- 1:39Speaker 3: My next guest is a filmmaker. He's working pro wrestling
- 1:43Speaker 3: where you all to a warrior again, I feel like
- 1:44Speaker 3: I just said this, And he's also a staffer at
- 1:47Speaker 3: the New York Asian Film Festival. He actually hosted his
- 1:50Speaker 3: own podcast as well, called The Turnbuckle Throwbacks with guests
- 1:56Speaker 3: David Powers. So, Dave, thanks for coming on the podcast.
- 1:59Speaker 4: Thank you for having me. Dave.
- 2:01Speaker 3: No, it's been quite an eventful day.
- 2:03Speaker 4: I may have acted an understatement after that movie.
- 2:08Speaker 3: I might have accidentally shown you a gay porn and
- 2:12Speaker 3: I'm sorry big Foot porn zero. Well, in the in
- 2:17Speaker 3: my defense, I didn't think dB Cooper versus Bigfoot was
- 2:20Speaker 3: gonna be a euphism for a gay porn.
- 2:23Speaker 4: Well, first of all, I didn't know who dB Cooper
- 2:26Speaker 4: was or is, and that you know, that title doesn't
- 2:30Speaker 4: really like give away, like, hey, this is gonna be
- 2:32Speaker 4: like the most awkward movie, one of the most awkward
- 2:35Speaker 4: movies ever made.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Yeah, it was pretty awkward. There was no story, and
- 2:41Speaker 3: there was a bunch of shirtless guys in the woods
- 2:43Speaker 3: just kind of walking around.
- 2:45Speaker 4: Well, you know, like I was telling you, like, oh,
- 2:47Speaker 4: you know, this movie seems like it's like, you know,
- 2:49Speaker 4: go in the same direction as like a lot of
- 2:50Speaker 4: other like you know, crappy b movies like bird Demic,
- 2:53Speaker 4: you know, where there's like just like a driving scene
- 2:55Speaker 4: that's like in real time, you know, guy, if they're
- 2:58Speaker 4: filming like every sing turn the cars making and you know,
- 3:02Speaker 4: there's this like shirtless dude in the woods just walking
- 3:05Speaker 4: around and it's like eighteen minutes later, finally arrives to
- 3:08Speaker 4: a house and then like other shirtless dudes come out
- 3:11Speaker 4: of the house and invite him in. It's and it's
- 3:13Speaker 4: just kind of like like, oh, you know, that's that's
- 3:16Speaker 4: really like stupid and funny. And then it just continues
- 3:20Speaker 4: and there's no story And I even told you to
- 3:24Speaker 4: fast forward several times, and it just keeps getting awkward.
- 3:27Speaker 3: We fast forward it through twenty minutes, and you know
- 3:30Speaker 3: it's funny too. The when when all those guys are
- 3:33Speaker 3: coming out of the house, it was like a clown car.
- 3:35Speaker 3: It was like more shirtless guys can fit in his house. Uh.
- 3:38Speaker 3: It was just unbelievable that that that somebody actually thought
- 3:42Speaker 3: that was gonna be a passable movie. I actually wonder
- 3:45Speaker 3: how this is actually being marketed.
- 3:47Speaker 4: And or if it's even being marketed. Yeah, exactly, Well,
- 3:50Speaker 4: I'm sure it's being marketed somewhere, but not to anything
- 3:53Speaker 4: that we would actually look at, because well, first of all,
- 3:59Speaker 4: there's like Bigot is just like walking, you know, stalking
- 4:02Speaker 4: through the woods, and you know, there's these shirtless dudes.
- 4:07Speaker 4: You know, even they're interacting with one another awkwardly, having
- 4:11Speaker 4: like these conversations that just like they're not conversations, and
- 4:15Speaker 4: it's just big Bigfoot, you know, you know, peeking into
- 4:18Speaker 4: their house. So it's like bigfoot of a pervert too,
- 4:21Speaker 4: Like what's they're on the second floor and he's peaking
- 4:24Speaker 4: into the windows.
- 4:25Speaker 3: So he's up on his ladder, he's like on the
- 4:29Speaker 3: side of the house like clutching on or hanging with
- 4:32Speaker 3: room it's almost like an animal house when when they
- 4:35Speaker 3: got the ladder, looked at the girls, but it's Bigfoot
- 4:38Speaker 3: looking at a bunch of shirtless dudes exactly that are
- 4:40Speaker 3: continuously changing from shorts to pants in public or in
- 4:45Speaker 3: the house. Yes, lots of toy gun play, lots of
- 4:51Speaker 3: them in the in the looking in the mirror, lots
- 4:53Speaker 3: of walking, lots of nothing.
- 4:55Speaker 4: It supposed to be like a turkey shoe going on,
- 4:58Speaker 4: and like they find bones in the and it looks
- 5:00Speaker 4: like somebody's like leftover KFC or Popeyes or something.
- 5:05Speaker 3: And for all the people who got killed, the gore
- 5:07Speaker 3: level was like less than one.
- 5:09Speaker 4: There's no gore. Yeah, Like he's like slashing somebody in
- 5:12Speaker 4: the face and they make like a kind of like
- 5:14Speaker 4: there's like a folly sound for like face slashing, and
- 5:18Speaker 4: it's just like a guy falling back into the wood,
- 5:20Speaker 4: back into like a pool with like no blood and
- 5:22Speaker 4: he's dead.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Yeah, sounds about right. So what would you give dB
- 5:26Speaker 3: Cooper versus Bayfoot on a scale of one to a million?
- 5:29Speaker 4: God like negative a million, negative a million.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I would say at least probably negative nine hundred
- 5:35Speaker 3: and ninety.
- 5:36Speaker 4: No, there's like lots of like these like lost films,
- 5:40Speaker 4: you know, all over the world, and you know there
- 5:43Speaker 4: there's people trying to find you know, was it laun
- 5:46Speaker 4: Cheney's you know, London at midnight? Like it's only stills
- 5:50Speaker 4: of it, and you know, imagine you can just find
- 5:54Speaker 4: whatever computer this guy has this shitty movie on and
- 5:56Speaker 4: just delete it. So then it's like completely lost.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it's completely lost for ever. Yeah. So let's
- 6:02Speaker 3: never talk about dB Cooper versus Bigfoot. Uh yeah, somebody
- 6:07Speaker 3: asks you've never seen it?
- 6:08Speaker 4: You know, there's just like some things that you can't unsee.
- 6:12Speaker 4: Let's hopefully like I get hit by something very hard
- 6:15Speaker 4: and forget that I saw this movie. Yeah, we'll never
- 6:18Speaker 4: speak about again.
- 6:20Speaker 3: So Dave so that we we've been friends for a while. Yes,
- 6:23Speaker 3: and uh we actually met through social media. Yes, and
- 6:26Speaker 3: now you're here in in Casa day Bullis for the podcast. Yes,
- 6:31Speaker 3: I wanted to ask before we get to how we
- 6:33Speaker 3: met and everything else. Well, even though I just told
- 6:35Speaker 3: the story, but how we met through social media? Yes,
- 6:37Speaker 3: but you know it's a question I want. I always ask,
- 6:40Speaker 3: and I always want to to the start of this
- 6:41Speaker 3: and to always get to the start of when you
- 6:43Speaker 3: sort of got bit by by all of this. So
- 6:46Speaker 3: you were in college, correct? Did you go to college
- 6:49Speaker 3: for for film?
- 6:51Speaker 4: Initially I was going for for business and marketing, and uh,
- 6:55Speaker 4: you know, there's just got to a point where you know,
- 6:57Speaker 4: just didn't know where any of it was going. You know,
- 7:00Speaker 4: I had no you know, particular you know, endgame or
- 7:03Speaker 4: goal or anything in mind. And it was just like
- 7:06Speaker 4: a really frustrating experience, like for a lot of people.
- 7:10Speaker 4: And I always always want to work in like entertainment
- 7:14Speaker 4: and like when I was younger, I've always been a
- 7:18Speaker 4: big pro wrestling fan as you know.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I know that.
- 7:20Speaker 4: You know you're wearing your Ultimate Warrior shirt. I'm wearing
- 7:22Speaker 4: my Rick Martell shirt.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, seriously, I wore this Ultimate Warrior shirt for you. Yes,
- 7:27Speaker 3: you run the stud plexus. But we'll get to all that.
- 7:30Speaker 4: Yeah, just but which is another like like an ominous
- 7:35Speaker 4: like perverted like name and it's not I'll well, maybe
- 7:39Speaker 4: we could talk about that later. I just show like
- 7:42Speaker 4: bad wrestling videos and stuff like on Facebook through secret
- 7:45Speaker 4: group and but anyway, that's neither here nor there. But
- 7:52Speaker 4: you know, I was interested in in film and entertainment
- 7:55Speaker 4: and stuff like that because you know, you're just growing
- 7:58Speaker 4: up like watching pro wrestling, and you know, I got
- 8:01Speaker 4: into movies through watching a lot of horror movies like
- 8:04Speaker 4: Nightmare on Elm Street. Like my parents would just you know,
- 8:07Speaker 4: watch Freddy Krueger and have fun kid and yeah, and
- 8:13Speaker 4: and you know getting into actually like in high school,
- 8:16Speaker 4: like I was like a huge fan of black exploitation movies.
- 8:19Speaker 4: Oh yeah, Like I remember seeing a clip of doll
- 8:24Speaker 4: Might the movie The Great White Hype, and it's such
- 8:29Speaker 4: like a like a weird movie to kind of be
- 8:31Speaker 4: introduced to something. But I remember like see, actually, no,
- 8:35Speaker 4: that wasn't even in high school. That was like before
- 8:37Speaker 4: high school, like junior high or something like that. When
- 8:39Speaker 4: I first saw Dollmight, and I was so enamored by
- 8:42Speaker 4: like the horrible karate fro from the this quick clip
- 8:47Speaker 4: of Dollmight in The Great White Hype. I'm like, I
- 8:49Speaker 4: have to see this movie. This is like like he's
- 8:53Speaker 4: Rudy Ray Moore, you know, God Rest the Soul. Like
- 8:56Speaker 4: he's you know, trying like he's not like in the
- 8:59Speaker 4: best shape ever and uh trying to lift his leg
- 9:02Speaker 4: to do a karate kick, not making any contact with
- 9:05Speaker 4: this guy and he you know it was like a
- 9:06Speaker 4: thug falling into like a trunk of a car. I'm like,
- 9:10Speaker 4: like even as a kid, I was like like, I
- 9:12Speaker 4: know this is not good, but it's funny. Yeah, And
- 9:16Speaker 4: I want to know, like what, you know, what movie
- 9:18Speaker 4: is this? And like how did how was this even made?
- 9:23Speaker 4: Who created it? And I don't know. Just like that,
- 9:27Speaker 4: that curiosity kind of you know, lingered on and uh.
- 9:32Speaker 4: Back in twenty ten, I got to go to my
- 9:35Speaker 4: first ever New York Asian Film Festival, which I currently
- 9:38Speaker 4: work for now, and uh, just watching some of these movies,
- 9:42Speaker 4: like some of the genre movies, some of the rom coms,
- 9:44Speaker 4: and like I was being exposed to a lot of
- 9:46Speaker 4: different like stuff that I never previously saw, and it
- 9:50Speaker 4: just bugged the hell out of me, Like how the
- 9:52Speaker 4: hell do they make this? Like from like the simplest ones,
- 9:55Speaker 4: the more commlicated ones, like I know, you know.
- 9:59Speaker 2: We'll be back after a word from our sponsor, and
- 10:05Speaker 2: now back to the show.
- 10:09Speaker 4: From what little I knew about like entertainment and you know, filmmaking,
- 10:14Speaker 4: Like I know there's a camera, I know that there's
- 10:15Speaker 4: like a bunch of people behind the camera, but what
- 10:18Speaker 4: the hell are they doing?
- 10:19Speaker 3: What are they all doing.
- 10:20Speaker 4: Like when you watch like a TV show or a
- 10:22Speaker 4: movie that has like a like a film element to it,
- 10:26Speaker 4: like there's somebody filming a movie, like you always see
- 10:29Speaker 4: like people walking back and forth, and you know they're
- 10:32Speaker 4: moving stuff and carrying stuff, and it's just kind of
- 10:34Speaker 4: like what are they all doing? And you know, actually
- 10:41Speaker 4: from attending the New York Asian Film Festival, like that
- 10:46Speaker 4: curiosity just like like it's like, Okay, I have to
- 10:49Speaker 4: figure this out. And actually six months later, like I
- 10:54Speaker 4: actually ended up on a film set and once once
- 10:58Speaker 4: I got on, it was just like a like a
- 11:00Speaker 4: friend of a friend who knew somebody who was a DP,
- 11:04Speaker 4: and I was like questioning, like like I'm thinking about
- 11:07Speaker 4: going back to school, maybe like a film school or
- 11:09Speaker 4: something like that, and this friend of mine was just like, Nah,
- 11:14Speaker 4: you don't. I don't even waste your time, Like I
- 11:17Speaker 4: know somebody who's a DP. You can learn all that
- 11:19Speaker 4: stuff on set. I'm like, wait, what, Like I don't
- 11:22Speaker 4: have to go to a school and pay them like
- 11:25Speaker 4: tons of money and spend another four years to get
- 11:29Speaker 4: a diploma so I can do something like I could
- 11:31Speaker 4: just do this, Like I can learn this like on
- 11:33Speaker 4: the job, and he's like, yeah, sure, and sure enough
- 11:37Speaker 4: he was right and it does. And you know, just
- 11:42Speaker 4: getting onto a film set, just seeing what people were like,
- 11:44Speaker 4: figuring out what people were doing, It's it blew my mind.
- 11:48Speaker 4: And you know, I got the bug instantly. And it's
- 11:52Speaker 4: just like I want to I know, I'm not gonna
- 11:54Speaker 4: be like doing everything that everybody's doing on set, but
- 11:58Speaker 4: I want to learn what these guys are doing and
- 12:02Speaker 4: hopefully make a living out of it if possible.
- 12:04Speaker 3: Yeah, and honestly, your friend was right, by the way,
- 12:07Speaker 3: because honestly, it's like this podcast, it's basically it is
- 12:11Speaker 3: an audio film school. Like we were talking about, you know,
- 12:14Speaker 3: as who were you know, eating or whatever or when
- 12:16Speaker 3: you first got here. I forget whatever we were talking about. Yeah,
- 12:20Speaker 3: it's basically, you know, you have a lot of options now.
- 12:23Speaker 3: People have options, you know, people who listen to this podcast. No,
- 12:26Speaker 3: I'm not a big fan of college. I become a
- 12:29Speaker 3: fan of college less and less. Yeah, just because the
- 12:32Speaker 3: promise doesn't deliver. I mean, you're taught from from when
- 12:35Speaker 3: you're like, you know, in kindergarten, first grade. You have
- 12:38Speaker 3: to go to college and get a good job. You
- 12:40Speaker 3: have to have that diploma to get whatever you get
- 12:42Speaker 3: it and then you realize, holy crap, it's like there's
- 12:45Speaker 3: a gluttony of people with the same degree in the field. Yeah,
- 12:49Speaker 3: and it's just like do I really even need this, Like,
- 12:51Speaker 3: you know, do I really need this to do? Like, hell,
- 12:53Speaker 3: I have a degree in business, and I mean I've never,
- 12:56Speaker 3: honest to god, I've learned so much more outside of college.
- 13:00Speaker 3: James Altatrow, he says, do you really need to pay
- 13:01Speaker 3: two hundred thousand dollars to learn how to learn? No?
- 13:04Speaker 4: Exactly. And there's also something that he you know, speaks
- 13:08Speaker 4: about like in depth to especially like his like anti
- 13:11Speaker 4: college stuff. It's like there's a lot of like, you know,
- 13:15Speaker 4: you know, things in real life that you won't learn
- 13:18Speaker 4: in college, like like how to fail. Like there's no
- 13:20Speaker 4: class on like failing, Like everybody's trying not to fail
- 13:25Speaker 4: in college and if you fail, that's a bad thing
- 13:28Speaker 4: in real life again, but in real life, especially in filmmaking,
- 13:32Speaker 4: like it's kind of like the more you fuck up,
- 13:34Speaker 4: like the more you learn, yes, And in real life,
- 13:39Speaker 4: you know, you really do have to screw up to
- 13:42Speaker 4: to learn and to you know, hopefully not make those
- 13:45Speaker 4: same mistakes.
- 13:46Speaker 3: Yeah, and when you do fail, you can you know,
- 13:49Speaker 3: this is saying that calm wooters do not a good
- 13:53Speaker 3: sailor make.
- 13:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:54Speaker 3: So if you're just always smooth sailing and all these
- 13:56Speaker 3: calm wooters and everything's just cope, aesthetic and whatever anybody
- 13:59Speaker 3: can do that, you don't need any anybody, anybody. You
- 14:02Speaker 3: don't even need sailor training.
- 14:04Speaker 4: You know what I mean.
- 14:04Speaker 3: You could just put that ship and just steer it away.
- 14:07Speaker 3: But when the woods start getting very bad, the water's
- 14:09Speaker 3: geld all choppy, and then you're fighting tidal waves, and
- 14:12Speaker 3: then you're fighting krakens and all sorts of stuff, and
- 14:14Speaker 3: you have scurvy that.
- 14:16Speaker 4: Bigfoot and bigfoot.
- 14:17Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's when you have to know, oh my god,
- 14:21Speaker 3: thank god. You know this is teaching, is something and
- 14:23Speaker 3: it kind of like, you know what Nietzsche says, whatever
- 14:25Speaker 3: doesn't kill you makes you stronger. So it's kind of
- 14:28Speaker 3: like one of those things. And you know, and honestly,
- 14:30Speaker 3: and to Dave, with so many film productions out there
- 14:34Speaker 3: and with all this other stuff, you can just go
- 14:37Speaker 3: on YouTube. If I was in high school right now,
- 14:39Speaker 3: even in middle school right now, and I looked up
- 14:41Speaker 3: films and stuff like that, or I looked up what
- 14:43Speaker 3: was going on in my area wherever the hell I
- 14:46Speaker 3: lived in the world. I mean, you can find a
- 14:48Speaker 3: ton of other people doing the exact same thing and go, hey,
- 14:50Speaker 3: you know, you're shooting a film maybe next weekend, or
- 14:53Speaker 3: they're looking for people. Go to my local film office
- 14:56Speaker 3: and just see about that.
- 14:58Speaker 4: You know.
- 14:58Speaker 3: One thing I want to tell people is if you
- 15:00Speaker 3: want to go to college, go to college. If you
- 15:01Speaker 3: ask what you said honestly, but I would always recommend this,
- 15:05Speaker 3: take a gap year high school to college. Take that
- 15:08Speaker 3: gap year and just do a ton of stuff. Like
- 15:11Speaker 3: we were talking about earlier. If there's something that you
- 15:13Speaker 3: want to do in your life and it's itching you
- 15:15Speaker 3: constantly and you're like, God, damn it. You know, I
- 15:17Speaker 3: really want to go to wrestling school. I really want
- 15:19Speaker 3: to go make a film. I really want to do it.
- 15:22Speaker 3: Go do it. Yeah, Like before it's too late, and
- 15:25Speaker 3: too late is when you're when you're dead. Yeah, That's
- 15:27Speaker 3: why I classed it too late.
- 15:29Speaker 4: Because you could still be a wrestler. Like if you're eighty,
- 15:31Speaker 4: you chances are you're gonna get like really injured, but
- 15:34Speaker 4: probably like after one bump in wrestling school. But uh yeah,
- 15:39Speaker 4: I totally agree. Like if you if there's like a
- 15:41Speaker 4: niche that you want to scratch, to scratch it. You know,
- 15:46Speaker 4: there's like so many people that try to say like,
- 15:48Speaker 4: oh I don't have any regrets or anything like that.
- 15:50Speaker 4: Everybody has like some sort of regret. Like you can
- 15:54Speaker 4: go on social media and see like all these different
- 15:56Speaker 4: you know, entrepreneurs like Gary Vee and uh Tim Ferris
- 15:59Speaker 4: and all that and in the Rock too, and like
- 16:03Speaker 4: every single post is like positive, and it's like it
- 16:05Speaker 4: can't be that way. There's there's got to be like
- 16:07Speaker 4: something that they regretted or something like that. You know,
- 16:11Speaker 4: like there's everybody loves, especially on social media posts in
- 16:14Speaker 4: there and their w's their wins. So and I don't know,
- 16:17Speaker 4: just just from my experience in real life, you know,
- 16:20Speaker 4: there's more losses than are our wins. And and that
- 16:26Speaker 4: just happens with everyone. It's not like exclusive to to
- 16:29Speaker 4: certain people. And I feel like if if there's like
- 16:31Speaker 4: a certain thing that you want to do, especially going
- 16:33Speaker 4: into film, as crazy of a world as it is,
- 16:37Speaker 4: and as much like it makes euro sense to get
- 16:40Speaker 4: into it, still do it. It's it's you know you know,
- 16:45Speaker 4: like you know me from from doing Warrior University with
- 16:48Speaker 4: the Ultimate Warrior and that was just like such a
- 16:50Speaker 4: like a random thing for me, and that was just
- 16:52Speaker 4: like one of the stops on my film journey. And
- 16:56Speaker 4: you know, I just took like a thing that I
- 16:58Speaker 4: was really curious about, and you know, I was like,
- 17:03Speaker 4: you know what, I can do this, and I gave
- 17:05Speaker 4: it a shot. And you know, so many like opportunities
- 17:10Speaker 4: that I wouldn't never have experienced, like you know, doing
- 17:13Speaker 4: a Warrior University with Ultimate Warrior. That same year, I
- 17:17Speaker 4: got to work on The Victoria's Secret Show for my
- 17:19Speaker 4: first time, and they brought me back a second year,
- 17:23Speaker 4: and just like doing a music video for a friend
- 17:28Speaker 4: of mine, like just having like people like giving me
- 17:31Speaker 4: an opportunity, trusting me to do something that you know,
- 17:34Speaker 4: people wish that they could do. So yeah, absolutely, Like
- 17:39Speaker 4: if there's any sort of curiosity that you have about
- 17:42Speaker 4: life or something that you wish to do, like do it,
- 17:45Speaker 4: just don't like keep thinking about it.
