Latest / Stugotz and Company / Set 2: Meat Me in the A Gap (w/Joe Thomas)
Transcript
- 0:22Speaker 1: Our thanks to Dominique Foxworth for joining us in hour
- 0:25Speaker 1: number one. Joe Thomas, Hall of Famer, going to join
- 0:27Speaker 1: us coming up in about 10 minutes here. We have
- 0:30Speaker 1: some Mount Rushmores. They are pouring in. Stu Gotts and
- 0:33Speaker 1: company guests, we were talking about the Mount Rushmore. We
- 0:36Speaker 1: only came up with three names yesterday. But fans have
- 0:39Speaker 1: been sending in their Mount Rushmore of guests. We'll get
- 0:42Speaker 1: to that in a second. But Taylor has a problem
- 0:45Speaker 1: that he imagines me having the same problem. What is
- 0:49Speaker 1: your problem, Taylor? And why would I have the same
- 0:51Speaker 1: problem as you have?
- 0:53Speaker 2: So every day, Stu, when we come to do the show,
- 0:56Speaker 2: the radio show and the podcast, we're coming to the
- 0:59Speaker 2: iHeart Studios in Miami.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Have you noticed recently, there are so many more cars
- 1:07Speaker 2: in this parking lot.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:09Speaker 2: I am parking in practically another zip code.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Yes, yes.
- 1:13Speaker 2: And this has never been a problem before. I've always
- 1:17Speaker 2: been able to get a pretty good parking spot up close.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Right, yes.
- 1:20Speaker 2: But recently, I am like in the 20th row, and
- 1:25Speaker 2: by the time I get there, I am soaked because
- 1:27Speaker 2: of how far I've had to walk.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Yep, I parked at a dentist office about a mile
- 1:31Speaker 1: and a half away from here. It's unbelievable. That's why
- 1:34Speaker 1: you laugh at me, but I bring in a second
- 1:36Speaker 1: shirt every single time. And the reason I bring that
- 1:38Speaker 1: second shirt in is because I am sweating from where
- 1:42Speaker 1: I park my car to the front doors of the
- 1:44Speaker 1: iHeart Studio. And so I need to change before we
- 1:48Speaker 1: go on air.
- 1:48Speaker 2: But this is only something that's been happening like the
- 1:51Speaker 2: past week.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Well, yes.
- 1:53Speaker 1: What's going on?
- 1:54Speaker 2: I have no idea what's going on. Ricardo's saying school's
- 1:58Speaker 2: back in, but- There's no school around here. There's no
- 2:00Speaker 2: school here. People aren't showing up to school. There's a
- 2:03Speaker 2: nursing school downstairs, guys.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Oh, there is.
- 2:06Speaker 4: Oh, okay.
- 2:07Speaker 1: So that nursing school has semesters, and they're in semester
- 2:10Speaker 1: right now?
- 2:11Speaker 2: That makes way more sense.
- 2:14Speaker 4: Listen, if you're going to pass out from heat exhaustion,
- 2:16Speaker 4: where better? Right with a nurse's office. Mikey, you would
- 2:23Speaker 4: hate how far this walk is.
- 2:25Speaker 3: I just wouldn't come to work. I do the show
- 2:29Speaker 3: from my car on my phone.
- 2:31Speaker 2: And I'm schlepping it, too, with my backpack where it's
- 2:33Speaker 2: even more embarrassing how far I have to walk.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Oh, it's the worst. What Taylor is saying is in
- 2:39Speaker 1: the middle of the summer in July, we had VIP spots.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I mean, I was parking right up front. I would
- 2:44Speaker 1: park right by the building, walk right in. It would
- 2:47Speaker 1: take me five seconds. Now we're parking like 50 rows deep.
- 2:52Speaker 1: It is really annoying.
- 2:55Speaker 3: So is there a market for somebody to come down
- 2:57Speaker 3: there and just ferry people to and from their car
- 3:00Speaker 3: with air conditioning running?
- 3:01Speaker 1: I mean, I'd take it.
- 3:03Speaker 3: I'd make some money.
- 3:04Speaker 2: I might add Ricardo's to his job responsibilities. I might
- 3:08Speaker 2: buy Ricardo a golf cart.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Seriously.
- 3:10Speaker 2: And just say, hey, me and Stu are here. Can
- 3:12Speaker 2: you pick us up?
- 3:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:13Speaker 2: We're about 10 minutes away. Row 50. I'll drop you
- 3:19Speaker 2: a pin.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Right.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Mikey, have you ever been to Gillette Stadium? no well
- 3:26Speaker 2: in in foxborough really there's a yeah i'm shocked you've
- 3:29Speaker 2: never gone to a jet why.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Would i go there i mean because you live so
- 3:33Speaker 1: close i just figured you stumbled into something there i
- 3:35Speaker 1: don't know.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Why would you go there that's where the jets the
- 3:39Speaker 2: bart scott can't wait game is wasn't.
