- 0:00I'm Mary Condon, welcome back Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:03Momentarily David Kaplan from ESPN 1000.
- 0:07Of course, his YouTube channel blowing up.
- 0:09We'll get into that with Kapa sponsored by Centurion Stone of
- 0:12Iowa. If you're in the market for
- 0:14manufactured or natural stone to accent or update your exterior
- 0:18or your interior, any size project, want to do something

- 0:30color and pattern combinations of Centurion stone.
- 0:33That's their very own manufactured stone product.

- 0:42of iowa.com. Visit the showroom 5525 NE 22nd
- 0:47St. in Des Moines. Without further ado, off to
- 0:50Chicago we go. He's the cap man.
- 0:52He joins us Capper Trenton Ken, good to talk to you.
- 0:55I can only imagine what it was like to be, you know, talk show
- 0:57host in Chicago. The 1st show morning drive on
- 1:01Tuesday morning where you sit on ESPN 1000 had to be active cap.
- 1:07Yeah, when you start at 6:00 AM and you walk in and every single
- 1:13line, full rack of calls, as I like to say, everybody waiting
- 1:18to blast Caleb, to blast Ben Johnson, to blast Ryan Polls.
- 1:23Yeah, they get paid a lot of money, all of them.
- 1:26So they got to wear it. It is what it is.
- 1:29Frustrating to no end, up 17-6 after the pick six.
- 1:35There were a lot of decisions in the game.
- 1:36Ben Johnson has been described by many as one of the smartest
- 1:39minds out there. Didn't have a good debut, A
- 1:42questionable decision to challenge a guy that was clearly
- 1:46down, missing and not going with the field goal opportunity.
- 1:50There's a lot there. How How would you rate Ben
- 1:52Johnson's first performance? I thought he was a really good
- 1:56offensive coordinator and a bad head coach.
- 1:59Yeah, fair. You know, I just and I like him.
- 2:03I'm glad he's the head coach of the Bears.
- 2:06Going to take time. And I was reading the Joe Gibbs
- 2:09Hall of Famer. Joe Gibbs started, oh, I think
- 2:12in five in his career with the Washington Redskins.
- 2:16And he said he walked into Jack Kent Cook's office, his owner,
- 2:20and he said, were you going to fire me?
- 2:22This was after they had gotten the thing turned around and he
- 2:25goes, was I going to fire you? I was firing your ass and
- 2:29somebody talked me out of it. He said 100%.
- 2:32He's like, I was just getting started.
- 2:34He goes, well, I was paying you a lot of money and I didn't
- 2:37think you were doing a good job. So, you know, look, I think the
- 2:43next shoe to drop and I like Caleb, you know that.
- 2:47I think he's got a world of talent.
- 2:49But I think the next shoe to drop is that you're going to
- 2:55start to hear calls for Tyson. They couldn't.
- 2:57Agree. More They don't get this thing
- 2:58turned around pretty quickly. I'm just telling you, if this
- 3:04kid can't execute what Ben Johnson wants now, what Caleb
- 3:10Williams wants, what Ben Johnson wants, he's getting $65 million
- 3:16to be the head coach of the Chicago Bears and every cent of
- 3:20it is guaranteed. So if he can't execute like on
- 3:24the 4th and three when they went for it early in the game.
- 3:29I. Thought it was a yeah.
- 3:31I thought it was a foolish decision.
- 3:33I did. I said it before the play
- 3:37because I'm not a results oriented guy.
- 3:40I'm a process oriented guy. If you told me my quarterback
- 3:43was Matthew Stafford, OK, you can take a shot.
- 3:48Take a shot. If you told me my quarterback
- 3:50was Patrick Mahomes, Burrow, I mean, pick any of the really
- 3:56good, obviously Josh Allen, Mahomes, the top guys to pick a
- 4:02solid veteran court. My quarterback was Kirk Cousins.
- 4:06OK, you want to take a shot? He's been around a long time.
- 4:09Caleb hasn't earned that right. And it's seven to three.
- 4:13I need the points. Give me the field goal.
- 4:16Let's not be stupid here, but in Ben's defense, he schemed up a
- 4:22good play. DJ Moore is wide open and Caleb
- 4:26misses them. That can't happen.
- 4:28Nope, Nope. The scripted plays, Cap they ran
- 4:31them to the letter seemingly, but once they ran out of
- 4:34scripted plays, it started to go downhill.
- 4:36At that point for for Caleb Williams, it's just he's just
- 4:39not accurate. Cap, how does he get more
- 4:42accurate? Can that be done?
- 4:44I don't know, I don't know. He looks so frantic, frenetic in
- 4:52the pocket, he looks off and I don't know why.
- 4:57And look the throat of Roma Doonese on the sideline when he
- 5:01was running towards the right sideline.
- 5:02Elite, elite. That was just there's three or
- 5:05four people in the world that can make that throw.
- 5:07That's a fact. But when you miss DJ Moore down
- 5:12the left sideline, when you miss the 4th and three.
- 5:15And I went back and I did it again today.
- 5:18So I've been watching multiple days.
- 5:20I want to clear my head. Maybe I'm, you know, emotional
- 5:24over the loss or I'm biased about this.
- 5:27So I got up early this morning. We're on at six.
