- 0:23Now let's get into today's topic.
- 0:28Aloha, Mike, thank you so much for the opportunity to provide
- 0:33input to the Gill 1918 Podcast series for Coaches by coaches.
- 0:41I'm honored at the opportunity being here in Hawaii.
- 0:46Hello, Hawaii, to be exact. Bit about me, I'm coach Mike
- 0:50Harvey. I coach Marinol High School,
- 0:55which is a small private school here in Honolulu, and I coach in
- 1:00the head coach, director, the president, the janitor, the
- 1:06everything and all between for Spartan Track Club Hawaii here
- 1:11in Honolulu, the most competitive track and field
- 1:14club, youth club in the state. So I'm very proud of that.
- 1:21I think my subject would be certainly on coaches, coaches
- 1:29meat management, track and field management, Meat management
- 1:32being as I'm both the head coach of track and field for track
- 1:37Marinol, but also for Spartan Track Club Hawaii, we host our
- 1:41own meets. So with that there's there's
- 1:46more that goes into it than just getting the athletes ready.
- 1:50From the standpoint of training, there is meet entries, that's
- 1:551-2, There's all of the antics that are associated with heating
- 2:01and seating and assignments, lane assignments and such.
- 2:06And for the most part you got to let the software do that.
- 2:09But in terms of just understanding that process and
- 2:13being knowledgeable of those those tools, I am pretty well
- 2:19versed here in the state of Hawaii.
- 2:20In fact, I've implemented and introduced to the ILH with a
- 2:25private school sector of the schools here in Hawaii, ours
- 2:30particular on Oahu, the leveraging the athletic.net run
- 2:35meet software, which is in my opinion, so easy to use, very
- 2:42intuitive if you have a little bit of knowledge of track and
- 2:46field and and if you don't, you can gain a lot of knowledge
- 2:51using and leveraging that that software.
- 2:53So we use run meet to do our meets.
- 2:57We use Eagle eye timing system, which if coaches are looking to
- 3:02you know, you got invest in these, you know, these massive
- 3:07links cameras and and software. Run meet is a very economical
- 3:12and of easy to use way of hosting and performing high
- 3:20performance meets. It's FAT certified, it's
- 3:24integrated with athletic.net. And if you all go back and look
- 3:28at some of our history and Spartan track Club Hawaii and
- 3:31also USATF from this past season, we hosted all our meets
- 3:35using Eagle Eye camera system along with run meet through the
- 3:39results of athletic.net. So I highly recommend coaches to
- 3:45become educated in terms of meat management and don't just turn
- 3:50it over to the costly agreements to timing systems, excuse me,
- 4:01timing companies. They the as I mentioned, the
- 4:06meat management software allows you to do several of the things
- 4:10to host big meets and as a coach it it, it is highly recommended
- 4:17for me to understand that that part.
- 4:21So what what we do for Spartan Track Club, why we are blessed,
- 4:29extremely blessed with our relationship that we have with
- 4:32the one of the local high schools here in Honolulu,
- 4:38McKinley High School and the AD Bob Morricone.
- 4:42I'm telling you, there's no bigger fan in my opinion, to
- 4:45sport and particularly youth sports, youth athletics and
- 4:49particularly even more so to youth track and field.
- 4:52And Bob Morricone, he has been a supporter of ours since we began
- 4:59working with him in 2020-2021, 2022, just after COVID.
- 5:05And he supports us in more ways than you know, we're so grateful
- 5:11for him. So we, we try to host meets
- 5:16throughout the year, right? Hawaii is one of the, the, you
- 5:20know, the most wonderful climates in the, the world.
- 5:25So we can host meets year round. So often times I'll hold a meet,
- 5:29you know, in October, November and December.
- 5:35And, and for those that are listening, if you're interested
- 5:37in we host, this will be our fifth year, I believe 4th year,
- 5:41fourth year going in our fourth year of.
- 5:44We host what we call the last meet on earth and it's a track
- 5:49and field meet that is hosted December 31st of each year.
- 5:55Doesn't matter the day, December 31st, New Year's Eve, if that's
- 5:58a Sunday or Saturday or Monday or Tuesday, doesn't matter.
- 6:00We hosted on that day. And it's an opportunity to get
- 6:05the last bit of results into athletic.net.
- 6:08So it's kind of a novelty thing, but it's a, it's a very fun
- 6:12meet. We, we usually rank all of our
- 6:17athletes into one division called open and we see everybody
- 6:22by by time or by performance. So if you're an 8 year old and
- 6:26you're fast enough to run against an 18 year old, then
- 6:29bring the smoke. If you're a 18 year old and
- 6:32you're not fast enough to run against the 18 year olds, then
- 6:35you know your, your time will tell your, your, your seat.
- 6:39So I, I enjoy hosting meets. I, I, I am it, it, it gives me
- 6:49peace. It gives me a sense of, of
- 6:53accomplishment. I think as, as coaches, we are
- 6:56looking at where you know, the, the input input, or rather the,
- 7:02the effect that we have on our athletes.
- 7:04And, and just for me, being able to do that here in Hawaii and
- 7:08have folks from the mainland and even neighbor neighbor island
- 7:12come over and participate in these meets.
- 7:15It's, it's, it's, it's everything for me.
- 7:18And, and not only just, you know, everything for me from the
- 7:20outside athletes. I mean, my, my daughter, who is
- 7:23a Senior High School Marinol, she's one of the top track and
- 7:28field athletes and has been the last four years of her her
- 7:34competition and she is headed to the University of Portland for
- 7:40track and field. So what a, what a tremendous
- 7:46blessing that she's achieved that.
- 7:49And I'm so looking forward to helping support that program in
- 7:55any way I can here in Hawaii. Go pilots.
- 7:59So she'll be running at the University of Portland next
- 8:02year, next fall. And we are wrapping up her
- 8:06senior season in fantastic fashion.
- 8:10She's #2 in the state for the 100, the 200 and the 400.
- 8:15And the one of the awesome things is she's number two
- 8:18behind her club teammate who lives on the Big Island.
- 8:23So yeah, so getting back to one of the reasons of, excuse me,
- 8:29the main reason is, is this meat management, right?
- 8:32I highly recommend all coaches look into understanding not just
- 8:36how you input your entries into theathletic.net or the the other
- 8:44entry systems, but the internal workings of meat and clerking
- 8:50and heating. I think if more coaches under
- 8:54really understood how that happens, I do not believe that
- 8:59any coach listening to this particular podcast would, would
- 9:05ever complain about the results coming from the tent because
- 9:10tent life it is, it's stressful life because it is, is so
- 9:17critical that results are accurate and they're deliberate
- 9:22in a, in a timely fashion. And there is some nervousness in
- 9:25the tent If if you miss that gun signal or the, or the signal
- 9:30doesn't get transferred from the, the gun to the receiver to
- 9:33start the computer telling you it is crucial.
- 9:38So I, I highly recommend that all the coaches consider looking
- 9:42into meat management software, certainly run meat.
- 9:47It's my number one recommended one looking to Eagle Eye
- 9:52software, timing cameras, the system, you can get a very good
- 9:56system for well under $10,000. And, you know, educating
- 10:01yourself and not only just yourself, but your coaches and
- 10:05your athletes of, of the process of certainly first call, second
- 10:09call, final call and, and all those things.
- 10:12So I'm, I'm grateful again for this opportunity to, to have
- 10:18here, Mike, in this platform that you provide, you do so much
- 10:21for the, the track and field community.
- 10:24It is it, it, it goes without mentioning that you certainly
- 10:29are appreciated in my mind and my eyes and my heart.
- 10:32So thank you so much for the opportunity and signing off.