- 17:47Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, And that's why I always say, like people
- 17:50Speaker 3: always wait till they're they're prepared. You're never gonna be prepared.
- 17:53Speaker 3: It's never gonna be the right time you have to.
- 17:55Speaker 3: What I would say is have your bets as much
- 17:58Speaker 3: as possible. Yeah, and then and just plunge right into it.
- 18:01Speaker 4: Yeah, and see what.
- 18:02Speaker 3: You can do. I mean like I'm not saying quit
- 18:04Speaker 3: your job and and you know what like like that,
- 18:07Speaker 3: like like my like I was telling you before about
- 18:09Speaker 3: my UH about my one friend he wanted to go
- 18:11Speaker 3: to wrestling school and he kept saying finding excuses, and
- 18:14Speaker 3: I said, dude, like you know, if you want to
- 18:16Speaker 3: do it, just do it. Yeah. And honestly, I have
- 18:18Speaker 3: friends of mine who want to make films and they
- 18:20Speaker 3: always talk about these ideas. I'm like, dude, if you
- 18:22Speaker 3: have a screenplay in your head, just start running it down,
- 18:24Speaker 3: go go out. Honestly, Writer's Duet is my new jam. Okay,
- 18:29Speaker 3: that's my that's what. Yeah, that's my new that's my
- 18:31Speaker 3: new thing. Writer's Duet is UH is UH a screamering software,
- 18:36Speaker 3: the best screamwriting software. It's all cloud based. I held
- 18:39Speaker 3: by the thumbs because I always like to have a
- 18:41Speaker 3: physical copy. However, here's what Raiter's Duet is. Just it
- 18:44Speaker 3: blew me away. It comes with an actual Like now,
- 18:47Speaker 3: he's a cloud based, but you can download the actual
- 18:49Speaker 3: like software for it, so now it sinks up everything.
- 18:52Speaker 3: So like, let's just say you do want to go offline,
- 18:54Speaker 3: you can actually download your scripts, write them all offline,
- 18:57Speaker 3: and then as soon as you're back with internet, it'll
- 18:58Speaker 3: automatically resink it.
- 19:00Speaker 4: That's amazing.
- 19:00Speaker 3: So see that that's key because I'm always like, what
- 19:02Speaker 3: if I'm somewhere and I don't have internet? Yeah, that
- 19:05Speaker 3: it just answered my question for me right there. I
- 19:08Speaker 3: have no more excuses. So I just bought it. And
- 19:11Speaker 3: it's better than pretty much everything I've ever Actually, it
- 19:13Speaker 3: is better than everything I've ever used.
- 19:14Speaker 4: I've used for is now.
- 19:15Speaker 3: The future is now, and it is Writer's Duet because
- 19:17Speaker 3: I've used Celtics, I've used Fade in final draft, I've
- 19:23Speaker 3: used Sophocles. I think I Cles twice maybe I did,
- 19:27Speaker 3: but anyways, I've used them all and I'm telling you, uh,
- 19:31Speaker 3: and this isn't a commercial by way of for Itter's Duet.
- 19:33Speaker 3: Sometimes people ask me if I get paid for some
- 19:35Speaker 3: of this stuff.
- 19:35Speaker 4: I'm like, no, like.
- 19:36Speaker 3: Honestly, I just I just I just that works. Yeah,
- 19:39Speaker 3: I like, like I just told people stuff that works,
- 19:41Speaker 3: and I will I some like some things if it's
- 19:43Speaker 3: on Amazon. There's a ninety half percent chance if you
- 19:46Speaker 3: go to Dave Bulls dot com and you see a link,
- 19:48Speaker 3: nine percent chance that it's an affiliate link. But I
- 19:50Speaker 3: least some mos straight with that. Yeah, but like but
- 19:53Speaker 3: but hey, at least it's something I actually use. But
- 19:56Speaker 3: like writer's wet or whatever else you hear we talk
- 19:58Speaker 3: about whether you know, whatever it is, I make year
- 20:00Speaker 3: old dollars off of that. I'm just telling you it
- 20:02Speaker 3: just comes up in the course of conversation.
- 20:05Speaker 2: We'll be right back after a word from our sponsor,
- 20:11Speaker 2: and now back to the show.
- 20:14Speaker 3: And you know that's what we were talking about too,
- 20:16Speaker 3: is you know you had an itch you liked the
- 20:19Speaker 3: you know, you wanted to get in a film.
- 20:20Speaker 4: You know.
- 20:21Speaker 3: I want to hear more too about the but the
- 20:22Speaker 3: the New York Asian Film Festival, because it sounds freaking awesome.
- 20:27Speaker 3: And that's the fest what we were talking about a
- 20:28Speaker 3: little bit earlier, where it's just like, you know, as
- 20:31Speaker 3: you know, we're both huge Asian cinema fans. Yes, I
- 20:34Speaker 3: I freaking love Asian cinema. I think it is just
- 20:38Speaker 3: you know, well.
- 20:39Speaker 4: I know you love Tarantino, so then you gotta love
- 20:41Speaker 4: Ring right, you gotta love Ring of Lamb, you gotta
- 20:44Speaker 4: like Takes Mecha, you gotta love Wook cham Clark. I mean,
- 20:49Speaker 4: you know these, I mean, Takashi Mecha might be one
- 20:54Speaker 4: of the most dynamic, diverse filmmakers ever because he has
- 21:00Speaker 4: made films like something like maybe The Audition or Visit
- 21:04Speaker 4: or Q and then he makes something like what is
- 21:07Speaker 4: it thirteen Samurai?
- 21:09Speaker 3: Is it yes?
- 21:11Speaker 4: Thirteen Assassin thirteen a sasurgs yeay h.
- 21:13Speaker 3: And and I was like, you know, say it's something
- 21:16Speaker 3: like that when he's just going and he's so freaking prolific.
- 21:18Speaker 4: He even makes like he's made children's films too. Yeah.
- 21:21Speaker 3: Yeah, And it's just like this guy man, he's just
- 21:24Speaker 3: all over the place.
- 21:25Speaker 4: Yeah, he's uh. Plus he's one of these filmmakers who
- 21:29Speaker 4: he'll do like, I don't know, like ten or more
- 21:32Speaker 4: productions a year. So yeah, maybe not all of them
- 21:34Speaker 4: are good, but he's constantly, you know, working his craft.
- 21:38Speaker 3: He must be non stop, just working, just churning it out.
- 21:41Speaker 4: Yeah. Absolutely.
- 21:43Speaker 3: So you know, just back to the New York Asian
- 21:45Speaker 3: Film Festival, you know, so, what were your first experiences
- 21:48Speaker 3: with that?
- 21:49Speaker 4: And I mean, because now you're actually a full fledged
- 21:51Speaker 4: staff member. Yeah, I'm an operations manager with them. Now
- 21:56Speaker 4: after some years of filmmaking and being a bit chaded
- 22:00Speaker 4: from the experience, you know, one of the things that
- 22:03Speaker 4: like always like kept me grounded in film and you know,
- 22:07Speaker 4: kept that fire going was the New York Asian Film Festival.
- 22:10Speaker 4: I heard about it back originally in two thousand and nine.
- 22:13Speaker 4: I was taken the Japanese class and there was just
- 22:17Speaker 4: like some guy that came in who was like a
- 22:19Speaker 4: former student of you know, that professor, and he mentioned like, oh,
- 22:24Speaker 4: there's like some film festivals showing like Asian movies, and
- 22:27Speaker 4: he was like, there's one called Vampire Girl versus Frankenstein Girl.
- 22:31Speaker 4: With my background that I already mentioned, I was like,
- 22:33Speaker 4: whoa where Like He's like, yeah, it's called the New
- 22:36Speaker 4: York Asian Film Festival. I think at that time they
- 22:39Speaker 4: were like at IFC, and I was like, after this class,
- 22:44Speaker 4: I'm going on my phone and I'm looking it up.
- 22:46Speaker 4: I'm signing up for any mailing list that they have,
- 22:50Speaker 4: and whatever screenings they have, I'm going to all of
- 22:53Speaker 4: them because previously, you know, now, whenever I would go
- 22:59Speaker 4: to a movie, which be like a like a random
- 23:01Speaker 4: like a not a random but like you know, your
- 23:03Speaker 4: standard AMC Low's whatever to see whatever Hollywood movies are
- 23:07Speaker 4: out there, usually for like for anything like international or
- 23:14Speaker 4: you know, just like an independent film, Like I didn't
- 23:17Speaker 4: think that those would be at like an actual movie theater,
- 23:19Speaker 4: Like I would just go to Best Buy to check
- 23:22Speaker 4: out something that wasn't going to be in a movie
- 23:24Speaker 4: theater or you know back in the day, you know, Blockbuster,
- 23:29Speaker 4: And so blew my mind that there was a festival
- 23:32Speaker 4: for this. It blew my mind that they were like
- 23:35Speaker 4: theaters that screened these movies. So it was like, I
- 23:38Speaker 4: it was like a whole new world was like, you
- 23:41Speaker 4: know opening up. I'm like, oh my god, there's this,
- 23:44Speaker 4: this exists, so, you know, true to my word, Like
- 23:48Speaker 4: as soon as that class was over with, like I
- 23:49Speaker 4: went on my phone looked it up, and I found
- 23:52Speaker 4: out that the two thousand and nine edition was over
- 23:56Speaker 4: Want Want, So I signed up for everything mailing lists,
- 24:00Speaker 4: got on their Facebook, liked it, and patiently waited for
- 24:05Speaker 4: a whole year to go buy for it to come back.
- 24:09Speaker 4: Uh so twenty ten was the first year I got
- 24:11Speaker 4: to go, and uh their main guest was Samuel Hung.
- 24:16Speaker 4: Oh Wow. Yeah, and Simon Yam who's also like a
- 24:21Speaker 4: you know, a bunch of you know, Ringo Lamb, you
- 24:25Speaker 4: know Category three, you know, Hong Kong movies. And I
- 24:29Speaker 4: was like, wow, you know, like I've seen these guys
- 24:32Speaker 4: like in movies, and they're they're here like they're guests,
- 24:35Speaker 4: like they're here to talk about these movies. And uh,
- 24:40Speaker 4: you know, I didn't know too much about the festival.
- 24:42Speaker 4: I didn't know too much about like, you know, some
- 24:45Speaker 4: of these directors or actors, but a New New York
- 24:48Speaker 4: Asian Film Festival kind of covered everything from like indie
- 24:52Speaker 4: to you know, big budget, you know films for you know,
- 24:55Speaker 4: all these different Asian countries. So you know, it just
- 24:58Speaker 4: rolled the dice and you know, picked up their catalog
- 25:03Speaker 4: like a program book when I went to my first screenings,
- 25:07Speaker 4: and I just like looked through it and I'm like,
- 25:09Speaker 4: this look was cool, this looks this has a badass title.
- 25:12Speaker 4: Let me check it out. Rom coms. I don't really
- 25:14Speaker 4: watch those, but I'm gonna watch them now.
- 25:16Speaker 3: Like which one did you used to watch twenty ten?
- 25:18Speaker 4: I don't remember it because I was like maybe I've
- 25:20Speaker 4: been years ago.
- 25:21Speaker 3: Maybe was it like drink drank drunk or maybe my
- 25:24Speaker 3: Sassy Girl or no, my Sassy.
- 25:26Speaker 4: Girl was earlier than that. Oh my god, I'm trying
- 25:29Speaker 4: to Once I figure it out, i'll let you know, Okay, But.
- 25:32Speaker 3: I looked in the show notes, but I you.
- 25:36Speaker 4: Know, I just watched like all these different kind of movies,
- 25:38Speaker 4: and there was like some stuff that I wouldn't even
- 25:41Speaker 4: like bother with. Like there was one documentary on a
- 25:45Speaker 4: Japanese folk artists called Live Tape, and I forgot the
- 25:52Speaker 4: name of the artists. I should remember because I have
- 25:55Speaker 4: the soundtrack at home, but it was literally this guy,
- 25:59Speaker 4: you know, starts off walking in you know, one of
- 26:02Speaker 4: one space and he just starts strumming on his guitar,
- 26:06Speaker 4: gets into song, and then he meets up with a
- 26:09Speaker 4: band member and some other part of town and goes
- 26:12Speaker 4: into another song. And it's all one shot and they're
- 26:14Speaker 4: walking through like the town, you know, him meeting you know,
- 26:19Speaker 4: one band member at a time, and then at the
- 26:21Speaker 4: end of the film, like they all meet together and
- 26:23Speaker 4: you know, get into the last song and I'm like, wow,
- 26:27Speaker 4: this is one shot. And I think I was telling you,
- 26:31Speaker 4: like beforehand, I was like, you know, what's behind the
- 26:33Speaker 4: camera how are they filming this? How did they make it?
- 26:36Speaker 4: You know, look the way it does? You know, how
- 26:39Speaker 4: are they able to do this in one shot for
- 26:41Speaker 4: like over an hour and have it look the way
- 26:44Speaker 4: it looks. Yeah, So just like watching these movies just
- 26:48Speaker 4: kind of like you know, being a being a big
- 26:51Speaker 4: film fan to begin with, because I was, you know,
- 26:55Speaker 4: like I mentioned, I was really into blaxploitation movies and
- 26:59Speaker 4: just kinds of film and anything that really piqued my interests.
- 27:03Speaker 4: Like I have this like habit of like I have
- 27:05Speaker 4: to dig as deep as possible, go further down the
- 27:08Speaker 4: rabbit hole to find out, like, you know, what is
- 27:11Speaker 4: this all about? You know, how did it start? Like yeah,
- 27:14Speaker 4: you know, how is it? What's the community? You know,
- 27:17Speaker 4: like and you know, I would notice that they were
- 27:22Speaker 4: like volunteers and stuff like that, So I'm like, I
- 27:24Speaker 4: have to work for the festival next year. So I
- 27:28Speaker 4: ended up volunteering. And now I'm actually like I've volunteered
- 27:31Speaker 4: so volunteers so often and been so consistent. Like now
- 27:35Speaker 4: I'm like part of staff.
- 27:37Speaker 3: So when did they offer you part of staff? Like
- 27:39Speaker 3: did they did somebody there finally say like, look, this
- 27:42Speaker 3: powers kid is really.
- 27:44Speaker 4: Like some gump shit, he's got some gumph.
- 27:46Speaker 3: Yeah, I went up promote them, But like, what was
- 27:49Speaker 3: the like, was there a final thing where somebody finally said, look, Dave,
- 27:52Speaker 3: we're just gonna promote you to this for next festival
- 27:56Speaker 3: or was there anything like that or was it like
- 27:57Speaker 3: sort of you could again, you were consistent, you were
- 28:01Speaker 3: always there, so I'm sure I'm sure somebody had it
- 28:03Speaker 3: in as something, right.
- 28:05Speaker 4: Uh, It's kind of hard to say because it just
- 28:07Speaker 4: kind of happened like organically. It's kind of like you're
- 28:10Speaker 4: just there so long that they're just gonna give you
- 28:12Speaker 4: a title because believe it or not, you know, despite
- 28:16Speaker 4: the colburd guests that we get, you know, we've had
- 28:19Speaker 4: people like Jackie Chan and I was at our last
- 28:22Speaker 4: last year's big guest was Leeby and Hun who was
- 28:25Speaker 4: in Magnificent seven. And you know, despite getting like some
- 28:30Speaker 4: of these big names, like, it's really like a our
- 28:32Speaker 4: team is really tiny. There's like a probably less than
- 28:36Speaker 4: ten people that program it and probably less than ten
- 28:40Speaker 4: people that are just part of the staff like helping
- 28:42Speaker 4: out with like, uh, you know, random stuff like one
- 28:45Speaker 4: of the things I'm doing this year's event planning I
- 28:47Speaker 4: don't have too much experience event planning, but I'm sure
- 28:51Speaker 4: as hell I'm going to have it this just this summer. Thankfully,
- 28:54Speaker 4: the person that I'm working with like has done that before,
- 28:57Speaker 4: so so we're not like, hmm, let's get some string
- 29:00Speaker 4: cheese and toasteds. So but it's a really small team
- 29:06Speaker 4: that makes this this big festival like come together. And
- 29:10Speaker 4: really I think, you know, me coming into the position
- 29:13Speaker 4: that I am with with operations management, it's just really
- 29:17Speaker 4: like I've just been there for for such a long time,
- 29:21Speaker 4: kind of like with a lot of the films that
- 29:23Speaker 4: I worked on in the past, and like some of
- 29:25Speaker 4: the guests that you've had on in the past, you know,
- 29:28Speaker 4: they want to do something so bad and they want
- 29:31Speaker 4: to figure out how it works. Like, you know, we
- 29:34Speaker 4: just wanted to do like every year that came by
- 29:36Speaker 4: that I was volunteering, it's like, you know, what else
- 29:38Speaker 4: can I do besides volunteering? I just asked for more
- 29:41Speaker 4: and more tasks, and you know, because it's such a
- 29:45Speaker 4: small team, like they're like, okay, I want.
- 29:47Speaker 3: You to do this, yeah, because I mean, yeah, everyone knows
- 29:50Speaker 3: each other, right, Yeah, you know, event planning. I've actually
- 29:53Speaker 3: done a few like events and stuff like that.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll be right back after a word from our sponsor,
- 30:03Speaker 2: and now back to the show.
- 30:07Speaker 3: My tips are always gonna be always, always, always try
- 30:12Speaker 3: to get like some kind of deal whenever you can.
- 30:15Speaker 3: And what I mean by that is I would always
- 30:18Speaker 3: I always pitched quantity over quality. This is the very
- 30:22Speaker 3: rare time I actually like, for instance, alcohol companies, I
- 30:26Speaker 3: would pitch them constantly, and eventually the vodka companies are
- 30:30Speaker 3: huge and sponsoring shit. Even if you can't get money,
- 30:34Speaker 3: even a free bottle of something is a pretty good
- 30:37Speaker 3: thing because you can give that away and it's always
- 30:39Speaker 3: it always looks pretty cool. You can put up their
- 30:41Speaker 3: stuff or you can just trickert yourself in the parking.
- 30:44Speaker 4: Lot and just you know, I think one of our
- 30:45Speaker 4: sponsors this year is the same beer sponsor from last year,
- 30:49Speaker 4: sing Tow. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, so they're gonna be one
- 30:52Speaker 4: of our sponsors. So we got the free beer. No,
- 30:55Speaker 4: we've got the beer hook up.
- 30:57Speaker 3: Yeah, see that stuff like that, that stuff like you know,
- 31:00Speaker 3: just get getting one sponsor and getting another sponsor, and
- 31:03Speaker 3: I mean, honestly, that's that's the whole thing.
- 31:05Speaker 4: One of the years we had like McDonald's as a
- 31:07Speaker 4: sponsor because I was like, because I had I was
- 31:10Speaker 4: been helping out with the Wikipedia page, and I asked
- 31:12Speaker 4: for like all the old programs I remember, like McDonald's
- 31:16Speaker 4: was one of our sponsors.
- 31:17Speaker 3: Like, I can't even imagine why McDonald's.
- 31:20Speaker 4: I don't know. Maybe they had the Mulan Seschwan sauce
- 31:22Speaker 4: or something like that.
- 31:23Speaker 3: Have you been seeing Ricking Mordy? By the way, have
- 31:25Speaker 3: you seen the newest one?
- 31:27Speaker 4: Not the newest season. I've seen like some past episodes,
- 31:29Speaker 4: as the show is incredible.
- 31:31Speaker 3: Yeah, that's the whole sess one.
- 31:32Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, he have the obsession with yeah, yeah.
- 31:35Speaker 3: With it with that, and that's why I I just
- 31:37Speaker 3: want to bring it up just in case. But yeah, mcmcdonald's,
- 31:39Speaker 3: I'm just like, what what the hell? You know? Honestly,
- 31:42Speaker 3: did did you ever get like any local restaurants that say, hey,
- 31:45Speaker 3: maybe I can cater for maybe one event and then
- 31:48Speaker 3: maybe the guy down the street and cater for ano event.
- 31:50Speaker 3: That what, you're not killing the small businesses and they
- 31:52Speaker 3: can sort of get something in return as well.
- 31:53Speaker 4: We're working on like stuff like that for this year.
- 31:55Speaker 4: So I don't know too much about it because I
- 31:59Speaker 4: can't talk to him much about it either, so you'll
- 32:01Speaker 4: find out it. You told me you'd have to kill me, right, yeah,
- 32:04Speaker 4: or make you watch dB Cooper Bigfoot again.
- 32:07Speaker 3: Well, I thought we were ever going to talk about
- 32:09Speaker 3: that again. I thought it was you have the men
- 32:11Speaker 3: and black me and give me one of those those
- 32:13Speaker 3: phaser things. You're just like, I don't remember anything.
