to go to business school, and then I never left.
• 1:41
Speaker 1: Everyone says that about Nashville. You go and you never leave.
• 1:44
Speaker 2: That's what happens. Yeah.
• 1:46
Speaker 3: So what was your overall experience like Ole Miss?
• 1:50
Speaker 2: I loved it. It was it was a blast. It
• 1:54
Speaker 2: was a lot of fun. I had a ton of
• 1:55
Speaker 2: fun I did. I was good with my grades, the
• 1:58
Speaker 2: biggest mistake I ever made at ole Miss was that
• 2:01
Speaker 2: I graduated early. I mean, how dumb was that? I
• 2:03
  Speaker 2: don't know what I was Type A, But yeah, I
• 2:06
Speaker 2: had a great time. It was I made friends for
• 2:09
Speaker 2: life that I'm still really close to and still writing
• 2:13
Speaker 2: those recommendations for tri Delta even now.
• 2:16
  Speaker 3: I love that.
• 2:17
Speaker 1: So you were in tried Out. Do you think it's
• 2:19
Speaker 1: different now than when you were a chapter member?
• 2:22
Speaker 2: Oh? Sure? I mean, for one thing, the verbiage has changed, right,
• 2:26
Speaker 2: Like we said rush rushies. Now it's P and M.
• 2:28
Speaker 2: But potential new members. There's all these kind of things.
• 2:30
Speaker 2: We used to do the door song where we would
• 2:32
Speaker 2: all pile in like on top of each other and
• 2:35
Speaker 2: it's like the door it open and we would all
• 2:36
Speaker 2: just be like on top of each other, which was
• 2:38
Speaker 2: very uncomfortable and probably dangerous. They quit doing that now too,
• 2:42
Speaker 2: and some of the you know, we did the Philanthropy round,
• 2:44
Speaker 2: we did the all the pref round we did. I
• 2:47
Speaker 2: think we space it out differently and called them different things,
• 2:50
Speaker 2: but I think that the sentiment is largely the same
• 2:52
Speaker 2: from what I've seen. They just call it different things.
• 2:54
  Speaker 3: Got it?
• 2:55
Speaker 1: So I think the big thing is when you got
• 2:58
  Speaker 1: called to standards.
• 2:59
Speaker 3: So how did you do? What did they say to you?
• 3:02
Speaker 3: We want to hear it all.
• 3:03
Speaker 2: Okay, so here's the thing, Like disappointingly, it's not like
• 3:07
Speaker 2: I even did anything fun. Like that's the thing, right,
• 3:09
Speaker 2: Like I was so mad when I had to go
• 3:11
Speaker 2: to standers because it was for the silliest things. I
• 3:13
Speaker 2: was dating this boy. Okay, let's start there. I was
• 3:16
Speaker 2: dating this boot. That was the problem.
• 3:17
  Speaker 3: It's the boy's fault.
• 3:19
Speaker 2: It was the voice fault. So they had this rule
• 3:21
Speaker 2: and I understand why. I'm sure it's liability. Where there
• 3:24
Speaker 2: was a party in Memphis. Of course we're in Oxford,
• 3:27
Speaker 2: and so the rule was you rode the party bus.
• 3:30
Speaker 2: You rode the party bus, no matter what. So we
• 3:32
Speaker 2: jumped on in Oxford, we rode to Memphis. Well, the
• 3:34
Speaker 2: boy I was Dayton, lived in Memphis and he was
• 3:36
Speaker 2: older than I was, and he wasn't wrong. He was
• 3:38
Speaker 2: like this is dumb, Like why do we have to
• 3:40
Speaker 2: ride all the way back to Oxford when I'm just
• 3:43
Speaker 2: going to go to Memphis, Like we don't need to
• 3:44
Speaker 2: do this. This is really stupid. And I was like,
• 3:46
Speaker 2: I'm not saying that, it's you know, not annoying, but
• 3:50
Speaker 2: it is the rules.
• 3:51
Speaker 3: They still have that rule to this day.
• 3:53
Speaker 1: I mean even when I was in my sorority at Ruckers,
• 3:56
Speaker 1: it was the same thing. Whenever there you have your
• 3:58
Speaker 1: form roles or you're you know, you're socials or anything
• 4:01
Speaker 1: that's off campus, they always provide transportation and you do
• 4:04
Speaker 1: need to get on the bus to go back to
• 4:05
  Speaker 1: the house.
