- 2:33Yes, because the holidays are coming up and me and Brian will
- 2:39be traveling back and forth amongst locations whether it be
- 2:43Halifax, the beach or just doing things with our kiddos.
- 2:48And I ain't going to wait much longer.
- 2:51We're not going to confiscate it for our own use, where we'll be
- 2:54handed down every three months to.
- 2:56He said he's not going to be as nice as Jeremy and wait a month
- 2:58and a half to get the PlayStation.
- 3:00And a half. I don't know how all that went,
- 3:03but Robbie, my friend it, well, it's not been a while.
- 3:06We literally talk every day pretty much via text, sometimes
- 3:10a phone call. But how you doing brother?
- 3:12Hanging in there, man, winding down around the football season
- 3:16trying to get, you know, equipment inventories done,
- 3:19things like that. Wife wife's still working with
- 3:24her team. They're starting their playoff
- 3:27run this week. So we're, we're as much as I'd
- 3:31like to just get into watching college football, there's still
- 3:33plenty of, of high school football to go around around
- 3:36here. So we're we're rolling on
- 3:40through it. There we go man.
- 3:45So. Curtis is going to have this
- 3:47meeting problem again this week. Oh, freaking night.
- 3:50Brian took the microphone, told me this one was better.
- 3:52And this one's. You know what it it is better.
- 3:55I never had these issues with with it with it on my end here
- 3:58though, so maybe this is Bruiser air.
- 4:00Real quick, Robbie, I don't know if you mentioned it while I was
- 4:02trying to get plugged back in, but your wife's school still
- 4:05involved second round of playoffs first.
- 4:08Round here in the first round, normally here in North Carolina
- 4:11it'd be the second week, but with all the hurricane and
- 4:13everything and pushed everything back a week so.
- 4:15Acted up a week. They had a makeup week this past
- 4:18Friday night and then playoffs start this coming Friday.
- 4:23So lot of lot of very interesting matchups.
- 4:27A lot of people are going to have to do some, we're
- 4:29travelling to get away, get around some Rd. closures and
- 4:32things like that so could be interesting.
- 4:36Yeah. All right.
- 4:37I mean that that area of the state still, still a little torn
- 4:40up there with the roads there. So it's definitely going to be
- 4:42interesting and just glad they were able to kind of keep that
- 4:46thing going and. There there was one team that my
- 4:49wife was projected to that her team was projected to play.
- 4:52At one point they were from down next to Cherokee and they were
- 4:57going to have to take either a trip into northern Georgia, over
- 5:02to South Carolina and up through Charlotte to get here or to go
- 5:06into Tennessee up and back to 81 down 77 to it was going to turn
- 5:13a four hour trip and do about a 6 1/2.
- 5:17They managed to move the move the parents around a little bit
- 5:20so they wouldn't have to travel quite as much, but they didn't
- 5:23change a whole lot for that for that team so.
- 5:27Yeah, they're, they're kind of isolated there right now, pretty
- 5:29much more or. Less I would guess, yeah, yeah,
- 5:32Interstate 40 and and 20 say the 26 or 24, I think it's 26 out
- 5:39that way is it's kind of cut off you, you really can't go from
- 5:45our area here over to Tennessee without going north or South to
- 5:49go around. Yeah.
- 5:51It's quite a recovery, recoveries working, but it's
- 5:57still a work in progress. A lot, a lot to do out there.
- 6:00So, so you said they was having to go into like northern Georgia
- 6:02and go through Chattanooga? Lord, that was one way they
- 6:06could have gone around. But if they'd have went down in
- 6:08northern Georgia, they'd have come around through like up
- 6:14through Greenville, almost to Clemson, back to 77 and come
- 6:17back. OK.
- 6:18Yeah, because Charlotte. OK, so they were trying to go
- 6:20towards more center of the state then?
- 6:22Yeah. So we're right off of 77,
- 6:25between 77 and Interstate 40 really got you kind of where we
- 6:29sit. All righty.
- 6:32Well, again for that part of North Carolina, not too, too far
- 6:37from where Robbie coaches and lives nowadays.
- 6:40Still again, many prayers. It's still, I believe you had it
- 6:43on the bottom last week, Brian. I'm not sure if you have it back
- 6:46on the bottom this week for definitely a good cause.
- 6:49Take a look at that. But Robbie's here to talk ball
- 6:53with us. Really, Robbie, you told me
- 6:54yesterday you have pretty much watched almost every game except
- 6:58Miami, clearly your coach on Friday night.
- 7:01And Thursday night is kind of, oh, Friday night is kind of
- 7:03tough. Can't watch that game.
- 7:05So but we're going to break it down.
- 7:07We're going to do, we always do something that Robbie basically
- 7:10turned us on to the idea last year of, and that is we've got
- 7:13to talk about the game first before we get into the season
- 7:16stuff because Robbie's got some very, very interesting opinions.
- 7:21I'm not going to say harsh. Some of them are harsh, some of
- 7:23them aren't on the season in general.
- 7:25But we do have to tell the truth Tuesday about what happened at
- 7:29Clemson or against Clemson last week as the Hokies fall 2414 to
- 7:34go to 5:00 and 5:00 and it's the middle of November and the
- 7:37Hokies are five and five again. This is just like last year,
- 7:40almost. Hokies held A7 nothing halftime
- 7:45lead before effectively getting 4.
- 7:47Clemson puts up 24 straight points in the second-half.
- 7:50And when you look at a game like this, it's really kind of weird.
- 7:55But there were some things that went well and I'm going to say
- 8:00this, Kate Klubnik had a run for his life the majority of that
- 8:04game with the amount of pressure, the front 4, some of
- 8:08the blitz schemes that were picking or that Chris Marv sent.
- 8:13And it was a good thing. You know, Hokies force 4 sacks
- 8:17had like an 8% havoc rate, which is a pretty good rate.
- 8:21But let me ask both of y'all, you know, what else did y'all
- 8:24see not only from the defensive side, but other parts that you
- 8:27felt like went well on Tuesday? I'll start with Brian.
- 8:31Yeah, I mean, I think the big thing is the the pressure that
- 8:34that Marv was dialing up. They constantly kept club Nick
- 8:39uncomfortable in the pocket. I think that was the big thing
- 8:42that we saw. Didn't give him a lot of time to
- 8:44to be able to sit back there and and calculate where he wanted to
- 8:48go with the football. A lot of times the plays that he
- 8:51was making were escaping the pocket, throwing down field,
- 8:56shaking a tackle here to there. So, you know, he wasn't exactly
- 9:00getting the the cleanest of looks for most of the the the
- 9:03afternoon there. So, you know, hats off tomorrow
- 9:06and a little bit of a bounce back performance from a, you
- 9:09know, calling standpoint after kind of what we saw in Syracuse.
- 9:13I think overall just a, you know a big bounce back week for that
- 9:17unit overall. I mean, what about you?
- 9:21I, I would say that that the pressure and that was one of the
- 9:25big emphasis is going into this season was, was trying to get
- 9:28more pressure, even though APR had been the pressure man last
- 9:34year, but they wanted to build more pressure all the way across
- 9:38the front. And I feel like they've really
- 9:40done that. And I mean, anybody can argue
- 9:43with me if they want to feel like the defensive line is a is
- 9:47a shining point of this team right now.
- 9:49I mean, they're, they're going out week in week out producing,
- 9:52doing the things that they're pretty good at doing.
- 9:54They, you know, they need a little bit of backup behind
- 9:57them. They're they're secondary is set
- 10:00up for that pressure. A lot of man coverage and a lot
- 10:04of things like that. And it, it, it's tough to do.
- 10:09So I mean, I, I applaud them for for working at that and
- 10:13continuing to try to get that pressure.
- 10:15I'm pretty sure APR is leading the country in sacks right now,
- 10:18right? He is that he's got 13 sacks.
- 10:21He is tied for first with Mike Green from Marshall.
- 10:24So leading it and the and the unit itself has 31, which is top
- 10:2815. They're I think they're on pace
- 10:30to I think they got 36 last year, which was like top 20.
- 10:35They're on pace I think this year.
- 10:36I'd have to go back and confirm my numbers on that.
- 10:38But what what else went well? I mean, they're, they're
- 10:42obviously this thing was pretty much a game until the early part
- 10:45of the fourth quarter. So it was one of those things.
- 10:48But what else did y'all see, Robbie?
- 10:49I'll go to you. Nick.
- 10:50What else did you see watching that game Saturday?
- 10:52Like they're doing this good. I mean, I, I thought they for,
- 11:00for what they're dealing with in some of the positions and things
- 11:03like that, with some injuries and being kind of beat up and
- 11:06some, some lackluster things in places.
- 11:09In my opinion, I thought they played well defensively overall.
- 11:14I thought they'd come down. They had a few coverage mistakes
- 11:19here and there. One they, you know, and that's,
- 11:22that's the joys of, of playing the, the man defense and, and
- 11:28stuff like that. Your coverage when you think
- 11:30something's going it only takes one man to kind of not even stop
- 11:33just kind of ease up a bit to take a look at what's going on
- 11:37and things get away from you quickly.
- 11:39And I mean I I thought defensively played pretty well
- 11:45they scored the first touchdown on special teams, which is
- 11:47something that Virginia Tech's always had you know in their
- 11:52back pocket. Is that that Bieber ball special
- 11:55teams. It was good to see some of that
- 11:57kind of kind of rear its head and.
- 11:59And show some good things. I was, yeah, I was pleasantly
- 12:06surprised with that. A lot of things went fairly
- 12:09well, special teams wise that it seems to be.
- 12:12It seems to have been an issue in the in earlier games at times
- 12:16here and there. But I thought that was a good
- 12:19thing too. And just to see people see some
- 12:22places continuing to try to put things together and continuing
- 12:26to try to find the the best things that they have and
- 12:28continuing to try to push forward.
- 12:31Brian, what else? What else?
- 12:32What about you? What else went well for in your
- 12:35eyes as you were watching the game Saturday afternoon?
- 12:38And I'm going to soon watch a little bit of the replay on
- 12:39Sunday morning. Yeah, I mean, you know, looking
- 12:43at the special teams unit in general, I think they did had a
- 12:46pretty good outing there. I mean, you, you, you open the
- 12:49game off with a pretty good kick return, you know, get yourself,
- 12:54you know, across the 30th, you know, almost across 35 there,
- 12:58you know, really good start to the game there.
- 12:59You had the, you know, the block that got returned for a
- 13:03touchdown to get, you know, first points of the game.
- 13:05You end up going into halftime with that being the only score
- 13:08in the first half. I mean, it's kind of a weird,
- 13:10weird game to watch offensively because, you know, we didn't
- 13:15really do a whole lot, but we were doing a whole lot well,
- 13:17especially when it came time to get off the field.
- 13:19So I'd say, you know, we look at those money downs from a
- 13:23defensive perspective. We did a really good job of
- 13:26capitalizing on situations where we're able to get them in in
- 13:30late downs and be able to get off the field, whether it's, you
- 13:33know, interception, whether it's a turnover on downs.
- 13:38Obviously we already talked about the block field goals.
- 13:41So we had a lot of opportunities out there and we were taking
- 13:44advantage of them on those, those money downs in the first
- 13:47half. Yeah, give.
- 13:50First of all, give special teams big kudos on that, not only with
- 13:56the solid return again, Thomas Williams, one of the young names
- 14:00that we're starting to see a little bit more and more every
- 14:02week. The block, it was younger guys.
- 14:04Burgos got in through that, got in through the left side, which
- 14:08we've seen Clemson give up multiple block kicks.
- 14:12So got in, got his hand up and then quit and reddish again in
- 14:16the right spot, being coached to do the right thing.
- 14:19This is the area you need to be in on a block kick, getting it
- 14:22and then having the knowethal to effectively know get outside.
- 14:27He did not try to because you see some guys probably you've
- 14:30probably seen this ton in high school football guy gets a block
- 14:32kick and just like just starts running and it's like where you
- 14:34where you running to like you run into where everybody is.
- 14:37You could see if he waited, he hesitated and he kind of set up
- 14:40a couple blocks and he got on the outside and ran it all the
- 14:43way back. Peter Moore, I don't want to.
- 14:47Peter Moore kept this game closer than it was because Peter
- 14:51Moore on more than one occasion got them and booted them deeper
- 14:56than they should have been. And, and and and that kept us in
- 14:59the game because it forced them to take longer and longer
- 15:02drives. So yeah.
- 15:05The the. Yeah, and yeah, 20 yards to try
- 15:10to get to where the ball's going to land.
- 15:12I mean that big. It is big.
- 15:16The other piece that I'll say is the run defense.
- 15:22It 167 is what we gave up. But if I told anybody sitting
- 15:27here last week probably would have texted Robbie and saying
- 15:31Phil Mahaffa averaging well over six yards, we kept him under 5.
- 15:36That's good team in general. We kept under 3 or under 4
- 15:40basically 3.6. It's like so as much as it as
- 15:45much as the bad part of the defense showed the last 20
- 15:48minutes of Syracuse bringing the game they brought maybe their
- 15:51best played game all year, forcing turnover sacks, keeping
- 15:56a good running team somewhat behind the stitch.
- 16:01Yeah, at they. At they they, they didn't
- 16:04exactly go out there and like shut them down, but they kept.
- 16:07Them they weren't 1.6 a carry, they were 3.6.
- 16:10But against a team like Clemson, 3.6 is good.
- 16:13So there's your what went well. Now first of all, the what went
- 16:18bad, the the the worst thing that we saw regardless Saturday
- 16:23prayers up for him. Gabe Williams getting injured.
- 16:26Gabe Williams, a someone who was on this program when he got
- 16:31recruited, a great young man to talk with full of energy gets
- 16:36injured has to be, you know, basically put in the ambulance
- 16:39off. I'm not sure the reports on him
- 16:43yet, but again, prayers up for Gabe on that.
- 16:46But also the crazy thing is Robbie, you you said us.
- 16:50He was the one of the guys he's trying to he his leg ain't
- 16:53right. He's trying to get up.
- 16:54He. Tried to get up twice.
- 16:56He tried to make a play. Yeah.
- 16:59So craziness. So that's the really what went
- 17:02bad. Brian, I'm going to pitch to you
- 17:05on this first because it was your big thing that needed to be
- 17:08key. What went bad?
- 17:14I mean, the the game plan was kind of shit, right?
- 17:17Like, so when we look at the the way we decided to attack this
- 17:25team, right? So they're not the best run
- 17:28defense overall that I mean, they're they're they're they're
- 17:33solid, but they're kind of middle of the pack ACC, right.
- 17:37Overall, they're down to defensive line starters and one
- 17:43linebacker starter in this game. And we decided we weren't really
- 17:50going to establish a running game at all, especially from the
- 17:53running back position. And you know, before we go any
- 17:56further, let's go ahead and say we we saw to out there, but
- 17:59Tootin was not anywhere close to 100%.
- 18:03Somebody was there in Tootin's uniform.
- 18:06Tootin was nowhere near 100% and you know, we didn't really give
- 18:12him a ton of touches. The problem I had is that we
- 18:17didn't really give another running back any touches.
