- Amanda: What is up, guys? Welcome back to another episode of Let's Talk Football, Married Edition, your favorite place for all things fantasy football. Some NFL hot takes, obviously some questionable opinions that might just pan out for you in the long run. And just a few marital disagreements to keep things interesting. As most of you know, we're your hosts. I'm Amanda. This is Drew, and we are gearing up for A slightly different episode today. Most episodes we've done so far have been all of our rankings. So quarterback and tight end and running back and wide receiver rankings. Today we're gonna get into a little bit more of a s tactical episode around 10 things you need to know before draft day, baby. However, before we get into the nitty-gritty, we realize you guys know absolutely jack shit about me and Drew as human beings and Fun fact, this was incredibly hard for Drew to do, but we're gonna share Drew: Yep. Amanda: five fun facts about ourselves. So yes, I'm gonna make you kick us off, Drew. Tell me a few funnish facts about yourself. Drew: yeah. So a little bit about me. love golf. I play quite a bit of golf throughout the golf season here. obviously us being up here in Ohio, it's not year round like I would love it to be. so we get about six months a year where I can play. So I try to fit in. You know, I'd like to play twice a week if possible. it's probably what it averages out to be front loaded in the beginning of the year. another interesting fact is I I play hockey. at least when my body allows me to. I picked it up as an adult. I had a a friend who played and joined a team I don't know five, six years ago and I've been playing ever since. So play as off as often as I can. Unfortunately the last four months I've only played probably six games 'cause of a myriad of injuries. Getting old is fun. couple other things, I'm a big spreadsheet guy. so I kinda get made fun of by my wife all the time. Amanda: Ay mu Drew: obviously we run a couple businesses together and I am always in spreadsheets and even when we're having a party at the house, I'm in the spreadsheet on what what we need to get Amanda: Always a fucking spreadsheet. Drew: and yeah, it's just it's always a spreadsheet, so little little joke around the house about that. yeah, well you have to. Yeah, I've got packing lists for golf Amanda: We're talking like full blown packing lists before vacations and shit. Like he has it all. Yeah, you don't Drew: trips and vacation and interesting fact about my wife, speaking of vacation, is she doesn't remember to pack her toiletries. So if she goes if Amanda: It's not my fucking job, dude. Drew: she goes on if she goes on vacation or she Amanda: I'm just a girl. Drew: went on a trip with her sister not too long ago and forgot her toothbrush and her sister was like, How do you forget your toothbrush? And she said, I don't pack the toilet trees. It's not my job. It's Drew's job. So yeah, that's my Amanda: It's not my job. It's Drew's job. Drew: wife. anyway, I guess one one last thing is I I'm I'm also r neurotic about my lawn. we have two and a half acres here. It's a it's a nice piece of property, but I'm like have special equipment on the zero turn, make sure to get the lines just right. I cross cut to make sure that the lines you can see them coming from the house on both ways. I I'm big on that. I don't let anybody else cut my grass. I don't even let Amanda get on my mower because she's chaotic and would screw my lines up and it would just it I would hate it. Amanda: It'll get done, baby. Drew: and also love getting compliments that people that drive down the street, we've had many of them that I you know, I know or through passing or our H V A C guy lives down the street and he came over and looked at our furnace and said, Man, your lawn always looks so great. And so it makes me feel real good about myself. So just a few things about myself. how about you, Amanda? Amanda: Yeah, we are like the true yin and yang situation. that'll lead me to my first one. My nickname growing up was Tornado. It's what my dad called me when I was a kid. And I'm I'm th I'm almost 34 now. And to this day, when I go back home to see my parents, he refers to me as the Tornado being back home because I am just organized fucking chaos to my core. So it makes sense to compliment Drew's mild OCD to pair with somebody who quite literally is. Just chaotic. Like he even said, like it's organized. I know where everything fucking is. No. I know I I know it. there's somewhere. There's three places Drew: I don't know that I would call it organized chaos. It's just chaos. That's debatable. You never know where your glasses are. There's many things you don't know where they are. Amanda: they always are. And so it's there. I just gotta find them. It's fun. Life is more fun when you're a little messy. Drew: But oddly enough, you are very clean when it comes to like the dishes. Like you you knock them out every day. Yeah, Amanda: I am. Mm-hmm. I I keep the housework up, yes. Drew: which is odd because it's so different from your personality with everything else. But like the kitchen gets cleaned every day and you like never like you just have to do it. It's weird. You're not wrong. I just Amanda: Well, because if you do it every