• 4:06
Speaker 2: I think it's just liability. But my time basically looked
• 4:09
  Speaker 2: and I'm a freshman. Yeah, I was a freshman, so
• 4:11
Speaker 2: I'm like new and green. I don't want to break
• 4:12
Speaker 2: any rules. And he looks at one of his friends
• 4:15
Speaker 2: that he knew that was a senior tried out and goes,
• 4:16
Speaker 2: do we really have to do this? And she has no.
• 4:18
Speaker 2: I don't worry about it. So he just scratched my
• 4:20
Speaker 2: name off the list, which was so dumb, and we didn't. Anyway,
• 4:22
Speaker 2: I got called in. I was devastated. I felt like
• 4:25
Speaker 2: I was getting like put in front of like the
• 4:27
Speaker 2: whole congregation at church, you know. And it's like one
• 4:30
Speaker 2: of the girls that was on standards board was my
• 4:32
Speaker 2: best friend's future sister in law, and just that alone
• 4:36
Speaker 2: like just scared me to death. So anyway, that's why
• 4:38
Speaker 2: I went. And then they took a Crushed party away
• 4:41
Speaker 2: from me and it was devastating.
• 4:42
Speaker 1: So, well, why do you think it's so scary to
• 4:46
Speaker 1: be sent to standards?
• 4:47
Speaker 2: Girl? I don't know, just something about it, Like, I mean,
• 4:50
Speaker 2: we just had the fear of God, Like I just
• 4:52
Speaker 2: knew there was nothing worse than getting called to standards.
• 4:54
Speaker 2: And we'd always heard about it. I don't know if
• 4:56
Speaker 2: it was like this miss mythical thing that we'd all
• 4:58
Speaker 2: talked about, but like.
• 4:59
Speaker 1: First sure, and also as a freshman, I think that's
• 5:02
Speaker 1: the worst case scenario, like to be sent to standards.
• 5:05
Speaker 1: I think as you get older, you're like, Okay, maybe
• 5:07
Speaker 1: it's not that bad, but as a freshman, it's like,
• 5:10
Speaker 1: my life is over.
• 5:11
Speaker 2: I think you're right. I think because I was so young, right,
• 5:14
Speaker 2: and they took crush party, which was in February, so
• 5:16
Speaker 2: it must have been like the first semester. First semester freshmen,
• 5:19
Speaker 2: are you kidding me? I thought my life was over.
• 5:21
Speaker 2: I was so upset. Now, I think if it would
• 5:23
Speaker 2: have been more junior year, I would have been like, eh,
• 5:25
Speaker 2: you know, it probably wouldn't have been in stressed about it,
• 5:27
Speaker 2: But yeah, scary times never gotten over it. As you
• 5:31
Speaker 2: can see twenty something years later.
• 5:33
Speaker 3: You really wanted to go to that Crush party.
• 5:35
  Speaker 2: Yeah, I did.
• 5:37
Speaker 1: Was that just like another one of your formals?
• 5:40
Speaker 2: Yeah? It was actually the party that the triedouts and
• 5:42
Speaker 2: the Coyos do. I don't know if they still do it.
• 5:44
Speaker 2: It was the Crushed party and it was just super cute.
• 5:46
Speaker 2: You take your date and whatever, and I didn't get
• 5:47
Speaker 2: to go. In. My roommate at the time was a
• 5:49
Speaker 2: Coyo freshman year, so it was a sting for her too.
• 5:52
Speaker 2: She was like, you do get to go to Crush party?
• 5:54
  Speaker 2: And I was like, I can't go to c Yeah,
• 5:55
Speaker 2: it was my life was over.
• 5:58
Speaker 1: In the comment section of your video, you ask people
• 6:00
Speaker 1: to share the most ridiculous reason they ever got sent
• 6:03
  Speaker 1: to standards.
• 6:04
Speaker 3: What was the craziest response you received?
• 6:07
Speaker 2: Okay, y'all those comments were hilarious and I feel like
• 6:10
Speaker 2: there's a whole nother series that could be done behind it.