- 18:20We didn't give another running back touch.
- 18:24It it was insane. So what lane I think had one or
- 18:26two carries. We we let, we let Kyron run for
- 18:31about what, 9 or 10 times and. Then we ran 5.
- 18:36Yeah. And then and then you get, you
- 18:38know what, 2 net 3/2. Net 4 at 4:00 and me and Robbie
- 18:45talked about this. Brian, I think I've texted you
- 18:48as well. You know how many plays Tude was
- 18:50on the field? Well, like 50% of the offensive
- 18:54snaps. 30 yeah, and Coney was on the field the other 30.
- 19:02Yeah, and we and we didn't throw the ball enough to not have
- 19:06gotten Coney involved in this offensive game plan.
- 19:09And if you know that you're running your your your primary
- 19:12weapon is injured. Your other primary weapon, at
- 19:17least in the running game is coming off an injury.
- 19:19And definitely also did not look himself either in Kyron drones.
- 19:25And you don't give the number 2 running back in this game at
- 19:29least because Thomas is out any carries.
- 19:33That's malpractice, man. That's malpractice.
- 19:36That's that's not that's that's not taking care of your players
- 19:39that are coming back. That's not that's not taking
- 19:42advantage of the weapons that you have available to you.
- 19:46And I think that's the bigger problem that I have is that we
- 19:49saw Coney, you know, a couple weeks back-to-back, make some
- 19:54big plays, been very effective in the running game and you
- 19:57don't give him a single carry. And he was on the field 30
- 20:01times. Yeah, that was the bigger issue.
- 20:05He's he's been effective in the past and and yeah, you recruited
- 20:10him for a reason. Give him that a shot.
- 20:11You got him on the field 50% of the plays in the game right
- 20:15here. Give him something.
- 20:17See what he can do. You know, if he's losing yards
- 20:19every play, I get it. But I mean, you got to find
- 20:23something. Well, the more irritating part
- 20:26about that, me and Robbie, me and you talked about yesterday,
- 20:29Robbie, was, it's not like you said a saying go, Brian.
- 20:33It's not like Coney was all, this is the first time he's ever
- 20:36played. He freaking had 10 yards of
- 20:40carry against Syracuse. He broke a big one.
- 20:43And if he didn't break a big one, he was still getting
- 20:46roughly about 6A pop. Like you said, Brian, it's
- 20:50malpractice that he was not involved in that game plan,
- 20:54whether Malachi Thomas or not. Robbie, you said something to me
- 20:58yesterday. I don't you kind of back it up
- 20:59now because you were you were you asked.
- 21:01We kind of talked through it. How many how many games can I
- 21:05got a red shirt? Four, yeah, I can appear in four
- 21:09games and as long as that rule is still the same, I don't, I
- 21:13don't think it's changed, but they can appear in four games.
- 21:19So where was the freshman? The freshman from down your way.
- 21:22We were talking about that, Brian, like, OK, here's your
- 21:24chance. Get him to play against
- 21:27competition. You are down running backs and
- 21:29you can say, well, they're not ready.
- 21:33I want to say you're playing right now if if you're out there
- 21:35struggling and we were mightily struggling on offense.
- 21:40I mean that depth charge depleted.
- 21:41Give some guys some run, man. You got your, you got your.
- 21:45Your two top backs are one's banged up to the point of being
- 21:49ineffective. The other one is not playing in
- 21:51this game. You have to get them involved in
- 21:55this game plan. Have to.
- 21:58Yeah, I just I mean, you're you're depleted it running back
- 22:03anyway. You've got, you know, one guy on
- 22:07the field injured. You've got another guy out hurt.
- 22:10You've got another guy I I'm assuming this hurt too.
- 22:15And and prelude. You're muted, Curtis.
- 22:22PJ Kirk PJ Like broke did something bad with the bottle.
- 22:26Yeah, yeah. I mean, you've got several
- 22:28injuries, you're at home, so I mean, there's no travel, you
- 22:32know, there's no restriction on the number of travel.
- 22:35So there's no reason the kid shouldn't have been there
- 22:37dressed and ready to play if they needed something.
- 22:39Play. I mean, that that's my look on
- 22:41it. But the.
- 22:44Question is. What do you have?
- 22:45I've seen enough of Mason playing that I feel like he's
- 22:49definitely got something they can play because I mean, he is
- 22:52from, he is from Mount Airy down here, 40 minutes away.
- 22:58The, the team my wife works with plays them.
- 23:01They're conference opponents. I mean, he he's legit.
- 23:06I mean, I don't see why I was a reason not to give him some kind
- 23:10of shot. Or somebody else.
- 23:12I mean, like, yeah, anybody on your depth chart should have
- 23:16gotten a carry in in this game other than drones and Tooting,
- 23:20but somehow nobody else in that in that backfield got a single
- 23:24touch. And Mason had not played a game
- 23:26this year. It's not ultimately played a
- 23:29game. If if we were going out there
- 23:31and we were running the football effectively, then OK, if they
- 23:36don't get, if they don't get carries, they don't get carries.
- 23:37It is what it is. But when you are that
- 23:40ineffective offensively for the majority of the game, like
- 23:43you're, you're seeing like little sparks here and there.
- 23:45You have a good play here, good play there, but you can't string
- 23:47a damn drive together to save your ass and you don't give any
- 23:51of these guys touches. It's wild this.
- 23:56Is like the this is what we'll talk about some of the stuff
- 23:59later with Robbie, just more his observations on the season is so
- 24:04we've seen again, it's what you kind of said, Brian.
- 24:07It's the ebbs and flows of this team.
- 24:10Last week, not last week, two weeks ago the the offense puts
- 24:1430 plus up. The defense just looks like shit
- 24:16for 20 minutes of the game this week.
- 24:19The defense against a very talented roster.
- 24:22Whether you like Dabo, hate Dabo.
- 24:25He's indifferent. They have talent.
- 24:28Kate Public was not that high rated just for shits and
- 24:31giggles. He is a good collegiate
- 24:33quarterback. Phil Moff is a good running
- 24:35back. Some of their wide receivers are
- 24:37good players. They held that team down for the
- 24:41better for a whole half and kept them in check for a good part of
- 24:462nd. Half other other than another
- 24:49disastrous third quarter, we we, we played very, very good it.
- 24:53Was 14-7 after the third quarter, though.
- 24:55Go ahead. You're about to.
- 24:56He's about to. Close down with the, the, the
- 24:59Ethan's, the the Cadence and the caves and the and the all those
- 25:04guys might have been a little bit better than we thought they
- 25:06were. Some of them were.
- 25:08Might have been a little bit better than we gave them credit
- 25:10for to start with. They came and played, they came
- 25:13and played straight up. So let me ask this because
- 25:18obviously that went bad. The money downs were not good.
- 25:20That's something he caught my eye.
- 25:22When you're like 2 of 15 on 3rd down, you're you're not going to
- 25:25win many at all. So, but the other thing that
- 25:33like just what went bad in general for the offense as well
- 25:39was the Rops because we were 16 to 37 and then there were 6
- 25:47total drops, I believe. And a couple of them, nobody
- 25:51was, I mean, it was it was good passes by Colin, it was good
- 25:55passes by Kyra. And that in in a game like this,
- 26:00it drives you crazy because on a couple of those, if they're
- 26:04caught, it's momentum swings, it's flipping the field, it's
- 26:07potentially getting into a field goal range where things
- 26:11potentially change different. Anything that y'all saw where
- 26:14guys just was a nerves, where they take their eyes off the
- 26:17ball, something I can't look for?
- 26:22You know, I didn't really see anything that stood out to me as
- 26:25far as like just just technique or, or anything like that.
- 26:29It's just in the in, sometimes in that crunch time, like you,
- 26:33you just try to pull it in, you don't pull it in.
- 26:36And and it wasn't necessarily one guy that we saw it from.
- 26:39We kind of saw it from a handful of different guys.
- 26:42I mean, we look at drops on the year.
- 26:46It's really, it's been kind of a problem throughout the year.
- 26:51But in this game it was definitely a a big problem just
- 26:56just as much in my opinion, as some of the the things we saw
- 27:01with with play calling, not necessarily, you know,
- 27:05deployment of personnel, but just play calling in general.
- 27:08As much as play calling was a problem in this game, I think
- 27:10drops were a problem in this game because both of those kill
- 27:12drives pretty pretty significantly throughout this
- 27:15one. Yeah, I I can agree with that.
- 27:20The, the drop balls are going to hurt you every time because
- 27:23they, they give you, not only do you not gain yards out of it,
- 27:28but you receivers start to get a little bit of doubt in their
- 27:31mind about, you know, what they're doing.
- 27:34They start to think about or why didn't I catch that, especially
- 27:38as a trend that keeps going. They, they start to players
- 27:43start to think about things like that and you can't let that
- 27:46doubt kind of creep in. I, I guess is what I'm trying to
- 27:50get to. We, we deal with some of that
- 27:54sometimes with some of our high school kids.
- 27:56And it's a lot easier with the high school kids to let that
- 28:00doubt creep in because they're obviously in, some of them are
- 28:04in the same level of, of what Virginia Tech has.
- 28:07But those things, they kind of, excuse me, unless you really get
- 28:14a handle on them quickly, they can snowball very quickly.
- 28:17And, and that's not that that turns into a bad thing.
- 28:20Well. That that's also really
- 28:22important with a team like Virginia Tech that still, you
- 28:27know, unfortunately still at this point still grasping for
- 28:29some identity and still playing up and down relative to where
- 28:34their confidence level is at a given moment in time.
- 28:38And drops are going to kill confidence, like you said there.
- 28:43So when you got a team that is still very confidence dependent
- 28:47in terms of how the flow of the game goes, that can really hurt
- 28:51you. 100% All right, let's flip over this and I'm going to start
- 28:57off with mine and then y'all can follow up with yours.
- 28:59But anything that happened we were not prepared for.
- 29:02And one thing that I was not prepared for and it shows in the
- 29:07stat lines and in my eyes and maybe my eyes deceive me.
- 29:11Clemson only had one sack, but our pest protection held up
- 29:16better than I thought it would. Now I know they were missing 2
- 29:19studs with Capehart and oh what's his name?
- 29:23You talked about them all last week, Brian.
- 29:25It's not TJ Parker, the other kid.
- 29:29Oh Peter. Peter.
- 29:33But still. Clemson is a middle of the road
- 29:37sack team. Wish Sheldon was here.
- 29:39You'd probably give us where they are on pressure rate.
- 29:41But when I see that and there were times where Kyron had time
- 29:45to make the pass and you could tell a couple times he wasn't
- 29:48pulling the triggers and and I think and some people are going
- 29:51land based him, but he's coming off a foot injury and y'all both
- 29:56played. I know both of y'all broke your
- 29:58legs in high school. Brine ankle.
- 30:00Robbie, I remember when you broke your leg.
- 30:01Robbie. I do remember that.
- 30:03Please believe it or not, boys, I was like 25 years ago.
- 30:05Take a deep breath. It was an ankle, too.
- 30:07It was an ankle, yeah. But tell me like land based him
- 30:12all you want, but it's like, well, if a guy's coming back
- 30:15when you you're hitting that foot, if it don't feel right, I
- 30:19can see where you're not going to be as confident or you're not
- 30:21going to pull the trigger as quick.
- 30:22I get that. But for me it was more the
- 30:25offensive line and how it held up because I did not foresee the
- 30:29offensive line playing like that pass protection wise on
- 30:31Saturday. What about y'all?
- 30:34Anything you were not prepared for?
- 30:37I was definitely not prepared to go into halftime with a a
- 30:40special teams touchdown being the only points on the board.
- 30:43Yes. And for, for good or I'll like
- 30:48honestly looking at the the way that first half, because I was
- 30:51like, this is not going to be a good situation for us because I
- 30:54don't see us necessarily improving significantly
- 30:56offensively. And despite the fact that we
- 30:59were up 7 nothing, they were in our our territory a pretty good
- 31:03amount in that first half. They just didn't come away with
- 31:06any points. And some of that was because of
- 31:08good plays on money down. She had an interception, he had
- 31:10a block field goal, you know, but some of that was, you know,
- 31:14they decided to go forward instead of taking some points
- 31:17and we just made some plays And you know, they left some points
- 31:21on the field in the first half that I felt like, you know, they
- 31:24they could have definitely been, you know, plus one, you know,
- 31:28plus 3, whatever, whatever the situation could have been there
- 31:32scoreboard wise. But we go in up 7 after all that
- 31:37craziness in the first half. Very, very good defensive game.
- 31:41If you like watching defense. I mean, that's a pretty good,
- 31:44good half of defense because, you know, we we made some plays
- 31:49there. We just couldn't string drives
- 31:51together. They made some plays and strong
- 31:53drives together, but couldn't finish them.
- 31:56And, and and there was a whole lot of good defensive played in
- 31:58that first half. So really, really impressed by
- 32:02that on both sides of it. And like I said, did not expect
- 32:05to go into halftime with the just one special teams touchdown
- 32:09being the only points all. Right.
- 32:11What about you, Rod? Anything you are not prepared
- 32:13for sitting down? Were you at the house watching
- 32:15the game? Yeah, sitting, sitting here kind
- 32:18of, kind of by myself watching it.
- 32:20Oh, I'm sure that's great. That's one of those great
- 32:22feelings. You get to sit and watch
- 32:23football game by yourself. Yeah, it's, it's kind of
- 32:25enjoyable. The big thing I was not prepared
- 32:28for was, you know, when, when you first turn it on and you and
- 32:32you see Tooting warming up, you see drones warming up.
- 32:36They're OK, they're playing. They've got to be, they've got
- 32:39to be ready chomping at the bit full speed, ready to go.
- 32:43I, I was, I wasn't expecting them to look as ineffective and
- 32:49as as kind of limped up as they were.
- 32:52I I feel like I in my mind, I kind of expected they were
- 32:56prepared to go considering they didn't play last week, that they
- 33:01were going to be ready to go. And I just even from the start
- 33:06with both of them, they didn't look like they were Tooting
- 33:10looked more like a decoy and drones looked more like a a a, a
- 33:20whittle captain of I got to be out there for my team.
- 33:25But knowing that he's not going to be as effective as as he
- 33:28could be and that I wasn't prepared for just seeing both of
- 33:32them in the starting lineup. I was much more prepared for for
- 33:36a fight out of those two. And not saying that they didn't
- 33:40have the fight in them, but physically they they just
- 33:43didn't. Yeah.
- 33:45It's it's, it's sometimes it's, it's the it's the doing right,
- 33:49it's the doing right. Like you're ready for it and
- 33:51then you start doing it's just like it doesn't feel right.
- 33:55It doesn't feel right. Big shout out here from Lavar
- 33:58and and that stinks because a they I mean the way they were
- 34:03out there. I mean it was a couple times I
- 34:04remember I saw two to pick up a blitz and you know, and I know
- 34:08y'all know from like picking up a blitz on like the way he did
- 34:11on a hurt foot that had to hurt like a.
