Latest / The Immutable Word / EP003 Cults Part 1 - Are We a Cult? Defining Cults and Spotting the Red Flags (Relaunch)
Transcript
- 0:02They'll point to a Baptist church and go, oh, you guys are a cult because you
- 0:06beat your kids, you beat your wives, you do this, right?
- 0:09They'll come up whatever list of egregious things that we commit,
- 0:13allegedly, right? But here's the thing.
- 0:16You look at Marxism, when you look at Black Lives Matter, you look at some of these political,
- 0:20cultural Marxists, they're just as much a cult as, say, the Jehovah's Witnesses
- 0:26or the Moonies or some other, you know, there's a South Korean cult,
- 0:31the Heavenly Mother cult out of South Korea.
- 0:34You can be just as much part of a cult as part of the political left wing or
- 0:39even the political right wing.
- 0:40And I would dare say, even in our circles, independent Baptists,
- 0:45you can have certain churches that imbue a lot of cult-like tendencies.
- 0:53Hey, welcome to the Immutable Word Podcast. This is Robert and Alan.
- 0:57Thank you for joining the show. Today, we're going to talk a little bit about
- 1:00a very interesting, I think, topic and defining a cult.
- 1:05Often, as Bible believers, we're accused of being part of a cult or being in
- 1:13a church that has cult-like tendencies and things like that.
- 1:16And I think sometimes there's some legitimacy to that. So, we're going to,
- 1:20define what a cult is, and then we'll probably do in a future episode is talk
- 1:24about how do we respond to cults or people that we know are in cults whenever
- 1:29they're interested in the truth.
- 1:31So, Alan, any insights, any thoughts before we get started?
- 1:35Yeah, I mean, when you're talking about cults, the first thing you usually want
- 1:38to do is you want to define exactly and specifically what that is.
- 1:43Because you hear the term cult thrown around all the time.
- 1:47You get accused of that if you go to church or if you're a Baptist,
- 1:50if you believe the Bible and you have standards, well, guess what?
- 1:53You're thrown into this bucket. Well, you're just a cult.
- 1:57And it's just most people don't
- 1:59understand what that actually really means because there is a difference.
- 2:05Yep, absolutely. And some of the material that I'm going to pull from today
- 2:10is from a book that I started reading.
- 2:12I haven't finished it, but it's called Combating Cult Mind Control by Dr.
- 2:17Steve Hassan. And he was part of a cult growing up.
- 2:20And he kind of talks about his personal experience, you know,
- 2:23being recruited into a cult, how he escaped it.
- 2:26And then he talks about how cults manipulate members using psychological tactics.
- 2:31You know, he categorizes cults into, you have religious cults,
- 2:35political cults, therapy-based cults, commercial group type cults.
- 2:38And then he talks about the warning signs, the red flags that indicate how a
- 2:43group may be using undue influence, provide strategies for individuals to break
- 2:48free from cultic control, kind of regaining their autonomy.
- 2:52The role of social media, how
- 2:54modern cults can use online platforms for recruitment and manipulation.
- 2:58And then critical thinking resistance. He encourages skepticism,
- 3:02self-awareness, informed decision-making.
- 3:04And there's one verse I think of that pops out in my mind is Acts 17,
- 3:0811, where the Bible says these were more noble than those in Thessalonica and
- 3:12that they searched the scriptures daily to see whether those things were so
- 3:16they they tested it also the bible talks about in first thessalonians 5 is that
- 3:21we're supposed to prove all things so.
- 3:25And one of the Baptistic characteristics, distinctives that we believe in,
- 3:31and the reason why I am a Baptist by conviction, is that what we call the priesthood of the believer.
- 3:36And that actually represents the autonomy of the believer, that we have a mind.
- 3:42God gave us, you know, a sound mind, right?
- 3:46And it's not fear, but love and a sound mind, which means we should be able
- 3:50to think for ourselves. We're critical.
- 3:53You see that all throughout the scriptures.
- 3:55Paul proved the resurrection by the scriptures. He argued and reasoned from the scriptures.