• 6:12
Speaker 2: But there was this one girl I'm trying to remember where
• 6:17
Speaker 2: she was from. It doesn't really matter that I think
• 6:19
Speaker 2: got in trouble for like hanging around the wrong crowd,
• 6:22
Speaker 2: but it wasn't really even defined like that was the
• 6:25
Speaker 2: problem was they were like, we didn't like who you
• 6:26
Speaker 2: were spending time with you tonight. Well that's super.
• 6:28
Speaker 3: Vague, and how do they get to dictate that.
• 6:31
  Speaker 2: I don't know. That's why I just thought it was
• 6:32
Speaker 2: so crazy. And then of course there was the obligatory
• 6:35
Speaker 2: I danced on the stage. Well, hey, we all know
• 6:37
Speaker 2: you can't be dancing on no.
• 6:38
Speaker 1: Elevations, especially as a freshman before you're initiated. You cannot
• 6:42
Speaker 1: go on any elevated elevated services.
• 6:44
Speaker 2: Yet to this day, my daughter's they're they're young, but
• 6:46
Speaker 2: if some one of them tries to stand up on something,
• 6:48
Speaker 2: I'm like, no, e elevated surfaces lower though, start that behavior.
• 6:52
Speaker 2: But yeah, there were some wild comments in there, but
• 6:54
Speaker 2: I think one was just like being associated with the
• 6:56
Speaker 2: wrong group, which was so dumb, and then something about
• 6:59
Speaker 2: elevated surface. And then of course there's the ones where
• 7:03
Speaker 2: we were holding the drink and you had the letters.
• 7:05
Speaker 2: I mean, those are the things that I understand, but
• 7:08
Speaker 2: I mean, you know, it is kind of silly, the
• 7:10
  Speaker 2: scheme of things.
• 7:11
Speaker 3: I guess, right, I mean, water bottle, same thing, right.
• 7:16
Speaker 2: Exactly, Who's to say this isn't filled with whiskey exactly,
• 7:19
Speaker 2: you know what I mean, it's water.
• 7:21
Speaker 1: Who's to say for moms whose daughters get sent to standards,
• 7:24
Speaker 1: what advice would you recommend they share with their panicked
• 7:27
Speaker 1: kids to calm them down?
• 7:29
Speaker 2: Okay? I think the first, like, if I was talking
• 7:31
Speaker 2: to my younger self, I would prower my children. I
• 7:34
Speaker 2: would probably say, don't worry, you're like twenty years old. Okay,
• 7:38
Speaker 2: this is not going to be the biggest thing that
• 7:40
Speaker 2: ever happens to you. You've got lots of big things
• 7:42
Speaker 2: coming your way in this same end, Like one day
• 7:44
Speaker 2: you'll laugh about it, because that's the truth. It's so true, right,
• 7:48
Speaker 2: So I would probably just say, this too shall pass.
• 7:50
Speaker 2: One day you'll laugh about it. Just go in with
• 7:53
Speaker 2: grace and humility and be kind and do the right thing.
• 7:56
Speaker 2: And at the end of the day, if they really
• 7:58
Speaker 2: want to punish you that badly, then maybe you should
• 8:01
  Speaker 2: rethink things. I don't know.
• 8:03
Speaker 1: What happens actually when you walk through the doors of standards,
• 8:07
Speaker 1: walk us through the process, how you felt walking in
• 8:09
  Speaker 1: and who's there?
• 8:11
Speaker 2: Okay, So I think I have repressed some of this
• 8:14
Speaker 2: because it was so terrifying, But I do remember vividly
• 8:18
Speaker 2: walking through like double doors, right, and being like all
• 8:23
Speaker 2: down and like walking through like double doors and then
• 8:25
Speaker 2: seeing this like table right and they're all facing you,
• 8:29
Speaker 2: and they were probably one two through. I remember who
• 8:32
Speaker 2: was there. There's probably four of them sitting there, and
• 8:34
Speaker 2: they had their little pit pads and their little pens
• 8:37
Speaker 2: and it's like they were taking notes and they were
• 8:40
Speaker 2: getting the facts, you know, And then it was just
• 8:41
Speaker 2: a series of questions like DJ on the night of
• 8:45
Speaker 2: the party, cross your name off of the bus links
• 8:49
Speaker 2: and I'm like, my boyfriended you know that kind.
• 8:54
Speaker 3: Of thing, like I'm so disappointed in you.
