- 0:00Speaker 1: This is all Most Famous Beyond the Bachelor with Susie Evans.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Hi, and welcome back to be on the Bachelor. This
- 0:08Speaker 2: is your host, Susie Evans. Today we are going to
- 0:11Speaker 2: be chatting with Kate Vogel, who performed on Jason Mesnick's
- 0:14Speaker 2: season of The Bachelor back in two thousand and nine.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Her band Your Future Ghost just released a new single,
- 0:20Speaker 2: the Only One in May, so we're going to be
- 0:22Speaker 2: chatting about her time on the show and life and
- 0:25Speaker 2: career since Kate.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Welcome to the show. Thank you for being here. Thank you, Susie,
- 0:31Speaker 1: thanks so much for having me.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Absolutely Okay, first things first, we'll help right in. What
- 0:35Speaker 2: was it like performing your song? I won't disagree on
- 0:39Speaker 2: Jason's season of The Bachelor.
- 0:41Speaker 1: It was so cool. Honestly, it's so fun to talk
- 0:43Speaker 1: about this because, like you said, it's a throwback. It's
- 0:46Speaker 1: been a minute, but it was incredibly cool. I mean,
- 0:50Speaker 1: every single one of my friends watched the show. I
- 0:53Speaker 1: grew up you know, watching the show. So it was
- 0:55Speaker 1: a really cool opportunity. First of all, just to be
- 0:58Speaker 1: able to play in my music, like uh, just interesting
- 1:03Speaker 1: venue for a show and so different from sort of
- 1:06Speaker 1: the other stuff I was doing on tour. But also
- 1:08Speaker 1: it was just really fun to be a part of
- 1:11Speaker 1: sort of a surprise date night for you know, the
- 1:16Speaker 1: couple and everything. And they were super sweet, Jason and
- 1:20Speaker 1: Natalie was the girl, were incredibly sweet and so it
- 1:24Speaker 1: was really fun. And it was in Vegas too, so
- 1:26Speaker 1: it was like it's always fun to have an excuse
- 1:28Speaker 1: to go do Vegas, you know, like it was great.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Okay, so did you get to meet them after you
- 1:35Speaker 2: performed or did you get to meet them before?
- 1:38Speaker 1: How did that work? It was after so it was
- 1:41Speaker 1: I think I was like a surprise for uh, Natalie
- 1:46Speaker 1: that Jason had arranged like this, you know, private concert
- 1:51Speaker 1: for her, and you know, the curtains opened and then
- 1:55Speaker 1: me and my band played our song and then I
- 1:58Speaker 1: got to chat with them afterwards. So it was cool.
- 2:01Speaker 1: It was fun to be like a little surprise guest.
- 2:05Speaker 1: That was I don't know if I've ever done, like
- 2:06Speaker 1: been a surprise for anyone before as a musician, So
- 2:09Speaker 1: that's pretty cool. That's really cool. I do love that
- 2:11Speaker 1: about The Bachelor.
- 2:12Speaker 2: They really go above and beyond to make things dramatic
- 2:15Speaker 2: and super exciting for whoever's on the day, even the lead,
- 2:20Speaker 2: whoever the lead is. It's like, it's not very a
- 2:23Speaker 2: very normal thing to get a private concert at any
- 2:26Speaker 2: point in life.
