- 0:00Speaker 1: Back here with Gino Rima on the women's basketball coaches shown. Later,
- 0:03Speaker 1: we'll visit with Rebecca Lobo. We'll talk about last night's
- 0:06Speaker 1: game a bit and also get into her thoughts on
- 0:09Speaker 1: the national picture. All right, you mentioned substitution patterns by
- 0:12Speaker 1: Tennessee in this one. ESPN showed a graphic mid early
- 0:18Speaker 1: fourth quarter. Somewhere in there they had seventy five substitutions
- 0:22Speaker 1: to that point, as opposed to fifteen for the Huskies.
- 0:25Speaker 1: And I mean, I remember Doug doing this at the Paul,
- 0:28Speaker 1: particularly in the first half of a game. I think
- 0:30Speaker 1: it was Stewie's senior year at the old place back
- 0:34Speaker 1: on campus. But I've never seen anything like what Tennessee does,
- 0:38Speaker 1: and Kim Caldwell's made it work. It's fun to watch
- 0:40Speaker 1: from from a fans standpoint, but man, I imagine it's
- 0:43Speaker 1: it's got to be tough on the coaches to figure
- 0:45Speaker 1: out and the players what the matchups are like. And
- 0:48Speaker 1: I know you harped about that in practice leading up
- 0:51Speaker 1: to this game.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Certainly the matchups are tough, you know, And again that's
- 0:56Speaker 2: why you know you have to be you have to
- 0:59Speaker 2: be aged, you know, and you have to know how
- 1:02Speaker 2: this gatty import reads. You know, you got to know
- 1:04Speaker 2: who we're guarding. You know, now all of a sudden,
- 1:06Speaker 2: it's a new kid coming in. But at the same time,
- 1:09Speaker 2: you know, it's not that complicated because everybody that comes
- 1:12Speaker 2: in does the exact same thing, you know, So there's
- 1:16Speaker 2: going to be you know, if you'd have told me
- 1:18Speaker 2: we you know, we were going to force more turnovers
- 1:21Speaker 2: than they forced on us, I would tell you you're crazy.
- 1:25Speaker 2: But we did no, And so the substitution pattern CAUs
- 1:32Speaker 2: there's a lot of herky jerky and you've got to
- 1:35Speaker 2: be able to manage that, you know, And for about
- 1:38Speaker 2: thirty five thirty seven minutes we did, and for a
- 1:40Speaker 2: couple of minutes we didn't.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean the points off turnovers is amazing. Twenty
- 1:44Speaker 1: four to nineteen twenty six fast break points, which is
- 1:47Speaker 1: a season high for your team. Let's shift gears. Now,
- 1:50Speaker 1: we haven't talked about Page's performance. She did have eight
- 1:53Speaker 1: assists in the game, and she was a big factor
- 1:55Speaker 1: in helping break the press and get in some easy hoops.
- 1:58Speaker 1: But you know, look, when you play a big name opponent,
- 2:01Speaker 1: she's the number one player on the list to defend,
- 2:04Speaker 1: and the Tennessee in a lot of ways made it
- 2:07Speaker 1: out for her, But it sounds like from your postgame presser,
- 2:10Speaker 1: at times it seems like maybe she was her own
- 2:12Speaker 1: worst enemy at times.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Last night, Well, I mean that usually happens. You know,
- 2:17Speaker 2: it takes two to create, you know, that kind of scenario.
- 2:22Speaker 2: And I would say that Page's Page's performance was you know,
- 2:28Speaker 2: when you think about it's a two point game, and
- 2:30Speaker 2: I thought she had a horrible game. I don't care
- 2:32Speaker 2: about how many assists she had. There was a lack
- 2:34Speaker 2: of aggressiveness in her part in hunting down shots and
- 2:38Speaker 2: taking you know, taking the shots that were available, you know,
- 2:41Speaker 2: passing up a three to take a twelve footter that
- 2:44Speaker 2: she missed, you know, things that she doesn't. You know,
- 2:47Speaker 2: you would think, why, you know a while all of
- 2:49Speaker 2: a sudden, would you do that, you know, not getting
- 2:51Speaker 2: to the free throw line enough, or I think a
- 2:55Speaker 2: game of that magnitude you know you need and that
- 2:58Speaker 2: goes crazy too. I mean, you need your best players
- 3:01Speaker 2: to really be aggressive and hungry and hunting down opportunities
- 3:06Speaker 2: instead of just taking what comes. And yeah, you know
- 3:11Speaker 2: it's hard to win at that level, you know, unless
- 3:15Speaker 2: you have contributions from your best players.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Is that hard to do, Geno? To change that moment,
- 3:21Speaker 1: that the mentality that you have. I mean, it seems
- 3:23Speaker 1: like you've always harped on it page at least in
- 3:26Speaker 1: some games, tries to go hunting for shots early. But
- 3:29Speaker 1: then it seems like things change a little bit against
- 3:33Speaker 1: the tougher opponents. Where is it should be tougher to
- 3:36Speaker 1: be able to create?