- 4:02He opened and alleged the facts about Christ.
- 4:06He talked like a lawyer. If these things weren't so, therefore this.
- 4:11You know what I mean? Just the way that he argued.
- 4:13So he encouraged critical thinking. There's nothing wrong with that.
- 4:16He even says in one of his Corinthian letters, he says to examine ourselves,
- 4:21whether we be in the faith so i think it's
- 4:23fair to say look i'm going to
- 4:26listen to somebody if they think i'm in a cult if they're open to it i should
- 4:30be able to explain why i'm not in a cult but i think in order to do that we
- 4:36have to properly define it so one of the things and and i'll get your insight
- 4:40here just a second alan because i know that you've got some personal history around this.
- 4:46But one of the things I wanted to say, you know, kind of talk about and we'll
- 4:49kind of focus on when we go through this call or this call, this podcast,
- 4:54is, you know, Stephen Hassan, he developed what he called the BITE model,
- 4:58B-I-T-E. It's an acronym.
- 5:00And he says that if it's a true cult, these are the characteristics,
- 5:05these are the tactics that you'll see employed by a cult.
- 5:08B means behavior control. And we'll talk through some examples of this and,
- 5:13you know, probably our own experience.
- 5:16Experiences, obviously me dealing with cults on the street and witnessing to
- 5:19them and things like that.
- 5:21And you likewise, because I know they've come to our doors, right? And talk to us.
- 5:24But yeah, behavior control, I is for information control, T is for thought control,
- 5:30and E is for emotional control, emotional control.
- 5:34So go ahead, Al. I know you have some, a little bit of personal insight into
- 5:38this too. Yeah. Yeah. I'd be happy to share a little bit more about that.
- 5:42I was it's a rather recent word.
- 5:48So that's what I came to the conclusion. I was like, it probably hasn't been around for too long.
- 5:52But looking at Wikipedia, it says that it's term often applied to new religious
- 5:59movements and other social groups, which have unusual and often extreme religious,
- 6:04spiritual, or philosophical beliefs and rituals.
- 6:08I won't read the entire thing, but that's Wikipedia for you. Yeah.
- 6:13And then trying to find like a more legitimate definition outside of Wikipedia.
- 6:20Well, you know, the root word it's drawn from is culture is drawn from cult.
- 6:25And that's where you develop or fabricate a culture.
- 6:29It could be a cult of personality around a person.
- 6:33It could be a cult, a culture of beliefs that control.
- 6:37But I believe what constitutes a cult is what this bite model indicates is that
- 6:43if it controls your behavior, if it controls your information that you received,
- 6:47ingress and egress information,
- 6:50thought control, how you should think, what you should think,
- 6:54when you should think, and then emotional control, right? That they...
- 6:58Like, one of the things I would think of when I think of emotional control is
- 7:02using guilt and fear to control you.
- 7:05Right? Right. Oh, you didn't come to our gathering tonight.
- 7:10You really missed out. You know, we're the only ones that really care about
- 7:13you. So they manipulate a person's emotions.
- 7:16They make them feel guilty for not being part of their group and so forth and so on, right? Yep.
- 7:22So. And, yeah, I found a better, I think, definition that defines it.
- 7:27But that's very interesting. Yeah, makes sense.
- 7:31Cult, culture, something to have the effect. But it says here religion or religious
- 7:35sect generally considered to be extremist or false with its followers often
- 7:40living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian,
- 7:44charismatic leader, which I think fits.
- 7:47I think it's interesting that they narrow it down to just religious.
- 7:50Because Dr. Steve Vassan, he talks about cults can be religious,
- 7:55political, therapy-based, or commercial-based.
- 7:57Right yeah like being part
- 8:00of a very overpowering company that
- 8:03sells products and goods right they can control
- 8:07your your behavior the people occult following occult
- 8:10following right and so that's the idea is that again the
- 8:14filter is this byte model that's why i love using this byte model because it's
- 8:18it's it's really a true reflection of what it really is you can't really trust
- 8:23today's culture because it's going to define it with bias and it's always going
- 8:28to be tied to some religious affiliation.