- 5:30I got up at 3:56 and I grabbed my laptop and here we go.
- 5:35Let's put my game Pass on You go back and can watch early in the
- 5:41game. He has one where he's in the
- 5:43pocket. He's going through his
- 5:45progression at the top of your screen.
- 5:48Anyone can do this. Just look.
- 5:50He's got DJ covered. Well, if he would take his next
- 5:55read, that's not there. He goes back across the field
- 5:59and looks at DJ again. There's no one within 20 yards
- 6:02of them, nobody close. He could have run all day.
- 6:06He never, ever looked at it. He checked it down and they
- 6:09picked up a couple 3-4 yards and I'm like, how did you miss that
- 6:13guy? Like that's your primary target.
- 6:15OK, he was covered. You've got to go back and look
- 6:19at make a second read there. Then he has Colston Loveland in
- 6:23motion. And if you watch the Lions play,
- 6:26usually the motion guy is going to get a really, really good
- 6:29opportunity to build up a head of steam and get a good deep
- 6:33run. And Colston Loveland is wide
- 6:36open and he never looks out. So those are the things Ben
- 6:41Johnson's not going to tolerate. Hey man, I schemed you open a 40
- 6:45yard gain there, a 25 yard gain there and you did nothing with
- 6:50it. So we'll see.
- 6:52But I'm just telling you they're going to Detroit.
- 6:55They need a win. The Lions, they got embarrassed
- 6:58by the Packers. What if they beat you and then
- 7:01you come home that Dallas games, no layup almost beat the Eagles.
- 7:05OK, what if you lose that one, you're all in three.
- 7:08The Raiders are want to know everyone's like well, we'll go
- 7:10to Vegas and win and have a good time.
- 7:13Really. You sure about that?
- 7:14You could roll into the by. Oh, and four, you could and if
- 7:19you're owing for it to buy and he that kid doesn't play well, I
- 7:23would not be stunned if Ben Johnson went screw you guys,
- 7:28Beijing, you're starting. And if that plays out, look out.
- 7:33It's going to be there's going to be a lot of ammunition out
- 7:36there, cap. Before that, though, you
- 7:38mentioned the Lions game in front of them walking wounded
- 7:42unit out there, missing your top quarterback Jaylen Johnson was
- 7:45out when your top linebackers were out the game.
- 7:47Then injuries that happened throughout the quarter, of
- 7:49course of that. Health wise, where are the Bears
- 7:51here in this early moment? And they have an early bye this
- 7:54year in Week 5, but want to get to that point at least with a
- 7:56win or two. How are they looking injury
- 7:58wise? Not great.
- 8:01I mean, your number one cornerback, Jalen Johnson, who
- 8:05is an all Pro, he's didn't play. Your number one linebacker, TJ
- 8:11Edwards, he didn't play. Your number one slot corner, top
- 8:16three at his position in the NFL, Tyler Gordon, he didn't
- 8:20play. And then maybe he's not
- 8:22starting, but he might be your best pass rusher because Montez
- 8:27Sweat looks like he belongs on a milk carton.
- 8:30Austin Booker, he's on injury reserve for at least three or
- 8:34four, I think 4 weeks. So that's four of your top,
- 8:38we'll call it top 15 defenders. That's not good, man.
- 8:42That is not good. You done with the bears threats.
- 8:46Dale. Are there questions for CAP?
- 8:49OK. Not overall.
- 8:50Well I I feel like I'm over as a fan, but I'll be still cheery
- 8:54for him. Absolutely.
- 8:55Cap before we get into the Cubs and where they're at right now,
- 8:58obviously the big Cubs story of the day, Anthony Rizzo, the face
- 9:01of that 2016 World Series winner, he's going to be
- 9:04honored. He's officially retiring and
- 9:07will be honored at Wrigley Field on Saturday.
- 9:09When you think of Anthony Rizzo, I know he got you.
- 9:12What did seemingly was never going to happen in your lifetime
- 9:15and didn't happen, sadly, in a lot of people's lifetime, an
- 9:18integral part of that World Series championship team.
- 9:21I think he's the face. How do you remember Anthony
- 9:23Rizzo? One of my favorite guys that I
- 9:27dealt with, I came to him at 20, I want to say 15.
- 9:32And I said and I, I was around there every day.
- 9:37So I did the pre and the post. So their families are watching
- 9:40me. So I became friends with Riz and
- 9:43he did all his cancer charities, his cook off for cancer.
- 9:46I was the MC every year. Every year Cap, I want you to MC
- 9:51it. I mean, we had a great
- 9:53relationship. So that's how I choose to
- 9:55remember him as what a good guy he was to deal with.
- 9:59And then I went to him in 2015. I said, how about we do a weekly
- 10:02show? We'll pay you and we'll do a
- 10:04weekly show. He's like, I don't know.
- 10:07I said, Rizz, you're with me, man.
- 10:08We can promote your charity stuff.
- 10:10And he's like, all right, I'll do it.
- 10:12And so we did. And he would get on and he
- 10:16wouldn't say a lot. And one day I'm at the ballpark.
- 10:18He's like, hey, how's the show going today?
- 10:19What do you think? I said, I thought it sucked.
