- 1:05Speaker 2: I kill people every fucking day.
- 1:08Speaker 3: That's right.
- 1:09Speaker 1: When I was growing up in Bakersfield, my favorite thing
- 1:12Speaker 1: in all the world was to go to the movies
- 1:13Speaker 1: on Saturday afternoons for the chapter plays.
- 1:17Speaker 3: I know that, mister man.
- 1:19Speaker 4: They also call them cereals.
- 1:20Speaker 3: I'm not stupid, you know.
- 1:23Speaker 5: I am the.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Devil and I am here to do the devil's work.
- 1:38Speaker 5: Welcome to Beyond the Blood, where we uncover the truth
- 1:41Speaker 5: behind the quiet smiles, the summer heat in the darkness
- 1:44Speaker 5: no one wants to talk about. And as always I
- 1:47Speaker 5: have my co host Chris joining me tonight. What's going on, Chris?
- 1:50Speaker 3: What's up? Man?
- 1:52Speaker 5: Well, we're heading to Camp Airwhack, a place that looks
- 1:55Speaker 5: innocent fun from a distance, but up close, something's wrong.
- 2:00Speaker 5: The kids are cruel, the adults are worse, and in
- 2:02Speaker 5: the shadows, someone is watching someone who never learned how
- 2:06Speaker 5: to survive the pain that made them. We're diving into
- 2:09Speaker 5: the twisted world of sleep away Camp, a slasher that
- 2:13Speaker 5: hides its horror behind sunlit cabins and screaming teams. And
- 2:19Speaker 5: we're going deeper with b. R. Fwind's novelization, which pulls
- 2:24Speaker 5: us inside the minds, the memories, and the secrets that
- 2:27Speaker 5: the film only hints at until that unforgettable final moment.
- 2:32Speaker 5: So grab a seat by the lake, keep your voice down,
- 2:35Speaker 5: and don't trust the quiet ones. This is a sleep
- 2:37Speaker 5: away camp on Beyond the Blood.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Dude, have you ever stayed at a sleep away camp?
- 2:44Speaker 5: I have, really, Yeah, not for I think that they
- 2:48Speaker 5: were there for three weeks.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Oh three was it wasn't like fat camp, right, you're skinny?
- 2:58Speaker 5: No, No, it was. It was a church camp that
- 3:02Speaker 5: I went to every summer. I think it was like
- 3:06Speaker 5: more so in elementary if I remember correctly, and I
- 3:12Speaker 5: was being I was always like really nervous going to it, Yeah,
- 3:15Speaker 5: just because it was you know, you're away from home.
- 3:18Speaker 5: You only know a handful of people there, you know,
- 3:21Speaker 5: and it's just but it's it's definitely a cool experience,
- 3:26Speaker 5: like going back and watching some of these movies, you know,
- 3:29Speaker 5: especially with sleep Away Camp. Obviously none of this stuff
- 3:32Speaker 5: hopefully it didn't go on around me, but it makes
- 3:36Speaker 5: me feel very nostalgic for when I used to go
- 3:39Speaker 5: to it.
- 3:40Speaker 3: You mean to tell me you've never had a balloon
- 3:41Speaker 3: full of urine?
- 3:43Speaker 5: Nope, I can't say that I have.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Well, dude, I'm stoked to be back here with you. Absolutely,
- 3:50Speaker 3: of course we're talking about Sleepway Camp from nineteen eighty three.
- 3:54Speaker 3: This was written, directed and produced by Robert Hiltzik, shot
- 3:57Speaker 3: by Benjamin Davis with makeup effects. Why word French. Some
- 4:01Speaker 3: music composed composed by Edward. I can't say it's a below.
- 4:05Speaker 3: I think it is his last name, and this was
- 4:07Speaker 3: distributed by United Film Distribution Company. This is a very
- 4:13Speaker 3: very special episode for us because we've teamed up with
- 4:16Speaker 3: in Cyclopocalypse Publications for this episode. Psychopocalypse is a company
- 4:23Speaker 3: that I've been personally collecting for pretty much years now.
- 4:28Speaker 3: I think Erica has bought me a bunch of their novelizations,
- 4:32Speaker 3: some I have a good bit on my own, as
- 4:34Speaker 3: well as some other work that they've put out. You know,
- 4:38Speaker 3: one of the things that I know that you know,
- 4:40Speaker 3: I'm very passionate about are novelizations. Absolutely something that I
- 4:44Speaker 3: collected very young, when I was a kid. I feel
- 4:47Speaker 3: like that was kind of like the height of them.
- 4:49Speaker 3: So now in twenty twenty five, to kind of see
- 4:51Speaker 3: a resurgence happening with them, it makes me very very happy,
- 4:56Speaker 3: and I'm stoked that a company like in cyclo Apocalypse,
- 5:00Speaker 3: along with a ton others, are kind of bringing them
- 5:03Speaker 3: back and keeping them alive again. It's something that I
- 5:08Speaker 3: really hope to kind of continue seeing more and more
- 5:11Speaker 3: and more of. But you know, we were we kind
- 5:16Speaker 3: of reached out to a psycho Apocalypse because they had
- 5:18Speaker 3: shared a podcast episode of ours where we had mentioned
- 5:22Speaker 3: them in a previous episode. We had a meeting with
- 5:26Speaker 3: Mark Miller, their founder, and we were trying to decide
- 5:31Speaker 3: which book we can put together with a commentary episode
- 5:35Speaker 3: and kind of cover both of One Time and sleep
- 5:38Speaker 3: Away Camp was perfect, perfect choice. Oh dude, I'm so
- 5:43Speaker 3: happy we did this. Like to talk about briefly a
- 5:49Speaker 3: novelization that expands upon the materials so perfectly. It's using
- 5:58Speaker 3: in earlier draft of the script than the final script.
- 6:02Speaker 3: There's there's some pretty major differences there. But this novel
- 6:06Speaker 3: was written by b. R. Flynn, who is a trans writer,
- 6:09Speaker 3: which was very important for En Psycho Apocalypse in the
- 6:13Speaker 3: kind of creation of putting this novelization together. It brings
- 6:16Speaker 3: a very unique personal perspective to the character of Angela.
- 6:22Speaker 5: I thought it just enhanced the experience overall, you know
- 6:27Speaker 5: from ya seeing it through that lens, I thought was
- 6:30Speaker 5: really important and critical.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Yeah, it is, and it's something that I think was
- 6:35Speaker 3: so vital going into it and kind of understanding for
- 6:41Speaker 3: us as a reader the author personal attachment to to
- 6:49Speaker 3: the kind of the feelings and the experiences of the character.
- 6:54Speaker 3: It brings a very very very personal sense to I'm
- 7:00Speaker 3: laughing because there's moments in this book from the perspective
- 7:06Speaker 3: of Angela that are so real and so sensitive. It's
- 7:11Speaker 3: amazing that it winds up in a book for sleep
- 7:14Speaker 3: Away Camp. You don't expect that, no going in not
- 7:17Speaker 3: at all, And genuinely, as much as I love the
- 7:21Speaker 3: Sleepwy Camp movie, I think the book is better. I
- 7:25Speaker 3: think the book expanded upon it so much better. That
- 7:28Speaker 3: is far. If you're talking like should I read the
- 7:30Speaker 3: book and or watch the movie, I think the book
- 7:33Speaker 3: tells the story better than the movie does.
- 7:35Speaker 5: Yeah. I felt, like, you know, having limited experience and
- 7:41Speaker 5: you know, reading film novelizations, I felt, you know, one
- 7:45Speaker 5: of the things you and I were talking about was
- 7:47Speaker 5: how this just overall enhancy experience I had watching the movie.
- 7:52Speaker 5: I got more out of the book than I was
- 7:54Speaker 5: ever expecting. So I have to give b. R. Flinn
- 7:58Speaker 5: a lot of credit because, you know, just like I said,
- 8:04Speaker 5: seeing it from such a different perspective, I thought was
- 8:06Speaker 5: just so crucial to having more of like a personal
- 8:10Speaker 5: touch on this, like not only the film, but with
- 8:14Speaker 5: the novelization.
- 8:15Speaker 3: Yeah, and alongside that stuff, it does everything that you
- 8:19Speaker 3: want from a novelization. It makes the death scenes gruesome
- 8:24Speaker 3: and graphic, It expands upon them in ways that really
- 8:29Speaker 3: kind of it's much meaner in the kills than the
- 8:35Speaker 3: movie is.
- 8:36Speaker 5: Oh they're not really.
- 8:37Speaker 3: Yeah, well we'll get into them more. I promise you
- 8:41Speaker 3: we're gonna break these down. I do want to say
- 8:44Speaker 3: right off the bat, just a spoiler warning. Clearly, I
- 8:47Speaker 3: think if you're listening to this, you've seen sleep Away Camp.
- 8:49Speaker 3: But if you are interested in the novel, this isn't
- 8:51Speaker 3: now available from its psycho Apocalypse, so make sure go
- 8:55Speaker 3: over and check that out. We'll have links in the bio.
- 8:56Speaker 3: These aren't affiliate links. We don't get any kickback from those.
- 9:00Speaker 3: We just want to support these guys as much as
- 9:01Speaker 3: we can. And a huge thank you, you know, from
- 9:04Speaker 3: us through you purchasing it, for allowing us this opportunity.
- 9:08Speaker 3: But spoiler warning, we are going to dive into the
- 9:10Speaker 3: stuff that's different about the book and the movie. So
- 9:13Speaker 3: if you want to read the book and you don't
- 9:15Speaker 3: want to know what differences are there, you don't want
- 9:18Speaker 3: that ruined for you, pause, go buy it. Read It's
- 9:22Speaker 3: about one hundred and ninety swift pages. You'll get through
- 9:24Speaker 3: it very quickly, and then come back to this episode,
- 9:27Speaker 3: because I think it's going to be a great conversation
- 9:29Speaker 3: that we're about to have.
- 9:30Speaker 5: It was a quick read. It didn't take too long.
- 9:33Speaker 3: I think I read it the first time. I think
- 9:35Speaker 3: I told you like a day and a half.
- 9:37Speaker 5: Well, it wasn't that quick for me. But then again,
- 9:41Speaker 5: I felt like I like to take a little breaks
- 9:43Speaker 5: in between.
- 9:44Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, No, I stormed right through, man, I was.
- 9:48Speaker 3: But I want to dive into something a little bit
- 9:51Speaker 3: different I want to do. I want to highlight some
- 9:54Speaker 3: news that's been coming out for physical media real quick
- 9:57Speaker 3: and kind of talk about some things that I know
- 10:00Speaker 3: I'm very excited about that features some bonus features that
- 10:02Speaker 3: I would encourage everyone to seek out and find when
- 10:05Speaker 3: these releases do come out. The first big one January sixth,
- 10:10Speaker 3: coming from Neon is Chris Stuckman's Shelby Oaks. I don't know, Steve,
- 10:15Speaker 3: did you get a chance to see this?
- 10:17Speaker 5: I haven't. I'd heard a lot of buzz behind this
- 10:25Speaker 5: film leading up to it when it was released. I'm
- 10:30Speaker 5: obviously familiar with Chris Stuckman through YouTube, So to see
- 10:33Speaker 5: that transition from you know, having such an established following
- 10:41Speaker 5: on YouTube to directing films, I think it's pretty remarkable.
- 10:45Speaker 5: So I'm really excited to see this film. It's definitely
- 10:50Speaker 5: on my watch list.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Have you I did not? I know, the marketing leading
- 10:54Speaker 3: up was fantastic. Well the I mean I went from
- 10:58Speaker 3: an avid of Chris Stuckman to kind of moving away
- 11:03Speaker 3: from watching reviewers. So then all of a sudden, I
- 11:06Speaker 3: felt like my internet life was bombarded by Chris again
- 11:09Speaker 3: because the marketing was everywhere, which is great. I'm happy
- 11:14Speaker 3: it went that way.
- 11:15Speaker 5: I was really impressed with the rollout that they had
- 11:17Speaker 5: for this film. You know, just left me guessing what
- 11:21Speaker 5: this movie is actually about, you know, the way that
- 11:23Speaker 5: they teased it during the marketing campaign. But props to him,
- 11:28Speaker 5: you know, it's pretty cool.
- 11:31Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, Well this is getting a Blu Ray release
- 11:34Speaker 3: and does have a commentary track by Chris Stuckman. Very
- 11:37Speaker 3: excited to check watch the movie but then follow up
- 11:39Speaker 3: with that commentary track. You also get six episodes which
- 11:43Speaker 3: cover I'm making of Shelby Oaks as well. One piece
- 11:48Speaker 3: of news that I'm very excited about from a label
- 11:51Speaker 3: that US here in the US haven't really been shown yet,
- 11:54Speaker 3: but I was lucky enough to kind of come across
- 11:56Speaker 3: them on Instagram as a last Slate Video. These guys
- 12:01Speaker 3: just recently put out Laid to Rest one and two,
- 12:04Speaker 3: which are two of the best kind of lower budget
- 12:07Speaker 3: slashers ever. They're kind of like the Terrifier before Terrifier.
- 12:12Speaker 3: It's like, if you knew, you knew about Chrome's Goal,
- 12:14Speaker 3: and you knew about these Late to Rest movies, They're incredible.
- 12:18Speaker 3: They do these really nice kind of deluxe releases with
- 12:23Speaker 3: an outer case and you know, our cards, insider character cards,
- 12:27Speaker 3: whatever you might call it. But they just announced from
- 12:30Speaker 3: nineteen ninety three on Blu Ray snap Dragon, which comes
- 12:34Speaker 3: out on December fifteenth, And this is the first film
- 12:37Speaker 3: role of Pamela Anderson. And I don't know if you've
- 12:40Speaker 3: ever seen this.
- 12:42Speaker 5: I haven't you.