- 8:31Here's a perfect example. Here's a perfect example.
- 8:33Somebody that they'll be, they'll point to a Baptist church and go,
- 8:37oh, you guys are a cult because you beat your kids, you beat your wives, you do this, right?
- 8:42They'll come up whatever, whatever list of, you know, egregious things that
- 8:47we commit allegedly, right?
- 8:50But here's the thing, when you look at Marxism, when you look at Black Lives
- 8:55Matter, you look at some of these political,
- 8:57cultural Marxists, they're just as much a cult as, say, the Jehovah's Witnesses
- 9:04or the Moonies or some other, you know, there's a South Korean cult,
- 9:09the Heavenly Mother cult out of South Korea, who's an offshoot of Seventh-day Adventism.
- 9:15You know, so there's obviously, you can be just as much a cult,
- 9:20part of a cult, as part of the political left wing or even the political right
- 9:25wing can be very cult-like in their behavior, right?
- 9:28And I would dare say, even in our circles, independent Baptists,
- 9:33you can have certain churches that imbue a lot of cult-like tendencies.
- 9:40Yeah, I'm drawing some parallels here because what you see, whether it's political,
- 9:45whether it's religious, whether it's something cultural, there's a degree of
- 9:50authoritarianism in each one.
- 9:54You've got somebody that's an extreme authority who's reverenced,
- 9:58who tells you what you can and can't do, and that's where the behavioral control
- 10:02comes in, that's where the information control comes in, thought control, emotional control.
- 10:07I mean, we talk about that with communism, Nazism.
- 10:11Those seem like obvious examples, right? Yeah. They're not religious.
- 10:15They're not religious, but that's an extreme example.
- 10:17Yeah. Those are perfect examples. So here's my, this is, when I think about
- 10:23people or groups or even a church that engages in cult-like behavior,
- 10:29I think part of the root cause of that is this.
- 10:33Yeah, it could be a very charismatic leader. It could be somebody that has a
- 10:37lot of influence and control over a group of people,
- 10:40and maybe they've groomed that group of people to look at them as the ultimate
- 10:46standard or authority, okay?
- 10:49And I believe that the reason why a church or a group will resort to cult-like
- 10:53tendencies, I think it boils down to one thing, because they cannot adequately bring logical,
- 11:00philosophical arguments that line up with Scripture and prove why something is true.
- 11:06If you can't prove it, what is the best way to convince somebody?
- 11:10It's through force, power, influence, manipulation, right?
- 11:14Guilt. That's where cult-like tendencies grow. That's where they flourish.
- 11:18In those types of environments. You'll have a pastor.
- 11:22Look, they want to call Bible-believing Baptists cults. I think there are some
- 11:27Bible-believing Baptists that are very cult-like.
- 11:29I think what stops them from being a 100% full-blown cult is that you can get
- 11:36up and leave that church at any time.
- 11:39But that might come with a price. You could be ridiculed. You could be mocked, right?
- 11:45There'll be emotional control or emotional manipulation that's utilized to guilt
- 11:52trip you, make you feel ashamed because you left the group or the family, right?
- 11:57And so here's the thing. If you
- 12:00cannot convince somebody, the Bible talks about it in the book of Titus.
- 12:04In Titus chapter one, matter of fact, Paul tells, you know, he kind of ordains
- 12:08Titus to go to Crete to start a bunch of churches, right?
- 12:12And he says that he's supposed to use sound doctrine to convince the gainsayers.
- 12:18Not control, not money, not manipulation, sound doctrine.
- 12:25So if a preacher can't get behind a pulpit and influence you through sound doctrine,
- 12:32he's going to use some kind of cult-like tactic.
- 12:36He's either going to use behavior modification
- 12:38He's going to control the information that you have access to.
- 12:41He's going to control the way that you think about things. You're going to have
- 12:45to adopt his perspective, right?
- 12:47Or he's going to try to, he's going to guilt trip you through emotional control.
- 12:51So, a Baptist church can be guilty of being cult-like, but the only reason is
- 12:57because they're using these tactics, these cult-like tactics,
- 13:01as a proxy for doctrine. Yeah.
