Latest / Kenny Wallace Media / Cardinals Take Series Opener in San Diego
Transcript
- 0:00I know they lost the series three one to the to the Doyers,
- 0:02but I actually I left that series surprisingly with a more
- 0:07positive outlook than when the series started.
- 0:10And remember I said 83 wins and I said they were going to lose
- 0:13the series three one and they did.
- 0:16However, I think they should have split that series.
- 0:18They also now have seven dudes on the injured list.
- 0:21So to go against the big bad Dodgers, you should have split
- 0:25with seven dudes out. I actually said, you know what,
- 0:29this team's decent, Which And then they go and they beat the
- 0:32Padres. All I'm saying is I think
- 0:34there's still a a big block of Cardinal Nation that thinks this
- 0:37team is going to suck. And I I don't think that's the
- 0:40case. I don't know if they're going to
- 0:42be elite, but I think they're going to be pretty good.
- 0:45That offense yesterday, dude, they got a lot of guys that can
- 0:48do damage. They have other guys who are on
- 0:51the injured list coming back. It's going to make that team
- 0:54even deeper. There's a lot of, there's a lot
- 0:57of dudes in that lineup get. Newt back Walker had a nice
- 1:02catch in the outfielder. Oh my God, it was awesome.
- 1:04That was a thing of beauty #9 on the top 10 for a Sports Center?
- 1:08I worry. About a big body like that,
- 1:10sprawling, laying out, laying out.
- 1:12Injuring other players on the team.
- 1:14Oh, that's another. I mean, like, he's a big dude.
- 1:16When you run that fast and you extend your arm and you fall,
- 1:19that's where you sub blocks your shoulder.
- 1:21Your shoulder pops out like that.
- 1:23Oh yeah, yeah. Catch an AC joint or something
- 1:25like that. Yeah, that's usually your AC
- 1:27joints right here. That's usually like falling into
- 1:29the wall and then it it bruises so bad you cannot you got dead
- 1:33arm. Your AC joint, man.
- 1:35You hit that thing, dude, it it's your whole side of your
- 1:37body's numb. You can't move.
- 1:39It hurts like hell. The Cardinals did everything
- 1:41right yesterday, though. They did, they entered the game.
- 1:44You know, I told you guys yesterday, I don't care what
- 1:46they do against the Phillies, Braves, Dodgers, cause those are
- 1:49the real teams in the National League.
- 1:51I think the Cardinals actually profile very similarly to the
- 1:54Padres. They have a lot of talent in
- 1:56their lineup. It's very aesthetic to look at
- 1:59and then the pitching is shot and so and you dodged Dylan's
- 2:03season this series, which is cool, But for the Kyle Gibson to
- 2:07go 7 innings, you set the tone. You scored up three runs.
- 2:11I think in the first inning you showed some power with Wilson
- 2:14Contreras. Brendan Donovan even got in on
- 2:16the extra home run later in the game.
- 2:18He had a couple hits. Yeah, I think maybe even three
- 2:22he. Was going for the.
- 2:22Cycle something like that, but with Kyle Gibson going seven
- 2:27strong, because we were talking about, Oh my gosh, we got
- 2:29bullpen issues on day four. We're day four into this thing.
- 2:33We already got bullpen issues. For him to set the tone, we're
- 2:36just got to get to Friday. Friday's the off day.
- 2:39You got 4, getting one, now three.
- 2:41But for him to go 7, everything's going to reset with
- 2:44the bullpen on Friday. When everybody gets the day off,
- 2:47the pitching's going to be fine. Kyle Gibson going seven strong
- 2:50to kind of give the bullpen a little bit of a break that that
- 2:53was really, really good. Seven strong.
- 2:55Couldn't believe it. Couldn't believe.
- 2:57Especially hot off of Lance Lynn dealing in Los Angeles.
- 3:02You know what maybe this offseason they said about your
- 3:04side, young players. They might have.
- 3:06Now hold on, though. Probably not to be fair.
- 3:09You know, I love Lance Lynn. It was 4 innings.