- 10:22He's like, what? I said, dude, you got to say say
- 10:26something. Come on, man, You got opinions
- 10:29on everything? He's like, yeah, I don't want to
- 10:31put all those out there. I'm like, just give me
- 10:34something. So the next week I said, Riz,
- 10:37you see this article in the paper about, you know, the
- 10:40length of the season some people feel is too long.
- 10:44And he said it is too long. He said it is.
- 10:48He said, oh, yeah, the season's way too long, we should cut it
- 10:53down. I said, well, bro, if they cut
- 10:55the season down, you guys are going to get paid less.
- 10:59That mean everything's tied to how many commercial breaks in a
- 11:02game, how many games you play. He said, we make too much money
- 11:06anyway, that no problem, they should cut it down.
- 11:10He hung up with me and we tweeted out his quote.
- 11:14It was the front page of the USA TODAY the next morning and he
- 11:19said the head of the union called him.
- 11:21Have you lost your blanket mind? What are you doing?
- 11:25We're trying to get a collective bargaining agreement done and
- 11:28you're saying we make too much money?
- 11:30Are you crazy? Sees me at the ballpark that
- 11:33next night sees me. He's like, hey, don't you ever
- 11:37tell me to say something controversial again.
- 11:39I'm getting destroyed. By.
- 11:41Players by media, everybody's killing me and the union's mad.
- 11:45So that's probably the funny story that I remember.
- 11:49Anthony Rizzo, the face to you of the 2016 Cubs World Series
- 11:53team. 100 percent, 100% it's not Chris Bryant.
- 11:58Chris was a hell of a player and a great person, but he was a
- 12:03quiet, you know, player. He played Anthony Rizzo.
- 12:07Man, what that dude gave to our community.
- 12:09He's a cancer survivor, and then he gave back by going to Lurie
- 12:15Children's Hospital on a regular basis.
- 12:18The money he raised and the donations and things that he
- 12:22helped either bring to them or do himself.
- 12:27Yeah, that dude's the face of our 2016 team is.
- 12:30There a place for him in management cap.
- 12:36I'm not saying it's a skipper, but you know, front office type
- 12:40ambassador. I mean, maybe they maybe they
- 12:42can use them in some type of a consultant role.
- 12:46I don't think he wants to work that hard.
- 12:48I don't. He made a ton of money.
- 12:50That's A&B. If you're Rizzo, you're living
- 12:54in Florida. You got a great life down there.
- 12:57That's his where he's from. He loves Florida.
- 13:01Who wouldn't? I'd move to Florida if I could
- 13:03do it. I can't.
- 13:05But no, I don't. I don't see him doing that, at
- 13:08least not now. He just, he has like a four
- 13:10month old. I don't see him getting that
- 13:12involved. I see him, you know, getting a
- 13:15place in Chicago, like a condo, flying in here as his
- 13:18ambassador, do a little broadcasting and go home to
- 13:22Emily and the kids. Maybe he's put on a uniform of
- 13:24spring training for a couple of weeks, you know, right?
- 13:27Yeah, in spring training, yeah. Shake some hands, hit some pot,
- 13:30flies to some guys out there. Cop Tucker to the here and now.
- 13:35Placed on the 10 one day injured list with the left calf strain.
- 13:39This is back to September 2nd. Hasn't played since then.
- 13:43Ken come off the injured list on the 16th.
- 13:46So just six days away from that calf.
- 13:48Just a weird situation. Fill us in and where you are
- 13:50with Cal Tucker. Yeah, I was talking with
- 13:54somebody today just about him and you know, what are we
- 13:59getting from Kyle Tucker? You know, everyone says it was
- 14:03his hand was broken and that's why he was struggling.
- 14:05Well, he injured the hand on the 2nd of June, I believe is the
- 14:10date. Go look at his numbers for the
- 14:12month of June. If you do like just put in Kyle
- 14:15Tucker splits and then ESPN will break down by month, last seven
- 14:19days, 1530, whatever. Go look at his June numbers.
- 14:23They're outstanding. So why all of a sudden, when
- 14:27July hit, that dude looked literally inept at the plate.
- 14:32He was horrible. Why?
- 14:34I don't know. But if I was the president of
- 14:38the Cubs, Jed Hoyer, and I had to make a decision in the
- 14:42offseason and it was 10 years, $400 million or some, you know,
- 14:49absurd amount, I'm not sure I would give that to him.
- 14:52Would I do a three-year deal with opt outs and pay him really
- 14:57well, 40 whatever million a year?
- 14:59Sure, yeah, I'd roll the dice because he's 29 turning 30 and
- 15:04he's a really good player. Really good.
- 15:07But what? I guarantee that guy based on
- 15:09what I've seen this year. 40 million a year for 10 years?
- 15:14No, I would not. Since July 19th, PCA, he's had
- 15:18hit two home runs. He was 26.
- 15:20Now he's got 28. But his defense is outstanding,
- 15:23gets on base, he's going to steal the bag for you.
- 15:25So you cut him some slack. But say Suzuki, on that same
- 15:28day, he was a 26 home runs. He's all the way up now to 27.
- 15:33It's just remarkable Cap the the collapse, the power shortage
- 15:37that Suzuki is continuing to experience.
- 15:40And this isn't like, you know, one or two weeks.
- 15:42This is about six or seven weeks.