- 12:44Speaker 3: I think they could be a fan.
- 12:48Speaker 5: I'm trusting your judgment on this.
- 12:51Speaker 3: What I'm very excited about with this is not only
- 12:53Speaker 3: is there an interview with the director, Worth Keeter, but
- 12:56Speaker 3: there's also a Calling the Shots documentary, which is a
- 12:59Speaker 3: retrospective on Pamela Anderson's filmography. Very very cool. That's the
- 13:03Speaker 3: kind of stuff I like.
- 13:04Speaker 5: I'm here for it.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Yeah, very very cool. Another one I'm excited about because
- 13:09Speaker 3: I think I should have checked this before we went live.
- 13:12Speaker 3: I think Vinegar Syndrome released this before. This is Devil
- 13:16Speaker 3: Times five from nineteen seventy four, coming to the Slasher
- 13:21Speaker 3: Classics Blue Ray, Blue Blue Blue Ray, Lie Jesus Blue
- 13:26Speaker 3: ray Line from eighty eight Films January twenty sixth. This
- 13:31Speaker 3: release comes with a brand new audio commentary with the
- 13:35Speaker 3: hysteria continues. There's an archival commentary with the cast, producer
- 13:39Speaker 3: and then unaccredited director David Sheldon, a whole bunch of interviews.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Do you know anything about Devil Times five?
- 13:48Speaker 5: I don't. I remember seeing this when I think it
- 13:51Speaker 5: was Vinegar Syndrome that released the four K for this.
- 13:55Speaker 3: I feel my gut went to Vinegar Syndrome.
- 14:00Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 14:00Speaker 3: Funny like, as we're recording this, I have my computer
- 14:02Speaker 3: in front of me and I could just.
- 14:04Speaker 5: I remember when this was released, but I haven't had
- 14:06Speaker 5: a chance to It was.
- 14:08Speaker 3: Vinegar Syndrome, yes, and it looks like it was a
- 14:13Speaker 3: Is this a blu ray or a four K.
- 14:18Speaker 2: K?
- 14:19Speaker 3: It is a four K YEP with hd R Yes
- 14:23Speaker 3: Films being front of the UK. This is the official
- 14:26Speaker 3: probably UK release.
- 14:27Speaker 5: I will say though, I love what eighty eight Films
- 14:30Speaker 5: is doing with the Slasher Classics that they've been putting out.
- 14:34Speaker 5: They have a number of them so far. Pretty sure.
- 14:36Speaker 3: There's a bunch of them, man, and they have numbered spines.
- 14:41Speaker 3: I remember a couple of years ago, I think, kind
- 14:43Speaker 3: of before I went region free looking into it, and
- 14:45Speaker 3: they were already at like number forty. I think by that.
- 14:49Speaker 5: What I didn't realize it was that many.
- 14:51Speaker 3: It's a lot, it's a lot. It should I think
- 14:54Speaker 3: I have it right here, there's Shelby, oh snap Dragon,
- 15:00Speaker 3: and oh yeah, here it is right here. This is
- 15:02Speaker 3: number sixty one in the Slasher Classics line.
- 15:08Speaker 5: So I got a lot of catch up to this started.
- 15:12Speaker 3: One way, make your way down, Make Way. I also
- 15:18Speaker 3: want to shout out another release coming in February from Radiance.
- 15:23Speaker 3: This is nineteen sixty five's Libido, and I'm very excited
- 15:27Speaker 3: about this. I have a bear like bare Bones Blu
- 15:31Speaker 3: ray of Libido, but this this new release from Radiance,
- 15:34Speaker 3: which is an incredible company, astonishing company. They have a
- 15:39Speaker 3: twenty twenty five audio commentary recorded by Sam Deagan, who
- 15:43Speaker 3: was one of my favorite people in the industry doing
- 15:48Speaker 3: absolutely wonderful material with audio commentaries and podcasts and stuff.
- 15:53Speaker 3: So that that's that's the reason to pick it up
- 15:55Speaker 3: for me. Very nice and possibly the biggest news that
- 16:01Speaker 3: we had to kind of just mention here before we
- 16:03Speaker 3: getting a sleep away camp.
- 16:04Speaker 5: You saved the best for last.
- 16:06Speaker 3: Best for last. Severn Severn Films, as everyone knows, my
- 16:10Speaker 3: favorite label in the industry, has been doing their kind
- 16:16Speaker 3: of Black Friday announcements. Every day they announced a new title,
- 16:20Speaker 3: and we knew this was coming thanks to some information
- 16:24Speaker 3: that was put out a couple months ago from one
- 16:27Speaker 3: of the you know like release Instagram pages. But now
- 16:32Speaker 3: we have an official announcement that Severn is putting out
- 16:34Speaker 3: a four K of Mario Baba's A Bay of Blood Yeah,
- 16:40Speaker 3: from nineteen seventy one, and in typical Severn style, this
- 16:45Speaker 3: is a five disc set. The fifth disc is a soundtrack,
- 16:51Speaker 3: but this comes with three separate versions of the film,
- 16:55Speaker 3: the English released, the original Italian release, and the Italian
- 16:59Speaker 3: re release of the film. This is coming with a
- 17:04Speaker 3: commentary by Tim Lucas. We also have on disc three one, two, three,
- 17:10Speaker 3: four interviews This is Stacked Dude, and then on disc
- 17:15Speaker 3: four Blu Ray we have Hallmark of Horror, Carnege Deathner's
- 17:20Speaker 3: and Last House Part two video essay. We have the
- 17:24Speaker 3: Artist Cinema, which is an archival featurette featuring assistant director,
- 17:28Speaker 3: his son Lamberto Baba, Mario Baba's biographer, and Joe Dante.
- 17:34Speaker 3: We have some archival interviews. There is a Bava in
- 17:36Speaker 3: the Grindhouse which is Joe Dante on Baba. There's seven
- 17:40Speaker 3: Super Shock intro by Lamberto Baba. Jesus Man, this is
- 17:46Speaker 3: jam packed.
- 17:47Speaker 5: We've been like this year, We've been so fortunate with
- 17:50Speaker 5: the amount of Bava releases that we've gotten so far.
- 17:55Speaker 5: But I don't know this. This definitely is that at
- 17:58Speaker 5: the top.
- 18:00Speaker 3: Well, you know, as we both spent the two hundred
- 18:03Speaker 3: dollars on the Screen Factory set, so this is double
- 18:05Speaker 3: dipping for us. But I'm not that upset. I'm not
- 18:09Speaker 3: as upset as I seem to be when this was
- 18:12Speaker 3: kind of starting to roll out, because there's many pieces
- 18:16Speaker 3: of the Screen Factory Baba release that's not going to
- 18:19Speaker 3: get a four K deluxe release, at least not within
- 18:22Speaker 3: the next couple of years. So I'm still happy to
- 18:25Speaker 3: have that set with the stuff that's not going to
- 18:27Speaker 3: get more attention. Of course, Bay of Blood and what
- 18:31Speaker 3: was the other one, the Day announced Black Sunday Scream Factory.
- 18:35Speaker 3: I just put out Black Sunday on four K. Of
- 18:37Speaker 3: course those are going to get more deluxe treatments, probably
- 18:40Speaker 3: one or two others out of the box.
- 18:43Speaker 5: If there's one film that I'm happy is getting the
- 18:47Speaker 5: boutique treatment, I'm glad it's this one out of any
- 18:51Speaker 5: one of the movies in that box set. I mean,
- 18:54Speaker 5: this is definitely up there for me.
- 18:57Speaker 3: Yeah, this is the one that I kind of when
- 19:01Speaker 3: I when I clicked by on the Screen Factory set,
- 19:03Speaker 3: I knew that Bay of Blood was eventually going to
- 19:05Speaker 3: get some treatment. I was not expecting it to come
- 19:09Speaker 3: from Severn, but I'm very happy it did.
- 19:13Speaker 5: I know. I was gonna say this exceeded my expectations.
- 19:16Speaker 5: I mean, yeah, it's a little frustrating with the screen
- 19:19Speaker 5: Factory set. But if you're not you know, like if
- 19:24Speaker 5: you're just looking for a great way to dive into
- 19:27Speaker 5: his films, I feel like that that's all encompassing. If
- 19:31Speaker 5: you decide to take it to that next level. You know,
- 19:33Speaker 5: if you really are committed, then I guess you could
- 19:36Speaker 5: you know, approach getting either the Screen Factory four K
- 19:39Speaker 5: for Black Sunday or this four K through seven.
- 19:43Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, so huge stuff coming. I can't believe we're
- 19:46Speaker 3: already talking about releases in February.
- 19:51Speaker 5: Yep.
- 19:52Speaker 3: Absolutely insane. But what do you say, man, what do
- 19:55Speaker 3: you think? What do you think about us diving in
- 19:57Speaker 3: this commentary into this novel? You ready to take the
- 19:59Speaker 3: plung I'm ready, all right, man. Well, just a couple
- 20:03Speaker 3: of sources, so everybody knows where we've kind of compiled
- 20:06Speaker 3: research from. We're basing the commentary notes off of two
- 20:11Speaker 3: commentary tracks that are available on the Blu ray release
- 20:15Speaker 3: from Screen Factory. One is with Robert Hiltzick. It's moderated
- 20:19Speaker 3: by Jeff Hayes. And then there was another commentary track
- 20:23Speaker 3: which was older, It was recorded I believe around nineteen
- 20:27Speaker 3: ninety nine two thousand, which is a commentary track with
- 20:31Speaker 3: director Robert Hiltzick and Felssa Rose as well. So I
- 20:34Speaker 3: kind of pulled from both for our notes here. Of course,
- 20:38Speaker 3: the Sleepway Camp novelization written by B. R. Flynn, which
- 20:41Speaker 3: we're going to be discussing in depth, and then as
- 20:44Speaker 3: well as Sleepway Camp, making the movie and Reigniting the
- 20:47Speaker 3: Campfire by aforementioned Jeff Hayes. This is sort of the
- 20:53Speaker 3: ultimate making of the Sleepway Camp franchise. Book. It was
- 20:58Speaker 3: just revised believe last year or beginning of this year.
- 21:05Speaker 3: So we will make sure to have a link below
- 21:06Speaker 3: for anybody wants to have picked up anybody's interested. That
- 21:09Speaker 3: one kind of came like under the radar, Like I
- 21:12Speaker 3: accidentally stumbled across that book, so I'm happy I did.
- 21:17Speaker 3: But let's take the plunge man. The book for the
- 21:24Speaker 3: most part is incredibly accurate obviously to the final movie.
- 21:29Speaker 3: And I don't know which draft of the script this is,
- 21:35Speaker 3: this novelization is pooling from, because as we're going to discuss,
- 21:39Speaker 3: there are many, many, many differences here. Some choices I
- 21:44Speaker 3: think we're better made to suit the movie. Some you know,
- 21:49Speaker 3: there's some that benefit the book, some benefit the movie,
- 21:52Speaker 3: different ways to read into it. One of the kind
- 21:56Speaker 3: of big differences right here is that after the act
- 22:00Speaker 3: we actually have the scene of Peter and Aunt Martha
- 22:05Speaker 3: that happens at the end of the movie when Peter
- 22:10Speaker 3: is standing there with the head wrap on out of
- 22:12Speaker 3: the hospital and she has a bag and pulls out
- 22:17Speaker 3: some women's clothing for him. One thing that's most interesting
- 22:23Speaker 3: in the book is the kind of questioning that Peter
- 22:28Speaker 3: goes through in.
- 22:28Speaker 5: This scene, like the internal dialogue.
- 22:31Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, the question of kind of what's happening.
- 22:36Speaker 3: And that's what's very different about the book compared to
- 22:39Speaker 3: the movie is the book instantly establishes that Angela was Peter.
- 22:47Speaker 3: So there was a brother and a sister. The sister
- 22:51Speaker 3: was killed in a voting accident in the beginning along
- 22:53Speaker 3: with the father, and now Peter, who is the son,
- 22:59Speaker 3: lives has been sent to live with Aunt Martha. And
- 23:03Speaker 3: she clearly has always wanted a girl. I always wanted
- 23:08Speaker 3: a daughter, and now seems to be kind of imprinting
- 23:14Speaker 3: that on Peter, and it.
- 23:16Speaker 5: Takes advantage of the opportunity.
- 23:18Speaker 3: Absolutely takes advantage. She even says like she even says like, oh,
- 23:22Speaker 3: you'd be so happy to have a girl around, to
- 23:24Speaker 3: have a daughter running around, And that completely kind of
- 23:29Speaker 3: changes the perspective heading into the story because in the movie,
- 23:36Speaker 3: that's the big end of reveal. Right, that's the most
- 23:38Speaker 3: infamous moment of sleep Away Camp. It's the very ending
- 23:41Speaker 3: reveal that Angela this whole entire time was a boy.
- 23:47Speaker 3: First couple pages of the book, you already know.
- 23:51Speaker 5: Yeah, I think the way that they structured it. I
- 23:55Speaker 5: thought was it was so interesting to hear, you know,
- 23:59Speaker 5: the thought as like questioning the decision, you know, is
- 24:03Speaker 5: Aunt Martha, the way that she's kind of essentially pitching
- 24:07Speaker 5: this idea to her, you know, does does this work?
- 24:10Speaker 5: Does this not work? I just thought it was it
- 24:14Speaker 5: was very interesting to get Angela's point of view, because
- 24:18Speaker 5: we really don't get that at all in the movie.
- 24:20Speaker 5: I mean, you know, yeah, she doesn't really reveal a
- 24:23Speaker 5: whole lot.
- 24:24Speaker 3: Yeah, And I love the questioning of like do I
- 24:27Speaker 3: get to pick my own name? Love the name Penelope,
- 24:32Speaker 3: but no assigned basically the name Angela, the name of
- 24:38Speaker 3: his dead sister.