- 3:12Rain delay, though. Rain delay, lot of traffic, lot
- 3:16of traffic. He got out, yeah, worked out of
- 3:18jams. So I'm giving him all the all
- 3:20the credit and respect in the world.
- 3:22It was 4 innings. I I'm.
- 3:24Yeah. Yeah, I wasn't that.
- 3:25Great. So I.
- 3:27I was not that impressed. I I was just.
- 3:29I did a gym thing. You said dealing to me, dealing.
- 3:32You got to go at least six. I think I know well, you know
- 3:35what there was there was a. Weird.
- 3:36I intentionally did not say shove.
- 3:38There was a weird weather situation.
- 3:39He would have won at least five or six.
- 3:41I'm I'd be more concerned, not just because of the first turn
- 3:45through, but it'll be interesting to see what Miles
- 3:48Michaels does. Zach Thompson, every mistake was
- 3:51hit out of the ballpark the other day.
- 3:54He can be better than that. I don't know what his ceiling is
- 3:57as a starter right now. I don't know how many starts
- 3:59he's going to get. He may only get a couple more
- 4:01when Sonny Gray comes back. Who was the daddy Padres pitcher
- 4:05last night, and was he any good? First of all.
- 4:09I know he got lit up, but is he supposed?
- 4:10To be good. I just love the fact that he
- 4:13throws A knuckleball, but he throws it.
- 4:15What was it 27% of the time? Like, that's pretty amazing.
- 4:19He's a knuckleball pitcher, but he's not Tim Wakefield.
- 4:22He doesn't throw the knuckleball 8590% of the time.
- 4:26He throws A knuckleball. The graphic when I was watching
- 4:28in beginning, I believe 27% of the time he has a couple
- 4:31different variations of fastballs.
- 4:33You know, guys will throw a cutter and A2 seamer or whatever
- 4:35it is, but that's kind of interesting.
- 4:38Imagine if you're facing a pitcher and 25% of the time
- 4:42you're going to get a knuckleball.
- 4:43Now he was, he was throwing 92 with the fastball.
- 4:46I just think that's a very interesting profile for a guy
- 4:49you never you never really see a guy like.
- 4:51That I saw as a pitcher when you were a kid.
- 4:53Are you like I like this? Knuckleball thing.
- 4:55Everybody. Everybody cool.
- 4:57You know anybody that plays baseball as you're playing catch
- 4:59your buddy. You always you always try the
- 5:01knuckleball and just. Hold it like this and throw it
- 5:03like that and I mean. On every on every team, there's
- 5:06a dude who has their playing catch.
- 5:08You're like, damn, this dude's got a crazy knuckleball when he
- 5:11just plays around with it. So if you could have that in
- 5:13your arsenal and you could throw 93 miles an hour like you,
- 5:17you're different. Well, yeah.
- 5:19Can you think of anybody that does that?
- 5:21No. That's why it was so interesting
- 5:23to me. You either have guys who throw
- 5:25it once a season, right? Or you have guys who throw it
- 5:29basically every pitch. RA Dickey for my generation.
- 5:32RA Dickey, Yeah, he's probably going to throw it 90% of the
- 5:36time. Maybe you have one little
- 5:38breaking ball that you just show.
- 5:39Maybe you have a fastball just to trick people.
- 5:42But the Tim Wakefields of the world, the RA Dickeys of the
- 5:45world, those guys throw the knuckleball 90 whatever percent
- 5:49of the time. How good was Tim Wakefield?
- 5:51He was. I mean, he had a long career.
- 5:54He pitched and he pitched for 1517 years between.
- 5:56Pittsburgh and Boston, yeah. Let's look it up. 90s into.
- 6:00I remember playing him on a video game.
- 6:02Did he just pass? Yeah, And did his wife also
- 6:06pass? He's that.
- 6:08Part I don't know. He's not that.
- 6:10He's not that old, late in the 90s.
- 6:12He's like 50. I think he was battling
- 6:14something. Cancer of some sort.
- 6:16Silently. What was the story?