- 13:05Right? I mean, if you know your Bible well enough, you cannot be controlled mentally. Period.
- 13:12You gotta explain to me what this love bombing is.
- 13:16So, love bombing, the way that Hassan talks about it— And this is under the emotional control.
- 13:22Right. Under emotional control, he says, manipulating emotions through guilt,
- 13:26fear, dependency, often using techniques like love bombing.
- 13:30Imagine this. I'll give you a scenario. Let's just say that you join or you
- 13:35start going to a church that you don't realize is a cult or has very strong cult-like tendencies.
- 13:41All of a sudden, members of the church start showing up and bringing you gifts,
- 13:45inviting you over, having fellowships, showing you all kinds of appreciation and acceptance.
- 13:53Because look, the world doesn't accept you, but we accept you.
- 13:57We love you like our brother or sister.
- 13:59We're going to take care of your needs. We're going to take care of your medical bills for you.
- 14:04I'm not saying those things are bad in and of themselves, But if they're using
- 14:09it to manipulate you and control you, it's a cult.
- 14:13So love bombing is overwhelming you with love and acceptance that the world isn't providing you.
- 14:20So people feel they feel accepted.
- 14:24That's one of the biggest problems people have is they always want some kind of acceptance.
- 14:28They want to be accepted for who they are. So if you have a church that overwhelmingly
- 14:32displays and exhibits this kind of love and emotion and you're part of the brotherhood
- 14:39now and you know what I mean?
- 14:40And then you start hanging out with them and now you feel connected and you're
- 14:43plugged in, quote unquote, into their group.
- 14:49Well, guess what's going to happen? You're going to feel guilty whenever they're
- 14:52out doing something and you're not part of it.
- 14:54You're going to feel guilty when they have an all night, you know,
- 14:58church service and you're not there to fellowship with them.
- 15:01Love bombing is where they're the only source of love and acceptance as far
- 15:07as part of your life is concerned that you can find.
- 15:10And so that's what love bombing is. Yeah, it's really interesting.
- 15:13Yeah. That's where they get their hooks in you. And this is where on the other
- 15:17extreme is guilt or fear.
- 15:21If you find that you want to leave, well, guess what? You're going to be labeled.
- 15:25Right. You're not going to have this support. You're the black sheep. You're the black sheep.
- 15:29You're not going to have this support group anymore. You're not going to have
- 15:32the same level of engagement and love and fellowship that you had before.
- 15:39And so there's the guilt aspect of it. And I've heard that too.
- 15:43It's like, hey, you're, when you leave, I don't care.
- 15:46What is it? What's that group that Tom Cruise is part of?
- 15:49Science. It's not Christian scientists. It's a. Oh, it's Christian scientists.
- 15:53It's something else, whatever.
- 15:55It's flipping my mind. But anyway, that group, that's a perfect example where
- 16:00they control you, right?
- 16:01Mormons, there was people that we knew at a company you and I worked at.
- 16:06They weren't saved, they weren't Christians, but they grew up in a Mormon household.
- 16:12And he was from New York. He was a bus driver.
- 16:15The Mormon church helped him get the mortgage on his house.
- 16:20The Mormon church helped him get the car note, his car that he had.
- 16:25The Mormon church helped establish his bank account.
- 16:28And both of their families were deeply rooted in Mormon beliefs.
- 16:32And when they wanted to try to get away from
- 16:34that they were threatened they were he was threatened with
- 16:37his job he was threatened with his finances because
- 16:40they controlled his bank accounts that's the kind
- 16:43that's the extent that a cult will go through why because they can't convince
- 16:48you through sound logical reasoning arguments right they can't do that so anyway
- 16:54did you find the group yeah church of scientology scientology there it is so
- 16:58scientology is just as much of a cult as Mormonism is.
- 17:02It's just as much of a cult as some Baptist churches that we know of.
- 17:06So here's the problem with Baptist churches, especially independent Baptist churches.