- 2:26Speaker 1: So it's pretty cool. Yeah, it is. It's really impressive
- 2:29Speaker 1: the stuff that they come up with, you know, it's
- 2:32Speaker 1: it's super super creative, so that it was really fun
- 2:34Speaker 1: to be a part of that. And to be honest,
- 2:36Speaker 1: it was really cool to be on an unscripted set
- 2:41Speaker 1: because at the time I was playing my music and
- 2:44Speaker 1: acting on a scripted show called Wantree Hill on the
- 2:47Speaker 1: CW and I it was like mind blowing to me
- 2:51Speaker 1: that the cameras are rolling but there's no script and
- 2:55Speaker 1: you know, like I remember asking one of the producers
- 2:58Speaker 1: who was helping us out taking us to our green room,
- 3:01Speaker 1: you know, telling us where to go. And my first
- 3:03Speaker 1: question was, like I like came in hot with that
- 3:07Speaker 1: was like, so is any of this real or is
- 3:09Speaker 1: this just like totally fake? Like do these people actually
- 3:12Speaker 1: like each other? And he did not think it was funny,
- 3:15Speaker 1: to be completely honest, Yeah, he was probably just stressed,
- 3:19Speaker 1: you know what I mean. He was just like this
- 3:20Speaker 1: girl like come on, But but yeah, I was just
- 3:24Speaker 1: fascinated by the idea and so obviously you know all
- 3:29Speaker 1: about this, so I really should be asking you, like,
- 3:32Speaker 1: what is I know I have friends who work in
- 3:35Speaker 1: editing and reality TV, which is an art form in
- 3:37Speaker 1: and of itself, But what was that like being in
- 3:41Speaker 1: a situation where it's all fluid and the cameras are
- 3:44Speaker 1: rolling and you never know what's going to happen next.
- 3:46Speaker 1: So that's a great question.
- 3:48Speaker 2: I think it's fun to hear other people that have
- 3:50Speaker 2: come in for a glimpse of n I always like
- 3:52Speaker 2: to ask people similar to what you're saying, like did
- 3:55Speaker 2: you think it was real? Do you think it's real now?
- 3:57Speaker 2: Because that's the number one question people ask me. What
- 4:00Speaker 2: is it scripted? Or do they make you say certain things?
- 4:03Speaker 2: And like, technically no one can make you say anything,
- 4:06Speaker 2: so a lot of it is obviously unstool. All of
- 4:10Speaker 2: it's unscripted, but there's certainly like it's produced, you know,
- 4:14Speaker 2: like the producers, Yeah, like putting you in scenarios and
- 4:19Speaker 2: giving you the opportunity to say something or don't say something.
- 4:23Speaker 2: But at the end of the day, like it's yeah,
- 4:26Speaker 2: free will. But it is, like it's pretty interesting because
- 4:30Speaker 2: I think for someone like me, I would get really
- 4:33Speaker 2: self conscious of the cameras.
- 4:35Speaker 1: I don't know if you. I mean, you obviously.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Act and perform on stage, and I used to do
- 4:42Speaker 2: performance growing up, but I always had really bad stage right,
- 4:45Speaker 2: and I felt similarly being on the show. I would
- 4:47Speaker 2: be like talking to the guy and all of a
- 4:50Speaker 2: sudden you see like a cameraman coming in closer, and
- 4:53Speaker 2: you're like, this is so weird, Like you just can't
- 4:56Speaker 2: help but get in your head. So it's it was
- 4:58Speaker 2: kind of weird for me. But and it sounds like
- 5:01Speaker 2: you probably have a lot of experience, but unscripted is
- 5:05Speaker 2: a new it's like new territory for almost anybody.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, that makes total sense. I feel like it
- 5:12Speaker 1: would be almost more weird when you don't have a
- 5:16Speaker 1: script to stick to, because for me, yeah, that was
- 5:19Speaker 1: something that you have to kind of get over getting
- 5:22Speaker 1: up on stage, being in front of cameras on TV sets.
- 5:24Speaker 1: But it's like these are the lines, and this is
- 5:27Speaker 1: the performance, and your job is to really embody this
- 5:31Speaker 1: character and you know, just try to tell the truth,
- 5:33Speaker 1: try to tell a great story with you know, the
- 5:37Speaker 1: really great script that the writers have given you. But yeah,
- 5:40Speaker 1: that is like all bets are off when you know
- 5:43Speaker 1: it's like you can say anything, and I do, for
- 5:46Speaker 1: the record, believe that most of it is very authentic. Otherwise,
- 5:49Speaker 1: I mean reality TV is like a huge, you know genre,
- 5:53Speaker 1: people love it. I think people can feel when things
- 5:56Speaker 1: are inauthentic, So I don't think it would be anywhere
- 5:58Speaker 1: near as big. You know, it's still what is it like,
- 6:01Speaker 1: season twenty eight or something now eight twenty nine? Unreal? Yeah,
- 6:06Speaker 1: that actually makes me think.