- 24:39Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 24:40Speaker 3: Now, and there's only two weeks post accident. This is
- 24:43Speaker 3: no time at all, so so much has happened. And
- 24:48Speaker 3: another piece that I like here is after this scene,
- 24:51Speaker 3: we cut to some years in the future when Angel's
- 24:55Speaker 3: a little older, and there's a scene which she's at
- 24:59Speaker 3: a lem an aid stand outside of Aunt Martha's house
- 25:03Speaker 3: and there is a little boy and his mom walking
- 25:07Speaker 3: across the street and the little boy shouts out like, oh,
- 25:10Speaker 3: there's a weird look at that weird looking girl over there.
- 25:13Speaker 3: And this establishes when we meet Ricky the cousin, Angel's cousin,
- 25:19Speaker 3: and Ricky's instant defense of her instantly right away, And I.
- 25:24Speaker 5: Love that it's on par for his character even in
- 25:27Speaker 5: the movie. I mean, he's very like hot headed, defensive,
- 25:31Speaker 5: you know, protective of his cousin. And I feel like
- 25:36Speaker 5: that the novelization spands on that even before they get
- 25:40Speaker 5: to camp.
- 25:42Speaker 3: Yeah, the novel does a great job of establishing Ricky's
- 25:48Speaker 3: defensive relationship for Angela in the movie. You know, when
- 25:53Speaker 3: when they go to camp, it's not really it's more
- 25:57Speaker 3: of like Ricky's just being a good cousin, making like
- 26:00Speaker 3: she gets through a cabin save you know, let me
- 26:02Speaker 3: interest look like, here's your introduction to the camp. He's
- 26:05Speaker 3: been there before, she hasn't. This establishes a whole different dynamic,
- 26:09Speaker 3: though by how quickly he becomes defensive of her in
- 26:15Speaker 3: this one and.
- 26:15Speaker 5: The reasons why.
- 26:17Speaker 3: Yeah, And it's like the little boy and his mom
- 26:19Speaker 3: is not a threat, this is not a life threatening situation.
- 26:21Speaker 3: But he's really quick to jump into action, yeah, you know,
- 26:26Speaker 3: vocally defend her, which I love very very much. From here,
- 26:31Speaker 3: you know, the book goes on the normal path we have,
- 26:34Speaker 3: uh you know, we have the scene with Ricky and
- 26:37Speaker 3: Angela leaving for camp, the strange interaction with Aunt Martha.
- 26:41Speaker 3: But around this is an interesting little thing that occurs
- 26:45Speaker 3: in the book, which is right before the scene with
- 26:49Speaker 3: Aunt Martha in the house. Angela is out back in
- 26:51Speaker 3: the yard and she is scared by a little snake
- 26:55Speaker 3: who comes out of the garden. And that's that's all
- 27:00Speaker 3: we find out. She gets scared of the snake, she
- 27:03Speaker 3: goes in to get ready for leave. We have the
- 27:05Speaker 3: scene with Aunt Martha, which Aunt Martha's character is so
- 27:08Speaker 3: quirky in the in the movie. In the book, it's
- 27:12Speaker 3: just weird, Like she is so strange with the pauses,
- 27:17Speaker 3: the speaking away from them. It's very very strange.
- 27:21Speaker 5: How do they explain it? Like she basically has to
- 27:23Speaker 5: like restart or something. It's like a computer.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Yeh.
- 27:28Speaker 3: She like looks off and freezes for a second and
- 27:30Speaker 3: then all right.
- 27:32Speaker 6: You know.
- 27:34Speaker 3: Yeah. So once once Angela and Ricky are sent off
- 27:38Speaker 3: the camp, Aunt Martha makes her way around the house
- 27:41Speaker 3: into the backyard and back there she discovers the very
- 27:46Speaker 3: snake with his head crushed. Little foreshadowing. I was just
- 27:51Speaker 3: about to say that, yeah, little foreshadowing. It's so minor,
- 27:56Speaker 3: you know, and in the movie it would be kind
- 27:58Speaker 3: of it'd be like, okay, whatever, I can see why
- 28:02Speaker 3: it isn't in the final movie, but you.
- 28:04Speaker 5: Would gloss over it probably.
- 28:06Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it's It's just one of those little things
- 28:08Speaker 3: that I think is a cool addition. And one thing
- 28:13Speaker 3: I do want to say is the arrival to uh
- 28:17Speaker 3: do you say, is it aer whack camp Arawhack? Yeah, okay,
- 28:23Speaker 3: I was making sure my pronunciation was Okay. The arrival
- 28:27Speaker 3: to camp Arowhack, when we're kind of introduced to Mel
- 28:30Speaker 3: and a bunch of our characters, including the kitchen staff.
- 28:34Speaker 3: One of them is already played by Owen Hughes. The
- 28:37Speaker 3: other is Ben, played by Robert Earl Jones, the father
- 28:41Speaker 3: of James Earl Jones, and it's it's here's what's funny.
- 28:47Speaker 3: On the commentary track with Robert and Felyssa Rose, they
- 28:52Speaker 3: begin talking about Owen Hughes, who played Artie, and how
- 28:57Speaker 3: incredible his audition was. Speaks about how quiet and calm
- 29:03Speaker 3: his nature was, and how he would just kind of
- 29:05Speaker 3: spend time when he wasn't shooting reading and it's so
- 29:11Speaker 3: funny to be considering his character is an absolute fucking
- 29:14Speaker 3: creep in this movie. He was trying to get dialed in.
- 29:20Speaker 3: So gross dude, like his dialogue with the kids running
- 29:23Speaker 3: in and oh, it's really nasty man, really gross, like.
- 29:30Speaker 5: It hasn't aged, well it died.
- 29:32Speaker 3: Well, I don't think something like that. I don't think
- 29:35Speaker 3: something like that begins well.
- 29:37Speaker 6: No, no, no, so just a very you know, for
- 29:43Speaker 6: the most part, the movie is not as mean as
- 29:48Speaker 6: the book is.
- 29:50Speaker 3: This is kind of like the gross part. The Already
- 29:54Speaker 3: as a character is grosser than anything else that happens
- 29:57Speaker 3: in this movie.
- 30:00Speaker 5: Well, and even they highlight Ben being a little bit
- 30:04Speaker 5: more aware or they they kind of expand on that
- 30:08Speaker 5: that he's had knowledge of what Already's been doing for
- 30:11Speaker 5: some time. And I thought that was interesting because I
- 30:15Speaker 5: don't think that they really elude it, Like they don't
- 30:18Speaker 5: allude to that at all in the movie. Yeah, not really,
- 30:22Speaker 5: you know, I don't know. I mean, that's just as bad.
- 30:29Speaker 3: So gross dude. And in this moment too, I really
- 30:34Speaker 3: appreciate Felyssa Rose's input just on some of the characters
- 30:38Speaker 3: and one thing that she talks about with the introduction
- 30:40Speaker 3: of Judy played by Karen Fields is just how wonderful
- 30:44Speaker 3: she was and how close of her friendship they have,
- 30:47Speaker 3: and just a little future tease if you're listening to
- 30:50Speaker 3: this on Saturday, the day that that this releases, and
- 30:55Speaker 3: only a couple of days from now, we will be
- 30:57Speaker 3: releasing an interview with a lot of the crew or
- 31:00Speaker 3: a lot of the casts from Sleepway Camp, Cairen Fields
- 31:02Speaker 3: being one of them. M So make sure if you're
- 31:05Speaker 3: listening this the first weekend it's out, look forward to
- 31:07Speaker 3: that episode coming soon. She was lovely as expected.
- 31:12Speaker 5: We're aw awesome. That was a fun interview.
- 31:15Speaker 3: Yeah, it was incredible. This is one of my favorite
- 31:20Speaker 3: little additions to the book, which is the Campfire chapter,
- 31:26Speaker 3: because this introduces something called the horned Starpent, which is
- 31:32Speaker 3: a creature that lives in the lake at Camp Aarowak,
- 31:37Speaker 3: and it's described as quote unquote, so big nobody's ever seen.
- 31:44Speaker 3: Both ends and later on it said quote unquote that
- 31:49Speaker 3: it is a shape shifter that can look like a
- 31:52Speaker 3: girl in the water, lowering people until they're close enough
- 31:55Speaker 3: to be snatched up by the beast. You know a little,
- 32:02Speaker 3: it's relevant, it's relevant.
- 32:05Speaker 5: I think the shape shifter aspect about it. I thought
- 32:08Speaker 5: that was interesting.
- 32:10Speaker 3: Yeah, it's interesting. The the luring aspect. It's the because
- 32:18Speaker 3: that's sort of the idea of a siren, right the
- 32:22Speaker 3: sirens song beautiful lures you in, and the siren is
- 32:25Speaker 3: actually an ugly, hideous creature that's going to kill you.
- 32:28Speaker 5: And the reoccurring theme about the serpent. We get that
- 32:32Speaker 5: beginning of the book with a snake. Now you get it,
- 32:36Speaker 5: you know, brought up in a campfire tale. Yep.
- 32:38Speaker 3: Yeah, it's something that kind of I don't know why
- 32:43Speaker 3: this didn't end up in the movie. I feel like
- 32:46Speaker 3: this would have been, you know, just kind of a
- 32:48Speaker 3: fun piece of lore, and you would have gotten that
- 32:51Speaker 3: campfire scene as well. So I'm kind of curious why
- 32:55Speaker 3: this was, if this was in the original, if this
- 32:58Speaker 3: was full for individual screenplay, why this was removed. But
- 33:03Speaker 3: you know, besides horns serpents, one thing I do want
- 33:06Speaker 3: to talk about in the movie is this terrible, terrible
- 33:13Speaker 3: scene when Angela, who hasn't eaten in three days that
- 33:17Speaker 3: she's been a camp is brought into the kitchen to
- 33:22Speaker 3: try to find something to eat, and she's put under
- 33:24Speaker 3: the guidance of Artie, aforementioned Artie, and she accompanies him
- 33:32Speaker 3: in the walk in pantry I think it is. I
- 33:36Speaker 3: think it's a pantry, and where he proceeds to begin
- 33:40Speaker 3: unbuttoning his pants before Ricky steps in.
- 33:44Speaker 5: You know, trying to give her a different type of snack.
- 33:48Speaker 3: I guess, so gross, so gross. Please don't let this
- 33:53Speaker 3: distract you from the big ass pot that Artie is
- 33:56Speaker 3: cooking corn in, or boiling corn in.
- 34:00Speaker 5: The water was too high, dude, it's so.
- 34:03Speaker 3: That pot had to be five foot tall. That is
- 34:07Speaker 3: so tall he had to get on a bladder to
- 34:10Speaker 3: put salt in the.
- 34:12Speaker 5: In the pot custom made for camp.
- 34:15Speaker 3: It's ridiculous, dude? Is that? And then if you look
- 34:17Speaker 3: at the amount of corn that's next to him, that
- 34:20Speaker 3: amount of corn does not equal needing that much water
- 34:24Speaker 3: in the pot, So who knows? Director Robert Hiltsik said that, yeah,
- 34:32Speaker 3: they had to custom build the pot, so you couldn't
- 34:35Speaker 3: just go and buy this mammoth of a water pot. Unfortunately.
- 34:41Speaker 3: Oh man, bro, imagine pulling that out at the function
- 34:45Speaker 3: the family's over. You're like, I'll get the water boiling.
- 34:47Speaker 5: You just pull that guy out twenty four hours later.
- 34:51Speaker 3: Oh my, oh dude, I don't even think about how
- 34:53Speaker 3: long that would take for the water boil. Think about that. Yeah,
- 34:59Speaker 3: Alarti's death scene this is uh. I want to talk
- 35:04Speaker 3: about how it's done in the movie because the the
- 35:09Speaker 3: incredible makeup effects done by Edward French in this movie
- 35:14Speaker 3: are stunning. But there's an interesting little change here in
- 35:17Speaker 3: the fate of Artie's character between the book and the movie.
- 35:21Speaker 3: In the movie, he's alive. He's brought out of the
- 35:25Speaker 3: kitchen alive. In the book, he's dead, like absolutely dead,
- 35:31Speaker 3: no question.
- 35:32Speaker 5: The amount of detail that we get from that section,
- 35:38Speaker 5: I'm like, I think this guy's better off de ed.
- 35:42Speaker 3: So gross. And you know, a lot of the effects
- 35:46Speaker 3: of sleep Away Camp are aftermath. You know, there's not
- 35:51Speaker 3: a lot of dirt. Well, no, I lied. There are
- 35:54Speaker 3: some incredible kind of effects showing the direct action resulting
- 36:00Speaker 3: in the death of a character. But the aftermath moments
- 36:04Speaker 3: in this are exceptionally well done. There's three off the
- 36:09Speaker 3: top of my head that are incredible, this being one
- 36:13Speaker 3: of them using the bladder effects to make the blisters
- 36:19Speaker 3: move in the skin bubble. It's very, very nasty.
- 36:25Speaker 5: I can only imagine what the novelization like the amount
- 36:29Speaker 5: of detail that goes into that scene, how that would
- 36:31Speaker 5: have translated to film. Yeah, you know, he is describing
- 36:37Speaker 5: basically like as his eyes basically are like melted because
- 36:42Speaker 5: of the hot water. Yeah.
