- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, nine till noon weekday.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Smart Simone.
- 0:04Speaker 1: Only on 710WOR. Let's take some calls. 800-321-0710 is the number.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Let's go to Dave in Chicago. Dave, how you doing?
- 0:18Speaker 3: Good morning, Mark. I'm doing very well, thank you. Mark,
- 0:20Speaker 3: I conducted extensive research during the show this morning from
- 0:24Speaker 3: my daily reports. Al Harris was the former prison guard
- 0:29Speaker 3: He turned comedian.
- 0:31Speaker 1: That's right.
- 0:31Speaker 3: Now, Mark, you're going to find this interesting. He used
- 0:34Speaker 3: to send you numerous gifts at the WR studios. He
- 0:39Speaker 3: was always out of breath. I'm reading this from the report.
- 0:42Speaker 3: And he was always begging you for more time to
- 0:45Speaker 3: tell one last joke.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Al Harris. We don't know what happened to him. He
- 0:51Speaker 1: just stopped calling all of a sudden. He did.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Mark, he stopped calling in. What does it say here?
- 0:57Speaker 3: He stopped calling in 2014.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Now, Dave is our most loyal listener. Dave keeps track
- 1:02Speaker 1: of every show, every minute, everything. He puts together these
- 1:05Speaker 1: diaries of the show. And he's the archivist of this show.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Very good, Dave. Excellent. Thanks for calling. Let's go to
- 1:17Speaker 1: Liz in White Plains. Liz, hang on. How do we see?
- 1:23Speaker 1: Liz in White Plains, are you there? Yeah.
- 1:26Speaker 4: Hi, Mark.
- 1:27Speaker 5: How are you?
- 1:27Speaker 1: Good. How are you doing?
- 1:28Speaker 2: Good.
- 1:30Speaker 5: I love Bruce Lightman and about, I live in very blue, liberal,
- 1:35Speaker 5: white plains, New York. It's a one-party town, has been
- 1:38Speaker 5: for years.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Well, I don't know. I know a lot of Republicans
- 1:41Speaker 1: in white plains. Rob Astorino served there. He was the
- 1:46Speaker 1: Republican county executive.
- 1:49Speaker 5: My husband ran for county legislator with Rob Astorino and
- 1:54Speaker 5: just barely missed it. He was a Republican.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:58Speaker 5: But a couple of weeks ago, I put up my
- 1:59Speaker 5: Bruce Blakeman sign. And then all of a sudden, they
- 2:03Speaker 5: started sprouting up all over my neighborhood. And this is
- 2:07Speaker 5: truly amazing. This never happens in White Plains. There was
- 2:10Speaker 5: one Kathy Hochul sign. And also regarding George Pataki, my
- 2:15Speaker 5: husband ran for mayor of White Plains years ago. And
- 2:18Speaker 5: Pataki came down to do a little press conference with him.
- 2:21Speaker 3: What an impressive.
- 2:23Speaker 1: What are we supposed to do with this information?
- 2:26Speaker 5: Talking about, we were bringing him up before.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 2:29Speaker 5: He's such an impressive guy.
- 2:31Speaker 1: He's a very nice man. He's doing great work now,
- 2:33Speaker 1: helping out Hungary and doing all kinds of charitable work.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Thanks for calling, Liz. Yeah, that's interesting. White Plains, that's
- 2:40Speaker 1: a good barometer. If it's all Bruce Blakeman signs, very
- 2:44Speaker 1: good barometer. You know, you drive around the suburbs, you know,
- 2:48Speaker 1: we don't have this in the city, but you drive
- 2:49Speaker 1: out in the suburbs, they got the lawn sign for
- 2:52Speaker 1: the Democrat. Then next to it's for the Republicans. Then
- 2:56Speaker 1: next to it, it's a sign for the independent. And
- 2:58Speaker 1: then next thing you know, there's 42 signs on the corner.
- 3:00Speaker 1: It's just a sea of lawn signs. So totally, they
- 3:04Speaker 1: all neutralize each other, basically. Let's go to Mara in Nevada. Mara,
- 3:08Speaker 1: how you doing?
- 3:09Speaker 4: Good, good, good. I'm going to give you an Al joke.
- 3:13Speaker 4: And now Al called. It was after Tim Cook took
- 3:17Speaker 4: over for Steve Jobs.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Yes.
- 3:19Speaker 4: And he came out as gay. Al called and said...
- 3:23Speaker 4: Would you call that an apple turnover?
- 3:26Speaker 1: Hey.
- 3:27Speaker 4: I do laugh when I think of that. Isn't it funny?
- 3:29Speaker 4: Whatever happened to Al?
- 3:31Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 3:32Speaker 4: And Joe from Long Island. Where are they? Why don't
- 3:34Speaker 4: they call him?
- 3:35Speaker 1: Who's Joe from Long Island? I don't remember him.
- 3:36Speaker 4: He used to call him meh, meh, meh, meh.
- 3:40Speaker 6: Oh.
- 3:40Speaker 1: He doesn't call meh.
- 3:41Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 3:42Speaker 1: All right. Well, that Al Harris, that's interesting.
- 3:44Speaker 4: Isn't that a funny joke?
- 3:45Speaker 2: It's okay. Apple turnover.
- 3:46Speaker 4: I love it.
- 3:47Speaker 1: It's okay. Well, listen. Let's put it this way. If
- 3:49Speaker 1: you're playing Madison Square Garden, don't close with that joke. Okay.
- 3:53Speaker 4: Okay. All right.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Thanks. Let's go to David in Hopit Kong. Hopit Kong.