- 3:40Speaker 4: It yeah uh-huh like that would be a great why
- 3:43Speaker 4: would i go there.
- 3:44Speaker 2: That would be a great game to attend Right.
- 3:46Speaker 1: But you had Mikey going.
- 3:47Speaker 3: To the great game.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Well, Gillette has a similar setup where you're parking so
- 3:55Speaker 2: far away and you're having to walk across this long
- 3:57Speaker 2: walkway and you park into the Gillette stadium and it's
- 4:01Speaker 2: another 30 minutes before you get to the stadium. That's
- 4:04Speaker 2: what it feels like right now.
- 4:05Speaker 4: Yes.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Gillette Stadium is in a weird place. People think it's Boston.
- 4:10Speaker 1: It's far from Boston. Couldn't be further away from Boston.
- 4:14Speaker 1: There's a mall there. There are restaurants. There are hotels.
- 4:18Speaker 1: I mean, it's convenient from that standpoint. If you're going
- 4:21Speaker 1: to a Patriots game, you can stay at a hotel
- 4:22Speaker 1: and walk 50 yards to get to Gillette Stadium. But
- 4:27Speaker 1: I'm with you, Taylor. If you're just parking your car,
- 4:30Speaker 1: it will take you a good hour. to get from
- 4:32Speaker 1: your car inside of Gillette Stadium to your seat to
- 4:35Speaker 1: sit down and watch that game.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Now imagine that set up down here, except it's 105
- 4:40Speaker 2: degrees and it feels like we're in Satan's backyard.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Even when you go to a game in Vegas, you
- 4:50Speaker 3: walk through casinos to get where you got to go.
- 4:52Speaker 5: Yes.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Like they're like, no, no, no. You walk through the
- 4:55Speaker 3: air conditioning. Don't get me wrong. You're going to lose
- 4:57Speaker 3: half your money on your way to the game because
- 4:58Speaker 3: you're going to stop and obviously throw down a few
- 5:00Speaker 3: hands of blackjack or whatever.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:02Speaker 3: But like you walk through casinos to get where you
- 5:05Speaker 3: have to go. I have zero desire to do what
- 5:07Speaker 3: you guys are talking about.
- 5:08Speaker 1: What would you describe Miami as? Satan's backyard?
- 5:11Speaker 2: Satan's backyard.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Put it on the poll. Miami in the summer. Is
- 5:14Speaker 1: it indeed Satan's backyard? I believe that it is. So
- 5:19Speaker 1: you have Ricardo. You're buying him a golf cart. They're expensive,
- 5:23Speaker 1: by the way. And he's going to pick us up
- 5:25Speaker 1: row 50 and drive us to.
- 5:28Speaker 3: The front door every day?
- 5:29Speaker 1: Is that what we're doing?
- 5:30Speaker 2: Yeah, it's kind of like a win-win for Ricardo because
- 5:32Speaker 2: he gets a golf cart out of this. Like, who
- 5:34Speaker 2: doesn't want a golf cart? Having a golf cart is
- 5:36Speaker 2: like the American dream.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Put it on the poll. Is having a golf cart
- 5:41Speaker 1: the American dream? Ricardo just muttered, mm-hmm. What are you,
- 5:47Speaker 1: his hype man?
- 5:48Speaker 2: I agree with this.
- 5:50Speaker 1: And I know a guy, Taylor.
- 5:51Speaker 2: We can get a deal.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Oh, wow. Yeah, but dream bigger. Oh, wow.
- 5:56Speaker 2: You know a guy that just does golf carts?
- 5:58Speaker 1: Of course he does. My cousin. Of course.
- 6:00Speaker 2: That's the most Miami thing. Yeah, that's the most Miami thing.
- 6:03Speaker 1: He tricks them out. What does he do? Well, he
- 6:05Speaker 1: buys them, and then he'll, what do you call it,
- 6:08Speaker 1: resell them.
- 6:09Speaker 2: He'll fix them up and resell them and make a
- 6:10Speaker 2: little bit of dough, but we can probably get a deal.
- 6:12Speaker 1: So like real estate. So he'll buy like, you know,
- 6:14Speaker 1: a cheap golf cart, trick it out, and then sell
- 6:16Speaker 1: it for more money?
- 6:17Speaker 2: Right, but this is what Hispanics do.
- 6:22Speaker 5: Sorry.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Put it on the bowl.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Is this what Hispanics do?