day then you don't have like a chaos mess on your yeah, right? Drew: hate dishes so much that, you know, I'd let it go days, but Amanda: Whatever. another fun fact, I am low-key obsessed with dinosaurs, essentially like a six-year-old boy. There are a lot of them around my office space. They're my personality. Jurassic Parks are my favorite movies. I've always been a big dinosaur girl. Raptor is my favorite dinosaur itself. It's been a thing for a really long time, and now it's just a goofy running joke that people buy me things with dinosaurs on them often, and I like it that way. a couple other things. I am currently training for my first marathon. So I run an obscene amount of miles every single week. Running has officially become my personality. But not only do I like to run really far distances now, I also love to lift weights. My hip thrust PR is well over 500 pounds. So anytime we walk into fantasy football season, I'm always like, I'm training to take care of myself, so maybe my team I'll manifest into my team that they'll be healthy this year as well. I'm a freak. It is what it is. last but not least, and controversial as all hell for so many of you, but like sorry, not sorry, it's Team Diet Pepsi greater than Diet Coke, and I will not be taking any further conversation on it. Diet Coke sucks and Diet Pepsi is the best, period. Okay, cool. Moving on, because I know people hate Diet Pepsi, but you're just wrong, and I don't know how else to tell you. all right, cool. Well, we will dive into our ten things to know about the draft. Now that you know a little bit about us, let's know a little bit about how to manage the draft successfully. So Drew, kick us off with the first thing you think people need to know about the draft. Drew: Yeah, our our number one thing is gonna be know your league, okay? Incredibly important. This is how you can win or lose a a fantasy season is by knowing or not knowing your league. And that that's in two different ways. The first way is you have to know your scoring settings. Are you standard? Are you half PPR? Are you PPR? For those of you who don't know, PPR is point per reception. half PPR is a half point per reception and standard leagues Which aren't really standard anymore. Most formats have half PPR as like the the preset. but standard leagues are no point points for receptions. That will make a big difference in your draft strategy on rankings of players. When we rank our players, we do it based on half PPR because it's just kind of right down the middle. but a four point passing touchdown versus a six point passing touchdown league, that's gonna be different. six point passing touchdown equalizes rushing touchdowns a little bit more. Four point passing touchdowns, those rushing quarterbacks are gonna be even more valuable. so you gotta know your league and you gotta know your settings. And then the second part of that is gonna be know your managers, right? Look, if you're in a brand new league, it's gonna be tough. But if if you're in a league with the same people year after year, you know the players that you're playing with, you know their tendencies. Do they take running backs early? You know, for me, for instance, my my main league, my home league, we're on year, I don't know, fourteen or something like that. And running backs go earlier. They just do. Every year, running backs come off the board. By the time you're in the fifth round, you're like, man, I really like, you know, I don't know, David Montgomery at the 605 this year. Well, he's gonna be gone probably before the fifth round hits because running backs just they go off a little bit earlier. So you have to know your league. And also matters for where you're drafting. If you're sitting at the eight spot in a draft and you've got the turn coming up and you know what the tendencies are of the managers that are drafting between your two picks, it's gonna help you make a more informed decision on what player to take now and who's gonna come back around based on knowing those players. Knowing their favorite teams, do those players draft their favorite players, right? I'm a Browns fan. I'm oddly different than most people where I don't like having Browns fans on my team. I'm in a league with a bunch of Bengals fans. I know that T Higgins is gonna go around higher than he normally Amanda: Mm-hmm. Drew: does because he's a Bengals, right? So know your league. It's incredibly important. So for number two, Miss Amanda, what do you got? Amanda: Number two is you wanna have a balanced meal. We've referred in a few of our ranking episodes to some players and we've called them vegetables. Meaning they are always you you wanna have them on your plate. They balance the meal out, but they're not the sexiest thing on the plate either. But they're really anchoring your overall fantasy football roster down. So you're going to have some players who are your more boomer bust, players who have a lot of high potential, but they might not be the most consistent performers. As opposed to that, you wanna make sure that you are choosing some players when you're in your rankings, right? Hey, I could choose between this guy and this guy. And I'm looking at the rest of my roster already, and I'm like, you what? Some of these