- 6:06Speaker 2: I wonder what they'll do for the thirtieth anniversary because
- 6:09Speaker 2: that's only a years away.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Probably big fun. Your future ghost is ready to be
- 6:14Speaker 1: the surprise guest. Just putting that out there. I love
- 6:18Speaker 1: that in service if anybody wants a new indie band
- 6:21Speaker 1: to be the surprise guest. We're We're, We're, We're there.
- 6:24Speaker 1: And where are you guys located? I'm in La. My
- 6:28Speaker 1: bandmate is in Austin, so we've made this upcoming album
- 6:31Speaker 1: in kind of both cities. But yeah, so it's kind
- 6:35Speaker 1: of fun to have, you know, those two different places
- 6:38Speaker 1: as inspiration. But yeah, for me, it's it's mostly La.
- 6:41Speaker 1: That's so cool. Did you have any when you were
- 6:43Speaker 1: on the show.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Did it inspire anything in your music or your your songwriting?
- 6:49Speaker 1: On the TV show on The Bachelor, on One Tree Hill,
- 6:52Speaker 1: all the about.
- 6:53Speaker 2: All the above, I was thinking The Bachelor, but honestly,
- 6:55Speaker 2: I feel like One Tree Hill's so iconic that I'm like,
- 6:57Speaker 2: there has to be some kind of ins But from
- 6:59Speaker 2: that as well, well.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Oh definitely, yeah. I mean being on The Bachelor was
- 7:02Speaker 1: inspiring because I think that it was as a songwriter,
- 7:07Speaker 1: it was really cool to just witness the behind the
- 7:11Speaker 1: scenes of that type of show where there's this date,
- 7:16Speaker 1: you don't know what's going to happen, but there are
- 7:18Speaker 1: these cameras, but these are, at the end of the day,
- 7:21Speaker 1: just two people who are trying to see if they
- 7:23Speaker 1: vibe yeah, And I think there was something kind of
- 7:26Speaker 1: really charming about that and just being like, at the
- 7:31Speaker 1: end of the day, that's really what's going on. And
- 7:34Speaker 1: that's why I think people love the show so much
- 7:37Speaker 1: and all the spinoffs, because it is, at the end
- 7:41Speaker 1: of the day, just people trying to Everybody can relate
- 7:45Speaker 1: to that being on a first day, third date and
- 7:48Speaker 1: trying to navigate the awkwardness. And so as a songwriter,
- 7:52Speaker 1: it was definitely inspiring, you know, because I think that
- 7:55Speaker 1: when you write songs, you're sort of just trying to
- 7:57Speaker 1: convey the experience of being a human and how weird
- 8:00Speaker 1: it is, you know, So that was super inspiring and
- 8:02Speaker 1: say with onetreal inspiration for years, you know, I mean
- 8:07Speaker 1: tea for years. So definitely. I think when you when
- 8:11Speaker 1: you're a creative, you look for inspiration in whatever situation
- 8:14Speaker 1: you're in, which is what I know I was trying
- 8:15Speaker 1: to do that.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Yeah, speaking of you know, tea and behind the scenes,
- 8:30Speaker 2: is there anything from being on The Bachelor that shocked
- 8:33Speaker 2: you that was like a behind the scenes experience or
- 8:36Speaker 2: kind of like tea that you could spill where you're like, oh, like,
- 8:38Speaker 2: I don't think the every everyday viewer would see this
- 8:40Speaker 2: or know this about filming.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Well, I'm not sure about like anything that happened while
- 8:47Speaker 1: I was on set. But immediately following that episode, sadly,
- 8:54Speaker 1: Jason dumped the girl who he surprised with my concert,
- 8:59Speaker 1: and so there was this part to me that felt
- 9:01Speaker 1: slightly responsible. I was like, shoot, should I have played
- 9:03Speaker 1: a different song, something more romantic? Like obviously I'm joking,
- 9:07Speaker 1: but that was kind of funny in you know the
- 9:12Speaker 1: sense that my band and I loved to joke, like, man, dude,
- 9:15Speaker 1: maybe we should have, like, you know, covered a Marvin
- 9:17Speaker 1: Gaye song and I like something a little bit more.