- 17:11They, and look, just for clarification, you know, maybe we have some new listeners
- 17:16here, we are independent Baptists.
- 17:19We are Baptists by conviction because we believe that the Baptist denomination
- 17:23is the closest thing to the Pauline New Testament church model in this age, as far as I'm concerned.
- 17:30We agree with the Baptist distinctives, and maybe one episode we'll go through
- 17:34those Baptist distinctives.
- 17:36And we use the acronym Baptist, B-A-P-T-I-S-T, you know, that the Bible is our final authority.
- 17:41We believe in autonomy of the church, the priesthood of the believer,
- 17:44two ordinances, individual soul liberty, things like that, right?
- 17:48I'm a Baptist, but you have some Baptist preachers who do not know how to properly
- 17:56exegete and exposit the word of God.
- 17:59So in order to control their congregation, they will fear monger them.
- 18:05They will preach and scream behind a pulpit. They will guilt trip their people.
- 18:09They will control them. They'll control the information.
- 18:12Don't listen to this preacher. Don't listen to that group.
- 18:16Don't read this book. Listen, if you have the truth, the truth can withstand scrutiny.
- 18:21If I believe the King James Bible is the Word of God, I can listen to a Bible
- 18:25critic and his reasons why he doesn't believe the King James Bible is the Word of God.
- 18:28If I believe that God exists because of the revelation through God's Word,
- 18:33I can listen to an atheist and him give me his best arguments why he doesn't
- 18:37believe God exists. Period.
- 18:39It's that simple. okay i i you
- 18:41know i hold you know certain things in scripture that i've
- 18:45been challenged by people that hold other beliefs but i will listen to them
- 18:49and i've actually grown in my own faith as a result of it if if if i can be
- 18:55convinced through sound doctrine then i know it's the holy spirit teaching me
- 18:59and not a man so what happens about baptist churches is they become a cult of personality.
- 19:05You have the pastor who is a very controlling, influential person.
- 19:10My pastor can do no wrong. I love my pastor and my pastor is on a pedestal.
- 19:16My pastor is the greatest preacher on the planet, right? You'll hear statements like that.
- 19:21Now, listen, I'm not saying that a pastor doesn't deserve double honor.
- 19:25I'm not saying that a pastor doesn't deserve, you know, our loyalty and friendship and support, right?
- 19:31I'm not saying any of that. What I'm saying is, is when you use,
- 19:35you will let that pastor tell you anything behind that pulpit and you will never
- 19:40open up the Bible and check them against it.
- 19:42That becomes a cult of personality. And if you facilitate that kind of thinking.
- 19:48So if a pastor has to borrow from the cult toolbox in order to achieve whatever
- 19:55goal or whatever objective of that they need to achieve. There's something wrong there. Absolutely.
- 20:01When you have to facilitate that type of culture in the church,
- 20:06you don't have to read that, you don't have to listen to that person,
- 20:09just do what the standard that I'm setting to do.
- 20:13And it's not a cult per se, but there are cultic tools that are being borrowed
- 20:19from When you start hearing phrases like, well, did you check with the pastor
- 20:23before you bought that car? Yeah.
- 20:26Hey, did you talk to the pastor before you thought that maybe you should marry that person?
- 20:30Or, hey, you know, what would the pastor think of that? What does the pastor believe?
- 20:35You see what I mean? Once you start talking like that, you start putting the
- 20:39pastor in a different classification of Christianity than he should be.
- 20:43And I'm not even talking about just Baptist church. I'm talking about any church.
- 20:46You could be in a Mormon church. You're going to be a Jehovah's Witness church.
- 20:48As soon as you start seeing the leadership use one of these characteristics, right?
- 20:53The behavior control information thought and emotional control if
- 20:57you are not being if you're not cognizant and
- 21:00aware that these tactics exist you
- 21:04will easily get sucked into the fray and you will
- 21:06think that you're part of this loving church and the problem is is once they
- 21:10get their hooks into you a lot of times it's too late and and trying to get
- 21:14out of it can create i mean it'll cause so much emotional and psychological
- 21:18and even sometimes physical damage you know what i mean And that's why we as believers,
- 21:25and this is what I just emphasize more than anything as a Bible believer,
- 21:30ought to be the most independent.