- 15:45What's going on with Suzuki Cap? I mean, he looks healthy.
- 15:49He does. I don't know what is going on
- 15:53with Saya. I don't.
- 15:55He looks healthy. He runs well, he swings hard.
- 16:00He's muscled up. Why all of a sudden he is inept
- 16:06in the power department, I don't know.
- 16:08I can't figure it out. People keep going.
- 16:12Can they turn this back on in the playoffs?
- 16:14It's not like a faucet. You don't just turn it back on.
- 16:17Why he looks so bad? Why that team?
- 16:21You know, they face Bryce Elder twice in the last six days.
- 16:25That dude looks like he's, you know, Tarik Schuble against
- 16:29them. He's got an ERA on near 5.
- 16:32I can't figure them out. Offensively I can't.
- 16:35All right, Cap, we go to game three of the wild card round
- 16:41against the Padres and it's set up 7th, 8th, 9th inning.
- 16:48What's the bullpen look like? Everybody is eligible to pitch.
- 16:51There's no pitch limit, anything like that.
- 16:52You got it set up. Cubs are clinging to A43 lead as
- 16:56we go to the bullpen. Everybody available, set it up.
- 16:59How does this look that no one lefty righty match?
- 17:01789. 789 OK. Wow.
- 17:05And we have the lead. Up.
- 17:06A run up a run. Up a run, 7th, 8th night,
- 17:12depending on who's batting for the project.
- 17:14Let's assume that they have lefties coming up in the 7th.
- 17:19So I will have Caleb Theobar ready to go in the 7th and then
- 17:25in the eighth. Wow, because I'm closing with
- 17:30Keller. Not a boy, I like it.
- 17:33I'm closing with Brad Keller. Daniel, for whatever reason, he
- 17:38just doesn't look right to me. He's on the injured list, but I
- 17:41was told today it's more of a reset and it's not like a
- 17:44serious structural injury. So if that's the case and he
- 17:48needs a reset and I'm 3 1/2 weeks from playing post season
- 17:53baseball and my guy needs a reset, how's he going to be when
- 17:57there's 42,000 maniacs at Wrigley and I'm clinging to A43
- 18:03lead in the 7th? I know they can go to Mason
- 18:06Miller. I know they can go to Robert
- 18:08Suarez. I don't have those guys.
- 18:11I do have Keller and so I'm closing with Keller.
- 18:17Could I use Palencia for a tough right-hander?
- 18:20But I don't think I'm starting the 8th inning with him.
- 18:23I don't know how much I trust him right now.
- 18:25You mentioned the lefty I. Guess I don't know.
- 18:28That's my problem with what the Cubs did at the deadline.
- 18:32You know, and I keep hearing from people, someone over there
- 18:34today called me and said, dude, do you know what the prices were
- 18:37for? Not in terms of cash, in terms
- 18:39of player capital like I was told by somebody who I know who
- 18:44works for the Nationals. And it lined up with what I was
- 18:46told by the Cubs. They wanted Mackenzie Gore
- 18:49desperately. He's a really good pitcher.
- 18:51You should want it. Well, the price was Matt Shaw,
- 18:55Kate Horton, Ash and Wiggins or Owen Katie are.
- 18:59They nuts. Yes.
- 19:00I wouldn't do that either. I understand.
- 19:02That's why no starting pitchers moved.
- 19:05That's why. OK, I'm cool with that.
- 19:08But you're telling me Griffin Jack should be pitching for the
- 19:11Tampa Bay Rays? And you're telling me Ryan
- 19:14Helsley and the three guys the Yankees got and a Joanne Duran,
- 19:20like all Mason Miller, like all these guys got moved.
- 19:23And once again, Chicago plays second fiddle and we get Andrew.
- 19:28Kitchen who I like, Cap I like. Kittridge I like.
- 19:31Kittridge. He's fine.
- 19:32Do you want Andrew Kittridge facing Fernando Tatis with A1
- 19:36run lead? I don't.
- 19:39Over Palencia right now, maybe. Well, yeah, because that's,
- 19:43that's the options I'm giving you.
- 19:45I'm bringing you to my ice cream stand and down the street they
- 19:48got 31 flavors and I, I you've got vanilla and chocolate.
- 19:51What do you want? Yeah, Fairpoint.
- 19:55Porter Hodge, can he get back in the mix?
- 19:56I I can't quit Porter Hodge. I don't know why.
- 20:00He can't get in the mix for high leverage playoff baseball.
- 20:04No, not, Not now, Absolutely not would.
- 20:08You. I just can't quit him.
- 20:10There's something about him. I think it's there still.
- 20:12They just need to untap it. Yeah, he might be a guy
- 20:15somebody's pitch counts up there.
- 20:17You need an out in the 5th inning.
- 20:18That's more Porter Hodge, I think.
- 20:19Yeah. Cap, you've been generous for
- 20:21your time, brother. We, we don't want to continue to
- 20:24keep you here. We're going on 25 minutes.
- 20:27Thank you for doing. Well, you're my guys.
- 20:29Whatever you need, I'm always. Here.
- 20:30Thanks, buddy. We'll talk to you.
- 20:31We'll talk to you next week. See you Kapper.
- 20:33You got it. Yeah, Talk to you.