- 9:20Speaker 1: And then hilariously enough, I posted about this like I
- 9:23Speaker 1: posted a throwback like several years later on Instagram, like
- 9:27Speaker 1: throwback to when I was on the Bachelor. Too bad.
- 9:30Speaker 1: The guy actually dumped the girl he surprised with my
- 9:33Speaker 1: performance after this, and she responded, she like, I didn't
- 9:36Speaker 1: tag her if they didn't know even you know, what
- 9:39Speaker 1: her social media was or whatever. Yeah, no, that was
- 9:42Speaker 1: around when when this came out. It was like, you know,
- 9:45Speaker 1: such an old school thing, but it was really cute,
- 9:49Speaker 1: she responded, and she was like, yeah, that was a
- 9:51Speaker 1: bizarre time, but I loved having a private show for me,
- 9:53Speaker 1: so it was really sweet. And then I later found
- 9:56Speaker 1: out she won a season of I think it was
- 9:59Speaker 1: Bachelor Pad. Oh my gosh, so like redemption for Natalie. Yeah,
- 10:03Speaker 1: we love to see totally. Yeah, so uh, not necessarily tea,
- 10:07Speaker 1: but just kind of a funny, you know, a funny
- 10:11Speaker 1: thing that it is. It's ruthless man like you just
- 10:13Speaker 1: don't I thought, Oh man, he surprised her with this concert.
- 10:16Speaker 1: He must really like her, and he was like, sorry,
- 10:19Speaker 1: not feeling it, not getting Rose.
- 10:21Speaker 2: Yeah, oh that's crazy, But I like that's a good
- 10:26Speaker 2: behind the scenes mom.
- 10:27Speaker 1: I think that's pretty cute. Yeah, it was cute.
- 10:30Speaker 2: How did performing on The Bachelor compared to your time
- 10:34Speaker 2: on One Tree Hill? Obviously cameras and obviously it's unscripted,
- 10:38Speaker 2: but did you feel like you were completely prepared going
- 10:40Speaker 2: into it? She's like, oh, I've been on set a
- 10:41Speaker 2: thousand times or was it just completely different?
- 10:44Speaker 1: It was really different in one very major way. That
- 10:48Speaker 1: was really cool. So on One Tree Hill, just by definition,
- 10:52Speaker 1: because of the way the sound works and the way
- 10:55Speaker 1: the mixing works, you don't perform most of the music
- 11:00Speaker 1: live on the show. So I performed I think eleven
- 11:03Speaker 1: of my songs over four seasons of being on One
- 11:06Speaker 1: Tree Hill, so tons of different scenes where I'm on
- 11:09Speaker 1: stage with the band, and most of them, unless it
- 11:13Speaker 1: was just me alone at a piano or me alone
- 11:15Speaker 1: with a guitar, almost all of them, you are performing
- 11:19Speaker 1: that song the same way you would if you were
- 11:21Speaker 1: filming a music video. So the track is playing, you know,
- 11:25Speaker 1: in the background, and you are singing along to it,
- 11:28Speaker 1: but essentially the audio from your voice is not what's
- 11:33Speaker 1: going to be in the final mix. Of the show, right,
- 11:37Speaker 1: So it has something to do with just the way
- 11:40Speaker 1: that they're editing it. This sound. It would be an
- 11:42Speaker 1: absolute nightmare to try to recreate a full band sound
- 11:45Speaker 1: on a TV set because it's just not you know,
- 11:47Speaker 1: creative for that. However, with The Bachelor, this was a
- 11:50Speaker 1: real stage with a real back line sound system and
- 11:54Speaker 1: we were playing live like you would on the Tonight
- 11:58Speaker 1: Show or the Today Show or whatever. And that was
- 12:01Speaker 1: really cool, also kind of terrifying, because that's you know,
- 12:05Speaker 1: it's the real thing, and I kind of loved that.