- 32:16Speaker 4: Well, for the sake of punishment breaking up, it was
- 32:21Speaker 4: that the worst movie you've ever seen? Oh Man, for me,
- 32:25Speaker 4: it's not. Actually no, that's not the worst movie you've
- 32:27Speaker 4: ever seen. I'm trying to remember I've seen. I've seen
- 32:31Speaker 4: some like really horrible ones, because you know, just sometimes
- 32:35Speaker 4: it's just like curious about something. I think, like the
- 32:37Speaker 4: worst one was like an old school like Mexican horror movie,
- 32:41Speaker 4: like about an Aztec Mummy, and like the Mummy's not
- 32:44Speaker 4: like hardly in the movie, and like it's it's like
- 32:48Speaker 4: all like there's like a voiceover talking about like every
- 32:51Speaker 4: scene that's going on, and there's people talking. It's like,
- 32:54Speaker 4: let the people talk and I don't need a voice over,
- 32:56Speaker 4: just just let these people talk. And then I think,
- 32:58Speaker 4: like the way that the he is killed, like like
- 33:01Speaker 4: a car runs over it. I'm like, really, this this
- 33:04Speaker 4: creature comes back from the dead after thousands of years
- 33:07Speaker 4: and it gets run over by a car to be killed.
- 33:09Speaker 3: So they didn't have cars in age of They just
- 33:12Speaker 3: you know, had hooks up the brain, you know, or
- 33:14Speaker 3: if something knows to get the brain.
- 33:15Speaker 4: So apparently this mummy can come back to life, but
- 33:17Speaker 4: if it gets hit by a car, it's it's a
- 33:19Speaker 4: done deal.
- 33:21Speaker 3: But sorry, I had to go too far off as
- 33:23Speaker 3: we told about TV Cooper and stuff.
- 33:25Speaker 4: Now, yeah, but just.
- 33:26Speaker 3: Go back to the Asian Festival. You know, I'm glad
- 33:28Speaker 3: to hear that it's constantly growing. So what is this
- 33:30Speaker 3: year's festival.
- 33:31Speaker 4: It's gonna be happening June thirtieth through July fifteenth at
- 33:36Speaker 4: the Film Society of Lincoln Center, which also like hosts
- 33:39Speaker 4: like other festivals like the New York Film Festival, and
- 33:43Speaker 4: the last couple of days we're going to be at
- 33:44Speaker 4: the SBA Theater on twenty third Street.
- 33:48Speaker 3: Cool. And I mean, like, who's the big guest like
- 33:50Speaker 3: this year, because I know you've had Vinger Lamb, Jackie Chan.
- 33:53Speaker 3: He said, uh, haven't announced any guests, so having it
- 33:57Speaker 3: out okay, So we'll have to do something afterwards. So
- 34:01Speaker 3: I will update this as soon as make an announcement.
- 34:03Speaker 4: We'll be announcing it very soon. Actually, okay, good because
- 34:06Speaker 4: a little bit early with promoted. Well not too early,
- 34:08Speaker 4: but still early.
- 34:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 34:10Speaker 4: Yeah, be halfway through May. Yeah, so yeah, okay, got
- 34:13Speaker 4: about a month.
- 34:14Speaker 3: Yeah, we got a bad months. Yeah that's a good
- 34:16Speaker 3: time you get some promotion out.
- 34:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 34:18Speaker 3: But yeah, yeah, I'll all do this as well, because
- 34:20Speaker 3: you're actually the next episode of the Gate. So I
- 34:23Speaker 3: just I was like, well, I guess we'll I'll update it. Yeah,
- 34:27Speaker 3: I outdated when when When when you announced the guests?
- 34:29Speaker 3: So absolutely, so you know, what are some let me
- 34:32Speaker 3: ask you if we talk about networking and stuff, you
- 34:34Speaker 3: and I talk about all this stuff, what are some
- 34:36Speaker 3: of the things that you've taken away from doing the
- 34:38Speaker 3: festival about networking? I because I'm sure you've seen people
- 34:42Speaker 3: who are awful networkers probably oh yeah, cars out to everybody. Yeah,
- 34:46Speaker 3: and there's good networkers who are almost like and not
- 34:49Speaker 3: to use the Asian theme too much, but like a
- 34:50Speaker 3: ninja where it's like, you know, they're just like.
- 34:52Speaker 4: How dare you?
- 34:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I know, exactly right, played the stereotypes. Yeah, but no,
- 34:56Speaker 3: but like they they're basically like you. You might not know
- 35:00Speaker 3: who they are, but everyone seems to know who they are,
- 35:03Speaker 3: you know, like like hey, hey, do you know you know, uh,
- 35:06Speaker 3: maybe I don't know John Wong. Do you know John Wang?
- 35:10Speaker 4: Oh?
- 35:10Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I know John Wong, But I've never actually
- 35:12Speaker 3: met him. I just have heard of him, ye know
- 35:14Speaker 3: what I mean, that type of guy. So, I mean,
- 35:17Speaker 3: have you seen something like that at the festival? One
- 35:21Speaker 3: of some of the things that you've taken away from
- 35:22Speaker 3: it as well, just.
- 35:24Speaker 4: From working just in film in general, actually has helped
- 35:28Speaker 4: me out a lot, you know, working at the festival
- 35:30Speaker 4: because we do have these like high profile guests and
- 35:34Speaker 4: you never really know how like you know every everyone
- 35:37Speaker 4: in general when you meet them in real life and
- 35:40Speaker 4: they're all different, and you know, when we have like
- 35:43Speaker 4: big name guests or smaller name guests, it's just kind
- 35:45Speaker 4: of like I just treat them like humans because at
- 35:48Speaker 4: the end of the day, like I'm not gonna try
- 35:51Speaker 4: to pitch these guys an idea like or like hey,
- 35:53Speaker 4: could you get me a job? You know, I'm not
- 35:55Speaker 4: gonna be like begging leading job, give me a job
- 35:58Speaker 4: like Gil from Simpsons, give me a oh the good
- 36:00Speaker 4: of her, old Gil, give Gill a lick? Come on,
- 36:04Speaker 4: like no, no, like usually Actually, one of the many
- 36:10Speaker 4: jobs I've had in the past was to bodyguard you
- 36:12Speaker 4: know some of these guys.
- 36:13Speaker 3: Really, who's your bodyguard? For Jackie Chan?
- 36:16Speaker 1: Was one.
- 36:18Speaker 4: That one that one's actually kind of a stretch like
- 36:21Speaker 4: it still was like a bodyguard thing, but it was
- 36:23Speaker 4: literally like we need you to we need you to
- 36:25Speaker 4: walk mister Chan over to his car, and it was
- 36:28Speaker 4: like like five feet away or something like that.
- 36:30Speaker 3: Has anything ever happened? We better like put somebody down.
- 36:33Speaker 4: No. Actually, for the Jackie Chan thing, there were there
- 36:36Speaker 4: were like some like autograph hounds they're around, and it
- 36:40Speaker 4: was kind of strange because this we had him for
- 36:44Speaker 4: like a press conference, and it was just like it's
- 36:46Speaker 4: not one of those kind of things that you're gonna
- 36:47Speaker 4: like find out about or it was really like low
- 36:50Speaker 4: key and it's like, you know, I was just thinking
- 36:52Speaker 4: to myself, like how did these people know that he
- 36:54Speaker 4: was going to be here? So, you know, never estimate
- 36:57Speaker 4: the power of a stalker. Yes, son, But luckily there
- 37:02Speaker 4: was like me and another guy and you know, we
- 37:04Speaker 4: were you know, they were just like a bunch of
- 37:07Speaker 4: kids wanting autographs, so it wasn't that hard to you know,
- 37:12Speaker 4: put him down. But you know at that time, like
- 37:16Speaker 4: they were like a like a like an animal rapians
- 37:19Speaker 4: but high face. I'm like, no kid, Uh yeah, you
- 37:23Speaker 4: know from my experience in professional wrestling and power bomb
- 37:27Speaker 4: the kid on the concrete.
- 37:30Speaker 3: You gave me the rock bottom and the stole cold sign.
- 37:33Speaker 4: Yeah, I give him the super kick and uh I
- 37:35Speaker 4: give him the sleeper hole and cut his hair afterwards.
- 37:38Speaker 4: But anyway, but you know, it wasn't anything too crazy,
- 37:43Speaker 4: and you know, just one thing that I learned, and
- 37:46Speaker 4: you know, just I learned in real life. It's just
- 37:48Speaker 4: like you know, some people just don't want to be
- 37:50Speaker 4: bothered and situation like that. Uh, you know, just do
- 37:54Speaker 4: what I was told. Bring him to his car, let
- 37:57Speaker 4: him get in the car, and right away. And you know,
- 38:01Speaker 4: whenever I've like dealt with like guests in the past,
- 38:04Speaker 4: you know, I just give them their space. You know,
- 38:06Speaker 4: if they want to talk to me, they could talk
- 38:08Speaker 4: to me. If not, then fine, like just been like, uh,
- 38:12Speaker 4: there was like one really famous Korean actor, e Young Jay,
- 38:17Speaker 4: and you know there were some other big name Korean
- 38:20Speaker 4: you know stars that were there too, and they were
- 38:24Speaker 4: outside of the theater. They just wanted to sit down
- 38:26Speaker 4: at a table and talk. So I let them sit
- 38:29Speaker 4: there and talk and me and like one other person
- 38:31Speaker 4: was helping me out just watch the area. There was
- 38:34Speaker 4: like some people that like young Jay and like, yeah,
- 38:39Speaker 4: but give them, give them their space. And you know,
- 38:44Speaker 4: you know some thankfully, you know, some of these people
- 38:47Speaker 4: are you know kind enough to just hey, let these
- 38:49Speaker 4: guys like chill out. They're human beings, you know, let them,
- 38:53Speaker 4: let them chat with one another, because I'm sure like
- 38:54Speaker 4: with their schedules and stuff like that. You know, seeing
- 38:57Speaker 4: people that you work with or worked with in the past,
- 39:01Speaker 4: you know, they just want to hang out. And there's
- 39:03Speaker 4: a screening for one of Ejong Jay's films and he
- 39:07Speaker 4: just wanted to stand in the back and watch it.
- 39:10Speaker 4: So you know, I just you know, stood there with him,
- 39:13Speaker 4: let him do his thing. I didn't ask him any
- 39:15Speaker 4: questions or bother him, and at the end of it,
- 39:19Speaker 4: he just said thank you, And for me, that was
- 39:21Speaker 4: validation enough. But there's been times where I've you know,
- 39:26Speaker 4: bodyguarded like some of these guys. And there's one in particular,
- 39:30Speaker 4: Ringo Lamb, who is just kind of like, who the
- 39:33Speaker 4: hell is this guy? Why's he following me around all
- 39:35Speaker 4: the time? And then like at the end of it,
- 39:37Speaker 4: we were like best friends, and I'm like wow, like
- 39:41Speaker 4: this guy was like who the hell, Who the hell
- 39:44Speaker 4: is this guy following me around? And you know, at
- 39:47Speaker 4: the end of it, like I we actually like bumped
- 39:49Speaker 4: into each other at a at a restaurant.
- 39:55Speaker 2: We'll be right back after a word from our sponsor
- 40:01Speaker 2: and now back to the show.
- 40:04Speaker 4: And you know, after one of the screenings and separately separately.
- 40:08Speaker 3: Was he like, you're following me here too, a kid?
- 40:10Speaker 4: No, No, Actually, by that time, like he he got
- 40:13Speaker 4: he like grown got grown accustomed to me, and he
- 40:16Speaker 4: was like, hey, this guy's all right. And he actually
- 40:18Speaker 4: got like he stood up from the table that he
- 40:21Speaker 4: was at and went over to me and like shook
- 40:23Speaker 4: my hand. Oh, and you know, like you know said
- 40:26Speaker 4: hi to you know, the people that I was sitting with.
- 40:28Speaker 4: So you might have like situations like that, but like
- 40:31Speaker 4: I never go out of my way to say, like
- 40:33Speaker 4: here's my card, Like I was at Victoria's Secret Fashion show.
- 40:37Speaker 4: You should hire me for stuff?
- 40:38Speaker 1: I know.
- 40:39Speaker 4: The Ultimate Warrior.
- 40:40Speaker 3: Yeah, it was seriously well because at well, at that
- 40:42Speaker 3: point you didn't know the ultim war. Yes, yeah and
- 40:45Speaker 3: so so. Uh well, at that point you got to
- 40:48Speaker 3: everyone at the table, you have to say, this is
- 40:49Speaker 3: Ringo Lamb.
- 40:50Speaker 4: Oh, they already knew who he was.
- 40:51Speaker 3: This is there.
- 40:52Speaker 4: There were some of them were working with me at
- 40:54Speaker 4: the festival. One of them was like a friend who
- 40:57Speaker 4: flies out from from Austin. Her name just Christina High Christina.
- 41:01Speaker 4: I'm sure she'll be listening.
- 41:02Speaker 3: She better be listening. Yeah, I don't know who that is,
- 41:03Speaker 3: but she got to be listening.
- 41:05Speaker 4: So you know, she was hanging out and she's like,
- 41:07Speaker 4: oh my god, ring A Lamb. So you know, it
- 41:09Speaker 4: was it was a big deal, and it was like
- 41:11Speaker 4: it's such a genuinely nice thing for him to do,
- 41:13Speaker 4: Like I wasn't going to go out of my way
- 41:15Speaker 4: to you know, to be a fan or mark out
- 41:19Speaker 4: or anything like that.
- 41:20Speaker 3: Did anybody bring up the fact that City on Fire
- 41:25Speaker 3: is what let me change this run? Okay, that Reservoir
- 41:28Speaker 3: Dogs is very similar to City on Fire.
- 41:31Speaker 4: Oh you don't say, yeah, uh no, that wasn't brought up.
- 41:34Speaker 4: I think because it's like such a like uh uh
- 41:38Speaker 4: I think at this point, especially if you're going to
- 41:40Speaker 4: the festival. He probably already know that. Yeah, So it
- 41:43Speaker 4: was just kind of like a moot, you know, subject
- 41:45Speaker 4: to bring up. Also like he it was funny, he
- 41:47Speaker 4: was very shy, like he didn't really want to do
- 41:50Speaker 4: he didn't want to do a Q and A or
- 41:51Speaker 4: anything like that. Like we did give him like a
- 41:54Speaker 4: Lifetime Achievement award and he didn't. He just said thank you.
- 41:59Speaker 4: That was his speak. Uh. And it was funny because
- 42:02Speaker 4: he did have some like great stories like in the
- 42:04Speaker 4: back and stuff like that, but just you know, he's
- 42:06Speaker 4: a pretty shy guy or just didn't want to you know,
- 42:11Speaker 4: you know, talk for I don't know, I don't know
- 42:13Speaker 4: the specific reason, but it wasn't brought up. But I
- 42:17Speaker 4: did ask like one of the programmers like hey, basically
- 42:19Speaker 4: asking the same thing like hey, he's anybody Well I
- 42:21Speaker 4: know people have asked that question, but I was like, oh,
- 42:24Speaker 4: you know, what's his like take on that? And it's
- 42:26Speaker 4: just basically like, oh, well, we steal a lot of
- 42:29Speaker 4: American ideas, so if he stole if America's steal one
- 42:32Speaker 4: of Ardea is all right, that's cool with me. So
- 42:35Speaker 4: it was just kind of like you know, mutual kind
- 42:37Speaker 4: of like respects.
- 42:38Speaker 3: Yeah, you know that, that's pretty cool because.
- 42:41Speaker 4: Essentially that movie basically made Tarantino's career.
- 42:45Speaker 3: Oh yeah, absolutely. And then then Pulp Fiction was the
- 42:48Speaker 3: was the sort of death blow. Yeah, and I mean
- 42:50Speaker 3: that a good way. And that's a good one two combination.
- 42:52Speaker 3: It's probably one of the best one two guy. I
- 42:54Speaker 3: got into to a discussion with this for for a
- 42:57Speaker 3: film professor at Yale because he we were asking what
- 43:00Speaker 3: the best one two combination of movies from a director
- 43:04Speaker 3: that have to be back to back? Yeah, and uh,
- 43:07Speaker 3: that has that has to be up there. He ended
- 43:10Speaker 3: up contending that, oh god, what was it that he said?
- 43:14Speaker 3: It was actually very tough to beat to God, damn it.
- 43:17Speaker 3: I'm gonna I forget. But when I exact show, I
- 43:22Speaker 3: will link to it. I'll put like, this is what
- 43:23Speaker 3: the hell I was talking about. But I forget what
- 43:26Speaker 3: it was. It wasn't. For some reason, I keep wanting
- 43:29Speaker 3: to say Sam to Sam Peck and Paul movies, But
- 43:31Speaker 3: it wasn't Peck and Paul. It was. It may have
- 43:33Speaker 3: been something else it was it was it was something
- 43:35Speaker 3: else entirely, But I'll get I'll put this in the
- 43:38Speaker 3: show time and I'll end with.
- 43:40Speaker 4: The Breaking movies. The Breaking movies.
- 43:45Speaker 3: Claude Van Damn and Uh and Boogaloo Shrimp.
- 43:48Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, it was a great guest on the Super
- 43:50Speaker 4: Mario Brother Super Show.
- 43:51Speaker 3: Yeah, you know that one guy that not not not
- 43:53Speaker 3: Boogoloo Shrimp, but the other guy, Shabby Dude. Do you
- 43:56Speaker 3: know he used to like apparently a total fucking brick
- 43:58Speaker 3: in real life.
- 44:00Speaker 4: Well, with a name like shabby Doo, like either you're
- 44:02Speaker 4: really like the greatest guy ever, you're you're cursing God
- 44:06Speaker 4: for being named Shabbydoo.
- 44:07Speaker 3: I guess it's the latter, because apparently, like I've had
- 44:10Speaker 3: people who who've met him and stuff, and they said
- 44:13Speaker 3: he's just like even back then, they were like, he's
- 44:16Speaker 3: just And the girl who was in Breaking she said
- 44:18Speaker 3: he she knew for the after when they would like, hey,
- 44:21Speaker 3: we're gonna make a sequel, she's like, he better not
- 44:23Speaker 3: be in it. Wow, apparently because he's just so like
- 44:26Speaker 3: I'm the best dancer out of all of us, and
- 44:29Speaker 3: you better all.
- 44:31Speaker 4: Well, I guess you gotta have quay Nigo after being
- 44:33Speaker 4: on the Super Mario Brother Super Ship.
- 44:35Speaker 3: Well, Buolue show is apparently a good guy yeah, I
- 44:37Speaker 3: mean you have to be the name like Boogloo Shrimp.
- 44:39Speaker 4: Yeah, come on.
- 44:40Speaker 3: So so, I mean, you know, and it's great to be,
- 44:44Speaker 3: you know, the Asian Festival, the New York Asian Film Festival.
- 44:48Speaker 3: I'm just glad that there's actually festivals like that now. Yeah,
- 44:51Speaker 3: they're becoming more and more prevalent because, honestly, man like,
- 44:54Speaker 3: there were some kick ass movies that they're coming out
- 44:57Speaker 3: from Asia and sometimes he get Buried and Tarantino made
- 45:01Speaker 3: what was it Rolling Thunder, I think films or productions
- 45:03Speaker 3: where it was gonna be like, He's gonna start showing
- 45:05Speaker 3: these Apparently it just sort of teetered off because I think, yeah,
- 45:08Speaker 3: it wasn't seeing the ROI yeah, but I wanted to ask, though,
- 45:12Speaker 3: did you ever get to see Vampire Girl versus Frankenstuiner.
- 45:15Speaker 4: Yes? I did, Okay, got it. I got it on
- 45:17Speaker 4: like DVD, like I think like the following year or
- 45:19Speaker 4: something like that. Oh right, that's actually it was funny
- 45:22Speaker 4: because I uh, one of the friends that I made
- 45:26Speaker 4: through film just I guess to get like into like
- 45:29Speaker 4: you know, connecting with people and networking and stuff. I
- 45:33Speaker 4: was watching the sci fi show Face Off and there
- 45:37Speaker 4: was like one you know, I was starting to get
- 45:39Speaker 4: into film. I was just really being like as bold
- 45:42Speaker 4: as possible because it's just kind of like, yeah, I
- 45:44Speaker 4: saw this great opportunity to just grow as a person too,
- 45:47Speaker 4: like because I really like held back on, you know,
- 45:51Speaker 4: pursuing anything I was interested in, like a big wrestling fan,
- 45:53Speaker 4: but I never went to wrestling school. Yeah, but I
- 45:55Speaker 4: did go to the Chikara Pro first tryout, so really, yes,
- 46:00Speaker 4: how's that go? I'm not a wrestler, but it was fun.
- 46:04Speaker 3: Did you run the ropes.
- 46:06Speaker 2: They do?
- 46:07Speaker 4: We didn't run the ropes? It was like super super basic.
- 46:09Speaker 3: Did they let me ask you that? Did they just
- 46:11Speaker 3: like try to weed out everybody by making is just
- 46:14Speaker 3: do like bodyweight calisthenics like Hindu squats and running them.