- 20:34David Kaplan, We talked Chicago Sports, ESPN 1000 and his
- 20:40YouTube channel. He's got really good recaps.
- 20:43I meant to rib him a little bit, but he's probably not ribbing
- 20:45him. He's got, I don't know, a dozen
- 20:47sponsors. It's a.
- 20:48Good thing. It's a good.
- 20:49Thing I'm working on it. It's sponsored by and does
- 20:52another 30 seconds. This segment sponsored by and
- 20:54the player of the game sponsored by.
- 20:56Anyways, looks like an outfield fence in minor League Baseball.
- 20:59That bullpen does not exactly remind you of the Royals with
- 21:03Herrera, Davis and Holland, does it?
- 21:05That was that was a 789, wasn't it?
- 21:07My God, that was automatic. Just get me 6.
- 21:10I'll get you. So when it went bad for Palencia
- 21:13and Palencia was so good when he first got it and seemingly the
- 21:16All Star break maybe. About, yeah.
- 21:18You can draw a deep line of demarcation there, but it hasn't
- 21:21been good since. I think it's got to be Brad
- 21:23Keller. I think it's Keller.
- 21:25I like Kittridge. I like Kittridge.
- 21:28He's fine. He's.
- 21:29OK, he's better than fine. A small sample size with the
- 21:34cups. He's fine, yes.
- 21:36Need a little look, a little bit more than the, what, 10
- 21:39appearances he's made in a cup? Yeah, probably.
- 21:41That's probably about right. All right, 1:25, we'll take our
- 21:44break. Trench plays of the day are
- 21:45still to come. Who's pitching?
- 21:48Oh, Jameson Tylon for the Cubs tonight, and he's going against
- 21:51Chris Sale. Pretty, pretty good.
- 21:54Tuesdays and Wednesdays are for baseball.
- 21:55God, I enjoyed the hell out of it last night.
- 21:57I really did finished up watching the the Cardinals their
- 22:01series. We'll do that again tonight, but
- 22:03we'll take a time out, come back, Trent and I will kick some
- 22:06stuff. Around we got Pete Futek.
- 22:08Oh, we do. I didn't realize that.
- 22:09Pete Futek is next. Miller and Condon, the Iowa
- 22:12Sports Radio Network. Hi, Miller and Condon, welcome
- 22:14back. Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 22:16Trent Condon, Ken Miller with you till the top of the hour.
- 22:19Coming up at that time off the bench, Sean Roberts, Lucas
- 22:23Strain, Pete futekcollegefootballnews.com.
- 22:26Pete, thanks for giving us a few minutes here.
- 22:28Always appreciate your time. Let's let me ask you this right
- 22:32out of this shoot here. What team did you would you
- 22:35maybe like to have a do over on for?
- 22:38I miss Clemson. I thought they were going to be
- 22:39really good. I'm not sure they are.
- 22:41Do you have a team like that, Pete?
- 22:44Wow. OK, they Clemson, actually I
- 22:47actually they are who I thought they were.
- 22:48I mean, everyone loved them because they knew who Kate.
- 22:50Klobnick was exactly Yep. And they had all the returning
- 22:53talent. But it's not like I I couldn't
- 22:55convince anybody this offseason that the offseason this team is
- 23:00not the Trevor Lawrence, you know, teams of past years, they
- 23:04don't have the defensive tackle. It's just not as good as those
- 23:09national championship teams where they still might be.
- 23:11I mean, they still could be in the mix here for, you know, the,
- 23:14you know, with the ACC title and everything else.
- 23:17I am. I don't want to South Florida
- 23:19because I thought they'd be good.
- 23:20I didn't think they'd beat Florida, but OK.
- 23:23I guess Florida State at the moment until proven otherwise
- 23:27after what they did to Alabama. And but yeah, I think so far
- 23:32it's been a little, you know, it's been kind of these teams
- 23:36are who we thought they've been. They would be, but it's just
- 23:40there has, there's so many teams kind of jumbled up at the top
- 23:43that I'm not quite certain that Ohio State should be all and all
- 23:47#1 And so there's still 5 or 6 teams that are still right in
- 23:50the mix for big things. We still will get a look at
- 23:53Notre Dame for just the second time this year, and then after
- 23:55that, that schedule eases up in a big time way outside of the
- 23:59matchup against maybe USC, perhaps Pit on the road in
- 24:02November. Not a whole lot of intrigue with
- 24:05them if the Irish don't get it done here though.
- 24:08How concerned should Irish fans be at O and Two, even with 10
- 24:12very winnable games after it, about being a playoff team?
- 24:15Massive, unless it's a really, really close game and depending
- 24:20on what Miami and Texas A&M do from there, because if Miami
- 24:23wins the ACC title, that was actually a pretty good loss.
- 24:27I mean, it was on the road. It was, you know, the tough
- 24:30atmosphere. It's Week 1.
- 24:32And if Miami's really that good, they they look to park, but they
- 24:37need to win this. I just they're better than Texas
- 24:40A&M. And if they can just they've had
- 24:42the two weeks off. And if you know, they give the
- 24:45ball to Love more early on, which everyone dogged in Notre
- 24:49Dame for the running game and not giving the ball to the best
- 24:51player on the field besides Carson Beck and that.
- 24:55But like the plan just didn't work.