- 12:08Speaker 1: It was sort of a cool poetic moment to be like, yeah,
- 12:11Speaker 1: this is reality TV, so we should be playing this
- 12:14Speaker 1: for real. It should be you know, a one take
- 12:17Speaker 1: and that's all that's the only chance you get. And
- 12:20Speaker 1: I love that. I mean, I think both things. It
- 12:23Speaker 1: makes total sense why for most scripted TV you can't
- 12:27Speaker 1: necessarily perform a full band song live every time. But
- 12:30Speaker 1: it's really fun to do that because I do think
- 12:33Speaker 1: that as a live music lover and fan myself, you know,
- 12:38Speaker 1: as a musician, it's really fun to get a chance
- 12:40Speaker 1: to sort of give a raw, one time performance, you know,
- 12:44Speaker 1: especially for something like that. That's so cool.
- 12:46Speaker 2: I'm really curious when you auditioned for One Tree Hill.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Did you go into it knowing it was a musical role.
- 12:52Speaker 1: Did you have.
- 12:53Speaker 2: To perform acting in singing to get that role on
- 12:57Speaker 2: One Tree Hill.
- 12:59Speaker 1: It's a great question. Yes, it was supposed to be
- 13:01Speaker 1: for one episode. So I had already signed a record deal.
- 13:05Speaker 1: I was out on the road in my parents' band
- 13:09Speaker 1: that they graciously lent to me to Hoe play all
- 13:13Speaker 1: my first shows with my band, and so I was
- 13:15Speaker 1: doing the like grassroots indie musician thing and I was
- 13:19Speaker 1: coming through LA and my manager at the time was like,
- 13:22Speaker 1: there's this show, One Tree Hill. They feature a lot
- 13:24Speaker 1: of music, and there's this just this one episode thing
- 13:28Speaker 1: for this character. But if you get it, you would
- 13:31Speaker 1: be playing your song, you know. And I was like, cool,
- 13:34Speaker 1: Like let's go. So I going to get this, Yeah,
- 13:37Speaker 1: I was like, I'm you know, but so I just
- 13:39Speaker 1: went to the audition and wasn't, you know, expecting to
- 13:42Speaker 1: even get a callback. And then I got the part,
- 13:46Speaker 1: and yeah, and at the audition, I had to sing
- 13:48Speaker 1: a song and then I had to do a scene.
- 13:51Speaker 1: And you know, I had done like a couple of
- 13:54Speaker 1: theater things in high school for fun, but I never
- 13:58Speaker 1: moved to La Anticipated. Oh I'm going to be an actress,
- 14:01Speaker 1: you know, I wanted to sign a record deal. That
- 14:03Speaker 1: was my dream. So yeah, so I get the part
- 14:06Speaker 1: and then I end up being on the show for
- 14:08Speaker 1: four seasons and playing eleven of my original songs. My
- 14:13Speaker 1: character had a different name, her name was Mia, but
- 14:16Speaker 1: all the songs were Kate Vogel songs. So it was
- 14:18Speaker 1: this really incredible, unexpected opportunity that you know, really challenged
- 14:24Speaker 1: me a lot creatively because I had to learn the
- 14:28Speaker 1: you know, the technical aspects of the craft of acting.
- 14:32Speaker 1: But it was really fun because it's ultimately, you know,
- 14:36Speaker 1: like I mentioned before, it's storytelling and that's what songwriting is.
- 14:39Speaker 1: That's what getting up on stages and so it was,
- 14:42Speaker 1: uh and that's where I met my bandmate for Your
- 14:44Speaker 1: Future Ghost. So my my bandmate, Mike Grubbs, came into
- 14:48Speaker 1: the show in season seven and we became fast friends
- 14:51Speaker 1: and then years later ended up deciding to collaborate and
- 14:54Speaker 1: write music together. So it was a really unique, like
- 14:59Speaker 1: very cool opportunity that I Yeah, it's it's it's crazy
- 15:04Speaker 1: looking back, how you know, how it all came together.
- 15:06Speaker 1: That's really cool.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Do you believe in the.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Phrase like fake it till you make it?
- 15:11Speaker 2: Do you feel like that's what you had to do
- 15:13Speaker 2: with the acting portion of being on one Tree Hill
- 15:16Speaker 2: and you just had to go in and be like,
- 15:18Speaker 2: this is such a huge opportunity.