- 46:18Speaker 4: Yeah, we we did that stuff, but it wasn't like
- 46:19Speaker 4: five hundred a Hindu squats or anything like that. I
- 46:22Speaker 4: essentially like the gist that I got from it was
- 46:25Speaker 4: like they were looking for new wrestlers, like genuinely looking
- 46:29Speaker 4: for new wrestlers. So they just started doing this so
- 46:33Speaker 4: you know that they could find new talent because they
- 46:36Speaker 4: were very like at the end of it, like I
- 46:39Speaker 4: could tell like most people, like including myself, were just
- 46:42Speaker 4: there just to like I wonder what it's like. Yeah,
- 46:44Speaker 4: And I specifically was going because a friend of mine's
- 46:49Speaker 4: like brother, badly wanted to be a wrestler. So I'm like,
- 46:51Speaker 4: you have to go through Chakaro Pro because they literally
- 46:55Speaker 4: had the best like trainers at that time. I'm sure
- 46:58Speaker 4: they still do now, but like my Quack and Bush, Yeah,
- 47:01Speaker 4: Mike quack and Bush, who's one of my favorite indie wrestlers,
- 47:05Speaker 4: and Bally wanted to be a wrestler, So I was like,
- 47:09Speaker 4: you know, you got to go to this, and then
- 47:11Speaker 4: I've got, you know, another itch had to be scratched,
- 47:14Speaker 4: so I was like, let me check this out. But
- 47:15Speaker 4: at the end of it, like the wrestlers on hand
- 47:18Speaker 4: and everybody, they were like almost like strong arming people
- 47:21Speaker 4: to do to to like we'll give you a discount
- 47:24Speaker 4: or something like that. But I was watching the sci
- 47:29Speaker 4: fi show Face Off, and there was like one person
- 47:33Speaker 4: on there named Sulei, who I was. I When getting
- 47:39Speaker 4: into film, one of the things I like promised myself
- 47:42Speaker 4: is like I have to align myself with people that
- 47:44Speaker 4: are doing better than me, for one thing, so I
- 47:46Speaker 4: can learn from them. And to you know, find people
- 47:49Speaker 4: that like, I know, I'm going to work well with
- 47:53Speaker 4: and three people in the area. So I saw her
- 47:57Speaker 4: on the show, thought she was awesome, enjoyed her work.
- 47:59Speaker 4: She is nearby. One of the key things that I
- 48:03Speaker 4: heard her say on the show or like an interview,
- 48:07Speaker 4: was that she was willing to work on local like
- 48:10Speaker 4: independent movie.
- 48:12Speaker 3: That's her kiss. So that that's right there. I got her.
- 48:15Speaker 4: I got her, she's mine.
- 48:17Speaker 3: And we always turned to guys with big chopping cigars
- 48:20Speaker 3: like what.
- 48:21Speaker 4: I got her, Yeah, and just thinking about the big
- 48:26Speaker 4: money bags with the dollar sign on it. I'm making
- 48:28Speaker 4: money exactly. And I reached out to her and it
- 48:31Speaker 4: turned out like she was, you know, also like a
- 48:34Speaker 4: big like Asian film fan despite her being Asian. And
- 48:39Speaker 4: but I found out you know from you know, we
- 48:42Speaker 4: you know, scheduled time to meet up and just like
- 48:44Speaker 4: chat to see like, hey, was this like this is
- 48:46Speaker 4: somebody I want to work with. And she mentioned that
- 48:48Speaker 4: she was originally going to school for like medical like prosthetics,
- 48:55Speaker 4: and she mentioned she went to the New York Asian
- 48:57Speaker 4: Film Festival in two thousand and nine for Vampire Girl
- 49:01Speaker 4: Versus Frankenstein Girl, and I think she met like uh
- 49:04Speaker 4: the the director, one of the directors and UH SFX artists,
- 49:12Speaker 4: UH Nishima, and she was like after I don't know
- 49:16Speaker 4: if it was specifically seeing that movie or just like
- 49:19Speaker 4: seeing some other movies in general, that kind of like
- 49:21Speaker 4: put it over the top that she actually got to
- 49:22Speaker 4: meet this guy in person, And I know it was
- 49:26Speaker 4: like a turning point for her to you know, go
- 49:28Speaker 4: to the festival, meet this, meet uh, meet Nishima, and uh,
- 49:34Speaker 4: you know, decide like, hey, you know, I'm done with
- 49:36Speaker 4: medical prosthetics. I want to do you know, movie makeup.
- 49:39Speaker 4: So you know, we both had that like in common
- 49:43Speaker 4: that like the festival was kind of like a light bulb,
- 49:46Speaker 4: you know for both of us like, hey, you know
- 49:48Speaker 4: there's there's you know, more to our day to day
- 49:52Speaker 4: life than just you know, going to work or whatever,
- 49:55Speaker 4: you know, plans that we you know had at the time.
- 49:58Speaker 2: We'll be right back after a word from our sponsor
- 50:05Speaker 2: and now back to the show.
- 50:08Speaker 4: So and you know, I just want to throw it
- 50:11Speaker 4: out there like like if you see somebody, even if
- 50:13Speaker 4: they're on TV or something like that, like uh, obviously
- 50:17Speaker 4: be polite and very you know, humble when you approach people,
- 50:22Speaker 4: because it really is annoying if you're like, hey you
- 50:25Speaker 4: want to be my movie, or hey can you work
- 50:27Speaker 4: on my movie or like, and there's like no real
- 50:30Speaker 4: like you know, plan behind asking them other than like,
- 50:32Speaker 4: hey can you do this for me?
- 50:33Speaker 3: Like because there's no script you know, you know what
- 50:35Speaker 3: I mean, there's no funding. It's just like it's I
- 50:37Speaker 3: know who probably gets it the worst. And he's not Asian,
- 50:40Speaker 3: but it is Bruce Campbell. I imagine he probably gets it
- 50:42Speaker 3: every single day, like, yes, we be in my movie.
- 50:46Speaker 4: Yeah, they probably call mash too.
- 50:47Speaker 3: Yeah, well they do exactly because they don't know exactly right.
- 50:50Speaker 3: And and and Brian halrand Dante from Clerks, Yeah, it
- 50:55Speaker 3: was great, you're supposed to be here today And he goes,
- 50:58Speaker 3: I was actually there one day talking to him. Yeah,
- 51:00Speaker 3: And somebody actually walked up to him and said, hey, dude,
- 51:04Speaker 3: you guys supposed to be here today. And he goes, yeah,
- 51:06Speaker 3: haven't heard that one a million times today exactly.
- 51:13Speaker 4: But you know, if there's like somebody that you want
- 51:15Speaker 4: to work with or somebody that you want to talk
- 51:16Speaker 4: to genuinely, you know, I absolutely recommend doing that too,
- 51:21Speaker 4: Like it you know a lot of you know, things
- 51:23Speaker 4: that we do for the festival, and you know things
- 51:25Speaker 4: that I've done, you know from my Actually here's a
- 51:27Speaker 4: good story for you. When I was working with Beyond Wrestling,
- 51:31Speaker 4: I think the like there's like one week where wwe
- 51:35Speaker 4: had the Muppets as like the guests like GM or
- 51:37Speaker 4: the guest host for Raw, and the promoter Drew was
- 51:41Speaker 4: like the Muppets on Raw, Like, well, that's that's ridiculous, Like,
- 51:45Speaker 4: so what is Beyond going to do? Have Tommy Wiseo
- 51:48Speaker 4: And I was like, I can get a hold of
- 51:49Speaker 4: them for you, And I think like, yeah, if you can,
- 51:52Speaker 4: I think he said to be like yeah, if you
- 51:53Speaker 4: could do that, like we'll see what we could do.
- 51:56Speaker 4: And I actually got Tommy Wiseel from the room on
- 51:58Speaker 4: the phone like the next and he was like talking
- 52:01Speaker 4: to me like what are you gonna do? Actually the
- 52:04Speaker 4: specific phrase that he said maybe about like twenty times
- 52:06Speaker 4: on the phone call is so what's the story, David?
- 52:09Speaker 4: And like I was like, oh my god, I have
- 52:12Speaker 4: Timmy Wisseou on the phone and he's interested in working
- 52:16Speaker 4: for Beyond Wrestling, this independent wrestling organization in Rhode Island.
- 52:21Speaker 3: That should be like the name of your book.
- 52:23Speaker 4: So what's the story, David, Yeah, in book forms exactly.
- 52:28Speaker 3: So it's just it's just an audiobook. But but yeah,
- 52:31Speaker 3: it was, so it's it's just, uh, it's just funny
- 52:34Speaker 3: because you know, wrestling sort of attracts a lot of
- 52:37Speaker 3: different people. Yeah, I again, you know, for everyone listening
- 52:41Speaker 3: to this, I as you know, as I've said before,
- 52:43Speaker 3: I have stopped watch rashally wrestling years ago. I just
- 52:46Speaker 3: talk about it now, yeah, because I just can't get
- 52:49Speaker 3: into it anymore. And I mean I haven't watched it
- 52:51Speaker 3: in years upon years, probably since I graduated. Well no,
- 52:55Speaker 3: I probably stopped maybe two thousand and eight, maybe somewhere
- 52:58Speaker 3: around there.
- 52:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 52:59Speaker 3: So but like I love all the old school stuff.
- 53:02Speaker 3: I love talking about the old school stuff. And I
- 53:03Speaker 3: think you and I use wrestling terms and every day speech, yeah,
- 53:06Speaker 3: just by like by by accident, like we're used to like.
- 53:09Speaker 4: Old Carnie terms to people that have no idea what
- 53:11Speaker 4: what it means. Like I'm really getting heating on this person,
- 53:14Speaker 4: Like I was trying to sell this and like is
- 53:16Speaker 4: this marking out? Like wait, what are these people talking about?
- 53:19Speaker 4: Like is he stiff in it?
- 53:21Speaker 3: Was he taking liberties? Yeah? Stuff like big time and
- 53:25Speaker 3: time and I love that term. It's just and like
- 53:28Speaker 3: he's a chopper. Yeah, it's just stuff like that, Like
- 53:31Speaker 3: he's jobbing out to him tonight. It's just stuff like that.
- 53:34Speaker 3: And it's just like it's like, it's just funny stuff
- 53:36Speaker 3: when when when they don't know what you're talking about. Yeah,
- 53:38Speaker 3: but people very rarely, like we were saying, they very
- 53:40Speaker 3: rarely will call you on it and stead they're just like,
- 53:42Speaker 3: oh yeah, because I think they kind of understand what
- 53:45Speaker 3: you're trying to say.
- 53:46Speaker 4: And it's funny because like I've never been like a
- 53:48Speaker 4: big fan of like you know, inside talk, like even
- 53:51Speaker 4: for film, Like when I've been on set, like somebody
- 53:53Speaker 4: calls like a cable a stinger, I'm like, yeah, wait
- 53:55Speaker 4: wait see.
- 53:56Speaker 3: This, it's a cable eighty seven's yeah.
- 53:59Speaker 4: I'm like, like as much as I have like a
- 54:01Speaker 4: enjoyed film, like, I don't like like film insider terms
- 54:06Speaker 4: like stinger.
- 54:06Speaker 3: Like just go on a cable. It's a cable.
- 54:08Speaker 4: Look at it. It's a cable.
- 54:09Speaker 3: It's you know, you plug it, dude, I got two
- 54:11Speaker 3: stingers on the floor here, Yeah, Like come on, really, no,
- 54:14Speaker 3: no forty seven though we do have one clamp We
- 54:18Speaker 3: have a clamp on here?
- 54:19Speaker 4: Wait?
- 54:19Speaker 3: What was it like the.
- 54:22Speaker 4: Like the clothes like you know it's clothes pins when
- 54:26Speaker 4: it comes seven. Yeah, and like I've heard people call
- 54:28Speaker 4: them on bullets and stuff like that, and it's just
- 54:30Speaker 4: kind of like, really, it's just kind of like I'm
- 54:34Speaker 4: sure for some people like hearing, like who've had conversations
- 54:37Speaker 4: with me using wrestling terms? What what is this guy
- 54:39Speaker 4: talking about? Like where this guy sounds really stupid using.
- 54:45Speaker 3: It's kind of like the movie Brick where they just
- 54:46Speaker 3: everyone kind of talks like have you ever seen Bricks?
- 54:49Speaker 3: As Jason Gordon Levin in it? And then everyone talks
- 54:52Speaker 3: like a nineteen twenties gangster, but it's set in modern day, Like,
- 54:55Speaker 3: so what's the story about the dame? It's like it's actually.
- 54:58Speaker 4: Kind of funny but grifted me.
- 55:01Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. Yeah, but we're talking about, you know, pro wrestling.
- 55:07Speaker 3: How did you get involved because I think you said
- 55:08Speaker 3: you said to me your first shoot, your actual first
- 55:10Speaker 3: film introduction of film with a pro wrestling company.
- 55:13Speaker 4: Right, yes, Actually my very first film like shoot period
- 55:17Speaker 4: was with Beyond Wrestling. Actually that's I think I filmed
- 55:22Speaker 4: with them for like a year and a half or so,
- 55:24Speaker 4: and I've actually had the opportunity to film an intergender
- 55:30Speaker 4: match with Sasha Banks before she was Big So, and
- 55:35Speaker 4: the video the match is actually on YouTube. I think
- 55:39Speaker 4: if you just like type in like Sasha Banks Beyond Wrestling,
- 55:43Speaker 4: you'll find this like funny intergender match with her in
- 55:48Speaker 4: it and me standing on a ladder filming it.
- 55:52Speaker 3: I'm want to make sure to find that link to
- 55:53Speaker 3: that in the show notes. Yes, oh, I just kicked
- 55:55Speaker 3: the microphone. Everyone who's warning with that noise was I
- 55:57Speaker 3: just had to kick the microphone.
- 55:58Speaker 4: Yeah. But it's funny because like you know, trying to
- 56:04Speaker 4: figure out how to like get into some of this stuff.
- 56:06Speaker 4: I'm sure for like a lot of people, it's like
- 56:08Speaker 4: absolutely frustrating. It's like like you hear everybody else's story
- 56:12Speaker 4: and you know there's so many like different avenues that
- 56:15Speaker 4: people have got into it. It's not like something that
- 56:17Speaker 4: like like just not like a step by step process
- 56:19Speaker 4: to you know get on you know, become a filmmaker
- 56:22Speaker 4: or you know have a specific title. Like everybody finds
- 56:26Speaker 4: their own way, and thankfully for film you can really
- 56:29Speaker 4: go you can really get into it through like any
- 56:32Speaker 4: means possible. And if you have like a desire to
- 56:35Speaker 4: become like a director or writer or actor or whatever,
- 56:38Speaker 4: you could start at any position and figure out your
- 56:40Speaker 4: way through there. But beyond. It was funny because I always, like,
- 56:46Speaker 4: even when I was a kid, I always hated people
- 56:47Speaker 4: that had connections when I didn't have connections, or they
- 56:50Speaker 4: would like have like a stupid story where like I
- 56:53Speaker 4: went into a supermarket and some person found me, like
- 56:56Speaker 4: you're my next star, and they went to Hollywood and
- 57:00Speaker 4: became big or something stupid, like I had four dollars
- 57:04Speaker 4: in my pocket and I went to California and started
- 57:07Speaker 4: a production of hair and then I became a big star.
- 57:11Speaker 4: That sounds like so unrealistic and funny enough. There was
- 57:16Speaker 4: a gym by me, which I always knew that wrestlers
- 57:20Speaker 4: like in the past, like Jimmy Snook and I think
- 57:23Speaker 4: like ultimate word of like Rowdy Piper have gone to
- 57:26Speaker 4: this gym like whenever they're in the area. It used
- 57:29Speaker 4: to be a Golden gym, and it's been it's it's
- 57:34Speaker 4: gone through different owners over the years, so it's had
- 57:36Speaker 4: several different names. But my dad just got me like
- 57:40Speaker 4: a gym membership there or something like I think yeah,
- 57:42Speaker 4: he was going there too. It's like she get a
- 57:44Speaker 4: gym membership here, it's twenty bucks a month. I'm like,
- 57:47Speaker 4: sounds good enough and funny enough. Like I was wearing
- 57:51Speaker 4: my che Car Pro you know, hoodie, like for a
- 57:56Speaker 4: workout or something, and and at that point in time,
- 57:59Speaker 4: I didn't know if there was any wrestlers still going
- 58:01Speaker 4: to this gym or anything like that, and like I
- 58:03Speaker 4: just didn't even think about that or care. And you
- 58:07Speaker 4: always hear about like guys getting into the business from
- 58:09Speaker 4: going to a gym, and some wrestlers like, hey, you
- 58:12Speaker 4: look like you should be in the business or something
- 58:14Speaker 4: like that. And strangely enough, that kind of happened to me.
- 58:18Speaker 4: Like there was a wrestler, like an independent pro wrestler
- 58:21Speaker 4: at the time, you went by the name of Nick Talon,
- 58:23Speaker 4: and I think he's going under Nicholas k Now And
- 58:27Speaker 4: he saw me wearing the cha Car hoodie and he
- 58:29Speaker 4: thought that I was one of the Chakar wrestlers because
- 58:32Speaker 4: most of them are lutra doors wearing masks and they're
- 58:34Speaker 4: all like super skinny. I didn't have the muscle that
- 58:37Speaker 4: I have now, so he saw me thought like, oh,
- 58:41Speaker 4: this is one of the chakr guys and he's probably
- 58:43Speaker 4: just like here for a workout, and I was like, no,
- 58:46Speaker 4: I'm not. And then we just started like bsing. He realized,
- 58:50Speaker 4: you know, it wasn't like a weirdo or anything like that.
- 58:53Speaker 4: That's the key, that's theirs. If you want to get
- 58:56Speaker 4: into anything, you a certain job or whatever, be weird.
- 59:00Speaker 3: Won't be crazy. Don't be a weird though.
- 59:03Speaker 4: That's the two big Don't breathe heavy over the phone
- 59:05Speaker 4: like that. Be nice. And you know we just had
- 59:10Speaker 4: like just had like a fun chat. And uh, whenever
- 59:13Speaker 4: I was in the gym and he was there, we
- 59:15Speaker 4: would just be yes about wrestling, and you know, he
- 59:18Speaker 4: knew I was interested in getting into film. Another key element.
- 59:22Speaker 4: If you want to get into film, just tell people
- 59:25Speaker 4: that you want to get into film. Eventually you're gonna
- 59:27Speaker 4: find somebody that knows somebody. So this guy, you know,
- 59:29Speaker 4: he would always tell me about Beyond Wrestling and how
- 59:33Speaker 4: unique it was because essentially it was just kind of
- 59:35Speaker 4: like a promotion that didn't have an audience. The audience
- 59:41Speaker 4: was literally just the workers, so it was you know,
- 59:44Speaker 4: wrestlers wrestling for wrestlers, and with the set, with the mindset,
- 59:48Speaker 4: of like this is a good way for guys to
- 59:49Speaker 4: network and excuse me away for for guys to you know,
- 59:55Speaker 4: get feedback from each other because.
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: We'll be right back after a word from our sponsor
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: and now back to the show.
- 1:00:10Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know like the mindset of the locker
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: rooms now, but like I know of in the past,
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: Like you know, you you really have to really be
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: super humble and you know, mind your piece and cues
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: to get feedback, you know, from certain guys. You had
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: to ask the right people and you know, just get
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: to some input on you know, their work, because wrestling
- 1:00:32Speaker 4: is is definitely an art, you know. They even like
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: I've been in the ring, I've run the ropes. Nobody
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: was teaching me how to run the ropes. I just
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: tried to run the ropes on my own, and I'm like, wow,
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: this is like the most unnatural thing ever. Like you
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: just like you just like run towards the ropes and
- 1:00:48Speaker 4: like you know, you have to turn, but it's just
- 1:00:50Speaker 4: like such an awkward movement and like using the ropes
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: for momentum to bounce off and like you know, run
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: the other direction. It's just not natural at all. So
- 1:01:02Speaker 4: you know, just I'm sure for these guys just like
- 1:01:05Speaker 4: just trying to get like their crafts like polished. Cause
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: you know, when you see the stuff like on WWE,
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: like these guys are truly professionals. They make something that's
- 1:01:15Speaker 4: like completely like unnatural, look like so easy. But when
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: and I know you've you've done some you know, pro
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: wrestling school with King Kong Bundy, like just a lot
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: of you know this this you know movements in wrestling.
- 1:01:31Speaker 4: They just like you really have to like work at
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: it hard, you know, falling on your back, falling on
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: your knees, and you know, just just getting slammed and
- 1:01:41Speaker 4: just trying to make it look like as seamless as
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: possible takes a lot of time and effort. And you know,
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: a good friend of mine, Chris Dickinson, who's uh in
- 1:01:51Speaker 4: evolved wrestling kind of like a feeder system for for
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: for at WWE's like performance center. You know he I
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: remember he told me like it took him like I
- 1:02:03Speaker 4: think like three years before he realized like how to
- 1:02:07Speaker 4: make a match. So imagine just like having matches and
- 1:02:11Speaker 4: just like not getting it. So these guys like formed
- 1:02:15Speaker 4: beyond wrestling to you know kind of bridge that gap
- 1:02:18Speaker 4: to get feedback from other guys to you know, network
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: with one another, but also you don't put this stuff
- 1:02:24Speaker 4: on YouTube, you know, for for fantas to see it,
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: which actually ended up like frustrating a lot of fans,
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: like how come you don't have live shows? But initially,
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: you know, he invited me to do camera work, you know,
- 1:02:36Speaker 4: for for Beyond Wrestling, and I'm like, wow, I don't
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: even own a nice camera and I'm going to be
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: filming a wrestling event that's going to be you know,
- 1:02:45Speaker 4: put on YouTube for for people to see. Yeah, so
- 1:02:48Speaker 4: or Sean, you did you feel like oh uh yeah,
- 1:02:51Speaker 4: because you know, since you know, with Independent Pro Wrestling,
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: this was like really like minor league at the time.
- 1:02:59Speaker 4: Like now Beyond Wrestling has like you know really like
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: stack line up, and you know a lot of guys
- 1:03:03Speaker 4: that have a competer for WWE or you know maybe
- 1:03:07Speaker 4: have like some sort of like a contractual deal with
- 1:03:10Speaker 4: WWE that they can appear on like their you know
- 1:03:12Speaker 4: NXT or or the two or five live Cruiserweight show
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: like they're wrestling and Beyond now And initially, like for
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: a lot of these groups, they don't have like a
- 1:03:26Speaker 4: like a nice setup. It's not like this like fancy
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: television production. It's literally like we're gonna give you a
- 1:03:32Speaker 4: camp quarter, all right, we don't know where we're gonna
- 1:03:36Speaker 4: set you up for a steady cam. So we're gonna
- 1:03:39Speaker 4: put you on this ladder or we're gonna put you
- 1:03:41Speaker 4: like high up on this like like I don't even
- 1:03:45Speaker 4: know how which even like termed this thing that they
- 1:03:47Speaker 4: put me on initially, but I was like high up somewhere.