- 24:57The idea and everyone forgets that he only got yet hurt, but
- 25:00he only got like 14 carries in last year's game against Texas
- 25:03A&M. They don't overuse Jeremiah
- 25:05Love. They kind of put they kind of
- 25:07save him as the closer at the end.
- 25:10And the problem with the Miami game is didn't have that chance
- 25:12because they got behind. So then was too late.
- 25:16They tried to give him to get in the passing game.
- 25:17So I think you're going to see Love in the running game early
- 25:20on. I do think this is going to be
- 25:22the Notre Dame team that we thought it was going to be that
- 25:24good. I I think they take care of
- 25:26Texas. Yeah, I'm with you on that one.
- 25:28Numbers just under I think a touchdown last time last last I
- 25:31look, Pete, yesterday one of your columns going around
- 25:34college football, you mentioned Big 12 expansion and should we
- 25:37get to that point and seemingly we will at some point and you
- 25:40think the two candidates that should be looked at South
- 25:44Florida off to a terrific start and that that gives somebody,
- 25:48you know, some company to those Florida, Florida competition,
- 25:51UCF, etcetera, bring in West Virginia, the mix, et cetera.
- 25:54I like that. And you and LV for a number of
- 25:57reasons and I couldn't agree with you more on that one.
- 26:01What's the likelihood that those are toward the top of the list,
- 26:04should the Big 12 be looking to expand?
- 26:07At the very least, UNLV is there.
- 26:08UNLV has not. Why didn't go to the PAC 12?
- 26:10Because it's holding out for the Big 12.
- 26:12And I throw San Diego State in the mix, too.
- 26:15And remember, it's not just about on field play.
- 26:19It just makes the optics look better.
- 26:21Like at this point, if you've got a USF team that, you know,
- 26:24that blows up Boise State and then beats Florida, well then,
- 26:28OK, yeah, that looks like a program that could happen.
- 26:30But it's a monster school. I mean, it's a lot of commuters,
- 26:33but huge enrollment. It's in Tampa, big city, big TV
- 26:38market, eventually recruiting area for Florida, again, like
- 26:42you said, matches up just fine with UCF.
- 26:45It's just a natural fit. Everyone wants Las Vegas and you
- 26:49know, everyone wants their media days there, their championship
- 26:51games there. It's now become kind of a hub
- 26:53for college sports. It's what the PAC 12 was going
- 26:55to use for. It's, you know, basically what
- 26:58the SEC As for Atlanta when before it all blew up.
- 27:02So that's just a program that just that makes a lot of sense.
- 27:05There's not a huge base of UNLV fans there when it comes to
- 27:10football. But that's not the point.
- 27:12You have that there because Big 10, Big 12 fans will certainly
- 27:15want to travel to Vegas for the UNLV game.
- 27:19Big match up on The CW. You mentioned South Florida
- 27:23earlier. I don't think The CW thought
- 27:24they were going to get something like this.
- 27:26I'll be honest that, you know, flip over last year, I think
- 27:29they've done a good job for this kind of new four way into things
- 27:32and these ACC games. They've done a good job, but
- 27:34didn't think they were probably going to get a rank match up
- 27:36when they got this one with South Florida.
- 27:39What the Bulls have done here these first two weeks.
- 27:42Oh, I it's a tough one. It's awful.
- 27:45They just they're not used. I'm the complete opposite.
- 27:49It's not like they are used to doing game and you can kind of
- 27:54tell it's a very cookie cutter. They didn't really know their
- 27:57stuff for Washington State, San Diego State.
- 28:01It just it's I, I don't know it, it feels a little, you know, JV
- 28:06to me, but. Maybe it's watching games on
- 28:08Jefferson Pilot and Raycon back in the day.
- 28:09I'm OK with it. Yeah, you know, the big time
- 28:13announcers and stuff that was all right with that.
- 28:15But yeah, they get one that people are going to pay
- 28:17attention to because look, if South Florida pulls this off, or
- 28:21at least they're close, they're they're right.
- 28:23They're probably going to be that 12th playoff team coming
- 28:26from, you know, let's give them a cookie Group of five thing.
- 28:30So, yeah, so this is a real test for Miami.
- 28:33They're certainly done on alert here because this is not just a
- 28:38layup game. And South Florida's got, they've
- 28:40got guys, they've got a system, they got a quarterback, they got
- 28:42a coach. And it's a, it's a, it should be
- 28:45one of the more fun games of the weekend.
- 28:47Oregon, what did they show you when they're dismantling over
- 28:50Oklahoma State? Are they?
- 28:51Are they back to where they were?
- 28:54Yeah, they're still great. I mean that there might be my
- 28:57redo question. I thought Oklahoma State would
- 28:58bounce back and be, you know, they're only a year removed from
- 29:01being 10 win A10 win team and right in the mix for, you know,
- 29:06Big 12 championships and everything.
- 29:08And last year it was really more about injuries.
- 29:10I mean, they, they had suffered a slew of of close losses.
- 29:15They were they had a bunch of 1 score defeats until late and
- 29:18then they couldn't get their quarterback situation right and
- 29:21just everyone got hurt on the offensive line.
- 29:23So it's like, OK, this is easily fixable.