- 15:20Speaker 1: I'm not gonna let anybody know.
- 15:21Speaker 2: That I actually don't have like trained acting skills.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Did you just fake it till you make it?
- 15:27Speaker 2: Or were you really proactive about the acting side of things,
- 15:31Speaker 2: like were you getting lessons?
- 15:32Speaker 1: How did that work? That's a great question. I think
- 15:35Speaker 1: in general, yes, I think that you have to act
- 15:38Speaker 1: as if in certain situations and you have to pull
- 15:42Speaker 1: from just this idea that you ultimately wouldn't have gotten
- 15:47Speaker 1: this job or this part or whatever it is if
- 15:51Speaker 1: you didn't have the capability to do it. I think
- 15:54Speaker 1: that that's an important part of learning how to do something,
- 15:59Speaker 1: is believing that you can do it in the first place.
- 16:02Speaker 1: But I'm also I'm from Ohio. Originally I'm very like
- 16:06Speaker 1: self deprecating, and so I was not shy about saying, hey, guys,
- 16:11Speaker 1: this is new for me. If I get in your light,
- 16:15Speaker 1: you know, in a scene, please tell me. And I
- 16:18Speaker 1: was really lucky to have co stars who were extremely
- 16:22Speaker 1: supportive and helpful, so, you know, everything from Hillary Burton
- 16:27Speaker 1: helping me, you know, when maybe something in a scene
- 16:31Speaker 1: when I wasn't sure how to you know, kind of
- 16:34Speaker 1: choreograph walking to this side of the set to the
- 16:38Speaker 1: next to Sophia Bush, you know, stopping a fan from
- 16:41Speaker 1: stealing my purse when we were all out, you know.
- 16:44Speaker 1: And it was a very welcoming experience with the women
- 16:48Speaker 1: from the show, which was something that I feel like
- 16:52Speaker 1: looking back, I mean, I'm so grateful for it. But
- 16:55Speaker 1: it was also a time in you know, the media
- 16:59Speaker 1: and pop call sure when I feel like women were
- 17:02Speaker 1: being pitted against each other a lot. You know. It
- 17:04Speaker 1: was like my first episode on One Tree Hill was
- 17:07Speaker 1: with Kevin Fetterline. He was like playing the lead singer
- 17:11Speaker 1: in MIA's band. And this was right when like the
- 17:14Speaker 1: media was being horrible to Brittany and everybody was you know,
- 17:18Speaker 1: up in arms about that. So it was really a
- 17:21Speaker 1: special thing to have that camaraderie and to have that support.
- 17:25Speaker 1: So I was proactive about saying, this is a job,
- 17:29Speaker 1: this is a craft. I need to you know, really
- 17:33Speaker 1: like I need to know what I'm doing. I need
- 17:35Speaker 1: to be a pro I need to show up and
- 17:37Speaker 1: know my lines and understand how this works. But also
- 17:39Speaker 1: I had a lot of support and I am very
- 17:43Speaker 1: grateful for that. That's so cool.
- 17:45Speaker 2: And I do think looking back at that time frame
- 17:49Speaker 2: and when that show was like just poppin', it's like
- 17:53Speaker 2: it really was a time in the media where women
- 17:56Speaker 2: were pitted against each other. So that's actually really cool
- 18:00Speaker 2: that you felt that kind of like sisterhood or friendship
- 18:04Speaker 2: with those women. Yeah, and I think people respect humility,
- 18:10Speaker 2: you know. I feel like the fact that you were
- 18:12Speaker 2: coming in there and being like, Okay, I have to
- 18:14Speaker 2: pretend like I know everything and that I'm totally comfortable
- 18:17Speaker 2: with this, because I think people sometimes feel that way
- 18:19Speaker 2: and it's maybe it's too much pressure on yourself or
- 18:22Speaker 2: it can make you seem like you're not open to
- 18:25Speaker 2: direction and stuff like that. So you probably approached it
- 18:28Speaker 2: with the perfect the perfect way where you're like, hey,
- 18:31Speaker 2: I'm doing my best, putting my best foot forward, but
- 18:34Speaker 2: open to communication and just.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Like being a better cast mate. So that's pretty cool. Yeah,
- 18:40Speaker 1: that I totally agree. I think it's important to be
- 18:43Speaker 1: honest about where you're at creatively because everybody's been there,
- 18:48Speaker 1: right everybody had their first job, everybody had their first
- 18:51Speaker 1: show where they were terrified up there. You know, most
- 18:56Speaker 1: people I think who perform or do anything in front
- 18:58Speaker 1: of the camera for a living have some degree of
- 19:00Speaker 1: stage right. So it's you know, like a lot of
- 19:02Speaker 1: us are like weird introverted artists. Like getting up in
- 19:06Speaker 1: front of people and entertaining everyone is not like I
- 19:10Speaker 1: never set out to be the center of attention, but
- 19:12Speaker 1: that ends up being, you know, part of the job.