- 34:14Mother. So there's some things we were
- 34:17not prepared for. So I mean, the only other thing
- 34:21you can say is should they have, and again, this is the second,
- 34:27then maybe this is the game planning Brian was talking
- 34:29about. If you knew they weren't
- 34:31completely right, should you have just said guys get right,
- 34:35like get right? Like you're not 100% there.
- 34:39But I'm sure, again, probably to your point, Robbie, they
- 34:41probably like no coach. This is the biggest game.
- 34:44I you know, if we win this game, we still might can make the 8th
- 34:47week. Things got to happen.
- 34:49We still might can make it a Charlotte coach.
- 34:51And it's, it's, it's, it's a coaching thing in my mind.
- 34:56Like you look at had they had they won last week and all of
- 35:02that still on the table, having to do everything.
- 35:05Then I see those two guys giving everything.
- 35:08They got half, you know, 68% of whatever they were standing when
- 35:15they took the field that day. But the fact that it went down
- 35:19last week the way it did and coming into this, you've got to
- 35:22kind of look, I mean, tooting's done after this year, right?
- 35:29Drones effectively could be back.
- 35:33You've got to protect that kind of investment.
- 35:36Really. I mean, I, I get, I get from a
- 35:40coaches perspective, and you're going to put the best thing you
- 35:43can out there. And if you think those two at
- 35:4570% are better than what you have backing them up and gives
- 35:49you the best opportunity, you go with it.
- 35:51But at some point, you know, what are you winning out of
- 35:55this? If you win the game and lose
- 35:56both of them for the rest of the year, you know, that kind of
- 35:59thing. And they just, they didn't look
- 36:03effective. And that that was kind of the
- 36:06unexpected part. Well, more to that, like not
- 36:09identifying that earlier in the game, like you, you waited till
- 36:13very late to go to Schlee. You never really went to anybody
- 36:17else other than two. And even though you had somebody
- 36:20else on the field for a lot of snaps, like at some point you
- 36:23got to figure out I've got to generate offense and I'm, and
- 36:26I'm not having success with my studs for one reason or another.
- 36:31You know, injuries, you know, the, the mental piece of it
- 36:35there. There's, there's a lot of things
- 36:37out there that these guys were not at 100% in this game.
- 36:42And you got to weigh that like, all right, they're out there.
- 36:46If they're not, if they're not able to play at the at that
- 36:49percentage, are they potentially putting themselves in a
- 36:53situation where they can get more seriously hurt #1 #2 if I'm
- 36:58not generating offense, if they are not being effective in what
- 37:00I'm trying to do schematically on offense, I need to do
- 37:04something different. Yeah.
- 37:06And that that was either not addressed or was addressed so
- 37:10late it didn't matter. Yeah, All righty, we'll move one
- 37:14last piece here before we flip it over and talk to some Robbie,
- 37:18a little bit more about this season.
- 37:21We'll start with Brian on this. Brian, what is something better
- 37:24this team can do moving forward? Because as of right now, it's
- 37:28five and five. Got to win one of the next two
- 37:31to become bowl eligible. What some of the team can do
- 37:34better moving forward. Something they can do better
- 37:38moving forward. That's a tough one, man, because
- 37:43I I. Feel.
- 37:44Win, win. Win, win's a very good high
- 37:47level one. Yeah, I mean, let's let's win
- 37:50two more games and at least say you're better than you were last
- 37:53year, right. So I don't think, I think the
- 37:58problem that we had and the problem that we're facing with
- 38:02this team and. I don't know.
- 38:09Brian froze. Oh man, the tally.
- 38:13The tally magic is coming to Brian's I.
- 38:15Was fully expecting that to be my problem at some point, didn't
- 38:18I? Oh, you got Starlink right?
- 38:20No, no, no, no. I'm on spectrum now.
- 38:22Spectrum. Yeah, we got out of there.
- 38:24We got out of the bottom. OK, Brian.
- 38:28Brian All right, Robbie, you said when anything else they can
- 38:33do better moving forward? Just got a got to get some
- 38:38consistency and and multiple facets of the game, find an
- 38:43identity and push through. I'm kind of, you know, I'm kind
- 38:47of in and out of this whole podcast thing.
- 38:49I I show up every once in a while when you guys give me an
- 38:51opportunity. But I follow a couple of couple
- 38:55other different podcasts here, Virginia Tech wise and listen to
- 38:59some of them. One of them suggested yesterday
- 39:01that the urine atrocity to put be put back.
- 39:04And I guess that's one of the things that that's going to be
- 39:07helping. I don't know if y'all heard any
- 39:09about that, but I caught AI caught a quick piece of it on a
- 39:13TikTok and some some different things.
- 39:15And if I can remember the name right off the top of my head, I
- 39:19would throw it out there. But it was quite amusing to to
- 39:22hear them talk about that. But I don't know if that that
- 39:27that seems like more of a long term thing just to get ready for
- 39:31for the next one is take this week that that they have off
- 39:37kind of get healthy, find some things that they know they can
- 39:41really capitalize on. And and then and then go to go
- 39:46to Durham and, and try to put something on the field that, you
- 39:51know, it's fully competitive top to bottom four quarters, you
- 39:55know, and multiple facets of the game because Manny Diaz and that
- 40:00crowded Duke, they're going to they're going to they're going
- 40:04to be riding a little high after beating NC State and.
- 40:06They're going to, they're going to push some things and, and,
- 40:10and try to force them into doing some things.
- 40:13So I really think going forward, they need to make sure that they
- 40:17like stay focused on getting healthy, stay focused on getting
- 40:19that identity and figuring out what they want to do.
- 40:22They got two weeks to prepare for that game.
- 40:24So I think that's a big thing for them.
- 40:26And, and just find some things that work.
- 40:29If if it means Tooting their drones or whoever is not
- 40:33available for that game, figure out who is going to be available
- 40:37and and find the best place that that are going to put them in
- 40:40the best situations and make those things work.
- 40:43Brian, what were you saying before you you pulled a tally
- 40:45and pros? Yeah, I apparently have Alabama
- 40:48Internet tonight. Shit, what the hell was I
- 40:53saying? It sounded really good.
- 40:55And then you just pros. I was talking about, you know,
- 40:59we got to win the game when and, and I think, you know, when we
- 41:03look at this team, I think we're recalibrating what the
- 41:08expectations of this team were and what they actually are.
- 41:13And you know, right now what they actually are is basically a
- 41:17slightly different version of what we saw last year.
- 41:20That's talking, that's coaching, that's that's talent, that's
- 41:24that's a little bit of everything.
- 41:25And and we thought they were going to be, we thought they
- 41:28were going to take a progression level step plus add in a couple
- 41:33of new pieces that we were pretty, pretty happy about.
- 41:36And I think, you know, some of those pieces have have done
- 41:39pretty well when we look at the defensive line, I think everyone
- 41:43that's played significant snaps. Has played well.
- 41:46Has played well and I, I don't think you have a whole lot to
- 41:50really complain about from that front.
- 41:52I think Brumfield's been OK. I think from a leadership
- 41:56standpoint, we've seen his play matter more than we have
- 41:59necessarily from, you know, high in, you know, he's not going out
- 42:04there and causing havoc, but he's also a guy that's pretty
- 42:08much where you need him to be most of the time.
- 42:11And sometimes that's that's better than the alternative.
- 42:14And, and, and we've seen that kind of kind of be be the case
- 42:18this year. You know, so we've had these
- 42:21pieces come in that we were, we were kind of excited about.
- 42:24We had some spots we were a little bit worried about.
- 42:26And I think the the biggest thing that, you know, I think
- 42:29that has taken a little bit of a step back is that we thought we
- 42:32were going to be a little bit more explosive in the passing
- 42:36game. And we just have not been an
- 42:37exclusive passing team at any point of the season outside of a
- 42:45play here or there, right? We we, we will have a player to
- 42:47a game where we look like we could that's the team that we
- 42:49could have been. And but we what we haven't
- 42:51really put all those pieces together like we expected to
- 42:54this year and have those, you know, games like Syracuse last
- 42:59year where we just kind of, you know, blew teams out and
- 43:02overwhelmed them in in various ways.
- 43:06Our offense has not been quite as dynamic, I think consistently
- 43:11dynamic as we expected to be. I think we expected this team to
- 43:14be more or less a slightly better version of the product we
- 43:20saw to close the year last year. We expected.
- 43:24And we reset, we hit, we hit the reset button a little bit.
- 43:26We could we took a we took a step back and it took us almost
- 43:29a month to really get back to that level.
- 43:32And I think in some ways it's improved.
- 43:36I think the running game overall is probably a little bit better
- 43:40than it was at any point last year.
- 43:42But I think, you know, you got tape on what drones can do and
- 43:46coaches have have went to work on taking away the things he
- 43:50does well and giving him some problems in the things areas
- 43:54that he's probably not as polished in.
- 43:57And that's been a problem. And we haven't really had a
- 44:00great counter punch to that. So, you know, we're
- 44:04recalibrating those expectations and we're we're realizing that
- 44:08we're, we're basically kind of what we were last year maybe a
- 44:11little bit better and we're playing a schedule that's a
- 44:14little bit less forgiving. 19th toughest schedule in the country
- 44:18this year. I don't think we expected that
- 44:21out of the gates definitely. But as far as what we can do
- 44:25better moving forward, as we kind of wrap Tell the Truth
- 44:27Tuesday up, I think they've got to figure a way to play some of
- 44:31the young guys in meaningful situations.
- 44:33Not garbage, but you've got to get them out there to get the
- 44:37game speed in their head. Not just special teams.
- 44:41I'm talking about plays all over the place.
- 44:45So, you know, that's where I am. Brian, you said a lot of good
- 44:48stuff there. We're going to continue that
- 44:50conversation with Robbie. I just want to give a shout out
- 44:52to a few people here. First of all, one of our loyal
- 44:56listeners, Andretti, always good to hear from you.
- 44:59Andretti up in Philly, blood country kind of with you, Brian.
- 45:06We expected to average 30, allow 17 and it's been averaged like
- 45:0926 at give up like 20-3. And that's when effectively
- 45:14Jim's Josh is kind of right there with you too.
- 45:18But it's one of those things where it's five games by 31
- 45:21points, it's five games by 31 points and, and I know Robbie
- 45:27got. To win.
- 45:28Exactly. He's got to win.
- 45:29We talk about that all the time, the high school levels you got,
- 45:32you don't, you can't just win. You have to learn how to win.
- 45:36You have to know how to win. And when you, when you're in a
- 45:39lot of those tight games like that, it comes down to knowing
- 45:42when to really put the foot down defensively and, and, you know,
- 45:46cut off the airway on that thread or really drive things
- 45:50down. And and you know, as we always
- 45:53talk about, run the ball when you when the other team knows
- 45:56you're going to run the ball and.
- 45:58Just do it. And Curb song, those things,
- 46:01Curb song, you have to learn how to do those.
- 46:04And what I was talking about with the with the the funny
- 46:08parts of that podcast about what could have went wrong.
- 46:11It was the V the Virginia Tech for Legends guys on the podcast.
- 46:17Oh yeah. So Grayson went on that.
- 46:18Grayson and Joe went on that. Race Grayson Wimbish and he's
- 46:23he's talking about the urinal troughs and sharing the Turkey
- 46:26legs and man, I laughed at that thing for I don't know how long
- 46:30listening to them talk about that Grayson is.
- 46:33Fucking hilarious. We love having Grayson.
- 46:34On here. Don't worry, I have a feeling
- 46:36you and Grayson are going to be sharing the same screen about a
- 46:39month or right at about 5 weeks from today.
- 46:43Yeah, day was. Sounds like pencil.
- 46:47It in on your calendar. December 20th is the tentative
- 46:51state of the program day. I know school schools ended for
- 46:53y'all on the 20th of December so you can and you don't have good
- 46:57Internet service so you won't go in and out like last year.
- 47:00Actually, you won't have to travel to South Boston the next
- 47:02day, so nobody will be angry with.
- 47:04Me. Yeah, exactly.
- 47:05Trying to figure when their last day of school would be there.
- 47:08I think it's like the 18th, 17th, something like that.
- 47:11Yeah. So you will be, you will be well
- 47:12prepared for that. But anyway, by the way, that is
- 47:15going to be, we are looking right now tentative date,
- 47:18December 20th. It's a Friday night because I
- 47:21ain't stupid enough to do that thing on me work day.
- 47:24I will have to be hungover the next day.
- 47:27If my wife tells me to run errands, I can live with that.
- 47:29I cannot live with going to work with hangover.
- 47:31All right, real quick, as you all know, we are brought to you
- 47:34by the Count Stanley Pharmacy in Blacksburg, another person who
- 47:37will be joining us on that wonderful day in December,
- 47:41Doctor Jeremy counts. He is effectively the one that.
- 47:43Kicked that thing tradition like.
- 47:45In none other. The question is will the baby
- 47:47make an appearance this year like last year, which will be
- 47:50interesting. Cal Stanley Pharmacy your family
- 47:53neighborhood pharmacy three O 1 S Main St. in Blacksburg while
- 47:56we continue talking with Coach Robbie Compton here.
- 48:00I had long time buddy Robbie again.
- 48:04Robbie has pretty much got to watch every game this year,
- 48:08which he is very proud of because being a high school
- 48:10football coach, sometimes it gets tough.
- 48:12And we bringing Robbie's opinion on because a, Robbie has
- 48:17obviously been on Virginia Tech numerous times, he said in coach
- 48:22meeting rooms. And we wanted to ask just Robbie
- 48:24some questions, not only from his perspective of knowing the
- 48:28staff, but just from his perspective of going to like
- 48:31AFCA clinics, going to other coaching clinics, getting to
- 48:34know these guys. We've got some things we want to
- 48:36unload on him and he kind of wants to unload too because he's
- 48:40had to hold this in for 10 games other than texting us
- 48:43occasionally being blowing off. But we got a few things we're
- 48:46going to ask him, and I'm going to let Brian kick that off.
- 48:49Yeah, man. And you know, we've got to get
- 48:52like Nuggets here there throughout these 10 games, you
- 48:57know, and I think, I think sometimes, you know, as a, as a
- 49:01coach, you kind of understand I've got to, I've got to see a
- 49:06little bit more before I actually make this assessment.
- 49:09I got to see a little bit more before I actually make this
- 49:11assessment. So at the start of the year, the
- 49:13criticism was like, it's there, but it's getting better.
- 49:16It's there. But I, I, I see something.
- 49:18And then as it goes on, you know what?
- 49:20This is a trend, guys, we got it.
- 49:22We got to, we got to start talking about this a little bit
- 49:24more. So I'm going to start here.
- 49:28Why do you feel? This team has an offensive
- 49:30identity issue. There's from watching the things
- 49:39that I see, there doesn't seem to be enough consistency and
- 49:47trust and, and what they're trying to do.
- 49:53We know they can run the ball, especially when healthy.
- 49:56I know when you get injuries, it's kind of stacked up and it
- 49:59hurts. It hurts tremendously.
- 50:02But we, we, we talked about the, the returning receiver group.
