- 0:00Speaker 1: Lessigo Mokoena stared at the spiral mark glowing faintly on
- 0:03Speaker 1: her palm, the blue light pulsing in time with her heartbeat. Nomusa.
- 0:10Speaker 1: I need answers. What did I just become? Nomusa's voice
- 0:15Speaker 1: crackled through the helmet speaker, thin and distant. A key.
- 0:20Speaker 1: But not the kind that opens doors. The kind that
- 0:23Speaker 1: locks them from the inside. A pause. The ancestors are silent, Lessigo.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Whatever you touched, it's older than them, older than the
- 0:33Speaker 1: stone circle. I can feel it through you, like a
- 0:37Speaker 1: cold hand on my spine. Lysigo turned toward the lander,
- 0:42Speaker 1: four hundred meters away, its silver hull a dull glint
- 0:45Speaker 1: against the salmon sky. Her oxygen read fourteen percent. She
- 0:51Speaker 1: had minutes, not hours. But the rift behind her, the
- 0:56Speaker 1: vertical wound of black glass... had begun to hum, a
- 1:00Speaker 1: low frequency that vibrated through her boots and into her teeth.
- 1:04Speaker 1: The faceless ones were gone, crumbled to dust, but their
- 1:09Speaker 1: absence felt like a held breath. I'm coming back, she said,
- 1:15Speaker 1: though she wasn't sure she meant the lander or something
- 1:17Speaker 1: else entirely. Tell me how to close it. You can't
- 1:22Speaker 1: close it, Nomusa said. Not from your side. You have
- 1:26Speaker 1: to The signal dissolved into static, then silence. Lysigo tapped
- 1:31Speaker 1: her comm unit. Nothing. She was alone again, with a
- 1:36Speaker 1: mark on her hand and a door in the dust
- 1:38Speaker 1: that refused to die. She took three steps toward the
- 1:42Speaker 1: lander before the ground shuddered. The rift flared, not with
- 1:46Speaker 1: light but with a kind of gravity, a pull that
- 1:50Speaker 1: made her stomach drop like a sudden fall. The spiral
- 1:54Speaker 1: on her palm burned cold. She looked down and saw
- 1:57Speaker 1: the mark uncoiling, the blue lines stretching across her glove,
- 2:02Speaker 1: reaching toward the rift as if they were roots seeking water. No,
- 2:07Speaker 1: she whispered, but her feet were already sliding backward, dust
- 2:12Speaker 1: hissing beneath her boots. She dug in her heels, grabbed
- 2:15Speaker 1: at the air, but the pull was patient and absolute.
- 2:20Speaker 1: The rift swallowed her whole. Darkness. Darkness. Not the darkness
- 2:24Speaker 1: of a closed room or a moonless night, but the
- 2:27Speaker 1: darkness of deep space, absolute and indifferent. Lysigo couldn't tell
- 2:33Speaker 1: if her eyes were open or closed. She couldn't feel
- 2:36Speaker 1: her limbs, her suit, her breath. She was a thought
- 2:41Speaker 1: floating in nothing, and the nothing was aware of her.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Then light, blinding, white gold, searing through her like a blade.
- 2:51Speaker 1: She gasped. and the gasp was real, and her lungs
- 2:56Speaker 1: filled with air that tasted of rain and green things,
- 2:59Speaker 1: and something faintly sweet, like ripe fruit. She opened her eyes.
- 3:06Speaker 1: She was lying on her back on a surface that
- 3:08Speaker 1: felt like moss, soft and springy, and above her stretched
- 3:13Speaker 1: a sky the color of lapis lazuli, unclouded, warm. Two
- 3:18Speaker 1: moons hung in that sky, one pale silver, One faintly rose,
- 3:24Speaker 1: and between them a flock of creatures wheeled and called
- 3:27Speaker 1: in voices like wind chimes. Lysigo sat up slowly. Her
- 3:31Speaker 1: suit was gone. She wore a simple tunic of woven fiber,
- 3:36Speaker 1: the color of sand, and her feet were bare. The
- 3:40Speaker 1: spiral mark remained on her palm, but it had stopped glowing.
- 3:44Speaker 1: It looked like a tattoo now, old and faded. She
- 3:48Speaker 1: was in a clearing at the edge of a forest.
- 3:51Speaker 1: The trees were tall and slender, their bark smooth and silver,
- 3:57Speaker 1: their leaves a deep violet that shimmered when the breeze
- 4:00Speaker 1: moved them. Beyond the trees she could see towers, not
- 4:04Speaker 1: of metal or glass, but of something that looked like
- 4:08Speaker 1: carved bone, ivory white and curving, rising from the canopy
- 4:12Speaker 1: like the ribs of a great beast. They were beautiful.
- 4:17Speaker 1: They were impossible. Mars, she whispered. This is Mars. A
- 4:24Speaker 1: sound behind her. She turned. A figure stood at the
- 4:28Speaker 1: edge of the clearing, tall and slender, its skin the
- 4:32Speaker 1: color of polished obsidian, its eyes large and dark and luminous.
- 4:37Speaker 1: It wore robes of shifting light, and in its hands
- 4:40Speaker 1: it held a staff of twisted silver. It did not speak,
- 4:45Speaker 1: but Lysigo understood it anyway, the way she had understood
- 4:48Speaker 1: the Faceless Ones. Not in words, but in a pressure
- 4:51Speaker 1: against her mind. A meaning that arrived whole. You are
- 4:56Speaker 1: the first. We have waited. A long time. Lysigo rose
- 5:02Speaker 1: to her feet. Her heart hammered. But her voice was steady. Waited?
- 5:08Speaker 1: For what? The figure tilted its head. For the key.
- 5:12Speaker 1: The door you opened on the red plane. It was
- 5:15Speaker 1: not the first. It was the last. The others have
- 5:18Speaker 1: been closed for millennia. You are the one who will
- 5:22Speaker 1: open them all, or seal them forever. The choice is yours.
- 5:27Speaker 1: But you must make it before the mepi finds you.
- 5:31Speaker 1: They do not want the doors opened. They do not
- 5:34Speaker 1: want you here at all. Lesego looked at the spiral
- 5:38Speaker 1: on her palm, then at the impossible city rising from
- 5:41Speaker 1: the violet forest, then at the two moons and the
- 5:45Speaker 1: wheeling creatures and the air that smelled of rain. She
- 5:50Speaker 1: thought of earth, of Namusa and the stone circle, of
- 5:55Speaker 1: her grandmother's kitchen in Mahikeng. She thought of the lander,
- 6:00Speaker 1: 400 meters away, with its dwindling oxygen and its clean,
- 6:05Speaker 1: ordinary death. I didn't come here to die quietly, she said.
- 6:11Speaker 1: But I didn't come here to be a weapon either.
- 6:14Speaker 1: She met the figure's luminous eyes. Show me the doors.
- 6:19Speaker 1: I'll decide for myself.