- 6:27Speaker 2: No, I will not be putting that one on the bowl.
- 6:30Speaker 1: And I shouldn't be laughing. Only Ricardo can say it
- 6:32Speaker 1: and laugh. All right, so pick us up tomorrow. Row 50.
- 6:38Speaker 5: Done.
- 6:39Speaker 1: I can't do it anymore!
- 6:40Speaker 2: It's so far.
- 6:42Speaker 1: And I just realized I left something in my car
- 6:45Speaker 1: that I have to.
- 6:46Speaker 2: It lives there now. Yeah, it's a tomorrow problem.
- 6:48Speaker 3: It lives there now.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Because then I have to walk there and then back, right?
- 6:53Speaker 1: I mean, I'll need five shirts. We'll get to Joe
- 6:57Speaker 1: Thomas in a second. The Mount Rushmore of Stugatz &
- 7:00Speaker 1: Company guests. We had three yesterday. Mel was one of them.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Kirchham was another. I can't remember the third. We left
- 7:06Speaker 1: out Bomani Jones.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Sims.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Chris Sims. We left out Bomani Jones. We left out
- 7:12Speaker 1: several people. I felt bad about it afterwards. But fans
- 7:15Speaker 1: are sending their Mount Rushmores in, Taylor. Is that what
- 7:18Speaker 1: they're doing?
- 7:18Speaker 4: Yep.
- 7:19Speaker 2: So I have about 10 that I wrote down from
- 7:22Speaker 2: fans being sent in.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Okay.
- 7:23Speaker 2: And some of the names are common across their Mount Rushmores.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Yep.
- 7:29Speaker 2: The most popular name is.
- 7:31Speaker 3: Bomani.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Bomani is almost on everybody's list. Sims is almost on
- 7:35Speaker 2: everybody's list. The one that we're leaving off that are
- 7:39Speaker 2: on a lot of people's Mount Rushmores, Jess. Somebody wrote Sims, Jess, Russini,
- 7:43Speaker 2: Jeff Passon is my Mount Rushmore. Dipthongsong87 wrote that in.
- 7:48Speaker 5: Okay.
- 7:49Speaker 1: It's been a while since we've had Russini on. Why?
- 7:55Speaker 1: But I understand why she'd be on the Mount Rushmore.
- 7:57Speaker 1: She's great. Yeah.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Yes. Sherbro2 said, Bomani, Sims, Russini, Gojo.
- 8:06Speaker 1: All right. That makes sense.
- 8:08Speaker 4: Right.
- 8:08Speaker 1: We left off Gojo.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Yeah step your game up said greenie golic senior bear kirchen.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Recency bias with greenie although he is definitely a great
- 8:18Speaker 1: guest i mean i love having mike on i can
- 8:20Speaker 1: have him on all the time give me those four again.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Greenie golic senior bear kirchen hmm.
- 8:27Speaker 1: All right you have some others what do you got mikey.
- 8:29Speaker 3: I'm surprised we haven't seen a mad dog yet right Same.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Mikey, one of the comments in this thread are, how
- 8:36Speaker 2: has nobody added Russo? And then somebody said, oh, wow,
- 8:39Speaker 2: now I have to redo my list.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Mad Dog at the Super Bowl still was the number
- 8:49Speaker 2: one appearance I think we'll ever have on this show.
- 8:50Speaker 1: I would say Mad Dog and Rossini at the Super Bowl.
- 8:54Speaker 1: It will never, ever get better for us than it
- 8:56Speaker 1: was that week with those two.
- 8:58Speaker 3: They were great. That Racini one got replayed a lot.
- 9:01Speaker 3: Can't imagine why.
- 9:03Speaker 1: And a bunch of credible news outlets taking me to God.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Seriously. It was delightful.
- 9:08Speaker 2: The only names that I haven't mentioned yet that are
- 9:10Speaker 2: on people's Mount Rushmore, Lucy, Adnan, and Mark Hockman.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Hock is great. All of them are great. And I
- 9:19Speaker 1: feel bad having to narrow it down to four. We
- 9:21Speaker 1: shouldn't be doing that.
- 9:22Speaker 3: See, what you got to do. is you've got to
- 9:26Speaker 3: pick three, and then the fourth is whoever you have
- 9:28Speaker 3: on right now.
- 9:32Speaker 1: I mean, Dominic Foxworth should be, he was on in
- 9:35Speaker 1: hour number one, he should be considered for the Mount
- 9:38Speaker 1: Rushmore of guests, right?
- 9:39Speaker 2: He's on mine.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 9:40Speaker 1: He's on yours, really. You have yours.
- 9:43Speaker 5: Yep.
