- 0:27Hello, I'm miss from Terrizon. I'm talking to Chris from Heavy magazine for
- 0:32being the legend that he is, and we just released a new single called
- 0:36Matter. Thanks for joining us, mate and stop us. You almost maybe
- 0:39blush, you say, but you've always been great to me, so I
- 0:44mean, you know, you gotta be nice to some people. Yes,
- 0:48I'm glad I'm in that category. Thank you. So when you're joined us
- 0:55today to talk about your recently released single Marta, which came out a couple
- 0:59of weeks so that's the only reception being for it really good. I think
- 1:03it was a mixture of things coming like relaunching it with Damaged what guests let
- 1:10me relaunching the band with Damage, and that be setting the foundation of this
- 1:15year, like you know, first single released in a couple of years,
- 1:19and then coming from that and releasing Marta like on my birthday weekend, which
- 1:23was great a few weeks after that has really helped because you had like people
- 1:27that were excited to hear the new sound and like the more metalcal vibe,
- 1:32the more the new elements that are there, the new songwriting style, and
- 1:36then to give them something new quickly was really great, Like it felt awesome
- 1:41because we recorded these songs years ago, so it was like nice to have
- 1:46get them out of the world and people like him. You know, that's
- 1:48been really good. So it tells to me more about Marta from a musical
- 1:52point of view, what you were down for with it. Honestly, it
- 1:56was one. It was funny because Luke wrote he wrote two riffs for two
- 2:00separate songs. There was like an ambient one and there was like this really
- 2:02chunky one, and I was like, yo, these are very cool,
- 2:06and we started working with The idea was to make like two different songs.
- 2:09But then one day he was like, yo, I put them together and
- 2:13it sounds really good. And I was like, okay, let's have a
- 2:15look. And I had to listen to it. And I had written these
- 2:19lyrics and a melody for a different song, and I just started mucking about
- 2:22and singing on top of it just to you know, sometimes you just sing
- 2:24gibberous just to get an idea of the melody. But I was like,
- 2:27oh, I've got this other one. Let's just see for funzies and it
- 2:30ended up working, so we kept it. So essentially Marta wasn't conceptualized.
- 2:36We had no intentions of writing it. It was written from parts that were
- 2:39meant to be different songs, and it somehow just organically came together. And
- 2:44I almost didn't record it because I didn't think we hadn't worked on it hard
- 2:46enough, because I hadn't like picked it apart enough, you know what I
- 2:50mean. And it came around, it came along quickly, and so for
- 2:53me, it's like, if I haven't really like questioned my existence writing a
- 2:57song, then did I work hard and like enough on it? So it
- 3:00was like really nice too, Yeah, anyway to be able to produce a
- 3:02good song without all of that self doubt and all that jazz and and and
- 3:07you know, it was something that wasn't even meant to be here, and
- 3:09here it is, and it's been more successful than Damage, So very exciting.
- 3:13Yea Lyrically, the song focuses on trauma, So I can you go
- 3:16and do a bit more detail on that? How much I'm kidding? I
- 3:25mean, I'm like, it's no secret I have a history of complex PTSD,
- 3:30which typically comes from childhood trauma. And what happens there's a big like
- 3:35statistically, a lot of people with complex PTSD do tend to end up in
- 3:38abusive relationships. And that doesn't even have to be a romantic relationships. It's
- 3:43it can be like a toxic workplace, it can be toxic friends. So
- 3:46they have a high statistic of ending up in those relationships. So this,
- 3:50this song in particular, is based on my experience from as a victim of
- 3:57narcissistic personal personality sort of abuse. And it was written after therapy session where
- 4:03I had just the penny had just dropped that like, this is not okay.
- 4:08This me getting blamed for everything that is wrong in our relationship is not
- 4:13okay, and why should Why is it that I am the one that always
- 4:17gets to blame and the confusion that comes with it and the gasline that comes
- 4:20with it. So how did therapy session unpacked it all? Was in my
- 4:25car, cried my little heart out and came up with the concept of this.
- 4:30It was it was about the moment when you just realized like like,
- 4:31okay, this isn't okay and I need to leave. Yeah, you mentioned
- 4:38earlier on relaunching the band, so can you go in a bit more detail
- 4:42then you're not a bit of a hiatus on But what's not to go with
- 4:45the relaunching, Oh yeah, for sure. So obviously, like it was
- 4:47like a soft rebrand because like the name and the essence of it is the
- 4:51same. I wasn't a hiatus for a couple of years, mostly because we
- 4:55were like Luke and I were figuring out a songwriting style, and and also
- 5:00I needed a break for my own personal stuff, Like I was going through
- 5:02a pretty tough period in my life and I had to like something had to
- 5:05stop. And at that point, music has been the thing that it has
- 5:10never stopped for me unless I'm physically injured, but this time I was mentally
- 5:14injured. So I was like, Okay, I need to break from this.
- 5:16I need to break from everything and really need to like you know,
- 5:19grab fragments of myself and bring myself back together. So there was about a
- 5:24year's worth of work and like you know, trauma therapy and stuff like that,
- 5:27and then it was just looking at figuring out our sound and wrote a
- 5:30bunch of songs, Like we've written so many songs and the songs that are
- 5:33coming out are like hand picked out of those. And also didn't want any
- 5:39pressure on myself this time. It's like let's just you know, there's enough
- 5:42pressure from life. Right now, let's just ease into and see what comes
- 5:45out. Oh hopefully, Joe, it's out a lot better timer experience for
- 5:48you. It's been great, Like honestly, it's we have already written.