- 1:03:49Speaker 3: The scaffolding or it was it wasn't or something like.
- 1:03:52Speaker 4: An eagle's nest, and I was just like terrified of
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: like falling off of this thing more than like getting
- 1:03:59Speaker 4: a good shot. But apparently I did well, so they
- 1:04:03Speaker 4: had me come back for other events and so that
- 1:04:06Speaker 4: was like my first like taste of film. And it
- 1:04:09Speaker 4: was literally from like it literally happened from like a
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: stupid you know, like man, you know, I wish I
- 1:04:15Speaker 4: was like some guy that you found at the gym,
- 1:04:17Speaker 4: and like it happened to me, like whoa, this actually
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: does happen. So so that's my that's how I got
- 1:04:22Speaker 4: initially started off into film.
- 1:04:24Speaker 3: And see as we sort of take a step back here,
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: you know, you had to fail you know, when you
- 1:04:30Speaker 3: were actually doing this stuff, you had to actually learn
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: how to fail, and you had to learn how to
- 1:04:33Speaker 3: you know, do do it the right way learning running
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: talking about running the ropes, how the unnatural that was,
- 1:04:38Speaker 3: and you basically, you know, you have to learn, you know,
- 1:04:41Speaker 3: this whole new skill, and most of the time you
- 1:04:45Speaker 3: learn by failing, because you know, there's.
- 1:04:47Speaker 4: Not all the stuff that I shot was like great,
- 1:04:49Speaker 4: Like it's like it was like sometime would be like
- 1:04:52Speaker 4: after the fact, like the promoter would be like gut
- 1:04:55Speaker 4: stop like doing like the zoom in thing like they
- 1:04:57Speaker 4: do on WWE, because it doesn't look good for her
- 1:04:59Speaker 4: suff and you know, just getting feedback and not taking
- 1:05:03Speaker 4: it personally, and like, you know, how can I how
- 1:05:07Speaker 4: can I make this better? Like I like my my
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: you know, aim was not to be like a camera
- 1:05:14Speaker 4: guy or anything like that. But at the same time,
- 1:05:16Speaker 4: it's like, okay, well there's gonna be situations where they
- 1:05:18Speaker 4: may need somebody, whether it's beyond or somewhere else, just
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: to press record. Yeah, and you know, just just you know,
- 1:05:27Speaker 4: make things look nice.
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: And just because I have to ask, because again this
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: is filmmaking, what kind of camera did you use or
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: if you're on the film set, it's would you shoot
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: that on? You know, if they're a film festival, you know,
- 1:05:39Speaker 3: if you're at a film festival wherever, and you know
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: the film people, because they're gonna come up to you
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: and say, would you shoot that on?
- 1:05:45Speaker 4: Exactly For the first one, it was, oh my god.
- 1:05:49Speaker 4: It was like literally the promoter like dug out some
- 1:05:52Speaker 4: like old cam corners and like they did have like
- 1:05:56Speaker 4: some HD to them. Well, no, no, they actually they
- 1:05:59Speaker 4: weren't HD. It wasn't until like there was like one
- 1:06:02Speaker 4: wrestler who goes by the name of uh, oh my god,
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: Jarrick two forty or something. I forgot the numbers. Sorry
- 1:06:10Speaker 4: if he's listening, but he he was into film. He
- 1:06:15Speaker 4: was he was doing a lot of editing, and he
- 1:06:18Speaker 4: had like a I think it was like the the
- 1:06:19Speaker 4: rebel he had with him, okay for And that was
- 1:06:21Speaker 4: like for our very first yeah, for our first uh
- 1:06:27Speaker 4: for a first live event with an audience. So we
- 1:06:30Speaker 4: were actually had like by the time we were actually
- 1:06:33Speaker 4: allowing like an audience to come in and you know
- 1:06:35Speaker 4: watch us, you know, do our due, we actually had
- 1:06:38Speaker 4: like HD you know cameras with us. Oh cool, So
- 1:06:41Speaker 4: but the initial like you know, tapings, they were just
- 1:06:44Speaker 4: like some old camp quarders at the promoter dugout or
- 1:06:48Speaker 4: like one of the wrestlers had an extra camera on end.
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: And but that because the show we were talking about,
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: you know, you can't wait, you're ready. You have to
- 1:06:55Speaker 3: just go with what you have. Yeah.
- 1:06:57Speaker 4: Actually I remember, like a earlier in the conversation you
- 1:07:01Speaker 4: mentioned like there's like some people they just we they're
- 1:07:03Speaker 4: waiting for the perfect moment, They're waiting for the for
- 1:07:05Speaker 4: the right thing. I've known people that have like graduated
- 1:07:08Speaker 4: from NYU for filmmaking and they're like, oh, I'm gonna
- 1:07:13Speaker 4: wait to make a film like once I have like
- 1:07:15Speaker 4: the right camera or something like that. Like no, don't
- 1:07:18Speaker 4: don't wait. If you have like a self like, we're
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: at a point now where you can make an amazing
- 1:07:23Speaker 4: film with your cell phone. There's like no excuse for
- 1:07:26Speaker 4: for doing what you want to do.
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: I've had on Sean Baker who made Tangerine, and we
- 1:07:30Speaker 3: talked about how he shot that whole movie with his iPhone. Yeah,
- 1:07:33Speaker 3: and that was a Sunday and Starling, by the way,
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: still my most popular episode ever with Sean Baker. I
- 1:07:40Speaker 3: mean unbelievable numbers because I actually got to interview him
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: before every before just blow up. It was like I
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: didn't even plan this, and it was just serendipitous, that is,
- 1:07:49Speaker 3: all of a sudden, like I did the interview and
- 1:07:52Speaker 3: then here's where he, like all of a sudden, was
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: everywhere and being mis mentioned, so people were looking him up,
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: and it first hit was my podcast, So that's why,
- 1:07:59Speaker 3: all of a sudden, I saw them. And it was
- 1:08:00Speaker 3: kind of like one of those like Scooby Doo cartoons
- 1:08:02Speaker 3: where you're kind of like they rubbed the rids like
- 1:08:04Speaker 3: zoinks and you're like, what the hell, it's awesome, But
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: but yeah, and so you know, he just he you
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: knew what he wanted to do, and uh you know,
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: he wanted to shoot that, but yeah, you know, he can't.
- 1:08:15Speaker 3: He can't wait for the perfect time, you know. And
- 1:08:17Speaker 3: that's what that promotion did. They just they knew what
- 1:08:19Speaker 3: they had and they made it work. And as you know,
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: you mentioned King Kong Bundy, he always talked about the
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: story telling of professional wrestling and the storytelling everything else,
- 1:08:27Speaker 3: and you know, because uh, you know, Bundy says professional
- 1:08:31Speaker 3: wrestle is supposed to mirror a fight. Yeah, and that's
- 1:08:33Speaker 3: why he doesn't get things like the tackle drop down.
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: He doesn't get things like the leap frog.
- 1:08:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: He says, if you're in a fight, why the hell
- 1:08:41Speaker 3: would you be trying to leap frog over somebody. He's like, well,
- 1:08:44Speaker 3: here's the perfect example is this, he goes the other guy,
- 1:08:47Speaker 3: You whip the other guy into the ropes. He comes
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: back at you and trying to gore you like a bull.
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: So you leap frog over him and he goes, He goes,
- 1:08:56Speaker 3: what the hell is the psychology of that? And and
- 1:08:59Speaker 3: you understand, I unders when he what he what he's
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: saying with that, You know, it's it's just a but
- 1:09:03Speaker 3: because I think now with the way wrestling is now,
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: because again, as we were talking about in the pre interview,
- 1:09:07Speaker 3: I have two friends who talk about it all the time,
- 1:09:10Speaker 3: So I got that's where I get it. All lot
- 1:09:11Speaker 3: of information from him. It's like, don't you think that'd
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: be a good podcast? Though, Well, they just they they
- 1:09:15Speaker 3: both deny they watch it, and all of a sudden
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: they're telling talking about it. But yeah, but but uh
- 1:09:20Speaker 3: but yeah, no, no, no, that's that's where h uh. That's
- 1:09:23Speaker 3: what I was just talking about was just that, you know,
- 1:09:26Speaker 3: wrestling now where I think it's a bit different. I think,
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: you know, with how everything's changed.
- 1:09:29Speaker 4: Yeah, I think the the artist storytelling is kind of
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: I don't want to say it's lost. Like these kinds
- 1:09:35Speaker 4: of things is like never really lose them, but they're
- 1:09:39Speaker 4: definitely it deserves to be brought back in like grand
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: form because you know, wrestling, just like film, it's like
- 1:09:46Speaker 4: about memories. You know, there's like some there's been like
- 1:09:50Speaker 4: some great talents over the here. I remember just like offhand,
- 1:09:53Speaker 4: I remember it's like an episode of Cohen O'Brien where
- 1:09:57Speaker 4: he's like talking about Sid Caesar.
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: We'll be right back after a word from our sponsor
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: and now back to the show.
- 1:10:09Speaker 4: And like this amazing comedian from from back in the day,
- 1:10:12Speaker 4: and but he never really did any films, so nobody really,
- 1:10:16Speaker 4: like despite how great his comedy you know was and
- 1:10:20Speaker 4: still is today, like nobody talks about Sid Caesar or
- 1:10:24Speaker 4: his influence on comedy. And but you know, with with
- 1:10:30Speaker 4: wrestling today, you know, without stories, without those moments, you know,
- 1:10:40Speaker 4: there's no like there's nothing for people to like, you know,
- 1:10:43Speaker 4: tell others about like a lot of things that we
- 1:10:46Speaker 4: get sold on, especially with film like somebody tells you
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: about like I saw this movie, you know, like City
- 1:10:53Speaker 4: on Fire, and it's like this happens and it's so
- 1:10:56Speaker 4: like similar to Resident four Dogs. It's like, whoa wait second,
- 1:11:00Speaker 4: he took that movie from that guy and like and
- 1:11:03Speaker 4: you and it just gets you captivated. And if there's
- 1:11:07Speaker 4: no moments, there's no memories, Uh, it's just gonna get
- 1:11:11Speaker 4: you know, hard to you know, sell some of these
- 1:11:14Speaker 4: people down the road.
- 1:11:15Speaker 3: Yeah. It's you know, somebody once told me that that
- 1:11:19Speaker 3: writing a screenplay is really scene writing, Yeah, because you're
- 1:11:22Speaker 3: writing these scenes out and these moments that happen within
- 1:11:25Speaker 3: these scenes are really key. At the movie Casino, I
- 1:11:28Speaker 3: was actually just uh, it was one of my recommended
- 1:11:30Speaker 3: with some of the clips on YouTube were recommended to me,
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: and I started just watching this again. I was like,
- 1:11:34Speaker 3: you know what, uh, fantastic. Just some of these things
- 1:11:38Speaker 3: like you know when when uh Robert Denio and when
- 1:11:43Speaker 3: his wife in the movie, which is Saren Stone, she
- 1:11:45Speaker 3: ends up going back to her pimp boyfriend. Yeah, and
- 1:11:47Speaker 3: that whole scene happens. I mean, it's just stuff like that,
- 1:11:49Speaker 3: you know, and they beat him up back to the
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: outside in the park on all of Robernia's boys, and
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: it's just like, you know, this this movie is so
- 1:11:55Speaker 3: well put together, and it's just these scenes that we
- 1:11:58Speaker 3: can always talk about because I had a friend of
- 1:11:59Speaker 3: mine in high school who would always put on movies
- 1:12:03Speaker 3: and he wanted to show you the best scenes, and
- 1:12:05Speaker 3: I was like, dude, just let me watch the fucking movie,
- 1:12:07Speaker 3: like I don't need to. I don't need to see
- 1:12:09Speaker 3: like because he was trying to show me Don of
- 1:12:11Speaker 3: the Dead as just the best parts like in the
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: ma All. I was like, dude, I just want to
- 1:12:14Speaker 3: see the movie, like I don't need to just show
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: me like that the head explosion you're doing to the
- 1:12:17Speaker 3: dead in the beginning. Yeah, this is the Georgia Merra
- 1:12:20Speaker 3: version by the way, yes not the not the James
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: Gun version, but you know, like where they actually they're
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: going there, they're going through the apartment and the guy
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: blowing the heads off and stuff like that. But it's
- 1:12:29Speaker 3: the moments like that. And we were talking about speaking
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: of the Warrior. You know when in WrestleMania six, when
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: Weird beat Hogan, I mean it's you know, that's someone
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: the leanly yet cleanly.
- 1:12:39Speaker 4: It's just in like that match. Actually, I'm more of
- 1:12:44Speaker 4: a fan of the the career ending match with him
- 1:12:47Speaker 4: and Macho King Randy Savage. And actually, when I knew Warrior,
- 1:12:51Speaker 4: like one of my one of my regrets hit is
- 1:12:54Speaker 4: I didn't get to ask him about that match. It's
- 1:12:57Speaker 4: like classic storytelling for those that have no idea about
- 1:13:01Speaker 4: wrestling or that match in particular. You know, it's just
- 1:13:04Speaker 4: like a heated feud between the Macho Man and the
- 1:13:06Speaker 4: Ultimate Warrior to a point where whoever loses the match
- 1:13:10Speaker 4: loses their career. And it's like at the point of
- 1:13:14Speaker 4: like this blood feud between these two guys, they hate
- 1:13:16Speaker 4: each other so much, and you know, this was like
- 1:13:21Speaker 4: a unique match, you know at the time, like they
- 1:13:24Speaker 4: got over how much they hated each other in a
- 1:13:29Speaker 4: sense that like their demeanors completely change from what they
- 1:13:33Speaker 4: how their fights were normally, and Ultimate Warriors usually usually
- 1:13:36Speaker 4: would jet down the ring. For this one, he walked
- 1:13:39Speaker 4: down the ring. He was focused, you know on Macho
- 1:13:42Speaker 4: Man as opponent, Like he wasn't even going to slip up.
- 1:13:46Speaker 4: Both of these guys like performed each other's finishing moves
- 1:13:50Speaker 4: like multiple times, which was like in the past, like
- 1:13:52Speaker 4: you would never see a guy like hit their finishing
- 1:13:54Speaker 4: move more than once, Like none of these guys who
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: were laying down for the other. There's even a point
- 1:13:59Speaker 4: where Aultimate Warriors like second guessing. He's already got Macho
- 1:14:03Speaker 4: Man down on the floor and he's second guessing, you know,
- 1:14:05Speaker 4: should I continue. He's like questioning his fate in professional wrestling,
- 1:14:10Speaker 4: and he decides, you know, he's speaking to the gods
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: and like he comes back in the ring and then
- 1:14:16Speaker 4: just just destroys Macho Man and pins him with one
- 1:14:19Speaker 4: foot on his chest, and it's like, whoa, what the
- 1:14:24Speaker 4: hell just happened? And then if you know anything about wrestling,
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: you know, at that time, the Macho Man was separated
- 1:14:31Speaker 4: from Miss Elizabeth, like they you know, there was like
- 1:14:33Speaker 4: the whole feud with Hulk Hogan and and Miss Elizabeth
- 1:14:38Speaker 4: was torn. So she was accused by the Matro Man.
- 1:14:42Speaker 4: You know that Hulk Hogan was lusting after her, so
- 1:14:44Speaker 4: she split up from the Macho Man, and she finally
- 1:14:48Speaker 4: returns to the Macho Man at that WrestleMania after like
- 1:14:53Speaker 4: this like epic loss to the Ultimate Warriors. So you
- 1:14:57Speaker 4: had like your love story. You had like this intense
- 1:15:01Speaker 4: battle between two guys like who was going to win?
- 1:15:04Speaker 4: It wasn't like an easy thing to you know, predict
- 1:15:07Speaker 4: Like some people could just watch wrestling now like that
- 1:15:09Speaker 4: guy's gonna win because he's popular, but this was like
- 1:15:11Speaker 4: completely unpredictable. It was like there's like so many different
- 1:15:16Speaker 4: dynamics going on with this match. And I always wanted
- 1:15:18Speaker 4: to ask him, like what the hell was like what
- 1:15:21Speaker 4: was it like for you in macho man like figuring
- 1:15:23Speaker 4: this match out? And unfortunately I didn't.
- 1:15:28Speaker 3: So how did you meet the Ultimate Warrior?
- 1:15:30Speaker 4: He was doing these inspirational videos on YouTube and you know,
- 1:15:36Speaker 4: I called win to them. And you know, Warrior has
- 1:15:40Speaker 4: been always like these like fascinating personalities and professional wrestling
- 1:15:44Speaker 4: where it's like basically a comic book character come to life.
- 1:15:49Speaker 4: And you know, there's always like a big, you know
- 1:15:52Speaker 4: feud between me and my friends, like who's the better wrestler,
- 1:15:54Speaker 4: Warrior a Hulk Cogan. I was always a hull coking guy,
- 1:15:57Speaker 4: but I love the Warrior, and just being wrestling fan
- 1:16:00Speaker 4: that I am, I'm always curious what these guys are
- 1:16:02Speaker 4: up to when they're not wrestling, and Warrior was doing
- 1:16:07Speaker 4: like these these like intense, over the top motivational videos
- 1:16:12Speaker 4: on YouTube, and you know, being the open minded guy
- 1:16:15Speaker 4: that I am, you know, I think a lot of
- 1:16:17Speaker 4: people when they see these videos, they're like, oh, he's
- 1:16:19Speaker 4: in character, he's an idiot, he's just screaming. But I
- 1:16:22Speaker 4: was like, you know, I'm gonna pay attention to what
- 1:16:24Speaker 4: he's saying. And you know, some of the stuff was
- 1:16:27Speaker 4: just like so like just like well said, well put,
- 1:16:32Speaker 4: and you know, despite him almost kind of being in character,
- 1:16:37Speaker 4: and it seemed like that, you know, this man has
- 1:16:40Speaker 4: like significantly matured, you know, from his time in professional wrestling,
- 1:16:44Speaker 4: you know, from the the raving lunatic to you know
- 1:16:47Speaker 4: this with this well read you know guy and who
- 1:16:53Speaker 4: you know hadn't been wrestling in some time. You know,
- 1:16:56Speaker 4: he's aged significantly. You know, he's got the gray hair,
- 1:17:00Speaker 4: but he still like had like this amazing body. You know,
- 1:17:04Speaker 4: not to go back to the to the movie we
- 1:17:06Speaker 4: were talking about earlier, but.
- 1:17:08Speaker 3: He was shirtless a lot.
- 1:17:09Speaker 4: Yeah it uh he should. This guy had like discipline
- 1:17:13Speaker 4: in life. Yeah, and uh these you know, I would
- 1:17:16Speaker 4: just like watch these videos over and over again, and
- 1:17:20Speaker 4: you know, me and my other friends would like share
- 1:17:22Speaker 4: them and like like WHOA some great stuff, and you
- 1:17:26Speaker 4: know some of the people that you know, I was
- 1:17:27Speaker 4: friends with, even some of the film people, I'm like,
- 1:17:30Speaker 4: you got to listen to these videos. They're incredible, and
- 1:17:34Speaker 4: some of them would be like, oh, you know, he's screaming,
- 1:17:36Speaker 4: he's an idiot, and I'm like, no, listen to what
- 1:17:38Speaker 4: he's saying. And even they would like eventually like turn
- 1:17:43Speaker 4: there's like some people I've like, I turned them into
- 1:17:45Speaker 4: MP three's and gave them out as like CDs for
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: people to listen to in their cars. And there's like
- 1:17:50Speaker 4: a few of my friends who like those things have
- 1:17:54Speaker 4: not left their cars and wherever they've like moved to,
- 1:17:57Speaker 4: like that seedy goes along with them. And then there
- 1:18:00Speaker 4: was just like one day he posted a new video
- 1:18:03Speaker 4: saying he was doing an autograph signing New Jersey and
- 1:18:07Speaker 4: he was thinking about doing some filming at that time
- 1:18:11Speaker 4: on YouTube. There were two TV shows that he put out.
- 1:18:15Speaker 4: They were they were there were pilots that it was
- 1:18:19Speaker 4: clear that they weren't going to be like aired on
- 1:18:21Speaker 4: any television network, and called The Warrior Show and basically
- 1:18:25Speaker 4: it was Ultimate Warrior taking like these scream o bands
- 1:18:29Speaker 4: to a gym and taking like these like.
- 1:18:32Speaker 3: Yeah, because the first band was like something Alexandretta or I.
- 1:18:35Speaker 4: Have forgot the names. I haven't seen it so in
- 1:18:38Speaker 4: so long, but it was just kind of like after
- 1:18:41Speaker 4: seeing the motivational videos and you're and like, I'm not
- 1:18:44Speaker 4: a big scream O fan, so I'm like, oh my god,
- 1:18:46Speaker 4: I can't wait to see these guys like you know,
- 1:18:48Speaker 4: get taken to task at the gym and have them
- 1:18:51Speaker 4: to see them puke and all this other kind of stuff.
- 1:18:53Speaker 4: And and I watched the show. He had him like
- 1:19:00Speaker 4: he put him through the wringer, had him like do
- 1:19:02Speaker 4: some crazy stuff, but you know, turned it around and
- 1:19:05Speaker 4: like and uh, for you know this guy who's a celebrity,
- 1:19:09Speaker 4: and you know, like for the food you ordered, you know,
- 1:19:11Speaker 4: you weren't a Ultimate Warrior shirt. Now like when the
- 1:19:14Speaker 4: guy delivered the food, he's like, Hey, that's the Ultimate Warrior,
- 1:19:16Speaker 4: isn't it.