players are a little bit more vital. They're a little bit sexier. And I wanna balance this out. And but instead of picking the sexier guy, I like both of them. I'm gonna pick the vegetable of the two, the more consistent guy. I think we called Josh Jacobs a veget a vegetable. He's not the sexiest running back in the league. David Montgomery's a vegetable, Drew: David Montgomery. He's a big one. Amanda: right? And he's a vegan, so it's funny. but they're just consistent dudes who are never going to like piss you off, right? And there's plenty of running backs and wide receivers that are going to piss you off this year. And you wanna have just a little bit of balance there. That way you always know that you have a tried and true to throw in if you're Somebody gets hurt. You're short on who to start that week. At least you got that vegetable there to be able to throw in and you feel like you have a well balanced plate when you're going about your draft. A little bit of everything on that plate makes you really happy after draft day into the season. Drew: right, so now for number three, we have don't double dip the onesie positions. Your onesie positions are the positions that you're only gonna start one guy each week. So your quarterback and your tight end. Those are your onesie positions. So don't double dip in two different ways. First one is if you're picking an elite early tight end or quarterback. Don't take the other position right away. So if you get Josh Allen in the second round, don't take a tight end early in the top five, six rounds. You're gonna fall behind with your running backs and your receivers, and you need more depth at those positions. So don't double up early in the draft by taking Trey McBride again in the third round if you already have Josh Allen. It might seem awesome that you've got two elite onesie positions, but I promise you by the end of the year, more often than not, it's not gonna work out. The stats back that up. The second one is don't draft two quarterbacks or two tight ends if you have an elite player. If you have Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow, Drake May, any of these top six, seven, eight quarterbacks, maybe even further down the line, don't take another quarterback. You don't need another quarterback. You'll get one on your bye week, or if an injury happens, an injury happens, but you're gonna waste a roster spot. And again, you need more depth at running back and wide receiver. to not only fill up your starting positions, but also your flex positions, right? Same goes for tight end. If you have a Trey McBride, a Brock Bowers, Tucker Kraft, Tyler Warren, any of these players, don't draft another tight end. It's just gonna be a wasted roster spot for you. Amanda: Yeah, you can always throw them on IR if something does happen. I that's about the biggest thing I've heard from so many people is like, Well, what if my quarterback gets hurt? What if my tight end goes down? You've got an IR spot. Throw on IR. If they're elite, you want them. You don't want to drop You're gonna put on IR, pick up another guy, stream it'll buff. It'll buff. Drew: Th there's always gonna be a people available on the waivers. You're Amanda: Yes. Drew: th not ever no one or not o no one, but most of your leagues, seventy five percent of your leagues should only have one tight end or one quarterback on their roster because the rest of them should be playing the same people every week. So there's always people available on the waivers to grab, not only for bye weeks, for injuries, every it'll be okay, I promise. Amanda: It will. It'll buff. Going into number four, again to that vein, is just do not, do not draft defenses or kickers until the last two rounds of the draft. It happens all the time. I have every single player filled out. I've got a couple running backs, a couple wide receivers. I'll just go ahead and take my defense now. You don't know. Round what is it? 13 14? That's when we're looking, or 14 15, that's when we're looking to take our defense and kicker. You do not want to take them earlier than that. It's just there's not enough value in them, right? There's some elite defenses, yes. So like maybe you can take at the end of like the last three rounds, you know, maybe you reach and take the Houston Texans defense because they're elite. But any earlier than that, if someone wants to do that, let them. Let them do that. Do not fall into that trap. You want other value at that point. You want to round out with some of these deeper, sleeper picks, guys who could bust out and potentially become valuable parts of the offense is not some nobody kicker who you're gonna swap out 85 times during the season anyways, because fuck it, it's not that big of a deal. And a lot of leagues now don't even have kickers because they're fairly irrelevant in leagues. Like, do not take the defense or the kicker until the last. And you can stream your defense all year. So, like you'll see a lot of teams like swap their defense in and out for favorable matchups. Like, unless you get an elite defense, you're gonna s you're gonna stream it in and out anyways. Don't waste the pick. There's valuable draft capital to be had. Do not waste it on your kickers or defense until the last two