- 36:45Speaker 3: I mean, if any character deserves this level of encruciating
- 36:50Speaker 3: that's fair, you know. And judging by the size of
- 36:55Speaker 3: that pot, I would probably say there was one hundred
- 36:57Speaker 3: gallons of boiling water. So it's a lot of water, man,
- 37:06Speaker 3: It's a whole lot of water. Not many notes from
- 37:11Speaker 3: Robert during the commentary track, good time to kind of
- 37:16Speaker 3: say these commentary tracks weren't exactly the most insightful, So
- 37:19Speaker 3: I'm happy we've had the novel to expand our conversation
- 37:24Speaker 3: a lot. This would be a very short episode if
- 37:26Speaker 3: we were just using what we learned in the commentary,
- 37:31Speaker 3: So very happy to have this. And then we have
- 37:36Speaker 3: the introduction of if you listen to the upcoming sleep
- 37:40Speaker 3: Away Camp Cast interview, Thomas Van Dell as Mike in
- 37:45Speaker 3: the rec hall, he is on with Karen Fields, and well,
- 37:49Speaker 3: there's a couple more that that I'll talk about as
- 37:51Speaker 3: we go on, but yeah, Thomas Vandell is on our
- 37:54Speaker 3: interview coming up. And one thing that I want to
- 37:58Speaker 3: talk about here, just in the movie with you is
- 38:02Speaker 3: Karen Fields. Her performance as Judy is incredible, man. I
- 38:11Speaker 3: And this is not post speaking with her excitement just
- 38:17Speaker 3: boosting it up in my brain. This is genuinely paying
- 38:22Speaker 3: attention to her reactions and her face. She is like,
- 38:29Speaker 3: I've heard this character, this character described as she's a bitch, right,
- 38:34Speaker 3: that's the common you know, if you were to be like, oh,
- 38:38Speaker 3: Karen Fields as Judy the bitch, it would.
- 38:42Speaker 5: She seals the show.
- 38:45Speaker 3: Oh my god.
- 38:46Speaker 5: Yeah, and especially given you know, I don't know, she
- 38:53Speaker 5: just is. So I can't imagine anyone else playing this
- 38:57Speaker 5: character because she owned the role and definitely one of
- 39:03Speaker 5: the more memorable characters that we get out of any
- 39:05Speaker 5: of the sleep Boy Camp films by far. Yeah.
- 39:08Speaker 3: Yeah, it's It's funny how I actually kind of when
- 39:14Speaker 3: we were prepping for this and I was rewatching sleep
- 39:16Speaker 3: Boy Camp, I remember Judy before I remembered Angela. Like Angela,
- 39:21Speaker 3: I was like, of course I remember Angela, but I
- 39:23Speaker 3: was like, where's Judya, Like where.
- 39:27Speaker 5: Iconic?
- 39:28Speaker 3: Absolutely iconic, man. And in this scene in the in
- 39:31Speaker 3: the movie when when everyone's hanging out in the rec hall,
- 39:35Speaker 3: we have the first convers or the kind of the
- 39:37Speaker 3: first real conversation between Ricky's friend Paul and Angela. And
- 39:42Speaker 3: at this point, you know, Angela hasn't spoken in three days.
- 39:46Speaker 3: She probably still hasn't eaten after already's really disgusting offer.
- 39:53Speaker 3: So Paul sits down with Angela and they're talking, and
- 39:58Speaker 3: Judy is sitting across the way in between two guys
- 40:01Speaker 3: and her facial, just the performance in her face. I
- 40:07Speaker 3: don't need anybody to explain anything to me. All I
- 40:10Speaker 3: need to do is see the face and the expression,
- 40:13Speaker 3: and I know exactly what's going on in her head.
- 40:16Speaker 3: Maybe not to the level that she's actually thinking, but
- 40:19Speaker 3: it's incredible. Man, this whole movie. She she didn't have
- 40:22Speaker 3: to speak a word, and I could have understood everything
- 40:26Speaker 3: that she was thinking at every moment by how well
- 40:28Speaker 3: her physical performances.
- 40:30Speaker 5: There's so much sass, it's so.
- 40:32Speaker 3: Much it's out of control. What did you think of
- 40:37Speaker 3: if you first of all, when you were at sleep
- 40:42Speaker 3: away camp? Man, did you ever go skinny dipping with
- 40:44Speaker 3: eight dudes?
- 40:46Speaker 5: Nope?
- 40:46Speaker 3: All right, I just wanted to.
- 40:47Speaker 5: Make Now that we've cleared that up.
- 40:54Speaker 3: The book, we're getting to the lake scene with Kenny
- 40:59Speaker 3: and Leslie, and one thing I really love about the
- 41:05Speaker 3: commentary track and kind of the conversation with Tom Mandela
- 41:08Speaker 3: is quickly the fight in the rec hall between Mike
- 41:11Speaker 3: and and Ricky and Ricky's big ass hat and how
- 41:18Speaker 3: they kind of riled up the extras and almost like
- 41:20Speaker 3: a real fight started. Jeff Hayes brings us up into
- 41:23Speaker 3: commentary track and Robert Hiltsick just kind of like laughs
- 41:26Speaker 3: it off and gives no input. So very happy for
- 41:32Speaker 3: the you know, the the great insight by this man.
- 41:35Speaker 3: During this commentary track, Kenny's death scene on the lake,
- 41:43Speaker 3: he gets Leslie to go out into the lake with him.
- 41:47Speaker 3: This is where we have the return of the horned Serpent.
- 41:52Speaker 3: And what's interesting about this is in the book he
- 41:59Speaker 3: brings us back up and he asked Leslie something really interesting.
- 42:04Speaker 3: He asks if it completely changes into a girl or
- 42:09Speaker 3: if just parts of it change And the exact quote
- 42:13Speaker 3: is does the head and part of the body turn
- 42:15Speaker 3: into a girl while the rest is a snake? And
- 42:18Speaker 3: this is kind of interesting, like how did you kind
- 42:20Speaker 3: of perceive this this dialogue here?
- 42:25Speaker 5: I mean again, I think it's foreshadowing to obviously where
- 42:30Speaker 5: the well we know more in the novel compared to
- 42:35Speaker 5: the movie. Yeah, but I think that this is just
- 42:39Speaker 5: further alluding to the secrets that's being kept by Angela,
- 42:44Speaker 5: and obviously, you know, Ricky is pretty crucial to being
- 42:49Speaker 5: able to keep that secret. So I think that the
- 42:55Speaker 5: novel does a great job at adding some symbolism into like,
- 43:03Speaker 5: let's just say, the script, for the sake of the novel.
- 43:06Speaker 5: But I think there was a lot that they could
- 43:09Speaker 5: have taken from this and potentially used it with the
- 43:12Speaker 5: actual film, because we don't get any of this. I mean,
- 43:15Speaker 5: you get the climactic ending. The most probably notable part
- 43:19Speaker 5: of the entire film is that, you know, basically twist ending.
- 43:24Speaker 5: But this I felt like it was. It's interesting, it's
- 43:28Speaker 5: thought provoking, you know, for the sake of the novel,
- 43:31Speaker 5: you know.
- 43:32Speaker 3: Well, I think this is where you really kind of
- 43:36Speaker 3: think about the difference between the two mediums, which is
- 43:39Speaker 3: a book and reading versus visual For suspense reasons and
- 43:47Speaker 3: shock value, the approach to go to remove a lot
- 43:53Speaker 3: of the kind of what's the word I'm looking for,
- 43:58Speaker 3: like to keep the mystery alive in the movie works
- 44:02Speaker 3: best for that medium, right, especially nineteen eighty four, people
- 44:06Speaker 3: just want to see a slasher film. And it plays
- 44:09Speaker 3: out exactly how it needs to twenty twenty five, forty
- 44:13Speaker 3: one years after this movie comes out to get this novelization.
- 44:19Speaker 3: And if you're a fan of Sleepwy Camp, I think
- 44:21Speaker 3: you're gonna appreciate you don't need to know the mystery anymore.
- 44:24Speaker 3: You know the mystery, you know who Angela is, You've
- 44:27Speaker 3: seen the movie. Now, how what's most important here is
- 44:32Speaker 3: the internal dialogue that's happening in characters and the perspectives
- 44:36Speaker 3: and the narration. That's what really brings this book up
- 44:41Speaker 3: as far as value to me, as far as what
- 44:44Speaker 3: I wanted to get out of it. And this is
- 44:46Speaker 3: just one of those things. And I remember reading this
- 44:49Speaker 3: and just kind of stopping for a second and just
- 44:52Speaker 3: thinking about it, thinking about its relation to the character
- 44:55Speaker 3: and what's happening in the story, and I just thought
- 44:58Speaker 3: it was interesting. And this leads to Kenny's death scene.
- 45:03Speaker 3: I'm seen Leslie escapes, he flips the boat, the canoe over,
- 45:08Speaker 3: He's attacked under the canoe.
- 45:10Speaker 5: Poor guy was just trying to get it in.
- 45:12Speaker 3: He was trying so hard. Man. This leads to another
- 45:18Speaker 3: incredible after math effect, when which first of all, the
- 45:26Speaker 3: lifeguard in the morning discovering the mess that these kids
- 45:29Speaker 3: have left by putting all of the chairs in the
- 45:32Speaker 3: lake and the table in the lake, pissed off, throwing
- 45:37Speaker 3: shit out of the water.
- 45:42Speaker 5: Heated.
- 45:42Speaker 3: Man, dude, it's so funny. It's funny too because I
- 45:46Speaker 3: was like at thirty four, I remember being like, oh man,
- 45:50Speaker 3: how annoying for those kids to do that, And then
- 45:51Speaker 3: I was like, I would have done that. I would
- 45:53Speaker 3: have done We have the discovery of Kenny's body, which
- 45:59Speaker 3: is in the canoe but it's on shore. It's so
- 46:03Speaker 3: incredibly gross, dude. The the aftermath, the you can tell
- 46:09Speaker 3: that there's like a bit of like a water log,
- 46:11Speaker 3: there's blistering, there's clearly the wounds from the attack. But
- 46:16Speaker 3: they just kind of top it off with the snake
- 46:19Speaker 3: coming out of his mouth. Oh it's really.
- 46:23Speaker 5: Because that's that's the sequence where he gets hit over
- 46:28Speaker 5: the back of the head with the ore, right, yeah,
- 46:30Speaker 5: yeah yeah. And it's it's like multiple times where they
- 46:33Speaker 5: start describing like just how extensive you know, the the
- 46:38Speaker 5: damages from that, and uh yeah, that's uh one way
- 46:45Speaker 5: to describe it. That's for sure.
- 46:46Speaker 3: It's really gross, man, really really gross. And from here
- 46:51Speaker 3: I think what's interesting is that there is a chapter
- 46:55Speaker 3: of the book and this is you know when I
- 46:57Speaker 3: was talking about the spoiler warning earlier there there there's
- 46:59Speaker 3: pretty significant changes with things like this. Where in between
- 47:06Speaker 3: where the movie does the volleyball scene and the kind
- 47:09Speaker 3: of date between Paul and Angela going to the movie
- 47:12Speaker 3: at the rec hall, there's a chapter which we find
- 47:16Speaker 3: Ben Robert L. Jones, who worked in the kitchen, and
- 47:20Speaker 3: he's in this small shack in the woods drinking a
- 47:23Speaker 3: bottle of whiskey and he's thinking tragically about the removal
- 47:27Speaker 3: of Kenny's body in the morning and what has happened
- 47:30Speaker 3: to Art. And as he's in there drinking, a figure
- 47:34Speaker 3: begins approaching him. And the book does a really good
- 47:37Speaker 3: job at kind of creating this visual, which is that
- 47:39Speaker 3: the door on this shack is loose, so the wind
- 47:42Speaker 3: is able to kind of blow the door open, and
- 47:44Speaker 3: he's able to get glimpses of what's happening outside of
- 47:47Speaker 3: the door due to the door. It's it's super creepy,
- 47:50Speaker 3: and he sees a figure out there and he is
- 47:55Speaker 3: killed by the bottle of whiskey. The bottle is picked
- 47:59Speaker 3: up and hits him as the head on the temple
- 48:02Speaker 3: and the bottle breaks when that happens, and then proceeds
- 48:06Speaker 3: to get his face slashed open with a broken shard
- 48:11Speaker 3: of the bottle before getting stabbed in the stomach and killed. Yeah,
- 48:17Speaker 3: this is a character where we don't know his fate
- 48:19Speaker 3: in the movie, you know, we don't know what happens
- 48:22Speaker 3: to him.
- 48:26Speaker 5: I did like this me too. It was I don't know.
- 48:33Speaker 5: I think for this novelization, like the way that they
- 48:38Speaker 5: approached it with, you know, giving us a little bit
- 48:41Speaker 5: more to work with the film itself. It's a pretty
- 48:45Speaker 5: quick watch when you go back and revisit it, and
- 48:49Speaker 5: I like that. You know, this opened the door for
- 48:51Speaker 5: being able to at least be able to get like
- 48:55Speaker 5: some definitive answers as to what happened with some of
- 48:57Speaker 5: these characters.
- 48:59Speaker 3: It feels more the book feels much more complete because.
- 49:01Speaker 5: You have that's a great way to put up You have.
- 49:04Speaker 3: These characters, these these ends getting tied up, you know,
- 49:08Speaker 3: and it just makes it feel more cohesive and more comprehensive.
- 49:13Speaker 3: There's not just characters disappearing, because at this point in
- 49:16Speaker 3: the book too, campers are disappearing because they're being picked
- 49:20Speaker 3: up by parents and mel is terribly afraid that he's
- 49:24Speaker 3: going to lose the camp. I mean he's already financially
- 49:27Speaker 3: not in a great place with the camp. Now kids
- 49:30Speaker 3: are dying on his watch. And that is explored in
- 49:34Speaker 3: this book much more than it is the movie. It's
- 49:36Speaker 3: brought up in the movie, but it's much much, much
- 49:38Speaker 3: deeper in the in this novelization. And I have to
- 49:43Speaker 3: come back to you because I've never been to sleep
- 49:45Speaker 3: Boy Camp. I've been to sleepovers at my friend's house
- 49:49Speaker 3: a couple of times. But did you ever put shaving
- 49:52Speaker 3: cream in someone's hands before, and you know, take all
- 49:55Speaker 3: their face?