- 50:12They're coming. And it almost feels like it
- 50:14didn't. They haven't been used quite as
- 50:16effectively, quite pushing the boundaries with some of those
- 50:19receivers like the the game against Clemson, while you
- 50:26always want to have your one and two backs in there with Thomas
- 50:29and and and Tooting. But you got these guys, you
- 50:34recruited these guys, you saw something in them that you would
- 50:37trust. Why are they not getting the
- 50:40opportunity? Why are we not continuing to
- 50:42put, if we're going to be in build an identity on running the
- 50:45ball and running RP OS off of that run and attacking those
- 50:49things? Why aren't we, you know, why
- 50:52aren't they pushing those things?
- 50:54Why are they continuing to do that?
- 50:56It almost feels like they're they're kind of holding back and
- 50:59and not committing to anything particular.
- 51:04And I don't, I don't, I just kind of don't understand why.
- 51:08Now, if there's been injuries since the beginning of the
- 51:10season that they've been fighting, then maybe that
- 51:13answers the question. But you know, I the, the biggest
- 51:17issue is it doesn't look like there's been a commitment to
- 51:21working certain things. And I, I, I worry about that.
- 51:26Can I ask you this, Robbie and me and you hit on this?
- 51:29Me and Robbie had about a hour long conversation yesterday and
- 51:32that happens with me, him, Ryan sometime with Jason too
- 51:36probably. Better in stay holiday.
- 51:37Yeah, he'd have to work. I was sitting here working,
- 51:39doing some things in the background.
- 51:41But I want to ask you this, go back to those first few games
- 51:44and when you when you and you said it to me yesterday when you
- 51:50didn't see the pocket roll a lot those first couple games.
- 51:52Yeah. And and I'm sure you go back
- 51:54last year like that shit worked because because you talked about
- 51:59a couple times from a defensive perspective with who Kyron
- 52:01Drones is, you roll that pocket, Whoever that's linebacker is on
- 52:05that side of the ball is in a fucking mind because if you
- 52:09choose to go attack him, he is a good enough and and Shelton has
- 52:12showed this. He's a good enough intermediate
- 52:14passer. He's probably going to complete
- 52:15the ball to what's behind you. If you don't attack him, he's
- 52:18going to go angle to sideline. He's going to get four to six
- 52:21yards. When you see that where it's
- 52:23like it's a bread and butter play.
- 52:25You rolled the pocket, you got some positive almost every
- 52:28fucking time. And you don't see a person call
- 52:31that. And I know it's been, oh, it's
- 52:33been scouted more, but still, if that linebacker stays home, it's
- 52:38still four to six yards, right? Every time.
- 52:41When you see that out of the playbook, what does it say to
- 52:45you as a coach? Like, what does that say to you?
- 52:47Like why isn't that there? In my question, in my mind, it
- 52:52immediately questions why isn't it?
- 52:54And like I said, is it because he's Karen hadn't been as
- 53:00effective doing those things? Is it because he's dealing with
- 53:05some kind of injury since the beginning of the season that is
- 53:08not going to allow him to do that as much?
- 53:10I mean, I, I know these coaches, they don't have to answer to us,
- 53:16you know, but like, you kind of wonder exactly why, you know, as
- 53:23a fan, you're going to look at it and go, this was so effective
- 53:26before. Why isn't it?
- 53:28Why aren't you doing it now? And there has to be a reason
- 53:30behind it. And that's part of what I
- 53:35wondered. I mean, it has drums been beat
- 53:37up since spring ball or since fall camp that that's causing
- 53:43some of these issues? Is there they just don't trust
- 53:48decision making? Do they not trust the is some
- 53:53trust been lost in the receivers and and with the drops and
- 53:56things? What's the reason behind not
- 54:00doing those things? We can't see that our biggest
- 54:03question. Well, and and and but I'll let
- 54:05you chat and you're saying and but that's the whole piece is we
- 54:08don't understand. It's if he's it will a if he's
- 54:12injured, then why are you still plowing him into the line?
- 54:15If he's still injured? That is the first thing is he is
- 54:18he still injured? But then it's it's I'm going to
- 54:20put up with Josh said here because I like what he said
- 54:23right there. I mean, obviously he's a little.
- 54:30Yeah, he's somewhat, but at the beginning of seasoning team it's
- 54:32like that he doesn't know what he's trying to do himself.
- 54:35He's like, well maybe I need to do this and I need to do that
- 54:37versus, you know, there's always bread and butter plays.
- 54:41I mean, y'all, y'all know who I'm a fan of with the Niners?
- 54:47We all we all have our teams right Right now for for each
- 54:53three of us. Robbie gets to be happy this
- 54:55year because his Washington boys are rolling.
- 54:57Brian, your team still fighting still not out of it.
- 55:00But for example, go go go to all three of us bread and butter.
- 55:05San Francisco plays outside zone if ain't shit else working
- 55:08outside zone. Robbie, you starting to see
- 55:11stuff with Daniels this year where it's like there's the
- 55:13bread and butter right there. If they run that play, it's
- 55:15going to be positive. Brian with you.
- 55:17It's probably a little inside trap with Quentin Nelson and
- 55:21Frickin Taylor following them up in the hole.
- 55:23It should be. But it we sit here and it's
- 55:26there's no bread and butter in the bread and butter that we saw
- 55:29so much last year. Some of the RPO's?
- 55:33Have we thrown an RPO slant any this year?
- 55:37It's I've seen a few. It's been mixed in there, but it
- 55:39it not to the frequency that it. Was last.
- 55:42Year, all right. Sorry.
- 55:44I'd say just RPO in general has been a lot less frequently
- 55:49deployed in the offense this year for one reason or another.
- 55:54I think we've seen we've, we've, we've seen some of the, the zone
- 56:00read elements that we saw, you know, towards the back half of
- 56:03the last year. I think the thing that changed
- 56:05the most is that, you know, when it comes to the drop backs, I
- 56:09mean, it's it's very much pocket focused or at least primarily
- 56:14pocket focused. And whether that's an emphasis
- 56:17by Bowen to try to, you know, round out Kyron's skill set,
- 56:21whether that's just an emphasis of the offense to give them more
- 56:28whole field reads or more dynamic reads from the
- 56:31quarterback position. And instead of cutting the field
- 56:34in half like you kind of do with the rollouts.
- 56:37I don't know what the what the the thought process is, but at
- 56:41some point you got to understand who your personnel is and what
- 56:44they do well and if. You're not.
- 56:46If you're not leaning on those things, you're doing a
- 56:49disservice to that personnel. Yeah, but that's kind of a
- 56:52that's a little bit of a old way of thinking right now.
- 56:55You know, I got to get I got to Polish him up in the pocket,
- 56:58things like that, get him ready for the NFL game, that kind of
- 57:01thing. The NFL games evolving to to
- 57:04what he's good at. It's evolving to those kinds of
- 57:08things. So why why sit there and try to
- 57:10focus so much on the polished pocket passing when so many of
- 57:15the NFL teams are working towards not using as much of
- 57:18that? I mean, of course you still got
- 57:21some that are going to use it. I mean, it is what it is.
- 57:24But you know, you've you've got them.
- 57:26Lamar Jackson's Jayden Daniels, the you know, the Anthony
- 57:31Richardson when he can not be tired enough to play.
- 57:34And I'm honestly say the minute he tapped his own helmet and
- 57:42took yourself out of the game, I dropped him for my fantasy team.
- 57:45He was behind my Holmes anyway. But I mean that just those kinds
- 57:51of things. I mean showcase what he's got.
- 57:55I mean, if he, if he can play in the pocket and do those things,
- 57:57he'll show it when they need him to.
- 58:00He can work on those things. But you can't.
- 58:02You can't let that be the detriment of the team that's
- 58:04trying to Polish that one player for something like that.
- 58:08And I would hope that's not what they're doing, but.
- 58:10I would not either. You can't take the biggest
- 58:13strength of what Karen Drone was last year and try to put that in
- 58:17a box. Yeah, because it wasn't that.
- 58:20It wasn't that and so. You know, I think also like it's
- 58:24it's the confidence piece of it too, because you know, I'll
- 58:29throw the comment up here. Where is it here?
- 58:33Who's Oh yeah. So let's talk about this right.
- 58:37So let's talk about this. If y'all haven't noticed, and
- 58:41we've got now almost two whole years, you know, pushing that at
- 58:45least of of watching Kyron play football.
- 58:48When Kyron is a comfortable and confident player, that spills
- 58:55over into the type of output we have week to week.
- 59:00You're able to get him comfortable and feel like he's
- 59:04in the right flow of the game early on.
- 59:09He is a lot more efficient as a passer when he doesn't get into
- 59:14the flow of the game early on. It is very, it's roller coaster
- 59:19it, it's very much play dependent, it's very much scheme
- 59:22dependent. It's not necessarily he's going
- 59:24out there and just crisp, crisp, crisp.
- 59:27But when he is feeling it, when he is confident, you get a whole
- 59:31lot more of that. And I don't think we've done a
- 59:34good enough job early in games getting Kyron comfortable in the
- 59:40offense where he plays with that peak confidence level that he
- 59:44needs to be his best. Yeah.
- 59:48Got you. All right.
- 59:49I'm all I'm all flip away from the offense because we can my
- 59:52line that. But Robbie, you are a defensive
- 59:55coordinator. You've coached defense mostly
- 59:57all of your 20, not 20. Is it 20?
- 1:00:00Years 2021 years high school football.
- 1:00:04Yeah, and. We owe holy shit.
- 1:00:05Hey deep breath Robbie, you've coached high school football 20
- 1:00:07years, but in in your opinion, let's go to the defense because
- 1:00:10the defense is regressed as well.
- 1:00:11If y'all want to know defensive and offensive regressions, these
- 1:00:14teams both finished around the 50 mark last year in total
- 1:00:18offense total. I always look total offense,
- 1:00:19total defense, not point score. Because, you know, take a look
- 1:00:22at the Boston College game, they were within a touchdown and had
- 1:00:26like 7 yards of offense and they were within a touchdown.
- 1:00:30To me, the total offense, total defense says I am consistently
- 1:00:34moving the ball or I'm consistently not letting the
- 1:00:36ball be moved. We're 83rd and 80.
- 1:00:38You take some of the luck out of.
- 1:00:40Exactly. You take the weird bounces.
- 1:00:43I always look at that. You can't win a game with 500
- 1:00:46yards offense in three points. It's fair, but if you.
- 1:00:50Have it. Depends on what you want.
- 1:00:52It depends on what you want to assess.
- 1:00:53And I get that and but I think both of those are valid points
- 1:00:56depending on what you want to assess.
- 1:00:58But if you want to assess can you consistently move the ball
- 1:01:01and can you consistently stop teams that are moving the ball,
- 1:01:04looking at yards is more important than points.
- 1:01:06Can I ask a question Robin? If you find 503, I want to see
- 1:01:10it. I will watch that game beginning
- 1:01:12to end because that will be the most impressive fuck up when
- 1:01:14somebody got inside the 15 yard line.
- 1:01:16First, Steelers won a whole lot of football games in the late
- 1:01:2090s, early 2000s around there, with Jerome Bettis running for
- 1:01:2425 yards and three touchdowns and winning games 21 to 14.
- 1:01:29Exactly. It's crazy.
- 1:01:31It can be done, but let me ask this.
- 1:01:33Let's go defense as the defensive coordinator.
- 1:01:38Look through the lens, what has been the most disappointing unit
- 1:01:41this year? It obviously ain't the defensive
- 1:01:43line, so we can already take that one out because you already
- 1:01:45said that they're probably the best unit of the whole team.
- 1:01:48Yes, I have to say, I think it's the linebackers.
- 1:01:54I really do like you. You had a you had a height guy
- 1:02:00coming in from in the inside backer position coming with
- 1:02:04Brumfield. And while I think he he's he's
- 1:02:07done fairly well, it hasn't been it hasn't they haven't stood out
- 1:02:16at anything. You know, they had their issues
- 1:02:19of, of making reads and filling where they were supposed to
- 1:02:22against Vanderbilt in the first game.
- 1:02:26They've done better against downhill running teams, you
- 1:02:29know, coming in filling gaps, but they're they're very
- 1:02:34athletic, very quick players, but I don't see a legitimate
- 1:02:42hole filling monster linebacker that's going to play hash to
- 1:02:47hash. I I just don't feel like they
- 1:02:51have that play. And we may be spoiled for years
- 1:02:55of of Hollyfield and. Vince all all.
- 1:03:00Through this one, because my wife worked with the Matua
- 1:03:03Puaka. You know, you don't have that
- 1:03:06kind of just downright nasty linebacker.
- 1:03:11Well, you got to act sometimes. But is it to you Robbie too in
- 1:03:15this case, even though if they weren't the nasty feel like that
- 1:03:21you kind of me and you were kind of talk about it too.
- 1:03:23Is they're at this stage at this stage, it's three years.
- 1:03:30They're they're a lot of times they're making plays because of
- 1:03:32athleticism, not because of, I don't want to say been taught,
- 1:03:37but effectively been taught to read the keys know exactly where
- 1:03:40to go. Is that why maybe even more
- 1:03:43disappointed because it's not like, OK, it's the first time
- 1:03:46you're trying to teach the kids to do it.
- 1:03:48Yeah, I feel like the place that they are making is because of
- 1:03:50their athleticism, not because of the scheme and the the things
- 1:03:55that they're trying to do. And that's what that bothers me
- 1:03:58more than anything. OK, I don't know that the that
- 1:04:02the scheme is is there for what we're going to run against.
- 1:04:07In some ways they're they're very athletic and I think that
- 1:04:13makes up for a lot of things. But that athleticism will take
- 1:04:18you out of position at times too.
- 1:04:20You can over pursue things, you can overrun things.
- 1:04:22We saw a lot of that early in the year, linebackers
- 1:04:25overrunning things, getting caught in washes, things cutting
- 1:04:28back behind them. Vanderbilt took full advantage
- 1:04:31of a lot of those things in the first game.
- 1:04:34And I mean, those kind of things hurt.
- 1:04:37And I think, I think having that linebacker that kind of
- 1:04:41consistently knows the schematics and, and reads and
- 1:04:47keys and not just relying on his athletic ability.
- 1:04:51I mean, bottom line there, we've had some really good linebackers
- 1:04:55that weren't the most athletic, fastest sideline to sideline
- 1:05:01tight linebackers and they've been very effective.
- 1:05:06So I mean that that's a big thing I'll look at.
- 1:05:12Yeah, I agree with you. And I mean, when we look at, you
- 1:05:16know, you talk, you talk about the discipline piece of it, you
- 1:05:20know, we had a whole game looking at the Rutgers game
- 1:05:23where they just ran that RPO over and over and over and over
- 1:05:27and we just didn't have an answer for it.
- 1:05:31So I mean it, it's been kind of one of those very inconsistent
- 1:05:36performances from that group overall.
- 1:05:38I mean, I think Woodson is for still being a young player is
- 1:05:42he's a freshman, He's the most talented.
- 1:05:44He's a red shirt freshman in. That group, he's he's showing
- 1:05:48himself to have that capability and I don't know if he's he has
- 1:05:52the capability to to play inside.