rounds of the draft. Moving on to number five. What do you got at number five for us? Drew: At number five, we have don't draft to trade. It seems like a good strategy. I've tried it before. It does not work out. What I mean is don't pick people or overpick a certain position because you're like, if I stack my team with seven really good running backs, I'll be able to trade some of them to teams that don't have them, and then I'll be able to. get better value or I'm gonna take, you know, a Brock Bowers and a Trey McBride early. That way somebody will trade me for them so they get, you know, they have to come get one it'll never work. By the time first of all, in most leagues, you won't be able to get a hold of everybody to try to trade. Some people in leagues don't trade regardless of what you do. And everyone, everyone will value the players on their roster higher than the value or the value of the players on your roster. Every single time. It's just the way it happens. Everyone wants to win the trade. No one wants to trade if they feel like they're gonna lose the trade. We all know people out there that just won't make a trade that makes sense for both teams because they're afraid that they're gonna end up losing the trade. Amanda: Getting screwed, yeah. Drew: So don't draft with the intention of trading players. Don't draft a guy because your buddy is coming up in You know, your your your your buddy, your girlfriend's coming up in four or five picks and they really like this player, so you're gonna take him early and Amanda: Night Drew: you don't like that player. Don't take that player if you don't like them because you're not gonna get the value that you think you're going to coming back in a trade, and ultimately your team's just gonna be hurt because of it. I have Amanda: Mm-hmm. Drew: tested the theory and it does not work. Amanda: How tell us a little bit about how much people love to trade with you in fantasy football drew. People just start jumping at the bit, right? Drew: At this point, I basically can't get anybody to trade with me. It's just years and years and years of of winning trades. especially in our dynasty league. There's been some trades that Amanda: There's Drew: have happened that I've come out ahead on. But then also like you win enough championships and there are guys that just simply won't trade with me because i it could make their team fifty percent better and my team ten percent better, and they won't do it because it makes my team better at all. They just they will not do it because they cannot see another championship happen, but I it it's spiteful, but I also get it. And I would have to say I would probably be the same way. you know, I'd like to think that I wouldn't, but I probably would be. but that's that's mostly in the Dynasty League. In redraft, you know, we're all pretty open to trades, but we're not a huge trading league. you know, some people are more into it than others. I have a buddy that can't stop himself from trading. And he has zero championships because yep, because he just doesn't Amanda: Is that Daniel? Drew: stop trading when he should, builds a good team and then just he just gets bored and trades people away. So he just likes the act of trading more than actually winning a championship. So Amanda: baffling. There's been many conversations of, you know, Drew and his friend Daniel sitting on my couch. They made a trade, you know, drinking a few beers on the couch and then it's like the firing squad's coming. Like tell not to aim for the bedroom because someone's gonna come light this house up because they're mad that somebody traded Drew something and I wanna take cover just in case. It's a whole thing. Drew: The the last trade we made, which w turns out to be a very even trade, so it's in a dynasty league where you keep the same rosters year after year and you only draft rookies. And it was I got my team again, I was coming off of three straight championships, trying to get a fourth, and I got Brock Bowers and AJ Brown, so an aging receiver. Great value, Amanda: Which is insane for this year, but Drew: but an aging receiver and a obviously an elite young tight end for I gave up Tucker Kraft, who had just emerged as a great tight end. This is before he got hurt. Kenneth Walker, who now on the Chiefs is a amazing, right? That's I would love to have him again. And he got a first round pick from me and I I think he got another Woody Marks or some other running back in return. And he got a first round pick, and I think I got a second from him. So basically I pick pick swap where he gets the better pick. And I when I tell you that half the league was blowing his phone up immediately. to the point of I felt bad for him. I thought it was an even trade and now looking back on it, I I did end up winning another championship, although Brock Bowers was hurt, so that didn't really Amanda: Was hurt. Yeah. Drew: help at all. I mean he was just I I I just felt bad that they would just would not leave him alone. And at this point I think I'd rather have the players that I traded away back. So but yeah. Amanda: Nonetheless. Moving on to number six, our draft tip is to be flexible. And as Ross in Friends says, be willing to pivot, my friends. Pivot, pivot, pivot, pivot, pivot. Listen, you