• 8:56
Speaker 2: And I just remember like tearing up and being like
• 9:00
Speaker 2: I don't want your old thing that I'm like rebellious,
• 9:02
Speaker 2: I love man to try out. I'm so sorry, hysterical.
• 9:06
Speaker 2: Looking back on it, it's funny. So yeah, that's what happened.
• 9:10
  Speaker 3: That's so funny.
• 9:12
Speaker 1: Is there a type of girl who tends to get
• 9:14
Speaker 1: sent to standards more than others or do you think
• 9:16
Speaker 1: it really could happen to iveryone gully?
• 9:19
Speaker 2: I mean I would just say, by and large, I
• 9:22
Speaker 2: think that if you're a good person, a good friend,
• 9:24
Speaker 2: and you act like a lady, like what are they
• 9:26
Speaker 2: going to call you in there for unlessen me just
• 9:27
Speaker 2: wants to be tacky and nitpicky, which we saw that
• 9:29
Speaker 2: on my comments. There was a lot of that tacky,
• 9:31
Speaker 2: nitpicky you know whatever. But otherwise no, I would say,
• 9:35
Speaker 2: if you just act like, just act like a lady,
• 9:38
Speaker 2: you're representing this rority and it really should be that complicated.
• 9:42
Speaker 2: So no, I will say this. I was the only
• 9:44
Speaker 2: one in my friend group that would go to standards
• 9:46
Speaker 2: like I. But I was. I was kind of the
• 9:48
  Speaker 2: more like I don't say wild like. I mean, I
• 9:51
Speaker 2: think I graduated with like a three six, but I
• 9:53
Speaker 2: think I also had a good time. But nobody in
• 9:55
Speaker 2: my friend group won except for me, So shame on
• 9:58
  Speaker 2: the group.
• 10:14
Speaker 1: Have you ever seen someone get sent to standards for
• 10:16
  Speaker 1: something totally unfair?
• 10:18
Speaker 2: Not myself personally, No, now in my experience, aside from
• 10:22
Speaker 2: which I'm not saying it's unfair, what happened to me.
• 10:24
Speaker 2: I broke the rule. I should have said no to
• 10:26
Speaker 2: the boyfriend. That's the lesson here. Don't let the boyfriend
• 10:29
Speaker 2: tell you what to do, that's the lesson.
• 10:31
Speaker 1: If you could redesign the standards process, what would you
• 10:34
  Speaker 1: change about it?
• 10:35
Speaker 2: I think what I have learned in my career in
• 10:38
Speaker 2: life is that you should lead with curiosity as opposed
• 10:41
Speaker 2: to leading with immediate criticism or assumptions. And so if
• 10:46
Speaker 2: I want, let's just say we go back in time.
• 10:48
Speaker 2: They could have said, at least help us understand what
• 10:51
Speaker 2: happened the scenes out of character for you. You're you know,
• 10:53
Speaker 2: you're one of our rushi's that we loved, and we
• 10:55
Speaker 2: all know you personally. Help us understand what happened at night.
• 10:58
Speaker 2: And I probably would have been like, y'all, I'm so sorry,
• 11:01
Speaker 2: Like my boyfriend just don't want to do this because
• 11:03
Speaker 2: he lived in Memphis, and I caved because you know,
• 11:05
Speaker 2: I love him or whatever, right, And I think that
• 11:08
Speaker 2: that would have been a much better conversation. I'm not
• 11:10
Speaker 2: saying that they could have done it that way based
• 11:12
Speaker 2: on rules, but I think we would have had a
• 11:14
Speaker 2: more productive conversation, in which case I would have been like,
• 11:16
Speaker 2: I know it was wrong, I'm sorry, I'll take the punishment, right.
• 11:18
Speaker 1: I totally agree, Like, basically, don't be too quick to judge.
• 11:22
Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, that's what I would say.
• 11:24
Speaker 1: How does rush culture in the South compare to what
• 11:27
Speaker 1: you've heard about schools up north or out West.
• 11:30
Speaker 2: Honey, I do not think it is the same at all.
• 11:33
Speaker 3: It's definitely not even close to the same thing.