- 1:05:54But yeah, I think I think he's getting to a point where he's
- 1:05:59going to be the future at that position for this unit.
- 1:06:04But we outside of that, we've got guys that they can be
- 1:06:08disruptive, but they're not consistent.
- 1:06:11And I think that's. We're not disciplined.
- 1:06:13Exactly. And it's not always just
- 1:06:15discipline, but it's, it's the consistency the of play from,
- 1:06:20from these guys. And it sometimes it ebbs and
- 1:06:23flows in terms of effort. Sometimes it ebbs and flows of
- 1:06:26turn in terms of techniques. Sometimes it ebbs and flows in
- 1:06:29terms of discipline There. It's so it's, it's, it's
- 1:06:33something different every week. And that's why it's hard to
- 1:06:38really get a gauge on what to fix or what you think needs to
- 1:06:43be fixed because you're getting kind of different information
- 1:06:46week to week. And that's, that's a reflection
- 1:06:48of coaching because it's showing that you're not, you're, you're
- 1:06:54chasing an answer instead of going out there and breaking it
- 1:06:58down to the nuts and bolts and building up that foundation that
- 1:07:01you need to. You're chasing the adjustment
- 1:07:04rather than having a game plan and a definite set idea.
- 1:07:11You're like. You keep throwing the bubble gum
- 1:07:13on the leak. Yeah, and now you got this one
- 1:07:17handled. Now you got another one over
- 1:07:18here. So you chewing another damn
- 1:07:20piece of bubble gum and throwing it on that leak?
- 1:07:22You just got to get some damn flex seal man.
- 1:07:29Like that? Like that I, I think just with
- 1:07:34the linebackers, I think that still it's that piece, that
- 1:07:37Brian Utah, it's consistency, it's a we'll got.
- 1:07:40I'm going to put what Josh put up here just a second ago.
- 1:07:45College linebackers will still overrun plays.
- 1:07:48Yes. They will still shoot the wrong
- 1:07:50gap, but the question is if it's four out of every 10 times
- 1:07:55versus one or two out of every 10 times, Because if it's four,
- 1:08:01you don't get burned. And to me, that's where we are.
- 1:08:03We're at like it's four times out of 10, not 2 or one time out
- 1:08:07of 10. It's that it's what Brian just
- 1:08:08said. It's consistency.
- 1:08:10We understand it's going to happen.
- 1:08:11It's the Rutgers game when you know the play they are running.
- 1:08:15First of all, as a coach, I'm sure you have grabbed people by
- 1:08:18the mask and say stay with your man.
- 1:08:22I don't care what they are doing, stay with your man.
- 1:08:28I haven't done that this week, season here the last week, but.
- 1:08:34Well played. Stay with your.
- 1:08:37But what if he's running this way?
- 1:08:39I don't care. But Mr. Young, there's got a
- 1:08:42point. I mean, that's kind of what I
- 1:08:44was talking about with some of these linebackers.
- 1:08:47You know, they're so caught up in the fact that the, you know,
- 1:08:52the weak side backer can catch the guy running the damn stretch
- 1:08:57on the strong side and running down.
- 1:09:00But the minute that quarterback pulls it while he's trying to
- 1:09:03chase that down and comes back to where you just were, that
- 1:09:06athletic ability, that speed is negated because you're not
- 1:09:11making reads. You're not taking
- 1:09:12responsibilities for what's there.
- 1:09:14You're too busy worrying about being the athlete and I, and
- 1:09:18that's either not being taught or it's a part where there's too
- 1:09:26much freedom being given to make that decision.
- 1:09:31Yeah, Robbie, talk a little bit about the kind of free flow
- 1:09:35linebacker techniques that they're being taught and how
- 1:09:38that can kind of get you into these problems.
- 1:09:42Like I looked at some of it when when we were there at the thing
- 1:09:48and it's it's more of a of a reading certain key game in,
- 1:09:56game out. They're going to have different
- 1:09:57keys, different teams are going to give you different things.
- 1:10:00They're reading those keys and looking at those things.
- 1:10:02But it's almost as though the linebackers aren't necessarily
- 1:10:09specifically gap responsible. And it's just following those
- 1:10:13keys and reading the keys and attacking.
- 1:10:16And what's happening is they're seeing these keys and people are
- 1:10:20starting to throw false keys at them.
- 1:10:23So they're they're doing certain things.
- 1:10:25That's where those RPO's and the the the zone reads and the
- 1:10:30things like that really hurt you.
- 1:10:32When you start looking at a certain key and it's flowing,
- 1:10:35they start using that key against you.
- 1:10:38Yeah. And I feel like I saw.
- 1:10:40It with we had we had some double pullers in Clemson.
- 1:10:44Yes. And and they chased the pulls
- 1:10:46and the and club Dick was going going to the left and had a wide
- 1:10:49open fucking alley. And that, that's part of that
- 1:10:52whole thing. You know, you come back and it
- 1:10:54always comes back to, you know, if you're going to if you're
- 1:10:57going to flow that way, then you have to have a spy on the guy.
- 1:11:00They can they can come out to back to hurt you exactly whether
- 1:11:04it be that quarterback or whether it be a a counter back
- 1:11:07or something like that. You have where your.
- 1:11:09Spy helps. That's where your your backside
- 1:11:11edge setter is going to be like. There's going to be guys that
- 1:11:14you're going to need to have that backside contain
- 1:11:18responsibility if you're going to flow that heavy to wherever
- 1:11:23those keys take you. To to me at the high school
- 1:11:26level, when we're going to, when we're going to flow that heavy
- 1:11:28with our linebackers and we're going to we're going to fight to
- 1:11:31this particular key. Then I use a lot more zone
- 1:11:36coverage behind it because I have other guys as DBS and
- 1:11:40safeties or somebody that can come down and help if that's the
- 1:11:44case. Well, it's really hard to to
- 1:11:47follow those keys so hard when you're going to lock things up
- 1:11:51in man looks you, you have less people because they're going to
- 1:11:55be responsible for one person. You don't have that security
- 1:11:59back in. They're not looking at the
- 1:12:01backfield. Yeah.
- 1:12:03Like if you, if you've ever tried to run a defense, if
- 1:12:06you've ever tried to run against an option offense and play man,
- 1:12:10it's it's of a gun because they're going to line up a
- 1:12:12receiver and just running straight down the field.
- 1:12:15DB has to go with him. And now you don't have an, you
- 1:12:17don't have extra protection on that age.
- 1:12:20Everybody has to be exactly right.
- 1:12:23And I think part of that is kind of what they're running into as
- 1:12:26well with a lot of the man schemes and stuff that they run
- 1:12:30and things. Not saying that there are bad
- 1:12:31things, but you lose some of that extra that added
- 1:12:36protection. Like I like to set up a lot of
- 1:12:39my defensive stuff to where I almost have a bonus guy in most
- 1:12:42situations. So a guy that's not necessarily
- 1:12:46locked on the anything in particular.
- 1:12:49And I try to put him to a place where I know it's going to
- 1:12:52benefit me more than anything else.
- 1:12:56And so I play a lot of zone coverage.
- 1:12:59Now I get I have to understand where my holes are when I do
- 1:13:02that and where we're vulnerable, but I mean, I make my
- 1:13:10linebackers completely gap responsible.
- 1:13:12Now, whether they are gap responsible, but you know, given
- 1:13:18a gap responsibility because I don't have those crazy athletic
- 1:13:23linebackers like they're dealing with got you.
- 1:13:26And we still get caught up in in flow of stuff even when we're
- 1:13:30gap responsible. So I mean, it's, it is what it
- 1:13:34is, but I like something needs to be adjusted there in some
- 1:13:39way. If if you're going to keep free
- 1:13:41flowing that quickly in the front, you better have some
- 1:13:45protection backside for it. Let me ask you this question and
- 1:13:48this is, you know, some, some for me, some for some for people
- 1:13:51listening and watching here. The benefits, I think I think we
- 1:13:55understand that, you know, one of the benefits of free flow is
- 1:13:59that you can be a little bit more disruptive with your
- 1:14:00linebackers, right? Yes.
- 1:14:02But what are some of the other benefits of of being less
- 1:14:07explicitly gap responsible and having a little bit more of a
- 1:14:10free flow with your linebackers? Is it like for example is is it
- 1:14:17better adjustment when there's like motion pre snap?
- 1:14:24Possibly a good possibility. Like there's benefits and and
- 1:14:31there's pros and cons to each one, to any of them, obviously.
- 1:14:36But like you have to understand what the group as a whole is
- 1:14:43going to be able to provide. And I know they get to, they get
- 1:14:47to pick their guys to fit into what they want to do, where I
- 1:14:51kind of have to fit what I'm going to do with the guys that I
- 1:14:55have. Yeah.
- 1:14:57And the crazy thing is with a staff is, you know, is
- 1:15:01relatively new as this crowd is, they may not have all guys that
- 1:15:08they can fit into their scheme that they have to kind of adapt
- 1:15:11the scheme to the players that they do have.
- 1:15:16Because believe it or not, even it being in the third year,
- 1:15:19there's some positions out there that these guys are coaching
- 1:15:21that they didn't recruit any of those players.
- 1:15:23It's. True.
- 1:15:26Definitely not from high school. Definitely not from high school.
- 1:15:30But the, the, the free flowing thing, it allows you to kind of
- 1:15:35to flex more and move more. It allows the front to be able
- 1:15:40to move around with motions and changing sides of the strength
- 1:15:44and things like that, because then they don't have to shift to
- 1:15:48find their new gap and things like that.
- 1:15:51It also allows you sometimes to get more people to the point of
- 1:15:54contact as long as they're reading the keys properly.
- 1:15:58It's when you read the keys improperly and there's no one on
- 1:16:01the backside and the next thing you know it's sometimes.
- 1:16:04It's not necessary. Sometimes you read the key
- 1:16:06exactly the way you you're supposed to, but the key was put
- 1:16:10there for a reason. Is to take mind off of another
- 1:16:14area so that they can go back in it.
- 1:16:16That that's the whole point of his own right.
- 1:16:20It's a false key. You said it earlier, it's a
- 1:16:22false key. Back when Brian and I were
- 1:16:24playing, the way to do that was called a counter.
- 1:16:27You know, you, you get the lineman to step one way, you
- 1:16:30step this way and then you pull 2 back to the other side, you
- 1:16:32bring him back. OK, that was the counter.
- 1:16:36Oh, now you got the zone where you send the guy and you pull a
- 1:16:38guy out there in front of him and then you bring this H back
- 1:16:42in and lead up here and have your quarterback follow it on
- 1:16:45the backside. So when you get that free
- 1:16:47flowing linebacker chasing the pool there, there's nobody
- 1:16:52there. There's one guy left over there.
- 1:16:54He's a, you know, the backside backer or the safety coming down
- 1:16:57or something and then he's getting ISO from that H back and
- 1:17:00the quarterbacks pulling around behind it and.
- 1:17:03Then and then once they think they figure that out, you mix
- 1:17:05them some split zone and and and fuck with them a little bit more
- 1:17:09with with their gaps. All right, let's move on.
- 1:17:13Robbie got a few more things I want to hit with you here.
- 1:17:15I want to talk about game management next, because that is
- 1:17:18a point of contention amongst the hokey community right now.
- 1:17:23I'm going to ask you this first so we can we we know where you
- 1:17:26stand. You're part of a high school
- 1:17:28staff, yes. Are you, do you have any
- 1:17:30responsibilities of game management from your role?
- 1:17:35Yes, which is so we all know. Well, I am the defensive
- 1:17:42coordinator and I, I have, I have pretty much free range to,
- 1:17:48to operate as I need to on the defensive side, you know, as far
- 1:17:53as making the decisions of what to do when and, and when to
- 1:17:58blitz. And you know, I have that kind
- 1:18:01of autonomy for those things. The head coach that I work for,
- 1:18:04we've been coaching together for Jesus 1617 years, something like
- 1:18:11that. We there's a lot of times in
- 1:18:14football games, the two of us know what each other are
- 1:18:16thinking. He knows when I'm going to blitz
- 1:18:19certain things. He knows when I'm going to
- 1:18:21attack certain things. I know when he's going to run
- 1:18:23certain plays on offense. And it's just kind of a, you
- 1:18:28know, we have, we have that work.
- 1:18:31We're on that same page. And the good part is we ain't
- 1:18:36game situations Defensively. I get a little hard headed and
- 1:18:42things at times there. There's been times where I was
- 1:18:45talking about having the ability to call a time out.
- 1:18:48There's times he calls a time out while we're on defense
- 1:18:51because he looks at me, he's like, hey, you need a time out.
- 1:18:53And I'm like, no, no, these guys got to figure out what the hell
- 1:18:56is going on and and nut up and fix it.
- 1:18:59And he goes, well, we're going to call a time out and you're
- 1:19:01going to tell him how to fix it. I mean those kinds of things,
- 1:19:09but there's there's a lot less thought process.
- 1:19:14Well, I don't want to say it that way.
- 1:19:17I was going to say there's a lot less thought process in the game
- 1:19:19management part on defense, but there's not.
- 1:19:22I mean, you got the the object of it is tackle a man with the
- 1:19:25ball, keep him in front of the states.
- 1:19:27It comes down to true. There's a lot more game
- 1:19:30management to it on the offensive side all.
- 1:19:33Right. Do you have a responsibility on
- 1:19:35that side of the ball? I don't know that I would say I
- 1:19:39have responsibility as much as I am looked at as somebody that I
- 1:19:46can give sound advice and I know particular situations and what
- 1:19:51statistically should be the best call in certain situations.
- 1:19:54All right. So, so hold on, does Dave buzz
- 1:19:58you when it's 4th and three from the 50 yard line, you're down to
- 1:20:01points middle of the third quarter?
- 1:20:04Yeah, he'll ask. And what do you think?
- 1:20:07OK, what? What?
- 1:20:09What should we do right here? What's 4th and 3:50 What's there
- 1:20:13we go I'm I'm gonna go here we go 4th and 345 yard line.
- 1:20:17You're down to points 2119 10 minutes left in the game.
- 1:20:23So you got a little bit of game left.
- 1:20:24What do you do? What what is first of all, I
- 1:20:27know there's the sheet, but you said y'all have y'all's own
- 1:20:29sheet, right? Like there's the sheet and then
- 1:20:32there's your own sheet. Statistically, statistically
- 1:20:35with 10 minutes left, you're you're in the plus 8 minute
- 1:20:39mark. Yeah, the the right idea is that
- 1:20:42you're only down to points. You don't have a field goal
- 1:20:44kicker that can kick it from the 45 yard line because that's a
- 1:20:475253 yard field goal. Something like.
- 1:20:51That high school, we don't have that guy.
- 1:20:53Some colleges you don't have that guy.
- 1:20:55Let's just face it, because that'll give you the lead.
- 1:20:58You get a field goal. Statistically, it says you
- 1:21:02should probably punt. Try to pin them inside the 10
- 1:21:04inside the five, which you can do in in many situations in
- 1:21:10college game and and play it out.
- 1:21:14You got to trust your defense in that situation.