can pivot? Drew: Pivot! Pivot! Amanda: It's the best episode. No, actually the leather pants episode is the best episode. And to this I have Drew: It's a great one. That's a that's a good one or Amanda: I've so many times I've watched it, I laugh every time. Drew: Which one is it where they throw the dead body down the stairs and scare Rachel? It's him and his kid. Yeah. That's a good one too. Amanda: it's the fake when him and his son, Ben, pranker and then they yeah. No, when he puts leather pants on and then he puts lotion on top of the baby powder and it forms a paste and he hits himself in the face. It's so funny. anyways, be flexible. Be willing to pivot. So you can mock draft till you're blue in the face. You can have the best effing game plan in the world walking into draft day and it will fall apart. Okay. There's no predictability of what these other humans are gonna do. How much do they value players? How much do they like the same guy that you like? When are they gonna pick these guys? Right. Some people do weird shit in drafts. Every single year. I'm in an all-girls league. It's like our fourth or fifth year, as our all-girls league. There's always something weird that happens where you're just like, Why? Like, why did that person take that human there? And hey, their team ends up being really good, but you just would have never predicted that that would happen. So be willing to pivot often. And I usually will go in with like a plan of like, Who I'm willing to take where and a rough outline of that. That way I also don't panic. I think is that it another one of our tips because I don't wanna jump ahead, but like, yeah, I don't know. That's part of it, is don't panic, right? Like, cause I can Drew: Don't panic. No. Yeah. Amanda: get very like, my God. It's always like the fucking you're ready to go. You got your pick, and then the guy right before you freaking takes the person you are gonna take, and then you just like, what am I gonna do? Have backup options in your back pocket. Sometimes I'll I'll full blown I'm old school. I'll write that shit down on on a piece of paper or I've like screenshotted like some options that I want to take. That way I don't get lost in the sauce. But be willing to, hey, I really wanted a running back here, but now there's no really good running backs left. I'm gonna go wide receiver instead. Like just be willing to change your plan often because if you don't and you end up panic picking, like it'll end poorly. So don't panic pick people just because you're stressed that your guy went Make an informed decision. Drew: All right, number seven on the board is gonna be it's gonna piggyback on number one a little bit. It's gonna be pay attention to the draft board and the teams picking around you. So part of it is knowing your league and who's drafting around you, but you you gotta pay attention to how the draft is going, not just your draft and who's available, but also who's drafting around you. So if you're picking at the eight spot and the turns coming up and you have six spots on three teams that are drafting between your pick now and your next round pick, and you've got a group of receivers that you really like and a group of running backs that you really like, look at the teams that are drafting between now your pick now and your next pick. Do they need running backs more? Do they need receivers more? And that will help inform your decision on which position to take and who we think might come back around after the turn, right? Same thing for quarterbacks, right? So if I've if I'm in the, you know, Third, fourth round, and I've got the the ninth pick in a 12 team league, and I really like this quarterback. Well, if I look and I see that team 10, 11, and 12 already have quarterbacks, don't take that quarterback then. Take a different position because that quarterback will be back around to you in the next round. So you can pick up some extra value by just paying attention to the draft board, who needs what positions. And it it'll help inform you on who to pick so you're not panicking, right? at that also it same for if you really if you've got one running back that you really like, but you really don't like the guys below him, at least not for another round or two, but you've got three or four receivers that you like, take the running back because more than likely you'll have one of those receivers to pick from on the way back around. So you just gotta pay attention to the entire board. That's why it's best to draft if if you've, you know, not out in the open, not doing something. I always like Amanda: Now Drew: doing it on my computer 'cause you can see things a little bit easier. But set Amanda: It's bigger, yeah. Drew: draft time aside if possible. That way you can pay more attention to just, my turn's up. I gotta pick somebody in two minutes. Amanda: Yeah, yeah. Absolutely. Number eight of our tips here is chasing upside in later rounds. And this is also why we suggest waiting so long to take your defense and kicker because in the later rounds, this is when you're just taking a shot on some guys and you're chasing the potential of their situation, right? So we can take Miami as an example here. We know that the Miami offense is kind