- 1:19:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:19:17Speaker 4: And I thought it was interesting on the show he
- 1:19:20Speaker 4: didn't assume that anyone knew who he was. And I
- 1:19:23Speaker 4: one of the things that kind of like endeared me
- 1:19:25Speaker 4: even more to him. He's like, I know, you guys
- 1:19:28Speaker 4: looking at me like wondering who the hell is this guy?
- 1:19:30Speaker 4: And all this kind of stuff. And then he starts
- 1:19:31Speaker 4: explaining who he is and you know why he you know,
- 1:19:36Speaker 4: you know, put him through the task that he did,
- 1:19:39Speaker 4: like all these different like workouts, excruciating workouts and just
- 1:19:42Speaker 4: to you know, get them to really physically feel like,
- 1:19:46Speaker 4: you know, like you have some like power in you,
- 1:19:49Speaker 4: not just to like be some like crappy scream o bands,
- 1:19:53Speaker 4: you know, getting trashed on Rose.
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: We'll be right back after a word from our sponsor
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: and now back to the show.
- 1:20:05Speaker 4: And you know, doing you know nothing with your life.
- 1:20:08Speaker 4: You know, like you he's getting it through to them, like, hey,
- 1:20:10Speaker 4: you have like an incredible opportunity that you know, your band,
- 1:20:14Speaker 4: you can get your messages heard across to like so
- 1:20:16Speaker 4: many different people. You can use this platform for something grander.
- 1:20:20Speaker 4: And when I saw this YouTube video of him announcing
- 1:20:24Speaker 4: that he was going to do filmings, I was like,
- 1:20:27Speaker 4: I have a feeling it's gonna be something like this,
- 1:20:31Speaker 4: but I want to badly do it. And it was
- 1:20:35Speaker 4: funny because initially we were told like we were not
- 1:20:38Speaker 4: going to be told what the format of the show
- 1:20:40Speaker 4: is going to be. If you're interested, he had a
- 1:20:45Speaker 4: several page like application that you had to fill out
- 1:20:48Speaker 4: and you had to do your own video to send
- 1:20:50Speaker 4: to him. So I was like, oh my god, I
- 1:20:52Speaker 4: don't want to film myself.
- 1:20:54Speaker 3: And what was the application? Like what were some of
- 1:20:56Speaker 3: the things on there? Like was really like personal questions
- 1:20:59Speaker 3: or they.
- 1:21:00Speaker 4: Were kind of like not two super personal questions, but
- 1:21:02Speaker 4: you know, like asking like what did you like what
- 1:21:04Speaker 4: do you do for for work? You know, what what
- 1:21:07Speaker 4: motivates you do you work out? Like you know, like
- 1:21:11Speaker 4: basically questions asking like how you know mentally physically spiritually,
- 1:21:17Speaker 4: how do you like, you know, hold yourself, how do
- 1:21:20Speaker 4: you like handle yourself and all that. So it wasn't
- 1:21:23Speaker 4: like this like weird like questionnaire of all these weird questions.
- 1:21:28Speaker 4: It was actually pretty uh you know, something like an
- 1:21:31Speaker 4: introspective kind of like you know, form to fill out.
- 1:21:37Speaker 4: So when I was filling it out, and there was stuff,
- 1:21:40Speaker 4: a lot of stuff I like, you know, think about
- 1:21:42Speaker 4: it on a regular basis, but now I was actually
- 1:21:43Speaker 4: writing it to someone else. I was writing it to
- 1:21:46Speaker 4: a childhood hero and did the video. Was like scared
- 1:21:52Speaker 4: of shit to do that, and I think like about like, uh,
- 1:21:59Speaker 4: since I badly want to get on the show, I
- 1:22:02Speaker 4: just did my best to completely forget that. I even
- 1:22:05Speaker 4: like submitted it. I didn't want to think about it,
- 1:22:07Speaker 4: was not going to obsess about it. Nothing. And I
- 1:22:10Speaker 4: think I heard back from like two weeks later or
- 1:22:12Speaker 4: a week No, no, it was a week later. Did
- 1:22:14Speaker 4: he call you? No? His management called me, okay, and
- 1:22:18Speaker 4: they're like, oh, you know, we're interested in having you
- 1:22:20Speaker 4: on the show. And I was like, I they left
- 1:22:24Speaker 4: the voicemail and I immediately called him back and we were,
- 1:22:29Speaker 4: you know, later given like I don't want to say,
- 1:22:33Speaker 4: like vague instructions, but they were not, like they didn't
- 1:22:35Speaker 4: give us the format of the show, what it was
- 1:22:36Speaker 4: going to be. They just said once you meet, all
- 1:22:40Speaker 4: meet at this hotel in I think it was Woodbridge,
- 1:22:45Speaker 4: New Jersey at four am. And I'm like, okay, this
- 1:22:49Speaker 4: sounds like the ultimate worker. So we all got there. Actually,
- 1:22:54Speaker 4: I was so I knew he was going to have
- 1:22:57Speaker 4: us like workout and I knew that was going to
- 1:23:02Speaker 4: be the case. And I was so hyped up. I
- 1:23:05Speaker 4: was still I was. I was like, Okay, they're not
- 1:23:08Speaker 4: giving us the format of the show. Let me just
- 1:23:10Speaker 4: come in regular clothes, but bring Jim clothes with me.
- 1:23:13Speaker 4: I was so hyped I completely forgot to bring my
- 1:23:15Speaker 4: gym clothes. And I just showed up like wearing like
- 1:23:18Speaker 4: skinny jeans and Converse and my Charles Bronson shirt. And
- 1:23:22Speaker 4: I was like and once I got there saw everyone
- 1:23:25Speaker 4: else in Jim clothes, I'm like, ah, I'm fucked. And
- 1:23:30Speaker 4: he met with us there and it was funny because
- 1:23:34Speaker 4: it was just a spot that they picked. Warrior was
- 1:23:37Speaker 4: not staying there. He showed up in a car like,
- 1:23:40Speaker 4: you know, I think at like four or something like
- 1:23:42Speaker 4: that and basically told, you know, they gave us the deal, like, hey,
- 1:23:47Speaker 4: you guys are going to take a five mile walk
- 1:23:50Speaker 4: to the underground Strength Gym in Edison, New Jersey. And
- 1:23:55Speaker 4: I was like five miles all right, and for a
- 1:23:58Speaker 4: long day. And the camera crew didn't show up. Meanwhile,
- 1:24:02Speaker 4: you know, really camera crew didn't show up. Warrior was
- 1:24:06Speaker 4: there as manager was there, and you know, Warrior at
- 1:24:11Speaker 4: first just you know, acting normal. He said how it
- 1:24:13Speaker 4: was shook our hands, stuff like that. And once it
- 1:24:16Speaker 4: was clear that the camera crew wasn't there, keep in mind,
- 1:24:19Speaker 4: like I said, you know, this is not a hotel
- 1:24:21Speaker 4: that anyone was staying at. It was just a spot
- 1:24:23Speaker 4: that they picked for all of us to be there
- 1:24:26Speaker 4: and he's like, oh, Steve, you know, his manager brow
- 1:24:29Speaker 4: him into the hotel. Meanwhile, we're outside screamed at this
- 1:24:34Speaker 4: guy and he was like he was going into full
- 1:24:38Speaker 4: Ultimate Warrior mode. And I'm like, oh my god, it's
- 1:24:40Speaker 4: so awesome. Even though he's just like screaming at this guy.
- 1:24:43Speaker 4: And like I said, this was not a hotel anyone
- 1:24:46Speaker 4: was staying at. So there's somebody working at the table
- 1:24:49Speaker 4: in the lobby, there's no one else there. It's just
- 1:24:52Speaker 4: the Ultimate Warrior screaming at like some guy in a
- 1:24:55Speaker 4: hotel lobby. Where the hell is the crew? And it's
- 1:24:59Speaker 4: like at the same time, I was like wow, like
- 1:25:03Speaker 4: he's just like he's just like the character and hm.
- 1:25:07Speaker 4: I also at the same time like, okay, this is
- 1:25:09Speaker 4: also what we're going to be like who we're gonna
- 1:25:12Speaker 4: be dealing with for the rest of the day. And
- 1:25:17Speaker 4: my god, Like that was just kind of like, uh,
- 1:25:19Speaker 4: it seemed like an endless workout. I think from start
- 1:25:22Speaker 4: to finish it was like over four hours and he
- 1:25:25Speaker 4: had us. I was doing stuff that I'd never done before,
- 1:25:29Speaker 4: like sandbag carries. At that point, I wasn't even like
- 1:25:33Speaker 4: strong enough to like lift this thing on my shoulders
- 1:25:35Speaker 4: had to have someone help me with it, and.
- 1:25:38Speaker 3: Did the Warrior like was he watching as you were
- 1:25:40Speaker 3: like somebody had to help? Yeah, he was like was
- 1:25:41Speaker 3: he there going? Was he just like kind of like
- 1:25:43Speaker 3: sitting there just No.
- 1:25:44Speaker 4: He was encouraging people to team up and help one another.
- 1:25:47Speaker 4: So it was kind of like a team activity. And
- 1:25:50Speaker 4: and it was just one of like those like hottest
- 1:25:53Speaker 4: days of the summer. And we had to go from
- 1:25:56Speaker 4: from the gym and walk these like sandbags to a dumpster.
- 1:26:00Speaker 4: It's a parking lot that was nearby, and we had
- 1:26:03Speaker 4: to walk back and we did things like that again
- 1:26:07Speaker 4: like I'd never done before, like tire flips, flipping like
- 1:26:09Speaker 4: two hundred pounds plus tires and trying to think it's
- 1:26:14Speaker 4: like some of the other stuff. It was just like
- 1:26:16Speaker 4: really it was just like a really like intense like
- 1:26:20Speaker 4: I think once we got through the gym, it was
- 1:26:21Speaker 4: just like a two plus hour workout, and you know,
- 1:26:26Speaker 4: with the purpose of just like seeing like, hey, we're
- 1:26:28Speaker 4: more capable. You know, we're capable of things that we're
- 1:26:32Speaker 4: that we're not even aware of, cause the fact that
- 1:26:35Speaker 4: you know, you at the physical you know state that
- 1:26:39Speaker 4: I in a mental state that I was in at
- 1:26:41Speaker 4: that time doing the stuff that I did that day
- 1:26:44Speaker 4: was like whoa, Like, I couldn't believe that I even
- 1:26:47Speaker 4: did that. But the thing that I remember the most
- 1:26:51Speaker 4: from from that experience was at the very end of
- 1:26:55Speaker 4: the workout, and this is where the skinny jeans came
- 1:26:57Speaker 4: into play. It came into a big benefit for me.
- 1:27:00Speaker 4: He had us crawl on the parking lot floor with
- 1:27:03Speaker 4: chains around our neck, forty five pound chains on our
- 1:27:06Speaker 4: neck from one end to another, and then at the
- 1:27:09Speaker 4: end of it, he was like, if you don't follow
- 1:27:11Speaker 4: your dreams, this is basically what you're doing to yourself.
- 1:27:14Speaker 4: And there were guys after that. We were all talking
- 1:27:17Speaker 4: to one another for weeks. They were pulling out like
- 1:27:19Speaker 4: glass from their knees because they were wearing shorts and
- 1:27:23Speaker 4: I was wearing I was wearing skinny jeans, so I
- 1:27:24Speaker 4: didn't have to worry about that, Jesus, But it was,
- 1:27:27Speaker 4: it was. It was a very incredibly memorable experience. And
- 1:27:33Speaker 4: you know, uh, you know, I still go to the
- 1:27:35Speaker 4: Underground Strength Gym and Zach and I and we always
- 1:27:40Speaker 4: like talk about like that day constantly.
- 1:27:43Speaker 3: Well, you know, it's funny because we were talking. I've
- 1:27:44Speaker 3: actually like I don't know no Zach, but I've actually
- 1:27:48Speaker 3: emailed him back and forth. I bought a program from him,
- 1:27:50Speaker 3: like a couple maybe a year or two, made a
- 1:27:51Speaker 3: couple while ago. But yeah, I know who he is.
- 1:27:55Speaker 3: And uh so, uh yeah, shout out to Zach. Ever
- 1:27:59Speaker 3: issue of.
- 1:28:00Speaker 4: Zach Evanesh's got his own podcast, the Strong Life Podcast,
- 1:28:03Speaker 4: which could download on iTunes.
- 1:28:05Speaker 3: Yes here, don't advertise other people's No, I'm just kidding.
- 1:28:08Speaker 3: I no know. I I hope Cully promote Zach. Yeah,
- 1:28:11Speaker 3: but yeah, it's I'll obviously link to all that in
- 1:28:14Speaker 3: the show notes as well. And uh, you know, it's
- 1:28:16Speaker 3: been a Zack's a great guy. And uh just going
- 1:28:18Speaker 3: back to what Warri were talking with, what you were
- 1:28:20Speaker 3: talking with Warrior when he said to you, when you're
- 1:28:23Speaker 3: not following your dreams, this is what you're doing yourself
- 1:28:26Speaker 3: like all the time, you know, did to a lot
- 1:28:28Speaker 3: of people at that at that finally have that aha
- 1:28:31Speaker 3: moment like holy shit, like.
- 1:28:34Speaker 4: I can't speak for for everyone, and uh, you know,
- 1:28:37Speaker 4: like some of these some of these kind of experiences,
- 1:28:40Speaker 4: you know, once you have them, like I feel like
- 1:28:44Speaker 4: it's a real like you know process too, to really
- 1:28:49Speaker 4: like understand like the things that you go through. And
- 1:28:53Speaker 4: I think for a lot of guys, including myself, you know,
- 1:28:55Speaker 4: we're still learning, you know, from that from that day,
- 1:29:00Speaker 4: you know, I could, you know, just speaking for myself,
- 1:29:02Speaker 4: I can tell you I've like greatly matured, uh you know,
- 1:29:05Speaker 4: from how I you know, talk to people, how I
- 1:29:08Speaker 4: treat them and stuff, and you know how I you know,
- 1:29:12Speaker 4: pursue my own dreams. It's not like the hardest, it's
- 1:29:14Speaker 4: not the easiest thing to to do what you want.
- 1:29:17Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:29:17Speaker 4: I feel like the mind is like the greatest uh
- 1:29:20Speaker 4: you know, barrier too, just to living. You know, I
- 1:29:25Speaker 4: forgot that Muhammadli quote. Is you know, it's not like
- 1:29:28Speaker 4: the biggest mountain that's in your way. It's like the
- 1:29:30Speaker 4: pebble in your shoe. Oh yeah, yeah, you know, it's
- 1:29:34Speaker 4: just like that, just like some of the mental chatter,
- 1:29:36Speaker 4: you know, it's like really like the hardest stuff to overcome.
- 1:29:39Speaker 4: And uh, you know, you know, going through that experience
- 1:29:43Speaker 4: with him, you know, I'm still like you know, learning
- 1:29:45Speaker 4: and still reminding myself like hey, you know, it's really
- 1:29:50Speaker 4: just as simple as just doing what you want. If
- 1:29:53Speaker 4: you don't know how you know, if you don't know
- 1:29:55Speaker 4: the first step, just just do whatever you can do
- 1:29:58Speaker 4: what you know.
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: We'll be right back after a word from our sponsor,
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: and now back to the show.
- 1:30:10Speaker 4: Talk to whoever you got to talk to, like like
- 1:30:13Speaker 4: some of the people I mentioned you know previously, and
- 1:30:16Speaker 4: I'm sure you do the same with with your podcast,
- 1:30:18Speaker 4: like getting guests to like, you know, James Altatuer. I'm
- 1:30:21Speaker 4: sure he's not an easy guy to get, but you
- 1:30:23Speaker 4: persisted and you continued.
- 1:30:25Speaker 3: Yeah it was I did talk to his girlfriend a lot. Yeah.
- 1:30:28Speaker 3: That that's a tip from from from me to you,
- 1:30:31Speaker 3: is uh, whatever you have a tough guest, always go
- 1:30:33Speaker 3: to the wife, girlfriend, whatever. Yeah, that's always a good
- 1:30:36Speaker 3: way in. And then sure enough I was able to sort.
- 1:30:40Speaker 4: Of you know, yeah, so you know, she she went
- 1:30:42Speaker 4: me in the right direction exactly. It's it's really just
- 1:30:48Speaker 4: like you know, even with the film festival, like when
- 1:30:50Speaker 4: I first started going to the New York Nation film festivals,
- 1:30:53Speaker 4: like how do I you know, volunteer. I remember my
- 1:30:56Speaker 4: very first day volunteering. I was actually coming off of
- 1:30:59Speaker 4: the Kitchen Nightmare set. I was working with them, and
- 1:31:03Speaker 4: how was it work?
- 1:31:04Speaker 3: Kitchen Nightmares, by the way, it.
- 1:31:05Speaker 4: Was a nightmare. I I didn't I didn't see Gordon
- 1:31:09Speaker 4: Ramsay once. Actually I was just like happy as like
- 1:31:12Speaker 4: a pig and shit to be like on the set, yeah,
- 1:31:15Speaker 4: because that was a big deal for me and actually
- 1:31:19Speaker 4: funny enough, Like you know, I never was like into
- 1:31:22Speaker 4: like cleaning my house or cleaning in general. I didn't
- 1:31:27Speaker 4: even know how to paint, and actually being on that set,
- 1:31:29Speaker 4: I learned how to do all that stuff. I actually
- 1:31:32Speaker 4: like paint, like you know, it was all about like renovating,
- 1:31:35Speaker 4: like uh, you know these different restaurants that were just
- 1:31:39Speaker 4: like pieces of crap. Yeah, and uh, you know, I
- 1:31:42Speaker 4: actually working on kitchen nightmares. I learned how to paint
- 1:31:46Speaker 4: so well.
- 1:31:47Speaker 3: You know, you know, somebody once told me that like
- 1:31:49Speaker 3: shows like that in bar Rescue, that the way they
- 1:31:51Speaker 3: choose a restaurants are the restaurants are hanging on by
- 1:31:55Speaker 3: like a thread. Yeah, And basically what happens is there's
- 1:31:58Speaker 3: already gonna be like conflict there, so the producers don't
- 1:32:01Speaker 3: have to basically add anything. So basically, you know, the
- 1:32:04Speaker 3: criteria is hey is hanging on by a thread, which
- 1:32:07Speaker 3: means something is desperately wrong anyway, because because good restaurants
- 1:32:11Speaker 3: even if they even if place looks like crap, if
- 1:32:13Speaker 3: they have good food, people will come in. As people
- 1:32:17Speaker 3: have told me, the best pizza places are the ones
- 1:32:19Speaker 3: that look like the ship outside. You're going to go
- 1:32:21Speaker 3: in there. It looks like ship outside. You go in there,
- 1:32:23Speaker 3: it's like the best pizza.
- 1:32:25Speaker 4: Yeah, they got the chindlier and you're like champagne cola.
- 1:32:28Speaker 3: Yeah, you're like, what the hell like with a pizza's banging?
- 1:32:31Speaker 4: Uh?
- 1:32:31Speaker 3: But but but and you know, there's usually some some
- 1:32:35Speaker 3: some issues there with the food. Some people were just
- 1:32:37Speaker 3: in complete denial. Uh, the place is falling apart. And
- 1:32:41Speaker 3: then there's the people that don't want to admit to
- 1:32:42Speaker 3: their mistakes exactly. And also because somebody once told me
- 1:32:46Speaker 3: to about this, I just find this stuff fascinating. I
- 1:32:50Speaker 3: don't want to take too much time with you. But
- 1:32:51Speaker 3: it's like the other thing is is that if if
- 1:32:54Speaker 3: they were going to go under the anyone who's at
- 1:33:00Speaker 3: some like business Ackerman say something like, Okay, look, I
- 1:33:03Speaker 3: don't want to throw good money after bad. So here's
- 1:33:05Speaker 3: what we're gonna do. When the lease is up in
- 1:33:06Speaker 3: maybe a year from now. I'm gonna just focus on
- 1:33:08Speaker 3: just making as much money as I can for the business,
- 1:33:11Speaker 3: and then when that year's up, I'll maybe break even.
- 1:33:13Speaker 3: I mean I'll lose it less, but I could still
- 1:33:15Speaker 3: get out and I won't be losing my shirt, you know.
- 1:33:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:33:17Speaker 3: Whatever those businesses that are like in the real like
- 1:33:21Speaker 3: bottom one percent or bottom whatever that appear on stuff
- 1:33:23Speaker 3: like bar Rescue and Kitchen Nightmares, they are so far
- 1:33:27Speaker 3: gone that it's like they are literally hanging by a thread.
- 1:33:30Speaker 3: So everything is just like pandemonium when you go there.
- 1:33:33Speaker 4: Yeah, actually it's like pandemonium on set. I remember one
- 1:33:37Speaker 4: of my like craziest moments was they were like, we
- 1:33:40Speaker 4: need a waffle maker for the next scene. We need
- 1:33:43Speaker 4: you to go to Walmart and get this specific waffle maker.
- 1:33:46Speaker 4: I'm like, I got it and drove like a madman
- 1:33:51Speaker 4: to get this waffle maker. I drove back, drove down
- 1:33:54Speaker 4: a one way street the wrong way to get him
- 1:33:57Speaker 4: this waffle maker. And then like when the show finally aired,
- 1:34:00Speaker 4: like that scene wasn't even in there, so I was
- 1:34:02Speaker 4: I was waiting for that waffle maker scene. I'm like,
- 1:34:05Speaker 4: you know, I went through hell to get that waffle maker,
- 1:34:08Speaker 4: and they didn't even have the dignity just show one
- 1:34:10Speaker 4: Waffle or the maker on the episode.