- 1:21:16Make a stop there, not allow them.
- 1:21:19It's hard to run 10 minutes off of a clock.
- 1:21:22Unless you army Chelsea that drive, by the way.
- 1:21:24Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:21:27Did did that make you cringe the different first?
- 1:21:29I know. Did that make you cringe, The
- 1:21:31defensive coordinator saying that?
- 1:21:33It could, yes. It's very well.
- 1:21:34Can we? Got four more?
- 1:21:37Yards, it's it's going to tell you you should go for it.
- 1:21:39I mean, you should, you should go ahead and stop it.
- 1:21:42You should punt it and and do everything you can defensively
- 1:21:46because if you could pin them inside the five, you can get
- 1:21:50pressure, especially in Virginia Techs way right now get
- 1:21:53pressure. You might can get a safety out
- 1:21:55of it. You might can get them to have
- 1:21:58to punt from in the end zone and then who knows what can happen
- 1:22:04now us at a high school level, we we crossed the 50.
- 1:22:09We're probably going for it there you.
- 1:22:11Go. And and what our thought process
- 1:22:14is, OK, we only need 3 yards, we're going to go for it.
- 1:22:17So we're going to, we're going to have our 5 yard hitch routes,
- 1:22:20we're going to have our middle screen like a hot screen from
- 1:22:26the back coming out, try to drop it underneath and and get what
- 1:22:30we can. If they're blitzing, we should
- 1:22:32be able to drop it behind the blitzing backer, things like
- 1:22:34that. Well, in high school you always
- 1:22:37have that added part of, OK, my hitch is covered.
- 1:22:42My hot route, that one backer didn't blitz, he's sitting in
- 1:22:46the middle on it. OK, I can chunk it high and
- 1:22:48float it 30 yards and it's essentially a punt because 8 out
- 1:22:54of 10 high school safeties, in their mind, I'm catching an
- 1:22:57interception, I'm catching this basket.
- 1:23:00He catches the ball to four or five yard line and the receiver
- 1:23:03that's going down there, his intention is not to go catch the
- 1:23:06ball for a huge ass Hail Mary touchdown.
- 1:23:08This, that guy catches it. I got to tackle him as quickly
- 1:23:10as possible, you know, get that benefit in college.
- 1:23:16Most of those DBS are going, I knock this down, that ball goes
- 1:23:20back up there in high school. These kids are going
- 1:23:24interception, interception and they're going to catch it.
- 1:23:27And some of them might fall down trying to take off running
- 1:23:29before they get their feet on the ground.
- 1:23:33I speak from experience. I mean, those situations are
- 1:23:40there's always a statistically expected way to do it and
- 1:23:45they're they people put together sheets and all of this of plus
- 1:23:4910 minutes under 8 minutes. Oh Lord, that's awesome.
- 1:24:00We don't play South Stokes anymore but I'd love to.
- 1:24:06Got me thrown all off all. Right, there's what we do.
- 1:24:09But we, we've always, when you got those sheets and you got all
- 1:24:12of those things and I mean, you could put together binders and
- 1:24:17binders of situational things, but can you look through that
- 1:24:22binder in 25 to 40 seconds that you get on the sideline to make
- 1:24:26a decision? Now you're making a decision
- 1:24:29from here and you're going with, you know, you have every coach
- 1:24:33that's ever put it together, a game plan for a week has
- 1:24:36situational things that they're expecting that could happen and
- 1:24:39that you have to be prepared to do.
- 1:24:41And inevitably, every game you get into, all of those
- 1:24:44situational things that you practiced all week aren't going
- 1:24:47to come up. And the ones you didn't practice
- 1:24:49with. But Rob, you were telling me
- 1:24:51with that though, you said you feel like y'all have the index
- 1:24:56card, right? You have cards that basically
- 1:24:59you say, you say the one reason Dave comes to you every time is
- 1:25:03pretty much you got it memorized.
- 1:25:07The time out, yeah, we'll take a time out kind of thing is, is in
- 1:25:13my head, the two point conversion versus PAT is always
- 1:25:17in my mind and the punt versus go for it to an extent is in
- 1:25:24there. Have the the idea of you know
- 1:25:29what statistically is said should be done in those
- 1:25:31situations. Now do we follow those not all
- 1:25:35of them. The ones that we follow the most
- 1:25:38is probably the PAT versus 2 point.
- 1:25:42I mean, if, if you're, if you can tie it with the PAT, you
- 1:25:46kick the PAT, but if the PAT is still going to leave you down by
- 1:25:501, go for two. Because if you, you go for 2:00
- 1:25:55and you miss it, now you're down by two.
- 1:25:57The field goal still gets it. I mean, those, those things are
- 1:26:01just, you know, those little things.
- 1:26:05But what it comes down to, man, you can, you can look at all of
- 1:26:08those things you want to, you can cover all of those different
- 1:26:12cards and books and statistics and all of that.
- 1:26:15Bottom line is when when you make a decision, you have to
- 1:26:19stand behind it and you can make that decision and people would
- 1:26:24go, oh, he made this decision. He's got balls.
- 1:26:27And when it goes right rocks. It's because you were, you were
- 1:26:33and you. But when it goes wrong, you're
- 1:26:36the dumbest son of a gun. It's ever made that decision and
- 1:26:40there was no way you could be right.
- 1:26:42So Robbie, let's let's, let's talk about one of those, then
- 1:26:45let's talk you. Watched it, I told you it's
- 1:26:49coming. Yeah.
- 1:26:52If if, if you're a coach and you if you watch the, you watch the
- 1:26:55team run out the clock with 29 seconds left and a field goal
- 1:27:00kicker that's good for 50 plus with three timeouts in their
- 1:27:03pocket. What do you say 31 points that
- 1:27:07has scored 31 points, Not that it scored three or six, that it
- 1:27:11scored 31 points. You need 40 to 45 yards to get
- 1:27:15into your your kickers field goal range and you got 29
- 1:27:18seconds three time outs. And you, you, you take those
- 1:27:21time outs and you flush them down the toilet along with that
- 1:27:2329 seconds to play for overtime with your, with your defense
- 1:27:27that has been consistently getting gashed the entirety of
- 1:27:30the second. Half it's AI know exactly what
- 1:27:34you talk about it it it comes down to coach Woh and I talked
- 1:27:37about it some yesterday and we because I talked to Curtis about
- 1:27:41this, then him and I talked about it a little bit yesterday.
- 1:27:43It it kind of comes to a fear for us.
- 1:27:46It comes to a feel of the game, like you just said, you had
- 1:27:49moments where you were getting gashed.
- 1:27:51Where is the momentum sitting? You got to think like that.
- 1:27:55Like you go out and you, you've got 30 seconds and you got 3
- 1:28:00timeouts, OK, And you mind it, it's plenty of time to get what
- 1:28:04you need to. OK, You, you run the ball, you
- 1:28:07gain 4-5 and the clock's running.
- 1:28:11You call that timeout, OK, you stopped the clock.
- 1:28:14You're down to, you know, 24 seconds now.
- 1:28:18Well, you're second and six. It's one of those kind of in
- 1:28:24between. Do you run the ball again using
- 1:28:25all the time out? Maybe you get another six or
- 1:28:28seven. Maybe you break a bigger run.
- 1:28:30Maybe they stop you for a loss. You throw something short,
- 1:28:35intermediate, somewhere around there.
- 1:28:36You get to pick up the first down clock stops.
- 1:28:39You get up, you get on it, you throw an incomplete pass, you
- 1:28:43lost. You got 3 seconds off the clock,
- 1:28:45the clock stops. Now you're 3rd and 6th.
- 1:28:50Now in just about everybody's mind, you have to throw it.
- 1:28:55So then you throw another incomplete.
- 1:28:57The pass gets broken up by a good play, so now it's 4th down
- 1:29:02with 21 seconds left. What do you do?
- 1:29:07So I mean, it's kind of a feel for that, you know, hit if they
- 1:29:10got in that situation. What do you do with that 4th and
- 1:29:156th? You punt it and give them a
- 1:29:17chance with those 20 seconds. There's a good chance you're
- 1:29:19going to kick it into the end zone.
- 1:29:24You know there's a chance for that.
- 1:29:25Damn, who was it years ago? Deshawn Jackson and same kind of
- 1:29:33situation come up with the Eagles and the Giants years ago.
- 1:29:36They punted 1 to Deshawn Jackson late like that and he took it
- 1:29:41all the way back to the house just because they didn't have
- 1:29:43any other option. They were trying to get in field
- 1:29:45goal range to to try to win the game.
- 1:29:48It was tied. They kicked it.
- 1:29:50Matt Dodge. The reason I know that he was
- 1:29:53from East Carolina University where I was there because people
- 1:29:56gave him hell when that happened.
- 1:29:58He kicked it to Deshawn Jackson. Deshawn Jackson took it back for
- 1:30:01the touchdown. They lost the game on on what
- 1:30:05everybody thought was a was a no brainer.
- 1:30:07Yeah, you keep going. You take all three timeouts.
- 1:30:10You do this, but hell, then you sit there, you got 2 timeouts
- 1:30:13left, There's 21 seconds left. You threw 2 incomplete passes.
- 1:30:18Now you got to use the timeouts on defense.
- 1:30:19If you get that opportunity, it's another one of those
- 1:30:23situations. But let me ask this.
- 1:30:26Rob, he made a call and it was the worst call he possibly could
- 1:30:29have made because it didn't work out in his favor had he had they
- 1:30:34went into overtime, went right down the field and scored and
- 1:30:36then intercepted the first play on defense and never going to
- 1:30:40question of the call he made there at the end with the 29
- 1:30:44seconds left. Hey, Robbie, let me ask you this
- 1:30:46though, because I think, you know, I think one of the things
- 1:30:51that was kind of been levied at this staff is that they
- 1:30:55sometimes are a little too too conservative.
- 1:31:01And when I when I look at something like this, and I'm not
- 1:31:05even going to say conservative, but I say I'll, I'll say more.
- 1:31:09It feels like they're playing a lot not to lose the game instead
- 1:31:12of trying to go out there and win the game in the scenario
- 1:31:16you're saying there, you say, you know, you know, if if it
- 1:31:18works out, it's great. If it doesn't, it doesn't.
- 1:31:21I think from a fan perspective, you can live with going out in a
- 1:31:27blaze of glory a little bit more than you can sitting on it, and
- 1:31:32then take taking your nuts into the overtime knowing that your
- 1:31:36defense is gassed. And gassed.
- 1:31:37But hold on. Let me ask this, Robbie, and it
- 1:31:39goes back to what you said with what woes did to you a couple
- 1:31:43times there. First of all, Tech had the 3124
- 1:31:47lead five and a half 5:15 left. They gassed them a couple times.
- 1:31:52If you look at that drive, they gassed them quick.
- 1:31:57Should Brent Pry had stood up and went over and I'm calling
- 1:32:00the time out. Everybody get over here and what
- 1:32:02you just said listen, they have to get it in the end zone.
- 1:32:06They cannot kick a field goal. They are going to go for it on
- 1:32:094th down. But he continued to let it play
- 1:32:12out. And I know you tell us that just
- 1:32:13a while ago we gonna figure it out on the field, but it isn't
- 1:32:17the head coach. It's like especially and again
- 1:32:20this goes back to where he was thinking we're going to win this
- 1:32:23game on defense. I'm going to save my time.
- 1:32:26I don't need my time outs not thinking, well, what if they
- 1:32:30score? And I know you can't have that
- 1:32:31mentality and all that, I think, but you.
- 1:32:34If you're saving your time outs when you're on defense, you got
- 1:32:37to fucking use them on offense. It's true.
- 1:32:39You can't take three time outs into overtime.
- 1:32:41No, you can't, but the the the way I would have seen that one,
- 1:32:44bro, you bro, you talk about running the ball, you need
- 1:32:48effectively 40 yards. Yeah, you need 40 yards, 29
- 1:32:52seconds if you are, if you are worried about what's going to
- 1:32:56happen Slee, I'm trying. I'm pulling up the stats from
- 1:32:59that game and I can't remember, sorry.
- 1:33:01It's just what happens to me as you get old folks.
- 1:33:05Slee that game had not thrown a pick, was 16 to 24, was
- 1:33:10averaging 9 yards pass. I sit here and say with 29
- 1:33:15seconds, the 1st place should be your big go for the big play
- 1:33:20because if your thought is, well, let's play for overtime,
- 1:33:22your first play, if you go big play, if you don't hit it, you
- 1:33:25probably waste, what, 6-7 seconds or 22 seconds left?
- 1:33:28Mike, put it up here. They did have some time outs
- 1:33:30left. But if you weigh 6 of you down
- 1:33:32to 22, all right, we did hit it. We're going to run the ball or
- 1:33:35kneel the ball 3 * 2 times. Excuse me.
- 1:33:38And if they call time out, time out.
- 1:33:40Well, if you run the ball twice, it's four to five seconds, 4 to
- 1:33:435 seconds. They got 12 seconds.
- 1:33:44The Meadow miracle in the Meadowlands can happen.
- 1:33:47It's carrier don't it probably would have happened when I but
- 1:33:51you sit here and it's like it was basically it wasn't he.
- 1:33:57He didn't help his defense out any by not calling the time out,
- 1:34:00then getting gashed and then to Brian's point where you sat on
- 1:34:03him and you didn't do any damn thing with them.
- 1:34:06There's no consistency with that.
- 1:34:07And I think that is as a fan, it's frustrating because you sit
- 1:34:10here. It's like, oh, because when he
- 1:34:12didn't call the time out, I was walking the wooden iron when
- 1:34:15that drive happened. Oh, we didn't call the time out.
- 1:34:17Sorry. We got 3 timeouts.
- 1:34:19We got 30 seconds in in in the world today.
- 1:34:22That's like having a minute and a half because you got 3
- 1:34:25timeouts and as soon as that ball is called and you go down,
- 1:34:28not count if you go out of bounds.
- 1:34:30Yeah, not count. If you go out of bounds, the
- 1:34:31clock still stops on a. First down, it was like he, he
- 1:34:36thought it one way and then didn't do it where if he had
- 1:34:41just called the timeouts while they were driving trying to get
- 1:34:44his defense sorted. Well, first of all, if you call
- 1:34:463 timeouts and you just do the math, you're sitting probably
- 1:34:50over here with about a minute and a half minute, 45 seconds
- 1:34:53left. Yeah, right.
- 1:34:54And then you can say playbooks, while I don't go attack, we have
- 1:34:57no timeouts, but we need some first downs, all stops.
- 1:35:01I can, I can tell you from a defensive standpoint of a little
- 1:35:05bit better of what his thought process was and not taking the
- 1:35:08time out where they were getting gashed.
- 1:35:10It's because they were moving with tempo, they were moving
- 1:35:13quicker and most teams limit what they're going to do in that
- 1:35:17tempo and you have a pretty good idea going in and what they're
- 1:35:20going to do and you're trying to take advantage of it.
- 1:35:22If they call a time out, it gives them an opportunity to go
- 1:35:25to the sideline and set up two to three plays that go, OK, when
- 1:35:29they come out and line up this way, we're going to run this
- 1:35:33because it's going to take advantage of a certain thing.