of just a clusterfuck of a bunch of nobodies in the wide receiver room. Somebody, maybe. Right, is going to be emerge as the lead, you know, target earner on that offense. Someone maybe like Caleb Douglas in the later rounds, where what if he ends up becoming the lead target? What if he ends up being that guy, even on a shitty team, right? Cause they're not gonna be good this year. That's okay. Even on a shitty team, though, someone who's getting nine, ten targets, that's more valuable than someone like Akean Allen, who just got traded to the Indianapolis Colts, who might get you six points a game. Right. It's he's not gonna go seg. Yeah, he's gonna get utilized in the offense, but he doesn't have the potential to be that boomer bust player that later deeper in the draft. I'd rather take my shot on the guy who could break out, who could absolutely or even just emerge in that offense. It's not just the rookies, right? Sure, the rookies matter there. Maybe they end up becoming really, really great talents. But even some of these other guys who just we don't know what their established offense is gonna look like yet. Someone has to emerge somewhere. Take your shot, take a chance on somebody. because it can help even like a Kenny Ga Kenneth Gainwell. it you know, what if Bucky ends up going down? Like you're betting on like what if Bucky gets hurt? Or what if they just utilize Kenneth Gainwell in the offense because he did act as a pseudo wide receiver for the Steelers last year? What if they need someone didn't someone just go down on their offense, got hurt out for a while? Or no, a Mecca Buka's rumored to be hurt. And isn't there somebody else? A Mecca Buka turf toe? Yeah. I thought, no. Drew: On the Bucks? N not that I saw. but but no, but again, it's it's also a situation where you know, it's not just any backup. It's a backup who's been pr a Amanda: No, strategic backups. Drew: a backup who's been proven that he can produce for a fantasy team and for an Amanda: Mm-hmm. Drew: NFL team, and he's the backup to a player coming off of a year which he didn't play very much because of lingering injury concerns, not just he's coming back from You know, an ACL, which at this point are are pretty repairable and guys come back pretty well within a year. Well, some of these injuries that keep lingering over, especially soft tissues, and they keep reaggravating them, they don't always come back healthy and re aggravation can happen a lot. So it's you know, take that upside on some of those players that you think can be league winners. Again, take your veggies, right? Take your guys that can balance Amanda: Trabagis. Drew: your your line up out, you know what I mean? Like a David Montgomery. But someone Amanda: Mm-hmm. Drew: like a Keenan Allen, you know, veggies aren't six point per week players. Veggies are ten point per week players. Ten point per Amanda: Ten to twelve, yeah. Drew: week players can still help you in a championship. Six point per week players shouldn't be on your Amanda: Disappointed. Drew: roster, right? But a guy, you know, to a man's point in Caleb Douglas for Miami, well what happens if he gets the you know 120 targets on a bad offense, maybe only catches 70 balls. And only has four touchdowns and, you know, a thousand yards. Well, at the end of the year, that's still gonna be a guy that you're probably starting in a lineup that could potentially, because you got him so low in the draft, that could be a league winning type player for you. So take those shots at the end of the draft instead of filling your roster out with guys that are just they they don't have any potential. They've got three guys in Amanda: Mid, yeah. Drew: front of them that they're never gonna be the main guy. Amanda: Yeah, yeah, pass on those and go for your high point scoring possibilities or just like he even said with the injury risk available, hey, why not? it's worth shoot your shot, right? Shoot your shot. All right, give us a number nine, we'll wrap up our last two tips here for you guys. Drew: All right, number nine is go get your guy within reason, but go get your guy. If you are flag planting, this is my guy that I know is gonna have a great year, and you just feel it down to your core, go get him, right? That doesn't mean take a player that has an eighth round ADP in the third round. Don't be ridiculous. But a round or two early. That way you know you're gonna get him, that's perfectly okay, right? Or myself, one of my guys might be, one of my, you know, flag plant guys might be Kenneth Walker this year. I absolutely love him. Well, right now his ADP's in the second, but I know that I might have to be at the back end of the first round. I might jump up and grab him at the back of the first because I I still think that that could be a steal for him, right? Go get him. Just Be appropriate with it. Don't jump four or five rounds up to grab somebody that you really want that will be there a little bit later. but just don't wait too long either. It it's a bit of a dance, you know, song and dance to try to to be perfect Amanda: That's it. Drew: on it, but you still want to maximize value, but you you don't want your buddy that knows you love a player to take him three picks before you in the round that he's