- 6:19Excuse me? The story, hey, sorry, I think
- 6:23the story was that Curt Schilling broke the story when
- 6:27he wasn't supposed to or something on a podcast, and then
- 6:29people came after him for that. But we had Tim Wakefield started
- 6:33his career 92, ended it in 11. He ended his career.
- 6:38God, he ended his career 44 years old. 2.
- 6:42Hundred wins on the butt. He made some money.
- 6:44Here's the story. Yeah, Tim Wakefield's widow.
- 6:47Stacy dies five months after the Boston Red Sox pitcher.
- 6:51How did she die? That's horrible.
- 6:54I don't know if I want to know. You know, let's see.
- 7:00Hmm, I'm looking. OK, get him in.
- 7:03By the way, how do you exchange sex on Kirkwood, 855-282-8255.
- 7:06Yeah, I know. Text lines blowing up.
- 7:08I'll get to all. Y'all.
- 7:09We're getting there. We're getting there 9:00 hour.
- 7:11We're breaking things down. Cardinals to talk about for a
- 7:13second. But one more thought, because I
- 7:16did see a couple people complaining.
- 7:17And you know, people are always going to complain on social
- 7:19media, even when things go well. Well, they bitching about.
- 7:21They were complaining that the Cardinals left 12 on base, and
- 7:24that is a very high number. Where's my response to you?
- 7:28If you get 14 hits, it's inevitable that the left on base
- 7:32total is going to be high. Not everybody can get knocked
- 7:34in. So if you're getting 14 hits,
- 7:36you got a ton of traffic on the base pads.
- 7:38The innings that end at some point is 12 a little bit high,
- 7:41yes, but that's still kind of just inevitable with the way
- 7:45that you were knocking the ball around.
- 7:46So I don't even think it was that big of a deal.
- 7:48I'm serious. I'm praising the Cardinals
- 7:50because that was a that was game one you that you set the tone in
- 7:55the early stages. I like to kind of
- 7:56compartmentalize and just view things series by series, because
- 7:59we can't do playoff talk after every single game on game five,
- 8:02no. We can't do that.
- 8:03Can't do it. Cool.
- 8:04So I'm not interested in that you set the tone for this
- 8:07series. You can only worry about the the
- 8:09uniform across from you right now.
- 8:11That's right. You know what, Your bullpen is
- 8:13in a better position for the next two days and there's and
- 8:16you have opening day here on Thursday.
- 8:18It's going to be a hell of a day.
- 8:19This show is going to be down at Billy's on Broadway.
- 8:22Billy. 'S on broad.
- 8:22I want all y'all there by the way, come down and party with
- 8:25this early. And then Friday got the off day.
- 8:27Everything resets with the pitching is going to be good.
- 8:29So I think this was a really important game for this week.
- 8:32They set the tone. Kyle Gibson was awesome.
- 8:35The base paths were busy with full Cardinals.
- 8:38I was really impressed. Now I'm not even kidding,
- 8:41though. I I was kind of kidding about
- 8:42Kyle Gibson and Lance Lynn being a bunch of Sai young guys.
- 8:45I'm I'm not kidding about everything else.
- 8:46The Cardinals, I think, really set the tone for this week.
- 8:49And by the way, just so we have the.
- 8:50So win the series, the. Facts.
- 8:52Yeah, go ahead. So and and Schilling got crap
- 8:54for this. But Schilling is friends with
- 8:57Wakefield. Basically at the end he heard he
- 9:00heard Wakefield was going to pass and he kind of said let's
- 9:04pray for him. But the family didn't want it
- 9:06out there because because he said that Wakefield had been
- 9:10diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer and that
- 9:13his wife has pancreatic cancer. So the family didn't want that
- 9:17out there. They wanted it private.
- 9:19And I know again, it all gets back to politics.
- 9:21People want to crush Curt Schilling.
- 9:23He was basically saying pray for my guy, but the the family did
- 9:27not want that information out there.
- 9:29And then she passed five months later.
- 9:31So she had just so everybody knows, she had pancreatic
- 9:35cancer. He had an aggressive form of
- 9:38brain cancer. Oh, God almighty.
- 9:40So that's according to people. That's devastating.