- 29:25I actually was stupid enough to think that that was a not only
- 29:29would Oklahoma State be what easy cover, but that's, that was
- 29:32like a real pie in the sky, you know, money line thought.
- 29:35And that got ended in about two drives.
- 29:38So Oregon looked explosive. It looks great and let's see
- 29:41what they got going forward. But yeah, they look fantastic so
- 29:44far. It is a brutal slate overall in
- 29:47the Big 10, but there is a big, I love it.
- 29:50I'm intrigued. USC, who has looked incredible
- 29:53offensively against Purdue, Barry Odom, well, he's a grown
- 29:56up, right? And that's what they needed to
- 29:58maybe rebuild that Purdue ship of what they having there.
- 30:02Am I crazy to think that not Purdue's going to win this game,
- 30:05but slow track, maybe have that grass a little bit higher
- 30:08against those fast USC receivers and hey, middle of the third
- 30:11quarter, we got a ball game. Am I crazy?
- 30:13No, you're not crazy. It's they'll they'll be a little
- 30:15better. And again, that's another
- 30:16program that everyone forgets. It wasn't all that terribly long
- 30:20ago that Purdue is playing for the Big 10 Championship.
- 30:23And there it's not the the era of Jeff Rahm anymore.
- 30:27And obviously they've gone in the tank before you're rising
- 30:29back up, but they're at least competent now.
- 30:32I'm really interested in the USC because they, they didn't play
- 30:36anybody great to start the season, certainly.
- 30:39But they played some teams that can, you know, Missouri State,
- 30:41blah, blah, blah. Yeah, but they, they've got a
- 30:43big 10 bomber who's there who can throw.
- 30:45And their pass rush has been great in the first two games.
- 30:49And their offense has been razor sharp and explosive.
- 30:52I don't know if this means that they've got it now, but it's a
- 30:55it just looked the part like they're supposed to over 2
- 30:58games. I do think USC wins and they
- 31:01pull away later, but I don't think it's going to be some, you
- 31:04know, total blowout. And if it is, then I think
- 31:07that's more about USC than it is about Purdue.
- 31:10My last thing for you who's the best team in the Big 12?
- 31:14And it's look, I would say it's great that it also helps that
- 31:19Turk parents decided to play that game to lose, which just if
- 31:24the Iowa fans, I know we're just just through the floor.
- 31:27It's like, yes, what are you doing?
- 31:29You know, why try try to win again?
- 31:32The anti Dan Campbell thing happening there and they gave it
- 31:35to Iowa State. That was just great.
- 31:38They really are good. They look at their schedule.
- 31:41That is a potential College Football Playoff that's a 10 and
- 31:452:00-ish, you know, at worst maybe 11 and one possible.
- 31:49But Utah's absolutely for real. They Devin Dampier is fantastic.
- 31:54He is a as long as he's not throwing interceptions, which he
- 31:57did at New Mexico, mainly because they had to keep trying
- 31:59to come back. He's one of the most dynamic
- 32:02playmakers in the country. And that's the team that last
- 32:04year went in the tank because they couldn't get their
- 32:06quarterback situation right again.
- 32:08Now they got one, but their lines are terrific.
- 32:11I am. I'm all in thinking that Utah is
- 32:14kind of what the team we thought they'd be last year.
- 32:16Collegefootballnews.com. collegefootballnews.com for Pete
- 32:20Futech. Pete, thank you.
- 32:22Yep. Good to talk to you, Pete.
- 32:23futechcollegefootballnews.com. All right, Trans plays of the
- 32:27Day or next. Circus Sports sponsors those
- 32:29Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 32:31I'm Millery Condon. Welcome back Iowa Sports Radio
- 32:34Network. Our final segment here on a
- 32:37Wednesday coming up at the top of the hour off the bench.
- 32:40We'll be here Sean Roberts, Lucas Strain, of course every
- 32:43day starts at 6:00 AM radio wise with the first quarter, Alec
- 32:48Bussey, Heather Burnside have that three hour block every
- 32:52morning from six until 9. Trent's plays of the day are
- 32:56coming up. How did you do yesterday by the?
- 32:58Way we had a good day. We went four and one return of
- 33:023.1. Loss was the Cardinals.
- 33:04Was the Cardinals. Who jumped out to A2?
- 33:06Nothing. Lead.
- 33:07Yeah, and. I thought maybe we were going to
- 33:09cruise to a perfecto, but we'll take those.
- 33:11He sacked up some foreign ones. That'll be good.
- 33:13Over the last week we are up. That's 30 days, not so much, but
- 33:17that's OK. We're looking at the.
- 33:19Brain. Let's look at the green and
- 33:21let's see if we could get a little bit more green today. 3
- 33:24plays in baseball. In fact, two of them start here
- 33:27just in a little bit less than an hour away from first pitch in
- 33:31San Fran as the Giants welcome in Arizona to complete that.
- 33:36And I'm going to go right back to the well again.
- 33:38Give me the Giants see more on the bump for them -118 with Sam
- 33:43Fran. We will do the same this
- 33:45afternoon with the on the West Coast game, Taj Bradley.
- 33:49We know Mike Palm's thoughts on Taj Bradley, let's just very
- 33:52simply fade him. We will grab Urrena and the
- 33:55Angels this afternoon. Lay the price -115 in that one
- 33:59and then one more tonight. You know you can be very
- 34:02profitable just betting against Paul Skeens.