- 1:34:13Speaker 3: It's got Those editors are brutal.
- 1:34:15Speaker 4: Man.
- 1:34:15Speaker 3: They slaughter, They slaughter without a man. So, you know,
- 1:34:20Speaker 3: as we sort of talked about all these things, you know,
- 1:34:22Speaker 3: meeting the Warrior and everything else, you know, you mentioned
- 1:34:24Speaker 3: you got burned out from doing a lot of this
- 1:34:25Speaker 3: stuff all the film, and so did I. And that's
- 1:34:28Speaker 3: what we actually bonded us because we're like, look, we've
- 1:34:30Speaker 3: had tony batt experiences. It's time to sort of see
- 1:34:33Speaker 3: you on down the road. Yeah, you and I finally
- 1:34:36Speaker 3: we're talking again, and we're saying, hey, listen, you know
- 1:34:38Speaker 3: it's been a while since, you know, we each have
- 1:34:40Speaker 3: done something. You know, you and I've ever worked together,
- 1:34:43Speaker 3: but you know, we each you know, we ended up
- 1:34:45Speaker 3: taking day jobs, you with various companies, me with various
- 1:34:48Speaker 3: companies because you just got burned out. So I wanted
- 1:34:53Speaker 3: to ask you and and you know, free Fiel, you know,
- 1:34:56Speaker 3: feel free to talk for as much as little as
- 1:34:58Speaker 3: you want, YEA. So I know, you know, you know,
- 1:35:00Speaker 3: maybe some stories that you don't want to talk about,
- 1:35:02Speaker 3: but you know, what are some of the things that
- 1:35:04Speaker 3: happened to you that sort of burns you out? I
- 1:35:06Speaker 3: won't even go into it because everyone who listen to
- 1:35:08Speaker 3: this podcast already knows the other price in there going.
- 1:35:10Speaker 3: Oh Jesus Christ, don't let Dave talk anymore about that.
- 1:35:12Speaker 4: Yeah, the other Dave talks exactly.
- 1:35:14Speaker 3: Let the other Dave talk.
- 1:35:15Speaker 4: Oh my god. It's like, and you know, this is
- 1:35:19Speaker 4: just like a process that everyone goes through. You know,
- 1:35:21Speaker 4: when you first start out, like you're so eager, you're
- 1:35:23Speaker 4: willing to do anything, and you know, to a degree,
- 1:35:26Speaker 4: I'm still willing to do whatever, like as long as
- 1:35:28Speaker 4: I feel like there's going to be some sort of
- 1:35:30Speaker 4: benefit out of it. Just after a while, Like the
- 1:35:35Speaker 4: number one thing that really just like troubled me the most.
- 1:35:38Speaker 4: I think it's like a tiebreaker. One just dealing with
- 1:35:42Speaker 4: people that have no idea what the hell are doing
- 1:35:44Speaker 4: and they're not willing to you know, learn, you know,
- 1:35:48Speaker 4: to advance. And two people that just get so emotionally
- 1:35:54Speaker 4: you know, tied up you know, on set, like I've
- 1:35:58Speaker 4: you know, I'm a pretty humble guy. Like you know,
- 1:36:01Speaker 4: I don't have to be like the director, writer, actor, producer.
- 1:36:04Speaker 4: I don't have to be the Ed Wood for every
- 1:36:05Speaker 4: movie everything that I do. So you know, there's times
- 1:36:09Speaker 4: where I'm willing to you know, pa, I'm willing to
- 1:36:11Speaker 4: do anything, like as long as it seems fun. Hopefully
- 1:36:13Speaker 4: I'll get a pay day out of it, you know.
- 1:36:16Speaker 4: But you know, just just like going through like some
- 1:36:19Speaker 4: of the ridiculous like things like I've had to like
- 1:36:23Speaker 4: go to court appearances because people didn't you know, clear
- 1:36:27Speaker 4: a certain location and then somebody saw us filming there
- 1:36:30Speaker 4: and you know we would get you know, someone says
- 1:36:32Speaker 4: to court and really, yes, damn yeah, Like it was
- 1:36:35Speaker 4: just weird. I thought everything was taken care of, but
- 1:36:39Speaker 4: it wasn't, and I had to show up in court
- 1:36:41Speaker 4: thankfully was dismissed. But you know, it's just like stuff
- 1:36:44Speaker 4: like that when people just like don't think out like
- 1:36:48Speaker 4: the process and too like they even if like they're
- 1:36:53Speaker 4: friends with, you know, the people that they work with,
- 1:36:54Speaker 4: like they you know, don't they don't think of all
- 1:36:59Speaker 4: the steps. You know, a lot of you know, some
- 1:37:02Speaker 4: of these situations are forgivable, but there's like sometimes where
- 1:37:05Speaker 4: I've had like people freak out on me for for
- 1:37:09Speaker 4: stuff that made no sense. Like there was like specifically
- 1:37:13Speaker 4: I had a set that I was on where I
- 1:37:16Speaker 4: was sent to go get some props I had them.
- 1:37:20Speaker 4: I was ready to walk out. I got a call
- 1:37:23Speaker 4: like we need you to go to CVS to get
- 1:37:25Speaker 4: stand lotion. I'm like, all right, I'm on it. They're
- 1:37:28Speaker 4: handing me the receipt. I'm gonna walk right out. They're like, no,
- 1:37:31Speaker 4: I need you to leave right now. Like I'm about
- 1:37:35Speaker 4: to leave in like a minute, Like no, no, you
- 1:37:36Speaker 4: have to leave now. I'm like this makes no sense.
- 1:37:39Speaker 4: And like it's situations like that where I learned to
- 1:37:42Speaker 4: just say like, yes, I'm on my way, I'm leaving
- 1:37:43Speaker 4: right yeah, exact yeah. But you know, even though like
- 1:37:48Speaker 4: you know, knowing how to handle some of those situations
- 1:37:51Speaker 4: like just after a while, like people just freaking out
- 1:37:56Speaker 4: or just causing like unnecessary stress. And these days are
- 1:38:00Speaker 4: like average day on set is like twelve hours, and
- 1:38:03Speaker 4: you know, I've had people that we go for twenty
- 1:38:07Speaker 4: four hours and and it's just kind of like wow,
- 1:38:12Speaker 4: I physically like can't like handle when somebody like make
- 1:38:18Speaker 4: some of these mistakes because they're you know again like
- 1:38:22Speaker 4: some of them are forgivable, Like I can I can
- 1:38:24Speaker 4: look past through things, but there's just like sometimes where
- 1:38:27Speaker 4: like you can tell that you're being clearly taken advantage
- 1:38:29Speaker 4: of yeah, and there's no benefit out of it, a
- 1:38:32Speaker 4: none whatsoever, or just like you know, just some people
- 1:38:36Speaker 4: aren't you know, fit to be in film, And you
- 1:38:42Speaker 4: really got to like one thing that I learned, and
- 1:38:45Speaker 4: I'm sure James Alteger will tell you this, with the
- 1:38:47Speaker 4: power of no, you do have a choice in the matter.
- 1:38:51Speaker 4: And you know, I feel like if there's like if
- 1:38:54Speaker 4: you're on a set and it's just gonna be trouble
- 1:38:56Speaker 4: and you just have a bad vibe about something, trust
- 1:38:59Speaker 4: your gut and you know it's not it's not a
- 1:39:01Speaker 4: bad thing to say. No. I know, like some people
- 1:39:03Speaker 4: are afraid, like, oh, I'm not going to get a
- 1:39:05Speaker 4: call back, I'm not going to get another job, I'm
- 1:39:08Speaker 4: not gonna get paid. What am I going to do?
- 1:39:10Speaker 4: It's like, no, I don't worry about it. Like if
- 1:39:12Speaker 4: you're in a situation where there's no benefit, like why
- 1:39:16Speaker 4: would you want to keep continuing to do that. I've
- 1:39:19Speaker 4: had situations where people offered me contracts to work for
- 1:39:24Speaker 4: their production company and I'm not I can't you know,
- 1:39:29Speaker 4: read contracts and you know pull you know, I'm a
- 1:39:32Speaker 4: no legal guy or anything like that, but I can
- 1:39:36Speaker 4: I can read them enough to tell them what I'm
- 1:39:38Speaker 4: being screwed, and I would pass them around to to
- 1:39:42Speaker 4: people who do know how to read contracts, like this
- 1:39:44Speaker 4: doesn't look right? Can you can you read this over
- 1:39:46Speaker 4: for me? And I remember specifically there was one friend
- 1:39:49Speaker 4: of mine who was like, is this like a like
- 1:39:52Speaker 4: a Hollywood contract from like the nineteen thirties, Like, cause
- 1:39:56Speaker 4: you're not going to make anything from if you sign this.
- 1:40:00Speaker 2: We'll be right back after a word from our sponsor
- 1:40:06Speaker 2: and now back to the show.
- 1:40:09Speaker 3: Well basically was it? Were they just trying to say,
- 1:40:11Speaker 3: like you're not gonna make anything and trying to like
- 1:40:13Speaker 3: control your rights because like I actually had if somebody
- 1:40:16Speaker 3: present me a contract one time to help to basically
- 1:40:20Speaker 3: co write a scripts and help and co produce the
- 1:40:23Speaker 3: feature in direct terms, it even said you're not paying
- 1:40:27Speaker 3: get paid anything. It was like, well, we're paying it.
- 1:40:29Speaker 3: We're paying the amount of he wrote in zero zero zero.
- 1:40:35Speaker 4: They haven't wrote.
- 1:40:35Speaker 3: They even wrote out zero dollars and zero sense, and
- 1:40:38Speaker 3: I said, wild on Earth. But I signed this and
- 1:40:41Speaker 3: it's like, well it's experienced. I don't need any more
- 1:40:43Speaker 3: experience in like student film stuff, you know what I mean?
- 1:40:47Speaker 3: Like I said, like you and I were talking about
- 1:40:48Speaker 3: this earlier, you can watch some of these bad movies
- 1:40:51Speaker 3: and you can see how they mirror student films. It's
- 1:40:55Speaker 3: like I always turned, I use the term student film
- 1:40:57Speaker 3: with money, yeah, because it basically, hey, it's not two
- 1:41:00Speaker 3: people talking on a backdrop anymore.
- 1:41:02Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:41:02Speaker 3: Although Bigfoot versus T. B. Cooper, Yeah, keep talking about
- 1:41:05Speaker 3: that movie by that, But like the guy TV Cooper
- 1:41:09Speaker 3: was obviously just in an office somewhere going ma'amma, I
- 1:41:12Speaker 3: have a note, you know what I mean. It's just like, Okay,
- 1:41:15Speaker 3: you're just in an office.
- 1:41:16Speaker 4: We got it.
- 1:41:16Speaker 3: You can't have one on the freaking plane. But yeah,
- 1:41:19Speaker 3: plenty of shirtless guys to go around.
- 1:41:20Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly. Well, this this contract to particular, well the
- 1:41:26Speaker 4: one that I'm thinking of right now, it was really
- 1:41:29Speaker 4: just kind of like, you do all this work for us,
- 1:41:31Speaker 4: and we'll give you this small percentage for forgetting us
- 1:41:35Speaker 4: clients and off the back end. Yeah, and actually it
- 1:41:39Speaker 4: was it was funny. I had a friend of mine,
- 1:41:43Speaker 4: you know, go through the contract and I give him
- 1:41:46Speaker 4: a counter offer, which was like basically the reverse because
- 1:41:50Speaker 4: I was the basically the intent of my reply was
- 1:41:54Speaker 4: like I'm onto you guys, and this looks like a
- 1:41:57Speaker 4: contract that, you know, in nicer terms, it looked like
- 1:41:59Speaker 4: a contract they probably just found online. Yeah, that's the exact,
- 1:42:02Speaker 4: which a lot of people do. So you know, keep
- 1:42:04Speaker 4: in mind filmmakers out there, careful of people that just
- 1:42:08Speaker 4: print stuff offline that they don't even look at.
- 1:42:11Speaker 3: Yeah, and cause it looks like a nice contract. I
- 1:42:13Speaker 3: had that dumb with to me before, and I said,
- 1:42:15Speaker 3: is this there was a website that actually had this
- 1:42:18Speaker 3: guy made a website to give people free film contracts,
- 1:42:21Speaker 3: And like I would see keep seeing the same exact
- 1:42:24Speaker 3: like paragraphing and space, and I except saying like is
- 1:42:27Speaker 3: there some place of like, oh yeah, I found it,
- 1:42:29Speaker 3: But I'm sorry, I didn't mean it's like.
- 1:42:30Speaker 4: Plus like these people in particularly, I know that they
- 1:42:34Speaker 4: had no lawyer or anything like that to write this
- 1:42:36Speaker 4: thing for them. So basically we just tour be in
- 1:42:39Speaker 4: the friend of mine. We tore part the contract piece
- 1:42:42Speaker 4: by piece, well not physically, but you know, like we
- 1:42:46Speaker 4: basically gave them counterpoints saying like okay, you have this
- 1:42:48Speaker 4: written down, well I'll be willing to do this instead.
- 1:42:52Speaker 4: And it was funny they accepted on all terms, but
- 1:42:56Speaker 4: then I just ended up saying no, cause I was like,
- 1:42:59Speaker 4: all right, well, if they're willing to offer me this
- 1:43:01Speaker 4: kind of ridiculous contract in the first place, what's stopping
- 1:43:05Speaker 4: them from doing something you know, equally as stupid or
- 1:43:09Speaker 4: even worse down the road. So you know, it just
- 1:43:11Speaker 4: really showed me their true colors, and I was not
- 1:43:15Speaker 4: afraid to say no and just leave it at that.
- 1:43:18Speaker 4: And again, like I feel like with some filmmakers, whether
- 1:43:22Speaker 4: they do stuff like they're set or they aren't, there's
- 1:43:25Speaker 4: always like some sort of paranoid of like somebody gonna
- 1:43:28Speaker 4: hire me for another gig or something like that, because
- 1:43:31Speaker 4: just like you know, just just the hustle of jumping
- 1:43:33Speaker 4: from one thing to another. It's a lot of work
- 1:43:36Speaker 4: and it's very tiring, and it's just stuff like that
- 1:43:40Speaker 4: that I just I just didn't want to put up
- 1:43:42Speaker 4: with anymore. So I was like, you know what, right now,
- 1:43:44Speaker 4: for me, the New York Asian Film Festival is like
- 1:43:47Speaker 4: they treat me right, love the people that I work with.
- 1:43:50Speaker 4: You know, this is what I love about film. And
- 1:43:55Speaker 4: I actually make make better contacts through through New York
- 1:43:58Speaker 4: Asian than I do through anything that I've ever done,
- 1:44:01Speaker 4: even Victoria's Secret. I've made a better contact in New
- 1:44:04Speaker 4: York Gation than I did at n Victoria's Secret.
- 1:44:06Speaker 3: So yeah, and and honestly you probably would have a
- 1:44:10Speaker 3: better time at the New York Asian Film Festival anyway. Yeah.
- 1:44:12Speaker 4: Actually, even for Victoria's Secret, like it was fun the
- 1:44:15Speaker 4: first time, the second go round, it was just kind
- 1:44:17Speaker 4: of Actually, when I did the Victoria's Secret show the
- 1:44:20Speaker 4: first time around, that was kind of like, you know,
- 1:44:23Speaker 4: once you're behind the scenes, I'm pretty sure like most
- 1:44:25Speaker 4: people there were just like so caught up in the
- 1:44:27Speaker 4: glitz and the glam. But the first thing that came
- 1:44:29Speaker 4: to mind was like, wow, this is like so fake, I.
- 1:44:32Speaker 3: Imagine too, Like I know I've seen backstage, like I've
- 1:44:35Speaker 3: seen like on TV. Yeah, it's like so chaotic. Yeah,
- 1:44:38Speaker 3: because they're like everyone's moving at ten thousand miles an hour. Yeah,
- 1:44:42Speaker 3: like oh my god, where the hell's this thing?
- 1:44:43Speaker 4: I love?
- 1:44:44Speaker 3: You know what I mean, They're just like running around
- 1:44:46Speaker 3: and you're like Jesus Christ, like let's get let's just
- 1:44:49Speaker 3: get the models out there, come on. I mean, you
- 1:44:51Speaker 3: know at some of the some of the costumes, obviously
- 1:44:53Speaker 3: you can never wear any of this down the street.
- 1:44:54Speaker 3: It's just for this particular fashion sh Yeah. I mean
- 1:44:56Speaker 3: they've got wings and shit on. I mean imagine wearing
- 1:44:59Speaker 3: those New York. You'd get scene worse in New York. Yeah,
- 1:45:03Speaker 3: actually because I because every time I've ever seen anybody
- 1:45:07Speaker 3: get out of line, even a little bit in New York,
- 1:45:10Speaker 3: it's just like they just get put down immediately. And
- 1:45:12Speaker 3: what I mean by that is like people who walk slow,
- 1:45:15Speaker 3: even foreigners who come over here, like immigrants would come
- 1:45:17Speaker 3: over here, Yeah, they wouldn't know. What I'm saying is
- 1:45:20Speaker 3: that they know right away that you don't walk someone
- 1:45:22Speaker 3: New York. I remember this Muslim man was like he
- 1:45:25Speaker 3: was like, there was this woman walking so in front
- 1:45:27Speaker 3: of him, and he actually turned to her and he said,
- 1:45:29Speaker 3: he goes, it's fucking New York. You gotta walk, yeah,
- 1:45:32Speaker 3: And I'm like, like, but.
- 1:45:34Speaker 4: He knows that, right, Yo. If you if you just
- 1:45:37Speaker 4: like stand around and like look at something like you're
- 1:45:40Speaker 4: like you're in the crossfire.
- 1:45:41Speaker 3: Exactly, you're gonna get a push in Grandma.
- 1:45:44Speaker 4: Like even if you have nowhere to go, you got
- 1:45:48Speaker 4: you're trying to get through as fast as possible. Yes. Yes,
- 1:45:51Speaker 4: I've even had people like who they're just like not
- 1:45:54Speaker 4: from here. And they're walking with me somewhere, and I
- 1:45:57Speaker 4: remember there's like one person in particular who's like, you
- 1:46:00Speaker 4: walk very fast. I'm like, I didn't even notice it
- 1:46:04Speaker 4: until they pointed it out. I'm like, yeah, you're right,
- 1:46:07Speaker 4: and then I was just, you know, it all became
- 1:46:09Speaker 4: clear to me.
- 1:46:10Speaker 3: There was a time a friend of mine we went
- 1:46:13Speaker 3: to New York with a group of his friends where
- 1:46:15Speaker 3: they were from the middle of nowhere in like Kansas
- 1:46:18Speaker 3: or Iowa. I mean, I mean middle of nowhere, and
- 1:46:21Speaker 3: they stopped they saw New York for the first time
- 1:46:23Speaker 3: and like what the hell, and they wanted to take
- 1:46:26Speaker 3: pictures of everything, and I said, look, they're going to
- 1:46:29Speaker 3: get like steam olled. So I said, you take this group.
- 1:46:31Speaker 3: I'm want to take this group. And I started talking
- 1:46:33Speaker 3: to him like, if you want to take a picture,
- 1:46:35Speaker 3: you tell me, and I will tell you where to
- 1:46:37Speaker 3: stand so somebody doesn't come by and fucking lose their
- 1:46:40Speaker 3: mind and you and being like what the fuck you
- 1:46:42Speaker 3: doing on yeah, and because it happens, you know, it's
- 1:46:45Speaker 3: just and so like, you know, there's certain places and
- 1:46:48Speaker 3: like thankfully they they they but like they went to
- 1:46:52Speaker 3: you know, wahwa is right. Yeah, Okay, so we went
- 1:46:54Speaker 3: to wah wah and they couldn't order from the screens
- 1:46:57Speaker 3: because they didn't understand like what it was going by.
- 1:47:00Speaker 3: They would actually time out before they could actually order
- 1:47:02Speaker 3: it and the whole thing would reset.
- 1:47:04Speaker 4: Wow, that's like such like I don't know, it's like
- 1:47:08Speaker 4: such a common thing now, like for a lot of
- 1:47:10Speaker 4: convenience stores and even just like some like regular places
- 1:47:13Speaker 4: just to place your order on a tablet or something.
- 1:47:17Speaker 3: The greatness was a few years ago, but still. But yeah,
- 1:47:20Speaker 3: you know, as we sort of go full circle with this,
- 1:47:22Speaker 3: you know, you and I both got burned out. We
- 1:47:23Speaker 3: both have day jobs. Now we're like, you know what,
- 1:47:26Speaker 3: you know, you went to the Asian Film Festival to
- 1:47:29Speaker 3: as sort of like, look, this is my outlet. I
- 1:47:30Speaker 3: started this podcast and at a frustration man, I honestly
- 1:47:35Speaker 3: because of a couple of reasons. And now you know,
- 1:47:38Speaker 3: we're we're trying to start doing this stuff again, you know,
- 1:47:40Speaker 3: doing our own projects, and it just sort of circles
- 1:47:43Speaker 3: back to what the ultimate we was talking about, where
- 1:47:46Speaker 3: if you don't follow your dreams, this is what you're
- 1:47:49Speaker 3: doing to yourself. You're picking glass out of your knees.
- 1:47:51Speaker 3: You're doing all this other stuffy crawling on.
- 1:47:53Speaker 4: Your hands and knees of the frigging chain around your deck,
- 1:47:55Speaker 4: get in the hot parking lot.