• 11:36
  Speaker 2: I really don't. I mean, being a tried held at
• 11:39
Speaker 2: ole miss, I will say, I mean, and I've had
• 11:40
Speaker 2: a lot of accomplishments in my life, I will say
• 11:43
Speaker 2: it's one of my top accomplishments because it's so darn
• 11:45
Speaker 2: hard to get in there, and uh, you know, it
• 11:48
Speaker 2: felt like an honor that I was at the sorority,
• 11:51
Speaker 2: and I still feel that way. So I don't know
• 11:54
Speaker 2: that it has that same feeling out west right or
• 11:58
Speaker 2: up north. Even like my mom is from OHI and
• 12:01
Speaker 2: she to me she was president of her soorty. That
• 12:04
Speaker 2: Auslorady didn't even exist down here. It doesn't even it's
• 12:06
  Speaker 2: not even a thing, right. I just think it's a
• 12:08
Speaker 2: completely it's a completely different ball game.
• 12:11
  Speaker 1: I couldn't agree more. I think it's a totally different scale.
• 12:14
Speaker 1: I mean, I went to Rutgers University right here in
• 12:16
Speaker 1: New Jersey and listen, so already life in Greek life
• 12:20
Speaker 1: it is big, but the school is also huge. Where
• 12:22
Speaker 1: like Greek life, if you really think about the whole thing,
• 12:25
Speaker 1: it does not take up the whole school by any
• 12:28
Speaker 1: means it's a small portion of it. And of course,
• 12:30
Speaker 1: once you're involved in Greek life that those are the
• 12:33
Speaker 1: people that you surround yourself with and that is your
• 12:36
Speaker 1: social life. But when you really think of the university
• 12:39
Speaker 1: as a whole, I wouldn't say you automatically look at
• 12:42
Speaker 1: Rutgers and think of Greek life.
• 12:44
Speaker 2: Right right, exactly, so so funny enough, this past weekend
• 12:47
Speaker 2: I told you we were in Oxford. There was a triout,
• 12:49
  Speaker 2: a lim thing, That's why I was there, and I
• 12:50
Speaker 2: had my daughters with me, and my oldest daughter. At
• 12:55
Speaker 2: one point I made mention of not everybody does sororities
• 12:58
Speaker 2: and fraternities, and she goes, well, why would you even?
• 13:00
Speaker 2: Why would you not? How would you go to Old Miss? Wait,
• 13:02
Speaker 2: you don't have to go be in a sority to
• 13:04
Speaker 2: go to Old Miss. And I was like, you do not,
• 13:06
Speaker 2: but a lot of people do. It's a really big
• 13:08
  Speaker 2: part of it.
• 13:09
Speaker 1: Well, what's one thing about a Southern sorority life that
• 13:12
Speaker 1: outsiders always get wrong?
• 13:13
Speaker 2: I think there's a lot of negative connotations out there
• 13:16
Speaker 2: and they're just not true. It's kind of like how
• 13:18
Speaker 2: I feel like I have to defend the phrase bless
• 13:20
Speaker 2: your heart a lot on my Southern Studies and Stories
• 13:23
Speaker 2: page that I do because people just assume the negative,
• 13:26
Speaker 2: like they hear bless your heart, and because the truth is,
• 13:28
Speaker 2: it can mean a lot of different things, right, It's
• 13:31
Speaker 2: it's a myriad of definitions. But I think people maybe
• 13:33
Speaker 2: have a negative connotation and think it's cultish or it's exclusive,
• 13:38
Speaker 2: which of course it is exclusive, right, But at the
• 13:41
Speaker 2: end of the day, it's just about lifelong friendships. I mean,
• 13:43
Speaker 2: I have friends that are life long friends. They're the
• 13:48
Speaker 2: closest thing that I've ever had to sisters. We were
• 13:50
Speaker 2: all together this weekend and we all cried because we're like,
• 13:53
Speaker 2: we've been doing this together for so long now, We've
• 13:55
Speaker 2: got little girls that are growing up together, and it's
• 13:57
Speaker 2: just the sweetest thing. So I would say that what
• 13:59
Speaker 2: people do understand, though, sometimes fill in the blanks with
• 14:02
Speaker 2: things that are not necessarily the most positive.
• 14:04
Speaker 3: No, I you know, and it it is true.
