Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett.
- 0:06Speaker 2: All right, well, one of our colleagues here at the
- 0:09Speaker 2: radio station reminded me at one like of Alex Media,
- 0:12Speaker 2: the LARR is about to go on strike, and boy,
- 0:15Speaker 2: that would strand a lot of commuters. It would make headaches.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Maybe just a weekend strike, we don't know. But if
- 0:23Speaker 2: they can reach a deal, that would be great. I
- 0:25Speaker 2: believe it's the engineers and the layman of the of
- 0:29Speaker 2: the l R. If you will, and of course you
- 0:32Speaker 2: heard me I actually on my Dom Manley salute. Ryan Pagano.
- 0:37Speaker 2: You also fit this as well because you are a
- 0:39Speaker 2: LR commuter, so you're following this more than anybody right now.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Oh very much so.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Just thinking about the possibility of what could unfold if
- 0:47Speaker 3: the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and the MTA cannot come
- 0:50Speaker 3: to a deal by Saturday at twelve.
- 0:53Speaker 1: How we look it.
- 0:53Speaker 2: I mean, I've seen signs in the Jamaica station saying
- 0:56Speaker 2: could go on strike, could go on strike.
- 0:58Speaker 1: I'm sure you've.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Seen those signs also, Oh yeah.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Very much so. And it's still very much the would
- 1:03Speaker 1: a could have should a.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Game here because it's like we don't really hear much
- 1:08Speaker 3: progress as of now, as far as if a deal
- 1:10Speaker 3: will actually be reached by that point, And it wasn't
- 1:13Speaker 3: too long ago where we were saying not just the exact.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Same thing about.
- 1:17Speaker 3: A potential LA double R strike, but the same thing
- 1:20Speaker 3: with New Jersey Transit, And if you recall from last year,
- 1:23Speaker 3: they did go on strike for I believe it was
- 1:26Speaker 3: three days that service was impacted, including one business day,
- 1:30Speaker 3: and I vividly remember just how upset New Jersey Heights
- 1:34Speaker 3: were at that point.
- 1:36Speaker 1: And you know, as Long.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Islanders, we were very much in their shoes knowing that
- 1:41Speaker 3: something similar could happen, and especially since something like this
- 1:44Speaker 3: hasn't happened since I believe nineteen ninety four was the
- 1:47Speaker 3: last strike.
- 1:48Speaker 1: It almost happened in twenty fourteen. To my recollec. Now,
- 1:50Speaker 1: let me ask you, they did reach a deal.
- 1:52Speaker 2: They just injected four billion dollars from the state level
- 1:55Speaker 2: to the city level to help mom. Donnie's a monstrous
- 1:58Speaker 2: budget that I don't even want to get into because
- 2:00Speaker 2: it's frustrating. But anyway, shouldn't they divert that energy to
- 2:04Speaker 2: making sure a strike doesn't happen. I feel like they
- 2:06Speaker 2: should put that same energy to the commuters of the
- 2:08Speaker 2: state of New York and the City of New York.
- 2:10Speaker 3: I mean to say that this would be devastating to
- 2:12Speaker 3: the region would just be a massive understatement. And the
- 2:14Speaker 3: fact that President Trump got involved the last time in
- 2:19Speaker 3: the fall twenty twenty five to avert a strike and
- 2:22Speaker 3: push the doomsday clock if you will, back to May
- 2:25Speaker 3: twenty twenty six, the fact that he got involved it
- 2:28Speaker 3: shows that this is a much more serious issue, not
- 2:32Speaker 3: just on a long island lebble, but this is now
- 2:35Speaker 3: entirely do you.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Know what the gripes are.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Obviously, these guys, it is hazardous conditions sometimes on the rails.
- 2:41Speaker 1: We're just on electrical fire.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Today, which probably helps the case for making sure they
- 2:45Speaker 2: get more money, does it. That's just kind of weird
- 2:47Speaker 2: how that happened.
- 2:48Speaker 3: But certainly, and if anything, it's just giving the Brotherhood
- 2:51Speaker 3: more AMMO to use towards getting a five percent wage increase,
- 2:54Speaker 3: which of course the MTA they're countering at three percent.
- 2:57Speaker 3: And with the whole song in Day ants too about oh, well,
- 3:01Speaker 3: you know, the fares are going to go up exponentially
- 3:04Speaker 3: more if we had to pay the five percent or whatnot.
- 3:08Speaker 1: But really, the fact.
- 3:10Speaker 3: That an electrical fire doomed the commutes, I mean late
- 3:15Speaker 3: this morning into the early afternoon, and who knows how
- 3:18Speaker 3: this is going to be looking for the PM rush hour.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Right, Nobody knows what to expect at this point.
- 3:23Speaker 3: If they're going to be able to get service back
- 3:25Speaker 3: to its normal levels by the time that's, say, four
- 3:27Speaker 3: o'clock hits around.
- 3:29Speaker 1: We don't really know that part.