- 1:47:57Speaker 3: And it really does tie in because it's like you're
- 1:48:00Speaker 3: torturing yourself, you know what I mean, You're you're working
- 1:48:02Speaker 3: harder for less.
- 1:48:04Speaker 4: Yeah, and it's just kind of like, I don't know,
- 1:48:07Speaker 4: like when you really badly want to do something. You know,
- 1:48:11Speaker 4: I'm slowly but surely, you know, making my way back
- 1:48:15Speaker 4: into film, Like it's I have to admit it to myself,
- 1:48:18Speaker 4: like I still want to do some of this, maybe
- 1:48:19Speaker 4: not to the degree that I used to do, but
- 1:48:22Speaker 4: I still love it. And you know, least, you know,
- 1:48:25Speaker 4: thankfully for me, like I have the New York Dasian
- 1:48:27Speaker 4: Film Festival to be able to work and like some
- 1:48:30Speaker 4: sort of capacity to film where I can actually effectively,
- 1:48:34Speaker 4: you know, help people enjoy like these amazing films.
- 1:48:37Speaker 3: Yeah. And I mean also I think to picking and
- 1:48:40Speaker 3: choosing is really good because I did the same thing
- 1:48:42Speaker 3: where I would just say yes to every project.
- 1:48:45Speaker 4: Yeah that's bad. I mean I told you the stories.
- 1:48:47Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, the guy the director waking up late
- 1:48:50Speaker 3: on their shoot, the morning.
- 1:48:51Speaker 4: Of and three hours later is still not that Yeah, yeah, because.
- 1:48:54Speaker 3: You if I overslept, I'm coming now.
- 1:48:56Speaker 4: And it's like the time he was those story too, yeah.
- 1:48:58Speaker 3: Exactly yeah, but because he did yeah that stuff too.
- 1:49:00Speaker 3: But like and then the guy I was talking about
- 1:49:02Speaker 3: forgot the key, and it's just you know, it's like
- 1:49:04Speaker 3: one thing after another after and eventually you're like, what
- 1:49:07Speaker 3: the hell, colon the locksmith doesn't work, and you know,
- 1:49:10Speaker 3: it's all that good stuff.
- 1:49:11Speaker 4: Yeah, the whole Like it's like, what am I doing
- 1:49:13Speaker 4: this for?
- 1:49:13Speaker 3: Exactly yeah, and then you get you get burned out
- 1:49:15Speaker 3: and and there and you know again, you know, we
- 1:49:18Speaker 3: t have our own stories about getting burned out. And
- 1:49:20Speaker 3: so so what are your plans for the rest of
- 1:49:22Speaker 3: this year? Like what what what are you hoping to
- 1:49:24Speaker 3: do right now?
- 1:49:24Speaker 4: It's just mainly focusing on the New Yorkcasian Film Festival. Uh,
- 1:49:28Speaker 4: we're actually next this coming week. We've been we've been
- 1:49:33Speaker 4: doing this basically like a YouTube like chat show talk
- 1:49:37Speaker 4: show called naf Chat and y a f f Chat
- 1:49:42Speaker 4: and uh we we started with like a few episodes,
- 1:49:45Speaker 4: like we're starting to get into the groove of things,
- 1:49:48Speaker 4: and this week we're going to be having having a
- 1:49:53Speaker 4: guest come in, and I'm actually gonna be directing the
- 1:49:58Speaker 4: the latest episode.
- 1:50:01Speaker 2: We'll be right back after a word from our sponsor
- 1:50:07Speaker 2: and now back to the show.
- 1:50:10Speaker 4: So this is actually my my return to the director's chair.
- 1:50:14Speaker 4: See see, I knew you were going to drop a bombshell,
- 1:50:16Speaker 4: So so I am like directing again. Like the last
- 1:50:19Speaker 4: thing I directed was with a friend of mine named
- 1:50:22Speaker 4: Stefan Versy. We did a music video for our friend
- 1:50:26Speaker 4: Baron called The Remedy and you know that was, Oh
- 1:50:31Speaker 4: my god. I'm trying to think of like how long
- 1:50:33Speaker 4: ago that was. Had to be like three or four years.
- 1:50:38Speaker 4: Which is funny because like even though I haven't really
- 1:50:40Speaker 4: done anything like you know, super big in film, it's
- 1:50:45Speaker 4: just really been helping out with a New York Asian
- 1:50:48Speaker 4: people still ask me like, oh, like what are you
- 1:50:51Speaker 4: gonna do next? Or like if I take a trip
- 1:50:53Speaker 4: to LA They're like, oh, except for work, Like so
- 1:50:57Speaker 4: you like just even like with like friends of mine,
- 1:50:59Speaker 4: like they they want me to get back in. They
- 1:51:03Speaker 4: know what I'm capable of. So you know, NAF chat
- 1:51:06Speaker 4: with with New York Asian Film Festival. I'm gonna be
- 1:51:10Speaker 4: back in the director's seat directing those. Our next guest
- 1:51:15Speaker 4: is Kanji uh Fu Tachi, who's he's kind of like
- 1:51:20Speaker 4: one of those like that guys in Japanese movies. Uh
- 1:51:24Speaker 4: He was in our our Audience Award winner last year
- 1:51:29Speaker 4: called Too Young to Die. And we're gonna be filming
- 1:51:33Speaker 4: it at Film Movement, who's distributing Kanji's new film Harmonium
- 1:51:39Speaker 4: to the US. So we're gonna be interviewing him there
- 1:51:43Speaker 4: in their in their in their office space. So it's
- 1:51:46Speaker 4: gonna be it's gonna be fun. You know. It's like
- 1:51:49Speaker 4: I've heard of this guy. I've seen movies that that
- 1:51:51Speaker 4: you know, he's been in. So technically I'm gonna be
- 1:51:53Speaker 4: like directing him for this like talk show.
- 1:51:56Speaker 3: So what what what what are you gonna say? Like
- 1:51:58Speaker 3: what types of directions you're gonna give him, like like
- 1:52:01Speaker 3: talk louder and just be like, uh, I'm trying to
- 1:52:05Speaker 3: make a joke beer, but yeah, it's my people tempt
- 1:52:07Speaker 3: the humor. Like I remember I always used to say
- 1:52:11Speaker 3: as a joke, I would tell people, like a directing
- 1:52:14Speaker 3: tip is always to say things that mean nothing. Choose
- 1:52:16Speaker 3: to make yourself you know what I mean, Like I
- 1:52:18Speaker 3: don't really believe that this is a chair. Yeah you
- 1:52:21Speaker 3: know what I mean, And it's like what the We're
- 1:52:25Speaker 3: gonna make it more with you. Well, it's like it
- 1:52:27Speaker 3: doesn't really mean anything, but.
- 1:52:28Speaker 4: Well this kind of like just like started because you know,
- 1:52:31Speaker 4: I didn't really like have any plans to to direct
- 1:52:35Speaker 4: or anything for for this project. It was just kind
- 1:52:38Speaker 4: of actually coming from me like giving them like a
- 1:52:41Speaker 4: lot of feedback. Like there'd just be like you know,
- 1:52:45Speaker 4: certain like these like nervous ticks that they would do,
- 1:52:48Speaker 4: like on the camera, or like one of the guys
- 1:52:50Speaker 4: would have like their arms folded the entire time, like no,
- 1:52:53Speaker 4: unfold your arms, and like just like one where they
- 1:52:58Speaker 4: were drinking beer and like the the the the beer
- 1:53:03Speaker 4: like logo is on the cup and like like don't
- 1:53:06Speaker 4: don't drink out, don't drink the beer, like just just
- 1:53:09Speaker 4: leave it there. Let it be a prop in front
- 1:53:11Speaker 4: of you. You don't have to keep drinking it while
- 1:53:12Speaker 4: you're talking. And you know, just like offering feedback about
- 1:53:15Speaker 4: like body language and you know, like eye contact amongst
- 1:53:19Speaker 4: you know them, and you know, just like the spacing
- 1:53:22Speaker 4: in between them. Like it's kind of like even though
- 1:53:25Speaker 4: having like done film in a while, Like all this
- 1:53:27Speaker 4: stuff is like coming back to me. I'm looking at
- 1:53:29Speaker 4: the camera, I'm looking at the You're doing it all wrong,
- 1:53:32Speaker 4: and just like I just want to like yell at
- 1:53:34Speaker 4: everybody and flip a table and.
- 1:53:36Speaker 3: Are you gonna start wearing like like leather chaps and
- 1:53:39Speaker 3: have a riding crop like the old fashioned directors? Yes,
- 1:53:43Speaker 3: and just be like a slave driver exactly, berat with
- 1:53:47Speaker 3: a bullhorn and leather chaps and a horse. Wep, Yeah,
- 1:53:53Speaker 3: like a riding crop. So you just always like you
- 1:53:55Speaker 3: always slap because that's what you do. You slap it
- 1:53:57Speaker 3: against your your leather chaps, cecils to bill or something
- 1:54:00Speaker 3: like that when it was old timey, you know director exactly. Yeah,
- 1:54:04Speaker 3: I have like the big megaphone. Yeah, you're like two
- 1:54:07Speaker 3: feet away from the actors like we are right now. Yeah,
- 1:54:10Speaker 3: And it was like screaming at and like god damn powers,
- 1:54:13Speaker 3: like just just calm down.
- 1:54:15Speaker 4: Yeah, I can't work with any of these.
- 1:54:18Speaker 3: Oh now you can't hear how your ear drums blown up.
- 1:54:22Speaker 4: So it's just kind of like stuff like that. And
- 1:54:25Speaker 4: you know where we're you know, we're trying to do
- 1:54:29Speaker 4: something new because the festival just happens once a year.
- 1:54:32Speaker 4: We also do the Old School Kung Fu Fest, which
- 1:54:35Speaker 4: is like a program that we used to do a
- 1:54:39Speaker 4: while back. We recently bought it back for like the
- 1:54:41Speaker 4: last like less like three years, so it's like okay,
- 1:54:45Speaker 4: so essentially we're just doing the New York Asian Film
- 1:54:47Speaker 4: Festival and the Old School Kung Fu Festival. So it's
- 1:54:51Speaker 4: like the rest of the year, it's kind of like
- 1:54:54Speaker 4: there's it's just like this big gap. So we're we're
- 1:54:58Speaker 4: doing you know, napchat to like fill that gap. So
- 1:55:02Speaker 4: like there's a presence for us throughout the year to
- 1:55:06Speaker 4: get the word out about the festival. Uh you know,
- 1:55:09Speaker 4: we're also actually I'm also in charge of their Instagram,
- 1:55:14Speaker 4: so it's like me and like a few other people
- 1:55:16Speaker 4: who are you know, just trying to like again like
- 1:55:20Speaker 4: just like fill that like time that like nothing's happening
- 1:55:23Speaker 4: with something I say. So people are aware of us
- 1:55:25Speaker 4: because it's a really unique situation because you know, the
- 1:55:30Speaker 4: the group that you know puts us all together is
- 1:55:32Speaker 4: called Subway Cinema, and it's kind of like, well, how
- 1:55:35Speaker 4: do you market like a group that just does like
- 1:55:37Speaker 4: film programs and like we don't have our own theater. Usually,
- 1:55:41Speaker 4: like if you hear about like something like Fantastic Fest
- 1:55:43Speaker 4: like that happens at the almod Draft House. They have
- 1:55:45Speaker 4: their own theater and you know, these groups that put
- 1:55:49Speaker 4: them on. It's not like it's not like people you know,
- 1:55:54Speaker 4: like talk about subway cinema or anything like that. It's
- 1:55:56Speaker 4: a really unique, you know, thing to market. So we're
- 1:56:00Speaker 4: just kind of like, Okay, well, what's the potential that
- 1:56:02Speaker 4: we have here, Because we know people love the festival.
- 1:56:06Speaker 4: We have like these like you know, like a list
- 1:56:08Speaker 4: you know Asian you know, guests coming in, and it's
- 1:56:12Speaker 4: kind of like, okay, well what can we do so
- 1:56:14Speaker 4: people like know who we are and like if we
- 1:56:17Speaker 4: do like a special event like a old school Kung
- 1:56:19Speaker 4: Fu fest or in the past, uh, you know, we've
- 1:56:22Speaker 4: we've also had the New York Korean Film Festival. So
- 1:56:25Speaker 4: how do we get people to you know, piggyback from
- 1:56:27Speaker 4: the New York Asian Film Festival to go to these
- 1:56:29Speaker 4: other stuff that we're doing, or sometimes we might do
- 1:56:32Speaker 4: like a one off screening. So one of the great
- 1:56:36Speaker 4: things about New York Asian is the audience. They're really
- 1:56:41Speaker 4: passionate about these films. They really you know, know you
- 1:56:44Speaker 4: know so much about these actors, actresses and directors and everybody.
- 1:56:50Speaker 4: And just like for me, how working with New York
- 1:56:55Speaker 4: Asian as a volunteer to a staff member, I have
- 1:56:59Speaker 4: always been constantly in contact with the audience because we
- 1:57:02Speaker 4: do like you know, prize giveaways and like the Audience Award.
- 1:57:06Speaker 4: So like when they hand this like stuff back, you know,
- 1:57:08Speaker 4: they're either you know, giving us feedback or like, I'm
- 1:57:11Speaker 4: just curious, you know, you know why these people are coming.
- 1:57:15Speaker 4: How did they find out about it? Because you know,
- 1:57:16Speaker 4: I just I heard through word of mouth? Like how
- 1:57:19Speaker 4: do these people find out about it? That's I'm like
- 1:57:21Speaker 4: really curious, And you know what keeps them coming back?
- 1:57:24Speaker 4: Like we have our hardcore people, you know coming in,
- 1:57:27Speaker 4: and we have like friends like my friend Christina, who
- 1:57:29Speaker 4: flies in from like Texas, you know, every year for
- 1:57:33Speaker 4: the New York Asian Film Festival. So uh, you know,
- 1:57:37Speaker 4: feedback from the audience is a big, big thing. It's like,
- 1:57:41Speaker 4: you know, you don't know what you're doing right or
- 1:57:44Speaker 4: doing wrong unless you get that feedback. And it's crucial.
- 1:57:47Speaker 4: And you know, some of these people end up you know,
- 1:57:49Speaker 4: becoming friends of mine, like hanging out with them, and hey,
- 1:57:51Speaker 4: it's also a great way to network too. There's been
- 1:57:55Speaker 4: some like interesting people that like who who are in
- 1:57:58Speaker 4: the business, who come every year. They just want to
- 1:58:01Speaker 4: watch movies and they love you know, you know the
- 1:58:05Speaker 4: different you know genres that we that we include from
- 1:58:09Speaker 4: all the different countries and stuff. And recently we're taking
- 1:58:12Speaker 4: more of a focus on like uh, I think Southeast Asia,
- 1:58:15Speaker 4: Like there's like we're showing more Filipino movies and like
- 1:58:21Speaker 4: from Vietnam and stuff like that, not just like Japan, Korea, China,
- 1:58:25Speaker 4: Hong Kong, which everybody knows and loves. So we're we're
- 1:58:29Speaker 4: really broadening our scope, uh these days. I know, like
- 1:58:34Speaker 4: for instance, last year, like we brought like one of
- 1:58:36Speaker 4: the biggest you know Filipino actors, John Cruse, John Lloyd Cruz,
- 1:58:40Speaker 4: you know, to the festival and you know, really showing
- 1:58:44Speaker 4: people what uh you know, what's what's being like offered
- 1:58:49Speaker 4: in all these different Asian countries. And you know, so far,
- 1:58:51Speaker 4: the feedback has been like amazing. You know, back in
- 1:58:54Speaker 4: the day, we showed a lot of genre movies and
- 1:58:56Speaker 4: now you know, we're sixteen years old. If we're in
- 1:59:00Speaker 4: our Kinsignetta. Oh you know, where were maturing. So you know,
- 1:59:06Speaker 4: it's it's becoming evident in the festival itself, you know,
- 1:59:10Speaker 4: as you know, some genre movies they're just not as
- 1:59:13Speaker 4: good as they used to be. So you know, we're
- 1:59:15Speaker 4: we're just just doing our best to bring like the
- 1:59:18Speaker 4: best quality, you know, Asian films, you know, to to
- 1:59:22Speaker 4: North America for people to to enjoy.
- 1:59:25Speaker 3: If you ever want a recommendation for a fun Filipino movie,
- 1:59:29Speaker 3: uh huh, check out for Your Height only starring Whang Wang. Oh, well,
- 1:59:34Speaker 3: we'd okay, I was gonna say there's actually I was
- 1:59:38Speaker 3: in New York and somebody actually had and we were
- 1:59:40Speaker 3: at a film festival and somebody actually had a shirt
- 1:59:43Speaker 3: that just said Wang Wang and it's just a picture
- 1:59:45Speaker 3: of him, and I wow, I wonder how many people
- 1:59:48Speaker 3: other than complete film nerds with no life like me
- 1:59:52Speaker 3: know who to help Wang Wan is? Well? You you
- 1:59:54Speaker 3: know who?
- 1:59:54Speaker 4: Yeah, you know that's like one of the original like
- 1:59:57Speaker 4: YouTube viral videos is Uma guy.
- 2:00:01Speaker 3: Yeah, that's it.
- 2:00:03Speaker 2: We'll be right back after a word from our sponsor
- 2:00:10Speaker 2: and now back to the show.
- 2:00:13Speaker 4: For people just like oh it's that like that like
- 2:00:16Speaker 4: midget from wherever that like does kung fu and he's
- 2:00:19Speaker 4: like a James Bond guy.
- 2:00:20Speaker 3: Yeah, for your height only. And then the sequel was
- 2:00:23Speaker 3: I forgure what it was called.
- 2:00:25Speaker 4: It was like another kind of like a spoof name. Yeah.
- 2:00:27Speaker 3: I think it was a spoof of the Spy who
- 2:00:29Speaker 3: loves Me.
- 2:00:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:00:30Speaker 3: I think it was maybe the the the way way
- 2:00:33Speaker 3: who Loved Me. I don't know, well, but but yeah,
- 2:00:36Speaker 3: that but that's my recommendation. But all kidding aside though
- 2:00:39Speaker 3: that it's great though that you're having your Kinsenira and
- 2:00:43Speaker 3: that you know the the again yeah, not you personally,
- 2:00:46Speaker 3: but sweet sixteen. But but no, because again, it's always
- 2:00:51Speaker 3: great to see these different films from other cultures, which
- 2:00:53Speaker 3: is why I'm always against when art becomes homogeneous and
- 2:00:56Speaker 3: all and art becomes like this thing where you have
- 2:00:58Speaker 3: to follow these set of guidelines rules. No, you have
- 2:01:01Speaker 3: to be like Neo and the Matrix, anyone who tells
- 2:01:04Speaker 3: you that ship okay, mare at the end, when Neo
- 2:01:06Speaker 3: becomes the one, you have to look up and just
- 2:01:08Speaker 3: hold up your hand and say no and let it
- 2:01:11Speaker 3: all go away. And that's what you have to do,
- 2:01:14Speaker 3: and because otherwise we're all just gonna be sitting around
- 2:01:19Speaker 3: watching the same art that that everybody else has that
- 2:01:22Speaker 3: you know and we and it's just gonna be the
- 2:01:24Speaker 3: same movie to know where you are and you can't
- 2:01:25Speaker 3: have that. It's it's gonna be an expression of your culture,
- 2:01:28Speaker 3: expression of yourself, and it's it's all that good stuff.
- 2:01:31Speaker 3: That's why I'm glad you know that there's there's film
- 2:01:33Speaker 3: festivals like this out there and just to get sort
- 2:01:35Speaker 3: of a different vibe. And you know, America is the
- 2:01:38Speaker 3: melting pot and it's a yes, heiresman. I mean you
- 2:01:42Speaker 3: can in America. You can go out and grab some
- 2:01:46Speaker 3: Mexican food, watch an Asian American film festival. You get
- 2:01:49Speaker 3: the First Amendment right, so you can talk shit on people.
- 2:01:51Speaker 3: God bless the First Amendment right, because if it was
- 2:01:53Speaker 3: the First Amendment right, wasn't around. I mean, you know me,
- 2:01:56Speaker 3: I just love the exactly the wrestling fans would be done.
- 2:02:00Speaker 4: Yeah, how much about Raw every Monday?
- 2:02:04Speaker 3: Slanted them slant there's a lie. Yeah, And some of
- 2:02:08Speaker 3: these wrestlers with these shoot interviews, they would they would
- 2:02:11Speaker 3: be gone too.
- 2:02:13Speaker 4: Well, now it's all podcasts, so there's there's no like
- 2:02:15Speaker 4: shoot interviews because they go on Steff getting paid by
- 2:02:18Speaker 4: like some guy to film them, like do a shoot interview.
- 2:02:21Speaker 4: Now they're just like going for free on a podcast.
- 2:02:23Speaker 3: I bet see. I don't get that, Like I don't
- 2:02:25Speaker 3: understand why they would do that, Like it has to
- 2:02:27Speaker 3: be a reason for it. I have a few theory
- 2:02:30Speaker 3: because like Honkey talk Man, now, for instance, you're the
- 2:02:32Speaker 3: hockey talk band, right. Oh yeah, so he goes around
- 2:02:34Speaker 3: to like these places are just us live shows. And
- 2:02:37Speaker 3: I know, I know Bruce Pittricks doing the exact same thing.
- 2:02:40Speaker 3: And by the way, I want to give a shout
- 2:02:42Speaker 3: out to Connie Conrad who does a Bruce Pitcher podcast. Now,
- 2:02:45Speaker 3: he he did the Brick Flair podcast. I actually we
- 2:02:47Speaker 3: follow each other on on Twitter and he's actually a
- 2:02:50Speaker 3: really good guy, So shout out to him. Uh, he's