supposed to go because that will happen. So maybe take him around early. Don't abuse this, do not overuse this. One or two Amanda: Mm. Drew: of them is more than enough. Y you don't need seven or eight guys that you're jumping ahead to get because you're gonna end up with a pretty bad lineup that doesn't have any value, right? You didn't get any value in the draft. But one or two guys, go get Amanda: Yeah. I mean, when we talk about our own rider dies, which we'll do an episode on shortly, there we're not gonna have like, you know, ten rider dies. There's a few rider dies that we are gonna ride for. It should be the same for you. There should be a few guys who you're hot on more than anybody else. And that doesn't need to make sense to anybody but yourself, and that is okay. there's plenty of hot takes where people will be like, You're dumb, that's stupid. And I'm like, Okay, cool. That's my take. You don't have to agree with it. But like fantasy football at the end of the day is unpredictable as all living hell. You can stat And strategize and look at what the happens usually and all this shit. And then sometimes weird shit just happens. So like trust or gut. Drew: Also sel self reflect with those guys. If if you're a Steelers fan and Michael Pittman's new to town, you're like, he's gonna be so g take emotion out Amanda: Mm. Drew: of it. You might be blinded by picking a guy from your favorite team. It typically ends up being too overvalued by picking a guy from your favorite team. So just be wary of that. I've seen an a I think it was two years ago maybe. No, it was last year. There was a Steelers fan that picked Aaron Rodgers in like the sixth round of a draft because they're huge Steelers fans and you know Aaron Rodgers is gonna be this Hall of Famer and like that was I mean Amanda were sitting it was the a league we do together and we looked at each other like, what in the actual fuck did this person just do? Mind you, this person ended up having a terrible season, but like, don't don't be dumb, but Amanda: Don't be that guy. Don't be that guy. Drew: Yeah. So anyway, number ten. Amanda: Absolutely. Number 10 is don't chase the runs. And again, we kind of talked about this as being a little bit of a dance, right? Know your league. Know when there might be more, like Drew talked about how his team is running back heavy typically, right? But also avoid falling into the trap, right? So, hey, someone picks Josh Allen and then someone picks Lamar Jackson. They're gonna go at the top of your draft board. And then you see somebody else jump up and take Joe Burrow a little bit too inappropriately early, or Jake Drake May a little too inappropriate early. That does not mean you start scrambling and taking quarterbacks that should be drafted sixth, seventh, eighth round. Do not chase the run of, my gosh, everyone's taking this position now. I have to take it. You have to stay true to yourself because if you chase the runs, you're gonna end up either get like taking a player that did not, it wasn't valued at that ADP. you're gonna have to jump a player and take them early and you're gonna miss out on other opportunities. And you're also gonna be backed into a corner of maybe taking a player that didn't even compliment your roster. So you don't want to follow the runs that are happening. They're gonna happen. They happen every single draft. And you just have to kind of like ignore, block out the noise, right? Eyes, I I say this to people all the time. Eyes are on your own fucking paper. Don't look. I don't care what he's doing or what she's doing or what your husband decided to do or what your best friend's drafting for. I do not care. You can do you. I'm gonna do me. Trust your gut. Stay true to all of the other tips, right? That way you don't end up following a run of tight ends and then accidentally picking two onesie positions way too early and being weak at running back and wide receiver when you need more of those, right? So do not chase the runs. They're gonna be there. Don't go down the rabbit hole. Drew: Always remember when runs happen, there's value to be had at the positions Amanda: A lot. Drew: that those people are passing up. So if quarterback four, five, six, seven goes off the board in the third and fourth round, don't jump on the bandwagon because two things are going to happen. One, you're going to get value in the third, fourth, and fifth round whenever that that run happens. You're going to get value at quarterback or at running back and receiver because of all the people that are passing on the players that they should have taken. And two You're gonna get really good value on those other quarterbacks. Once most of your league has quarterbacks, you're gonna be able to wait even longer. That way, instead of getting this quarterback in the eighth round, well, where he's valued at, everyone Amanda: Everyone already has Yeah. Drew: already has him. You might be able to wait till the eleventh or twelfth to get that guy, and then you get value every round coming down the board. So don't don't just follow the runs. The value will be had by by going against the runs. Amanda: Absolutely. All right, guys. Well, that's all we got for you today on our 10 things you need to know before draft day episode.