- 3:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's going to be harder, and it's
- 3:40Speaker 2: got to be you know, it's got to be a
- 3:43Speaker 2: point of emphasis that you have to know this. You
- 3:45Speaker 2: know we're coming after you and and you've got to
- 3:49Speaker 2: be able to handle it. As you said, you know,
- 3:52Speaker 2: there's just too many times when when it's not and
- 3:55Speaker 2: there's no sugarcoating it, there's no getting around it. You know,
- 3:58Speaker 2: they're going to be really physical with you and you
- 4:01Speaker 2: have to use that against them. And there's no other
- 4:05Speaker 2: way to get around that either. You know, the physicality
- 4:08Speaker 2: of the game is going to be what it is,
- 4:10Speaker 2: and you know, we've got to figure out a way
- 4:13Speaker 2: to get past that rather than letting it affect how
- 4:19Speaker 2: we approach it, how we play the game.
- 4:22Speaker 1: You know.
- 4:22Speaker 2: So, yeah, how do you change that. How do you
- 4:27Speaker 2: figure that one out? I don't know, you know, I'm
- 4:30Speaker 2: used to my best players hunting down shots and big
- 4:33Speaker 2: games and wanting to touch the ball every possession and
- 4:36Speaker 2: wanting to attack every possession. So it's it's just hard
- 4:40Speaker 2: right now to figure this one out.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Defensively, briefly, second half of the Butler game, you played
- 4:46Speaker 1: a lot of two three zone, and I think and
- 4:49Speaker 1: you haven't played much of it this year. I think
- 4:51Speaker 1: maybe a little bit last night. Not much, though. Is
- 4:55Speaker 1: that just something you're trying to tinker with as you
- 4:57Speaker 1: get later in the season, just trying some different things defensively?
- 5:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it works better when we have a
- 5:02Speaker 2: big lineup out there, you know, when we have our
- 5:06Speaker 2: small lineup, it's hard right to go and play that zone.
- 5:09Speaker 2: You know, you really open yourself up to a lot
- 5:12Speaker 2: of different things. So I would like to do it more,
- 5:16Speaker 2: whether you know, especially with our starting lineup, the size,
- 5:20Speaker 2: you know, having having Sarah on a wing instead of
- 5:23Speaker 2: having her in the middle obviously changes a lot of things.
- 5:26Speaker 2: But there's a time and place for it, and I
- 5:29Speaker 2: want to do it more. And I think we are
- 5:32Speaker 2: going to do it more. We are going to work
- 5:34Speaker 2: on it more, you know, especially when we you know,
- 5:38Speaker 2: try to figure out how to keep people out of
- 5:39Speaker 2: found trouble, how to keep people from you know, attacking
- 5:42Speaker 2: us one on one. But the same things are going
- 5:44Speaker 2: to show themselves, you know, and in our in our defense.
- 5:48Speaker 2: You know, you've got to be able to keep people
- 5:50Speaker 2: in front of you, you know, and we've got to
- 5:53Speaker 2: do a better job of I guess teaching them how
- 5:55Speaker 2: to do that, but I mean I don't. I don't
- 5:59Speaker 2: know any other way. So whether it's man or zone,
- 6:02Speaker 2: you still have to be able to guard your man,
- 6:04Speaker 2: you know, and people think it's a zone, you guard
- 6:06Speaker 2: an area, You don't. You guard a man in your area.
- 6:09Speaker 2: So you still got to be able to you know,
- 6:12Speaker 2: force them where you want to force them, and stick
- 6:14Speaker 2: with the scattering import So changing things up is a
- 6:18Speaker 2: little is good, you know. I think we almost got
- 6:20Speaker 2: to turn over a couple of times, and I think
- 6:23Speaker 2: we changed some things for them, But we've got to
- 6:27Speaker 2: be bigger in order for that for that zone to
- 6:29Speaker 2: really work right.