- 1:35:35We're going to run this. If they line up this way, it
- 1:35:37takes advantage of a certain thing and it gives them
- 1:35:41statistically, it gives them more of an opportunity to
- 1:35:44produce a big play and gash you even more, rather than keeping
- 1:35:49them at that tempo and trying to take away the one to two things
- 1:35:53you know that they're going to do.
- 1:35:55The the idea being they're seeing success in this, that's
- 1:35:58why they're going tempo. But we feel from a personnel
- 1:36:01standpoint, we at least have the right personnel on the field
- 1:36:05right now. If we can just nut up a little
- 1:36:08bit, get get some stops, it limits the the the different
- 1:36:12variety of ways that they can attack the defense.
- 1:36:15They can't. They can't necessarily take any
- 1:36:17more advantage of the personnel we have on the field right now
- 1:36:20than the other. Yard and it's a, it's a man,
- 1:36:23it's a, it's a person. Very.
- 1:36:24It's a Jimmy's and Joe's type of thing.
- 1:36:27Yeah. In in my mind, yeah.
- 1:36:29I get that. All right, so, so we're going,
- 1:36:32we're going to wrap this up because we still got big
- 1:36:34screeners do and we're going to go 2 hours tonight, but that's
- 1:36:36not a shock with us 3 Robbie real quick.
- 1:36:40Hours and hours. I got to go to work tomorrow.
- 1:36:43I do too, but we discussed it last week and I want your
- 1:36:47opinion because we were talking about obviously this staff, the
- 1:36:51the staff as it's comprised right now it's 500I.
- 1:36:55I think we all will say, as fans of Virginia Tech, 500 is not
- 1:36:59acceptable. How many?
- 1:37:03And if you want to name names, you can.
- 1:37:04If you just want to write positions, you can show it.
- 1:37:08But how many staff changes do you think has to be made in this
- 1:37:12offseason? Because now it's three full
- 1:37:15years. First year we can say you had no
- 1:37:18talent. The last two years you've had
- 1:37:19some talented guys. And right now, if they go, if
- 1:37:24they go perfect, if they go perfect from here out, the
- 1:37:29combined record will be thirteen.
- 1:37:31And I can't do math, 15 and 11, which again, 15 and 11 is 7 1/2
- 1:37:41and 5 1/2 again, that that's not looking the greatest.
- 1:37:44So you tell me what is your opinion on this?
- 1:37:48If, if they can, if they win these last two games and win.
- 1:37:52The bowl game. Bowl game then it's going to be
- 1:37:59very unpopular. My thought behind it I could I
- 1:38:03could feasibly see and no real changes being made and making an
- 1:38:11emphasis in certain things finding somebody with more of
- 1:38:18that situational experience those things to to kind of
- 1:38:23bolster a very inexperienced staff when it comes to a lot of
- 1:38:27those things. All right, how many years you
- 1:38:32take away coach prize years of head coaching experience here at
- 1:38:36Virginia Tech. How many years of head coaching
- 1:38:38experience on that staff? That's Sean Quinn with two.
- 1:38:41There is a total combined five years of head coaching
- 1:38:44experience. There is a total combined of
- 1:38:48offensive and. And after Quinn's two at
- 1:38:51Savannah State, what is Savannah State?
- 1:38:53Savannah State. After his two years at Savannah
- 1:38:56State, the next closest one is JC Price.
- 1:39:01With what, three games? Two games?
- 1:39:04Whatever he was in three. Three.
- 1:39:06Yeah, that's right. Three.
- 1:39:09OK, so so you win. Best case scenario you what if
- 1:39:12it's six and seven? They win one of the final 2,
- 1:39:15they get bowl eligible, losing bowl game.
- 1:39:17Then you've got to start looking at, I mean, the essentials of
- 1:39:22football, why you not scoring points and why are you giving up
- 1:39:25points? And those are going to fall to
- 1:39:29the heads of those two sides of the ball.
- 1:39:32And they, you know, it's changing, changing scheme or, or
- 1:39:39figuring out what's going on or it's changing in personnel.
- 1:39:43The thing you got to worry about right now is, yeah, we've we've
- 1:39:48talked about the great recruiting classes and stuff
- 1:39:51they tried to put together. Where are those?
- 1:39:54Where are those things going to go?
- 1:39:55If these guys are, there's great recruits at the school right now
- 1:40:00that you really haven't seen anything from them.
- 1:40:02How many of those guys are going, We're not performing and
- 1:40:06I'm not playing. At what point are they going to
- 1:40:10start looking other places? What point are these recruits
- 1:40:14going to start changing their mind?
- 1:40:16I mean, so you got to think about that and it's.
- 1:40:23I look at my top thing right now is if things don't pan out at
- 1:40:28the end of this game, I mean at the end of this season, what has
- 1:40:34been the thing that is hurt the most?
- 1:40:37And that's given up a lot of points at the end of games,
- 1:40:42allowing those gashing plays and allowing those points at the
- 1:40:45end. That's when you've got to be
- 1:40:47able to put that foot down and shut things down when you have a
- 1:40:51lead. And I don't think they've been
- 1:40:54very effective at that. And I think probably the first
- 1:40:57one to go would be more of in that in that situation that
- 1:41:02that's just my thought on it. But you got to start scoring
- 1:41:06some points or else, or else Bowen's got to have some
- 1:41:11question in it too. Yep, I, I, I definitely think, I
- 1:41:16mean, looking at, you know, we talked about this last week
- 1:41:19after Syracuse, we kind of did an evaluation and I think I was
- 1:41:23kind of on the on the border with, with Bowen.
- 1:41:29I think I'm, I feel a lot less confident in him after what I
- 1:41:36saw against Clemson because I think on the whole I've seen
- 1:41:41progress from him this year and I felt like everything I saw at
- 1:41:47Clemson was a step back. Well, I saw progress from Games
- 1:41:525 to Clemson. The first four games I saw
- 1:41:54regression. I saw regression.
- 1:41:59I was, I was understanding in that there was there was maybe a
- 1:42:03process in that that got us there.
- 1:42:06But I think we're still we're still doing some of the same
- 1:42:09things that are problematic. And again when when you don't
- 1:42:15give. Your running backs or this one
- 1:42:17up? You don't give your running back
- 1:42:19to the football, that's a problem.
- 1:42:22Strength and condition I would say, I would say conditioning
- 1:42:25even more so. And and I'm thinking in season
- 1:42:28conditioning. I'm not talking about what's
- 1:42:31going on in your phase one and two.
- 1:42:34I'm talking about phase three and four.
- 1:42:37How how are you conditioning them just before the start of
- 1:42:40the season and then camp and how are you conditioning them in the
- 1:42:44season? Yeah, with, with the injuries
- 1:42:46and stuff that they've dealt with you, you've got to start
- 1:42:48looking at some of those things. But like I said earlier, we're
- 1:42:52talking with with techie about this thing.
- 1:42:55You know, you can look at all this situational stuff and, and
- 1:42:59people can complain and, and have their opinions about all
- 1:43:02those situations. The head coach has to make
- 1:43:06decisions based on what he thinks is going to be best for
- 1:43:09that team. No fans ever been fired because
- 1:43:12it's true. You can make the right decision.
- 1:43:14The damn head coach is when it comes down, when it comes down
- 1:43:19to this staff, OK, you can go position by position and think,
- 1:43:24OK, well, this person in this position needs to be replaced.
- 1:43:28You know, Cheetah needs to be replaced as ADB coach or, or
- 1:43:32crook needs to be replaced as an online coach or whatever.
- 1:43:36They're going to go to the coordinators because if the
- 1:43:38coordinators replaced, they might want to change all of
- 1:43:41those position coaches. And I mean, I think that's where
- 1:43:47it's going to fall. It's going to fall in that
- 1:43:48three. That's going to fall in the head
- 1:43:50coach and the two coordinators. And I don't think three years
- 1:43:55in, given Virginia Tech's track record and, and like watching
- 1:44:01coaches develop and, and things like that, Rod's not going
- 1:44:05anywhere. No, I know, I know Tally doesn't
- 1:44:09agree with me. Tally didn't like to hear it.
- 1:44:10He said something about it last week.
- 1:44:14Frank Beamer didn't have a whole lot better record 3 or 4 or five
- 1:44:16years into his his run at Virginia Tech either.
- 1:44:20And you got to give them time to develop and to bring things in.
- 1:44:23And everybody talks about it's different game now with NIL and
- 1:44:28all of this and all that. You have to throw that out the
- 1:44:30window because not every team out there is going to be able to
- 1:44:33bring, you know, the $5,000,000 quarterbacks and the, you know,
- 1:44:38elite receivers and all that stuff through NIL and, and.
- 1:44:43Transport. Wars and all of that.
- 1:44:45Can I say this? Look at how much money Florida
- 1:44:48State spent. They are one in nine through the
- 1:44:50point. You still have to know how to
- 1:44:52coach football. You have to still how to know,
- 1:44:54build, build culture. You have to build cohesion.
- 1:44:56People have to play together. It is a game of 11 people moving
- 1:45:00at once. I know they, I know we hate the
- 1:45:02guy collectively, but but look at what's going on at Pitt right
- 1:45:05now. Yeah.
- 1:45:06And they have, they have not even in the ballpark nil what
- 1:45:10we're working with. Nope.
- 1:45:12None. Not even.
- 1:45:13Close. Much worse facilities, much less
- 1:45:15fan support and they're they're out there getting it done so.
- 1:45:21That he can build that community base, he can build the fan base,
- 1:45:26he can build the recruit base. It's just a matter of the the
- 1:45:31product catching up with what. He's get, can we say?
- 1:45:35Experience on the field in the decision making roles is so
- 1:45:41behind where it where it could be, yeah, when everything else
- 1:45:45is probably a step above where you might want it.
- 1:45:49I think Marv and I think Bowen are very smart in terms of
- 1:45:53scheme, in terms of drawing up plays, in terms of things like
- 1:45:57that. I don't think that they're very
- 1:46:00as good as we want them to be in those game day situational
- 1:46:05calls. And we know you're you're
- 1:46:08pairing that with pride that has very limited experience calling
- 1:46:13everything on game day. It's a bad situation where he
- 1:46:17can't really lean on the two guys that are most in tune at
- 1:46:21that game to say, hey, what should we do here?
- 1:46:23Hey, what, what, what do you think we should do here?
- 1:46:26They can't make that call because they haven't been in
- 1:46:28this position any longer than he has.
- 1:46:30Neither one of those coordinators have tremendous
- 1:46:33amount of experience. None.
- 1:46:36You know, running programs like that?
- 1:46:38Nope. Neither.
- 1:46:39But here's the thing, Bowen. Bowen called one bowl game
- 1:46:41before he, you know, went down to Jacksonville.
- 1:46:44He was. Called the Co OC.
- 1:46:45He was pretty much, you know, running practices, not calling
- 1:46:48plays on. Or hadn't been any higher than
- 1:46:50the Co DC at at any point otherwise, right?
- 1:46:52And it's probably similar running practices and not on
- 1:46:55game day. But this is what I'll say and
- 1:46:57This is why I'm fine. If Pride chooses to make
- 1:47:02decisions, he's got to make moves because you cannot be an
- 1:47:04average team. Here we go.
- 1:47:07The amount of Joe's he's brought in, your APR, your Gilliam's.
- 1:47:13Jay Lane Tootin knows people feel like he's regressed this
- 1:47:17year. But where Karen Drone is as a
- 1:47:18quarterback, look at the Joe's he sold this program to.
- 1:47:23Yeah. And I saw somebody put in about
- 1:47:26for when they being a better game manager, but guess what?
- 1:47:29When he got when the Joes went down, he went down.
- 1:47:32Yeah, cuz you've got to have players that can play.
- 1:47:35You have to or you. We're not kind of seeing the
- 1:47:38opposite right now, right you are.
- 1:47:40We're seeing the Joes are kind of carrying us when we don't
- 1:47:46have the experience in those situational places.
- 1:47:49We're not making the right calls always on, on game day.
- 1:47:54The Joes are kind of keeping us, you know, floating up here.
- 1:47:58We kind of had the opposite towards the end of the Fuente
- 1:47:59area where you know the, I think from a preparation standpoint,
- 1:48:05Fuente did a very good job. I still think that Cornelson was
- 1:48:08awful in situational calls, but I think they did a very good job
- 1:48:13in the week to week preparation for an opponent.
- 1:48:17They knew schematics and then you had to manage your game.
- 1:48:20Yeah. And, and, and that's where they
- 1:48:23had a little bit of a leg up, but where they, you know, they,
- 1:48:25they didn't necessarily have the ability to bring in a culture
- 1:48:30and the ability to deploy, recruit and recruit and deploy
- 1:48:34weapons week to week. So.
- 1:48:36They did not know how to recruit.
- 1:48:38Maybe we just. I don't, I don't know if that
- 1:48:39changes the ceiling necessarily of this team.
- 1:48:42I think, I think it definitely raises the potential ceiling
- 1:48:45because if, oh God, if you figure out some of those things,
- 1:48:50it's a lot easier for I think coaches to get better than it is
- 1:48:54for average players to completely level up their game.
- 1:48:59And because if you, because you have to, you still have to be a
- 1:49:01good coach to develop those players into those things.
- 1:49:05So if you've already got the talent and you are doing pretty
- 1:49:09good job of developing that talent, if you can figure out
- 1:49:12those those situational things, even if you just improve
- 1:49:15marginally, you put yourself in a better position long term
- 1:49:20because you already have talent on the field.
- 1:49:23Martin and I think, I think. It's it's just.
- 1:49:27Yeah, Yeah. There you go.
- 1:49:27You already said what marginal. Probably is 20 gives us four
- 1:49:31more wins this. Year 4 more wins probably.
- 1:49:33Yeah, it's not a lie. Yeah.
- 1:49:35It's marginally get marginally better is I'll be nice three to
- 1:49:38four more wins, three to four more wins.
- 1:49:41All righty, Brian, you good? We're.
- 1:49:42Gonna close chapter, I'm good. Big Aflac policy and bring Saban
- 1:49:47in there on the defense. Where's that Amazon money?
- 1:49:53Can we get that Amazon? Money when we get the Amazon
- 1:49:55money. All righty.
- 1:49:56Well, Brian, let's flip it. We got some picks to make.
- 1:49:59Brian, you did not e-mail me who did what last week.
- 1:50:04Hang on after day. After day.
- 1:50:08Shelter dominated. That's all you need to know.
- 1:50:11Yeah, I heard that. I heard that Jason did taxi.
- 1:50:14Thanks. Shelton went unbeaten last week
- 1:50:17and if he wants, can he make all of his switches to Shelton's fix
- 1:50:20this week? I would say anything I pick no
- 1:50:23opposite instead of better chance.
- 1:50:25We'll see. You won't going to be on the
- 1:50:27screen, but we're writing yours down.
- 1:50:29Let's go ahead and jump into it. I'll get it to you though all.