- 21:33You know, critical, self-thinking person on the planet is a Bible believer.
- 21:39Because at the end of the day, if you don't want people to dominate your lives
- 21:43and manipulate and control you, then you need to learn how to think for yourself.
- 21:46And God says in Isaiah 40, and in several places actually, but he says in particular,
- 21:51he says that let the wicked man forsake his way and his thoughts.
- 21:58And he says, my thoughts are not your thoughts. My ways are not your ways.
- 22:03We have to learn how to think logically.
- 22:06We have to learn how to think critically because that is the mind God gave us, Jesus Christ.
- 22:12He answered this young man. He says, what's the greatest commandment?
- 22:16He says it's real simple.
- 22:17Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, thy soul, and thy mind.
- 22:22And there's a lot of our independent Baptist friends that don't understand the
- 22:26love the Lord with all thy mind part.
- 22:28They think, oh, I got to just drive pornography from my mind.
- 22:31That's not it. That's not it.
- 22:32There's other things that will combat and compete with the knowledge of God.
- 22:38And that is not understanding sound doctrine. Listen, if you're a Bible believer
- 22:42here, or you claim to be an independent Baptist and you listen to this podcast,
- 22:47I'll give you a real simple challenge.
- 22:49Give me in 30 seconds or less, defend and will define and defend the doctrine of the Trinity.
- 22:57If you can't do that in 30 seconds or less, if you can't give me three or four
- 23:01or five verses defending that, then guess what? You don't love the Lord thy God with all your mind.
- 23:06Period. You could say you love them because you show up to church and you're
- 23:09modest and you listen to the right music and you don't drink,
- 23:12you don't smoke, and you try to be self-temperate and all these other great things.
- 23:16But if you can't define and defend biblical doctrine, especially from the gainsayers,
- 23:23especially, there's so much on top of my mind.
- 23:26But the point is, if you can't do that, then how do you exhibit that you love the Lord with your mind?
- 23:31Because that's intellectual. I know this is only the tip of the iceberg when
- 23:35we're talking about the heart, the mind, and the conscience.
- 23:38We can really go deep there.
- 23:39But just to really sum it up in a nutshell, like right now, just kind of pivoting a little bit.
- 23:45If you're wondering, okay, there are churches, there are preachers,
- 23:49there are environments in independent Baptist circles that exhibit cult-like type behaviors.
- 23:56Doesn't make them a cult per se because they're just stealing some of the tools
- 24:01for control because of their lack of knowledge.
- 24:04But I would say the main differentiation as a true Bible believer is that we have a free conscience.
- 24:09That's what you're alluding to. That's what your implication is,
- 24:11is that we have, God has given us a free conscience to decide for ourselves,
- 24:17to search for ourselves.
- 24:19And just going back to what you said, proving these things, Paul,
- 24:23I think it was in Corinthians, search the scriptures, prove what he's saying.
- 24:28And you'll see this throughout scripture. Decisions being made, it is a choice.
- 24:33And in cults, and in true cults, you don't have a choice.
- 24:37You don't have any choice. You don't have freedom of thought.
- 24:39And that's the premise of Dr.
- 24:41San's book is, it's called Combating Cult Mind Control.
- 24:46So, how does a cult control your mind? by manipulating those tactics,
- 24:53the behavior, the information, the thought, and the emotion.
- 24:56Then eventually, you know what it is. You're right.
- 24:59We're independent, autonomous creatures that have free wills.
- 25:02We can think freely for ourselves.
- 25:05So why do people fall into this trap where they're under mind control?
- 25:11Because they defer and submit themselves to this behavior.
- 25:17If you're part of a church Listen, maybe the baptist church isn't a cult But
- 25:22they have some cult-like tendencies Let's just say,
- 25:26okay, maybe they don't control your thought life But they control your behavior
- 25:31What you should wear, what kind of clothing, what kind of music you should listen
- 25:36to Who your friends should be, who your friends can't be, right?