- 3:30Speaker 2: And I guess if they do go on, if they
- 3:32Speaker 2: do make a deal, that's a little more more than
- 3:34Speaker 2: they thought.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Oh what it.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Excuse to raise rates on us. But we'll see if
- 3:38Speaker 2: that ever happens.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Especially after they just already increased fares to begin the year.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Two.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Well, the other thing is what is commuters telling you,
- 3:47Speaker 2: because I mean I haven't heard much of them.
- 3:49Speaker 1: All I know is people reading Newsday and that's.
- 3:50Speaker 2: The front page right now. I saw that yesterday. But
- 3:53Speaker 2: our commuter's talking to you? Are you talking to conductors, collectors?
- 3:55Speaker 2: What's the vibe like?
- 3:57Speaker 3: Really just trying to get the pulse from everybody involved.
- 4:00Speaker 3: I mean even on my train in today. I took
- 4:04Speaker 3: the train in from Grand Central at to Grand Central,
- 4:06Speaker 3: but this was before the electrical fire that happened today, right,
- 4:10Speaker 3: as we passed by Woodside, our conductor made an announcement
- 4:15Speaker 3: basically just saying, you know, in case you aren't already aware,
- 4:19Speaker 3: the Long Island REVERROO might go on strike this Saturday,
- 4:22Speaker 3: so start preparing an advanced work from home if possible.
- 4:25Speaker 2: That's a new messaging I'm hearing is that they want
- 4:28Speaker 2: people to start working from home exactly.
- 4:29Speaker 3: And I have not heard this on any other commuter
- 4:32Speaker 3: train before today. This is the first time that an
- 4:36Speaker 3: actual on board announcement was made in addition to all
- 4:39Speaker 3: the posters other announcements in the station.
- 4:42Speaker 2: The NBA working on PR what what a shocker to me,
- 4:45Speaker 2: but you know, big shocker, I know. But we'll see
- 4:48Speaker 2: what happens anyway. Governor hokel and I hope the l
- 4:52Speaker 2: R come to their senses and do right by not
- 4:54Speaker 2: only our hardworking engineers and hardware. We're union strong here
- 4:58Speaker 2: at one Lego Balox Media.
- 4:59Speaker 3: As you know, I'll say, have a PAX perspective too.
- 5:02Speaker 3: PAX perspective is very much a union strong brand, if
- 5:04Speaker 3: I may so, we.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Hope that they get a deal done.
- 5:06Speaker 1: And again, if you can.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Divert energy into what's going on with the city budget,
- 5:13Speaker 2: then do what's right for the Long Islanders and the
- 5:15Speaker 2: city commuters that do use the l R. I also
- 5:17Speaker 2: find it, even though I come in from Jamaica, easier
- 5:21Speaker 2: because we know the subways are not always faster than
- 5:27Speaker 2: the LR. That's the bottom line. I always think the
- 5:28Speaker 2: LR because it's faster in the morning. So let's hope
- 5:31Speaker 2: they come to agreement. Thank you God, and we'll talk
- 5:33Speaker 2: to you soon and see see what what updates we got,
- 5:35Speaker 2: hopefully before tomorrow, right or by tomorrow I.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Mean ideally before the twelve oh one strike deadline on Saturday,
- 5:44Speaker 3: I mean, and again, for all we know, they could
- 5:46Speaker 3: reach a deal tomorrow, but that's still very much a
- 5:49Speaker 3: big if, in which case now Long Islanders will have
- 5:53Speaker 3: to prepare for a working from home, be taking the
- 5:57Speaker 3: shuttles that the MTA is offering to subway stations Queens
- 6:01Speaker 3: and Brooklyn, or perhaps also using nice bunches, which I
- 6:06Speaker 3: know has not gotten the best rud. You know, there
- 6:08Speaker 3: is a somewhat viable path over there. I mean, either way,
- 6:12Speaker 3: there's still gonna be options for people to get into
- 6:14Speaker 3: the city. It's just gonna take significantly longer, and you
- 6:18Speaker 3: can only hope at this point that they don't have.
- 6:20Speaker 2: And if people drive, I'm sure they're gonnading them for
- 6:22Speaker 2: the toll congestion pricing.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Oh, they're still very much gonna do that.
- 6:26Speaker 3: So if anything, it's gonna work out heavily in the
- 6:29Speaker 3: MTA's favor. I mean, they're just forcing people to pay
- 6:31Speaker 3: more at that boy just to drive in.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Well, look, I'm appreciate that they lowered the rates of
- 6:36Speaker 2: half air the whole day. That's pretty special. But last
- 6:39Speaker 2: time I came on here trying to tell people to
- 6:40Speaker 2: avert a strike like the Dorman, they actually came within
- 6:43Speaker 2: an agreement within an hour, So maybe.
- 6:45Speaker 1: That'll be the same here.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Always got to put the energy out there, right Ryan,
- 6:49Speaker 2: all right, One leg A Balax Media packs perspective covering
- 6:52Speaker 2: the lar possible strike. That's how doomsday isn't here yet,
- 6:56Speaker 2: and that's my message at one Lego Ballex Media