- 9:44I think that was exacerbated too, by the fact that I think it
- 9:47was Veritech's wife who went after him on Twitter.
- 9:51It was a. After Schilling, Yeah.
- 9:52OK, one of the former teammates, wife I think was Jason Veritech,
- 9:55went after him, which just made, yeah, just made it even worse.
- 9:59And I get that. But this all gets back to the
- 10:01women's basketball thing. Anything Curt Schilling does,
- 10:05he's also a political lightning rod.
- 10:07So if he does anything because he's a conservative, that side's
- 10:11going to back him. The other side's going to attack
- 10:13him. Yeah, I think in this particular
- 10:15story he was trying to be a friend and just say, hey, pray
- 10:18for Tim. He's not doing well and just the
- 10:21family didn't want the information out there about the
- 10:24cancers for both of them. Yeah, I get that Saint Louis
- 10:27meeting with the exception of Slayton.
- 10:29Sounds like. Listen to Cubs homers.
- 10:31This team is awful. We had four green seats for 12
- 10:34years. Canceled them after last year.
- 10:36Brett. I mean, all right.
- 10:38But are they awful? They were awful last year.
- 10:40Do you think they're going to be awful this year?
- 10:42Awful. And To Charlie's point, because
- 10:44he said this, I think on yesterday's show that they kind
- 10:48of mail, not kind of, they did mail it in the final two months
- 10:51of the season, so. On purpose.
- 10:52They should have, by the way. Yeah, that's what you're
- 10:54supposed to do. Play the young guys.
- 10:56Mason Wing got caught up. Play the young guys that.
- 10:59That's the time to experiment when you know you're already
- 11:01done. So go out there and experiment
- 11:03around. You didn't have to play all of
- 11:05your stars all the time. You didn't have to play regular
- 11:07lineups. They tinkered around a little
- 11:09bit. That's fine.
- 11:10And obviously they sold at the deadline, so that also hurt
- 11:13their roster. And so yeah, I I I don't think
- 11:16that they were necessarily, despite everything, that was
- 11:19terrible, were they 71 win bad or were they 77 win bad?
- 11:23Now it's it's bad is bad for sure.
- 11:27But it's about the difference between how do you get to good,
- 11:32how far away are you from being good?
- 11:34I don't think that they're a good team this year.
- 11:36What's good? 90 wins.
- 11:40To me I mean. Well, 90 is pretty damn good in
- 11:43in modern baseball. That's 80. 5 to 90 wins.
- 11:45OK, I think that's. I think.
- 11:47I think. That.
- 11:48I. Think there's a big?
- 11:49Difference. No, no, I know.
- 11:50I do think there's a big difference between 9085 and 95,
- 11:55right? And I know like like 95, usually
- 11:59that team is a World Series contender. 90, OK, you're pretty
- 12:02Dang good. Pretty Dang good.
- 12:03There's going to be a million teams that that fall between
- 12:0683848586. There's going to be a lot of
- 12:10teams like that in baseball, and I think it's it's fair to call
- 12:13them. Good, fine, fine.
- 12:15Fine. For me.
- 12:17Middle of the road. If I call you if I when I say
- 12:20that the Cardinals are trying to build back to be a good team, I
- 12:24mean to a point where you are not so far and away removed from
- 12:30the Dodgers affiliates and the Braves class which they
- 12:33currently are. Even if they do finish top two
- 12:36in the division which I think they that's where they'll
- 12:38probably land. Charlie, you you said that you
- 12:41think they'll land third, which is a nightmare scenario for us
- 12:43in this show because we want I, said I.
- 12:45Said third place. I said third place, I think,
- 12:46Charlie. I think I said second, I think
- 12:48he chose. Second, I said.
- 12:49The Cards, The Reds. The Cardinals.
- 12:52Gotcha. OK, realistically, this could
- 12:55happen. And I know the the Cardinals
- 12:57just lost three or four to the Dodgers.
- 12:59But would it shock you? Let's just say Dodgers or
- 13:02Braves? Would it shock you if one or
- 13:05both of those teams won 105 games?