- 9:43Speaker 1: All right, give it to me.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Well, now it's different than the one from yesterday.
- 9:48Speaker 1: That's okay. That's what sports radio is all about.
- 9:52Speaker 2: My Mount Rushmore today of guests Bomani, Dominique, Mad Dog.
- 10:01Speaker 4: Man.
- 10:02Speaker 3: Say it. Say it.
- 10:03Speaker 5: Say it.
- 10:04Speaker 2: It's Tim Kirchner.
- 10:05Speaker 5: Say it.
- 10:05Speaker 2: It's Tim Kirchner.
- 10:06Speaker 1: It's Tim Kirchner. He loves Kirchner. Who do you have, Mikey?
- 10:09Speaker 3: Cut this. Give it to Sims.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Did he leave out Mel? Oh, my God.
- 10:12Speaker 2: I left out Sims.
- 10:12Speaker 3: He left out Mel?
- 10:13Speaker 1: He left off Sims?
- 10:14Speaker 4: Yes.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Mel was your guy yesterday, Lance. I mean, what are
- 10:16Speaker 1: you doing?
- 10:17Speaker 4: Oh, man.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Sims, make sure we play that back for Mel and
- 10:23Speaker 1: Sims when they come on.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Just remember, Sims, I would never leave you off. Right.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Do you have a Mount Rushmore, Mikey? Like when I
- 10:30Speaker 1: tell you.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Oh, no, I'm not. I'm not walking into that trap
- 10:33Speaker 3: that Taylor just walked into. Absolutely not. You know who's
- 10:36Speaker 3: on my Mount Rushmore? Whoever's on next.
- 10:38Speaker 1: And that is Joe Thomas. College football Saturdays are already

- 12:01Speaker 1: Joining us now is pro football hall of famer and
- 12:03Speaker 1: NFL network analyst, Joe Thomas. Joe is, he's played 10,363
- 12:09Speaker 1: straight snaps without missing one. That's ridiculous. And it turns
- 12:14Speaker 1: out he raises cattle the same way he played. Joe's
- 12:17Speaker 1: hall of fame farms is producing some of the tastiest
- 12:21Speaker 1: beef on planet earth. Joe, tell us about it, man.
- 12:25Speaker 5: Yeah, man. Thanks for having me on Stu. I'm out
- 12:28Speaker 5: in Wisconsin here. putting a passion project into play every
- 12:32Speaker 5: single day. I'm out raising Japanese Wagyu, American Wagyu, Angus
- 12:36Speaker 5: cattle out here, teaching my kids how to farm and ranch,
- 12:40Speaker 5: and then bringing that beef right to the consumer. We
- 12:42Speaker 5: sell online, and then we've got distribution nationally through retail
- 12:46Speaker 5: chains and through restaurants, and it's just a beautiful day.
- 12:49Speaker 5: Every day I get to go outside and chase cattle
- 12:52Speaker 5: and also chase my kids around a little bit.
- 12:54Speaker 1: It sounds delightful. Do the kids like it? Do they
- 12:56Speaker 1: enjoy it?
- 12:58Speaker 5: Heck yeah. I mean, I love it. You know, being
- 13:00Speaker 5: able to work alongside your kids and teach them something
- 13:02Speaker 5: when they're actually listening to you is kind of something
- 13:05Speaker 5: that's new, but when you got a 1500 pound cow
- 13:07Speaker 5: or a 1600 pound steer on the other side of
- 13:10Speaker 5: the gate, like they're listening pretty intently because lives are
- 13:14Speaker 5: on the line and it's awesome. I mean, they, they
- 13:17Speaker 5: love being out here. It's kind of the middle of
- 13:19Speaker 5: nowhere in the driftless area of Wisconsin, but it's a
- 13:21Speaker 5: beautiful part of the country. if you've never been here
- 13:24Speaker 5: and we raised some fantastic beef because of the terroir,
- 13:27Speaker 5: it's like fine wine, you know, we're trying to produce
- 13:30Speaker 5: that healthiest, tastiest beef on planet earth. And it always
- 13:33Speaker 5: starts with how they're raised and what they're eating.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Uh, we'll promote it again on the way out. Hall
- 13:38Speaker 1: of fame farms.com is the website. Uh, if you want
- 13:41Speaker 1: to check it out, I am wondering here, Joe, what'd
- 13:44Speaker 1: you make as a former Cleveland Brown is maybe the
- 13:46Speaker 1: greatest Cleveland Brown player of all time. Uh, what'd you
- 13:49Speaker 1: make of their decision to go with Deshaun Watson? Uh,
- 13:52Speaker 1: over Sanders?