• 14:07
Speaker 1: I think that people feel that there's a lot of
• 14:09
Speaker 1: pressure and a lot of you know, maybe, and you're right,
• 14:14
Speaker 1: it is a little exclusive when you are joining a sorority,
• 14:17
Speaker 1: but that's anywhere you could be rushing a sorority down
• 14:22
Speaker 1: in the South out west up north, like, it really
• 14:25
Speaker 1: doesn't matter any sorority that you join. Unfortunately, they are
• 14:30
Speaker 1: picking and choosing who they want to enter their chapter.
• 14:33
Speaker 1: So regardless of the sorority, that exclusivity does happen. But
• 14:38
Speaker 1: it is just a little more intense in the South.
• 14:40
  Speaker 1: But I think it's intense in a good way. It's
• 14:44
Speaker 1: a lot of fun. You have the dances, the houses
• 14:47
Speaker 1: are just mansions. Like everything about it. It's just I
• 14:51
  Speaker 1: think it's a lot. It's just on a bigger scale
• 14:54
  Speaker 1: than anywhere else.
• 14:56
Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you're right about that. The first time
• 14:57
Speaker 2: I took my girls in the house, my daughter, my oldest,
• 15:00
Speaker 2: looked at me and she was like, Mama, you lived here.
• 15:03
Speaker 2: It's like, girl, I show did my life too. Can
• 15:06
Speaker 2: you imagine? I told the president this weekend in this
• 15:09
Speaker 2: already house when I saw her, I said, listen, next
• 15:11
Speaker 2: time you'll do a fundraiser. What y'all need to do?
• 15:13
Speaker 2: And everybody would have been on it from an alumni
• 15:15
Speaker 2: standpoint is you need to auction off like a weekend
• 15:18
  Speaker 2: in the house.
• 15:19
Speaker 1: That would be crazy. Could you imagine if they like
• 15:21
Speaker 1: AIRBN beat it what.
• 15:23
Speaker 2: I'm talking about? You let me in there? Three meals
• 15:25
  Speaker 2: a day, I don't have to do anything. It's like,
• 15:26
Speaker 2: oh my god, it it'd be the best thing ever.
• 15:29
Speaker 1: Any pre rush rituals or superstitions girls swear by down South.
• 15:34
Speaker 2: No, not that I'm familiar with anyone way that. I mean,
• 15:37
  Speaker 2: they don't exist, but I don't. I don't remember any
• 15:39
Speaker 2: sort of rituals or we have to clap our hands
• 15:42
Speaker 2: so many times or we won't get our rushies. We know,
• 15:44
Speaker 2: I remember any of that. It was just hugs and
• 15:47
  Speaker 2: grit and exhaustion.
• 15:49
Speaker 1: Do you think there's tension between sororities.
• 15:53
Speaker 2: Oh, honey, I'm sure there is. I never felt it,
• 15:56
Speaker 2: I mean to me. I mean my my sophomore year,
• 15:59
Speaker 2: I lived with a Coyomega and a Cappa Delta, and
• 16:02
Speaker 2: I was a tried out and we were all good friends,
• 16:04
Speaker 2: and that was never a thing. I'm sure that you
• 16:07
Speaker 2: can find it if you want to. I'm sure that
• 16:09
Speaker 2: that does exist, But I think it's kind of like
• 16:12
Speaker 2: it's what you put your energy toward. And I was
• 16:14
Speaker 2: not gonna put my energy toward any of that. Nor
• 16:15
Speaker 2: did I ever hear any of my sorority sisters say
• 16:18
Speaker 2: anything poorly about other sororities. But maybe I was in
• 16:22
Speaker 2: a bubble. I just didn't hear it. No.
• 16:24
Speaker 1: I mean, my sister goes to the University of Michigan.
• 16:26
Speaker 1: She's in tried out, and now she's going into her
• 16:29
Speaker 1: senior year. But her junior year she lived with all
• 16:31
Speaker 1: of her friends that she met freshman year. And obviously,
• 16:34
Speaker 1: after you rush, you all find your home, and they
• 16:38
Speaker 1: were in different sororities, but they all lived together.
• 16:40
Speaker 3: Their junior year was something they wanted to do.
• 16:42
Speaker 1: After living in the sorority house their sophomore year, and
• 16:45
Speaker 1: it was like the best year of my sister's life.
• 16:47
Speaker 3: And they were all in different sororities.