- 13:09No. And the Cardinals won 85 S Think
- 13:12about that. That would be Those teams are
- 13:15elite Cardinals, OK? I'd say you're fine.
- 13:17Pretty good. Whatever you want to call it.
- 13:19Pretty good. Fine.
- 13:20OK, you're You're 85. You probably get in the playoffs
- 13:22at 85. But yet you're twenty wins,
- 13:25potentially behind the Braves and the Dodgers, which most
- 13:29people think are the class of the National League and probably
- 13:33all of baseball. For me to be impressed with the
- 13:35Cardinals this year, they have to win a playoff series.
- 13:38That's that's a very fair bar to have.
- 13:40Thank you and. You know what?
- 13:42That's that's what I think is the the the biggest loss over
- 13:46the last year is that we have a lot of people have changed their
- 13:50expectations. If you remember going into last
- 13:53year, the fans were tired of 86 to 88 to 91 wins, winning a bad
- 14:01Central, maybe getting a wild card and the first round playoff
- 14:05exits. Fans were asking for more than
- 14:08that. But then 2023 was so bad with 71
- 14:12wins, it almost reshuffled the deck to.
- 14:15I think a lot of people now want to get back to the 86 wins,
- 14:19which we had been complaining about that for the three
- 14:21previous seasons. Yeah, I think you you got to win
- 14:26a playoff series because if you just get there, no matter how
- 14:29you get there, if you get there because you're surprisingly,
- 14:31really good and then you crap out in the first round of the
- 14:34playoffs anyway, then that be eventually becomes disappointing
- 14:37as the expectations change throughout the season.
- 14:40If and the current situation, the current expectations is the
- 14:43NL Central is going to be terrible.
- 14:45If you win a terrible division and then you make the playoffs
- 14:48and lose in the first round of the playoffs anyway, then it's
- 14:51going to be, well, you only got in because you were in the NL
- 14:54Central. If you were in a good division
- 14:55with the competitive teams, you wouldn't have been there.
- 14:57So I think in both scenarios, I think it makes sense for the
- 15:01argument to be to in order to be impressed.
- 15:04No, I'm saying be impressed. You can do a lot of things to
- 15:08take a step in the right direction, but that's in part
- 15:11because of how bad last year was.
- 15:13So to be impressed you, you got to win something in the
- 15:17postseason. And that's where I still believe
- 15:20that that fans media who are criticizing the Cardinals for
- 15:25not getting top end starting pitching one other guy.
- 15:29That's where regardless of what happens in the regular season,
- 15:33if they match up, like just look at the Phillies.
- 15:36The Phillies are the perfect example for many reasons.
- 15:38Obviously the Phillies beat the Cardinals two years ago.
- 15:41Phillies made a nice run last year.
- 15:43But but also, why did they do that?
- 15:46Do they spend money? Yes.
- 15:47Do they have great position players?
- 15:48Yes. On paper, when you know in a
- 15:52three-game series you're facing Nolan Wheeler, it's just
- 15:56different. It's just different.
- 15:58And I'm sorry, Kyle Gibson was great last night.
- 16:01It's going to be different if the Cardinals line up in the
- 16:03playoffs. Sonny Gray and Kyle Gibson,
- 16:06Lance Lynn or or whatever the version is, Right.
- 16:09That's the thing people are saying, OK, we like the lineup.
- 16:13Bullpen could be great. It's just it's it's going to be
- 16:16hard to go on a run, in my opinion, with this starting
- 16:19rotation. That's why.
- 16:20It's just really nice to have two dudes that you just you just
- 16:24feel good about them, like you. I don't care how Nolan Wheeler
- 16:27do, and they have great success. You feel fantastic.
- 16:31You feel fantastic. When they're starting your first
- 16:34two games of a playoff series, you're like, dude, I'll go to
- 16:36war with them. Would you?
- 16:37If you're the Cardinals, you're like, I feel good about Sonny
- 16:40Grey, second guy, whether it's Miles Michaelis, Lance Lynn,
- 16:44Kyle Gibson. You're kind of like, we'll see
- 16:46what happens. And that's how we felt, by the
- 16:48way, two years ago. And that's exactly what took
- 16:51place. Remember, they had, they had
- 16:53Quintana going game one, they had Michaelis going game two.