- 13:55Speaker 5: I wasn't totally surprised. I got to spend a lot
- 13:57Speaker 5: of time with them in training camp, calling their preseason games,
- 14:00Speaker 5: and then doing some coaching when I was out there.
- 14:03Speaker 5: And for the majority of training camp, Deshaun was ahead
- 14:06Speaker 5: of Shadur as far as comprehension of the offense, being
- 14:09Speaker 5: able to get the football out of his hand, operation,
- 14:12Speaker 5: getting the offense in the play that Coach Munkin wants,
- 14:16Speaker 5: and making sure that the ball is being delivered on
- 14:18Speaker 5: time and on the money, and being a two-play quarterback.
- 14:21Speaker 5: Coach Munkin's talked about that throughout his time here. He's
- 14:24Speaker 5: used to Lamar Jackson in Baltimore, so he likes a
- 14:27Speaker 5: quarterback that if things break down, they can break outside
- 14:29Speaker 5: the pocket. They can make a first down with their legs.
- 14:32Speaker 5: They can also break outside the pocket and then throw
- 14:34Speaker 5: the football deep down the field. And so I think
- 14:36Speaker 5: even though the last preseason game that both those guys
- 14:39Speaker 5: played in, which was the second one, was an abysmal
- 14:41Speaker 5: failure for Deshaun, and Shadur played very well. I think
- 14:44Speaker 5: Coach Munkin looked at the totality of their work from
- 14:47Speaker 5: the time that he got there, and he said, hey,
- 14:49Speaker 5: I'm a 60-year-old first-time head coach. I'm not trying to
- 14:52Speaker 5: win for somebody else into the future or set the
- 14:54Speaker 5: table for somebody else to have success. I need to
- 14:56Speaker 5: win now, and I'm trying to instill and install my
- 14:59Speaker 5: culture from week one. So I'm gonna make a decision
- 15:01Speaker 5: for week one and then see what happens after that.
- 15:04Speaker 5: And out of his own words, he has said that
- 15:07Speaker 5: he feels Deshaun is able to operate the offense at
- 15:11Speaker 5: the best level of the quarterbacks on the roster and
- 15:13Speaker 5: gives them the best chance to win in week one.
- 15:15Speaker 5: And that was solely what the decision was based on.
- 15:18Speaker 3: Joe, you mentioned the beef. And when you look at
- 15:20Speaker 3: the Browns, they got rid of their entire beefy off
- 15:23Speaker 3: offensive line, historic turnover. All five guys are gone bringing
- 15:27Speaker 3: in five new guys. How much will that affect what
- 15:30Speaker 3: happens with Deshaun Watson?
- 15:32Speaker 5: I think it affected things early on, but being around
- 15:35Speaker 5: that offensive line, they actually gelled pretty quickly. I was
- 15:37Speaker 5: pretty impressed. I mean, they, they brought in a bunch
- 15:39Speaker 5: of veterans and, across the board. Obviously they got Spencer Fano,
- 15:42Speaker 5: who's their rookie first round draft choice, first offensive lineman
- 15:45Speaker 5: off the board in the draft this past season. He's
- 15:48Speaker 5: been growing in leaps and bounds. He earned that starting
- 15:50Speaker 5: job midway through training camp. He's been looking great. And
- 15:53Speaker 5: then the rest of those guys, they've got a lot
- 15:54Speaker 5: of experience and I think they've built a chemistry pretty quickly.
- 15:59Speaker 5: And that's really important on that offensive line. But I
- 16:01Speaker 5: think just leaning into the experience that those guys have
- 16:03Speaker 5: had in other places, albeit, but in similar type offenses,
- 16:07Speaker 5: it made them gel pretty quickly. And I think They'll
- 16:09Speaker 5: be one of the sneaky strengths of the Browns offense
- 16:11Speaker 5: this year.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Joe, as a Hall of Fame offensive lineman, a lot
- 16:14Speaker 2: of the times we hear that voters don't really know
- 16:17Speaker 2: what goes into offensive line play, so it's harder for
- 16:19Speaker 2: offensive linemen to go into the Hall of Fame. I
- 16:22Speaker 2: want to make you the head of the Hall of
- 16:24Speaker 2: Fame for offensive linemen.
- 16:26Speaker 3: He should be.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Yeah, he's the greatest ever.
- 16:28Speaker 2: Every offensive lineman comes to your desk, and then you
- 16:31Speaker 2: have the say. You stamp them Hall of Famer or
- 16:33Speaker 2: not a Hall of Famer.
- 16:34Speaker 1: I like it.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Like the emperor from Gladiator.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 16:38Speaker 5: I'm ready to be the Caesar Augustus of offensive linemen
- 16:40Speaker 5: in the Hall of Fame. That's quite a bit of pressure.