- 19:15Speaker 1: And I think, yeah, I think that a mixture of
- 19:18Speaker 1: sort of saying, hey, I'm taking this seriously and I'm
- 19:20Speaker 1: working really hard and I so appreciate your help, but
- 19:23Speaker 1: also I might need help and I'm not you know,
- 19:27Speaker 1: one hundred percent. I don't know one hundred percent what
- 19:29Speaker 1: I'm doing yet. Is that goes a long way, I think.
- 19:33Speaker 1: I mean, I do you feel like there was any
- 19:34Speaker 1: degree of that on The Bachelor? I mean it's a
- 19:37Speaker 1: different type of performance, but it's a type of that's
- 19:39Speaker 1: a skill to be able to entertain an audience and
- 19:43Speaker 1: be yourself in front of a camera on an unscripted show. Like,
- 19:46Speaker 1: did that take some getting used to it?
- 19:47Speaker 2: I had a really hard time, Uh, I struggled with it.
- 19:52Speaker 2: I was very uncomfortable, just like I wasn't. I'm not
- 19:55Speaker 2: uncomfortable to let my guard down around people or in dating.
- 19:58Speaker 2: Like I think I'm such an open book online. I'm
- 20:01Speaker 2: just totally comfortable people ask me questions about my personal life.
- 20:05Speaker 2: For the most part, I'm pretty comfortable to share my
- 20:07Speaker 2: feelings or thoughts like perspective. But something about having to
- 20:15Speaker 2: like act natural with cameras on me, it just never
- 20:19Speaker 2: felt natural. I don't think I ever got used to it.
- 20:24Speaker 2: The only time I think maybe I did get used
- 20:26Speaker 2: to it was after I was completely off the season
- 20:28Speaker 2: and I was with the guy from the show, and
- 20:31Speaker 2: we came back for like a segment on a future
- 20:33Speaker 2: show that actually never even aired, and it was the
- 20:36Speaker 2: only time that I truly forgot that the cameras were there.
- 20:40Speaker 2: And I don't know if it's because it was no
- 20:42Speaker 2: longer about me, Like we were there to talk to,
- 20:45Speaker 2: you know, other people that are being featured on the show,
- 20:47Speaker 2: so we were kind of just like secondary characters, I
- 20:50Speaker 2: guess you would say. And that was the only time
- 20:53Speaker 2: I actually felt comfortable. And maybe it's because there wasn't
- 20:57Speaker 2: pressure or like pressure to to feel anything or to
- 21:02Speaker 2: say the right thing, like you were just I was
- 21:04Speaker 2: just there, And maybe that's maybe that's a good indicator
- 21:07Speaker 2: of how it felt being on the show, because I
- 21:08Speaker 2: think there is a pressure to like you, you want
- 21:11Speaker 2: to fall in love and you want this to work
- 21:12Speaker 2: it out, and even though any one's specifically pressuring you,
- 21:15Speaker 2: you kind of feel pressure yourself. So I don't think
- 21:18Speaker 2: I really got used to it when I was a
- 21:20Speaker 2: contestant on the show. It just always felt a little
- 21:22Speaker 2: bit unnatural to me.