- 16:57They didn't even get to their third starter.
- 16:59Yeah, so Jordan Montgomery was of zero playoff hues,
- 17:03essentially. Well, he came in in that game,
- 17:05but yes, you're right. Gotcha, gotcha, gotcha.
- 17:07I can remember if it was Montgomery or we know, but to
- 17:09everything that you're saying, that's why I think the argument
- 17:12about just getting the playoffs and see what happens, I think
- 17:15that argument is losing credibility, especially since a
- 17:18couple years ago they reformatted the playoffs.
- 17:21And so now obviously it's the the three-game series, but once
- 17:24you get to the five game series, even if you advance, they're
- 17:28playing games on back-to-back days.
- 17:29You're not just playing one game every other day.
- 17:32You're playing one game and then another and then a day off.
- 17:36So you're playing pretty much four out of five days or four
- 17:39out of six days. However you want to take that.
- 17:42So the argument that you could possibly get away with only
- 17:47having three starters in a playoff series is basically
- 17:50acts. And now you have to have 4
- 17:52starters in a playoff series, which a a lot of teams already
- 17:54did that. But there was an argument too if
- 17:58if we really need it, if we have three guys who we're comfortable
- 18:00with, we'll overextend them a little bit with their starts.
- 18:03But they can't do that anymore. And so having a situation where
- 18:10OK, Greg, Greg gets you one. We like Sonny Gray.
- 18:13When he gets here, we'll we'll like him.
- 18:15And if we're fast, we'll see if we like playoffs.
- 18:18We hope we like. Him, I mean, we hope we like
- 18:20him. Right.
- 18:21But even if you make a couple acquisitions at the deadline and
- 18:25let's let's say one of them hits, one of them doesn't kind
- 18:28of like Lester and Hap. I know that Hap was really good.
- 18:31Jon Lester wasn't that good. It was a four ERAI off the top
- 18:35of my head. I hope that's correct.
- 18:37But nowadays, that's not bad. Yeah, but Even so, I I still
- 18:43think that having a guaranteed playoff starter of either
- 18:47Michaelis or Lynn or Gibson, or possibly even worse, two of
- 18:50those three, that ain't a good situation.
- 18:54Yeah, no, I agree. And that's and that's why I
- 18:56think that you can't win a World Series even if you're hot at the
- 18:59right time, because I don't think, I don't think you're
- 19:02pitching is going to be good for it.
- 19:03You you can, but I think it's the outlier.
- 19:06We we talked about this yesterday with the 2011 World
- 19:08Series. You had an absolute stud ace and
- 19:11Chris Carpenter and Tony O Russo masterfully bullpen his way
- 19:17through that, through that month of October.
- 19:20Which could the Cardinals, could they do that is only the
- 19:23greatest bullpen manager. I don't think we've seen that
- 19:28yet. But in the in the postseason,
- 19:30you do have more off days. There's a lot more bullpen.
- 19:32And look, you saw bullpen games in the freaking World Series
- 19:35last year. Think about that, where
- 19:37literally the teams are going to say no, we're going to throw 9
- 19:39dudes. We're going to have everybody
- 19:40get an inning in the World Series.
- 19:42There's actually one thing that I think weirdly plays in the
- 19:44Cardinals favor. And again, I didn't want to do a
- 19:47bunch of playoff talk, but here we are.
- 19:49I I think that the fact that they are nowhere near the
- 19:52Dodgers and the Braves and the Phillies, that they they can't
- 19:56have a first round by this year. There's no way there's any sort
- 20:00of situation where the Cardinals win like 98 games and have a
- 20:03first round by. I think that's fair.