- 49:57Speaker 5: No? No, I mean the campfire, being down by a lake.
- 50:05Speaker 5: I mean that all that is pretty spot on. You know,
- 50:08Speaker 5: having like you know, daily activities being in like like
- 50:15Speaker 5: a haul to eat, you know, meals together. That spot on.
- 50:20Speaker 5: You know, you would have trying to think of like
- 50:25Speaker 5: I mean, they would have like certain assignments or you know,
- 50:28Speaker 5: sports you could do during the day. But no, I
- 50:32Speaker 5: can't say that the you know, the shaving cream or
- 50:36Speaker 5: what did they do for the set? What is it? Is?
- 50:40Speaker 3: It? Sit up with Mozart, Yes, into a bare ass.
- 50:45Speaker 5: There there was no urine balloons that were being thrown
- 50:47Speaker 5: at anybody.
- 50:50Speaker 3: Yeah, it's very very funny stuff. And in the commentary track,
- 50:56Speaker 3: Robert Heltstick talks about, you know how the Practical Jokes
- 50:59Speaker 3: played a camp and where we're essentially based on his
- 51:02Speaker 3: camp experience, which was actually at the camp where this
- 51:06Speaker 3: was filmed. He actually stayed at he attended camp as
- 51:10Speaker 3: a kid in New York. I thought that, Yeah, very
- 51:14Speaker 3: very cool, very cool. In between this, there's a couple
- 51:18Speaker 3: of things that happen. You have the lakeside scene with Meg,
- 51:25Speaker 3: who is one of the camp Is it a counselor
- 51:28Speaker 3: is that what? Is that what they're considered?
- 51:30Speaker 5: I believe so.
- 51:31Speaker 3: Yeah, And of course Meg being played by Catherine Cammy,
- 51:35Speaker 3: who is in our Sleepaway Camp Cast interview episode. If
- 51:40Speaker 3: you we're gonna be waiting for that to come out.
- 51:43Speaker 3: A couple of days after you're listening to this, you
- 51:46Speaker 3: have this lakeside scene where Angela is not participating and
- 51:53Speaker 3: talking to Paul on the side, and this is the
- 51:59Speaker 3: second time that this is happened to happen at the
- 52:01Speaker 3: volleyball moment, and Meg is such a bitch in the seat. Yeah, yeah, mean,
- 52:10Speaker 3: this is so mean. And then we also have a
- 52:13Speaker 3: urine balloon that gets thrown at a at Angela. Does
- 52:18Speaker 3: the movie I can't remember. Does the movie specify that
- 52:21Speaker 3: it was a urine balloon or is that only in
- 52:22Speaker 3: the book.
- 52:23Speaker 5: I think it was only in the book.
- 52:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I don't.
- 52:26Speaker 5: I don't remember that actually being a thing at all
- 52:30Speaker 5: in the movie.
- 52:31Speaker 3: Yeah. I thought in the movie it was just a
- 52:32Speaker 3: water balloon. I took it as and recomen kissed because
- 52:37Speaker 3: they threw it at Angela of all people.
- 52:39Speaker 5: But didn't it get in her eyes too? Like, weren't
- 52:41Speaker 5: they describing that, like when when she gets hit with it.
- 52:44Speaker 5: I'm thinking to myself, like, I don't think there's enough
- 52:47Speaker 5: water in the world to get that out of my eyes.
- 52:50Speaker 3: I don't think there's enough. There's enough other books I
- 52:54Speaker 3: will read to get.
- 52:54Speaker 5: This out of I need a palate cleanser.
- 52:59Speaker 3: It's so gross, man, so gross. But it gets paid
- 53:02Speaker 3: off because we get to Billy's death scene. Who Billy
- 53:07Speaker 3: was involved in the throwing of the pissed water balloon yep,
- 53:12Speaker 3: and this was touted as Robert Hiltzik's favorite kill scene
- 53:16Speaker 3: in the movie. Robert decides to go to the bathroom
- 53:23Speaker 3: in the movie, he just simply goes to, you know,
- 53:26Speaker 3: take the Browns to the super Bowl in the movie.
- 53:29Speaker 3: In the book, he goes to do some other stuff,
- 53:33Speaker 3: some more private things in the bathroom, and Angela drops
- 53:40Speaker 3: a beehive on his head. Now, mind you, Billy is
- 53:45Speaker 3: severely allergic to bees, which brings me to a random
- 53:51Speaker 3: side tangent, which is this reminds me of the guy
- 53:54Speaker 3: on TikTok, who is the very honest, overly helpful employee
- 54:00Speaker 3: that's been popping up where it shows him working at
- 54:03Speaker 3: like a target and a guy walks up with you know,
- 54:05Speaker 3: an ant like ant trap yea, and the guy goes, hey, man,
- 54:09Speaker 3: is this good for ants? Meaning which I would interpret
- 54:12Speaker 3: as is good to take care of ants? And the
- 54:14Speaker 3: guy goes, no, bad for ants. That's going to kill them.
- 54:18Speaker 3: Not not good for them, not good. And the guy's like,
- 54:21Speaker 3: so it is good for dants and he's like, no, no,
- 54:23Speaker 3: that's gonna hurt him. That's really good. That's gonna kill them.
- 54:27Speaker 5: He's being honest.
- 54:28Speaker 3: Just reminds me of that's random side tangent. But yeah,
- 54:32Speaker 3: this is like this death is the funniest because I
- 54:37Speaker 3: know he gets a whole hive dropped on him, and
- 54:41Speaker 3: you know, he started getting stung. The hell never heard
- 54:44Speaker 3: of the Fortunately, unfortunately for him, there is no other
- 54:48Speaker 3: escape out of a toilet saw, you know, besides opening
- 54:52Speaker 3: the door. Didn't slide underneath or anything.
- 54:54Speaker 5: He's stuck there.
- 54:55Speaker 3: Just saying this was really cool though, because they do
- 55:01Speaker 3: talk for a minute about how Ed French, the makeup
- 55:04Speaker 3: effects designer, shot the aftermath, which is the shot of
- 55:10Speaker 3: his face being covered in real bees, which they constructed
- 55:14Speaker 3: this glass case to actually shoot this this moment through
- 55:19Speaker 3: that way. Nobody else got stung, which I thought was
- 55:22Speaker 3: really cool, especially for kind of a mid budget slasher
- 55:25Speaker 3: film coming out of the early eighties. I thought that
- 55:29Speaker 3: was very very cool. Are you afraid of bees?
- 55:35Speaker 5: I used to be when I was younger, Like, I
- 55:37Speaker 5: wouldn't say afraid of them, but I think growing up,
- 55:42Speaker 5: I think I got sung like twelve times, not at once.
- 55:45Speaker 5: You kept count I did Lea's traumatic.
- 55:51Speaker 3: I'm not gonna let this happen again, and proceeds eleven
- 55:53Speaker 3: more times.
- 55:54Speaker 5: It can't happen a thirteenth time.
- 55:57Speaker 3: That's the one that's gonna get you.
- 55:59Speaker 5: Man.
- 55:59Speaker 3: You better keep an eye out. Yeah, man, when when
- 56:01Speaker 3: summer rolls around. Man, you better be extra cautious that
- 56:04Speaker 3: thirteenth beasting is probably he couldn't some damage, just saying.
- 56:09Speaker 5: I don't want to end up like Billy.
- 56:11Speaker 3: Yeah, don't, Please don't end up like Billy. We have
- 56:15Speaker 3: a really interesting expansion here. This is really kind of
- 56:20Speaker 3: when the book, you know, really begins to own some
- 56:23Speaker 3: of the major differences from compared to the movie. Takes
- 56:27Speaker 3: a detour, does take a detour, and this detour has
- 56:31Speaker 3: Ricky's POV of him actually watching Angela drop the beehive
- 56:37Speaker 3: onto Billy.
- 56:38Speaker 5: Mm hmm.
- 56:40Speaker 3: Now we've just stat we know for a fact that's
- 56:42Speaker 3: Angela now because Ricky watched it. But we know that
- 56:45Speaker 3: Ricky knows that Angela is doing this, and he doesn't
- 56:48Speaker 3: know about the other deaths or doesn't say that he does.
- 56:52Speaker 3: This is the first time he's actually seen Angela commit this.
- 56:56Speaker 5: You could say the other Angela.
- 56:58Speaker 3: Yes. Well, this is where it really gets interesting because
- 57:03Speaker 3: this chapter ends with him saying to himself, quote unquote,
- 57:08Speaker 3: now I really have to protect Angela, which I thought
- 57:12Speaker 3: was a great way to kind of end this. This
- 57:15Speaker 3: discovery that we've come across that Ricky has seen this.
- 57:19Speaker 5: It takes on a new meaning.
- 57:20Speaker 3: Basically, it does. It does, but this goes even further
- 57:25Speaker 3: to have Ricky making a phone call to his mom,
- 57:30Speaker 3: Aunt Martha to Angela, asking about Grandpa Peter, and without
- 57:38Speaker 3: getting too much detail, we learned that Grandpa Peter at
- 57:42Speaker 3: some point was locked away. He was put into a
- 57:46Speaker 3: mental home, a mental facility, and we learned that he
- 57:50Speaker 3: was accused of killing a few people. And this is
- 57:53Speaker 3: kind of establishing a little bit of you know, history,
- 57:57Speaker 3: maybe a little bit of like pas ass down of
- 58:01Speaker 3: something in the family. We don't really know. It's questioned
- 58:06Speaker 3: a couple of times where it's kind of like, is
- 58:10Speaker 3: this something that has been like passed down onto somebody
- 58:17Speaker 3: like Angela.
- 58:18Speaker 5: It would explain a lot about Aunt Martha.
- 58:23Speaker 3: Every time she restarts. Grandpa Peter kills somebody, I swear.
- 58:32Speaker 3: And over the course of the next couple of chapters
- 58:34Speaker 3: of the book, there's there's some other things that I
- 58:38Speaker 3: really liked, one being you know, mel kind of coming
- 58:42Speaker 3: to the understanding of the deaths are not accidents, and
- 58:45Speaker 3: he kind of leads on that he knows who the
- 58:47Speaker 3: killer is, or he suspects who the killer is. But
- 58:50Speaker 3: then we also get a brief moment where Angela talks
- 58:54Speaker 3: about the other Angela, which is essentially a side of
- 58:59Speaker 3: her that takes over and is much more powerful.
- 59:04Speaker 5: And we get little like tidbits of the narration from
- 59:08Speaker 5: the other Angela, which I thought that that was a
- 59:10Speaker 5: really nice touch to the novel.
- 59:13Speaker 3: I completely agree, and I always like this idea because
- 59:19Speaker 3: this is something that I think historically for a long
- 59:22Speaker 3: time when it comes to killers, has been very well documented,
- 59:26Speaker 3: which is that they kind of become a different person.
- 59:28Speaker 3: There's another side that comes out. So this isn't this
- 59:31Speaker 3: isn't out of touch with reality. This is very much,
- 59:35Speaker 3: I think in the in the plane of a reasonable
- 59:41Speaker 3: kind of approach to explanation of what's happening with a character.
- 59:47Speaker 5: Here, even when Ricky sees when Angela is putting the
- 59:53Speaker 5: beehive in for like Billy's death scene, doesn't he describe
- 59:58Speaker 5: as she kind of has like this glazed overlook to her,
- 1:00:01Speaker 5: like this wide eye, glazed over look to her, where
- 1:00:05Speaker 5: she's just like kind of checked out when things are
- 1:00:08Speaker 5: going on, if I recall correctly.
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: Yeah, for people listening, the best visual I can give
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: you is Angela's appearance at the end of the movie.
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: During the reveal that final shot on the beach, that's
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: kind of what's taking over her, except she's not just
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: standing there like she is on the beach.
- 1:00:28Speaker 5: It's more the other Angela seems like it's more dominant,
- 1:00:31Speaker 5: like almost animalistic.
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, because Angela talks about the overwhelming anger and
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: reigned or anger and rage that she simply surrenders to
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: while quote unquote angela other Angela grows to monstrous proportions.
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: So this other Angela is incredibly powerful and takes over
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: without mercy, just full scares the shit out of shy
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: little Angela and just takes over this other Angela, which
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: I thought was really cool. I really, I really dug
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: that that this reality character really did. And then there's
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: this this great moment that I had to bring up,
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: which is when Angela is meeting up with Paul, and
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: there's a moment when when when Paul accidentally scares her,
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: and the book says quote unquote bullies were scary, gender
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: and sexual identity were scary. Paul was not Paul.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: It's like.
- 1:01:35Speaker 3: Such a great little such a great little you know,
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: just great.
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: There's a little moments of uh, I'm sure you caught
- 1:01:43Speaker 5: it throughout the novel, Like there's a little moments of
- 1:01:45Speaker 5: like dark comedy throughout.
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: All over the place.
- 1:01:49Speaker 5: Here, Yeah, thought it was clever.
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: What's funny is that this is coming from the perspective
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: of of Angela. So she said he bullies are scary.
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: You know, she doesn't want to be bullied. She is
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: currently fighting a gender and sexual identity kind of going
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: through the midst of one that's scary to her. But
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: Paul is not Paul is just Paul. I'm not scared
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: to Paul at all. There was an interesting commentary note
- 1:02:19Speaker 3: here just talking about the score and kind of the
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: size of it. Jeff Hayes brings up how at this
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: time synth was kind of driving most of the horror
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: musical score thanks to John Carpenter Harry man Fredini with
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: the Friday thirteenth score, and how they purposely approached much
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: more of a classical band approach with this. Robert talking
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: about how a lot of influence from Bernard Harman. It's
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: psycho most noted, are most recognizable. So I love that.