- 16:44Speaker 5: There's been a lot of great offensive linemen, but you're right.
- 16:46Speaker 5: It's always difficult because you talk about quarterbacks going into
- 16:49Speaker 5: the Hall of Fame. You talk about coaches. You talk
- 16:51Speaker 5: about receivers. They have stats. You can stack them up
- 16:54Speaker 5: against guys from other generations, but it's a lot harder
- 16:57Speaker 5: on the offensive line, especially if you look at the
- 16:59Speaker 5: pre-pro football focus era where really the quality of the
- 17:03Speaker 5: offensive line play came down to Hey, did his peers
- 17:06Speaker 5: vote him into the Pro Bowl, which turns into be
- 17:09Speaker 5: a little bit of a popularity contest in years past?
- 17:13Speaker 5: And what does the media in that area think about
- 17:16Speaker 5: that offensive lineman? And has he had a good running
- 17:19Speaker 5: back with him? So they've got some rushing yardage. Did
- 17:22Speaker 5: the quarterback play well? So he didn't take a lot
- 17:24Speaker 5: of sacks. And how did they win in the playoffs
- 17:26Speaker 5: in the Super Bowl? And so those are things that
- 17:29Speaker 5: oftentimes don't reflect necessarily on the job that that certain
- 17:33Speaker 5: offensive lineman did or didn't. But I think we've come
- 17:36Speaker 5: a long way with pro football focus because they may
- 17:38Speaker 5: not be perfect, but at least they're watching every play
- 17:41Speaker 5: and they're grading all those guys. So you have a
- 17:43Speaker 5: general idea of who's playing well, who may not be
- 17:46Speaker 5: playing quite as well. And you can look back in
- 17:49Speaker 5: time throughout a player's career and say like, hey, he
- 17:51Speaker 5: consistently graded as one of the top five players at
- 17:53Speaker 5: his position. He is definitely Hall of Fame worthy, at
- 17:56Speaker 5: least of that consideration.
- 17:58Speaker 1: How would Joe Thomas as a former offensive lineman feel
- 18:01Speaker 1: if he was going out on the field still playing
- 18:03Speaker 1: and he was going up against Aaron Donald and Miles Garrett?
- 18:08Speaker 5: Here's my real quick. This is my retirement paper. I
- 18:11Speaker 5: would like to retire because I am not walking on
- 18:14Speaker 5: that field to go against those two beasts. I mean,
- 18:18Speaker 5: when I think of in my generation in the last
- 18:20Speaker 5: 40 years watching offensive and defensive linemen go at it,
- 18:24Speaker 5: the best defensive tackle I ever played against. Or ever
- 18:27Speaker 5: saw was Aaron Donald.
- 18:28Speaker 3: Wow.
- 18:29Speaker 5: The best defensive end I ever played against or saw
- 18:32Speaker 5: was Miles Garrett. And to put both guys on the
- 18:35Speaker 5: same side is just flat out unfair.
- 18:38Speaker 3: Joe, there's always a lot of pressure when great players
- 18:42Speaker 3: retire to come back. I remember everybody in Cleveland clamoring
- 18:45Speaker 3: for you to return. But Aaron Donald's actually doing it one,
- 18:49Speaker 3: two years after hanging it up. What do you expect
- 18:52Speaker 3: from him? Do you expect that we see 85% Aaron Donald, 100%?
- 18:58Speaker 5: So I think, honestly, Aaron Donald is a unique specimen.
- 19:03Speaker 5: There is one of one in the history of the
- 19:05Speaker 5: world that is Aaron Donald. And so, honestly, I think
- 19:08Speaker 5: from a performance standpoint, athletically, power, I'm sure he's been
- 19:11Speaker 5: working out. He's a guy like me that gets up
- 19:14Speaker 5: and works out probably every day. And I think he's
- 19:17Speaker 5: going to be able to play great. My big question
- 19:19Speaker 5: is what type of work has he been putting in
- 19:21Speaker 5: the last two years around the clock? You know, I
- 19:25Speaker 5: train to feel good and to try to stay in shape.
- 19:28Speaker 5: But I don't train for the NFL anymore. There's a
- 19:31Speaker 5: difference between being in good shape and being in NFL shape.
- 19:33Speaker 5: And so my question is, I think he'll be ready
- 19:36Speaker 5: for those first few games. But can his body survive
- 19:39Speaker 5: the duration of a 17 game season? That's really the question,
- 19:43Speaker 5: because you've got to put in that training around the
- 19:44Speaker 5: clock in the offseason to build up those calluses on
- 19:48Speaker 5: your body to be able to build that durability. so
- 19:50Speaker 5: that you can survive an NFL season. There's a beating
- 19:53Speaker 5: that your body takes that when you retire, you quickly
- 19:56Speaker 5: forget what that was like and you forget the work
- 19:58Speaker 5: that was put in to get you to that position
- 20:01Speaker 5: to be able to play 17 games in a season.