- 20:04I actually think. And we only have a sample size
- 20:07of two years to playoff of. So all the we don't have enough
- 20:09data yet. But it's kind of looking like
- 20:13it's trending in the direction that teams with first round buys
- 20:16who have to sit five days at the end of the season, that's not
- 20:19very good. And so if the Cardinals do win a
- 20:21playoff series and end up against a team who's been
- 20:24sitting for the better part of a week, that is actually very
- 20:27advantageous for the Cardinals. So that that is kind of a weird
- 20:30scenario. But sit.
- 20:33For five days, man, you lose that mojo.
- 20:35I know. I'm just and and then it gets to
- 20:37the point of what happens at the end of this season.
- 20:39What do you do with Goldie and how to be structured the roster
- 20:41and you can go 100 million directions with this, but good
- 20:44to see. Arnado hit last night.
- 20:46It is. It is an interesting exercise.
- 20:48Does this did? This swing look different.
- 20:49Because he had a horrible series in LA.
- 20:51Yeah, he. Did his finish look weird?
- 20:53The way he was finishing his swing kind of looked like this
- 20:56half finish. It just looked different than
- 20:58what he normally does. Yeah, people were talking about
- 21:01that, Charlie. The fans have to have to change
- 21:03their expectations because the organization clearly has to.
- 21:08Yeah. And just so everybody knows, I
- 21:10don't agree with what the organization is doing, but
- 21:12that's what they're doing. And that's where I feel like a
- 21:14lot of times media folks, we get the arrows from fans, which I
- 21:19understand it's all good for just speaking about the team
- 21:23realistically because we know what they're going to do and not
- 21:27going to do right. I mean, every year I would love
- 21:29to say, hey, they should sign everyone.
- 21:31I've been here 1617 years now you know how the Cardinals are
- 21:35going to do business. You could have bet your life
- 21:37savings that the Cardinals were going to sign Sonny Gray.
- 21:40I mean, you knew Sonny Gray was the perfect Cardinal.
- 21:44People do in the middle of the season.
- 21:45It was. It was the most Cardinal signing
- 21:47ever, 34 whatever age. So you get shorter deal.
- 21:51Pretty Dang good, but shorter deal.
- 21:53We always joke boring, boring dude and his family, man in his
- 21:57mid 30s. That's a.
- 21:58Cardinal a good player who has age risk.
- 22:01A good player who wants to live in Chesterfield.
- 22:04Yeah, Andrew Miller. Next to Tuna.
- 22:06There you go, he. Was a good player, but it was
- 22:08his second free agency, so you know he'd been around a while.
- 22:12Correct. And little bit of a bargain bin
- 22:15signing. I'm sorry, I'm not letting that
- 22:16go. For Andrew Miller.
- 22:18Yeah, he had all those good years and then his contract year
- 22:20he wasn't good anymore. And then bam.
- 22:22So did he have one good year with the Cardinals?
- 22:25Didn't we? Look this up.
- 22:26Yeah, we did this a little bit, he.
- 22:28Pitched his his ass off during that during that playoff run.
- 22:32I'm in non-stop in Cleveland in 2016, Yeah.
- 22:35Oh my gosh, he was a a rock star.
- 22:38That that was some of the best playoff baseball of my life was
- 22:41Andrew Miller. That's how you can you can
- 22:44bullpen your way to a World Series.
- 22:45They didn't win, but they almost did, and freaking Andrew Miller
- 22:49was a huge reason why. Remember, he wasn't their closer
- 22:51that year. Their closer was and I forgot
- 22:53his name, but they had a. Jody Allen.
- 22:56I think it was Cody Allen. Cody Allen was their closer, but
- 22:59they would bring Andrew Miller in 5th inning, 6th inning, 7th
- 23:02inning, 2 guys on, they need to strike out.
- 23:05Boom. He strikes out two dudes.
- 23:07He goes an inning and 2/3 and he gets you to your closer.
- 23:10Exactly. He he was awesome.
- 23:12That's another thing. Speaking of bullpens, that's why
- 23:14I was not inspired by what I saw in LA from this baseball team is
- 23:18because they lost in both the directions.
- 23:22The 1st 2. The starters didn't even give
- 23:24them a chance because they got lit up immediately.