- 5:55We spent this year writing our next EP, so there was like almost an
- 5:58album's worth of songs that we then down to an EP. On top of
- 6:01this and re establishing our live rig, I wanted to make sure everything when
- 6:04we just kind of go back out live and go back out releasing music,
- 6:10it's good quality. So that's why we invested a lot in like a film,
- 6:12Clert's good, great pr agencies that they have been amazing, great like
- 6:16marketing strategies, and also read it an entire set in two different tunings,
- 6:21just because why not make things difficult for me? And you read it an
- 6:27entire live RG And that kind of paid off when we toured with Office Amiga
- 6:31and you could just see how much easy everything was to set up a site.
- 6:34A set was like very tight, probably the tightest it's ever been.
- 6:38And it's heavy and it's raw. So yeah, so you've kind of paid
- 6:41off, right, And you also mentioned a new sound like a bit more
- 6:44of a metal core sound. Tell us a bit more about that. Wait
- 6:47till you hear the EP, man, you'll be that. You'll be one
- 6:49of the first few ones I get to hear it before it's out, obviously
- 6:53because you know you're my friend. It is. We call it pedal chords
- 6:59like power. It's like pop metal core. It's got a lot of metal
- 7:02core tuning, the medical care riffage, think bad Omens, but add a
- 7:08little bit of tonight a life to it and a little bit of evanescence.
- 7:11So it's very much off that Vein the EP, it is very much very
- 7:14synth heavy, which is a bit of a like a new I guess,
- 7:18pivoting to a new direction. But it's awesome, Like I have heard at
- 7:23the song selections back, you know, throughout and it's like, oh my
- 7:27god. And it ended up becoming a concept EP, not that we had
- 7:29intended it. But that's the beauty of like not putting pressure on yourself and
- 7:32just like not worrying about that you have to keep releasing and just letting things
- 7:35be. And that's been like how it's going to come together, and it's
- 7:39so much better. I think I'm being rude by not pressing you about things
- 7:43about the concept because I want to chat with you again when the EP comes
- 7:46out, and I'm like, yeah, all the questions now, so I'll
- 7:47leave that one. Your end sounds good. You talk around roughly telve months
- 7:54off, like, but when you came back, like the music industry leaves
- 7:57so fast in the modern age, Like when you came back up even just
- 8:00twelve months, it was a difficult in this swing, I think, Or
- 8:03did you feel like you had to make your name again? Not so much.
- 8:11It wasn't a huge departure for me because I was working in the industry
- 8:15as a publicist and as like a marketing agent. I wasn't I just wasn't
- 8:18writing music anymore for like, oh for a year. I had put a
- 8:22stuff to that. But me working in the industry kind of kept me familiar
- 8:26with what's needed, how to be relevant and all that kind of stuff,
- 8:28So it wasn't such a huge thing. It was weird and nervous, like
- 8:35it was. I was a bit nervous when I was like. Strategy wise,
- 8:37I was fine because I knew, like I had been been working in
- 8:39the industry, but also had like people that I trust working on our campaigns
- 8:45with us but I think it was very nerve wracking when I had to like
- 8:48write the new bio and then write the new quote for the press release and
- 8:50all those kind of things, because I can write about other people, but
- 8:54when it comes to writing about myself, I'm like, do I fuck?
- 8:56Like? Am I terrible? And I think I'm gonna like you know what
- 9:00I mean. It's all those weird moods that come to your brain. So
- 9:03it was just like, I really hope it goes okay, and I hope
- 9:05people don't say that you think you're good but you're not. You're playing a
- 9:09show with a Sydney band called Fist Dawn in February, so tell us me
- 9:13about that, okay. So Fifth Dawn is a band that I recently came
- 9:16across earlier this year, and they are like melodic metal, but like a
- 9:22very unique brand of that. They're so cool, they're heavy, and so
- 9:26this particular tour is very much a diverse lineup, which I absolutely love and
- 9:31I really want to position us to be playing more of those shows. It's
- 9:35supported by or Attack, the new punk band from Sydney, and I don't
- 9:39know if you've seen Oratech before, but they're amazing. Yeah, I know,
- 9:48we still work together. It's so funny. Yeah, So performing with
- 9:52them and the Atomic Bow Project, also another Brisbane band. So that's on
- 9:58February third at the Stranded Bar, which I'm really excited to play. I've
- 10:01never played there before because it's a newbie. Very very cool is twenty twenty
- 10:07four holding store for tries and going back down Yeah, taking it as Oh,
- 10:11totally totally ill you totally. I wouldn't be the hyper vigilant me and
- 10:18the extreme like organized me because I've got massive fomo. If I wasn't planning,
- 10:22it leaves a couple of years ahead. So we've got we are starting
- 10:28to record a EP in May, so that well, that's coming. So
- 10:31after the Fab show, we're taking a couple of months off because our lovely
- 10:35guitarist Luke is having a little baby. So it's so exciting a little Tris
- 10:41and baby. Oh yeah, hell yeah, I mean I love I love
- 10:46being an auntie. It's one of my favorite things to do. So we're
- 10:50going to take a couple of months off so he can like sort of you
- 10:52know, settle into the new life and all that. And then we are
- 10:54We've hit the studio We've got some more shows booked in as well, and
- 10:58we were on more interstate shows. So that's what's happening. Next year,
- 11:03new EP will be recorded, we will be doing some music videos, so
- 11:05it will be a year of performing and not so much releasing, but preparing
- 11:09for like a huge twenty twenty five Headland. If you got any more singles
- 11:13to release from the or you're start starting from breath recording now, Oh no,
- 11:18these ones. These two were standalone singles, so everything for the EP
- 11:22will be brand new. Yeah, very cool, Yeah very good. All
- 11:26right for sure, Thanks very much for joining us. Is awesome catching up
- 11:28as usual? Oh thank you good, thanks for having me sor me three