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: I also have a note here just talking about I
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: love the vibrancy of the greens during the after the
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: flag scene in the woods when you know they come
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: across Judy, uh, you know, kind of coursing Paul into
- 1:03:08Speaker 3: a kiss in which Angela discovers and she's heartbroken and
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: she runs away, and I believe Ricky calls her a
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: Does he call her a bitch?
- 1:03:19Speaker 5: I think so?
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: Yeah, something says something that that that time.
- 1:03:23Speaker 5: There falls in line with her character.
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like Nacha, except in the book she's out
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: here grabbing Wiener and all kinds of stuff that doesn't
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: happen in the But one thing that I really like
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: here is something we've brought up earlier, which is we
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: we already know the dynamic, right, like we know the
- 1:03:46Speaker 3: story of Angela. We know that Ricky has seen her
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: commit the murder to Billy, which leads to Mel's confrontation
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: with Ricky next to the lake. Much more tense to me,
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: like personal and personal in the book, because you know,
- 1:04:07Speaker 3: we we know Mel is suspicious that these are not accidents,
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: and he clearly has it out for Ricky because he
- 1:04:15Speaker 3: straight up just confronts him on the on the beach.
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: While while this is going on, you have this confrontation
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: between Meg and Judy and Angela where Meg just picks
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: up Angela and throws her into the lake. In the movie,
- 1:04:38Speaker 3: you might just think she's afraid of water, right, we
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: don't know any better. She doesn't want to get thrown
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: the water. Maybe she can't swim, who knows. In the book,
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: we know why she doesn't want to get thrown in
- 1:04:48Speaker 3: the water because there's a possibility that her fellow campers
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: and counselors are gonna the secret's going to be revealed.
- 1:04:57Speaker 5: Yes, it's I feel like between the lake in the
- 1:05:02Speaker 5: shower are like the two big moments where I feel
- 1:05:07Speaker 5: like that that's really There's a lot of focus that's
- 1:05:10Speaker 5: put on those moments, and I think it helps kind
- 1:05:14Speaker 5: of makes it a little bit more understandable from her perspective,
- 1:05:19Speaker 5: like why she's so fearful of, you know, going through
- 1:05:23Speaker 5: that or being put in these tough positions.
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: Yeah, well, even you know earlier, like you like you
- 1:05:29Speaker 3: mentioned the shower, you know, even earlier, the brief moment
- 1:05:32Speaker 3: where she's talking about the anxiety of having to shower
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: at a different time than the other girls.
- 1:05:37Speaker 5: Or body hair, like any of the body hair that
- 1:05:40Speaker 5: might be shown. It's getting harder and harder to conceal.
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's great, man, It's it's incredible, and I think,
- 1:05:47Speaker 3: you know, only somebody like B. R. Flynn could bring
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: that level of attention and focus to it to really
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: make an impact, you know. I mean, it's something where
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: like you're thinking about and it brings a different level
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: of clarity to the character and kind of the anxieties
- 1:06:05Speaker 3: and the fears that the character is going in this
- 1:06:07Speaker 3: very public space. I mean, camp is not a place
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: of privacy. Nope, public showers and all kinds, you know what,
- 1:06:19Speaker 3: So this is not the place to try to hide
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: something like this. So those anxieties and those fears and
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: those worries kind of all play into the over arching
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: anxiety and fears of everything going on.
- 1:06:33Speaker 5: This.
- 1:06:36Speaker 3: I don't know what's weirder. I don't know if it's
- 1:06:41Speaker 3: already being a weirdo or if it's Mel being romantically
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: involved with Meg. Mel is significantly older, probably three times age.
- 1:06:56Speaker 5: Mel spent all summer finessing.
- 1:06:58Speaker 3: He was messing something, and he invites Meg over for dinner.
- 1:07:07Speaker 3: Meg's like, Hey, I'm gonna go get a shower. It's hot,
- 1:07:10Speaker 3: it's sneaky. I smell she's sweating from throwing Angela in
- 1:07:13Speaker 3: the water, So she's got to go get a shower,
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: and we have the death of Meg at this moment.
- 1:07:20Speaker 3: And one thing I want to bring up is my
- 1:07:22Speaker 3: love for the shot. So she Meg goes to the
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: next cabin over to shower. So the cabin is empty,
- 1:07:29Speaker 3: but she's in their showers and there's a shot when
- 1:07:34Speaker 3: the door opens and it's back lit, so you just
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: see this large shadow fill the cabin and it's just
- 1:07:41Speaker 3: somebody there standing holding a knife. Probably my favorite shot
- 1:07:45Speaker 3: of the movie.
- 1:07:46Speaker 5: Can I just say during that scene it feels very Giallow.
- 1:07:50Speaker 3: Esque, European influenced. Yeah, yeah, very much love that shot. Well,
- 1:07:58Speaker 3: one thing that we talked was the difference. This kill
- 1:08:02Speaker 3: scene is really gross. So she gets stabbed, she's mega showering.
- 1:08:07Speaker 3: She gets stabbed through the shower wall into her back,
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: and then the knife is literally dragged dragged through her
- 1:08:17Speaker 3: spine as she dies.
- 1:08:20Speaker 5: Yeah, they go all out in the novel, Oh do.
- 1:08:23Speaker 3: The book just goes way fucking crazy. She she gets
- 1:08:27Speaker 3: stabbed in the back and then when she attempts to
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: get up, she stabs her own hand into the knife,
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: which goes through the palm of her hand. She falls
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: into the shower curtain sees that it's Angela, and then
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: Angela proceeds to stab her to death. In the commentary,
- 1:08:47Speaker 3: I like how Robert Hiltzik points out that Angela is
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: very environmentally conscious because after she kills Megan the shower,
- 1:08:57Speaker 3: she turns the water off.
- 1:09:02Speaker 5: Can't waste water.
- 1:09:03Speaker 3: Yeah, you can't always water, man, you can't always water.
- 1:09:07Speaker 3: And this leads to I think probably the nastiest moment
- 1:09:11Speaker 3: in the book, which is the death of the camp
- 1:09:15Speaker 3: the poor camping kids, so so nasty man, just so.
- 1:09:21Speaker 5: Ruthless, basically like a slaughterhouse.
- 1:09:25Speaker 3: Oh yeah, these poor kids are just camping outside and
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: here comes Angela, right because.
- 1:09:32Speaker 5: Just like an animal.
- 1:09:39Speaker 3: And Jeff Hayes kind of points out that and asks
- 1:09:43Speaker 3: Robert like if he thinks this took it too far,
- 1:09:46Speaker 3: because this is kind of a in this In this era,
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: I feel like there were always that there was always
- 1:09:52Speaker 3: that one moment that really pushed it over, right, and
- 1:09:56Speaker 3: it was kind of like going for that shock. This
- 1:09:58Speaker 3: is that moment.
- 1:10:00Speaker 5: Kids always fell off limits, right, I mean you see
- 1:10:03Speaker 5: that in a lot of Slashers. I never felt like,
- 1:10:07Speaker 5: for the most part, you know, any of the films
- 1:10:09Speaker 5: that we've seen, they never really kind of go over
- 1:10:16Speaker 5: that line, and I thought that this was interesting that
- 1:10:20Speaker 5: they were, you know, it's definitely taken some big swings.
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it's taking some huge swings. It's really gross
- 1:10:30Speaker 3: and there's a limbs being chopped up, there's rolling heads.
- 1:10:35Speaker 3: It's really really a gross a gross scene, man, really
- 1:10:39Speaker 3: really nasty. But when Jeff kind of brings up that
- 1:10:42Speaker 3: this has taken it too far, Robert kind of says, well,
- 1:10:44Speaker 3: you know, this is the turning point of the movie,
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: when shit it gets real.
- 1:10:49Speaker 5: Yeah, it definitely feels like everything gets styled up by
- 1:10:52Speaker 5: this point. I mean, things start going off the rails.
- 1:10:55Speaker 5: And obviously we've got a couple uh, pretty impactful deaths
- 1:11:00Speaker 5: that we get as we start getting towards the end
- 1:11:03Speaker 5: of the movie. But I would have to say this
- 1:11:05Speaker 5: next one is pretty pretty important.
- 1:11:08Speaker 3: Well, my question to you, Steve is have you ever
- 1:11:11Speaker 3: used a curling iron before?
- 1:11:17Speaker 5: You know, I can't say that I have, But if
- 1:11:22Speaker 5: I have to do it for beyond the Blood, I'm
- 1:11:24Speaker 5: willing to take the fall.
- 1:11:26Speaker 3: Oh no, don't blame beyond the blood, man.
- 1:11:32Speaker 5: What it's from my hair? What are you talking about?
- 1:11:36Speaker 3: This is a complicated bit to talk about here, because
- 1:11:43Speaker 3: Judy is killed by getting stabbed in a very sensitive
- 1:11:51Speaker 3: place with a hot curling iron. Every time I've seen
- 1:11:57Speaker 3: this movie, I know ever thought it was Ricky. I
- 1:12:02Speaker 3: always thought it was Angela. There's a shot at the
- 1:12:03Speaker 3: door where you see the silhouette and Jeff Hayes points
- 1:12:09Speaker 3: out that literally while watching the commentary, he's watching this
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: new restoration at the time, the blu ray, and he says, Oh,
- 1:12:17Speaker 3: I never noticed that that was Ricky standing there. As
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: he said that, I was even questioning, I was like, wait,
- 1:12:23Speaker 3: is that Ricky standing there? Because with the hair and so,
- 1:12:26Speaker 3: they look so similar in facial structure. So in the
- 1:12:33Speaker 3: book it's much more. In the movie she says, Oh
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: it's you, or what are you doing here? Judy says.
- 1:12:40Speaker 3: In the book she actually says like Ricky, you know,
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: like says him by name, and uh yeah. So he
- 1:12:49Speaker 3: he kills Judy with the curling iron in the very
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: sensitive area that I won't say. And the book's description
- 1:12:59Speaker 3: of the smell of hair as kind of like the
- 1:13:01Speaker 3: cherry on top of it all. It's very very gross.
- 1:13:06Speaker 3: It's also in this chapter or the following chapter where
- 1:13:09Speaker 3: we learned that Ricky is the one who killed Artie
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: because of what happened in a walkin.
- 1:13:16Speaker 5: Now, did you ever feel like that that was ever
- 1:13:19Speaker 5: implied in the movie for either.
- 1:13:23Speaker 3: No, because the movie just shows the hands and it
- 1:13:26Speaker 3: never you know, it's not like anything was done that
- 1:13:30Speaker 3: Angela couldn't do. Right, you kind of like question that,
- 1:13:33Speaker 3: and he's not really the Robert and Jeff talk about
- 1:13:37Speaker 3: the kind of Jeff kind of brings up the idea
- 1:13:39Speaker 3: of like, was there purposely read herrings and Robert was
- 1:13:43Speaker 3: kind of like, not really. He's like, I kind of
- 1:13:45Speaker 3: didn't really want people at this point to even suspect anybody,
- 1:13:49Speaker 3: but you know, like anybody else besides who we were
- 1:13:52Speaker 3: trying to, which was clearly Angela.
- 1:13:55Speaker 5: I think that that like that part of the novel,
- 1:13:58Speaker 5: I mean, it's obviously a little bit more laid out
- 1:14:01Speaker 5: with that Ricky has some level of involvement with what's
- 1:14:04Speaker 5: going on at the camp. But you even go back
- 1:14:08Speaker 5: to when they were talking about, you know, their grandpa
- 1:14:11Speaker 5: Peter and how you know the history of our mental
- 1:14:16Speaker 5: illness runs in the family, you know, and then he's
- 1:14:20Speaker 5: even questioning that at one point when he's on the
- 1:14:22Speaker 5: phone with Aunt Martha, right he's questioning whether or not
- 1:14:26Speaker 5: that you know, they might be susceptible to this. And
- 1:14:32Speaker 5: I mean, I think Ricky being involved in this entire situation,
- 1:14:39Speaker 5: I thought that that was like pretty revealing.
- 1:14:42Speaker 3: Yeah, well you have now kind of all these pieces
- 1:14:45Speaker 3: coming together. Like he he killed Artie as getting back
- 1:14:50Speaker 3: at him for the almost assault on Angela in the
- 1:14:55Speaker 3: walk in, and then Ben sees Ricky in the kitchen,
- 1:15:01Speaker 3: so he's gotta he's got to tie off that loose end,
- 1:15:05Speaker 3: so he kills Ben, poor Ben. And then at this point,
- 1:15:10Speaker 3: you know, Judy is, as we've said, like pretty much
- 1:15:14Speaker 3: like a bitch. And you know, after seeing in the
- 1:15:17Speaker 3: Woods with Paul, you know, I think he's just tired
- 1:15:20Speaker 3: of it. He Ricky had a fling with her the
- 1:15:23Speaker 3: summer before. She's now interested in in older men, more mature,
- 1:15:28Speaker 3: so she kind of keeps pushing him off and pushing
- 1:15:32Speaker 3: him off. And then she's with his best friend in
- 1:15:38Speaker 3: the in the in the cabin grabbing Wieners. I'm not
- 1:15:42Speaker 3: gabbing him. Sorry. In the woods during she'd have been
- 1:15:44Speaker 3: captured the flag instead, she was capturing the flag staff.
- 1:15:51Speaker 3: That was not pre written.
- 1:15:52Speaker 5: I actually no, let me ask you though, do you
- 1:15:56Speaker 5: think that the like the the multiple passes that he
- 1:16:01Speaker 5: tries to make it Judy that starts way back, even
- 1:16:04Speaker 5: when they first get to camp. Do you think it's
- 1:16:07Speaker 5: a rejection that ultimately pushes him in this direction, or
- 1:16:11Speaker 5: do you think it's more being protective of Angela the
- 1:16:16Speaker 5: way that he's shown that in the novel and then
- 1:16:19Speaker 5: obviously we see that in the movie as well.