- 20:04Speaker 5: And I do question if he's going to be able
- 20:07Speaker 5: to stay on the field for 17 weeks, because that
- 20:10Speaker 5: is a long season. And to do it after two
- 20:13Speaker 5: years off, I mean, it takes a special human, but hey,
- 20:15Speaker 5: hats off to him. If there's anybody on planet earth
- 20:18Speaker 5: that can do that, it's Aaron Donald.
- 20:19Speaker 1: What is the last time someone asked Joe Thomas to
- 20:21Speaker 1: come back?
- 20:23Speaker 5: Oh, it's been a few years. I had my hip
- 20:25Speaker 5: replaced last year. So I think that finally put everybody
- 20:28Speaker 5: on notice that this is not happening. I do not
- 20:31Speaker 5: have any gas left in the tank. And I always
- 20:33Speaker 5: told people like, look, I didn't retire because I was
- 20:35Speaker 5: bored and wanted to go farm. Although I love farming now.
- 20:38Speaker 5: And trying to raise amazing beef, but I retired because
- 20:41Speaker 5: my body could not handle it anymore. Trust me. Would
- 20:44Speaker 5: I have loved to make the money that those guys
- 20:46Speaker 5: are making right now and come back?
- 20:47Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 20:48Speaker 5: There's no better job in the world than playing in
- 20:51Speaker 5: the NFL. And if you can do it, play as
- 20:52Speaker 5: long as you can. But I did not have one
- 20:55Speaker 5: more snap left in my body.
- 20:57Speaker 1: But if McVay calls today and just says, hey, Joe,
- 20:59Speaker 1: we need you for a couple of snaps. You'll be
- 21:01Speaker 1: a member of the Rams. We have a good chance
- 21:02Speaker 1: of winning the Super Bowl. Would you think about it?
- 21:04Speaker 1: I mean, just maybe.
- 21:07Speaker 5: If it was the week of the Super Bowl, you
- 21:08Speaker 5: could sign me. I'd show up. I'd give my best
- 21:11Speaker 5: on that field. But make sure you got that golf
- 21:13Speaker 5: cart with the stretcher. It's in park, but it's turned
- 21:18Speaker 5: on and ready to come pick me up on that
- 21:20Speaker 5: field because I'm going to need it.
- 21:21Speaker 1: All right, we'll get you out of here in a
- 21:22Speaker 1: couple of minutes. I have a question for Taylor and Mikey.
- 21:25Speaker 1: If I had Joe's background, would you guys think of me?
- 21:28Speaker 1: Because in his background, there were tools. There's farming equipment.
- 21:32Speaker 1: He's a man.
- 21:33Speaker 2: It's a man's background. Yes.
- 21:34Speaker 3: Would you say man's background?
- 21:36Speaker 1: Would I look more manly if I had that kind
- 21:38Speaker 1: of background?
- 21:40Speaker 5: No.
- 21:40Speaker 2: I wonder whose house you are.
- 21:42Speaker 3: All right.
- 21:46Speaker 1: I just had to ask because Joe is a man.
- 21:49Speaker 1: What's the best cut of steak, Joe? We had this
- 21:50Speaker 1: conversation on the air the other day. What is the
- 21:54Speaker 1: best cut of steak, according to Joe Thomas?
- 21:58Speaker 5: You know, out of the traditional middle meats, you know, ribeyes, strips, tenders,
- 22:01Speaker 5: I'm a New York strip guy. However, the Wagyu that
- 22:05Speaker 5: we grow on our farm is the most tender, marbled, mouthwatering,
- 22:08Speaker 5: delicious beef you've ever had. And so that makes not
- 22:11Speaker 5: just those middle's incredible delicacies, but everything on the shoulder,
- 22:16Speaker 5: all the way to the sirloin and the cow. So
- 22:18Speaker 5: if you ask me my favorite, it's the Bavette. It's
- 22:20Speaker 5: like sirloin flaps, so it's inside. It's got a little
- 22:23Speaker 5: thicker grain, but incredible tenderness and beefy flavor. Marbling is
- 22:27Speaker 5: off the chain and melts in your mouth. You can
- 22:29Speaker 5: cook it in a variety of different ways. You can
- 22:30Speaker 5: even throw it on the smoker. And then my second
- 22:32Speaker 5: favorite is a nod to my Brazilian friends, the picanha.