- 4:02Speaker 6: Hopit Kong. Hey, I love your show. I've been listening
- 4:06Speaker 6: forever on WOR. Bernard Melcher, Rambling with Gambling.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Love it.
- 4:12Speaker 6: Love it. Love it. Now you're on three hours though, right?
- 4:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:16Speaker 6: When you used to have Joe Bartlett to like, you know,
- 4:21Speaker 6: run things over with him. You'd be like the bantering.
- 4:24Speaker 6: That was great.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:25Speaker 6: So I think you need like another, like an, first.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Of all, you thought Bernard Meltzer was great. So we're
- 4:30Speaker 1: not going to go by you.
- 4:32Speaker 6: Yeah, but me, I could do it. I would do
- 4:34Speaker 6: it for you for nothing. I could be your sidekick.
- 4:37Speaker 1: And just, well, that might be a good idea because
- 4:40Speaker 1: a lot, a lot of times we want to have
- 4:41Speaker 1: a guy who talks like this the whole time. Who's
- 4:43Speaker 1: yelling on the show. You gotta, you gotta talk softer.
- 4:46Speaker 6: No, I would talk a lot softer. We can meet
- 4:48Speaker 6: over lunch or something. I would love to have lunch
- 4:50Speaker 6: with you.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm busy that week, but any other time.
- 4:54Speaker 2: All right, well.
- 4:55Speaker 1: All right, thanks for slowing us up here. Anyway, well, listen,
- 4:59Speaker 1: Bernard Meltzer was, believe it or not, at one time,
- 5:02Speaker 1: the number one most listened to talk show on radio.
- 5:07Speaker 1: I think it was the early 80s. He was so successful.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Number one. He was on every night, and then they
- 5:18Speaker 1: put him on Saturday and Sunday. And is he gone?
- 5:24Speaker 1: He's dead, right? All right, now let's tell the truth.
- 5:26Speaker 1: This guy, he wasn't even a doctor. You know, every caller, hello, Dr. Meltzer? Yes,
- 5:31Speaker 1: my dear, what is it? He wasn't actually a doctor.
- 5:34Speaker 1: He got some college to give him a degree in
- 5:36Speaker 1: music or something, honorary degree. And he would give you
- 5:40Speaker 1: all this advice, and he was so nice at the
- 5:42Speaker 1: end of the call, he would say, You know what?
- 5:46Speaker 1: I'm going to send you two t-shirts. Oh, thank you, Dr.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Meltzer.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Hang on. We'll get your name and address. And then
- 5:52Speaker 1: whatever your problem was, a legal problem, he would sell
- 5:55Speaker 1: your name and address to the lawyers. If it was
- 5:57Speaker 1: a medical problem, he'd give it to some ambulance chasers.
- 6:02Speaker 1: So he was unbelievable. He was quite the disheveled guy
- 6:06Speaker 1: in real life, but he was big. Let's go to
- 6:12Speaker 1: Christine in, I can't see what it says. Christine, how
- 6:15Speaker 1: are you doing?
- 6:17Speaker 3: I'm good, thank you.
- 6:22Speaker 6: Am I on the radio?
- 6:23Speaker 1: You're on something, I can tell. No, yes, you're on
- 6:25Speaker 1: the radio.
- 6:26Speaker 6: Oh, my goodness.
- 6:30Speaker 5: I only have a question.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Go ahead.
- 6:32Speaker 4: Not relating.
- 6:33Speaker 3: It's about the contest.
- 6:35Speaker 1: All right, go ahead.
- 6:36Speaker 4: I don't want to be on the radio.
- 6:39Speaker 1: Oh, okay. Well, we'll take it off here. Let's go
- 6:41Speaker 1: to Vincent in Brooklyn. Vincent, how you doing?
- 6:44Speaker 2: Good morning, Mark. Mark, I'm okay. Speaking about Bernard Meltzer.
- 6:49Speaker 2: He was my mother's favorite radio host. This is 40
- 6:55Speaker 2: years ago.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Women went crazy for him.
- 6:57Speaker 2: She listened to him religiously. And heaven forbid if you
- 7:01Speaker 2: tried to interrupt her while she was listening to his show. Mark,
- 7:06Speaker 2: you speak about early voting. I would love to go
- 7:10Speaker 2: vote early. The problem is the nearest early voting polling
- 7:14Speaker 2: place in my neighborhood is is fairly far away, and
- 7:19Speaker 2: it's down in the ghetto. I might not make it
- 7:22Speaker 2: there unless I.
- 7:23Speaker 1: My money's on you.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Well, yeah.
- 7:25Speaker 1: I think you'll be okay in the ghetto.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Unless I'm packed in heat, I wouldn't make it. Michael
- 7:33Speaker 2: Goodwin was right on the money about Julie Menem putting
- 7:37Speaker 2: her finger to the wind because this past Friday, the
- 7:41Speaker 2: New York Post ran a whole story about how the
- 7:46Speaker 2: bill that Julie Manning and Sandy Nurse from Brooklyn, the representative,
- 7:54Speaker 2: Mondami signed his bill into law that you had to
- 7:58Speaker 2: offer your properties to the nonprofit first before you could
- 8:02Speaker 2: put it on the market. And Mondami signed it, but
- 8:05Speaker 2: she then realized that there were a lot of holes.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Yeah, she did flip-flop on that. Vincent, we've got to
- 8:11Speaker 1: go do the news, but good point. She is quite
- 8:13Speaker 1: the flip-flopper. Finger of the wind might be which way
- 8:16Speaker 1: the donors are blowing. Anyway, thanks for calling. When we
- 8:20Speaker 1: come back, we'll talk to Bruce Blakeman. We'll get the
- 8:22Speaker 1: latest on the race next on 710WOR.