• 16:50
Speaker 2: Here you go. You gotta get out there and make
• 16:52
Speaker 2: friends with everybody. It's silly to just I think that's
• 16:55
Speaker 2: where the that's where the potential problems come in. I
• 16:57
Speaker 2: am only gonna be friends with the girls in my sorority.
• 17:00
  Speaker 2: That's not healthy.
• 17:01
Speaker 1: Well, what is the most frequently asked question you receive
• 17:04
Speaker 1: about sorority life in the South?
• 17:06
Speaker 2: So Ever since I started my little Instagram page Southern
• 17:09
Speaker 2: Studies and Stories, I do get messages from people asking
• 17:12
Speaker 2: me questions because they know I was, you know, a
• 17:14
Speaker 2: try at ole miss and I had a lady ping
• 17:16
Speaker 2: me the other day and ask me, is it realistic
• 17:20
Speaker 2: that my daughter has to buy all new clothes and
• 17:23
Speaker 2: she has to say this much and she has to
• 17:25
Speaker 2: do that? And I said, Lord, no, that's awful. She's
• 17:27
Speaker 2: not gonna have to do that. That's ridiculous. And then
• 17:30
Speaker 2: I had actually wrote a recommendation for somebody because her
• 17:34
Speaker 2: mama sent me a DM and said, listen, you don't
• 17:36
Speaker 2: know me, but I you know, we're from the same cloth.
• 17:39
Speaker 2: I can tell like Southern rais this this this? My
• 17:42
Speaker 2: daughter is going to ole miss? Would you consider? I said,
• 17:45
Speaker 2: I would send me her resume, send me her details,
• 17:47
Speaker 2: and I'll look at it for you. So I've done
• 17:50
Speaker 2: that right. But I would say at this point, it's
• 17:53
Speaker 2: more like the question that I get is how does
• 17:56
Speaker 2: she get in? Right? What do you do? Is there
• 17:59
Speaker 2: some sort of like secret you can't chat? You be
• 18:01
Speaker 2: to your way into try it all time? You know
• 18:03
  Speaker 2: what I mean?
• 18:04
Speaker 1: What are the top questions girls rushing in the South
• 18:07
Speaker 1: should be prepared to answer?
• 18:10
Speaker 2: Good gravy. I don't remember anybody quizzing me during rush
• 18:14
Speaker 2: other than the standard stuff, right, like what's your major?
• 18:18
Speaker 2: By the way, I didn't know what in the heck
• 18:19
Speaker 2: I was gonna do my freshman year anyway, What are
• 18:23
Speaker 2: you into? Who are your friends, what do you you know?
• 18:25
Speaker 2: What do you like to do fun? I would just say, overall,
• 18:28
Speaker 2: you got to be yourself because if you're not, if
• 18:30
Speaker 2: you create some sort of false image to go through, right,
• 18:34
Speaker 2: then you're gonna end up in a sorority on a
• 18:36
Speaker 2: false premise, and then you're gonna be miserable. Right, So
• 18:39
Speaker 2: you got to be honest or you're not gonna end
• 18:41
Speaker 2: up with your people. Because what I would say that
• 18:42
Speaker 2: wasn't the question you asked me.
• 18:43
Speaker 3: That's where I went, no, no, But you're right.
• 18:46
Speaker 1: I mean, when when you're rushing, I know, the pressure
• 18:49
Speaker 1: could be high and you could feel like you kind
• 18:51
Speaker 1: of want to morph yourself into somebody that you're not,
• 18:53
Speaker 1: but then at the end of the day, you're kind
• 18:55
Speaker 1: of just screwing yourself because then you're not gonna end
• 18:57
Speaker 1: up where you belong.
• 18:58
Speaker 2: So I mean, that's exactly what I mean. Yeah, And
• 19:01
Speaker 2: I would just say have fun with it. I know
• 19:04
Speaker 2: it's scary, I know it's stressful. I know we all cried.
• 19:07
Speaker 2: Lord I did, it was it was exhausting. Exasperating, scary,
• 19:10
Speaker 2: all the things. But at the end of the day,
• 19:12
Speaker 2: I do have really fun memories of it, and it
• 19:14
Speaker 2: was fun, and I would just say enjoy it. And
• 19:18
Speaker 2: I think you kind of know where you're supposed to be.
• 19:20
Speaker 3: Truly, you have a gut feeling well at lease. Thank