- 1:16:22Speaker 3: I think it's total experience. I mean, when you if
- 1:16:24Speaker 3: you're gonna look at it from the sense that he
- 1:16:28Speaker 3: is protecting her, you know, protection is from past current
- 1:16:33Speaker 3: in all future threats, and I'm pretty sure he sees
- 1:16:37Speaker 3: there's a little bit of maybe personal motivation for sure,
- 1:16:41Speaker 3: and in going after Judy, but there's also kind of
- 1:16:44Speaker 3: the you know, what, what does Judy have the ability
- 1:16:47Speaker 3: to do? And what is she going to do if
- 1:16:48Speaker 3: he's already being like this, you know, she's already making
- 1:16:52Speaker 3: Ricky miserable and making Angela miserable, and I think, you know,
- 1:16:56Speaker 3: just kind of like enough's enough to Ricky. Maybe there's
- 1:16:58Speaker 3: a little bit of a snap in there, you know,
- 1:17:00Speaker 3: where he's like, all right, fine, I'll go I'm gonna
- 1:17:02Speaker 3: go take care of this. Yeah, it's interesting. You know,
- 1:17:07Speaker 3: it's very very interesting. And then you also have in
- 1:17:10Speaker 3: this moment too, Angela killing.
- 1:17:18Speaker 5: Mike.
- 1:17:19Speaker 3: So all this is going on at the same time
- 1:17:21Speaker 3: Ricky is sneaking into Judy's cabin. Angela is killing Mike.
- 1:17:26Speaker 3: She rips off his flag staff. It's very very very graphic, uh,
- 1:17:33Speaker 3: in the in the woods on the trail, and then
- 1:17:37Speaker 3: she goes to Judy's cabin to kill her. So Angela
- 1:17:42Speaker 3: was already gonna go take her out, and Judy's already dead.
- 1:17:46Speaker 3: So shit, you know, like.
- 1:17:52Speaker 5: Fucking Judy man, she would have been getting one way
- 1:17:54Speaker 5: or another.
- 1:17:55Speaker 3: Yeah, she Well, this is the part of the book
- 1:17:59Speaker 3: that I really want to get you know, your your
- 1:18:02Speaker 3: opinion on because we have mel who finds Meg's body.
- 1:18:09Speaker 3: He's all jazzed up in the movie. He's got that
- 1:18:11Speaker 3: nice green uh you know suit track suit thing go
- 1:18:15Speaker 3: or he's got like the green track jacket on.
- 1:18:17Speaker 5: He's smacking man guys.
- 1:18:19Speaker 3: Looking good. He finds Meg's body and this is just
- 1:18:23Speaker 3: too much for him. Now it's personal. You can kill
- 1:18:25Speaker 3: all the kids, you won you take out my very
- 1:18:30Speaker 3: young girlfriend. Done done. So he's pissed. So he goes
- 1:18:36Speaker 3: looking for Ricky. He finds Ricky in the woods and
- 1:18:40Speaker 3: attacks him, beats the ship out of him, and uh
- 1:18:43Speaker 3: in the movie, Ricky's just left unconscious in the woods.
- 1:18:49Speaker 3: In the book, uh, Mel crushes his trachea and he
- 1:18:56Speaker 3: Ricky essentially just suffocates and dies in the woods.
- 1:19:02Speaker 5: Full of hate, dude.
- 1:19:04Speaker 3: So it's so gross, man, just it's so so violent
- 1:19:09Speaker 3: and vicious. The way that he does this.
- 1:19:13Speaker 5: That's like militious, but that's not even just that's not
- 1:19:18Speaker 5: killing somebody. That's like an an agonizing way to go.
- 1:19:23Speaker 3: It's terrible. It's a very personal, like said yes, yep,
- 1:19:27Speaker 3: very personal assault, which is so funny because like Mel
- 1:19:30Speaker 3: is clearly just losing his mind and going overboard and
- 1:19:34Speaker 3: all this because like he's so worried about losing his camp.
- 1:19:36Speaker 3: He's like, I'm gonna lose my camp. He's like, I'm
- 1:19:37Speaker 3: might as well kill a kid. You know, I'm already
- 1:19:40Speaker 3: this far down the hole. I'm not dispatch this this
- 1:19:45Speaker 3: child that's a that I'm that I'm watching.
- 1:19:49Speaker 5: Now, would you say that you know, obviously we know
- 1:19:53Speaker 5: that Ricky in the movie, his face kind of left
- 1:19:58Speaker 5: a little bit more open ended to what happens past
- 1:20:02Speaker 5: that point. But in this. Did you feel like that
- 1:20:05Speaker 5: you like this outcome more compared to the film. I mean,
- 1:20:10Speaker 5: it's it's pretty bleak.
- 1:20:13Speaker 3: It's bleak. It's I do. I do honestly because I
- 1:20:23Speaker 3: like I prefer the the rougher ending. I prefer like
- 1:20:29Speaker 3: when there isn't a happy ending, because I think it's
- 1:20:32Speaker 3: it's more real, it's more impactful that way. And I
- 1:20:36Speaker 3: was very shocked when Ricky was killed. Yea. I did
- 1:20:41Speaker 3: not expect it to go to that point.
- 1:20:44Speaker 5: Nor did I expect him as one of the killers.
- 1:20:47Speaker 5: So in a way, it almost feels like it makes
- 1:20:50Speaker 5: a little bit more sense with his outcome. I think
- 1:20:54Speaker 5: if we had gotten that in the movie, it would
- 1:20:55Speaker 5: have been I don't know, I don't think it would
- 1:20:58Speaker 5: have really made a whole lot of sense.
- 1:21:00Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, well it really leads to, you know, really
- 1:21:06Speaker 3: a new sense of personal vengeance on Mel for his
- 1:21:10Speaker 3: death scene, because Angela finds Ricky's body and goes after
- 1:21:16Speaker 3: Mel and finds him on the target practice. But I
- 1:21:22Speaker 3: don't know, I'm the range, the archery range, and I
- 1:21:26Speaker 3: will give credit to the movie. The I'm gonna point
- 1:21:31Speaker 3: the Jeff Hayes book, who breaks this down into immense
- 1:21:34Speaker 3: detail on how this effect was captured, because the effect
- 1:21:36Speaker 3: in the movie of the arrow going through Mel's neck
- 1:21:40Speaker 3: in camera is stunning. It's an incredible practical effect, up
- 1:21:46Speaker 3: there with one of the best of this time period.
- 1:21:49Speaker 3: In the book, this death scene plays out very slow,
- 1:21:54Speaker 3: very agonizing, over the course of nearly three pages. This
- 1:21:59Speaker 3: managed being shot with arrows, and it's really like you think,
- 1:22:06Speaker 3: you think, like, okay, this is going on long enough,
- 1:22:08Speaker 3: and then it keeps going. So the movie really shows
- 1:22:12Speaker 3: him a lot of a lot of mercy.
- 1:22:15Speaker 5: I was gonna say this one, at least for Angela,
- 1:22:18Speaker 5: feels like this one feels like the most personal obviously
- 1:22:23Speaker 5: given the context, or like her motive for going after Mill.
- 1:22:30Speaker 5: But yeah, I I was really surprised when it was
- 1:22:34Speaker 5: drawn out for like basically three pages of this guy
- 1:22:37Speaker 5: get just going through it.
- 1:22:38Speaker 3: It just kept going, just kept going to kind of
- 1:22:44Speaker 3: get towards the end of this. This this this whole
- 1:22:48Speaker 3: ending is so much. It's so much that we kind
- 1:22:51Speaker 3: of just got to get into it. You have the
- 1:22:55Speaker 3: beach scene between Angela and Paul, which plays out quite
- 1:23:02Speaker 3: different in the movie. She says, you know, let's go
- 1:23:04Speaker 3: swimming and begins to kind of get undressed, but we
- 1:23:08Speaker 3: never see anything from there until the finding her on
- 1:23:11Speaker 3: the beach with him in here, she actually reveals her
- 1:23:16Speaker 3: secret to him, and his reaction is very shocking. He's
- 1:23:23Speaker 3: very taken aback and very shocked. And I thought this
- 1:23:27Speaker 3: was an interesting kind of extension on the beach because
- 1:23:34Speaker 3: we already know we know the secret, so the book
- 1:23:37Speaker 3: can't hide that, like she's gonna jump into water. It's like, well,
- 1:23:41Speaker 3: he's gonna see. We know he's gonna say. So for
- 1:23:43Speaker 3: her to just outright reveal it to him and him
- 1:23:46Speaker 3: the react that way, it adds more of an understanding
- 1:23:52Speaker 3: to why she kills him, because we don't really know
- 1:23:57Speaker 3: at that time in the movie. We just know she
- 1:24:00Speaker 3: taking on swimming and then he's dead.
- 1:24:02Speaker 5: Yeah, there's there's nothing that bridges those two scenes together
- 1:24:08Speaker 5: for us to have a better understanding of, like why
- 1:24:11Speaker 5: she would go to the links that she does with
- 1:24:15Speaker 5: killing Paul.
- 1:24:16Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, So this this does a much more a
- 1:24:21Speaker 3: much better job at kind of explaining and making it
- 1:24:23Speaker 3: all makes sense clearly. And this is what's this is
- 1:24:26Speaker 3: what's nice is that everything added into the novelization isn't
- 1:24:30Speaker 3: just added for the sake of adding it. It all
- 1:24:32Speaker 3: ties everything together and it makes everything make more sense.
- 1:24:39Speaker 3: When Susie and Ronnie show up on the beach. Mind you,
- 1:24:43Speaker 3: before this, they found Mike's body and Ronnie actually like
- 1:24:46Speaker 3: picks up or Ronnie actually picks up Mike's dick that's
- 1:24:51Speaker 3: been chopped off, just saying I had to add in there.
- 1:24:59Speaker 3: They find her on the beach with the head of Paul. Right,
- 1:25:04Speaker 3: Paul's body is there. Angela's on the beach and she's
- 1:25:10Speaker 3: all out, she's all revealed now. And here comes Aunt
- 1:25:14Speaker 3: Martha just randomly shows up and Angela. She goes walking
- 1:25:23Speaker 3: down the beach. Angela runs over and gives her a
- 1:25:25Speaker 3: hug and kind of grabs onto her, and then Angela
- 1:25:31Speaker 3: starts getting angry and, like I think the book says,
- 1:25:34Speaker 3: convulsing against Aunt Martha, and then begins to blame her
- 1:25:42Speaker 3: Aunt for quote unquote making her be someone she's not,
- 1:25:49Speaker 3: kind of forcing her to take on the persona of
- 1:25:53Speaker 3: dead sister. Clearly this is Peter speaking take on the
- 1:25:59Speaker 3: persona of his dead sister. He says, again much preferred
- 1:26:05Speaker 3: the name Penelope. What a nice name. That's you know,
- 1:26:10Speaker 3: just really blaming the ant for not letting her be
- 1:26:14Speaker 3: her own person. Yeah, and because of all of this
- 1:26:20Speaker 3: and this out of control spiral that's been happening this
- 1:26:22Speaker 3: whole movie, Angela proceeds to bite Aunt Martha on the
- 1:26:28Speaker 3: throat and kind of savagely truth through her, like what
- 1:26:34Speaker 3: was it crowded artery? It's very very nasty.
- 1:26:41Speaker 5: I will say as much as like I can appreciate
- 1:26:46Speaker 5: that they put this in the novel, I don't know
- 1:26:50Speaker 5: if I could see this playing out in the movie,
- 1:26:53Speaker 5: because I think it would have almost like the iconic
- 1:26:58Speaker 5: moment where there's a feel and then it just basically
- 1:27:02Speaker 5: after that point cuts the credits. It would have been
- 1:27:06Speaker 5: like almost raising the bar even more. On top of that,
- 1:27:09Speaker 5: if they had had Aunt Martha shown up at the
- 1:27:12Speaker 5: very like the very end of the movie, I don't know.
- 1:27:15Speaker 5: I like it for the sake of the novel. I
- 1:27:17Speaker 5: don't know. It would have felt kind of maybe a
- 1:27:20Speaker 5: little out of place for the movie.
- 1:27:23Speaker 3: I think it would have worked if when Ronnie says,
- 1:27:28Speaker 3: oh my god, she's a boy, and then all you
- 1:27:32Speaker 3: hear off rame is that's my daughter, and the camera
- 1:27:37Speaker 3: went pans over to my Aunt Martha coming down the beach.
- 1:27:42Speaker 5: She just had to restart real quick. Yeah, there we go.
- 1:27:45Speaker 3: Yeah, and this is where officially the book kind of
- 1:27:49Speaker 3: comes to an end before the epilogue, and well, she's
- 1:27:54Speaker 3: dragged off of her by the way. It takes five people,
- 1:27:57Speaker 3: including a cop who has the worst mustache appliance I've
- 1:28:01Speaker 3: ever seen in my life. In the movie, she gets
- 1:28:04Speaker 3: pulled off, and there is a little page and a
- 1:28:07Speaker 3: half epilogue that follows that just mentions that it's been
- 1:28:11Speaker 3: a couple of years she was locked up. She was
- 1:28:14Speaker 3: kind of given some more privileges due to her progress
- 1:28:19Speaker 3: and her I guess attitude and such, and because of this,
- 1:28:25Speaker 3: she had been granted a little bit of a trip
- 1:28:28Speaker 3: with an orderly named Claude, and she proceeds to He
- 1:28:35Speaker 3: drives her to Camp Arowhak. She stabs them in the
- 1:28:38Speaker 3: temple with an arrow. When he's dead on the ground,
- 1:28:42Speaker 3: she says, excuse me, very very kind, and then she
- 1:28:46Speaker 3: talks about how many camps there are in the area,
- 1:28:50Speaker 3: leading into Sleepwoy Camp too.