- 34:04No. We're going to try it again.
- 34:06Give me the Baltimore Orioles playing better plus 132 at home
- 34:11against Skeens in the Pirates. I'm surprised they haven't shut
- 34:15him down. I'm there with you.
- 34:17What? What are they doing?
- 34:18Are we getting close? Has to be Yeah, I I would, I
- 34:20would be stunned if he's still final week of the season, if
- 34:23he's still towing the rubber. I really would.
- 34:25What are you trying to do? You're out of it.
- 34:26It's. Not going to help, right?
- 34:28This is a massive asset. He's throwing 133 innings.
- 34:31I thought it'd be higher than that until I clicked on that so
- 34:34well. I thought it.
- 34:35Was keep him under 150? Yep.
- 34:36Yep, I thought it was. I thought it would be as well,
- 34:39so I asked Dame Mazzutani this. I'll ask you Twins fan is is
- 34:44Rocco Baldelli in his final weeks as the manager?
- 34:47Look, this team has collapsed 4 out of his five seasons as a
- 34:49manager, right? I mean.
- 34:51You can't keep going over and over and over again.
- 34:55I know we say it's OK to do when I was city because he's built up
- 34:58some skin. Yes, absolutely.
- 35:00But Baldelli, they need a new voice, don't they?
- 35:05It's not going to matter. But yeah, you can't bring back a
- 35:09guy that teams have fallen apart year after year after year.
- 35:13You just can't do it. So I think it's a pretty simple
- 35:15equation for him. But yeah, you got to have to
- 35:18move on, bring in the next scapegoat and the front office
- 35:22will continue the ownership, most importantly, won't do
- 35:25anything, won't spend anything, and it'll be a disappointing
- 35:29season of baseball coming up in Minnesota because.
- 35:31Look at I, I don't think the Tigers are built for, well,
- 35:33maybe they are. I mean, Scooble, scooble, right?
- 35:36But the other teams in that Division, I, I think the Royals
- 35:39one of these years are going to live up to what we think they're
- 35:41going to. Do their playoff team last?
- 35:42Year they were. They were Cleveland seemingly.
- 35:48He's going to be an 8082807983 win team and the White Sox are
- 35:53the White Sox that I think their arrow is pointing up.
- 35:56But it's going to be another 2-3.
- 35:57Years, couple a year, yeah, the build, the rebuild is not there.
- 36:00No. But I think I think they need
- 36:02some some new blood in the dugout.
- 36:04And Rocco Bell Deli and Fortune would probably be the
- 36:07skateboard. As you said, he's got plenty of
- 36:09opportunities, right? Twins win out.
- 36:11They'll finish 500, just 17 straight.
- 36:14Win out. 17 straight, get them back to 80.
- 36:18One, do you remember what their win total was?
- 36:20It had to be 80 something. 83 1/2 I was.
- 36:22Going to say low 80s. Yeah, 82 1/2 something right in
- 36:25that range. And they, they, they, they're
- 36:28already, they're already mathematically eliminated,
- 36:30right? Yeah.
- 36:31That's bananas. The Twinkies.
- 36:34They collapsed this time last year.
- 36:35Maybe they'll go on a run. I hope not play for a draft
- 36:39pick. You know, at this point, that's
- 36:40all you're playing for. All right, good stuff.
- 36:42What do we got? Coming up tomorrow, we're going
- 36:44to talk to Dave Sinekin. Boy, this Thursday night game.
- 36:47What a way to start Thursday Night Football on Amazon.
- 36:49I know we had a game last week that was pretty good as well,
- 36:52but Al Michaels and Herb St. and Kaylee Hartung and the crew.
- 36:58You know, I tell you, every year, week two of the NFL is
- 37:00always my favorite week to bet because of the overreaction.
- 37:04Have you seen much this week? I don't feel like there's that
- 37:06much overreaction in the market that I can get behind.
- 37:10What's the second if if we, and I think we do agree, the Eagles
- 37:14and the Chiefs the biggest game of the week.
- 37:16Oh, absolutely. What's the second biggest?
- 37:18Taking Thursday away. Taking Thursday.
- 37:20Away. Of Sunday.
- 37:22Is it? Is it bears lions?
- 37:24Well, it's important just because of the O2 hole.
- 37:26Whoever loses is going to be digging themselves out of.
- 37:29Yeah, I think he can definitely make a compelling case for that
- 37:32one. Yeah, looking through the rest
- 37:34of the at least the Sunday slate, I think that's the one.
- 37:37Well, how do you feel about the Vikings on Sunday night?
- 37:41Too many points. I'm with you.
- 37:45Atlanta showed improvement. Let that one slip away.
- 37:49I like pecs. Cashman and Van Ginkel, I think,
- 37:52are both out for the for the Vikings.
- 37:54Harrison Smith going to be back. I know I don't think he is.
- 37:57We'll see. We'll talk more about that
- 37:58tomorrow. We'll do some NFL.
- 38:00Tomorrow, Drake. London's banged up though,
- 38:02that's he's been great. All right, Melanie Connor,
- 38:03thanks for being with us off the bench.
- 38:05Coming up next, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