- 21:24Speaker 1: But that's charming to hear though, like as a you
- 21:27Speaker 1: know what I mean, Like, I think that that probably
- 21:30Speaker 1: is something that vulnerability is something that an audience can
- 21:32Speaker 1: relate to. So even though for you it's like you
- 21:35Speaker 1: wish it was a little bit more comfortable, to me,
- 21:38Speaker 1: I'm like, that's so charming because I think everybody, yeah,
- 21:40Speaker 1: and I think everybody feels that way because it's it's
- 21:42Speaker 1: awkward enough trying to find love without cameras in your face.
- 21:46Speaker 1: So I think that's part of it's weird. That's kind
- 21:49Speaker 1: of part of the appeal, is that you know, people
- 21:51Speaker 1: are just they're just being themselves and they're trying to
- 21:53Speaker 1: not think about the camera right. It's an interesting like
- 21:56Speaker 1: dichotomy there. It is so cool. It is interesting.
- 22:09Speaker 2: Okay, before I let you go, I wanted to ask
- 22:12Speaker 2: you about your new single. It's called The Only One,
- 22:16Speaker 2: Is that right? And it just came out in May.
- 22:19Speaker 2: Can you tell us about the songwriting process and what
- 22:23Speaker 2: you're excited for people to hear when they listen to it.
- 22:28Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely, I'm so excited about this song. So this
- 22:31Speaker 1: is one of our like this is the love song,
- 22:35Speaker 1: so it's kind of perfect for this conversation about the
- 22:37Speaker 1: bachelor and finding love. Like the Only One is really
- 22:41Speaker 1: about just that feeling when you find somebody and you
- 22:45Speaker 1: just get this magical sort of spark and you know,
- 22:50Speaker 1: the chorus lines are I want to sleep in your
- 22:53Speaker 1: T shirt, I want to sing through your speakers, And
- 22:55Speaker 1: it's like just that sweet feeling of like finding somebody
- 23:01Speaker 1: who just like opens up these different sort of galaxies
- 23:05Speaker 1: for you. And it was really fun to write because
- 23:09Speaker 1: you know, we have a lot of music that's just
- 23:12Speaker 1: really fun, Like our record is this these big guitars,
- 23:16Speaker 1: this indie synth pop. It's kind of like a lot
- 23:19Speaker 1: of the theme is sort of about like finding the
- 23:22Speaker 1: fun and the party and like a refuge in the
- 23:25Speaker 1: chaos of like a world that feels very post apocalyptics sometimes,
- 23:28Speaker 1: and we really wanted to just make an album that
- 23:31Speaker 1: you could like jump up and down on your bed
- 23:34Speaker 1: and sing with your friends, you know, And this song
- 23:37Speaker 1: it's still that, but it's like this is the really
- 23:40Speaker 1: kind of you know, bringing a little bit of our
- 23:42Speaker 1: emo pasted into it. This like, you know, emotional love
- 23:47Speaker 1: song just about the magic of finding that person who
- 23:51Speaker 1: you know, whether it's a first date and you're just
- 23:54Speaker 1: like majorly crushing on this person, or whether it's you know,
- 23:57Speaker 1: someone you've been with. I've been married to my husband
- 23:58Speaker 1: for almost twelve years, you know, and so it's like
- 24:01Speaker 1: that feeling kind of is something everybody can relate to,
- 24:06Speaker 1: whether it's all across the board. So it's one of
- 24:10Speaker 1: my favorite songs. It's very like galactic, like the sounds
- 24:15Speaker 1: and stuff are really sort of floaty, and it's very
- 24:20Speaker 1: singable and fun. So I'm really excited for people to
- 24:23Speaker 1: hear it. It's been really cool to hear their sponts
- 24:25Speaker 1: so far. That's so cool.
- 24:27Speaker 2: I love the way you described even the sounds in it.
- 24:29Speaker 2: I'm really I'm really happy for you guys, it sounds awesome.
- 24:33Speaker 2: Where can everyone find you and where can they listen
- 24:35Speaker 2: to your music?
- 24:37Speaker 1: Yeah? Absolutely, so they can find me on any social
- 24:40Speaker 1: media platform. I'm at Kate Vogel and your Future Ghost

- 25:01Speaker 1: of get all of that stuff worked out soon, but

- 25:31Speaker 1: like just beyond excited about it. It's so cool.