- 1:50:31Righty. Well, Brian, you leading the
- 1:50:33way, man, Your game. Yeah, man, it is the it's the
- 1:50:41Cox Man 11. And a half. 11 1/2.
- 1:50:48That was wild to me when I looked at it.
- 1:50:51And that should be minus by the way.
- 1:50:54Well, no, no, no, no, no. They're they're laying 11 and a
- 1:50:58Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, you're right.
- 1:50:59That should be minus. That's they are -11 1/2.
- 1:51:02So is that why I was favored by 11 1/2?
- 1:51:04Cox, Cox are the favorite here. All right, so, and, and based on
- 1:51:10that, I mean, I, I, I'd that that's a that's a big fucking
- 1:51:13line. So I went with Mizzou here
- 1:51:16because while I think the cops will probably win this game,
- 1:51:19that that 11 1/2 is just crazy to me.
- 1:51:23It is crazy. I think it might be a, you know,
- 1:51:257 to 10 point victory there for the for the Gamecocks, but I'll
- 1:51:29take Mizzou here. Rob, we will let you go at the
- 1:51:32end until we put everything up here.
- 1:51:34Me, I'm with you. First of all, South Carolina has
- 1:51:37played their best two games by far of the year against Texas
- 1:51:41A&M at home. Where they rushed the field,
- 1:51:44Shout out my cousin Hodges who rushed the field down there, got
- 1:51:50some pictures of it. He and he stole.
- 1:51:53I I don't want to say he took something off the field.
- 1:51:56That's all I'm going. To say.
- 1:51:58I know that he took some of the heads as he was playing in his
- 1:52:01dad's yard. He said no, but I'm going to zoo
- 1:52:03as well. Shelton is going.
- 1:52:07Shelton's land a big number with the game cops.
- 1:52:11Tally rides with me and you our wonderful ride.
- 1:52:13Miranda also laying points. Jason riding with me.
- 1:52:17You and Tally. Robbie.
- 1:52:20Yeah. South Carolina, Missouri.
- 1:52:22I think South Carolina's going to win, but I don't know if it's
- 1:52:24going to be by 11 1/2 or more. I got to go Missouri.
- 1:52:27I'm not. Robbie goes Mizzou, I am going
- 1:52:33to Madison, WI where effectively the best looking team I did get.
- 1:52:40This one right this this is a. You did get this one right.
- 1:52:44This is this is our big number week.
- 1:52:47Y'all about to figure out we got some big ass numbers to be
- 1:52:50laying on this week with these games, but I'm going to Madison,
- 1:52:54Oregon, WI, Oregon by far. If you have watched them play,
- 1:52:57they look like the most complete team.
- 1:53:00They look like the best team. That's why they are the number
- 1:53:02one team in the country. But they are going to be
- 1:53:05travelling to Madison, WI, Camp Randall, one of the toughest
- 1:53:09places to play in the country. I need to see one thing, Brian,
- 1:53:13real quick before I finish up my little comment here.
- 1:53:18This is going to be a night game in Madison.
- 1:53:21So that place is going to probably be Office Rockers,
- 1:53:24which is much beers they drink up there.
- 1:53:27So for me, I think 14 1/2 is a too big a number to lay.
- 1:53:33I think Oregon's wins it. I think they're going to get a
- 1:53:35war. I think Luke Fickle effectively
- 1:53:38brings the house knowing that this is his biggest game of the
- 1:53:41year. I'm taking Wisconsin.
- 1:53:44Give me the points, Brian. Yep, riding with you as well
- 1:53:47here, Wisconsin it it's it's again, it's it's Camp Randall.
- 1:53:51I think it's going to be a very, very solid atmosphere for this
- 1:53:57game. I think they're going to come to
- 1:53:59play. I I don't think they're going to
- 1:54:01win. I don't think they're really
- 1:54:02even going to win necessarily by, you know, a a a a single
- 1:54:08digit here. I think it could be double
- 1:54:09digits, but I think that hook, that hook baby, I don't like.
- 1:54:14I don't like the hook so. 4228. Exactly.
- 1:54:19I mean, you know all. Right.
- 1:54:23I think 14 1/2 is just a little too much for me.
- 1:54:25What about these two guys, Shelton, Tally, Say the Ducks.
- 1:54:29Miranda rides with us. Jason, they're laying a lot of
- 1:54:34points. Robbie, what about you?
- 1:54:38I don't think Wisconsin is there yet.
- 1:54:44Oregon is. Oregon's it right now and I'll
- 1:54:47take Oregon I Oregon by 100. Oregon by 100I.
- 1:54:52Don't think, I don't think Wisconsin's ready for it.
- 1:54:54And the ducks are coming in and they're going.
- 1:54:59They're every farm I've ever been to.
- 1:55:01There's a pond and they're going to take over that pond and it's
- 1:55:04all over for them. All right, I have a 14 and a.
- 1:55:08Half. All righty, here we go.
- 1:55:10I like the 4821 thought 482828. Something like that.
- 1:55:15All right, lots of points. All right, Shelton is going to
- 1:55:18the little apple where K State's still alive for the Big 12
- 1:55:24championship. Arizona State.
- 1:55:26A surprising bounce back here for Arizona State.
- 1:55:28They were kind of absolute trash with Kenny Dillingham's baby
- 1:55:32ass. What was he 33 last year when he
- 1:55:35got hired, 33 when he got hired last year.
- 1:55:39But right now that hire is looking better and better as
- 1:55:42time goes on. There are 7 and 2, so they are
- 1:55:46effectively still in the Big 12 race as well.
- 1:55:49They need some things to happen. Brian, who you going with?
- 1:55:54You know, this is interesting. You know, Curtis talked about
- 1:55:56the the big spreads in this big screeners.
- 1:55:59This is the smallest spread of any game we're picking tonight.
- 1:56:039. And it's damn near double
- 1:56:06digits. And this may be the one I'm
- 1:56:09really sure about. You know what?
- 1:56:10And I think K State has a little bit more to play for and for
- 1:56:14that and, and being at home, I think they're going to go out
- 1:56:17there and they're going to take care of business.
- 1:56:20Yep, and I am kind of right with you.
- 1:56:23They both actually have playful both the four and two in
- 1:56:25conference. It's a night game in the little
- 1:56:28apple. It's got to be K State.
- 1:56:31I think Arizona State kind of dream season comes to an end.
- 1:56:39Yeah, Shelton is going this is his game K State.
- 1:56:46I just ran his game K State. Yeah, somebody did it.
- 1:56:51Somebody had to. Miranda taking 9.
- 1:56:54Jason with the purple. Robbie with the.
- 1:56:58All the long long blonde flowing locks are going to be running
- 1:57:03all up and down that field. Give me K state.
- 1:57:08K State. All righty.
- 1:57:12I was going to, I was going to have to go in Arizona State if
- 1:57:15everybody else would pick K State.
- 1:57:17I just just to be got you off the hook got you off the hook.
- 1:57:21All righty next game UVA off a big win against Pitt goes up to
- 1:57:28Notre Dame. This is going to be a 330 kick.
- 1:57:32The line is Notre Dame laying 23 Notre Dame effectively if they
- 1:57:39went out, they are in the playoff right now.
- 1:57:42I did see a matchup y'all one of the prognosticators put and I
- 1:57:47know I didn't get a chance to watch the the the playoff
- 1:57:50tonight. So if y'all saw what happened,
- 1:57:52let me know. It was something like it was who
- 1:57:57was it? It was Alabama, Notre Dame and
- 1:57:59Notre Dame. I'm going to tell you, South
- 1:58:03Bend in the middle of December is not a warm place to play at
- 1:58:07all. Last.
- 1:58:09Time I was in South Bend was in July and it wasn't extremely a
- 1:58:12warm place. But Notre Dame laying 23, this
- 1:58:17is off the onset of Army is their next game.
- 1:58:22So Brian, what do you think? I like Notre Dame very much in
- 1:58:28this game, but I don't know if I like them. 23 points worth.
- 1:58:31So I'm going to take UVA here. It's still fuck UVA, but you
- 1:58:34know, yeah. Not three points worth.
- 1:58:38Yep, I'm with you on that. I also thinking of the army
- 1:58:41game. I have a very sneaky, sneaky
- 1:58:45feeling Marcus Freeman is getting them prepared for that
- 1:58:48triple option. So a lot of very very
- 1:58:52responsibility drills this week. Might as well do it for two
- 1:58:56weeks with a team you clearly are out talented.
- 1:58:58A team that couldn't put 14 points up on North Carolina's
- 1:59:01defense. Y'all figure that out But give
- 1:59:04me UVA as well. But still, fuck UVA Shelton.
- 1:59:12Shelton is riding with us here. UVA.
- 1:59:16Tally also riding with us with UVA Miranda is taking Notre
- 1:59:24Dame. Notre Dame.
- 1:59:26By 100, says her and Jason with. Miranda, Robin, and you off the
- 1:59:33hook. You don't have to.
- 1:59:34You have to. Take Notre Dame now.
- 1:59:36It wouldn't have mattered. UVA.
- 1:59:39They're cross. Sabres.
- 1:59:41I got a cross for you. Notre Dame laying 20.
- 1:59:46I don't care. Robbie, Robbie said.
- 1:59:51All right, fuck, fuck Virginia all the way.
- 1:59:53Let's do it. Virginia versus Hitler.
- 1:59:56Hitler. No, no, maybe not.
- 2:00:01But. Just to everybody, if you
- 2:00:05haven't ever tuned in before. I feel just.
- 2:00:07More coming on stay in the program.
- 2:00:09I feel like I summoned my inner counts there.
- 2:00:14There you go. You did.
- 2:00:15That's a little bit of an inner counts right there.
- 2:00:17Yeah. All right, next game we are
- 2:00:19going to is going to be Utah, Colorado, Utah, coming off a
- 2:00:25heartbreaking loss to BYU, Colorado comeback win down in
- 2:00:30Lubbock, Colorado laying 10 points.
- 2:00:34Ryan, let's say. You, I mean, Utah has been kind
- 2:00:39of up and down this year. Colorado is really look better
- 2:00:44than I expected, even though I think that Texas Tech game was a
- 2:00:48little bit of a comeback to Earth moment.
- 2:00:52I'm I'm going to go, I'm going to go Buffalo's here.
- 2:00:57I am against you on this. I think because of the clash of
- 2:01:01styles, I think Colorado still wins this game.
- 2:01:04I think it's probably by a touchdown, not much more than
- 2:01:07that. But give me Utah in this
- 2:01:11situation. And Shelton, I'm with you,
- 2:01:18Miranda's with me, Jason's with you, Robbie's with.
- 2:01:23How many years do you sit and watch Utah at some point ruin
- 2:01:29somebody's damn day by beating them USC?
- 2:01:35More people on occasion. They've done it year in, year
- 2:01:38out. Colorado's sitting there
- 2:01:41thinking that they're they're riding the High Road and, and in
- 2:01:44the driver's seat for that, for that conference championship.
- 2:01:49Utah's going to beat them all right?
- 2:01:51Robbie's saying take the 10, put the money line on Utah, by the
- 2:01:57way, the one that really I think if you're Colorado, you're
- 2:02:01pissed about, you don't know what time this kick is on the on
- 2:02:06set on Saturday. I'm.
- 2:02:08Like 1030 airtime. 10:00 Ten o'clock. 10:00 No, no, no. 10:00
- 2:02:13their time. Noon, our time, early kick.
- 2:02:16Robbie, you might be on to something there.
- 2:02:18All righty, let's keep rolling. We finally have gotten to the
- 2:02:22end and our Music Man, where he is taking a look at the biggest
- 2:02:27game of the weekend, potentially an elimination game.
- 2:02:31Tennessee, Georgia. The Hills.
- 2:02:45Were lined with wildflowers and I was wild Wilder than they for
- 2:02:55these that run. They just died in the sun and
- 2:03:00our field was just wither and flame.
- 2:03:06So all that rose feeding and freeing on the road now.
- 2:03:11So I read here now where I go when flower goes wild.
- 2:03:19Now we get home, whisper while flowers OK will grow.
- 2:03:32Hey folks, welcome back to another week of guitar licks and
- 2:03:34gambling picks. I'm Jason Long.
- 2:03:36I'm playing one of my all time favorite Dolly Parton songs,
- 2:03:39which must mean one thing. I'm looking at another Tennessee
- 2:03:42game this week. Now the Volunteers are going to
- 2:03:45travel to Athens to take on Georgia's Saturday.
- 2:03:49This will probably be a College Football Playoff elimination
- 2:03:52game. And before I get to my pick,
- 2:03:56Georgia fans, let me talk to you for a second.
- 2:03:59I realize I picked against your team now three times this
- 2:04:02season. I'm not trying to pick on you.
- 2:04:05Hey, I'm a Widespread Panic fan, man.
- 2:04:07I've been trying to play Tall Boy for about a month, but Vegas
- 2:04:09is doing you all no favors. Georgia is 2 and seven against
- 2:04:13the spread. And this week.
- 2:04:15But Tennessee is getting 10 1/2 points.
- 2:04:18That seems like too much, so I'm going with the Volunteers.
- 2:04:21Plus 10 1/2 against Georgia Saturday.
- 2:04:56Let's go Tennessee. See you next week.
- 2:05:02Already Tennessee. And you know what?
- 2:05:06I'm going to go ahead and just lead it off here because I'm
- 2:05:10right with Jason on this 110 and a damn half.
- 2:05:15This could have been 6 1/2 and I'd have been like, maybe that's
- 2:05:19a little too much. That's a little too much. 10 1/2
- 2:05:22is nuts. So give me the Volunteers.
- 2:05:26Yeah, I think we all looked at this one and you see 10 1/2, it
- 2:05:30started somewhere like 14 1/2 early, early, like on Saturday
- 2:05:35night. And it has come down to it
- 2:05:38actually has come down all the way to 10.
- 2:05:40Now. Watch some of the Ole Miss game.
- 2:05:45Georgia is a good team. They're not the juggernaut.
- 2:05:49Vegas keeps putting the mass and I think Tennessee is too well
- 2:05:52built on the defensive side of the ball to get blown out by
- 2:05:57more than 10 points. Tennessee, OH watch this.
- 2:06:03Sheldon's riding, Tally's riding, Randy's riding, and we
- 2:06:06know what Jason's doing. Yeah.
- 2:06:09What you going to do, Robbie? What you going to?

- 2:06:20I know that man. He was my roommate in college.
- 2:06:24I know him very well and looking at this thing a.
- 2:06:29Lot of tease. A Georgia favored by 10 1/2
- 2:06:35points against Tennessee. It's in Athens, right?
- 2:06:38It is in Athens, it is going to be a night game.
- 2:06:41Everybody else pick Tennessee. I like to be different.
- 2:06:48I'm going, I'm going. I'm going to take a little route
- 2:06:51that that Jason does. I'm going to match a song to it.
- 2:06:55OK? You guys know I have a dog.
- 2:06:59My dog's name is Reba. We're going to go with a Reba
- 2:07:02McEntire song. Oh, and it's going to be the
- 2:07:05night the lights went out in Georgia.
- 2:07:07There you go, there we go, Robbie says go dogs.