- 22:37Speaker 5: It's the sirloin butt. It's unbelievable. If you've ever had
- 22:40Speaker 5: them at those Brazilian steakhouses when they come around on
- 22:43Speaker 5: the big skewers with the swords.
- 22:45Speaker 1: Like, you know how great life is when you're sitting
- 22:47Speaker 1: there in a coma.
- 22:48Speaker 5: You're just sweating out that Wagyu beef. And life is
- 22:52Speaker 5: absolutely at its finest when you're doing that. So if
- 22:55Speaker 5: you go on our website, Hall of Fame Farms, check
- 22:57Speaker 5: out the chef's cuts. We do everything nose to tail.
- 23:00Speaker 5: We treat every athlete like a pro athlete. So they
- 23:02Speaker 5: get individual care and it creates some of the best
- 23:05Speaker 5: beef I guarantee anybody has ever had. It's mouthwatering. It's delicious.
- 23:10Speaker 5: And we offer the stuff that you can't get in
- 23:11Speaker 5: a grocery store because we do that nose to tail butchery.
- 23:13Speaker 5: So check out the bavette. Check out the picanha. I
- 23:16Speaker 5: guarantee you'll say it's the best steak of your life.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Joe, what do you think about a podcast combining football
- 23:22Speaker 2: and meat? And it's called Meets Me in the A-Gap.
- 23:26Speaker 5: Jesus. I think it's a done deal. If you're producing,
- 23:30Speaker 5: I'm there every day, baby. I mean, can you imagine
- 23:33Speaker 5: a better combination? Like on planet Earth for an American
- 23:38Speaker 5: that loves football? I mean, those are just two things
- 23:40Speaker 5: that go together better than anything that you've ever been around.
- 23:44Speaker 5: And I would be happy to put my name on
- 23:46Speaker 5: that one.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Uh, so you're saying you're in like, this is a
- 23:48Speaker 1: binding contract.
- 23:49Speaker 2: Okay.
- 23:50Speaker 5: Done deal. As long as you don't mind me doing
- 23:52Speaker 5: it from the barn.
- 23:53Speaker 1: I don't get, no, we want you doing it from
- 23:54Speaker 1: the barn. What are you talking about?
- 23:55Speaker 3: It can't be done anywhere else.
- 23:58Speaker 5: Naturally.
- 23:59Speaker 1: All right, perfect. Well, I got the setup.
- 24:00Speaker 5: I'm out here at the farm. So I'll just take
- 24:02Speaker 5: her outside by the cattle and we'll be rolling and
- 24:04Speaker 5: I'll bring the smoker out there too.
- 24:06Speaker 1: Uh, your second answer on best cut was a big
- 24:08Speaker 1: win for Mikey. A when you go to those Brazilian
- 24:10Speaker 1: steak houses, are you just constantly on green? Do you
- 24:12Speaker 1: ever flip the coin over to red Joe?
- 24:15Speaker 2: I never have.
- 24:15Speaker 5: It's a pride thing with me too. First of all,
- 24:18Speaker 5: you never touch the salad bar and you never touch
- 24:20Speaker 5: the bread. You put the green down until your friends
- 24:22Speaker 5: are ready to leave and you just eat everything. You
- 24:24Speaker 5: never say no. Eat everything that comes to your table.
- 24:27Speaker 5: I guarantee you'll thank me later.
- 24:30Speaker 1: All right, Joe, we appreciate the time. Halloffameforms.com if you
- 24:35Speaker 1: want to check out his website. Joe, we appreciate it.
- 24:38Speaker 1: You look really happy, man. You are happy, Joe. You
- 24:41Speaker 1: are happy working with your kids, teaching them how to
- 24:43Speaker 1: be farmers. You're doing what you love. You seem very happy,
- 24:47Speaker 1: and I'm happy for you. Thank you for doing this,
- 24:48Speaker 1: my man.
- 24:50Speaker 5: Thanks for having me on. And if you send me
- 24:51Speaker 5: your address, I'll get you some jerky, some of our
- 24:53Speaker 5: beef sticks. It's the best you've ever had. Would love
- 24:55Speaker 5: to share with you guys, give you an opportunity to
- 24:58Speaker 5: just taste what greatness is like.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Okay. That'll be my address.
- 25:02Speaker 2: We're going to hold you to that, yeah.
- 25:04Speaker 3: That'll be my address.
- 25:06Speaker 1: We're sending you everyone's address. And we look forward to
- 25:11Speaker 1: launching a new podcast with you.
- 25:12Speaker 3: Thank you, Joe. I appreciate it, guys.
- 25:14Speaker 5: Thanks for having me on.
- 25:16Speaker 4: All right.
- 25:16Speaker 3: Thank you, man.