- 25:39If they control your behavior or manipulate it Maybe they're not a cult,
- 25:44but they're exhibiting cult-like tendencies.
- 25:47And here's, and there's, to me, there's an easy remedy.
- 25:51One of the, he talks about in the book, he encourages skepticism,
- 25:54self-awareness, and informed decision-making.
- 25:57Well, you know what informed decision-making is? That means knowing the truth
- 26:01about something. You have information. Having all the facts before you make a decision, right?
- 26:05So when somebody says, you know, well, we believe in the pre-tribulation rapture.
- 26:10Well, why? Just because. We always believed it. We're independent Baptists because
- 26:15we don't believe in false doctrine.
- 26:18Well, if you fail to properly define it and then properly prove it scripturally
- 26:24that it's true, then I don't need to believe you.
- 26:28But my responsibility as an individual believer is to search the scriptures
- 26:33to see what the Bible says, and then establish my belief system.
- 26:38Everything I believe should be derived from scripture, right?
- 26:40And if I can't back it up with scripture, guess what?
- 26:44I'm probably the subject of some kind of cult-like tendency or control that
- 26:49maybe I'm not aware of. Or culture that's been developed.
- 26:52But yeah, so I think we're coming up on time here, And I think this is easily
- 26:57turning into probably a part two.
- 27:00Yeah, one of the things we didn't touch on, but I thought, you know,
- 27:04because we're talking about backing up a scripture, there are examples of cult-like
- 27:07behavior in scripture, right?
- 27:09You know, just as, I'll give you one example, Judas's betrayal of Jesus Christ, okay?
- 27:15What was used to convince him to betray the man he spent three and a half years with? Money.
- 27:22That's financial control. but but he
- 27:25obviously they manipulated him emotionally because
- 27:29what did judas do after jesus christ was crucified guilt
- 27:33he had the overwhelming guilt he hung himself he committed suicide right so
- 27:39they can they manipulate him with the money they caused him to lie against somebody
- 27:43he knew was the son of god he knew it he was given all the same apostolic signs
- 27:49as the rest of the apostles.
- 27:51He saw all the miracles, everything. He knew it.
- 27:54So he was operating against his own conscience, but there was a certain amount
- 27:59of manipulation and control that the Pharisees had over.
- 28:02And the Pharisees in and of themselves and the Sadducees were very cult-like
- 28:07in a lot of their behaviors.
- 28:08So we see it's consistent with the Word of God, bottom line, right?
- 28:12If we talk about cults, I can identify cult-like behaviors in the Bible and
- 28:17attribute those to modern-day cults.
- 28:19And I'm just saying this to my Baptist brethren, my believers, man, don't be afraid.
- 28:25Here's the difference, and I've always said this, and Alan, you've heard me
- 28:28say this before many times, it's okay to be critical, right?
- 28:33But avoid having a critical spirit, right?
- 28:36Critical spirit is when you're bitter and angry and jealous and envious over
- 28:40somebody and it controls you and it controls your logical thinking pattern.
- 28:45But being critical means, hey, you know what? I'm going to be skeptical of the skeptics.
- 28:51Before I just wholly invest myself into that belief system, I'm going to take
- 28:55some time and I'm going to run it through the filter of scripture and I'm going
- 28:58to pray about this and And I'm going to make sure that I have some sound doctrine
- 29:03that backs up why I believe something.
- 29:05If I believe in a woman being modest or a man not having long hair,
- 29:09I better be able to dive into Scripture and prove it scripturally.
- 29:14Not just because I think it's a shame, right? I can't just sit there and go
- 29:18off my personal opinion.
- 29:19Because, again, then the problem is now I'm letting my conviction or preference
- 29:25or personal standard replace Scripture.
- 29:28So yeah it's good stuff alright Robert I guess we'll wrap it up there we'll
- 29:34go into this a little bit more in depth in the next session there's a lot more
- 29:38here that we can cover and it sounds like it might be a small,
- 29:41series so really appreciate everybody tuning in and listening to us and we'll see you on the next one.