- 1:28:55Speaker 5: I think now we just need the novelization for that.
- 1:28:59Speaker 3: Let's make it happen, man, Let's get a whole trilogy
- 1:29:02Speaker 3: and then return to sleep Boy Camp.
- 1:29:05Speaker 5: Right, It's it, right, that's it.
- 1:29:09Speaker 3: Give me your So what's interesting about this episode is
- 1:29:13Speaker 3: clearly we wanted to discuss this book greater. Now that
- 1:29:17Speaker 3: we're at the end of this episode, I will say,
- 1:29:21Speaker 3: and I've mentioned it earlier, that this commentary track, both
- 1:29:27Speaker 3: of these commentary tracks are not great. Robert Hiltzik does
- 1:29:30Speaker 3: not give a lot of insight. You're gonna get more
- 1:29:32Speaker 3: insight out of, unfortunately, the Jeff Hayes book Reigniting the Campfire,
- 1:29:37Speaker 3: which if you want to learn about sleep Boy Camp,
- 1:29:39Speaker 3: I'm going to point you in that direction all day,
- 1:29:41Speaker 3: twenty four hours of the day, seven days a week,
- 1:29:43Speaker 3: throughout six five days a year. So we really had
- 1:29:46Speaker 3: to really had to lean on the book and really
- 1:29:50Speaker 3: pull a lot from the book for this episode, which
- 1:29:54Speaker 3: I love. Give me your final thoughts on on B. R.
- 1:29:59Speaker 3: Flynn's Sleepway Camp novelization.
- 1:30:01Speaker 5: Sum it up for me, I thought that on the surface,
- 1:30:08Speaker 5: I loved what this novel brought to the table. Expanded obviously,
- 1:30:18Speaker 5: you know, I think both of us love the eighties
- 1:30:20Speaker 5: slasher but getting to be a little bit more entrenched
- 1:30:26Speaker 5: in camp airwhack. I just love what this book brought
- 1:30:31Speaker 5: to the table, like on that front, but more importantly
- 1:30:36Speaker 5: getting a glimpse into understanding someone that's going through essentially
- 1:30:42Speaker 5: like gender identity. You know, the confusion, the internal struggle
- 1:30:47Speaker 5: that's presented in this book. I thought was outstanding. And
- 1:30:51Speaker 5: if you're a fan of sleep Away Camp, I think
- 1:30:54Speaker 5: that this is like the definitive way to really experience
- 1:30:58Speaker 5: the story and everything that has to offer. What about you, man, Yeah,
- 1:31:03Speaker 5: same dude.
- 1:31:03Speaker 3: I you know, I always talk about how I love
- 1:31:07Speaker 3: companions like I love when something accents something so it
- 1:31:11Speaker 3: makes it better. If you're a fan of sleep Away Camp,
- 1:31:16Speaker 3: I think you need to read the novelization because it
- 1:31:23Speaker 3: it's And no point did I wish anything from the book,
- 1:31:30Speaker 3: whether or not it's coming from B. R. Flynn or
- 1:31:33Speaker 3: whatever draft this was adapted from of the script. I
- 1:31:40Speaker 3: don't really wish that anything from the book was in
- 1:31:43Speaker 3: the movie because it would kind of ruin the shock
- 1:31:48Speaker 3: of the movie, which is the big iconic scene. It
- 1:31:51Speaker 3: would ruin it because you would know that's that's in
- 1:31:54Speaker 3: the book. Is not afraid to be open about that
- 1:31:57Speaker 3: stuff right away, because odds are you're reading it, you
- 1:32:00Speaker 3: already know the movie, so you already know the big reveal.
- 1:32:03Speaker 3: So there's no sense in trying to hide it. It's
- 1:32:05Speaker 3: not nobody is going to pick up the Sleepway Camp
- 1:32:09Speaker 3: novelization at never seeing or knowing the movie, or at
- 1:32:13Speaker 3: least very few people will. So I think it was smart.
- 1:32:18Speaker 3: I think B. R. Flynn's writing is incredible just from
- 1:32:25Speaker 3: the The kill scenes are incredibly graphic, very much bordering
- 1:32:33Speaker 3: near on like the extreme horror spectrum of writing. These
- 1:32:39Speaker 3: kill scenes deliver everything that you want in the book,
- 1:32:41Speaker 3: but also like these insights that really I think can
- 1:32:46Speaker 3: only authentically come from a trans writer speaking on these
- 1:32:51Speaker 3: just gender identity crisis that our character is facing. Anybody else.
- 1:32:57Speaker 3: I just I don't want to say it wouldn't be
- 1:33:00Speaker 3: because I don't want to. I don't want to, you know,
- 1:33:02Speaker 3: assume that other writers couldn't do this very well. But
- 1:33:06Speaker 3: dealing with such sensitive personal information here, I think it
- 1:33:12Speaker 3: needed to come from the heart, and getting somebody like B. R.
- 1:33:16Speaker 3: Flinn to do this was absolutely the best choice possible.
- 1:33:22Speaker 5: I think it's perfect pairing given the subject matter, and
- 1:33:25Speaker 5: I think if there was any other writer that was
- 1:33:29Speaker 5: maybe not one hundred percent, but I do think that
- 1:33:32Speaker 5: it would be tough to tackle this subject matter, and
- 1:33:34Speaker 5: there might might have been a little bit of a disconnect.
- 1:33:37Speaker 3: Yeah. Absolutely so. I love this book. I think it's
- 1:33:43Speaker 3: if you're a fan of Sleepy Camp, if you're a
- 1:33:45Speaker 3: fan of Slashers, I think you need to pick this up.
- 1:33:47Speaker 3: I think this book makes the movie better.
- 1:33:50Speaker 5: Oh yeah, hundred percent. Yep.
- 1:33:53Speaker 3: And you know, I can't thank in Psycho Apocalypse enough
- 1:33:56Speaker 3: for giving us this opportunity for you know, working with
- 1:34:01Speaker 3: us on this as well. This is something I want
- 1:34:05Speaker 3: to do a lot more of in the future of
- 1:34:07Speaker 3: the show, is cover things like this because nobody else
- 1:34:11Speaker 3: is Nobody's having these these grand discussions. There is not
- 1:34:15Speaker 3: gonna find You're not going to find a more comprehensive
- 1:34:18Speaker 3: discussion of this book on on anywhere you're gonna find
- 1:34:22Speaker 3: your podcasts.
- 1:34:24Speaker 5: No, I think that this was I'm thankful that we
- 1:34:28Speaker 5: started with this novel, this film to tackle and I'm
- 1:34:32Speaker 5: excited to see what other opportunities we can, you know,
- 1:34:37Speaker 5: like what's going to come in the near future as
- 1:34:39Speaker 5: far as like other books we can we can dive into.
- 1:34:42Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, man. There's gonna be some links in
- 1:34:46Speaker 3: the bio to where you can get the book. I'm
- 1:34:48Speaker 3: gonna have the Amazon link down there. I'm going to
- 1:34:49Speaker 3: have the direct and Psycho Apocalypse link. Again, these are
- 1:34:53Speaker 3: not affiliate links. We do not get anything from you
- 1:34:56Speaker 3: purchasing from them. We just ask that you please support
- 1:34:59Speaker 3: this company, Please support the initiative, talk about it on
- 1:35:03Speaker 3: social media, post about it, talk about it. Let us
- 1:35:06Speaker 3: know what you think of If you pick up the
- 1:35:08Speaker 3: book and you read it, shoot one of us a message,
- 1:35:10Speaker 3: or shoot the podcast Instagram a message. Let us know
- 1:35:14Speaker 3: your thoughts on the book. This was an incredible opportunity
- 1:35:18Speaker 3: for us that that that I think we took very
- 1:35:21Speaker 3: much to We got to do this to the best
- 1:35:23Speaker 3: possible level that we can. So, you know, it's crazy
- 1:35:30Speaker 3: that we're that we're rounding out the first year of
- 1:35:33Speaker 3: this show, that we're getting to that point. We only
- 1:35:35Speaker 3: have two episodes left for the year. We we have this.
- 1:35:40Speaker 3: If you're listening to this, there's give listens. We have
- 1:35:44Speaker 3: the Sleepoy Camp cast reunion, which is with Thomas Van Dell,
- 1:35:48Speaker 3: Karen Fields and Catherine Cammy. That that's going to be
- 1:35:51Speaker 3: out a couple of days. If you're listening to this now,
- 1:35:53Speaker 3: it's going to be available for everybody. You know, we
- 1:35:56Speaker 3: hope that you enjoy that. That was so much fun
- 1:35:58Speaker 3: for us. It's chaotic.
- 1:36:00Speaker 5: Oh, it was a blast. It was, yes, absolutely chaotic,
- 1:36:03Speaker 5: but organized chaos.
- 1:36:05Speaker 3: Right, so much fun, yeah, so much fun. We're already
- 1:36:10Speaker 3: at work for our Thanksgiving special, which we're going to
- 1:36:13Speaker 3: be discussing the commentary track for Eli Roth's Thanksgiving, so
- 1:36:17Speaker 3: that'll be available. Dude, I love that movie. I'm so
- 1:36:20Speaker 3: happy there's a.
- 1:36:22Speaker 5: Yes same here.
- 1:36:23Speaker 3: Uh so we're gonna be talking about that commentary track
- 1:36:25Speaker 3: on Thanksgiving. Make sure that you play it on the
- 1:36:28Speaker 3: communal you know, speaker, Let the aunt listen to it,
- 1:36:32Speaker 3: the mom, the grandmom, grandpa, you know, flood us all
- 1:36:36Speaker 3: over your household. We can't wait to see you know
- 1:36:39Speaker 3: what you guys think of that? And then ending the
- 1:36:42Speaker 3: year with misery, Rob Reiner's Misery based on the Stephen
- 1:36:46Speaker 3: King novel and that I think we're going to have
- 1:36:49Speaker 3: Josh from Beyond the Grave media on with us for
- 1:36:52Speaker 3: that episode to end the end the first year. It
- 1:36:57Speaker 3: feels surreal.
- 1:36:58Speaker 5: But where is the are gone?
- 1:37:00Speaker 3: I have no idea, dude, I have no idea. It's crazy.
- 1:37:06Speaker 3: It's like, I don't know, genuinely, I'm flabberg acid at.
- 1:37:11Speaker 5: The thought of We have a lot of exciting things
- 1:37:13Speaker 5: in the works, that's for sure.
- 1:37:15Speaker 3: Oh so much. Man. I'm very very very excited as always.
- 1:37:21Speaker 3: You know, we greatly appreciate you guys. Thank you for
- 1:37:24Speaker 3: all the support and love in this first year of
- 1:37:26Speaker 3: the show. It's it's been overwhelming, and you know, I
- 1:37:32Speaker 3: really want to just I want people to know that
- 1:37:36Speaker 3: both here and on Instagram, you know, we we this
- 1:37:42Speaker 3: is the stuff that we live for and that we love. Yeah,
- 1:37:45Speaker 3: and this is a community that we love. And you know,
- 1:37:48Speaker 3: we're always here to talk about movies or answer any

- 1:38:12Speaker 5: what about you, Chris.
- 1:38:14Speaker 3: So, i am bearded film guy over on Instagram. Just
- 1:38:18Speaker 3: one quick reminder, please go into link below pick up
- 1:38:21Speaker 3: a copy of the Sleepway Camp novelization. If you can
- 1:38:24Speaker 3: support in Psycho Apocalypse, visit the website pick up some
- 1:38:27Speaker 3: other novelizations from them. Yeah, my favorite of theirs has
- 1:38:31Speaker 3: been re Animator. That's incredible.
- 1:38:34Speaker 5: I still got to read that.
- 1:38:35Speaker 3: Yeah. Re Animators awesome. They did a fantastic Fright Night novelization,
- 1:38:40Speaker 3: as well as a kind of sequel book to Fright Night,
- 1:38:43Speaker 3: a continuation of it, which is very good. There's so
- 1:38:46Speaker 3: much great stuff over on a site. They recently released
- 1:38:49Speaker 3: the screenplay for Return to Living Dead three, So a
- 1:38:53Speaker 3: lot of great stuff going on over in Psychopocalypse. Please
- 1:38:56Speaker 3: go to support them and Steve, why don't you hit
- 1:38:58Speaker 3: them with the outro?
- 1:39:01Speaker 5: Oh? Yeah? And with that we leave Camp Arowhak behind.
- 1:39:04Speaker 5: But the real horror doesn't stay at the lake. It
- 1:39:07Speaker 5: settles in the mind. Sleep Away Camp isn't just a slasher.
- 1:39:10Speaker 5: It's a story about fractured identities, bury trauma, and the
- 1:39:14Speaker 5: silence that festers when no one listens. The deeper we went,
- 1:39:18Speaker 5: the clearer it became. The most unsettling thing here isn't
- 1:39:21Speaker 5: the violence. It's the way pain twists itself into something unrecognizable. B. R.
- 1:39:27Speaker 5: Flynn's novelization only intensifies that psychological spiral, letting us sit
- 1:39:32Speaker 5: inside the confusion, the isolation, and the emotional wounds. The
- 1:39:36Speaker 5: film only lets us glimpse, It forces us to feel
- 1:39:39Speaker 5: the weight of every secret, every memory, every moment that
- 1:39:43Speaker 5: shaped what the story becomes. Thank you for descending into
- 1:39:47Speaker 5: that mental darkness with us. As you step away from Arowhack,
- 1:39:50Speaker 5: Remember some stories don't haunt the woods. They haunt the mind.
- 1:39:55Speaker 5: Long after the summer ends. Return. We'll return soon with
- 1:40:00Speaker 5: more nightmares that echo inward. This has been beyond the blood.
- 1:40:04Speaker 3: We'll see you guys next time.
- 1:40:05Speaker 5: See you on the next one. Guys.