- 23:26And then the bullpen tried their damnedest in game three to throw
- 23:30that game away guy. God bless Gallegos, who
- 23:33inherited the runner on second base to start the 10th inning.
- 23:36And I think he was the only reliever who didn't give up runs
- 23:38in that game. And then in the fourth game,
- 23:40your bullpen collapse there, too.
- 23:42So you had the starters getting buried in the first half.
- 23:45And I guess it depends on what your expectations are for the
- 23:47season for the bullpen, because I think everybody kind of has
- 23:50low expectations for the starters.
- 23:52So the first couple games kind of fit the bill, and that kind
- 23:55of gave every that kind of proved everybody's preconceived
- 23:57notions correct. But if you don't think Kylie of
- 24:00the bullpen, then your preconceived notions were also
- 24:03proved correct in Game Three and Game Four, even though you won
- 24:05Game 3. Yeah, and my thing on that is,
- 24:08you also got to remember we didn't know.
- 24:11The public didn't know until the 4th game that Steven Mats was on
- 24:14a pitch count. But you damn well know the
- 24:16Cardinals knew that. So Ollie has to go into that
- 24:20whole series knowing in the final series my pitcher's only
- 24:24going 80 pitches, he's only throwing 5 innings.
- 24:27So that's where in game two, which I brought up yesterday,
- 24:31that's where it may be. OK, I I hate to punt a game when
- 24:34it's 5 zip. But if you know your pitcher is
- 24:39going to throw 80 pitches on Sunday, and you also know you're
- 24:42already banged up, right with with Riley O'Brien, you really
- 24:46do have to manage that pen and be able to use a guy like
- 24:50Gallegos, hopefully only in games you can win, which they
- 24:54could have. If you don't throw Gallegos in
- 24:56game two, you can use him in two winnable games, which is game
- 25:00three. They did win, and then that's
- 25:01that's real. They probably win Game 4 if they
- 25:04have better matchups in the bullpen, yeah.
- 25:06The Blue Jays just did that last night, which upset me with
- 25:08Genesis Cabrera because they brought him in and the announcer
- 25:13said that they're expecting a suspension, that he's a, he's
- 25:17appealing a situation or whatever from Tampa Bay where
- 25:19they they got in a fight and he went after somebody pushed
- 25:22somebody, didn't he? Yeah.
- 25:23And so he gives up two home runs.
- 25:25They they were getting crushed. He gave up two home runs and
- 25:28they yanked him after like 17 pitches.
- 25:29And it's like, if you know he's gonna get suspended and the
- 25:31game's already out of hand, just let him wear them out.
- 25:34Just save everybody else and let him go.
- 25:36Just punt the game. So how?
- 25:38Didn't they do that? I don't know.
- 25:40Because, like, they just were tired of getting beat and we're
- 25:43just like, all right, on to the next guy.
- 25:44So what does he get? Three games.
- 25:47I don't know. I thought was has not been the
- 25:50the long arm of the law has not struck down yet.
- 25:52This is. Relievers, but they're
- 25:53expecting. Relievers, Suspensions are
- 25:55almost a good thing for them. It's rest.
- 25:57I know it's early in the season, yeah, but it's really hard to
- 25:59punish or leave her unless you gave him about five games.
- 26:03Although you're losing money, but Bernie analyzed the last 20
- 26:06years of the World Series and very few really good teams have
- 26:10won. When was the last time the
- 26:11Dodger, the Braves won Peckerwood?
- 26:14How about 2020 and 2021? So next half.
- 26:18Of the year, Bob Ramsey would say.
- 26:19And then the 2021 Braves. They redid their whole outfield
- 26:24of the trade deadline. That was Adam Yuval.
- 26:27It was Jorge Solaire. It was Jock Peterson.
- 26:30It was a it was the dude from the Eddie Rosario.
- 26:32Eddie Rosario. Because Acuna blew out his ACL
- 26:36that season, so he wasn't even on the roster.
- 26:39So pitching wise, would that have been still freed?
- 26:44Morton? Was Morton there?
- 26:46That's probably before Strider. Was Soroka healthy?
- 26:51I can't remember. I have a terrible memory now.
